Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: ....when he has gone to send (indistinct) that you have offered some room here?Saurabha: No, well there was, on the floor space there is facility for a doctor, so he saw that on the plan, so he proposed that "Well, I'm a dentist, so I can give the devotees free service."
Prabhupada: No, there will be no medical service in the building. (Hindi to some men) These quarters there is no such building, huh? Our, this pattern?
Saurabha: No. Not in Bombay, nowhere in Bombay.
Prabhupada: (chuckling) That's very good.
Harikesa: There will be after this, though.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Harikesa: After this there will be...
Devotee: Imitation. (Prabhupada laughs)
Lokanatha: There should not be any medical service in the building, new building, so what about there should be any other place on the land, or they should not...?
Prabhupada: That we shall do conveniently. It is not very urgent. When there is spare room-then. Medical service is to cure the material disease, not this temporary headache and stomachache. There are so many medical services for these things, but where is the medical service for curing bhava-roga, material disease? That is wanted. (aside:) Hare Krsna! Medical service does not give any guarantee that there will be no more disease. Our service is guarantee, there will be no more birth, death, old age and disease. That is the difference. (pause) Mauritius, I was suffering so much from dental pain, I never went to the dentist; I invented my medicine, and it cured. (laughter)
Harikesa: Now everyone else is using it here.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Harikesa: I taught them all, and they're all using it now. Or they will all be using it.
Prabhupada: They like it?
Harikesa: Oh, yes. The best.
Prabhupada: Huh? The only defect is that all the ingredients are not very finely powdered. If it is very finely powdered, then it will be very nice.
Lokanatha: You are perfect in all respects. You are your own doctor...
Prabhupada: I am not doctor, but I created many doctors. [break] (to Dr. Patel:) Hare Krsna! Jaya. (Hindi)
Dr. Patel: (Hindi: ap lok hamye sa chaye) I have decided not to come today with you. Because I was driven away yesterday morning by your men. I came to look after you.
Prabhupada: How is that?
Dr. Patel: God only knows. They have behaved so very badly, be three of us. And you were not sleeping even, because I wanted to give you the prescription, so I ran from my house.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Hamsaduta: No, I was not...
Dr. Patel: No, you were not.
Harisauri: No, I was there. You had just taken rest in the bedroom, so I thought it best not to disturb you.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes, I was taking rest.
Dr. Patel: I wrote out the prescription and gave it.
Prabhupada: Yes, I got that. Huh.
Lokanatha: So you can come?
Prabhupada: So I was resting.
Dr. Patel: No, I won't come. I want only humble obeisances today. Thank you very much. (leaves)
Prabhupada: So he wanted to see me?
Harisauri: He brought two of his friends in as well. I thought he was going to create such a commotion, and you had just taken rest, so I said better to let you rest and not disturb you.
Prabhupada: (to passerby) Hare Krsna! (japa)
Lokanatha: All over the world, the Ratha-yatra attracts thousands of people, but in Bombay we'll not have Jagannatha Deities, so how could we have Ratha-yatra and attract people? (indistinct) give some correction.
Prabhupada: ...our temple then.... [break]
Giriraja: A question was raised about Lord Rama worshiping Siva.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Giriraja: At one of the programs, somebody raised the question that we cited that Lord Siva is worshiping Krsna, that he is a Vaisnava. So that person replied that Lord Rama also worshiped Siva. So he wanted to know the explanation.
Lokanatha: You explained yesterday.
Prabhupada: Sometimes Krsna is chastised by mother Yasoda. So how is that? The Supreme Personality of Godhead is being chastised by mother Yasoda?
Giriraja: He likes to be chastised. It's part of the relationship.
Prabhupada: Similarly, He likes to worship His devotee. Sometimes the father takes the child on his shoulder. Does it mean the child is more important than the father? They say the Valmiki Ramayana, there is no such incidence as Ramacandra worships Siva. It is later on, interpretation. But even if He does so, what is the wrong here?
Harikesa: That later-on Ramayana has caused some havoc.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Harikesa: That later-on interpretation?
Prabhupada: Yes, the Saivaites, they want to make Lord Siva the exalted Supreme Person. In South India there is good propaganda. That is always going on.
Lokanatha: When Lord Siva says in Puranas that mukti-pradapah sarvesam visnu... (sic)
Prabhupada: Hm?
Lokanatha: Purana, the same Lord Siva says there is no other liberated besides Visnu.
Devotee: ...engagement, one devotee commented that the reason that Lord Rama worshiped Lord Siva was because He wanted to kill Ravana and Ravana was a devotee of Siva, so Lord Rama worshiped Siva in that respect.
Prabhupada: Hm? What is that?
Harikesa: He said that because Lord Siva was, ah, excuse me, Ravana was a devotee of Lord Siva, that in order that Lord Ramacandra could kill Ravana, He worshiped Siva.
Kirtanananda: He wanted to take permission of him, so they say. Rama wanted to take permission from Siva...
Prabhupada: So Siva is so rascal that he gave permission? That means they are trying to prove Siva is a rascal. (devotees laugh) Because he gave permission to kill his devotee. Then what is the use of his, of one becoming Siva's devotee? If such a rascal that one can take his permission to kill his devotee, so what is the use of becoming a devotee of such a rascal? Huh?
Harikesa: He protected Banasura.
Prabhupada: Huh? What is that? That means that proving that Siva is a rascal. He gave permission to kill his devotee. Then what is the use? Then nobody should become Siva's devotee. That is the conclusion. Because he gives permission to somebody else to kill his devotee. They are trying to prove Lord Siva is a rascal. What do you think? Huh? If I want your permission, please give me your permission, I shall kill your son, and if you say, "Yes, I give my permission," then are you not a rascal? By this example they are making Lord Siva a rascal, that he has no common sense even.
Indian man: (Hindi)
Prabhupada: No, if this proposition is there, that Lord Siva gives permission for killing his devotee, then who will become his devotee? Huh? Is it not?
Indian man: Yes.
Prabhupada: No sane man will become his devotee. All the manufactured foolish statements, just see. Any commonsense man will immediately say, "Then Siva is a rascal; he cannot give protection to his devotee." What do you think? Huh?
Kirtanananda: Of course, Srila Prabhupada, does one have to give protection to their devotee if they break the law? Just like if you have a child, and he murders someone, isn't he supposed to be punished? So if someone goes against the Supreme Personality of Godhead, even if you are a devotee, shouldn't Siva concur?
Prabhupada: No, no. That is another thing. This proposal, that because Lord Ramacandra approached Lord Siva to kill Ravana, and he gave permission, although Ravana was his great devotee. Then what is the use of becoming devotee of Lord Siva? He gives permission. Huh? Is that very reasonable proposal? If I ask your permission that I shall kill your son, will you give permission? No. Then? So Lord Siva gives permission to Lord Ramacandra, "Yes, You can kill Ravana," then what is the use of becoming his devotee?
Harikesa: I think Dr. Patel would say that it's not fair, you have fired the opposition.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Harikesa: It's not fair. You have completely destroyed the opposition. (Prabhupada laughs) There is no question of fight.
Prabhupada: The actual fact is that Lord Siva did not give permission, but he did not go to protect Ravana, because he knew that it was impossible to give him protection. That is summarized in Bengali, rakhe krsna mare ke, mare krsna rakhe ke. If Krsna kills somebody, wants to kill somebody, nobody can give him protection. That is the conclusion. And if Krsna protects somebody, nobody can kill him. Just like Prahlada Maharaja. Huh? He was protected by Lord Nrsimhadeva. Who can kill?
Kirtanananda: Why did Lord Siva try to protect Banasura?
Prabhupada: Huh?
Kirtanananda: Didn't Lord Siva try to protect Banasura?
Prabhupada: Yes. You must try, when your son is in danger, you must try. That is natural. That is not uncommon. You can save or not save, that is a different thing. But it is you duty, if somebody is under your protection, you must try to save him, even at the risk of your life. That is real protector.
Lokanatha: Do you have plans, Srila Prabhupada, to comment on Ramayana in future?
Prabhupada: Hm? First of all finish my Bhagavatam, then we shall talk of other things.
Indian man: Lord Brahma took away the cows and the cowherd boys that Krsna was playing with. At that time Krsna expanded Himself just to (indistinct) about a year or so that these cows are all Krsna expansions, but the gopis were so much (indistinct) to (indistinct) Krsna's (indistinct). Now he started, he doubted that gopis are (indistinct) with Krsna because these cowherds and ah, they are part and parcel of Krsna only, so he was not...
Prabhupada: Hm. That is called, they were playing the role of human being. (pause)
Indian man: ...would be nearing the portion where that (indistinct) is there. I told Giriraja prabhu, when you were sick, that fever is there, you were having fever, so I...
Prabhupada: No, I had no fever.
Indian man: When you went to Vrndavana? Some...
Prabhupada: Oh, yes.
Indian man: So I was telling my wife, she said that you read that Bhagavatam, where that Ban(asura) is there, that Siva means having, producing jvara, fever, so Visnujvara is cold only, so that Visnujvara will bring down the fever. So you were just reading more Bhagavatam only, when you are sick. Anybody who is suffering from fever means you read such and such a portion, so it should come down.
Prabhupada: No, Visnu should not be utilized for curing your fever. (laughter) That is not bhakti. That is business.
Indian man: So you are always reaching for bhakti point. That is too high for mundane people to reach.
Prabhupada: That is bhakti, high, highest. Bhaktya mam abhijanati [Bg. 18.55]. If you have real bhakti, then you can understand Vaisnava. To know Visnu-avan manasa-gocara: it is very difficult.
manusyanam saharesu
kascit yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascid mam vetti tattvatah
 [Bg. 7.3]
To understand Visnu -- very, very difficult. And.... If, but you can understand Visnu by bhakti. So bhakti is so easy thing.
Kirtanananda: How about if a disciple wants to use the help of Visnu for the spiritual master?
Prabhupada: Huh?
Kirtanananda: A disciple wants to take the aid of Visnu for serving the spiritual master.
Prabhupada: Hah. That is nice. That is for curing Visnu's representative. When we were in danger, there was so much obstruction for constructing the temple, and we prayed to Krsna that it should stopped. We prayed to Krsna, "Please give your protection." That is for Visnu's purpose. [break] ...Bhagavad-gita, arto 'rtharthi jijnasur: when one is in distress, he comes to Krsna. So that is not pure bhakti. Pure bhakti means, "I shall not take a farthing from Krsna; I shall give everything to Krsna." That is pure. "I shall not take any return from Krsna." Prahlada Maharaja says, "I am not a merchant, that for my service I take some return for it." No. But sometimes when, since we are not pure devotees, we have no other alternative than to beg Krsna for some material benefit. That is also good. They have said, catur-vidha bhajante mam, sukrtinah, that pious. Although they are not pure devotee, but they are pious. But the duskrtinah, they do not approach Him. That is the difference.
catur-vidha bhajante mam
janah sukrtino'rjuna
arto 'rtharthi jijnasur
jnani ca bharatarsabha
 [Bg. 7.16]
They are also good, pious. And one who does not go to Visnu for any reason, they are most sinful. Here, although he goes to Visnu for some material benefit, he is pious. Na mam duskrtino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah [Bg. 7.15]. Those who are impious, sinful, they do not go. (comes to a part of beach covered by waves) So I will have to jump like this?
Harikesa: No, we made the wrong turn.
Lokanatha: [break] ...window glass.
