"Relief From Unbearable Burdens"

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.8.34
Mayapura, October 14, 1974

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Nitai: "Others say that the world, being overburdened like a boat at sea, is much aggrieved, and that Brahma, who is Your son, prayed for You, and so You have appeared to diminish the trouble."

Prabhupada:

bharavataranayanye
bhuvo nava ivodadhau
sidantya bhuri-bharena
jato hy atma-bhuvarthitah

So Brahma's another name is Atma-bhu. He is born from Garbhodakasayi Visnu without the help of Laksmi. Laksmi was there; she was massaging on the lotus feet of the Lord, but the Lord did not take help of Laksmi, and He gave birth to Brahma. Therefore Brahma's another name is Atma-bhu, "born from the father directly, without taking the help of the mother." So another name is Svayambhu. Brahma's another name is Svayambhu.

svayambhur naradah sambhuh
kumarah kapilo manuh
prahlado janako bhismo
balir vaiyasakir vayam
[SB 6.3.20]

Out of the twelve authorities of sastra, Brahma is the origin, and he has been explained as Svayambhu. Atma-bhu, like that.

So this is the Supreme Personality's omnipotency. He does not require the help of another woman to beget child. Even Brahma, he has given birth to so many children not through woman but from his different parts of the body. So this we cannot conceive, because we are materially impeded. We cannot understand this is possible. So possibility and impossibility does not depend on our understanding. We have to take knowledge from the authority. Here, in the Vedic literature, we understand that Brahma was born directly from the father. So we have to accept it. That is called Vedic knowledge. You cannot argue. That is possible. That is omnipotency. All potencies are there.

So Brahma was approached by the earth, mother earth. She felt overburdened by the sinful activities of the demons. So Brahma approaches Narayana, er, Visnu -- not directly he can see, but he can stand on the bank of the ocean of milk, and from there he can submit his petition. And Garbhodakasayi Visnu gives His order. So once upon a time, when the whole world was overburdened -- this is the history of Krsna's birth -- so the earthly planet approached Brahma to appeal to Garbhodakasayi Visnu to have His incarnation to diminish the burden of the world. The world is, of course, it is very heavy. We can understand there are so many oceans and so many big, big hills, besides your skyscraper building, and certainly the whole lump of matter is very heavy. But not only this planet, but many other planets, even the sun planet. It is heavier by fourteen hundred thousand times. Still, they are floating in the air by... Why? Because Krsna enters in each of them.

In each of them... Gam avisya. Dharayamy aham ojasa. Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita that "I enter into each planetary system, each universe, and by My power I hold it. It is floating." Why it is floating? Because Krsna is there. The atheist may not believe it, but it is a fact. It is a fact. How? Just like an animal or a man, while he is living, he can float in the air or in the water. That everyone has seen. But if the man is dead, it will not float. It will fall down. Is it not a fact? So why it is floating? Because a very small particle of Krsna's spiritual potency is there. That is living entity. Big, big... An elephant, he can also float in the water, and the horses, elephant, and what to speak of man? This is practical. Because a small particle of the Supreme is there within this body... Dehino 'smin yatha dehe [Bg. 2.13]. Very small particle. How much small? One ten-thousandth part of the top of the hair, so small. It has got so power that it can hold the whole body floating in the air. Air... There are very, very big, big birds. They are floating in the air, very, very big eagle. They fly from one planet to another. Their resting place is... They start from one planet, and they go and rest in other planet. And they lay their eggs while flying. That eggs also become a bird simply by air cohesion. That's all.

Devotee: Friction.

Prabhupada: Friction, yes. So there are so, so big, big arrangement in the kingdom of God. So it is not very difficult for Him to give birth to Brahma or to float this whole universe or the planets in the air. We shall have to apply our intelligence by comparative study. So if it is possible to float a big body... There are many big bodies. The whale fish, it is as big as a ship. Still, it is floating. Why? That small particle of spiritual entity is there. Therefore it is floating. Then, if the Supreme Person enters into a big lump of matter, why it will not float? What is the reason? At least I try to understand in this way. Am I wrong or right? What is your opinion? Eh? No, it is...

So this is called faith. This is called faith. Unless you have got faith, you cannot understand what is Krsna. Adau sraddha. Sraddha: "Yes, Krsna can make anything possible." That faith we must maintain. That is the basic... That has been explained by Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami, what is faith. "Faith means complete conviction." Sraddha-sabde visvasa kahe sudrdha niscaya. That is faith. Visvasa. If I say something and if you believe cent percent, that is called faith. That is called faith. Not that "It may be," or... No. So sraddha-sabde visvasa. Visvasa means faith. How? What kind of faith? Sudrdha niscaya, firm faith, without any doubt. Niscaya. And what is that faith? Krsne bhakti kaile sarva-karma krta haya. If one is surrendered to Krsna, then his all duty is done, finished. He has nothing to do. Na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate. As Krsna has nothing to do -- He has got so much potency that things are done very automatically -- similarly, if you faith, have faith in Krsna -- krsne bhakti kaile sarva-karma -- then everything will be done automatically. Krsna will do for him. What is the difficulty there?

So this big, big lump of matter, earthly planet, they are actually not heavy, but it becomes heavier when there are demons. Demons means material activities. If there is spiritual activity, it remains very light. And if there is too much material activity and materialistic persons, it become heavier and troublesome. So such time became possible, and therefore the earthly planet went to Brahma to appeal to Visnu to take His incarnation. So somebody says that bharavatara..., taranaya, avataranaya, to diminish the burden, burden... Just like a bad son is a burden of the father. This has been explained by Canakya Pandita that a stupid son... Ko 'rthah putrena jatena yo na vidvan na bhaktiman: "What is the use of getting a son who is neither learned nor a devotee? Useless." Ko 'rthah putrena jatena: "Such kind of son, what is the use?" The son who is not a devotee... Two things are required: the son should be a devotee or a learned. Without being learned, nobody can become devotee. If one becomes devotee, he's learned also. But sometimes materially learned, not devotee, it happens. So if one is neither learned nor devotee, what is the use of such son? The example is given: kanena caksusa kimva caksuh pidaiva kevalam: "If you have got one eye, cataract, you cannot see, but it is always troublesome." Unless you get it operated, it is simply troublesome. In many places it is said, Canakya Pandita... Ko 'rthah putrena jatena. Varam eko guni putro na ca murkha-satair api: "If you get one son, very qualified, that is preferred. What is the use of having many sons and all of them are rascals and fools?" Na ca murkha-satair api.

So as a father becomes perplexed when there are rascal sons, similarly, when there are increase of rascal population the world becomes overburdened. Therefore it is called... It is said in the Bhagavad-gita, varna-sankara. Varna-sankara. Now the whole world is practically full of varna-sankara. First of all, there is no division of varnas. Catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah [Bg. 4.13]. According to quality, it can be done. But people are not interested. They want hodge-podge. Therefore they are suffering. They cannot systematically do anything. So when the system of varna and asrama is destroyed... Just like in Western countries there is no such thing as varna and asrama. Therefore the varna-sankara, the hippies... That is varna-sankara. So varna-sankara... In the Bhagavad-gita... If the varna-sankara increases, strisu dustasu varna-sankaro jayate. When women become polluted, no fixed-up husband -- that is pollution for woman, no chaste, no chastity -- then this varna-sankara will come out. And when the world is overpopulated by varna-sankara, it will become a burden. Therefore it so became, atheist, varna-sankara, demons. So it was unbearable by the earthly planet. And it is said, yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata, tadatmanam srjamy aham [Bg. 4.7]. Therefore mother earth went to appeal, "Please come and save me. I am very much overburdened." Therefore it is said, bharavataranaya: "diminish."

So five thousand years ago Krsna came to kill some of the demons. Not all of them were demons. But next time, when Krsna will come, it will be only demons. Only demons. Kalki avatara. What is that stotra? Kesava dhrta-kalki-sarira jaya jagadisa hare. So at that time Krsna will not preach Bhagavad-gita. Kalki avatara will simply come to cut the throat only. That will be the preaching. That will be preaching. Mleccha-nivaha-nidhane kalayasi karavalam, karalam. Karalam means death personified. Mleccha-nidhane. Mleccha means meat-eaters. Those who are meat-eaters, fish-eaters, they are mlecchas. Mleccha-yavana, they are called, according to Vedic... So people are becoming meat-eaters nowadays. I have... There is no secrecy. Formerly, at least in India, the meat-eaters used to eat meat very secretly. We had seen in our childhood. If somebody will meat-eat, it was not allowed within the house. They, formerly, rich men, they used to keep Muslim servants as the caretaker of the horse or the carriage driver. So in the (horse)(?) stable(?) they would secretly cook some meat, and the so-called Babu, Zamindar, will eat. It was not allowed. And those who are not rich men -- poor men, sudra class -- they would go to Kali-ghata, and get one goat, sacrifice there, and cook there and eat, then come back. Meat-eating was not at all allowed. The higher caste, especially the brahmanas, they would never touch. Still in some provinces, in Maharastra provinces, in Madras... Of course, they are now taking.

