Avoiding The Ten Offenses

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: Just like... I am not criticizing, but it is, I mean to say, a human consideration. Suppose if you have committed some wrong thing within our jurisdiction and you come to me, "Swamiji, I have committed this." So I say, "All right. Don't do it again. Excused." Now, second day you come again. You say, "I have committed this." All right. Second day I can also excuse. The third day also, I can excuse, but fourth day I'll not excuse. Don't make it official business. Just like go to the church every week and confess and... Confessing your sinful activities before Lord Jesus Christ or his representative, surely your sinful activities are squared up. But does it mean, very nice, that every week, the whole week you shall commit sinful activities, and at the end of the week you shall go and confess? Does it look very well? You are not ashamed that "Every week I commit these sinful activities, and on the seventh day I confess"? This process should not be adopted, that because God's name, God's remembrance actually squares up all of our sinful activities. That's a fact. But how it is that we shall go on committing sinful activities and square it up by chanting Hare Krsna or by confessing? No. This is the particular point. One should carefully note. Just like Jagai-Madhai. Jagai-Madhai, they were the greatest sinful men during Caitanya Mahaprabhu's time. So when they surrendered to Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu with confession, "My Lord, we have committed so many sinful activities. Please save us," that Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked them that "Yes, I will accept you and I'll save you, provided you promise that no more you shall commit such sinful activities." So they agreed, "Yes. Whatever we have done, that's all right. No more we are going to do it." Then Caitanya Mahaprabhu accepted them and they became great devotee and their life was successful.

The same process is here also. This initiation means that you should, everyone should remember that whatever sinful activities one might have done in his past life, that is now account closed. Debit and credit closed. Now, from this day, no more sinful activities. What are those sinful activities? That is simple. We have mentioned. You should take it note. No illicit sex life. Beyond marriage, there is no sex life. No intoxication. Even drinking tea, coffee, they are also intoxication-cigarette smoking. No intoxication. No meat-eating. Simple. Only Krsna prasadam. Whatever... If you remain in the temple you will get Krsna prasadam, and if not, outside you prepare your capati, dahl, offer to Krsna and take. Don't take anything except Krsna prasada. The third... And no gambling or unnecessary sporting. People are wasting time. So many sportings they have invented-sporting balls, this ball, that ball. You see? Human life is very short. We do not know when we shall die. Before that, we must prepare ourself for the next life. Next life means directly going back to Krsna, highest perfection. As you'll find in the Bhagavad-gita, yanti deva-vrata devan pitrn yanti pitr-vratah [Bg. 9.25]. There are innumerable varieties of planet. The higher planetary system, they are resided by demigods, very powerful. They are also human beings, but they are very beautiful; they are very powerful. So you can go there. The moon planet, sun planet -- that is clearly stated -- if you act accordingly, as they are prescribed, that "If you want to go to the moon planet, you have to do like this," then after leaving this body, you can go there. Similarly, you can go any planet. Similarly, you can go to the planet of Krsna. So those who are intelligent, they are not concerned with..., any more with any planet within this material world. Because wherever you go, the four principles of material miseries, namely birth, death, old age, and disease, will follow. Either you go to the moon planet or sun planet or Venus planet or any planet. Yad gatva na nivartante tad dhama paramam mama [Bg. 15.6]. But that planet where going no more comes back in the material world, that is the most sublime planet. So we are... Krsna consciousness means we are preparing living entities directly going back to Krsna planet. The highest perfection. So this is opportunity. You have got human form of life. Now you have got our association. You have got all information from the Bhagavad-gita. So the opportunity is there. Now if you don't utilize it, then you can commit your suicide. Nobody can check you. Otherwise you can utilize all these facilities and go directly to Krsna.

So this is the process. Initiation means beginning of that perfection. One has to utilize it properly, then there is no doubt. It is assured in the Bhagavad-gita. Krsna assures if you believe in Krsna, if you believe in His Personality of Godhead, then there cannot be any doubt. And let us execute Krsna consciousness and follow the rules and regulation, and then life is sure to be successful. Now chant mantra. Vande aham sri guru (chants fire sacrifice prayers, devotees responding) Now chant Hare Krsna. [break] ...bead. In this way you come to this side. Again begin from here, come to this side. In this way sixteen rounds. If you feel difficulty you ask your Godbrothers. They'll give instruction. And your spiritual name is Kamalasana dasa.

Kamalasana: Kamalasana dasa?

Prabhupada: K-a-m-a-l-a, Kamala, s-a-n-a, asana. Kamalasana dasa. Kamalasana. Kamalasana means Visnu or Brahma. Brahma is also seated on the lotus sitting place. Asana means sitting place, and kamala means lotus. You have seen Brahma is sitting on kamala? Similarly, Visnu is also sitting on kamala. So Kamalasana dasa means you are Visnu dasa. That is the meaning. Kamalasana means Visnu. This Visnu picture, you see? This is Visnu. So now we shall perform... Chant Hare Krsna. (someone breaks stick for fire) Yes. Chant.

Govinda dasi: Prabhupada? Could you spell it so that I can...

Prabhupada: K-a-m-a-l-a-s-a-n-a. Kamalasana.

Govinda dasi: K-a-m-a-l-a-s-a-n-a. Kamalasana.

Prabhupada: Chant Hare Krsna. (sticks breaking, devotees chanting) Why so much? Least. Give me least. Not so much required. All right. When I shall say svaha you'll take all, little, little. Om apavitrah pavitro va sarva... (chants prayers, devotees respond) Now bow down.

nama om visnu-padaya krsna-presthaya bhu-tale
srimate bhaktivedanta-svamin iti namine

Now chant Hare Krsna. (kirtana)

So in the morning, evening, the aratrika should be performed, and this should be parikrama, circumambulating within this hall three times at least. These processes should be followed. Krsna has given you nice place. You utilize it properly. So there are many other processes. Gradually, it will be introduced. All of a sudden, you cannot assimilate. (laughter) So this kirtana, evening aratrika and circumambulating... If possible, you can circumambulate around the temple so that others may see also what they're doing. Yes. If not, within the temple you can circumambulate. Now you can distribute prasadam. Today's function is finished. Where is some... No fruits? You have not arranged any fruits?

Devotee: I made some bread, too.

Prabhupada: Fruits. Bread not required. That's all.

Birabhadra: I would like to know if it is all right to play the Battle of Kuruksetra.

Prabhupada: Huh?

Birabhadra: Like, is it all right to pretend you're Bhisma and pretend...

Prabhupada: What does he say?

Tamala Krsna: He wants to know if it's all right to make believe he's in the Battle of Kuruksetra. Sometimes we are playing that he is Bhisma and one of us might be Arjuna or Krsna.

Prabhupada: No. No. You should not ever think that "I am Bhisma. I am Arjuna." No. Never think like that. You should always think that "I am the servant of Bhisma, servant of Arjuna, servant of Krsna, servant of His servant." Never think... That is Mayavada. If I think I am Krsna or if I think I am Bhisma, if I think I am Prahlada, this is Mayavada. This monism, this is offense. Never think like that. You should always think that "I am servant of such devotee or Krsna." Never think that "I am that." No.

Visnujana: What he wants to know is that... He has a little ksatriya blood in him. He likes to play. He likes to express his energy a lot, run around.

Prabhupada: That is different thing. Just like you have got the blood of your father. That does not mean you are father. That is different thing. Everything is one: Krsna. That is the difference between the philosophy of Mayavada and Vaisnava. They simply take the One, but we take One, but there is diversity. That they do not understand. Actually, unity... Diversity in unity. Monism means they do not accept the diversity. They simply take that oneness. Oneness is certainly -- there is nothing but Krsna. Just like Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita, "I am everywhere spread." Maya tatam idam sarvam. "Everything, whatever you see, that is I am, but I am not there." Naham tesu avasthitah [Bg. 9.4]. They are existing. Everything existing in Krsna. But that does not mean... Just like this table. The table is also Krsna in one sense, because it is the manifestation of Krsna's energy. Therefore this is not different from Krsna. But if you think that "Instead of worshiping Krsna, let me worship this table," that is wrong, nonsense. This is the difference between Mayavada philosophy and Vaisnava philosophy. The Mayavada philosophy says that even if I worship the table, it is all right. But Krsna does not say. It is Mayavada philosophers said. Krsna says, "Yes, table is existing in Me. I am also table. But I am not there." You see in the Bhagavad-gita. So never think like that, that "I am Bhisma" or "I am Prahlada" or "I am..." No. You are always servant of such devotee. That's all.

Birabhadra: If we pretend we're the servant of... If we pretend we're the servant of Bhisma and..
.
Prabhupada: Servant of his servant [Cc. Madhya 13.80].

Birabhadra: Servant of the servant of Bhisma...

Prabhupada: Yes, that's all.

Birabhadra: Is it all right to play the Battle of Kuruksetra if you're the servant of the servant of Bhisma?

Prabhupada: What is that?

Visnujana: Is it all right to play like he's fighting the battle as servant of the servant of Bhisma? He likes to play like he's in the battle. He likes to run and play. It makes him think of the Lord.

Prabhupada: Oh, you are playing in the battle? No, you should not manufacture anything. You should be directed by the spiritual master. Don't manufacture anything. That is not good. You'll manufacture today something; next day you'll manufacture something; then you'll go astray. Don't do that. To be under disciplinary activities means to be directed by the authorities. Don't manufacture anything. There are so many activities. Why should we manufacture some other thing? Manufacturing means Mayavada, mental concoction. That is not the process of bhakti. Yes.

Jaya-gopala: If he plays...

Prabhupada: Mahajano yena gatah sa panthah [Cc. Madhya 17.186]. You have to simply follow the footprints. Yes.

Jaya-gopala: If we were in plays and we are playing such great personalities, how should we be thinking?

Prabhupada: Huh?

Jaya-gopala: In plays if we would be...

Prabhupada: Play is play. Suppose you are playing the part of Cromwell, are you Cromwell? So similarly, why do you think like that you have become Cromwell?

Jaya-gopala: No. How should we think, though?

Prabhupada: You think yourself that you are servant of him. Suppose you are playing the part of George Washington in a drama. Are you George Washington? But while playing, you may feel like that; otherwise the play will not be successful. That is different thing. (pause) So Govinda dasi, so long you are here, morning, evening, you should see that the arati  is performed. In the morning, evening, and lunchtime. Yes.

Jaya-gopala: When one is fully engaged in transcendental loving service, how is freedom of choice playing a part in your..., in choice of service? Does one have a choice? Like when Krsna completely takes over one's life.

Prabhupada: I do not follow what you said. [break] (chanting of Bhaja bhakata) One line is missing. Purusottama, you have taught them? (referring to arati song) Thank you. That's all right. Now you learn it, it will be all right. Now you can take prasadam. Hare Krsna. In this way one or two, practice daily, then it will come out nice. Yes.

Tamala Krsna: (indistinct) take prasadam, Prabhupada?