Prabhupada: That is called maya. (everyone laughs) The light is here, but it appears light is there. This is called maya. (aside:) Hare Krsna! Jaya. The real world is the spiritual world, and here it is simply a reflection, but we are taking this is real world, and spiritual, there is no spiritual. Yatha bhasah tatha tamo. So Sankaracarya said that this world is false, jagan mithya. So, but brahma satyam, he gave the same information. But we are taking this jagat satyam, and there is no spiritual world. This is the defect. Just like.... (aside:) That's all right. ...the mirage, the foolish animal goes after the water in the desert, but there is no water. He is bewildered. But that does not means there is no water anywhere else. There is water, but this mirage water is false. Similarly, this material world is false, but that does not mean there is no spiritual world. The water is somewhere else. That you do not know. But you are after this mirage, water in the desert. (Hindi conversation with man, about water) (aside:) Hare Krsna! Yatra tri-sargo'mrsa. Tejo vari-mrdam vinimayo yatra tri-sargo'mrsa dhamna svena sada nirasta-kuhakam satyam param dhimahi [SB 1.1.1]. Vyasadeva offers his respect to the real truth, satyam param dhimahi, where there is no mirage, there is no false world; real world. And Krsna gives the same information: yad gatva na nivartante tad dhama paramam mama [Bg. 15.6]. "That is My real abode, where if you go you don't come back. And so long you are in this material world, bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19], you accept one body, suffer or enjoy, there is no enjoyment, suffering, and again accept another body; tatha dehantara praptir." This is going on. Therefore they do not understand when you speak of the other world. But if you speak of this world, that "I'll make you happy in this world," thousands and millions will follow you. And as soon as you say that "I shall make you happy in the next world," "These are all nonsense, crazy fellow!"
Devotee: They think it's too imaginary.
Harikesa: Post-dated check!
Prabhupada: And.. Not post-dated! That is real check, but he does not know. He refuses real check. That is not post-dated; it is real check.
Harikesa: Well, they might say that we're always...
Prabhupada: They might say, that is another thing. (Hindi conversation with man about blind leading the blind)
Lokanatha: [break] ...body is finished, everything is finished.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Lokanatha: When body is finished, everything is finished, so why...
Prabhupada: That is their foolishness. You were a child; that body is finished. So you have got a different body. But this simple truth they do not understand; that is their folly. If the body is finished, then why you were a child, you have become a young man? Body is finished, but not everything is finished, everything is there. Only the body is finished. Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. This is explained. So when the body is finished, that does not mean that you are finished. You have to accept another body. That is real truth, and it is spoken by Krsna, not any so-called scientist. The Supreme Person says, na hanyate hanyamane sarire. What do they say about this statement of Krsna, na hanyate hanyamane sarire, that when your body is finished you are not finished?
Lokanatha: Well they won't accept Krsna either.
Prabhupada: Then, how rascal they are!
Indian man: (indistinct) you know there is soul.
Prabhupada: Ha.
Indian man: Body is finished and atma is emerged. So, what, why the atma suffers next generation for the deeds done by the body in this life?
Prabhupada: Because atma is continuation.
Indian man: Continuation, I understand. Suppose my body does something...
Prabhupada: Not body is doing, you are doing...
Indian man: I am doing, that means...
Prabhupada: Therefore you must suffer.
Indian man: ...my atma is not doing. Atma is...
Prabhupada: Atma is doing; therefore atma is suffering. You are not doing. When the atma is born out of your body, body does not do anything. Then...
Indian man: Atma...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Indian man: Atma is amara. So it is eternal, it has no death, no life, no.... It has got a birth, it has got a death that only are superfluous, say only for consolation. But actually it does not die. Body dies, or body destroyed, and that is (indistinct) or suffering. But, when I do something good or bad in this life, see, I am doing.
Prabhupada: You are doing, and therefore you must suffer.
Indian man: But that is not atma. Why atma is...
Prabhupada: ...do not know.
Indian man: (indistinct) ...even (indistinct) atma.
Giriraja: You are the atma.
Indian man: Not atma.
Prabhupada: You do not understand that you are atma. Aham brahmasmi. That you do not understand. You think "I am body." That is nonsense.
Indian man: That point is not clear.
Prabhupada: Why not clear? That means your intelligence is not clear.
Indian man: (spluttering) ...naturally, but listen what I say.
Prabhupada: So, the atma, that is stated in the Bhagavata, antavanta ime deha nityasyoktah saririnah [Bg. 2.18]. Nityasyoktah, nityasyoktah, saririnah. Saririnah means the soul who possesses this body, he is nitya. So, you have to enjoy or suffer the reaction of your activities. Karmana daiva-netrena [SB 3.31.1]. You have got a type of body on account of your activities.
Indian man: But how atma... Suppose I am doing some sins? So how atma can be controlling. Suffering...
Prabhupada: You are doing sin, you have to control.
Kirtanananda: What does the Lord mean in Bhagavad-gita when He says that only the modes of material nature act...
Prabhupada: You are committing sinful life, so you have to rectify yourself.
Indian man: He is the controller of my body, atma is the controller of my...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Indian man: So if I am doing sins, you mean to say, that atma is doing because that is his responsibility.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Indian man: If manager does..., if the worker does something wrong, the manager is indirectly responsible.
Prabhupada: No, no, no. Why do you say manager? You are doing...
Indian man: Yes, but suppose...
Prabhupada: No "I suppose." That is not suppose. You are doing sinful activities or pious activities. It is you, atma, jivatma.
Indian man: So that means jivatma, he is...
Prabhupada: Responsible...
Indian man: ...responsible for any good or bad deeds for my life?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Indian man: Because he's controller of the body. So he's responsible.
Prabhupada: Yes. Bodies only means, suppose you are motorcar, you are driving this way or that way, the motorcar is not driving you. You are driving the motorcar.
Indian man: Huh huh.
Kirtanananda: What does it mean in the Gita, Prabhupada, when Krsna says only the modes of material nature are acting?
Prabhupada: Material nature means because you are in diseased condition in this material world, therefore according to the infection. Just like you have got body, and he has got body. You are suffering from typhoid; he is suffering from smallpox. So you have contaminated the typhoid germs, and he has contaminated smallpox. So the, this body is after all material body, so there is infection of material nature, tri-gunatmaka. Therefore you have to transcend this position of tri-gunatmaka. Then you are cured.
mam ca yo 'vyabhicarena
bhakti-yogena sevate
sa gunan samatityaitan
braham-bhuyaya kalpate
 [Bg. 14.26]
If you transcend the infection of the three modes of material nature, then you are safe. So long you do not transcend, just like so long we infect some disease, then you must suffer. But if you don't infect, you'll not suffer. That is up to you. There is disease, cholera disease; why shall I go there? Why shall I infect my body in that way? That is up to you. If you don't take precaution, then you will suffer. Jaya.
Sridhara: The soul is pure, part and parcel of Krsna...
Prabhupada: Yes, but he is covered by the material body. The material body is infected by the modes of material nature. Therefore, although he is pure, he is subjected. Just like when there is motor accident, you are separate from the motor, but you have to suffer. Everyone knows that I am separate from the motorcar, but why I am suffering? Because you have got bad car, you must suffer.
Sridhara: That may be because I'm an imperfect driver.
Prabhupada: So you are imperfect; therefore this movement is to make you perfect. If you are not imperfect, then why the movement is there? To make you perfect. Samsiddhim paramam gatah. Mam upetya kaunteya duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15]. So long you are imperfect, you must suffer in this material world. And as soon as you become perfect, you go back to home, back to.... Because you are imperfect, therefore this movement is necessary. Medicine is there for the patient, not for the person in perfect health. Mudho' yam nabhijanati mam eva param avyayam [Bg. 7.25]. These rascals they do not know Krsna; therefore the Krsna consciousness movement is necessary. Para upakara. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says para upa, para upakara. You know yourself what is Krsna, and distribute this knowledge. That is wanted. That is entrusted to the Indians.
bharata bhumite manusya janma hoila jara
janma sarthaka kari kara para upakara
 [Cc. Adi 9.41]
This is wanted.
Sridhara: So the soul is the doer and the nondoer of the activities, sinful activities, or, as the soul is pure, so...
Prabhupada: Yes. Just like when you are condemned to death by the judgment of the high-court, so who is the doer, the high-court judge, or you? Huh? Is the high-court judge your enemy, that he has condemned you to death? He has given the judgment; you cannot say he is the doer. You are the doer. So atma and Paramatma. You do, and Paramatma gives judgment. Daiva-netrena. By the superior judgment.
Lokanatha: But it is said all the actions are carried out by the three modes of material nature, and...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Lokanatha: ...the atma is just the non-doer. Atma doesn't do anything.
Prabhupada: No, no. He has put himself to the shelter of material nature. As soon as you come to India or you come to some other country, you must be under the laws of that country. So why do you come here? Krsna bhuliya jiva bhagavan sa kari. You have come to the material world to enjoy, so you must suffer also.
Kirtanananda: We've seen the example used, Prabhupada, that just like a man, if he goes to sleep at night and he dreams that he has committed some murder or some...
Prabhupada: So why does he dream?
Kirtanananda: ...he enjoys or suffers the activities, but actually he is...
Prabhupada: Yes, but why he dreams like that? One is dreaming like that, another is dreaming a different way. That is due to his practice. (aside:) Hare Krsna.
Sridhara: People say then that the soul must be impure. If the soul can, not...
Prabhupada: Impure in this sense: that he has come in touch with the impure. And if he becomes untouched with the impure, then he is no more impure. That is described in Bhagavad-gita,
mam ca yo 'vyabhicarena
bhakti-yogena sevate
sa gunan samatityaitan
brahma-bhuyaya kalpate
 [Bg. 14.26]
Immediately he becomes pure. Krsna says,
sarva-dharman parityajya
mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo
moksayisyami...
 [Bg. 18.66]
"I shall make you immediately pure." Why don't you do that? You want to remain impure, so you must suffer.
Kirtanananda: Therefore everything is situated on desire.
Prabhupada: Huh? Yes. We are desiring to enjoy the sense enjoyment of this material world, then you remain impure. So long you shall desire sense enjoy.... Therefore bhakti means anyabhilasita-sunyam [Brs. 1.1.11], make zero all your desires, material desires. Desire cannot be zero. Purify your desires. Desire how to serve Krsna. Then it is pure. (aside:) Hare Krsna. You singing daily in the morning, ara na koriho mane asa. Do you know the meaning?
Devotee: "No other desires."
Prabhupada: Yes. Ara na.... guru mukha padma vakhya cittete koriya aikya ara na korioa mane asa. That is purification. A guru says something, and you do something else, then you are desiring something, then you are not pure. Therefore daily you are saying, ara na koriho mane asa. Don't desire anything. Then you remain pure. As soon as you decide that "I shall serve only Krsna," you become pure, immediately. Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami [Bg. 18.66]. You are delivered from all sinful reactions, then how you are impure? You keep that position, pure position, then your life is successful. Ara na koriho... And if you plan something (chuckles) "I am very expert in planning; I shall do this, I shall do that, not serve Krsna," then you remain impure.
Indian man (2): Prabhupada, (Hindi)
Prabhupada: [break] ...ananya-bhak, that is required. Ara-na koriho mane.. ananya-bhak, no diversion of attention.
Indian man (3): [break] ...you see, I am now trying to learn (indistinct) something, and I find that by doing bhakti, ah, what you call puja, saguna puja, whenever I come to your place, instead of seeing the Krsna murti, I always see the lingam, pure lingam. Why this phenomena going on?
Prabhupada: You are a great devotee of Lord Siva, so that's all right.
Indian man (3): I have already, seeing the.... My parents may be doing, I have not done much except knowing only a few lines of the...
Prabhupada: That's all right. You remain a devotee of Lord Siva. There is no harm.
Indian man (3): And when I have been doing some other saguna puja, another is seen always.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Indian man (3): Suppose I am doing...
Prabhupada: Many, many...
Indian man (3): ...Sankara pure puja then I am seeing er, Devi.... Like that it is happening. Secondly, so how to go to nirguna state? That is my difficulty.
Prabhupada: Sa gunan sama...
Indian man (3): And whenever I am praying with closed eyes, I see something, but with opened eyes I don't see anything.
Prabhupada: That is given in the Bhagavad-gita. That you have to.... Sa gunan samatityaitan [Bg. 14.26]. Sa gunan. Samatitya. So you have to adopt this means, then you will.
Indian man (3): How to from sa guna I do not know.
