Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: So we have discussed the different names of Manu, the father of man. In different millenniums there are different Manus, and the present Manu is Vaivasvata Manu. Out of the fourteen Manus, now it is, the eighth Manu is going on at the present moment. That means this is about one o'clock in the day of Brahma, just past noon. It is going to be afternoon. And during Brahma's sleeping time all these planets will be, I mean to say, not annihilated, but inundated, you see, devastation with water. So after the finishing of these fourteen Manus here will be evening, night, and there will be devastation, and half of this universe, up to the sun planet, or above that, everything will be covered with water. Instead of air, there will be water. Then again there will be again... This is kanda-pralaya. And maha-pralaya means, when Brahma dies, then everything is finished.

So these fourteen Manus we have mentioned yesterday. Now yugavatara. Yugavatara means just like there are four yugas: Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali. The ages of each yuga we have mentioned already. Now in the Satya-yuga, when the yugavatara comes, He is white. He is Hayagriva in the Satya-yuga, as white as our Hayagriva brahmacari. Yes. He is white. And rakta. Sukla-rakta-krsna-pita-krame cari varna. In the Satya-yuga when the incarnation of yugavatara comes, His complexion is white. And in the next yuga, Treta-yuga, the complexion is red. And the next yuga, Dvapara-yuga, the complexion is black, Krsna. And the next, Kali-yuga, the complexion is yellow. Lord Caitanya is yellow.

krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam
sangopangastra-parsadam
yajnaih sankirtana-prayair
yajanti hi su-medhasah
 [SB 11.5.32]

In this age, Kali-yuga, this is the yugavatara, Lord Caitanya. And His description is mentioned in Srimad-Bhagavatam. Five thousand years before, it was mentioned that krsna-varnam. Krsna-varnam means that He is in the category of Krsna. Svayam-krsna. You can take the meaning of krsna-varnam like this. Varna means a caste or classification. So He is in the classification of the Supreme Lord, Krsna. Or if you don't take that meaning, then krsna-varnam means He is always chanting "Krsna." Krsnam varnayati. Varnayati means chanting. So krsna-varnam, always engaged in Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. So this is the first feature. The symptoms of the yugavatara of this age is given like this, krsna-varnam. Either you can say that He is varnayati... Varnayati means describing only Krsna. Lord Caitanya preached... His preaching mission was aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa-tanaya, Krsna. Krsna is the only worshipable object. And He was always chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. This is the first symptom of Lord Caitanya.

Krsna-varnam tvisa akrsnam. By complexion He is akrsna. Akrsna means not krsna, not black. Not black, you may take, if not black, then it may, as there are four colors, so He may be white, He may be red, He may be yellow. Now, out of these three colors, in the Satya-yuga white is already done. And in the Treta-yuga red is already appeared. Then the balance is pita. Krsna is also done. Then the pita, the yellow. So therefore His color is very golden colored, yellow. Lord Caitanya's complexion not exactly white like you, but He was golden color, golden with yellowish tint, a very nice complexion, Lord Caitanya's. He is... Therefore His name is Gauranga. Gauranga means white complexion. Another name is Gaurasundara, "very beautiful." So krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam [SB 11.5.32]. Tvisa, tvisa means by complexion akrsna, not krsna. Although He is Krsna, His complexion is not krsna. Then next? Krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam. He is always accompanied by His associates. You will see in the picture. There is Nityananda Prabhu, there is Advaita Prabhu, there is Srivasa, and always He was... From the beginning, when He was a child... Not child. When He was a boy, He started the sankirtana movement. You see the picture: He is surrounded. And throughout whole, so long He lived, He was present on this world, that was... He was surrounded by this Hare Krsna party. Sangopangastra-parsadam. This is the yugavatara of this age.

Now, kalau, kalau, "in this age," especially meant. Now, how to worship Him? Does He require any grandeur, any throne or any decoration? No. Nothing. Anywhere and everywhere you can worship Him. How? Sankirtanaih, this chanting. Keep the picture of Lord Caitanya with His associates, this, as picture we are painting, we have got, and any part of the world, you sit down and go on chanting, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama... So no expense, no nothing. This is the recommendation for this age. Therefore this picture and this sound vibration should be preached all over the world. And rest assured there will be peace and prosperity. This should be the mission of this society, Krsna consciousness. This is Lord Caitanya's mission. He ordered,

bharata-bhumite manusya-janma haila yara
janma sarthaka kari' kara para-upakara
 [Cc. Adi 9.41]

Para-upakara means "do good to others." "You are born in Bharatavarsa. You are not meant for exploiting others. You are meant for doing good to others." That is His mission. Para-upakara. Para-upakara means "Do good to others." It is specially mentioned, bharata-bhumite manusya-janma haila yara. Bharata-bhumite, in this land of Bharatavarsa, one who has taken his birth as a human being... Human being. "I am not talking," Lord Caitanya said, "I am not talking of others, less than human being. Anyone who has taken his birth as human being..." Janma sarthaka kari. Janma sarthaka. How? How to make your life perfect? Now, just you become Krsna conscious.

