Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: ...meeting, our life members are not coming?Mahamsa: Yes, it is (indistinct). Many life members came, Prabhupada. There were many cars also. [break]
Prabhupada: No mangoes are hanging. [break] "Krsna is everything," is little difficult for everyone, eh? They want hodge-podge -- "Everything is all right." So has anybody offered some lump sum for the construction?
Mahamsa: Not as yet, Prabhupada. Actually they are all waiting for Mr. Piti(?) to make his pledge. They have some kind of... These Marwaris... [break]
Prabhupada: I did not see Hari Prasad.
Mahamsa: He was there.
Prabhupada: He was there?
Mahamsa: Oh, yes, his whole family was there. Mr. Pulla Reddy was there.
Prabhupada: Yes, Pulla Reddy, I have seen. [break] He is so much convinced in with our philosophy in Bombay, he is going to take sannyasa.
Mahamsa: Oh, in Hare Krsna Land?
Prabhupada: Yes. Although he is officially Shaivite, but he says that "I am so much convinced with your speech."
Pancadravida: Who is that person, Srila Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: I do not remember the name.
Nitai: He lives in that same building?
Prabhupada: Yes. Downstairs.
Nitai: Oh. He comes to every one of your lectures.
Mahamsa: I will just tell him that we do not need the car.
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] ...between nitya-mukta and nitya-baddha.
Pancadravida: The nitya-mukta devotees, Prabhupada, they are always engaged in the service of the Lord, and every thought of theirs is engaged at the lotus feet of Krsna, of serving Him completely. And when they appear on this earth, persons like yourself, they only come here for the purpose of reclaiming the fallen conditioned souls. They have no reason to come to this material world for their own enjoyment. That is never on their mind. But the nitya-bandhas, they are here simply to try and manipulate this material nature so that they can engage their own senses in gratification either of themselves or their extended self like their family. So the difference between the two is one is serving Krsna, the other is simply serving his senses.
Prabhupada: Is that all right?
Satsvarupa: Eternally liberated and eternally conditioned.
Prabhupada: Eternally liberated, they never forget Krsna. There is no period throughout the existence... There is no question of existence. It is their all existence. Never touched by maya, forgetfulness. That is nitya-mukta. [break]
Pancadravida: Srila Prabhupada, you were talking that a person, he can come up to that position of nitya-mukta by either following the principles of sadhana-bhakti or causeless mercy, or you said there was also the question of krpa, the krpa-siddhi, that one can attain perfection...
Prabhupada: No, that is sadhana-bhakti.
Pancadravida: One gets mercy by sadhana-bhakti.
Prabhupada: Yes. In the stage of sadhana-bhakti... Sadhana-bhakti is for the conditioned soul. And siddha. Siddha means they are already mature. Siddha means nitya-siddha.
Pancadravida: [break] Also, Prabhupada you said that if one does not worship Panca-tattva, whatever actions he performs, even if he is so-called Krsna-bhakta, is to be considered offensive.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Pancadravida: Does this mean other sampradayas also?
Prabhupada: Other sampradayas?
Pancadravida: For instance, Ramanuja sampradaya or also Madhva-sampradaya, they sometimes don't accept Panca-tattva as being supreme. So is their actions also considered offensive even if they are acting within sampradaya?
Prabhupada: Yes, yes, yes.
Mahamsa: [break] ...Ramanuja sampradaya, do they have a chain of disciplic succession, bona fide chain, to this present day?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Mahamsa: And the other sampradayas also?
Prabhupada: Yes. Chain must be there. Now, whether strictly following the..., that is another thing.
Pancadravida: [break] ...invited us to their program at Udupi, Madhva-sampradaya. When they are changing the acaryas every two years, they extended one invitation to come for their program, main temple program.
Prabhupada: So why did you not accept?
Pancadravida: There was no transportation available.
Prabhupada: Transportation?
Mahamsa: Should we go to such programs, Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: If they invite, why not? That means they recognize. But one thing, you be certain whether this Tirupati temple is going to allow our men.
Mahamsa: I will send somebody tomorrow in advance to make preparations.
Prabhupada: Where?
Mahamsa: To Tirupati. Actually Guru-krpa and Yasoda-nandana, they've had darsana of Lord Balaji.
Prabhupada: Oh. Then it is all right. They had no difficulty.
Mahamsa: Yes. And also Manibandha had once been, last time in the Hyderabad program was...
Prabhupada: Oh, then it is all right.
Pancadravida: They gave Guru-krpa and Yasoda-nandana special darsana. They took them into the circle where usually they'd only let special people...
Prabhupada: Oh, then it is all right. Then that's all right.
Mahamsa: [break] ...very impressed because we have nagara-kirtana all over the place.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Mahamsa: And if they are impressed, they can, when our construction starts, they will be very willing to also give a very huge donation. They are capable of...
Prabhupada: How many people are going altogether?
Mahamsa: About fifteen devotees.
Prabhupada: That's nice. So we have to go by plane?
Mahamsa: No, we will go by bus.
Prabhupada: Oh. Bus is going every day?
Mahamsa: Yes, there is two very special buses. It costs forty-two rupees per ticket to go there.
Prabhupada: [break] ...wood is the strongest of all wood, this. (taps wood with cane or something) Very strong.
Pancadravida: What kind of wood is that?
Prabhupada: It is guava tree.
Mahamsa: Guava, oh.
Prabhupada: Yes. You know what is that lattu, we used to play? What is the English?
Mahamsa: Spinning?
Prabhupada: Like a small, and we used to...
Mahamsa: Oh, top, a top. Like that. It's top.
Prabhupada: Top. What is called, top?
Mahamsa: That is made of this, Prabhupada? Oh. (laughs)
Prabhupada: Very strong.
Pancadravida: [break] ...tops to gamble. That's part of the...
Prabhupada: Gambling religion. Now here also, they are advertising gambling, this government. Deteriorating, the whole world is deteriorating and suffering. Suffering is increasing. Still they are so rascal, they cannot understand that what is the advancement. They have become so less intelligent.
Pancadravida: Usually, though, it is the children. They gamble for cookies and candy and things like this.
Prabhupada: No, children they learn it from their parents. Otherwise they do not know. [break] ...by memory, by mercifulness... People are not so merciful now. Suppose in your presence somebody is being killed. You avoid to stand there. No more merciful. What to speak of the animals? If a man is killed, nobody will take care. I have heard it in America that if somebody is killed or attacked, nobody will go to help. Is it not?
Mahamsa: Yes.
Prabhupada: So the mercifulness has gone. And what to speak of religiosity? That is completely gone. These things will reduce: mercifulness, religiosity, memory, bodily strength, and so many, eight, eight. They are mentioned in the Bhagavata. Religious principles.
Pancadravida: And you were writing that it is just a little bit of truthfulness is left.
Prabhupada: Yes. You secure dhatun from the tree. Ask them. The three dhatun they gave, that is finished. [break] ...water is full, one can take bath.
Mahamsa: Swimming.
Prabhupada: Yes. [break]
Pancadravida: ...that these Old and New Testament and Koran, they are the sastras of the (sic:) yauvanas. They are not the same as the Vedic sastras. They are not as... They are not bona fide like that.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Pancadravida: Does this mean they are not authentic or... How did they come here?
Prabhupada: Who?
Pancadravida: These Bible and Koran, how did they get here? They were just inventions or what?
Prabhupada: Convention means they are partially good for the time being, that's all. They are not eternally... Just like in the Bible it is said, "Thou shalt not kill." (chuckles) But this is not, does not come within the category of eternal religion. People were so corrupted that they were forbidden, "No, don't do this." "Thou shalt not covet," a little moral instruction. That also, they could not follow. There is no religion. And little God consciousness, "There is God, kingdom of God," little idea for the persons who could understand. Otherwise, do you think that if somebody says, "Thou shalt not kill," is that any religious principle? It is ordinary thing. Where is the question of God?
Pancadravida: These things, they are also in (sic:) Manu-samhita?
Prabhupada: That is for... Manu-samhita forbids completely. Manu-samhita is not religion. It is moral principles for conducting society. Religion is how to become devotee of Krsna. That is religion. That is natural. [break] "...shalt not kill," this is expectation. "Someday, in future, one may become religious." That's all. Because by killing, killing, they are going downer, down. So if they stop killing, some day they will be able to understand what is religion. Sukrti. Because, without being freed from all sinful activities, nobody can understand what is God. Therefore about God, in India they can understand very easily. In other countries they cannot. Very few because always engaged in sinful activities, all forbidden sinful activities. Just like you said that gambling has been introduced in religion. Killing has been introduced in religion. What is that religion? The more they take to the sinful activities, the more they become implicated -- again birth and birth and birth and birth. Unless one is completely free, he cannot understand what is God. Yesam anta-gatam papam. You know this verse? The Bhagavad-gita, yes.
Pancadravida: When one becomes free of sinful activities, then he can begin devotional life.
Prabhupada: Yes, yes.
yesam tv anta-gatam papam
jananam punya-karmanam
te dvandva-moha-nirmukta
bhajante mam drdha-vratah
 [Bg. 7.28]
To stick to Krsna bhajana is not so easy, that you will go on committing all sinful activities and you will become Krsna devotee. That is not possible. You have to give up, and you have to come. But this is the process. You will be free, and you will understand. Guru-krsna krpaya [Cc. Madhya 19.151]. If one follows bona fide guru's instruction and he is engaged in devotional service, then it is possible. Then it is possible. Otherwise, if he does whimsically then it will be a failure. He must carry out the instruction of the guru, bona fide guru. Guru means bona fide guru, not pseudo guru. And according... What guru will advise? To be engaged in Krsna's service. These two things will help him. Otherwise it is not possible. Guru-krsna-krpaya: "By the mercy of guru and by the mercy of Krsna." So both of them should be served. That is the process, not that "Now I have become advanced devotee. I don't require to serve guru." Neither, "Oh, I am serving my guru. I don't care for Krsna," no. Parallel line. Not that "One line I can walk," no. Parallel line. Guru-krsna-krpaya paya bhakti-lata-bija [Cc. Madhya 19.151]. Therefore in our temple, along with Deities, guru is also worshiped. Gurusu nara-matih, if one accepts guru -- "Guru is guru, guru is guru" -- as ordinary human being, then that is offense, naraki buddhi.
Mahamsa: That kind of worship is eternal.
Prabhupada: Yes. Janme janme pita sei. Cakhu-dan kilo jei, janme janme pita sei.
Pancadravida: Where is that sloka you were quoting last night from that ending gokala.
Prabhupada: Go-kharah, go-kharah. That is in Bhagavata. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma idya-dhih [SB 10.84.13]. You give him that sloka, (indistinct). So actually at the present moment the whole world is full of go-kharah, that's all, animals. Everyone thinks in terms -- "I am this body," that's all. He is not human being, but every so-called civilized man is thinking like that. So where is the civilization of human being? All go-kharahs, animals. [break] ...because if you keep all these ingredients, life will come. Is it not?
Pancadravida: When the soul is entering, they are all complete?
