Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupadaSrila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: Hare Krsna.

nunam pramattah kurute vikarma
yad indriya-pritaya aprnoti
na sadhu manye yata atmano 'yam
(asann api) klesada asa dehah
 [SB 5.5.4]

The real problem of life is not to adjust things materially, change from one form of government to another form of government. These things are temporary things. It will not give relief. And this fighting between one party with another amongst the politicians or the ksatriyas or the administrators, they are going on perpetually. That is not a very new thing. So we should not forget our real life. For ruling over to get political predominance, there may be fighting. That is natural. It is going on. Just like the Battle of Kuruksetra -- it is a fighting between two sections of the same family, who will rule over. So there was fighting, but at the same time, they did not lose Krsna culture. That is the important point. Similarly, India has got a great culture, background, Vedic culture or Krsna culture. Vedic culture means Krsna culture, and Krsna culture means Vedic culture. Vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyam [Bg. 15.15]. So study Veda or Vedanta means to understand Krsna. That is the purpose. Vedais ca sarvair. Veda means knowledge, and anta means end. Vedanta. Vyasadeva, Srila Vyasadeva, he has given us the Vedanta philosophy. What is the purpose? That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita:

sarvasya caham hrdi-sannivisto
mattah smrtir jnanam apohanam ca
vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyam
vedanta-vid vedanta-krt (eva) ca aham
 [Bg. 15.15]

So we should take care of very seriously about this culture of Bhagavad-gita. This is India's property. This Vedic culture, instruction of Bhagavad-gita, was spoken on the land of Bharata-varsa, although it is not meant for a particular class of men or a class of people or in a particular country. It is meant for everyone. Manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye [Bg. 7.3]. Especially for the human being. So our request is that we may fight amongst ourself for political predominance, but why should we forget our real culture, Vedic culture, Krsna consciousness? That is our request. All important men, leaders of the society, they should take this Vedic culture, Krsna consciousness, and not only preach in their own country, but all over the world. If you don't take it, there is a great risk. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita:

asradaddhanah purusa
dharmasyasya parantapa
mam aprapya eva nivartante
mrtyu-samsara-vartmani
 [Bg. 9.3]

Krsna says personally... He comes, yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata, tadatmanam srjamy aham [Bg. 4.7], for the benefit of the human society. Because dharmasya glanir. Dharma is meant for the human society. Dharma is not meant for the cats and dogs. They have no dharma. You cannot have any religious principle or institution in the cat society or dog society. Dharmena hinah pasubhih samanam. Therefore when human society becomes devoid of dharma, then it is animal society. It is no longer human society.

And what is that dharma? I have several times spoken. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. Dharma means the law or the words given by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is dharma. That is the shortcut definition of dharma. "You should do this; you should not do this." Just like the government gives us law, "Keep to the right." So that is law. Although it is very simple thing, "Keep to the right," but that is law. Similarly what Krsna says... Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. If we take it for proper utilization of our this great boon of life, human form of life, then we become dharmi, and our life is successful. What Krsna says, that is not at all difficult. Even a child can perform. What Krsna said? Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. Very simple thing. Krsna says, "Always think of Me." What is the difficulty? Even a child can think of Krsna. If he goes to the temple and if he understands from his parents that "Here is the Deity, Krsna," it impresses. He understands, "Here is Krsna." Because he is simple. So he can also think of Krsna: "I went to the temple, I saw Krsna very nicely dressed, very nicely decorated. Very nice foodstuff was offered, and I got the prasadam." Where is the difficulty? Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto. If you go regularly to see Krsna in the temple and to remember Him, then you become a bhakta. It doesn't require that you have to pass M.A. examination to become a knowledge... Vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyam [Bg. 15.15]. If you simply understand Krsna, your all Vedic knowledge is perfect. Aradhito yadi haris tapasa tatah kim [Narada-pancaratra]. If you have understood Hari, Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, tapasa tatah kim, then where is the necessity of tapasya? You have achieved the result of tapasya.

Because to understand Krsna is not so easy.

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascid vetti mam tattvatah
 [Bg. 7.3]

To understand Krsna he requires great tapasya. There is no doubt about it. But if some way or other you have understood Krsna, then aradhito yadi haris tapasa tatah kim [Narada-pancaratra]. There is no more need of tapasya. Your ultimate goal of life is already achieved. And naradhito yadi haris tapasa tatah kim. And you have performed great austerities, penances, but you do not know what is Krsna -- then it is useless waste of time. Naradhito yadi haris tapasa tatah kim. What is the value of your tapasya? Real thing you do not understand. So aradhito yadi haris tapasa tatah kim, naradhito yadi haris tapasa tatah kim, antar bahir yadi haris tatah kim. If you have learned these four principles as instructed by Bhagavan, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru... [Bg. 18.65]. Very simple thing. Antar bahir, within and without, if you have learned to think of Krsna, antar bahir yadi haris tapasa, then where is the use of tapasya? It is already achieved. Because you are thinking always, externally and internally, Krsna. And naradhito yadi haris. Antar bahir yadi haris tapasa tatah kim. If you have not learned the art of thinking Krsna externally and internally, then what is the use of your so-called tapasya?

