jivasya tattva-jijnasa

 [SB 1.2.10]
"Translation: Life's desires should never be aimed at gratifying the senses. One should desire to live only because human life enables one to inquire about the Absolute Truth. This should be the goal of all works." (German)
Prabhupada: Te, what is that? Jivasya tattva-jijnasa, inquiring about the Absolute Truth, that is the only business of human being.
Professor Durckheim: Now may I put a question? Just I think there is one way to reconcile. This was given just now as a Christian view or of the other side, as far as the body is concerned, because I think there are three consciousness, conscience of body. The one looks only at health, the second one only of beauty, but the third one we are never talking about has to look to transparence of our body consciousness, to become transparent in a way that in our body and through our body we might look for the Absolute Truth.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Professor Durckheim: That this goes together. (German)
Prabhupada: Yes. So the thing is that if my life is based on false conception that "I am this body," so the bodily appreciation of beauty or any other thing, that is also false. That is also false. If I am not this body, then anything conceived in relation with this body, that is false. (German)
Vedavyasa: He says that usually we see the body in connection with beauty or health. But there is another possibility, to use the body as a transparent medium to conceive the Absolute Truth.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is explained here. Jivasya tattva-jijnasa. That means with this body you should not waste your time like the birds and beasts but utilize it for inquiring about the Absolute Truth. That is reality. (German)
Dr. P. J. Saher: Not only to the Absolute Truth, but to communicate together. Think of the smiling of a child, its first communication between man. It's not only the body as instrument for the eternal truth but under, among us.
Prabhupada: So that you have to learn, how with this body you can utilize your energy to understand the Absolute Truth and reestablish your relationship with the Absolute Truth. (German)
Vedavyasa: He says it's a waste of our energy if we try to do good for others, if we smile and be kind...
Prabhupada: But you cannot do good to others because you do not know what is good. (German)
Prabhupada: You are thinking of good in terms of your body, but body is false. Therefore the conception of goodness is also false. (German)
Dr. P. J. Saher: I cannot accept that the body is false.
Prabhupada: No, no. I withdraw that word false. But it is not you. It is false in this sense, that you are accepting this body yourself, but that you are not. (German) Just like...
Dr. P. J. Saher: But I live my identity with the body.
Prabhupada: With the body. But the body is false, false in this sense, that you are not this body. You are simply... Just like I am occupying this apartment, but I am not this apartment. I am different from this apartment. This is understanding. So if you take interest of the apartment and you forget yourself, that is false. (German) If I simply decorate this body, apartment, and I don't eat myself, then what is the... This is false attempt, that we are trying... This is called. In the Bhagavata it is said that apranasya hi dehasya mandanam loka-ranjanam. Now, this body, just you or I, everyone, we are nicely dressed. But if the life is gone from the body, if you dress the body, is that very good intelligence? You have understood? That I am dressing, so long my life is there, I am dressing very nicely this body, but when the body is dead, if you dress the body or somebody or your relative dresses nicely, it is very good intelligence? (German) [break]
Vedavyasa: ...example of this comparison with a room and the body is not very good because he says...
Prabhupada: But because he does not know that he is not this body.
Vedavyasa: Yes, but he says because if we go out of the room, the room remains as it is, but if we go out of the body, the body doesn't remain. So he says there must be an intimate connection between the soul and the body.
Prabhupada: No, remains means in the same way. Just like if I leave this room and it remains here, in a few years time it will be destroyed. Similarly, if you leave this body, in a few hours... It is a question of hours and years. (German) [break]
Vedavyasa: ...saying that this body is, the soul is eminent.
Prabhupada: The soul is different from the body.
Vedavyasa: Yes, but at the same time, he says there must be a very intimate connection of, actually a oneness of body and soul. That is what is now.
Prabhupada: No, no.
Dr. P. J. Saher: As long as we are alive.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is not oneness. Just like this room is important so long I am living. Otherwise it has no importance. (German) [break] ...soul is gone from the body, even the body is very dear, I throw it away. (German)
Vedavyasa: He doesn't want to separate.
Prabhupada: But you must separate. (laughter) As soon as your death comes, your body will be kicked out by your relatives.
Professor Durckheim: I think the difference is now just one, that Sir Fox (?) spoke about our lifetime, that during our lifetime there is an intimate unity between life and soul, as we experience it, and he now has no doubt that the soul is something different of the body, and when soul goes out, there is no life anymore.
Prof. Pater Porsch (Indian man): May I please add one thing. Perhaps it makes a difference if the person thinks "I am the spirit. I have a body." or he thinks, "I am a body, and I possess a soul." That is an important point.
Prabhupada: Yes, yes. That is his mistake, that he is body and he possesses soul. But not that. He is soul; he is covered by this body. Another example. Just like your coat. So long you use it, it is important. And if you don't use it, it has no importance. But if he takes coat is very important... Important, it is important, so long you use it. But if you don't use it -- it is torn -- you throw it away. You take another coat. (German)
Prof. Pater Porsch: Can we not also say that self and not self must separate, either in death involuntarily, or through destiny.
Prabhupada: Must separate, must separate.
Prof. Pater Porsch: Either through death or destiny.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is called death. You separate from this body; you accept another body. This period is called death. (German) So the body which you occupied previously, that is false now. Now the body which you have occupied now, that is important now. So you are giving stress on the body which I am changing after few years. That is the problem, misunderstanding.
Professor Durckheim: I think it would be important for us all to know what you would say to the question, "How to realize the last truth, and what do you mean by realize the eternal truth?"
Dr. P. J. Saher: (German) [break]
Vedavyasa: He said that in the Bible it is said that our aim should be to know the father.
Dr. P. J. Saher: Not only the aim but the life consists in this, to know the father, God, by this... (indistinct)
Professor Durckheim: That is exactly what you say, that real life, real eternal life, means nothing but to recognize the father in the son.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is real business. And we have created so many unnecessary, superfluous business. We have set aside the real business, to know the father. And that is the mistake of this civilization. (German) [break]
Hamsaduta: Professor Durckheim's question was: "Very simply, what is our way or what is our method to realize the highest truth, the absolute truth?" What is our process?
Prabhupada: The simplest method is to associate with the Father, or the Absolute Truth. By association. This association can be possible. God, His name, His form, His pastimes, His abode, His paraphernalia, everything is God, because absolute. First of all you should understand this Absolute Truth. Just like here in the relative world the name of a person is different from the person. But in the absolute world the name and the person the same. So we are teaching or preaching this, that you chant the holy name of God, you associate immediately with God. And if you associate immediately with God then gradually you become Godly. The example is, just like you put one iron rod in the fire it becomes warm, warmer, warmer and, at last, red-hot. When it is red-hot, it is no longer iron rod, it is fire. Similarly, if you simply associate with God then gradually you become Godly or or all the qualities of God. Then you understand God and your life becomes perfect. (German) [break]
Professor Durckheim: ...holy name of Krsna.
Prabhupada: Holy name of God.
Professor Durckheim: Of God.
Prabhupada: If you don't like to chant Krsna you chant in your own way. Chant the name of God. If you know the name of God chant it. If you do not know then take it from me. (laughter) We are recommending to chant the holy name of God. If you know, you chant that name and if you don't know then take it from me. (German) [break] ...explained by Caitanya Mahaprabhu that God has many thousands of names or God has no name. No name means He has, He has got so many thousands of millions of names that you cannot say, "This is only God's name." This is one sense. But how God names are understood? The God names are understood by His action. Just like we say Krsna. Krsna means all-attractive. God is all-attractive. God is attractive for the Hindus, for the Muslim, for the Christians, for everyone. Therefore, being all-attractive, there's a Sanskrit word of all-attraction, Krsna. This is the explanation of the attribute of God. Similarly, if you've got similar name which explains the attributes of God, that is also God's name. (German) I think Lord Jesus Christ said "God, hallowed be Thy name."
Satsvarupa: The Lord's Prayer: "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be They name."
Prabhupada: So He has name. You find out what is His name and chant it. And if you do not know, then take it from us. That is all. He has name. He has name. He's not without name. (German) [break]
Vedavyasa: He says from the Old Testament that Jesus said, "Hallowed be Thy name," so he didn't say a particular name because, he says, God has actually no name because if we...
Prabhupada: So how He can be no name? He says, "Hallowed be Thy name." He has name. Therefore he says like that.
Vedavyasa: But there's no name in the Bible...
Prabhupada: That doesn't mean... He might not have mentioned or you have not noted. But when he says, "Hallowed be Thy name," there must be the name. Therefore I said if you don't know the name, you take it from us. That is intelligence. Why should you say that there is no name. He says the "Hallowed be Thy name." There must be name but you do not know. (German) [break]
Vedavyasa: He thinks that it's purposely done not to say the name of God, to...
Prabhupada: Because there is name, you find out.
Vedavyasa: He said that when it says, "Hallowed be Thy name," it's meant in this way: that there's no mention of a particular name to be respected...
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes. So that we say that God has no particular name. But according to His action His name is there. Just like Krsna. Krsna is not the name. Krsna means all-attractiveness.
Professor Durckheim: Just as Buddha is not a name.
Prabhupada: Hm. Because He's man of knowledge, therefore He's called Buddha.
Dr. P. J. Saher: The one who has reached...
Prabhupada: Buddha. Buddha means one who has perfect knowledge.
Professor Durckheim: Buddha is not a name of somebody, yes.
Prabhupada: Just like you say, "Hallowed be Thy name." President. President. Now the president has a name but you do not know. But the president must have a name. (German)
Dr. P. J. Saher: Has the name a special esoteric meaning? And is the technique of chanting the name, has this a special hidden purpose that the unenlightened...
Prabhupada: No, not hidden but open because Absolute is not different from His name. Therefore when you chant the name of the Absolute that means you associate with the Absolute. And as soon as you associate with the Absolute you become purified.
Dr. P. J. Saher: Like iron in fire.
Prabhupada: Yes, that's right. (German) [break] ...Vedic injunction:
harer nama harer nama harer nama eva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha
 [Cc. Adi 17.21]
For your perfection you simply chant the name of the Lord harer nama, harer. Harer means of the Lord and nama means name. Thrice. Just like we give stress three times, "You do it. You do it. You do it." This is a good stress. Similarly, the sastra says harer nama harer nama harer nama, nama eva kevalam, simply chant the Lord's name. Kalau, in this age of Kali. Nasty eva, nasty eva, nasty eva gatir anyatha. There is no other alternative for self-realization, no other alternative for self-realization, therefore stress should be given for everyone to chant the holy name of the Lord. (German) Kali means the age of quarrel, the age of quarrel. This age is simply for fighting and quarrel. They're not interested to understand the Absolute Truth. But they're interested in fighting and quarreling. Therefore this age called Kali. Kali means fighting. (German)
Dr. P. J. Saher: Will you please be so kind as to further elucidate your technique of that one chants the name of God and will you please be so kind as to elucidate further in some particular way or what comes (German) what should be done in relation to that or how it is, how it is formulated in that, in that total, in that complete system of your reverent teachings?
Prabhupada: Yes. This is the bhakti-marga, means, the first thing is sravanam, hearing. Just like these books are being written to give chance people to hear. That is first business. If we don't hear about God we simply imagine something. No. We must hear about God. We are publishing eighty books like this, simply to hear about God. Then when you hear perfectly then you can describe to others. That is called kirtanam. Sravanam, kirtanam. And when the process goes on hearing and chanting or describing, kirtanam means describing. Just like our, this whole society is hearing from these books and they're going out to describe. This is called kirtana. Then by these two process, hearing and chanting, you remember, smaranam. That means remembering, you always associate with God.
Dr. P. J. Saher: So at all times, "Remember Me."
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam [SB 7.5.23]. Then worshiping the Deity, to offer flowers to the lotus feet of the Lord, to garland, to dress, pada-sevanam, arcanam vandanam, offer prayer, dasyam, serve. In this way, there are nine different processes.
Dr. P. J. Saher: We have a similar thing in the Christian (German).