Prabhupada: No, no, no. If you keep... A man is dead, and keep his body. So it will decompose, but the life will come. So many worms will come. So these are... If you say that chemicals, these material, then the chemicals are there, and life is coming. Now you take this chemical and prepare. You cannot say, "Although these chemicals are there, there is some deficiency. Therefore the life is not coming." No, why do you say like that? Life is coming. That man is not coming, but the life is coming. So these are ingredients for life. You prepare. You bring that man. Still, the rascal will say that life is made from matter. Not even gentlemen, what to speak of becoming scientist? You prepare. "No, in future we shall see." And he is getting Nobel Prize. Just see how the human society has become full of rascals, go-kharah. They cannot prove; still they will insist, "Yes." And so far God is concerned, we learn from sastra that God's two energies are working like heat and light. So energies are working, we can see. How these mangoes have come unless there is some energy? So therefore the energy is working. Therefore God is there. Just like as soon as light is there, although we are in the room we can understand that sunlight is there. As soon as the darkness is there, we understand that there is no more sun. So in the presence of energy... Just like in the motor car, before starting, you round the key, and it becomes, "Gut, gut, gut, gut." Now your current is there. The energy is there. So there are symptoms. By symptoms we can understand there is God. Where is the difficulty? And Krsna is explaining, "Here, just see the symptom. The taste in the water I am." Then why do you say that you have not seen God? You are liar. You create that taste? Now take sea water and make that taste. Why do you take water from here and there? Sea water is there. Now you take it, and by chemical you create the taste. Why don't you? Therefore, unless God is there, you cannot do that, or God's sanction, you cannot do that. This is reasonable understanding of God, apart from seeing God. And because the taste is there -- Krsna says-therefore God is there. According to your capacity, you have to see God like that. You cannot see immediately Krsna, with dvi-bhuja murali, playing on flute. That you have no capacity. You have to see God like that. So when the rubber stamp is going to be delivered?
Devotee: I will bring it today.
Prabhupada: So one must be intelligent enough to see God. Now, the bird I do not see, but I am hearing the sound. So one must know there is a nice bird. Because the varnasrama-dharma is lacking, nobody is being educated as a brahmana. They have lost all knowledge. Suppose in the society there is nobody educated as engineer; you don't find any engineers. So who will understand this? Unless one becomes brahminical qualified, they cannot understand. Therefore a class of men must be there, trained up as brahmana. Then the understanding of God consciousness will be there. Otherwise finished. So now this rascal civilization, they are simply creating sudras. What they will understand? Simply sudras. Factories and this, for technology. And because they are getting money, they are thinking, "Now we have got everything." On the money standard. Actually they have no knowledge. Just like we find a expert electrician and we pay him sufficiently, say hundred dollars, but does it mean that he has knowledge? He is expert in that sudra's work, that's all. That does not mean, because he has got money, he has got all knowledge. But people accept, "Oh, he has money. His life is successful. He has got all knowledge." That's all. And if you go, if you speak about God, "Oh, these men are beggars. They have made a profession." That's all. So if the society does not accept the proposition of Krsna, catur-varnyam maya srstam [Bg. 4.13], they will suffer because the God consciousness will be lost. It is already lost. It may not be that everyone is God conscious, but a section... Just like it may not be that everybody is a physician, but a physician must remain there, must be there so that when one is difficulty by disease, the physician may help him. Similarly, if in the society the brahmana class and above, post-graduate of brahmana class, Vaisnava, is not there, then the whole society will spoil . They will indulge in this meat-eating and drinking wine and illicit sex. Then it will be hell, and it has already become. Whole world is full of hellish person. In a civilized country like America you cannot walk alone in the street at night. India is still honest. Any part of India, you can walk. Because the more sinful. Is it not? In New York, especially in Brooklyn or anywhere, you cannot walk alone. Is it not? Yes. Your life is at risk. That Central Park, nobody can walk there. I have heard from many women that they rape. The negroes, they capture and rape. Life is unsafe even in a civilized city like New York. So what is this civilization? Our (name withheld) was... [break] ...Park. (Name withheld) our. Yes, she said.
Mahamsa: She said?
Prabhupada: No, no, she said. She was captured by a group of negroes to rape her. [break] That girl, what is his name? (name withheld) wife?
Satsvarupa: (Name withheld).
Prabhupada: She was raped.
Satsvarupa: Trinidad.
Prabhupada: Yes. She was raped.
Pancadravida: How do you teach a varnasrama college? In varnasrama college if somebody comes in... They say, "I want to be ksatriya" or "I want to be vaisya." Is it like that?
Prabhupada: No, that will be tested by the teachers, what for he is fit. He will be test by the guru.
Pancadravida: Who will teach him to be a ksatriya or who will teach him to be a vaisya?
Prabhupada: A ksatriya, a brahmana. Just like if you want to learn music, you have to go to a musician.
Pancadravida: So where will we get ksatriyas and...?
Prabhupada: That is in the sastra. Anyone can learn it. Just like if you want to be doctor, so you must have this qualification. Similarly, these things are stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Ksatriya means if there is fight, he must go forward first of all, risking his life. That is ksatriya.
Pancadravida: So we have men who could teach this? Do we have men...?
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] Because he knows how to teach. That's all.
Pancadravida: The brahmanas, they all become devotee... They would all be engaged in devotional life as...
Prabhupada: This is also devotion, to teach a ksatriya, because this is necessary in the society. This is also devotion.
Pancadravida: And vaisyas?
Prabhupada: Just like when Krsna is fighting. Krsna is fighting, killing the demons. So that is also devotion, if you help Krsna by killing demons, not that simply by chanting, you supply... Just like Bhismadeva. He even injured Krsna, and Krsna took it very pleasant. Instead of throwing flowers, he pierced His body with arrow. So everything for the service. If Krsna is pleased being pierced by the arrow the devotee will do that. His only business is how to please Krsna. Just like, the example is given by Visvanatha Cakravarti that when a man kisses a woman and bites her, she becomes pleased. Is it not? Is not a fact that that biting is pleasing? Is it pleasing? But sometimes it is pleasing. So one has to learn where to bite and when to... (chuckles) But if a rascal thinks that "Biting is pleasing. I shall bite always," then he is a rascal. (laughter) [break] ...lying down on the Yamuna beach, on the sand with His friends. And if we think, "No, there is no need of bedding of Krsna. He was lying down on the Yamuna beach, so He will lie down on the floor." So is... That conclusion is very nice?
Mahamsa: No.
Prabhupada: So we must know how to please Krsna. Generally, the sravanam kirtanam visnoh [SB 7.5.23], that is pleasing. Therefore these rules and regulation for everyone. But when one becomes mature devotee, he knows how to please Krsna. He knows.
Nitai: One question came up the other day when I was talking with this clergyman.
Prabhupada: Clergyman?
Nitai: Yes, that man I was talking to was a clergyman.
Prabhupada: Where he was?
Nitai: He was on the airplane when we were coming here to Hyderabad. And he was asking what our program was. And I was telling him that first of all, in order to relieve the confusion of society, we wanted to establish the Vedic culture with this varnasrama system. And he asked me what would be the program that we would have for a man who works in the factory...
Prabhupada: He is a sudra.
Nitai: Would we retrain him as a farmer?
Prabhupada: No, if he is prepared. If not, let him remain. But we can utilize that sudra also.
Nitai: He can remain in the factory.
Prabhupada: Yes. But he cannot do the work of a brahmana. He cannot be trained as a preacher. But he can help. Just like my legs. The legs cannot do the work of brain, but it can help me. I am walking. So leg is as important as the brain. Similarly, sudra is as important as the brahmana, provided he helps the movement, Krsna conscious. That is wanted, not that artificially a sudra should be working as a brahmana, no. But everyone should be engaged in Krsna consciousness. That is required.
Nitai: So in that case he is a sudra, and he is also doing the work of a...
Prabhupada: Then he is not a sudra. One who is engaged in Krsna's service, he is neither brahmana nor sudra. He is devotee. He is brahma-bhuta [SB 4.30.20]. Brahma-bhuyaya kalpate [Bg. 14.26]. Apparently he looks like sudra. Just like we have got so many men from different quarters, but we do not belong to that quarter any more. Vaisnave jati-buddhih. Therefore anyone who takes, "Oh, here is an American Vaisnava, here is an Indian Vaisnava," that is naraki. He is Vaisnava. That understanding required.
Mahamsa: Just like that devotee who was making garlands for Krsna.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Mahamsa: He is a devotee. He is not a sudra making garlands.
Prabhupada: No. He is not a ordinary gardener.
Pancadravida: Or that devotee who was making leaf bowls for worshiping the Ganges.
Prabhupada: Any engagement, any engagement for Krsna, he is Vaisnava. If he is under the guidance of his spiritual master and doing the business according to the direction, he is Vaisnava. He is above all these.
Pancadravida: A sudra, if he is working, he cannot take brahmana initiation, but he can take hari-nama, is that it?
Prabhupada: Just like sometimes our men, my devotee, they wash the cupboard. Does it mean he is a methar(?)? No. He can go to the Deity room also. He is not a methar(?) or sweeper. But sometimes we do that. So devotee is above all these consideration. But because there is management, they should appear as brahmana, as sudra, as ksatriya, like that.
sa gunan samatityaitan
brahma-bhuyaya kalpate
mam ca vyabhicarini
bhakti-yogena yah sevate
 [Bg. 14.26]
A devotee, because he is working as a sudra, he is not a sudra; neither he is a brahmana. He is already in the spiritual platform. But for management we have to do that. One can do the sudra's work nicely -- let him be engaged in that way. Why he should imitate?
Mahamsa: Does he get second initiation?
Prabhupada: Everything he will get.
Mahamsa: He gets.
Prabhupada: Yes. Second initiation means recognized: "Now he has become fully competent Vaisnava." Just like master is teaching the servant, "Now you give massage in this way, this way." But that does not mean he has become servant.
Pancadravida: What if the person working as sudra says, "I can do so much. I can...,"
Prabhupada: First of all, try to understand. A devotee is neither brahmana nor sudra. He may act like a sudra, but he is not sudra. He may act like a brahmana; he is not brahmana. He is Vaisnava. Just like gopis. The gopis, they are village cowherds women. They are, according to social construction, they are not very high class. They did not belong to the brahmana class. But their worship, method of worship, has been taken the highest. Ramya kacid upasana vrajavadhu-vargena. They were village girls, and practically their character was also not good. Because at dead of night they are going to Krsna. But why they have been taken as the most topmost devotee of Krsna? Because the love was so high class. It is the test, how much one has learned to love Krsna. That is wanted. Apparently he may appear as a brahmana, a sudra or vaisya. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. The only business is to see: sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir adho... [SB 1.2.6]. Aiye. Hare Krsna. Jaya. That is wanted.
Pancadravida: What if the person cannot chant sixteen rounds a day. He says, "I can't..."
Prabhupada: Then he is not even a human being. He is a rascal. That's all. He is not a human being. What to consider of talking...? Don't talk about him if he cannot chant sixteen rounds. He is not even a human. He is animal. [break]
Pancadravida: ...even he may be employed as factory worker or something.
Prabhupada: Well, if you take factory workers are better than animals, that is another thing.
Nitai: One point that you made a few years ago in Vrndavana was that this demoniac civilization, especially in U.S.A., keeps a man so much engaged, they make them work so hard, just to earn the simple necessities of life, that they don't have time to cultivate spiritual life.
