Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Ali: I'm amazed that... When someone tastes something, a nice fruit, something pleasant, he remembers, appreciates that, even in material world. How could someone see God and come from a source as powerful and lovable as that and then forget? How could he forget so easily and become so badly attached to this materialism? Why is it that we are so far? I know it's in due course to my actions.Prabhupada: That tendency is here. Because we are very small fragment of spiritual identity, that tendency is there. The example is given, just like fire and spark of the fire. The fire and the spark, the spark is very small, but it is fire. And the big fire, together they look very beautiful. With the fire, when the sparks come-sput sput -- so many sparks, it looks very beautiful. But the sparks sometimes fall down from the original fire. Then it is no more fire. It is fire, but it's extinguished. The illumination is over. So we are small particles of God. God is big fire; we are small particles of God. So we are playing with the big fire very nice, but there is chance of falling down. That chance is there. The big fire does not fall. The big fire is always blazing. But the small fire, although it is possessing the same quality of fire, it may fall down. So we are small particle, very, very small, atomic portion God. Therefore we have got the tendency to be separated from the big fire, and then we begin our material body. Just like another crude example, just like a very rich man's son, he's enjoying life. Sometimes he thinks, "Why not independently live? Why dependent of father?" He goes out and he becomes a hippie. There are many examples. He was living very comfortably, rich man's son, but he left the house of his father and became a hippie. There are many practical examples. Why does he do so? I have seen in Allahabad one big lawyer, very famous lawyer, Ferolal Bannerji. He had two sons. One son became a good barrister like him, and another son became a car-wala, driving a car. The reason was that this son, a car-wala, he fell in love with a low-class woman, and he preferred to remain a car-wala.
Hari-sauri: What is that?
Prabhupada: Low-class woman. So she was living in a cottage, hut, cottage. So out of love he also preferred that "I shall live with her, and I shall drive a car." So that is independence. He preferred. So that discrimination preference is there always. You can prefer a low-grade life out of your discretion. Nobody can check you. And by cultivation of knowledge, you can become a big man. The two tendencies are there. There is no stereotyped idea. Otherwise, he has no independence. Who was speaking of that owl? There is an animal, owl. He doesn't like to remain in the sunlight. So that is also an animal. He is also eating, sleeping, mating, but he doesn't like the sunlight. What can you do? So God has given him all facility to remain as an owl, in darkness. That is God's kindness.
Atreya Rsi: So we can fall as far as we want.
Prabhupada: Fall or rise also. Why do you say fall? You can rise to the highest platform from the fallen condition. That is Krsna consciousness movement. That you are in a fallen condition, come to the highest platform and talk with God, play with God, dance with God. That is our opportunity. Now it is up to you to take it or not to take it. That is up to you. But our propaganda is this, tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9]. You simply try to understand Krsna. Then janma karma ca me divyam evam yo vetti tattvatah tyaktva deham [Bg. 4.9] -- this is our propaganda. We are trying to induce people to understand Krsna. Then his life is successful. But if you don't try to understand, that is your business. But we are offering that here is a movement, you try to understand Krsna. What is the wrong there? But if you don't like, who can force you? We are going country to country, door to door, town to town. What is our business? We are simply requesting that "You try to understand Krsna." And Krsna says, "As soon as you understand Me, you come to Me." Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti [Bg. 4.9]. Now it is up to you. If you take theoretically, that "If by understanding Krsna I can go to the eternal, blissful spiritual life," why not try it? And if you inquire that, "All right, it is very good proposal. By going back to Krsna, everything is solved. Yes, I'll go. So what is the method?" Then if I say, "Chant Hare Krsna," where is the difficulty? Why you are so much determined not to do anything to go back to home, back to Godhead? That is your misfortune. If it is so easy, and it is the means of solving all the problems, why not try it? "All right, let me try in this life." Why don't you do it? It is not a very difficult task. If you don't do it, then you are misfortunate. Therefore Caitanya, kono bhagyavan jiva. This is the process to be adopted by the some fortunate persons. But they do not want to become fortunate. They want to remain unfortunate. That is the difficulty.
Ali: So obviously this ignorance follows, even when we leave this body.
Prabhupada: You leave this body, you accept another body. Tatha dehantara praptir. Just like you have already accepted. When you were a child, this body was not there.
Ali: Does this happen instantly?
Prabhupada: Not instantly. I mean to say you have changed your body. Similarly, after giving up this body, you'll change to another body. That's a fact.
Ali: And between those gaps, we are sleeping.
Prabhupada: There is no gap. The nature's law... It is said that just like you are walking, step by step, like this, so when you fix up this step, then you take away this step.
Hari-sauri: Example of a caterpillar, how it moves from one leaf to another.
Prabhupada: Similarly, when you by nature's law when it is fixed up, you have to accept this body, then you give up this body, and immediately enter into the womb of the mother to prepare another similar body like the mother.
Ali: During this transformation, are we still ignorant? During this transformation from body to body.
Prabhupada: No, he's not ignorant. This body, next body is achieved according to the consciousness. At the time of, if you are thinking of something to which you are very much attached, then you get that similar body. If you are thinking of your pet dog, then you get the dog's body. And if you are thinking of Krsna, God, then you'll get the body like Krsna. That will be decided at the time of your death. Because at the time of death you'll be absorbed with thinking which you have done throughout the whole life. Sada tad-bhava-bhavitah [Bg. 8.6]. Just like the whole day you are working with some business, at night also dreaming that, subtle body. So you have to train up yourself within this life how to think of Krsna. Then there is chance of thinking of Krsna at the time of death and go back to home. It is not difficult. Very easy.
Ali: So the ultimate goal is not to come back.
Prabhupada: No, what is the use of coming here to suffer? Who is happy here? Can you find out anybody who is happy here?
Ali: Not that I've seen.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Hari-sauri: Not that he has seen. He's not seen anyone.
Prabhupada: Nobody. Do you think your king, Shah, is also happy? No. His sons, daughter, they are happy? No. He is also anxious how to keep his position, exalted position, he has to makes many plans, satisfy so many ministers, so many. He is also full of anxiety. And a small bird eating some grain here, he's attracted for the grain, but he's looking this way, "Oh, here is a man, here is man, he may not do some harm to me." So everyone is full of anxiety. Nobody can be free from anxiety. That is not possible. Sada samudvigna dhiyam asad-grahat [SB 7.5.5]. Because we have adopted this material life, asad, our mind should always be full of anxiety. Nobody can be free from anxiety. That is not possible. Sada samudvigna dhiyam asad-grahat. Because we have accepted this temporary body, we have to be full of anxiety. This is law of nature. And if we act in this life to create another material body, then our all activities are spoiled. Parabhavas tavad abodha-jato yavan na jijnasata atma-tattvam. He did not ask about the constitutional position of himself, he simply engaged himself in dog's place(?). Then whatever activities he has done, it is simply defeat. Next body what he's going to get he does not know. If you become a minister in this life and next life you become a dog, then what is the benefit? Can anyone challenge this? "No, no, I'm not going to become a dog." Nobody can say. You are going to change the body -- tatha dehantara praptir -- now what kind of body you'll get, that will depend on nature, not on yourself. If you go to a tailor's shop, so you have to pay for if you want a better garment. Similarly, what kind of body you will get, that will depend on your work. So in this life you may be a prime minister, but if you have worked like menial dogs and hogs, then you are going to get body of a dog and hog. That is nature's gift. You cannot check it. You have no hand on the administration of the nature. That is not possible. Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14]. If you have infected some disease, you must suffer from that. This is nature's law. You cannot say, "Although I have infected the smallpox disease, I'll not suffer." No, you have to suffer. Or you have to die of that disease. You cannot check it. So they do not know how nature is going. Declaring independence. That is foolishness. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani [Bg. 3.27]. And people are kept in ignorance. There is no school, no college, no institution to give instructions about this science. This is the position of modern civilization. People are kept in ignorance. They got the chance of human body to understand the value of life, but they are not given education by the father, by the guardian, by the king, by the guru. Nobody is giving. Therefore sastra says you should not become a guru, you should not become a father, you should not become a king unless you are able to save him from these laws of nature, repetition of birth and death. Then you should not become. It's the duty of the guardians to give education to the dependents about the spiritual knowledge. But who is doing that? We are trying our bit because we are ordered by superior that "You do it." So we are trying as far as possible, that's all.
Ali: Is there a time limit for this spiritual growth?
Prabhupada: No, in a moment you can be spiritually enlightened. So why don't you agree?
Ali: Why I mean is from the time that you start, has it got deadline or something.
Prabhupada: Well, starting, just like when there is a seed sown, the starting is there. Now it grows a tree and there is fruit, there is flowers. The fruit is green now. When it is yellow mango and ripe, you can take. The beginning is when you sow the seed. Just like child. The father puts the seed within the womb of the mother. The body begins from that moment, grows and grows. When it is fully grown up it comes out and acts and then walks. So beginning is there. You can begin at any moment. But it is spiritual, it does not take so much time. You should remember spiritual. Just like speed, there are different kinds of speed. Mental speed and physical speed. Physical speed, you have got a very good nice airplane. Still, you have to take ten hours to reach London. And mental speed, you can immediately, within a second, go to London. And spiritual speed, still more. Krsna says tyaktva deham punar janma mam eti [Bg. 4.9], as soon as you give up the body you immediately go to Krsna. That is spiritual speed. Immediately. Not that so many miles, oh, Krsnaloka is far, far above this material sky, then spiritual sky. No. The spiritual speed is so high that tyaktva deham, as soon as you give up this body, immediately. You can compare material speed and mental speed. Although you haven't got spiritual idea, still, we can at least imagine what is that spiritual speed. The mental speed is so rapid that by the speedy airplane I'll have to take four hours, you can reach there in four seconds by mental speed. That is with our experience. Then we can imagine how speedy is spiritual. It is actually known by education. It is a science. It is not sentiment. And everything is there.
Ali: How do you classify dreams?
Prabhupada: Dreams is mental, subtle platform. Your gross body is not working, but your subtle mind is working. That's all. It is material.
Ali: The master is usually on a totally different level. It is quite obvious, from the actions, the talks, the understanding and the experience. How close does one student usually, how close does he get to the master? How closely does he understand the master? Or he could interrelate himself to the master?
Hari-sauri: He's asking how intimate does the connection become between the master and the disciples.
Prabhupada: Simply by association.
Ali: But whatever you talk about, it comes from experience.
Prabhupada: It is association. Just like you came yesterday, you have come again. Similarly, if you come again and again, then you become one of them. Association. You understand, then you become one of them. If you remain in touch with the fire, then you become warm, warm, warmer, and then fire. That example I have given you, the iron rod. Put it in the fire, association, it becomes warm, warmer, and one day, iron. After few hours you'll see that the iron rod is red hot. It is no more iron; now it is fire. Association. By association one can become spiritualized. It is very important thing. We are opening so many branches all over the world with this purpose, to give the facility of association.
Ali: There are also so many masters now, so many.
Prabhupada: That is your choice. Just like when you go to the market there are so many shops. Now it is your choice from which shop you have to purchase. First of all, you must know what is your need. If you want gold and if you go to the cigarette shop, "Give me gold," then what benefit you'll get? He'll give you a cigarette and he'll cheat you, "Here is gold."
Atreya Rsi: Srila Prabhupada, is it possible to sit inside? There are seven, eight people.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Atreya Rsi: You can continue the discussion inside. [break]
Prabhupada: ...a small child, he does not know what is the meaning of bowing down. But he's doing it. This is association. But he's getting benefit. Not that because he does not know, he's not getting benefit. He's getting benefit. (pause) You can put this light on that side, anywhere, or down, keep it down. (speaks in Hindi to guests)
Atreya Rsi: Mr. Sharma is a devotee. He's a wonderful person. He's taken to spiritual life and is very serious about it. Mr. Sahani is also very serious, he's...
Prabhupada: No, every Indian is a devotee. This is the privilege of taking birth in India. There is... Naturally he's devotee, and if he takes little education, take advantage of the Vedic instructions, then his life is successful. In the sastra it is said even the demigods, they desire to take birth in India because this facility is there in India. This facility, the land is so sanctified that anyone who takes the body from this land, he's born sanctified. Now, if he further takes advantage of the Vedic knowledge, then his life becomes successful. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is that anyone who has taken birth in India, make his life successful, and then preach this knowledge to the outside world. The exact word,
bharata bhumite manusya janma haila yara
janma sarthaka kari 'kara para-upakara
 [Cc. Adi 9.41]
Outside India they are in darkness. So it is the duty of the Indian to make his life perfect and spread his spiritual knowledge to the outside world. That is real welfare activity in the human society. That we are trying to do. Unfortunately, they have not taken very seriously what glorious activities for India we are doing. They do not understand.
Mrs. Sahani: Excuse me, does that mean that people from other religions may..., it is not possible for them to achieve the highest perfection?
Prabhupada: It's possible. If you take advantage of the highest college, then you become..., there is possibility to becoming highly educated. You cannot become highly educated sitting down in a dark room. That is not possible. Is it possible? You have to associate, take admission in the society where people are actually highly educated. The advantage is there, the possibility is there, but you have to take it.
Mrs. Sahani: From their own religion also.
Prabhupada: Why you bring in religion? We are talking of knowledge.
Mrs. Sahani: Knowledge is there in all the religions.
Prabhupada: Yes. Religion is now misunderstood. Religion is described in the dictionary, "a faith." So faith..., your faith may be something, my faith may be something, that is not religion. Religion is described in the Vedic literature, "the law given by God." That is religion. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. So, just like law means the order given by the state, similarly, religion means the order given by God. So if you do not know what is God, what is His order, then what is your religion? Do you believe it or not? If you do not know what is God, if you do not know what is His word or what is His order, then where is your religion? If you do not know what is the government and if you do not know what is the government's order, then where is the question of law-abiding? Religion means, according to Vedic description.... Just like Krsna said, mam ekam saranam vraja. This is religion. Sarva-dharman parityajya: [Bg. 18.66] "Give up all this nonsense. Surrender unto Me." So what is the objection? Religion is one, surrender to God. So where is the objection? And God says that "You surrender to Me." So where is the objection? Religion cannot be two. Religion is one, surrender to God. If I say, "You are Muslim, you surrender to God, " do you have any objection? If I say to Christian, "You surrender to God," will he have any objection? Therefore religion is one; there cannot be two religions. Why you are bringing other religions? There is no question of other religions. Religion is one. You accept it?