So this Krsna consciousness movement is very easy. If it cannot be introduced, I mean to say, in large scale, collectively, individually anyone can learn and take the Vedic wisdom. Anyone, even a child. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakta. And what is the result? The result is mam evaisyasi asamsayah [Bg. 18.65]. Anyone who is doing this, asamsaya, "Without any doubt, you are coming to Me." That is the aim of life, how to go back to hom, back to Godhead. Not to join here in the dog's race. That is not aim of life. It will not make me happy, anyone happy.

prakrteh kriyamanani
gunaih karmani sarvasah
ahankara-vimudhatma
kartaham iti manyate
 [Bg. 3.27]

The nature's law is working very stringently. You cannot avoid it.

daivi hy esa gunamayi
mama maya duratyaya
mam eva ye prapadyante
mayam etam taranti te
 [Bg. 7.14]

So these things are there. I can quote many verses like that. But Krsna consciousness is very easy, and everyone should become Krsna conscious. That is the aim of life. Na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah [SB 7.5.31]. We are trying to adjust things externally, but that will never be fulfilled. Durasaya. This is hope against hope. You cannot do anything independently because you are fully under the clutches of maya. Bhramayan sarva-bhutani yantrarudhani mayaya. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. Krsna says, "My dear Arjuna, Isvara, the Supreme Lord, is situated in the core of everyone's heart." He is not far away. And He is observing. In the Upanisads it is said that there are two birds on one tree. One is eating the fruit, and the other is witnessing. The witnessing bird is Krsna, and the eating bird is the jivatma.

So Krsna is so friendly that He always lives with us just to turn our face towards Krsna. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. What is His business? He is simply waiting for the time when we shall turn our face to Krsna. That is His business. But unfortunately, we do not want Krsna. We want something which is not Krsna. That is our disease. Still, Krsna is giving us facility. Bhramayan sarva-bhutani yantrarudhani mayaya [Bg. 18.61]. Krsna gives intelligence, mattah smrtir jnanam apohanam ca [Bg. 15.15], that "You are My part and parcel. Why you are struggling so hard in this material world? Come to Me. I will give you all protection." Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami [Bg. 18.66]. He is ready. But I'll not do. That's my obstinacy. At that time what Krsna will do? He is affectionate father. "All right, what do you want to do?" "I want to do like this." "All right." Bhramayan sarva-bhutani yantrarudhani mayaya [Bg. 18.61]. He immediately orders prakrti... Mayadhyaksena prakrteh suyate sa-caracaram [Bg. 9.10]. "This living entity wants a body like this. So give him a body like that." Yantra. That is called yantra. It is a machine. This body is the machine. And therefore we are changing, one body to another, yantrarudhani mayaya. This is our business.

So if I am now in a yantra, Mercedes car, and suppose next life I ride on another yantra which is four-legged dog, then what is the benefit of this kind of struggle for existence? But that is going on. Therefore Krsna warns, asraddhadhanah purusa dharmasyasya parantapa mam aprapya. "The aim of life was to achieve Me," Krsna says, "but the result is, because he does not hear what I say," mam aprapya nivartante, "again goes back," mrtyu-samsara-vartmani. This material world means to take birth and die. That is called mrtyu-samsara-vartmani. Now I am born as Indian or as brahmana or something like that. The next life, there is no guarantee. Krsna does not say that there is guarantee. Krsna says tatha dehantara-praptih. You have to change your body. Tatha dehantara-praptih dhiras tatra na muhyati [Bg. 2.13].

So our request is that such a great science of, for the human society, for understanding the problems of life, how to solve it, how to achieve the greatest success in life... We have got this in the Bhagavad-gita. Why should we neglect it? What is the reason? Other things may go on -- this political fight or some fight. Fighting. This is a world of fighting. Agamapayino 'nityah tams titiksasva bharata. Matra-sparsas tu kaunteya sitosna-sukha-duhkha-dah [Bg. 2.14]. This is world of sitosna-sukha-duhkha-dah. You cannot avoid it. So tams titiksasva bharata. Just try to tolerate. Caitanya Mahaprabhu also says the same thing:

trnad api sunicena
taror api suhisnuna
amanina manadena
kirtaniyah sada harih
 [Cc. Adi 17.31]

We have to become tolerant than the grass on the street and forbearing more than the trees. In this way we have to tolerate whatever is going on in this material world. Tolerate does not mean unnecessarily we shall suffer. As far as possible, let us struggle, but we should not forget our real business. That is human life. Real business is that I am part and parcel of God. Mamaivamso jiva-bhuta [Bg. 15.7]. Some way or other, I am fallen in this material condition. There is a Bengali poet, he has sung, anadi-karama-phale padi, bhavarnava-jale, tarivare na dheki upaya. "Somehow or other I am fallen in this material ocean and struggling for existence." Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore prayed... He does not pray for any material benefit. He is teaching us, na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagadisa kamaye: [Cc. Antya 20.29, Siksastaka 4] "My Lord, Jagadisa, I do not want any material happiness or wealth," na dhanam na janam, "or great followers," na sundarim kavitam, "or beautiful wife." These are the demands of the karmis: "I must have wealth, I must have position, I must have beautiful home, beautiful wife." But Caitanya Mahaprabhu denies. He says, na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagadisa kamaye. He does not want even mukti. Because He says next line that mama janmani janmanisvare bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi [Cc. Antya 20.29, Siksastaka 4]. "Life after life simply let Me remain Your devotee."

ayi nanda-tanuja patitam kinkaram
mam visame bhavambudhau
krpaya tava pada-pankaja-
sthita-dhuli-sadrsam vicintaya
 [Cc. Antya 20.32, Siksastaka 5]

So we have got such vast knowledge for achieving the goal of life. It is India. Why should we neglect? Why we should become so foolish that forget our real purpose of life and engage in will-o'-the-wisp struggle for existence, which will never be successful? Why this misconception of life? At least, there must be this institution of Krsna consciousness in India so that not only the Indians, but all outside India, they should come and learn what is Krsna consciousness. (applause) So it is already explained. We are trying to develop this institution in Bombay. Bombay is the best city in India, and people are also very advanced, enlightened. So let us combine together and develop this institution for the whole human society. That is our ambition. It is not for any sect or any creed or any particular class of men. Manusyanam sahasresu [Bg. 7.3]. It is for the human society, and we have got this opportunity of human body. A Bengali poet sings, hari hari biphale janama gonainu. Manusya-janama paiya, radha-krsna na bhajiya, janiya suniya visa khainu. "My Lord, I have wasted my this valuable life, human form of life, because I did not take to Krsna consciousness."