Prabhupada: Mam ca yo' vyabhicarena bhakti-yogena ya sevate [Bg. 14.26].
Indian man (3): Sanskrit, I don't know much Sanskrit.
Prabhupada: Anyone who worships Krsna, avyabhicarena, without any change, he becomes nirguna.
Indian man (3): So saguna is necessary for going to nirguna?
Prabhupada: Huh?
Indian man (3): Saguna is...
Prabhupada: No, not necessary. But if you don't worship unflinchingly Krsna, then you remain in the saguna platform.
Indian man (3): Hm, I see.
Prabhupada: Here it is clearly said, sa gunan samatityaitan brahma-bhuyaya kalpate [Bg. 14.26]. So you have to adopt the means; then you become nirguna. And if you don't adopt, then you remain saguna.
Indian man (3): Yes, and I can come to you and just, you explain me what is the way...
Prabhupada: (aside:) Hare Krsna. Jaya. Sa gunan samatityaitan [Bg. 14.26]. Sagun.. saguna...
Indian man (3): Which sloka from Gita, it is from Gita? Bhagavad-gita?
Prabhupada: Yes, it is ninth chapter.
Indian man (3): Then I'll read it again and see if whether I can follow something. Thank you.
Prabhupada: Krsna clearly says, sa gunan, sa gunan samatitya, sama upena titya, perfectly transcending, this is the process.
Indian man (3): I see. We cannot do with the closed eyes.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Indian man (3): With open eyes, why we cannot do the prayers and the bhakti-yoga? What is the...
Prabhupada: For the disturbed mind. Those who are settled up, they can see always, open or closed. Premanjanacchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santah sadaiva hrdayesu viloka. One who has attained that stage, love of God, he can see every, every moment. When you love somebody, a small child, don't you see always, huh? Don't you see? Huh? When you see the child's little sock, immediately you see the child. The shoes, immediately you see the child. Why? Because you are in love with the child. So that stage you have to come, in love with God, then you will see always, twenty-four hours, sadaiva. Sadaiva means twenty-four hours. You see, and you always remain in nirguna stage, and always see.
Indian man (3): But in that case, sir, material duties, they are forgotten.
Prabhupada: No.
Indian man (3): Then how can you avoid that, because conflict takes place.
Prabhupada: No, it will be, there will be no more material duty. When you wash the shoes of your son, that is love, that is not a shoe washer; you don't remain a shoe washer. You remain in love with your child. Hm? A mother takes care of the child, washes, when he passes stool, that does not mean she becomes matharani (sweeper woman). Matharani is material. But when the mother out of love washes the child, she is not matharani, she is Radharani. (everyone laughs) And if you conclude, "Ah, she is washing the stool of the son. She is matharani," that is your mistake. She remains Radharani. Just like mother Yasoda is binding Krsna, that does not mean that His supremacy is lost. The mother Yasoda is binding; He still remains the supreme. Therefore mother Yasoda became exhausted to try to bind Him. (laughs) And when Krsna saw that "My mother is perspiring now, she is exhausted," "All right, let Me agree to be bound up by her." (pause) That's not a fact, otherwise how Krsna says, "Anyone who is engaged in My devotional service, sa gunan samatityaitan brahma-bhuyaya kalpate [Bg. 14.26]." So this is a mistake to say that devotional service is saguna. (indistinct) Huh? These are one gentleman came to talk with me?
Saurabha: About the apartment?
Prabhupada: Yes. (end)

Sex Propaganda Can't Stop Death

Vrndavana, September 6, 1975

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: Brahmacarya. Brahmacarya means completely cessation from sex life. This is brahmacarya. Tapasya begins, austerity. This is the greatest austerity, to cease sex. Tapasa brahmacarya. Our Vedic civilization, the boys are trained how to become brahmacari from the very beginning of life.Indian: (Hindi)
Prabhupada: Ha. [break] ... putraka yena suddhyet sattva. Our existentional position should be purified. How? Tapo, by tapasya. Tapo divyam putraka yena suddhyet sattva [SB 5.5.1]. "And we are enjoying life. Why we should undergo tapasya?" And you are enjoying, but you are not enjoying; you are suffering. Even if you think you are enjoying, there are so many sufferings. That the foolish people, they do not know. Just like a healthy man, he thinks, "I am enjoying," but he does not see that even he is now healthy, he will be an old man, he will be attacked with disease, he will die, and still he thinks, "I am healthy." Janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi-duhkha-dosanudarsanam [Bg. 13.9]. Therefore the intelligent man will see that "Where is my enjoyment if I am going to die? I don't want to die, but I am going to die." That is sure, as sure as anything. And still the rascal will think that "I am happy." He will become old man, he will be attacked with disease, and still he is thinking that he is happy. Apart from this, there are so many other sufferings, but he thinks that he is happy. And that happiness is centered around sex. That's all. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham [SB 7.9.45]. Their only happiness is sex. Therefore in the Western countries they are simply trying to increase the sex enjoyment. That's all. Is it not?
Devotees: Yes.
Prabhupada: The whole civilization is based on how to enjoy sex very nicely. This is their basic principle of civilization.
Brahmananda: Always on the best-seller charts of the books there is always some book about how to enjoy sex.
Prabhupada: Just see. There are books here also, Kama-sastra. So sex enjoyment also you cannot enjoy unlimitedly. Then you will become impotent. Then you will have to call your wife as "mother," as some saintly person did. He was indulging in sex in his young age, and when he was married he saw himself impotent, and therefore he invented some way that "I have realized Brahman. I can call my wife also 'mother.' " And he became famous -- "Oh, he is so advanced. He has learned how to..." But in the history we will not find this. Even Vyasadeva had his wife, but he never said his wife, "mother."
Brahmananda: Actually you're supposed to see other women as mother.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Brahmananda: But not one's own wife.
Prabhupada: No. Para-daresu. Matravat para-daresu. That is the injunction of the sas... Other's wife. Not that "Oh, my wife is also my mother." Just see. This lunacy is going on, and this lunatic man is taken as incarnation of God. This is going on. This homosex propaganda is another side of impotency. So that is natural. If you enjoy too much, then you become impotent.
Brahmananda: They are trying to make that more and more accepted in America, homosex.
Prabhupada: Yes. The churches accept. It is already law.
Nitai: This women's liberation movement, the leaders are also homosexual. They're lesbians.
Prabhupada: (laughs) Just see. Hare Krsna. The whole world is on the verge of ruination. Kali-yuga. [break]
Brahmananda: ...become ruined. The world is on the verge of ruination, but it doesn't become ruined; so therefore they think, "Oh, it doesn't matter. We can go on."
Prabhupada: They do not know what is the meaning of ruination. [break] ...so many problems. Still it is not on the verge of ruination?
Brahmananda: It's on the verge.
Prabhupada: That's all right. But why you are very much disturbed with so many problems?
Dhananjaya : They always take the brighter side.
Prabhupada: No. They are discussing, "There will be no more petrol. There will be no more this, no more that."
Brahmananda: So they are thinking, "Well, then we'll get the sun power. Then we'll get this and we'll get that."
Prabhupada: Well, that is the problem. It is not that "Theoretically here is a problem. I will solve it like this. I'll..." That is not solution of problem. Problem is there. When you actually make solution, then... This is madness, theorizing, "We shall solve the problem like this." They are wasting public money in so many ways. [break] They do not know what is real problem. The real problem is presented by Krsna: janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi [Bg. 13.9]. That they do not care, although they do not want it. That's a fact. It is a problem because they do not want it. But they do not take it as serious problem. This is foolishness.
Brahmananda: President Ford, he was almost killed.
Prabhupada: Accha? What about?
Brahmananda: Some woman... He was mingling in the crowd for the election, and some woman came up to him. She was two feet away from him, and she took out of her purse a loaded pistol, and she was to go like this, and then she was...
Prabhupada: Captured.
Brahmananda: Yes.
Nayanabhirama: He was going to shake her hand.
Prabhupada: Just see.
Brahmananda: So the president said, "Oh, this is simply a distraction." He was trying to say it wasn't important.
Prabhupada: What was the cause?
Brahmananda: She is a member of a group, a fanatical group in California. I don't know what... The Manson group? Charles Manson? Who is that group? This man killed about six people.
Prabhupada: Prominent.
Brahmananda: And I think this man has many wives. He has about two dozen wives. These are all his wives. He's in jail now. Life sentence. [break]
Prabhupada: There is no problem.
Brahmananda: Yes. He was saying, "Oh, it's just a distraction." [break]
Prabhupada: ...the President's life is not safe, and there is no problem. What to speak of others.
Dhananjaya: An intelligent man will go completely insane because he can't solve the problems...
Prabhupada: The solution is there.
Dhananjaya: ...without referring to the Vedic philosophy.
Prabhupada: The solution is there. Take it. Take Krsna consciousness.
Dhananjaya: They're so much implicated by sex life.
Prabhupada: Yes. Gradually they'll become ... understand that this is not good. Therefore grhastha asrama is allowed under rules and regulation. The purpose is to restrict sex life.
Brahmananda: The wife of the President, she recently said that sex life before marriage is good because it will reduce the divorce rate.
Prabhupada: Yes. If everyone is prostitute then where is the question of divorce? (laughter)
Nitai: There's also no question of marriage.
Prabhupada: Yes. And that is going on. (end)

Scientists Controlling Nature"

Chicago, July 4, 1975

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Tamala Krsna: We've been reading in the Caitanya-caritamrta, Madhya-lila, that, there's a statement that when Caitanya Mahaprabhu took prasadam at the house of Advaita Acarya, there's a verse quoted from the Srimad-Bhagavatam that a sannyasi should not leave anything, no... When he's taking his meals he should not leave anything on the plate. But sometimes we have heard in the past that a sannyasi should leave something on the plate.Prabhupada: No. Sometimes the guru leaves some remnant to be taken by the disciple. That is meant for the disciple. Ordinarily they should not. [break] ...from the other side of the lakes?
Brahmananda: It's Canada.
Prabhupada: Canada, oh.
Sri Govinda: Actually, I think it is Michigan. It is another state in the United States. Then to the north is Canada. [break]
Satsvarupa: One temple, St. Louis temple, has come to this festival, and they brought with them their installed Deities which are Gaura-Nitai. I wasn't sure that was right of them to do that. And They're now on the altar of the Chicago temple, but the Deities are not in the St. Louis temple. Gaura...
Prabhupada: That is closed?
Satsvarupa: They left one man there. Better to keep the temple open with the Deities there or can the...?
Prabhupada: No, no. When there is Deity, it must be taken care of.
Satsvarupa: They should not be transported to another temple?
Prabhupada: No, no harm.
Satsvarupa: May the temple be only one man left?
Prabhupada: Why, if there is no Deity, what is the use of keeping one man? [break] ...is meant for Deity, not for man. [break]
Visnujana: ...Damodara here for the festival. Is it all right for Them to go on Lord Jagannatha's altar while He is gone?
Prabhupada: Hmm?
Visnujana: Is it all right to put the Deities on the altar in the temple, on Lord Jagannatha's altar while He's gone?
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] ...private houses or...?
Bhavananda: Some of them are university and some are private. [break]
Prabhupada: ...the news we have got the "no objection" certificate.
Tamala Krsna: Really? For the temple or the...
Prabhupada: Bombay.
Tamala Krsna: That's for a skyscraper building or for the temple?
Prabhupada: Temple. The chief minister has sanctioned. He is very nice man.
Tamala Krsna: Nayika(?)?
Prabhupada: No, no, Nayika was a rogue.
Tamala Krsna: A new one.
Prabhupada: Yes, he is Chyavan?
Tamala Krsna: So now we can build two towers and a temple.
Prabhupada: Now bring money.
Tamala Krsna: Prabhupada, what is the plan? To send money or books?