So meat-eaters means mleccha. So now that is increasing, meat-eaters. So when wholesale population will be meat-eaters, mleccha, they'll not understand anything about spiritual matter -- "Why it is forbidden?" because the meat-eaters, they cannot understand anything about spiritual matter. It is very difficult. Vina pasughnat. Pariksit Maharaja said,

nivrtta-tarsair upagiyamanad
bhavausadhac chrotra-mano-'bhiramat
ka uttamasloka-gunanuvadat
puman virajyeta vina pasughnat
[SB 10.1.4]

This chanting of Hare Krsna maha-mantra is possible by a person who is nivrtta-tarsa. Nivrtta-tarsa. Nivrtta means finished. Brahmany upasamasrayam. We have to finish this material business before we can understand spiritual thing. If one has got still inclination for material things, it is useless waste of time for him to understand, try to understand what is spiritual thing. So nivrtta-tarsair upagiyamanat. Actually the holy name of Lord can be chanted by a person like Haridasa Thakura, who has no other desire, material desire. But those are not like Haridasa Thakura, they may take... Bhavausadhi. If he chants, then gradually he'll be released from this material disease. For them, this is the chance. Actually it is meant for liberated person like Haridasa Thakura. Then why we are chanting? We are chanting -- ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12] -- to cleanse our heart, to cure the material disease.

So it is actually relished by the liberated persons, but those who are diseased like us, they can chant and gradually cure the material disease. This is the basic principle of chanting the holy name of Krsna. Nivrtta-tarsair upagiyamanat. Upagiyamana, it is chanting. Why? Bhavausadhi. It is medicine of this bhava-roga. What is that bhava-roga? Bhava-roga... Bhava means you become, means take your birth and again die. Bhutva bhutva praliyate. This is our disease. This is called samsara. All these rascals in the material world, they are simply getting one body and again... Vasamsi jirnani yatha viha... When it is useless, no more can be used, then you get another body according to the price you pay. Just like when your garment is old, you purchase another garment. So you can purchase very good garment, or not very good garment, as you pay price. Similarly, to get a different type of garment or this body, you'll have to pay price. Price. If you are in higher status of consciousness, then urdhvam gacchanti sattva-sthah: you get your body in the higher planetary system where the comforts are thousands and thousand times better than this.

We can understand that, that the material comforts in the Western countries are better than in this country. Similarly, urdhvam gacchanti sattva-sthah. We can go to the higher planetary systems; we get more duration of life. Just like Brahma has got very, very long, millions and millions of years to our calculation. Just like the insect who comes, attacks us at night. Their duration of life? That night only. Within the night, they are born, they have sex life, and they beget children and increase the population, and as soon as the night finished, all finished. They have got also duration of life. And if you say to them that "There is another animal called man. This night is only twelve hours. And he has got day, another twelve hours. In this way, one month. In... Thirty days. And then..." He becomes surprised: "How it is possible?" Similarly, when we calculate the age of Brahma, we become astonished, "How such millions and millions of years...?" Because we, in comparison to Brahma, we are like insect.

So this is scientific. This world is relative. This is relative world. According to your position, you get. The time is also relative. What is present, past, present, future for you, that is not past, present, future for others. So what is past, present for Brahma, that is not past, present, future for us. Everything is relative. And in the creation of Krsna there are so many relativities. Therefore it is called relative world. Time is eternal, but on account of our relative birth and death, we make our own past and present. Otherwise, time is eternal. Therefore, for Krsna, there is no such thing as past, present and future. Because He is He, He's time eternal. Therefore He knows everything. Vedaham. Just like you know, present, everything -- there is no past; there is no future -- similarly, for Krsna there is no such, past and future. Therefore He could say that "Formerly, millions and trillions of years ago," according to Arjuna's calculation, "I spoke this Bhagavad-gita to sun-god." He did not believe it because he is relatively calculating past and present. But Krsna is not within that past and present. Therefore Krsna said that "Both I and you, you and Me, we appear many times." Bahuni me vyatitani. "And you were also... But you forget because you have got past, present, future. I have no such thing. Therefore I remember."

So in this way, if people become irreligious or not spiritual, the burden of the world becomes heavier, unbearable. That you can understand. I have already explained. This body, this body, you weigh it. Say, it is one man, fifty seras or something like... But as soon as it will be dead, the burden will... The weight will increase. Is it not? What do you think? The weight will increase. Not the same weight. So, so long people are materialistic, the burden will increase. And so long people are spiritualistic, there will be no burden. So bharavataranaya anye bhuvo nava ivodadhau. Just like if there is a boat, then you can cross over the sea or the river with the help, so when you are Krsna conscious, then you can cross over the sea of nescience very easily. Bhuvo nava iva udadhau, sidantya bhuri-bharena. Bhuri-bharena, very heavily burdened. So she was lamenting, "My Lord, save me." So the conclusion is that if people become simply atheistic or materialistic... Materialistic means atheistic. And then the weight of the earth, or any planet, will increase and the situation will degrade, and everyone will be unhappy and there will be restlessness. And at that time, Krsna comes. He says, yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati [Bg. 4.7].

So at the present moment, the actually it is overburdened by the material activities. So Krsna has descended already. Krsna has descended already. Nama-rupe kali-kale krsna avatara. Krsna has taken His incarnation in the form of Hare Krsna maha-mantra. So if people take to it, chanting Hare Krsna maha-mantra, the present situation of the world can be favorable for our living, and atmosphere will change. Therefore the Krsna consciousness movement is meant for this purpose, to give people relief from all these burdens so that they can peacefully live, understand the value of life, and become spiritualized so they live peacefully in this life and go back to home, back to Godhead. That is the mission of the Krsna consciousness movement.

Thank you very much. (end)

"Seeing Krishna 24 Hours A Day"

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.7.2-4
Durban, October 14, 1975

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: So I shall try to speak some of the preliminary important slokas from Srimad-Bhagavatam, how Srimad-Bhagavatam was compiled by Vyasadeva under the instruction of Sri Narada Muni.

So the description was given by Suta Gosvami in a very big meeting at Naimisaranya, thousands of years ago, and the Suta Gosvami is describing how Srimad-Bhagavatam was compiled.

Sri suta uvaca

brahma-nadyam sarasvatyam
asramah pascime tate
samyaprasa iti prokta
rsinam satra-vardhanah

There is a place, Samyaprasa, above Haridvara, there Vyasadeva's asrama was situated on the river Brahmanadi, Sarasvati, on the western side, pascime tate. Rsinam satra-vardhanah, there all the great sages and saintly persons used to perform sacrifice. Tasmin asrame, tasmin sva asrame vyaso badari-sanda-mandite, the asrama was surrounded by berry trees, badari-sanda. Sanda means trees. Asino 'pa upasprsya pranidadhyau manah svayam. So in that asrama... Formerly, big, big saintly persons, they used to live in forest asrama. Now they have to come far away from asrama to South Africa because people have forgotten. Formerly, big, big persons, they used to visit the asrama, but nowadays people are not interested. Anartha. They are captivated by the material, external energy. It is said that... Not only now, formerly also, but formerly the number of people who were not interested were very, very small. At the present moment, the number of interested people are very, very small. That is the difference. Kali-yuga. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He inaugurated this Krsna consciousness movement, that people in this age are no more interested in their value of life. They are in darkness. Therefore Vaisnava, under the instruction of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, should go door to door, country to country, town to town, and preach Krsna consciousness for their benefit.

He said:

prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama
sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama

Caitanya Mahaprabhu desired that on the surface of the globe, as many towns and villages are there, the Krsna consciousness movement should be spread. And everyone, Indians especially, was advised to take up this mission and preach. He said:

bharata-bhumite haila manusya-janma yara
janma sarthaka kari' kara para-upakara
[Cc. Adi 9.41]

Para-upakara means to do well to others. This is India's mission. India's mission is to elevate outside Indians. Because outside India, people are interested only how to make money and live materially comfortably. They do not know anything more than that. This is anartha. This is anartha. People have become interested only in bodily comforts. They do not know that we are not this body, we are spirit soul, and we have got different interest of the spirit soul than the bodily interest. The bodily interest is there, even in cats and dogs. They also take care of the body, as much as possible by them. Similarly, if we simply take care of the body and do not take care of my self -- what I am, what is my necessity -- then it is suicidal. That is going on all over the world. People are interested only in bodily comforts. They do not know that within this body there is spirit soul, and he has got a different type of business or mission. That we have forgotten.

