Prabhupada:This is the greatest drawback of modern education, that not only in your country or any country they have completely neglected what is meant by God. And in India, they are especially... Now, as soon as there is any question of God, they see phobia: "Oh, this is all nonsense." They have become so clever.

So anyway, my appeal to you, American people, that you are considered to be the leader of all nations of the world. You should take this Krsna conscious movement very seriously. It is good for you. It is good for the whole world. It is individually, collectively, without any consideration of caste, creed, or color. Everyone can chant Hare Krsna, anyone and everyone, at home, on the street. There is no expenditure. Suppose while walking if you chant Hare Krsna, there is no loss, there is no expenditure, but you see how much you are profited by chanting Hare Krsna. This is practical. We don't say that "You come to our temple and give us some subscription. Become our member." That is a secondary question. Our primary movement is that everyone may take advantage of this movement and simply chant wherever possible, at home, at work, on the street, anywhere. There is no regulation where you have to chant and how you have to chant. It is spontaneous. Simply chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. There are only three words there: Hare, Krsna, and Rama, but they are adjusted in a different position. There are sixteen words. So it is not very difficult. You can make an experiment. The children also may take pleasure. We have got our records. If you play those records and chant with it, you will find a transcendental pleasure in you. These are facts. So our request to you, that you take this movement a little seriously, and you will be happy by grace of Krsna.

Thank you very much. If you have got any question, you can ask. (pause)

Devotee: We should chant about five minutes. Then we'll serve milk.

Prabhupada: Yes. No, let, if there is any question, we shall answer. That is not yet one hour.

Devotee: Some of the older boys want to stay after, and you can discuss with them then. They may have some questions.

Prabhupada: So first of all you have to chant? All right. Please join with us and chant Hare Krsna. Yes?

Yamuna: Swamiji, may I say something before we chant?

Prabhupada: Yes.

Yamuna: I want everybody to listen very carefully. This is a new song that... It would be very nice if you should learn how to sing and learn how to sing it very well. And the only way you can do it is by listening very carefully, everybody, So give your attention to these words: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Now, if everybody will do this, and stand up, close your eyes very tight, put your hands up in the air and sing this song, so you really learn the words, and you can go home and teach it to your brothers and sisters and your mother and your father, and tell them what you learned today. You have to say you learned something. So if you teach them this song, that would be very nice. But you must learn it by listening. So listen to the words. Then get up, close your eyes and just sing. And you'll find it's a very nice song. But unless you try it, you won't learn it. Just like all the other songs you learn in your class. So try it. So I'm going to say the words, and then you say the words after me. We're going to practice it once. Okay. (with children repeating) Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Okay. Now we're going to clap our hands too. [break]

Devotee: Do you want this? It's pineapple.

Prabhupada: Distribute prasada. What is this?

Devotee: Pineapple. There's apples too.

Prabhupada: Pineapple? Oh. There is what? What is that?

Devotee: Oh, this is milk and bananas.

Prabhupada: Oh!

Devotee: Warm milk and bananas. (end)

Prabhupada: Is it working?

Devotee: Yes.

Prabhupada: So one intelligent boy should come forward. Who is intelligent, most intelligent boy? You come forward? Come on. Eh? Somebody come forward, some of the boys. Come on. You come on. No? All right. Very good. Stand up here. Can you say what is this? What is this?

Boy: Hand.

Prabhupada: Whose hand?

Boy: Your hand.

Prabhupada: Your hand. And what is this?

Boy: Your head.

Prabhupada: My head. Yes. And what is this?

Boy: Your knee.

Prabhupada: Yes. My leg. And what is this?

Boy: Your clothes.

Prabhupada: My cloth. Similarly, you have got your head, you have got your hand, you have got your leg, you have got your coat, you have got your pant, but do you know where you are?

Boy: I am here. (laughter)

Prabhupada: You are here, but that is your coat, that is your pant, that is your hand, that is your leg, that is your head. But where you are? It is your coat, it is your pant, it is your hand, it is your leg. Where you are? Do you know that? Can you say, any of the boys or girls here, where you are?

Boy: No.

Prabhupada: No? Oh. So you are not taught in this school where you are? Then what is that education? You do not know where you are.

Boy: I do know where I am. I'm in this school.