So He advised every Indian that this is the mission of Indian mission. Because in this age all over the world there will be hopelessness, now this mission should be started from India. That was His prediction. This mission should be started, and the Indians should take responsibility for starting this mission all over the world. And they will be happy. There will be too much unhappiness in this age, and by spreading this mission there will be happiness. That is His prediction. So it is not a manufactured thing. We are just following the footprints of Lord Caitanya. So let us follow it nicely. There will be peace and prosperity all over the world. Yes.

So in the Srimad-Bhagavatam there is quotation when Krsna was born. It is the system of Vedic system. There are ten kinds of samskaras, reformation. And how much careful this Vedic civilization is, that a child will be born and he is taken care of since the day of the, I mean to say, joining, conjugation of the father and mother. Garbhadhana-samskara. How much they were expecting that a good son will come, and he will be so good that the society will be happy, the country will be happy, the world will be happy. Never they prescribed unwanted children like cats and dogs. No. So therefore there was garbhadhana-samskara. Before the father and mother conjugate there is ceremony, garbhadhana, for the higher caste. The higher caste were made not artificially. They had to follow nine great principles, then they are higher caste, not by rubber stamp, just like Gandhi wanted to do, taking the banghis, the sweepers, and rubber-stamping "harijana." No. This is a process. Everyone is open to become a harijana, but not by rubber stamp but by training. That training is required. People are avoiding the training and simply speculating in the mind, foolishness. How the world can improve? There must be training. Without training, simply by mental speculation, one can make any... Manasa mathuram gacchasi. Oh, you have to work. If you want to go California, you have to go there. Simply I am thinking, "I am going to California, California," will that...? No.

So similarly, actually if you want peace, then you have to work. The process is there. The process open for everyone, but you have to take it. Otherwise it is not possible. Therefore Lord Caitanya says, manusya-janma sarthaka kari: "You first of all make yourself perfect; then preach." Don't become yourself nonsense, and you become a preacher. No. Apani acari prabhu jivera siksaya. Preacher must be in his life perfect. Then he can become a preacher. If I smoke, how can I say that "You do not smoke"? Then how... Modern days is, "What I do, that you may not do. What I say, you do." Why shall I follow you? You are not doing? So Lord Caitanya therefore says, janma-sarthaka kari.

So when Krsna was born... Of course, He is pure. He is God. But the social and the scriptural rules and regulations were followed. So when a child is born the astrologer is called. Still that system is followed. But due to this Kali-yuga the astrologer has also become a false, and this has become a formality. Somebody is following; somebody is not following. So as soon as a child is born... You will find Maharaja Pariksit, as soon as he was born, his grandfather, Maharaja Yudhisthira, called for astrologer. This is called jata-karma. Just after the child is born, this astrologer will come and he will see the moment, the astronomical situation, and make a horoscope, and then immediately his future activities and everything will be clearly made, that "This child is born at such and such moment. He will be like this and this." And that will be... You will be surprised... Not surprised. This is calculation. In my horoscope it is written there, "At the age of seventy years he will go across the sea." It is written there. Yes. And there are so many things still. So this astrologer was so accurate. I have got that horoscope. Not here. If some day I shall, then will show. It is clearly written there that "This time he will go across the sea." Just see. The circumstances became so that I have come. So astrology is so nice.

So when Krsna was born the same principle was followed. Astrologer was called for, and there were good astrologers. And the great astrologer, a famous astrologer who came to see Krsna's birth affair, he was Gargamuni. His name was Gargamuni. Yes. So that Gargamuni, by astrology, said to Krsna's father Nanda Maharaja, "This boy, this child who is born as your son, He had three colors before." Asan varnas trayo hy asya: "This child had three colors before. I see." Just see the astrology. From astrology he says that "He had three colors before." That means God. "He had three colors before." Grhnato 'nuyugam tanuh: "According to the age, according to the millennium, He had three other colors." Suklo raktas tatha pita idanim krsnatam gatah: "And He had that white color and red color and yellow color. Idanim, just now, He has assumed this black color." So this was the astronomical calculation of Krsna's birth. Satya-yuge dharma-dhyana karaya 'sukla'-murti dhari'.