Prabhupada: No, money. [break]
Tamala Krsna: ...He says a devotee is never vanquished, Prabhupada. Just see. [break]
Prabhupada: ...we get so much description of the sky and planets, but they had no observatory. How it was possible? [break] ...they can see with the observatory? (laughs) [break]
Visnujana: ...see it themselves, Prabhupada. They don't want to just read it in books, they say.
Prabhupada: No, what they will see? That is my question. With these limited eyes?
Satsvarupa: But they say that even what they can't see, it's more of the same.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Satsvarupa: They've made some conclusion by their mathematics as to what they can see. Whatever they can't see, it's still more of the same, material sky and planets. There's nothing beyond it.
Prabhupada: Then seeing and not seeing, the same thing? That is, means you see or not see... Is that mean, that seeing or not seeing? This is contradictory. Either you see or you don't see. These are two things. (laughter) But what is this "I see, I don't see"?
Visnujana: For that, they spend millions of dollars on a telescope.
Prabhupada: And just see. That which is impossible, they are trying for that. Punah punas carvita-carvananam [SB 7.5.30], chewing the chewed, that's all. When your senses are imperfect, then what you will see? Whatever you see, that is imperfect. So what is the meaning of seeing? Therefore our seeing is sastra-caksusat: "We should see through the authorized scriptures." That is our... You will see in the description of Sukadeva Gosvami of the whole universe, conclusion, Sukadeva Gosvami, "So far I have described as I have heard." He never says, "As I have seen." This is required. [break] ...that we believe in the creation. And others also, just like Christians, they also believe God created. But who has seen God is creating? Who has seen? Simply hear from God. He says, "I have created." That's all. But if you challenge, "I have not seen that You have created; neither I have seen You," then how can you believe? God says, "I have created," so those who are God believers, they will accept that. So what is the use of seeing again, observatory? We trust in God, but don't trust in His word. This is going on. You write in America, "We trust in God," but don't trust in His word. (laughs) Just see. If God you trust, then whatever God says, you believe. "No, that we cannot do." This is the (indistinct). [break]
Visnujana: Krsna is so opulent, why did He appear in the form of Lord Caitanya in such a poor village atmosphere?
Prabhupada: That is His opulence. Here the material man, if he is rich man, he cannot become a poor man. That means he is lacking that opulence. [break] ...opulence. Anor aniyan mahato mahiyan. He can become the bigger than the biggest and the smaller than the smallest. That is opulence. You cannot manufacture a mosquito. You can manufacture a 747, but manufacture a mosquito, then we shall know your science. (laughter) ...the same machine. Otherwise how it is flying? [break] ...seen, so imperfect you are, that what are the machine there? And you are proud of seeing, nonsense. See the machine, where it is there, how the mosquito is flying.
Tamala Krsna: And one mosquito can produce many mosquitos.
Prabhupada: Yes. Everything is there complete.
Brahmananda: It doesn't crash either.
Prabhupada: No. (laughter) And still, these rascals, believing their eyes. What is the meaning of your eyes? You see, study mosquito. Not only mosquito, you will find at night I see a small insect, less than the magnitude of full stop. (Makes insect sound:) "Gu, gu, gu, gu." The same machine is there. Now see what is the machine there if you have such eyes. What is their answer? "In future." Just see. In future they will be able. Yes. [break]
Brahmananda: ...will say that nature has created such a...
Prabhupada: Then nature is greater than you. Then you are rascal. He knows, You have to accept, somebody is greater than you. He knows, you do not know. Learn from him.
Brahmananda: Well, they say that they can control nature.
Prabhupada: Again foolishness. That irritates me. When they speak like that, rascal, that irritates me. (laughter) Therefore I simply call them rascal. [break] Harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-gunah. They are claiming very, very, big man, but as soon as we see that he is not a devotee of Krsna, we reject, "He is a foolish." [break] There is... That is a fact, one case was going on, and the judge was dozing, like that. So his clerk warned, "You are dozing. Big, big lawyers, they are talking." "So let these rascals go on talking. I have already concluded my..., (laughter) what judgment I shall give. Let them..." (laughs) So our is like that. We don't hear these rascals. Our judgment is already there. They are rascals. That's all. Let them talk whole day and night. The judge said to the clerk that "I have already made my judgment, so let these foolish men go on talking." [break] ...minister of Orissa, he has promised a land in Jagannatha Puri. So if we get that land, is it not possible to construct another Jagannatha temple? You'll earn the American money here.
Tamala Krsna: If they won't let us into that Jagannatha Puri, we have to make another one.
Prabhupada: Yes. Jagannatha will come to our temple. Yes. [break] ...selling prasadam, we shall distribute free. [break] ...comes, take prasadam. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Gopala Krsna: Calcutta had called me up this morning. They are expecting about two lakhs' people in Mayapur today and tomorrow. There's a big festival, and Jayapataka Maharaja spoke to me also. He's going to come here next Wednesday.Prabhupada: Two lakhs' people?
Gopala Krsna: During the next three, four day festival...
Prabhupada: What is that festival?
Gopala Krsna: It's... It happens every year at this time.
Prabhupada: What is this time?
Gopala Krsna: [break] Bengali Gitar Gan is ready and Jayapataka Swami is taking delivery of it in the morning.
Prabhupada: [break] Copies. [break] They could not conclude when the battle of Kuruksetra was fought.
Gopala Krsna: They are speculating, though. There is one school which says it wasn't fought in Kuruksetra.
Prabhupada: As soon as there will be one school and other school, that means all of them are rascals. Just like the sun rises from this side. There cannot be two schools. If somebody says, "No, no. Sun rises from this side," if that is school, he's a fool. Sun rises from the eastern side. That's all. That is knowledge. If somebody says, "No, sometimes in the western side, sometimes in the northern side," is that any value? So as soon as there will be many schools, that means the conclusion is not like that.
Yasomatinandana: Someone was telling me, and I was telling that if somebody is not following the particular characteristic of a saintly person mentioned in the sastra, they cannot be accepted as a sadhu. So he was trying to prove that some sadhus, so-called, who eat meat, and who are drinking, they were actually great paramahamsas. And then I... He said that because in the previous ages there is mention of... In the sastras there is mention that there were many rsis and munis who were eating meat.
Prabhupada: He knows them. He is such a rascal that he knows only and nobody knows. That is the verdict of this Ramakrishna Mission.
Yasomatinandana: They say that they would... These rsis would kill one elephant or something like that, and they would live on him for whole year.
Prabhupada: Where is that information? Where he got this information? You did not challenge?
Yasomatinandana: Well, I said that that muni must be just like the rsis and munis you are talking about now.
Prabhupada: We don't find any such thing. In this way they have ruined Indian culture by misquoting, by misleading.
Yasomatinandana: And he admitted that Vivekananda smoked ganja and he was eating meat.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Yasomatinandana: But for such a soul, he said, there is no conditioning like that. Then, when you quote any verse from Bhagavad-gita contrary to such statement, immediately he would say, "Well, Bhagavad-gita is not the only scripture."
Prabhupada: [break] ...very nicely, without any fail. Dharmah svanusthitah pumsam [SB 1.2.8]. But if he does not become Krsna conscious, then where is the profit? It is simply waste of time and energy. srama eva hi kevalam. Anything, whatever it may be, it doesn't matter. Ye krsna tattva vetta... If he knows the science of Krsna, then he is guru. Ye krsna tattva vetta sei guru haya. (Hindi)
Yasomatinandana: [break] ...people, they are nice pious people, and they have accepted some of these gymnastic people as their guru. So they say, "Oh, our guruji is here. We have to go see our guruji," this, that. So how should we speak to them or how should we preach to them?
Prabhupada: That you cannot do immediately unless he understands your philosophy. Param drstva nivartate [Bg. 9.59]. Unless they understand that this philosophy is better than that, how he can give it up?
Yasomatinandana: Sometimes they even say that "You have your guru and I have my guru. It's all the same thing."
Prabhupada: Yes, and a thief has also a guru. Then that guru is also the same thing. (Hindi) Here guru means tasmad gurum prapadyeta jijnasur sreya uttaman [SB 11.3.21]. (Hindi) Napnuvanti mahatmanam samsiddhim paramam gatah.
Yasomatinandana: Isn't there some conditioning between the guru and sisya, that "The guru should be like this and a sisya should be like this"?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Yasomatinandana: Not that anybody can say, "I am sisya," and not anybody can say, "I am guru."
Prabhupada: Samsara-dava. You are singing daily. Samsara-davanala-lidha-loka-tranaya karunya-ghanaghanatvam **. One who can deliver from this entanglement of material, miserable condition of life, he is guru. That is the first definition of guru. Samsara-davanala-lidha-loka-tranaya karunya-ghanaghanatvam, praptasya kalyana -- one who has obtained this qualification -- vande guroh sri caranara..., he is guru **.
Yasomatinandana: 'Cause nowadays...
Prabhupada: Nowadays... Nowadays let them talk all nonsense. But this is the definition of guru. "Nowadays the sun is rising on the western side." If somebody says like that, who is going to accept it? "Nowadays." There is no question of "nowadays" and "formerly." The truth is truth always. Hare Krsna. That is Absolute Truth. Jaya.
Yasomatinandana: So many yajnas and siddhis and everything going on, everywhere you see. It's so hard...
Prabhupada: Yajnaih sankirtanaih prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah [SB 11.5.32]. Those who are very intelligent, those whose brain clear, they, yajnaih sankirtanaih prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah.
ye yad dhyayato visnum
tretayam yajato makhaih
dvapare paricaryayam
kalau tad dhari-kirtanat
What yajnas they will perform? Not possible. Where is the yajnic brahmana? [break] "Don't talk. I am very busy." (laughter) [break] ...greatest contribution?
Brahmananda: "The greatest contribution of the Hare Krsna movement is its authorized translations of Vedic literature." Oh, "The greatest contribution to scholars." No. "The greatest contribution of the Hare Krsna movement is that it is providing to scholars authorized translations of these Vedic literatures."
Prabhupada: That is the remark of a very big professor.
Devotee (3): Srila Prabhupada, how do we support our challenge that they have not gone to the moon?
Prabhupada: Hm?
Devotee (3): How do we support our challenge to the scientists that they have not actually gone to the moon?
Prabhupada: First proof is that they say that there is no life. That is foolishness. There is life. Because we find everywhere life, why not in the moon planet? And there are many others. The first challenge is this.
Devotee (3): They say that they have not seen the life, though.
Prabhupada: But what you can see, rascal? Therefore we say you are rascals. Why do you believe your eyes? You cannot see so many things. We don't find any living entity in the ocean. Does it mean there is no living entity? So what is the value of your seeing? That is the defect. They believe in too much their eyes. Although eyes are... Every sense is imperfect. You can see here: "Oh, we don't find anything. It is all zero." Does it mean the sky is zero? There are millions of planets and millions of living entities. So that is their rascaldom. They think that they are perfect. Whatever they see, that is perfect. That is their mistake. If I say, "No, there is no life. I cannot see," is that very good statement? And in the..., externally you don't find any living entity, but is it void of living entities? Then why shall I assert that "There is no living... I cannot see"? Is that very good proposal? Therefore they are rascals. There cannot be any place within this universe which is without life. There cannot be. We see there is life even within sand. How you can say there is no life? "Because I cannot see." What is this argument? What you are? You are a rascal. Because you cannot see, therefore we have to accept? First of all we say you are rascal. And if he says that "I cannot see," is it to be accepted? And the example is there. "I cannot see any life. It is simply water." But there are millions and trillions of life, big, big fish. Where is your perfection of seeing?
Devotee (3): Prabhupada? Why are the big authorities, like the government people...?
Prabhupada: Nobody is authority. That is our first assertion. Nobody is authority. Therefore we have placed Krsna consciousness. Krsna is only authority. All rascals. That is our first assertion-(aside:) Good morning -- that except Krsna there is no authority. And one who follows Krsna, he is authority.
Devotee (3): Why are the so-called scientists trying to make the common people believe that...