So if you do not take Krsna consciousness seriously in this human form of life, then you must know that you are drinking poison knowingly. Don't neglect it. Try to understand. It is based on science, philosophy, sastra, knowledge. It is not a blind faith. And we are prepared to answer you in any way. The method is very simple; even a child can take advantage of it. Not that we are manufacturing. It is sanctioned in the sastra. Kaler dosa-nidhe rajann asti hy eko mahan gunah. This is the statement by Sukadeva Gosvami to Maharaja Pariksit. He describes the faults of this Kali-yuga. It is just like the ocean. Kaler dosa-nidhe rajann hy asti eka mahan... But there is one very great advantage. He said What is that? Kirtanad eva krsnasya mukta-sangah param vrajet [SB 12.3.51]. If you chant Hare Krsna maha-mantra, then you become free from all contamination and go back to home, back to Godhead.

Thank you very much.

Tamala-krsna: Some people have questions. Do you want to answer them?

Prabhupada: Hm?

Tamala-krsna: No need? Kirtana?

Prabhupada: They do not know. Hare Krsna. Thank you very much. Jaya.

Giriraja: We're inviting all of you to remain for... [break] (end)

Science Of Supreme Pleasure

Caitanya Caritamrta Adi 1.5
Mayapur, March 29, 1975

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Nitai: "The loving affairs of Sri Radha and Krsna are transcendental manifestations of the Lord's internal pleasure-giving potency. Although Radha and Krsna are one in Their identity, They separated Themselves eternally. Now these two transcendental identities have again united in the form of Sri Krsna Caitanya. I bow down to Him, who has manifested Himself with the sentiment and complexion of Srimati Radharani although He is Krsna Himself."

Prabhupada:

radha-krsna-pranaya-vikrtir hladini saktir asmad
ekatmanav api bhuvi pura deha-bhedam gatau tau
caitanyakhyam prakatam adhuna tad-dvayam caikyam aptam
radha-bhava-dyuti-suvalitam naumi krsna-svarupam
 [Cc. Adi 1.5]

So another feature of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is described here by the author, Kaviraja Gosvami. In the beginning He has been described as the ultimate Absolute Truth, sad-aisvarya-purnah ya bhagavan. The Absolute Truth realized in three phases. The ultimate phase is Bhagavan. Sad-aisvarya-purnah. Bhagavan means full of six opulences. Not as nowadays there are so many Bhagavans, they have no aisvarya. But Bhagavan means sad-aisvarya-purnah, full opulences, six kinds of opulence. Then that Bhagavan, Supreme Personality of Godhead, has descended as incarnation, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, just to bestow the topmost understanding of loving affairs with Krsna. Samarpayitum unnata ujjvala-rasam sva-bhakti-sriyam.

In the bhakti platform there are different stages. Spiritually, there is no difference. One in dasya-rasa and one in madhurya-rasa, there is no difference. But a devotee likes to serve the Supreme Lord according to his inclination. Some wants to love Him in santa-rasa, some wants to love Him in dasya-rasa, someone in friendly, then paternal love, then conjugal love. So there is no difference between these different phases of loving affair, but great devotees and learned scholars, they have given their decision that the loving affairs of Krsna in the conjugal platform between husband and wife, or above that, between lover and beloved... That is very much prominent in the Western countries, friend, boyfriend, girlfriend. In the spiritual world that platform of remaining as friend without marriage, that is considered as the highest. And whatever we see here -- a perverted reflection of that loving affairs. Just like perverted reflection... It is described in the Bhagavad-gita, urdhva-mulam adho-sakha asvattham prahur avyayam. This material world has been described as having its root up, urdhva-mulam adho-sakha, and the branches down. We have several times explained this urdhva-mulam adho-sakha. In the material world this is a shadow. Unless it is shadow, how the mulam, or the root, can be upwards? We have got experience: a tree on the bank of a river. The tree is reflected adho-sakha, on the root upward, shadow. So this is shadow. Real thing is in the spiritual world. Therefore it is called adho-sakha. Sakha. In the spiritual world the topmost part is this conjugal love, and here, the same thing, when pervertedly reflected, it is the lowest abominable thing. We should know this, that in the spiritual world, to remain as girlfriend and boyfriend, that is the topmost pleasure, and in the material world, the same thing is the most abominable thing. Therefore it is adho-sakha. We cannot imitate the loving affairs of Krsna and Radharani unless we understand the real fact.

The real fact is described here, that radha-krsna-pranaya-vikrtir hladini saktih. Saktih means potency. So from Vedas we understand that the Lord, the Supreme Person, has got multi-energies.

parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate
svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca
na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate
na tat-samas abhyadhikas ca drsyate
 [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport]

So these energies... Krsna, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, has got multi-energies. When Arjuna requested Krsna, "Will You kindly explain some of the energies as You display?" so in the Bhagavad-gita there is a list of His different energies. And at last, it is concluded,

atha va bahunaitena
kim jnatena tavarjuna
vistabhya aham idam krtsnam
ekamsena sthito jagat
 [Bg. 10.42]

Idam krtsnam jagat: "All the material manifestation..." Material manifestation means these material universes. They are many. This universe, what we see, one only, the sky, the covering, but there are many millions of universes. Yasya prabha prabhavato jagad-anda-koti [Bs. 5.40]. Koti means millions. Jagad-anda. Jagad-anda means universes. So Krsna says that "All these universes in the material world is display of My one-fourth energy." Just imagine what is Krsna's energy. Ekamsena sthito jagat. And we are trying to imitate Krsna. So many rascals, they declare they are Bhagavan. They do not know what is Bhagavan. Bhagavan... These universes are coming, innumerable universes are coming, from the breathing of Maha-Visnu.

yasyaika-nisvasita-kalam athavalambya
jivanti loma-vilaja jagad-anda-nathah
visnur mahan sa iha yasya kala-viseso
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
 [Bs. 5.48]

They have no idea what is Bhagavan. This is one of the description of Maha-Visnu, that from His breathing, innumerable universes are coming out. When He is exhaling, the universes are coming out, and when He is inhaling, all, everything, is going within Him. This is Bhagavan. So anyway, this is partial exhibition of the energy of the Lord. And this is one-fourth energy. This material world is manifestation of His one-fourth energy. The three-fourth energies are in the spiritual world. So in that spiritual world Krsna exhibits His spiritual energy. That is only spiritual energy. This material world is made of material energy, and we are marginal energy.