Mrs. Sahani: Yes.
Prabhupada: Nobody should have any objection. And if you do not surrender to God, then what is the meaning of your religion? It is bogus. That is the beginning of Srimad-Bhagavatam: dharmah projjhita kaitavo 'tra [SB 1.1.2]. Here in the Srimad-Bhagavatam all this bogus type of religion is rejected. And what is that bogus type of religion? Bogus type means which religion does not know who is God and how to love Him. That's all. Do you agree or not? So religion cannot be two; religion one. God is one, and to offer our submission to Him, that is religion. Simple thing. And God comes personally to demand this. Sarva dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. This is religion. Now say what is your objection about this religion.
Mrs. Sahani: No objection at all. Religion means surrender to God.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is religion. And that is first-class faith which teaches how to surrender to God. Sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhoksaje [SB 1.2.6].
Mrs. Sahani: This is the highest knowledge.
Prabhupada: That is the highest knowledge. It doesn't matter whether you are Muhammadan, Christian or Hindu or this or that. Whether you know God and you have fully surrendered to Him, then it is perfect. Otherwise, it is simply waste of time. Srama eva hi kevamalam. If you simply perform the ritualistic ceremonies very strictly, but you have no idea of God, you have no knowledge how to love Him, it is simply waste of time. Srama eva hi kevalam.
dharmah svanusthitah pumsam
visvaksena kathasu yah
notpadayed yadi ratim
srama eva hi kevalam
 [SB 1.2.8]
You are very religious, very nice, but are you interested with God or dog? "No, I am interested with dog." Then where is religion? Religion means you must be interested with God. That is religion What is the report? How much they are interested now?
Nava-yauvana: Forty million pounds.
Prabhupada: Yes. Forty million pounds are being spent in Germany to take care of dog. This is advancement of civilization.
Mrs. Sahani: And how to surrender to God, how to do this?
Prabhupada: Simply surrender to God, immediately. He says sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66].
Mrs. Sahani: For a layman who doesn't know anything.
Prabhupada: People do not know. Therefore God comes personally to teach you. Why don't you take the teaching? Why don't you take the teaching? Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam [Bg. 18.66], why don't you become fully surrendered to Krsna?
Mrs. Sahani: Yes, we follow, you know. Someone has to create interest first, and then people will take the teaching.
Prabhupada: That is conditional. But He wants unconditional surrender. That is religion. Of course, if you cannot surrender unconditionally, then you at least practice. That is also instructed. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. At least think of Krsna, man-mana. What is the difficulty if you think of Krsna, man-mana. What is the difficulty if you think of Krsna? What is the difficulty? Is there any difficulty?
Mrs. Sahani: You first have to surrender to God.
Prabhupada: Eh? No difficulty. If you chant Krsna Krsna, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, where is the difficulty? That is mana-mana. Apply your mind to Krsna. Where is the difficulty? The difficulty is that we'll not do it. That is our determination. We shall do everything, but not this. That is the difficulty. Otherwise, there is no difficulty. Everyone will teach about Bhagavad-gita, so many things they will speak, but nobody speaks that you surrender to Krsna. Rather, they will say Krsna is fictitious, there was no Krsna, there was no... They mislead, that's all. And he becomes a big scholar. The more he deviates you, misguides you, he become a big scholar. This is going on. Is it not? There are so many scholars, politicians, philosophers, they are talking of Bhagavad-gita. Nobody is talking that Krsna, surrender to Krsna. Am I right or wrong? They'll say "We have got different meaning of Krsna" All the sages, all the saintly persons, they have accepted Krsna. Just like Arjuna, when he understood Bhagavad-gita, he immediately accepted Krsna: param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan [Bg. 10.12]. This is understanding of Krsna. Sarvam etad rtam manye yan mam vadasi kesava [Bg. 10.14]. "Kesava, whatever You have spoken, I take it altogether as it is." Sarvam etad rtam manye [Bg. 10.14]. All fact. And they are manufacturing some meaning. How they'll understand Krsna? This is going on. And our, this movement has become little successful.... People give me such credit, "Swamiji, you have done wonderful." But I do not know what wonderful. I do not know any magic. I simply say that you accept Krsna or Bhagavad-gita as it is. That's all. That is my magic. And they are accepting it. They are accepting Bhagavad-gita as it is. They do not make any interpretation, that "Krsna means this, Kuruksetra means this, Pandavas means this." No. We are presenting Bhagavad-gita as it is. You have seen our Bhagavad-gita? That's all. [break] Before this, before this movement I started ten years ago, so many swamis, philosophers came in the Western country. Not a single person became a devotee of Krsna. That is our challenge. And now you'll find thousands and thousands. Because, what is secret? "As it is," that's all. No change.
Mr. Sahani: But as it is, it is in Sanskrit, and it is very difficult to understand in the...
Prabhupada: Not at all. What is the difficulty? Suppose
dharma-ksetre kuru-ksetre
samaveta yuyutsavah
mamakah pandavas caiva
kim akurvata sanjaya
 [Bg. 1.1]
So dharma-ksetre kuru-ksetre. Kuruksetra is still there, and it is a dharma-ksetra. From Vedic order, Kuruksetra is dharma acaret. Still, people go there by thousands and by millions as pilgrimage. So where is the difficulty dharma-ksetre kuru-ksetre [Bg. 1.1]? Unless you make difficulty. But as the literature is, dharma-ksetre kuru-ksetre [Bg. 1.1], where is the difficulty to understand it? Kuruksetra is there and it is dharma-ksetra. Where is the difficulty? Unless you make it difficult.
Ali: What is the meaning of "as it is."
Prabhupada: "As it is" means Kuruksetra is Kuruksetra, dharma-ksetra is dharma-ksetra. That is "as it is."
Ali: Krsna is Krsna.
Prabhupada: Krsna is Krsna, Pandava is Pandava. That is "as it is."
Ali: Krsna explains who is.
Prabhupada: No, first of all you have to understand. So Krsna is explained Himself, "I am this." Mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya [Bg. 7.7]. "There is no more superior authority than Me." We accept it. Why you accept another authority to understand Krsna? Krsna says mattah parataram nanyat [Bg. 7.7]. So there is no difficulty as it is. But we create difficulty. If somebody asks me, "Where is your nose?" if I say, "Here is my nose." And if I say, "No here," (laughter) then it is difficulty. If I say directly, "Here is my nose," then there will be no difficulty. But if I want to do like this, then it is difficulty. There is no difficulty. We have created difficulty. That is our folly. Therefore there is no result. That is the present position, that we have created difficulty in understanding Bhagavad-gita and we Indians are now practically out of our own culture.
Mrs. Sahani: Those who don't understand Krsna, it's difficult for them.
Prabhupada: How he will understand? He creates difficulty to understand Krsna. Krsna says, "I am the supreme authority," and the person who heard from Krsna, he says param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam [Bg. 10.12]. He accepts Krsna as the supreme authority, Arjuna. And why we deviate? The speaker says that He is the supreme authority, and the listener, Arjuna, accepts Him. Now why we interpret? What right you have got interpretation?
Mrs. Sahani: We interpret it according to our own design.
Prabhupada: Eh? You cannot, if you have own design, don't touch Bhagavad-gita. You make your own design and preach otherwise. Why you take advantage of the Bhagavad-gita? This is criminal. If you have got a different philosophy, you preach. Everyone has got the right. But why you misinterpret Bhagavad-gita? When you take advantage of the popularity of Bhagavad-gita and you speak nonsense, that is not good. That has murdered the whole thing. And practically we see that. Bhagavad-gita as it is, you try to understand, you get the benefit and you life is successful. Besides that, interpretation when it is required. When things are understood directly, there is no question of interpretation. The law of interpretation is like this: when the things are not distinct, then you can interpret in your own way, I can interpret in my own way, but when the things are distinct, there is no question of interpretation.
Mrs. Sahani: If that's so, then we don't understand because we don't want to understand.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is the folly. You don't want to understand.
Mrs. Sahani: Because we have so many desire, we don't want to surrender.
Prabhupada: We want to become bigger than Krsna, than Arjuna. This is our folly. But the process is, as recommended in the Bhagavad-gita, evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo viduh [Bg. 4.2]. You have to understand from the higher authorities.
imam vivasvate yogam
proktavan aham avyayam
vivasvan manave praha
manur iksvakave 'bravit
 [Bg. 4.1]
evam parampara-praptam
imam rajarsayo viduh
sa kaleneha mahata
yogo nastah parantapa
 [Bg. 4.2]
As soon as you give up this line of understanding, then it is lost. Yogo nastah parantapa. Then you are dealing in not Bhagavad-gita, something else, something rubbish. Yogo nastah, it is nastah, it is spoiled. As soon as you interpret, it is spoiled. First of all, why you should interpret? If the meaning is clear, there is no chance of interpreting. If the meaning is not clear, then you can interpret. Dharma-ksetre kuru-ksetre [Bg. 1.1] is clear. Why should you interpret? Baliye (Hindi) If dharma-ksetra kuru-ksetra is clear, why would you interpret? When things are clear, interpretation means you are playing joke. So our, this movement presenting Bhagavad-gita as it is. So they are being accepted all over the world, and we are getting good devotees, sincere devotees. All parts of the world.
Ali: In choosing a master you mentioned that the choice is yours, but you have to know what you are after. For instance, if you are after...
Prabhupada: Our offer is you surrender to God. Now it is you choice, whether you want to surrender not. That is you business. We are offering everyone that you surrender to Krsna, or God. Krsna also says the same thing, "You surrender to Me," and we are asking, "You surrender to Krsna." The business is the same, there is no change, as it is. Krsna says, "You surrender to Me," we say, "You surrender to Krsna." There is no difference. As it is.
Ali: My question was how could one choose when he himself is ignorant?
Prabhupada: By knowledge. Here is knowledge. You have not surrendered to God, you take the knowledge from God that "You surrender to Me." That is knowledge. Why don't you take it? Where is the question of ignorance? You may be in ignorance, but when the knowledge comes directly, that "You surrender to Me," then you can do it. Just like a man is fallen in a dark well. He's crying, "Save me, save me," and one man drops a rope, "Please catch it, I'll save you." If you don't catch, then whose fault it is? Krsna comes directly, paritranaya sadhunam [Bg. 4.8], and He says, "Do it." If you don't do it, then whose fault it is? It is your fault. You don't catch it. Krsna says, "Here is the rope, catch it," then whose fault is it?
Mrs. Sahani: Excuse me, once you surrender to God, will you still have to look for an authority to guide you, or Krsna helps you to find Him?
Prabhupada: Yes, Krsna is giving direction, but we have no such intelligence. Therefore Krsna advises:
tad viddhi pranipatena
pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jnanam
jnaninas tattva-darsinah
 [Bg. 4.34]
You go to a person who has seen the truth and you understand. Because they are not understanding Krsna directly or through the agent, they are misled, they are misinterpreting. That is their folly. They'll not understand Krsna directly, neither they'll understand through Krsna's agent. Therefore they are misguided.
Mrs. Sahani: But is it possible to understand Krsna directly?
Prabhupada: No. You can if you are intelligent enough. Otherwise, everyone can take to Krsna consciousness. He says directly everyone. He's not saying to Arjuna: sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam [Bg. 18.66]. Why don't you do it? Because you cannot understand it. If you understood, you have done it immediately. But you do not understand. Therefore Krsna-tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya upadeksyanti [Bg. 4.34] -- you have to understand through the person who tatva-darsinah, who has seen Krsna. Tattva-darsi, not theoretical. You have to approach such person, then he will show you, "Here is Krsna." But if you don't follow the instruction in Bhagavad-gita directly or indirectly.... Krsna says sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66], if you do not do that and because you may not understand Krsna.... But Krsna also says tad viddhi pranipatena... You do not go to a seer, then how you'll understand Krsna? You do not understand directly or indirectly. Then you are hopeless.
Mrs. Sahani: If you don't understand Krsna directly...
Prabhupada: Neither indirectly. If you don't understand directly, you should go to a person who understands Krsna. But if you don't do either of these things, then how you'll understand Krsna?
Mrs. Sahani: But how to, because in India there's so many...
Prabhupada: Don' talk of India; at any place.
Mrs. Sahani: Any place, yes. But how do we be sure that this person knows Krsna?
Atreya Rsi: How can she be sure that the spiritual master is bona fide?
Prabhupada: If when you see that he does not speak anything except Krsna, that is tattva-darsi. If you are expert businessman in certain line, you have no other business than to talk with on that line. Suppose if you are to purchase some gold, then you have to go to the gold market for dealing with gold. Why should we go to the ice market? That is your ignorance. If you want to know Krsna, then you have to know from the persons who are dealing with Krsna. That's all. They have no other business. Our Krsna consciousness movement means we are dealing with Krsna. That's all. We're writing books, so many books for Krsna. We are preaching and going country to country. We simple deal with Krsna. Therefore the movement is known as "Krsna consciousness." Somebody suggested "Why don't you write 'God consciousness'?" No, if I say "God consciousness," they'll bring so many gods. It is very simple. If we take it seriously, then benefit is there. But if we hesitate, it is our misfortune.
manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascin mam vetti tattvatah
 [Bg. 7.3]
To understand Krsna is not a joke. Manusyanam sahasresu-out of millions and millions of persons, kascid yatati siddhaye, one may try for perfection of life. And yatatam api siddhanam [Bg. 7.3], and out of many such persons who have attained perfection, kascin vetti mam tattvatah, somebody may know. So to understand Krsna is not so easy job. But Krsna personally comes and teaches about Himself, and still if we do not take, that is our misfortune. If we still interpret, misinterpret rather, then it is our misfortune. What can be done? We should, those who are Indians, Bharatavarsi, we have got a particular duty. Bharata bhumite haila manusya janma yara [Cc. Adi 9.41]. One who has taken birth as a human being in India, he should make his life perfect and distribute the knowledge. So you are outside India, you make your life perfect and distribute this knowledge. This is the duty of Indians. Why outside India they should remain in darkness? Distribute the knowledge. But unless you make your life perfect, how you can distribute?
Mrs. Sahani: Takes very long.
Prabhupada: Eh? Very easy, provided you want to do it.
Mrs. Sahani: But takes long time to surrender to Krsna.
Prabhupada: No long time, I say a moment. Krsna says sarva dharman parityajya mam ekam [Bg. 18.66]. You do it. You can do it in a moment, but you'll not do it. That is the difficulty.
Mrs. Sahani: Yes, we are doing that.