Prabhupada: Yes. Christian method, the offering prayer. That is bhakti, that is bhakti. (German) [break] Kali-yuga means fight. Nobody is interested to understand the truth but they'll simply fight, "In my opinion, this." I say, "My opinion, this." You say, "His opinion." So many foolish opinions and fight within themselves. This is the age. No standard opinion. Everyone has got his own opinion. Therefore there must be fighting. Everyone says, "I think like this." So what is your value, your thinking like that? That is Kali-yuga. Because you have no standard knowledge. If a child says the father, "In my opinion, you should do like this." Is that opinion to be taken? If he does not know the thing, how he can give his opinion? But here, in this age, everyone is prepared with his own opinion. Therefore it is fight, quarrel. Just like the United Nation, all the big men go there to become united, but they're increasing flags. That's all. Fighting, it is a society of fighting only. The Pakistan, the Hindustan, the American, the Vietnam. It was meant for unity but it is rendered into fighting association. That's all. Everything. Because everyone is imperfect, anyone should give his perfect knowledge.
Dr. P. J. Saher: Do you mean the Kali-yuga exists all the time?
Prabhupada: No. This is the period when foolish men have developed so many. Instead of making solution the fighting increasing. Because they have no standard knowledge. Therefore this Brahma-sutra says that you should be eager to inquire about the Absolute Truth. Athato brahma jijnasa. Now the answer, next quote, is that Brahman, or the Absolute Truth is that from which, or from Whom, everything has come. Athato brahma jijnasa, janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. Now you find out where is the... Everyone is trying to find out what is the ultimate cause. That should be the aim. That if you follow these philosophical quotes then your fighting will stop. You'll be sober. This verse also athato jijnasa. Athato jijnasa means to inquire about the Absolute Truth. Sit down, because there should be a class of men, very intelligent class of men in the society who are discussing about the Absolute Truth and they will inform others, "This is Absolute Truth, my dear friends, my dear..." Should do it like this. That is one thing. But here everyone is absolute truth. That is fighting. (German) [break]
Vedavyasa: ...was the always the desire of mankind to find (indistinct) he says the kings should be wise and the wise men should be kings.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Vedavyasa: So he said that this was always the desire but...
Prabhupada: But thing is that this desire is there everywhere. But whose desire is standard? That should be understood. Everyone is desiring. But whose desire is to be followed? What is the actual, factual desire? That is to be understood. Unless you do not know what is the standard of desire, then this fighting will go on. You desire, I desire... (German) [break]
Vedavyasa: ...saying that knowledge is important also...
Prabhupada: No, no.
Knowledge, that is described. Knowledge is according to the quality of the person. If the man is a debauch, what is the value of his knowledge? We cannot take up the knowledge that's given by a debauch. The perfect human being is described. Samo damas titiksa, arjava. Find out.
Satsvarupa: Yes. (German)
Vedavyasa: She says that we cannot have heaven on earth.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Vedavyasa: We cannot have heaven on earth simply by our desiring it.
Prabhupada: No. Just like there are intelligent class of men, they sit together. They do not fight. Still you can men... because the example is there. But that requires qualification. Therefore what is that qualification?
Satsvarupa:
samo damas tapah saucam
ksantir arjavam eva ca
jnanam vijnanam astikyam
brahma-karma svabhava-jam
 [Bg. 18.42]
"Translation: Peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, calmness, honesty, wisdom, knowledge and religiousness. These are the qualities by which the brahmanas work."
Prabhupada: That is the qualities of the highest intelligent class of men. So if you do not find such qualities, how his knowledge should be perfect? These are the qualities. (German)
Vedavyasa: He doubts that everyone is convinced about that.
Prabhupada: Eh? Eh?
Vedavyasa: He's doubting if we should convince them of that.
Prabhupada: Well, who is not self-controlled, he'll not be convinced because he'll think that he's rebellious, "I can do anything what I like. I can eat whatever I like." Now how he will like this idea of self-control?
Professor Durckheim: But one question, you see. These virtues have been always asked for by Christian churches also, exactly the same. But then today we realize that the virtues are on one level with the vices. But there's something different. If you pass through the (indistinct) step you get somewhere, you see where we can understand, for instance, if Christ says "Let the dead bury their dead." A phrase like this appeals to a different level. So I think as long as you...
Prabhupada: No. It is not different level. The advice is given according to the time, person. So if people follow Lord Christ and, I mean to say, instruction that is also perfect. But they do not follow.
Professor Durckheim: They do not...
Prabhupada: They do not follow.
Professor Durckheim: Sure...
Prabhupada: That's it. Otherwise either you follow Bhagavad-gita or Bible as they are, then you become gradually perfect. The difficulty is they do not follow. And still they're claiming "I am Christian." "I am Hindu." "I am this." "I am that." Rubber stamp. No qualification but rubber stamp. This is the defect. (German) [break]
Vedavyasa: ...qualifications on the material platform.
Prabhupada: First of all acquire this material qualification. Then talk of spiritual. (German) Just like I think in the university if one wants to learn about law he must be graduate first of all.
Dr. P. J. Saher: In India. Yes.
Prabhupada: So you, first of all become graduate then talk of law books. Similarly, you first of all become a brahmana. Then you understand about Brahman, Absolute Truth. Without becoming brahmana how you can understand? (German) [break]
Satsvarupa: (reading from Bhagavad-gita) "...three modes of material nature and the work ascribed to them, the four divisions of human society were created by Me, and although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the nondoer, being unchangeable." (German) [break]
Professor Durckheim: Your message, I think, will be very much appreciated by the youth of today in the western part of the world who says to the adults, "You have educated us to go to maintain our position in the world, to do something useful for the community and to behave nicely. But you never, but you never asked us who we are and who we should become (indistinct)." This is the problem.
Prabhupada: That is the beginning of our talk, that you are spirit soul.
Professor Durckheim: I beg your pardon.
Prabhupada: You are spirit soul, not this body. That is the beginning of our talk. (German)
Vedavyasa: He said that your answer that we are not this body, that we are spirit soul, it is not our real answer to our actual problem.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Vedavyasa: He said that if you said that we are fleeing, fleeing from the actual problems which we have now...
Prabhupada: Actual program, the actual program is there. (German) [break]
Vedavyasa: :He's speaking of the gradual process of self-realization. First of all...
Prabhupada: Hm?
Vedavyasa: We are speaking of the gradual process of self-realization, first adopting these brahminical qualities and going further and further. So he asks if he's missing, if it's not possible to become illuminated at once by God's grace, to become converted without undergoing these...
Prabhupada: Chant Hare Krsna. That will do. Yes, you haven't got to undergo this or that. Simply chant and it will..., you'll become perfect. So easiest. But still they will not accept. That is the difficulty. When you give the easiest way they won't accept. Easiest way is we are recommending the chant the holy name of God. Do it. (German) Not that you chant the name of Krsna. You have got your name of God, you chant that. Begin that. (German) [break] Then how can I help you? There is (indistinct). You do not know. So our recommendation is, not my recommendation, from the Vedic literature, authoritative recommendation and the Bhagavad-gita, satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah [Bg. 9.14]. Everything is there. You begin. Therefore I said in this age so many things is impossible to be done. But you begin chanting the holy name of God. Where is the difficulty?
Dr. P. J. Saher: To know the name, because I...
Prabhupada: To know. Why you are doubtful? There is name. If you do not know take it from us. (chuckling) Why you deny that?
Dr. P. J. Saher: There's thousands and millions of...
Prabhupada: That's all right. Here is one name. Why don't you take it?
Dr. P. J. Saher: No. I say millions of names. I'm looking for the name and...
Prabhupada: :Yes. But if I've given you the name why don't you take it?
Dr. P. J. Saher: Because I'm not convinced that is the right name.
Prabhupada: That is your misfortune. (everyone laughs) That is your misfortune. Yes. (German) How can I help? (German) You do not know the name, if somebody is informing you, "Here is the name," he still will not take. That is your misfortune. What can be done? A misfortunate man cannot be helped. That's right. So here is the authority. Satatam kirtayanto mam.
Satsvarupa:
satatam kirtayanto mam
yatantas ca drdha-vratah
namasyantas ca mam bhaktya
nitya-yukta upasate
 [Bg. 9.14]
"Always chanting My glories, endeavoring with great determination, bowing down before Me, these great souls perpetually worship me with devotion." (German) [break]
Dr. P. J. Saher: ...and when I was in Africa I saw the people are looking for the name and chanting like you chant. But they have a complete different idea of thought. My question is how can I know what is the right thing? From where do you know this?
Prabhupada: But, as a human being you can study what you have seen in Africa and where you are seeing here. There's much difference.
Dr. P. J. Saher: I mean, my question only I saw singing the people...
Prabhupada: No, just like these boys and girls, they are coming from Jewish group or Christian group. They have not come from India. Now how they're chanting and enjoying you can see.
Dr. P. J. Saher: No, I mean the intention was the same. They're looking for (indistinct)
Prabhupada: (indistinct) ...you have to see the resultant study.
Dr. P. J. Saher: I was quite surprised.
Prabhupada: Yes. And ask them to induce to chant any other name. They'll not do that. Phalena pariciyate, you have to study by the result of the activity, not theoretical. (German)
Dr. P. J. Saher: Yes. That would be the criterion for me.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. P. J. Saher: Yes, that's the same what the Christian criterion when St. Paul speaks. They had the same...
Prabhupada: No. We say that you follow Christian principle, you become perfect. But the difficulty is nobody follows anything. He follows his own opinion. That's all. "In my opinion." What you are, your opinion? That is the difficulty. Yes you can take.
Vedavyasa: Srila Prabhupada, in the Bible there are a lot of statements regarding chanting, instructions that people should chant the holy name of God. Like in the Old Testament it says from the morning to evening you should chant the holy name of God.
Prabhupada;: Yes. That is the business in this age. Chant the holy name of God.
Professor Durckheim: Whatever you do, do in the name of Jesus Christ, the Bible...
Prabhupada: That's all right. You take this in the name of Jesus Christ.
Hamsaduta: Prabhupada, would you like to take your prasadam now?
Prabhupada: Not now. Later. The simplest method-chant the holy name of the Lord. That's all.
Prof. Pater Porsch: Should this chanting be loud? Or can it also be half loud, whisper or silently, mentally? Does it play any difference? Does it make any difference?
Prabhupada: If you chant loudly then others can hear. They also take benefit.
Vedavyasa: Should we translate?
Prabhupada: Hm?
Vedavyasa: Should we translate?
Prabhupada: Yes. (German) Even the birds and beasts they will hear and be benefited. (German) Therefore loud chanting is recommended. So that even the birds, beasts, trees, plants, they can hear. (German)
Prof. Pater Porsch: I seldom saw so many happy faces as today, this evening, below.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is the case. In America also the ladies and gentlemen ask them, "Are you Americans?" Because they do not see Americans with such nice face. One Christian priest -- I was going from Los Angeles to Hawaii -- so he came to talk with me. He inquired "Swamiji, how is that your disciples look so bright?" He inquired. Yes.
Prof. Pater Porsch: Without drugs.
Prabhupada: Yes. And one Christian priest he showed one pamphlet that these boys, they're our boys but before this they're not coming to the church. They do not want to ask anything about God. Now they're mad after God. How is it? He admitted, "They're our men." And I give you another example. In our Los Angeles temple -- this was a church, big church -- but it was not going on. It was being closed. And it was sold to us. And now you go and see there is daily thousands of... the same men, the same place. The crowd is so... Why? I have not brought all these men from India. Judge. Unless it is something sublime, how they're accepting it? And they're all young boys. Not that they have become old, therefore they're seeking after God. (everyone laughs) And young men have got so many aspirations, they go to the restaurant to smoke, to enjoy girlfriend, boyfriend, these... They have given up everything.
Professor Durckheim: And they are working in the society, they are working...
Prabhupada: We are working, we are writing these books and selling them. That's all. This is our work.
Professor Durckheim: I see.
