Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Bhagavan: They are getting cheated from all sides. The scientists are cheating them...Prabhupada: No, they want to be cheated. What can be done? Ye yatha mam prapadyante [Bg. 4.11]. Just like the advertisement, "No faith, no philosophy, no restriction." You want all these things; therefore he has come to cheat you: "Yes. No regulation. You can do whatever you like." And then he will praised, "Oh, he is good, good swamiji. He has no restriction. And here is a most conservative swamiji. 'Don't do this. Don't do this. Don't do this.' " They want to be cheated. As soon as you speak the truth they will not accept. They will argue. What is the wrong in illicit sex? Why he's restricting? This is the... They go to guru to teach the guru, not to take lesson from the guru. What is that?
Madhavananda: ...thinks that they have some responsibility in the world, and if you say all of a sudden that "You have no responsibility..."
Prabhupada: That is stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, that "Yes, you have responsibility so long you are not Krsna conscious," not that a person who is not in the devotional service of the Lord, he can say, "I have no responsibility." He cannot say.
Bhagavan: Duty.
Prabhupada: He cannot. He has all the duties. But one who has taken to Krsna consciousness without any reservation, he has no duty. He has no respons...
devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitrnam
nayam rni na kinkaro rajan
sarvatmana ye saranam saranyam
gato mukundam parihrtya kartam
 [SB 11.5.41]
This is the statement. As soon as we take birth, we have got so many responsibilities. We are responsible to perform sacrifices for all the demigods. You are taking light from the sun. You have got responsibility. Otherwise how you are getting so much light? If you don't pay the electric bill, the next day it will be disconnected. And you are taking so much light from the sun. You have no responsibility? You have. "No, there is no responsibility. You are taking light, air, water. So many things you are taking, supplied by the different demigods. Deva, rsi, rsi, great... Just like Vyasadeva or many other rsis, they have given you knowledge, and you have no responsibility? You have responsibility.
Madhavananda: Then the responsibility for some is to Krsna; the responsibility of some is to the demigods?
Prabhupada: Yes. Demigods, you have got responsibility. Deva, rsi, bhuta, living entities. Just like you are taking milk from the cows. You have the responsibility to protect it, but you are killing. So you must suffer.
Bhagavan: So the present system is simply expert at producing completely irresponsible people.
Prabhupada: Yes. And they are talking of responsibility. But one who is devotee... Eh?
Bhagavan: They say we are irresponsible.
Prabhupada: No, we are not irresponsible. We have finished all responsibility. We are not irresponsible. But we are in such a position that we have passed all these responsibilities.
Madhavananda: So, Srila Prabhupada, when you told this lady, this woman last night, that she should give up her responsibilities...
Prabhupada: Take to Krsna consciousness. That is the only respons... Then you can... Not that you give up all responsibility. First of all take to Krsna responsibility. Then there is no responsibility. Give up something; take something. Then it is all right. And give up everything and then you zero.
Brahmananda: But they see responsibility only in terms of making a bank balance and having a nice home and satisfying our...
Prabhupada: Therefore they are suffering. In spite of bank balance, they are suffering.
Harikesa: (whispering) ...finding it impossible on that side. Excuse me. [break]
Prabhupada: ...said, suppose you have not done your responsibility properly, so then you have become sinful. Hm? Is it not? So Krsna gives assurance that "You surrender to Me, and I give you protection from all sins." So even you think that "By giving up my all other responsibilities I am taking shelter of You. Then I will be punishable for my sinful act," so Krsna says, aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami [Bg. 18.66]. Then where is my responsibility? I become free immediately, provided I surrender to Krsna without any reservations. Then. Then it is. Otherwise not.
Brahmananda: They will say that suffering is a part of life, that suffering is a necessary part of life.
Prabhupada: Then why you are trying to get out of suffering? Suffer, rascal. Why you are trying to get out of suffering. Why?
Brahmananda: Because they don't like it. But they say you have to accept it.
Prabhupada: Then, if you say... If it is a part of life, why don't you like it? Suffer. Go on suffering. You are accepting as part of life because you cannot get out of it. "The grapes are sour." That's all. After jumping, jumping, jumping, when it is not available, "Oh, the grapes are sour. It is no... There is no necessity." Jackal's philosophy.
Bhagavan: They will surrender to the misery, but they will not surrender to Krsna.
Prabhupada: That is their disease.
Yogesvara: Srila Prabhupada? When you speak of taking care of your responsibilities for Krsna, doesn't that also have a material aspect to it? Just like a parent must bring up the child, must take care of the child, train it to read, and to write, and so on...
Prabhupada: Yes. That means we are taking care of the children -- why? Just to make them Krsna conscious, not to become cats and dogs. This is our responsibility. That is Krsna conscious, that "Here is a child. He may be saved to make him Krsna conscious." Therefore we are taking so much care in the Dallas. We are not irresponsible. But our responsibility is there, that "Make him Krsna conscious."
Yogesvara: So when we say that we have finished all responsibility by surrendering to Krsna, that doesn't mean that we've abandoned execution of duty, does it?
Prabhupada: No, no. Who says that?
Yogesvara: Well, some people say that "You've taken to Krsna consciousness and now you have given up all of your..."
Prabhupada: It is not duty? This is the main duty. This is the main duty. Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam [Bg. 18.66]. We have taken responsibility for Krsna consciousness movement. We are doing. Why we are traveling all over the world thrice in a year? We have taken the responsibility. Otherwise, who is, an old man, he'll take such responsibility? That is a greater responsibility. When you become a big officer of the government, it means you overburdened with responsibility, not this flickering resp... Here the material respons... means it has no use. You are simply wasting time. And here is real responsibility and real life. That I explained to that lady, that "Even if you take respons... what can you do? You cannot do anything." The example I gave, that "You have taken responsibility for your son's disease. He is suffering. You have brought good physician, you have brought good medicine, everything, but what can you do? In spite of your all responsibility, your son dies. Then where is the value of your responsibility?" Do you think simply by bringing a nice physician and nice medicine you can save your son? Then where is your responsibility? Actually you cannot do anything, so what is the use of saying that "I am responsible"? You cannot do anything. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanah [SB 7.5.31]. If one blind man says, "I'll take responsibility. You all blind men follow me," so what is the use of this responsibility? He will die and others will die. So what is the meaning of this responsibility? Even if you take as very responsible man, you cannot do anything. That is not possible. You cannot save. Who wants that "My son dies, my father dies, and I'll take them and..."? But one little disease will finish your responsibi... Every nation is taken, all the leaders, and as soon as there is war, thousands and thousands will be killed. What responsibility? As soon as one atom bomb is dropped, then is many thousand will be finished. Then what is your responsibility? You cannot give. You can make a statue: "These soldiers died. These soldiers died." That's all. But you could not save them from death.
Madhavananda: Then they would say that we also must die. Everyone must die.
Prabhupada: Yes, we die -- to live forever. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti [Bg. 4.9]. We die for that. This is the last death.
Madhavananda: Then they will say, "How do we know?"
Prabhupada: That... You are rascal. How you will know? You come to my feet; then you will know. (laughter)
Brahmananda: To your feet or to your boot.
Prabhupada: Yes, provided there is boot. Yes. Therefore there is a Vedic injunction, tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet: [MU 1.2.12] "Because you are fool, rascal, you must approach a guru." That is the way. Sa gurum eva, eva, "certainly," abhigacchet, "must go." Otherwise there is no possibility. You remain as foolish forever and suffer.
Yogesvara: There is one German historian named Frederick Engels.
Prabhupada: Yes, he is another foolish. (laughter) I can...
Yogesvara: He wrote against Vedic culture by saying that even the brahmanas of Vedic culture were not responsible because the culture failed. It ended at a certain period in history. It was simply exploitation of the workers under the guise of religion. That was his argument.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Brahmananda: That was not the fault of the
Prabhupada: The argument of foolish man -- who is caring? Vedic culture when finished?
Yogesvara: [break] ...five thousand years ago.
Prabhupada: Five thousand years ago. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu, five hundred years, how He accepted if it is finished? He is more than Caitanya Mahaprabhu, this rascal?
Yogesvara: Haribol.
Bhagavan: They are willing to take so many material risks, but they are not willing to try spiritual life.
Prabhupada: That is their fault. That is their foolishness. Mudho nabhijanati mam ebhyah param avyayam. Therefore they are called mudhas.
Yogesvara: How would we define the word responsibility in Krsna consciousness?
Prabhupada: Responsibility is that you have got this human form of life. Realize God. This is your responsibility. Otherwise you are finished. Three words: "You have got this human form of life. Your only responsibility is to understand God. This is your responsibility." That is Vedic culture. For understanding God, many, many kings, many, many saints, they left everything and went to the forest to realize God. That is Vedic culture. Bharata Maharaja, under whose name India is called Bharatavarsa, he was the emperor of this planet, and at the age of twenty-four years he left everything to realize God. This is Vedic culture. Caitanya Mahaprabhu, His position was very, very nice, as a grhastha -- a nice beautiful wife, affectionate mother, good influence, brahmana family, learned scholar, everything first class. He left everything just to show us. He was God Himself, but to set the example, tyaktva sudustyaja-surepsita-rajya-laksmim [SB 11.5.34]. He gave up a kingdom of fortune which is aspired by the demigods. Such a nice life, such a nice family, but He gave up. Tyaktva sudustyaja-surepsita-rajya-laksmim dharmistha arya... [SB 11.5.34]. Just to teach us the process of realizing God. This is Vedic system. [break] Somebody may not push. [break] ...water? No. Very deep?