So when Krsna wants to enjoy -- the enjoy means these loving affairs between man and woman -- that is a fact. That is not an artificial thing. Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has explained Vedanta-sutra, janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. He has said, adi rasasya janma yatra. Adi-rasa. There are twelve kinds of rasas, mellow. Of all of them, the adi-rasa... Adi-rasa means the loving affair between man and woman. This is called adi-rasa. So, Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura explains, janmady asya means the adi-rasa, loving affairs between man and woman, that is from the Supreme Person. That's a fact. Unless the loving propensity is there in the Supreme, how it can be reflected? Because this is perverted reflection only, so there must be the origin. So the Mayavadi philosophers, they cannot understand this. Because they have got bitter experience of this material world, they try to make zero or without any varieties the ultimate goal. Sunyavadi. Nirvisesa-sunyavadi. The nirvisesavada, impersonalism and voidism, they are of the same nature. The Buddhist philosopher, they say, "Ultimately, everything is zero." And the Mayavadi philosopher says not zero, but impersonal. But actually that is not fact. There is everything, variety and personal. But because the philosophers with poor fund of knowledge, they cannot understand, they make it zero or varietyless, nirvisesavada. That, to clean, that to clear the idea, our Kaviraja Gosvami says that this Radha-Krsna prema, loving affairs between Radha Krsna, it is a fact. It is not imagination. It is a fact. But this fact is different from the fact we have got experience in this world. That is to be understood. Don't take... Just like sahajiyas. They take the Radha-Krsna prema just like ordinary lusty affairs in this material world. But that is not the fact. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam there is a verse that the loving affairs of gopis and Krsna, Visnu, it is not ordinary thing. If one can hear from the proper source, and if he understands the real fact of rasa-lila, then the result will be that his heart, which is full with lusty desire, that will vanish. There will be no more lusty desires. Pranaya-vikrtih, this pranaya-vikrtih hladini. So if anyone understands this pranaya-vikrtih, the loving affairs, transformation of different feelings, if one can understand, then his material lusty desires will vanish. This is the result. Hrd-roga-kaman apasya apahinoti dhirah. He becomes dhira.

Here in this material world everyone is adhira, agitated, agitated by lusty desires. But in the spiritual world they are dhira. They are not agitated by lusty desires. This is spiritual world. So long we are agitated by the lusty desires, we must know that we are in the material world. That is the test. Just like Yamunacarya says,

yad-avadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravindayor
nava-nava-(rasa)-dhamany (udyatam) rantum asit
tad-avadhi bata nari-sangame smaryamane
bhavati mukha-vikarah susthu nisthivanam ca

"So long I have been engaged in the service of Krsna and I am rendering more and more service and getting spiritual pleasure, since then, as soon as I think of sex life, I immediately spite upon it and I hate to think of it." This is the result. So people should know what is Radha-Krsna pra... If one becomes attached to radha-krsna-pranaya-vikrtih, then the test is that his lusty desires will vanish. This is the test. Therefore Kaviraja Gosvami explains that "This is not ordinary thing. This is the transformation of the ahladini sakti." Samvit, sandhini, ahladini. The Supreme Lord has got three potencies, or energies, primarily. So this radha-krsna-pranaya-vikrtih is transformation of the pleasure potency. Krsna is described in the Bhagavad-gita, param brahma. Param brahma. Param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan [Bg. 10.12]. That is the explanation given by Arjuna. This is called parampara system. If we follow Arjuna, Arjuna's decision should be taken. Arjuna decision is: "Krsna is param brahma." So the Mayavadi philosophers, they are after brahma-sukha. Brahma-sukhanubhutya. Brahma-sukhanubhutya. The source of brahma-sukha is Krsna, but they cannot reach up to that point.

ittham (satam) brahma-sukhanubhutya
dasyam gatanam para-daivatena
mayasritanam nara-darakena
sakam vijahruh krta-punya-punjah
 [SB 10.12.11]

Sri Sukadeva Gosvami says, "Here is the Param Brahman." When he is describing Krsna's pastimes with the cowherd boys, so Sukadeva Gosvami says, "These cowherd boys are playing with the Supreme Person who is the source of brahma-sukha." Ittham brahma-sukhanubhutya. And for the devotees... There are two kinds of transcendentalist: one Brahmavadi and other, Vaisnava. A Vaisnava takes this philosophy, that we are servant. Jivera svarupa haya nitya krsna dasa [Cc. Madhya 20.108-109]. And the Mayavadi philosophers, they imperfectly think that they have become one with the Supreme, they have become Narayana. That is a misleading philosophy. We should not accept that.