Prabhupada: We have no other... Even in the Indian Parliament, the question was raised that "How is that this international society is spending lavishly? What is their income?" There is a rumor that Americans are sending these CIA, what is this? (everyone laughs) Rascal people, they think the CIA has come to dance and chant Hare Krsna. (everyone laughs) So, of course the reply was given that we have no information that these people are CIA but we know that they are maintaining themselves by selling their literature and public contribution. That's all. And we have got 102 centers like this. This is not very... If you go to our Los Angeles center, New York center and other, Vrndavana center and Navadvipa center, not less than 200 men are there always. And we are providing with their food, shelter. We give education to their children. We are getting them married. We don't allow these boys to live as friends. No. "You get yourself married." Yes. (German) Here is a girl, Kausalya. I picked her from Hawaii. Now you can ask what she was and what she is now. Now she's married. She's happy. She has everything here. Life is there. (pause) Hare Krsna. So I think you are all learned gentlemen, you should give us support and cooperate with this movement. It is very nice movement. That is my request to you. (German)
Satsvarupa: May we take your leave, Srila Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: No. You sit down. I do not... I can talk all night. (devotees laugh) Because it is Krsna's talk that is your (indistinct) already. Satatam kirtayanto mam [Bg. 9.14]. Why do you stop? Satatam. Go on. Continuous. What is that? Satatam means?
Satsvarupa: Always?
Prabhupada: Satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah, namasyantas ca mam... [Bg. 9.14].
Prof. Pater Porsch: In what way can he support, or cooperate with your movement? In what way can he offer optimal benefit to your movement?
Prabhupada: That is a simple thing. You chant Hare Krsna. That's all.
Prof. Pater Porsch: No. I mean in a further, in an extended way. For example...
Hamsaduta: Yes. We have got a life membership program which can be (indistinct) can participate in that way.
Prabhupada: You can become a life member and read all these books and chant Hare Krsna. There is no loss. Suppose you chant Hare Krsna there is no material loss on your part, but if there is any gain, why don't you take it?
Prof. Pater Porsch: No, my question was perhaps a little, not quite clear. Many of us here, myself felt, represent not only our personal selves but are here on behalf of certain institutions and we are active in some form or other of public service, these gentlemen probably also. And in what way, for example, would we serve your movement by giving a clear explanation about the aims of your activity, for example, removing prejudices and supporting Sanskrit studies and the better distribution of the Bhagavad-gita in this form, in such ways, perhaps?
Prabhupada: Yes. We are writing these books for distribution.
Prof. Pater Porsch: Yes. Yes. Yes, I've already suggested that one.
Prabhupada: Yes. And they are not manufactured knowledge. They are standard knowledge, Vedic knowledge, I am explaining for understanding of the people in general. Each word is being explained. Here is my dictaphone. I am sitting here. So as soon as I stop talking, I shall write immediately. At night also, I get up at two o'clock, one o'clock, and write these books.
Hamsaduta: Prabhupada came to United States in 1965, and this movement was started in 1966, '67, and since that time, he has published about twenty books like this, including Bhagavad-gita, Caitanya-caritamrta.
Prabhupada: And what is the number of books sold last year?
Satsvarupa: Four million.
Prabhupada: Four million copies.
Prof. Pater Porsch: May I please put a question before I forget. I heard from our, or I read in the invitation that this center is not only a center as such but something more. It should also be an asrama and also a forest university in the tradition of the ancient times.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Prof. Pater Porsch: A kind of a university also.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes. Yes.
Prof. Pater Porsch: Like Indian and allied sciences, Vedic sciences.
Prabhupada: My idea is that all our centers should be self-supported. We do not like that idea that for your support you have to go 100 miles to get your bread. That is a very dangerous drawback. You produce your food locally and then support yourself. The main problem is what to eat, where to sleep. So we get some place and support ourself by producing our own food. We have already begun in New Vrindaban, New..., West Virginia, Virginia, and similarly in other centers, we are producing our food, grains, vegetables, fruits and milk. That is sufficient. But we don't kill any animals. That we don't do.
Prof. Pater Porsch: But will this center also be a place of learning for Sanskrit studies and allied topics?
Prabhupada: Oh, yes. We are educating our children in Dallas. We have got very good institution, Sanskrit and English, and they are reading these books. That is sufficient. If they read these books, all different department of knowledge will be acquired. Kasmin tu bhagavo vijnate sarvam idam vijnatam bhavati. Yes. You can play a little record. Last night...
Hamsaduta: This morning's recording?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Prof. Pater Porsch: May I please ask, are there is also room for physical yoga exercises while chanting of the God's names?
Prabhupada: Yes, but we are exercising by dancing.
Prof. Pater Porsch: Yes, of course. (tape of Prabhupada singing is played)
Prabhupada: Make little louder. (tape plays for about five minutes of Prabhupada singing prayers to the six Gosvamis) What are these pictures?
Hamsaduta: These are pictures of our society's activities in the temples.
Prof. Pater Porsch: Very constructive and very... So much success in a relative very short time, if you began in 1966.
Prabhupada: '67.
Prof. Pater Porsch: And during the Bangladesh crisis you also...
Prabhupada: Yes, anyone came; we feed. That much... There were many refugees, so we fed them.
Prof. Pater Porsch: But that automatically answers the question of this gentlemen also, the body in the service of other people, you see...
Prabhupada: No, we give food. Anyone come and take food. Here also. There is no question of Bangladesh. Let anyone come and take food. In our Mayapura center we especially give food distribution on Saturday and Sunday. At least five thousand people come. So all humanitarian work is included.
Lady: Thank you very much.
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna. Thank you. (some guests leave) So now we have come to Germany. You cooperate and make it a great success for the general benefit of the whole humanity. We have got arts, music, literature, culture, food, everything.
Prof. Pater Porsch: I think it will also help to quite a considerable extent for the removing of prejudices and for a better understanding of...
Prabhupada: No, this is the only platform where all people, all religion, all culture, can unite. This is the only place, Krsna consciousness. We practically see how they are becoming successful. In Africa also, within the villages they are responding. [break] ...distinction.
Devotee: (showing Srila Prabhupada's books) This is Spanish, Chinese.
Prof. Pater Porsch: (indistinct) Chinese.
Prabhupada: Japanese also. And Hindi.
Devotee: Italian, French. Hindi also we have. Bengali, Gujarati.
Prof. Pater Porsch: But I also noticed on the faces of the devotees downstairs that many or several faces were, we would say in the West, sublimated, that the facial features showed that a certain form of sublimation had taken place. (German)
Prabhupada: Even children are learning how to dance, how to offer obeisances, how to chant, how to clap. They are also learning, small children.
Prof. Pater Porsch: And I think that it comes at the right time so that people may not be misled into juvenile delinquency, all of those "easy riders" and motorcycles and adolescent criminality. They find creative outlets for their energies also as a by-product.
Prabhupada: No. We are teaching... Of course, we do not defy this modern advance of material civil... We don't say that. But this is our main business, that is, jivasya tattva-jijnasa, to inquire about the Absolute Truth.
Prof. Pater Porsch: So can you not say that this knowledge is an atma-vidya, that we are trying to come to the knowledge of the atman.
Prabhupada: Atmine?
Prof. Pater Porsch: Atma, self.
Prabhupada: Oh, atma, yes. Tattva-jijnasa means atma-jijnasa.
Prof. Pater Porsch: That is why it is also correct to translate the term krsna-arjuna-samvara (?) as a kind of metaphysical knowledge, philosophical knowledge.
Prabhupada: (aside:) No, not now. No, not now. No, whole knowledge. Metaphysical, physical, everything is there.
Prof. Pater Porsch: In the Gita it also, a verse, that "Four kinds of persons seek Me..."
Prabhupada: Ah, yes. Catur-vidha bhajante mam.
Prof. Pater Porsch: "The man who seeks knowledge."
Prabhupada: Yes, yes, catur-vidha. And similarly, there are four kinds of rascals. Catur-vidha. No. Na mam duskrtino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah [Bg. 7.15]. Everything is there.
Prof. Pater Porsch: But, perhaps, that could be also a question, that Graf Durckheim has in mind, I think, perhaps, when he asked the question about belief, etc. Perhaps he also thinks that we are living in a period of, where, because of the technological construction of society, rational knowledge is appreciated and, for example, ten years ago non-rational knowledge in Germany, actually, or in Europe was highly suspected. We had lived through a period of positivism, and people in our universities even wanted to abolish the word consciousness. They even wanted to abolish the word psychology on the basis, on the presumption that there is no such thing as a (German).
Professor Durckheim: But this time is over.
Prof. Pater Porsch: Yes.
Professor Durckheim: The modern times are not modern anymore.
Professor Durckheim: I agree with you but just think how the world was only a few years ago.
Professor Durckheim: Yes. And especially if you talk about the rational (German), the really German tradition is the irrational. So now this is coming back now, rediscovering their own past slowly.
Prabhupada: So long they do not come to the standard platform, they will accept this sometimes and that sometimes. This will go on, changing.
Prof. Pater Porsch: No, but I meant it differently. Can it not be that average man in the street... I don't mean... Yes, it was, of course, in Germany. Man in the street now is infected from the...
Professor Durckheim: Absolutely, yes.
Prof. Pater Porsch: And he thinks that in order to give a rational presentment, (German) [break]
Professor Durckheim: ...I realize that the closer members engaged, really, in this work of distributing books and chanting, wearing the white robes and shaving the heads, they are the closer participants I suppose. And then have you also members of your movement which are simply in their work, in the community, in the world? Or is...
Prabhupada: No, we invite everyone.
Professor Durckheim: You invite. But as far as members are concerned, to become a member of your movement...
Hamsaduta: Yes, we have people in all walks of life. For example, we have the (German). He is a life member. And all people...
Professor Durckheim: He's simply a member?
Hamsaduta: Yes. He is a member, he supports the movement, he follows the principles himself, he appreciates the philosophy, but he has his responsibility in the society. He acts as a member of the society and he is a member. But his lifestyle is Krsna consciousness. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: Huh? Beg, borrow, steal. Bring money and enjoy. They were selected Marwaris. This morning?Mahamsa: Yes, these people are the head of the Marwari community. They don't know how to live. They live in these slums which we saw today. They live all around that area. They are crore-patis. They have crores of rupees.
Prabhupada: To live very gorgeously is not good.
Mahamsa: But even their houses are not so clean, shabby.
Prabhupada: Even though they're not... You cannot say not... They are clean. I have seen in Bombay even the poorest man, his house, and a Parsee gentleman, his house. Kitchen habits. A Parsee's kitchen is so nasty. And here you see this poor man's house, they are neat. Their utensils how much cleansed. I had been in Parsee kitchen. All the pots black. Nothing is cleansed. For eating they use this China. So clean or unclean cannot be understood. Simply washed. But so far the kitchen pots, all are... In our also, when it is handled by this European, American devotees, the black. Down, it is black. That should not be black. It must be cleansed.
Mahamsa: By the heat with these wood, it brings up a lot of soot.
Prabhupada: But it must be cleansed daily.
Mahamsa: It should not come on your finger if you touch it. That black thing.
Prabhupada: Not even you cannot see black, any black spots. Then it is clean. Otherwise not clean. If there's a single black spot, it is not clean. You can see from this poor class of men, how their utensils are cleansed. Before taking water the jug, the waterpot... You'll like to drink water. In our school days there were sweeper, they were a different quarter. So you like to sit down. So clean. The sweeper, cleansing the toilet, bangi. But when you come to his house, living quarter, oh, it is so clean. The bed, the room, the utensils. And they also will take twice, thrice bath, then they will eat. That is a Hindu culture. Even the sweeper class, lowest class. And I have seen one sweeper class who were in Allahabad, regularly worshiping Deity. Very nice worship.
Mahamsa: So a Vaisnava then...
Prabhupada: They took initiation from the Vrndavana Goswami and they follow strictly rules and regulations. Cleanliness is very essential. In English also it is said cleanliness is next to Godliness. Everything should be, especially temple. It will attract them. And we are singing daily, sri-vigraharadhana-nitya-nana-srngara-tan-mandira-marjanadau **. Tat-mandira-marjana. Marjana means cleanliness. And want of cleanliness means laziness. If you are lazy you cannot keep clean. "Ah, let me sleep for the time being." That is mode of ignorance. Tamo-guna. So we have to conquer over rajo-guna, tamo-guna. Tada rajas-tamo-bhavah [SB 1.2.19]. Then there is question of coming to the platform, suddha, sattvika. Sattvam visuddham vasudeva-sabditam. Where is this verse? In Caitanya-caritamrta.