Therefore Vyasadeva has given us this literature. The history of this literature is being described,

tasmin sva asrame vyaso
badari-sanda-mandite
asino 'pa upasprsya
pranidadhyau manah svayam

Now Narada Muni instructed him... Narada Muni is Vyasadeva's guru. So Vyasadeva presented before Narada Muni that "I have written so many books, Mahabharata, Puranas, Vedanta-sutra, and Upanisads, and so many things, but I am not feeling very much happy." So Narada Muni instructed him that "You have done so many things -- that is all right -- but you have not described very elaborately about the activities of the Supreme Lord. Therefore you are unhappy. So I advise you that you take up this business in writing. Then you will feel happy." So under his instruction he sat for meditation. He says -- it is there -- asinah apah upasprsya. Before meditation, this is the process, you take water, acamana,

om apavitrah pavitro va
sarvavastham gato 'pi va
yah smaret pundarikaksam
sa bahyabhyantara-sucih
sri visnu sri visnu sri visnu

Three times you have to take water and taste it. That is called upasprsya. So he did it. Asinah apah upasprsya pranidadhyau manah: then he began to concentrate his mind, meditation.

So that is called yoga. This meditation means bhakti-yoga. Meditation, that is the real meaning. Nowadays meditation has become a fashion, but meditation is described in the Vedic literature, dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa pasyanti yam yoginah [SB 12.13.1]. The yogis, they meditate, dhyanavasthita. Dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa, the mind becomes fully absorbed in Krsna consciousness, tad-gatena. Tat means transcendental Absolute Truth, om tat sat. So tad-gatena manasa, mind being... Our mind is very restless, so it is very difficult. Five thousand years ago, when Krsna instructed Arjuna to concentrate his mind, meditate, or meditate upon Supersoul, so Arjuna frankly admitted that it was not possible for him. He said to Krsna, "My dear Krsna, You are advising. That is nice. But it is not possible for me." Cancalam hi manah krsna pramathi balavad drdham. "Mind is so restless, just like wind blowing. So to capture the mind, to make him pacified, it is very difficult job. I don't think I shall be able to do it." Arjuna refused. But Arjuna was a great devotee; therefore Krsna encouraged him. Arjuna did not know anything except Krsna, always thinking of Krsna. Then He encouraged him, that "My dear Arjuna, for you, you are the best yogi." Why? He described:

yoginam api sarvesam
mad-gatenantar-atmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah
[Bg. 6.47]

He is first-class yogi. Who? Yoginam api sarvesam mad-gata, simply thinking of Krsna, mad-gata. Antar-atmana, within the core of heart, always thinking of Krsna. Yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantar-atmana, sraddhavan bhajate yo mam.

So we are teaching this. Krsna consciousness movement means we are teaching our disciples how to think of Krsna twenty-four hours. This is Krsna consciousness. And the simple method is to chant,

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

So our, this is the process, we have got this bead bag, and within this bag there is bead, and we chant each... We capture each bead and chant,

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

One bead equals sixteen times, so the whole bead chain there is hundred and eight. So one round means about seventeen hundred. In this way, our disciples are advised to chant at least sixteen rounds. This is our daily duty. It takes about two hours, and after that we are engaging so many other businesses. Somebody is typing or printing books, somebody is going to sell books, somebody is collecting subscription, somebody is cooking for the temple Deity, Radha-Krsna. So in this way, our inmates or our members are always engaged. Kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc. adi 17.31], this is recommendation of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Somehow or other, be engaged twenty-four hours in Krsna consciousness. Then your life will be successful.

So Krsna advised, yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantar-atmana [Bg. 6.47]. So here Vyasadeva sat in his asrama, and began to meditate means he was thinking of Krsna. Here it is said, bhakti-yogena.

bhakti-yogena manasi
samyak pranihite 'male
apasyat purusam purnam
mayam ca tad-apasrayam

So if we meditate in bhakti-yoga, that is bhakti-yoga, as Krsna advises that yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantar-atmana, sraddhavan... Sraddhavan, with faith and love, if one thinks of Krsna, bhakti-yogena, then everything is revealed to him, revealed to him. That is also confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita,

tesam satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te
[Bg. 10.10]

Krsna says, "Anyone who is engaged satatam." Satatam means twenty-four hours. He has no other thinking except Krsna. Sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayoh. This is spoken about Maharaja Ambarisa. He was the emperor of the whole world, he was doing his duty as a responsible king, but still sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayoh: he fixed his mind at the lotus feet of Krsna. Vacamsi vaikuntha-gunanuvarnane: and when he used to speak, he used to speak about Krsna. Vacamsi vaikuntha-gunanuvarnane. When he was to walk, he used to go to the temple. When he was to hear something, he was hearing Hare Krsna maha-mantra. When he was to smell something, he was smelling the flowers offered at the lotus feet of Krsna. When he was eating, he was tasting the krsna-prasadam, the foodstuff first offered to Krsna. So we can engage our senses in that way, set by such example by Ambarisa Maharaja, how to utilize our senses for Krsna consciousness. That is bhakti-yoga. Hrsikena hrsikesa-sevanam bhaktir ucyate [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. Bhakti means when you engage your senses for the service of the Lord. Just like example set by Maharaja Ambarisa. His example is there, because who can be more busy than a responsible king? He has to do so many political affairs, and still, his mind was fixed up, sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayoh, in Krsna perfectly. This is the perfect.

So here also, Vyasadeva, he applied meditation in bhakti-yoga. Yoga means bhakti-yoga. There are different yogas -- hatha-yoga, jnana-yoga, tapa-yoga, many -- but the ultimate goal of these yo... Yoga means connect, connection, connection with the Lord. So ultimately you have to come to the stage of bhakti-yoga. So here Vyasadeva, bhakti-yogena manasi samyak pranihite 'male. The mind became completely purified, amale. Mala means dirty things, and amala means no dirty things. A means "not." So mind became completely purified by bhakti-yoga. By bhakti-yoga meditation, the mind became cleansed. That is required. Our mission of human life is to, how to cleanse the mind. Mind is not clean. Srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah, hrdy antah-stho hy abhadrani [SB 1.2.17]. Abhadrani, inauspicious things. Abhadrani. Bhadra means very good, auspicious, and abhadra means inauspicious. So in our conditioned state of life, our mind is full with inauspicious things. This is due to rajo-guna and tamo-guna. So if we think of Krsna, meditation, then this rajas-tamo-guna becomes cleansed. Nasta-prayesv abhadresu [SB 1.2.18]. Abhadra, this rajas-tamo-guna. So if we think of Krsna, then gradually, ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12], the mirror of our heart becomes cleansed. The rajas..., rajas means dust, and tamas means darkness. Due to dark dust... Suppose you have to see one mirror. If it is covered with dust, you cannot see. So rajas means the dust, and cannot see, it is darkness, that is tamas. So bhakti-yoga, you can see within the mind clearly everything.

So here, bhakti-yogena manasi samyak pranihite amale. Amale means we can completely clean. So our... What did he see? When if the mind becomes cleansed, apasyat, he could see. Apasyat purusam purnam. Purusam purnam, purusam person, and purnam, complete. We are also person, every individual being, but we are not purnam. We are apurnam. The purnam is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, complete. Complete with everything, that is purnam. We are trying to be purnam, but it is not possible. We can be purified, but because we are very small particle, mamaivamsa... Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita, that we living entities, we are small particles. Just like the fire and the spark. The spark is also fire, but very small particle. Similarly, we are, although fire, when as good as God in quality, just like the spark and the big fire, but the spark is very small. It can burn a small portion. Suppose a spark falls on your floor, a spot can burn. But big fire can burn. That is the distinction between God and ourselves. We are also God, but we are not purnam God. That is Krsna. Isvarah paramah krsnah [Bs. 5.1]. Krsnas tu bhagavan svayam.

So Vyasadeva, he is also living entity, although he is empowered, so apasyat purusam purnam, he saw the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And mayam ca tad-apasrayam, and the back side is maya. Maya means the external energy. Just like if you stand facing the sun, the back side of your, there is a big shadow, that is maya. So both things are there, the purusam, the Krsna, and the maya also. Both things he saw. But He is not affected by maya. This is the special significance of Krsna. Although maya is there, he says, mayam ca tad-apasrayam. Maya is there, but Krsna is not influenced by maya, but He is controller of maya. Therefore He is described, isvarah paramah krsnah [Bs. 5.1]. Isvara means controller. We are controlled by maya, but Krsna is the controller of maya. That is the difference. We are not controller; we are controlled. In the next verse, it is described, therefore, yaya sammohito jiva. This maya is illusion, is illusion to the jiva, to the living entities, not to Krsna. One who thinks Krsna as like us, they are mistaken. Mudha. They have been described in the Bhagavad-gita, avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritam: [Bg. 9.11] "Because I am come just like a human being, these rascals, mudhas, asses..." Mudha means asses. The example of mudha, just like in our vernacular language, we condemn some person who is useless, gadha. So gadha, that is mudha. Gadha, why he is condemned? Because he does not know his interest. He works under one washerman and loads tons of cloth on the back, and the washerman gives a morsel of grass. And he stands the whole day, again carrying back the big tons of cloth. But why he is gadha? This grass can be had anywhere, but he is thinking, "The washerman is supplying me grass; therefore I must carry his burden." Therefore he is gadha, ass. (laughs) He can get grasses anywhere, but he is thinking that "This Mr. Washerman is so kind that he is giving me grass, so I have to bear his cloth." So the karmis, they are like that. They are thinking that "Unless we work, we cannot get our grass." Therefore they have been described in the sastra as asses, mudha. Mudha. Mudho 'yam nabhijanati [Bg. 7.25].