Prabhupada: You do not know, because as you say you are here, here your coat is there, your pant is there, your hand is there, your body is there, but you cannot explain where you are. All right. Sit down. I shall explain. (laughter) This is the defect of modern education. We are educated in a way in which we have misunderstood, "This is my body. This is my hand. This is my leg. This is my country. This is my mother. This is my father. This is my school." "This is my," I know. I have the concept of "my." But who is conceiving "my"? We have no information where it is. In Srimad-Bhagavatam it is said that yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke [SB 10.84.13]. Under misconception we understand my body as myself. I say, "It is my body," but I misidentify my body with myself. Is it not?

So the basic principle of mistake... Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke. According to Vedic literature, this body is prepared in three elements: fire, water, and clay. So I am not the combination of fire, water, and clay. Then I am this house, I am this room. So yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke [SB 10.84.13]. So basic principle of my knowledge is false, that I am considering this material body as "I am." And if the basic principle is wrong, then, in relationship with this body, because I am born in this land of America... "I am born" means my body is born. Or because my body is born from another body, my father and mother, so I think that "This body is my kinsman, and this country is mine," and so on. But the basic principle is false, that "I am considering, falsely identifying myself with this body. But I am within this body." That is a fact. And how can I understand how I am within this body? I can understand I am within this body by my feeling. If there is some pain or pleasure on my body, I can feel. I am conscious that I am there. In consciousness, I am there. And what is this consciousness? This consciousness is the reflection of real myself. Myself means soul. So as soon as the soul is within this body, there is perception of pains and pleasure, heat and cold, and so many things. That is consciousness. And as soon as the soul is out of this body, there is no more pain, pleasure, or heat and cold. A dead body, if you cut it into pieces, it will not protest. Therefore the soul, or consciousness, the symptom of soul, consciousness, is my self. My consciousness is the symptom of my real self. Similarly, there is another consciousness.

In the Bhagavad-gita there are description of two consciousness. Just like I am conscious throughout my body. If you pinch any part of my body, then I feel. That is my consciousness. So I am spread, my consciousness is spread, all over my body. This is explained in the Bhagavad-gita, avinasi tad viddhi yena sarvam idam tatam: "That consciousness which is spread all over this body, that is eternal." And antavanta ime deha nityasyoktah saririnah: [Bg. 2.18] "But this body is antavat," means imperishable. "This body is perishable, but that consciousness is imperishable, eternal." And that consciousness, or the soul, is transmigrating from one body to another. Just like we are changing dress. I may have this dress. You may have another dress. I may exchange your dress with me. So this changing of dress going on every moment. How? Now, these children, they are now so small. When they'll become young, this body will grow. We do not know... We say, "It is growing," but growing or not growing, this body will not remain. This body will go; another body will come. Medical science also says that every second we are changing blood corpuscles, and therefore change in the body is going on. So you say or I say that "Body is growing," but in the Vedic language it is said that "Body is changing." Just like a child is born so small from the mother's womb, and it changes body every second. Then he becomes a young child or a boy, then young man, then old man like me, and so on. In this way this changing, body changing, is going on. And the final change is called death. Death means... Just like the too much old garments cannot be used, similarly, this body is the garment of the soul. When it is..., no longer can be used, we have to accept another body. This is called transmigration of the soul.

Now, consciousness, the symptom... The presentation of the soul within this body is proved by consciousness. So from Bhagavad-gita we can understand there are two different qualities of consciousness. One consciousness is that I know about the pain and pleasure of my body, you know about the pains and pleasures of your body, but I do not know the pains and pleasure of your body; neither you know the pains and pleasure of my body. Therefore each and every one of us is individual soul, and our consciousness is limited within the body. Similarly, there is another consciousness and another body. That body is universal body, and that consciousness is universal. That universal consciousness knows your pains and pleasure, my pains and pleasure, and millions and trillions of living entities and bodies. He knows the pains and pleasures of everyone. These are the statements in the Bhagavad-gita. Ksetrajnam ca mam viddhi sarva-ksetresu bharata: "As individual soul is conscious, is, only of his body, similarly, I am also conscious of everyone's body." The Supreme Personality of Godhead says that "I am conscious of everyone's body," because He is all-pervading. He is all-pervading. That is all-pervading consciousness. So this all-pervading consciousness, or Krsna consciousness, we are preaching, consciousness, all-pervading consciousness, universal consciousness. So our consciousness, when it is dovetailed with universal consciousness, them our consciousness also becomes universal consciousness. What is that? I will give you one example. Just like a motorcar is running at hundred miles speed, and you are running on your cycle at ten miles speed. But if you catch that motorcar, you will also run in hundred miles speed. Although your capacity of bicycle is only ten miles speed, you also run at hundred miles speed. So unless we dovetail our activities with the supreme consciousness, or God consciousness, there cannot be equality, fraternity, or universality as we are hankering after. It is not possible. You can go on crying in the wilderness for universal fraternity, friendship, equality, but if you keep your individuality, individual consciousness, selfish consciousness, there is no possibility of peace or tranquillity in the world. Therefore people are very much anxious at the present moment for peace and tranquillity over the world, but they do not know how that peace can be attained. Peace can be attained. The formula is there in the Bhagavad-gita. Bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram [Bg. 5.29]. You can attain peace only when you understand that God is the proprietor of everything.