Dhananjaya: Not so much here. [break]
Prabhupada: When you ask me... What is that, definition of respons...? So you understand what is the responsibility?
Yogesvara: We have this human life. We must realize God.
Prabhupada: This, three words. Make the rascals understand it. We speak the whole responsibility in three words. Is it complete or not?
Brahmananda: Yes.
Prabhupada: Or you have got any protest? This is the only...
Bhagavan: Let Srila Prabhupada go through.
Brahmananda: They have not taken God realization as a responsibility.
Prabhupada: That is their misfortune.
Brahmananda: Simply as a pastime.
Prabhupada: That is their ignorance. They do not know what is respons...
Madhavananda: They would say that so many may have taken God realization as responsibility, following some Christ... church or something like that, but they are also frustrated.
Prabhupada: We are not frustrated. Eh? We are not frustrated. Are we frustrated? Then? How the rascal says, "frustrated"? If you take false thing, then you will be frustrated. If you take real path of God realization, there is no question of frustration. It is anandambudhi-vardhanam, increasing pleasure, no frustration.
Madhavananda: Then they say that no one has real information of God.
Prabhupada: You have no, rascal, because you are rascal. I have got. You just wash my feet, and I will inform you.
Devotees: Jaya. Haribol. [break]
Prabhupada: ...not know how to swim; that does not mean I do not. Is it a very honest statement? Oh, nobody can swim because he does not know. But if anyone knows how to swim, then why do you say that no one has done? You do not know. You accept that.
Madhavananda: Everyone thinks in terms of their own relative position.
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] Even an insignificant bird, because he knows swimming, he knows swimming, so he can challenge, and because you do not know swimming, you cannot say like that. Even insignificant bird, just see how nicely he is swimming. He knows the art. [break] ...one, cent percent of the modern people, they do not believe in God, and they do not know what is religion. That is the position. They think, "Religion is sentiment. Anyone can manufacture his own sentiment. There is no God." This is the position. So we are in fault. "It is folly to be wise where ignorance is bliss." The whole world is under this conception. Therefore we are at fault. We are preaching God consciousness.
Brahmananda: Generally they make it difficult for us to preach.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Brahmananda: They hinder us in so many ways.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Brahmananda: Because they have not realized that we have taken a responsibility. When a man has a responsibility usually he is given some certain facilities to carry out that responsibility.
Prabhupada: Everyone, cent percent godless, neither they have got intelligence to understand what is God. This is the position.
Yogesvara: Then we are giving them the intelligence as well as the answers? Because if they have no intelligence to understand...
Prabhupada: Yes. Our organization is that. Why we are opening so many centers? Just to give these rascals intelligence. Why Krsna is recognizing so nicely a preacher? Because He knows that he has to face so many difficulties. He is not easygoing, armchair politician, no. He has to face so many difficulties.
Madhavananda: Therefore Krsna recognizes by giving knowledge of Himself?
Prabhupada: Yes. Krsna immediately gives him all facilities.
Madhavananda: There has never been a movement like this which has given factual knowledge of God. Therefore they think it's sentiment, religion.
Prabhupada: So we have to abide by their sentiment? Because they are rascals, we have to become rascal?
Yogesvara: (aside:) The top has come down? (pause)
Prabhupada: What is the... Time now?
Harikesa: 6:17.
Prabhupada: Even if you take so-called responsibility, you will not be allowed to carry it out. The example I was giving: Napoleon, Hitler, and Gandhi. They took responsibility, but they were driven away. What can I do? So what is the meaning of your responsibility? You will not be allowed to execute your responsibility. What remedy you have done that you will not be allowed, kicked out? Then where is your responsibility? Even if you are very nice gentleman -- you have taken responsibility -- but nature will not allow you to execute the responsibility. What is your answer to that? Big, big Napoleon, big, big Hitler, big, big Gandhi came and gone. Where is the responsibility executed? The Napoleon was given horse urine. You know? By the Britishers.
Brahmananda: To drink.
Prabhupada: Yes. At the last stage when he was asking for water he was given horse urine. He died like that. Hitler committed suicide. Gandhi was killed. So where is their responsibility? They falsely thinking, "Without me, everything will be lost." But they are kicked out; everything is going on.
Dhananjaya: It's the same with President De Gaulle. President De Gaulle.
Prabhupada: Yes. Now, Nixon is there, but when he was on the office, he was thinking, "Without me America will go to hell." But he has gone to hell; America is there. (laughter) Just see. Just see the position of the... You can see the Nixon. When he was in the office, oh, he was a big man. He was responsible man. Now he is kicked out. He is begging, and America is going on. Where is the need of this responsibility? For several months he was asked that "You give up your responsibility." The rascal will not give: "No, without me America will go to hell." Just see. This is responsible.
Yogesvara: All of these big politicians, they seem to fall very ill afterwards. They seem to become very sick. Nixon is also sick.
Prabhupada: Not only sick, they die very soon.
Yogesvara: Radhakrishnan was paralyzed.
Prabhupada: Yes. Brain paralyzed. [break]
Harikesa: Give this to Yogesvara. (Prabhupada and devotees get into car and drive away)
Bhagavan: Actually they are envious. We are doing the same things they are doing, but better, and getting the results. We are working. We are doing so many things like they...
Prabhupada: We are not lazy. [break] ...Nixon was elected. I saw propaganda, "America needs Nixon." You have seen?
Brahmananda: Yes.
Prabhupada: People also thought, "Yes." He never said, "Nixon needs money." (laughter) This is cheating. He needs some money; he said, "America needs Nixon." And the rascals were befooled. [break] All these politicians do like that. What is their responsibility?
Brahmananda: Now Nixon is in debt. He is now in debt.
Prabhupada: Debt? Why?
Brahmananda: For his legal fees. He owes 300,000 dollars. So one rabbi...
Prabhupada: So he cannot give 300,000 dollars?
Brahmananda: No, he has no money. He had to pay taxes.
Prabhupada: So we are paying 300,000. So we are better than him. [break] ...rabbi is a Jew?
Brahmananda: Yes. So this rabbi, he is a personal friend. He has taken the responsibility for raising the money. Actually the fees were 500,000. He has already raised 200,000. 300,000 to go.
Prabhupada: And nobody is excusing the fee, the lawyers?
Brahmananda: No. But now he is writing his book.
Prabhupada: Yes, another fallacy.
Brahmananda: For that book he will get two and a half million dollars.
Prabhupada: About his life history?
Brahmananda: Yes. He is very sick now. Now he sleeps twelve hours a day.
Prabhupada: Oh. That is good. [break] He is released from all political obligations or not?
Brahmananda: From the charges?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Brahmananda: No. Actually he can be called to give testimony.
Prabhupada: Testimony?
Brahmananda: Yes. There are certain pending investigations. So he is eligible for being called to give testimony for these investigations. But on the plea of his bad health, therefore he is not being called. He is afraid actually. Right now he does not go to any social gatherings, he does not make any public appearances. He is afraid that as soon as he makes public appearances, then he will be called to give testimony. So he is actually being forced to live a very lonely life.
Prabhupada: Lonely life means drinking. What he will do? [break] ...this was made by Napoleon?
Bhagavan: Yes.
Brahmananda: So the arch is still here. (laughs)
Prabhupada: People, they come to see the arch. Just like in Rome, so many broken buildings, thousands of men go to see them, and they get good income, tourist.
Bhagavan: On New Year's we took our sankirtana party through that arch.
Brahmananda: Many people come here?
Bhagavan: For New Year's. And they all applauded us.
Prabhupada: There is another arch this side? No. Where is the other boy? I do not see him. What was the name? Yesterday he was there. One of your...
Brahmananda: Visvambhara?
Bhagavan: Oh. He is managing things at the farm today. (end)

God isn't dead - Intelligence is

Paris, June 12, 1974 download  Players

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Bhagavan: ...the original beauty.Prabhupada: Original beauty, just like animals. They remain naked. So the, the original beauty is animal. Because the animals, they do not dress. In the human society, they cover. Animals do not cover. Therefore original beauty is animal.
Satsvarupa: They say that this is, the body is made by God. Why cover it up? Nakedness is the work of God.
Prabhupada: No. God said that you should cover. (Some French boys in background are making mocking sounds, yelling, etc.) And they are becoming naked now. (yelling increases) What is that? They are laughing.
Satsvarupa: Crazy.
Bhagavan: Do we go left, Harinama?
Harinama: To the right. (more yelling, Prabhupada chuckles)
Bhagavan: When there is big kirtana party, then they stop laughing very quickly.
Prabhupada: What are these buildings?
Bhagavan: This is a big museum.
Prabhupada: Museum?
Bhagavan: Yes. [break]
Paramahamsa: Everything man creates...
Prabhupada: And why does he die?
Paramahamsa: We have got knowledge.
Prabhupada: Who has created death? Eh? Who has created death? Man creates everything, but who has created your death, Mr. Man? What is the answer?
Pusta-krsna: He has not created anything then.
Prabhupada: No no, no. I accept that man has created anything, everything. But who has created your death?
Pusta-krsna: God.
Prabhupada: Huh? Is there any answer?
Paramahamsa: Well, man has not created death.
Prabhupada: That means somebody has created. So how you can say that man has created everything? The fallacy, just see. How rascal they are. That I wanted to say.
Paramahamsa: You have quoted a great English poet who said...
Prabhupada: Eh?
Paramahamsa: You have quoted a great English Poet who says that "Man has created the city..."
Prabhupada: Ah, yes.
Paramahamsa: "...and God has created the country."
Prabhupada: This is the statement of Mr. Cowper. Man has created nothing. Suppose this building, man has created. But wherefrom the ingredient comes. Has man created? This stone, man has created? Eh? What do you think? Is this stone, creation of man?