Prabhupada: You can do it immediately, but unfortunately you'll not do it. What can be done? There is a story, I may narrate it. One poor man was begging on the street, and Lord Siva and Parvati was passing as ordinary man. So Parvati requested Lord Siva that this poor man, he's asking, he's begging, so requested him, "Why don't you give him something?" And Lord Siva replied, "Even if I give, he'll not be able to enjoy it. He's so unfortunate." "Oh, that we shall see. Why don't you give?" So Lord Siva, in a watermelon, gave him, say, one thousand dollars. "You take this watermelon." So he thanked him, and after that he thought "What I shall do with this watermelon?" So another man came, "Sir, if you take this watermelon and give me one anna." So he gave one anna and he took it. Because he had no good fortune to take that money within the watermelon. Our fortune is like that. Krsna is giving us the final benefit, but we are not taking care of. This is our misfortune.
Mr. Sahani: It is knowledge, that we don't have the knowledge, or enlightenment that in that watermelon there is something which is worth, or it is only that we don't want to do it, or we don't want to take the trouble?
Prabhupada: That chance is there. You can take the watermelon and cut it, but before that doing if you give it to somebody else, that is your misfortune.
Mr. Sahani: No, fortune is something which we say...
Prabhupada: No, I am talking of misfortune. That the perfect knowledge is being distributed by Krsna, but we are so misfortunate we do not take it. That is my fault. Krsna...
Mr. Sahani: Misfortune is again, is not in the hands of human being.
Prabhupada: No, misfortune is your creation. Fortune... Man is the architect of his own fortune. So you can create your fortune and misfortune. That is the world, going on, so many people, they are working, somebody is creating fortune, somebody is creating misfortune. So anyway, when Krsna directly is giving you the knowledge, perfect knowledge, why don't you take it? Is it not misfortune?
Mr. Sahani: Well, that probably is ignorance.
Prabhupada: THat is misfortune. Ignorance means misfortune. The unfortunate persons are those who are ignorant, uneducated. Therefore you have to take education to become fortunate. And that education is being imparted by Krsna, but you don't take it. That is misfortune. If you take education from Krsna, you become fortunate. So why don't you take it? Krsna has said this very thing.
na mam duskrtino mudhah
prapadyante naradhamah
mayayapahrta-jnana
asuram bhavam asritah
 [Bg. 7.15]
These are the classes. One who does not take the advantage of Krsna's instruction, he's immediately grouped in these category: duskrtinah, mudhah, naradhamah, mayayapahrta-jnana, asuram bhavam. Krsna says personally. One who does not take to Krsna's instruction, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam [Bg. 18.66], then how he's grouped? He's grouped:
na mam duskrtino mudhah
prapadyante naradhamah
mayayapahrta-jnana
asuram bhavam asritah
 [Bg. 7.15]
He is grouped. Duskrtinah means he has got intelligence, krti. Krti means one who has got intelligence, merit. But his merit is being utilized for sinful activities, duskrtinah. If merit is used for good work, that is called sukrtina. And if the merit is used for manufacturing something harmful to the human society, then it is duskrtina. Merit is there. A thief, rascal and cheater, he has got good merit, but he's using it for bad purpose. They are duskrtina. Why he has become so? Mudhah. Because he does not know his interest, ass. The example is ass, mudhah. The ass does not know his interest. He is loading tons of cloth for others' interest, for a morsel of grass. And the rascal does not know he can get grass anywhere. Why he is taking so much trouble? Mudhah. Na mam duskrtino, naradhamah. And this human life was meant for understanding this, nara, but he has misused his life's asset. Naradhamah, lowest of the mankind. How it happened? They are so educated. mayayapahrta-jnana. Their education has no value. Why? Asuram bhavam, don't care for Krsna, don't care for God. "We are everything, we are God." This is going on. mayayapahrta-jnana asuram bhavam asritah. These are descriptions in the Bhagavad-gita.
catur-vidha bhajante mam
janah sukrtino 'rjuna
arto jijnasur artharthi
jnani ca bharatarsabha
 [Bg. 7.16]
Everything is explained there. If somebody comes to Krsna even with material motive, arto artharthi... There are four classes of men: arto, artharthi, jnani, jijnasur. So jnani, for the sake of knowledge, tries to understand what is God, what is Krsna. Jijnasur, inquisitive, actually what is Krsna. And those who are less than them, when they become distressed, artha, or in need of money, they pray to Krsna. Still, they have gone to Krsna. Therefore they are called sukrtinah. And one who has not gone to Krsna, simply speculating, that description, mayayapahrta-jnana. These things are there.
Mr. Sahani: Maya is also very attached to everybody, it still can be jijnasur and jnani, (Hindi).
Prabhupada: No, no. (Hindi) Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te. Your first business is to surrender. Then maya will not touch you.
Mrs. Sahani: Krsna says that not even a leaf moves without His desire, and this present life...
Prabhupada: Yes, you have to take sanction. You have to take sanction because Krsna is the supreme controller. If you request repeatedly, "Krsna, I want to steal something," so Krsna will say, "No, no, don't do it, it is not good." But...
Mrs. Sahani: But bhakti...
Prabhupada: It is not bhakti, it is a common affair. You want to do some... Just like a thief. A thief steals very privately, why? Because Krsna says, "Don't do it." But he does still. So Krsna says always good things, but you don't care for it.
Mr. Sahani: But when, as said, that no leaf moves without the intentions of Krsna...
Prabhupada: Without hearing the good advice of Krsna, he does it at his risk. That's all. He'll be arrested, he'll be put into jail. That's all. He'll suffer. But Krsna gives him good counsel, "Don't do it." Mattah smrtir jnanam apohanam ca. Sarvasya caham hrdi sannivisto mattah smrtir jnanam apohanam ca [Bg. 15.15]. He's situated in every heart, but if you persist to do something, He gives, "All right, do at your risk. What can I do?" You suffer. That independence you have got. Just like State. State does not advise anyone that "You become a criminal." But when he becomes criminal, then put into jail. State says, "Everyone go to the university, be educated," but if you make your choice, go to the prison house, you can make your choice. Similarly, Krsna says everyone, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. But if you make your choice to go to hell, what can He do?
Mrs. Sahani: This means we have the freedom.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes, you he got little freedom. Therefore Krsna says mam ekam saranam vraja, "You do it." He does not force. He can force you. He's all-powerful. But He does not force. He gives you the chance, "Do it, you'll be happy." If you don't do it, that is your choice. Yathecchasi tatha kuru [Bg. 18.63]. Eh? Find out this verse. Yathecchasi tatha kuru. Krsna gives Arjuna the freedom, "Now I have given you all instruction, now make your choice." Yathecchasi tatha kuru. "Whatever you like, you do." What is the difficulty? Could not find? Ask somebody else.
Atreya Rsi: Hari-sauri's trying.
Prabhupada: Why don't you ask Pradyumna?
Hari-sauri: He's way upstairs...
Prabhupada: But downstairs he cannot come!
Hari-sauri: Well, I tried to look it up in the index.
Prabhupada: Index is not there. It is in the middle, yathecchasi tatha kuru [Bg. 18.63]. Index you'll find only the beginning. Just after, just before the verse sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66].
Hari-sauri: Oh. Iti te jnanam...
Prabhupada: Ah, iti te jnanam.
Hari-sauri: ...akhyatam guhyad guhyataram maya vimrsyaitad asesena yathecchasi tatha kuru.
Prabhupada: "I have given you knowledge, confidential, more confidential, most confidential. Now you consider, you deliberate upon this and do whatever you like." And what Arjuna replied? Nasto mohah smrtir labdha tvat-prasadan kesava. Find it.
Hari-sauri:
nasto mohah smrtir labdha
tvat-prasadan mayacyuta
sthito 'smi gata-sandehah...
Prabhupada: Sthito 'smi gata-sandehah karisye vacanam tava [Bg. 18.73]. This is understanding. "Now my illusion is gone," nasto mohah. Smrtir labdha. "I am in my original consciousness." So what you'll do? Karisye vacanam tava. "You are asking to me to fight? I shall do it." Everything is explained. Krsna gives you freedom, yathecchasi tatha kuru [Bg. 18.63]. And one who understands Krsna, he says, karisye vacanam tava. That's it. Not by interpretation, or refuse by interpretation. That is not Krsna's... Karisye vacanam tava. This is understanding. Otherwise simply waste of time. Srama eva hi kevalam [SB 1.2.8]. If you like, you can waste your time. And find out this verse, na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah [Bg. 18.69], ya idam paramam guhyam mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati [Bg 18.68]. Find that verse, ya idam paramam guhyam mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati.
Pradyumna: What's the first word?
Hari-sauri: Jayanam.
Prabhupada: Read, after sixty-fourth verse, read all the verses.
Pradyumna:
sarva-guhyatamam bhuyah
srnu me paramam vacah
isto 'si me drdham iti
tato vaksyami te hitam
"Because you are My very dear friend, I am speaking to you the most confidential part of knowledge. Hear this from Me, for it is for your benefit."
man-mana bhava mad-bhakto
mad-yaji mam namaskuru

 [Bg. 18.65]
"Always think of Me and become My devotee. Worship Me and offer your homage unto Me. Thus you will come to Me without fail. I promise you this because you are My very dear friend."
sarva-dharman parityajya
mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo

 [Bg. 18.66]
"Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reaction. Do not fear."
idam te natapaskaya
nabhaktaya kadacana
na casusrusave vacyam
na ca mam yo 'bhyasuyati
"This confidential knowledge may not be explained to those who are not austere, or devoted, or engaged in devotional service, nor to one who is envious of Me."
ya idam paramam guhyam
mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati
bhaktim mayi param krtva
mam evaisyaty asamsayah
 [Bg 18.68]
"For one who explains the supreme secret to the devotees, devotional service is guaranteed, and at the end he will come back to Me."
na ca tasman manusyesu
kascin me priya-krttamah
bhavita na ca me tasmad
anyah priyataro bhuvi
 [Bg. 18.69]
"There is no servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one more dear."
Prabhupada: This is decided, that if we present this Bhagavad-gita as it is, ya idam param? What is that? Ya idam paramam guhyam [Bg 18.68]?
Pradyumna:
ya idam paramam guhyam
mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati
bhaktim mayi param krtva
mam evaisyaty asamsayah
 [Bg 18.68]
Prabhupada: Asamsayah. So he becomes immediately recognized by Krsna. If you preach Bhagavad-gita as it is, immediately you become recognized. Na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah [Bg. 18.69]. So one has to understand it perfectly well and then preach, then his life is perfect. And what Sanjaya says? Yatra yogesvaro?
Pradyumna:
yatra yogesvarah krsno
yatra partho dhanur-dharah
tatra srir vijayo bhutir
dhruva nitir matir mama
Prabhupada: Jaya.
Pradyumna: "Wherever there is Krsna, the master of all mystics, and wherever there is Arjuna, the supreme archer, there will also certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power, and morality. That is my opinion."
Prabhupada: So understand Krsna like Arjuna. Then Krsna is there, Arjuna is there, and all victory is there.
Mrs. Sahani: Krsna is Krsna. Anyone who surrenders to Krsna can become Arjuna? Krsna is Krsna, anyone who surrenders to Krsna...
Prabhupada: He's like Arjuna. He's like Arjuna. What is Arjuna's qualification? He surrendered, and he says karisye vacanam tava [Bg. 18.73]. You become also Arjuna-like.
Mrs. Sahani: And the victory is there.
Prabhupada: Yes, then victory is there. But if one can avoid Krsna or kill Krsna, then where is victory?
Mrs. Sahani: Victory.
Prabhupada: Victory, any man you can say victory. Where there is Krsna, there is victory.
Mr. Sahani: But we don't want to go and fight like Arjuna, go out and kill people.
Prabhupada: Why? If Krsna orders, you must. Why don't you like? That is your misfortune. What Krsna's... Karisye vacanam tava. That is following. You like or may not like. Arjuna did not like to fight. That's a fact. Therefore whole Bhagavad-gita is spoken to him. Arjuna did not like fight. But when he understood Bhagavad-gita, he said, "Yes," karisye vacanam tava [Bg. 18.73]. You cannot give your verdict. What Krsna says, you have to do it. That is Krsna conscious. You like or don't like, that doesn't matter. Just like a child. He likes or not likes, but what the parent says, he has to do. That is his success. If the child says, "Father, I don't like to go to school," will the father agree? "No, you must go to school." And if he agrees, that is his benefit. Our liking, not liking, has no value. What Krsna likes, we have to do it. Anukulyena krsnanu-silanam [Cc. Madhya 19.167], that is bhakti. Bhakti means anukulyena krsnanu-silanam. You have to act which is favorable to Krsna. That is bhakti. You cannot make you choice. What Krsna says, you do it. That is bhakti. [break] What is their reason?
Mrs. Sahani: Well, they were not even Krsna conscious people.
Prabhupada: Who?
Mrs. Sahani: Kauravas.
Prabhupada: Kaurava, oh. Yes. No, not that they are not Krsna conscious, they may be. That's all right. My business is to execute what Krsna says. That's all. That is bhakti.
sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam
tat-paratvena nirmalam
hrsikena hrsikesa
sevanam bhaktir ucyate
 [Cc. Madhya 19.170]
Anyabhilasita-sunyam jnana-karmady anavrtam anukulyena krsnanu [Brs. 1.1.11]. We have to act to satisfy Krsna. That is bhakti. We cannot make our choice, that "This is good, this is bad." Whatever Krsna says is all right. Then it is bhakti. Arjuna proposed that "Krsna, why shall I fight with my brothers? After all, they are my brothers. They are enjoying the kingdom. Let them enjoy. I shall better live by begging. Why shall I fight with them?" It is a very good proposal, very gentlemanlike. But Krsna said, "No, you must fight." Kutas tva kasmalam idam visame samupasthitam anarya-justam -- "You're talking like anarya. Fight." This is the instruction of the Bhagavad-gita. And when he understood that "Krsna wants it," he said, "Yes" -- karisye vacanam tava [Bg. 18.73]. "Yes." So we cannot discriminate what is good or bad. We have to act according to the order of Krsna. That is wanted. But you cannot do independently also. When Krsna orders, you do it. And Krsna will order when you are faithful servant. Buddhi-yogam dadami tam.

 [Bg. 10.10]
tesam evanukampartham

 [Bg. 10.11]
This is the process. If we manufacture our own ways, that is nonsense, that will not help us.