Pradyumna: Sattvam visuddham vasudeva-sabditam.
Prabhupada: Maybe Fourth Chapter, Caitanya-caritamrta.
Pradyumna: Caitanya-caritamrta was quoted? Adi-lila?
Prabhupada: Mm.
Mahamsa: Shall I go and bring the agreement?
Prabhupada: Yes. The Western world is very busy manufacturing this machine. And they are thinking this is advancement of civilization.
Hari-sauri: Technology.
Prabhupada: That is not advancement.
Hari-sauri: They can't see any use for philosophy and fine arts any more.
Prabhupada: Because they do not know what is soul. They do not know what is missing. Why the body is useless. They do not cultivate... The most important thing they do not cultivate. This man was so important one second before. Now the whole body is useless. It has to be thrown away. They do not give attention even to this. How he becomes... Second before he was Mr. Churchill or Mr. such and such, very important man. All men showing respect. And now he is useless. If somebody kicks on his face nobody will say. Out of sentiment they protest, but the man will not protest.
Hari-sauri: They stick him in the ground. Put him in a box.
Prabhupada: But why this happened, this why question does not come. They are so dull. For that thing missing. And these rascal scientists will theorize, the blood becomes white, this becomes that, that becomes that. And do it. If the blood has become white then make it red. Mix some color or chemical and bring him to life. "No, the life-giving substance is lost." Oh, life-giving substance is not lost. So many germs are coming. Why do you say the life-giving substance is lost? It is there. They do not consider all these things. If matter is life-giving substance, matter is there. Decomposed matter is also matter. Just like stool, a decomposed remnants of foodstuff. That is also matter. Stool is also matter. The same (indistinct) is there. The earth is there, the water is there, the heat is there. What is the loss there? And actually you see from this matter, from the stool so many worms are coming out. How do you say that the life-giving matter is missing? That you cannot explain. Still they will not accept that the soul is gone. That individual soul is gone. This is their intelligence. Give me that stamp. So before... (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: ...take the credit. And what is your credit? It is already there for millions of years. Why you are anxious to produce this? Without your help it is being produced. So why you spending our hard-earned money and cheating us? You are cheater. You should be punished. These things are already going on. For you there is no scarcity of life. Then why you are spending our tax to show your talent? What is your talent? You are simply cheating us -- "We shall do it..." You do or do not, the things are already there. Why you are taking our money to make research? You are cheating us. You should be punished. You will be punished. Even the state does not punish, you'll be punished by the Supreme Lord because you are cheating. So you can cheat us, but you cannot cheat God. Regular punishment will be there. Millions of years it has been going on, and I want to tell (?) you, just tell (?) you (indistinct). The same example-millions of dogs are barking, and this man has learned how to bark. He is selling tickets. You see? You are driving away barking dog, and because this rascal has learned how to bark, you have to pay for it. What do you say?Yasodanandana: So they would say, "Well, we do not claim any credit, but, similarly, you cannot give God credit, because it is going on as a biochemical reaction."
Prabhupada: Why not? That is your rascaldom. You cannot produce it. Why do you say like that? You rascal, you produce by biochemical combination. That is your rascaldom. That is not science. You are talking like a child. That's all. Credit must be given to God. He's already doing it very systematically. Why shall I... I am not such a fool that I have to give credit to you.
Yasodanandana: No, that is not the question, to give credit to me. But just because you can't...
Prabhupada: Anyone who is producing, either or God or somebody, or somebody is doing that. I must see, (indistinct) ...not to you. You may not accept God, but somebody is doing that. As you are trying to do it, similarly, somebody else is already there. Therefore he should get the credit. Why you are claiming to get the credit? That is not right. Anybody... Just like you are somebody, you are trying to take all the credit. So similarly, somebody is already doing. So he should get the credit.
Yasodanandana: Their objection is to "he."
Prabhupada: But why you are "he"?
Yasodanandana: Oh, I'm simply attempting.
Prabhupada: Attempting... You are "he"? You are person. You are attempting. You are foolish, you are attempting. But there is another person who has already done it. As you are a person, you are trying to do it, it is being already done by another person.
Yasodanandana: Maybe because I am person...
Prabhupada: That is not maybe. Maybe... As soon as you say "maybe" then you'll be slapped. No knowledge. It is not a question of "maybe." It must be factual. Is that all right?
Yasodanandana: Yes.
Prabhupada: Attack these rascals strongly in big, big meetings, and slap them, "Why you are cheating and spending our hard-earned money, taxes?" Better follow us. We are giving all credit to the person who has already..., going on with the big man. Very systematically it is going on. For ourself, we are human being. When there are long hairs, we cut. That person's (indistinct) is so nice... nobody's going to cut the (indistinct) ...of the street. But annually, they are already being changed. The whole (indistinct), thrown away. Who's doing that? You must get credit. It is very nice here in the springtime.
Brahmananda: They have never seen God. They can see chemicals, but they cannot...
Prabhupada: You are trying. How you can see? You rascal, you are blind. You, how can you see? You have to treat your eyes, then you will see. We are seeing. We are not blind like you. You are blind. You require treatment. You come to the treatment. You cannot see.
Yasodanandana: They don't have faith in the doctor.
Prabhupada: Ha?
Yasodanandana: They don't have faith in the doctor.
Prabhupada: Then how he claims to..., claims others' faith upon him? He's more than a doctor? Doctor is also as good as scientist as you are. If you do not have faith in the doctor why do you claim people should have faith in you? Where is the proof that you'll be able? Why you are asking us blindly to follow you? What is your answer?
Nitai: Sometimes they say that if we can control, if we can produce...
Prabhupada: But I'm protesting that you cannot control. You are rascal. You are thinking like that. That is our charge against you, that you cannot control. In the history there is not a single instance that man has controlled nature. But nature has controlled man. That is the history. Where is the proof that you shall control? You are controlled. Nature is forcing you to become an old man. You are becoming. You control like that, that you remain a young man. Nature is controlling you to die. You control nature that death will not be forced upon me. So where is the history that man has controlled nature?
Nitai: They say that now we are controlling atomic energy and now we are controlling...
Prabhupada: What is that atomic energy? What is the use of it? We'll die. Without atomic energy you'll die. What is that control? Death is already there, and you're utilizing atomic energy for death, that's all. So what is your credit? You use atomic energy that you'll not die. Then it is control. Death is already there. You might have atomic energy or no atomic energy -- you have to die. By atomic energy you are accelerating the same problem of death, that's all.
Tamala Krsna: Gradually we are learning how to become deathless.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yasodanandana: They will argue...
Prabhupada: That is foolishness. That is called hope against hope. That is foolishness. Therefore we say because you are expecting like that, therefore we understand that you are a fool. We can immediately understand, "Here is a grand fool." That is our study. Many fools have done like that, and you are one of them, you are also scientific (indistinct). Therefore our conclusion is "You are Fool No. 1."
Devotee: We may not be able to actually stop death, but while we're here we can at least prolong our lifetime and...
Prabhupada: That also you cannot do. Where is the proof?
Devotee: Well, at the atomic research plants...
Prabhupada: Oh, that is another foolishness, I say. You have not done it. You are simply expecting. Hope against hope. That's all.
Devotee: But they are making different cures for critical diseases that are causing deaths...
Prabhupada: That's all right. But that does not mean there will be no disease. That is already being done by many medical practitioners. Better medicine. But where is the medicine that will not be disease.
Tamala Krsna: Gradually we are eliminating one by one all the diseases.
Prabhupada: No, that you have not done. No disease... You have increased diseases. You have stopped one disease and increased another. Not stopped! But you have increased another disease.
Devotee: We have to learn though how to prevent all these diseases.
Prabhupada: Therefore you are fool. You have to learn. That means you have to learn, means you are fool.
Yasodanandana: But we are learning.
Prabhupada: Don't assert it, that you have done it already, you shall do it... As soon as you say we have to learn, that means you are fools. And while you are student, why you are claiming all these perfections? You have to learn. That you have to learn from us.
Brahmananda: Actually, when I was in Germany, there was evidence of how the scientists increased disease. They invented some vaccine to counteract influenza, and they injected all of Germany with this vaccine. But what happened is sometimes the body builds up resistance to these vaccines and produces another germ. So, as a result, another type of influenza was created, which was far more worse than the previous. It made people get fever for four and five days straight, 105 degrees.
Prabhupada: That is the way of... They have discovered this streptomycin, for tuberculosis, that if one takes too many injections of streptomycin, then it does not act.
Devotee: He becomes immune.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Brahmananda: So as a result of the vaccine they created a worse type of influenza, and they have nothing to counteract that worse type. So now they have to invent another type.
Prabhupada: These rascals give trouble to the people, especially in India. They are not after the vaccine. They will catch people and force them. Just see. This is going on. (indistinct) ...others are avoiding, they are going, going this way, that way. Sometimes they fall, they do not know, and capture (indistinct) These rascals are creating havoc. Only to kick them on their face with shoes. That's all. The so-called scientists and biologists and... They do not know anything.
Tamala Krsna: You were saying that all the scientists are fools and rascals but they may challenge, "How has your knowledge benefited you?"
Prabhupada: Your knowledge has not benefited you. Our taking your so-called science has benefited you because you are using it for Krsna. You have worked so hard, so result is going to Krsna. Hare Krsna. We are making the best... (indistinct) ...there is chair but we don't care for the chair. We can sit down. But if it is available we don't reject it. Therefore (indistinct) ...you have made a chair and (indistinct) ...Not that I require your chair, without your chair I will, shall die. That is not my policy. You rascal, you have done something, I'm using it for your benefit. That's all.
Tamala Krsna: They may argue that the knowledge which you say you have, it doesn't stop all of these things from happening to you. You're also suffering from symptoms of...
Prabhupada: Yes. But I'm trying because I have got this material body like you, so I have to suffer like you. But I'm making treatment. You are not making treatment.
Tamala Krsna: But the effects appear to be the same on everyone.
Prabhupada: No. We are not so much after doctors or medical...
Tamala Krsna: Your students also suffer from diseases and all...
Prabhupada: That's all right. So long the body's there, one has to suffer. That we tolerate. That is advised in the Bhagavad-gita,
matra sparsas tu kaunteya
sitosna-sukha-duhkha-dah
agamapayino nityas
tams titiksasva bharata
 [Bg. 2.14]
Titiksa, we know how to tolerate. We are not mad after curing. We know these things will happen so long I have got this body.
Tamala Krsna: So your difference is that you tolerate, whereas the scientists don't.
Prabhupada: Because we know that there is no cure. You do not know. You are trying to cure. That is the difference between you and me. We know so long I have got this body, I'll have to suffer. So we do not stop our business. We tolerate and do our business. That's all. But you have no business. You are simply trying, hope against hope. But it will never be fulfilled. Just like birds, bees, they do not know science. But so long they have got this body, they are also sometimes diseased. But they have no science, how they are cured? The same thing, just like this tree, they have no scissors, so how their leaves are being trimmed, falling down, (indistinct). We have discovered scissors, or clippers, but you have no clippers. How their hairs, or their leaves are being cut?
Devotee: Prabhupada, according to archeological findings primitive man, before, when they would get some disease they would just die. And now modern science has developed so nicely...
Prabhupada: That is there. And who is not dying now?
Devotee: Well, but...
Prabhupada: Well, well, well...
Devotee: ...they died at thirty, forty years old. Now we're dying at a hundred years old.
Prabhupada: So what is the difference? You die after forty years or hundred years? These trees dies after thousands years. Does it mean the trees are better than you? (Devotees laugh) If one dies after one thousand years, does it mean his life is successful?
Devotee: But all of us want to live longer.