So this Krsna, being Param Brahman, so what will be the platform of His loving affairs? This is to be considered. For brahma-sukha, we are... In this material world we see many saintly persons. They give up everything, sannyasa. Sannyasa means giving up everything for the Supreme. So for simply to relish a little bit of brahma-sukha, these saintly persons, great, great saintly persons, they are giving up everything. Tyaktva sva-dharmam. Sva-dharma means the regulated division of the society: brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra. So they give up everything, brahma-sukhanubhutya, to understand... Tapo divyam putraka yena suddhyed sattva [SB 5.5.1]. For purifying the existence. Because we are after happiness, every one of us. But we are seeking happiness in the perverted reflection. That is not possible. Therefore one has to give up this perverted happiness and come to the real fact. So our point is that "Because Krsna is Param Brahman, so how He can take pleasure in this material world?" This is the argument. So those who are wrongly thinking, foolishly thinking, that "Krsna enjoyed with the gopis like we enjoy in the company of many girls," they are great fools. They have no knowledge. They are misled because it appears, perverted reflection, it appears like that. But the reflection is different from the reality. So we should not take in that way. We should follow the footsteps of Caitanya-caritamrta kar, that we should understand that this pranaya-vikrtih, this transformation of loving affairs between Radha and Krsna, this is not like this, the ordinary boy and girl. It is ahladini sakti. If we take that, then we are misled. How He can take? Because for understand brahma-sukha we are giving up everything -- I mean from the Mayavadi point of view -- and again, Krsna being Param Brahman, how He can indulge in material happiness? This is the argument. Brahma-sukha, to understand brahma-sukha, to release brahma-sukha, if one is giving up everything material... There are three kinds of sukha: material sukha, brahma-sukha, and spiritual sukha. Brahma-sukha is on the margin. Sukha means happiness. Therefore, from logical point of view, we should conclude it that "Krsna, being Parabrahman, how He can indulge in material happiness?" This is very important point. If for understanding little bit of brahma-sukha we are giving up all material enjoyment, how Krsna can enjoy materially? He is Param Brahman. Therefore those sahajiyas, those who are taking that Krsna is enjoying with ordinary girls, they are very, very, much misled. That is not the fact. Therefore it is said, hladini sakti. This is different. This is in the spiritual world the topmost mellow, hladini sakti.

So eko brahma dvitiya nasti: "Brahman, Parabrahman, is one." Krsna is one. There is no competition with Krsna. Na tasya samah adhikas ca drsyate: "Nobody can be equal with Him; nobody can be greater than Him." Na tasya samah. Samah means equal, and adhikah means greater. That is Parabrahman. That is Krsna. So Krsna says also, mattah parataram nanyat: [Bg. 7.7] "There is no more superior entity than Me." So we have to very carefully study Krsna. The Krsna consciousness movement means to understand Krsna very scientifically. It is not sentiment. One must be very philosophically advanced with scientific knowledge. Jnanam vijnanam. This is vijnana. It is not sentiment. Jnanam vijnana-sahitam. Jnanam me paramam guhyam yad vijnana-samanvitam. Without vijnana, science, without philosophy to understand Krsna, is not possible. You can say that "Do you think that all the devotees, they are all scientist and philosopher?" Yes. The answer is yes. "No, they have no degree of science or philosophy." And still... Because if you learn science and philosophy, you will have to approach some person who knows the science, knows the philosophy. But the greatest scientist, the greatest philosopher, is Krsna. He is within your heart. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. And He says, tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam, buddhi-yogam dadamy aham [Bg. 10.10]. Anyone who is sincere devotee and always engaged in Krsna's service, Krsna says, "I give him education, intelligence. I make him scientist, philosopher." That is the way. Buddhi-yogam dadami. What kind of science? What kind of philosophy? Yena mam upayanti te. "That science, that spiritual science, that spiritual philosophy, I teach him personally." Why this is so not to all? You may say that if Isvara, the Supreme Lord, is sitting in everyone's heart, why He is especially inclined, tesam satata-yuktanam [Bg. 10.10], one who is engaged twenty-fours hours in His service? Why not others? So that is special mercy for the devotee, special mercy. Tesam evanukampartham aham ajnana-jam tamah, nasayamy atma-bhava-sthah [Bg. 10.11]. This is the process. You cannot understand God, or Krsna, without being a faithful servant. This is the secret. And if we become faithful servant under the guidance of proper spiritual master, then we can understand what is Krsna, what is Parabrahman, and what is loving affairs with Radharani, what is Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. These things are revealed. It is not acquired by so-called mundane knowledge. That is not possible. Svayam eva sphuraty adhah. Just like in the darkness, if you want the sunshine, it is not possible. But in the morning the sun comes out automatically and the darkness is dissipated. Svayam eva. So we should always remain faithful servant of Krsna. And Krsna is within everyone's heart, and He will be pleased by your service, and then He will reveal Himself, what He is. Otherwise it is not possible.

Thank you very much. (end)

"Cheater Leaders"

74/03/29 Bombay, Bhagavad-gita 4.9

Pradyumna: (leads text chanting) Translation: "One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities, does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna."

Prabhupada:

janma karma ca me divyam
evam yo vetti tattvatah
tyaktva deham punar janma
naiti mam eti so'rjuna
[Bg. 4.9]

This is very important verse. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti. Our problem is this transmigration of the soul, one body to another. This is going on. Because you do not know how to get out of it, modern education they do not know even what is soul, what is this body, how the transmigration of the soul taking place. All blunt. There is no educational institution all over the world to understand this science. Although it is the most important science for the human being. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti [Bg. 4.9]. No more transmigration of the soul.

The soul, in its original spiritual body, can be transferred from this material world to the spiritual world. And there is the spiritual world as I've already explained, that is three times creation of the Lord. This is only one-fourth, this material world. So our problem of human life is to get out of these material clutches and transfer ourselves to the spiritual world. That is real problem. Not this food problem, that problem. This will go on. So long you are in the material world, such problems will come and go. They're not permanent. That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita. Agamapayinah anityah tams titiksasva bharata. These problems, they'll come and they'll go. Just like seasonal changes.

matra-sparsas tu kaunteya
sitosna-sukha-duhkha-dah
agamapayino 'nityas
tams titiksasva bharata
[Bg. 2.14]

That is real knowledge. We should not be disturbed by the material problems. You cannot avoid them. So long... Just like if you are in the winter season, how you can avoid cold, infection by cold, or affection by cold? You cannot avoid. That does not mean, because it is the season is very cool and you cannot take bath. No. You must take bath. That is Aryan civilization. Still in India we'll find in the villages severe cold. Still the people are taking bath early in the morning. They are accustomed. But now we are giving up. Now we are rising at seven o'clock because we are advanced in education. And if there is mangala-aratrika, it is nuisance. This is our advancement of civilization at the present moment. But if you go in the villages, you'll find that the villagers rising early in the morning, they're taking bath, changing cloth, and chanting Hare Krsna as far as possible. Still in the mass of people of India, the Krsna consciousness is still existing, it is not yet lost.