So these mudhas, these asses, they consider Krsna as one of us. Avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritam, param bhavam ajanantah [Bg. 9.11]. Param bhavam ajanantah, they do not know what is the value of Krsna. Therefore the Krsna consciousness movement is there to teach people to understand properly Krsna. And what will be the result? The result will be, janma karma ca me divyam yo janati tattvatah [Bg. 4.9]. If anyone simply understands Krsna, why He comes here, yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata, tadatmanam srjamy aham [Bg. 4.7]. So this is divyam, this is not ordinary birth. Ordinary birth, then why, not only in India and other parts of the world, the Krsna's birthday is celebrated very pompously? If He would have been an ordinary man, then why people are interested? No. Therefore janma, His janma is divyam. That is transcendental, that is not ordinary birth. Therefore you worship the birthday of Krsna, everyone, every Hindu, every Indian. Even Muhammadans, they also observe. In India, there are many Muhammadans, they also observe Krsna's birthday.

So apasyat purusam purnam, Krsna is purna-purusa. There is no lack of everything. Sad-aisvaryam purnam, six kinds of opulences: riches, fame, strength, beauty, knowledge, and renunciation. He is full. That is called purnam, apasyat purusam purnam. And mayam ca tad-apasrayam. This maya also there, but Krsna is not affected by maya. That is described in the Bhagavad-gita, daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14]. It is duratyaya for the living entities, not for Krsna, because Krsna is the controller and we are controlled. Therefore in the next verse it is said, yaya sammohito jiva. Jiva, we living entities, we are being controlled by this maya, sammohita. Sammohita means illusion. Mohita means captivated, and sammohita, sam means sam, fully, fully. We are... You see all these conditioned souls, they are captivated by this material energy. Just like you all Indian, you have come here so far. Many people go, I have also come. But the some of us we have come, being allured by maya, and some may have come for other purposes. So generally, these jivas, the living entities, they are allured by this maya. The Vyasadeva saw two things: Krsna, the purusam purnam; and His illusory energy. So this illusory energy is not controller of Krsna. Just like darkness. Darkness, you have got experience. Here at night we are experiencing darkness, but there is no darkness in the sun. The sun is there in the sky. Because the sun is not here, therefore it is darkness. But as soon the sun will appear in the morning, there will be no more darkness.

krsna -- surya-sama; maya haya andhakara
yahan krsna tahan nahi mayara adhikara

You haven't got to drive away darkness by some separate endeavor. You simply get the Krsna sun (to) rise up, then your darkness will go out. This maya will go. If you remain without Krsna consciousness, then it is said, yaya sammohito jiva. You will be revealed that illusion. Yaya sammohito jiva atmanam tri-gunatmakam. Atmanam. We ourself, the spirit soul, we are covered by this body, tri-gunatmakam. This body means it is created by the material nature. In somebody the quality of goodness is prominent, somebody the quality of passion is prominent, and in somebody the quality of ignorance is prominent. So according to this prominence of the particular modes of nature, quality, there is division: brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra. Where there is prominence of the quality of goodness, that is brahmana. When there is prominence of the quality of passion, that is ksatriya. When there is prominence of the quality of mixture -- there is mixture also -- that is vaisya. And when there is quality of the prominence of ignorance, that is sudra.

So everything is described in the Bhagavad-gita. If you read carefully then you'll understand things as they are. That is our mission. We have published all these authentic books, Bhagavad-gita As It Is, and you can read them. The human life is meant for that, that here maya is deluding us, yaya sammohito jiva atmanam tri-gunatmakam. Atmanam, I am self. I am spirit soul, part and parcel of God. I am eternal. I am ever illuminated. But I am thinking, "I am Indian," "I am American," "I am Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am Christian," "I am man," "I am woman," "I am this and that," so on -- designations. So bhakti means we have to become free from all these designations. Sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam [Cc. Madhya 19.170], this is called upadhi. Upadhi means designation. So the Krsna consciousness movement means how to become free from these designations. That is Krsna consciousness. The whole trouble in the world is due to these designations. We are part and parcel of God. We're very much intimately related with God. But, on account of this designation, we are each other's enemies. Even in faraway countries the Europeans are there, the Indians are there, the Africans are there. But, on account of this bodily designation, separated -- European quarter, Indian quarter, this quarter, that quarter, this designation.

So this is here, yaya sammohito jiva, by these designations. All these living entities, they are captivated by these designations. Yaya sammohito jiva atmanam tri-gunatmakam. He is thinking that the spirit soul has become Indian, American, African, or bird, beast. No, tri-guna. Paro 'pi, although he is transcendental to all these designations, manute anartham. Unnecessarily we are creating separative confusion. Manute anartham, tat-krtam cabhipadyate. And by that designation, he is thinking, "I am Indian, I must act as Indian," "I am European, I must act as European." Tat-krtam ca abhipadyate. This is called anartha: unnecessarily. The spirit soul is originally part and parcel of Krsna. He should develop his Krsna consciousness and go back to home, back to Godhead. That is his real business. But on account of this anartha, created designation, he is suffering. And he is trying to adjust things materially. That will never be possible. Punah punas carvita-carvananam [SB 7.5.30]. You go on trying to adjust things on the material platform, it will never be done. Durasaya. This has been described, durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah. Na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah [SB 7.5.31]. This is durasaya. This hope will never be fulfilled. One must know it certain. If you want to be happy, if you want to be peaceful, if you want to be elevated again to your original, constitutional position, then you take to Krsna consciousness and be happy.

Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. (applause)

Devotee: Anyone have any questions?

Guest (1): (indistinct)

Prabhupada: Karma is the result of your associating with the gunas. Just like disease, a particular type of disease is a result of your contaminating the germ of the disease. The disease is secondary; the first -- your contamination. There are three gunas. That is material nature. You can contaminate the tamo-guna, then you'll get the body of tamo-guna. If you contaminate rajo-guna, then you'll get the body of rajo-guna. And if you contaminate or associate with sattva-guna, then you'll get the body like that. And if you become transcendental above the all these gunas, then you'll become situated in your original, spiritual position. This is the way. Therefore our duty is how to avoid the base contamination. Just like you try to avoid disease -- you take vaccine. Similarly, if you try to associate with the best quality modes of material nature -- goodness -- that is safe for your liberation. And if you contaminate the other two qualities, rajo-guna and tamo-guna, then you'll be more and more entangled. Now I may have this nice human body, but if I contaminate tamo-guna, the next body may be dog's body. Tamo-guna, the animal body, then trees body... There are so many, 8,400,000's of body. Tatha dehantara-praptih. So in the human form of life we should be conscious of what kind of association we shall accept. Therefore we are trying to give association of Krsna consciousness. If you take this association, then you remain uncontaminated by the material qualities -- Krsna consciousness. Then your original, spiritual constitutional position is revived and you'll go back to home, back to Godhead.

Guest (2): With due respect to His Holiness A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, may I know why it is the living entity (indistinct) the separation from the supreme power, Lord Krsna? Thank you.

Prabhupada: That is not very difficult to understand. Just like in your Johannesburg there are so many people. Why not all of them come here? Some of them might have gone to the liquor shop; some of them might have gone to the hotels. So it is your option. The three qualities are there. Now it is up to you where to go. But if you know that by associating with the Krsna conscious people you'll be benefited, get knowledge -- then come here. And if you do not know -- in ignorance -- then go liquor shop, hotel, restaurant. So after all, we are part and parcel of God. God is fully independent, and we are minute part. The same example, that the spark is minute portion of the fire. It has got the burning capacity -- not exactly like God, but it has got the godly power. There are so many examples. This morning I was discussing that you are living entity, part and parcel of God. You have created one aeroplane, 747, with five hundred passengers and many tons of loads of things, it is flying. So that is your creation. And God's creation is this planet. This is also running one thousand miles per hour, and so many big, big ocean, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and so many big, big mountains, it is also carrying. It is also floating in the air, and the 747 is also floating. That is your creation and this is God's creation. That is the difference. [break] ...quality but not full, not purna. Therefore purusam purnam. God has got the full qual..., not only this one planet -- there are millions of planets floating in the air. You can see the sun planet. It is 1,400,000 bigger than this planet. That is also lying in the one corner. So that is God's creation. You can create a teeny 747, that's all. Therefore your power is there, the similarly, but very, very small quantity. So we have to take care of our teeny power. Just like the spark. The spark, put, put... But if it somehow or other falls down from the fire it is extinguished. It is extinguished. Similarly, we are part and parcel of God, the spark. If we remain with the fire, it is beautiful. And if, by chance, we fall down, then you are extinguished. Your brilliancy, the fiery quality, becomes extinguished. So our present position is like that. We have forgotten or fallen from God, so our that little burning power, that is also extinguished. Now we have to revive it, back to home, back to Godhead. Then you'll become happy.

