Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada:

na sadhayati mam yogah
na sankhyam dharma uddhava
na svadhyayas tapas tyagah
yatha bhaktir mamorjita

So if you want God, Krsna, then there is no other way except this devotional service. Neither yoga, neither philosophical speculation, neither ritualistic performances, nor study in the Vedic literature, neither penance, austerities... All these formulas which are recommended for transcendental realization, they may help us to advance to a certain extent, but if you want personal touch with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then you have to adopt this devotional service, Krsna consciousness. There is no other way.

So Lord Caitanya, giving evidence from Srimad-Bhagavatam... He is giving:

bhaktyaham ekaya grahyah
sraddhayatma priyah satam
bhaktih punati man-nistha
sva-pakan api sambhavat

There is another verse in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. The Lord says... The same chapter in which Lord Krsna instructed Uddhava... Uddhava was also one of His cousin-brothers in the family. He was a great devotee, Uddhava. He was more advanced than Arjuna. There are different grades of devotees. The first-class devotees were the gopis, the damsels of Vrndavana. Nobody could be compared with their devotional service. So next were Uddhava, then Arjuna. There are different grades of devotees also. So Uddhava was also a great devotee of (the) Lord, and he was also instructed similarly, just like Arjuna was instructed. So the Lord says to Uddhava, bhaktya aham ekaya grahyah. Ekaya: simply by devotional service, one, this one method... God is one, and to achieve Him, the process is also one. Just like in your body there are many holes, nine holes, nine holes: these two nostrils, two ear, two eyes, one mouth, and genital and evacuation, these nine holes. So if you want to supply foodstuff within your body, that is the one way: this is the mouth. There is no other way. You cannot push the foodstuff through ears or eyes or genital. No. That is not possible. Therefore, similarly, if you want God, then the one way, bhaktya aham ekaya... Ekaya. The foolish person says that "Whatever path you may adopt, you will go to God." There are certain rascals. They say like that. But this is misleading, completely misleading. You cannot, I mean to say, reach God by any other means except this means, this bhaktya aham ekaya. It is clearly stated, ekaya. Ekaya means "only one." There is no second process. And the Bhagavad-gita also, it is stated -- you will find in the Eighteenth Chapter -- bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah [Bg. 18.55]. Tattvatah. Tattvatah means in fact.

So you... Impersonal conception of Godhead, localized conception of Godhead or universal form of God, pantheism, monism -- they are not perfect. If you want to know perfectly, then bhakti... It is stated in everywhere, in all Vedic literatures, evidentially in Bhagavad-gita, which is present before us, in Srimad-Bhagavatam, Caitanya-caritamrta. Everywhere you will find this only way, that devotional service. Bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah [Bg. 18.55]. Tattvatah means "in fact." Partially you can know, but in complete... Of course, God cannot be known in complete, but the highest point a human being or a living entity can reach... That, the only process, through bhakti... Bhaktyaham ekaya grahyah sraddhayatma priyah satam. Sraddha atma priyah satam. That bhakti, that process of devotional service, is very dear to the actual transcendentalist, very dear. Bhaktih punati man-nistha. Man-nistha. To know simply "I believe in God," that is not sufficient. The ultimate goal is to attain very intimate relationship or love of Godhead. That is required. Of course, to know, to believe in God, to accept God, that is all right. It is better than the atheist. But that is not end. You must develop yourself. You must... You should not simply make God as your order-supplier, but you should be order-supplier. When I become order-supplier to God, that is my perfection. And so long I keep God as my order-supplier, that is not bhakti. Generally, people keep God as his order-supplier: "O God, give us our daily bread," "O God, I am in distress, "O God, I am in difficulty, "O God, I am..." God supplies them. God is supplying. Eko bahunam vidadhati kaman. But that is not ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is that you should supply God. God will be dependent on you. That is bhakti.

Just like Yasodamayi. Yasodamayi, he (she) was so advanced in devotion that God became dependent on her. God appeared as his (her) child. As the child always remains dependent on the mercy of the mother, similarly Krsna before His foster mother Yasodamayi just remained just like dependent. Mother said, "My dear child, if You become more naughty, then I shall chastise You." And God is crying. You see? These are the relationship between God and the devotee. You see? One who chastises the whole universe, whole creation, He is afraid of His mother. He becomes dependent as He likes. It is said in the sastra that "When My devotee thinks Me dependent on him, oh, I like that. I like that." People always worship God as the sublime, but the devotee, they do not worship. They want to serve God as dependent. Just like mother serves the child as dependent. There is no purpose. The mother is satisfied simply by keeping the child in perfect order. Yes. There is no purpose. Similarly, when we shall be inclined to see that He is always satisfied, that is devotion. Then you can have God in your grip. You see? God is so kind, Krsna is so kind, that He becomes just... Ajito 'pi. Nobody can conquer Him, but He becomes conquered by this kind of devotional service. You see? Ajito 'pi jito 'py asi. He becomes conquered. This is the process of conquering. What is the use of becoming one with God? You can conquer Him. You can have Him within your grips. Such is the process, devotional service. It is stated here. Ataeva. Therefore, Lord Caitanya concludes, ataeva 'bhakti'-krsna-praptyera upaya.  Therefore, if you want Krsna, then bhakti, the devotional service, is the only way.

ataeva 'bhakti'-krsna-praptyera upaya
'abhidheya bali' tare sarva-sastre gaya

Abhidheya means that is the transaction.

So in this life, while we are in the material world, so we have our material body. So this devotional service, Krsna consciousness, doing everything in Krsna consciousness, this is just like, what is called, apprenticeship to reach that highest stage. The same thing will be there in your liberated stage in the spiritual kingdom. But here, by the order of the sastra, by the guidance of the spiritual master, you are being trained up as apprentice. This is called abhidheya, abhidheya, practice, practice. But even in practice you will feel that "I am making progress." It is such a thing. 'Abhidheya' bali' tare sarva-sastre gaya. And,

dhana paile yaiche sukha-bhoga phala paya
sukha-bhoga haite duhkha apani palaya
taiche bhakti-phale krsne prema upajaya
prema krsnasvada haile bhava nasa paya

Very important passage. Just note it carefully. Now, by apprenticeship, by practice, if one sincerely follows this practice, then what is the result? Dhana paile yaiche sukha-bhoga phala paya. Just like a poor man, if he gets sufficient money, then at once his all distress is over, at once, immediately. Simultaneously, as soon as the sun is in the sky, at once the darkness is gone. Just in the morning, a little, not sun directly, but even there is sunshine far away, immediately the darkness goes away. I am in distress; I am in poverty-stricken. Suppose I get immediately some large amount of money. Immediately my distress gone. So exactly like that, dhana paile yaiche sukha-bhoga phala paya, then automatically he becomes happy, a poor man when he gets money. Similarly, as soon as we have little taste of this devotional service, at once all our miserable life becomes happy at once. Yes. Sukha-bhoga haite duhkha apani palaya. And if there is happiness, where is the question of misery? If there is light, where there is question of darkness?

So a person in Krsna consciousness, he cannot be in distress of material miseries. It goes automatically, automatically. Taiche bhakti-phale krsne prema upajaya. Similarly, by execution of this devotional service, gradually you develop love of God, love of God. And preme krsnasvada haile bhava nasa...  And as soon as you get a taste for Krsna, you at once lose all this nonsense taste, culminating into sex life. The material taste means we want to gratify senses in so many ways, and the supermost point is sex life. So as soon as you get into touch with Krsna and you develop Krsna love, all this nonsense finished. Then you are liberated. And so long you are attached even to a pinch of material taste, there is no question of liberation from material miseries; you have to continue this transmigration from one body to another, and body means material miseries. The material body means material misery. You may get the body of a king or you may get the body of Brahma or Indra, Candra or the ant or the insignificant animal. Any body, any material body, that is meant for miseries, miseries, tapa-traya, threefold, threefold material miseries, and, besides that threefold miseries, ultimately birth, death, old age and diseases.

So to develop love of Krsna means that is real liberation. And that love of Krsna begins after many, many births of cultural life. Bahunam janmanam ante, vasudevah sarvam iti sa mahatma su-durlabhah [Bg. 7.19]. When one surrenders unto Krsna, that is the beginning of his real life. And as he makes progress, then he realizes -- I have several times discussed this point -- adau sraddha. First thing is that "I must get myself out of this material contamination." That is called sraddha. "In this very life I shall realize." So this sraddha, this belief and this determination, as you make more and more perfect, you make advance. You make advance. Not as official, not as makeshow, but really... Adau sraddha tato sadhu-sangah. Then, as you are determined, so your taste for associating with devotees... Just like we are now associating with Lord Krsna's, Lord Caitanya's, teaching. He is a great devotee. This is called sadhu-sanga [Cc. Madhya 22.83]. Adau sraddha tato sadhu-sanga tatha bhajana-kriya. Then bhajana-kriya, how to execute. Now Caitanya Mahaprabhu is teaching. You will gradually know what is the bhajana-kriya, how to execute devotional service. That we shall come later on. Tato anartha-nivrttih syat. And as soon as your devotional service, prescribed duties, are discharged, you become free from all material contamination. That is the test. Tato anartha-nivrttih syat tato nistha. Then you become firmly convinced. Tato nistha tato ruci. Then taste. Athasakti: then you cannot give it up, at any circumstances cannot give it up. Athasaktis tato bhavas: then you become fully in samadhi, in trance. Sadhakanam ayam premnah pradur... These are the steps of attaining love of God. Love of God is not that you can immediately go and purchase from the market in the store. You have to practice it. The love is there within you. It is not artificial, neither an imposition by some person or... No. It is already there. If you kindly become submissively hearing this, by hearing only, and if you practice, it will be very nice and quickly we shall develop.

So hearing and practicing. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau [Brs. 1.2.234]. Kirtana, sravanam kirtanam jihvadau. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau. The tongue especially meant, tongue. Tongue should be engaged, jihva. How? Tongue should be engaged in glorifying. That is one business. And tongue should be engaged for eating krsna-prasada. These two things, chanting and eating. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau. As soon as you submissively engage your tongue... Just see the technique: no other body, no other part. Tongue has been especially mentioned. And what is the business of tongue? I am speaking with the help of tongue. If there was no tongue, I could not talk with you. And another, I taste. So engage your tasting capacity of the tongue in krsna-prasada and engage your tongue in talking of Krsna. Then this is the process. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva sphuraty adah.  And as you engage them in this process, God will reveal to you. You cannot order God, "Please come and be stand up. I shall see You." He is not your servant. You have to please Him by your service attitude. Then He will reveal to you what He is. And that is bhakti.  That is bhakti: taiche bhakti-phale krsne prema upajaya. If you execute the devotional service, then you develop that love. And as soon as krsna-prema asvada haile, bhava nasa paya... And as soon as you develop, the more the proportionate way of, you develop love of Krsna, love of God, proportionately, you are free from this material contamination. When you are perfectly in Krsna love, you are perfectly free from material contamination. This is the way of liberation.

daridrya-nasa, bhava-ksaya -- premera 'phala' naya
prema-sukha-bhoga-mukhya prayojana haya

So one should not think that "Now I am materially happy. My all distress, my all poverty, has gone by Krsna, by devotional service of Krsna," or "I have become liberated." No. These are by-products. To become liberated and to become materially happy by prosecution of Krsna consciousness is a by-product. You have to attempt further thing. And what is that? Prema-sukha-bhoga: you shall be absorbed in love of Krsna. That is the... That is here recorded that that should be your ultimate goal of life. So we should not stop: "Oh, now I am very happy. Now I have no material miseries," or "I am liberated. Now this material contamination does not affect me." No. When you will be so much absorbed in love of God, just like Lord Caitanya showed... Caksusa pravrsayitam sunyayitam jagat sarvam govinda-virahena me, govinda-virahena me: "Oh, I am crying. Just My tears coming, just torrents of rain from My eyes." Sunyayitam jagat sarvam: "I am seeing everything vacant." Why? Govinda-virahena me: "In separation of Govinda." That is highest stage of life. Govinda-virahena me. Just like in this material world, if you love somebody and if he is dead and passed and gone, you see everything vacant. That is a test of that govinda viraha. But we are foolish. We know that everything will be finished here. Why should I give so much attachment to this nonsense? Give your attachment to Krsna. He will never be finished. So that is love of Krsna. We have to attain that stage. Yes. That is the perfection of life.

Thank you. (aside:) You are going? (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Pradyumna: "Actually Lord Rsabhadeva had no material body, but due to yogamaya, He considered His body material, and therefore, because He played like an ordinary human being, He gave up the mentality of identifying with it. Following this principle, He began to wander all over the world. While traveling, He came to the province of Karnata in South India and passed through Konka, Venka and Kutaka. He had no plan to travel this way, but He arrived near Kutakacala and entered a forest there. He placed stones within His mouth and began to wander through the forest, naked and with His hair disheveled like a madman."

Prabhupada:

Tasya ha va evam mukta-lingasya bhagavata rsabhasya.
 [SB 5.6.7]

Bhagavan, in His any form, He is mukta-linga. As we have got linga, deha, linga, this material body, and we have got our spiritual body also... The spiritual body is covered by the material coating. This is not our actual body. But in the case of Supreme Personality of Godhead, there is no such difference. Deha, dehi. As we have got difference... Dehino 'smin yatha deha. Deha and dehi. Dehi means the owner of the body. Just like I say, "It is my body." I don't say, "It is I body." Everyone has got this experience. Even a child, ask him, pointing out to the finger. He will say, "It is my finger." Nobody says, "I finger," because there is difference between the body and the spirit soul. This is to be understood.