Prabhupada: Yes. (arati song) Loudly. (end)

Lilavataras--No End To Them

Lilavataras--No End To Them
Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya 20.294-298

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada:

trtiya-purusa visnu-'guna-avatara'
dui avatara-bhitara ganana tanhara
virat vyasti-jivera tenho antaryami
ksirodakasayi tenho-palana-karta, svami

So Garbhodakasayi Visnu; then next Visnu, the third incarnation, is Ksirodakasayi Visnu. Within this universe there is a planet near the polestar which is called Ksirodakasayi planet, and there Lord Visnu in His incarnation of antaryami, Supersoul... He is acting as the Supersoul. And He is the universal form. When you think of universal form of the Lord, that is the manifestation of this Ksirodakasayi Visnu. And that Ksirodakasayi Visnu as Paramatma, Supersoul, is situated in everyone's heart, even within the atom also. Andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham [Bs. 5.35]. Paramanu means atom. Within the atom also. We think of God as very great, universal form, but God can take also form less than the atom. That is God's power. He is not only great, greatest, but He is the smallest. Anor aniyan mahato mahiyan. Mahato mahiyan means greatest of the great, and anor aniyan, the smallest of the small. We cannot think how small He can become. That is His inconceivable potency. So within this material world, He is within the atom, and He is within everyone's heart, in everywhere, all-pervading, and at the same time universal form, the biggest form.

virat vyasti-jivera tenho antaryami
ksirodakasayi tenho-palana-karta, svami

Now, He is the maintainer of... Whatever we are enjoying, it is due to His mercy. In the Kathopanisad, er, Mandukyopanisad, it is stated, nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam, eko bahunam vidadhati kaman (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). Now, He is the supplier whatever we want. So as palana-karta, as the maintainer, as the Supersoul, He is supplying. He is supplying whatever you want: "All right." So we should not approach God as supplying agent. That is the lowest stage. He is supplying even to the cats and dogs. Then what is the difference between human being and the cats and dogs? Just like a small child, he is supplied all necessities by the father, but when the child is grown, he wants to serve the father, similarly, to make God as order-supplier, "O God, give us this. Give us that..." God is giving. You ask or not ask, He will give you because, after all, you are all children. So He takes care of His children. But you may say that "Why the childrens are differently treated? Somebody is supplied sumptuously, and somebody is not. Why this difference of treatment?" That difference of treatment is also for good. How? Just like a mother has got five children. One of them is suffering from fever, is ill. Now, very nice foodstuff is prepared. All the children come, and mother is supplying. And when the feverish child comes, "Oh, you don't sit here. You cannot take." "Why?" "Oh, you are diseased. You cannot take." Do you think that mother is partial to this child and that child? No. Anyone who is not supplied as he wants, that is due to his own disease, chronic. So if God does not supply him sufficiently, it is good for him. Therefore, in spiritual advancement a poor man is in more advantage because he can think of God. Provided he is virtuous, he will think of God. Catur-vidha bhajante mam sukrtino 'rjuna.

So this supplying, God is supplying. Eko bahunam vidadhati kaman. That one... There are two living entities, one Supreme and others; one singular number, other plural number. We are amongst the plural number, nityo nityanam. Nityanam, this is plural number, "Amongst many eternals." So we are amongst the many eternals. We are also eternal. We have got that qualitative, I mean to say, thing. Eternity is the same quality as of God, as of ours. We are eternal; God is eternal. That's all. But we are amongst the plural number. Nityo nityanam. And He is the singular number. And it is particularly stated that eko, that singular number, eternal purusa, He is supplying everyone's necessities. So God is supplying everyone's necessities. Either you are cat or dog or demigod or President Johnson or anyone, everyone is dependent on God's supply. We cannot be independent. If God stops supplying, you cannot manufacture. If there is food grains, there is no food grain, you cannot chew your dollar notes. What you will do (with) your hundred dollar notes? So He is the supplier. Eko bahunam vidadhati kaman.

So we should be... This is knowledge of God. We should be in love of God, means "Oh, God has supplied us so many things." Why not? Therefore pure devotees, they like to supply God. They want to become order-supplier of God, not to make God as order-supplier. What God wants? God wants that make everyone God conscious, Krsna conscious. He sends His son. He sends His books. He comes Himself. That is His mission. He wants that all these suffering living entities, they should become Krsna conscious and be happy. God wants it. In the Bhagavad-gita it is clearly stated. So if you wants to supply the want of God, God wants it. If you become yourself Krsna conscious and try to serve God by spreading this mission all over the world, that is the best service. That is the best service to Lord, to become yourself a field worker, field worker. God is very much anxious to get back His, these mad sons. In this material world everyone is mad, crazy. It is a difference of degrees only. I may be more crazy than yourself, but we are all crazies. And as soon as we are fixed up in Krsna consciousness, our craziness is vanished. Yes. That is our constitutional position. The part is to serve the whole. We are part and parcel. So this is a chance. This manifestation of this material world is a chance to have that opportunity. And especially this human form of life is a, the boon for understanding this Krsna consciousness. If we miss this opportunity, then we are unfortunate. Unfortunate.

purusavatarera ei kailun nirupana
lilavatara ebe suna, sanatana

Now I described about the three purusa incarnations. What is that? Maha-Visnu... Yes. Karanarnavasayi Visnu, or Maha-Visnu; then Garbhodakasayi, or Hiranyagarbha; Ksirodakasayi or the Supersoul, antaryami. The three Visnu incarnation description is finished. Now He is trying to explain lilavatara, pastimes. God has got all propensities. So if He wants to fulfill some propensity, then He comes here to exhibit, to manifest that. Just like God comes here, just Ramacandra, Lord Ramacandra. And what was the main function of Lord Ramacandra? He fought with Ravana, His enemy. So this is called lila. What is that lila, lila pastime? When God wants to have some desire to fulfill, that "I should fight..." Sometimes you sometimes feel mock fighting with friends or with your children. Similarly, wherefrom this desire comes unless the desire is in God? Because He is the origin of all, everything. So don't you feel sometimes, mock fighting? That is enjoyment, fighting with friends, boxing. That is not fighting. That is enjoyment. Similarly, God wants to enjoy by fighting. So Vaikuntha, there is no fighting because nobody can be found there enemy. Everyone is obedient servant. Therefore He comes here to find out some enemy. The two functions are served. Paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam [Bg. 4.8]. He satisfies His fighting spirit; at the same time, He protects the devotees and protects that enemy also by killing him. Because when a demon is killed by the Supreme Lord, he is at once liberated. The liberation which he had to achieve after many, many births, he at once achieves. That is the advantage. So He saves the enemy and saves the devotee, and at the same time, He satisfies His fighting desire. So God is good. So any fight, that is also good. It is not that Krsna is inducing, inciting Arjuna, fight. There is a plan, big plan. So foolish people who criticize, "Oh, Krsna is inciting war. We are very good men, nonviolence." So this "good man" has no value. That fighting has much value. But there is a plan, good plan. So this is called pastime, lila, lilavatara.

So what are the lilavatara? Lord Caitanya says, lilavatara krsnera na yaya ganana: "How many number of lilavataras are there, nobody can count." God is unlimited, so anything manifested by Him is unlimited. That cannot be calculated by us. So there are so many lilavatara. Pradhana kariya kahi dig-darasana: "Some of them I am just mentioning." Nobody can fully calculate or understand how many lilavataras are there and where it is going and how it is going on. But it is going on. The same example, that the sun is always in the sky. Now, where it is, that you have to find out. But sun is always in the sky. Similarly, the lilavatara is always there. Just like Krsna. In this planet Krsna is not present, but in some of the universe He is present. His avatara is going on, is going on. In every minute, every second, He is taking His birth and He is fighting in the Kuruksetra. That is called nitya-lila, eternal. His everything eternal. He is eternal; whatever He does, that is also eternal. And because we are conditioned, we cannot understand His eternity, His unlimitedness. But He's unlimited; His everything is unlimited.

So Lord Caitanya confirms that how many lilavataras, incarnations, are there. We want to everything make limited because we are all limited sense, limited understanding, limited... Everything is limited, and God is unlimited. That we do not understand. We try to understand God with our limited means. That is our folly. Therefore we don't believe. "Oh, God is doing like that? Oh, God is lifting hill? How it is possible? This is story." How? Why it is story? God is omnipotent, and God cannot lift a hill? He is floating so many planets in the air, weightlessness, and He cannot lift a hill? Because I do not believe He is God. Avajananti mam mudha: [Bg. 9.11] "Foolish rascals, they consider Me as ordinary man: 'Not Krsna, but me. You offer your respect to me. I am God. I am competitor Krsna.' " So these are foolishness. He is unlimited; His everything, He is unlimited.

Now Lord Caitanya (is) mentioning some of these main features of these lilavatara.

matsya, kurma, raghunatha, nrsimha, vamana,
varahadi-lekha yanra na yaya ganana

Some of the principal avataras, they are mentioned. Matsyavatara. During Vaivasvata Manu there was devastation, and in that devastation, Lord took Matsyavatara, incarnation of fish, and He protected the Vedas.

pralaya-payodhi-jale dhrtavan asi vedam
vihita-vahitra-caritram akhedam
kesava dhrta-mina-sarira jaya jagadisa hare

The poet Jayadeva, a great devotee poet, is singing that "In the devastation, my Lord Kesava, You have assumed the form of fish." A great muni was sitting. He was meditating. And after taking his bath in the ocean, in the sea, he brought one pot of kamandalu. Kamandalu, that pot, you have seen. He found a little fish there. Then, within few seconds, that fish covered all the pot, and the muni thought, "Oh, He is growing so rapidly. All right, let Him have some big pot." So he gave Him big pot. Then again He became full. Then in this way he had to put it in the ocean, and He became oceanlike. Then he understood that He is God. So this is Godly power. He can take the shape... As the ocean is big, so He'll take and take this bigger-than-the-ocean form. But He is the maker of all forms. He has made ocean. But is it very difficult to understand how God becomes fish? That does not mean that every fish is God. No. So there is Matsyavatara.

pralaya-payodhi-jale dhrtavan asi vedam
vihita-vahitra-caritram akhedam **

Similarly, He took the incarnation of tortoise, Kurma. There was a churning of the ocean, and the churning rod must be rested on something solid. So He became the churning rod, resting. And the hill, Mandara Hill, was placed, and He was feeling some itching sensation. So it was nicely itched by churning rod. So this is... He is Kurmavatara. Then Raghunatha. Raghunatha. Raghunatha, this Rama, Lord Rama, He came to kill that dasanana, who had ten faces. Vitarasi diksu rane dik-pati-kamaniyam. So in this way there are innumerable incarnation of pastime. Nrsimha. Nrsimha.

tava kara-kamala-vare nakham adbhuta-srngam
dalita-hiranyakasipu-tanu-bhrngam
kesava dhrta-narahari-rupa jaya jagadisa hare

Nrsimha. Nrsimha means half-lion and half-man, and this shape was assumed by the Lord to kill Hiranyakasipu, the father of Prahlada. Prahlada was a great devotee of Lord, and his only fault was that he was a great devotee. His father wanted to kill him. So it is very dangerous also to become devotee. Even the father will be prepared to kill you. You see? The mother will be prepared to kill you. And what to speak of others, complaining, "O Swamiji, you are disturbing our sleep."