Actually, God is proprietor of everything. Now, take for example this house. This house is made of wood, stone, clay, sand, and everything, materials. But who is the proprietor of this wood, sand, clay? God is the proprietor. You cannot produce wood. You cannot produce sand. You cannot produce clay. You can simply work as a laborer to bring the clay, to bring the wood, to bring the stone and collect them and stand, make, construct a very big skyscraper house. But actually, the proprietor is God. This land, this land, America, it was lying before you came from Europe, before you colonized. And it may be, some days after, it will be lying here, and you shall have to go. Therefore who is the proprietor of this land? God is the proprietor. In this way, if we study that "Everything belongs to God. I also belong to God, my self, my body, my mind, my activity, my energy, everything..." Just take for example. I am claiming that "This is my hand," but if God withdraws the energy of the hand, your claim for "my hand" at once goes. So we have to develop that God consciousness and Krsna consciousness. When we speak of Krsna consciousness, it is God consciousness. People have become degenerated, forgetting God consciousness. Therefore in the present world there is no peace. Materially, they are very much advanced. They are advanced in so-called education, but they do not know what is "I." The everything, they are claiming, "my and mine," but they do not know what is "I."

So this consciousness, Krsna consciousness, is scientifically presented. It is not a sentiment. It is not a sentimental movement. It is very scientific movement. And the easiest process to come to this Krsna consciousness is by chanting this Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. So we are presenting very easy formula for coming to the Krsna consciousness platform. Just a moment before, we were dancing and chanting equally, the boys, the girls, the men, the women. So there is no distinction. Even if we do not understand the language, what is the meaning of Hare Krsna, but because it is transcendental, because it is spiritual, from the spiritual platform, everything is equal. We forget that we are American, or we are Indian, we are child, we are youth, or man, or woman, because in the spiritual platform there is no such bodily distinction. So our request to all the guardians of the boys and girls present here, or the teachers, that they should teach from the very beginning this Krsna consciousness, or God consciousness. Otherwise the future of the world is not very bright. It is recommended in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. We are having our class in our temple: the instruction of Prahlada Maharaja. Prahlada Maharaja was a five-years-old boy, and he was agitating this Krsna conscious movement in his school. The schoolteacher would not allow him to speak about God, but as soon as there was some recess and the child, the boy, five-years-old boy, he would take the opportunity, call his friends and speak on Krsna consciousness. And he said, kaumara acaret prajno dharman bhagavatan iha [SB 7.6.1]. The Krsna consciousness, or God consciousness, should be taught from the very beginning of education. This is the greatest drawback of modern education, that not only in your country or any country they have completely neglected what is meant by God.

Take a test

Prabhupada:

yena yavan yathadharmo
dharmo veha samihitah
sa eva tat-phalam bhunkte
tatha tavad amutra vai
 [SB 6.1.45]

So, one has to suffer or enjoy. There are two things. So that is according to our activities. That we can practically experience. If one is educated, naturally, he gets a good position, and if one is criminal, he gets another position. There is no difficulty to understand. So there are two things, dharma and adharma. Religiosity and irreligiosity. Religiosity means to abide by the orders of God and irreligiosity means to disobey the orders of God. That's all. Simple thing. But in this connection we must know what is the order of God, what is God, how He orders, how to execute, how we become fit for executing orders. These things -- these questions are there, but God is speaking personally, "This is My order," in the Bhagavad-gita. You'll find, very simple thing.

What Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita? First of all, He establishes Himself that "I am the Supreme Lord." Mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya [Bg. 7.7]. So, the Mayavadis, they also think that "I am also Krsna. I can also speak." No, that you cannot do. Just like we are singing this song daily, gopi-jana-vallabha giri-vara-dhari. It is... Krsna is playing with the gopis. The sahajiyas, they take it very easily. But giri-vara-dhari, oh, that is very difficult thing. He raised the whole Govardhana Hill in His finger; that nobody is imitating. But gopi-jana-vallabha, very easy. "You are gopi, I am Krsna. Let us enjoy." This is sahajiya. This is sahajiya. That is going on. Parakiya-rasa. All rascaldom is going on. But one should understand that here is Krsna. He can dance with the gopis and He can lift the Govardhana Hill also, simultaneously. That is also for pleasing the gopis. When there was incessant rainfall, all the inhabitants of Vrndavana became so disturbed, and they had no other friend than Krsna. So they appealed, "Krsna, do something!" "Yes!" Immediately, He raised the whole hill as umbrella. "Come on under this." So that is Krsna. So don't imitate Krsna, but hear Krsna, what says, then our life is successful. We cannot imitate God. We have to simply follow His order. That is dharma. And if you imitate Krsna, that is adharma. Don't try to imitate. There are two words in Sanskrit, anukarana, anusarana. Anukarana means imitation, and anusarana means follow. We have to execute anusarana, follow. Tejiyasam na dosaya. Tejiyasam na dosaya [SB 10.33.29].

The Pariksit Maharaja inquired that "Sukadeva Gosvami, Krsna, He came to establish dharma, but it appears that He danced with other's wife or other's daughter." According to Vedic civilization you cannot mix with any other woman except your wife. That is not allowed. So, according to the Vedic conception of life, it was not right thing that Krsna danced with other's wife or other's daughter. This question was put. Pariksit Maharaja said that Krsna, because He is God, He cannot do anything wrong. Just like in England, the constitution says, "The king can do no wrong." King cannot be subject to any law. Similarly, when Krsna danced with the gopis, it has got a deep meaning. Because they are all devotees, they did not know except Krsna, and they prayed to the Katyayani, although they are married, they prayed to Katyayani before they were married, that "Let Krsna become our husband." Krsna is so beautiful. Naturally there is attraction. Krsna means all-attractive. So... And they were not ordinary women. They are eternal consorts or associates of Krsna. Ananda-cin-maya-rasa-pratibhavitabhih. They are expansion of Krsna; they are not ordinary women. Expansion of Krsna. Radha-krsna-pranaya-vikrtih hladini-saktih asmad. The gopis, Radharani, they are expansion of the spiritual energy of Krsna. Don't think they are ordinary women. They are Krsna. Saktih saktimator abhedah. They are not different from Krsna. But to give Krsna pleasure, Krsna expands Himself by His spiritual energy, ananda hladini, spiritual energy, sandini hladini. That is the expansion of His pleasure potency. It is not that to imitate gopis. That is sahajiya. That is sahajiya. They are ananda-cin-maya-rasa-pratibhavitabhis tabhir ya eva nija-rupataya kalabhih goloka eva nivasaty akhilatma-bhuto [Bs. 5.37]. When Krsna wants pleasure, He is full spiritual, His pleasure is full spiritual. There is no question of material.

It has been very broadly described by Sri Jiva Gosvami. Read all this. Don't try to imitate. That is sahajiya. We should know the position of Krsna. His expansion of pleasure potency. Therefore Krsna's lila is put into the middle of the Tenth Canto. First of all, try to understand Krsna from the very beginning. Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. What is Krsna? Vasudeve, om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. So what is Vasudeva? Janmady asya yato. Here is the original source of everything. Aham sarvasya prabhavah mattah sarvam pravartate [Bg. 10.8]. First of all, try to understand Krsna. So therefore Vyasadeva has dedicated full nine cantos for understanding Krsna. Bahunam janmanam ante jnanavan mam prapadyate [Bg. 7.19]. Manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye [Bg. 7.3]. [break]...siddhis, they think of gopis. That is recommended in Caitanya-caritamrta, siddha-deha. Where is siddha? And siddha-deha means there is no more any material lusty desires. That is siddha-deha. Yad-avadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravinde nava-nava-rasa-dhamany udyatam rantum asit tad-avadhi bata nari-sangame smaryamane. So long we shall think of nari-sanga, association, unity with woman, we must consider this is material body. Not siddha body. Siddha body means anyabhilasita-sunyam [Brs. 1.1.11]. All material desires, zero. That is siddha body. So therefore it is very confidential. But to clear it, that "How Krsna accepted to dance with so many gopis," this was for clearance.