Mr. Sharma: When one person surrenders to God, to Lord Krsna, so does maya automatically vanish?
Prabhupada: Yes. Krsna says...
Mr. Sharma: If I say, I pray to God, "O Lord Krsna, I surrender unto You." So is..., maya will not touch me? I will not be affected by this material infection?
Prabhupada: Yes. If you fully surrender, maya will not touch you.
Mr. Sharma: How one surrenders? What is meaning of surrender?
Prabhupada: Surrender as He says, sarva-dharman... You have nothing to do. You have simply to do what Krsna says. That is surrender. You cannot reserve anything, that "I do it something for me and something for Krsna." That is not surrender. You have nothing to do except what Krsna says. That is surrender.
Mr. Sharma: If that is surrender, means I now surrender.
Prabhupada: Otherwise, it's not surrender.
Mr. Sharma: Only saying is not surrender?
Prabhupada: You have to act, become active.
Mr. Sharma: So one who has surrendered, what is his thinking and acting, how he lives in the world?
Prabhupada: He's active only on Krsna's business. That's all. He has no other business.
Mr. Sharma: So he does no other work. He does only what Krsna has said.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Mr. Sharma: Preaching and this and that.
Prabhupada: Yes, just like we are doing. Krsna said, "Surrender unto Me." And what we are preaching? We are preaching, "Sir, you surrender to Krsna." So what is the difficulty? Is there any difficulty? Krsna said "Surrender unto Me." And if I go to you "Mr. Sharma, you surrender to Krsna." So what is my difficulty?
Mr. Sharma: Suppose I want to surrender to God, to Krsna. How I will do it?
Prabhupada: No, no, first of all my position, because I am working on behalf of Krsna. So Krsna says, "You surrender unto Me." So if I say that "Sir, you surrender to Krsna," so where is my difficulty?
Mr. Sharma: You see, yes, I say I surrender to Krsna.
Prabhupada: You surrender, not surrender, that is you business. But my business is that I am requesting you that you surrender to Krsna. So where is my difficulty? You surrender, not, that is your business. But my business is to canvass, "Sir, you surrender to Krsna." So I am representing. And Krsna says, na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah [Bg. 18.69]. I have to be recognized by Krsna. That is my business. So if I do agree, then I become recognized by Krsna. You do or not do, that is your business. My only business is to request you.
Mr. Sharma: That I should surrender.
Prabhupada: Yes. But if you accept it, it is good for you; you don't accept it, that is your misfortune. But my business is finished.
Mr. Sharma: So fortune comes very much into it.
Prabhupada: Fortune you create. Man is the architect of his own fortune. If you don't accept Krsna's advice, then unfortunate. But my business is not difficult. We are simply going door to door and asking, "Sir, you become a devotee of Krsna." If he is inquisitive, "How can I become?" "You chant Hare Krsna." So where is my difficulty? Haven't got to pay you something. I simply carry the message of Krsna. And Krsna says na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya [Bg. 18.69]. "He's My most beloved person, who does this." So why shall I give up this simple job and become recognized by Krsna? It is very simple thing. That is the advice of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says amara ajnaya guru hana tara' ei desa [Cc. Madhya 7.128]. "All of you become guru and deliver these persons where you live." So how can I become guru? I have no education, I have no knowledge. No, no. You haven't got to-yare dekha, tare kaha 'krsna'-upadesa [Cc. Madhya 7.128]. "You go and simply instruct him what Krsna has said, you become guru." So Krsna has said, "Surrender unto Me," I say "You surrender to Krsna," I become guru. Even though I am a fool number one, I become guru, because I am repeating what Krsna has said. That's all. I don't require any education. Very simple thing. Everyone can become guru if he simply repeats what Krsna has said, that's all.
Mrs. Sahani: So it seems that to surrender to Krsna, the first thing...
Prabhupada: Unless he surrenders, how he can say others to surrender? Unless one has fully surrendered, if he says to others, "You surrender," that has no meaning. He must have surrendered. Then he can say to others, "You surrender." Unless he has surrendered, how he can take up this business, go door to door and say, "You surrender to Krsna, you surrender to Krsna"? That means he has surrendered. He has no other business. And what I am doing? I am doing the same thing. I have not given any bribe to these Europeans, Americans, or the anyone. No bribe, no show of gold manufacture. I simply say this, "You just become devotee of Krsna." That's all.
Mrs. Sahani: Chanting Krsna's name is very essential.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is the easiest way. By chanting Krsna, you are associating with Krsna. Because Krsna is absolute, so Krsna and Krsna's name, no difference. Krsna, Krsna's name, Krsna's form, Krsna's quality, everything, absolute. So chanting of Krsna's name means you are associating with Krsna. So if you are associating with Krsna, then gradually you become Krsna-ite.
Mrs. Sahani: Creates the desire to get knowledge.
Prabhupada: Yes. Ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. Caitanya Mahaprabhu has recommended, param vijayate sri-krsna-sankirtanam, ceto-darpana-marjanam. Just like if you remain in touch with the fire, certainly you become warm. So if you remain always in touch with Krsna, then you become Krsnized. Very easy. You haven't gone to the forest or Himalaya or meditate. Simply chant Hare Krsna. That is recommended in the sastra: harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam, kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva [Cc. Adi 17.21]. You cannot perform any severe austerities, penance. Wherever you remain, you chant Hare Krsna. And you become perfect. If not in one day... But you will become, if you continue chanting. And where is the difficulty? Where is the loss? And if there is some gain, why don't you try it? That is intelligence. I am not losing anything by chanting Hare Krsna. If there is any gain, why not chant? Huh? Why is the argument not to chant? There is no loss, but if there is any profit, why don't you try to take it. Sastra recommends. Krsna recommends, satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah [Bg. 9.14]. Find out this verse. Satatam kirtayanto mam.
Pradyumna:
satatam kirtayanto mam
yatantas ca drdha-vratah
namasyantas ca mam bhaktya
nitya-yukta upasate
 [Bg. 9.14]
Prabhupada: This is bhakti. So everything is there. If we don't misinterpret and take as it is, then we'll benefit. That is fortune. If somebody has one lakh of rupees and if he does not utilize it, then he is unfortunate. And if he's fortunate he can utilize it, he can make it millions of dollars. So the knowledge is already there, you haven't go to manufacture or speculate. You take it, you become perfect. We are preaching this Krsna consciousness, we don't manufacture anything. Here is this knowledge, Bhagavad-gita, just take it. Already it is there, everything. We haven't got to manufacture something, concoct something. Everything is there. You refer, you get knowledge, and be fortunate. Prasadam?
Atreya Rsi: Jaya Srila Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: Cut this fruit and distribute it. Bring one knife.
Atreya Rsi: We have prasadam downstairs.
Prabhupada: No, bring it here.
Hari-sauri: Do you want to take any...
Prabhupada: I will take little milk.
Hari-sauri: Any puffed rice or anything like that?
Prabhupada: You have puffed rice?
Hari-sauri: Yes.
Prabhupada: So puffed rice and milk. (Hindi) We are now advertised all over the world, "The beggar's nation." We have got satsampatti, and we are now advertised "beggar's nation." And actually doing that.
Mrs. Sahani: (Hindi)
Prabhupada: (Hindi) Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te. If you voluntarily become entangled with maya, that is your business. (Hindi) Krsna is light and maya is darkness. So when there is light, there is no question of darkness. Darkness automatically will go. When there will be sunrise in the morning, you haven't got to endeavor to drive away the darkness of night. It will automatically go. (Hindi) Knowledge is already there. Why should you remain misfortunate? Krsna says sukrtino 'rjuna. Catur-vidha bhajante mam sukrtino 'rjuna. Sukrtino means fortunate. So as soon as you begin Krsna bhajana, immediately you become fortunate. Sukrtino 'rjuna. Catur-vidha bhajante mam sukrtino 'rjuna. (Hindi) Immediately begin krsna-bhajana.
bharata bhumite haila manusya-janma yara
janma sarthaka kari 'kara para-upakara
 [Cc. Adi 9.41]
If we don't do it, then we are neglecting our duty. (Hindi) What is this, peach?
Atreya Rsi: It's a kind of peach. It's like peach.
Mr. Sharma: There are many other Indians living in town, so can we arrange one day that you come to town and meet all of them at our place or another place if it is possible?
Prabhupada: That will depend on...
Atreya Rsi: Can they come here? We can arrange for transportation. Because it's not very easy with the traffic.
Prabhupada: No, if they arrange meeting, we can go.
Mr. Sharma: And we can have some bhajana and prasada.
Mrs. Sahani: We can make it on Friday.
Atreya Rsi: Friday Srila Prabhupada is traveling. And Thursday at 11:30 you're going to see that building.
Prabhupada: I think within so short time it will (not) be possible for holding a meeting.
Atreya Rsi: For a short time?
Prabhupada: No, because there are two days only. On Thursday we have got already engagement.
Atreya Rsi: Yes, we have an engagement for Thursday.
Prabhupada: Then tomorrow only. So I don't think it will be possible.
Mr. Sharma: Thursday evening it is not possible?
Prabhupada: No.
Atreya Rsi: We're going to travel already into town once Thursday. We got some Persian puffed rice. They make puffed rice.
Prabhupada: I'll take. You first of all give them.
Atreya Rsi: We'll go downstairs and have prasadam.
Prabhupada: All right. Thank you very much for your coming. Jaya. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: Simply for Krsna, there is simply to understand Krsna. Anything else-waste of time. But in Krsna's connection there are varieties. Does it mean, although the dictaphone is there, still I shall write in my hand? Krsna consciousness cannot touch this. We don't follow this nonsense philosophy. Unnecessary vairagya. Suska-vairagya, dry knowledge.Devotee (1): Suska-vairagya.
Prabhupada: Suska, suska means dry. Oh, it is material, I shall not touch. I shall not touch. Just like that rascal, Ramakrishna, if anyone wanted to give him some money (gesture). (laughter) How, he does not touch money. These rascals, why shall I not touch? Come on, you have got money, George Harrison, spend. Yes, come on, I shall take it, for Krsna. We haven't come to this house for living very comfortably and enjoying. No, we have come here for Krsna's service.
Hamsaduta: This point is revolutionary in spiritual circles.
Prabhupada: Because it is Krsna's property. It is not my property, neither George's property. This is mistake. Everything belongs to Krsna. So it must be utilized for Krsna.
Revatinandana: Simply they don't know Bhagavad-gita.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Revatinandana: They don't know Bhagavad-gita, therefore they don't understand us.
Prabhupada: No, no. Therefore I say, all... Immediately, how you are all rascals. We have got a test. Test tube. As soon as one is not Krsna conscious, he is rascal, he is miscreant, he is lowest of the mankind, he has no knowledge. These, these are groups, they belong to. Na mam duskrtino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah. He maintains that he is very big man, Nixon, but we know that he is a rascal number one. This is Krsna consciousness. You can understand immediately what is what. By this test:
na mam duskrtino mudhah
prapadyante naradhamah
mayayapahrta-jnana
asuram bhavam asritah
 [Bg. 7.15]
[break]
Revatinandana: ...you said if he's coming from God, then what difference does it make?
Prabhupada: You can see that you are a fool (but) God is not fool. That is the difference. But God is (indistinct), He'll not speak foolish. Because he is above all this foolishness but you are within the foolishness. That is the difference. Try to answer them like that. You are within the status of foolishness, maya, and God is above maya. If God is also within the maya, as the rascal Mayavadis say, then what is the use of God? We are everything.
Yogesvara: They just accumulate knowledge just for knowledge sake.
Prabhupada: Not just for knowledge because they do not get any knowledge. They have no knowledge. What is the knowledge? They talk all nonsense. What is the knowledge?
Revatinandana: His argument was "Well there's no point in talking about this matter. All of us accept this." He's saying: all big authorities, they accept this point of view, that this was recently written literature.
Prabhupada: No, they don't know who are authorities.
Revatinandana: That's right.
Prabhupada: You manufacture your own authorities. You do not know. That is your misfortune. You do not know who is authority.
Devotee (2): They all smoke cigarettes and they think they're authorities. They're nonsense.
Revatinandana: I met another old authority on Sanskrit and he is sitting behind his desk and his whole body is shaking: "No, I'm not interested in the spiritual side of these Vedas. I'm just interested in the Sanskrit." He's dying you know, and still he's like that. That's their authority. You can't save them but...
Prabhupada: Adhyaki, adhyaki(?), therefore adhyaki(?).
Revatinandana: What's that?
Prabhupada: External. Adhyaki(?). (indistinct) ...one is interested in the body not in the soul. So he is a fool. This, this sculptor, he is simply interested in the outward body, he has no knowledge of the soul. And he wants to become a very famous man, remaining in the category of asses. Because one who is in the bodily concept of life, he is an ass. Go-khara, khara means ass. Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke [SB 10.84.13]. Anyone who is in the bodily concept of life he is no better than animal. The cats and dogs, they are also in the bodily concept of life. Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. So he has not advanced beyond these cats and dogs because he is in the same conception, that I am this body. A dog cannot understand that you are not this body. So similarly, if the human being cannot understand that he is not this body, what is the difference between him and the dog? So sastra says sa eva go-kharah: [SB 10.84.13] he's no better than the cows and the asses. That's all. And actually it is a fact. The first instruction of Bhagavad-gita, they cannot take it, and they're scholars. That is the most regrettable situation that these fools and rascals under the bodily concept of life, they are become authorities. Actually they are asses. Yes.
Revatinandana: I used to observe when I was going to the university that all my professors, their intellectual business was just a profession like digging ditches.
Prabhupada: That's all. For earning money.
Revatinandana: For their pleasure they're going home to drink beer and eat steak. That's all they're really interested in. They're just working to make money. I could see it and I didn't want to follow their footsteps.
Prabhupada: Just like a sudra, he cleans in the road for money. They are going as professor but the category is the same. You don't make any distinction between that sweeper and this professor. Or a hog and cat and dog. The hog is also working hard, whole day and night for stool, eating. So this man is also working like that. Beyond that he has no other knowledge.
Revatinandana: The scientists, they have a term. Psychologists, they call it the idiot savant. The idiot savant means he's an idiot but he has one particular talent and because of that talent he can get along. Just like sometimes you find an idiot, he can look at a column of figures and he can compute the sum in his head very easily but he can't even understand how to tie his shoes. And I think these scholars are like that, they're actually idiots but they have one talent for Sanskrit or for history and because of that they can get along. They can support their body but otherwise they have no qualifications.