Prabhupada: Because they are so-called scientists. You have already explained. Why you are asking? (laughter) You have already explained, "so-called scientists." That's all. They are not scientists; they are so-called scientists.
Devotee (3): Why do they want to fool the people?
Prabhupada: Because you are fool. Because you are fool, therefore you become befooled. We do not become befooled by their words. You are fool; you will be befooled. If you want to remain fool, then you will be befooled. And if you become intelligent, then you will not be befooled. They can befool when there are many fools. If there is no fool they cannot befool. So you follow this?
Devotee (3): Yes.
Prabhupada: Jaya.
Devotee (3): The scientists, they are also fools.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Devotee (3): The scientists are also fools.
Prabhupada: Yes. Mudha. That is our definition in the Bhagavad-gita. Na mam duskrtino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah [Bg. 7.15]. So much educated? mayayapahrta-jnana asuram-bhavam asritah. Their knowledge has no value. The maya has taken away everything.
Indian man (4): (Hindi)
Prabhupada: mayayapahrta jnana. Hare Krsna.
Indian man (4): Honor...
Prabhupada: Thank you very much. Unless one understands Krsna... Vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyah [Bg. 15.15]. Veda means knowledge. So all kinds of knowledge, they are aiming at the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So if one does not understand what is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then mayayapahrta-jnana -- he has no knowledge. Knowledge means ultimately he must know what is God. That is knowledge. Ye krsna tattva vetta sei guru haya. Anyone who knows Krsna, he becomes guru. Otherwise not. The first test is you may be scientist, philosopher, educationist, whatever you may be, but ask him, "Do you know Krsna?" If he says, "No," then he is a fool. That's all. This is the test. (chuckles) Hare Krsna. So Ambarisa Maharaja, do you agree?
Ambarisa: Yes. It's a good test.
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] Goldsmith, they take a stone, black stone. Do you know? And they rub the gold on the stone, and they can immediately say whether it is gold or not. So our, that stone, is Krsna. If anyone knows Krsna, then it is gold. (laughter)
Devotee (3): Haribol! Jaya Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: Otherwise it is bogus.
Indian man (5): It is very good.
Prabhupada: Ah, yes. Formerly these goldsmith boys, their father simply taught how to test gold. And as soon as he learns, he opens a shop and he earns thousands and thousands of rupees. No education. Simply by...
Yasomatinandana: Yes. Even today the jewelers' sons, they are expert in knowing diamonds and they make millions of rupees.
Indian man (6): (Hindi)
Prabhupada: This is Indian old fashion. They simply know how to test jewels and gold. That's all. One knowledge makes him rich.
vyavasayatmika buddhir
ekeha kuru-nandana
bahu-sakha hy anantas ca
buddhayo 'vyavasayinam
 [Bg. 2.41]
Avyavasayinam bahu-sakha. And vyavasayayinam-one. From practical point of view, from business point of view also, I started this Krsna conscious business with forty rupees. Now we have forty crores. Who has got such business success? (laughter) Bring anyone. Within ten years. And here is Ambarisa Maharaja. He is ready to give us any money, any amount of money, Ambarisa Maharaja, yes, whole Ford Company. (laughter) So who has got this business? Hare Krsna. Jaya. I think there is no such history in the world, to begin business with forty rupees, and within ten years it becomes forty crores. One cannot imagine even.
Yasomatinandana: Yes.
Prabhupada: (Hindi) "You are servant, and wherefrom you will get twelve lakhs of rupees within three years? You cannot get it." (Hindi) Busy. Hare Krsna. [break] Learn from dog one lesson. They are very faithful to the master, very faithful. [break] ...do not see anything now in the sky. Does it mean it is vacant? So what is the value of your seeing?
Brahmananda: There's a philosophy that says that if a tree falls down in a forest and I am not there to see it, then it hasn't happened.
Prabhupada: There is philosophy?
Brahmananda: :Yes.
Prabhupada: So what is their logic? Hm?
Gopala Krsna: Want to see everything with their own eyes.
Giriraja: :They think the existence of the tree is dependent on their sense perception.
Prabhupada: Gladstone or what, that poet? "Full many flowers' gloss unseen." Therefore there is no flower? "Full many flowers' gloss unseen." This is foolish philosophy. Now this plane is going. After half an hour it will not be seen. Does it mean it is finished? (laughter) There is no more?
Indian man (7): But also in the sky we can see something. I can see many things. I can see something. It is not vacant space. Only thing I don't know what it is.
Prabhupada: Then you cannot see the stars. Can you see the stars now?
Indian man (7): No.
Prabhupada: Then can you say there is no star? Then? That means what you cannot see, that is not final. Therefore our Vedic instruction is sastra caksusat: You should see through the sastra, not you these useless eyes. These are useless. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet [MU 1.2.12]. In order to know perfectly, one should go to the guru. And Bhagavad-gita has said,
tad viddhi pranipatena
pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti tad jnanam
jnaninas tattva-darsinah
 [Bg. 4.34]
"One who has seen, go there and learn it." That is the injunction. Don't try to see yourself. That is foolishness. This very word is used, tattva-darsinah, "one who has seen." You have to go there and see through his eyes, through his instruction. That is real seeing.
Devotee (5): :They're paying you respects, Srila Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: Hm? Oh. Hare Krsna. Jaya.
Yasomatinandana: No one has any chance against your philosophy. No one has any chance. Many times people start arguing. Within five or ten minutes they are completely calmed down. And after fifteen minutes, "Because we started arguing, we have learned so much from you."
Prabhupada: That is sane man.
Indian man (8): (Hindi)
Prabhupada: (Hindi) [break]
Dr. Patel: Why I come so early and all that. Shall I say, sir?
Prabhupada: Yes, yes.
Dr. Patel:
prasangam ajaram pasam
atmanah kavayo viduh
sa eva sadhusu krto
moksa-dvaram apavrtam
That is why I come so early. You may explain them, sir.
Prabhupada: No, you explain.
Dr. Patel: It is said in Srimad-Bhagavata that your mind, atmanah prasanga, the sanga. Sanga means attachment.
Prabhupada: Prasangam.
Dr. Patel: Prasanga and sanga, the same.
Prabhupada: No, no. Prakrsta-rupena sanga. Very tight.
Dr. Patel: Sanga. Very tight sanga, very tight attachment of mind is there always.
Prabhupada: Not mind, of the soul.
Dr. Patel: atmanah. Because mind and soul, both are... There is always there, ajara, undying. "But if that attachment is made to a sadhu, that becomes moksa-dvaram apavrtam, that becomes opening of the door of moksa." So I come here to sadhusu krtah.
Prabhupada: Similarly, another sloka is made by Rupa Gosvami. He is praying to Krsna that "As a young man has got attachment for young woman and young woman has got attachment for the young man, similar attachment, when I'll have upon You?" This is very natural to young men and young women, attachment. The whole world is going on on this, what is called, sex attachment. Pumsam striya mithuni-bhavam etad. This material world means they are combined together on the platform of sex. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham [SB 7.9.45]. So that is a very great attachment. So Rupa Gosvami is praying, "When I will have the same attachment for You." Yuvatinam yatha yunoh. [break]
Dr. Patel: ...have something else in Gujarati. Indriya nila... (Gujarati) "The work that you do for satisfaction of the indriyas, (Gujarati)..." That is the bhakti, when you do same action for (Gujarati) God.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is the difference between kama and prema. Kama means worldly attachment, and prema means attachment for God. That's all. In Caitanya-caritamrta it is said, atmendriya-trpti-vancha tara nama kama: "When one desires his own sense gratification, that is called kama." And krsnendriya-trpti-vancha dhare prema nama.
Dr. Patel: That is prema.
Prabhupada: That is prema. "When one wants to satisfy Krsna's senses, that is prema."
Dr. Patel: That is called lust and love.
Prabhupada: This is the difference between lust and love. Just like gopis. It looks like kama but it is prema.
Dr. Patel: They say, sir, that gopis really, they are kama-tosa, and when they touched the sacred feet of Krsna their whole thing was turned into the sacred prema.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Patel: Because, you see, every woman loves the husband, but they don't become gopis because the husband hasn't got that qualities like Krsna. Krsna was above three gunas, so they became tri-gunatita, all gopis. Actually they were motivated by kama, but when they actually had the source of all prema, touched the feet of Krsna, they converted themselves beyond all the three gunas. Because God is not within the maya, He is above it, so anything which was there comes above it.
Prabhupada: [break] ...understanding Krsna's position, if one... Krsna...
Dr. Patel: They are talking nonsense about rasa-lila.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Patel: They are so silly, they don't understand, because they include their own self there. They think that Krsna was just like them, and then they certify(?) themselves with gopis, what they would do with gopis.
Prabhupada: Param bhavam ajanantah. Avajananti mam mudhah [Bg. 9.11]. Param bhavam ajanantah. Param (Hindi) Otherwise it is...
Dr. Patel: It is said that gopis were not foolish. They were very intelligent girls, extremely, because they chose what was to be chosen.
Prabhupada: [break] Eternal companion of Krsna. ananda-cinmaya-rasa pratibhavitabhis tabhir ya eva nija-rupataya kalabhih [Bs. 5.37]. Ananda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhava. The gopis are expansion of Krsna's ananda-cinmaya-rasa pleasure potency. Rupa Gosvami, tyaktva turnam asesa-mandala-pati-srenim sada tucchavat. (Hindi) Tucchavat. But the engagement was gopi-bhava-rasamrtabdhi-lahari. Param drstva nivartate [Bg. 9.59].
Dr. Patel: Yes, that is right sir. Param drstva nivartate. Because the little part of it is remaining there and that never goes away from anyone with God.
Prabhupada: Param drsti, sadhu... (Hindi)
Dr. Patel: Hm. Because they are the agents of param.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Patel: Moksa-dvara apavrtam.
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] Bhakti without jnana can be practiced. So when there is bhakti, automatically there is jnana.
vasudeve bhagavati
bhakti-yogah-prayojitah
janayaty asu vairagyam
jnanam ca yad ahaitukam
 [SB 1.2.7]
Without bhakti there is no jnana. But without jnana bhakti can be practiced.
Devotee: Jaya. Haribol.
Prabhupada: (Hindi) Yes. Otherwise why Krsna says, striya sudras tatha vaisyas te 'pi yanti param gatim. (Hindi) Stri, sudra or vaisya, they are not advanced in knowledge, but Krsna says, striya sudras tatha vaisyas te 'pi yanti param gatim. Mam hi partha vyapasritya ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah [Bg. 9.32]. (Hindi) Vasudeve bhagavati bhakti-yogah-prayojitah [SB 1.2.7]. When he applies bhakti-yoga at the lotus feet of Vasudeva, janayaty asu vairagyam. (Hindi)
Dr. Patel: Jnana means only God is right, Krsna is right, and all this is wrong.
Prabhupada: No, jnana means... Real jnana means "We don't want this material world." That is jnana. That is vairagya because people are attached to this material world, and jnana means completely detached. But he's suffering. On account of this attachment, he's taking repeatedly birth, birth, birth, death, birth, death, birth. So jnana means to get release from this repetition of birth and death.
Dr. Patel: That is because the people have atma-buddhi and kunape tri-dhatuke.
Prabhupada: These rascals talk of jnana, but they keep full attachment for this material world.
Dr. Patel: The kunape tri-dhatuke.
Prabhupada: (Hindi) Jnana-vairagyam. One must feel disgusted in this material world, repetition of birth and death. That is jnana. If one is not disgusted -- he still thinks it is very nice to take birth and die -- then where is jnana? There is no jnana. Caitanya Mahaprabhu's disciples said, ara nare bak. Ara nare bak. (Hindi)
Dr. Patel: No, even, you see, sir, this attraction to the other sex is so strong and great it is very difficult for human beings to get relief.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is to be explained. That is explained, Bhagavad-gita,
daivi hy esa guna-mayi
mama maya duratyaya
mam eva ye prapadyante
mayam etam taran...
 [Bg. 7.14]
This is the way. (aside) Hare Krsna. Jaya.