In that question, you'll find, Sukadeva Gosvami has answered that unless one is liberated, he should not think of it even. Should not think of it. And he has given the example that, you have read, that Lord Siva, when there was churning, the poison came out, he took it and kept it. But if we imitate Lord Siva, that "He kept, he also drunk, so let me drink also, let me smoke ganja," no. You cannot do. Tejiyasam na dosaya [SB 10.33.29]. The example is given: those who are very, very powerful, they are not contaminated. Just like the sun. Sun is so powerful that it can soak water from the urine, or from the stool, but it still is sun. But if you imitate sun and you... Nowadays, it is going on. The urine is turned into water and they drink. And from stool they are getting fat. So these things are going on. But we should not try to imitate. The sum and substance is Krsna cannot be contaminated. Apapa-viddham. In the Isopanisad, you'll find. Tejiyasam. Just like sun is never contaminated. From the whole universe, the sun is soaking water from any filthy place. But the filthy place is becoming purified by the sun rays. That is possible by the sun.

So similarly, we cannot imitate Krsna. That is papa, adharma. Dharma is to abide by the orders of Krsna. That is very simple. And if we do that then we become qualified to go back to home, back to Godhead. Very simple thing. It doesn't require much education. Simply it requires a purified mind, that "I shall execute it honestly." That much qualification is sufficient. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. This is Krsna's law and order. Krsna does not say anything which is very difficult to execute, because we cannot do it. Krsna asks from you very simple thing. Not that Krsna is asking from you very things which we cannot supply. No. We can supply. Anyone, any poor man, any illiterate man, any poor man or any rich man. Everyone, it is open to everyone. Mam hi partha vyapasritya ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah. Krsna consciousness is not forbidden to anyone, even papa-yoni.

mam hi partha vyapasritya
ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah
striyo vaisyas tatha sudras
te 'pi yanti param gatim
 [Bg. 9.32]

Kim punar brahmanah punya bhakta rajarsayas tatha [Bg. 9.33]. Bhajasva mam. This is Krsna's instruction. Krsna says, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji: "Simply always think of Me." This is the law and order. Who cannot think of Krsna? Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Very easy. Where is the difficulty? This is always thinking of Krsna. Man-mana, bhava mad-bhakto. And unless one is devotee, he cannot spend time in that way, "Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna." Only the devotees can do. And mad-yaji, to worship Krsna. So if somebody says, "I am very poor man. I cannot construct such a nice temple or offer Krsna so many nice foodstuffs," Krsna says, "No, no need." Patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati [Bg. 9.26]. "Come on." You do not require. If you have money, then spend it for Krsna, as much as you can. Then if you don't spend, if you think, "Krsna wants patram puspam; the money I shall keep in the bank for my pleasure," then Krsna will cheat you also. If you want to cheat Krsna, Krsna is the greatest cheater. Then you'll be cheated. Don't be cheater. Simply, fervently, very honestly, obey the orders of Krsna. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam. Four things. And what is the result? Mam evaisyasi asamsayah: [Bg. 18.65] "Without any doubt, you'll come back to Me." What do you want more? That Krsna is so nice.

So spread this movement all over your country. Your country is... By the grace of Krsna, everything is there. And the first qualification is that you are not poverty-stricken. So take the instruction of Krsna and be happy. Open similar temples all over your country. Your country is not poor. You can establish such temples, hundreds and thousands. And similarly assemble, hear Krsna's instruction, and see how happy you'll become.

Thank you very much. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Nitai: "Those persons who are materially engrossed, being blind to the knowledge of the Ultimate Truth, have many things as subject matter for hearing in the human society, O Emperor."