Prabhupada: Why? Who is allowing to live long? If you trying to live longer, already trees are living longer than you. Then a tree is better than you? By living longer you want to take some credit, then trees should be given that credit. That is the point. Many big, big men, they lived for short time. Just like Sankaracarya lived for thirty-two years, Caitanya Mahaprabhu lived for forty-eight years. They're still living! There are so many followers of Sankaracarya, so many followers of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Krsna, told that He lived for 125 years and Krsna is still living.
Yasodanandana: Jesus Christ only lived for 36 years.
Prabhupada: Who's caring for any tree who lives for five thousand years? If that is your point, to live long is a great credit, there are already so many living entities who live long, longer than you.
Devotee: Well they don't... they may be living a long time but they don't have the same intelligence how to use their life span...
Prabhupada: (indistinct) ...the dogs also got intelligence, the hogs also got intelligence. The intelligence which you are claiming, that is all discussed in Srimad-Bhagavatam. It is said yes they are living, but you don't see that breathing. So then the vastra, the bellow, it is breathing. "Waa, waa, waa, waa." It is breathing in the (indistinct) and it is (indistinct), the vastra. It is breathing (indistinct). Here they are living but you don't see they have any sex enjoyment (indistinct). The dogs and hogs, they are having very good sex enjoyment, even on the street, without any restriction, and begetting three dozen children in a year. And they give credit to whom?
Tamala Krsna: Apart from science, we have very nice philosophy and literature, studying art.
Prabhupada: That is real science. Science we admit, but your science is not. You are trying to go against the laws of nature.
Tamala Krsna: What about our art and literature which just shows that...
Prabhupada: No. That is different department so far science is concerned. But pure science is useless, simply useless.
Tamala Krsna: If we acknowledge that, suppose we acknowledge that, but we say that still our cultural advancements are very great. The students say that...
Prabhupada: That's a fact. That's a fact.
Tamala Krsna: They say "Why...?" Many people I meet in the university they're not involved with science very much. Their main dealings are with culture, literature, arts, philosophy, music. They say... He feels we have very wonderful, beautiful things to study so why should we take up studying what you have to offer. There's so much to study with what we're doing. Why should we join your movement? Why should we give up studying such beautiful music and art and literature?
Prabhupada: Because you'll like it. And there is beautiful sounds, you'll hear it. Even animals hear it.
Tamala Krsna: But you sing the same song all the time.
Prabhupada: That's all right. But do you hear it? As soon as you chant Hare Krsna mantra hundreds of persons, they'll have to hear it. Ask them not to hear it. You go, you scientists, (indistinct) ...don't hear it. They hear it. That's all.
Tamala Krsna: But your music is of one chanting is very limited. Chanting...
Prabhupada: First of all you finish this limited, then you go to unlimited. You have no experience of this limited, what to speak of the unlimited. Krsna has described you mudhas, and you have taken (indistinct) are mudhas. (indistinct) ...to have to take credit in so many way that our conclusion is following the footsteps of Krsna. You are all mudhas.
Tamala Krsna: Just like some people may express God by chanting Hare Krsna but we can also express God through our musical talent. [break]
Prabhupada: You decorate God so nicely (indistinct) ...art painting, everything. They, putting art, so many thing, (indistinct). There's no scarcity of art painting.
Tamala Krsna: We are trying to attain the Supreme through our own music. We are doing that through our own mus...
Prabhupada: No. That is... That is another nonsense. We are trying to please the Supreme by the Supreme music. Golokera prema-dhana hari-nama-sankirtana. These sounds are not (indistinct) These are Vaikuntha songs. Narada muni bajaya vina radhika-ramana name. It is words by Narada Muni. It is not manufactured here.
Tamala Krsna: Don't you think that the great musicians like Bach, they were inspired by God to make this music.
Prabhupada: But they (indistinct) do not believe in God. So that is another thing. But this music is like you are hearing music ten thousand miles away. Similarly, this music is being imported from Vaikuntha many millions and many millions of miles away. So this is not just music of this mundane sound. Otherwise why you are not tired repeating it for many, many days? Any mundane sound, we repeat it, you cannot prolong it. You cannot prolong it. But we are (indistinct) only Hare Krsna and you can chant this. And you also hear it. You (are) attracted.
Yasodanandana: You have said that variety is the mother of enjoyment. So we are enjoying many different songs.
Prabhupada: Unless there is variety how we are enjoying.
Yasodanandana: Yes. So therefore you only have one song. But we have many songs.
Prabhupada: That's all right. Who cares for you.
Yasodanandana: So many people.
Prabhupada: No.
Tamala Krsna: But there are so many symphonies...
Prabhupada: That is our credit. We have got one song and we are attracting so many. You have got many songs but you attract yourself only. That...
Devotee: When there is a symphony orchestra, ten thousand, twenty thousand people have come to hear.
Prabhupada: But who takes it seriously?
Devotee: They all do.
Prabhupada: They stay here and go away. That's all... Temporary, temporary.
Devotee: But then they will also buy the record and listen at home.
Prabhupada: That's all right, but our song, we are chanting always, where is that song you have got? You have got (indistinct) ...he has to give new record. Nobody cares for the old record. (indistinct) ...then his business will stop. If you say that "I have given one song, that's all." (everybody laughs) Who'll care for it? That is our credit.
Devotee: But they will say only a select few are interested in that Hare Krsna song.
Prabhupada: That's all right. Not select few. They're increasing the number, many thousands. Cannot say select few. Select few was beginning (indistinct) ...I was chanting (indistinct). And now that it is not select few and it will increase. But the song is the same. That is our credit.
Tamala Krsna: Going back to science again...
Prabhupada: Going back... Where is science? Going back to hell again. Say "going back to hell again". Say like that. (chuckles) Because that is not science. That is our charge. You can say like that: "Going back again to hell."
Tamala Krsna: We wanted to talk to you about the moon. We have read your statement that you say that man has not gone to the moon, but we have seen...
Prabhupada: Not only now, I've said long, long years ago. That this is all childish.
Tamala Krsna: Yes. But how can you say this when we have so much proof that we have gone to the moon?
Prabhupada: But that proof is with you. I have not gone with you. I don't believe you because, according to you, unless you see, you don't believe. I have not seen so I don't believe.
Tamala Krsna: You have not seen the North Pole but you believe it.
Prabhupada: Ah ha. You materialistic people say that "We have not seen God, therefore don't believe." Therefore I say, "I have not gone with you, that you have gone to moon, I don't believe." That's all. Finished. How can I believe? You say that you have gone. But I have not gone with you. So how can I believe. That's all. That is my argument. You did not take me with you. How can I believe?
Tamala Krsna: Pictures.
Prabhupada: Why I shall believe pictures? I have not seen it. This is false picture. As you say that you could not saw God therefore don't believe. Therefore I say that I did not go with you, I don't believe.
Tamala Krsna: But we can arrange to put you on a ship to take you to the moon.
Prabhupada: When you take then I shall believe.
Devotee: Well, we can show some rocks. We can show some rocks that you won't find anywhere on this planet.
Prabhupada: No, that is refuted. The other scientists, they have said these rocks can be found here.
Tamala Krsna: One thing is that in your Vedas it says that the atom is the smallest particle but yet we have...
Prabhupada: No, smaller than atom there is. Atom is called paramanu. Then it is anugra paramanu, (?) smaller than the atom.
Devotee: Does that mean the electrons?
Prabhupada: Whatever you say. But sastra is there. (devotees laugh) Be convinced of your footing, (chuckles) otherwise you'll be defeated.
Devotee: Srila Prabhupada, the other day we were talking about proving different assumptions through archeological findings.
Prabhupada: That is also bogus. Archeological findings is bogus.
Brahmananda: But it seems that big skeletons of all these big dinosaurs...
Prabhupada: That we have already information. We have got timingala. Just like big house. They can swallow up, what is called?
Devotee: Whale. Whale.
Prabhupada: Whale (indistinct).
Tamala Krsna: No but these dinosaurs move on the land. They're not fish. And they're very big and we have information...
Prabhupada: So what is to you? You are also a created being. He's also created being. That's the (indistinct). You are not creator of the (indistinct)
Tamala Krsna: But you say that there was more intelligent life previously, whereas we see these dinosaurs were previously.
Prabhupada: But you do not see, you simply imagine.
Tamala Krsna: No. We have the skeletons.
Devotee: We have the bones, the bones of animals.
Prabhupada: But that's all right. There was a big animal, that's all. Just like you are a foolish animal, so there was a big animal. What is the difference? They are animals.
Tamala Krsna: But we have skeletons showing the men at that time also and their brains were very tiny.
Prabhupada: That you say. But I don't believe it. I have not seen.
Tamala Krsna: Well, they have skeletons in the museum.
Brahmananda: Very thick skulls and very small brains.
Tamala Krsna: Almost like a ape.
Prabhupada: That's all right. There was a big animal. So what is the difference? They are animals, big or small. You have seen a skeleton of pygmy man also. So where is that man now? You have seen pygmy man, you don't require archeological. So where is that man?
Tamala Krsna: No, they don't live any more. Now we are more intelligent. Previously there were pygmy men, very less intelligent, small, not nice looking. Now we have got more...
Prabhupada: According to our sastra you are going to be pygmy men. That is, there is proof, because you are not as strong as your forefathers. That's a fact. You are becoming dwarfer, dwarfer. According to our sastra you come to that pygmy, (indistinct) in due course of time. As it was before, so again the time is repeating, history repeating.
Tamala Krsna: Then that means our pygmy men were from a previous Kali-yuga?
Prabhupada: Yes. We say there was Kali-yuga. Four yugas are changing.
Tamala Krsna: Dinosaurs also?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Tamala Krsna: They're from Kali-yuga?
Prabhupada: Kali-yuga, any yuga. The things are going on by nature's way, prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani... [Bg. 3.27]. They're going on.
Devotee: But if we have bones from so many yugas ago...
Prabhupada: That's all right. There are 8,400,000 species of life. You have seen some of them. That's all.
Devotee: But the question is that why are there not any findings from only 5,000 years ago at the time when Krsna was here and...
Prabhupada: Your knowledge has come to Darwin's theory for 200, not even 200 years.
Devotee: I was just talking to Karttikeya. They have found this city 4,000 years old, (4,500).
Devotee: Where's that?
Devotee: It's near Kuruksetra, I think.
Brahmananda: Yeah, there's one in West India.
Prabhupada: So many things are coming according to their research.
Tamala Krsna: What about the city of Dvaraka? We do not find it remaining anymore.
Prabhupada: That's all right. Might have (indistinct).
Tamala Krsna: So we cannot believe what we don't see.
Hamsaduta: Actually the scientists don't accept this theory at all any more about the man...
Prabhupada: Eh?
Hamsaduta: The more advanced scientists, the more up-to-date ones, they reject this whole Darwin thing. But it's become so ingraded in the minds of the people that they have published, this Life, Time Magazine, they publish millions of books and sell it. People read about ape man, the man came from the ape and so on. It's become such a popular, it's like a fairy tale.
Prabhupada: Propaganda, it is propaganda. That's all. Propaganda, you can do any false thing (indistinct) say. This is called, propaganda is called in Bengali dasa cakre bhagavan butha (?). Dasa cakre bhagavan butha. Bhagavan, one gentleman's name was Bhagavan and he spread, conspired that let us, make us some joke that she has become ghost. So wherever he was going, the friend: "Oh, oh, a ghost, ghost, ghost, ghost!" (everyone laughs) "No, no, I am not..." (indistinct) ...this man has become crazy, why he (indistinct) Then he goes another friend, then he also says like that, "Oh, here is a ghost, here is a ghost, here is a ghost!" (everyone laughs) Then third friend, everyone, because they have conspired. Then he began to think, "I must have become ghost." (laughter) So certainly I'm... (indistinct) all friends have calling me, "Ghost, ghost." That's dasa cakre bhagavan... If you make propaganda, if he's not ghost, you can make him ghost. This is propaganda. This is called propaganda. By propaganda you can establish a false thing as real. That's all. This is going on. They know how to do it. They're expert because they're cheaters. They know how to do it.