So although we have made our friendship with Krsna and He will always protect us, but at the same time this devotional line is risky also, that we create so many enemies. There are many examples in the history of this devotional service that unnecessarily people become enemy to these innocent devotees. Even a innocent boy like Prahlada Maharaja, five years old. But a devotee cannot give up his profession. You see? He was being chastised so many times by his atheistic father, but what Prahlada Maharaja was doing? Oh, because he was king, he ordered the teachers that "This boy is coming home and chanting Hare Krsna. What is this nonsense?" Teachers were asked. Teachers said, "My dear sir, we do not teach Hare Krsna. According to your regulation, we are secular. (laughter) There is no possibility of teaching God or God's name. This boy, I do not know wherefrom he has got this Hare Krsna." (laughter) Oh, he became very angry: "Where you have got your Hare Krsna?" "Father, from where you have got your anger, I have got that Hare Krsna. (laughter) He is the supplier. You want to be angry; He supplies anger. And I want to chant." Oh, he becomes more angry. So, but that boy, what he was doing? That teacher was forbidden, secular, and the father was enemy. Still, he was taking some opportunity as soon as the teacher is out: "O my dear friends, come on. I shall speak to you Hare Krsna and the science." So this should be our, your policy. Whenever there is some chance, just preach this, whenever there is chance. But you should always know that you will find enemies, but you don't be afraid. Go on with your work.

So Prahlada Maharaja, he was such a nice devotee. And to protect him when he was just going to be killed by his father... And his father was very good politician. He took benediction from Brahma that he will not be killed by anyone. Means by policy he took benediction from Brahma that "I shall not be killed by man." "Oh, yes." "I shall not be killed by demigods." "That's all right." "I shall not be killed by any animal." "That's all right." "I shall not be killed in day." "That's all right." "I shall not be killed at night." "That's all right." "I shall not be killed by any weapon." "That's all right." And he said, "Now it is finished. Everything is now secure. I cannot be killed in day. I cannot be killed at night. No man can kill him (me). No demigod can kill me. No animal can kill me. Then where is the killing? Everything finished." But God is so cunning that He assumed neither man nor animal, and no weapons. He killed him with the nails. He never expected that "I will be killed by the nails." This is the definition by negation, defective definition. In argument, if you define negatively, "This is not this. This is not this. This is not this," then something will come that will nullify all your arguments. So he protected himself in all negative ways: "This will not. This will not. This will not. This will not." Something came which was not in his power. So this Nrsimhavatara.

Then Vamanavatara. Vamanavatara, I have already mentioned, that He became a dwarf brahmana boy and took all the possession that Maharaja Bali. This Maharaja Bali was grandson of this Maharaja Prahlada. So these are lilavatara pastimes. Pastimes means exchange of dealing between the devotees and the Lord, between the living entities and the Lord, exchange. Either there are twelve kinds of humor, rasas... Sometimes He deals as enemy; sometimes He deals as friend; sometimes He deals as so many things. There are twelve. So we are all related with God in some humor out of these twelve, either as enemy or as friend or servitor or lover or as son or father, as the master and servant. In so many ways we are related. And when these relationship is exchanged between God and the living entity, that is called lila, lila, pastimes. So lilavatara. We shall explain again to...

Thank you very much. Any question? (end)

Nitai: "Material consciousness is the cause of one's conditional life. Conditions are enforced upon the living entity by the material energy. Although he does not do anything and is transcendental to such activities, the spirit soul is thus affected by conditional life."

Prabhupada:

 [SB 3.26.7]

So karmasu kriyamanesu gunair atmani manyate. The conditioned soul... We say "conditioned." It was not conditioned, but now it has become conditioned, para-tantrya.

krsna bhuli' sei jiva anadi-bahirmukha
ataeva maya tare deya samsara-duhkha
  [Cc. Madhya 20.117]

This is a statement in the Caitanya-caritamrta. Krsna bhuliya, forgetting Krsna, jiva, the living entity, anadi-bahirmukha... Anadi... Adi means the beginning of the creation, and anadi means before the creation. Anadi. Nobody knows when it has began. The creation... There are many creations. Bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19]. Just like this body: it is created, everyone knows. It is created by the father and mother. And it will be annihilated in due course of time by nature's way. Similarly, anything material... This whole universe, cosmic manifestation, is also created. This is a bigger body, that's all, virat  body. And it stays for millions and millions of years during the lifetime of Brahma. We have got information, Brahma's one day: sahasra-yuga-paryantam ahar yad brahmano viduh [Bg. 8.17]. We cannot calculate even one Brahma's day. Such one day means daytime, twelve hours; then night, twelve hours. In this one day, such month, such year, such hundred years, Brahma lives. So this cosmic manifestation, brahmanda, universe, will stay up to that time. So there is no difference in the manipulation with this body and the Brahma. It is the same principle. Bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19]. So this is samsrtih, anadi-bahirmukha.

So this creation... Not only this creation... We are in this material world, maybe. "Maybe" not; it is a fact that we have been in many other creations. Therefore our this forgetfulness of Krsna is called anadi. Anadi means before creation. This creation is going on. Before that, there was another creation. The same thing was going on. Now, this is called samsrtih, samsara, samsara-bandhana, bound up by samsrtih. Anadi karama-phale, padi' bhavarnava-jale. Bhaktivinoda Thakura sings, "On account of my fruitive result before the beginning of the creation, I am now in this material ocean." Anadi karma-phale, padi' bhavarnava-jale taribare na dekhi upay: "I do not find any means how to get out of it." This is knowledge. When one becomes very anxious, very serious to get out of this samsrtih, continually going on, birth and death, birth and death, birth... People have no knowledge. So tad asya samsrtir bandhah. This is bondage.

The previous verse, it has been described,

evam parabhidhyanena
kartrtvam prakrteh puman
karmasu kriyamanesu
gunair atmani manyate

Dictated by the material nature, we are acting in some way and thereby creating another resultant action, means another body. In this way it is going on. That is called samsrtih. Tad asya samsrtir bandhah para-tantryam. Svatantrya, and just the opposite word is para-tantrya, under the direction of somebody else, para-tantrya. Just like dog and the master. The dog is para-tantrya, dependent on the master. Similarly, we are now dogs of material nature, para-tantrya. We cannot go beyond the rules and regulation, condition, of material nature. That is called para-tantrya, not svatantrya. Just like they are trying to go to the moon planet, but because they are under condition of material nature, not that they can go very easily. It is not possible. They are coming back again and again trying to go there. This is also material world. Even in this material world we are so much dependent on the rules and regulation of the nature. And what to speak of going to the spiritual world? Para-tantrya is there. We admit or not admit. We are not svatantrya, or independent. We are dependent. Bhavaty akartur isasya saksino nirvrtatmanah.

So we are conditioned soul, but the Supersoul... The Mayavadi philosophers, they do not admit the existence of Supersoul. They think there is one soul. We are... They speak of our conditioned life as lila. This is not very good philosophy. One has got the body of a hog, and he is eating stool, and the Mayavadi philosopher says that it is lila. God is eating stool; it is lila. Just see the philosophy! Because we say krsna-lila... Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He is dancing with the gopis or playing with the cowherds boy or becoming the child of mother Yasoda. We say it is lila. The Mayavadi philosopher says... Because they do not two, make two. Their philosophy is one. So the pig or the hog eating the stool, they say it is also lila. Krsna is dancing with the gopis, that is also lila, and because they do not make two, therefore... We cannot say, of course. They say that God is also, has become pig and they, eating stool, that is also lila. This is the grossest offense on the feet of the Lord, to bring Him to the status of ordinary living being who is not independent. Dependent, it is clearly said. Therefore they manufacture these words, "daridra-narayana," "this Narayana," "that Narayana," because they do not make any difference between Narayana and the ordinary living entity. This is their philosophy.

But that is not the fact. Here it is said, tad asya samsrtir bandhah para-tantryam ca tat-krtam. Para-tantrya, under the grip of the laws of material nature. How God can be under the grip of material nature? They explain, "It is lila." But that is not. Here it is said, para-tantrya: "He is forced to accept a certain type of body." That is called para-tantrya. Samsrtih. This is punishment, samsrtih. Why samsrtih? On account of... (aside:) What is that? Sit down. Samsrtih. Samsrtih means punishment. Samyak rupena srtih, going, progress, one after another, one after another, one after another, samsrtih, samsara. So samsara is not very palatable thing. Our Vaisnava acaryas say that samsara is just like blazing fire. It is not a very nice... Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita, duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15]. So does it mean that the Supreme Lord, the Absolute Personality of Godhead, He has come to suffer? And by force everyone in this material world is suffering samsrtih, and he is the Supreme Personality of Godhead? How wrong philosophy it is. No.

In the Bhagavad-gita, in the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is not possible to make the one. No. Krsna says, mamaivamso jiva-bhutah: [Bg. 15.7] "Jiva is My amsa, part, particle, very small particle." And Krsna, or the Supreme Lord, He is vibhu. We have discussed all this. Vibhu, greater than the greatest, and smaller than the smallest. The smaller than the smallest... Anor aniyan mahato mahiyan. Mahato mahiyan is the Supreme Lord, and we are anu, very small particle, although we are the same expansion of the Supreme. But both, we are individual, not that today we are differentiated, and when we are liberated, we become one. No. That is not. Mamaivamso jiva-bhutah jiva-loke sanatanah [Bg. 15.7]. Sanatanah means eternally we are vibhinnamsa.

So our this para-tantrya, dependence on material nature, is para-tantryam ca tat-krtam. Tat-krtam. And we wanted this separation. Therefore it is our conditioned life here. That is our selection. Krsna-bahirmukha hana bhoga vancha kare. When we wanted to enjoy life independently, so-called ind..., because we cannot be independent... We have to become dependent. Either this material nature or the spiritual nature, it is not possible. Therefore in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah [Bg. 9.13]. You have to take asraya, shelter, of either of the prakrtis, para-prakrti or apara-prakrti. Apara-prakrti is this material nature, and para-prakrti is the spiritual nature. So therefore jiva-sakti is called tatastha. Tatastha. Antaranga, bahiranga, tatastha. Parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport], the Absolute Truth has got multi-potencies. They have been summarized into three. First is para-prakrti, spiritual nature, and then the material nature, and another nature, prakrti -- we are also prakrti -- between the two, tatastha. Just like the beach is between the land and water. Beach is sometimes covered with water, and sometimes it is uncovered; the water is far away. When it is not covered, we call it beach, and it is covered, we call it sea. So similarly, our position is like that, living entities. Although by nature we are para-prakrti, spirit, spirit, but because we have got the tendency to enjoy material nature, therefore we come to this material nature. Therefore our position is in between the spiritual nature and the material nature, tatastha. Tatastha means in between.