Prabhupada: Sudra. Unless he gets that post, he'll starve. He has got some talent in some particular subject but he must get some service. By serving others, he'll be able to utilize his talent and get some money, then he'll eat. This is sudra's business. Dog's business. Just like a dog unless he has got a nice master, his position is very precarious. A street dog. Nobody will care neither it is (indistinct).
Yogesvara: You point out in Srimad-Bhagavatam that they go to school and learn to become Ph.D., then they have to knock on the door for a job and no one will open the door.
Prabhupada: No vacancy, sir. So just like dog.
Revatinandana: But they have a way to force them to work. The politicians force the scholars.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Revatinandana: If they don't print books, if they don't write a book every now and then and print it, get it published, they lose their tenure, their position as a professor. They must produce one book, then another book, then another book. If they don't, finished. In this way they are working all the time.
Prabhupada: The Marwaris in India, they don't educate their son. Just like Birla. They say, "We can purchase these rascals, why we should waste our time. (laughter) So-called technicians, so-called expert computer, these are... We can purchase, why we shall waste our time."
Hamsaduta: It's the same thing I learned in Germany. First I wanted to get my own press and I studied the situation very carefully and I saw it was ridiculous for us to do that, it's so much hard work. It's much easier to collect the money in the street by giving the magazine and then paying someone. They work very hard and do it. Everything is like that. They have so many people that can do everything. The one thing that people can't do is distribute Krsna consciousness and for that Krsna's giving so much money.
Prabhupada: Yes, therefore tasyaiva hetoh prayateta kovidah. That verse. Only for this purpose one should endeavor.
Hamsaduta: Yes. Krsna (indistinct) paying for that.
Prabhupada: You cannot purchase Krsna consciousness -- you can have money -- that you have to cultivate.
Revatinandana: Yeah, when Mr. Birla is getting old then he has to come to us, if he has any sense.
Prabhupada: No they say, they simply give primary education (indistinct) they can read, that's all. And (indistinct). They don't send because everyone knows that sending boys to the school means spoil them. That's all. I have seen intelligent boys, they go to school and he is spoiled. Yes, spoiled. He learns how to smoke, how to have sex, how to talk nonsense, how to use knife, how to fight, these things. At least at the present moment. Yes. Simply slaughterhouse, this so-called school is called slaughterhouse. Yes, slaughterhouse.
Revatinandana: It was when I went to school -- I was a nice little boy -- in school I failed out, only (indistinct).
Prabhupada: Yes, you must take as intelligent. That so..., time was wasted. Our, this gurukula should be taken care of very nicely. So nice preachers may come out. Brahmana, nice brahmana.
 tasyaiva hetoh prayateta kovido
na labhyate yad bhramatam upary adhah
  tal labhyate duhkhavad anyatah sukham
 kalena sarvatra gabhira-ramhasa
 [SB 1.5.18]
Revatinandana: I'm still thinking about the other morning, we were talking about how everything is actually spirit. Everything is composed of spiritual atoms actually, souls. We were talking about the...
Prabhupada: That is Vedic version, sarvam khalv idam brahma, everything is Brahman.
Revatinandana: When we speak about the transmigration of the soul, we speak about 8,400,000 species. Does that include the inanimate objects as well, within those 8,400,000?
Prabhupada: Sthavara, sthavara, they are called sthavara, immovable. He means hills, mountains, stones. They are called sthavara. Sthavara, which cannot move.
Revatinandana: So actually we don't really...
Prabhupada: Sthavara laksa-vimsati. Two million types of sthavara.
Revatinandana: So we don't actually discriminate between the tree, and say, the atom, as a living entity.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Revatinandana: Haribol. Little by little it's becoming clear.
Prabhupada: Sthavara, sthavara means one cannot move, standing. Sthavara-jangama. There are two kinds of living entities. One moving, one not moving.
Yogesvara: But the atom is always in motion. The atoms and molecules are always constantly moving.
Prabhupada: That movement is different. That is not independent movement.
Yogesvara: Is that to say that a stone has a living entity in it?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Revatinandana: Actually what we discussed is that every, even the elements, the atoms, everything is made of nothing but spirit souls in fallen conditions. Because everything comes from brahmajyoti, which is nothing but spirit souls, and brahmajyoti... Therefore soul never changes. So this manifestation is from brahmajyoti. Therefore, it is made of souls. It is nothing else but spirit souls. Yesterday, a few days ago we discussed that.
Prabhupada: It is simply covered by another energy which is called material energy. And that is maya. Maya means that is not actual, not factual. The example is given, just like the sun is covered by the cloud. The cloud is nothing but another creation of sun. But when the cloud comes, sun is invisible. Similarly this condition, forgetfulness, is my creation and when I am covered by this forgetfulness I become stones and atoms, like that.
Hamsaduta: In Bhagavad-gita, it says that the soul is immovable. In the Second Chapter there is a verse that says the soul is immovable.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Hamsaduta: What does that mean exactly? Are we not moving? In that verse it says immovable and...
Prabhupada: Sthanu, means fixed up.
Hamsaduta: You mean its nature is...?
Prabhupada: Unchangeable.
Hamsaduta: Unchangeable. Not that we are not moving. We are moving.
Prabhupada: Might be that word was not properly used. Sthanu, the word is sthanu. If you have got Sanskrit, you know what is the meaning of sthanu. And acalo 'yam, acalo 'yam, yes.
Revatinandana: The point of all those...
Prabhupada: That means acalo 'yam also, so acalo 'yam. Acalo 'yam means that does not move. Sthanur acalo 'yam, in the Bhagavad-gita it is given. You can see. Now there is no time.
Revatinandana: It's time for class. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Pusta-krsna: Also, the other day, Srila Prabhupada, you were telling us in Geneva that in India it was, at least until the present day forbidden to eat cows, and that those who would eat animals, they would eat dogs or goats, like this.Prabhupada: Yes. We recommend the meat-eaters who eat dogs, as Korea, they're eating dogs, so you can eat also dog. But don't... You eat it. After death. We don't say don't eat. You are so much fond of eating. All right. You eat. Because after the death, we have to give somebody, some living entity. So generally, it is given to the vultures. So why to the vultures? Take the civilized men, who are as good as vultures. (laughter) The so-called civilized men. Yes. What is the difference between the vultures and these rascals? The vultures also enjoy a dead body. And they also kill, make it dead and enjoy. They're vultures.
Yogesvara: Sakuni.
Prabhupada: Yes. Sakuni, yes. They're vultures, and their civilization is vulture-eater. The animal-eaters, they're like jackals, vultures, dogs. They're similar to these animals, the animal-eaters. It is not human food. Here is human food. Here is civilized food, human food. Let them learn it. Uncivilized, rudes, vultures, raksasas, and they're leaders. Therefore, I say all fourth-class men, they are leaders. Therefore the whole world is in chaotic condition. We require first-class men to lead. We are first-class men. Take our advice, and then everything will be all right. We are creating first-class men. What is the use of fourth-class men leading? All fourth-class men. If I say so frankly, people will be very angry. All fourth-class men. Basically, they're all fourth-class men. Now, these first, second, third-class men are described. So at the present moment, no one belongs to this qualification. Even they are not to the third-class men. Krsi-go-raksya-vanijyam [Bg. 18.44]. Who is, who is protecting the cows? That is the third-class man's business. So therefore everyone is fourth-class. So the fourth-class men, they are electing their representative to govern. They are also on the big fourth-class men. That is stated in the Bhagavata, sva-vid-varahostra-kharaih samstutah purusah pasuh [SB 2.3.19]. Where is that verse? Find out. All fourth-class men. Not fourth-class, less than fourth-class. Fourth-class has got also some regulative duty. But at the present moment, no regulative duty. Anyone can do whatever he likes, whatever he thinks. All fifth-class, sixth-class men. No regulative principle. The human life is meant for regulative principles. Just like we are insisting our students only for regulative principles just to make them real human life. No regulative principle means animal life. Animal life. Tapasa brahmacaryena yamena niyamena... [SB 6.1.13] The yoga system is there. It is to learn the regulative principles, yamena niyamena va. The yoga system is very strict regulative principle. I do not know what they are doing. Generally, they misuse also that, but yoga means indriya-samyama, controlling the senses. That is real yoga system. Because as the animals, they cannot control their senses, similarly... So the human being, having higher intelligence, they should learn how to control the senses. This is human life. Human life means controlling. I give this example. Just like in the... In your country, there is no such shop. In our country, the confectioner's shop is on the roadside, very nice. You have seen in India. They have prepared very nice, nice preparation and exhibited. People come and purchase. So animals, cows, as soon as they take some opportunity, they push their head and take something. Get away. Now, the animal, the cow is passing, and a human being is also passing. But the human being, although he's hungry, he likes to take some of the preparation, but he'll not do like that animal. He knows that "I have no money. So I shall have to restrain my tongue." That is human being. The animal pushes the head. So anyone who cannot carry the regulative principles is animal. The law is for human being. "Keep to the left, keep to the right" for... This is not for the dogs. Dogs can keep to the right, keep to the left, anywhere. But he's not criminal. Because he's animal. But if a man, instead of keeping to the right, he goes to the left, immediately, he's criminal. Therefore human society means to abide first-class law. That is human being. The laws must be made for advancement of spiritual life. That is human society. Because animal life, it doesn't require any law. How to eat, it doesn't require any law. Everyone knows. Man knows, animal knows. How to have sex life, it is not to be educated. Everyone knows. But they are philosophizing on sex life. Freud. What is this Freud?
Yogesvara: Sigmund Freud.
Prabhupada: The rascal, what is there, philosophy? This philosophy everyone knows. And he's philosophizing.
Yogesvara: There was an article in this week's newspaper. Sigmund Freud's grand-daughter is now posing for naked pictures in magazines. She is saying, "My grandfather's philosophy was not so good." So now she is posing.
Prabhupada: He's ad... She's advanced. (laughter) She's more advanced. That's nice. (laughs) This is going on. Animals, simply animals in a different posture. That's all. Fourth-class, fifth-class men. And they are governing, they are leaders. Then what is that? Sva-vid-varahostra-kharaih.
Nitai:
sva-vid-varahostra-kharaih
samstutah purusah pasuh
na yat-karna-pathopeto
jatu nama gadagrajah
 [SB 2.3.19]
"Men who are like dogs, hogs, camels and asses praise those men who never listen to the transcendental pastimes of Lord Sri Krsna, the deliverer from evils."
Prabhupada: Yes. These electors are animals, and they elect animals. Just like Nixon. A big animal, and he was elected by other animals. And now there is struggle. (makes barking sound:) "Gow! Gow! Gow! Gow! Gow!" (laughter.) That's all. Is it not?
Pusta-krsna: It's true.
Prabhupada: Yes. He's a big dog, and the small dogs, they elected him. And now there is some trouble, and "Gow! Gow! Gow! Gow! Gow! Gow!" Samstutah purusah pasuh. He was praised by some animals. He's an animal, big animal, and he was praised by... That is stated here, sva-vid-varahostra-kharaih samstutah purusah pasuh. The so-called leaders, they are animals, and they are praised by other animals. That's all. Small animals. This is the civilization. How he is animal? Now na yat-karna..., karna-pathet, upeta...?
Nitai: Upetah.
Prabhupada: Ah. One who has not heard the message of Krsna, he's animal.
Nitai: Jatu nama gadagrajah.
Prabhupada: Jatu. What is...? Even for some time, they did not hear. Purport?
Nitai: "The general mass of people, unless they are trained systematically for a higher standard of life in spiritual values, are no better than animals, and in this verse they have been particularly put on the level of dogs, hogs, camels and asses. Modern university education practically prepares one to acquire a doggish mentality to accept the service of a greater master. Like the dogs, after finishing so-called education, the so-called educated persons move from door to door with applications for some service,..."
Prabhupada: At least, we have got this experience in India. There are so many unemployed, educated. Because they have been educated as dog, they must find out a master. Otherwise, they have no independent power to work. Dog, unless he finds out a very nice master, it is street dog, loitering in the street.
Bhagavan: There's a report that there's so many Ph.D's who are graduating from school now that there are not enough jobs for them. So they have to take jobs as truck-driver and taxi driver.
Prabhupada: Where?
Bhagavan: In the United States.
Prabhupada: Just see.
Pusta-krsna: And that is supposed to be the brahmana class too, the professors. They're the educated class of people.
Prabhupada: No, no. They are not brahmanas. Those who give education in exchange of money, they are not brahmanas. Just like we are lecturing, educated, educating people. We don't say that "Give us salary." We simply ask them, "Please come." Therefore we are making food. I'll give you food. I'll give you good seat. Please come and hear. We are not asking money, that "First of all pay the fees. Then you come and learn Bhagavad-gita." We never say so. So those, these so-called teachers, they first of all set up salary, "What salary you'll give me?" That is dog's business. That is not brahmana's business. Brahmana will never ask. Brahmana is eager to give lesson only. That's all. Brahmana is eager to see that people are educated. "Take free education and be educated. Be a human being." This is brahmana's business. I came here not to ask for any money. But I want to give lesson. This is brahmana's business.
Bhagavan: Today the priests are afraid to speak too strongly or else they will be fired and get no salary.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Bhagavan: Today the priests, they are afraid to speak.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Bhagavan: Or like the politicians, they are afraid to speak because they are afraid that they will be voted out or get no more money to support their...
Prabhupada: Yes. They're after money. So they are less than sudras. That is the cause that Christianity has fallen down, that they cannot speak straightly, or otherwise... It is straight commandment, "Thou shalt not kill." And because people are killing, they're... Now they are give man-to-man marriage, what to speak of other things. The priests, they are sermonizing this man-to-man marriage. Just see how degraded they have become. Whether any conception... At least, outside America, nobody knows that a man can be married with another man. What is this? And they're supporting it. You know that?
Bhagavan: Yes.
Prabhupada: So what is their standard?
Yogesvara: Did he say anything before he left?
Jyotirmayi: Yeah, he said that he was in the, he was promulgating a law. So I asked him if he was going to help promulgate a law against cow-killing. So he said...
Prabhupada: Now, this is our proposal, that why you should kill cow? Cow may be protected to take milk, and use this milk for so many nice preparations. Then, so far meat-eating is concerned, so every cow will die. It is a fact. So you wait a few days only. There will be so many dead cows. So you take all the dead cows and eat. So where is the bad proposal? If you say that "You are restraining us from meat-eating," no, we don't restrain you. We simply request you that "Don't kill. When the cow is dead, you eat it."