Paramahamsa: No.
Prabhupada: Then what... You have done the work of a laborer. That's all. You have taken ingredients from God and worked hard and transformed into a step. That's all. Your creation means just like carpenter creates a furniture. That's all. That is his creation. Then that is... The economic law says that man cannot create anything. He can simply transform. These trees, has man created these trees? Why do they claim man has created everything?
Pusta-krsna: But they will say that they made the garden.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Pusta-krsna: They will say that they made a very nice garden.
Prabhupada: That's all. That is the business of gardener, servant, not creator. That is the business of the servant. Just like I keep a gardener servant, and "Do like this. Do like that." That is not he is creator. It is my money which has created. Therefore it is Krsna's, everything. That is Krsna consciousness, that you have not created anything. You are servant. You are working, and Krsna is giving you your subsistence. That's all. So why don't you accept that you are servant of God instead of claiming that you have created. What you have created? This is our challenge. Am I right or wrong?
Paramahamsa: Right.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Paramahamsa: Right.
Prabhupada: Yes. What you have created?
Paramahamsa: Life becomes so artificial. In the big city, people don't see that they depend on God.
Prabhupada: No, no. City or country, that I don't say that Mr. Cowper is perfect in his statement. City is also created by God. City is also created by God. God has given you the ingredients, He has given you the intelligence, and you create. Eh? Wherefrom you get the intelligence? Eh? Who will answer this? Wherefrom the man gets his intelligence?
Pusta-krsna: From Krsna.
Prabhupada: Yes. What is the verse?
Pusta-krsna: Mattah smrtir jnanam...
Prabhupada: Ah. Mattah smrtir jnanam apohanam ca [Bg. 15.15]. Sarvasya caham hrdi sannivistah. So He is sitting in everyone's heart, and He's giving intelligence. And because the intelligence comes from God, therefore one is more intelligent, one is less intelligent. Because intelligence is not his. It is by the mercy of God one gets more intelligence, one gets less intelligence. So intelligence is supplied by God.
Yogesvara: Yet... But they claim to have found a way of making people biologically more intelligent now.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yogesvara: The scientists claim that they have found a way of making babies more intelligent.
Prabhupada: That, they are dipping in so many things. Therefore we kick on their face, that say, promise, so many things, but cannot do anything. That is the defect of the so-called scientists. They are promising, "By scientific method, we shall make man deathless." Do they not say?
Devotees: Yes.
Prabhupada: But have they made him deathless? Simply a dream. That's all. Utopian dream.
Bhagavan: Even if they succeed in one area of doing something they promise...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Bhagavan: ...they create something that they didn't want to. They create some other problem that they didn't expect.
Prabhupada: What they have created? They are creating... But still dependent. Suppose they have created this horseless carriage. Now they are crying, "Where is the petrol? Where is the petrol?" So if God does not supply petrol, then all these horseless carriage will be pieces of tin. That's all.
Pusta-krsna: Maya-sukhaya.
Prabhupada: Can you create petrol?
Bhagavan: No.
Prabhupada: Then what is the value of your, this horseless carriage? You are dependent on God. What you have created? And what you can do? You can create war only to fight, man to man, and when you are in danger, then you go to church; "God save us. God save us." That you can create. And as far as peacefully living, accepting God as the Supreme, you can create war. That's all. That means... Like dogs, they create war. So this is a nice park. Why do you go so far? It is nice park. Now you create something to enjoy. Just like who created this building? Napoleon?
French Devotee (1): No.
Prabhupada: Then?
French Devotee (1): It's not by Napoleon. It's just...
Paramahamsa: What is it from?
French Devotee (2): It's a new building.
French Devotee (1): It's new. It's not hundred years old. It's called Marine Museum, Museum of the Marines.
Paramahamsa: It's a museum for exhibitions.
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna Hare Krsna. The man who created, he's kicked out. "Get out!" What did he do? "I have created this thing. I must enjoy." Why he's kicked out? Why?
Pusta-krsna: Because it is actually not his property.
Prabhupada: What is the answer? Why you are kicked out? Answer somebody.
Pusta-krsna: It's just like this body.
Bhagavan: He's not the real proprietor.
Prabhupada: Therefore... Yes. And not only kicked out. Who knows that he has been given a different body, maybe cats and dogs? So what is the value of this creation? Suppose I create this building, and on account of mentality, nature gives me next body a dog, and... Then what is my profit?
Yogesvara: Yeah, there was that man who came to see you a couple of days ago. His argument was that we can't really say for sure because it's not perceivable that we will take a dog's body. But at least this is something we can understand. Here's something, a nice accomplishment.
Prabhupada: But you understand, but you can understand also that you'll be kicked out. Don't you understand this?
Bhagavan: He doesn't know it.
Prabhupada: Eh? Therefore, he's a fool.
Bhagavan: There's a statement that says that...
Prabhupada: Just like suppose if I do something here in Paris, and if you say, "Sir, as soon as your visa is finished, you'll be kicked out," shall I be interested to create anything? That is intelligence, that "I will be kicked out after two months. Why shall I construct such a big scheme?" That is intelligence. So these rascals know that he'll be kicked out. Still, he works day and night for collecting bricks and stones and he becomes a big man. Mean a foolish rascal, he is considered a big man. Therefore sva-vid-varahostra-kharaih samstutah purusah pasuh [SB 2.3.19].
Paramahamsa: People argue that "God has given us our intelligence and our senses, and therefore we must enjoy."
Prabhupada: Yes. You enjoy. The dog is also enjoying. What you are enjoying more than the dog? Dog also eat. You also eat. Dog also sleep. You also sleep. Dogs also enjoy sex life. You also enjoy sex life. Dog is also afraid of his enemy. You are also afraid of your enemy. So what is the difference between you and dog? Why you claim that you have become very great? What is the difference between the dog's mentality and your mentality? God has given you intelligence to understand that you are nothing, God is everything. Just realize it. That is intelligence. That is intelligence. When you understand that "God is great. I am His servant," that is real reali... That is his intelligence. Otherwise, he's exactly like the dog. What is his intelligence?
Paramahamsa: But people today have reasoned God is dead with their intelligence.
Prabhupada: God is not dead. Your intelligence is dead. You have got a dead body, and you are proud of it. Eh? Decoration of the dead body. And you are decorating the dead body. The body's dead. That's a fact. Because as soon as you, soul, get out, it is dead body. But the body's already there. That means I am occupying a dead body. So long I am there, it is working only. But the body's dead. And you are decorating the dead body. You are so intelligent. You are interested with a dead body. And you have no intelligence to see that actually it is dead body. Because as soon as I will go away, it is dead body. The body is dead, but... Just like motor car. It is dead. If there is no petrol, it is dead. Similarly, your body is dead. Now try to understand. And if somebody decorates a dead body, is he very intelligent?
Bhagavan: No.
Prabhupada: Then? Your all acquisition is decoration of the dead body. That is a verse, apranasya hi dehasya mandanam loka-ranjanam. Loka-ranjanam. You can get some rascal and fool, some applause, "Oh, you are so nice. You are decorating dead body." But intelligent man will say "What a fool he is that he's decorating a dead body. That's all."
Yogesvara: It's like the story of the emperor's new clothes.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yogesvara: There's a story about an emperor who commissioned a tailor to make some clothes for him. So the commissioner, the tailor, outsmarted him and told the king, "I have made you invisible clothes."
Prabhupada: Oh. (laughs)
Yogesvara: So the king said, "Oh, how wonderful. I'm the only person with such clothes." So he wore the invisible clothes and went out in public. And because he was the king, everyone was saying, "Oh, just see how beautiful clothes he has." But then one simple person said: "Why is the king walking naked?"
Prabhupada: So a simple person is more intelligent than the so-called sophisticated citizens. Decorating the dead body. I think in my Back to Godhead I wrote this article.
Bhagavan: One old Back to Godhead.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Bhagavan: One old Back to Godhead.
Prabhupada: Yes. "Decoration of the dead body."
Satsvarupa: They might ask why we decorate the Deity if we say that.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Satsvarupa: Why do we decorate the, a stone Deity?
Prabhupada: Because it is not dead; it is living. They can put forward this argument. But that you do not know, that we are not decorating... We are, we are decorating the real body. Now what will be your question next?
Satsvarupa: You say it's a real body, but it appears to be stone.
Prabhupada: Why stone? Stone is also God's body. You don't know that? Do you know it or not?
Satsvarupa: Yes, in the Universal Form.
Prabhupada: No. Universal Form... Krsna says, bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh [Bg. 7.4]. Bhumi means the earth. "That is My body."
Yogesvara: But there are no... They would say that there are no symptoms of life in the Deity.
Prabhupada: No, there is life, but you have no eyes to see. There is life. He's the supreme life. Only premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena [Bs. 5.38], one who is devotee, he can see. Otherwise, are we fools, rascals, that we are worshiping a dead body? Do you mean to say after reading so many books, we are worshiping stone? You have no eyes. You have to create that eyes to see that "Here is personally Krsna present, arcavatara."
Bhagavan: They can't even see that in an animal other than human there's soul. So how can they understand the Deity?
Prabhupada: Eh?
Bhagavan: They can't...
Prabhupada: so therefore they have to become our student and become our disciple to understand this science. Otherwise, why there is propaganda if we remain the same fool and rascal? That, that is Krsna consciousness, that the stone is also, that is virad-rupa. That is also Krsna.
Satsvarupa: But by that argument, then, this body is also Krsna, made of earth and water.