Prabhupada:

srotavyadini rajendra
nrnam santi sahasrasah
apasyatam atma-tattvam
grhesu grha-medhinam
 [SB 2.1.2]

Now, subject matter of hearing long, long, very... Not long, long, say, about sixty, seventy years ago, one big politician of India, Madanmohan Mayabhya,(?) he came to see my Guru Maharaja. So he was inquiring about our activities. So he was informed, amongst other activities, my Guru Maharaja was publishing papers monthly in English, in Bengali, in Hindi, in Oriya, in Assamese, and one Bengali daily, Nadiya Prakash. So this politician was surprised that "Oh, you are publishing daily a Bengali paper?" "Yes. Why you are surprised?" He was surprised. He was politician. He was thinking that "What one may speak of God, or Krsna, daily in a paper?" He was surprised. Because they think that "Sometimes we go to the temple, ‘O God, give us our daily bread,' " finished God's business. And my Guru Maharaja replied that "Why you are surprised? This Calcutta city is most insignificant part of this universe."

Now, Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita that "The whole material world is situated in one part of My energy." Ekamsena sthito jagat. When Arjuna asked about the opulence of Krsna, He was describing. And He summarized,

athava bahunaitena
kim jnatena tavarjuna
vistabhyaham idam krtsnam
ekamsena sthito jagat

"How much I shall go on speaking to you? Just try to understand about My potency, that this whole material world is sustained in one part of My energy." The spiritual world is the three-fourths part. Suppose Krsna's energy is acting, one unit. So out of that, one-fourth unit is exhibited, this material world. And the material world is... What is that material world? Now,

yasya prabha prabhavato jagad-anda-koti-
kotisv asesa-vasudadhi-vibhuti-bhinnam
tad brahma niskalam anantam asesa-bhutam
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
 [Bs. 5.40]

The, the Brahman effulgence being spread, in some corner of this Brahman effulgence, there is mahat-tattva, material energy. And that material energy means... That is described in another place:

yasyaika-nisvasita-kalam athavalambya
jivanti loma-vilaja jagad-anda-nathah
visnur mahan sa iha yasya kala-viseso
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
 [Bs. 5.48]

The material world means innumerable universes are coming out through the breathing of Maha-Visnu. Innumerable universes. We cannot account for one universe in which we are. There are innumerable planets. Everyone has experience in stars and planets. This is one universe. And such universes are coming out, millions, through the breathing period of Maha-Visnu. When He exhales, they come out. When He inhales, they go within. That is the creation and not creation. Yasyaika-nisvasita-kalam athavalambya jivanti loma-vilaja... [Bs. 5.48]

So the purpose was that this material world is only a manifestation, exhibition, of one-fourth energy of Krsna. And within this material world, there are so many universes. And each and every universe, there are so many planets. So this is one of the planets, in which we are living. And in this planet, there are so many cities -- Calcutta, Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Paris, London, and so many, hundreds and thousands. And each and every city, there are newspapers. And each newspaper is publishing three, four editions daily. So this is the most insignificant planet. Still, there are so many news to hear. Therefore it is said here, srotavyadini rajendra nrnam santi sahasrasah: [SB 2.1.2]  "Millions and millions, subject matter for hearing." This is a fact. Every paper is publishing three, four editions daily, especially in the Western countries. So if they have got so much news in the material world in this insignificant planet, just imagine how much news are there in the three-fourths' manifestation of His energy. So my Guru Maharaja said that "You are surprised, Mr. Mayabhya, that we are publishing a paper daily. So we can publish every minute a paper. Unfortunately, there is no customer." They have customer for using this newspaper, but our news, we have to canvass, "Will you kindly take this? Will you kindly take this." They are not interested. They're interested in this material news -- Radio, paper, magazine, edition after edition. Therefore it is said...

This is the meaning of srotavyadini rajendra nrnam santi sahasrasah [SB 2.1.2].  So they have no time to read a little news we are giving about God in the Back to Godhead. They have no... Why? Now apasyatam atma-tattvam [SB 2.1.2]. They do not know what is atma, what is the active principle of all these activities. They do not know. The superficially... Bahir-art... Na te viduh svartha-gatim durasaya ye, durasaya... What is that? Na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah [SB 7.5.31]. Durasaya, they have got so many news to hear with a hope -- means useless hope -- that they will be able to exist here and be happy. Just like your arch, this Napoleon Arch. Napoleon was conquering all over Europe, and he thought that he would be able to enjoy this. But where is Napoleon? The arch is there. That's all. This is the position. But he worked so hard. Not only he. Everyone is working. The arch will remain, because a stone, but he's finished. He's finished. This is called apasyatam atma-tattvam [SB 2.1.2]. Because these people, they do not know what is really reality. Real reality. They are simply after so-called reality. It is very important point. Try to understand. Atma-tattvam, one who does not know what is atma, what is soul, the nature of soul...