Devotee: Any more questions?

Guest (3): What I would like to ask the Swami a question on... Western world (indistinct) utopia (indistinct) economics or politics. What I would like to understand (indistinct) especially India is the best (indistinct) utopia...

Prabhupada: Why you are bringing in India? Krsna is speaking not for India -- for everyone. What is his question?

Devotee: What is the Eastern or Indian understanding of utopia?

Prabhupada: Utopia?

Devotee: Perfect society.

Prabhupada: Yes. Perfect society is Krsna consciousness. If you accept Krsna as the center... Just like in a family if you accept the head of the family, your father, as the guiding principle, the family's happy. And if you disrupt with the opinion of the father, somebody goes away, somebody's not happy, the family is disturbed. Similarly, if you agree with the instruction of Krsna and God, the whole human society will be peace and prosperity. If you don't agree, disagree, don't agree, disagree, then it is disruption. The instruction is there in the Bhagavad-gita. You take it, you agree to it, and you become happy in this world and next world. (end)

"Learning The Science Of The Soul"

"Learning The Science Of The Soul"

68/10/14 Seatle, Bhagavad-gita 2.20-25

Visnujana: "For the soul there is never birth nor death. Nor, having once been, does he ever cease to be. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, undying and primeval. He is not... [Bg. 2.20]"

Prabhupada: These are the statements of Krsna. Now the constitution of the soul... So far materialists are concerned, they cannot even find out where is the soul. Therefore there are so many theories. Actually, they cannot find out where the soul is situated because material senses cannot approach. The measurement of the soul is stated in the Vedic literature as one ten-thousandth part of the tip of the hair. So there is no possibility of understanding what is soul by material scientists. The only process is to take it from higher authorities like Krsna. Krsna here gives definition of the soul. So we have to accept it. And not blindly accept it, but try to understand as far as possible with your arguments and reason, but this is the actual fact. What is that statement? The soul, definition of soul, Krsna is giving?

Visnujana: "Only the material body of the indestructible, immeasurable and eternal living entity is subject to destruction [Bg. 2.18]. He who thinks that the living entity is the slayer or that the entity is slain does not understand. One who is in knowledge knows that the self slays not nor is slain [Bg. 2.19]."

Prabhupada: Then next?

Visnujana: 20: "For the soul there is never birth nor death. Nor, having once been, does he ever cease to be. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, undying and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain [Bg. 2.20]."

Prabhupada: Yes. Because eternal, therefore how it can be slain? So soul is never slain. The body is slain. Then?

Visnujana: 21: "O Partha, how can a person who knows that the soul is indestructible, unborn, eternal and immutable kill anyone or cause anyone to kill [Bg. 2.21]?" Purport: "Everything has its utility, and a man who is situated in complete knowledge knows how and where to apply a thing for its proper utility. Similarly violence also has its use, and how to apply violence rests with the person in knowledge. Although the justice of the peace awards capital punishment to a person condemned for murder, the justice of the peace cannot be blamed because he orders violence to another according to the codes of justice. In the Manu-samhita,..."

Prabhupada: Manu-samhita, yes.

Visnujana: "...the lawbook for mankind, it is supported that a murderer should be condemned to death so that in his next life he will not have to suffer for the great sin he has committed. Therefore the king's punishment of hanging a murderer is actually beneficial. Similarly when Krsna orders fighting, it must be concluded that violence is for the supreme justice, and as such, Arjuna should follow the instruction, knowing well that such violence committed in the act of fighting for justice is not at all violence. Because at any rate the man, or rather, the soul, cannot be killed. For the administration of justice, so-called violence is permitted. A surgical operation is not meant to kill the patient, but is for his cure. Therefore the fighting to be executed by Arjuna under the instruction of Krsna is with full knowledge, and so there is no possibility of sinful reaction."

Prabhupada: This is the distinction between violence and nonviolence. People are very much advocate of nonviolence, but they are committing, according to their estimation, they are committing every moment violence. But from higher standard there is practically no violence and the things which apparently appear to be violence, if it is properly executed... Just like under the order of high court judge, one body is being executed. So that is not violence. A justice of higher order is not meant for committing violence. It is justice. Similarly, when, under the direction of the supreme justice, Krsna, anything is done, apparently, although it appears violence, it is not violence. It is justice. This is to be understood. Go on.

Visnujana: 22: "As a person puts on a new garment, giving up old ones, similarly the soul accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless one [Bg. 2.22]." Purport.

Prabhupada: In a different way, in varied ways, Krsna is trying to make us understand the constitutional position of the soul. Yes.

Visnujana: "Change of body by the atomic individual soul is an accepted fact. Even some of the modern scientists who do not believe in the existence of the soul but at the same time cannot explain the source of energy from the heart, they have to accept continuous changes of body which appear from childhood to boyhood and from boyhood to youth and again from youth to old age. From old age the change is transferred to another body. This has already been explained in the previous verse. Transference of the atomic individual soul to another body is also made possible by the grace of the Supersoul. The Supersoul fulfills the desire of the soul as one friend fulfills the desire of another. The Vedas, such as the Mundaka Upanisad, as well as the Svetasvatara Upanisad..."

Prabhupada: Svetasvatara.

Visnujana: "...confirm this concept of two kinds of souls by comparing them to two friendly birds sitting on the same tree. One of the birds, the individual atomic soul, is eating the fruit of the tree, and the other bird is simply watching his friend. Of these two birds, although they are the same in quality, one is captivated by the fruits of the material tree, while the other is simply witnessing his activity. Krsna is the witnessing bird and Arjuna is the eating bird. Although they are friends, one is still the master and the other is the servant."

Prabhupada: That is the eternal relationship. These are confirmed in Vedic literature just like Svetasvatara Upanisad, Mundaka Upanisad. The system is whatever is mentioned in the Vedas, that is authoritatively accepted. That is the Vedic understanding. If there is some evidence in the Vedas... Just like in law court, if there is some section in the lawbook, then the lawyers, the judge, accept it. "Yes, it is like this." Similarly knowledge. Vedas means knowledge. So perfect knowledge is there. Therefore if the evidence is there in the statement of Vedas, that is the proof. Sabda-pramana. There are three kinds of evidences. Pratyaksa, direct sense perception, and sabda-pramana, evidence from the Vedic statement, and anumana, aitihya, historical or hypothesis. So out of all evidences, the evidence which is called, derived from Vedic statement, that is accepted as most authoritative. Therefore Mundaka Upanisad and Svetasvatara Upanisad, they are Vedas. There is statement that two birds are sitting on the same tree. The tree is compared, the body is compared with the tree. And two birds, namely the Supersoul, Krsna, and the living entity, individual soul, they are sitting together. And one is eating the fruit of the tree and the other is simply witnessing. This is our position. The other friendly bird, Krsna or Supersoul, is giving us opportunity to act with this body as I like. He's giving us opportunity. Ksetra-jna. I am the proprietor of this body. I have been allowed to utilize this body as I like. And the facility is given by the Supersoul.

So if I like, I can utilize this body for higher grade of life. Krsna will give us all facilities. And if I like, I can utilize this body for lower grade of life. Krsna will give us facilities. So He's always friendly. And He gives us also friendly advice, that "Don't act independently. Just act in Krsna consciousness under Me. Then you'll be happy." That is His actual instruction. But the living entity does not care for the instruction of the Supersoul. He wants to act independently, and he has to suffer the consequence. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita in the Fourth Chapter. Yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah [Bg. 3.9]. Yajna means Visnu or Krsna. Whatever you do, or what... Not whatever you do. You have to do only for Krsna. Yajnarthe karma. Whatever you act. Never mind. Whatever you do. But you have to act for Krsna. Yajnarthe karma anyatra. Otherwise, karma-bandhanah, you'll be bound up by the reaction. The same example: just a person acting on behalf of some superior authority, government, personally he has no responsibility because he is acting on behalf of the supreme authority. Just like a manager or agent, attorney. Just like we signed one lease agreement. That Mr. Brown, he is acting as attorney on behalf of the landlord. So he has no responsibility. He is acting in landlord capacity or landlord consciousness. He is trying to save the interest of the landlord as far as possible. But if there is any mistake, the landlord will suffer or gain. He has nothing to do. Similarly, if we work in Krsna consciousness, if there is something wrong... Because we can act two ways, wrongly or rightly. That's all. If we do rightly, it is all right. Even if we don't do it rightly, wrongly, still, it is right because the cause is the Supreme. Yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah [Bg. 3.9]. The best, safest way of acting is to act in Krsna consciousness or under the order of Krsna. Or if somebody says "Where is Krsna?" No. Krsna is there. Just like Bhagavad-gita is there, and the explanation of Bhagavad-gita by the representative of Krsna is there. So Krsna, being absolute, His representative, His words are nondifferent from Him. We should not think that "Krsna is not in my presence." As soon as Bhagavad-gita is there and as soon as we understand Bhagavad-gita as it is, that means we are hearing directly Krsna. So if we do according to the instruction of Krsna, as Arjuna did, then there is no reaction. We are free. Yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra. Then you go on.