Pusta-krsna: Prabhupada, in the western countries now, the young people, when their parents grow old, they generally send them away to old age homes. So if they have no compassion even towards their own parents, that they would send them away, then how can we educate them to protect the cow which is just like mother if they're even willing to practically kill their parents?
Prabhupada: So there is no question of protecting. We shall protect. Simply we ask them that "Don't purchase meat from the slaughterhouse. We shall supply you the cow after his death." Where is the wrong?
Satsvarupa: Not enough meat.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Satsvarupa: Not enough meat fast enough, they're eating so much beef.
Prabhupada: No, fast, fast. Fast means you have to eat the cow's flesh. So how you can make it fast? The cows' number are the same. So it will remain the same. Simply you wait for the natural death. Where is the restriction? You have got a limited number of cows. Either you wait for the death, or you kill it at once, the number of cows are the same. So we simply request you that you don't kill them. Wait for the natural death and take it. What is the wrong? The number of cows is the same. You cannot increase it. Increase or decrease, the number of cows is there. So we simply request you that so long they're alive, let us take it's milk, and give nice foodstuff to the human society.
Yogesvara: If they don't kill it, they'll be even more cows.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yogesvara: If they don't kill the cow, then they will have even more meat, because then the cow will have more time to reproduce, more calves. If they don't kill the cow right away.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Yogesvara: There'll be even more cows.
Prabhupada: More cows. Yes. They'll have more cows. Simply we request that "Don't..." You propagate this. "Don't kill, don't maintain the slaughterhouse." It's very sinful. It has got very awkward reaction on the society. Stop this slaughterhouse. We don't say that you stop eating meat. You eat meat, but don't take it from slaughterhouse. Or don't by killing. Simply wait, and you'll get the... How long the cow will live? Their maximum age is twenty years. So not that you have to wait for twenty years. There are many cows, eighteen years, sixteen years or ten years. So wait for that much time. Then you regularly get dead cows and eat. What is the wrong? You make this propaganda. You may, for few years, may not get. By that time, you can eat some dogs and cats. (laughter) Yes. The Koreans, they are using dogs. Where is the difference between you and the Korean? You can eat also dogs for the time being. Or hogs. You eat hogs. We don't prohibit killing of these small animals. We don't sanction, neither prohibit. But especially we request cow protection because it is ordered by Krsna. Because we are Krsna conscious people, therefore we have to carry out the order of Krsna, go-raksya. That is our duty. And economically also, it is very useful. Krsna has recommended for nothing, it is not like that. It has some meaning, that if you have got cows. You see. They're... Our cows in New Vrindaban, they're giving more milk than other cows. Because they are confident that they'll not be killed here. They have got sense. Not like that rascal, "They have no soul. They have no sense." They have got sense. In other places, they do not give so much milk. But in New Vrindaban, they're so jolly, as soon as Kirtanananda Maharaja calls, they'll come. Yes, just like friends. And they are confident that "We'll not be killed." So they are jubilant, and they're giving much milk. Yes. So in Europe, the cows are also good, but the cow-killing system also very good. So you stop this. We simply request that, that you'll get the cow's flesh. As soon as it is dead, we shall supply you free of charges. You haven't got to pay four thousand pounds or four, this, or so much money. You get free and eat. And why you are killing? Stop this slaughterhouse. What is the wrong in this proposal? I think he could not give any counter-reasoning.
Bhagavan: He gave a proverb.
Prabhupada: Rather, he supported.
Bhagavan: Yes.
Prabhupada: So use this. This is one of the business. Krsi-go-raksya-vanijyam vaisya-karma svabhava-jam [Bg. 18.44]. We don't stop trade. We don't stop food, producing food grains. But we want to stop these killing houses. It is very, very sinful. Therefore in Europe, so many wars. Every ten years, fifteen years, there is a big war and wholesale slaughter of the whole human kind. And these rascals, they do not see it. The reaction must be there. You are killing innocent cows and animals. Nature will take revenge. Wait for that. As soon as the time is ripe, the nature will gather all these rascals, and club, slaughter them. Finished. They will fight amongst themselves, Protestant and Catholic, Russian and France, and France and Germany. This is going on. Why? This is the nature's law. Tit for tat. You have killed. Now you become killed. Amongst yourselves. They are being sent to the slaughterhouse. And here, you'll create slaughterhouse, "Dum! dum!" and killed, be killed. You know. You showed me?
Bhagavan: Yeah, French guillotine.
Prabhupada: You see. As soon as there is bell, the Roman Catholics began to kill the Protestants. So this is nature's law. You don't require to be sent to the slaughterhouse. You'll make your slaughterhouse at home. You'll kill your own child. Abortion. This is nature's law. What are these children being killed? They are these meat-eaters. They enjoyed. Now they are being killed by the mother. They do not know how nature is working. You must be killed. If you kill, you must be killed. That I've discussed in this now Caitanya-caritamrta. Where is Nitai?
Bhagavan: They kill the cow, which is a mother, and then sometimes they get, when their mother kills them.
Prabhupada: Yes. The mother becomes child and child becomes mother. That's all. Have you got transcription of the vyadha story?
Nitai: The...?
Prabhupada: Vyadha. The hunter, hunter story, recited by Caitanya Mahaprabhu?
Nitai: Which...?
Prabhupada: This twenty-fourth chapter, Madhya-lila.
Nitai: No, I don't think it's typed yet.
Prabhupada: What you have typed? Bring. That is Narada's instruction, how by killing, one becomes killed. That is there.
Yogesvara: Oh, Mrgari, the hunter.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yogesvara: Mrgari.
Prabhupada: Yes. If you... Mam... This meaning, the flesh, is Sanskrit word is mamsa. Mam. Mam means "me." And sa means "he." "I am killing this animal. I am eating. And he'll kill me and eat." This word is reminding that "You are killing this animal, and eating. So this animal will kill you and eat you." This is the meaning of mam sa. Mam sa khadati iti mamsa. "He'll be given the opportunity to kill you." And when the animal is sacrificed before the goddess Kali, this mantra is cited to the ear of the animal that "You are giving your life before goddess Kali. So next life you are getting the chance of human being." So he's promoted. Because he is being killed before the deity, goddess Kali, so he is elevated, and he's given the chance that "This man will become animal, and you'll kill him." So after understanding this mantra, who will be ready to kill another animal? This is the mantra. While sacrificing an animal, this is the mantra. The priest will say in the ear that "You, Mr. Goat, you are being killed before this goddess of Kali. So your benediction is that you have to undergo so many lives before coming to the human form of life, but because you are sacrificing, as a reward for this, you get immediately human life." So he's not loser. "And this man who is killing you, he'll become a goat like you, and you have the right to kill him." This is mantra.
Yogesvara: Mam sa.
Prabhupada: Mam sa. Mam sa khadati iti mamsa.
Nitai: That story begins on verse 220, and I only have up to 121 here. This is the most recent tape. She's probably typing it... She'll type it today or tomorrow.
Prabhupada: There these things are discussed.
Yogesvara: The story of Mrgari and...?
Prabhupada: In connection with that, I have discussed the animal killing. So all these meat-eaters, they are responsible for killing the innocent cows.
Bhagavan: Many people today are discussing this topic of reincarnation, but they don't understand the significance of the effects...
Prabhupada: How they'll understand, all dull-headed fools, rascals? Dressed like gentlemen, that's all. Tavat ca sobhate murkho yavat kincin na bhasate. A rascal fool is decorated so long, as long he does not speak. As long he'll speak, his nature will be revealed, what is he. This gentleman therefore did not stay long to expose himself. (laughter)
Bhagavan: That's intelligent.
Jyotirmayi: When this man left, he told me that there is a very, very, big actress. She's known all over the world. She's called Brigitte Bardot. And she's making propaganda now everywhere against slaughterhouses. So he said she's living around here, and we should meet her, and ask her to come and see you. So if she's here, we can try.
Prabhupada: This mayor, mayor...? This mayor?
Yogesvara: This man was explaining there's a very famous, beautiful actress. Her name is Brigitte Bardot, and she has become very popular now because she is trying to protect the animals. So she lives around here somewhere. He suggested that we contact her.
Bhagavan: What about him?
Yogesvara: He just wants to...
Prabhupada: What did he say about himself?
Jyotirmayi: It's when I asked him. I asked him: "So what are you going to do? Can you make a law against cow-killing?" So he said, "Oh... But there is this actress." Just give it, gave it to someone else to do.
Prabhupada: No, we have to make this propaganda because we are servant of Krsna. And Krsna orders, krsi-go-raksya-vanijyam [Bg. 18.44]. So we must take to agricultural work to produce food and give protection to the cows. And if there is excess product, we trade. This simple thing we must do. Therefore I'm anxious to take outside Paris this center. Our people should live there peacefully, produce food grains, give protection to the cows, and work hard. And if there is excess product, you can make money also. With ghee, you can start so many restaurants. That I have already... I have discussed on this point. We can make good money. We'll not be loser. Krsna conscious men, they'll be never loser by following the instruction of Krsna. They'll live comfortably without any material want, and tyaktva deham punar janma naiti [Bg. 4.9], and after leaving this body, go to, directly to God. This is also...
Yogesvara: We can produce food and ghee on the farm, and then bring it and make prasadam and sell it in the restaurant.
Prabhupada: Yes. No, we can open our own restaurant. Our own restaurant, that I have already suggested. You have not discussed?
Satsvarupa: Yes. We're preparing a letter to send to the whole society.
Prabhupada: Yes. We, suppose we make ghee there. We can make sandesa there. We can make rasagulla. We can make so many things, especially ghee. So open restaurant in any part of the city, and make nice kachoris, puri, halava and so many other things, juri,(?) and people will purchase it. They'll come and sit down. I've given all the... That every foodstuff is ready. You sit down. Whatever you like, you take. And this is our charge for one plate. Don't waste. Just like it is distributed. You take one, two, three, four, as much as you like. But don't waste. Don't waste. So so far for your eating sumptuously, the charge is set. Suppose this man eats only one cake and you eat four cakes. That does not mean we shall charge more.
Yogesvara: Same.
Prabhupada: Same charge. Same charge. You sit down, eat to your heart's content, be satisfied, and let him also eat. Don't waste. We supply. This is our program. Not that each time... Just like in hotel, each time a plate is brought, immediately a bill. Is it not? No. You sit down, eat to your satisfaction. Charge is the same.
Pusta-krsna: I think they will leave the restaurant with their pockets full of samosas. (laughter)
Prabhupada: That we shall not allow. That we shall not allow.
Bhagavan: You were telling us one time that in India, if a person has a mango orchard, you can come in if you're hungry and eat, but you cannot take any with you.
Prabhupada: Yes. Still, if you have got a garden, somebody says, "I want to eat some fruits." "Yes, come on. Take as much fruit as you like." But you cannot take it away. Any number of men can come and eat. They even do not prohibit the monkeys. "All right, let him come in. It is God's property." That is the system. That is mentioned in Bhagavata. If the animals like monkeys, they come to your garden to eat, don't prohibit. Let him. He's also Krsna's part and parcel. Where he will eat if you prohibit? It is very practical. I have got another. This is told by my father. My father's elder brother was keeping a cloth shop. My father also was keeping a cloth shop. So it is in the village. So my uncle, what he would do, that before closing the shop, he'll bring one, what is called...?
Bhagavan: A bowl?
Prabhupada: Bowl, big bowl. Or it is... What do you call, where you keep water?
Bhagavan: Pot.
Prabhupada: Basin, basin. So one basin full rice he will keep in the middle of the shop. And there are rats. So the rats will take the rice, and not cut even a single cloth. It is practical. Yes. They are also animals. Give them food. They'll not create any disturbance. Give them food. Yes. Because cloth are very costly. And there are rats. If one cloth is cut by the rat, then it is great loss. So to save from this loss, he'll put in a basin... Rice was nothing. Rice... In our childhood, we have seen, two anas per seer. That is with profit. You see. So one basin full rice, it doesn't cost even one ana. So by giving one ana worth food, he saves so many, hundreds of rupees cloth. Otherwise, if they're hungry, they'll cut it. Everyone has got obligation. Even the tiger. Even the tiger... One saintly person was in the jungle. His disciples said the tigers will never come and disturb in the asrama because the asrama head, they'll keep some milk little far away from the asrama, and the tigers will come and drink and go away. He'll call, "You tiger, come and take your milk here!" Just like we call the dogs. They'll come and take the milk and go away. And they'll never attack any inmates of the asrama. He'll say, amara ajni hana isko bolo naya (?): "They are my men; don't harm them." Yes. Tigers can be trained up. Just like dog. They are a dog species. More ferocious, that's all. More ferocious dog. That's all. So you can train them. I have seen in the World Fair. One man has trained... I think most of you have seen. One tiger and one lion. And he was playing with that tiger, lion, just like one plays with dog. They can be trained up. They can understand also that "This man loves me. He gives me food. He's my friend." They also appreciate. Just like this picture, you have seen, Haridasa Thakura? The big snake is going. The snake also knows that "He's saintly person. He may not be disturbed. Let me go away." And from reason also, isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese... [Bg. 18.61]. Krsna is everyone's heart. He's dictating. So Krsna can dictate to the animals, to the serpent, to the man, everyone. Such nice foodstuff. And mostly they are made of milk. These people, they do not know. They kill the cows and throw the milk away to the hogs. And they are proud of their civilization. Like jackals and vultures. Actually, Krsna consciousness movement will transform these uncivilized men to real civilization. Their civilization is now compact in masonry work, collecting stones and bricks and piling them. This much, their civilization. Actually, apasyatam atma-tattvam grhesu grha-medhinam [SB 2.1.2]. The explanation I gave this morning. They do not know what is atma-tattvam. Bahir-artha-maninah. The external feature, material nature, they're interested. These scientists, these philosophers, the man, they're simply interested in the external features. Internally, what is important, they do not know.
Pusta-krsna: You said, Prabhupada, about these restaurants, have people come, and invite them and give them everything. They can have wife, they can have family, they can have place to stay, nice food. Simply they have to be civilized.
Prabhupada: That's all.
Pusta-krsna: Everything is there.
Prabhupada: We do not deny anything. We simply request, "Be civilized, Krsna conscious." And this is practical; everyone is seeing this. We have got grhasthas, vanaprasthas, brahmacari, sannyasi. We have no such objection.