And they believe in the next birth, next life, past life, they believe in God, in Krsna. They're satisfied with that position, but the modern leaders they do not like it. They want to make them intoxicated so that they can work like an ass for the morsel of food. But this is not the problem. The real problem is here, stated, that you should stop the disease of birth and death. That is real problem. Tyaktva deham punar janma [Bg. 4.9]. The human life is meant for making a solution of the repetition of birth and death. That is real problem. Janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi-duhkha-dosanudarsanam [Bg. 13.9]. We are finding fault with so many things. But really we should find fault with this process of repetition of birth and death. People are now being educated in this way that there is no more life. You have got this life and you enjoy the senses as far as possible.

That is nastik theory. This nastik or atheism... There were many saints in India also. One of them is Carvaka. He's very famous atheist. His philosophy is hedonism. Rnam krtva ghrtam pibet yavaj jivet sukham jivet. His theory is, because in India the luxury is to eat something which is cooked in ghee: luci, puri, halava. So Carvaka Muni says that you take loan from your friends if you have no money and eat as much as possible ghee. Rnam krtva ghrtam pibet yavaj jivet sukham jivet. And so long you live, you live by gratifying your senses. Here sukham means sense gratification.

But according to Vedic civilization, sukham atyantikam yat tad atindriyam grahyam. What is the actual happiness? That is beyond your senses. Not sense gratification. But because we are materially absorbed, we think indriyani parany ahur [Bg. 3.42]. Indriya. the senses, always all. To satisfy the senses that is sukh. That is happiness. And those who are a little disgusted with sense gratification, indriyani parany ahur indriyebhyah param manah [Bg. 3.42]. They are mental speculators. They write poetries and utopian theories, "This philosophy, that philosophy." In this way they satisfy the mind. But that is also not happiness. Mental happiness. Mano-rathena asato dhavato bahih. If you become satisfied by mental happiness, then you'll have to come down again. Asato. Asato ma sad-gamah. Real life is: "Don't stay in this temporary world but go to the real world, paras tasmat tu bhavo 'nyo 'vyakto 'vyaktat sanatanah [Bg. 8.20]. You'll find all these things in Bhagavad-gita. So either on the bodily plane or on the mental plane you cannot be happy. That is not possible. But if you want to be happy then you have to come to the spiritual platform and engage in spiritual activities, sukham atyantikam yat tad atindriyam grahyam. Atindriya means above the material platform of sensual and mental activities.

So spiritual activities means devotional service. Spiritual activities mean devotional service, activities in relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Bhakti-yoga. Bhakti-yoga means, as I have repeatedly explained, that you have to forget your identification with the matter, sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. You have to forget your body as American, Indian, brahmana, ksatriya, sudra, Hindu, Muslim. That you have to forget. Aham brahmasmi, "I am spirit soul." That is real identification. And when the spirit soul is active, sometimes the Mayavadi philosophers, they think, "Now I've realized that I am not this body, I am not matter, I am spirit soul, so now I have become Narayana. I have become the Supreme." But no, that is also mistake. When you realize that "Supreme is the Supreme Brahman, Parabrahman, I am part and parcel of the Supreme, I am also Brahman, but I am not the Supreme Brahman, therefore my business is to serve Parabrahman." That is real spiritual life. That is the beginning of spiritual life.

brahma-bhutah prasannatma
na socati na kanksati
samah sarvesu bhutesu
mad-bhaktim labhate param
[Bg. 18.54]

Para bhakti. Para-bhakti, that is real spiritual life. Para apara, apara bhakti means on the material platform. Generally, the Deity worship. This is the beginning, but as you go on worshiping the Deity you realize your spiritual identity. Then you do not see the Deity as made of stone or wood. You see directly the Supreme Personality of Godhead and you can talk, you can receive an inspiration. This is the beginning.

arcayam eva haraye
pujam yah sraddhayehate
na tad-bhaktesu canyesu
sa bhaktah prakrtah smrtah

We should learn how to do good to the people in general. They have forgotten their relationship with God. You should be sympathetic for them. That they're suffering on account of their forgetfulness of God, let us do some service to them. (indistinct) Awaken them. Awaken their Krsna consciousness. That is Krsna consciousness movement. It is the best welfare activities to the human society. Because he has got, he has forgotten Krsna, he's suffering and if you awaken his Krsna consciousness then he will be happy.

Just like a rich man's son. He has forgotten that his father is very rich, or his father has left immense property. But forgetting his real position, he's loitering in the street, hungry. You can call him, "All right, you take some food." That is not real benefit, that is temporary. But if you awaken his real consciousness, that he is the son of a very rich man, his father has got immense property, "Why don't you go back to your father and be happy?" That is Krsna consciousness movement. That is stated here. Janma karma ca me divyam yo vetti tattvatah [Bg. 4.9]. One has to understand Krsna, tattvatah, in truth. Not superficially. What is Krsna? Krsna is the supreme leader. Nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). supreme leader, perfect leader, without any mistake, without any illusion, without any cheating, and without any imperfection of the senses. We have to take direction from such a leader, then our life will be successful. And because we are taking direction from imperfect leaders, cheater leaders, therefore we are meeting with so many problems.