Dr. Patel: Extremely difficult, that even man like Gautama Buddha had several times come back to see his child and son when he left his house, more than half a dozen times, come and go, come and go. Finally he closed his eyes and ran away. A man of that type. And for ordinary human beings it is very difficult.
Prabhupada: No, it is not difficult. Therefore vanaprastha is recommended, that "Go out of home, remain in the tirtha-sthana and again come. See your children. Again go. Then take sannyasa.
Dr. Patel: Tapering it.
Prabhupada: Yes. (Hindi)
Dr. Patel: That is why devata-loka is not a place from where you can have a release. It is from human life that you can have moksa. Devatas cannot get it.
Prabhupada: No, no, human... Devatas cannot because they have got enough of material enjoyment.
Dr. Patel: The Americans.
Prabhupada: Just like America... (laughs) Americans have not even one per cent. They are many thousands times opulent, the demigods. So it is very difficult. Just like here for a very rich man to take to Krsna consciousness is very difficult. That is a disquali...
bhogaisvarya-prasaktanam
tayapahrta-cetasam
vyavasayatmika-buddhih
samadhau na dhigacchati
 [Bg. 2.44]
(Hindi) Voluntarily sannyasa. All big, big kings in India, voluntarily: "Eh! Give it! Kick it out!" Maharaja Bharata, at the age of twenty-four years, he left everything, young wife, children, kingdom, whole world -- gave it up. This is Indian culture, vairagya. Yudhisthira Maharaja, (Hindi) as soon as the grandson, Maharaja Pariksit, was major: "Take it. We are going." That is the fact. (Hindi) Even Mahatma [Gandhi]. He declared himself mahatma. He is such a mahatma that unless he was killed by Goli(?), he was not leaving anything. He was not prepared. This is mahatma, Kali-yuga ka mahatma. Mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah, bhajanty ananya-manaso [Bg. 9.13]. (Hindi) ...politics, politics, politics. (Hindi) ...nonviolence theory. Krsna said, "You will die by violence. Nonviolence, there cannot be nonviolence. You wanted to prove nonviolence from Bhagavad-gita and criticize Me, Krsna. All right, you die." Hare Krsna.
Dr. Patel: But it is a narrow sight that Krsna was a war-mongerer. Mr. Nehru. He was more...
Prabhupada: Nehru is... What is his value?
Dr. Patel: He said, "Krsna is the greatest war-mongerer."
Prabhupada: Nehru and company are praised... That is stated in the Srimad-Bhag... Sva-vid-varahostra-kharaih samstutah purusah pasuh [SB 2.3.19]. Purusah pasuh. A big animal is being eulogized by small animals. Does it mean a big animal is a human being? He's animal.
Dr. Patel: I think he had not understood exactly.
Prabhupada: What he understood?
Dr. Patel: The second adhyaya, Bhagavad-gita.
Prabhupada: He never knew what is Gita. He plainly...
Yasomatinandana: He was an atheist.
Prabhupada: In America, when he went, somebody requested, "You explain something of Gita." He said, "I do not know much about Gita." He explained. He frankly admitted that "I do not know." His excuse was like that. And he did not know anything. He thought, "Overnight, if I make my country like America, that is success." And he constructed a few skyscraper building, or big, big building in New Delhi, and he thought, "My country is like that." Therefore, when President Eisenhower came, he wanted to see the village. And as soon as he saw the village, the secret was out.
Dr. Patel: No, that man was a dreamer rather than a practical man. Practical man was only Sadar Patel.
Prabhupada: Jaya. [break] Those who are intelligent Indians, they should combine together and present Indian culture as it is. Then the country is glorified. Hare Krsna. [break] ...kari karo paropakara. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission. The whole world is in darkness. Give them some light. First of all you yourself take light; then you distribute. [break] ...letter, that "Now you have got svarajya, you give up this nonsense. Preach Bhagavad-gita. Otherwise you will meet the fate of Mussolini." And actually it was done.
Yasomatinandana: It seems that it is better that he did not preach Bhagavad-gita.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Yasomatinandana: With his understanding.
Prabhupada: Of course, one cannot preach Bhagavad-gita unless he is empowered by Krsna. That is not possible. Krsna sakti vina nahe nama pracarana. It is not possible. (end)

Scientists, Goats, Politicians

Bombay, November 16, 1975

Giriraja: He said, "We don't know where the ingredients came from, but we're sure that there's..."Prabhupada: Then why do you talk nonsense? (laughter) That is another rascal. You do not know. Then what is the use of talking nonsense? You do not know wherefrom these ingredients came. That is nonsense. Our answer is, Krsna reveals, aham sarvasya prabhavo mattah sarvam pravartate [Bg. 10.8]: "The ingredients coming from Me." Now make experiment how the ingredients are coming.
Devotee (1): But they say, "Where did Krsna come from?"
Prabhupada: That is Krsna. That is Krsna. Go to... By and by, you go to Krsna, and when you don't find Krsna's cause, that is Krsna. Anadir adih. He is anadi, but He is adi. That is Krsna.
Devotee (1): They say the original ingredients for the explosion, then, according to your definition, is Krsna.
Prabhupada: No, no.
Dr. Patel: You should never think like that.
Prabhupada: Krsna is the cause of all causes, sarva-karana-karanam [Bs. 5.1]. But He has no karana.
Dr. Patel: This is adi-prasna. Adi-prasna. Ma pracasva. Adi-prasna
Prabhupada: No, no. He is, after all, a student here. That... This is Krsna, that you go... Just like you are caused by your father. Your father is caused by your grandfather, his father, his father, his father, his father. In this way, if you go to Krsna, then He has no father, and that is Krsna. So long you will find another father, then he is not supreme. And when there is no more father, then He is supreme.
Dr. Patel: It is very difficult for us to understand the divya-bhava of Krsna. That is why people are asking these questions because divya-bhava is very difficult to be understood.
Prabhupada: Therefore it is said,
matir na krsne paratah svato va
mitho 'bhipadyeta grha-vratanam
adanta-gobhir visatam tamisram
punah punas carvita-carvananam
 [SB 7.5.30]
Those who are simply chewing the chewed, they cannot understand Krsna. Naisam matis tavad urukramanghrim [SB 7.5.32].
Yasomatinandana: Niskincananam...
Prabhupada: Ah. Niskincananam mahiyasam. It has to be understood from the same thing, tattva-darsinam. Otherwise it is not possible. You cannot speculate. If you say, as Gandhi said, "My Krsna is of my imagination," that kind of knowledge has no value. What you are, your imagination? Matir na krsne paratah svato va. Paratah svato va. Vidya-bhagavatavadhih. If one reads Srimad-Bhagavatam, then he gets the ultimate knowledge of everything. That is the ultimate end, limit of knowledge.
Dr. Patel: Tasya karyam na vidyate.
Prabhupada: Matir na krsne paratah... Nobody can understand Krsna, and they are thinking, "In my imagination, Krsna is like this." What is the value of this imagination?
Dr. Patel: That is why I said, sir, that divya-bhava is very difficult to tell because it is felt by the divya-bhava itself. It cannot be felt by the...
Prabhupada: Yes, and therefore Krsna said, manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye [Bg. 7.3]. Unless one is siddha, there is no question of understanding Krsna. Manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye yatatam api siddhanam [Bg. 7.3]. Even if he is siddha he cannot understand. Out of many of them, one may understand. And they are trying to understand Krsna by imagination. Just see the folly. Krsna said,
manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascid...
 [Bg. 7.3]
And because one is voted some big man-sva-vid-varahostra-kharaih samstutah purusah pasuh [SB 2.3.19] -- he is thinking...(laughter) He is thinking that "I can imagine my Krsna." Hare Krsna. (laughter) [break] ...accept the opinion of a samstutah purusah pasuh. Because public votes are there, although he is a purusah pasuh, we have to accept. So Ambarisa Maharaja, you are feeling all right or not?
Ambarisa: Yes, I am feeling well today.
Prabhupada: You are taking yogurt? Give him kicheri and yogurt.
Harikesa: He won't eat yogurt. Ambarisa: No, I eat it with that  sadhisav, gold(?), mixed in it.
Prabhupada: No, no. Take yogurt with black pepper and salt. Yes.
Ambarisa: Oh, okay.
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna. Jaya. Very good. What is your name?
Indian child: Kirtana.
Prabhupada: Kesan?
Indian child: Kirtana.
Yasomatinandana: Kirtana.
Prabhupada: Kirtana, oh.
Giriraja: Actually, he comes and dances in ecstasy in the temple.
Prabhupada: Very good. Kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc. Adi 17.31].
Giriraja: After the kirtana we read the Krsna book, and his parents want to leave, but he insists on staying.
Prabhupada: Good boy. Very good.
Yasomatinandana: What was that, inquired?
Prabhupada: Eh? What is that?
Yasomatinandana: Giriraja was saying something.
Giriraja: Oh, yes, the scientist. When the reporter asked him where the things come from, he said he doesn't know but he's sure that...
Prabhupada: Still, he is scientist. He doesn't know. He is rascal, still he is scientist. (laughter) Just see. Contradiction. He doesn't know. Still, he is scientist. One word. He doesn't know anything, but he is scientist. Just see. (Hindi) And we have to hear him -- the unfortunate position. We say that "Go for scientific knowledge to a person who knows, who has seen." And this rascal, he says, "I do not know; still, I am scientist." Then what he replied? He doesn't know?
Giriraja: But he's sure that they don't need God to explain it.
Prabhupada: That he knows, how to deny God. That he is expert. And the newspaper reporter accepted this?
Giriraja: No. He didn't express his point of view, but you could see he wasn't satisfied.
Prabhupada: That is the position. Hare Krsna. Jaya.
Giriraja: Then he asked him about the future.
Prabhupada: Future is darkness because these are scientists. He doesn't know; still, he is scientist. Then what is the future? Future is darkness, because a person who doesn't know, he has become leader. The same thing, andha yathandhair upaniyamanah [SB 7.5.31]. If a blind man, he becomes the leader of other blind men...
Devotee (2): Actually it's sad that if someone says there is no God then that means that they...
Prabhupada: He's a dog.
Devotee (2): He's a dog.
Prabhupada: Yes, immediately. Anyone who says there is no God, then he, immediately he's a dog. That's all.
Yasomatinandana: No more words.
Prabhupada: No more words. He is immediately a dog. That's all.
Devotee (2): If he cannot see throughout the entire universe, from one end of the universe to the other, how can he make the statement that there is no God? He cannot see. And yet they are saying, "I don't know."
Prabhupada: This is reasonable. [break] ...no God, it is spoken by pagala, mad, mad. In Bengal it is said, pagale ki na bale, chagale ki na khaya. (Hindi) Chagala, goat.
Brahmananda: "What the goat does not eat?" Is that?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Brahmananda: "What the goat does not eat?"
Prabhupada: It eats everything, goat.
Brahmananda: "And what the fool will not speak?"
Prabhupada: Yes. There is no discrimination. We can go this side. Pagale ki na bale, chagale ki na khaya. Hare Krsna.
Yasomatinandana: Now all these pagalas are making such a big noise all over the world.
Prabhupada: Yes. Nunam pramattah kurute vikarma [SB 5.5.4]. And doing all kinds of sinful activities -- kurute vikarma -- because they are pagalas. Nunam pramattah kurute vikarma. It is very difficult there to cross?
Indian man (3): Yes, sir. [break]
Prabhupada: (Hindi)
Indian man (3): What is your idea about the secularism preached by our government of India and the policy of secularism? What do they mean by that? That means they say that there is no place for religion.
Prabhupada: Yes. Dharmena hina pasubhih samana. As soon as there is no religion, the population-animal, that's all. That is going on. Because there was no religion, therefore the government has to declare emergency. (laughter) Because all animals. So they created first animals, then emergency. This is going on. Hare Krsna. Why emergency? If there is human being, then why emergency? All animals. To control the animals you require some special measure. This is the proof that they're animals. Otherwise why? Hare Krsna. That is long, long ago said, dharmena hina pasubhih samana: "When you give up religion, you are no better than animals."