Spiritual education means, beginning is, to understand that "I am not this body." Aham brahmasmi: "I am beyond this body." But in the case of Krsna or His different expansion, plenary expansion, there is no such difference, deha dehi.

prakrta kariya mane visnu-kalevara
aparadha nahi ara inhara upara(?)

Caitanya Mahaprabhu has said, "Any rascal" -- of course, "rascal" he did not say; I say -- that "Anyone who considers the body of Krsna is prakrta" -- prakrta means material -- "that is the greatest offense." The Mayavadis, they say so. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, mayavadi haya krsne aparadhi. They think that when... "God is impersonal, but when He becomes a person, He accepts the material body." That is wrong. Here it is said that mukta-lingasya bhagavata rsabhasya. It is no difference. Even a big scholar, while writing comments on Bhagavad-gita, when Krsna says, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65], he warns the reader, "It is not to the person. The soul or the spirit within the person." Means he is thinking Krsna as ordinary person, and he's a big scholar. This is going on.

Krsna condemns, avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritah [Bg. 9.11]. Anyone who thinks that Krsna has a different soul... No. Krsna and Krsna's so-called soul, the same thing. There is no difference. That is the... Otherwise how Krsna can lift, as a seven-years-old boy, Govardhana Hill? Is it possible by this material body? No. That is not possible. This is common sense. But they cannot understand Krsna, mudha. Avajananti mam mudha. They call, "It is mythology. Mythology. Everything mythology." First of all they cannot find out what is God, and when God comes, shows His opulences, these rascals say, "It is mythology." What God will do? He comes before you. He displays His mighty opulences. He expanded Himself into sixteen thousand form. "Mythology." So what can I do? What Krsna can do? Advaitam acyutam anadim ananta-rupam adyam purana-purusam nava-yauvanam ca [Bs. 5.33]. Sastra says He has got ananta-rupam, but still one. There is no difference. They cannot understand the Absolute Truth, and they like to comment upon it foolishly.

Therefore Sanatana Gosvami says that don't hear anything from the Mayavadi, avaisnava. Mayavadi means avaisnava. Sanatana Gosvami says that sravanam na kartavyam putam hari-kathamrtam. Sravanam na kartavyam: "Those who are not Vaisnavas, from them do not hear the transcendental topics." Avaisnava-mukhodgirnam putam hari-katham, sravanam na kartavyam. He has warned, "Don't hear. Who is not a Vaisnava, don't hear from him at least Gita, Bhagavatam. Or any sastra, don't hear," because they do not know what is actually the position. Krsna also says, naham prakasah sarvasya yogamaya-sama... [Bg. 7.25]. Here it is said, yogamaya-vasanaya. Atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih  [Cc. Madhya 17.136]. These blunt senses, they cannot appreciate what is Krsna. Yogamaya-samavrtah. He's covered. To the nondevotees, He is covered. To the devotees -- sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva -- He reveals: "Yes, I am here like this." So do not think... Caitanya Mahaprabhu has warned, prakrta kariya mane visnu kalevara, aparadha nahi ara inhara upara(?). So long we are aparadhi, offender, there is no possibility of understanding Krsna. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore has warned, that "Don't hear about Krsna or any transcendental subject matter from a Mayavadi." Mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva-nasa [Cc. Madhya 6.169]. If you hear from a Mayavadi, then your advancement in devotional service is finished. Haya sarva-nasa. You should be very, very careful.

avaisnava-mukhodgirnam
putam hari-kathamrtam
sravanam na kartavyam
sarpocchista-payo yatha

If one is not Vaisnava, don't be liberal, that "Oh, what is the wrong? He is talking Bhagavatam." But he does not know who can speak Bhagavatam. Here in Vrndavana there is a big Mayavadi sannyasi. He speaks on Bhagavatam and speaks all nonsense, but there is a big crowd go to hear him. Yes.

So Mayavadis are attractive. They are very educated. They can put things in jugglery of words. That capacity they have got. So people become amazed, and almost everyone... So therefore they are not very much pleased with this movement, that "Krsna is God." We are preaching, and all full of Mayavadis, they are thinking, "What this nonsense is doing? Krsna..." They think Krsna is maya. Visnu-kalevara maya. Krsna says, mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya [Bg. 7.7]. Avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritah [Bg. 9.11]. Aham sarvasya prabhavo mattah sarvam pravartate [Bg. 10.8]. Repeatedly He is saying what He is, and He is personally present and all the acaryas confirming. Even Sankaracarya, he also says sa bhagavan svayam krsna. Narayanah parah avyaktat. Don't bring Narayana in this material world. So... Bhaja govindam bhaja govindam bhaja govindam mudha mate. "You rascal, you have studied so much grammar. Now give up all this. Bhaja govindam, govinda bhaja." Nahi nahi raksati dukrn-karane: "Your grammatical knowledge, du-pratyaya, krn-pratyaya, lin-pratyaya, din-pratyaya, oh, this will not do." Bhaja govindam mudha-mate, prapte sannihite karana, hita kala-marane: "This is... Jugglery of words will not save you. This is my final instruction." Mayavadam asac-chastram pracchanam bauddham ucyate. Kalau brahma-murtina. He has some business to do that, but actually, we should not hear about..., especially Srimad-Bhagavatam. Therefore Sripada Sankaracarya avoided to write any comments on Srimad-Bhagavatam. He has written comments on Bhagavad-gita, but he has completely avoided to write any comment on Bhagavata because he knew that "I am doing the wrong thing. How can I touch Srimad-Bhagavatam?" Srimad-bhagavatam amalam puranam yad vaisnavanam priyam. He has purposefully avoided. And the acarya, other acaryas like Sri Ramanujacarya, Madhvacarya, Visnu Svami and up to Caitanya Mahaprabhu, everyone has accepted, Srimad-bhagavatam amalam puranam.

Amalam means there is no material contamination, pure description. Therefore Vyasadeva, from the very beginning he says that dharmah projjhita-kaitavo 'tra paramo nirmatsaranam: [SB 1.1.2] "This book is not meant for the person who is envious." Envious... You begin enviousness from Krsna. Krsna says, sarva dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. The envious person will say, "Oh, this is too much. Why shall I surrender to Krsna? I am also Krsna. I am also God. This is too much." This is rascaldom. The actual fact is that we are eternal servant of Krsna, we have forgotten it, and therefore we have become servant of maya. We are suffering, and Krsna, out of His kindness, He comes to prove that the living entities are eternal servant and He is the eternal master. Still, because they are contaminated, contaminated by the yogamaya, contaminated by maya, mahamaya... Mahamaya. Ya devi sarva-bhutesu nidra-rupena samsrita(?). Mahamaya. This material energy is described in the Chandi, ya devi sarva-bhutesu nidra-rupena samsrita(?). (S)he's keeping everyone in sleeping, more dozes. Utthisthata jagrata prapta varan nibodhata. And therefore Veda says that "Don't sleep. Get up, rascal. Get up. This is the opportunity." But no. Yogamaya-samavrtah. Yogamaya is keeping him in sleeping condition. Nidralasya. So we should be very careful. Caitanya Mahaprabhu also: jiv jago jiv jago gauracandra bole. The Gauracandra's mission is to awaken the conditioned soul. Jiv jago jiv jago gauracandra... Kota nidra yao maya-pisacira kole. How long we shall sleep? We are thinking that "I am sleeping at the lap of my beloved mother." Don't do this. Get up. The Vedic vacana: utthisthata jagrata prapta varan nibodhata. We should be very careful that we have got this body, human form of body, and we should not sleep. Sleeping means ignorance. Maya andha-kara. Just like at night we sleep because it is darkness. But during daytime we do not sleep, generally. That is the way.

So we must come to the light and may not sleep and lose the chance of human form of body. Here the instruction is that Krsna, or Rsabhadeva... Rsabhadeva is bhagavata rsabha-devasya, rsabhasya. Imam jagatim abhimana, abhimana abhasena. Abhimana abhasena. He looks like ordinary human being, but you should be careful. No. He is not ordinary human being. Then... Therefore we must know. These are the knowledge given by... And if we understand it perfectly... Understanding means when we are uncontaminated, we can understand. So long we are contaminated -- daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14] -- then you cannot. But you can get out of the clutches of this maya. Then you can understand. How? Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14]. Just surrender. Surrender means to surrender... Mayy asakta manah partha yogam yunjan mad-asrayah. This is surrender. Mad-asrayah. Take shelter of Krsna. Krsna, we cannot take shelter directly, mad-asrayah. But you can take shelter of a person who has taken shelter of Krsna. If one is surcharged with electricity, if you touch him, then you will be also electrified. Evam parampara praptam imam rajarsayo [Bg. 4.2]. Krsna, five thousand years ago He spoke Bhagavad-gita. How we can hear Him? Yes, you can hear Him by parampara system. Krsna says repeatedly that "I am this, I am this," and Arjuna understands Him, "Yes, You are this." Sarvam etan rtam manye yad vadasi kesava. Then he understands. He is directly understanding. And you take the version of Arjuna. Arjuna says, param brahma param dhama [Bg. 10.12]. Why you, rascal, interpret in a different way, rascal? What right you have got? "My Krsna is like that. My Krsna..." What right you hve got? Krsna says like this; one who listen to Krsna about Krsna, he says like that. You rascal, why do you interpret in a different way? This is going on.

So be careful of these rascals. Mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva nasa [Cc. Madhya 6.169]. Then you'll never be able to understand Krsna. Yogamaya-samavrtah. We should take the instruction of the sastra that Krsna and Krsna's soul, there are... Ekam evadvitiyah. He is one, without any second. Bhayam dvitiyabhinivesi..., nisevatah syat isad apetasya. Isad apetasya. So the more we forget Krsna, then we are in the material stage. Material stage means bhayam, always fearful. "Why shall I accept Krsna as human being, as a person? Oh, it is... It is not. How He can be a person? How a person can produce such a vast sky?" He says, bhumir apo analo vayuh kham mano buddhir eva: [Bg. 7.4] "Yes, I have produced the sky." But these rascals will not believe how a person can do it. They'll comment in their own way. So avoid this.

Here Rsabhadeva says about the Personality of Godhead. Accept them; believe them; take it. You understand or not understand, take it for granted. Then you will be able to make advance in Krsna consciousness.

Thank you very much. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Prabhupada:

yo yogo bhagavad-bano
nirvanatmams tvayoditah
kidrsah kati cangani
yatas tattvavabodhanam
 [SB 3.25.29]

Tattva avabodhanam. Tattva means truth. So the idea is how to understand the Supreme Person, Supreme Being, in tattvatah, in truth.

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascin mam vetti tattvatah
 [Bg. 7.3]

This tattva word has been used in the Bhagavad-gita, that everyone has got some idea of God. Not everyone; but out of many many millions of person: manusyanam sahasresu. Not ordinary men. There are millions and millions of person who don't care, just like animal. They don't care to know what is God, what is our relationship with God, how to act in that relationship. The Vedic instruction, the whole Vedic instruction is for this purpose. Vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyah [Bg. 15.15]. That is the purpose of Veda.

So first of all we have to know what is our relationship with God. That you do not know. Neither you try for it. This child... Therefore Krsna says, Krsna says, not we say, that out of many many thousands and millions of persons, manusyanam sahasresu [Bg. 7.3], so kascid, somebody becomes interested what is the purpose of life. That is actually awakening of human life. Otherwise like cats and dogs: eating, sleeping, having sex intercourse, and after some time finished, that is the life of cats and dogs. That is not human life. Human life as it is stated in the Vedas, athato brahma jijnasa. This life is meant for inquiring about the Supreme Being, Brahman, Parabrahman. That is human life. The whole Vedic civilization is based on this basic principle that to understand the Absolute Truth.

So in this Kali-yuga nobody is interested even. We are spreading Krsna consciousness, very few people are interested to know about Krsna or the Supreme Being. So that is not human life. Human life means when we inquire about the Absolute Truth. That is human life. So there are so many societies, so many religious institutions. But nobody is interested to know Krsna, or the Supreme Being. Krsna means the Supreme Being, all-attractive. No educational system, no university. Therefore Krsna said, manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye [Bg. 7.3], that is siddhi of... Siddhi means perfection of life, to understand God. Because in the human life if one tries he can understand God, he can understand himself, he can understand what is his relationship with God, he can understand how to act in that relationship and thus make his life perfect. That is human life. So manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye. Siddhi. Siddhi means self-realization. And yatatam api siddhanam [Bg. 7.3]. And even though one is siddha, or self-realized, he also does not understand what is Krsna. Even one is siddha. That siddha has still to be progressed. Then he will come to jnanavan. Jnanavan means one who is siddha, one who has understood himself. That siddhi means to understand oneself that "I am not this body." That is siddhi.

Everyone is misguided, everyone is acting in this world under the bodily concept of life. And they are very very much unhappy on account of this. Because as soon as one understands that "I am not this body," he immediately becomes Brahma-bhutah prasannatma. Prasannatma means, what do you mean by prasannatma? Na socati na kanksati [Bg. 18.54]. No more material desire. That is brahma-bhutah. Everyone is trying for material sense gratification -- the animals, the beasts, the birds, and the human being. That is material world. He is simply socati and kanksati. When there is loss he is crying, and when there is no possession he is hankering. These are the two diseases of material existence.