Prabhupada: Yes, it is Krsna's. But you are thinking you are. That is Krsna's. Therefore this body should be engaged for Krsna's service. That is Krsna consciousness. You, as soon as you accept this body is Krsna's, then you cannot employ it for other purposes. But that realization you have no. Why do you say it is Krsna's? You are thinking your body. Or you are body. Where is that consciousness?
Paramahamsa: The impersonalists argue when they read the verse, aham sarvasya bhutesu...
Prabhupada: Eh?
Paramahamsa: They argue that Krsna's in the heart of every living entity.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Paramahamsa: Therefore, every living entity is Krsna.
Prabhupada: Why? If I am in the room, I am room? Is that very good argument? Because I am in this room, I have become room? Is that argument very sound? Krsna is within this body. I am also within this body. But does it mean I am body, or Krsna is this body?
Devotees: No.
Prabhupada: Krsna is everything; again Krsna is... That is... What is the verse? maya tatam idam sarvam jagad avyakta-murtina: "I am spread all over the universe in My impersonal feature." Jagad avyakta-murti..., mat-sthani sarva-bhutani [Bg. 9.4]. "Everything is in Me." Naham te..., "But I am not there." This is called simultaneously one and different. Acintya-bheda, that one has to understand. Where there is no Krsna consciousness, that is different from Krsna. Otherwise, everything is Krsna.
Bhagavan: The other religions do not give any...
Prabhupada: We are not talking of religions. We are talking of science.
Bhagavan: Yeah.
Prabhupada: So don't bring in any religion. A type of religion is made, "Believe something blindly." So that is not our concern. We are talking of the science. If I say that stone is also Krsna, is not that the science?
Bhagavan: It's the science of how God's energies are working.
Prabhupada: Yes. Just like if I say heat is also fire. Is there any wrong?
Bhagavan: No.
Prabhupada: Is there any wrong?
Devotees: No.
Prabhupada: Heat is also fire. But at the same time, heat is not fire. What is the difficulty to understand? If I say heat is also fire, but it is not fire, where is the wrong?
Devotee: Heat comes from the fire.
Prabhupada: Yes. Therefore the fire quality is there. Heat is the quality of the fire. Just like I taste sugar. The sweetness is also sugar. And the form is also sugar.
Yogesvara: Well, they would say, "If stone is also Krsna, then why aren't we worshiping all stone?"
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yogesvara: Then why don't we worship all... Here is also some stone. Why don't we worship this?
Prabhupada: You worship. Because you are rascal, you worship.
Yogesvara: No, they...
Prabhupada: We, we worship Krsna in His form, but you are formless. You worship that stone. When we make the form of Krsna in stone, then we worship, not that any stone. Because Krsna is everything, that does not mean I have to worship the dog. That you worship. Because you are impersonalist, you worship dog. And you are doing that. In the morning, you take a dog and worship it. That is your business. Our business is to worship the form of Krsna. That is the, required. (pause)
Bhagavan: Could we say that anyone who is engaged in glorifying the body is actually engaged in idol worship?
Prabhupada: Hmm?
Bhagavan: Anyone who's engaged in...
Prabhupada: That is already answered. Krsna says, "The body is Myself, but still, I am not there." So you cannot say by worshiping your body, you're worshiping Krsna. At that time, he's not there, although the body's also Krsna.
Paramahamsa: Sometimes, they argue, "How do you know this Deity is Krsna, and this one isn't? Because each Deity looks a little different to the material eyes."
Prabhupada: So we have to pluck out the material eyes. Then you'll see that it is all right. First of all, let me pluck out your material eyes. Then you'll see. Therefore it is said, premanjana-cchurita: "Eyes with love of Godhead." Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He saw Jagannatha Deity, Jagannatha Deity's not very beautiful. But immediately He saw Krsna and fainted. You have to make that eyes, then you'll see. So your present eye have to be plucked out. Then you'll see. Hare Krsna. Who is that statue? You are...?
Paramahamsa: It's a decoration.
Bhagavan: Where do we go?
Paramahamsa: There's a promenade around the fountain.
Prabhupada: So they have made this art. Suppose a real man and woman stands here. Will it be considered as art or criminal?
Paramahamsa: It would be considered criminal to them.
Prabhupada: Then? Their art is criminal.
Paramahamsa: But their argument is that when you glorify the body of man with...
Prabhupada: We don't glorify the body of... Who glorifies the body of man? We say it is dead body. Dead body means that does not need glorification. It is condemned. We say dead body, decoration of the dead body. We don't say art.
Paramahamsa: Catholic Renaissance Art, they glorified the dead body. Leonardo da Vinci, they glorified the body of man.
Prabhupada: That is called bhutejya. That is described in the Bhagavad-gita as worshiping the material elements. That's all. Here in western countries, that is the prominent thing, bhutejya. (pause) What is the other side? Lion? (pause, break) They cover with some cloth, some loose cloth. Is it not?
Bhagavan: Yes.
Prabhupada: This is French art, to make naked?
Devotee: Yes.
Bhagavan: Little more advanced.
Prabhupada: (laughs) Yes. Therefore nowadays students are walking naked in America. Advanced, more advanced.
Bhagavan: There was one picture in the paper of one student running to receive his diploma without any clothes on. (laughter)
Prabhupada: Just see how much rascal they are becoming. (to devotee:) Take care of your son. It is... Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna...
Paramahamsa: If the material creation is created by Krsna, then man cannot destroy it although they are thinking that if they have a nuclear war, then they will destroy the earth.
Prabhupada: What they will destroy?
Paramahamsa: They're thinking the earth will just blow up with all the atomic bombs.
Prabhupada: That means this earth will be finished?
Paramahamsa: Yes.
Prabhupada: They're expecting that?
Paramahamsa: Yes.
Prabhupada: The earth will be finished?
Bhagavan: They think it's within their power.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Bhagavan: It's within their power.
Prabhupada: Within their power, so many things they're imagining. That is not possible. He can make a big hole only. That's all. Then where he'll stand? Suppose he finishes the earth. Then he is also finished. Then what is the credit? If you suicide, if you cut your own throat, is that very good credit? Then what is the credit? Suppose he has manufactured something that the earth will be finished. Then he'll be also finished. So what is God's loss? There are millions of earth-like planets floating in the sky. So one is lost. What is God's loss? It is your loss, that you are finished. Is that very good invention, to finish yourself? You are being finished. And now you have invented instrument to be finished. So you'll be finished. Wait for that. Why you are anxious to invent something to finish yourself? Is that very good intelligence? You'll be finished. That's a fact. So why you have invented machine to finish yourself quickly and you want to take credit? That means he proves he's a nonsense. He's a nonsense.
Paramahamsa: If God is all-good, why does He permit so many wars to go on?
Prabhupada: Because you want to be finished. You create war to be finished. God does not create. Just like you have created this weapon. In the name of finishing your enemy, you'll be finished, also. Is that very good credit? And God has created like that? You have created. Why don't you understand this?
Yogesvara: Well, why has God permitted me to do such a horrible thing?
Prabhupada: Yes, that is your little independence. God does not want to touch any... By your independence, go to hell or go to heaven. That's your choice. God says that "Don't use your independence by malpractice." Sarva-dharman parityajya mam... [Bg. 18.66]. God, that is God's statement. "You surrender to Me. I'll guide you." But if you misuse your independence, that's your business. You go to hell or heaven. That's your business. (pause)
Bhagavan: Where do we go now?
Paramahamsa: The car will be waiting for us down there.
Bhagavan: You're going to get it right now?
Paramahamsa: Yes.
Prabhupada: Yes. They're all demigods, these pictures?
Pusta-krsna: Demi-animals.
Prabhupada: This is, I think, Adam and Eve, in the midst, middle? There must be some sense in the picture.
Pusta-krsna: Yes, there is.
Paramahamsa: People are believing that at the end of life, there's just death. So why worry about anything else? Therefore we should just enjoy right now.
Prabhupada: That is the difference between you and animal. The animal is in the slaughterhouse. He's not worried. But why you are worried. Suppose if you are brought in the slaughterhouse, and if you know that you'll be slaughtered, are you not worried? An animal is not worried. He's eating grass. That's all. So that is the difference between animal and man. If you are not worried, then you are animal. That's all.
Bhagavan: You once said that human life is pessimistic.
Prabhupada: Yes. Dissatisfaction. If you are not worried, that means you are animal. You are not human being.
Pusta-krsna: Is that like Prahlada Maharaja's prayer when he saw Lord Nrsimhadeva and he said, "I am not afraid of Your ferocious form, but I am afraid of this material world of samsara."
Prabhupada: Yes, yes. He has given nice reference. A devotee, although sees God in His lion feature, and very ferocious, he knows He is God. "He's my Lord." But this so-called advancement of material civilization is the greatest enemy. That is not... Material civilization is very, very backward position. Maya-mohita. He'll be captivated by the so-called stones and bricks, and he'll forget God. That is the disease of the western world. They are very much fond of these stones and bricks, and therefore they have no knowledge about God. This electricity, the electrons, the radio, this, everything machine and stones. They have got, forgotten God. Jada-vidya jato mayara vaibhava. The more you materially advance, you forget God. So human life is meant for reviving our relationship with God, but if you forget God, then what kind of civilization it is? You are forgetting your real business.
Pusta-krsna: Some people use the argument, Srila Prabhupada, that by this advancement of technology, it will free us to think of philosophical.
Prabhupada: They will free us. They will free us. Oh, that will never come. That will never come. Therefore they are called bahir-artha-maninah. They are captivated by the external feature, and one who is leading them, he's also blind, and one who is following, he's also blind. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanas te 'pisa-tantryam uru-damni baddhah [SB 7.5.31]. They do not know that material laws are so strong that they are not free to do anything.