Prabhupada: Well, if he likes, he can get time because he is not in the factory twenty-four hours. But if one... That is explained, apratihata. Krsna consciousness cannot be checked by any material condition. If anyone wants to become Krsna conscious, it is not checked. So there is nothing impediment, provided he wants to become. In any condition of life, sthane sthitah, if he simply hears about Krsna then everything is all right. He will gradually catch up everything and adjust things. But if he has no ears to hear about Krsna, then it is difficult. Therefore sravanam. The first thing is that. The first qualification -- he must be eager to hear about Krsna. Then everything will come. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam, arcanam vandanam dasyam [SB 7.5.23]. [break]
Pancadravida: ...such devotees that they do service, they may be very big, they attract so many people, they are successful, kirtana and everything, but we know they are not chanting japa. What can we do in that situation? Are we...
Prabhupada: Situation, he is doing some service. He is doing some service.
Pancadravida: Yes.
Prabhupada: So because on account of that service, if he could not, that can be excused. But not that practice should be taken as permanent business. The regulation is that if you cannot finish your chanting that day, then next day you should forget sleeping and eating and must finish it.
Pancadravida: Some persons we encounter they don't even chant at all, and yet we are in association with them, and they are...
Prabhupada: No, if you miss on account of busy-ness, then next day you must finish it. You should not go to sleep. You should not... Yes, that day you should forget all other business. First of all compensate this.
Satsvarupa: Some devotees have it as a chronic condition, though.
Prabhupada: Then he is animal.
Satsvarupa: But still, he's doing lots of good devotional service.
Pancadravida: He may even be manager.
Prabhupada: Then they will get some chance later on. What is that devotee, if you do not follow the regulative principles? The business is that if one day you cannot, but finish. The next day you must finish. Now, for eating, he is very eager, and for sleeping, he is very eager, and for finishing chanting, he has no eagerness. Then he is animal. It is simply an excuse. Yesterday you had no time? You were very busy? All right. Today you forget your sleeping and eating. Finish it. That is wanted. [break] And only for chanting, you have no time. This is not allowed. This is not allowed. This is cheating, that "I am so busy."
Pancadravida: Most of these devotees in Hyderabad, they are chanting twenty-five rounds a day or more.
Prabhupada: That's all right. If you can chant more, that is good. [break]
Pancadravida: ...must associate with them, that is difficult.
Prabhupada: But you do your business. You don't follow them. That's all. You remain perfect. There are many imperfects, admitting, but you try to remain perfect so that they may see you, your behavior, and they may follow you. If everyone is sincere in his activity, then where is the question? The society means if I am defective, I am seeing that you are doing nicely, so I will be ashamed. That is also teaching. Actually that should be the practice. If I cannot finish my sixteen rounds due to some business, then next day I must finish it. If you say that "Next day also, I am busy," then you should forego your eating and sleeping and finish it. That is the way. You are so busy, but you do not forget your eating and sleeping. That is cheating. If you are so busy that you forget your eating and sleeping, then I can consider that you are very busy. But you do not forget this portion. "Whenever there is opportunity, I sleep and eat. And I have no time for chanting" -- this is cheating. How long you can go on by cheating? You must finish it. Hare Krsna. Somebody, after initiation he promises, "Yes, I shall follow these rules and regulations. I shall chant sixteen rounds," before the fire, before the Deity, before the guru, and if he does not follow, then he is a cheater. What to speak of his becoming a Vaisnava, he is a cheater. He breaks all his promises. Therefore after seeing, observing a person is doing everything, then say second initiation, or then he should not be recommended for second initiation unless the president and the other authorities see that he is doing nicely, he is following. Otherwise he should not be recommended. If he is recommended, that is also another cheating. If you know that this person is not following the rules and regulation, then why should you recommend him? Then it is another cheating. Viddhi-bhakti must be followed; otherwise it becomes sahajiya. [break] ...Kerala?
Indian man (1): Yes.
Prabhupada: You said that one gentleman, his name is Adhyatma?
Indian man (1): He was blaspheming our society. It was a (indistinct)
Prabhupada: I can understand that he is not very favorable. But still, you said that we hate Hindi. You have said like that. Don't say like that because there may be one... Because preaching means we have to preach amongst the rascals but you do not become rascal. He may be... [break] "...Who will read Hindi? You do not... Who will read Hindi? You can read Hindi, that's all. But who will read outside Hindi? Therefore, Guru Maharaja..." This should have been the reply. "If there is good customers for Hindi reading, then we can write Hindi books. But nobody will read Hindi." That should have been the reply. Therefore we write in English. "Why Jawaharlal Nehru read his books in English? Why Dr. Radhakrishnan writes his books in English? He has not written a single book in Hindi. Why? Why he was president? Why he was prime minister? Why did you not criticize him?" That should have been replied, that "As soon as a book is written in English, it is for world reading. And if it is written in Hindi, who is going to read except a few people like you? Why still Indians, they are sending their children for education through English?" You know that? There are so many English medium school. Is it not? Yes. Why? Why they are anxious? So much agitation was made for studying Hindi, but then why India still, even in families they are talking in English? In Bombay they talk in English amongst family members. And any gentleman meets another gentleman -- he talks in English. Why it has not been stopped? So actually Hindi has no effect and if we take international rule, what is the use of Hindi? Nobody will like to... And even here, even here in India, who is reading Hindi? Nobody is reading Hindi. It is compulsory in every province, Hindi? Not compulsory. So?
Indian man (1): Not Hindi, also they are developing local languages, they are teaching English letters now. The latest, they send their childrens to the English medium schools.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Indian man (1): But these are also, they are definitely studying in local languages. Don't (indistinct) they are regulated. (indistinct)
Prabhupada: Just see. This is going on everywhere. There are so many private schools for teaching English.
Indian man (1): This is what I call cheating, to keep this.
Prabhupada: They are cheater.
Indian man (2): (Hindi) ...in English
Prabhupada: That is their local language.
Indian man (1): Even wordly, everything is in English in world also. But these peoples said, "Why the devotees don't...?"
Prabhupada: Now, I have earned my practical experience. I am traveling all over the world. Everywhere, if not all, some sections they understand English. Everywhere.
Indian man (1): English is common language.
Prabhupada: Yes. We cannot avoid English.
Pancadravida: Even we went on an engagement in Bengal to a movie theater. They were showing our slides. There they had one Russian movie. It was in English. Russian movie was in English.
Indian man (1): There are so many books Russians put out in English only. In India so many Russian books are there. They're publishing. All books are in English. They're using this language for their own purpose.
Prabhupada: Any book of engineering, medical, technical, they are all in English. And for writing those books in Hindi means he will have to manufacture some words which nobody will understand.
Indian man (2): English in the West is the international language.
Prabhupada: They are fanatics, those who are after Hindi, fanatics. Practical point of view, without English there is no exchange.
Indian man (2): He was blasting our society. That's why I let him be that.
Prabhupada: No, still, you should not say like that.
Indian Man (3): English, they speak. That's the language (indistinct) And all the people can read it. All the people can read it.
Prabhupada: We are making all over India members with these English books. Why do they not say, "No, no, no, I cannot accept English book." Why they are accepting English books? It is my fault that I have written in English or it is their fault? Why they are accepting? Everywhere we are making life members but why do they accept these English books? They could have refused, "No, no, no, I cannot accept English book." Why they are accepting? I know one boy. He is about forty-two years. But he was practically my first student. He is a very big scholar in Sanskrit. But because he does not know English, he is useless. He could not make any, prosper in any way. He is taken as half-educated. He was appointed as vice-chancellor of the Darbhana(?) Sanskrit University. Maybe it is only name. Anyway, now his teaching period is over. Now he is useless. He does not get any service. Although he is a very big Sanskrit scholar. The only defect, that he does not know English -- he does not get any responsible position.
Pancadravida: He does not want to learn?
Prabhupada: No. He was trying to learn but he could not learn it. If he is serious, he can learn, but he is not serious.
Indian man (1): If we learn English perfectly, the local priests will (indistinct) those others don't speak English anymore.
Prabhupada: No, local language is required.
Indian man (1): Suppose if we learn English, then we can preach in our local language.
Prabhupada: Yes, local language is required. No, Hindi also, you should learn, but... We can have publication in Hindi also. But when we speak of international organization, English must be there.
Pancadravida: [break] ...them into all the schools.
Prabhupada: Yes. School, college, library, enlightened gentlemen, businessmen, they have all accepted.
Pancadravida: This is how it would work. This is Aksayananda's work. He has been doing this for some months here now. He goes every day to all the different colleges and schools, and he speaks, and he shows them your books for their college libraries. He's been having a lot of programs like this. They always take the Bhagavad-gita and Krsna Books and Nectar of Devotion, like this.
Prabhupada: Best thing is that "Why your president, he did not write a single Hindi book? He has got so many. He is a famous philosopher. Indian religion, Indian philosophy, and Bhagavad-gita. Then... He has written so many books but not a single in Hindi."
Indian man (1): Dr. Radhakrishnan belongs to South India.
Prabhupada: Yes, he is from Madras.
Indian man (1): Yes, he doesn't know.
Prabhupada: No, he does not know. Sometimes, before my taking sannyasa, sometimes I used to see him. So once upon a time he asked me, "Swamiji, you are simply writing in English?" So I asked him, "What you are doing?" So he began to laugh. (end)

Protect Against Degradation

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: Yes. Engage them. maya... It is not actually maya's fault, this maya's business that all living entities who are within this material world, they have come to enjoy. Enjoy means sense gratification. So maya is kind enough to give them all facilities. That is maya's business. maya has a machine, these three qualities, and as I want to enjoy, so there are departmental arrangements, "Give him facilities like this." Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27].Satsvarupa: But the facility turns out to be slaps.
Prabhupada: Slaps... We will go on the street?
Mahamsa: It's not very... It's all right.
Prabhupada: Let us see. [break] Just like children, they are given some facilities. They must work according to that plan. Otherwise sometimes there is slap, "Huh, why you are doing like that?" like that. [break] ...your country. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke sva-dhih kalatra-bhaumya idya-dhih [SB 10.84.13]. Bhaumya means bhumi. Bhumi, the land, idya-dhih: "This is my duty: to serve my country, to serve my land." This is maya. The rascal, he is engaged to "Do your duty to your country," and what is the country? Suppose if I do my duty and I may be driven away from my country next life, because there is no guarantee that I will have to take my birth... Just like one astrologer has explained that Jawaharlal Nehru has become a dog in Scandinavia. (laughs) There is chance. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. You will have to change your body. Now, where it will be changed, how it will be changed, what kind of body you will get -- that is not in your hands. That is not in your hands. You cannot say, "Oh, I am Prime Minister. I must get such and such body." That is not going to be accepted. But these foolish rascal people, they do not understand it. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27]. I am acting under certain infection. So I am infecting, say, some venereal disease. So I must suffer for it.
Mahamsa: Mahatma Gandhi worked so hard for his country and his own countrymen shot him.
Prabhupada: Yes. Still, these fools, they do not know what is service, what is country, what is... They do not know this is maya. [break] By nature's mercy, they got this nice human form of body, civilized. There is sufficient food, supplied by nature. You eat and be Krsna conscious. Take advantage of the sastras, lessons left by Krsna and His devotees. Live peacefully, happily, and go back wherefrom you have come. But whole thing is spoiled by these misleaders. "Do your duty to your country." (laughs) What is that duty? I am working under the influence of material nature, and what is my duty? My only duty is to come to Krsna consciousness. That is my duty. [break] ...because we are prescribing so many duties, and there is no God. That's all. [break]
Aksayananda: You said that everyone could become a brahmana, in your lecture, last night. But at the same time there must always be the legs of society.