Therefore, in the Bhagavad-gita, Krsna first of all begins the constitution of the atma, or spirit soul. He begins. When He began to teach Arjuna Bhagavad-gita, the A-B-C-D lesson was to make him convinced about the soul within the body. That is called atma-tattvam. And nobody knows. Therefore, bahir-artha-maninah:  they are accepting this external feature. Just like we have got external feature. We can understand very easily that this body, this body is external feature. Real "I" am within. As soon as I go away from this body, this external feature, as good as the garbage in the street. That they do not understand. They are busy piling garbage. "Bring more garbage, more garbage." And this is the working capacity. Bahir-artha-maninah.  They think, "This garbage will save me." Very important question. Apasyatam atma-tattvam [SB 2.1.2]. The atma-tattvam means "I am now within this garbage for the present. And after leaving this, in this garbage, I pile up so many other garbages. And in this way, working uselessly the whole life, then I transmigrate from this body to another garbage body." That I do not know. This is called apasyatam atma-tattvam [SB 2.1.2]. Apasyatam means "not seeing." A means "not," and pasyatam means "seeing, one who sees." He's seeing, "This garbage is everything." He does not see atma-tattvam.

Apasyatam atma-tattvam grhesu [SB 2.1.2]. Grhesu means grha means home. So you can take this body as home. Because I am, you are all living within this body. So this is also home. And then again, expanded, I am living in this planet. So this is also home. And again living within this universe. That is also home. Or I have got a little home, apartment, ten feet square. That's all. That is also home. So we have got attachment for this home, ten feet by ten feet or millions of feet on millions... This is home, within the compact. We living entities, we are within this home. Take this whole universe, apart from other universe, this universe. This is also home because we're living here. And we are changing, from this place to that place. Suppose I have come from India. From Bombay, I have come to Paris. This is all within the home, within the universe, or within this planet. So we see people are very busy. Seventy miles speed, they're driving car. But within the Paris, within the Paris, they may go seventy miles, eighty miles, but they cannot go beyond. That, our one countryman, Rabindranath Tagore... So perhaps you heard his name. He was a big poet. So when he was in London, so he saw that people are very, walking very fast. So he remarked that "These people are walking very fast. But there is a very small country. They'll fall down on the sea." You see?

So this is going on. (laughs) A dog in the park is jumping very fast, walking. But as soon as the master, "Come one. Come one," immediately, "Yes, sir." "Give me your neck." "Yes, sir." Chain. Chain. He's thinking that he's very free, but as soon as the master calls, immediately he has to submit. This is our position. We are very busy, but the master is the material nature. Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duraty... [Bg. 7.14]. The fact is that we are under the stringent laws of material nature. We have no freedom. That we do not know. We are struggling so much. War has been waged in, all over the world, especially in Europe, for freedom. You have got that freedom statue. And in America also, there is freedom. But where is freedom, sir? That they do not know. Why? Apasyatam atma-tattvam [SB 2.1.2]. They do not know what is freedom and whose freedom. That they do not know. Therefore they have created so many newspapers for freedom. The so-called freedom. But there is no freedom. Even big, big leaders, they have no freedom. What we are?

Therefore Krsna points out in the Bhagavad-gita that real freedom is when you get freedom from four different problems. What is that? Janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi-duhkha-dosanudarsanam. If you get freedom from these four things -- no more death, no more birth, no more old age, old age, and no more disease -- that is freedom. But where is that freedom? The so-called scientists, big, big scientists, they have very scientifically advanced, but they had no freedom from death. They had to die on a fixed-up date. Professor Einstein or any other big, big scientist, they could not manufacture any scientific instrument and keep it in the custody of his student, that "As soon as I die, you just apply this machine. I shall come alive again." Where is that freedom? So this so-called scientific improvement, advancement in civilization, it is just like jumping like the dog. That's all. It has no value. Real value is to understand atma-tattvam, "What I am? Why death is imposed upon me? I do not wish to die. Why old age is imposed upon me? I do not wish to become old man or old woman. I wish to remain a beautiful young..." "No, sir, that is not possible." Then where is your freedom? What for you are jumping so much? As soon as the master will call "Yes, sir. Bind me..."