Tamala Krsna: Cheating business.
Prabhupada: Yes. This is going on. Even something which is just... How Syamasundara has become victim. This rascal has given him some stone, and it is very valuable and he's jumping. (indistinct) ...has taken ten lakhs of (indistinct). Pukka propaganda. (indistinct) ...he has taken victim. That's all. He's not in his sense, even now, that if he has given me real gem, why I am unable to sell it for the last three, four years? Such a foolish.
Devotee: He's saying that he has to create the market.
Prabhupada: Good things, does it require...? That is propaganda. You have got some false thing, you have to make propaganda to prove it, that it is real.
Devotee: That is the proof it is false.
Prabhupada: Yes. And this man has taken money for... And he cannot supply even maintenance for his wife and girl. You have seen Malati?
Devotee: Yes Srila Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: Not properly dressed. And this poor girl is not properly dressed. And he's thinking he'll (indistinct).
Tamala Krsna: His head is in the clouds.
Hamsaduta: I think Bali Mardana became infected by Syamasundara. He saw that Syamasundara was going to be a millionaire so then he had to also become a millionaire. So he got Mrs. Toyota.
Prabhupada: He got a cheat wife. Eh? Mother said she cheated that "I am twenty-six years."
Tamala Krsna: So many things she cheated.
Prabhupada: Simply cheated.
Tamala Krsna: But he wanted to be cheated.
Prabhupada: Yes. Daughter (indistinct) and grand-daughter, all cheaters. Remember in the United Nation, (indistinct).
Tamala Krsna: She cannot speak Japanese.
Prabhupada: Everything cheated.
Tamala Krsna: She even said that she had four stillborn children. And we went to the hospital and there was no record of her having even been admitted to the hospital. Bali Mardana, she told him to wait downstairs while she gave birth to the four children and then two hours later she came down, she said, "Now it is finished." And he took her and drove away.
Prabhupada: Mesmerized.
Brahmananda: And there was talk that you had said that those four stillborn children were incarnations of Visnu.
Prabhupada: Anyway, she was think that by cheating this man I am becoming successful. Then she, without any restriction, she began to cheat.
Tamala Krsna: Yeah.
Prabhupada: And because he was Maharaja so he became, she became Maharani.
Tamala Krsna: But still he's being fooled by her. Those birds I think are the ones from the cage. Because they're being fed they're all, agree to be...
Prabhupada: ...put in cage. (indistinct) free. They can go away, but no...
Tamala Krsna: Just like, the human beings are like that.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Yasodanandana: Do you think that... As the Kali-yuga progresses the people are getting smaller. Does this mean that Krsna and His associates were much taller in stature than we are now?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Yasodanandana: They were much bigger.
Prabhupada: You have seen that Radha-Damodara temple, Krsna footprint.
Devotee: That means Krsna must have been fifteen or twenty feet tall?
Prabhupada: (indistinct) But it is a fact formerly people were taller. We have seen. In our childhood we have seen, when European, they were very tall.
Devotee: They were taller and they lived longer.
Devotee (2): That story about King Mucukunda when he was sleeping in the cave and he came out of the cave and looked outside and he said, "Oh, it must be Kali-yuga." because the trees were smaller and...
Prabhupada: Do you (indistinct) ...the mango trees now? Some of the trees (indistinct), the lemon tree, stunted. In Japan they grow many trees.
Devotee: In Japan they cultivate trees to be like that, very small. They have little orange trees. Orange trees are this big, orange trees.
Prabhupada: They are also becoming oranges. Japanese enjoy.
Hamsaduta: The Japanese and Chinese are very, very small.
Prabhupada: Did it...? [break] ...special. There is a proverb, kalo brahmana kota sudra bete mussulman kalki chele busi... (?) A brahmana, black... Brahmana's another name is sukla, white. So as soon as a brahmana is black then he's (indistinct) kalo brahmana. Kota sudra, and sudra, just like African, if they become white there is something mystery. Kalo brahmana kota sudra bete mussulman, Mohammedan, because Mohammedan means the Afghans, they are very tall, so a Mussulman is dwarf, a brahmana is black, the sudra is white, kalo brahmana kota sudra bete mussulman and kalki chelo, that means the bastard and (indistinct) ...these are all of the same class. Adopted son, he gets money, without any labor, he spends like anything. In your country there is adopted son?
Devotee: Yeah, yeah.
Prabhupada: Here there are many adopted son. A rich man has no son. He adopts somebody, rascal, and he spends money like... There are so many instance. Squanders. He'll be satisfied after finishing... There are many instances. In our childhood, many you have heard, you have seen one, when the adopted son (indistinct) ...big property and he was not satisfied to squander all the money unless it became (indistinct) That I've seen. He had many cars and I saw him, he was drenched by water, rainfall, sitting in a rickshaw. Nobody cares for him. When he was rich, big, big men would come to see him, even Burdwan Maharaja. Now I saw him that he was in Dharmatala, it was raining and he was sitting in a rickshaw. Nobody cares for him. And he was satisfied at that time after finishing the whole money. Otherwise hundreds and two hundred friends, there was very big house, bring, I mean to say, received as guests daily. (indistinct) His name was Arendranath(?) Sil.
Tamala Krsna: That's a Hindu name?
Prabhupada: Yes. Bengali.
Tamala Krsna: Seak?
Prabhupada: Sil. Sil means cultured. A cultured man is called sil. Sushil. Sushil means very culture, very... Sushil. So kalo brahm... This is unnatural. Kalo brahmana kota sudra bete mussulman, kanki chele... (indistinct) Now generally people, we saw, in our childhood, Europeans were very tall and now they are not coming (indistinct). Naturally when they'll not get sufficient nourishment, they'll be stunted. And Kali-yuga means decrease of nourishment, necessities of life decreasing. We see in such a rich man's house, there is no milk. Milk is one of the important nourishment foods. And there is no milk. So gradually there'll be no milk, no rice, no wheat, no sugar. These are stated. Where you'll get nourishment? And the mango, there'll be no pulp, only the seed. These are predicted. After all, you have to live by nature's gift, but these things will be finished. And Russia there is, already there is no rice. There is no fruit. There is no vegetable. Simply we eat meat.
Tamala Krsna: Therefore they cannot understand God.
Prabhupada: Yes. Not they. They understand, the people understand. But this, this rascal government. That I have studied. Russian people are not bad. They're as good as others. But this is... Just like in India, still the mass of people, they're very good. And too mu... Yesterday we saw, all rascals, all these politicians canvassing, all big, big fat rascals.
Devotee: We were noting that when they were giving their lectures at that opening of the train station they seemed very demonic.
Prabhupada: All demonic.
Brahmananda: Their faces were very shifty.
Devotee: So much anxiety and so much political dealings.
Prabhupada: All demon.
Tamala Krsna: All very fatty.
Prabhupada: They, they... the other's money.
Tamala Krsna: Yes. The peo... I didn't see one village man who was fatty, not one.
Prabhupada: Not one. They're extracting money from them, making them intoxicated and exploiting. This is the fault. Very precarious condition. [break] So if you can make one example [break] India, that spot, very good example, then we can capture the whole India. Simply, we have got enough land. Give them enough food. Make them stout and strong, both the animal and man. And chant Hare Krsna. Let them hear. Everything will be all right. Everything will be ideal.
Devotee: No one can object either.
Prabhupada: No. (chuckles)
Devotee: That's the beauty.
Prabhupada: Make the whole field green, [break] sumptuously, let the animals eat, let the man eat. They feel satisfaction and they [break] He knows some people, they are being exploited, animals are being exploited by these rogues, fat, big, big, fat rogues. Discovering some nonsense, scientific means and people are starving. There is no food. And they're busy in discovering scientific method.
Yasodanandana: Atomic bomb.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yasodanandana: Atomic bomb for India. That is the greatest paradox.
Prabhupada: There was a picture... some deputation came to the minister that we are starving. There is no food. The administrator, he went, "Of course I have no information that you have no, but we're advanced now. Come tomorrow, there will be radio message. Radio message, radio, there's television, ha television..."
Yasodanandana: Television.
Prabhupada: Television, tomorrow, from tomorrow you'll have television.
Yasodanandana: Instead of food.
Prabhupada: Instead of food you'll get television. (laughing) Advanced. This is going on. "I am hungry, sir. What shall I do with television?" That is the real answer. Say "I'm hungry. What shall I do with the television?" But he's pacifying, "Don't worry, you'll get television." This is science.
Tamala Krsna: Cheaters.
Prabhupada: This is science. People, for want of sufficient nourishment, they are becoming dwarf and they are discovering scientific method.
Brahmananda: Intoxication... By increasing the intoxication the desire for food reduces. You eat less.
Prabhupada: Yes. Therefore they are very much dizzy. And little hunger satisfied with meat. That's all. That is going on in the western country. The drinking... I have seen in airplane, bottles after bottle, they are drinking.
Devotee: Every day.
Yasodanandana: Actually they have run a survey in America and they have found out that the greatest drug takers are housewives. The housewives, they are taking these weight-watching pills and they are addictive amphetamines. They are taking them and it gives them energy and they don't want to eat so much. So they are very skinny. They drink a little coffee and smoke cigarettes and take some pills and that is all during the day. Finished. And they remain very slim. And they think this is nice. So gradually they are replacing foodstuffs with pills.
Prabhupada: That is nature's way because there will be no food in the future. So nature is training them how to live without food.
Tamala Krsna: The whole civilization is becoming expert in killing and dying. That's all.
Prabhupada: You have got some agricultural experience?
Devotee: Not at all.
Prabhupada: Not at all. Anyway, that not very difficult.
Devotee: No. I can take advice from the experts. That man with the white beard there, he's supposed to know very much. He's supposed to be very expert, and he speaks English. He's supposed to have agricultural experience.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yasodanandana: Jayapataka had no agricultural experience.
Prabhupada: Any city boy (indistinct) (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: From spiritual point of view this has no meaning. This is worldly affection. It is worldly affection. That is not very good asset for spiritual life. Asakti. One has to give up asakti. That is the process, renouncement. Voluntarily.Indian Doctor: Anasakta-manah.
Prabhupada: Anasaktya. Yes. Our Vedic process is that at a certain age you must retire from family life. Voluntary, forceful, giving up association.
Indian Doctor: Even there is worship (indistinct).
Prabhupada: Yes. So these are asaktis. This husband and wife dying together, it is admitted(?) because asakti is there. That asakti will help him, that the wife will become a husband next life, and the husband will become wife next. And in that way they'll have to take birth again.
Indian Doctor: Soul has got no tax.(?)
Prabhupada: Karma-bandha.
Indian Doctor: Karma-bandha and jiva.
Prabhupada: Find out this verse, Fifth Canto, Fifth Chapter.
Harikesa: Karmatmakam yena?
Prabhupada: Ah, sarira-bandha. Parabhavas tavad abodha-jato yavan na jijnasata atma-tattvam, yavat mano vai karma?
Harikesa:
parabhavas tavad abodha-jato
yavan na jijnasata atma-tattvam
yavat kriyas tavad idam mano vai
karmatmakam yena sarira-bandhah
Prabhupada: Bandha.
Harikesa: "As long as one does not inquire about the spiritual values of life, one is defeated and subjected to miseries arising from ignorance. Be it sinful or pious, karma has its resultant actions. If a person is engaged in any kind of karma, his mind is called karmatmaka, colored with fruitive activity. As long as the mind is impure, consciousness is unclear. And as long as one is absorbed in fruitive activity, he has to accept a material body."
Prabhupada: That's all. By labha-yoga (?) woman will become man and the man will become woman.
Indian Doctor: So long you are taking birth...
Prabhupada: What action you have got? Before that the verse is,
nunam pramattah kurute vikarma
yad indriya-pritaya aprnoti
na sadhu manye yata atmano 'yam
asann api klesada asa dehah
 [SB 5.5.4]
So this body is temporary, but it is very miserable. That they do not understand.
Indian Doctor: Kunape tri-dhatuke.