Visnujana: "Although they are friends, one is still the master, the other is the servant."

Prabhupada: This friend is giving us facility. Krsna is always our friend. Natural friend. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Suhrdam sarva-bhutanam [Bg. 5.29]. Suhrdam means suhrt. There are different kinds of friend, but here... In Sanskrit, for different kinds of friend, there are different names. Just like one friend is called bandhu. One is called mitra, one friend is called suhrt. There are differences. Therefore they are different words. Just like in English language there is only one word "friend." But in Sanskrit, because it is perfect language, friend -- what kind of friend. So Krsna says that "I am suhrdam sarva-bhutanam." Suhrt, suhrt means he's such a friend... Just like you have got a friend. Sincerely he wants how you shall be happy. Just like your mother. Mother is also friend. Or wife, devoted wife. She is also friend. So mother, wife, or any such relative, or father. Or there are many persons in our ordinary relationships. So they want actually that "My, this friend be happy." That is real friend, suhrt. And mitra, social friendship. Bandhu, official friendship. But suhrt, suhrt means one who actually desires good of his friend. "Sincere friend" which you describe in English. So Krsna is suhrt. He's always expecting my good. How I shall be good. Therefore He is canvassing me: "Please, you surrender unto Me." Just like father says, "My dear boy, why you are acting independently? Foolishly you are suffering. Just surrender unto me. I shall give you, I shall give you protection." Similarly Krsna is friend like that. He's always asking. He is going with me in any type of body. Even if I get the body of a dog, Krsna is always there with me. That is stated in Bhagavad-gita, isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. Isvara, the Supreme Lord, is staying within the heart of every living entity. So every living entity means He is staying even with the cats, dogs, hogs, or any lower type of animal. He has no hesitation because He is not living with him. He's living in Vaikuntha, but He's so friendly that wherever this friend is going, He's also going there. He is with... As Paramatma, He is doing friendly activities. He's sending His bona fide servant as spiritual master. He's coming as incarnation. He's coming as devotee, Lord Caitanya. He's helping us in so many ways. But we are so foolish we are not accepting Him. You see. He's so... Nobody can be better friend than Krsna. But we are so much unfortunate, so much captivated by the external energy that we don't accept Krsna as friend. We accept so many other things as friend. Go on.

Visnujana: "Forgetfulness of this relationship by the atomic soul is the cause of one changing his position from one tree to another or from one body to another."

Prabhupada: Now here... He's giving trouble to the friend. I am giving to my sincere friend Krsna simply trouble. Just like a bird is flying from one tree to another. The friend bird is also there. He has no business, he has no interest to be there because he is not eating anything from the tree. He has nothing to do. But because his friend is there, he goes. So we are changing our body as the bird, the changing from one tree to another. But Krsna, the supreme bird, is also going with me. Go on.

Visnujana: "The jiva, the soul, is struggling very hard in the tree of the material body. But as soon as he agrees to accept the other bird..."

Prabhupada: That's all.

Visnujana: "...as the supreme spiritual master..."

Prabhupada: Then here is the solution. He's simply taking unnecessary trouble. Krsna says that "I'll supply you everything. There is no necessity of going from here to there." No. But I'm not accepting it. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9]. One who understands this, "how Krsna is helping me, how He is my, the greatest well-wisher, friend," immediately we can stop all these problems of life and go back to Godhead, go back to home.

Visnujana: "But as soon as he agrees to accept the other bird as the supreme spiritual master as Arjuna has agreed to do, by voluntary surrender unto Krsna for instruction, the subordinate bird immediately becomes free from all lamentation."

Prabhupada: Yes. As Arjuna has accepted. Arjuna was talking with Krsna as friend, but he has accepted. Although he is friend, he has accepted Him as spiritual master. The significance is that as soon as you accept somebody as spiritual master, you cannot argue. You have to accept. You have to accept. Therefore the selection of spiritual (master) must be very scrutinizing. You cannot accept anyone as spiritual master. You must be very much satisfied that here is a person who can solve the problems of my life. Just like Arjuna thought. He plainly said that "The problem which is before me, I know, beyond You, besides You, nobody can make solution." That is the way of accepting spiritual master. When one is fully convinced that "Here is a person who can actually solve the problems of my life," then one should accept spiritual master. In the Hari-bhakti-vilasa there is such process that one should accept a spiritual master after associating with him for some time. Similarly, the spiritual master also shall accept somebody as disciple after associating with him for some time, whether he is eligible or not. This is the process. Go on.

Visnujana: 23: "The soul can never be cut into pieces by any weapon nor can he be burned by fire, nor moistened by water nor withered by the wind [Bg. 2.23]." Purport.

Prabhupada: This is the distinction of the soul being spirit. You take anything of this material world, they can be burned. It is the question of temperature only. Even iron is being burned, any metal, any hard thing, stone is being burned, everything is being burned. But here it is said that soul cannot be burned. So does it mean that it is stronger than iron and stone? But it is very fragmental, minute, atomic portion. But it cannot be burned. So all these symptoms... Cannot be burned, cannot be cut into pieces. So here the Mayavadi theory will fail. If the soul cannot be cut into pieces, then how the soul has become enwrapped with maya? They give the example, ghatakasa-potakasa. Of course, they say that it is covered, it is not cut into pieces. But the soul is separated, I mean to say, a separate identity constitutionally. That will be confirmed in the Fifteenth Chapter. Mamaivamso jiva-bhutah sanatanah [Bg. 15.7]. Sanatana means eternally. Eternally the example just like fire and fire sparks. The fire sparks are part and parcel of the fire. Similarly the soul, individual soul, is part and parcel of the Supreme. But that part and parcel is eternally. Not that being covered by maya, it has become individual. No. Individual permanently. Permanently individual. As God is permanently individual, so every one of us living entities, we are permanent. It is not that by maya we have been separated, cut into pieces, fragment. It is clearly stated it cannot be cut. If it is not cut, cannot be cut, then how I have become fragment? That I am not cut fragment. I am eternal fragment. That is confirmed in the Fifteenth Chapter, sanatana, eternal. Try to understand. Just like you take a paper, you cut into pieces. That is cut. But here it is said that the spirit cannot be cut. Then how we have become fragment pieces, different individuals? That means we are eternally so. We are eternally individual. It is not that by the influence of maya you have been cut into pieces. No. Here it is said you cannot be cut. Another, it cannot be burned. If you study one verse of Bhagavad-gita, you understand so many things. It cannot be burned. Now if it cannot be burned, then in fire also there is soul. The materialists say that in the sun globe, it is impossible to have living entities there. No. Because it cannot be burned. So impossible, possible. So this Vedic knowledge that sun planet is a planet just like other planets, and it is fiery, and the residents are also fiery body. So why one should be astonished that there is living entity? Then why they should deny that there is no living entity? They are denying that in the moon planet also there is no living entity. Why? Why? Living entity can be everywhere. Sarva-ga. This very word has been used in Bhagavad-gita. Sarva-ga. You'll find it. Sarva-ga means he can go everywhere. He can live in the fire also. And actually we see that in the air there is living entity, in the water there is living entity, in the land there is living entity. So why not in the fire? Fire is one of the elements like air, water, land. So if in other elements there is possibility of living beings, why not in one? What is the reason? What is the argument? And Vedic literature gives us information that in the fire there is germ also. Just like in water there is germ; in the earth there is germ; in the air there is germ, living entities. Similarly in the fire there is also. And here it is said it cannot be burned. Even it is in the fire, there is no possibility of being burned. So why not in the fire? It requires a different type of body only. That's all. Just like the fish. It has got a different type of body. It is living very comfortably in the water. You have got a different type of body. You are living in the land very comfortably. You cannot live in the water. The fish cannot live in the land. Similarly, in the fiery planet, just like sun, there must be living entities. There must be. You cannot say by any reason that there is no living entities. How you can say? If it is a fact that living entity cannot be burned. Is it not? Just try to understand. Yes.

Visnujana: 24: "This individual soul is unbreakable, insoluble [Bg. 2.24]."