So when one is brahma-bhuta [SB 4.30.20], he realized that "I am not this body, I am pure spirit soul," aham brahmasmi, then the next stage is nasocati na kanksati. That is the. But that is not all. That is not all. That is not steady. Brahma-bhutah prasannatma na socati na... [Bg. 18.54], samah sarvesu bhutesu. At that time, because he is not in the bodily platform of life, he does not see the body but he sees the soul. So as spirit soul we are one. Simply we are differently dressed in different body on account of our desire and karma. So one who has realized that "I am not this body," he does not make any difference of body.

vidya-vinaya-sampanne
brahmane gavi hastini
suni caiva sva-pake ca
panditah sama-darsinah
 [Bg. 5.18]

He does not make any difference that "Here is a learned brahmana and here is a dog." Because he knows the learned brahmana has got a different body and the dog has got a different body. Ultimately the dog is also a spirit soul and the brahmana is also a spirit soul. That is his vision. It does not mean that he's so fool he makes a brahmana equal to the dog. No. That is not. But he knows the fact what is the dog and what is the brahmana. That is Brahman realization. Samah sarvesu bhutesu. Then mad-bhaktim labhate param [Bg. 18.54]. Then the real bhakti begins.

That means after self-realization, when he understands that he is not this body... In the bodily conception of life I am thinking "I belong to this family," "I belong to this society," "I belong to the country," and so many. Aham mameti [SB 5.5.8]. Janasya moho 'yam, this illusion is going on. And brahma-bhutah means one who is above this illusion. He has no more such distinction that "I am this body. I am belong to this family, I belong to this country or community." No. "I belong to Krsna." Krsna says jiv..., mamaivamsa. Krsna says. And brahma-bhutah stage means I have realized that I am part and parcel of Krsna and my only business is to serve Krsna. That is Brahman realization. Therefore Krsna says yatatam api siddhanam kascin mam vetti tattvatah [Bg. 7.3]. Tattvatah means one has to understand in truth what is Krsna and what is my relationship with Krsna. Simply siddha is not perfection. Siddha means "I am not this body." That is all right, that is perfection. But you have to make further progress. Brahma-bhutah, you have become now self-realized, that's all right. Na socati na..., samah sarvesu. But you have to enter into the para-bhakti. Then your self-realization will stand. Otherwise again you will fall down. Aruhya krcchrena param padam tatah patanty adhah anadrta-yusmad-anghrayah [SB 10.2.32].

I have given this example that you have got a very nice sputnik, airplane, you can go many thousands and millions miles up. But if you don't get any shelter either in the moon planet or any other planet then you come back again. The same example. Similarly, you may become brahma-bhutah, Brahman realized, but if you simply remain in the impersonal or void... Brahma-bhutah means to make this material world null and void and you come to the another world, spiritual world. So if you cannot enter into the spiritual world, mad-bhaktim labhate param [Bg. 18.54], if you simply remain brahma-bhutah, then you will fall down. Because you are by nature seeking ananda, blissful life. So if you do not get varieties of life... Just like we want varieties in this material world. This material world is simply imitation of the spiritual world. So we are attached to the varieties; therefore we are seeking ananda. But because it is material and we are spiritual being, we cannot enjoy this ananda, material varieties fully. There are so many defects, inebrieties, and we are seeking that spiritual variety. So if you don't enter into the spiritual world with spiritual variety then you will again fall down. That is called bhakti-yoga.

Just like Krsna says yad gatva na nivartante tad dhama paramam mama [Bg. 15.6]. When you get spiritual varieties, that you can get when you enter into the spiritual world, either in the Vaikuntha world, planet or in the Goloka Vrndavana planet, there are varieties. The varieties are mentioned in the sastra.

cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vrksa-
laksavrtesu surabhir abhipalayantam
laksmi-sahasra-sata-sambhrama-sevyamanam
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
 [Bs. 5.29]

Venum kvanantam aravinda-dalayataksam [Bs. 5.30]. Don't think that Krsna figure is the imagination of some artist or painter. No, no. These are the description in the Vedas. Venum kvanantam, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda, is playing on His flute. Venum kvanantam aravinda-dalayataksam [Bs. 5.30]. And His eyes are like the petals of lotus flower. Venum kvanantam aravinda-dalayataksam barhavatamsam. There is a feather of peacock, asitambuda-sundarangam, His complexion is like black cloud but very, very beautiful. Venum kvanantam aravinda-dalayataksam barhavatamsam asitambuda-sundarangam, kandarpa-koti-kamaniya. He is so beautiful that more attractive than many, many hundreds and thousands of Cupid. Kandarpa-koti-kamaniya-visesa-sobham govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami [Bs. 5.30]. This is the Govinda's description. There are so many descriptions.

So this is spiritual varieties. Material varieties cannot give us full satisfaction. Therefore you want change. Change, another change, another change. Punah punas carvita-carvananam [SB 7.5.30]. Here in the material world we are simply chewing the chewed. Once chewed and thrown it away, again somebody is coming chewing. So spiritual variety is not like that. Spiritual varieties is anandambudhi-vardhanam. The more you are attached to spiritual variety, it is just like ocean. An ocean does not increase, but spiritual varieties are said they are increasing. Now just like here you have got the Arabian Sea. It is not increasing. It would have increased, then Bombay town would have been finished long ago. So it is not increasing. It has got a certain limit. You go to the beach you see no, no more than. But it is compared with anandambudhi, the ocean of bliss, increasing, vardhanam. Anandambudhi-vardhanam. The more you enter into the spiritual bliss, the more you become joyful. That is spiritual. Spiritual, just like these boys, these girls they are chanting Hare Krsna. Had it been hackneyed, how long they would have chanted? No. That is not possible. Unless it is spiritual, nobody can be satisfied simply by chanting Hare Krsna Hare Krsna. You take any other word, "Mr. John, Mr. John, Mr. John," how long you will chant? After chanting for half an hour you will be fed up. But this is anandambudhi-vardhanam. The more you chant the more you become spiritually advanced. This is called anandambudhi-vardhanam. Otherwise how one can be satisfied simply by chanting, chanting Hare Krsna? They are not mad, they are not foolish. They are human being. And how they have given up everything simply by chanting if it is not anandambudhi-vardhanam, if it is not increasing in spiritual blissfulness. Practical. They have forgotten everything, they are also young men. They don't go to cinema. Just one block after there is cinema, they will never go, giving up this chanting and go to the cinema. Don't you see practically?

So spiritual life, that is spiritual life, that if you take to spiritual life and take to the process then your anandambudhi-vardhanam, your spiritual life, will be blissful more and more. It is not decrease. Because we want ananda. Anandamayo 'bhyasat (Vedanta-sutra 1.1.12). That is the Vedanta-sutra. Living being or Parabrahman or Brahman, everyone is anandamaya. That ananda can..., you get perfectly when you take anandamaya with Krsna, in association with Krsna. You associate with Krsna as servant or as friend or as father, as mother, as conjugal lover. There are five rasas: santa, dasya, sakhya, vatsalya, madhurya. Here also in this material world we have got the same rasas. We are related with somebody as father, or somebody as son, somebody as lover, somebody as beloved, somebody as master, somebody as servant. This is relationship. This is the perverted reflection of the spiritual world. Therefore although we have got the same relationship for relishing... Today I am loving my son and tomorrow my son may be the greatest enemy. There is no eternity of such love. Or the son may die. There is no eternity. Today I am loving some man or woman; it may break tomorrow. That is the defect of the material world. But in the spiritual world the same relationship will never break. It will anandambudhi-vardhanam, simply increase, simply increase. That is called perfection. That is called per...

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascin mam vetti tattvatah
 [Bg. 7.3]

If we understand Krsna tattvatah, not superficial... Here the word is used yatas tattvavabodhanam. Tattvavabodhanam: "Kindly explain to me that bhakti-yoga which we can fully understand the truth, Absolute Truth." Tattvavabodhanam.

So how that tattva can be understood? That is explained by Krsna that janma karma ca divyam me yo janati tattvatah. So we have to understand Krsna, tattvatah, by truth. And how? We can understand that Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita, bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah [Bg. 18.55]. This is tattva word. So tattvavabodhanam. Devahuti is asking Kapiladeva that "Kindly describe that process of yoga by which we can understand in truth, tattvavabodhanam, not superficially." Tattvavabodhanam. And in another place the tattvam is described in three ways: vadanti tat tattva-vidas tattvam yaj jnanam advayam [SB 1.2.11]. They are not different. That is everything is tattva, tattva. There are three kinds of tattva: brahmeti paramatmeti bhagavan iti sabdyate. This very thing, tattva, is described in three features: impersonal Brahman, localized Paramatma, and at the end Bhagavan.

So understanding of Bhagavan means understand of Brahman and Paramatma. But understanding of Brahman or Paramatma is not understanding Bhagavan. Therefore the Brahmavadis, the Paramatmavadis, they are impersonalists. They cannot understand the Supreme Being Personality of Godhead, Krsna. They cannot understand. That is the defect. Therefore some yoga system, jnana-yoga system, or dhyana-yoga system, and there is bhakti-yoga system. That bhakti-yoga system is the perfect. And jnana-yoga system or dhyana-yoga system, that is partial understanding, Paramatma feature. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. In that way you can understand, you can come to the platform of understanding samah sarvesu bhutesu. But that is not perfection. Still you have to go. Samah sarvesu bhutesu mad-bhaktim labhate param [Bg. 18.54]. After realizing samah sarvesu bhutesu, this principle, then you will have to enter into the devotional service, para-bhakti. Para-bhakti means transcendental. Bhakti means para. Bhakti does not mean material. Material, it looks like material activities, but it is not material activities. Just like the example can be given just like a man, a boy is flying kite. He is, what is called, the reel? So sometimes he brings down the kite and sometimes he allows the kite to go. There are two kind of playing. So similarly, the one kind of activity means you are becoming free from the resultant action of activities, and one kind of activity is you are becoming entangled.

So that is also explained in the Bhagavad-gita, yajnarthe karmanah anyatra karma-bandhanah. If you work for Yajna, for Krsna, then you are becoming relieved from the resultant action of karma. But if you work for your sense gratification, then you are becoming entangled with the resultant action of your karma. Therefore sometimes this bhakti-yoga is misunderstood as karma. Mayavadis, they cannot understand. They think that bhakti-yoga is also karma. "These people are less intelligent, so they are in the... Because jnana-yoga means vikarma or akarma, akarma. There is no resultant action." That is the view of the jnanis, Mayavadi philosophers. But because they see that the bhaktas they are working also just like ordinary man, therefore it is maya, that is Mayavada. They think bhakti activities as maya. Therefore we call them Mayavada. But actually bhakti-yoga, if you act according to the shastric principles, if you act according to the order of your spiritual master in bhakti-yoga, that is not karma. That is bhakti-yoga, beyond this karma-yoga. But they cannot understand.

Just like Krsna described in the sastras: cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vrksa-laksavrtesu surabhir abhipalayantam [Bs. 5.29]. Surabhir abhipalayantam. Krsna is very much fond of tending cows, surabhi cows. The Mayavadi will see, "What is this Krsna?" Even Brahma was bewildered, "How is that this Krsna, this boy in Vrndavana is being worshiped? He's spoken like the Supreme Personality of Godhead. How is that He is taking care of the cows, this cowherd boy?" Indra was also bewildered. Muhyanti yat surayah. To understand Krsna, even Brahma, Indra, they become bewildered. Therefore,

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascin mam vetti tattvatah
 [Bg. 7.3]

We have to understand Krsna in truth. Otherwise we will be bewildered. And for that reason you have to hear from Krsna or His representative to understand Krsna. Otherwise you will also be bewildered.

So if we can understand Krsna, that these activities of Krsna, divyam..., janma karma ca me divyam [Bg. 4.9], divine, and they are not ordinary activities. If we can understand it, immediately we become liberated. Simply if we can understand the activities of this Krsna's dancing with the gopis, they are divyam, they are not ordinary. Just like here also a young man wants to dance with many young girls; it is not like that. And because people cannot understand Krsna, and if they hear about the dancing of Krsna with the gopis, they take it the concession, "Now let us dance with young girls." And they are going to hell. Therefore you have to learn from the proper person about Krsna's activities. If you learn Krsna from the professional uneducated person, nondevotee, then you will go to hell. Therefore immediately we should not try to understand Krsna's dealing with the gopis. It is very confidential. It is kept in the Tenth Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam. That means you have to understand Krsna as He is by reading first nine cantos of Srimad-Bhagavatam. Then you will be able to understand janma karma ca divyam. The Krsna's activities, they are not ordinary thing. They are divine. And if we actually understand, then immediately you become liberated. Janma karma ca divyam yo janati tattvatah.