Yogesvara: I can remember now. When I was in college, there were so many groups trying to reform the young people, the Y.M.C.A, the church groups, so many different social-working groups, trying to make young people become more, not so restless, not so much wild, but no, nothing. Couldn't do a thing. I remember I used to go to school when I was in college once a week to take care of one young boy because he was making so much trouble. They asked if some student from the university would come to see with him and talk with him once a week, to go out and go to the park and so on. So I used to see him, and he would be in school, and when I would come, all of the children would be the same way. I couldn't distinguish him from the others. They were all wild. And then they said, "Oh, he's the one, there."
Prabhupada: Is there any other meeting?
Jyotirmayi: Yes. It will be later. It will be at six-fifteen, in forty-five minutes. The man coming, will be a psychiatrist.
Satsvarupa: So we can take your leave until then.
Pusta-krsna: Jaya. All glories to Srila Prabhupada Hari-haribol. (devotees pay obeisances.)
Pusta-krsna: Should I distribute this to the devotees?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Bhagavan: Maybe we should save some for the next guest who comes.
Prabhupada: Or you keep it for the guest, and devotees may take down. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Dr. Inger: I was hoping, many years since I went to London to the Hare Krishna center there...,Prabhupada: Oh, you have been in our temple?
Dr. Inger: Many times, yes. And I had followed the booklets that came, Back to Godhead, also read. I didn't get, I didn't have a copy of the Bhagavatam, but I read your translations...
Prabhupada: You are Indian?
Dr. Inger: Yes, I'm an Indian. I have been working a long time in Paris. I am a resident more or less in Paris. I work for UNESCO, and I'm a writer. I go backwards and forwards a lot to India. But my headquarters have been here for a long time. So I'm associated...
Prabhupada: How long you are here?
Dr. Inger: In France, I've been twenty-five years.
Prabhupada: Oh, I see. And wherefrom you came?
Dr. Inger: Punjab.
Prabhupada: Punjab.
Dr. Inger: Before it was divided into two.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes, yes.
Dr. Inger: Before the...
Prabhupada: Which district.
Dr. Inger: Yes.
Prabhupada: Which district?
Dr. Inger: Lahore.
Prabhupada: Lahore.
Dr. Inger: Lahore.
Prabhupada: Lahore City proper.
Dr. Inger: Yes. I taught there. And then, of course, it was divided, and, before that, I came here and joined.
Prabhupada: I went to Lahore sometimes.
Dr. Inger: I see.
Prabhupada: In 1925. There, in Lahore, there is, there were many Bengalis.
Dr. Inger: Oh yes. Yes.
Prabhupada: So one Bengali gentleman, he was Mr. Mitha, they were physician. So I became his guest. They were very well-to-do men. They were living therefore two, three generations. Mithi family.
Dr. Inger: I see. There was also some man called Birmitha. Was he the same? Bir...
Prabhupada: I, I...
Dr. Inger: Perhaps...
Prabhupada: I forget the name.
Dr. Inger: Yes, there were quite a number of Bengalis there.
Prabhupada: Yes, yes, yes.
Dr. Inger: Long time ago.
Prabhupada: Long time ago. I went there in 1925. I was going to Kashmir. On my way I stopped in Lahore, Amritsar, and some other places.
Dr. Inger: Yes, and yes, and then, you came first to Europe about six years ago?
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes.
Dr. Inger: Yes, that's right. That's when... It was about a year after that I, or two years, that I went to London. And then saw the, saw there several times. And then, of course, been reading books. Here, too, I came across some people. When it first started, it was in Boulevard Raspail. Then it went to Fontenay Aux Rose.
Yogesvara: He's been following our movement here in Paris as well.
Dr. Inger: Yes, yes. I met a few. In fact the, this young Spaniard who showed us up, I saw him when he was selling a few things in the Drug Store. Yes. You know. Malas and other stuff.
Bhagavan: So now we are much bigger.
Dr. Inger: Yes, yes. Of course. And...
Prabhupada: You have seen all our books?
Dr. Inger: No, no. I have only seen a few in London.
Prabhupada: Why don't you show our books. Show him?
Dr. Inger: I haven't seen the new ones. I have seen the...
Prabhupada: Bring all the books.
Devotee: Srimad Bhagavatam? [break]
Prabhupada: These books have been produced within six years.
Dr. Inger: Really!
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Inger: Fantastic. I do not know how. So much work, incredible!
Prabhupada: I work at night, writing books. My work is going on. At night, I write. [break] In the UNESCO, to understand God or spiritual life, they do not think it a necessary?
Dr. Inger: Well, that's a very, very important question. I think that the real trouble is that all of them are bureaucrats, sitting in offices, creating more jobs for other officers. I was one of the earliest members. I came when Dr. Radhakrishnan was the, was our president. And... At the very early stage. In those days, there was that feeling, that some importance should be given, but because it became a governmental organization, because every religion thinks that they should have a part to play in it, what they did was, they brought out, in ten volumes, a scientific and cultural history of mankind. But it has, it's only incidentally philosophy, only incidentally religion. The only religious books that have come out are those that have been translated. Old books like the second book to the East, for instance. Max Muller's books. And they have been reprinted. And occasionally a few translations have been done from Tulasidasa or some other philosophers, rewritten, like Sankara later on. But, but all of those have been done because somebody else has commissioned them. But otherwise, there isn't... Except they have had some meetings in various placed. But at none of these meetings do they really discuss the problem that of the, well occasional people, occasional philosophers, they never really discuss that. I think because the word, religion, I think probably is the stumbling block...
Prabhupada: No, apart from religion. Religion may be sentiment or some emotion. That is another thing.
Dr. Inger: Yes.
Prabhupada: But we can ask what is this cosmic manifestation, what is the purpose of this, who created, how it is created. Are they not scientific?
Dr. Inger: Yes. Now this is another problem. Everything of a philosophical kind, they call it science, human sciences, natural sciences, moral sciences. They think that is a fault(?) to satisfy scientific spirit. I think from that point of view, they allow big conferences to be held where a particular theme is taken, different people come. So the organization encourages, stimulates activities proposed, submitted and finally passed in resolutions by different commissions and different countries. And then it's held. And at that particular time, some people come and speak. So they have had... But they haven't... Mostly these meetings have been held and... Very few have been held here, except when they celebrated the tintinary(?) of Aurobindo, last year. Or when they celebrated the centenary of, another centenary of Ramakrishna. Like that. But not always.
Prabhupada: Not Krsna.
Dr. Inger: They haven't. Not so far. Because from their point of view they have to prove the dates, historical dates, how many centuries, and so forth.
Prabhupada: It is there in the sastras.
Dr. Inger: I know. But so... If one can put it that way, then somebody has to submit that we are going to celebrate the three thousand anniversary, or four thousand anniversary, and... But no such step has been taken. But such an idea can be proposed.
Prabhupada: No, suppose the United Nations is the organization of the whole human society, so if I ask the United Nations, as an organization that: "What is the purpose of this cosmic manifestation?" That is a fact. There is a cosmic manifestation. The scientists, they are also trying to understand. So there are so many scientists, philosophers, what is their answer? Suppose I am inquisitive to know something. So where shall I inquire?
Dr. Inger: Now if you were to inquire from... Because the only organization which deals with culture, therefore philosophy, therefore religion, therefore art, therefore music, is UNESCO Paris. Not New York. And if you did put such a question, you would get some kind of reply from one of the directors who says: "We, we... Such a proposal has not been made. But if such a proposal is made, let us say, presented, by any member state, out of the hundred and twenty-six or twenty-seven member states, and it is submitted to the general conference where it meets in session, two years in October, and is passed through, we will be able..." Now usually what happens is one country presents it and if the, and what it means in terms of expense, how much, how many people are going to be invited, and what is going to be the plan. And if that is done, they would say: "Yes, I think such a study has to be made." And it's possible to make it.
Prabhupada: A sectarian question.
Dr. Inger: No, no, no. It won't be.
Prabhupada: It is... Why it should be presented to Partha-sarathi. Even American representative or English representative or French representative, any representative can do...
Dr. Inger: Because being a governmental organization, the only kind of reply one would get from such a question would be a very polite and courteous one, but it wouldn't have... No action would be taken. Action can only be taken, if it is governmentally presented. That is the only problem. There are many ideas which come forward, boundless ones, but the people need to present them officially. And... [break]
Prabhupada: ...your position there?
Dr. Inger: Well, now I am a consultant. I used to be a regular member of the staff for a long time. Now I do certain projects for them, and I'm a visiting professor, and I'm a writer, visiting professor at different universities. So I'm connected with, with UNESCO in a way that I can not be now a permanent member of the staff which I was... [break]
Prabhupada: ...purpose is not to propose only. Because I wish that there are so many scient..., scientific men, philosophers and thoughtful men... Suppose even if I ask you, what is your answer, that what is the purpose...? The cosmic manifestation is there, the universe is there, and there are innumerable planets within this universe, and they are very organizely kept. Everything is nicely going on. The sun is rising in due time. The moon is rising in due time. The seasons, seasons are changing. There is nice organization. So is it not a bona fide inquiry to, "What is the purpose of this organization?"
Dr. Inger: Well, the purpose is to understand oneself in relation to the cosmos.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Inger: And therefore everything else is valueless if it has no relation to the total.
Prabhupada: No, relation is already there because, as the sun is part of this cosmos, I'm also one of the parts. So why the sun is made and why I am also made? What is this purpose? That is my question.
Dr. Inger: There's a discovery of...
Prabhupada: Yes. The relation is already there.
Dr. Inger: The discoveries...
Prabhupada: Because I am part of this creation. Now why I am created a man, another is created an elephant, another is created Brahma, another is created ant, another is created...? So many. Why this is?
Dr. Inger: The purpose of life?
Prabhupada: Yes. I, I, I, I don't think anyone has thought over this matter.
Dr. Inger: It certainly needs to be...
Prabhupada: But there is. There are so many philosophers, scientists... Why do they not try to think of it? What is this purpose?
Dr. Inger: Well, some have tried to talk about the purpose of existence that we are little entities of no significance. Some... Because...
Prabhupada: No. My question is why you have become a little entity, another has become big entity?
Dr. Inger: Some people would say that it is due to our past. Past connections or reincarnations.
Devotee: Karma.
Dr. Inger: karma.
Prabhupada: So. Yes, karma...
Dr. Inger: Exactly. What we have gone through. We are the, we are the result of our past actions.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is a fact. That is a fact. Because we get all this information from Vedic literature. Karmana daiva netrena [SB 3.31.1]. You understand Sanskrit?
Dr. Inger: Little bit.
Prabhupada: Yes. Karmana daiva netrena jantor deha upapattaye. A living entity is getting body by, as a result of his karma. And supervised by higher authority. Now when we speak of karma, or result of karma, there must be somebody who will judge. Just like one has stolen something, and the magistrate is judging the karma, the criminal activity, and he's putting him either in the prison house or getting him released. "No, he's not culprit." So as soon as we speak of karma, there must be somebody else to judge. And that judgement is said: daiva netrena. Daiva means divine supervision. So what is that divine supervision? Next question immediately comes. As soon as you accept karma, and the resultant action, and it is supervised by the divine authority, then next question will be: what is that divine authority? In this way, we have to go forward. So that sort of education is nowhere in the world.
Dr. Inger: No. Not here, in any case.
Prabhupada: No, here, or India, or everywhere.
Dr. Inger: Yes. Nobody is...
Prabhupada: So that means people have become so dull in spite of so-called education.
Dr. Inger: That is true.
Prabhupada: That's, that's my point.
Dr. Inger: Oh yes. Education is merely book knowledge.
Prabhupada: Mudha.
Dr. Inger: ...of substance given, read, prepared.
Prabhupada: That's all.
Dr. Inger: They don't go to the basic.
Prabhupada: Srama eva hi kevalam. That is described in the Srimad-Bhagavatam as simply wasting time. That's all.
dharmah svanusthithah pumsam
visvaksena-kathasu yah
notpadayed ratim yadi
srama eva hi kevalam
 [SB 1.2.8]
Srama eva hi kevalam. Everyone is acting. Dharmah svanusthithah. According to Vedic civilization, there are four divisions of men. brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra, and further, spiritual divisions, brahmacari, grhastha, vanaprastha, sannyasa. So everyone has got some duty according to his position. So Bhagavata says that even a person executes his duty very perfectly, but if he does not awaken his Krsna consciousness, then all that he has done is simply a waste of time. So our point is that the UNESCO, United Nations, UNO, they're simply wasting their time. From practical point of view, they're unable to do anything. Because the original idea was to stop war. But the war is going on, fighting is going on. They could not stop it. And United Nations... But actually they are becoming disunited more and more. Pakistan was not there. You know very well. Lahore was your country. Now it is other's country. So in this way, there cannot be any solution. There cannot be any solution. We must know the central point. The central point is Krsna. We get from... I'm not manufacturing these ideas. Bhagavad-gita is recognized book. There it is stated that:
bhoktaram yajna-tapasam
sarva-loka-mahesvaram
suhrdam sarva bhutanam
jnatva mam santim rcchati
 [Bg. 5.29]
If, actually, anyone wants santi, peace, he must know these three things: The Lord, Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He is the enjoyer, bhokta. What is called? Beneficiary? Yes. Because He's the owner. Sarva-loka-mahesvaram. And He's friend of everyone. Suhrdam-sarva-bhutanam. Jnatva, knowing this, mam, Me, Krsna says, santim rcchati, there is santi. There is santi. Otherwise, this, this so-called conference, and big, big office, big, big salary, big, big officers, it will never be successful.
Dr. Inger: Quite. And this basis, which is the essence of everything.
Prabhupada: Three things only.
Dr. Inger: Yes. That is one thing they want to avoid.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is their nonsense.
Dr. Inger: In other words, everything else is a plan or an excuse to escape from yourself.
Prabhupada: That means it is a association of cheaters and cheated. Somebody wants to cheat and somebody's being cheated. That's all. That is our opinion. So how the association of cheaters and cheated can do anything good to the human society? They're cheaters. They do not know how this peace has to be attained, and they're trying to attain peace in their own way. Therefore they're cheaters. You do not a subject matter, how to do it, and you're trying to do it, that means you are cheater. It may be very strong words, but the fact is there. Why should you try something which you do not know adequately? That is our protest.
Dr. Inger: Well, many people would say that the use of the intellect alone, which is an excuse for not going deep into oneself, is the technique that is used. What can be rationally explained, only rationally explained, is what matters.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Inger: Anything where, something beyond reason, call it intuition...