Pusta-krsna: They are thinking that the technology will free them.
Prabhupada: Eh? No. No.
Pusta-krsna: The technology cannot...?
Prabhupada: It will bind them.
Bhagavan: It simply creates newer problems.
Prabhupada: That's all.
Paramahamsa: Some people glorify suffering in the material world because they say this increases their sense of appreciating the momentary happiness they have.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is good. (laughter) That is good, yes. "Blessings of adversity." That is blessing.
Yogesvara: Blessings of...?
Prabhupada: Adversity. Yes. Therefore, according to Vedic system, big, big king, they give up their kingdom and becomes a sannyasi, mendicant, voluntary acceptance of adversity. This is good. To live very comfortably and forget God is not good business.
Devotee: How can a devotee be free from being attracted to this worldliness?
Prabhupada: Eh?
Devotee: How can a devotee be free...?
Prabhupada: When he's attracted by Krsna, he'll forget. Just like we are more or less not attracted by these material features because we have little attraction for Krsna. That's all. So increase your attraction for Krsna; you'll forget all nonsense. Bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktir anyatra syat [SB 11.2.42]. The bhakti means more realization of God and forgetting this, all this nonsense. That is bhakti. That is the test of bhakti: how much you have become disinterested with this material advancement. That is bhakti, advancement of bhakti. And the... Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore says, niskincanasya. At last, when you'll feel that "Now I am dispossessed of all this material nonsense," then you make progress. And so long you'll feel "I have got this, I have got that, I am in possession of this, I...," that means your material disease is continuing. When you'll feel that "I do not have anything material," that is the beginning of Bhagavata-dharma.
Devotee: Prabhupada, what is the devotee's greatest enemy? A devotee's greatest enemy?
Prabhupada: He, he himself. Because he's a rascal, he's his greatest enemy. So just get out of this rascaldom, and you become your friend. Nobody is enemy. You are yourself your enemy. Nobody is enemy. (pause) Which one?
Devotees: All glories to Srila Prabhupada. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Bhagavan: One thing is, though, that people all over the world have great, great interest in India. They're looking for something in India.Prabhupada: Yes. They should because the actual spiritual understanding is there in India.
Yogesvara: They all raise the same objection, however. When we try to tell them that bhakti is the highest form of yoga, they say, "Why are you so sectarian?"
Prabhupada: Not sectarian.
Yogesvara: "India is always tolerant for so many things."
Prabhupada: You are calling us sectarian because you do not know what is yoga. You tell them that. Do you know what is yoga?
Yogesvara: They'll say: "Well, even the Gita describes so many..."
Prabhupada: They have been cheated by some cheaters that this practice, gymnastic practice, is yoga. That's all. They do not know what is yoga. Yoga-indriya-samyama. Even... All yoga systems, Patanjali's system. So indriya... Where is indriya-samyama? They are gratifying their senses to the fullest extent. And what is their yoga? That is described... You do not read the Sixth Chapter of Bhagavad-gita. Why don't you explain them that, that "You are yogi... You not yogi. You only making some farce. Where is your yogi? Are you going to a solitary place? Are you practicing alone, sitting on your seat like as they are described, and looking on the point of the nose? Are you doing that? You are not yogi. You are simply a caricature. You are not yogi." Don't accept them as yogis. If one is yogi... That, that, that gentleman, that yogi came there. He appreciated very much.
Yogesvara: Shraddhananda Giri.
Prabhupada: Yes. He said that "Swamiji, you are doing the greatest work, that God's name you are distributing." He said like that. And when the record was going on, he was very rapt attention, he was very... So actual yogi means he'll be attracted by bhakti-yoga. And these gymnasticians, what they'll understand about yoga? That is a process to control the mind. Those who are too much bodily concept of life, for them that exercise is required. But that is also not properly done. They must find out a very sacred place and practice yoga alone, not with group. Group is possible in bhakti-yoga, not this hatha-yoga. That is not possible. The first attempt is condemned. Therefore all the yogis in India, actually those who are practicing yoga, they'll live outside human society. They never live in the city and get students to get them practice. And take thirty-five dollar fee. These are all bogus.
Pusta-krsna: Prabhupada, sometimes these people, they use the argument in the Twelfth Chapter, I think it's the second or third verse, Krsna says that those who worship the impersonal Brahman, they are taking trouble. Those who worship the impersonal Brahman, they are taking much trouble.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Pusta-krsna: "But they also come to Me." So what does this "come to Me" mean? They use this to mean that the same result is there, whether you worship...
Prabhupada: They come to Me after much trouble. That's all. So a foolish man will take much trouble. And intelligent man will take the short-cut, harer nama harer nama harer nama eva kevalam [Cc. Adi 17.21]. Much trouble means he's a foolish man. And this is also stated, avyaktam vyaktim apannam manyante mam abuddhayah [Bg. 7.24]. It's clearly stated there that the Absolute Truth is impersonal, but when He comes here, He appears as a person. So this conclusion is for the abuddhayah, less intelligent class of men, poor fund of knowledge. Avyaktam vyaktim apannam manyante mam abuddhayah [Bg. 7.24].
Paramahamsa: It seems as if the more one strives to push the movement on, the Krsna consciousness movement, the more maya puts obstacles in the way.
Prabhupada: Hmm?
Paramahamsa: It seems, the more we strive to push the Krsna consciousness movement forward, the more maya puts obstacles in the way to stop us.
Prabhupada: Yes, but as soon as you become strong, naturally there will be more enemies. That is natural. Therefore last night I said, "If there is no understanding of God, where is religion?" This is not religion, the cheating. There cannot be any conception of religion without conception of God. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. Dharma means the law given by God. So if you have no idea about God, where is your religion? Religion does not mean some formalities. No, that is not religion. Formalities we have also, but we have clear conception of God. Here is Radha and Krsna.
Devotee: Prabhupada, what does it mean when we say, "Philosophy is for fools"?
Prabhupada: Philosophy for the fools? Who says? Another fool? I think this rascal Guruji says. Does he not?
Yogesvara: Yes, he says, "We have no philosophy. We just give the experience."
Prabhupada: You are all fools. You are all fools. Therefore you have no philosophy. You cannot understand philosophy.
Yogesvara: He says, "God is beyond philosophy and words."
Pusta-krsna: That is how he brainwashes them.
Paramahamsa: The impersonalists have agreed amongst themselves that "As many theories, as many ways to God."
Prabhupada: But God says, "Although there are many ways, you give them up. You take to this only. Surrender unto Me." Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. Their many ways means there are many kinds of men. So in the sastra sometimes the attempt is to bring every one of them to bhakti-yoga.
Paramahamsa: But they argue that no matter, all ways, all paths lead to Krsna.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Paramahamsa: They argue that all paths lead to Krsna. So why is one better than another?
Prabhupada: If you know that all paths leads to Krsna, then why don't you take this path? Why you are going round about way? If somebody asks you, "Where is your nose?" What is the use of showing like this. (laughter) Show like this. If you know really nose. But you do not know. Therefore you are going like this.
Guru-gauranga: They say one man's food is another man's poison. So perhaps this process isn't practical for everyone.
Prabhupada: Yes. So you take the poison and die. Because you do not understand easily, better you take poison and die.
Paramahamsa: What does it mean when they say that failure is the pillar of success?
Prabhupada: Yes. For whom? Who is actually searching after success? Not for the fool. Anyone who is trying for attaining success, for him, failure is also success because he's making progress. Harer nama harer nama... [Cc. Adi 17.21]. God says, "Many ways." That's all right. But why does He says that "If you want to know Me perfectly, and without any doubt, then this is the process, bhakti"? Other processes are there but by those processes you cannot understand. Just like practically, call anyone, so-called yogis, so-called jnanis, they'll not understand Krsna. They'll not understand Krsna. So all other paths that are recommended, by those paths you cannot understand God perfectly and without any doubt. Therefore God says clearly, bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah: [Bg. 18.55] "Actually, what I am, that can be understood by bhakti-yoga." Other systems, you'll... I explained that last night. That is partial understanding. That is not full understanding.
Yogesvara: But they'll say that that's the conclusion of Bhagavad-gita, but we don't accept Bhagavad-gita.
Prabhupada: Then go to hell. (laughter)
Yogesvara: But they say other parts of the Vedas recommend other ways.
Prabhupada: That's all right. We are preaching Bhagavad-gita. If you like, you take it. Otherwise, go to hell. Who cares for you? We have, we have started this institution, "Krsna Consciousness." So if you do not accept Bhagavad-gita, then why did you come here? Why do you come here? You go away. We are not hankering after you. If you go to hell, go to go. Go to that. Who objects? Go. But if you come here, then you must be Krsna conscious. If there is some signboard that "Indian sweets, rasagulla is available," why do you go there for asking meat? What is this meaning? We, we, our Society, it is Krsna consciousness. So why do you come here for if you don't believe in Krsna? Go to hell. Don't come here. If you want to understand Krsna, then come here. That is the first principle. Therefore in New York somebody suggested that "Make this International Society of God Consciousness." That will be great havoc. They'll bring, rascals, so many gods. Make it clear, Krsna consciousness. If you are interested in Krsna, then come here. If you are interested in something else, you go there.
Paramahamsa: Sometimes people say, "I'm too dirty, too contaminated to come."
Prabhupada: "I'm too dirty"?
Paramahamsa: Yes.
Prabhupada: So cleanse yourself. Why don't you cleanse? Ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. The cleansing process is chant Hare Krsna and you'll be cleansed. Why do you stick to dirtiness? Be cleansed. If you agree that you are in dirtiness, then take the process of cleansing the dirt.