So you are completely under the nature's control. Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14].

prakrteh kriyamanani
gunaih karmani sarvasah
ahankara-vimudhatma
kartaham iti manyate
 [Bg. 3.27]

Prakrteh, prakrti, nature, is pulling by the ear, "Come here." "Yes, sir." "Come here." "Yes, sir." And he's freedom. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah. He is completely under the control of the modes of material nature. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani, ahankara-vimudhatma. This is called false egotism: "I am something." "I am Napoleon Bonaparte," "I am Mussolini," "I am Hitler." This is ahankara-vimudhatma. Fool, rascal. They are thinking like that. "No freedom, sir. No freedom."

prakrteh kriyamanani
gunaih karmani sarvasah
ahankara-vimudhatma
kartaham iti manyate
 [Bg. 3.27]

Being puffed-up with false prestige, he's thinking, "I am something. I can do something, I am..." This is the disease.

So for them, these newspapers are very useful. But one who is fixed up in atma-tattvam, Bhagavata,, "I am Brahman. I am not anything of this material world," for them, there is no need of this so-called news of newspaper. There is no... Simply, they should try to understand Krsna. That is the only business. There is no other business. And as soon as you understand Krsna, Krsna assures, janma karma me divyam yo janati tattvatah. If you simply try to under... Here is Krsna. If you simply try to understand Krsna... And how you'll understand? By service. By service. Krsna has agreed that "I'll accept your service." Therefore He has come. You cannot serve Krsna in His universal form. Now Krsna has agreed, as you have got limited potency, you can touch Krsna. You can touch His lotus feet. You can make dress for Krsna with devotion. You can put the dress on Krsna. You can prepare, according to your capacity, foodstuffs. You can offer to Krsna, so Krsna will eat. He says, patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati, tad aham asnami.

So Krsna is so kind that He, although He is all-pervading, universal, He has agreed to accept your service just to give you liberation from this misunderstanding, no atma-tattvam. This is Krsna consciousness movement, that Krsna, God, is great. How great He is, you cannot imagine. But still, He has agreed to accept your service, becoming small. That is greatness. In the material world, if something is big, very big, he cannot become, or it cannot become small. Just like, say, for... Elephant is very big animal. You ask the elephant, "Please become like an ant." "Oh, that is not possible, sir. That is not possible." But God is so great that although He's universal, He can enter into the atom. That is... Anor aniyan mahato mahiyan: "Greater than the greatest, smaller than the smallest." That is God. Anor aniyan mahato... Andantara-stha-paramanu... In the Brahma-samhita it is said, eko 'py asau racayitum jagad-anda-kotim yac-chaktir asti jagad-anda-caya yad-antah, andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham [Bs. 5.35]. Eko 'py asau. One portion of Krsna, Paramatma, just to create this material world, He has entered in the mahat-tattva as Maha-Visnu, and He entered within the universe as Garbhodakasayi-Visnu, He has entered everyone's heart as Supersoul, Ksirodakasayi-Visnu, and He has entered into the atom -- although He is so great. So it is Krsna's mercy that He can become smaller than the smallest and the greater than the greatest.

So we cannot capture the greater than the greatest. That is not possible. Therefore it is His kindness that He has become just to be handled by you. This is called arca-murti. Arca-vigraha. The Deity worship means arca-vigraha. Because the devotional service, one of the items of devotional service: arcanam.

sravanam kirtanam visnoh
smaranam pada-sevanam
arcanam vandanam dasyam
sakhyam atma-nivedanam
 [SB 7.5.23]

So you hear about Krsna, you chant about Krsna, you memorize or remember about Krsna. You worship Krsna, the Deity, arcanam. You offer prayers to Krsna. There are nine different ways. So you just try to understand Krsna in nine processes or either of, some of the processes, or one process only, Krsna will agree. Krsna is so kind. And as soon as you understand Krsna, His nature, then, actually, you become liberated. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9]. This is the process. Real problem is how to get out of this material existence. If we remain attached to this material existence, either in this body or in the society or in the nationalism or in the greater, greater, greater -- you make greater -- but that is your bondage.

So one should be careful to understand the position of the soul, and how he can go back to home, back to Godhead, again meet the Supersoul, Krsna, and live there permanently with blissful life and full of knowledge. This is wanted.

Thank you very much. (end)

"Krsna Will Bless You"

11 June 68 , Montreal

(end)