Prabhupada: Legs are already there. Everyone is now legs. So they can be promoted to become heads. What is the difficulty? Everyone is in the eighth class. Does it mean that he cannot pass MA examination? If he is trained up, he can pass M.A. exam...
Aksayananda: But as long as there is material world, there will always be sudras.
Prabhupada: They are all sudras. Not will be. All, everyone is sudras. This movement is to promote the sudras to the highest class, Vaisnava, more than brahmana. This is Krsna consciousness movement. Everyone is rascal, sudra. [break] ...sudras should be elevated, elevated, but when even a sudra is engaged in the service of the Lord, he becomes transcendental, above brahmana. [break]
Aksayananda: It said that eight people were shot in Aurangabad with student riots, and the police got their guns and they started to shoot all the people. The same thing is happening in Gaya. The students are protesting against this and that. It said that they were protesting against degradation.
Prabhupada: Degradation?
Aksayananda: Yes. That is supposed to be the reason for their rebellion. They are protesting against corruption and degradation.
Prabhupada: But the rascals, why they themselves do not, be not reformed? Protesting against degradation. Why you are degraded? What is that protest? You are degraded. You reform yourself. That they will not do. Protest against degradation. Are you not degraded? Are you pure? So what is the use of protesting? You reform yourself. They can protest in this way that our guardians, our government, they have degraded ourselves. But that's all right. But guardian is a fool, your father is a fool. But why you are remaining as a fool? That they will not an... If we say, "Now you come to us. We shall raise you from degradation," that they will not do. That they will not agree. Now go to them, all these students, that "You are thinking that you are degraded. So why you should be, mean dog...? Come on, we shall reform you. We shall give you the highest post, brahminical post. Give up these four principles." That they will not do. Will they do?
Aksayananda: No. One may come out of a thousand.
Prabhupada: Yes. They want to remain in degradation, and they will protest again. Therefore to save the degradation, this catur-varnyam must be established. That I... The ideal class. People will follow, "Oh, here is the ideal class." So we are trying to make an ideal class of Krsna conscious people. And if you treat yourself as degraded, then who will care for you? You should remain an ideal class. People will follow gradually.
Mahamsa: If a brahmana class is created, then automatically the ksatriyas and vaisyas and sudras will be changed.
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes. The ideal, if you be ideal class, gradually they will take your advice, what to do. Then immediately the whole degradation will be finished.
Satsvarupa: Why will they take advice? Will they actually be attracted to the virtues?
Prabhupada: Yes, naturally. Just like people come to see me. Similarly, everyone comes.
Aksayananda: Everyone is attracted to you, Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: Yes. So you should be such qualified that people will come to consult you, to take your advice, and... That is the way. [break] ...one after another. Just like if you are a qualified lawyer, when one has difficulty, he comes, consults you, what to do. If you are a qualified physician, then people will come to consult you. So you become qualified, ideal; people will come. Otherwise who will care for you? [break] ...principles. No illicit sex, no gambling, no meat-eating and chanting. These five things only, if you strictly remain on these principles, see how you are respectable. Immediately you'll be respected. Is it not?
Aksayananda: Everyone knows that it should be done.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Aksayananda: Everyone knows in their heart that these things are right. Before I came to the movement, when I read the Back to Godhead magazine, they are doing these things, I was not doing them all.
Prabhupada: No, we are making propaganda in USA. They are attracting attention of the people. Yes. They are saying nice.
Aksayananda: Whenever we see those four rules...
Prabhupada: These rascals, they cannot give up even smoking, ordinary thing. And they become leader.
Mahamsa: It is not very difficult to give up. If one is engaged in Krsna consciousness, it is not difficult to give up these four things.
Prabhupada: Not at all. Very easily, in one second. If you have taken shelter of Krsna, Krsna says, aham tvam sarva-papebhyo... [Bg. 18.66]. These are sinful activities. Immediately Krsna will help you, "All right." Immediately. Krsna said. Is He bluffing? If you sincerely take to Krsna's lotus feet, immediately the effect will be you give up all this nonsense. They don't believe in Krsna, they don't believe in Krsna's word; neither they will surrender; neither they will give up. So where is the reformation? They want to remain in degradation and protesting... This is maya. This is the called, praksepatmika sakti, to keep him in degradation, that "You rascal, you have come to enjoy material happiness. So I will keep you in this degradation and you suffer. I shall kick on your face." This is maya. So what is the result of this protest against degradation?
Aksayananda: They get shot. The police come and shoot them.
Prabhupada: That's all. And tax you and get fat salary. That's all. This is government. They will degrade you and take your money and enjoy themselves. That's all. [break] ...revolution in India. Yes. Because people are hungry. There is no food. A very great revolution. So long they were under Vedic culture, they were suffering. Suffering in this way-tolerating. Now that culture is gone. Now they will be violent. Just like in other countries. If you pinch somebody on and on, there will be a violent protest. In the beginning you may tolerate. But if you go on pinching, pinching, pinching, how long you will tolerate? This is India's condition. Britishers, when they were ruling, had some responsibility. Although they were exploiting, but they were arranging for sufficient food and other things. But these people are irresponsib..., simply personal. "Whatever money I can get, that's all." This is going on. All these so-called ministers, they come to the post for taking money, as much as possible. [break] It must have been belonging to some Nawab, Nizam. It is aristocratic building, not ordinary building. [break]
Mahamsa: ...it could be favorable for our movement? Because we can, people will be very much frustrated at that time?
Prabhupada: Well, people are now shameless, you see? They are being kicked in so many ways. We are giving the prescription, "Here is the remedy," but they are not taking to it. But they will take it. Some of them will take it, provided you remain also ideal. If you become also degraded, then who will take it? Ideal character, ideal behavior, ideal preaching. People will appreciate. [break] ...pure character or position, people will take, in any condition. There may be revolution or no revolution. They will take it. [break] ...that our movement is actually good. They will take in any condition. That standard we must maintain. Somebody... Yes, Balavanta, when he was speaking against smoking, one candidate -- he was important man -- he was smoking. Immediately he wanted to hide. (laughter) So immediate effect was there. He understood that "Yes, this is bad habit." So people will take it, any condition, provided you are ideal. Apani acari prabhu jiveri siksaya. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's movement. He teaches others by behaving Himself. "Example is better than precept." If you cannot rise early in the morning, then how can you ask others to rise early in the morning? What is the effect? There is no effect. We have got business early in the morning, to attend mangala arati. And if you sleep yourself and teach others, so who will take it? [ ...we have introduced. Very, very simple thing. But still, if he cannot... [break] ...(indistinct) Maharaja. He is, he admitted him, smarta pandita, but he cannot rise early in the morning. Never. And he is imitating the smarta panditas. You know that? Smarta, and one pot, and this and that and asana (laughing). And "I had some..., consult with some smarta pandita," and the real business, to rise early in the morning, he will never do. He will never do. Brahmana. Brahmana means he must rise early in the morning. What kind of brahmana? Oh, he is coming. (laughs) Early in the morning at half past seven. If he walks early in the morning, all his disease will be cured. That he will not do. After all, everyone can do after performing mangala arati, take a morning walk. Bathing. [break] How did you know we were here?
Pradyumna: I asked (indistinct)
Prabhupada: Yes. If you rise early and take a walk, all your ailments will be cured. [break] If a gentleman wants to walk early in the morning, he must have his dog friend.
Mahamsa: They have a saying that dog is man's best friend now. Instead of God being man's best friend, they have made it dog is man's best friend.
Prabhupada: Just like he is a dog. [break] ...strike. Simply strike, protest. Where is happiness? [break] ...unnecessary spending. Unnecessary spending, then why you have allowed opening cinema? One side advertisement, "Unnecessary spending," and the other side so many rascal things, so people will spend for that.
Aksayananda: But they will say, "You must have some time to relax."
Prabhupada: That is unnecessary. Everyone will say, "What I am spending unnecessarily that is my relax." [break] ...government officer will have a big bungalow and now there is act that "Others, if he has got a big bungalow like this bungalow, this is unnecessary." Now it is prepared to act(?). And for minister, it is relax, and for common man it is unnecessary. This is then... "Smoking for me, it is relax, and for you it is unnecessary." These rascals are preaching like that. If smoking is unnecessary, it is unnecessary for me and for you also. "No. For me it is relax." [break] Is that their advertisement? Save money?
Mahamsa: Yes.
Prabhupada: And as soon as you save, they will take income tax.
Mahamsa: They have a wealth tax. So if you save that means you have more wealth, and then they tax.
Prabhupada: And they will "relax" by drinking, "relax" minister. "You save money for our relaxation. That is our necessary. You don't spend money." And people are... Because they see that "If I save, it will be taken away. Let me spend lavishly." Yes. Just like we stayed there at Mr. Patel's house. There are three men only in the family: Mr. Patel, his son and his daughter-in-law. They have got eight cars, big, big cars, Rolls Royce. And about twenty servants. They know that "They will take it away. Better spend." Everyone is doing that. Because they know, "If I save, one day the government will take 98 per cent of my savings. Then why save? Better spend." They cannot give in religious institution. If they say they want to give something, no, that will not allowed. Yes. The whole idea is that "You save, and one day I shall take the whole money and we shall distribute amongst the ministers, Indira Gandhi and company. And we relax. We are working so hard, how to impose taxes upon you. So we must have relax." This is going on. Vicious society. [break] ...open. Let us open. (end)

If You Love God...Why Disobey

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: ...principles? What we should inform to the people in general?Pancadravida: I try to remember that Lord Caitanya, He informed that the purpose of all Vedic literatures is to acquaint people with their relationship which they have forgotten with God, to teach them how to engage themself in that relationship and to understand that the goal is to come to pure love of God. So when I speak I try to bring that into it also because we are actually speaking from sastra, so we should acquaint people with the principles of devotional service, tell them that they have forgotten God, that they must serve God and practically how they can do it.
Prabhupada: No, they will say that "We have not forgotten God. We go to church regularly." And the Mohammedans will say that "We go to mosque. So why we have forgotten God?"
Pancadravida: Going to church or mosque... When we are speaking to the people, we don't discourage that they change their religion or anything.
Prabhupada: No. You, your charge is that they have forgotten God. They will answer that "We have not forgotten God. We are going to church, we are going to our mosque. Why we have forgotten God?"
Pancadravida: Because they are not serving Him... [break] ...relationship. They are not actively serving Him. They are engaging themselves... We see practically that some people say they are theists...
Prabhupada: Then what is the meaning of service?
Pancadravida: Service means a relationship of serving out of love. So people are simply serving their stomach or...
Prabhupada: "So if I haven't got love, then why I am coming to church?"
Satsvarupa: Well, we're educating them what is God. They go to church, but they don't know. "What is your idea of God?" We ask them.
Prabhupada: "Whatever it may be, when I offer my prayers, I remember there is some God. I may not have clear idea. I have got my own conception of God." So what is the answer?
Satsvarupa: Well, there are symptoms if you... We don't discourage, as Pancadravida Maharaja says, but if you are following God, the best religion is that which develops love of God.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is answered. "If I haven't got love for God, then why I am coming to church?"
Pancadravida: If you have love for God, why you are coming to church?
Prabhupada: No. "Because I have got love for God, therefore I am coming to church. At that time I could have earned some money."