Paramahamsa: Sometimes people argue that they've been born a sinful person. I know you said once in an article that vice is not inherent in the living entity.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Paramahamsa: That vice, or sinful activity is not something one is born with, that he acquires those qualities. But many people believe today that they are born, you know...
Prabhupada: But we are giving you the process of cleansing. Why you are persisting to remain unclean? We are giving you the medicine. We are all unclean. Now we are attempting and we are becoming clean. Why don't you come and be cleansed? [break] ...Navadvipa. From the day you arrive there, you'll be cleansed. I have got such a nice place. Come there, and stay, according to our rules and regulations. He'll be cleansed. One may be diseased but there are so many clinics, so many physicians, cleaning. Why should you insist to remain unclean? [break] That is accepted. Janmana jayate sudrah (?). By birth, everyone is a sudra. Sudra means unclean. Samskarad bhaved dvijah. But he takes to the reformatory methods, he becomes cleansed, dvija, twice-born, brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya.
Paramahamsa: Do people naturally act sinfully, or is that something that they develop?
Prabhupada: Hm? By association. If you mix with the drunkards, you'll learn how to drink. And if you mix with the devotees, similarly, you can become cleansed. By the association. Sangat sanjayate kamah. One's desires develop according to the association.
Bhagavan: Srila Prabhupada, in the Bhagavad-gita, you state that sometimes they begin to take on these demonic qualities within the womb. These demonic qualities are inherited from the past life. So if we begin Krsna conscious education very young, it's possible to stop these demonic qualities from developing?
Prabhupada: No. His demonic qualities will be purified. Otherwise, what is the use of preaching? If the qualities cannot be changed, then what is the meaning of preaching?
Bhagavan: No, I said if we begin education early, they can be...
Prabhupada: Yes, as early as possible. From the very womb, you begin education. Let the mother hear about Krsna. He'll be purified from the womb. Just like Prahlada Maharaja became. He was born by a demon father. But his quality changed when his mother was instructed by Narada Muni, everything was changed. If the demons cannot be changed, then what is the meaning of preaching?
Pusta-krsna: Prabhupada, sometimes they argue that Krsna knows past, present and future. We are preaching that we have minute independence. We are preaching that Krsna has given us minute independence to desire. So if Krsna knows past, present and future, then where is the question of our independence? In other words, He knows already what we're going to desire?
Prabhupada: Past, present and future? Therefore there should be no independence? Is that a very good argument?
Pusta-krsna: That is their argument.
Bhagavan: They say if Krsna knows already what you're going to do in the future, then what is the question of your independence?
Prabhupada: Therefore Krsna says, "Don't do it. Do it." Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam... [Bg. 18.66]. He was going to do sinful activities. Krsna advises him, "Don't do it." Krsna changes. Therefore He comes. Because Krsna knows that in the future, you'll, you'll do all sinful activities, therefore Krsna comes to check you, "Don't do it."
Pusta-krsna: All that karma is erased as soon as he surrenders to Krsna?
Prabhupada: Yes. Krsna says, "Don't do it. Do this." Because He knows your future, therefore He comes to request you, "You rascal, don't do this. Do this." That is His knowing feature. "If you don't this, then I know you'll do simply sinful activities. So therefore I come to save you. Don't do this. Do this." What is the wrong there? Krsna says, yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati, tadatmanam srjamy aham: [Bg. 4.7] "When they misuse their independence, then I come to check them." Hare Krsna Hare Krsna... [break]
Pusta-krsna: ...as tiny jivatmas...
Prabhupada: That is independence. That is independence. If you don't surrender... That you can do also. But if you surrender, you are saved. And if you do not surrender, if you want to go to hell, Krsna does not check you, "All right, go to hell." Krsna comes to save you. Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami: "I shall save you from all sinful reaction of life. You have done so many lives simple sinful activities. Now you stop it. You surrender to Me, and I give you assurance that I'll save you." This is Krsna's mission. And if you think that you don't want to be saved, all right, you can go to hell, again. You become again the worms of stool. That's your choice.
Pusta-krsna:. So it's a very responsible position, to become a devotee of Krsna.
Prabhupada: Yes, Therefore those who do not do that, they have been described, mudhah. Na mam duskrtino mudhah [Bg. 7.15]. One who does not take Krsna's instruction, they're all rascals. That is our test. A man may be very nicely dressed, running fast in the motor car. Ask him, "Do you know Krsna?" "No, sir." "You are a rascal." That's all. Finish all business. We don't give any respect. We can give respect as a formality, but we can understand immediately, "Here is a rascal." That's all. Is that correct? Yes. To find out a rascal is very difficult job? Simply see that he's not Krsna conscious. He's a rascal. That's all. That they may say, "You are very sectarian." Just like a criminal, he's punished, and he may say to high-court judge, "You are very sectarian. You are punishing me, and the other man, you awarded one million dollars. What is this?" Because he gave before a judgement that "This man must get this one million dollars," and next moment, he punishes one man, "Go to jail for six years." So the criminal may say, "Oh, you are so partial. You are giving, sending me to cell, and the other man, you are giving one million dollar. How is this?" But he does not know that he judging according to his work.
Devotee: If a person's senses are restrained by following regulative principles, but if his mind dwells in sense objects, is he becoming purified, or is he just a pretender.
Prabhupada: Strained?
Devotee: Restrained, controlled.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Devotee: If the senses are controlled, but his mind is contemplating sense objects, is he a pretender or is he becoming purified?
Prabhupada: No, no. By controlling the senses, gradually the mind will be controlled. You know. In the..., the tiger and the lion trained up to play in the circus, do you know how it is done?
Dhananjaya: They starve the animals.
Prabhupada: No.
Pusta-krsna: They feed them every time, whenever they do something.
Prabhupada: No, after catching them from the forest, they kept within the bars, and no eating for at least one week. Then the trainer comes. Only whips. He comes, and open the doors and only: (makes sound) Flosh, flosh, flosh. So already he's hungry, weak, and he's whipped. In this way, he becomes fearful. As soon as the man comes, he becomes fearful. Then he gives him little food. In this way, after all it is animal, he thinks that "This man is my God. He can save me. He can kill me." Then he takes to him. Whatever he says, he takes. Similarly, if you do not give the ingredients for sense enjoyment, the mind will be controlled. That is the beginning. You simply... Don't give... The mind wants, "Now let me go to the restaurant." "No, sir." Beat him with shoes. Instead of going to the restaurant, he beats the mind with shoes. Then mind will not again say, "Go to the restaurant." That is called swami, gosvami. One who can control his mind, that is gosvami. We giving the title "Gosvami" But if you cannot control your mind, then you are unfit. Go means senses, and svami means master. One who can control the senses and master, he is gosvami. (pause) ...definition of gosvami there: vaco vegam krodha-vegam manasa-vegam udara-vegam upastha-vegam, etan vegan yo visaheta dhirah prthivim sa sisyat [NoI 1]. You have to control the impulse of speaking, vaco vegam, the impulse of becoming angry, vaco vegam, krodha-vegam. Then manasa-vegam, force of the mind. Then udara-vegam, the belly. Belly, already, although it is filled up, and as soon as there is some nice... Please fill up again, again. This you have to control, udara-vegam. Udaropastha-vegam, genital. In this way, one who has controlled all these forces, he is able to make disciple all over the world. Otherwise, not this rascal guru. As soon as he saw one very beautiful secretary, "Oh, let me enjoy." And he's guru. So these are cheating. And people want to be cheated. Therefore the cheaters are there. [break] ...fourteen years old. A fourteen years old cannot be induced to marry a twenty-six years girl. That is unnatural. And by medical examination, it is found that he's at least thirty-two years. It is declared in the medical, and still, the rascals following him. That he's cheating by talking false things. So in one sense, the Western boys and young generation, they are actually hankering after some spiritual life. So any Indian, so-called sadhu and guru comes, they go there. But they are cheated unfortunately. So you make your society so strong that you be not cheated, and others may not cheat. Then it will be first-class. And if you make another society of cheaters and cheated, there is no profit. Therefore you have to follow the rules and regulations very strictly and become serious. Then you'll be ideal. People are in need of some spiritual energy. Therefore, as soon as some swamis or guru comes, they flock together to get some food. But these rascals are cheating. So you don't do that.
Paramahamsa: It's also said that if you follow perfectly the rules and regulations, but don't develop love for Krsna, then you have wasted your time.