Krsna says that yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata. Tadatmanam srjamy aham [Bg. 4.7]. That I have already explained, what is that glanih? The glanih is when we forget Krsna. Then our activities become polluted. Just like a servant. If he forgets that there is master, then he becomes polluted. He steals, he mismanages things, things become very disordered. But if he has got the sense that "I have got my master, everything belongs to my master," and if he acts accordingly, that is very nice.
So we do not know what is the constitutional position of Krsna and what is my constitutional position. That is called sambandha-jna. My relationship with Krsna. Everyone of us has got a relationship. Krsna says in the Fifteenth Chapter, mamaivamso jiva-bhutah [Bg. 15.7]. Just like sons are part and parcel of the father. Father's body extends as son and daughter. Similarly we are also expansion of Krsna's body. We are vibhinnamsa. Krsna expands in two ways, svamsa and vibhinnamsa. The vibhinnamsa expansion we are, we living entities. But because we have forgotten Krsna, we have come to enjoy this material world, we are becoming infected with the modes of material nature, and accepting different types of body, 8,400,000 species of life. But somehow or other if we come in contact with Krsna, by the mercy of Krsna's confidential devotees, then our life becomes success. That is described here. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti [Bg. 4.9]. Then this transmigration of the soul stops. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti.

Punar janma naiti, does not mean that soul is finished. No. This body, material body, na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. This material body, when it is dissolved, pancatvam prapta, mixes with these five elements, earth, water, fire, air, it does not mean that the soul is finished. The soul is there. The soul is transmigrating to another body. Karmana daiva-netrena [SB 3.31.1]. By the supervision of the external energy, and superior superintendent, we are transferred to a different body by the subtle body, mana, buddhi, ahankara. But these foolish people, they do not know how the soul is... They do not know what is soul and how the soul is being transferred. But these things are all explained in the Bhagavad-gita. Just like we cannot see the flavor, but when the flavor passes through carried by the air, we can smell. Similarly, we can smell how the soul is being transferred. These processes are explained in the Bhagavad-gita.

Therefore our duty is to know Krsna. Janma karma. Krsna comes, Krsna appears, Krsna disappears. Why Krsna comes? Why Krsna is not seen? Janma karma. Why He acts? Why He takes birth in the battlefield of Kuruksetra? Why He teaches Arjuna? Why He dances with the gopis? So many things Krsna's life. We have read Krsna book. There are so many activities. They're all transcendental, although they're written just like ordinary story activities of a person. But they are not ordinary things. If you simply read Krsna book, although it looks like story, then you become delivered from these clutches of repetition of birth and death.

It is so nice. Because you will understand Krsna, what is Krsna, and here it is said, janma karma ca me divyam ye janati tattvatah [Bg. 4.9]. It is explained. The people who are reading Krsna book very seriously, and tries to understand Krsna, he will understand. Krsna is very kind. As soon as he begins reading Krsna book with a little faith and adherence, Krsna will be very much pleased. Srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah [SB 1.2.17]. As soon as Krsna is within your heart so when you read Bhagavad-gita or Krsna book with little seriousness, then Krsna understands, "Now he is serious to understand me." He's with the.... You haven't got to search out Krsna, He's already within you. Simply you have to become little serious. "Krsna, kindly give me knowledge so that I can understand." Buddhi-yogam dadami tam. If you are serious devotee, if you are in love with Krsna, tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam [Bg. 10.10]. If you are engaged in His worshiping, in chanting, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. If you simply follow these four principles, simply thinking of Krsna, simply, always, sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayoh [SB 9.4.18]. Simply meditate. This is meditation.

Meditation means as you see the form of Krsna, and whenever you go, the impression of the form will be within your eyes, and if you think of Krsna, your life is succesful. Therefore the Deity of Krsna should be seen. That is the benefit of the eyes. The ears should be engaged hearing about Krsna. The tongue should be engaged for eating Krsna's remnants of foddstuff, prasadam. The nose should be engaged for smelling the flower which is offered to Krsna, or the tulasi. In this way, when you engage all your senses, the legs should be utilized for coming to this temple to see Krsna. Not to going to the cinema rascal. Then your life will be successful. You'll understand Krsna. Krsna is very kind. He says tesam satata-yuktanam [Bg. 10.10], if you engage all your senses for understanding Krsna with devotion and faith, priti-purvakam, with love, the love is the basic principle of understanding Krsna.

But you will develop your love. The love means, just like it is said, dadati pratigrhnati. You are coming into the temple if you give something, patram puspam phalam toyam. Little things. "Krsna, I have brought You. I could not bring any very costly thing, but I've collected these patram puspam phalam toyam. Krsna is pleased, tad aham asnami. Krsna says

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami...
[Bg. 9.26]

Because he has brought it, Krsna is not beggar. Krsna can create millions of fruits and flowers. He's atmarama, He's fully satisfied in Himself. He's so opulent. But He wants that you should also love Krsna and give Him something. That He wants. Therefore He comes, paritranaya sadhunam [Bg. 4.8]. Therefore He comes.

He's not poor. Krsna is all opulent. Laksmi-sahasra-sata-sambhrama-sevyamanam [Bs. 5.29]. He's always being worshiped by many hundreds and thousands of goddesses of fortune. Here we worship Goddess Laksmi, goddess of fortune, "Mother, give me some money." And that also does not stay. Laksmi's another name is cancala, sometimes she favors and goes away. But Krsna is so opulent that millions of godesses of fortune are engaged in His service. So why He's asking you, patram puspam phalam toyam [Bg. 9.26]? He's asking out of love. That, "You try to love Me. If You are so poor you cannot give Me anything, alright, give me little flower, little fruit. I will be satisfied." Krsna is so kind.