Therefore here it is said, kidrsah kati cangani. How that bhakti-yoga is situated and how many processes or branches are there? Kidrsah kati ca angani yatas tattvavabodhanam. Then we can understand Krsna in tattva, in truth. That is required. That is bhakti-yoga. And that angani, angani means they are all the same. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam [SB 7.5.23]. There are nine angas, nine... Anga means different varieties. They are the same. Spiritually they are the same, spiritually absolute. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam. Either you hear or you chant or you memorize or you offer worship, arcanam vandanam dasyam, or you simply work under the direction of your spiritual master or Krsna. Just like Hanuman: he dasyam. He simply carried out Lord Ramacandra's order. He was supposed to be animal. He's not animal. But he was looking like a monkey animal. But having no education, no. He had everything. But superficially he..., he is not teaching Vedanta. He is simply carrying order of Lord Ramacandra, that's all. He appears to be very foolish. Not foolish, but superficially animal. He was simply carrying out, dasyam. Arjuna, simply he took Krsna as his most intimate friend, that's all. He was not a Vedantist; he was a fighter, he was a ksatriya. He had to deal with politics. No time to become Vedantist. But still he's the greatest devotee. Bhakto 'si priyo 'si me [Bg. 4.3]. Krsna says, "My dear Arjuna, you are My very dear friend and devotee." So people may say, "Oh, he is not a Vedantist, he is not even brahmana, he is not a sannyasi. How Krsna accepts him as bhakto 'si?" That is called bhakti. Bhakti is ahaituky apratihata. If you become a devotee there is no impediment. No material condition can check your progress of bhakti, if you are a bhakta.

sa vai pumsam paro dharmo
yato bhaktir adhoksaje
ahaituky apratihata
yayatma suprasidati
 [SB 1.2.6]

If you want real life, prasanna... Brahma-bhutah prasannatma [Bg. 18.54]. If you take to bhakti, automatically you become prasannatma. Yayatma suprasidati. What is that? Ahaituky apratihata bhakti. Without any motive. "I shall serve Krsna with a motive," that is also good in this sense, that he is pious, he has approached Krsna. He is not impious like the atheist, like the nonbeliever. But he is good, although he has approached... Just like Dhruva Maharaja. Dhruva Maharaja worshiped Krsna with a motive. But after being perfect in devotional service he becomes without motive. When he saw actually Krsna, he said, "No, no, no. I don't want anything from You." Svamin krtartho 'smi varam na yace [Cc. Madhya 22.42]. "I don't want any benediction." That is bhakti. Ahaituky apratihata. Not that we shall worship Krsna to serve some material purpose. That is also good, because he has come to Krsna. Someway or other he has come. Catur-vidha bhajante mam sukrtino 'rjuna. That is his piety. Anyone who comes to Krsna someway or other, he is very fortunate. He is not ordinary man. Ei rupe brahmanda bhramite kona bhagyavan jiva [Cc. Madhya 19.151]. Bhagyavan jiva means very fortunate person. He comes to Krsna consciousness. Not ordinary person.

yesam tv anta-gatam papam
jananam punya-karmanam
te dvandva-moha-nirmukta
bhajante mam drdha-vratah
 [Bg. 7.28]

Krsna-bhajana is not so easy. But if you voluntarily, if after hearing so many qualities of Krsna, transcendental qualities, if you somehow or other become attracted to Krsna consciousness, then your life is successful. Yena tena prakarena manah krsne nivesayet. Somehow or other you attach your mind to Krsna consciousness. Sarve vidhi-nisedhah syur etayor eva kinkarah.

Then Krsna says that "Anyone who is engaged in My devotional service with love and faith, buddhi-yogam dadami tam." This is buddhi-yoga. Buddhi-yoga means bhakti-yoga. Buddhi-yoga means, bhakti-yoga is not for the foolish person. Bhakti-yoga means buddhi-yoga, one who is highly intelligent. Or somehow or other he has become intelligent, that "I shall take to Krsna consciousness." Then his life is perfect immediately, and gradually he will realize Krsna, tattvatah. Bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah [Bg. 18.55]. You somehow or other take to Krsna consciousness, engage yourself in devotional service under the direction of sastra and the spiritual master, then you will understand Krsna and then your life is perfect.

Thank you very much. (end)

Very Intimately Connected

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.15.1
New York, November 29, 1973

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Pradyumna: "Translation. Suta Gosvami said: Arjuna, the celebrated friend of Lord Krsna, was grief stricken because of his strong feeling of separation from Krsna, over and above all Maharaja Yudhisthira's speculative inquiries."

Prabhupada: So evam krsna sakhah krsno. Arjuna's name is Krsna Sakha, and he is also called sometimes Krsna, because Arjuna's bodily feature was almost similar to Krsna's bodily feature. So, he was morose, being separated from Krsna, and his elder brother was suggesting whether he was morose for this reason or that reason or this reason. Actually, he was unhappy on account of being separated from Krsna. Similarly, not only Arjuna, all of us, we are also, as Krsna, Arjuna, he is also a living entity, we are also living entity. So we are also unhappy, because we are separated from Krsna. These modern philosophers or scientists, they may suggest that they may go on thinking otherwise that they can improve the world situation in their own way, but that is not possible. We are unhappy on account of being separated from Krsna. They do not know that. Just like a child, a child is crying, nobody can say why he is crying, but actually a child is generally in crying condition being separated from the mother.

So the, not only it is the question of Arjuna or Krsna, everyone of us. In the Upanisad it is said that Paramatma, Krsna, and the living entity they are sitting on the same tree, samani vrkse. One living entity is eating the fruit of the tree, and the other living entity is simply witnessing, anumanta. So Krsna, He's situated in everyone's heart, isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. Because without His sanction, the living entity cannot do anything. Sarvasya caham hrdi sannivisto [Bg. 15.15], Krsna says that "I am seated in everyone's heart." So, the living entity wants to do something out of his own whims, Krsna says, or Krsna gives good consultation that "This will not make you happy, don't do this." But he is persistent, he will do it. Then Krsna sanctions, Paramatma, "All right, you do it, at your risk." This is going on. Everyone of us (is) very intimately connected with Krsna, and Krsna is sitting in everyone's heart. Krsna is so kind, that He is simply waiting, "When this rascal will turn his face towards Me." He simply is, he is so kind. But we living entities, we are so rascal, we shall turn our face to everything except Krsna. This is our position.

We want to be happy, with so many ideas. Everyone is making his own idea, "Now this is the..." But the rascals, they do not know that, what is the actual process for getting happiness, that is Krsna. That they do not know. na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah [SB 7.5.31]. You, you can see in your country, they are trying so many things, so many skyscraper buildings, so many motor cars, so many big, big cities, but there is no happiness. Because they do not know what is missing. That missing point we are giving. Here is, "You take Krsna and you will be happy." This is our Krsna consciousness. Krsna and the living entity, they are very intimately connected. Like father and son, or friend and friend, or master and servant, like that. We are very much intimately connected. But because we have forgotten our intimate relationship with Krsna, and trying to become happy in this material world, therefore we have to undergo so much tribulations. This is the position. Krsna bhuliya jiva bhoga vancha kare.

We living entities, we are trying to become happy within this material world, "Why you are in the material world, why not in the spiritual world?" The spiritual world, nobody can become the enjoyer, bhokta. That is only Supreme, bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva... [Bg. 5.29]. There is no mistake. There are also living entities, but they know perfectly well that real enjoyer, proprietor, is Krsna. That is spiritual kingdom. Similarly, even in this material world, if we understand perfectly well that we are not enjoyer, Krsna is enjoyer, then that is spiritual world. This Krsna consciousness movement is trying to convince everyone that we, we are not enjoyer, enjoyer is Krsna. Just like, this whole body, the enjoyer is the stomach, and the hands and legs and eyes and ears and brains and everything, these should be engaged to find out the enjoyable things and put it in the stomach. This is natural. Similarly, we are part and parcel of God, or Krsna, we are not enjoyer.

In every religion, it is accepted. Just like in Christian religion also it is said: "Oh God, give us our daily bread." Bread, we cannot manufacture. It must come from God. That is Vedic version also nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam eko bahunam yo vidadhati kaman. God, or Krsna, He gives everything, necessities of life, as you like, but if you accept your enjoyable things as you like, then you'll become entangled. But if you accept things to be enjoyed by you, tena tyaktena bhunjitha, as Krsna offers you, then you'll become happy. If you make, just like a diseased patient, if he wants to enjoy life in his own whimsical way, he'll continue his disease. But if he accepts the modes of life according to the directions of the physician, then he becomes free from So there are two methods, pravrtti and nivrtti. Pravrtti means "I have got inclination to eat this or to enjoy this. Why not? I shall do it. I have got my freedom." "But you have no freedom sir, you are simply..." That is maya. You have no freedom. We get experience, suppose there is very nice palatable food. If I think, let me eat as much as possible, then next day I'll have to starve. Immediately dysentery or indigestion.

So you cannot violate the laws of Krsna, or laws of nature, that is not possible. You are not at all independent. Because these rascals, they'll not understand this. They are always thinking, we are independent. That is the cause of all unhappiness. Nobody is independent. How you can be independent? Nobody is independent, neither you can be independent, neither nobody is independent. That factual, who is independent? Here you are sitting, so many boys and girls, who can say "I am independent of everything"? No, nobody can say. So this is our mistake, and by misusing our independence we are suffering in this material world in so many ways. That has to be reformed. That has to be checked. That is Krsna consciousness movement. Caitanya Mahaprabhu has preached, jivera svarupa haya nitya krsna dasa [Cc. Madhya 20.108-109]. We living entities, we are eternally servant of Krsna. That is our position. But if we deny this position, "Now why shall I become servant of Krsna? I am independent," then suffering begins, immediate. Krsna bhuliya jiva bhoga vancha kare, as soon as you desire to enjoy independently, immediately -- that means immediately he is captured by maya.

krsna bhuliya jiva bhoga vancha kare
pasate maya tare japatiya dhare

It is very easy to understand. Just like if you don't care for the government laws, if you want to live independently, that means immediately you are in the clutches of the police force. You haven't got to create, it is already there. So our position is always dependent on God. We should understand this. This is Krsna consciousness. Therefore, Bhaktivinoda Thakura has a song,

manaso deho geho, yo kichu mora,
arpilun tuya pade nanda-kisora

This mistake is going on, that I am independent, king, and my soldiers or my society, community, family or -- so many we have manufactured -- but

dehapatya-kalatradisv
atma-sainyesv asatsv api
tesam nidhanam pramattah
pasyann api na pasyati

Just like a man fights, just like Hitler declared war, or so many wars are declared. This man is declaring, everyone is thinking, "I am independent." So, and we are thinking that we have got so many soldiers, so many atomic bombs, and so many aeroplanes, we shall come out victorious. Similarly, each and everyone of us, we are thinking, "I am independent, and my wife, my children, my society, they are my soldiers. If I am in danger, they will help me." This is going on. This is called maya. Pramattah tesam nidhanam pasyann api na pasyati, because we have become mad after this so-called independence, independence of God, we are thinking these things will help us, will protect us, but that is maya. Tesam nidhanam, everyone will be destroyed. Nobody will be able to give us protection. If real protection is wanted, he will have to take protection of Krsna. That is the instruction of Bhagavad-gita, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. You rascal, you are thinking that so many things will give you protection. That will not be possible. You will be finished, and your so-called protector, and friends, and soldiers, they will be finished. You don't depend on them. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam... [Bg. 18.66], you just surrender unto Me, I'll give you protection, aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah. This is real protection.

Everyone is falsely thinking independent, but he is dependent. But he is depending on false platform. That is the mistake of this material civilization. They are thinking of protection from a (sic:) tiltering platform, material world. So we have to take shelter of Krsna. Krsna is very friendly to all of us. Therefore he comes down from Vaikuntha to inform this, that is Bhagavad-gita. And that is elaborately explained in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. This is the only thing. So the crisis, people are faced with so many crises, problems. That I told in the airport. The reporter asked me "What is the solution of this crisis?" The solution is Krsna consciousness, it is already there, but you rascal, you will not take it. Solution is already there. If the Arabians think that this oil is Krsna's property and the others, purchasers, they also think, Krsna's property, then they must agree also. America also must agree that this land of America is also Krsna's property. If you think that the Arabian oil is Krsna's property, God's property, we shall take it, by force. Then why the Arabians should not be allowed to come from the desert and live in America? But they (are) foolish, they will not come, they have got United Nations. But United Nations means simply committing mistake, mistake, mistake, mistake. That's all. That is their business. Why don't you united? Yes, this Arabian oil is Krsna's property. Similarly the Australian land, or the African land, or this American land, so vast tract of land But "No, you can not come here, yow yow." They say, the immigration department. You see. Yow yow department.

So this nonsense, these rascals, all these politicians, they're spoiling the situation, but they are so big rascal, they'll not accept the solution. Take Krsna consciousness, and everything will be solved. That's a fact. Mudha, but they're so rascal, duskrtina, and full of sinful activities, na mam duskrtina mudhah prapadyante naradhamah, and lowest of the mankind. So always remember that our preaching work is dealing with these kind of men. Duskrtina means full of sinful activities. Mudha, rascals, naradhamah, lowest of the mankind and mayayapahrta-jnana, and they're thinking very much advanced in education, but fool number one maya has taken their away, real knowledge, mayayapahrta-jnana. Asuri bhavam asritah. Why all these things? Because they are Godless, only fault is Godless. Asuri bhavam asritah. Because they have taken the position (that) there is no God. These big, big scientists, they are trying to prove there is no God, "This creation is due from matter from chemical, the water has come from chemical combination, hydrogen, oxygen. These are the..." All foolish theories, and they are getting Nobel prize. They are getting Nobel prize. This is the position.

Therefore, from this verse, you should know evam krsna-sakhah krsno bhratra rajna vikalpitah, nana-sanka... These rascals, our Say our elder brother, advance, they're suggesting, "This the cause of," "this is the cause of," "this is the cause of," "this is the cause of." But the only cause is Krsna, forgetfulness of Krsna, that they do not know. The only cause.

krsna bhuliya jiva bhoga vancha kare,
pasate maya tare japatiya (dhare)

This is the cause. So try to preach this cult. But not that everyone will accept, but even a few percent, one percent of the whole population accept. Just like in the sky, there is one moon only and there are millions of stars. They're useless. What is the value of the millions of stars? But one moon, oh, dissipate the whole darkness of night. Similarly, at least those who have taken to Krsna consciousness, you become, each of you become a moon and enlighten the world. These so-called glow-worms, they'll not be able to do anything. That's a fact. Don't remain a glow-worm. Just become a sun and moon. Then you will..., people will be happy, you will be happy.