Prabhupada: Unbreakable, again. The Mayavadi theory that it has broken parts by maya. No. Unbreakable. That means eternally we are individual, separated. Just like we are sitting, all individual. This is our eternal position. Krsna is confirming that "Arjuna, yourself, Myself, and all these people who are assembled here, they're all individuals. They existed in the past, and they'll continue to exist in the future." So this is a confirmed truth, that every living entity is individual and Krsna is also individual. And that is also stated in the Vedas. Nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). He is the chief of all these individual living entities. That is the difference. He is the chief. Just like you have accept me the chief of your group. But that does not mean in all other respects we are all one. You have got the same feeling; I have got the same feeling. You have selected me, or I have got some extraordinary qualification, I am controlling you. Similarly Krsna has got the extraordinary quality by which He can control the whole situation. Otherwise, He is as individual as we are. That's all. The supreme controller. We use this word. That's all. Krsna is... Just like we are sitting face to face, Krsna is like that. You can have that opportunity. Just like Arjuna had the opportunity. Similarly you'll have the opportunity. You have to take the opportunity. You'll see Krsna face to face, talk with Him face to face, play with Him face to face. It is so nice, Krsna consciousness. Yes. Go on.

Visnujana: "He is everlasting, all-pervading, unchangeable, immovable, and eternally the same."

Prabhupada: Everlasting. This is the... Everlasting. Then why I am not everlasting now? This is my diseased condition. People should take it like this. Here it is stated that the living entity is everlasting, but my present position is not everlasting. I'm temporary. So why shall I be in this temporary..., such abominable condition? I am everlasting. So they are so rascal fools they do not search out how He can be everlasting. They are trying to (sic) oint this body. That's all. Everlasting body by ointment, you see? That is not possible. That is their foolishness. They are trying to make this body, by so-called science, everlasting. That will never be possible. Your everlasting position is that you are spirit soul. You have to transfer yourself in that healthy condition. Not this diseased condition. This is disease. My birth and death is disease. You have to cure this disease. That is your problem, real problem. But they are not serious about solving this real problem, birth and death. They are thinking, "So long I live, let me enjoy senses as far as possible, and let me enjoy." That's all. That's their philosophy.
Child's philosophy. Just like child does not look forward his future. He's very playful. He sees that "This playing will make me happy." Similarly, these rascals, they are simply enjoying senses, forgetting their future life. So this is a rascal civilization. This is not a good civilization. You see? Childish civilization. However they may be proud of their advancement of knowledge, it is childish civilization because they have no future. Everlasting. "How I am going to be everlasting," they do not think of it. You see? This one word can give so many volumes of thoughts to the real philosopher, to the real thinker. Here it is stated that the living entity is everlasting, and where is that living entity everlasting? Why it is not so? This is the problem.

Visnujana: "It is said that the soul is invisible, inconceivable [Bg. 2.25]."

Prabhupada: Yes, invisible. That is a fact. I am soul, you are soul, but I cannot see with these eyes. I am seeing your body. Just like I am seeing my son or husband or brother, and as soon as my son or husband or son, anyone, dies, "Oh, my son is gone." Where has your son gone? He's lying here. Why do you say gone? "No, he's gone. He's gone." Then what is that son? Have you ever seen him? That is the problem. He has never seen his son or husband. He has seen this body as husband or son or father. Therefore invisible. You cannot see even a small particle of soul which is spiritual, you want to see God immediately without preparing your eyes? Just see. They want to see God. They cannot see even the small particle of God, the soul, and they want to see immediately God. Yes, one can see God. But not immediately. You have to prepare your eyes. You'll see God, you'll see soul, everything. Everything will be visible. At the present moment it is invisible because we have got material eyes. With material eyes we cannot see anything spiritual. It is blocked. Go on.

Visnujana: "Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body [Bg. 2.25]."

Prabhupada: Yes. Because we cannot see. Just like the same example. A man is dead, his relative is crying. He says he's gone. He's still seeing. The body is there. That means he has never studied who is his relative. Then... At least, he must know after death, that the body is not my relative. Something else beyond this body.

Visnujana: Purport: "As described above, the magnitude of the soul is such that for our material calculation he cannot be detected even by the most powerful microscope. Therefore he is invisible. As far as his existence is concerned, nobody can establish his experimental stability beyond the proof of sruti, or Vedic wisdom."

Prabhupada: Yes. Now here Krsna says that "Don't care for this body. There is soul." That is sruti. Sruti means you hear from Krsna; then you understand. Otherwise there is no possibility to understand. The same example, as I have several times said, that who is your father? That you can under(stand) simply by hearing from your mother. That's all. The mother says, "He is your father." What is the evidence? Hearing from the mother. That's all. Similarly anything spiritual, spiritual identity, spiritual God, spiritual kingdom, you have to learn simply by hearing from authorities. There is no other process. There is no other second process. Simply we have to hear. Just the same example. Who is your father? You have to simply believe your mother. Even if he... Of course, it is not expected that she'll give a false information. Understanding, the mother is nice, she'll give me. So that is the only way. You have to believe your mother, and that's all. Similarly, if you want to understand anything spiritual, you have to take information by hearing from such authorities as Krsna or His representative, and there is no other alternative. Other alternative, it will ever remain invisible and not understandable and so many things, negative. Yes.

Visnujana: "We have to accept this truth because there is no other source for understanding the existence of the soul, although it is a fact by perception. There are many things we have to accept solely on grounds of superior authority."

Prabhupada: Yes.

Visnujana: "No one can deny the existence of his father based on the authority of his mother. There is no other source for understanding..."

Prabhupada: Now everyone knows that "When I am born, there must have been somebody my father." This is the conclusion. "And now, who is my father?" That is evidence to be taken from mother. Similarly nobody can deny the existence of God because everything has got a father, generator. So therefore this whole creation, there must be generator. Now how we can see the father? Through the mother, Vedas. That's all. As we understand our father through the mother, similarly through the mother of Vedic knowledge you can understand what is God. Go on.

Visnujana: "Similarly there is no other source of understanding the soul except by studying the Vedas. In other words the soul is inconceivable to human experimental knowledge. The soul is conscious and consciousness. That also is the statement of the Vedas and we have to accept that. Unlike the bodily changes there is no change for the soul. As eternally unchangeable, he remains atomic always in comparison to the infinite Supreme Soul."

Prabhupada: Yes. Unchangeable means... The Mayavada theory is that "Now I am finite. I shall become infinite." That's wrong. How you can be? Eternal. Eternally infinite. You'll eternally remain infinite. You cannot be equal with God, the infinite. That is not possible. You'll have to remain as subordinate.

Visnujana: "The Supreme Soul is infinite and the atomic soul is infinitesimal. Therefore the infinitesimal soul being unchangeable can never become equal to the infinite soul."

Prabhupada: Yes. This is a common sense argument. How it can be? If it is equal to the infinite, how he has become finite? They cannot answer. The impersonalists cannot answer. How he has become finite? They'll simply answer, "It is maya." Then maya is greater than the infinite? Then maya becomes greater than the infinite. Then that God is no more infinite because maya covers the Supreme, so how He is infinite? He becomes finite? The common sense is that finite Brahman is covered by maya. Not the infinite. Therefore duality. Finite and infinite living entities. Krsna is infinite, and the ordinary living entities are finite. (sound of bells from ice cream truck) What is that? (music of ice cream truck)

Visnujana: Ice cream truck.

Prabhupada: Oh, ice cream. (laughter) You are taking ice cream? Huh?

Visnujana: No. They go up and down the street.

Prabhupada: Canvassing?

Tamala Krsna: Yes.

Prabhupada: Don't take ice cream. (music continues louder in background) (laughs) This is maya. (laughter) "Come on, come on, enjoy me. Come on, come on, enjoy me." (laughs) As soon as you enjoy, you become entrapped. That's all. Just like fishing tackle. They throw the tackle and invite the fish, "Come on, come on, enjoy me. Come on, come on, enjoy me." As soon as -- Ap! (laughter) Finished. Then, (sound imitating fish) "Where you go now? Come on in my bag. Yes, I'll fry you nicely." You see? So these are all explained in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. The fish is losing his life by eating, by tongue. He cannot check the dictation of the tongue; therefore he is losing his life. You see? Similarly the animals, deer, in the jungle, the hunter, they play very nice flute and all of them assemble to hear how he's nice, and then he keeps him in the trap, loses his life. That means hearing. Tasting, hearing. And the elephant is caught by sexual... Do you know how elephant is captured? Yes. A she-elephant is trained, goes to the male elephant, and it follows, and the male elephant is dropped into a, what is called, big pot, pit. Yes. Then he remains there for some time. Then he's shackled and he's taken away. In this way there are different examples of senses. The, what is called? That black, what is called, bhramara? English? That black big fly? (makes buzzing sound) Onnnhhh.

Madhudvisa: Bumblebee?

Prabhupada: It may be.

Revatinandana: Horsefly.