Now, sukla-murti, that white incarnation of God, He will teach the people... The incarnation of God, why does He come? That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita. Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati [Bg. 4.7]. Tadatmanam srjamy aham. The incarnation of God comes... When there is discrepancy all over the world about religious principle, the incarnation comes. So Lord Caitanya says that in the Satya-yuga this incarnation of God in white color, He preached meditation, dhyana. Therefore meditation is for the Satya-yuga. Satya-yuga means when cent percent people are pure. That is called Satya-yuga. And Treta-yuga means 75% are pure, 25% impure. And Dvapara-yuga means 50%, 50% pure and 50%... And Kali-yuga means 75% impure and 25% may be pure. (laughter) This is Kali-yuga. And we are thinking we are advancing. Such a foolish civilization, they are less than 25% pure, they do not know what is purity, and they think that they are advancing in civilization. Civilization means to purify. The Aryans, Aryans means advance. And what way advance? Advance in eating? Advance in sleeping? No. Advance in purification. They are called Aryans. And the most advanced purified is called the brahmana. And less than that, the ksatriya. And less than that, vaisyas. And less than that, the sudras. And less than that, they are candalas. This is the classification of the human society. What is that classification? Due to this purity, who is pure, pure, purer, purer, and purest. So unless we become purest, we cannot approach Krsna.

So here it is said, satya-yuge dhyana karma. This dhyana, this medi... Why meditation? They were all pure; still, to become purest, dhyana karma. Kardamake vara dila yenho krpa kari. And He gave some, bestowed some blessings to Kardama Muni. Kardama Muni, he was a great penance taker, and he worshiped this incarnation of God, and he was blessed with a son. He was also incarnation of God, Kapila Muni. Kapila Muni. He is also incarnation of God, and He preached the sankhya philosophy, original. Later on, in the, just in this Kali-yuga, there is an imitation sankhya philosophy. So there are two sankhya philosophies: atheistic and nonatheistic. So (non)atheistic sankhya philosophy you will find in the Srimad-Bhagavatam preached by Kapila. His name was Kapila, Kapila Muni, son of Kardama and Devahuti. His mother's name was Devahuti; His father's name was Kardama. So this Kardama's name is mentioned here:

krsna-'dhyana' kare loka jnana-adhikari
tretara dharma yajna' karaya 'rakta'-varna dhari

Now in the Satya-yuga the people were trained to meditate on Krsna. They had, I mean to say, 100,000's of years they used to live, 100,000's of years. Just like we cannot..., our limit is one hundred years only, similarly, in the Satya-yuga the limit of living was 100,000's of years. And people would meditate. There are history... Meditate some fifty hundred thousands of years..., no, fifty thousands of years. Just like Valmiki Muni. Valmiki Muni meditated for fifty thousands of years, and then he wrote Ramayana. The Ramayana is not an ordinary book. You see? Therefore Ramayana is so much popular in India. Before the appearance of Rama, he wrote Ramayana, all the activities of Rama. So this Valmiki Muni... And what this Valmiki Muni was? This Valmiki Muni was a dacoit, a plunderer. He used to plunder, I mean to say, innocent men on the road, kill him and take everything. That was his business. But by chance, he was associated with Narada Muni, and he rectified him. This is the process. When a devotee meets even a dacoit like Valmiki Muni, he becomes... Narada Muni elevated so many fallen souls. This Valmiki Muni was also. So he was given this mantra, "Rama." He could not chant it. Then he was advised to just the opposite, mara. Mara means dead body. So mara mara mara. Three mara means one "Rama" is there. So in this way he was initiated and he became a great sage. For sixty thousands of years he meditated simply on "Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama." And when he was liberated, he wrote this Ramayana.

So that is the function of the Treta(Satya)-yuga. And Treta-yuga... Treta dharma yajna karaya... (aside:) There is one bug. Throw it. So in the Satya-yuga this meditation is possible, not in this age. Therefore those who are imitating the process of the Satya-yuga, they are simply wasting time. That's all. That is not recommended. Nobody can meditate in this age. Krte yad dhyayato visnum tretayam yajato makhaih [SB 12.3.52]. There are different yugas, millennium, and there are different processes. In this age, this is the process, kalau sankirtana, hari-kirtanat, simply chanting. Sit down anywhere, everywhere, and go on chanting, chanting, chanting.