Prabhupada: That they do not understand. That as soon as you accept a material body, either a very rich man's body or poor man's body or any body, either brahmana's body or sudra's body, to accept material body means undergo miseries.
Indian Doctor: But you have no choice to accept. By the will of God...
Prabhupada: No, you have got... You can become free. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9]. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti...
Indian Doctor: Bhakti-avyabhicarini. I have got that tendency, bhakti, avyabhicarini-bhakti.
Prabhupada: No, no, simply to know Krsna. Mam ca 'vyabhicarena bhakti-yogena ya... So you cannot understand Krsna without bhakti. Bhaktya mam abhijanati [Bg. 18.55]. So without bhakti there is no possibility to understand Krsna. But if you understand Krsna, then you'll become free from this process of accepting material body.
Indian Doctor: Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami [Bg. 18.66].
Prabhupada: Yes. This is only business, to become Krsna conscious and avoid this botheration of repeating body, tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. Dehantara-praptih is there. If you want to stop dehantara-praptih, then you have to become Krsna conscious. There is no other way. But if you think that it is very pleasure to enter within the womb of mother and accept one body, and again come out and again work, and again die, and again enter. Bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19]. If you want this business, that is your choice. You can do it. But if you want to stop it, then this is the only way. Therefore sastra says na sadhu manye. It is not good. Nunam, read that verse.
Harikesa:
nunam pramattah kurute vikarma
yad indriya-pritaya aprnoti
na sadhu manye yata atmano 'yam
asann api klesada asa dehah
 [SB 5.5.4]
Prabhupada: Klesada asa dehah. Klesada, as soon as you get a body, klesada. May have good doctor friend, but I'll have to suffer. We can get some relief, but suffering is there. Therefore na sadhu manye. It is not good. So people are being trained up to become mad, pramattah. And do anything, bring money. This is the modern civilization. Nunam pramattah kurute vikarma [SB 5.5.4]. Things which are forbidden, they are doing that. Why? Indriya-pritaya aprnoti, only for sense gratification. They have no other ambition. Bring money and gratify senses. This is modern civilization. This is the exact explanation-nunam pramattah kurute vikarma [SB 5.5.4]. Black money, white money, this money, that..., never mind, bring money.
Indian Doctor: (laughter) By any way.
Prabhupada: Yes, this is modern civilization. Big man, big rich man means bring money some way or other. This is big man. This is Kali-yuga. Because if you have got money, you have got respect, you have got honor, you are recognized. So therefore they are after money. Bring money, that's all right. When I shall get money, I may have done black money, force money, this money, nobody will remember it. Bas. This is modern civilization. Bring money and enjoy sense. Nunam pramattah kurute vikarma [SB 5.5.4]. What for it is, struggle so much working hard? Yad indriya-pritaya. Only for the satisfaction of the senses. They have no other ambition. Because most of them, they do not believe there is next life. Most of them, 99.9 percent, they do not believe. Big, big professor, I have talked with so many big, big men in Europe. They have no... Our leaders also. The Munshi, he did not believe in the next life.
Indian Doctor: There is research in parapsychology in certain municipality(?) of India, they have proved that (indistinct).
Prabhupada: That they may do, a very great service, but we know it without going to the psychological process. We believe Krsna. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13], bas, finished. What is the use of going to the psychology and...?
Indian Doctor: But those...
Prabhupada: No, no, those who are fools, they may waste their time in that way. (laughter) But we are not so fool.
Indian Doctor: They are fools to not to think that they'll become...
Prabhupada: They are rascal fools because they do not take Krsna's word. Krsna says tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. Why should we bother? Our mission is simply to propagate Krsna's instructions. This is Krsna consciousness movement. We don't manufacture anything. So-called yoga, so-called meditation, so-called this and... We don't care for all this nonsense. Our only business is how to implement the instruction of Krsna, the rascals may understand and be happy. That is our mission. We haven't got to manufacture anything. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission. Yare dekha tare kaha krsna-upadesa [Cc. Madhya 7.128]. You simply carry the message of Krsna and try to deliver it to anyone you meet. This is our... We haven't got to manufacture anything. Therefore we are presenting Bhagavad-gita as it is. Take it, without interpretation. Don't spoil the whole thing. Interpretation means spoiling. Whole thing spoiled.
Indian doctor: Each man understands according to his own level of understanding.
Prabhupada: No. Suppose, just like you are medical man, you are giving somebody medicine, you are giving the direction. If he wants to be cured, he must take your direction. Not that somebody comes, "No, no, you can take it this way, you can do this." That is nonsense. That is nonsense. This nonsense we want to stop. Krsna is giving the instruction, param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan [Bg. 10.12], the Supreme Personality of Godhead. What business you have got to poke your nose and give interpretation? Are you bigger than Krsna? Krsna left it for you? This nonsense going on. Big, big swamis, big, big yogis, big, big politicians, simply misinterpreting, he's spoiling his own life and he's spoiling others. Bas. This is going on. Very serious condition.
Guest: You are not going to go down now?
Prabhupada: No.
Gopala Krsna: Would you like to go on the terrace, Srila Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: If I like, I can... (conversation in Hindi) Why I have taken so much trouble?
Guest: They are already traced out. So we come here.
Prabhupada: No, you come and preach. The country is going to hell, the human society is going to hell for misguidance. These rascal leaders, they're going to hell themselves and they're leading others. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanas te 'pisa-tantryam uru-damni baddhah [SB 7.5.31]. These fools and rascals are leading, they are going to hell, and they are taking the followers to the hell. This is going on. Stop this. At least in India. Save. That is real para-upakara. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission.
bharata-bhumite haila manusya-janma yara
janma sarthaka kari' kara para-upakara
 [Cc. Adi 9.41]
Para-upakara. Our India is not meant for exploiting others. Doing good to others, that is India's mission. Our teachers, our acaryas, do not teach us "Go and exploit others and bring money" -- British Empire. This is not India.
Indian Doctor: Even Jesus never taught that. These are the wrong followers.
Prabhupada: Jesus is different thing than that. I mean to say generally, generally, the people they want to exploit others.
Indian Doctor: It is the greed of the human being.
Prabhupada: Yes, but the mission should be, human being should be meant for doing good to others. Para-upakara. That para-upakara spirit is gone on account of losing our own culture. Otherwise, India's culture is para-upakara. India was open, "Come everyone, learn." Lord Jesus Christ also came here. All the Chinese, learned scholars, they used to come. The history is there. And India was open. Grhe satrum api praptam visvastam akutobhayam. This is Indian culture. Even the enemy comes, "Yes, please come, you stay." But later on, they took advantage: "Oh, they are very liberal, enter there." And still we are liberal. "Please come here, stay here and take prasadam free, and chant Hare Krsna." Open to everyone. I shall manage anyway, I shall travel, still I shall lay down my life and bring money. Come here, stay. Still we are liberal. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission, janma sarthaka kari' kara para-upakara [Cc. Adi 9.41]. First of all, make your life successful by Krsna consciousness. Then do good to others. Yesterday, I think, in Tehran, one boy came. He proposed that is it not good to help others? I immediately challenged, "What you have got you can help? What is your asset?" You cannot help. It is simply bogus proposition. If you can help, you can simply help by spreading Krsna consciousness, as Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, yare dekha tare kaha krsna-upadesa [Cc. Madhya 7.128]. "Sir, I have come to you." "Why?" "To request you that you become Krsna conscious." "How?" Man-mana bhava mad-bhaktah, "Always think of Me, just become My devotee, offer little obeisances." Anyone can do, a child can do. You cannot do? What is the difficulty to become Krsna conscious? Is there any difficulty? You haven't got to practice any yoga process, pressing your nose or keeping your head or this or that, no. Nothing. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru mam evaisyasi asamsayah [Bg. 18.65]. "Without any doubt you are coming back to Me." And that is the highest perfection, tyaktva deham punar janma naiti [Bg. 4.9]. There is no difficulty in preaching this Krsna consciousness. There is no difficulty to accept it. And the result is the supreme.
Indian Doctor: These are the people who have no faith.
Prabhupada: Therefore you have to canvass. They have no faith, I know that. Then why there is necessity of preaching all over the world? They have no faith, it is a fact. And you have to create faith. That is preaching. Padayor nipatya. That Prabodhananda Sarasvati,
dante nidhaya trnakam padayor nipatya
krtva ca kaku-s atam etad aham bravimi
he sadhavah sakalam eva vihaya durad
gauranga-candra-carane kurutanuragam
This is preaching. Prabodhananda Sarasvati, what is that? Kaku-satam padayor nipatya, kaku-satam krtva, satam, "I fall down on your feet and I am flattering you with folded hands." "Why? Why? What do you want to say?" "Yes, I have to say something." "What is that? Say it! Why you are becoming so humble?" "Yes, I have to say." "What? Say it!" He sadhavah, "You are a very nice sadhu. But you forget all nonsense."
Indian Doctor: That's krsna-upakara.(?)
Prabhupada: He sadhavah sakalam eva vihaya, "Whatever nonsense you have learned-forget." Then what to do? Kaku-satam bravimi sakalam eva vihaya durad gauranga-candra-carane kurutanuragam. "You just become devotee of Lord Caitanya. I am flattering you, I am falling down on your feet" -- this is preaching. And what is Caitanya Mahaprabhu? Yare dekha tare kaha krsna-upadesa [Cc. Madhya 7.128]. And if you do that, then what is the result? Na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah [Bg. 18.69]. If one is doing like that, Krsna immediately recognizes, "Oh, you are the best friend of Mine." So if you are recognized by Krsna, then what you want more? You are undergoing so much austerities and... To be recognized by God. And God says that "Immediately I recognize you." Whom? One who is doing this. Ya idam paramam guhyam mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati [Bg 18.68]. Na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah [Bg. 18.69]. Immediately. You may be a fool, you may be rascal, you may be illiterate. But if you do this, immediately Krsna recognizes. Krsna never said that unless one is a big grammarian, big scientist, big politician, big engineer, big doctor, then I can do it. No. Simply one who does this. Ya idam paramam guhyam [Bg 18.68]. What is that paramam guhyam? Sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66]. "Give up all nonsense. Surrender to Me." This is paramam guhyam. And they are simply manufacturing nonsense. So the time is very bad, but nature's law is very strict. We may defy it, "There is no God, there is no next birth, there is no nothing." We may say like that, but when death will come, you cannot say anything. Mrtyuh sarva-haras caham [Bg. 10.34]. Bas, all your talkings, all your intelligence taken away. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. Immediately transferred to another body. Daiva-netrena. Karmana daiva-netrena jantur dehopapattaye [SB 3.31.1]. Karanam guna-sango 'sya sad-asad-janma-yonisu [Bg. 13.22]. "No, no, I am Prime Minister!" "No, you must become a dog." Immediately. How can you protest? You cannot protest. You have acted like dog, just become a dog. Karanam guna-sango 'sya. Just like your medical science, you have infected the disease, you must suffer disease. Karanam guna-sangah, guna-sangah. There's infection.
Indian Doctor: Only in nirguna, a man can become nirguna by...
Prabhupada: Eh, don't talk of nirguna, first of all (laughter) become a dog.
Indian Doctor: Because the only thing that can bring nirguna, then you may stop from getting a dog. If you do the bhakti. That is what I mean.
Prabhupada: Nirguna means bhakti. Nirguna means bhakti. Sa gunan samatityaitan [Bg. 14.26]. That is nirguna. When you are untouched by the three gunas, then you are nirguna. That is not very easy job. That is not easy.
mam ca yo 'vyabhicarena
bhakti-yogena sevate
sa gunan samatityaitan
brahma-bhuyaya kalpate
 [Bg. 14.26]
Brahma-bhutah prasannatma na socati [Bg. 18.54]. Nirguna is not so easy thing. This is nirguna. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam [Bg. 18.66]. This is nirguna. Otherwise, everything sa gunan, everything sa gunan. Only fully surrendered to Krsna, nirguna. This is... So (Hindi) They are talking, "Yes, you take Bhagavad-gita without Krsna." They say it, and they are doing that.
Indian Doctor: Who?