Prabhupada: Yes, it is quite reasonable. When... [break]
Prabhupada: Everything... In this table, whatever is there, it is created. The table is created. The light is created. Everything is created by somebody. So how I can deny this fact, that somebody has created the whole universe? If you say, "It has comes automatically, dropped," that is rascaldom. It must be accepted somebody has created. So who is that somebody? You have not created. The Americans have not created, the Englishmen have not created, or I have created, you have created, but we can understand that somebody has created. So who will be the proprietor? I shall be proprietor or the creator shall be proprietor? Who shall be the proprietor?
Dr. Inger: Creator. Of course.
Prabhupada: Creator. So why you are claiming other's property as "my own"? "This is my country. This is my country." And we are so rascal and we are making United Nation.
Dr. Inger: It doesn't belong to anyone.
Prabhupada: It doesn't belong to anyone. And these rascals are claiming, "This is my. This is my, this is my flag. This is..." Therefore they are all cheaters. And they are combining and trying to cheat other that "How much I can cheat you." "I am American. How much I can cheat you, Russian." Russian thinking, "Yes, I am also cheater. How much I can cheat you." This is going on, cheaters and cheated. And they are wasting their time. Is that civilization, to become cheater and cheated and waste our time in some so-called conferences? Is that civilization, do you think?
Dr. Inger: No. Not at all, but that's exactly as you say.
Prabhupada: American, they cheated the Red Indians. They got the land. Now they are claiming, "It is my land." But where you got this land? You have cheated the Red Indians, and you claim now it is your land. "Nobody should come here." Everywhere that is there it belongs to... Napoleon, he thought, "France is mine." France is there. Where he has gone, the proprietor? Yes. And with this idea he fought so much. Now nobody knows what he has become, where he is living, either in France or in hell, maybe in heaven. But there are so many places and so many forms of life. And our Bhagavad-gita says, tatha dehantaram praptih. Just like I am now in this body. Child is in this body. So all of us sometimes were in this body, childish. So where is that body? That body is not existing. But I am existing; you are existing. You know that you had such a body. You were also playing like this child. I also remember. So the body is not existing. I am existing. So I have got a different body now. So where is the difficulty to under-stand that when this body is also finished I get another body? Where is the difficulty? And Bhagavad-gita says, tatha dehantaram praptih. As we are changing from one body to another, another, another, even within our experience, similarly, as soon as this body is finished, I get another body. Now I am working in this body as national, as Napoleon, as Gandhi, as you according to our own whims and ideas, and fighting in the UNESCO, everything, just like recently Pakistan representative, India... But as soon as the body is finished, just like Gandhi finished, Jinnah finished, now what kind of body he has got now? May not be Indian or Pakistani. Now in that body he is thinking according to his body, a dog is thinking according to the doggish body. A man is thinking according to the man's body. So thinking and everything is changed with the change of the body. Just like this child is. This child, she cannot concentrate because due to the body. Other gentlemen, ladies, they can concentrate. So she has to get a different body to have a different mentality. So in other words, with the change of the body the mentality changes. So in this body I am thinking of France, and if my next body, it is not in France or is not human, I will think otherwise. So the whole duration of my life which I thought in one way, that is simply wasted. Simply wasted. They do not know. This knowledge is lacking. There is no such knowledge in the university, any education, nothing. Simply they are wasting time. Simply. They have no perfect knowledge. They are wasting their time, and doing something just like childish, and going on as advanced in civilization, and so on, so on, so on. Now they should think. Simply on some utopian ideas they should not go. They should know, "What is the purpose of life, what is our connection with this cosmic manifestation, if... There must be some creator. Who is that creator? What is my relation with Him?" These... There are so many things. But they are neglecting. And still, they are passing on as scientist, as philosopher, as politicians and leaders.
Dr. Inger: That's the worst of governments you see, because they stand, as You said rightly each for himself.
Prabhupada: Whatever it is, we are discussing this point, that this illusion is going on. But human form of life, a human being can get out of this illusion. We have got sufficient sources of knowledge, especially in the Vedic knowledge. So why do we not take advantage of this knowledge and make our life successful? Yes. That is my proposal. And we are struggling with this Krsna consciousness movement with this purpose only, that these people are missing the point and wasting their time and life unnecessarily under some illusion. To try to save them, that is our Krsna consciousness movement. [ ...talked with so many Christian priests. Naturally while discussing I asked them that "In your Bible it is said, 'Thou shall not kill.' Why you are maintaining slaughterhouse?" They cannot answer properly. In this way and this way they try to avoid and support this slaughterhouse.
Dr. Inger: It's difficult to answer it.
Prabhupada: This is going on.
Dr. Inger: When I asked a group of priests at a meeting which was to celebrate the anniversary of a leading Catholic thinker, I.R. Shadder(?), I just asked him about the Sermon on the Mount, referring to similarities between the teachings of Sermon on the Mount and Hindu thought. He says, "You see, but the point is this, that the Sermon on the Mount is not meant for everybody. It is only meant for a very few. And therefore most of us, including the present company," he said, "cannot use it in everyday life." I said, "Do you mean it is only meant for monks?" He hesitated but said, "If you like, yes." But I said, "I imagined that this was meant for everyone and that anyone could follow it." And he said, "Well, it is too dangerous a teaching to give to everyone."
Prabhupada: Just see. And therefore I say, "Cheater and cheated." Yes. Similarly, scientists also. Recently in Los Angeles, California University, one professor, a big scientist came. He's a Nobel Prize owner. He described, gave lecture. He has written one book, on which he has got Nobel Prize, Evolution of Chemicals. He wants to prove by chemical, combination of chemical, life has come into existence. That is his theory, like Darwin's theory, that life is from matter or chemical. So after hearing the lecture, there is a professor also, a student, yes. He is also Doctor of Chemistry. He is my disciple. He inquired that "If I give you all these chemicals, whether you can produce life?" At that time he said, "That I cannot say." Just see. He is proposing that "From these chemicals, life has begun," and when he is questioned whether by supplying these chemicals he can produce a life, he said, "That I cannot say." This is going on. Then what is the... Then, if you cannot say, then why you are saying that from these chemicals life has come? So when they are caught up for practical purposes, they'll deny. And they are passing on as philosopher, as scientist, priest, and these things. Just see. (someone comes in) What is that?
Hamsaduta: This is your visa. It's been extend...
Guru-gauranga: I just came back from the airport, and they made it good.
Hamsaduta: It's been extended up until the 16th.
Bhagavan: Prabhupada will be here till the 16th, so if you would like to come back, if you would like to bring some friends...
Dr. Inger: Yes, I would most certainly like to come back if I may. What is the best time?
Bhagavan: About three to four in the evening.
Prabhupada: In the evening at four.
Dr. Inger: All right. I would like to bring Chauhan(?) and two other men.
Bhagavan: You can bring as many as you like.
Yogesvara: We have a very great interest in having people with something to say, some ability to respond to the philosophy of Krsna consciousness, come and confront our movement.
Dr. Inger: Yes, I gathered from the papers that you had had Jean Danielou.
Yogesvara: Cardinal Danielou. Yes, that meeting has already taken place. That was yesterday with the cardinal. He read in the newspaper that it was going to take place. Where did you read that?
Dr. Inger: Yes. In Le Monde, yesterday. Because Cardinal Danielou has brother called Alec.
Yogesvara: This is the Vedic writer, the cardinal's brother.
Dr. Inger: Yes, he was never (indistinct) he did a lot of translation work, studies in Madras. So then...
Yogesvara: Is this the article?
Dr. Inger: Yes, this is the article. It says right here. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Hari-sauri: But how can they take it that what we're doing is a bad thing. If we're training people how to avoid intoxication, how to avoid illicit sex, abortion, contraception.Prabhupada: They say, "Why you should avoid? This is life. Why you are brainwashing?" One boy was there in the beginning. What was his name? Ranchor, his name, I gave him. So his father argued, "Why you are avoiding illicit sex? This is life! Why you are afraid? I'll give you car. I'll give you girls. You enjoy. What is this philosophy, nonsense philosophy." His father was arguing. I think everyone's father argues like that. Lord Roland said, he said, "Why you are prohibiting this thing? This is our life. It is impossible."
Hari-sauri: The thing is in society still, even now, there are people who abstain from it. There are vegetarians.
Prabhupada: There may be very few, one or two. That is insignificant. One million, two person, he is. At least especially in your country.
Hari-sauri: The thing is that they don't claim that they are brainwashed. So we're a society where we're doing all these things, combinedly.
Prabhupada: "It is folly to be wise where ignorance is bliss." If the majority are fools and rascal, if you say something sane, then they'll ask... The man, the sane man, he is insane. He's crazy.
Hari-sauri: Then how to fight them?
Prabhupada: That is the position. The only means is that in spite of all opposition we have to chant Hare Krsna. That will cleanse. Otherwise there is no other way. Argument and logic, they have no brain to understand. It requires this transcendental method, ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12], by chanting Hare Krsna. That is wanted. You have to chant Hare Krsna and let them give the chance to hear. Then they will be able to catch it, what we are saying, not directly. It is not possible.
Hari-sauri: Then how are we going to fare in this court case? 'Cause in these court cases it's a question of presenting one side against the...
Prabhupada: No, philosophy is there. Court case means there is philosophy, there is logic. So for that we have got so many books. We can... But general mass of people, chanting. When there is court case we are prepared to defend. We have got... We are not fools. We can talk that what is the aim of life. They cannot say anything. The transmigration of the soul, the aim of life which we are discussing in our book, that's fact. How he can deny the transmigration of the soul from one body to another? And if that is accepted, the whole problem is solved. He does not know what kind of life he is going to get. Therefore they do not accept this philosophy. If once accepted, then next question -- "What kind of life we are going to get, either to become a tree or a dog or human being?" What arrangement you have done that you will get next life human being? Then the pious and impious activities comes one after another. The basic principle they are denying. "After this body is finished, everything is finished." Bhasmi bhutasya dehasya punar agama...(?) "The body will be burned into ashes, and where is life? Who is coming? Who is going? That's all." They do not see the soul. Their medical science cannot find out where is soul. How do they say the... The soul means intelligence, they say. Otherwise how do they say the animal has no soul? Why do they say? What is the... "Man has soul," they say. "The animal has no soul."
Jagadisa: That's what the Christians say. The Christians say.
Prabhupada: So what is the symptom?
Hari-sauri: Well, they... 'Cause he, man, has reason and logic.
Prabhupada: That means reason and logic is soul. That is their idea. That is not soul. Intelligence, when I say, "You have got intelligence," it does not mean you are intelligence. "You have got intelligence," we say like that. We never say, "You are intelligence." So intelligence is not soul. The rascals, they do not know. Mistake. Nobody says, "You are intelligence." They say, "You are intelligent."
Hari-sauri: Intelligence is something you possess.
Prabhupada: Yes. Hare Krsna. So? [break]
Hari-sauri: "Brainwashing: clearing the mind of established ideas by persistent suggestion and indoctrination."
Prabhupada: (chuckles) That is... We are doing that. They are under the impression, "Work hard, earn money, and enjoy life." We say, "No. Don't work hard for sense gratification but work hard for self-realization." Indoctrine.
Hari-sauri: Well, any form of education is indoctrination.
Prabhupada: Indoctrinization. Yes. Any kind of education is...
Hari-sauri: Whatever you teach someone, you teach according to whatever you see as the correct value.
Prabhupada: Yes. The child goes to the school. His brain is packed up: "I shall play all day." He likes to play but it is indoctrinization that "No, you should read. You must become graduate."
Hari-sauri: Yes. And whatever country he's born in, he has to learn the culture of that country, he's indoctrinated.
Prabhupada: Apart from that, education is required. The child wants to play but we have to educate him that "No, play is not all. You have to be educated." Similarly, this animal life, eating, sleeping, mating, this is already there. No. We say, "Not only this, you have to realize God." This kind of brainwash is required. If we do not understand God, then what is the difference between you and dog? He knows how to eat, how to sleep. He doesn't require any high education how to eat. Everyone knows how to eat, how to use sex. Nobody requires any university education.
Hari-sauri: Simply ignorance.
Prabhupada: When the animal enjoy sex, they know which part of the body has to be used.
Hari-sauri: They don't have to be taught.
Prabhupada: There is no need of education. He knows it. And these rascals, they are presenting Freud's philosophy, sex. Just see how they are wasting time.
Hari-sauri: They have so many books now on so-called sex education, so many of them.
Prabhupada: Simply wasting time. There is a story about this. One man was canvassing, hawking. Hawker?
Hari-sauri: Yes, hawker.
Prabhupada: So he was, "Here is a book of cow protection, cow protection." He has written one book to take care of the cows. So one old man called him, "What you are selling?" Now, "I am selling this book." "What is that book?" "Maintaining the cow." So, "Why you are selling? First of all give this book to your mother because you are no better than cow, so she will learn how to give you protection." That means he wanted to impress upon him that "Cow protection doesn't require any education. You have written a book? So you are such a rascal, cow intelligence. Better give this book to your mother. She will maintain you. Don't sell it. Everyone knows how to give cow protection." So similarly, this sex literature, there is no need of sex literature. Sex literature is there in Sanskrit also. That is how to restrict sex. For what purpose one should indulge in sex, that is called Kama-sastra. I have seen this Freud philosophy became so prominent that sometimes in the year... 1940's maybe. So one young woman was traveling, and another young man was traveling. So they began to discuss about sex very openly. And both of them unknown. Still, they engaged themselves in discussing the sex literature, without any shame.
Hari-sauri: Pseudo-intellectuals. Shameless.
Prabhupada: Yes. Young boy, young girl, they began to discuss on sex openly as scientific.
Hari-sauri: What is this scientific?
Prabhupada: Scientific means after discussing for some time you propose that "Let us enjoy sex." That's all. It is common thing in your country, unknown girl, unknown boy, and talk for some time, "Let us go to some restaurant," and then talk more intimately, and then sex.
Hari-sauri: That's the whole social system.
Prabhupada: "Would you like to sex?" And who is the young man, young... They'll deny it. I know this. During ball dance they embrace one another, another's wife, another husband, and in ball dance... Or there are side rooms. Naturally they'll feel sex and they go to the side room and discuss. Is it not?
Devotee: Yes.
Hari-sauri: The only reason they go to a dance is to pick up some woman for sex life. That's all.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Hari-sauri: Most of my friends used to go out specifically to find some woman to have sex.
Prabhupada: This dancing club means this. (end)