So as the ages, either it is fallen or risen, that doesn't matter. Just like if you go to a doctor, he has got different kinds of medicine, different kinds of treatment. There is no question of being hopeless. There is no question of being hopeless. If we follow the injunction given in these authorized scriptures, then even in this Kali-yuga we can attain perfection. And the process is this: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

Thank you very much. Any question? (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Nitai: "The aggregate elements, namely the five gross elements, the five subtle elements, the four internal senses, the five senses for gathering knowledge, and the five outward organs of action, are known as the pradhana."

Prabhupada:

pancabhih pancabhir brahma
caturbhir dasabhis tatha
etac catur-vimsatikam
ganam pradhanikam viduh
 [SB 3.26.11]

Pradhana. Prakrti, purusa, pradhana. So pradhana is the total material energy, which is called mahat-tattva. We have discussed this subject matter last night, mahat-tattva. So mahat-tattva is the original total energy for material creation. Therefore Krsna, Mukunda, is sometime described as mahat-padam. Mahat-padam. Mahat-padam means "under whose lotus feet this whole total material energy is resting." Samasrita ye pada-pallava-plavam mahat-padam punya-yaso murareh. Samasritah. Therefore we have to take shelter of the Supreme, under whose lotus feet this mahat-tattva is also resting. Mahat-padam punya-yaso murareh. Punya-yasah. If you glorify Krsna, then we become pious. Therefore there are so many prayers to be offered to Krsna. That is bhakti. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam, vandanam [SB 7.5.23]. Vandanam means offering prayer. This is also bhakti-marga.

So the total energy of material creation is called mahat-tattva or pradhana. Then, when the mahat-tattva is agitated by the three gunas, then they become divided into twenty-four elements, catur-vimsatikam ganam-originally one, but agitated by the gunas. Because material existence means the three gunas. When there is interaction of the three gunas, then this one mahat-tattva becomes divided into twenty-four catur-vimsati tattva. This is called Sankhya philosophy, to analyze and to study the twenty-four elements which is controlling the activities of the whole material world. That is called catur-vimsati tattva. What are they? Pancabhih . First the five elements, namely earth, water, fire, air, sky. This is pancabhih . Then next pancabhih , tan-matra, means rupa, rasa, gandha, sabda, sparsa. Form, rupa. Rupa means form; rasa means taste; sabda means sound; rupa, rasa, sabda-sparsa means touch; and rupa, rasa, sabda, sparsa, and...? Gandha.

So the sky is known by sabda, sound. This is tan-matra. This is... By sound, you can understand there is sky. If you clap, there is sound (claps). You understand there is sky. Sky is understood by the sabda. Then air is understood by sparsa. Just like electric fan is running, but even if I do not see it is running, because the air is touching my body, I can understand the air is there. Sparsa. Rupa, rasa, sabda. Sabda, sky, and rupa, fire. From the fire, rupa begins, form. Rasa. Rasa is in the taste in the water. And gandha is in the earth. So five gross elements and five subtle elements. The gross elements is understood by the subtle elements. Subtle means we cannot see it directly, but we can perceive it. So pancabhih pancabhih . And then dasabhih , ten senses, knowledge-acquiring, caksuh, karna, nasika: eyes, ear and nose and tongue, hands, in this way. And karmabhih . We work with hands, legs, genital. In this way, there are five working sense organs and five senses to gather knowledge. So five, five, and ten, twenty-four. And the subtle senses, mano buddhir ahankaras cittam-four.

So these four, twenty-four elements is covering the spirit soul. This body is made of these twenty-four elements. But above this, there is the soul. And above that, there is the Supersoul. So the atheists, they do not believe in the soul or Supersoul. But they have to believe in these twenty-four elements. Therefore European philosophers, they like this Sankhya philosophy of another Kapila. Here is Kapiladeva. He is the incarnation of God. But another, there is imitation Kapila. He is atheist Kapila. The Sankhya-karika, that is very much liked by the European philosophers, because in that Sankhya-karika these twenty-four elements are studied very minutely, without any reference to the soul and the Supersoul. That is the difference between two, Sankhya philosophy, atheist Sankhya philosophy, and theist Sankhya philosophy.