Thank you very much. (end)

"Transfer Your Love To Krsna"

72/11/29 Hyderabad, Bhagavad-gita 2.25

Prabhupada:

avyakto 'yam acintyo 'yam
avikaryo 'yam ucyate
tasmad evam viditvainam
nanusocitum arhasi
[Bg. 2.25]

So in so many different ways, Krsna is convincing how the spirit soul is immortal. In different ways. Avyakto 'yam. It is not manifest to the blunt material eyes. We cannot see, Because as we have explained several times, the magnitude of the soul is one ten-thousandth part of the tip of the hair, very small. I think, smaller than the atom. That spirit soul is everywhere. Sarva-ga. Sarva-gata. Everywhere. Andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham [Bs. 5.35]. And wherever the spirit soul is there within this material world, he has got a body and there is heart, and within that heart, Krsna is also there. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. Both of them, living there. Therefore anor aniyan mahato mahiyan. Krsna can become greater than the greatest and the smaller than the smallest. This is God.

When Krsna was playing as a child, He ate earth and the playmates complained to mother Yasoda: "Mother, your son Krsna is eating earth." Mother Yasoda called for explanation: "Krsna, why You are eating earth? I have given You sandesa." Krsna said, "No, mother, I have not eaten." "No, Your friends are complaining." "No, they have become My enemies this morning. We had some quarrel. Therefore they have combined together to make Me chastised by you." So in this way... Then mother Yasoda wanted to solve this problem: "All right, show Your mouth, open Your mouth. I want to see." And when Krsna opened the mouth, the mother saw innumerable universes are within the mouth. This is Krsna. Anor aniyan mahato mahiyan. Krsna enters within the universe, but at the same time, millions of universes are within His mouth. This is the explanation of "the greater than the greatest and the smaller than the smallest." Of course, mother Yasoda, although she saw, she could not believe it because mother Yasoda never thought of that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. She always thought that "He is my teeny child." That's all. "I have to take care of Him." This is called paternal feelings. Vatsalya-rasa.

Krsna is served by the devotees in so many rasas, transcendental mellow, or humor. Somebody is serving as servant. Somebody is serving as friend. Somebody is serving as father and mother. Somebody is serving as conjugal lover. These are five primary mellows in which a devotee is connected with Krsna. And there are other, seven rasas also. They are not primary; secondary. Somebody is serving Krsna as enemy. Just like the asuras. They also serve Krsna -- as enemy. Somebody is serving, giving pleasure to Krsna, by fighting with Him. So there are so many, twelve rasas. Akhila-rasamrta-sindhu. All the rasas that we have got experience within this world, they are coming from Krsna. Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. The Vedanta-sutra says, "Everything, whatever we see within our experience, we cannot experience anything if it is not in Krsna." That is Krsna. He was stealing, which we consider not very good business. That stealing is also in Krsna. He's, He's famous as Makhana-cora, the stealer of butter. So this is Krsna. So everything is there. Whatever our dealings in this material world we find, that is only perverted reflection of our dealing with Krsna in the spiritual world. But those who are unaware of the spiritual world, impersonalists, they have no information that Krsna is always busy. Jaya radha-madhava kunja-bihari. He's always busy. He's person. But He is simply dear to the gopijana. Gopijana-vallabha. He wants to please the gopijanas. The gopis, the cowherd boys and the gopis, constant companion of Krsna.

So this is sanatana. Krsna is sanatana, and His dealing with His devotees, that is also sanatana. And these are possible not here, but in the sanatana-dhama. We cannot have sanatana dealings with Krsna within this material world. Therefore Krsna comes to canvass the conditioned souls that "For eternal happiness, for eternal dealings, you come to Me in My eternal place." Yad gatva na nivartante tad dhama paramam mama [Bg. 15.6]. Why not in this material world? No. The material world, the nature is it is not permanent. It is temporary. Bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19]. Janmady asya [SB 1.1.1]. Janmadi. Everything here in this material world has a date of birth, and anything which has a date of birth must be a date of death also. That is the nature of this material world. So here we can practice what is sanatana-dharma, but actually sanatana-dharma is executed in the spiritual world. So just like one is trained up to become apprentice in some business and when he's trained up, then he's given the post. So we get this information from the gosvamis, sanatana-gosvamis, that those who are devotees, those who are perfected in the training of devotional service, they are first of all given birth in the universe where Krsna is present. Krsna is always present. Just like the sun is present always in the sky, but we can see the sun in some opportune moment. But sun is always there. When the sun is set, it is set in my vision, but sun is there. When it is night, I cannot see the sun, but the sun is there. Similarly, Krsna is always there. We have to make our eyes to see Him. That's all. And that, how that eyes are made?

premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena
santah sadaiva hrdayesu vilokayanti
yam syamasundaram acintya-guna-svarupam
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
[Bs. 5.38]

Only the devotees who have loving affection for Krsna, who has developed loving propensity... The loving propensity's there already. But we have transferred, the loving propensity to Krsna, we have transferred the loving propensity to the maya.

So whole Krsna consciousness process is again transferring the loving propensity from maya to Krsna. This is the simple method. We have got love for Krsna, but being illusioned, being falsely positioned, we are trying to love something which is not Krsna. maya, Krsna's maya, illusion. Mama maya. Krsna says, "Maya is also Mine." Just like the cloud. What is this cloud? This is also made by the sun. Everyone, you know. The cloud means the sun evaporates water from the ocean, and it becomes cloud, and the business of the cloud is to cover our eyes to see the sun. Actually, the cloud has no existence, separate existence, and as soon as the sun is bright, the cloud disappears. This is bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19]. It comes into existence and again it disappears. This is maya. But the sky remains there; the sun remains there. Similarly, maya, illusion, is sometimes is generated. This is the creation of the material world, mahat-tattva-maya. So this is not permanent. It comes and goes. Similarly, maya is simply covering our eyes. Just the... Just like this cloud, it is not possible for the cloud to cover the sun. Sun is ninety-three millions, or at least, fourteen, fourteen hundred thousand times bigger than this earth. So how a cloud, spreading over, say, a few miles, ten miles, it can cover the sun? No. The cloud cannot cover the sun, but the cloud can cover my eyesight. This is the position. Similarly maya cannot touch Krsna. The Mayavadi philosophy is that maya also covers Krsna. When Krsna comes here, He comes covered by this maya. No. This is not. Maya cannot touch. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam... When Vyasadeva realized Krsna, before writing Srimad-Bhagavatam...

bhakti-yogena manasi
samyak pranihite 'male
apasyat purusam purnam
mayam ca tad-apasrayam
[SB 1.7.4]

So Vyasadeva, by his meditation, saw the Supreme Person and maya also. Maya is on the backside. Maya cannot come in the front side. So Krsna is never covered by maya. It is our eyes which covered by maya. So we, the fragments of Krsna, mamaivamsah, we are covered by maya, not Krsna. The theory that Krsna becomes covered, that is nonsense. How Krsna can be covered? Krsna cannot be covered. He is the controller of the maya. And we are controlled by the maya. That is the difference. Krsna, mayadhisa, and we are mayadhina. Adhina. We can become free. Exactly the same example that when our eyes are covered by the cloud, we cannot see the sun, although the sun is there. So if some way or other... We have got very good experience nowadays by flying in the airship. As soon as the airship goes above the cloud, you have got immense sunlight. Immense sunlight. And practically, the jet planes, they go seven miles above the surface and there is no cloud. The cloud is down. Similarly, you can go also above maya. You can transcend maya and see Krsna always. That is possible. How? Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14]. You simply surrender to Krsna and Krsna will arrange that you are no more under maya. Simple process. You just become, as Krsna demands, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. This is sanatana-dharma. Because we are, after all, servant of Krsna, but artificially we are trying to become master of this material..., of this world. We are therefore sent here. Just like those who are revolutionary, do not care for the state laws, they are sometimes killed or sometimes put into the prison house. That means those who are not voluntarily surrendering to Krsna, they are put into the prison house. They are forced to surrender. Forced to surrender. They'll be forced. Just like you cannot become... You are not free, either outside the prison house or inside the prison house. But when you think that you have become free...

Vimukta-maninah. Vimukta-maninah, falsely thinking that "I have now become liberated." Avisuddha-buddhayah [SB 10.2.32]. But the intelligence is not very clear. This is last snare of maya. When one thinks that "I am God. I have become God," that is the last snare of maya. That is also maya. How you can become God? What capacity you have got? God has created so many things. What you have created? God has shown so many things. What you have done? But still, falsely they are thinking, "I am God." This is maya, last snare of maya. Because the real disease as we have already explained, is to lord it over the material nature. Everyone is trying: "I am the lord of all I survey. I want to become lord of this universe. I want to become minister. I want to become president. I want to become business magnitude." And everything fails. Then he wants to become God. That is also maya. That is not possible.

So this is going on. So real our relationship with God, Krsna, is to serve Him. Jivera svarupa haya nitya-krsna-dasa [Cc. Madhya 20.108-109]. Anadi bahirmukha jiva krsna bhuli gela, ataeva krsna veda purana kaila [Cc. Madhya 20.117]. We have forgotten real position, sanatana-dharma. We have forgotten. Sanatana-dharma means a living entity is meant for serving the whole. Living entity's a part, part of the whole. So the living entity's business is to serve the whole. Just like this finger. This finger is the part of my body. Its business is to carry out my order, to serve the whole. I want the finger to come here. Immediately... Similarly, our business is to serve Krsna, but when we want to become lord, independent of Krsna, that is called maya. Krsna-bahirmukha hana bhoga vancha kare, nikata-stha maya tare japatiya dhare. This is a statement in the Prema-vivarta. As soon as we desire to imitate Krsna, that is maya. Maya is nothing. We create that situation of maya. What is that? "I want to become Krsna. I want to become God. I want to become the Lord." This is maya. This is not possible. So Krsna is sanatana. We are also sanatana. But when we forget to serve Krsna, that is our asanatana. And when we are engaged again in the service of Krsna, that is sanatana-dharma. So sanatana-dharma means eternally serving Krsna. Another example, dharma... What is dharma? Dhr-dhatu. Characteristic. You cannot change it. You cannot change it. Just like sugar. Sugar characteristic means sweetness. And chili characteristic means pungent. So everything has got characteristic. Everything. That is called dharma. If sugar has become pungent and chili has become sweet... You purchase chili. If it is not very pungent, you throw it... "Oh, it is not good." Because the dharma of the chili is lacking there. Similarly, if you take sugar and if you find it salty, then you... "Oh, what is this?" So everything has got some characteristic. So we are living entities. We have got our characteristics. That is sanatana. I am sanatana, eternal, and my characteristic is to serve God. If I don't serve God, then the characteristic will remain there. Then I'll have to serve maya, in the illusion that I have become master. Actually, he's serving, but... Just like one man has got motorcar. So motorcar, to maintain a motorcar, to purchase a motorcar, it requires lots of money. So to get that money, he has to work very hard. And when he gets that money, he purchases a car, and then he has to maintain it by oiling, by supplying so many things. But he's thinking that "Now I have got a motorcar. Very nice." What is that? You are serving your motorcar. That's all

So this is the position. One is actually serving, not master. But he's thinking that he's master. This is maya. So when we give up this false prestigious position that I am master, then you are liberated. Hitva anyatha rupam. Mukti, the definition of mukti is hitva anyatha rupam svarupena avasthitih. Anyatha rupam. Now we are struggling hard within this material world, under the influence of maya, changing different types of body. Sometimes I am going to the heavenly planets. Sometimes I am going to the hellish planets. Sometimes I am rich man. Sometimes I am poor man. Sometimes brahmana, sometimes sudra. Sometimes tiger, sometimes tree. In this way, sarva-gata. Everywhere within this universe, the living entities are struggling for existence. Manah sasthani indriyani prakrti-sthani karsati. Mamaivamso jiva-bhuta. Krsna says, "All these living entities, they are My part and parcel, but foolishly, being carried by the mental concoction, prakrti-sthani, within this material world, karsati, struggling to become master." This is the disease. Prakrti-sthani karsati.

prakrteh kriyamanani
gunaih karmani sarvasah
ahankara-vimudhatma
kartaham iti manyate
[Bg. 3.27]

These rascals, they are pulled by the ear by prakrti. Prakrteh kriyamanani. "You do this" -- I have to do this. One who has associated with the tamo-guna of prakrti, prakrti has given a body just like hog, and the prakrti is obliging, "You come here. Eat the stool." And he's eating. "Oh, so nice." This is maya. Stool is very nice thing? But prakrti has given this hog a certain type of body and he is relishing: "Oh, stool is so nice." This is going on. Similarly, human form of body also. They're eating so many nonsense things in the restaurant, in the hotel, and they're relishing: "Oh, it is so nice." This is maya. This is going on. So our business is to serve, but because we have taken this attitude, that "I don't like to serve Krsna" or, "I am Krsna," then we are under the clutches of maya. Immediately. And under the illusion of maya... Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani... Karanam guna-sangah asya sad-asad-janma-yonisu. Because we are associating with the different modes of material nature, therefore we have to take birth, sad-asad-janma-yonisu. One is becoming hog, one is becoming dog, one is becoming human being, one is becoming demigod, one is becoming tree, one is becoming plant. So many... Eight million, four hundred thousands of species and form of life. Krsna says, sarva-yonisu kaunteya [Bg. 14.4]. Krsna says, "All these forms, whatever they may be, I am the bija-pradah pita. I am the father." So if Krsna is the original father of every living entity, how one has become brahmana, one has become sudra, one has become tree, one has become tiger, one has become hog, one has become Indra, one has become Brahma? How is that?