Indian man (3): What is the harm if I become an animal also?
Prabhupada: You are already animal. There is no question of becoming animal. You are already animal. (laughter)
Indian man (3): So what is the difference between animal and a man?
Prabhupada: Because you do not know, therefore you are animal. Therefore you are animal. You do not know what is the difference between man and animal; therefore you are animal.
Indian man (3): Very good. (laughter)
Prabhupada: You are good animal. (laughter)
Indian man (3): This is right answer. When you cannot differentiate between man and animal, then that means you are animal.
Prabhupada: And you admit it -- then good animal. (laughter) Hare Krsna. [break] ...who has got this bodily conception of life, he is animal. That is the definition of animal.
Indian man (3): Anyone?
Prabhupada: Who is thinking, "I am this body," he is animal.
yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke
sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih
yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicit
janesv abhijnesu sa eva gokharah
 [SB 10.84.13]
Indian man (3): Means?
Prabhupada: Means anyone who is thinking, "I am this body."
Indian man (3): "I am the"?
Prabhupada: This body. And in body relationship, "She is my wife, she is my child, she is my countrymen, she is my race." So this is dehatma-buddhih. Yasyatma-buddhih... "This is my country." In this way one is thinking, and little more religiosity, he is going to holy place and taking bath in the river but not to the person who knows things. Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. There are. Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. Go means cow, and kharah means ass. This class of men are grouped among the cows and asses.
Dr. Patel: Asses.
Indian man (3): That means they have got no... Sthira buddhih neha(?) (Hindi)
Prabhupada: (Hindi) This is animal civilization. There is no spiritual knowledge. Simply like cats and dogs, they are working hard, eating, sleeping...
Indian man (3): Then what should be the spirit of a man? How do you call him a man?
Prabhupada: When he knows that he is not this body -- he is soul, aham brahmasmi -- then he begins to become. Then his real identity...
Indian man (3): That means ninety-nine, ninety percent of the people living in the world are practically animals.
Prabhupada: Yes. Asses.
Indian man (3): Asses.
Prabhupada: Very good analysis. Why asses? And you load the ass with as much cloth, washerman, and he cannot move. But he will go on, and the washerman will give, after that, little grass, and he will stand there up to the evening again to be loaded. The ass does not know that "This much grass I can get anywhere. Why I have become servant of this washerman?" Therefore he is ass. He will eat two capatis, but he is working like an ass whole day.
Indian man (3): Yes. And he cannot eat more than two capatis.
Prabhupada: That's all. So if the ass, he will eat a little grass, which can be had anywhere, but he is working for the washerman. Therefore he is ass.
Indian man (3): But (Hindi) in the ass... There is (Hindi) some egotism in the human being, but that is not there in the ass.
Prabhupada: No, no, that egoism also ass has got. That egoism is there in ass also.
Indian man (3): But how do you know it?
Prabhupada: Any animal, he knows that "I am ass." Dog knows, "I am dog." Similarly, if you know "I am Hindu," "I am Mussulman" --  the same conception. What is the difference? If a dog thinks "I am dog," and if you think that you are Indian, then where is the difference? Simply by changing the name you become very big man? The conception is the same.
Indian man (3): That point is not clear.
Prabhupada: It is clear. Just like two dogs. He is thinking, "I am dog of this quarter," and another dog is thinking, "I am this dog. Gow! Gow! Gow! Gow! Gow!" So what is that? Does that make any difference? Similarly, you are thinking, "Indian," he is thinking, "American." Fighting like dogs. Where is the difference between the dog and this conception?
Indian man (3): That point is right.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Indian man (4): (Hindi)
Indian man (3): Make your mind understand is very problematic.
Prabhupada: It is not problematic. It requires the association. Association, teacher, then it will be possible.
Indian man (3): Association is most necessary.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Indian man (3): (Hindi)
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna.
Indian man (3): Namaste.
Prabhupada: Jaya. Hare Krsna. Thank you. [break] (Hindi)...reporter was not satisfied. Eh?
Brahmananda: Giriraja? The press reporter was not satisfied.
Giriraja: No. Then he asked him about the future.
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna. So what he will...? He does not know. What he'll speak? Hare Krsna.
Giriraja: He said the population will go on increasing more and more, and there won't be enough food, so everyone will starve.
Prabhupada: He said, the scientist. Then what your scientific knowledge will help?
Brahmananda: Well, if they drop some bombs they will reduce the population. (laughter)
Prabhupada: That is very easy. The bomb is also ready. Everyone has got now nuclear weapon, bomb. So the scientists gave the solution. So what is the use of scientific knowledge? This is going to happen.
Brahmananda: Actually there was one proposal. It was written in the seventeenth century in England by one famous writer, that "Because the population is increasing so much, therefore if we become cannibals, then the population will be maintained."
Yasomatinandana: So who will eat who?
Brahmananda: Well, that he didn't say.
Prabhupada: These are scientists, big men.
Giriraja: So the reporter asked him what were his personal plans for the future. So he said he likes one girl, so he wants to get married, and that's all.
Brahmananda: Increase the population. (laughter)
Prabhupada: Our plan is the best because before meeting such catastrophies, go back to home, back to Godhead. This is the best. They are seeing the catastrophe, but they have no way to escape. That is the difference between them and ourselves. Jaya. Hare Krsna. Jaya. [break] ...said that "There is no need of God, but there is need of girl, of a girl." He said that. Then what is the difference between a scientist and a dog? The dog also does not know what is God, but another female dog he wants. Huh? What is the difference? Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. Then it is proved that he is no better than animal. The animal requires another opposite sex, but he does not know God. Then where is the difference? [break]
Brahmananda: You know that the Detroit house, the house in Detroit? The president, he wrote in his letter. I neglected to ask you. He wanted to have a name for that temple.
Prabhupada: Oh.
Brahmananda: So Ambarisa prabhu says that he was thinking of New Kesighata, because it's situated near the water.
Prabhupada: Kesighata we have already given in New Vrn...
Ambarisa: It's right on a river. [break]
Prabhupada: ...name that... Krsna... They brought the assembly house from heaven and located in Dvaraka. There is a name like that. I shall give you the name.
Brahmananda: [break] ...robi. You can give a name for Nairobi mandir.
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] Devasadan.
Brahmananda: Devasadan. What is the meaning?
Prabhupada: Celestial building.
Ambarisa: What does it mean?
Brahmananda: Celestial.
Prabhupada: D-e-v-a-s-a-d-a-n. Devasadan. [break]
Brahmananda: ...Devasadana?
Prabhupada: No. Devasadan.
Brahmananda: Just Devasadan.
Prabhupada: Yes. [break]
Brahmananda: ...Vrndavana.
Prabhupada: Vrndavana is not black. (laughter) People have come less due to candra-gana. [break] Kiratuddhara.
Brahmananda: Kirata?
Prabhupada: Uddhara.
Brahmananda: Udha. Udha means?
Prabhupada: Uddhara means deliverance.
Brahmananda: Okay. "Delivering the kiratas." They might object to that. (laughing) They might object to that.
Prabhupada: They might object?
Brahmananda: The Africans, if they ask what is the meaning of that, they might object.
Prabhupada: No, you can say kirata means African. Actually that is the meaning. Kirata-hunandhra-pulinda-pulkhasa abhira-sumbha yavanah khasadayah ye 'nye ca papa...
Yasomatinandana: Yad-apasrayasrayah.
Prabhupada: Suddhyanti.
Yasomatinandana: What is this Abhiras? Abhira?
Prabhupada: Abhira, this dacoit class.
Yasomatinandana: Dacoits.
Prabhupada: Just like the queens of Dvaraka were plundered by the Abhira. That's why. There is no pasturing ground. Otherwise this cow would have been taken there. He would have eaten grass. That's all. What she will eat here in the town? Even Sumati Morarji's cows, they are not healthy. (Hindi) (pause) It appears to be so because in the evening the milk, whatever you give me, that appears to be powdered milk.
Brahmananda: It was powdered milk?
Prabhupada: It appears. Now it is confirmed.
Yasomatinandana: Maybe we should have our men stand there and milk and get directly from...
Prabhupada: Everyone will say, "We should have," but who will have? There is no men. As soon as try to find out a man, there is no man. Simply we shall suggest, "We should have." That's all. And who is the man, that is not to be found, although we have got so many men. Why this deficiency? Everyone suggests that "There should have been a man," but who is that man? No man. As soon as try to find out who is that man, no man. Find out a man immediately. Not "should have." Immediately you must have. [break]
Brahmananda: ...means?
Prabhupada: Means African.
Brahmananda: African? No other meaning to it? No other meaning?
Prabhupada: American? (laughter) (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: Their civilization begins from monkey, and our civilization begins from...Dr. Patel: From Vedas.
Prabhupada: ...Brahma.
Dr. Patel: From Brahma actually when he learned the Vedas.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Patel: Those four or five, five or four slokas, original of Srimad-Bhagavatam, I want to learn from you. I read all the commentary -- you have written commentary for four pages -- but I think I am little mudha to understand it. (laughing) So I'll learn directly if you can teach me. I am now critically studying your, this thing, commentary on this.
Prabhupada: Hm. Very good.
Dr. Patel: Once I read it, but now I am doing a critical study of it. Both of Sanskrit as well as your comments. [break]
Prabhupada: ...divided by separate words.
Dr. Patel: It is written in purport too much (Sanskrit). The combination of this word is so difficult...
Prabhupada: ...recommended to study Bhagavata from bhagavata, not by grammar.
Dr. Patel: No, no. But unless, I mean, I like Sanskrit myself, so I try to learn Sanskrit; I can read other, more Sanskrit books. So it is a sort of a study with me, as well as a knowledge of Bhagavata. So I am trying to be more critical about it. But that way I have read Bhagavata in Gujarati, even in Hindi (indistinct) Gorhakpur.
Prabhupada: ...Visnu Purana.
Dr. Patel: Visnu Purana is (indistinct) from Mahabharata. It is very easy. Extremely easy.
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna! (to passerby)
Dr. Patel: Some of the, some people try to poke at us also.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Dr. Patel: They are fools.
Prabhupada: What is that?
Dr. Patel: Well, because we, we chant God's name, out of fun they also say. But we...
Prabhupada: That is also good.
Dr. Patel: That we should not take it like that.
Prabhupada: If one chants Hare Krsna jokingly, that is also good.
Dr. Patel: That's it. Yesterday morning you came?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Patel: I thought you were coming tonight. Because you, your letter has come that you reach on the (indistinct).
Prabhupada: What is that? God says "Let there be creation," and there was creation. Why three months?
Dr. Patel: Ah, that is, we are not... (laughing)
Prabhupada: He says "Let there be creation"; there was creation.
Dr. Patel: It was the will of God, so this is also the will of God.
Prabhupada: Here you see, God says, "You come here," immediately you come. "You go there," immediately you go there. (Dr. Patel laughs loudly) You cannot bring the water by your scientific process, immediately. But when God says "Immediately" -- within a second. (sound of waves in background) Hare Krsna.
Dr. Patel: I am going to give you a small piece of news. My, that small daughter, she also took first-class, first distinction name.
Prabhupada: Oh, bolo(?).
Dr. Patel: She also stood first. My son also stood first and got the gold medal. She also got the same, by your grace!
Prabhupada: (laughs) By Krsna's grace.
Dr. Patel: This is unique perfomance in Bombay, that no doctor's two children have got first like this.
Prabhupada: Hm. All of them, M.D.?
Dr. Patel: M.D. Very distinguished, first class. I was very much pleased... [break]
Prabhupada: ...one is animal. So animal means ferocious. Dharmena yena pasave samanah. They're as good as animal. You cannot expect any good behavior from animals. This is going on. They want to keep the whole population animal, and they're making big, big plans-United Nations, this, that.