So etac catur-vimsatikam ganam pradhanikam viduh. Then, by their interaction, so many other things. But the dividing principle is the three gunas. Three gunas. Originally these twenty-four element; then they are acting with the three gunas, and they are creating so many varieties. As I have explained many times, that three into three equal to nine, and nine into nine equal to eighty-one. So at least eighty-one varieties of living entities there should be. But actually, there are eighty-four. Eight million four hundred... Curasi-laksa. Asitim caturas caiva, jiva-jatisu. That evolutionary process is there in the Padma-Purana, in the Vedic literature. Jalaja nava-laksani sthavara laksa-vimsati, krmayo rudra-sankhyakah, then paksinam dasa-laksanam, pasavah trimsal-laksani manusah catur-lak... Everything is there, evolution. So this is the creation, material creation. They are working by the material nature. But behind the material nature there is Krsna. Mohitam nabhijanati. Tribhir gunamayair bhavaih, mohitam nabhijanati.

So the living entities, being enamored or illusioned by the activities of this material nature, they are studying the material nature as Sankhya philosopher, as scientist, as mathematician, as chemist, as physist. They are all studying only these twenty-four elements, not beyond that. Beyond that is the soul, and beyond that is the Supersoul. When one can understand not only to study the material composition of the body but the moving spirit of the body, that is the beginning of Bhagavad-gita lesson, beginning, that "Don't be simply misled by studying the material elements of the body, but within the body there is the living force, living entity." Just try to understand that. Dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara [Bg. 2.13]. These twenty-four elements is changing the body from kaumaram yauvanam jara. Our body is being developed. It is not development; it is changing. But because the, from one body to another... In medical science they also admit change of, what is called, blood corpuscle. It is changing every moment. But how it is changing and coming into different body, that we cannot understand. But it is changing. Actually, it is changing from one body to another. That boy, the same boy, when he is grown up, he speaks differently than childish way because the body has changed. The body has changed. That is understood. But because we have no very nice brain, we cannot understand that the body is changing. We say, "It is growing." You can say it is growing, but growing is also changing. The original form is changed. That is called growing.

So these elementary principles are there, but they are growing into, or changing into different body by the interaction of the gunas. That is going on. That is called prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27]. Whatever is being done, that is by the interaction of the three modes of material nature. Actually, it is the prakrti, or pradhana. Pradhana change, come into manifestation. That is called prakrti. And there are twenty-four elements, and they are changing or growing, whatever you say. This is Sankhya philosophy. Unfortunately, people are not given lesson about the Sankhya philosophy in universities, in... If they are given in some philosophical classes -- that atheistic philosophy of Kapila, Sankhya philosophy, but not this Sankhya philosophy, theistic Sankhya philosophy.

So etac catur-vimsatikam ganam pradhanikam viduh. So these are the description of the twenty-four elements. Then you can go to the next verse.

Nitai: (leads chanting, etc.)

maha-bhutani pancaiva
bhur apo 'gnir marun nabhah
tan-matrani ca tavanti
gandhadini matani me
 [SB 3.26.12]

Prabhupada: Next also. Read. Indriyani dasa srotram.

Nitai: (leads chanting, etc.)

indriyani dasa srotram
tvag drg rasana-nasikah
vak karau caranau medhram
payur dasama ucyate
 [SB 3.26.13]

Prabhupada: Next, mano buddhih.

Nitai: (leads chanting, etc.)

mano buddhir ahankaras
cittam ity antar-atmakam
caturdha laksyate bhedo
vrttya laksana-rupaya
 [SB 3.26.14]

Prabhupada: That's all. Catur-vimsati tattva is finished.

Nitai: (reading) "There are five gross elements, namely earth, water, fire, air and ether. There are also five subtle elements: smell, taste, color, touch and sound. The senses for acquiring knowledge and the organs for action number ten, namely the auditory sense, the sense of taste, the tactile sense, the sense of sight, the sense of smell, the active organ for speaking, the active organs for working, those for traveling, generating and evacuating. The internal, subtle senses are experienced as having four aspects, in the shape of the mind, intelligence, ego and contaminated consciousness. Distinctions between them can be made only by different functions, since they represent different characteristics."

Prabhupada: So this is the analysis of the whole bodily construction. And beyond this bodily construction there is the soul. And when you study the characteristic of the soul, that is called spiritual knowledge. So long you are engaged with the characteristics of the bodily different elements, that is material study. So generally, people they are interested the medical science. Medical science is also interested with this body. The physical science... The physical science interest will be bhumir apah analo vayuh, maha-bhutani. And psychology, they are interested with the internal senses, mind: thinking, feeling, and willing.