So because we have selected this para-tantrya, to be conditioned by the material nature, in any condition we are dependent, either dependent on spiritual nature or on material nature. So if we prefer to be under the control of material nature, then it is duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15]. And if we are under spiritual nature, then... Asango 'yam purusah. Raso vai sah, labdhanandi. Then we get blissful life, eternal blissful life. That is our selection. Either you be under spiritual nature or you be under material nature. That we have got, little independence, as you like. Ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham [Bg. 4.11]. Krsna said. Krsna is very kind. If you want to remain in the material nature and enjoy so-called material sense gratification, then you can have it.

In the Bhagavad-gita it is explained,

yanti deva-vrata devan
pitrn yanti pitr-vratah
bhutani yanti bhutejya
yanti mad-yajino 'pi mam
 [Bg. 9.25]

If you want to remain in this material world, bhutejya, worshiper of the material energy... Just like we are at present engaged: we are worshiper of the material energy, or Durga. Worshiper of the material energy. In the Durga-puja, in the Candi, the direction is that you ask material opulence, dhanam dehi, rupam dehi, rupavati-bharyam dehi, yaso dehi. That you can do. And we all living entities within this material world, we are worshiper of the material nature. The scientist also trying to find out means how to exploit the resources of material nature. That is also one kind of worshiping. Because if they are successful in discovering some material energy, new kind of material energy, they get money. Then, by money, they get full advantage of sense gratification. So this is called conditioned life, conditioned by the material..., illusioned by the material... They are trying, discover material advances, and becoming happy by such advancement. This is called material life. This is para-tantrya. This is not svatantrya. Para-tantrya. Although constitutionally the living entity is svatantrya, asango 'yam purusah, but because we accepted to be satisfied under the control of material nature, that is called para-tantrya, and that is called samsrtih. Samsrtih means continuously repetition of birth, death, old age, and disease. That is called samsara.

Therefore Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura, he says, samsara-davanala-lidha-loka **. This samsrtih, this repetition of birth and death and different standard of material happiness... Everybody has got some material happiness. The man has got a standard of material happiness. The dog has got a standard of material happiness. The demigods, they have got a standard of material happiness. Everyone has got. So... But actually, it is not happiness. It is simply miserable condition. And because we do not appreciate this miserable condition, we still think that we are happy. That is called maya, illusion. This is called samsrtih. Although we are in a miserable condition, continually, every moment, every second... This place is like that. Krsna says, not that we are saying. Krsna says, duhkhalayam. Continually you have to suffer. But we are, we have become so much habituated in this suffering, we do not accept it as suffering. We take it as very pleasing, because we have no idea what is actually happiness. Sukham atyantikam yat tad atindriyam grahyam [Bg. 6.21]. Real happiness, what is real happiness? Sukham yat. Then what is sukham? That is not to be appreciated by these material senses. Sukham atyantikam. Atyantikam means supreme. This is not... Whatever so-called happiness we derive in this material world, that is dependent on so many conditions. That is not atyantikam. Atyantikam means the supreme happiness. That is different from this material happiness, but we have no information or taste because we have been conditioned for many many creation, anadi. Just like a man suffering from disease from many, many years. He becomes accustomed. He does not take any more that this suffering is suffering. He thinks this is natural.

So we have been accustomed to this habit of material disadvantages. We have no information of spiritual life. Therefore sastra says that we should try... This life, human life, is not meant for suffering but to make endeavor to end suffering. That is human life. Human life is not meant for suffering like the animals. Just like the life of pig. Is that very good life? Whole day and night they are searching after stool, "Where is stool? Where is stool?" because that is their enjoyment. Actually, if you give a pig halava and, side by side, stool, he would prefer to accept the stool than the halava because he is habituated to that kind of food. Therefore Rsabhadeva says that human life... He was instructing to His sons, "My dear sons, don't be like pigs. You just become like human being." Nayam deho deha-bhajam nrloke kastan kaman arhate vid-bhujam ye: [SB 5.5.1] "My dear sons, don't try to get happiness like the pigs, dogs, hogs." Kastan kaman. With hard labor, you get some food, and then you enjoy sex life. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham [SB 7.9.45]. Material life means to work very hard day and night and get some money and then eat sumptuously. Eat, drink, be merry and then enjoy sex life. That's all. So Rsabhadeva said, "My dear sons, this kind of standard of life is available in the life of pigs." Kastan kaman arhate ye vid-bhujam. Vid-bhujam means stool-eaters.

Then what is human life? If this is not life, then what is real life? That, He recommends, tapo divyam putraka yena suddhyet sattvam [SB 5.5.1]. Sattva, your sattva, your existence, is now impure. It is covered by this material nature; therefore it is impure. So you have to purify. That is real life. And to purify means tapasya. Tapo divyam [SB 5.5.1]. Tapasa brahmacaryena [SB 6.1.13]. That is the way. That is Vedic civilization. That is Vedic civilization, or you may call Indian civilization or Hindu civilization. Actually, it is Vedic civilization. Therefore you will find in India, in the history of India, Mahabharata, greater India, that many people, they are engaged in tapasya. A part of life must be engaged for tapasya. The Bharata Maharaja, Bharata Maharaja, under whose name this planet is called Bharatavarsa... So you will find in the Fifth Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam his life. He enjoyed his kingdom, then voluntarily he left. After the end of his material way of life, he divided the property to his sons and left. And he was living alone at Pulahasrama near Haridwar, and undergoing severe tapasya. That is human life, to accept tapasya. Tapo divyam putraka yena suddhyet sattvam yasmad brahma-saukhyam anantam [SB 5.5.1]. You are searching after happiness, but why don't you see that in this material life your happiness is conditioned? That is not easily going or flowing. There are so many conditions. If you have to become a millionaire, before becoming millionaire there are so many condition. So this is not happiness, after going through so many conditions, and which we get, that is also not for good.
So to come to the so-called conditional happiness we have to undergo so many difficulties, and when we come to that position... Suppose after working very, very hard I get one millions dollars, so I will not be allowed to enjoy this one million dollar for all the days. Asasvatam. Duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15]. Krsna says that this place is full of miseries. To get that one million dollar you have to undergo so many miserable condition of life. And even if you get it... Perhaps you may not get it. Everyone is trying, but they cannot. Everyone is not getting. Who is destined to get, he will get it, not that everyone, because he, one is trying very hard, it is guaranteed that he will get one millions dollars. That is not possible. That one who is to get by destiny... This is the sastra. Actually, this is the fact.

Therefore Vedic civilization does not recommend that you waste your valuable life simply for so-called happiness or economic..., improvement of economic condition. Because it is not possible that everyone trying for improving economic condition and everyone is becoming millionaire. No. That is not possible. You cannot get more or less what you are destined to get. Otherwise everyone would have been millionaires -- everyone. In Bombay there are so many. People are trying, working very hard day and night. Still, somebody is living in a very nice, palatial building and somebody is living in the Jappara, or what is that? Most abominable condition. In Bombay city. Why? Because one is destined.

Therefore sastra says that don't bother about these thing. Tasyaiva hetoh prayateta kovido na labhyate yad bhramatam upary adhah [SB 1.5.18]. For that reason, one should work, which is not obtainable by wandering, bhramatam upary adhah. Upary adhah. What is that? That thing is that purifying your existence. Tasyaiva hetoh, for that reason. Purifying means, as we have discussed many slokas, we are now covered by this material nature, sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna, and our endeavor should be how to purify. Tapo divyam. Tapo divyam putraka yena suddhyet sattvam [SB 5.5.1]. Just to purify our existence. And as soon as we purify our existence, yasmad brahma-saukhyam anantam. Brahma-sukha. Brahman means the largest or eternal. Here the sukha, or happiness, is not brahma-sukha; that is material sukha. Therefore, in another place it is said, ramante yoginah anante [Cc. Madhya 9.29]. The yogis, those who are yogis... Yogi especially means bhakta-yogi. They also enjoy. Ramante yoginah anante. That is unlimited enjoyment, without any stoppage. Anandambudhi-vardhanam. Simply increasing, increasing. There is no decrease. That is called ananta. It is increasing. Just like Krsna. Krsna and the gopis, they are also in pleasure. Gopis are expansion of Krsna's pleasure potency. So they are increasing their pleasure. There is no decrease. In the material world there is no question of increasing; it is decreased. That is the difference.

Therefore, those who are yogis, they are also enjoying. Ramante yoginah anante satyanande. That is real happiness which increases. Which decreases, that is not real happiness. That is illusion. Ramante yoginah anante satyanande cid-atmani. Cit, that is spiritual, spiritual ananda. Really we want ananda, happiness, blissfulness. That is our natural instinct. Anandamayo 'bhyasat (Vedanta-sutra 1.1.12). So... But we are searching after ananda in this material world, and that is described here that samsrtir bandhah para-tantrya, under material condition and changing this body one after another. This is not ananda. Satyanande cid-atmani. Ananda is available on the spiritual platform. Satyanande cid-atmani. Ramante... Iti rama-padenasau param brahma abhidhiyate. Therefore the yogis, they enjoy, ramana, in the spiritual world. That ananda is called Rama, Hare Rama. Hare Krsna. Krsna is also attractive, and Rama is enjoyment. So when we dovetail our activities with Rama and Krsna, then our life becomes happy. Before that there is samsrtih.

Therefore in order to understand the science, one has to go... That is the Vedic injunction, tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet: [MU 1.2.12] "One should approach a proper bona fide spiritual master." And the spiritual master will save him from this blazing fire of repetition of birth and death. Therefore Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura sings,

samsara-davanala-lidha-loka-
tranaya karunya-ghanaghanatvam
praptasya kalyana-gunarnavasya
vande guroh sri-caranaravindam **

It is the business of the guru to deliver this disciple, sisya, from this blazing fire of samsara, samsrti, bandha, conditioned life, to save him from that position and give him the eternal happiness, brahma-saukhyam anantam [SB 5.5.1].

Thank you very much. (end)

Aural Concentration

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.15.41

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Pradyumna: "Then he amalgamated all the sense organs into the mind, then the mind into life, life into breathing, his total existence into the embodiment of the five elements, and his body into death. Then, as pure self, he became free from the material conception of life."

Prabhupada: Read the purport also.

Pradyumna: "Maharaja Yudhisthira, like his brother Arjuna, began to concentrate and gradually became freed from all material bondage. First of all he concentrated all the actions of the senses amalgamated in the mind. Or in other words, he turned his mind towards transcendental service of the Lord. He prayed that since all material activities were performed by the mind in terms of actions and reactions of the material senses, and since he was going back to Godhead, the mind would wind up its material activities and return towards the transcendental service of the Lord. There was no longer need for material activities. Actually, the activities of the mind cannot be stopped because they are the reflection of the eternal soul. But the quality of the activities can be changed from matter to the transcendental service of the Lord. The material color of the mind is changed by washing it from contaminations of life breathing and therefore getting it freed from the contamination of repeated birth and death and getting it situated in pure spiritual life. All was manifested by the temporary embodiment of the material body, which is a production of mind at the time of death. And if the mind is purified by practice of transcendental loving service of the Lord and the same is constantly engaged in the service of the lotus feet of the Lord, there is no more chance of the mind's producing another material body after death. It will be freed from the absorption of material contamination. The pure soul will be able to return back home, back to Godhead."