Prabhupada: Yes, but if you follow the rules and regulations, automatically, you'll love Krsna. Sadhakanam ayam premnah pradurbhave bhavet kramah. These are the stepping-stones. The devotional service develops by association. So if the associates are pure devotees, anyone who will come to that association will become devotee. [break] ...just like a young man and young woman. The devotion is there, love is there, but in the beginning, they should mix, or some presentation should be given, some, something eatable should be accepted, should be given. In this way, when the association is thick and thin, the love is there. The love is already there. It has to awakened by a certain process. Dadati pratigrhnati bhunkte bhojayate guhyam akhyati prcchati ca sad-vidham priti-laksanam. These are six types of loving principles, that you give, if you want to love somebody, you give something. And whatever he or she offers, you take from him. Dadati pratigrhnati. You give him something to eat, and whatever he or she gives, you eat. Bhunkte bhojayate ca. And guhyam akhyati prcchati. And you try to understand his heart, and your heart be disclosed to him or her. If you follow these principles, automatically the loving propensity will awaken. It is already there. It is not artificial. It has simply to be awakened by a certain process. So that process we are prescribing, to rise early in the morning, have mangala-aratrika, worship Deity, offer food stuff, eat prasadam, chant Hare Krsna. Anyone who will follow this principle, he will become purified. There is no need of education, because the devotion is already there. By following these rules and regulations, it will be awakened. As, as, as in this straw, there is fire. Now, you ignite it, and just fan it, and the fire will come. It is already there, fire. But you know, you must know the process how to ignite fire. Huge fire will come. You can burn the whole garden from this straw. Is it not? So you must know the process, how to ignite fire. Fire is already there, in these trees, in these straws, in this grass. Fire is already there. That, that is the process. First of all, you must know that fire is already there. Now ignite. Then it comes more. Then burning, blazing. So the blazing fire is required. But that will come gradually. If you follow the process. That is described by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in the Siksastakam, ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. The first step will be cleansing of the heart. And in the heart there is God, already. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. The Lord is situated in everyone's heart. So actually yoga system is to find out the Lord within the heart. That is meditation. Lord is there already: simply we have to find it out. That, that if, if you are informed that within this park there is one hundred weight of gold is lying there. Now you have to find out. But the indication is there. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. The Lord, the Supreme Lord, is situated in everyone's heart. Now find him out. That is yoga system. So these people, without finding out the Lord by practicing... (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: What do you understand by the word "maya"?Yogesvara: That which is not.
Pusta-krsna: Things which we place value on that have no relation to Krsna.
Prabhupada: The maya is explained very nicely in the Bhagavata, yathabhaso yatha tamah. Just like sun is reflected in the water, and the light is reflected again on the wall. This is the exact explanation of maya. Reality, this material world, the man who manufactured all these things, nobody knows where he has gone, but these things are taken as reality. This will be also finished. It will remain as relics, as Rome, relics, but when it was..., the houses were prepared with great enthusiasm as reality. And now it is as relics. So the energy expended for manufacturing those house, that is also maya, and now they are being visited as relics. That is also maya. So all these things are mayara vaibhava, expansion of maya. So if somebody says that you don't appreciate these things? No, we appreciate, very much appreciate intelligence. But if you, for this appreciation, if you forget, then it is maya. Forget Krsna.
Pusta-krsna: Krsna.
Prabhupada: Then it is maya. Otherwise, it is reality. If they would have installed Deity worship in these buildings, how much nice it would have been. People chanting, dancing, and taking prasadam, twenty-four hours. Then it is no more maya. It is reality. Such big, big, nice houses, they should have been places of worshiping Krsna. But they're worshiping bones, keeping some dead bones, and...
Pusta-krsna: People must be educated that everything belongs to Krsna.
Prabhupada: That is a fact. Why they do not understand?
Paramahamsa: The government argues that they do not want to discriminate against any religious faith. So they remain secular.
Prabhupada: No, no. That is no governmen... Religious faith is different. That is nonsense. You, we are talking of science. We are, just like we were saying that everything belongs to Krsna. So where is the, any religious feeling? Everything belongs to Krsna, how you can say no? Can you say?
Paramahamsa: They can say, "We don't know Krsna."
Prabhupada: You don't know Krsna, but it belongs to somebody. He may be named as Krsna or something else. That doesn't matter. But it is, it does not belong to you. How you can deny it? You have come here... Suppose I have come here, in Paris. I stay here for one week, two. Does it mean Paris is mine? Similarly, you come from the womb of your mother and stay here, say, fifty years. That is mean yours? The same example. Does it mean that the world belongs to you? Why you are claiming, "This is France," "This is Europe," "This is America," "This is mine," "This is mine..."? Before your birth it was there, and when you go, it will remain there. So how you claim that it is yours? So you don't... You must know as it remained, it was there before my birth, and it will remain after my departure. Then how it belongs to you? What is the answer?
Paramahamsa: It belongs to the man who created it.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Paramahamsa: It belongs to the man who created it and is conscious of its origin.
Prabhupada: Who created? Who created? You created this stones and sand?
Paramahamsa: Nature.
Prabhupada: Then what is nature?
Satsvarupa: The life force working behind...
Prabhupada: Eh? Eh?
Satsvarupa: They'd say the life force is working...
Prabhupada: Therefore nature is... Behind the nature, there is Krsna. Mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa... [Bg. 9.10].
Pusta-krsna: How is it possible, Srila Prabhupada? We're so tiny, one ten-thousandth the tip of a hair, and yet we can become so puffed-up as to think that even I am God or I am the controller of the material nature like the scientists are thinking?
Prabhupada: Because they are in the bodily concept of life, they are thinking, "I'm not teeny, small particle. I am this big, fatty body." He's thinking like that. Just like a dog is thinking, "I am bulldog." It is like that, the same concep...
Pusta-krsna: So that idea just in the mind?
Prabhupada: Yes. That is animalism. (pause) [break]
Paramahamsa: ...performing these works and these creations independent of God.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Paramahamsa: The materialist sees himself acting independent of God.
Prabhupada: How he's independent of God? Napoleon wanted to finish that arch, and he was kicked out. How he's independent of God. Such a big person, strong person, he wanted to finish, but he was not allowed to finish. Then how he thinks that he's independent. That is foolishness, that I can be kicked out at any moment, and still he's thinking "I am independent." What is the answer? Why he was kicked out? He was a very powerful man, and why he was kicked out? "No, you cannot finish. You go, get out immediately." Then? Where is his independence. He was simply falsely puffed-up independent. And now, after being kicked out, if he has taken the body of a cat and dog, then what is the benefit? Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27]. The nature is so strong and the laws are so stringent. We are not independent. If you touch fire, fire is one of the elements, it will burn your finger. However powerful you may be, you cannot stop it. Then where is your independence?
Pusta-krsna: We studied a verse yesterday evening in the Bhagavad-gita in the Eighteenth Chapter. Krsna says, "Work always under My protection."
Prabhupada: Hm?
Pusta-krsna: Krsna says to always work under His protection, that "One may be engaged in all sorts of activities, but, in the end, by My grace, you will come back to Me."
Prabhupada: Yes.
Pusta-krsna: So the activities of the materialistic man, then, no matter what he does, he will develop another material body for it. (indistinct) Is that right, Srila Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: Hm? Yes.
Pusta-krsna: And a devotee is acting, but he's not getting any mental impression? From his activities?
Prabhupada: His mind is being... His mental expression is Krsna. He's always thinking of Krsna. Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Hare Rama. We have got some propensity to create. Just like this beautiful place. We have got creative energy. Therefore it is advised that nirbandhah krsna-sambandhe. Make it for Krsna. You'll find in India, they have also created big, big temples, four flight, but for Krsna. Then the energy spent for creating this park, in relationship with Krsna will be utilized as service to Krsna. And if it simply meant for sense gratification, then you are under the laws of nature, contaminated. Just like if a man is very powerful, he's creating this park, but he is contaminated with some infection, he, will he not suffer?
Pusta-krsna: He must suffer.
Prabhupada: Does it mean that because he has created this park, therefore contamination will not act upon him? Is it a fact? It must act. So after creating all these things, if you contaminate some infectious modes of material nature, then you have to accept the body of cats and dogs. Then what is your benefit? Karanam guna-sango 'sya sad-asad-janma-yonisu [Bg. 13.22]. Karanam, the reason for high and low grade birth is due to contamination with the modes of material nature. Hare Krsna.
Paramahamsa: Yesterday, we said that, Prahlada Maharaja said that he didn't fear Lord Nrsimhadeva, even though he was so ferocious, but he feared the material nature.
Prabhupada: That is contamination. If I be contaminated with the material nature, then I'll have to accept a body given by material nature.
Paramahamsa: But it's said that a devotee's supposed to be fearless.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Paramahamsa: It is said that a devotee is supposed to be fearless.
Prabhupada: Fearless because devotee means one who has taken shelter of Krsna. He's devotee. He's fearless. And one who has not taken shelter of Krsna, how he can be fearless? Suppose there is epidemic disease, if you have got vaccination, then you can remain fearless. Otherwise, the epidemic will contaminate and then you'll have to suffer. So Krsna is the vaccination to remain fearless.
Pusta-krsna: You have used the example, Srila Prabhupada, that just like a little child, when he's near his father, he knows he has nothing to worry about. His father will protect him.
Prabhupada: Yes. Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna... Today, it is cold, eh? Where is our Karandhara?
Bhagavan: Karandhara Prabhu. He's here.
Prabhupada: You are feeling very cold?
Karandhara: Not too cold, Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: I am feeling. Old man.
Pusta-krsna: Would you like this blanket also, Srila Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: No, that's all right. Hare Krsna Hare Krsna...
Pusta-krsna: So as soon as the modes of nature are no longer working on the spirit soul, then he experiences that he's no longer changing his body?
Prabhupada: Yes. Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya dura... mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14].
Pusta-krsna: By taking shelter of Krsna.
Prabhupada: Yes. The thing is that if I am so much susceptible to the contamination of maya, the modes of material nature, then if I waste my time in material advancement of life, is it not risky?
Pusta-krsna: Very risky.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Pusta-krsna: Just the other morning, you were lecturing that just because we are young, we should not waste a moment here and think that "Oh, I have so much time to live. Let me put off Krsna consciousness..."
Prabhupada: That is fall consciousness. Prahlada Maharaja said: "immediately..." Kaumara acaret prajno dharman bhagavatan [SB 7.6.1]. No waste after. Our policy is that. Therefore we have opened Dallas, that immediately, from the very beginning of life let them understand Krsna consciousness.
Yogesvara: Srila Prabhupada if the devotee is fearless, how is it that Prahlada was expressing his fearfulness of material nature?
Prabhupada: Huh?