So all this material scientific knowledge, they are simply interested with this body. But spiritual knowledge begins when you actually take seriously what Bhagavad-gita says or Srimad-Bhagavatam says or what the Vedas says. Vedas says everything, both the material and the spiritual. But for human being we are not only, we should not only be interested with the material science, but we should be interested... That is our main interest. Athato brahma jijnasa. Material science is going on. But you study or not study, the nature is going on. Prakrteh kriyamanani [Bg. 3.27]. Nature's work will go on, you study or not study. But because we are now entrapped with this material body, vasamsi... We are just now dressed. Just like I am now covered with this dress, cotton dress, similarly, I am now covered by these twenty-four elements. And I am working under this conception, that "I am these twenty-four elements" or "I am this body." So if I continue in that way, then I remain in the animal kingdom. Because the dog is also thinking like that, that "I am this body." He may not be able to analyze the bodily construction. He may not be a medical man or psychologist. That doesn't matter. But he thinks that "I am this body," and he is working like that. So we human being, if I study all the science, physics, chemistry, psychology, and other material science, soil expert... Soil expert means studying the earth, that's all. There are so many. So in spite of all these things, if we remain in the darkness of my spiritual identity, then I am no better than the cats and dogs. This is conclusion.

So this so-called advancement of material science means that we are kept in the darkness of spiritual knowledge. We are still in the platform of animal concept of life. Therefore sastra says,

yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke
sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih
yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicij
janesv abhijnesu sa eva go-kharah
 [SB 10.84.13]

Go-khara. Go-khara. Go means cow, and khara means ass. So in spite of all our educational advancement, if we remain in the darkness of bodily concept of life, then we are no better than go-khara. Go, go means cow, and... So we should not remain that. The human life is meant for above this. Athato brahma jijnasa. This human life is for inquiring about the soul. And the knowledge of the soul begins... That is the first instruction in the Bhagavad-gita, that don't be simply enwrapped or encumbered with these twenty-four elements, bodily ele..., material, but you should understand that asmin dehe, there is the possessor, or occupier, of the body. Dehinah asmin dehe. Dehino 'smin... What is that verse?

dehino 'smin yatha dehe
kaumaram yauvanam jara
tatha dehantara-praptih
 [Bg. 2.13]

Dehinah. Dehinah means the possessor, the possessor of this body. I am the possessor. You are the possessor.

That is also another chapter explained very nicely, ksetra-ksetrajna. This body is ksetra. Every one of us, we have got a particular body, and we are working with this body. That is called ksetra. Just like the cultivator. He works in the field, tilling the field, and getting the desired result, as much he has got nice fertile field or not fertile field. According to the field, he is getting different result. Similarly we, the living entity or the soul, we have got a field of activities, this body. And by... (pause) (someone shouts) (Aside:) What is that? ...working on this body, we are getting different result. That is called karma. Karmany evadhikaras te ma phalesu kadacana. So according to different karma, we are getting different body. In this way, bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19], we are getting one body, and then again this body is annihilated, and we get another body. And there are 8,400,000 types of bodies. In this way our life is going on in this material world.

But our real business is that "Why we are put into the cycle of birth and death, and according to the body we are suffering different types of miserable condition of life?" Actually, we are trying to enjoy life, sukham, but it is a struggle for existence. Manah sasthani indriyani prakrti-sthani karsati. We are having great struggle for existence. Therefore we should study philosophically and scientifically, analyze what is this body and what is beyond the body, soul, and what is the soul's function, where is the soul's place, ultimately what is the end goal of the activities of the soul. This is human life. And all this knowledge can be had from the Vedic literature, and the Srimad-Bhagavatam is the essence of Vedic literature. Nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam idam [SB 1.1.3].

Vyasadeva, after writing all the Vedic literature, he was not satisfied. He wrote the four Vedas, then the Puranas -- Puranas means supplementary to the Vedas -- and then Vedanta-sutra, the last word of the Vedic knowledge, Vedanta-sutra. But he was not satisfied. So Narada Muni, his spiritual master, he inquired that "Why you are feeling dissatisfaction after writing so many books, giving knowledge to the human society?" He said, "Sir, yes, I know that I have written... But I am not getting satisfaction. I do not know what is the reason." Then Narada Muni said, "The dissatisfaction is due to your not describing the activities of the Supreme Lord. Therefore you are not satisfied. You have simply discussed the external elements, but the internal elements, you have not discussed. Therefore you are dissatisfied. Now you do it." So under the instruction of Vyasadeva..., er, Narada Muni, his spiritual master, Vyasadeva, his last mature contribution is Srimad-Bhagavatam. Srimad-bhagavatam amalam puranam yad vaisnavanam priyam. Therefore the Vaisnava, they regard the Srimad-Bhagavatam as amalam puranam. Amalam puranam means... Amalam means without any contamination. These all other puranas, they are dealing with karma, jnana, yoga. Therefore they are samalam, with material contamination. And Srimad-Bhagavatam, simply dealing with bhakti; therefore it is amalam. Bhakti means directly in connection with the Supreme Lord, bhakta and Bhagavan, and the transaction is bhakti. There is Bhagavan, and there is bhakta, just like master and the servant. And the relationship between the master and servant, the transaction, is service.