Prabhupada: So this verse describes in the manner of yogic practice. The yogic practice means controlling five kinds of air within the body: prana, apana, vyana, like that. That is breathing exercise, yoga practice.

So it appears that Maharaja Yudhisthira knew how to practice the yoga. Not only Maharaja Yudhisthira, practically any high-class man, especially the brahmanas and the ksatriyas, every one of them knew this practice, yoga practice. So at the time of death they could utilize, how to give up this body. That is perfection of yoga. The yogis, they can give up the life or give this, relinquish this body, according to his own desire, not compelled by the material condition. That is yoga system. Generally, a man dies under the obligation of material laws. But a yogi, he controls in such a way that he leaves the body...

Just like Bhismadeva. Bhismadeva especially, his father gave him the benediction that so long he would not himself like to die, he'll never die, Bhismadeva. He got this benediction from his father because his promise was very stern, severe. You know the story, that Bhismadeva's father was captivated by the young girl, Satyavati, and he wanted to marry her. A ksatriya could do that. But Satyavati's father disagreed. Although he was king, he could marry anyone he likes. But his (her) father... Still, with the permission of the parents. So the father denied, "No, no, I cannot give you my daughter to you." "Why?" "Because you have got grown-up son, and he will be the king. Why my daughter shall be married with you just like a maid-servant? No." So Bhismadeva could understand that "My father desires to marry this young girl, Satyavati, and there is some hindrances." So he approached, that "Why don't you give my father your daughter?" So he said, "Because you are his eldest son. You will become king." So he immediately promised that "No, your daughter's son will become king. I will not become king. Give my father, sir." So he said, "No, no, still it is not possible." "Why?" "Because you may not become king. Then your son will become king. I don't want that." So in this way Bhismadeva said, "No, then I shall not marry. Is that all right? Still..." Then he gave his daughter, "Yes." Satyavati.

So his father, Santanu Maharaja, saw that Bhisma is so affectionate to his father that for the father's sense gratification he has sacrificed his own. So he gave him this benediction, "My dear son, you are so stern in keeping your promise. So I give you this benediction, that you will never die unless you desire." Therefore Bhismadeva was lying on the bed of arrows, and he left this material world when he desired. So the yogis can do that. The yogis they control the soul. The soul is floating in different airs. So they can control. That is called sat-cakrah. From the rectum to the abdomen, abdomen to the heart, heart to the collarbone, then collarbone to the palate, and then here. So one who can bring the soul here, they can get out from this hole, it is called brahma-randhra.

So they can go, the yogis, as they desire. Either he can go directly to the spiritual world, or if he likes, he can transfer himself to the higher planetary system. This is yoga practice. Anywhere he likes, he can go. It appears that Yudhisthira Maharaja knew perfectly well. Similarly, we see from many other kings' life. Or this yoga practice was done by any gentleman. Therefore they were so sober, steady and determined. Everyone was a yogi. Therefore in the Bhagavad-gita it is described, rajarsi. Imam rajarsayo viduh. Rsi. Rsi, saintly persons, they know how to practice yoga. So formerly the kings were as good as rsis. They were simply sitting on the throne as a matter of responsibility to the citizens. They were not political opportunists. No. Nowadays people are political opportunists. As soon as they get some opportunity, they capture the power. Formerly... Just like Bhismadeva. Actually, he would have been the king. But he was not opportunist. To serve his father he gave up everything. This is called rajarsi.

So vacamsi. If you can control your mind, then you can control your words. There are kaya, mana, vakya. Three things are... We have got this body, and we have got our mind, and we have got to talk. Talking is very important. You can talk nonsense all day and night, and you can talk about Krsna and chant Hare Krsna mantra, and the same thing, vibration. So if you talk nonsense, then you can go to hell. And if you talk about Krsna and the Hare Krsna mantra, chant, then you go back to home, back to Godhead. Just see how much this talking is important. Simply by talking. Vacamsi vaikuntha-gunanuvarnane. So it is a matter of control. This is con... Yoga means indriya-samyama, controlling the senses. That is called yoga, real purpose of yoga. Because our senses are just like venomous serpents. So many people, they fall down on account of these senses. They become victims of the senses.

So yoga practice means the controlling the senses. This is the real purpose of yoga. There is certain mechanical process, that is called yoga practice. Therefore yoga practice is meant for a person who is too much in bodily concept of life. Otherwise, one who is convinced that "I am not this body," then where is the necessity of exercising the body? But it is meant for a person who is too much absorbed in bodily concept of life. For him, this yogic practice is recommended, that by mechanical practice of the different parts of the body, the air within the body, one can control the senses. And unless the senses are controlled... The whole thing is sense. Therefore consciousness, it depends on the senses, purifying the senses. Spirit soul is eternal, so his senses are eternal. You cannot stop the activities of his senses. That is not possible. Just like others. They think that "If we stop... " Just like Visvamitra Muni. He was a great yogi. He stopped the senses. He wanted to stop. He closed the eyes, "I'll not see a beautiful woman." But he failed as soon as he heard the tinkling sound of the bangles of the apsara, Menaka.

So our senses are so strong. If you stop this sense, the other sense is prepared to kill you. Because they are called enemies, they are manah sasthanindriyani prakrti-sthani karsati [Bg. 15.7]. We are struggling for existence with the mind and the senses. Otherwise it is explained in the Bhagavad-gita, "These living entities, they are My part and parcel." That means "They are as good as I am." Why they are rotting in this material world? Because on account of the mind and the senses. So yoga practice you have to control first of all the mind, and then you have to control the senses. That is perfection of yoga. So Ambarisa Maharaja, a great devotee, he controlled his mind, senses, in this way. The first thing is to... Sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayoh. This yoga practice... Bhakti-yoga means this, not to try artificially to control the mind the senses. That will be failure. In most cases they are failure. In some cases they are perfect or successful, but in most cases they are failure, especially in this age, when people have no training, no..., simply extravagant, doing everywhere what he likes, no brahmacari system. Nothing is taught. Formerly (in) the Vedic civilization, the boys should be sent to Gurukula for practicing brahmacarya. There is no such question now. So the so-called practice of yoga is simply useless waste of time. They cannot do anything. It is not possible.

Therefore bhakti-yoga system is to engage the senses and the mind in Krsna's service. If your mind is engaged in Krsna's service, then there is very little scope for the mind being diverted from it. It diverts, but if you practice, then Krsna will help you.

srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah
punya-sravana-kirtanah
hrdy antah-stho hy abhadrani
vidhunoti suhrt satam
 [SB 1.2.17]

Krsna is within yourself, and if you are sincerely trying to purify yourself, your mind, body, words, these three...

So the beginning is to hear about Krsna. Anything about Krsna. But first thing we want to hear... If we want to know Krsna, naturally we are inclined, "What is Krsna? What is Krsna?" Just like our Krsna book is now selling. Because the Krsna consciousness movement is there, so people are, I mean to say, eager to know, "What this Krsna is?" Naturally they want to purchase some Krsna books. Actually, that is the first business. Just like we are speaking about, "In God We Trust," this slogan of the American people or American government. So naturally, people should be inquisitive to know actually what is God, scientifically. We say, "In God We Trust," but we do not know what is God. Then where is the question of trust? Suppose if you, if somebody, friends, say that "You can trust the Bank of America." But if he does not know what is Bank of America, then how he can trust? How he can deposit his money? So that is the difficulty. This is simply slogan. Otherwise, everyone should have been inquisitive, "What this government has made this slogan, ‘In God We Trust'?" What is God? Nobody knows. Then where is the question of trust? Therefore it has become everything humbug.

But if you are serious to know about God, there is science, there is teacher, everything is there. God Himself is there within your heart. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. So actually, if you are serious to know God, so God is within himself. He can understand, "Now this living entity is serious to know about Me." So He will help you, immediately. That is stated in Bhagavad-gita,

tesam satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te
 [Bg. 10.10]

Tesam, "such persons," satata-yuktanam, "always very much anxious to know about God..." So God can understand. God is omnipotent. He can understand that "This living entity is now serious. He wants to hear about God." So this inquisitiveness is very good. My Guru Maharaja accepted me as a disciple because he saw in the beginning I was very inquisitive to hear him. So in the beginning, when many gentleman... I was one of them, was introduced to my Guru Maharaja, that "They are to be initiated. They want to be initiated, to become your disciple." So when my turn came, he immediately said, "Yes, I will accept this boy as disciple because he is very inquisitive to hear." That was my recommendation. And actually, I was very inquisitive. I could not follow what Guru Maharaja was speaking, but still, I was asking others, that "When Guru Maharaja will speak? I will hear." I could not follow. He was speaking in a very high philosophical term. So at that time I had no capacity to under... Still, I wanted to hear him, I understand or not understand.

So this is very good qualification. So those who are coming here to listen about God, they are very fortunate. Krsna will help them. Sravanam. The beginning of bhakti-yoga is started from the practice of sravanam, aural reception, ear. Therefore the mantra is given through the ear, initiation mantra. Then kirtanam.

sravanam kirtanam visnoh
smaranam pada-sevanam
arcanam vandanam dasyam
sakhyam atma-nivedanam
 [SB 7.5.23]

There are nine different processes. The most important process is hearing. And as soon as you want to hear, that means you have to concentrate your mind. So naturally, the mind becomes, I mean to say, locked. Sravanam kirtanam. But if we sleep, that is another thing, that "Let the lectures go on. Let me have some rest." That is another thing. But if you hear, if you are anxious to hear, then mind has to be engaged. Without attention, you cannot hear. If your mind is something doing, you are thinking of marketing something, or sometimes..., so you can hear, make a show of hearing, but you are not hearing. Therefore mind is the first thing. Sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayor vacamsi vaikuntha-gunanuvarnane. If you engage your mind in hearing, then you can describe the things in the Vaikuntha, in the spiritual world. Vacamsi vaikuntha-gunanu...

So we have to practice. This is bhakti-yoga. First of all we have to engage the mind. Mind. And as soon as you engage the mind in hearing about Krsna, Krsna will help you in cleansing the mind. That is the opinion given by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. Because everything... We cannot understand about God, or we cannot see God, or we do not know what is God, because there are so many dirty things on the mind. Otherwise, as soon as the mind is clear, devoid of all dirty things, you can see. You can understand what is God; you can see God every moment. Premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santah sadaiva hrdayesu vilo... [Bs. 5.38]. So there is no difficulty. God is here, Krsna. But one's mind is not clear. He cannot see God. He sees a statue of stone. He sees a statue of stone. And whose mind is clear, like Caitanya Mahaprabhu, as soon as He sees Jagannatha, immediately fainted. Here is Krsna. Actually, that is the fact. Here is Krsna. Krsna is omnipresent. That is God's qualification: omnipresent, He is present everywhere. So why not present in the temple? He is present here. But we have no eyes to see. Because our mind is not clean.