Now, karanam guna-sango 'sya sad-asad-janma-yonisu [Bg. 13.22]. So we are getting our birth in different types of body. The reason is I am associating with different types of the modes of nature. My mind is carrying me. It is not death. It is foolish to say that "This man is now dead. Everything is finished." That is rascaldom. Not finished. It is going on. Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. The foolish rascals, they say, "Now this man is dead, finished." Big, big professors, they are saying, "Swamiji, after death everything is finished." And he's professor. Just see. Rascal fools they are becoming leaders, professors, politicians, How the people will be happy? They are put into the ignorance of life. Always put. Na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah [SB 7.5.31]. They have been enamored by the external feature of Krsna's energy. This is also Krsna's energies, this material world. But we are attracted by this material energy. We should be attracted by the spiritual energy. That is perfection of life. Both energies are Krsna's. Apara, para. This is explained in Bhagavad-gita. So we are now attracted by the apara energy. Bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh [. 7.4], these material elements. We want. Because we are attracted by the material energy, therefore, when we construct a very nice stone house, oh, we think, "Now, yes, my life is successful. I have got a very nice house, made of stone." Are you stone? No. Still, my attraction is for the stone. Therefore Krsna gives me facility. "All right, you take the stone and try to... But you'll never be happy. Happy you'll be when you surrender to Me." Just like a child is given by the father all facilities to play, but at the same time, the father says, "My dear child, don't play like this. It is not good." But because the child persists, father sometimes says, "All right, you play like that. Similarly, Krsna does not want that we should come in this material world and be attracted by the earth, water, air, fire, and become great scientist and make combination of these five elements. Tejo-vari-mrdam vinimaya. What is this world? This world is a mixture of fire, earth, water, air. That's all. What is this? Tejo-vari-mrdam vinimayah tri-sargo 'mrsa. It is a false thing. Actually it is a combination of these five elements. And we are accepting... This body's also like that. Body's also combination of five elements. And we are attracted to this. "Oh, I have got so, such a, such a nice, beautiful body, strong body, American body," "Indian body," "Brahmana body," "This body," "That body." All maya. You'll never be happy by this bodily concept of life. Because you are...

Therefore Krsna indirectly saying that: acchedyo 'yam adahyo 'yam. The body is burned into ashes. Then how we are body? The body, when the man is dead, the body is put into the fire. So it is dahya, it becomes burned. Then how we are body? One man is claiming, "Oh, I am born brahmana. I have got this body from my birth." So that's all right. Then when your son will burn this body, then he'll be liable to brahma-hatya-papa. So this is going on, bodily concept... Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke [SB 10.84.13]. This body, made of three, I mean to say, biles, mucus, and air... So the, a bag of bones and flesh and blood, if one is thinking that "I am this, I am this body," then he is go-khara, cow or ass. So anyone who is on the bodily concept of life, he is animal, go-khara. Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. So how you can receive knowledge from a person who is animal? You cannot get any knowledge from the cows or the asses. So anyone who is under the bodily concept of life, he's no better than animal. So actually, if we say frankly, everyone is in the bodily concept of life. Therefore the modern civilization is animal civilization. It is not human civilization. Human civilization will begin when one will understand that "I am not this body. I am spirit soul." Aham brahmasmi. That is the beginning of human civilization. And so long one is under the bodily concept of life, it is the civilization of cats and dogs. That's all.

Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. [break]

Indian: (Hindi) [break]

Prabhupada: (answering question:) Then gradually we can understand. Ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. If you associate with devotees, hear them, then gradually everything will be cleared, and you'll understand your position. Then you understand: "Oh, I am not this body." Aham brahmasmi. That is the beginning of knowledge. Otherwise, so long you are under the bodily concept of life, you are in the animal platform. That is the difference. [break] But bhakti's such a nice thing that krsnakarsini. Bhakti attract Krsna. Krsna attracts everything, but bhakti attracts Krsna. Therefore we have to adopt the bhakti means. Bhaktya mam abhijanati, yavan yas casmi tattvatah. (Hindi)

bhaktya mam abhijanati
yavan yas casmi tattvatah
tato mam tattvato jnatva
visate tad-anantaram
[Bg. 18.55]

If you want to know Krsna in truth, then you have to take this devotional line. Then gradually Krsna will be attracted by your devotion, and then you will know Krsna and you'll be allowed to enter into Krsna's place. Otherwise, sarva-gatah, sthanur acalo 'yam. Although we are eternal, we have to wander within so many forms of life within this brahmanda and waste our time. That's all.

Indian: (Hindi) [break]

Prabhupada: Yes. (Hindi) Tilaka mantra hai, bhagavan kahe, Vamanadeva, Kesava, Govinda. So a devotee is protected from all sides by Krsna. So you remain safe. Krsna says, kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati [Bg. 9.31]. So bhakta hai (Hindi) So you are protected. That's it.

Indian: Yes, but even we put that tilaka on Lord also.

Prabhupada: Hmmm?

Indian: The same is there, of Lord, on the face of Lord, on...

Prabhupada: It is a temple of the Lord. Visnu-mandira. You cannot put Krsna or Visnu just like statues. We have got a fashion now, imitated from the Western. We make the statue of a big man the place of passing stool by the crows. We do not make like that. We give temple. When we worship somebody, we give him temple. Not for passing stool by the crows.

Indian: Why Brahman temples are not existing, and is there any Sanskrit reason or is...?

Prabhupada: What is that?

Indian: Brahman temple is not existing.

Prabhupada: Brahman is impersonal. Brahman is everywhere. Sarvam khalv idam brahma. Then Paramatma. Then Bhagavan.
Bhagavan is the last word of Absolute Truth. So Brahman is impersonal. Just like the sky is impersonal. [break]

Indian: Maharaja, it is indicated in Ramayana that God is coming to this world as kali-avatara. It is correct? What is the indication of His coming?

Prabhupada: His indication He's coming is that people are becoming degraded, forgetting God. That is their degradation. So at the end of this Kali-yuga they will be so much degraded that it will be impossible for them to understand God. At the present moment, although it is Kali-yuga, there are some persons who are trying to understand God. At least, there is attempt. But, at the end of Kali-yuga, say, about 400,000's of years, then people... Because they're becoming animals, more and more. The more we become animals, we cannot understand God. So our modern civilization is to make the people animal. That is advancement of civilization. Ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithunam ca samanyam etat pasubhih naranam. The modern civilization is how we can eat very nicely, how we can sleep nicely, how we can have sexual intercourse nicely, how we can defend nicely. Only these four principles are being taught. They have no idea what is soul, what is God, what is the relationship with the soul. So this is, this type of civilization is increasing. So just imagine how much it will be increased after four hundred thousands of years. The Kali-yuga has begun only five thousand years. Within this five thousand years, we have so much degraded, illusioned by the maya as advancement of civilization. This is maya. So the more days go, we shall be more illusioned. So there will be no capacity to understand about God. At that time, God will come to destroy all this population by cutting their throat. That is kalki-avatara. (end)

"Staying Undisturbed In Distress"

"Staying Undisturbed In Distress"

68/11/29 Los Angeles, Bhagavad-gita 2.13-17

Madhudvisa: Thirteen. "As the embodied soul continually passes in this body from boyhood to youth and then to old age, similarly the soul also passes into another body at death. The self-realized soul is not bewildered by such a change." Purport: "Since every living entity is an individual soul, each is changing his body at every moment, manifesting sometimes as a child, sometimes as a youth, and sometimes as an old man, although the same spirit soul is there and does not undergo any change. The individual soul finally changes the body itself in transmigrating from one to another. And since it is sure to have another body in the next birth, either material or spiritual, there was no cause for lamentation by Arjuna on account of death, either over Bhisma or over Drona, for whom he was so concerned."

Prabhupada: Now, this simple fact, as it is explained in the Bhagavad-gita, that dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara [Bg. 2.13], the change of body is taking place every moment. Every moment. Just like this child, the child, if there is some measuring instrument, if you measure this child today, tomorrow you'll find the child has grown or changed the body. That is a medical science also. The body is changing. The body is changing, but the soul is there. Just like I had my childhood body, boyhood body, and now I am in a different body, but I remember all the activities of my childhood. Therefore I am permanent. And body is changing. This simple truth, what is the difficulty for the people to understand this simple truth? The body is changing, but I am not changing. I am eternal. Therefore I am not this body. I am not changing. This simple truth, the first instruction of Bhagavad-gita. Krsna has begun instructing Arjuna... After Arjuna has accepted his discipleship, the first instruction is this, that "You are lamenting on the body of your grandfather and teacher regarding fighting, but your grandfather, or the soul...," which is already explained that, "You are soul, I am the supreme soul, or all these kings and soldiers who has assembled, they are also souls. They existed in the past. Now they have changed their body. Again they will change their body, but they will exist." This is the instruction. The body is changing, and the vivid example? That in this life you are changing body. So what is the difficulty of understanding this simple truth that the soul is different from the body? And so far eternity of the soul, that is also, there is proof. Because in childhood I was present, in boyhood I was present, in youthhood I was present, and in this old age I am still present. (baby fussing) So naturally it is concluded that when I change this body, I exist. When I change this body... This body will be changed. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. As the parents of this child... Now she is, say, one-feet long only. When this child will grow five feet long, the father and mother, will they cry, "Oh, my child! Where is my child, that one-feet long?" He knows. The parents know that my child is there, but changed the body. This is a fact. Similarly, "You are lamenting on the body of your grandfather and teacher, even they change their body, what is the cause of lamentation? They will exist." This is the beginning of instruction of Bhagavad-gita or spiritual instruction. Unless one understands this simple fact, that the soul is different from this body, the soul is eternal, the body is temporary, changing... Because without understanding this, there is no spiritual education. A false education. If one identifies with this body, there is no understanding of spiritual knowledge.

So the yogis, they are trying to come to this point by meditation, "Whether I am this body or not." Meditation means that. First meditation, concentration of the mind, the different kinds of sitting posture, that helps me to concentrate my mind. And if I concentrate my mind, meditation, so am I this body? Then if I am not this body, where I am in this body? Then if he analyzes, he'll find himself within this heart. Within this heart the soul is also there, and the Supersoul is also there. Krsna is also there. So the perfectional stage of yoga is to see the Supersoul and understand oneself that "I am individual soul." So that perfectional stages we are immediately offering, that you try to see Krsna always, Krsna consciousness. The yogis are trying to reach a platform after so much exercise of the body. We are giving that thing immediately, that "Be Krsna conscious." You are eternal part and parcel of Krsna, and Krsna is the Supersoul. Why should you take so much botheration to find Him within? He's without also. He's all-powerful. He can accept your offerings, and you can take prasadam. This is practical yoga. So we are not beginning from the gross stage. The Bhagavad-gita, although it is ABCD of spiritual instruction, it begins from that stage, which stage the jnanis, the philosophers and the yogis, they are trying to reach. But we have no time. In this age by yoga practice, to come to this stage, that "I am not this body"... Ask any student who are practicing yoga, so-called meditation, they are inclined to this body. They are trying to exercise this body and they think that this is the final. No. Simple truth, very simple truth. Krsna, as the supreme authority, presenting very simply, that dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara [Bg. 2.13]. As in this body there are different changes, similarly the ultimate change is called death. But the spirit soul, as he's existing within this body in spite of all changes, similarly the spirit soul will continue to exist even after the final change of this body. This simple truth. Try to understand this. This is the basic principle of further progress. If one does not understand this point of view, there is no progress. This is ABCD, that "I am not this body." Read on.

Madhudvisa: "Rather he should rejoice at their changing bodies from old to new ones."

Prabhupada: Now here is another argument, that "Why you are going to lament on the body of your grandfather? He's grand old man. If he does not die, if you do not kill him, how long he will live? So you kill him or not kill him, he will die. And you should be rather joyful because your grandfather is going to have again..." This is only for argument. "...again have a new body." The... When Caitanya Mahaprabhu met Chand Kazi... I think I have explained this story many times. Chand Kazi was Mohammedan. So you know the story that Caitanya Mahaprabhu started civil disobedience, disregarded the section, I mean to say, imposed by the magistrate Chand Kazi that "You cannot hold the sankirtana. The people are disturbed." Just like you are being threatened by the police. So this is not new thing. This thing is going on from the very beginning, even Caitanya Mahaprabhu's time. But Caitanya Mahaprabhu disregarded the notice. "Don't care for this Kazi. Go on." And when people... He was very popular, but we are not popular. Caitanya Mahaprabhu (laughs) was Krsna. He had attraction. He was, although a boy of twenty years old, He had many followers. He ordered, "Oh, Kazi has ordered to stop. Now I order that hundreds of thousands of people shall assemble this night, and we shall go to the Kazi's house." This is civil disobedience. So people agreed, and there were hundreds of thousands of mrdangas and hundreds of thousands of people, and they chanted and crossed the whole street, don't care for any police action. And the Kazi saw, "Oh, it is a mass movement." He was afraid. You see? When any movement is taken by the people, then the government becomes afraid. Just like the marijuana movement? Now there is no more legal action. Government cannot because all people are taking to marijuana. You see? What is that? Mariana, marijuana. Marijuana. So you make this marijuana, taken by all people, then police will be afraid. You see? They'll not dare to stop you.