So service we have to... That is our natural, natural instinct. We are giving service. But being contaminated, that consciousness, citta, being contaminated by these material elements, we are trying to give service in different way. Somebody is interested in giving service to the family, to the community, to the society, to the nation, to the humanity, to the more and more, but all these services, they are contaminated. But when you begin your service in Krsna consciousness, that is perfect service. That is perfect life. So the Krsna consciousness movement is trying to raise the human society to the perfect platform of rendering service.

Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test
Pradyumna: Translation: "The younger brothers of Maharaja Yudhisthira observed that the age of Kali had already arrived throughout the world and that the citizens of the kingdom were already affected by irreligious practice. Therefore they decided to follow in the footsteps of their elder brother."

Prabhupada: This kalina... We are reading kalinadharmena. Kalina adharma. The two are mixed together becomes one, a sandhi. Kalinadharmena. So kali. Kali means quarrel, unnecessarily quarrel. Kali... Kalina, "by the age of Kali." This is the age of Kali. There are four ages -- Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali -- degrading, gradual degrading. This nature's way is to degrade. That is the nature's way, time factor. Just like you construct a very nice house today, good looking, fresh, but by ages it will become old. Your body, my body, in youthhood it is very beautiful, and in due course of time it will be ugly like me. So this is the work of the time. Similarly, nature's way, there are four ages: Satya-yuga, Treta-yuga, Dvapara-yuga, Kali-yuga. Seasonal changes.

So in Satya-yuga, the religious principles are followed strictly, cent percent. That is called Satya-yuga. And Treta-yuga, twenty-five percent reduced. That means seventy-five percent religious principles and twenty-five percent irreligious. And the Dvapara-yuga, fifty-fifty: fifty percent religious and fifty percent irreligious. And the Kali-yuga, seventy-five percent irreligious and twenty-five percent religious, gradually reducing to nil -- no more religion. Then finished. Then there will be devastation. Again Satya-yuga will begin. This is the way of change of Satya-yuga -- Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali. The duration of Satya-yuga is about eighteen hundred thousand of years. Eighteen hundred thousands of years. Hundred thousand. Eighteen hundred. Similarly, Treta-yuga, about twelve hundred thousands of years. Similarly, Dvapara-yuga, eight hundred thousands of years. And Kali-yuga four hundred thousands of years. This is the beginning of Kali-yuga. Out of four hundred thousands of years, we have passed only 5,00 years. Not only 400,000, 432,000's of years. There is regular calculation in the Vedic sastra. So out of that, we have passed 5,000 years. That Kali-yuga has begun just after the Battle of Kuruksetra. So we have passed only 5,000 years of this Kali-yuga. There are still balance, 427,000's of years, still balance.

So the Kali's friends... Just like a man is known by his company. So Kali-yuga is the age of irreligion. Therefore, quarrel and fighting. Quarrel and fighting, communal fighting. Unnecessarily they will form a community, a group, all rascals, another group, another group of rascals, and they will fight unnecessarily. Just like this nationalism. This is simply group of rascals. That's all. Why rascal? Because irreligious, therefore rascal. So "Big, big, men, big, big scientist, big, big... Still, they are rascal?' Yes. Still, they are rascal. Why? Because irreligious. They do not know what is God. Therefore they are rascal. This is the only test. "Whether you know God?" "No, sir." "Then you are rascal." That's all. No more test. One test is sufficient: "Whether you know God?" Because this human life is meant for knowing God. This temple is meant for human being, not for the cats and dogs. So if you (do not) know God, then you are a rascal. You are exactly like the cats and dogs. That's all. This is the verdict. Now you can fight. "Why you are calling me cats and dogs?" But this is the... We are talking, following Krsna, the great authority. But what Krsna says, that is right. If you scrutinize by your logic, argument, philosophy, science, you will find that Krsna is perfectly right. Therefore we accept Krsna.