And still you are not taking the opportunity of understanding Krsna. Just see how much unfortunate we are. As you serve Krsna, you understand Krsna. You cannot understand Krsna otherwise, unless you render service. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva sphuraty adah. Atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih [Brs. 1.2.234]. If you simply exact your senses, your nice brain, "Krsna is like this, Krsna is like that," but if you are not a devotee, Krsna will not reveal Himself. Naham prakasah sarvasya yoga-maya-samavrtah [Bg. 7.25]. The rascal's mental speculation will not help him to understand Krsna, what He is. That is not possible. His all activities are divyam, transcendental. We cannot understand with our material blunt senses. That is not possible. Therefore, the sastra says, atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih [Brs. 1.2.234]. These blunt senses, you cannot understand Krsna. Or Krsna means His name, His form, His quality, His activities, His pastimes, so many things. Janma karma.
So how Krsna will be understood then? Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau. If you engage your tongue in His service, then that is the recommendation of Vedic literature. That, first of all, you have to engage your tongue. Krsna's service begins from the tongue, because tongue has got two functions, namely to vibrate to speak something, and to taste something. So you engage. You simply engage your tongue for chanting and glorifying Krsna, and eat prasadam, then the two tongue's business will be finished. Sevonmukhe. You eat Krsna's prasadam.

krsna baro doyamoy, koribare jihwa jay,
sva prasad-anna dilo bhai
sei prasadanno pao, radha-krsna-guna gao

Bhaktivinoda Thakura has taught that our tongue is very fastidious, wants to eat this thing, that thing, this thing, that thing. Even after... We have seen. He has eaten sumptuously at home but as soon as he comes out, "Let us go to the restaurant, let us have a cup of tea, a little this or that." The tongue is always dictating. "You eat this, you eat that, you eat that, you like that." That is going on. So if you want to control your tongue, then give him Krsna prasadam. That "I'll not accept anything which is not offered to Krsna." Then your tongue becomes controlled. And if you can control your tongue, your other senses will be automatically controlled. And yogic perfection means controlling the senses. Yoga indriya-samyamah. So a devotee of Krsna is the first-class yogi. That is accepted by Krsna.

yoginam api sarvesam
mad-gatenantar-atmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah
[Bg. 6.47]

So this Krsna consciousness movement means to train people to become the topmost yogi. Topmost yogi. Because they have controlled their senses. No meat eating, no intoxication, not even smoking or drinking tea. This is yoga (indistinct). Not that simply by pressing nose one becomes yogi. Practical life. After performing yoga, "Oh, my tongue is now dry, give me one bidi. (indistinct) one bidi." That is not yoga practice, smoking ganja, bidi, intoxication, tea, and he has become a yogi. These are useless, all bogus. Yoga means he has controlled his senses. Yoga indriya-samyamah. The yoga practice means controlling the senses and engaging the mind on the lotus feet of Krsna. That is yoga system.

yam brahma varunendra-rudra-marutah stunvanti divyaih stavair
vedaih sanga-pada-kramopanisadair gayanti yam sama-gah
dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa pasyanti yam yogino...

Dhyanavasthita, meditation, always seeing the lotus feet of Krsna. Nowadays they have manufactured some meditation, something light, this, that, all nonsense. Dhyanavasthita-manasa, mind being absorbed. Sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayor. That is real yoga system. Meditation. Now it is the age of meditation. Meditation is not meant for this age. Meditation is meant for the satya-yuga. What is that verse? Krte yad dhyayato visnum. Krte, krte means satya-yuga. People were very restrained, all paramahamsas. In those days it was possible to meditate. At the present moment our mind is so disturbed, we are disturbed in so many ways. Meditation is not possible in this age. Maybe there may be one or two persons who can meditate. The real meditation means to think of Krsna. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. That is real meditation. So in this way, if we engage our life, that means bhakti-yoga, then Krsna reveals, atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih [Brs. 1.2.234]. If you simply speculate, tax your senses to understand Krsna by so-called scholarship, that will not help you. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau. You engage your tongue in the service of the Lord, then He'll reveal.

It is a revelation. It is not speculation. The speculators cannot understand what is Krsna, that is not possible. Those who are actually devotees, tesam satata-yuktanam [Bg. 10.10]. Twenty-four hours engaged in the service of the Lord.

sravanam kirtanam visnoh
smaranam pada-sevanam
arcanam vandanam dasyam...
[SB 7.5.23]

Out of these nine methods, all the nine, or eight, seven, six, even one. If you engage yourself. Just like Maharaja Pariksit, he engaged himself simply for hearing. He become perfect. Simply by hearing Bhagavata from Sukadeva Gosvami. And Sukadeva Gosvami also became perfect, simply by reciting Srimad-Bhagavatam. Sri visnoh smarane, sravane pariksid abhavad vaiyasakih kirtane. This is also kirtana. Abhavad vaiyasakih kirtane. Prahladah smarane. Prahlada Maharaja, he was put into so many difficulties by his father. He could not resist, he was a poor child, five years. And the rascal father was teasing him in so many ways. So what could he do? He was simply thinking of Krsna, "What can I do?" There are so many processes. If you take one of the processes your life will be successful. Simply by thinking of Krsna.

Janma karma me divyam, yo janati tattvatah. Who can know? Yo janati tattvatah, to whom Krsna reveals, he can know. He can know what is Krsna, and as soon as you have done this business you have understood Krsna, then tyaktva deham punar janma naiti [Bg. 4.9]. No more birth in this material world. To take birth in this material... Because you have got this body, therefore you have to suffer threefold miseries. We foolishly... You are trying to make adjustments to become happy here. It is not possible, because this place is recommended by Krsna: duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15], it is a place of miseries. How you can become happy here? This is illusion. You can never be happy in this material world, but you are trying to become happy in so many politician, social workers, this and that, simply wasting their time. They cannot be. You have to accept the leadership of Krsna. Then you will be happy. If you accept the leadership of rascals, fools, you cannot be happy. Demons. They'll put you into difficulties.

Now, just this evening, one gentleman was speaking about Ahmedabad, that the students have burned so many buses, they're now uncontrollable. So this is going on all over the world. People are frustrated, because on account of these rascal leaders. They are taking the position of leadership, but they're all rascals and fools, they cannot lead. If you want to be happy, take actual leadership of Krsna, then you'll be happy. Thank you very much. (end)

"We Have To Tolerate"

"We Have To Tolerate"

29 Mar 77 , Bombay