Yogesvara: If the devotee is fearless, how is it Prahlada was expressing his fearfulness of the material nature?
Prabhupada: Yes. Even you are fearless, you should not be fool. Because, if you know that "There is danger, I must be very careful," that is intelligence. That is not fearfulness. Besides that, a devotee like Prahlada, he's fearless, but he's fearful for others. That is stated. Just like the mother. She knows that she'll not catch fire, she'll not fall down in the water, but she is always anxious to see her child that the child may not fall into the water, may not catch fire. She's working in her own way, but always fearful of the child. Similarly, a Vaisnava, he's not fearless for himself, but because he's sympathetic, because he knows that all these rascals, they are wrongly wasting their time, therefore he's anxious, fearful. Para-duhkha-duhkhi. They are unhappy by seeing others unhappy. For themselves, there is no unhappiness. That is their grace. And Vaisnava is fearless, even if he's sent to hell, he's not unhappy. Because wherever he goes, he'll chant Hare Krsna. So actually he has no fear, fearfulness. He is only unhappy... Just like we are talking. Others may think that we are criticizing, but we are actually talking. Suppose this, one who has manufactured this big park and he has, next life, he has become contaminated, the dog's life, then what is the use? How you can guarantee that you are not going to be a dog? It is under the management of material nature, maram (?), very powerful. Just like even a big man like Napoleon, he's also under the control of material nature. As soon as the time is... "Get out." "No, I want to finish this arch." "No, sir, you get out." Then where is your powerfulness? That they do not know. For the temporary power, they become puffed up and go to hell. That's all. But they have no conception of hell. These are primitive ideas.
Yogesvara: It's sometimes very hard to feel a compassion for others when we ourselves are still feeling so much contaminated.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yogesvara: We, in the neophyte stage, we're feeling ourselves so much attacked by maya that sometimes it's very difficult...
Prabhupada: Therefore those who do not take risk, they do not remain within this material world. They go to the Himalaya, go to the forest. They are afraid of being contaminated. But more liberal devotees, they take the risk and "Never mind, I shall go to hell. Let me do something for Krsna. Let others may understand something of Krsna." That is their, mean magnanimity, taking the risk of going to hell, still, giving the information, "Just try to understand Krsna." So such persons are exalted. Because they are taking their own risk to serve Krsna. That at least one man may understand Krsna. And others, they are flying, flying away, fleeing away, "No, no. We are not going to take risk."
Pusta-krsna: Krsna says that there's no one more dear to Me than...
Prabhupada: Gosthyanandi and bhajananandi. Bhajananandi means they are interested for their own welfare, and gosthyanandi, he wants to see that more devotees are there. That is the difference.
Paramahamsa: Actually, Prahlada Maharaja said that he's not feeling any anxiety for himself...
Prabhupada: Yes, yes, yes.
Paramahamsa: He's feeling anxiety that they're not taking to Krsna consciousness.
Prabhupada: They're... And, on account of his being so, taking the risk, he is immediately very dear to Krsna. That is declared in the Bhagavad-gita, na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah [Bg. 18.69]. "Anyone who is trying to broadcast My message, My glory, he immediately, there is no more dearer than him anyone." So one should take this risk.
Paramahamsa: Srila Prabhupada, yesterday you said that Krsna appreciates the devotee when he accepts voluntary adversity.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Paramahamsa: Yesterday, you said that Krsna appreciates when a devotee accepts voluntary adversity.
Pusta-krsna: Like the kings who gave up everything to live an ascetic life.
Paramahamsa: But how do we know what, how do we know when we should accept this adversity? Sometimes people artificially...
Prabhupada: No, no. Adversity, not always to accept. But you have to follow the regulative principle enjoined in the sastras. That is, in one sense... Suppose you are accustomed to certain type of, standard of living, but for Krsna's sake, you have to give it up. That kind of adversity. That is not actually adversity, but he thinks that "I have taken this voluntary..." What is this, electric? So not a single useful tree. These trees are no fruits, no flowers.
Yogesvara: Yes. Can we call these trees demonic?
Prabhupada: Not demonic. Sinful.
Paramahamsa: They have many seeds to reproduce themselves, but no fruits or flowers.
Prabhupada: Impious, not pious. What is the name of this park?
Yogesvara: The Tuilerie Park.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yogesvara: The Tuilerie Garden.
Prabhupada: Tuilerie.
Yogesvara: Tuilerie Garden.
Pusta-krsna: That is the name of a person?
Devotee: No, no.
French devotee: It was the park of a king before. There was a king.
Prabhupada: Oh, the king is a park only.
Pusta-krsna: So you were explaining that they're naming everything in the material world after different people in regards to Lake Geneva. You said, "It's Geneva's lake, but actually, it is Krsna's lake, or Krsna's park."
Prabhupada: Yes, but they have no sense. They think it is Geneva's park.
Pusta-krsna: We could call it Purusottama Park, or something like that.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is nice. Therefore, we give name everyone: Krsna dasa, servant of Krsna. Hare Krsna Hare Krsna... (pause) [break]
Paramahamsa: ...and we give them the argument, could you eat if we brought you the cow and let you kill her yourself, and they say, "No, I could not do that." (Prabhupada chuckles) But yet, when the cow's meat is killed and wrapped up in a nice wrapper, they eat, and they don't have any bad feeling about it.
Prabhupada: This is called maya. He cannot face the actual situation, but, covered by some maya, he accepts. This is another example of maya. Directly killing the animal he cannot tolerate, but when it is covered by maya, the same danger, he accepts.
Pusta-krsna: It is like the people: they say that the air is very polluted. We cannot breathe it now. And they will smoke cigarettes also.
Prabhupada: (Chuckles) Yes.
Paramahamsa: Actually, our preaching work is when we show people how, by avoiding Krsna, they actually kill themselves.
Prabhupada: Hm? Yes. Suicidal. Atma-han. Narottama dasa Thakura said, janiya suniya bisa khainu. Knowingly, I am drinking poison. Knowingly. Janiya suniya bisa khainu.
hari hari! bifale janama gonainu
manusya-janama paiya, radha-krsna na bhajiya,
janiya suniya bisa khainu
Bisa khainu means drinking poison. (pause)
Paramahamsa: Although a devotee feels helpless in the hands of Krsna, still, in order to execute his duty, he must be very strong.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Paramahamsa: How does he reconcile those two?
Prabhupada: He must work for Krsna. He is not doing anything for himself. He's doing for Krsna. For Krsna's sake, one can take any kind of risk. Just like the karmis, they take any kind of risk for earning some money similarly, bhakta also will take any kind of risk to satisfy Krsna. Guru-krsna. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah **. So it is not very clean. Why?
Paramahamsa: Many, many people come here every day and not too many people clean. It's difficult to have people clean. They think it's too low, as an occupation.
Devotee: They spend their money making bombs instead of sanitation. (Prabhupada laughs) (pause)
Prabhupada: Why?
Paramahamsa: Instead of taking bath every day, they use perfume on their body. Fifty years ago, very few people had a shower in the home, and they would go to a public bath once a week or twice a week for a bath. Most of the time they cleaned themselves off with alcohol.
Prabhupada: They still, in Germany, they have no bath in every house. They go to the public bath. Is it not? They, simply they have got only one toilet. That's all. And for taking bath, they go the public house. They have to pay some... [break] Hmm?
Devotee: The creation of the materialism is only one-fourth.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Devotee: What happened to the other three-fourths?
Prabhupada: What is this picture?
Paramahamsa: It's a Greek myth.
Prabhupada: Whom he's killing?
Paramahamsa: It's a man with the head of a...
French Devotee: ...the head of a bull. The head of a bull.
Devotee: Head of donkey.
Prabhupada: No, it is goat, goat.
Paramahamsa: These are called centaurs.
Devotee: It's a man with a bull's head.
Yogesvara: Like Daksa.
Prabhupada: Daksa?
Yogesvara: Daksa has a head of a goat.
Prabhupada: Daksa. Daksa. Yes. Maharaja Daksa.
Pusta-krsna: In order to chant the holy name purely, Srila Prabhupada, is it necessary to feel separation?
Prabhupada: Hm?
Pusta-krsna: In order to chant the holy name purely, is it necessary to have feelings of separation?
Prabhupada: Yes. Provided he has got the taste for chanting. Otherwise he'll sleep. That's all. (pause) These are all buildings for museum?
Paramahamsa: Yes, and some small parts are used for administrative offices, the government and police. This used to be a king's palace.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Paramahamsa: This used to be the king's palace, of France.
French Devotee: (indistinct)
Paramahamsa: Yes, this was the palace before they built the big palace in Versailles. Versailles is like a demigod's planet. It's the most wonderful building in all of France. Everything in gold, and wonderful paintings. Very, very big, and wonderful gardens and rivers. The king of France was very intelligent. In order to keep the nobles from revolting against him, he invited them all to his palace to enjoy with him. And he gave them wonderful feasts and a lot of sex life, and wonderful music. And like this, they never revolted during his time. This was Louis the Fourteenth.
French Devotee: He was called the sun king.
Paramahamsa: They call him the saintly king.
French Devotee: Sun, sun.
Paramahamsa: Oh, the sun king.
Prabhupada: What is that sun king?
Paramahamsa: Why do they call him "Sun King"?
French Devotee: Because he was very opulent.
Paramahamsa: Today, the French people collect millions of dollars every year from the Americans to keep Versailles beautiful.
Prabhupada: American tourists pay.
Paramahamsa: Yes, many hundreds and thousands of American tourists come there every year just to see this opulence.
Yogesvara: The Americans appreciate opulence. That's why we joined your movement.