So we cannot use the senses to see God. That is the defect. Therefore premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena [Bs. 5.38]. By the bhakti process, by devotional service, you cleanse your mind, you cleanse your senses. As soon as your mind is cleansed, then senses are also clean. That is helped by Krsna Himself, as He says in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, srnvatam sva-kathah. As soon as Krsna sees that you are eager to hear about Him... Srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah [SB 1.2.17]. By the first hearing you may not understand about Krsna, but if you simply hear with little attention, although you do not understand, still, you will be pious. Because the dirty things means covered with impious activities. So if you hear about Krsna, then gradually you will become pious, simply by hearing. Simply... Just like if there is injection, anti-some disease, vaccine. You understand or not understand, it will act. Suppose if you take poison, if you do not understand what is poison, it will act. Similarly, krsna-katha is so powerful that if you simply hear, even if you do not understand, then you will become pious. And by becoming pious... Because without becoming pious, nobody can understand Krsna. It is said in the Bhagavad-gita, yesam anta-gatam papam jananam punya-karmanam: "Those who are twenty-four hours engaged in pious activities..."

Therefore we engage our students in the bhakti-yoga practice, twenty-four hours routine work, because it is pious activities. So he will be purified. He will be purified. We have got so many times offering arati, offering prasadam, cleansing the temple, dressing the Deity, talking about him, twenty-four hours must be. Kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc. adi 17.31]. Kirtaniyah or sevaniyah sada harih, twenty-four hours. In this way we become purified. Ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha... [Cc. Antya 20.12]. As soon as your mind is cleansed of all dirty things, then you become fit for going back to home, back to Godhead.

So any yoga practice... But other yoga practice -- hatha-yoga practice, dhyana-yoga practice, karma-yoga practice, jnana-yoga practice -- these are very difficult in this age. But if you take to bhakti-yoga practice... It is recommended, sravanam kirtanam. Kalau tad dhari-kirtanat. In this age, Kali-yuga, this hari-kirtana is bhakti-yoga. Krte yad dhyayato visnum tretayam yajato makhaih. In different ages, because the people are different, so different methods are prescribed in the sastra. In the Satya-yuga the meditation method was possible. In other yuga it is not possible. In Treta-yuga, by sacrificing big, big yajna, performing yajna; in Dvapara-yuga by temple worship; and kalau tad dhari-kirtanat, and in this Kali-yuga, simply by hari-kirtana, by chanting the holy name of the Lord, you can get the same result. Therefore our process is kirtana always. Kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc. adi 17.31].

So by bhakti-yoga practice you become perfect in all yogic practices and ultimately you realize God very easily and directly, and that will help you to go back to home, back to Godhead. That is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita,

janma karma me divyam
yo janati tattvatah
tyaktva deham punar janma
naiti mam eti kaunteya
 [Bg. 4.9]

Anyone who understands Krsna in truth... Janma karma me divyam yo janati tattvatah. Tattvatah means in truth, not superficially. If you understand Krsna in truth, as He is... And He is speaking Himself about Himself. There is no difficulty. If you simply accept Krsna, what He says, if you follow, then you become perfect and you become fit for going back to home, back to Godhead.

Thank you very much. (end)

"Secret Of Controlling The Senses"

68/12/19 Los Angeles, Bhagavad-gita 2.62-72

Prabhupada: Who will read? You will read? Give me one book. Give me one book. Open it. Where you are reading?

Tamala Krsna: Chapter Two, verse 62.

Prabhupada: Page?

Tamala Krsna: Page 84.

Prabhupada: Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises [Bg. 2.62]." Purport. "One who is not Krsna conscious is subjected to material desires while contemplating the objects of the senses. The senses require real engagements, and if they are not engaged in the transcendental loving service of the Lord, they will certainly seek engagement in the service of materialism."

Prabhupada: Yes. Here is the secret of yoga system. Yoga indriya-samyama. The real purpose of yoga is to control the senses. Our material activities means to engage the sense in some particular objective or enjoyment. That is our material engagement. And yoga system means that you have to control the senses and detach the senses from material enjoyment, or material pleasure and pains, and divert it, focusing towards seeing the Supersoul Visnu within your soul (self?). That is the real purpose of yoga. Yoga does not mean... Of course, in the beginning there are different rules and regulations, sitting posture, just to bring the mind under control. But they are not end themselves. The end is to stop the material engagement and begin spiritual engagement. So here it is explained. Go on reading.

Tamala Krsna: "In the material world everyone, including Lord Siva and Lord Brahma -- to say nothing of other demigods in the heavenly planets -- is subjected to the influence of sense objects."

Prabhupada: Sense objects, yes.

Tamala Krsna: "Sense objects. And the only method to get out of this puzzle of material existence is to become Krsna conscious."

Prabhupada: It is learned from Vedic literature that... Of course, they are showing us, Lord Siva, Lord Brahma. They were also sometimes attracted by sense objects. Just like Lord Brahma, his daughter Sarasvati... Sarasvati is considered to be the most perfect form of beauty, womanly beauty, Sarasvati. So Lord Brahma became enchanted by the beauty of his daughter just to show us the example that even personalities like Lord Brahma sometimes become enchanted. This maya is so strong. He forgot that "She's my daughter." Then to penance this, Brahma had to quit the body. These stories are there in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Similarly, Lord Siva also, when Krsna appeared before him in Mohini-murti... Mohini means the most enchanting, beautiful womanly form. Lord Siva also became mad after Her. So wherever She was going, Lord Siva was chasing. And it is stated that while chasing Mohini-murti, Lord Siva had discharges. So these examples are there. As it is stated in the Bhagavad-gita, daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14]. The whole material energy is enchanting every one of us by this beauty, the womanly beauty. Actually, there is no beauty. It is illusion. Sankaracarya says that "You are after this beauty, but have you analyzed this beauty? What is the beauty?" Etad rakta-mamsa-vikaram. It is just like our student(s) Govinda dasi and Nara-narayana molding plaster of paris. At this time, there is no attraction. But this plaster of paris when it will be nicely painted, it will be so attractive. Similarly, this body is combination of blood and muscles and veins. If you cut the upper portion of your body, as soon as you see inside, it is all obnoxious horrible things. But outwardly so painted by the illusory color of maya, oh, it looks very attractive. And that is attracting our senses. This is the cause of our bondage. We are being bound up by some false illusory beauty of this world. Mirage. The exact example is the mirage. What is mirage? Reflection of the sunlight on the desert appears like water. Where is water there? There is no water. The animal, thirsty animal, is after the mirage. "Oh, here is water. I'll be satisfied." Similarly we are hankering after, running after the mirage. There is no peace, there is no happiness. Therefore we have to divert our attention back to Godhead. Don't run after this mirage. Just turn back to Godhead, back to Krsna. That is our propaganda. Don't divert your... Don't engage your senses in the illusory material beauty. Just apply your senses to Krsna, the real beautiful. That is Krsna consciousness. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "Lord Siva once was in deep meditation, but when the beautiful maiden Parvati agitated him for sense pleasure, he agreed to the proposal and as a result Karttikeya was born."

Prabhupada: Oh, here is Karttikeya present. (laughter) Yes. Hare Krsna. Go on. (laughter)

Tamala Krsna: "When Haridasa Thakura was a young devotee of the Lord he was similarly allured by the incarnation of Mayadevi."

Prabhupada: Now here is the difference. Lord Siva, he is the greatest of the demigods. He was also allured by Parvati, and as a result of that attraction, this boy Karttikeya was born. That was the, what is called, conspiracy of the demigods, that unless one son is born out of the semina of Lord Siva, it is impossible to conquer the demons. So Karttikeya is considered the commander in chief of the demigods. But here, another example. Haridasa Thakura. Haridasa Thakura was young boy, about twenty, twenty-four years old, and he was chanting Hare Krsna, and the landlord in that village, he was very much envious of Haridasa Thakura. He conspired and engaged one prostitute to defy him. So the prostitute agreed and at dead of night, with very beautiful dress and she was young, and tried to captivate Haridasa Thakura. But he was not captivated. That is the difference. A Krsna conscious person, even an ordinary person, not in the level of Lord Siva or Lord Brahma, he's never conquered by maya. But one who is not fully in Krsna consciousness, either he may be Lord Siva or Lord Brahma, he'll be conquered by maya, what to speak of others. This is the position. Go on. "When Haridasa Thakura was a young devotee of the Lord..."

Tamala Krsna: "...he was similarly allured by the incarnation of Mayadevi, but Haridasa easily passed the test because of his unalloyed devotion to Lord Krsna. A sincere devotee of the Lord learns to hate all material sense enjoyment due to his higher taste for spiritual enjoyment in the association of the Lord. That is the secret of success."

Prabhupada: Param drstva nivartate. Param, if you get better thing, you give up inferior quality thing. That is our nature. Just like our students, American students, they were all accustomed to meat-eating. But now another student, she is preparing the sweetballs, ISKCON balls, and they are forgetting meat-eating. They do not like any more meat-eating. They have got better engagement, sweetballs. (laughter) Similarly, that is the way. When you get better engagement... We are hankering after pleasure. Anandamayo 'bhyasat (Vedanta-sutra 1.1.12). Every living entity is seeking after pleasure. That is his nature. You cannot stop. If you stop... Just like a child is seeking after some enjoyment, he's breaking something, enjoyment. But he does not, that... He is breaking, but he's simply enjoying that breaking. Similarly, we do not know what is enjoyment in this material concept of life. We are breaking and building. In your country I have seen in several places. Nice building is dismantled, and again, in that very place, another building is raised. You see? Breaking and building. Breaking and... "Oh, this building is old. Break it." The same childish play. You see? Simply wasting engagement, valuable time of this human form. Breaking and building, breaking and building. "This motorcar is useless. Another '69 model." And thousands of people are engaged in that '69 model. You see? What is that? In essence, the breaking and building, breaking and building. Just like the child. You see? So unless one has got better engagement, Krsna consciousness, surely they will be engaged in this breaking and building, breaking and building. Childish engagement. Param drstva nivartate. And so far our students of Krsna consciousness, they are trying to get two hours more than twenty-four hours. They have got so much, so many engagements.