Prabhupada: It is entrapped by smelling lotus flower, within the lotus flower, and loses its life. So by different sense gratification, the different kinds of animals, they are losing their life. And we have got all our senses active. So where we are? These examples are for animal kingdom whose one sense is only active. But our all senses are active. Then what is our position? You see? This example is given in the Bhagavata. A man has got six wives, and he has entered the house, and all the wives have captured him, "You come to my room." You see? So one has taken his one hand, another has taken another hand, one has taken his one leg, one has taken, so he's like this: "Where shall I go?" You see? So this is our position. Human being, whether they shall control the senses... Instead of controlling the senses, they are becoming servant of senses and losing their, this great opportunity of human life. Yes.

Visnujana: People that are concerned with advancing to the higher planets, do they have more opportunity to become entrapped?

Prabhupada: No. Anyone within this material world, they are entrapped by this sense enjoyment. Either in higher planets or lower planets. Just like animal kingdom there is sense impetus, and human being also. What this human being? We are civilized being, what we are doing? The same thing. Eating, sleeping, mating. The same thing as the dog is doing. So anywhere in the material world, either in the higher planet or in the lower planet, this sense gratification is prominent. Only in the spiritual world there is no sense gratification. There is simply an endeavor to satisfy Krsna. That is... Here everyone is trying to satisfy his senses. That is the law of material world. That is material life. So long you try to satisfy your senses, that is your material life. And as soon as you turn your self to satisfy the senses of Krsna, that is your spiritual life. It's a very simple thing. Instead of satisfying... Hrsikena hrsikesa-sevanam [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. That is bhakti. You have got senses. You have to satisfy. Senses, with senses you have to satisfy. Either you satisfy yourself... But you do not know. The conditioned soul does not know that satisfying the Krsna's senses, his senses will be automatically satisfied. The same example. Just like pouring water to the root... Or these fingers, part and parcel of my body, giving foodstuff here to the stomach, automatically the fingers will be satisfied. This secret we are missing. We are thinking we shall be happy by trying to satisfy our senses. Krsna consciousness means don't try to satisfy your senses. You try to satisfy the senses of Krsna; automatically your senses will be satisfied. This is the secret of Krsna consciousness. The opposite party, they are thinking, "Oh, why shall I satisfy? Why shall I work for Krsna the whole day and night? Let me try for the karmis." Just like you are working whole day and night for Krsna, they are thinking, "What fools they are. We are very intelligent. We are working for our own sense gratification whole day and night, and why they are working for Krsna?" This is the difference between materialist and spiritualist. The spiritualist's endeavor is to work whole day and night strenuously without any hurt(?) simply for Krsna. That is spiritual life. And the materialist means the same endeavor, always trying to satisfy their personal senses. That is the difference, materialistic and spiritual. So Krsna consciousness movement means that we have to train our senses to satisfy Krsna. That's all. So long in other, previous, many, many thousands and millions of lives, we have simply tried to satisfy our senses, personal senses. Let this life be dedicated for satisfying Krsna's senses. That is Krsna consciousness. One life. We have, several lives, we have tried to satisfy our personal senses. Let this life, at least one life, let me try, what happens. So we are not loser. Even we feel inconveniences by not satisfying our senses, but we are not loser. Try simply to satisfy Krsna's senses; then it will be all right. So we shall stop. What is the time?

Devotee: Seven o'clock.

Prabhupada: All right. Stop. Chant Hare Krsna.

Madhudvisa: Prabhupada? We're reading about the Sixth Chapter of Bhagavad-gita now. And should I wait until you come to that chapter or could I ask you a question now pertaining to that chapter?

Prabhupada: As you like.

Madhudvisa: It mentions dhyana (pronounces "dahayana") and raja-yoga in that chapter. Can you explain the meaning of these two yogas?

Prabhupada: Hm?

Madhudvisa: Dahyana. D-h-y-a-n-a.

Prabhupada: Dhyana. Dhyana-yoga, meditation.

Madhudvisa: That's meditation. And is raja-yoga the same?

Prabhupada: Yes.

Madhudvisa: Both meditation processes?

Virabhadra: You said in your lecture that everybody... I think that's what you said, that everybody in the material world is...in maya. But you can't be in maya.

Prabhupada: How do you think?

Virabhadra: You're spiritual, so you can't be in maya. So how does that work?

Prabhupada: How do you think that I am not in maya?

Virabhadra: Because you're a pure devotee. You see Krsna in everybody.

Prabhupada: (laughs) Yes. Then a pure devotee is not in maya. Do you agree to that?

Virabhadra: Uh huh.

Prabhupada: So are you going to be a pure devotee?

Virabhadra: Me?

Prabhupada: Yes.

Virabhadra: I'm not a pure devotee.

Prabhupada: But you are going to be, trying to be.

Virabhadra: I try to be.

Prabhupada: That's all right. That's all right. That's all right. Yes?

Devotee: In Bhagavad-gita it says that we are one...that spirit soul, I, spirit soul, am one ten-thousandth the tip of a hair.
Prabhupada: Hm?

Devotee: We are very small. One ten-thousandth part of a hair. Since we are unchangeable, does Krsna change His size to be the same size as us so that we can associate with Him when we go back to the spiritual world?

Prabhupada: Yes.

Govinda dasi: Prabhupada? Is it true that you once said something about the Supersoul being the size of the thumb? Where is that information or authority? He's the size of the thumb in human being?

Prabhupada: Yes.

Srimati: In the Caitanya-caritamrta you wrote that Krsna has no arms or legs as we have arms and legs, and His spiritual body and the other is the same. The spiritual body and...

Prabhupada: He has got spiritual arms, spiritual legs. I never said that He has no arms and legs.

Srimati: It said that He has no arms and legs as we know arms and legs.

Prabhupada: Yes. That is the statement in the Vedas. Apani-pado javana grahita.(?) The Supreme Lord has no legs and hands, but still, He accepts whatever we offer. Now we are accepting, we are offering here foodstuff, Krsna. So it is confirmed that He accepts. Now He is... We do not know how far away He is staying in Vaikunthaloka. There is no limit of measurement. Then how He's accepting? It is said that javana, He is accepting our offerings. So He must be accepting with His hand. So He can stretch His hand so many millions and trillions miles away. Therefore when it is said that He has no hand, that means He has no hand like us, limited. But that does not mean He has no hand. He has hand unlimited. Unlimitedly He can stretch. That we cannot conceive. Because we have got this three-feet hand. So Krsna must have at least four-feet. That's all. That frog philosophy. (laughter) Simply imagining. "Ah, Krsna may be very great. So we have got this three-feet, Krsna, let Him have six-feet. That's all." But we cannot imagine how long His hand is. Therefore His hand cannot be compared with this material hand. He has no material hand. That is the version of Vedas. But He has hand. That you cannot measure. Just like Arjuna could not measure when He showed the universal form. So avajananti mam mudha manusim... [Bg. 9.11]. Therefore Krsna says, "Because I am moving amongst them as ordinary human being, they are thinking of Me as one of them." Param bhavam ajanantah. "They do not know what is My background." Param bhavam. "Therefore they fail to understand Me." Mudha. Rascals, fools. Everyone is trying to understand Krsna from the angle of vision as he can understand. Krsna is beyond that. Therefore His name is Adhoksaja, "beyond the limit." He can simply be presented by Himself, revealed. Just like Krsna is revealing Himself to Arjuna. Arjuna is not understanding Krsna by his philosophical speculation. Directly Krsna revealing. This is the process of understanding God. You cannot create your imagination, imaginative God. No. God reveals unto you being pleased upon you by your devotional activities. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau [Brs. 1.2.234]. Just like Krsna says to Arjuna, bhakto 'si priyo 'si. "You are My very dear friend, you are My devotee. Therefore I'll reveal unto you. Not to others." This is the qualification of understanding God, to become devotee.

So our movement is to make people in general devotee. Then he'll understand God. Then his life will be successful. That's all. You be yourself devotee and try to make others devotee. Then both your life and the person who is under your instruction, he, everyone is successful. And without being devotee, you cannot make others devotee. That is also a secret. If you remain nondevotee, you cannot convince others. That is not in your power. Therefore the nondevotee class of men, they cannot understand God, they cannot convince others about God. That's a fact. They'll simply present hodge-podge thing, they do not understand clearly, and they present hodge-podge. That's all. Without being... Bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah [Bg. 18.55]. "If anyone wants to understand Me as I am..." Of course, nobody can understand Krsna as He is, still, as far as possible. That is only through bhakti. Bhaktya, it is stated in the Bhagavad-gita. It doesn't say that through knowledge, philosophical speculation or through hatha-yoga system. No. He says bhaktya, clearly. And in the beginning also He says, "Because you are My bhakta, therefore I shall reveal to you." The whole science is for the devotee. Not for anyone else. Those who are not devotees, their understanding of God is blocked forever. They cannot understand. It is a fact. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva-nasa. If anyone tries to understand these impersonalist Mayavadi philosophers, then his, I mean to say, progress is blocked for good. Not for good, of course. Nothing can be for good. But for the present at least his progress is blocked. Sarva-nasa. Chant. Hare Krsna. (kirtana) (end)