Pancadravida: But we're also teaching that this love, love is not just based on sentimentality. Love is also practical. Just like in this world, when there is relationship between man and woman, there is a practical exchange of love. It is not simply that love is only based on words. Also one is based on actions. We can judge how much a man is developing love by what his activities are.
Prabhupada: "So what you have found in me that you have concluded that I have no love for God. What you have seen in me?"
Pancadravida: I have not concluded that... When I speak with a person, I do not say, "I have concluded that you have no love of God."
Prabhupada: "You say. That you have charged, but on what account you say like that? What I have done?"
Nitai: Because you go to church only for one hour all week. The rest of the time is not spent in serving God.
Prabhupada: That may be. But that does not mean that I do not love God.
Satsvarupa: Well we don't criticize your love of God, but it can be increased. Krsna says in Bhagavad-gita always think of Him in whatever you do, during your work, during the week. We can teach you how to... You like to go to church? That shows you have some affection for God. We can teach you how, wherever you are, to think of Krsna.
Prabhupada: This is not proper answer.
Pancadravida: Then if you have love of God, then we are also spreading this consciousness of love of God all over the whole world to people who have not developed that love, then you should willingly engage yourself in supporting this work.
Prabhupada: "But we are also preaching." Mohammedans will say, "We preaching. We take also sword sometimes. If he does not believe in God, we cut his throat." The Christian missionaries, they will also say that "We are also going on all over the world. We have made so many big church."
Pancadravida: We have also got our work, and we show them...
Prabhupada: No, no. How do you say that you are better than him? If they are also doing, it may be difference of degrees, but we are also doing the same thing.
Pancadravida: If a person is having love of God, though, then his love is not simply confined to his own work. You say you are having love of God; we are also spreading this movement all over the world. So God is one...
Prabhupada: "No, no, we are also preaching Christianity all over the world. Our number of Christians is higher than your number of devotees. Our preaching work is better than yours."
Pancadravida: We ourselves are coming from Christian country, and we see that the entire society is so-called Christian, but...
Prabhupada: Do you mean to say entire society is after you?
Pancadravida: Pardon me?
Prabhupada: Can you prove that the entire society is after you only?
Pancadravida: We have got our society, this International Society for Krsna Consciousness.
Prabhupada: "That's all right, we have got our society. But we are also preaching, and we have got many countries, we have got devotees, Christians. Number of Christian is greater than your number of Vaisnava devotees."
Aksayananda: So we are only requesting you to chant Hare Krsna.
Prabhupada: That is a process only. You are requesting chant Hare Krsna; we are requesting prayer, 'Give us our daily bread.' That's all. That is also prayer. This is chanting and that is prayer. So there is no difference."
Aksayananda: But when we chant Hare Krsna we are praying to God, "Please let me serve you."
Prabhupada: That is already settled. We are also serving. We are preaching Christianity.
Pancadravida: So then the work we are doing, God is one, we are all serving God, then there should be no objection to assisting us in propagating this love of God all over the world. You are already saying...
Prabhupada: No, what is that love of God? That is already answered, that "We have also love of God."
Pancadravida: If you love someone, what are you doing? What is the aspect of your personal life?
Prabhupada: "No, what we are not doing? What you are doing?"
Pancadravida: Our engagement is twenty-four hours.
Prabhupada: "That may be. One may be engaged twenty-four hours or may be engaged for eight hours. That does not mean, you cannot say that I have no love for God." (pause)
Aksayananda: It has already been predicted in the sastra that this method of chanting the holy name of God will be accepted by everyone in the world.
Prabhupada: "That may be in your sastra. But what is the extra thing? That chanting, that's all right. We also go to the church and sing hymns also."
Satsvarupa: The fact is you do not know who God is. You do not know how God works. So...
Prabhupada: "No, I know in my own way."
Satsvarupa: That is not sufficient. You should develop, become educated.
Prabhupada: "But what is the use of it, having sufficiency? What is the distinction, that you have got sufficient love and therefore there is distin...?"
Satsvarupa: Ah, I may not have sufficient love, but one who does, he'll increase every way...
Prabhupada: "But then if you have no sufficient love, you cannot preach. Why you are preaching for me? You just show me example."
Aksayananda: You may be a very good example, but we see most of the Christians do not even follow the teachings. For example...
Prabhupada: Here you have come to the real point. Here he has come to the point. That is the point. If you love God, then why you disobey His order? That means you do not love God. That is the real point. [break] ...is that you love God for getting something from Him. But we do not love God for getting something. This is another point. So the first point is this. This is very important point, that if you love God, why you are becoming disobedient to the orders of God? That is the most important point.
Pancadravida: But if the man says, "I am Muslim; how you can say I am disobedient to the laws of God? I am following my own religion?"
Prabhupada: No, no, we shall come to the Muslims next. First of all let us talk with the Christians.
Satsvarupa: We are always arguing with them. They say they are following. They are allowed to kill animals.
Pancadravida: "I am accepting Christ. Therefore I am saved. I am following closely Christianity."
Prabhupada: No, no. If you love God, then why you are disobeying His order. That is my charge, first thing. God says, "Thou shalt not kill," but why you are killing? This is the charge I give to the Christians.
Satsvarupa: Yes, you always do that.
Prabhupada: Yes. There they are captured.
Pancadravida: But everybody is killing.
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna. [break]
Pancadravida: ...vegetables are also alive.
Prabhupada: No, everyone... We are not talking of everyone. We are talking of you. You love God. So why you are killing? No, killing... There is open declaration, "Thou shall not kill." So you are deliberately disobeying. Then where is the love?
Pancadravida: "But even if I become vegetarian, still, I will..."
Prabhupada: No, no, that is not questioned. God says that you shall not kill. But you are killing. Where is your love? You cannot argue with God. Then you do not love. You cannot put your argument, logic, "What God has said I must do." That is not...
Pancadravida: "But God did not mean us not to eat. We must eat."
Prabhupada: God did not... That means you have to eat only meat. You have nothing to eat?
Pancadravida: But if I eat a plant, it is also killing.
Prabhupada: That is your argument. But God says that "Thou shalt not kill." You cannot argue. This is the first theory... Suppose if I say something to you, order, you cannot argue. That is not obedience. Obedience means without argument accepted. That is obedience. That is love.
Satsvarupa: The other important point is that we love God not for getting some reward. You say that the other important thing is that this person claims to be pious, but he approaches God for material reward.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is business. That is not love. I go to somebody and flatter him to get something. Just like a shopkeeper does also like that. He flatters the customers in so many ways to sell goods so that he can make some profit. So there is no question of love.
Aksayananda: But that "I am following Jesus Christ and I am a vegetarian," so that's all right, isn't it?
Prabhupada: I am following Jesus Christ?
Aksayananda: That "I am a vegetarian. I do not eat meat. I don't kill. I do not kill."
Prabhupada: Oh, therefore I am a better Christian, better than you. Love... Therefore the Bhagavata is perfect. Bhagavata says that... Bhagavad-gita says... Krsna says that patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati [Bg. 9.26]. So we are obeying Krsna. We offer patram puspam phalam toyam. And we eat the remains of the foodstuff. Therefore we love. That is the proof. But you are not loving Jesus Christ because you are disobeying the order.
Pancadravida: How disobeying if the person says, "I am vegetarian. I do not kill. I am a Christian, but I am vegetarian, I do not kill animals?"
Prabhupada: Then you are all right. But they... Who put forward the argument that "You are also killing vegetable?" Then how can kill vegetable?
Nitai: In Bhagavad-gita Krsna... Just as you quoted.
Prabhupada: The thing is that we must eat something. And vegetables also have got life. The nature's way is that one living entity is eating another living entity. It may be animal or it may be vegetable. The question is the obedience to the order of God. So when Jesus Christ says that "Thou shalt not kill," it means bigger animals. Killing is applied, from dictionary, if I kill a man, if I kill an animal, then this word is used. So he meant like that. And that is very reasonable. Because I am eating another living entity, that does not I can eat another man. So therefore Krsna has specifically mentioned, patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati [Bg. 9.26]. After all, we have to eat. And if you take that all killing is the same, even by ordinary law, if I kill one tree, and if I kill one man, does it mean it is of the same degree? Even taking killing of plant, so there are comparative. But it is also necessity that we must eat something. So therefore here, perfect thing in the Bhagavad-gita, that He says that "You offer Me." "Offer Me" means "After My eating, you shall eat." Yajna-sistasinah santo mucyante sarva-kilbisaih. Even by killing vegetable, you are also as sinful as killing animal, but because we offer to Krsna, therefore we are not sinful. Krsna wants it. Just like Krsna wanted Arjuna to fight and kill the other party. Therefore Arjuna is not infected with the sin. So here Krsna is asking, "Give me this foodstuff," and Krsna knows that I will eat the remnants of the foodstuff. So I am not responsible. We have no very much study of the Muslim, but instead of criticizing others, better we shall preach our own cult. But if there is occasion when somebody attacks, then we should be prepared. But our positive business should be to inform people what is the nature of God, as they are stated in Bhagavad-gita and in Bhagavatam.
Pancadravida: When we run into those people... Sometimes we run into Muslims, Jains, Christians, and usually what we do is we approach them on the basis of our welfare work. Because we have got our work where we are feeding persons in Mayapura, we are doing different..., opening schools. So we approach them that God is also one. There is one God and we are doing work for bringing all the people to God. In Mayapura we are feeding so many Muslims every day.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is good preaching. But when there is argument, when somebody says, you should be prepared to argue with them. It stopped? We shall go another round?
Aksayananda: I think it has stopped.
Satsvarupa: No rain.
Pancadravida: [break] ...dressed in shiny saffron. He is dressed in black. He looked like nescience and you look like the sunshine, standing next to him. He is wearing all this black with a little bit of red trimming on it, looked like nightime. [break] ...I met a Christian, and he said "You have got your guru and you are following him. He teaches you by his example. We have got our pope. He is our example of what Christianity is. He is the head of Christian order, and he himself is eating meat. Now how you can say...?"
Prabhupada: Then how he can be pope?
Pancadravida: "But how you can say he is not the best Christian? He is the head of all the Christians."
Prabhupada: But that means you are foolish and pope is also foolish. If he does not follow the orders of Jesus Christ, then how he becomes a pope? Therefore you are foolish. You have elected some foolish, another foolish man as your pope. That should be the right answer, that "If he does not follow Christ, how he becomes pope?"
Pancadravida: He is not killing.
Prabhupada: Then why he is appointed as head? He must order. Otherwise if you are not following pope, then you are not Christian. He does not kill, then you should not kill. And why does he not order?
Pancadravida: He himself is eating meat. So it must be all right.
Prabhupada: Then how he is pope?
Pancadravida: But he is knowing what Christianity is the best. Therefore he is in charge. He says it is all right to eat meat.
Prabhupada: No, no, how... Then first of all how you can elect him as in charge? Then you are fool.
Pancadravida: All the popes for hundreds of years have all eaten meat.
Prabhupada: Then hundreds of years you are fool. Therefore you are intelligent? Does it mean?
Pancadravida: But when Jesus said, "Thou shalt not kill," he meant humans; he did not mean animals.
Prabhupada: That is your interpretation.
Aksayananda: But Jesus was a shepherd and there were many, many sheep. What did they do with all the sheep?