So unless one is engaged in Krsna consciousness, he must be in the maya's engagement, same thing. People may eulogize such engagement, "Oh, he's so moneyed man. He has dismantled such nice building and again constructed another nice building." So, this is very nice in material estimation, but in spiritual estimation they are simply wasting time. (sings) Hari hari biphale janama gonainu, that song. (sings) Manusya-janama paiya, radha-krsna na bhajiya, janiya suniya bisa khainu. Knowingly, purposefully, I am drinking poison. Poison. Why poison? Wasting time of this valuable human form of life is drinking poison. Just like a man drinks poison. He does not know what is his next life. He's going to become a ghost. For years together, he'll not have this material body as punishment. You have seen? Gaurasundara has written one ghost article in our Back to Godhead. In England, that ghost who fought with Cromwell? There is still fighting. At night, there is sound of fighting going on. You see? So poison means this human form of life is the chance to get into Krsna consciousness and go back to Godhead. But if we do not engage in this Krsna consciousness, simply engage in this breaking and constructing, then we are simply drinking poison. That means next life I'll be thrown into the cycle of birth and death in the 8,400,000 species of life, and my life is spoiled. We do not know for how many millions of years I'll have to travel in that cycle of birth and death. Therefore it is poison. Janiya suniya bisa khainu. I know this, I am hearing. Still,... Janiya suniya bisa... Just like a thief. Janiya suniya, these words are very significant. Janiya means knowing, and suniya means hearing. So a habituated thief, he knows that "If I steal I shall be put into jail." And he has heard from scriptures that "Don't steal. Then you'll be put into hell." So he has heard from the scriptures and he has seen practically. He has experienced practically, but still, as soon as he's freed from the prison life, he again commits the same mistake. Janiya suniya bisa khainu. We know, we are hearing from the scriptures, from authorities, Vedic literatures, that "I have got this miserable conditional body, material body, to suffer threefolds of material miseries; still, I am not very much anxious how to stop this repetition of birth and death. I am drinking poison." Janiya suniya bisa khainu. Hari hari biphale janama gonainu. These songs are very instructive. Simply purposefully, we are drinking poison. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "One who is not, therefore, in Krsna consciousness, however powerful he may be in controlling the senses by artificial repression, is sure ultimately to fall, for the slightest thought of sense pleasure will drive him to gratify his desires." 63: "From anger, delusion arises, and from delusion bewilderment of memory. When memory is bewildered intelligence is lost, and when intelligence is lost one falls down again into the material pool."

Prabhupada: Our position is, we are constituted of this body. Body means the senses and the controller of the senses or the, what is called, driver, driver of the senses, is the mind. And mind is conducted, thinking, feeling, and willing, the psychology, the science of psychology, that is being conducted under intelligence. And above the intelligence, I am sitting. I am a spirit soul. So how we become victim of this maya, that is described here, that from anger, delusion arises, and from delusion, bewilderment of memory. Bewilderment memory. I have forgotten completely that I am not this body, I am spirit soul, aham brahmasmi; I am part and parcel of the Supreme Brahman, spirit, absolute whole. That I have forgotten. And when memory is bewildered, and as soon as I forget that I am spirit soul, I identify myself with this material world, illusion. Intelligence is lost. I should have used my intelligence to conduct the activities of the mind -- thinking, feeling and willing -- and because my mind is not controlled, my senses are not controlled, therefore I am fallen. This is the analysis of the whole bodily construction. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: 64: "One who can control his senses by regulative principles and who is free from attachment and aversion can attain the mercy of God."

Prabhupada: Yes. We have fallen down. How we have fallen down? Fallen down to the platform of sense enjoyment. Therefore you have to begin rising up from the senses, controlling of the senses. That is the way of self-realization. Either you practice yoga or practice bhakti, devotional service, the beginning is to control the senses. So the yogis and other methods, they are trying to control the senses by force. "I shall go to the Himalayas. I shall not see any more beautiful woman. I shall close down my eyes." These are forceful. You cannot control your senses. There are many instances. You don't require to go to Himalaya. You just remain in Los Angeles city and engage your eyes to see Krsna, you are more than a person who has gone to Himalayas. You'll forget all other thing. This is our process. You don't require to change your position. You engage your ears for hearing Bhagavad-gita As It Is, you'll forget all nonsense. You engage your eyes to see the beauty of the Deity, Krsna. You engage your tongue for tasting Krsna prasadam. You engage your legs to come to this temple. You engage your hands to work for Krsna. You engage your nose to smell the flowers offered to Krsna. Then where your senses will go? He's captivated all round. The perfection is sure. You don't require to control your senses forcibly, don't see, don't do it, don't do it. No. You have to change the engagement, the status. That will help you. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: Purport. "It is already explained that one may externally control the senses by some artificial process, but unless the senses are engaged in the transcendental service of the Lord there is every chance of a fall. Although a person in full Krsna consciousness may apparently be on the sensual plane, actually, because of his being Krsna conscious, he has no attachment to or detachment from such sensual activities. The Krsna conscious person is concerned only with the satisfaction of Krsna and nothing else. Therefore he is transcendental to all attachment or detachment. If Krsna wants, the devotee can do anything which is ordinarily undesirable, and if Krsna does not want, he will not do anything which he would have ordinarily done for his own satisfaction. Therefore to act or not to act is within his control because he acts only under the dictation of Krsna. This consciousness is the causeless mercy of the Lord which the devotee can achieve in spite of his being attached to the sensual platform." 65: "For one who is so situated, the threefold miseries of material life exist no longer. In such a happy state one's intelligence is steady." 66: "One who is not in transcendental consciousness can have neither a controlled mind nor steady intelligence, without which there is no possibility of peace, and how can there be any happiness without peace?"67

Prabhupada: Everyone in this material world, they are after peace, but they don't want to control the senses. It is not possible. Just like you are diseased, and doctor says that "You take this medicine, you take this diet," but you cannot control. You are taking anything you like, against the instruction of the physician. Then how you can be cured? Similarly, we want cure of the chaotic condition of this material world, we want peace and prosperity, but we are not ready to control the senses. We do not know how to control the senses. We do not know the real yogic principle of controlling the senses. So there is no possibility of peace. Kutah santir ayuktasya. The exact word is there in the Bhagavad-gita. If you are not engaged in Krsna consciousness, there is no possibility of peace. Artificially, you may try for it. It is not possible. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: 67: "As a boat on the water is swept away by a strong wind, even so, one of the senses in which the mind becomes fixed can carry away a man's intelligence."

Prabhupada: Yes. If you... Suppose on the Pacific Ocean you are on a boat or on a nice seat, but if you have no controlling capacity, one wave of that Pacific Ocean can immediately bring you to the bottom of the sea. So this is required. We are in the midst of the Pacific Ocean of this mayika world. Samsara-samudra. It is called samudra. So at any moment our boat can be topsy-turvied if we have no controlling power. Yes.

Tamala Krsna: 68: "Therefore, O mighty armed, one whose senses are restrained from their object is certainly of steady intelligence."

Prabhupada: Yes. Now, one whose sense are restrained... This human life is meant for restraining the senses. Tapah. This is called tapasya, penance. Suppose I am habituated to some type of sense gratification. Now, I take to Krsna consciousness. My spiritual master or the scripture says, "Don't do this." So in the beginning, I may feel some inconvenience, but if you can tolerate that, that is tapasya. That is tapasya. Tapasya means I am feeling some inconvenience, bodily, but I am tolerating. That is called tapasya. And this human form of life is meant for that tapasya. Not that because my senses are demanding this satisfaction, I shall immediately offer. No. I shall train myself in such a way that my senses may demand, "My dear sir, give me this facility," I will say, "No. You cannot have." This is called gosvami or svami. At the present moment, everyone, we are, we have made our svami or master the senses, and when you actually become the master of the senses, then you are svami or gosvami. That is the significance of svami and gosvami. It is not the dress. One who has controlling power, one who is not dictated by the senses, one who is not servant of the senses. My tongue is dictating, "Please take me to that restaurant and eat sticks." What is that sticks?
Devotee: Steak.

Prabhupada: Steak? What is that spelling?

Devotee: S-t-e-a-k.

Prabhupada: So anyway... Or that fried chicken. Yes. So tongue is dictating me. But if you can control your tongue, "No. I'll give you sweetballs. Don't go there." (laughter) Then you'll become master of the senses. You see? The others are trying that "Don't go there," only. That is impossible. The tongue must have something beautiful. Otherwise it is not possible. That is artificial. If the tongue, you give him something more beautiful than this fried chick or stick or this or that, it will stop. That is the policy. Our policy is that. We can give that, what is called, casein fried with rice. How nice it is. He'll forget meat-eating. So this is the policy, Krsna consciousness. All the senses should be supplied something. Not artificially stop it. That is not possible. That is not possible. Others, they are simply trying artificially to stop the function of the senses. No. That is not possible. Our policy is tat-paratvena nirmalam. You can purify the activities of the senses, being engaged in Krsna consciousness. Then senses will not disturb you. If you want to control the senses, you have to control the tongue first of all. Then you will be able to control other senses very easily. So you give tongue the engagement of chanting Hare Krsna, and for tasting Krsna prasadam you'll find that your other senses are already controlled. This is the key of controlling our senses, the tongue. And if you give privilege and indulgence to the tongue, you'll never be able to control other senses. This is the secret of controlling senses. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: 69: "What is night for all beings is the time of awakening for the self-controlled, and the time of awakening for all beings is the night for the introspective sage." Purport: "There are two classes of intelligent men. The one is intelligent in material activities for sense gratification, and the other is introspective and awake to the cultivation of self-realization. Activities of the introspective sage or thoughtful man are night for persons materially absorbed. Materialistic persons remain asleep during such a night due to their ignorance of self-realization. The introspective sage, however, remains alert in that night of the materialistic man."

Prabhupada: Night means when people sleep, and day means when they are awake. This is the understanding of day and night. So one, the materialistic persons, they are sleeping in the matter of spiritual understanding. So therefore the activities which we find in daytime of the materialistic person, actually that is night. For the spiritualistic person, they see that these people they got the facility of self-realization, this human form of life. How they are wasting by sleeping. And the materialistic persons, they are seeing, "Oh, these Krsna conscious young boys, they have given up everything and they are chanting Hare Krsna. How nonsense. They are sleeping." So you see? So in the vision of the materialistic person, these activities are night, sleeping. And for the self-realized person, these activities are sleeping. You see? Just the opposite. They are seeing the Krsna conscious person as wasting time and the Krsna conscious person is seeing them as wasting time. This is the position. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "Such sages feel transcendental pleasure in the gradual advancement of spiritual culture, whereas the man in materialistic activities, being asleep to self-realization, dreams of varieties of sense pleasure."

Prabhupada: Yes. They are dreaming, "Now we shall do this. Next time, I shall have this. Next time, I shall have this. Next time, I shall kill that enemy. Next time, I shall do this." They are planning like that. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "...feeling sometimes happy and sometimes distressed in his sleeping condition. The introspective man is always indifferent to materialistic happiness and distress."

Prabhupada: The introspective man who is after self-realization, he knows very well, "Suppose if I do in future such and such big business, or such... I can construct such big skyscraper house." But because he's introspective, he knows that "What I shall do with all these things? As soon as I exit from the platform, everything remains here, and I take another form of body, begins another life." That is introspection. The materialistic person they cannot understand what is the future. They are thinking this body is everything. "We have got this body, and when it is finished, it is finished for all." These questions we have already discussed. But actually it is not. This is the first understanding of self-realization, that soul is eternal, it is not annihilated even after the annihilation of this body. This is the beginning of self-realization. So these people they do not understand it. They don't care for it. That is their sleeping. That is their miserable condition. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "He goes on with his self-realization activity undisturbed by material reactions." 70: "A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires that enter like rivers into the ocean, which is ever being filled but is always still, can alone achieve peace, and not the man who strives to satisfy such desires."

Prabhupada: Now, here is the... A materialistic person, he has his desires. Suppose he is doing some business, he is getting money. So he fulfills his desire in materialistic way. But a Krsna conscious person, suppose he is doing in the same way, he is also planning or doing something after (for?) Krsna consciousness. So these two different spheres of activities are not on the same level. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: 71: "A person who has given up all desires for sense gratification, who lives free from desires, who has given up all sense of proprietorship and is devoid of false ego, he alone can attain real peace."