Prabhupada: Anyone. Take Mahatma Gandhi. He was so great student of Bhagavad-gita. Did he preach krsna-bhakti? Bhagavad-gita minus Krsna, this is going on. Yes. Kamsa. Kill Krsna. This is going on. What is the meaning of Bhagavad-gita without Krsna? And everyone is preaching like this. Very worse condition of the world. Godlessness, and they'll suffer, there is no doubt. Prakrti is very strong. You can do whatever you like, but karanam guna-sango 'sya, that will act. You may be very proud of your so-called prestigious position, but the karanam guna-sango 'sya... Purusah prakrti-stho hi... [Bg. 13.22]. Find out.
Guest: Bhunkte prakrti-jan gunan.
Prabhupada: Bhunkte prakrti-jan gunan. He has to, he has to. Bhunkte prakrti-jan gunan. So we are now put into the material prakrti, and prakrti-jan gunan, we have to accept another body.
prakrteh kriyamanani
gunaih karmani sarvasah
ahankara-vimudhatma
kartaham iti manyate
 [Bg. 3.27]
This is the rascaldom. Jaya. Prasadam, you have got? What is the report?
Yasomatinandana: We are publishing monthly magazine every month now, one is coming out in a few days for Janmastami. We have changed new house, very good house.
Prabhupada: What is the rent?
Yasomatinandana: Land also...
Prabhupada: No, no, rent.
Yasomatinandana: Rent is thousand rupees. One thousand rupees, plus tax for government.
Prabhupada: Plus twelve hundred?
Yasomatinandana: No, plus two hundred tax. They are life members from Ahmedabad. They came to see Your Divine Grace.
Prabhupada: Oh, thank you. So give them place to stay. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: This is idea. Mano-rathena, by mental speculation, asato dhavato, they will come to materialism. As soon as they will hover over mental concoction, they will remain in the material pool, because mind is subtle form of matter.Acyutananda: Also, in their evidences by which they base their dialectic discussions, have they regarded the Vedic scriptures? They have avoided them very conveniently.
Prabhupada: No, there is no question of dialectic discussion. Suppose I am discussing, you are discussing something, but if I am imperfect, you are imperfect, what is the value of such discussion? That is the point. The party discussing something, whether he is perfect? If he is not perfect, then go on discussing. We first of all say that any conditioned soul is defective, and that is admitted. They say, "We are not perfect." "I think," they say. "In my opinion," they say. Never they say, the so-called scientists, "definite." And they cannot say it.
Mahamsa: That is like Dr. Frog's philosophy when they speculate.
Prabhupada: Yes. Simply speculation. So that kind of discussion, what is the value?
Gopala Krsna: It's always a hypothesis.
Prabhupada: If some children discuss some serious subject matter, what is the value? And they are all children in the cradle of nature, that's all. Prakrteh kriya.... Therefore it is word, prakrteh kriyamanani [Bg. 3.27]. Just like children -- "Ha! Sit down here" -- he has to sit down. Then where is his freedom to discuss? Prakrti says that "You sit down here. Don't go there." He has to accept. Then what is the value of discussion?
Acyutananda: Mainly, these Karl Marx, they were angry at the Christian church for exploiting the poor masses, and that's the reason...
Prabhupada: This is our...
Acyutananda: ...so he has attacked. He has taken vengeance on this.
Prabhupada: That they are doing. Still they are doing. Just like you said, some sprinkling water. They have no philosophy and they violate everything, what is stated there in Bible. Now you say that "Thou shall not kill;" they say, "Thou shall not murder." They are molding. Now this homosex they are sanctioning, man-to-man marriage. They are sanctioning abortion.
Acyutananda: Yes. Two homosexuals were married by a priest.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Tamala Krsna: Now they have a church where the priests are homosexuals and the attending people are homosexual.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Tamala Krsna: Now they have churches for homosex. That means the priest is a homosexual, and the persons who come are homosexuals. A special church for homosexuals.
Prabhupada: Just see. Is that religion?
Yasodanandana: The simple fact that the Christians have to sprinkle water to convert means that they do not have any potency to by philosophy, to preach to them with strong philosophy.
Prabhupada: There is no.... So, go on reading.
Harikesa: I'll backspace two sentences.
Acyutananda: [break] "...have allowed us to wither away these different countries, and the religionists, they are keeping all the food. They are not distributing it."
Yasodanandana: If we say that the Russia has no grains, they will say that they are big wheat producers in the southern part. They may counteract by saying, "We also produce..."
Acyutananda: They had to purchase wheat from America.
Gurukesa: Russia is importing its food grains now.
Prabhupada: So why they cannot produce sufficient, such a big country?
Gurukesa: And Eastern Europe, which is also communist, gets all its supplies from...
Prabhupada: No, what is their explanation. Russia is the biggest country.
Gurukesa: Land.
Hari-sauri: The reason was that there was no rain.
Prabhupada: Then? Then you have to depend on rain, and when we say, parjanyad anna-sambhavah... Hm? And yajnad bhavati parjanyah [Bg. 3.14]. That means, rascal, you take one side, that ardha-kukuti-nyaya. Cut the chicken half, and separate the mouth -- it is expensive -- and keep the rear side. You get eggs. (laughter) So this is ardha-kukuti-nyaya. The rascal does not know that if you separate the mouth there will be no egg.
Gurukesa: They say that's depending upon nature. But they do not know who...
Acyutananda: The word nature should be condemned. That.... No scientific-minded person can say the word nature.
Prabhupada: No, they do not know what is nature. Nature is an instrument, and there must be an operator. So that they do not know, the operator. Just like a child is thinking the motorcar is going automatically. He does not know there is a driver. The child sees that the airplane is flying. They think it is automatically going. And there is a pilot, he does not know. Similarly, these rascals, they are studying nature, but nature is an instrument only. It is being operated by Krsna. Mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa-caracaram [Bg. 9.10]. They have practical experience that without operator a machine cannot work. In the huge machine, how it is working unless there is operator? That they do not know.
Gurukesa: That's what they never trying to find.
Prabhupada: Mudhah nabhijanati mam ebhyah param avyayam. Find out this verse. Mudhah nabhijanati mam ebhyah param avyayam. Mudha. Therefore they are all mudhas. So we are not going to be misled by the mudhas. That is not possible. We take the instruction of the topmost intelligent person, Krsna. I think our Svarupa Damodara has said that. Where is that book? He has given: "Krsna, the topmost scientist." Yes. "Perceiving the supreme scientist, Sri Krsna." He has given this article.
Acyutananda: How do we know that Vedavyasa is not defective like other living beings?
Prabhupada: Huh?
Acyutananda: How do we know that Vedavyasa is not...
Prabhupada: He is not defective because he is speaking what he has heard from Narada. Therefore he is not defective. Just like we are speaking. We are not perfect. We are also ordinary human being, but people are taking that "Bhaktivedanta Swami has done wonder." What is that wonder? I am speaking Bhagavad-gita as it is, that's all.
Acyutananda: Like the Mormon religion in America...
Prabhupada: No, no, don't bring any other.... That is...
Acyutananda: He claimed that an angel...
Prabhupada: If you accept.... We are taking from God. Krsna instructed Brahma, Brahma instructed Narada, Narada instructed Vyasadeva, and therefore we are taking.
Acyutananda: So it is a novel. Like Shakespeare wrote Hamlet...
Prabhupada: Yes. It may be novel for you because we take you as a mudha. We don't give any credit. We say.... Find out this, mudho nabhijanati mam ebhyah param.
Tamala Krsna: I have this, mudho 'yam nabhijanati loko mam ajam avyayam [Bg. 7.25]?
Prabhupada: Hm hm.
Tamala Krsna:
naham prakasah sarvasya
yoga-maya-samavrtah
mudho 'yam nabhijanati
loko mam ajam avyayam
 [Bg. 7.25]
"I am never manifest to the foolish and unintelligent."
Prabhupada: Yes, the fools. He does not know Krsna; therefore he is fool. Read it.
Tamala Krsna: "For them I am covered by My eternal creative potency, yogamaya, and so the deluded world knows Me not, who am unborn and infallible."
Mahamsa: So who is fool is defined as avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritah [Bg. 9.11].
Prabhupada: Hm?
Mahamsa: Who is a fool, that is defined in the other verse, avajananti mam mudha.
Prabhupada: Yes. Manusim tanum asri... That one who considers Krsna as ordinary human being, he is mudha. So read the purport.
Tamala Krsna: "It may be argued that since Krsna was present on this earth and was visible by everyone, then why isn't He manifest to everyone now? But actually, He was not manifest to everyone. When Krsna was present there were only a few people who could understand Him to be the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In the assembly of Kurus, when Sisupala spoke against Krsna being elected president of the assembly, Bhisma supported Him and proclaimed Him to be the Supreme God. Similarly, the Pandavas and a few others..."
Prabhupada: Sisupala could not see, although Krsna was present there, but Bhisma could see. So you require special eyes.
Tamala Krsna: Tesam satata-yuktanam [Bg. 10.10].
Prabhupada: Yes. Premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santah... [Bs. 5.38]. So unless you are qualified, how you can see Krsna? This is the point. Krsna is there, and the rascal Sisupala could not see Him, but Bhisma could see Him. So they say, "Can you show me God?" Even God comes before you, unless you have got the qualified eyes you cannot see Him. Therefore qualification required. Premanjana-cchurita. When your eyes will be annointed with, what is called?
Tamala Krsna: Salve of love.
Acyutananda: Ointment.
Tamala Krsna: Salve of love.
Acyutananda: Ointment.
Prabhupada: Savoth?
Tamala Krsna: Salve, salve.
Prabhupada: What is the spelling?
Tamala Krsna: Salve, s-a-l-v-e.
Prabhupada: Oh, salve of love, yes. So that is required. Your.... Therefore tat-paratvena nirmalam. You have to make your senses purified; then bhakti will begin. Otherwise it is karma. If your senses are not purified, then it is karma. There is a difference between karma and.... Premanjana-cchurita... What is that? Sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. If you think yourself that "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am brahmana," "I am this," "I am that," then you are not upadhi-mukta; therefore you cannot see Krsna. You can see Krsna when you are no more within these upadhis, pure soul. Brahma.... That is real brahma-bhutah, to understand the position of the soul and engage the soul in the service of the Lord. Then it is perfect. Go on.
Tamala Krsna: "Similarly, the Pandavas and a few others knew that He was the Supreme, but not everyone. He was not revealed to the nondevotees and the common men. Therefore in the Gita Krsna says that but for His pure devotees, all men consider Him to be like themselves. He was manifest only to His devotees as the reservoir of all pleasure. But to others, to unintelligent nondevotees, He was covered by His eternal potency. In the prayers of Kunti in the Srimad-Bhagavatam (1.8.18), it is said that the Lord is covered by the curtain of yogamaya, and thus ordinary people cannot understand Him. Kunti prays: 'Oh my Lord, You are the maintainer of the entire universe, and devotional service to You is the highest religious principle. Therefore I pray that You will also maintain me. Your transcendental form is covered by the yoga-maya. The brahmajyoti is the covering of the internal potency. May You kindly remove this glowing effulgence that impedes my seeing Your sac-cid-ananda-vigraha [Bs. 5.1], Your eternal form of bliss and knowledge.' This yogamaya curtain is also mentioned in the Fifteenth Chapter of the Gita. The Supreme Personality of Godhead in His transcendental form of bliss and knowledge is covered by the eternal potency of brahmajyoti, and the less intelligent impersonalists cannot see the Supreme on this account. Also in the Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.14.7) there is this prayer by Brahma: 'O Supreme Personality of Godhead, O Supersoul, O master of all mystery, who can calculate Your potency and pastimes in this world? You are always expanding Your eternal potency, and therefore no one can understand You. Learned scientists and learned scholars can examine the atomic constitution of the material world or even the planets, but still they are unable to calculate Your energy and potency, although You are present before them.' The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krsna, is not only unborn, but He is avyaya, inexhaustible. His eternal form is bliss and knowledge, and His energies are all inexhaustible."
Prabhupada: So, go and discuss. (end)