Prabhupada: They eat?
Pancadravida: They must.
Prabhupada: They must. That is your inference.
Pancadravida: What else...? In the middle of desert...? Babylon, Israel is all desert country. What will they do with sheep? They are not making wool coats.
Prabhupada: Then why he has said, "Thou shalt not kill"? Then hypocrisy. Then you reject Jesus complete. He is a hypocrite. Yes. That is the conclusion. How can you follow hypocrite? Huh? Is that all right? If Jesus Christ himself killed animals and he said, "Thou shalt not kill," then he is a hypocrite. Then he cannot preach. He is a hypocrite. You are bringing Christ for condemnation. But how a hypocrite can be the head or can be the religious man or can be...
Aksayananda: It is not that we are saying he is a hypocrite.
Prabhupada: He is proving.
Aksayananda: He himself, the Christian is saying that Jesus Christ is a hypocrite.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Aksayananda: So why is he following?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Pancadravida: They still eat the sheep.
Satsvarupa: The main thing they usually say is that kill means murder. That man at Bhaktivedanta Manor, that priest, he said the original Hebrew, the word means "murder." So this is an instruction to mankind not to murder, but it is not... But they have other places in the scripture where they point out that the animal is allowed for man to eat. So they just were showing us their scriptures.
Prabhupada: It is said, "It is murder."
Satsvarupa: Yes, that "Thou shalt not murder." That it has been changed to "kill."
Prabhupada: Originally it was murder?
Satsvarupa: That is what that priest said to you in Bhaktivedanta Manor.
Prabhupada: No, no, no, he may say. What was previously, we are not concerned. But you have left already this Jewish Old Testament. You have got New Testament. You are not Jewish. So why do you bring that Jewish for your defense? You have already rejected it.
Pancadravida: But they say we accept both Old and New Testament. The Christians do not say we only have New Testament. They say we accept the old and the new.
Prabhupada: Then why you have changed?
Pancadravida: Because the Old Testament never mentions Christ, but the New Testament is all about Christ.
Prabhupada: Then it is rejected. If you have changed the tenets of Old Testament, that means you have rejected.
Pancadravida: No, not changed. In Old Testament the messiah, he is predicted, but activities of the messiah, they are not given.
Prabhupada: The question is the Old Testament, you say that there was the word "murder." Why you have changed? You accept Old Testament or reject?
Satsvarupa: Accept the statement should be "murder."
Prabhupada: But why it is "kill"?
Pancadravida: Wrong translation.
Prabhupada: Wrong translation.
Pancadravida: Yes.
Prabhupada: :They are fools, all set of fools. Useless. See one thing and write one thing. Then you are not perfect. Bhrama pramada. You commit mistake. Therefore your instruction is useless, useless. Because you commit mistake, therefore your instruction is useless. And that actually they are doing. As it is suitable, they are changing the words of Bible. They are useless. Things which are changeable, that cannot be accepted as scripture. Scriptural injunction means you cannot change. Just like we accept the Vedic scripture but don't change it. That example I have given many times. Because Lord Buddha wanted to change Vedic literature, therefore he is rejected. Although Lord Buddha is so... We worship him as incarnation of..., but he was rejected. You cannot change. Immediately you are rejected. [break]
Pancadravida: ...Christians, they were arguing with me they said, "God has given us the pig to eat."
Prabhupada: It is said in the Bible?
Pancadravida: No.
Prabhupada: Then where is this nonsense? How he can say? Actually, Christians cannot eat any meat because the word is "Thou shalt not kill." [break]
Pancadravida: Christ Himself was distributing fish, to the hungry, to the poor. He gave out so much fish.
Prabhupada: That was not killing fish. That is my support.
Pancadravida: We do not kill the fish either. We simply purchase it in the supermarket.
Prabhupada: Yes. Directly, fish, as soon as taken from the water, he dies. And Christ... Then how can you support Christ that if he has done killing business himself and he instructs others not to kill?
Aksayananda: Does that mean you are calling Jesus Christ a hypocrite?
Prabhupada: Hypocrite.
Aksayananda: Who is calling him a hypocrite, us or you?
Prabhupada: You want to support your sinful activities by proving Christ as hypocrite. This is your business. You are such a Christian. And your love for Christ is such. [break] ...that we have to follow the instruction of the superior. Even if he acts something against the instruction, you should not follow it. You have to follow his words. You cannot imitate his action. That is real obedience. You should... If he has done something against his instruction, you should know that might have been some particular occasion he has done it, but we are not concerned with that. We are concerned with his order. That is obedience. He has not ordered me to do this thing. So my duty is what he has ordered to me. That is my only duty. What he has done in particular occasion, that is not my duty to see. Just like there is a Bengali verse,
yadyapi nityananda suri bari jaya
tathapi sei amara nityananda raya
That suri bari means wine shop where wine is distilled and sold. That is called suri bari. And those who are wine sellers, they are called suri. So I see that Nityananda is going to a wine shop. So if I say, "Oh, Nityananda is now spoiled. He is going to wine shop." No. We should not see that. We should know Nityananda is pure. If he is going to suri bari, wine shop, he has some business. But because he is going to the suri bari he is not polluted. I shall not follow him, "Because Nityananda has gone suri bari, therefore I shall go." Krsna danced with young girls, other's wives always. That does not mean I shall imitate that. What Krsna has said, we have to follow that. That's all. Krsna never said that "You also dance like me in rasa dance." Has He said anywhere? Then how can you do that? Whatever He does, He has got purpose. His work is all right. But I cannot imitate His work. The example is given that the sunshine is soaking urine. Can you imitate that, you drink urine? So tejiyasam na dosaya [SB 10.33.29]. If Christ has done something, he is Lord Jesus Christ, he might have done it for some purpose, but we cannot follow that. We have to follow what he has ordered. That's all. [break]
Pancadravida: ...argument being that Christ has said "Thou shalt not kill." That is one of ten commandments. Ten commandments are social codes for how the people are to live. Now, the people that are Christ's disciples, they are all fishermen. His whole community is fishermen and sheep herders. They are always... He is having fisherman community. So he did not mean for them to give up their engagement. They were all living as fishermen. He told them, "Thou shalt not kill." Therefore we can only conclude that Christ meant "Thou shalt not kill other human beings" because he was coming at a time, teaching principles how to live with each other...
Prabhupada: No, we don't allow to comment or interpret on the words of... That we cannot allow. You cannot interpret in that way, in your own logical... That is not allowed.
Pancadravida: "But we say that when Christ said, Thou shalt not kill, and you say it refers all living beings, we say that is your interpretation because Christ is coming to teach fishermen. He never told them to give up their occupation. They continued to live as fishermen. Continued to live as sheep herders. He knew that killing was going on. Therefore his statement, 'Thou shalt not kill,' must refer to human beings because he was living in the community. He was teaching by his example."
Prabhupada: But I can say, "Why not to the animals? You can eat fish only." Then I'll write book like that. Jesus Christ allowed the fishermen to fish, so then you can fish. Why you are killing cows? That will be my argument. If you are actually following Christ, all right, you can take fish, but why you are killing animals, and other animals? Why you are going that "Because Christ has allowed some fish killing, therefore everyone should be killed"? What is this nonsense? You follow strictly. All right, fish-killing.
Pancadravida: What is the difference between fish killing and goat killing?
Prabhupada: Then everyone will say what is the difference between animal killing and and man killing?
Pancadravida: There is big difference between animal killing and...
Prabhupada: Why big difference?
Pancadravida: If a man goes into the road he runs over a dog, there will not be so much punishment. But if a man goes into the road, he runs over...
Prabhupada: That you have made, your laws. You have made that, if you kill a man and if you kill an animal, that is not equal. That is your... But that does not mean when it is said, "Thou shalt not kill"... This is no argument.
Pancadravida: That law was made for some reason. Because human being and animal are not on equal levels. Human being has soul, but animal does not.
Prabhupada: Then you interpret in your own way. That is actually... (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: Actually, if we become successful then all these things will be finished. Yes. [break]Devotee: They are attracted by wonderful things such as Sai Baba. He is doing so many wonderful things. People...
Prabhupada: That is, means rascal. He does not see Krsna's wonderful. If you want to see wonderful things, why don't you see the more wonderful things? But they are foolish; they are captivated with small wonderful things. That means less intelligent. Just like small children, they will be amazed by seeing small wonderful things, but his father will not be. What is the amazement, wonderful thing, Sai Baba has done? If he is creator of gold, then why he is doing business of incense? You know that? He has a big incense business exactly like us. He can create gold? Why there is incense business? [break] Caitanya Mahaprabhu used to give to His mother some gold when there was need of money. "Mother, I got this gold. So you can utilize it." The mother would think that "We are poor men, we have no gold. Wherefrom this boy brings gold?" So he (she) was doubtful because he (she) was thinking, "My son is mad, sometimes crazy." So he (she) would go, "Is it real gold? Just see." Then. "Yes, it is real gold." "Hm, how He got it?" You see. [break] ...many yogis, they make such gold for meeting their expenditures. Yes. Still in India they know how to make gold from copper. Yes. The process is they will drink mercury at night, and in the morning they will urine on the copper coins. And then, after some hours, the copper coins taken and put into the fire, it becomes gold. And it is scientific that some molecules of mercury, if mixed with copper, it is gold. Gold is combination of mercury and copper. But the people cannot mix it. They have tried. That is called alchemist. They tried to mix it. Because they do not know the process, as soon as mercury is put into fire, it immediately goes out. You melt copper, and in hot copper, if you put mercury, it will not melt together. Immediately it will throw away. So some of the yogis, they know. They digest copper, er, mercury, and it comes in the form, urine. And then the copper is put there. There is an interaction, and then put into fire. It becomes gold.
Gargamuni: So we should start manufacturing.
Prabhupada: You first of all eat mercury then. (laughter) You'll be finished. [break] ...no scarcity. Why should we go to imitate the rascals? We have got enough gold. Krsna is supplying gold whenever we require. [break] ...artha-prayojanam. Whatever you need, Krsna will supply, if you actually remain dependent on Krsna. There are so many literatures of different groups, but who is selling so much? Forty thousand, fifty thousand daily? Unless Krsna is helping us. In the history no religion book have sold thirty thousand, forty thousand daily. There is no history. So why don't you see this wonderful thing? All the money that I have brought from USA, India, it is all book fund. Nobody has given. George has given. That is not in cash. And he gave that two lakhs. That was spent for Krsna Book. So wherefrom the cash is coming?
Gargamuni: Sales of books.
Prabhupada: That's all right. Because we have got substantial sale of books, we are free to get money. And it is unbelievable that religious books are sold thirty thousand, forty thousand, fifty thousand daily. There is no history.
Gargamuni: So that is a miracle.
Prabhupada: Is it not miracle?
Satsvarupa: Yes. Some of those devotees like Tripurari, a hundred big Bhagavatams. It's not a popular book.
Prabhupada: It is not popular actually. For the common man it is dry subject. And I have heard that after reading one book, somebody comes to purchase. "What is this, Bhagavata?" "We have got six." "All right, give me six volumes." He is not a devotee. Why he purchases all the six volumes of Bhagavatam? In London our Bhagavad-gita As It Is was sold in two months, thirty thousand copies. That is the report. Thirty thousand copies.
Yadubara: Even though they don't understand the subject matter, they purchase.