So when there was talk with Kazi... Chand Kazi was learned man. So first of all Caitanya Mahaprabhu challenged, "My dear uncle..." He established the relation to pacify Caitanya. "My Nimai, Nimai..." He called just like boy. He was boy. "Nimai, oh, Your grandfather Nilambara Cakravarti, I call him caca." Caca means uncle. The Muslims they call... In India these Britishers created feelings between Hindus and Muslims, but otherwise the Hindus and Muslims are living since eight centuries. So in the village they lived peacefully, and the Hindus call the Muslims "caca", and the Muslim call the Hindu... In this way they make some friendly relationship. There was no ill feeling. Even they will invite, the Hindus will invite. In our childhood we have seen, in marriage ceremony or in some religious ceremony also, some Muslim friends were invited, and they were received. Similarly Muslims also invite some Hindus. They'll make separate... My father, he used to be guest of a Muslim gentleman. He was his customer. So he used to make separate arrangement my father, a brahmana attendant, supplying all foodstuff. So there was no... And he was coming to our house, so he, accompanied with his servant Muslims, we used to supply foodstuff. They were cooking in their own way. Of course, no meat was allowed, but there were friendship. And while departing, he would give us some money, four rupees, five rupees, in the hands of all our brothers and sisters and offer respect to my mother as "Auntie." These feelings were there. This ill feeling was created by the Britishers. When they saw that Gandhi is improving the Hindu-Muslim situation, they created a, what is called, a split. Anyway, that is political. So this Chand Kazi informed Caitanya Mahaprabhu, "Nimai, I call Your grandfather, Your mother's father, as my caca, as my uncle. So in that way Your mother is my sister according to our village relationship, and You are my nephew. So how is that a nephew is so much angry upon his uncle? Is it not good?" So Caitanya Mahaprabhu could understand that he has come down. He has now become uncle. So He said, "Yes, My dear uncle, I know that. It is not My duty to be angry with you, but how is that, I am your nephew, I have come to your home, and you went upstairs, you did not receive Me? Anyway, what is done is done, forget."

So then they sat down and talked. The first challenge was Caitanya Mahaprabhu's, that "My dear uncle, what is your this religion that you're eating father and mother?" That was His first challenge. And the Kazi said, "What is that? What do You mean by that?" "You are eating a bull and cow. Cow is your mother. You are drinking milk; therefore she is your mother. And the bull is helping you, producing your food, maintaining. As the father maintains you and mother gives you milk. And do you think it is good to kill them?" So Kazi, he was also learned, "Oh, Your Vedic scripture also, there is cow sacrifice." Caitanya Mahaprabhu immediately said, "No, that is not killing. That was giving a new body to show the strength of the Vedic mantras." A cow was sacrificed in the fire and by mantra, by chanting of the mantra, the cow will come out with a new body, young body. That was not killing. So similarly, here also, Krsna is giving the same argument, that "You are lamenting on your grandfather. He has got old body, but if he is killed in this battle, he'll have a new, fresh new body. So you should be joyful. Why are you lamenting?" So this argument was forwarded by Krsna, that... Now, just like this child. This child can hope many things. He has got immense duration of life now beginning, and what hope I have got? I am now this old body, say five years or ten years more. So I cannot expect, hope anything more, than this child. So Krsna is giving that "There is no question of lamentation for your grandfather. Your grandfather is going to have a new lease of life. Why should you be sorry?" So this argument He is forwarding, but nobody will agree to this argument. Yes. Go on.

Madhudvisa: "Such changes of body are meant for varieties of enjoyment or suffering by the living entity according to one's own work in this life. So Bhisma and Drona, being noble souls, were surely going to have either spiritual bodies in the next or at least life in godly bodies."

Prabhupada: Yes. "Now, so far your grandfather is concerned, Bhismadeva, he is one of the greatest devotees. So as soon as he gives up this body, he's going to Vaikuntha." Same example, as I told you the other day, that muni-putra... Ma jiva ma jiva muni-putraka ciram jiva raja-putra. "Oh, the son of saintly person, you don't live. And oh, the son of a king, you live forever." Why? Because the son of a saintly person, he is undergoing austerities, penances, disciplinary activities. So his life is, his future is so bright that he's going to Vaikuntha. And this, the son of king, he's simply indulging in sense gratification. So he's going to hell. So the person who is destined to go to kingdom of God, the sooner he dies is better for him. And this person, one who is going to hell, the later he dies it is good for him because as soon as he dies the hell is prepared for him. So similarly, "Why should you lament for your grandfather and teacher? They are so highly elevated, spiritually elevated. Death will take place so long this body is there. Now they have come to fight as a matter of duty. So there is no lamentation." This is the instruction Krsna is giving. Yes.

Madhudvisa: "In either case there was no cause for lamentation. Any man who has perfect knowledge of the constitution of the individual soul, the Supersoul, and nature, both material and spiritual, is called a dhira or a most sober man."

Prabhupada: Dhira. Dhira means sober, is not disturbed. A person who is not disturbed by paltry causes, he's called dhira. Another example of dhira is given by poet Kalidasa. He was a great poet, mundane poet. So he said that dhira is one who is not disturbed even in the presence of disturbance. When there is no disturbance, one may not be disturbed, but in the presence of disturbance, one who is not disturbed, he is called dhira. The cause of disturbance. Just like a person trained in restriction of sex life, so when he's perfect, even there is cause of sex impetus, he'll not be disturbed. That is the, called dhira. So he is describing that "These persons are highly elevated. You are also My friend. Why you are disturbed in this way? That does not look well." Go on.

Madhudvisa: "Such a man is never deluded by the change of bodies by the living entity."

Prabhupada: Yes. A man is crying, "Oh, my father is dead," or "My friend is dead, my..." so on, so on, crying. But one who is dhira he knows, "What is this death? He has changed his body, so there is no question of lamentation." So how much spiritual education required to come to this point? Yes, go on.

Madhudvisa: "O son of Kunti, the nonpermanent appearance of heat and cold, happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course are like the appearance of winter and summer season. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed."

Prabhupada: Now the question is, "Yes, I understand that my grandfather is spirit soul and this body is material. Still, by nature I'll be unhappy if my grandfather is killed and my teacher is killed. I'll be unhappy." So Krsna is instructing Arjuna that this kind of unhappiness, distress, is this world. You cannot avoid it. These are necessary distresses. The example He's giving that severe cold. In the winter season, in the month of January or some month, the winter is very severe, intolerable. Sometimes somewhere it is below 30 degrees zero. But what is to be done? The people in such part of the world who live... Just like in Canada it goes sometimes 30 degrees below zero. Does it mean that they'll close their offices and work and everything? No. Everything is going on as usual. One has to tolerate. That's all. In India also, in India and other parts of the eastern countries. Just like Arabia, Iraq or... During summertime, the temperature is 135. You cannot imagine 135. In India we have experienced temperature, I have experienced up to 118 degrees. Not always, unusually. But 110 degree is usual during summertime, 110 degree. Usual temperature. So does it mean... The scorching heat, you cannot get out on the street. But still, one has to go to office, one has to go to work. There are some cases of heat stroke. Still, nobody can stop his duty. "Similarly, even if you think that by discharging your duty as a warrior, as a ksatriya, your grandfather will be killed or... Of course, there is no cause of lamentation. He'll get another new body. But even if you think, if your bodily concept is so strong, if you are sorry, so you have to, I mean to say, tolerate. Just one has to tolerate extreme heat and extreme cold." There is no cause of crying, "Oh, there is extreme heat, extreme heat." What you'll do? That is nature's law. Extreme heat -- everyone is cooking. Nobody says, "Oh, today is extreme heat. I cannot cook." No. Everybody is cooking, although there is suffering. Similarly, there is extreme cold, but everyone is taking bath in the Ganges. Nobody says, "Oh, I'll not take bath. So duty has to be done. There may be some suffering, temporary. Even though... Krsna never says, "Oh, my dear Arjuna, you are My friend. All right, you are feeling so much sorry. All right, I shall do it for you. You sit down, silent." No. Krsna never says that. "You have to do it." Although He says that "This battle is arranged by Me. They're already killed. Nobody is going back. Still, you have to do it."

So our duty, persons who are Krsna consciousness, engaged in Krsna consciousness, they should always know that everything is to be done by Krsna. We cannot do anything without Krsna's sanction. But still, we have to do our own duty. Not that, "Oh, Krsna will do everything. Therefore we shall not try for a storefront or we shall not go to see this man or... Krsna..." No! That is lethargy. You have to do your own duty. But result, depend on Krsna. This is Krsna conscious. You don't be sorry if there is failure, you don't be unhappy if there is success, uh, you don't be too much, I mean to say, jubilant if there is success. Everything is done by Krsna. This is the attitude of Krsna consciousness. They have to do their own duty. Never mind whether it is suffering or happiness. It doesn't matter.

Madhudvisa: "O best among men, the person who is not disturbed by happiness and distress, and is steady in both, is certainly eligible for liberation."

Prabhupada: Yes. This is the sign, characteristics or symptoms of a person who is going to be liberated in this life. He has to do his duty. So far we are concerned, we have accepted Krsna consciousness duty, so we have to execute our duties faithfully and seriously. Then it is sure Krsna will give us the desired result. A nice example is given. Just like a girl is married to a boy. Generally, girls desire a child. So if she, after the marriage, if she immediately wants a child, that is not possible. But because she is married, and if she serves faithfully her husband, her husband is pleased and there is love, in due course of time, there will be child. Why there is hesitation? There will be child. Similarly, we have taken to Krsna consciousness. If we discharge our duties faithfully, then in due course of time, Krsna will give the desired result. Don't be hesitant. Don't be doubtful. It is sure. Krsna says that tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9]. Anyone who is in Krsna consciousness perfectly, for him, after leaving this body, he's coming to Me. This is His assurance. So we haven't got any doubt, Krsna has assured. So let us do our duty perfectly, as far as possible. We cannot execute anything perfectly in presence of Krsna because He is infinite, we are finite. Our energy, our talent, everything is finite. But if we try our best, then bhava-grahi-janardana. Krsna sees only how much sincere I am, how much sincerely I'm executing the duties entrusted upon me. That's all. Otherwise it is not in our power to serve Krsna perfectly. That is not... Because we are very teeny. But be assured that the desired result will come if we act sincerely to the point. Yes.

Madhudvisa: "Those who are seers of the truth have concluded that of the nonexistent there is no endurance and of the eternal there is no cessation. Seers have concluded this by studying the nature of both." Purport: "There is no endurance of the changing body. That the body is changing every moment by the actions and reactions of different cells is admitted by modern medical science, and thus growth and old age are taking place. But the spiritual soul exists permanently, remaining the same in all changing circumstances of the body and mind. That is the difference between matter and spirit. By nature the body is ever-changing and the soul is eternal. This conclusion is established by all classes of seers of the truth, impersonalists and personalists."

Prabhupada: This is... So far the constitution of the spirit is concerned, it is eternal. That is accepted by all philosophers, personalists and impersonalists. The only difference is that the impersonalist says that after liberation, after getting freed from this bodily contamination, the spirit soul mixes with the Supreme Soul, all-pervading, without any individual existence. Just like the same example, that the small sky within the pitcher. When the pitcher is broken, the small sky within the pitcher mixes with the big sky. The Vaisnava philosopher says that the small sky is individual. It mixes with the big sky, but it keeps its individuality. The example is given in this connection: just like a green bird entering a green tree. So when the bird enters the tree, nobody can find out where is the bird because the leaves of the tree are green and the bird is also green. Nobody can trace out. But that does not mean the bird has lost its individuality. The individuality is there. Just like you see one airplane is flying in the air, and when it goes too far, it appears that it has disappeared. It seems to us that there is no more that airplane. It has mixed with the sky. But actually it is not. It is still there, individual existence. It is my ignorance that I see that it is no more separate, it has mixed with the sky. Just like in the daytime we don't find any star in the sky. Due to the dazzling sunshine, we cannot see any stars. At night, we can see millions of stars, there are. Similarly, that is the impersonalism and personalism. One whose knowledge is not perfect, they think imperson, everything homogeneous. And one whose knowledge is perfect... Vedas also confirm it... Just like in the Isopanisad, there is a verse in which it is stated that "Please withdraw Your effulgence so that I can see Your real face." Just like the sun globe. You cannot see it perfectly due to the dazzling sunshine. But the sun globe is there, and in the glow there are living entities, and there is a principal head man, god. They are not man because their body is made of fire. So similarly, the first, impersonal impression, Brahman, then further advanced, Supersoul, and when further advanced, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna. Brahmeti paramatmeti bhagavan iti sabdyate [SB 1.2.11]. First realization, Brahman, impersonal; the second realization is Paramatma, Supersoul; and the last realization is the personal form of God, Krsna. Go on.

Madhudvisa: "In the Visnu Purana also this truth has been established. It is stated there that Visnu and His abodes all have self-illuminated spiritual existence. The words existent and nonexistent refer only to spirit and matter. That is the version of all seers of truth. This is the beginning of the instruction by the Lord to the living entities who are bewildered by the influence of ignorance. Removal of this ignorance means reestablishment of the eternal relationship between the worshiper and the worshipable and the consequent understanding of the difference between part-and-parcel living entities and the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One can understand the nature of the Supreme by thorough study of oneself, the difference between oneself and the Supreme being understood as the relationship between the part and the whole. In the Vedanta-sutra as well as in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, the Supreme has been accepted as the origin of all emanations. Such emanations are experienced by superior and inferior natural sequences. The living entity belongs to the superior nature, as will be revealed in the Seventh Chapter. Although there is no difference between the energy and the energetic, the energetic is accepted as supreme and the energy, or nature, is accepted as the subordinate. The relationship of the living entities therefore is always to be subordinate to the Supreme Lord, as with master and the servant or the teacher and the taught. Such clear knowledge is impossible to grasp under the spell of ignorance. To drive away such ignorance, the Lord teaches the Bhagavad-gita for enlightenment of all beings for all time." Seventeen: "That which pervades the body is indestructible. No one is able to destroy the imperishable soul."