Dr. Patel: This is a problem. It's committed from the poor nations of the world, this United Nations.
Prabhupada: There is no education for making people a human being.
Dr. Patel: Karl Marx, Hagel and Engels and those people have got this nonsensical idea that interaction of matter itself produces what we call consciousness. It is not the consciousness which I mean agrees with the matter. The very first basis on which this rascaldom is, I mean the basis is this: revolting against the tenets of Hindu teaching. No?
Prabhupada: Hindu-Muslim teaching...
Dr. Patel: No, I mean sanatana dharma of this country.
Prabhupada: Sanatana dharma, there is no teaching; it is already there.
Dr. Patel: Yes, that's it.
Prabhupada: There is no concoction.
Dr. Patel: This concoction has come out from there.
Prabhupada: Yes. No, everywhere. In your country also there are so many parties...
Dr. Patel: Karl Marx...
Prabhupada: Karl Marx maybe. Even your Gandhi-ism, that is also concoction. Gandhi invented nonviolence; it is also concoction. It is impossible. Everyone is doing this -- something manufacturing. That is not sanatana dharma. Sanatana dharma is never manufactured. It is already there. You have to accept it, that's all. Otherwise everyone is manufacturing some conncoction. This is going on. Krsna is teaching, "Fight." And Gandhi is teaching from Bhagavad-gita nonviolence. Just see! Is it possible?
Dr. Patel: The will of God is the real thing.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is Krsna consciousness. His will is supreme. Whatever He says, that's all. As soon as you manufacture, everything is spoiled.
Dr. Patel: It is fractured by man instead of manufacturing. Fractured, broken.
Prabhupada: Yes. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanas te'pisa-tantryam uru-damni baddhah [SB 7.5.31]. Pisa tantrya, under the laws of God or nature, everyone is tied, hands and legs, and he's thinking independently, "I can do that."
Dr. Patel: But slowly and slowly, sir, the modern science is trying to prove that sanatana dharma, the existence of God everywhere. Which in our times, if we respect scientists for their...
Prabhupada: "They are trying to prove" means so long they are rascals...
Dr. Patel: They are rascals. I quite agree with you. You have caught my rascals. (both laughing)
Prabhupada: As soon as you say "progressing," that means they are rascals. Unless one is rascal, what is the meaning of progress? Hm? Rascal requires progress.
Dr. Patel: Whether they do progress or regress we don't know, but...
Prabhupada: No, that progress means still rascals. After ten years they'll make no... This is progress. So they have no standard knowledge, and that is very much palatable, modern progress. Mudha.
Dr. Patel: But sincerely by all these six, six, I mean sastra, I mean what you call darsanals(?), our forefathers have realized God, by all the six methods of darsanas.
Prabhupada: You, why your forefathers? Everyone's forefather can understand.
Dr. Patel: No, no. Other civilized people's forefathers. (laughs) The Aryan race. Nyaya vaisesika also has told the same thing. This, such sastra, I mean darsanas, are all from the Vedas. They are all from the Vedas you see.
Prabhupada: No, they are not strictly Vedas. They are partial. Just like mimamsa. They say that you do good work and you get the result. That is godlessness.
Dr. Patel: Karma-mimamsa, karma-kandis.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Patel: But a karma-kandi is one of the...
Prabhupada: "There is no need of God. You do your duty."
Dr. Patel: And God will do His duty.
Prabhupada: "God is obliged to give you the award." That is their philosophy. We can practically see: suppose two men working very hard, are they getting the same result?
Dr. Patel: No, that is their karma bandhana...
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna! (greeting a few people) Jaya.
Dr. Patel: Your explanation of this is so very wonderful about the all muktas and baddha jivas in the beginning, I mean the Bhagavatam, that even people, whether to remain mukta or baddha. And then when they became baddha, they were overtaken by the lower maya. And then this is the whole cosmos. So gravely I have understood this, just this is my second reading.
Prabhupada: Krsna bhuliya jive bhagavan akore kari pasate maya ta're japatiya kare.
Dr. Patel: I think this one commentary is Jiva Goswami's. Hm?
Prabhupada: Yes. Jiva... Not Jiva Goswami. There are... I consult so many others.
Dr. Patel: This commentary is Rupa Goswami or Jiva Goswami? Jiva Goswami.
Prabhupada: No, we have got Visvanatha Cakravarti also. Sridhara Swami, Biraraghava, Vijayadvaja. Hare Krsna! (to passerby who loudly greets and has Hindi exchange)
Dr. Patel: This man is seventy years old. (more exchange of greetings) He is sixty-eight, sixty-nine years. He will be eighty years, (laughing) he wants to remain young that way.
Prabhupada: Healthy, he's quite healthy. (Hindi conversation with other man) We repeat simply Krsna's statement. That is our... Our mission is "Krsna's standard" -- yare dekha tare kaha krsna upadesa. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission. Don't manufacture, rascaldom. Simply repeat what Krsna has said. And it is simple. And as soon as you try to manufacture, it becomes difficult. How Caitanya Mahaprabhu has made things so easy.
amara ajnaya guru haya tare ei desa
 yare dekha, tare kaha 'krsna'-upadesa
 [Cc. Madhya 7.128]
That's all. How simple it is. You, every one of us, we take this missionary activities of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, we see immediately the face of the country will change. Every gentleman, every sane man, may speak to his family, to his community, to his nation, to his friend, what Krsna has said. Then see the result. But they're all manufacturing, conncocting. Becoming big scholars. The more you deviate from Krsna's instructions, you become a scholar.
Dr. Patel: I mean the industrial revolution has really produced a sort of a turmoil in the social set-up...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Patel: Because the machine has produced good, and the benefit has been taken over by the...
Prabhupada: Ugra, ugra. This has been described in Bhagavad-gita, ugra karma.
Dr. Patel: Yes. Ugra karma.
Prabhupada: Instead of making life simplified, they have made it a turmoil.
Dr. Patel: And then the whole society has been so entangled in this things. Independently (indistinct). In this way this industrialization, raising of the wants of men, and then production for the fulfilling of their wants. Only men engaged all the twenty-four hours in this fulfillment of the wants. All the machines are grinding for that. Production of the goods, not for the good... [break]
Prabhupada: ...Karl Marx, why not others?
Dr. Patel: Karl Marx is the grandfather of all of this.
Prabhupada: Anyone who is concocting, he is an asura. Hm? Na vidur asura ajana (sic). Pravitti ca nivrtti ca na vidur asura ajana (sic).
Dr. Patel: (Sanskrit) That is what they want. If they are competing with each other from tomorrow...
Prabhupada: (aside:) Hare Krsna, Jaya! [break] No. Why Karl Marx? Your Vivekananda says yata mat tata patha: whatever you manufacture, that is all right.
Dr. Patel: That is because you are struck by the utter poverty of the people...
Prabhupada: No, no...
Dr. Patel: It was temporary, you see. Because here Karl Marx wanted it permanent, and...
Prabhupada: He himself is suffering from poverty -- of knowledge.
Dr. Patel: Karl Marx, he committed the greatest sin...
Prabhupada: Krsna says mam ekan saranam vraja, and Vivekananda says yatha mat tatha path. Just see. He is poverty-stricken of knowledge, and he's giving knowledge. Just see the fun. Caitanya Mahaprabhu said guru more murkha dekhi' kori... sasan: [Cc. Adi 7.71] "My guru found Me, seeing Me, I am a fool number one, he has chastised Me." What is that? "Don't read Vedanta; You cannot understand. Chant Hare Krsna," because...
Dr. Patel: Here we are talking about the divya part of the...
Prabhupada: Because, no, He was questioned...
Dr. Patel: ...of the life. I talk of the maintenance of the body. To maintain the body Karl Marx put up this theory and, I mean, spoiled the whole thing -- whole society and social set-up.
Prabhupada: (Hindi to a passerby) Everyone is manufacturing; that is my point. Either Karl Marx or this one or that one, everyone is manufacturing. No one is taking the instruction. And our mission is "Take instruction of Krsna." This is Krsna consciousness. We don't manufacture like nonsense. What you'll manufacture? You are imperfect, your senses are imperfect...
Dr. Patel: We are manufacturing only for the body, but all these...
Prabhupada: Nothing you can manufacture, even in the body. You are medical practitioner, hundreds of men you see, different types of body. Is it not? You cannot say that this is the standard." Karanam guna-sangasya sad-asad-yoni-janmasu. The actual disease is the contamination of the guna.
Dr. Patel: But they desire the people who are manufacturing for the gunas only, and not for the soul. That is what I am hinting at.
Prabhupada: That is another ignorance. That is another ignorance.
Dr. Patel: These fellows... That is what I said. That they are ignorant because they are only doing anything for the body and not for the soul.
Prabhupada: Always gunatita. They do not understand traigunya-visaya veda nistraigunyo bhavarjuna. Everyone is contaminated by the...
Dr. Patel: All the lower, all this knowledge is no doubt traigunya. Superior knowledge. But spiritual knowledge is beyond the three gunas.
Prabhupada: Yes. Sa gunan samatityaitan brahma-bhuyaya kalpate [Bg. 14.26]. We have to transcend all these gunas, and that is Krsna consciousness. Now they are realizing even in Western countries...
Dr. Patel: But they will realize (Hindi). They will learn it by...
Prabhupada: (Hindi, makes Patel laugh) Krsna juta maro ha mam kavi ne jan...
Dr. Patel: (laughing heartily) ...you are very hard...
Prabhupada: What is the meaning of vihaya? (Hindi)
Dr. Patel: We tolerate everything. (more Hindi) The whole civilization, the modern civilization, is wholly at fault. Unfortunate. And that is the schools we are sending our children to, and these are the public schools.
Prabhupada: (Hindi about the Gurukula in Vrndavana)
Dr. Patel: They're getting (indistinct) of knowledge, after all they will (indistinct).
Prabhupada: We are opening gurukula, but who will give? A gentleman will not give. Hare Krsna! (man stops and Patel introduces him)
Dr. Patel: He's a great scholar and poet of Gujarati literature, and he comes from the same place where the... Bet, he's from Bet, Dvaraka-bet, where all those temples are.
Prabhupada: He's a great devotee of Krsna.
Dr. Patel: Yes, he's a brahmana devotee of Krsna. And a great teacher, he was at university, a professor of Gujarati literature and a great, well-renowned poet...
Prabhupada: So you do not come to our temple?
Man: Don't believe what he says! (laughter) I am just a humble servant.
Prabhupada: That is wanted. That is Krsna consciousness. Gopi bhartuh pada-kamalayor dasa-dasanudasa...
Dr. Patel: He only writes poems on God, Mr. Bethai. His name is Bethai, because he comes from the Bet.
Prabhupada: Oh.
Dr. Patel: Dvaraka-bet.
Prabhupada: (Bengali:) ...puri sankhe bole mane ram. That don't go to any... Sit down anywhere and chant Hare Krsna.
Dr. Patel: Places of worship are sacred because of the, because sacred people are living there.
Prabhupada: Govinda carana kara sau -- always think of Govinda carana. Prahlada Maharaja also. Mukundam caranambujam. Make this business only. And Raghunatha dasa Gosvami also, he, "Don't execute dharma, neither commit sinful life. Simply think of Krsna's lotus feet." Krsna also says, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto...
Dr. Patel: Sir, lotus feet; these are, these people are actually putting such a long varga, I am trying to see the lotus feet of God here, arca-vigraha. Well, I am unable. Instruct them to put up, little varga up, so that we can have darsana of His sacred feet. Please. Tell them. Too long vargas, you simply can't see anything. You were there on...
Giriraja: That's in the morning, because of the night dresses. But after the srngara is changed for the day, you can see.
Prabhupada: How He's sat tight to call everyone to come and see. Hm? The municipality came to drive Him away.
Dr. Patel: You see the present municipal, I mean, administration has fallen into the hands of rogue rascals and horrid people, you know, because of these so-called arald(?) franchise... (end)