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes. [break] Bon Maharaja has written part of Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu. And he published it before my coming to foreign countries.
Gargamuni: Yes. He has not sold any.
Prabhupada: No, he has sold some, but still lying in the store. He published only one thousand copies. Our Nectar of Devotion, the translation of the same book, is selling like hotcakes. Yes. In the university, Temple University, they have made a textbook. And everywhere they like it, Nectar of Devotion. I think... What is our edition at the present moment? Fourth or Fifth edition. And we don't publish less than ten thousand copies. So we have to depend on Krsna sincerely. Serve Him, everything, what is required, that will come, some way or other. That is miracle. Why should we try to cheat others, that "I can manufacture gold"? This rascal, if he can manufacture gold, then why he is doing himself business? That is simply jugglery. Even the magicians, they can do. They create so much money. But he is a poor man. Why he remains poor? And everyone thinks of us, that we have got unlimited wealth. You know that?
Gargamuni: Yes. In Mayapura, when I bring over the karatalas, they are very heavy, two hundred sets of karatalas. So the boatmen say, "Sona, sona." They are thinking it is gold, the karatalas.
Prabhupada: Everyone... Even government... In the parliament the question was raised, "Wherefrom they get money fabulously?" These men, in our country, they may be fools. In your country also, Los Angeles, I mean, neighboring storekeepers, they are wonderful, that "These people do not work and they have got so many cars and live so nicely?" (laughing) They inquire that "How do we get all these things?" They actually see that they are not ordinary working. They have no working or bank balance or business. Still, they have got so many cars and they eat nicely and they maintain such a nice house. And six, seven house they have purchasing. The realtors, they also know in America that we are very rich men. As soon as there is some property, they offer, because they know that we are very rich men. Because we have purchased some properties, so all the realtors, they have taken it for granted that we have got immense money. Here also, the members are thinking like that, that "Swamiji has got immense money."
Mahamsa: Yes. And he will send when we want.
Prabhupada: He will pay. You can tell them that "Not a single farthing here. He can spend elsewhere. If you don't pay for the temple, then we shall go on like this. But as he has promised one lakh of rupees, that he will pay. That's all." Others, you have to collect here. That one lakh is promised. That will be paid.
Mahamsa: Otherwise we can go on like this. This is very nice. So many people are coming...
Prabhupada: That's all right. In Bombay also, we can go without Deity or... Things are going on. There is no hindrance. Our members are coming. They are becoming members. You see? There is no difficulty. [break] You know the parliamentary question?
Gargamuni: Yes.
Prabhupada: Parliament questioned that "These Americans, they are supposed to be..." What is that? "CIA. CIA." Is there any information to the government? "Besides that, they have got fabulous money. They are spending. Wherefrom they get the money? And if they are CIA, then what steps the government is going to step, take against them?" So the reply was three. First reply was "The government has no information that they are CIA people. Therefore the third question doesn't require to be answered, what steps? And so far their fabulous money, it is understood they collect by selling their literature and public contribution." Yes. Home member replied like this.
Mahamsa: This was in the papers also?
Prabhupada: Oh yes. [break] Mirzapur, near Allahabad?
Gargamuni: Yes, in UP.
Prabhupada: Oh, when I was businessman.
Gargamuni: Some man has invited us there for kirtana program. He wants to donate some building there.
Prabhupada: Oh, that's nice. We get a nice place, on the Ganges side. If he donates, it will be very sanitary (salutary?) place.
Gargamuni: He wants to invite us in October.
Prabhupada: Mirzapur is rich people. They have got carpet industry. Mirzapur carpet is very famous. They manufacture and sell big, nice carpets. Just like Persian carpets. So similarly, Mirzapur carpet. Besides that, they have got many other businesses. So it is on the Ganges side and the healthy quarter also. [break] ...still, he is the biggest practitioner in Allahabad. He has offered his house. In old days he constructed it for four lakhs.
Gargamuni: Allahabad is an important place?
Prabhupada: Oh yes, Allahabad, very important. The UP high-court is there. Therefore all enlightened... University is there. All educated men of UP are in Allahabad. This Jawaharlal Nehru, Motilal Nehru, they were Allahabad men. Sarte(?) Bahadur Satru(?), big, big, well-known men, they are all... Pandita Madana Mohana Mahalabdha. All big, big politicians, they were Allahabad men. [break] ...times to print the books here. No action was taken. In the last five years, everyone tried and there was no result. Otherwise we can print all the books here.
Gargamuni: No, but the quality is better.
Prabhupada: Quality is better, but it will be cheaper. It doesn't matter. But to get books there, it takes so much time and the book department is not being managed nicely. But if we print here, the all problems will be solved. Here that gentleman, he has got press. Why not let him print? Yes. Why don't you call him immediately? If he can print. We can reprint all the books here.
Mahamsa: But the quality will not be half as good.
Gargamuni: There is now a paper shortage in India, very acute.
Prabhupada: Well, we can get paper from foreign countries. That will be not difficult.
Mahamsa: Oh. If we can get paper from foreign countries, then the printing results can be very good, because the printing is not bad. It's the paper which is very bad.
Tejiyas: Still, at the same, time everybody buys Gita Press books, even though the quality is bad.
Prabhupada: The quality is third-class.
Tejiyas: Everyone is buying all over India Gita Press.
Prabhupada: Because the supply is cheap.
Gargamuni: Well, it's in Hindi also. We have to print in Hindi.
Prabhupada: Well, first of all supply the English then, we... [break] ...tried to sell her place for fifty lakhs of rupees. She thinks that I am so rich man.
Mahamsa: Which press?
Devotee: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan?
Prabhupada: Associated Press, something like that. Bombay's first-class press. [break] ...They are not coming to us.
Satsvarupa: [break] ...but they would rather be non-devotees than work all day. They can say they are free.
Prabhupada: Yes. I offered that, that "What is this two thousand, 2,500 per month? Oh we can earn at any moment two thousand. So you become devotee; I excuse you of rent." They are not agreeing. [break] ...like an ass simply for sense gratification. Therefore it is warned in the Bhagavatam, nayam deho deha-bhajam nrloke kastan kaman arhati [SB 5.5.1]. [break] ...to respect the Vaisnava, to water tulasi, and this asvattha tree. These are bhakti items.
Nitai: Jaya, Srila Prabhupada. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: I am sitting in this room and if by force you drive me away, I shall go to another room. Because I'll have another room. But because you have forcibly driven me away you are criminal. Similarly, a living entity is ordained to live in a certain body for a certain period. If you kill, that is the interference with his staying there. You are criminal.Indian man: Yes, that is true.
Prabhupada: The soul is never killed. Never killed. But because you have forcibly driven away from that body, you become criminal. That is the philosophy.
Indian man: Yes. Now, assuming...
Prabhupada: So you cannot do that.
Indian man: Assuming that, everyone...
Prabhupada: Not assuming. This is the fact. (laughter)
Indian man: No, assuming this end. I am putting a question. Every man who took part in the Kuruksetra war, assuming that they are to be killed, they are destined to be killed. Then when they are killed, then Krsna's argument is the soul, the body perishes but the soul is eternal.
Prabhupada: Soul is eternal...
Indian man: ...the soul. How you are reconciling it if you say that the... I mean what a man is different from Krsna. Or atma is different from Paramatma. If you say that, then how do you say that atma is eternal? And what is the fate of the atma?
Prabhupada: No, atma is eternal. That is said, nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). Why don't you understand? Atma is eternal, God is eternal. But the difference is, next line, eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman. That one atma, God, He is maintaining others, and the others are being maintained. So how you can make equal the maintainer and the maintained? First of all, try to understand.
Indian man: The question is, even if you take it, advaita philosophy also there is a, the atma has to go and merge with the Paramatma, but they didn't say that they're equal. I don't think even the advaita philosophy also...
Prabhupada: How they can be equal?
Indian man: They cannot be, cannot be.
Prabhupada: Cannot be, yes. But they say equal.
Indian man: No. They don't say that equal.
Prabhupada: They say like that.
Indian Devotee: The Barishus(?) recently said that.
Indian man: Don't take it from one sentence and try to enlarge it. Take it in the context.
Indian Devotee: They always say this.
Prabhupada: I do not hear. You hear, he hears. If he says something else... That... This is therefore Caitanya's philosophy is acintya-bhedabheda, that as atma, they're equal. Atma. But one is Paramatma, because He is maintainer. Therefore...
Indian man: Yes. All the creation, the world. It is one way out of that Paramatma.
Prabhupada: Paramatma. So therefore Paramatma is the Supreme, and he is subordinate. So how the Supreme and subordinate can be equal?
Indian man: No, they can never be equal. Never be equal and never and... No philosophy, even any branch of philosophy does not say that a human being is equal to....
Prabhupada: No, their philosophy is, as you say, that this subordinate atma has forgotten that he is Paramatma.
Indian man (2): Yes, it is a main point. The seeker has forgotten that he is the sought.
Indian man: He has forgotten means simply the potential that you have within you, you have to realize it and come closer to the Paramatma. That is what it means...
Prabhupada: If you have got the potency to become Paramatma, then how you became atma?
Indian man: The potential to come near to Paramatma.
Prabhupada: Near, that is one thing. You are near to me. That means we are not equal. You are a separate person, I am a separate person.
Indian man: But even what has been told by him, he is Veda, Vedanti, anybody, he doesn't come to atma is going to Paramatma. He never says that. That mathematic equation...
Indian man (2): They say that the atma has forgotten. They say that atma has come into the clutches of the maya. When you get rid of the maya you become Paramatma.
Indian man: That is not... You don't become Paramatma. You become Paramatma means that... You don't understand Paramatma. Paramatma is the Supreme, Supreme soul. How can you become...
Prabhupada: Then you have to accept Paramatma and atma different.
Indian man: Different, that is true.
Prabhupada: Then dvaita-vada. Where is advaita?
Indian man: Even dvaita does not, something different from advaitam. In this particular fundamental. But even advaitam does not say that atma is equal to Paramatma. He never says that. You have maya. Maya will be field to you and that you get rid of that maya and you try to elevate your soul to the atma. And you come, go to the Paramatma.
Prabhupada: That is the beginning of spiritual lesson. Because that is the beginning of Bhagavad-gita. Everyone of us, we are identifying with this body. Just like if somebody asks what you are, "I am Mr. such and such, I am Indian, I am this, I am that." He is giving identification of the body. But that he is not. He's not this body. That is self-realization. That is the beginning of Bhagavad-gita, dehino 'smin yatha dehe [Bg. 2.13] -- two things -- deha, this body, and asmin dehe, there is dehinah, the owner of the body. That is the beginning of spiritual education. Because generally almost 99.9% people, they are thinking that I am this body.
Indian man: Well, that is true, that is...
Prabhupada: So that is another thing.
Indian man: That attachment to the...
Prabhupada: Yes. That attachment or no attachment, he is different from the body. That is the first lesson of spiritual education, that one has to understand that he is not the body. That is Brahman realization.
Indian man: No, after having realized that, we have to (indistinct) ourselves.
Prabhupada: Now that individual soul and the Supreme Soul, Paramatma, they are also different. That is described in the Bhagavad-gita in the Second Chapter Krsna says, "My dear Arjuna, both you, Me, and all these persons who are assembled here, we existed in the past, and we are existing now, and we shall continue to exist." So when they become one? Past, present and future. As they were different persons in the past, they are different persons now and they will continue to remain different persons in the future. So when they become one?