Prabhupada: Now, "pervades the body," that is consciousness. The soul is very small, but... Just like you take one grain of, what is called, poison? Snake poison? Arsenic? Poison called? What is called? Yes, venom poison.

Tamala Krsna: Arsenic is poison.

Prabhupada: Yes. You take only one grain and mix with water and just inject within your body. So immediately the action is there that your heart fails and you die. One small half grain of pota (?)cyanide, you take, just touch on the tongue. According to the chemist there is no taste of pota cyanide. Because what is this... Whether it is sour or sweet, because there was no chance of tasting it. As soon as the taste is, the man is finished. He cannot say what is the sour or sweet. So if a material thing, a small particle, has got so much power that immediately it can stop the function of the body, immediately spreads all over the body, so the soul, the spiritual spark, grain, a small grain, just like atom, it is so powerful that so long that spiritual grain, spirit is in the heart, this body is so nice. As soon as it is passed, immediately body begins to decompose. Immediately. So it is so powerful. If a material thing can spread all over the body, why not the spirit? This is consciousness. Because the spirit soul is within the heart, I can pinch any part of my body, I feel that this is consciousness. This is consciousness. Go on reading. So because... Just like the effect of a poisonous grain of material thing is immediately felt all over the body, similarly by the consciousness which is spreading all over the body, you can understand that there is soul.

Madhudvisa: "This verse more clearly explains the real nature of the soul which is spread all over the body. Anyone can understand what is spread all over the body. It is consciousness. Everyone is conscious about the pains and pleasures of the body in part or as a whole. This spreading of consciousness is limited within one's own body."

Prabhupada: Now, this consciousness, the Mayavadi philosopher says, "Yes, I am consciousness. The same theory. This small consciousness, but as soon as I break this body, the small consciousness will mix up with the supreme consciousness." That is their theory. But anyway, whatever that theory may be, at least in my present condition, I, my consciousness, is limited within this body. I cannot say that I am superconscious. Had I been superconscious, then the pains and pleasure going on (in) your body I would have felt. But because I am limited within this body, therefore the pains and pleasure of my body I can understand. Therefore my consciousness is limited. You cannot argue that you are the same... That will be explained. Krsna says in the Thirteenth Chapter that ksetra-jnam capi mam viddhi sarva-ksetresu bharata [Bg. 13.3]. Ksetra-jna, the soul, and, is within this body. Therefore soul is called ksetra-jna. Ksetra-jna means "one who knows about this body." I am conscious about my this body. You are conscious about your body. But Krsna is conscious of your body and my body and everyone's body. Therefore He's also ksetra-jna, but He's ksetra-jna, He's Supersoul. Just the same example. Just like the sun, during meridian, is on your head. At 5,000 miles, you ask your friend "Where is the sun?" He'll also say, "It is on my head." [break]

If a person is actually executing devotional service, then he must be happy. If he's not happy, then he's not doing properly. So first thing is this. He might be doing something in the name of devotional service. If he's actually rendering devotional service, then he must be feeling. Just like if you are eating actually, then you must feel strength and satisfaction of your hunger. You cannot say, "I'm eating, but I'm not satisfied of my hunger." That is impossible. This is not possible. Then you are not eating. Or you are eating, but it is being devoured by the worms within your intestines. Sometimes it happens. If there are many worms within the intestines, you go on voraciously eating, but you don't get strength because the eating substance, the essence, is taken by the worms. Therefore the worm treatment is there to kill the worms. Otherwise they will eat everything. You'll feel hungry, but will not get any strength. This is the worm disease. So if I am actually rendering devotional service and I'm not getting any happiness, that means there is some maya's play. Otherwise there is no such reasoning. He must feel happy. Then he has to rectify the process of his service. Not to change but rectify the process. (aside) What is that? (laughs) It cannot be. If you are actually executing devotional service, you must feel happy. If you don't feel happy, then you are not executing. There is some flaw. Yes.

Nandarani: When householder women raise their children in Krsna consciousness, this seems to be an indirect service for Krsna. Should they try to serve Him more directly by, you know, maybe cooking in the temple or being, you know, something like this, more directly, or is raising children and just having the household function, is that enough service? Is that enough service?

Prabhupada: Yes, the thing is we should be Krsna conscious. Just like electrification. Touching electricity by one wire, another joining another, another wire, if the touch is there factual, then the electricity is everywhere. Similarly if our Krsna consciousness is rightly connected, then there is no question of direct or indirect. Because absolute world there is no difference. As soon as it is touched with the direct connection... That is called disciplic succession. Because the connection is coming down one after another, so if we touch here, the spiritual master who is connected by the same way, then the electric connection is there. There is no question of direct or indirect. Evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo viduh [Bg. 4.2]. Simply we have to see whether the connection is disconnected. If the connection is there, tight, then the electricity come without fail. So in our conditioned stage there will be so many doubts, so many implication. But the same thing as I gave you example, that don't be very much hasty to receive the result immediately. Simply we have to follow. We have to follow. Tat-tat-karma-pravartanat. This is advised by Rupa Gosvami. The six things we have to take particular care, and six things we have to avoid in order to be perfect in Krsna consciousness.

So utsahad dhairyan niscayat. The first principle is one must be very enthusiastic. He must believe that Krsna has said that, na me bhaktah pranasyati, "My devotee will never be vanquished." So "Let me becomes Krsna's devotee sincerely. I must become Krsna's devotee sincerely." This is called enthusiasm. Then dhairyat. "I have become Krsna's devotee, but still I'm not feeling happy. How is that?" So therefore you have to become patient. The enthusiasm must be there, you must be patient also. And niscayat. Niscayat means you must be confident. "Oh, Krsna has said that His devotee will never be vanquished, so surely I shall not be vanquished, even though I don't feel now. Let me do my duty." Utsahad dhairyan niscayat tat-tat-karma-pravartanat. But you have to do your duties as they are prescribed. Sato vrtteh. You should not... There should be no duplicity. Sato vrtteh means plain dealing, straight dealing. Sato vrtteh, and sadhu-sange, and in the company of devotees. So one must be enthusiastic, one must be patient, one must be confident, one must execute the duties, one must associate with devotees, and one must be very honest in dealing. Six things. If these six things are there, sure success.

Similarly there are six things which should be avoided. What are those? Atyaharah prayasas ca prajalpo niyamagrahah, laulyam jana-sangas ca sadbhir bhaktir vinasyati [NoI 2]. Atyahara, too much eating or too much, I mean to say, keeping bank balance or money, or collecting more than the necessities. Atyahara. Generally, too much eating is prohibited. We have to eat simply just to keep the body and soul nicely to execute Krsna consciousness. Atyaharah prayasas ca. Prayasa means taking some risky work which will require too much endeavor. We should avoid that. Atyaharah prayasah, prajalpa, nonsense talking which has no connection with Krsna consciousness. Atyaharah prayasah prajalpo niyamagrahah. Following the rules, but actually I'm not very much careful in executing the work. So niyamagraha. Niyamagraha means not to accept the rules and regulation, and another meaning is simply to accept the rules and regulation without good effect. Atyaharah prayasas ca prajalpo niyamagrahah laulyam, greediness, and jana-sangas ca, and associating with nondevotees. These things are against execution of devotional service, and the first thing, the patience, enthusiasm, and confidence, these six things are favorable. So we have to take notice of the don'ts and dos. Then it will be all right. Do this, don't do this. There are six kinds of "don't do this," and six kinds of "do this." So that will be nice. Yes?

Madhudvisa: Prabhupada, when you say we must be honest in our dealings... If we have an advantage to, to take advantage of somebody else for Krsna, for Krsna consciousness, is this permissible? If we have a chance to take advantage of somebody to get money from them, not by stealing but by means... (Prabhupada chuckles) Is this permissible?

Prabhupada: Yes, but that is not by your discretion. You have to consult your spiritual master. Just like what Krsna says Yudhisthira Maharaja, "Yudhisthira, My dear brother Yudhisthira, you go and tell," I mean to say, "Dronacarya, that ‘Your son is dead.' " Because this gentleman would not die unless he hears the message of the death of his son. So he was not dying. So Yudhisthira was commissioned to speak this lie, that "You go and say that ‘Your son is dead.' " And he says that "I never spoke lie. I cannot do that." Now here the order is coming from Krsna, therefore he should have executed the order immediately. Although speaking lie for common man is sin, but because it is in relationship with Krsna, it is not sin. So that telling lie should not be taken risk of at one's own discretion. It must be ordered by Krsna or by His representative. Telling lie is always sinful. That's all right. But if Krsna says "Tell lie," it is not sinful. That is the secret. You can violate the laws only on the direct order of Krsna or His representative. That's all. That is common sense. Just like a political person is engaged to kill somebody under superior order. And if he can kill, he is rewarded, he is given high post. But the same man, if he kills by his own discretion, he'll be hanged. So serving greater purpose, supreme purpose, absolute purpose, there is no question of such piety or sinful. But in the ordinary field, there must be "This is pious, this is sinful." So that discretion should not be taken by oneself, but it should be consulted.

Jaya-gopala: If one can engage one who is demonic in service by telling a lie...

Prabhupada: General principle is that if you can engage anyone in Krsna consciousness, that is good. That is good. That is also said in the Bhakti-rasamrta. Yena tena prakarena manah krsne nivesayet. If your aim is to engage him in Krsna consciousness, if you do something which is not very straight, that is allowed. (laughter) Because you are doing very good to him. Suppose a man is drunkard. So suppose if you say, "Oh, all right. I'll give you a very nice bottle of whiskey at cheap price. Give me fifteen dollars." And if you take fifteen dollars and engage it (in) Krsna consciousness, that cheating is allowed. (laughter) Because that fifteen dollars he'll take and drink. So you have by some way taken away that fifteen dollars and engaged in Krsna consciousness. So that you have done good to him. So therefore it requires little intelligence and discretion. But that does not mean you shall cheat fifteen dollars from everywhere. But there is no cheating because anyone who is not Krsna conscious, he is a drunkard. He is drunkard, he is illusioned under material spell. You see? You see? The greatest drunkard, everyone who is not Krsna conscious. Therefore any way, if you can induce him to spend something of his hard earned money in Krsna consciousness, that is very good to him. Yes. This is called ajnata-sukrti. He does not know, but he is advanced one step to Krsna consciousness. Anybody who is contributing even a farthing to you, he is advanced in Krsna consciousness. It is so nice thing. Yes.

Young man: I had something come up once. Is it all right to cheat the government?

Prabhupada: Oh, we don't care for anyone. (laughter) We are on the supreme government. (laughs) But don't take the risk. No, that should be not our policy. But the basic principle is that if some way or other you can engage a materialistic person's money into Krsna consciousness, it is good for him. It is good for him. You may take some tactics, that doesn't matter. But not... We cannot take anything for our personal consideration. Yes?

Young woman: I have a question from Brahma-murti. Why did people in the past ages sacrifice animals, and how did Krsna put a stop to this?

Prabhupada: Oh, yes. That I've explained just a few minutes before. The animals were put into the sacrificial fire. By Vedic mantra, he was given new life. But at the present moment such expert priests and brahmanas are not available. Therefore it is stopped. Animal sacrifice is stopped. Because it is Kali-yuga. Nobody is reading, cultivating Vedic mantras. So in this age, this mantra is called maha-mantra, chant Hare Krsna. That's all. All Vedic mantras are now gone to hell. You see? Nobody can properly chant Vedic mantras and take the benefit out of it. But this mantra, any way you chant, neglectfully or properly, chant Hare Krsna and the result is there. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha. There is no other alternative, no other alternative, no other alternative, kalau, in this age. So the Vedic mantra is now gone. This is also Vedic mantra, but this is Vedic maha-mantra, the greatest of all mantras. Yes. So sacrifice everything and chant this mantra and go to Krsna, back to Godhead. That's all. (break -- kirtana)

Prabhupada: You are typing?

Devotee: Yes.

Prabhupada: Where is the boy? Virabhadra. Virabhadra. Huh?

Tamala Krsna: Something happened to him. He was in an accident today.

Prabhupada: What is that?

Tamala Krsna: Downtown he was... He is all right, but he was hit by a car. He crossed the street and a car went through the red light and hit him. So they took him to the hospital and he has to remain there overnight for X-rays. But Visnujana is with him, and I think he's all right. It was just his body... He was scraped. The car hit him and he was pushed along the street. He got bounced on the street so his skin was rubbed and burned a little from the burning.

Devotee: At most a fractured rib or two.

Devotee: They can sue the person and get some money.

Tamala Krsna: We're going to sue the man who was driving the car.

Prabhupada: So you have taken the number?

Tamala Krsna: Yes, we have all the details.

Prabhupada: So ask him something to pay. Otherwise sue.

Devotee: Prabhupada? The same thing happened to me and I got about a thousand dollars. So if they can do the same.

Prabhupada: You ask five thousand. (laughter)

Tamala Krsna: Yes, five thousand.

Devotee: A young boy...

Prabhupada: No, he should pay ten thousand because that boy is Krsna conscious. (laughter) Ordinary accident five thousand. (chuckles) All right. He's all right?

Tamala Krsna: Yes, he's all right.

Prabhupada: Not... (kirtana) (end)