Prabhupada: Yes. So the person who has given up all desire for sense gratification. We haven't got to kill our desire. How you can kill? Desire is constant companion of a living entity. That is the living symptom. Because I am living entity, you are living entity, you have got desire, I have got desire. Not this table. The table has no life; therefore it has no desire. The table cannot say that "I am standing here for so many months. Please move me to another place." No. Because it has no desire. But if I am sitting here for three hours, oh, I'll say, "Oh, I got tired. Please remove me from... Please get me another place." So desire must be there because we are living. We have to change the engagement of desires. If we engage our desires for sense gratification, that is material. But if we engage our desires for acting on behalf of Krsna, that is our, we're free from all desires. This is the criterion.

Tamala Krsna: 72: "That is the way of the spiritual and godly life, after attaining which a man is not bewildered. Being so situated, even at the hour of death, one can enter into the kingdom of God." Purport: "One can attain Krsna consciousness or divine life at once, within a second, or one may not attain such a state of life even after millions of births."

Prabhupada: Several times there were questions that "How long it will take to become Krsna conscious?" I have also answered, that in a second it can be done. The same thing is being explained. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "It is only a matter of understanding and accepting the fact. Khatvanga Maharaja attained this state of life just a few minutes before his death by surrendering unto Krsna. Nirvana means ending the process of materialistic life. According to Buddha's philosophy, there is only void after this material life. But the Bhagavad-gita teaches differently. Actual life begins after the completion of this material life. For the gross materialist, it is sufficient to know that one has to end his materialistic way of life. But for persons who are spiritually advanced, there is another life after this materialistic one. Therefore, before ending this life, if one fortunately becomes Krsna conscious, certainly he at once attains the stage of brahma-nirvana. There is no difference between the kingdom of God and the devotional service of the Lord. Since both of them are on the absolute plane, to be engaged in the transcendental loving service of the Lord is to have attained the spiritual kingdom. In the material world there are activities of sense gratification, whereas in the spiritual world there are activities of Krsna consciousness. Therefore attainment of Krsna consciousness even during this life is immediate attainment of Brahman, and one who is situated in Krsna consciousness has certainly already entered into the kingdom of God. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura has summarized the Second Chapter of the Bhagavad-gita as being the contents for the whole text. In the Bhagavad-gita, the subject matters are karma-yoga, jnana-yoga..."

Prabhupada: Jnana-yoga.

Tamala Krsna: "...jnana-yoga and bhakti-yoga. In the Second Chapter, karma-yoga and jnana-yoga have been clearly discussed, and a glimpse of bhakti-yoga has also been given. Thus end the Bhaktivedanta Purports of the Second Chapter of the Srimad Bhagavad-gita in the matter of its contents."

Prabhupada: Thank you. Any question? Yes.

Tamala Krsna: I've always been confused as to... It says here that a pure devotee like Haridasa Thakura would not fall victim to Mayadevi's temptations, but even Lord Brahma, Lord Siva, might fall victim. I always thought that they were pure devotees of the Lord.

Prabhupada: No. They are pure devotees, but they are gunavatara. Just like Lord Brahma is the supreme personality within this material universe. He's the father of all living entities. So they are... Of course, if we very scrutinizingly study, Haridasa Thakura is, in devotional service, in greater position than Brahma. Although he is considered the incarnation of Brahma, Brahma Haridasa. So we should not be disturbed when we see Lord Brahma and Lord Siva is captivated in that way. We should take this instruction, that is Lord Brahma, Lord Siva becomes victim of maya sometimes, what to speak of us? Therefore we shall be very, very careful. There is chance of falldown even in the status of Brahma and Siva, what to speak of ordinary persons. Therefore we should be very strongly inclined to Krsna consciousness like Haridasa Thakura. Then we shall be able very easily to overcome the allurement of maya. That is to be understood. Not that "Brahma showed that," what is called, "weakness. He is weak or he is less." No. That is for our instruction. Yes. Or first of all, his. Yes.

Devotee: It is said that once you achieve the Godhead, once you go back to Krsna, that you don't fall down. But it is also said that we come from there originally. If we came from there, how did we fall if we were already there?

Prabhupada: Yes. Just like this example that personalities like Brahma and Siva, they also sometimes become victims of maya. So our, I mean to say, potency of falling down is always there, potency. And because we are part and parcel of God and because we are now in the material world, it is to be understood that we have fallen down. But you cannot trace out the history when you have fallen down. That is impossible. But our position is marginal. At any moment, we can fall down. That tendency is there. Therefore we are called marginal. But one... Just like it is very simple to understand. Everyone is prone to fall diseased. Is it not? Now when you are diseased, there is no necessity of finding out the history when you became diseased. You are diseased, make your treatment, that's all. Similarly, we are in the material condition of life. Just go on treating it, and as soon as you are cured, be careful not to fall down again. But there is chance of falling down, again becoming diseased. Not that because you once become cured, there is no chance of becoming diseased again. There is chance. Therefore we shall be very much careful. Yes.

Devotee: In the Bhagavad-gita it says on page 41(?) that Brahma is the second spiritual master. I thought that all spiritual masters live forever; but Brahma doesn't live forever.

Prabhupada: Yes. We live forever. By change of body we do not die. You live forever, I live forever. Death means we change this body, that's all. Just like you change your dress. When you change your dress, it does not mean that you die. Similarly change of this body does not mean actually death. Or to appear in a different body does not mean actually birth. There is no birth and death of the living entity, but the change of body is taking place in our material condition. That is taken as birth and death. Actually there is no birth and death. Yes?

Madhudvisa: Prabhupada, for one who worships Lord Buddha, is there a planet for him to go to? For one who worships Lord Buddha in the bhakta-gana(?), they say, or some way, some kind of devotional service rendered towards Lord Buddha, is there a planet for him to go to which Lord Buddha presides over or...

Prabhupada: Yes. There is a neutral stage. That is not planet. That is the marginal position between the spiritual world and the material world. But one has to come down again. Unless one enters into the spiritual sky and takes his situation in some of the spiritual planet... Just like you fly in the sky. Unless you get some planet, you'll have to come down again. You cannot fly all the days in the sky. That is not possible. That is neutral stage. Neither in other planet, nor in this planet, flying. How long you shall fly? You have to take some shelter. But if you have no shelter in the higher planets or higher situation, then you shall have to come down. So... The same example can be repeated. Suppose if you go in the outer space... Just like the sputnik men, they go sometime. People think, "Oh, where he has gone, so high, so high." But he has not gone anywhere. He's coming down again. So it is false clapping, "Oh, he has gone so high, so high." What is the use of going so high? You are coming down next moment. Because you have no power to enter into another planet. So what your machine, this sputnik or these planes, will help you? You have to come down again. Rather, you shall fall down in some Atlantic Ocean, or Pacific Ocean, and somebody will go and pick you up. You see? This is your position. So voidism means to fly in the sky and be puffed up, "I have come so high, I have come so high, so high." (laughs) That foolish man does not know how long he'll keep in that high position. You see? He will come down. This is maya's attraction. He'll have to come down. There is a verse,

ye 'nye 'ravindaksa vimukta-maninas
tvayy asta-bhavad avisuddha-buddhayah
aruhya krcchrena param padam tatah
patanty adho 'nadrta-yusmad-anghrayah
[SB 10.2.32]

This is the prayer by Prahlada Maharaja. He says, "My dear Lord, lotus-eyed, Aravindaksa," ye anye. "Some third-class men, they are very much proud of ending this material life, these nirvana or these impersonalists." Vimukta-maninah. Vimukta-maninah means they are simply falsely thinking that they have surpassed the clutches of maya. Falsely. Vimukta-maninah. Just like if you falsely think that "I am the proprietor of this Los Angeles city," is it not your false thinking? Similarly, if anyone thinks that "Now I have attained nirvana or I have merged into the Supreme." You may think like that. That maya is very strong. You may be puffed up by such false prestige. Vimukta-maninah. Bhagavata says, tvayy asta-bhavad avisuddha-buddhayah [SB 10.2.32]. "But because they have not searched out Your lotus feet, therefore their consciousness is impure, thinking ‘I am something.' " Avisuddha-buddhayah. "Their intelligence, consciousness is not purified." Therefore aruhya krcchrena. "They perform very severe practice." Just like the Buddhists, they have got very... Now, those who are not practicing, that is different thing. But rules and regulations, Lord Buddha himself, he showed. He left his everything and became engaged in simply meditation. Who is doing that? Nobody is doing that. Sankaracarya's first condition is that "First of all you take sannyasa; then you talk of becoming Narayana." Who is taking sannyasa? So they are simply falsely thinking. Actually, their intelligence is impure, consciousness is impure. Therefore in spite of such endeavors, the result is, aruhya krcchrena param, although they go very high, say 25,000 miles or millions of miles up, they do not find any shelter, where is moon planet, where is... They come down again to your Moscow city, that's all. Or New York City, that's all. These are the examples. When they're high up, oh, they'll take photograph. "Oh, this planet is so, this earthly planet is so green or so small. I am going round day and night and seeing in one hour three times day and night." All right, very good. Please come down again. (laughs) That's all. maya is so strong, she will say, "Yes, very good. You are very advanced in your scientific knowledge, but please come down. Come here. Otherwise you are going to be put into the Atlantic Ocean." That's all. And they'll still be puffed up, "Oh, we are making progress. Within next ten years, you can purchase ticket or land in the moon." You know, in Russia they sold land, and they advertised that "There is Sea of Moscow. We have planted our flag on the sea in the..." So these are propaganda. They cannot go even into the nearest planet, what to speak of the spiritual sky. If you actually serious of going to the spiritual sky and Vaikunthaloka, then take this simple method, Hare Krsna. That's all.

Guest: I am interested in atheism.

Prabhupada: (without hearing or noticing guest) This is the gift of Lord Caitanya. Namo maha-vadanyaya. Therefore Rupa Gosvami says, "You are the greatest of all charitable persons because You are offering the greatest boon." Krsna-prema-pradaya te [Cc. Madhya 19.53]. "You are offering love of Krsna, which will get me to the kingdom of Krsna." This is the greatest gift to the human society. But the foolish persons they do not understand it. What can I do? Daivi hy esa gunamayi [Bg. 7.14]. The maya is very strong. If we say that "Here is a small booklet, Easy Journey to Other Planets," they'll not take it. They will make plan of how to go in other planet by sputniks, which is impossible. You cannot go anywhere. That is our conditioned life. Conditioned means you must stay here. You must stay here. Who is allowing to go other planet? For coming to, to take the permanent visa of your country, I had to fight so much, and you are going to moon planet? There is no visa? They will allow you only to enter? It is so easy thing? But they foolishly think that simply "I am the monarch of all I survey." That's all. This planet is the monarch, and all other planets they're all subservient. They will satisfy our senses. This is foolishness. All right. Chant Hare Krsna. (end)