Indian man: Now we take it, small particles of water makes an ocean.
Prabhupada: That cannot be. Here Krsna says that we shall remain like this in the future.
Indian man: We can't get new to be...
Prabhupada: No, there is no amalgamation. It is clearly stated.
Indian man: Even a drop of water, when you take it from the glass and put it on this one. Another drop of water will come and when you put it in medicine won't come in water. Like that, atma, will it not merge with the Paramatma?
Prabhupada: That water is matter, that is not spirit. But we are talking of spirit. You cannot bring matter. No, that analogy cannot be, because similarity. The water is different, matter. And you are talking of spirit souls. Here it is stated that the spirit soul individually, they'll never amalgamate. Acchedyo 'yam. They cannot be separated...
Indian man: Then what is the aim of bhakti if you are not going to merge with Paramatma?
Prabhupada: Bhakti... You try... You read carefully. Because you do not read, therefore... Nitya-yukta upasate. Nitya-yukta upasate. When they come to the point of nitya, there also the upasana is there. One nitya is worshiping the other nitya. That is nitya-yukta upasate.
Indian man: Upasana... Upasana means...
Prabhupada: Upasana means upasaka, upasana and upasita. Three things. As soon as you bring upasana, there must be one person who is offering upasana and there is a process of upasana and the other person accepting upasana.
Indian man (2): Then we're assuming that we're, actually the idea of suddha-bhakti is...
Prabhupada: Bhakti means that. Nitya-yukta upasana. Upasana continues. Here they're upasana. Here the devotees offering worship to the Deity, it is upasana. And after being perfect, that upasana will continue. It will never stop.
Indian man (2): It will never stop, that's the fact. That is that a man...
Prabhupada: But Mayavadi philosophy is that you offer upasana now and when you are perfect you become one.
Indian man (2): Not one. I mean you merge with one. Not you become one. You merge with one.
Prabhupada: Then there is no advaita-vada. There is dvaita-vada. Two. There is no advaita-vada. If you accept that you remain different, then there is no advaita.
Indian man (2): We don't dare do you see, accha, at a particular stage you like to merge with Him?
Prabhupada: Meeting, I am meeting you. That does not mean we have become one. You are meeting me, I am meeting you. So we are different.
Indian man (2): What is ultimate object of that bhakti?
Prabhupada: Ultimate object is you are offering this flower -- this is bhakti. But you are different than me.
Indian man (2): That's all right. That is all right. That bhakti, you can call it love, you can call it various things. Bhakti means surrender.
Prabhupada: Bhakti means the process by which Bhagavan and bhakta interact. That is bhakti.
Indian man (2): That's all? He gains with that interaction?
Prabhupada: Interaction. That does not mean bhakta and Bhagavan become equal.
Indian man (2): Bhakta and Bhagavan may not be equal, but even the bhakti-marga and we say the Bhagavan Himself declares that "My bhakta is more superior to Me."
Prabhupada: That's all right. You say whatever you say, they remain two-different.
Indian man (2): They may remain two...
Prabhupada: Then that is not advaita-vada. That is dvaita-vada. Two, two, not one. That is dvaita-vada. That is the point.
Indian man: You mean to say eternally there is a soul and... This atma and Paramatma will remain separate?
Prabhupada: Yes. Therefore the... Therefore it is said: nitya-yukta upasate. Therefore the word is there, nitya-yukta. Nitya means everlasting.
Indian man: Everlasting. You remain separate.
Prabhupada: Separate. And that is a fact.
Devotee: Mamaivamso jiva-loke jiva-bhutah sanatanah [Bg. 15.7].
Prabhupada: There are so many things. But here it is said nitya-yukta upasate. Even they come to the platform of nitya, where there is no birth and death. That is nitya. Nityah sasvato 'yam na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. Even that platform, Bhagavan remains different than the devotee who worships.
Indian man (2): Eternally?
Prabhupada: Eternally. That is nitya-yukta upasate. There is no oneness. Otherwise why it is nitya-yukta upasate? Nityo nityanam. The nityanam, plural number, and nitya, Bhagavan. So nitya-yukta upasate.
Indian man: If you take the kevala-bhaktas, if you take the life of a bhakta...
Prabhupada: If you take logic, it is stated there in the Bhagavad-gita.
Indian man: If you take bhakta-vidya where so many sayings like Chakubhai and Namdev and all these people. If you take it... They had, they observed bhakti-marga from the beginning, that is, they considered Krsna...
Prabhupada: No, they have considered that the bhakti-marga is a means to become one.
Indian man: Means to become one. That's exactly what I mean.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is their version. But that is not the version of Bhagavad-gita.
Indian man: Yes, it's the only way. Bhakti-marga is only marga. It is only way to become one.
Prabhupada: No. They never become one. Therefore nitya-yukta upasate.
Indian man: Then why should we say in our...?
Prabhupada: You can say anything, but that is not accepted. We have to accept Krsna's statement. You can say anything.
Indian man: Sir, I am not saying. That is what I am taught.
Prabhupada: At least, you are saying now. So, then which one you will take? As you are taught or as Krsna said it?
Indian man: Merge with the Lord, Mirabhai, merge with the Lord, and Chakubhai, merge with the Lord.
Prabhupada: You bring thousands of examples.
Indian man: Then what is that merging?
Prabhupada: No, no. You bring thousands of examples, but whether we have to accept them or Krsna?
Indian man: I mean the doubt I am having, Gita, I mean...
Prabhupada: Then you, you now you just become out of doubt. That... Just like Krsna says in the Seventh Chapter, mayy asakta-manah partha yogam yunjan mad-asrayah asamsayam. Here is asamsayam. No doubt. Why you are in doubt? You do not accept Krsna. You accept somebody else.
Indian man: Not a question of accepting. We are all ignorant people in the field of...
Prabhupada: Therefore you are in doubt.
Indian man: We are, we have...
Prabhupada: No. Therefore you are in doubt. If you want to be doubtless, then you accept Krsna. Mayy asakta-manah partha yogam yunjan mad-asrayah. Asrayah. Not that equal footing. Mad-asrayah. Asamsayam samagram mam yatha jnasyasi tac chrnu [Bg. 7.1]. So you have to accept Krsna. If you become, if you want to become doubtless. Otherwise, you'll be put into doubt. Here it is said asamsayam, "without any doubt." That is the process. And if you want to remain in doubt, you continue. You accept this man, that man, that man, that man, that man. That is your business. But if you want to be doubtless, then you have to accept Krsna.
Indian man: So we say in the bhakti-marga for eternally the Paramatma and atma will remain separate, separate entities.
Prabhupada: And that is always. You cannot become one with Him.
Indian man: Then in what levels the man got to remain in a separate entity? Always in the same bhakta?
Prabhupada: Nitya-yukta upasate. The one is worshipable, another is worshiper. That's all. Nitya-yukta upasate. Upasate means the worshipable is there and the worshiper is there. Then the question of upasana. If they become one then where is upasana?
Indian man: Yes, that's exactly what I'm telling. At one stage...
Prabhupada: But that is not the fact. Here it is said upasate. Upasate means he worships. So if he loses his existence, then where is worship?
Indian man: No. Atman's got to go on practicing and try to become pure and purer and purer.
Prabhupada: Without being pure you cannot go there. There is no question of upasana.
yesam tv anta-gatam papam
jananam punya-karmanam
te dvandva-moha-nirmukta
bhajante mam drdha-vratah
 [Bg. 7.28]
Unless you are completely free from all sinful reaction, there is no upasana. That is practice. That is practice. Just like neophyte, one is practicing. Just like one student is practicing. That is sa bhakta prakrta smrta.(?) This is material. But when you are paka, practiced, then you go to the nitya-dhama. And your business is the same. Here it is practice and there it is permanent. That's all. Nitya-yukta upasate. The upasana continues.
Indian man: Then our object is to get rid of the birth. Birth and death. That we want to be eternal. From there you want to get rid of your birth and death. That is birth and death.
Prabhupada: Birth and death you stop as soon as you give up this material body. Material body, the birth question comes of the material body. And death also material body. Therefore it is clearly said in the Bhagavad-gita, na jayate na mriyate va.
Indian man: Yes, you are trying to do sadhanas to see what...
Prabhupada: First of all, understand this, that the soul is never born, never dies. But we are seeing birth and death. What is that birth and death? It is of the body. But you are different from the body.
Indian man: Yes, I am different. My soul is different, the atma different from the body. That is the conclusion.
Prabhupada: Birth and death applies to the body. Not to the soul.
Indian man: Yes. That, your karmas, you enjoy and suffer according to your karma.
Prabhupada: That is body, all body.
Indian man: That is body. How long you are going to do that?
Prabhupada: So long you are not a devotee.
Indian man: I mean even if I am a devotee, I go on doing some sins...
Prabhupada: You become devotee, then immediately transfer to the nitya-yukta upasate.
Indian man: Yes, I become a devotee, a true devotee...
Prabhupada: When you become a perfect devotee then you are transferred to the eternal world and your engagement is upasana eternally.
Indian man: The eternal world. What is that eternal world?
Prabhupada: That you do not know? You read, study? Have you studied Bhagavad-gita? Do you know that there is an eternal world? There is an eternal world? Do you know that?
Indian man: Our sastras say eternal world...
Prabhupada: Then why do you...?
Indian man: Man is eternal world by going and enjoying there in moksa there.
Prabhupada: So that is moksa. When you go to the eternal world, that is moksa. That is moksa.
Indian man: Do you separate the eternal world from the Paramatma? It is something, a world like our material world that we have got, physical world that we have got, is going to be out of, the eternal world?
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes. Paras tasmat tu bhavo 'nyo 'vyakto 'vyaktat sanatanah [Bg. 8.20]. This word is used, sanatana. Sanatana means eternal. There is another world. Paras tasmat tu bhavo 'nyo 'vyakto 'vyaktat sanatanah [Bg. 8.20]. Find out this verse. Everything is there.
Hari-sauri: We have to start packing up now. It's quarter past six. We have to leave in ten minutes.
Prabhupada: So now we have to stop. We have to leave. You just refer that verse.
Vasughosa:
paras tasmat tu bhavo 'nyo
'vyakto 'vyaktat sanatanah
yah sa sarvesu bhutesu
nasyatsu na vinasyati
 [Bg. 8.20]
Prabhupada: Na vinasyati. The material world will be finished and that will remain.
Vasughosa: "Yet there is another nature which is eternal and is transcendental to this manifested and unmanifested matter. It is supreme and is never annihilated. When all in this world is annihilated, that part remains as it is."
Prabhupada: That is sanatana.
Vasughosa: "Krsna's superior spiritual energy is transcendental and eternal. It is beyond all the changes of material nature, which is manifest and annihilated during the days and nights of Brahma. Krsna's superior energy is completely opposite in quality to material nature. Superior and inferior nature are explained in the Seventh Chapter." And the next verse?
Prabhupada: No, that's all right. There is an eternal world, sanatana. That is never annihilated. So when you go to that sanatana-dhama, God is there, sanatana, and there you live eternally and go on rendering service to God. That is (indistinct). There is no question of oneness. The variety is there, but there the varieties are eternal, here the varieties are temporary. That is difference. Everything is there. So thank you very much.
Devotee: Hare Krsna.
Devotee: Jaya Srila Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna. (end)