Unless Krsna is perfectly right, why should we accept Krsna? If He is ordinary rascal, then why, what is the use of reading His book, Bhagavad-gita? No. All the acaryas, all the saintly scholars, they have accepted. Therefore we have accepted. Because He is beyond all, I mean to say, faults. What is the difference between ordinary man and a liberated man? Liberated means not under the conditions of material nature. He is called liberated. Liberated means who is not conditioned by the laws of nature. He is called liberated. So Krsna is the liberated Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore He has no defects. And those who are... Just like we are..., we are not liberated. Therefore we have got four defects. The four defects are that we commit mistake. Anyone, big, big man, he must commit mistake, because he is not liberated. He is under the laws of material nature. Who is here in this meeting who can say that "I have never committed any mistake"? Is there anybody? However learned scholar you may be, commit mistake is inherent. Similarly, to become illusioned. Illusioned means to accept something which you are not or which is not fact. That is called illusion. Just like sometimes we see that the sun is on the western side, but reflection is on the glass, and the glass is reflecting some light. So we are thinking that sun has come to the other side. We have got this experience. Sun is this side, reflecting the sun shining, and on the glass or on mirror, and the same reflection is this side. So we are thinking that "Sun is this side. The sunlight is coming..." That is called illusion. This is example of illusion, which is not fact. But it is appearing. False thing appearing as truth, that is called maya. This is the explanation of maya. Maya. Ma means "not," ya means "this." Maya, what you are experiencing, that is not. That is called maya. So a conditioned soul... A child will think that... Although the fact is sun is this side, by seeing the reflection a child may say, "The sun is this side." So that is called illusion.

So we are all illusioned because we accept this body as self. "What you are?" "Oh, I am American." "Why American?" "Because this is American body." But I am not this body. So... But we accept. It is going on. This illusion is going on. Mistake is going on. And in spite of becoming illusioned and mistaken, I am posing myself as great scholar, philosopher, scientist. Therefore cheater. But I do not know the things because I am already illusioned and I commit mistake. And still, I am proving that "I am theologician," "I am scientist," "I am philosopher." Then change again. I say today something and tomorrow something else, because I am mistaken, illusioned. I must go on speaking like that, nonsense, today something, tomorrow something. And this is going on (as) advancement. What is this advancement? If you do not know something as real, you say something today, and tomorrow you say something, the same mistake, again, day after tomorrow, you say something, where is your knowledge? There is no knowledge, but still, he is posing to be man of knowledge. He is getting Nobel Prize. This is called cheating. And people are, those who are cheated, they are accepting this cheating knowledge. Therefore the whole human society is full of cheaters and cheated. Full of.

So bhrama, pramada, vipralipsa(?) and karanapatava. Then if somebody says that "Why you are speaking that these men are cheaters and cheated and illusioned and in maya?" Now, because the senses are imperfect. Because you are gathering knowledge by the senses. There are five senses, acquire knowledge, and the five senses act according to that knowledge. And these sense objects. There are sense objects. Just like you have got eyes, you have to see something objective, rupa, form. The knowledge acquired by the eyes is to understand the form. Similarly, the knowledge acquired by the ears is to acquire knowledge from the sound. Because physical means the sound, light, form. These things are physical things. So we have got senses to acquire knowledge. So five knowledge-acquiring senses, five working senses, and five sense objects, and I am there. This is called sixteen elements. And then five material elements, earth, water, fire, air, and three subtle elements, eight. So in this way the whole world, this universe, cosmic manifestation, is a composition of these eight elements, er, twenty-four elements. And beyond these twenty-four elements, I am the soul, and beyond myself, there is the Supersoul. This is knowledge. This is knowledge.

So without this knowledge, nobody is perfect, and without being perfect, if we hear from somebody who is not perfect, it is simply waste of time. And that is the symptoms of Kali-yuga. Therefore it is said, kalina adharma-mitrena. And the adharma-mitra, this is the composition of ignorance. Now, the friends... Which friend helps me to keep me in this perpetual ignorance? These are illicit sex, intoxication, meat-eating and gambling, these four friends. You associate with these four friends, you will be very easily advancing under the influence of Kali-yuga. This is the fact. Kalinadharmena. So formerly the kings, the government men... King means the supreme executive head of government. They could understand that "These things are now coming." Drstva, "seeing practically." Because as soon as people are addicted to these four principles -- illicit sex, meat-eating, intoxication and gambling -- when everyone can see, that means Kali-yuga. Drstva.

So how they saw? They saw the practical. They know how to see. Just like in the chemical laboratory, they see the characteristic of a certain thing analyzed, and they say, "Yes, it is perfect. It is not perfect. Because these things are wanting, so it is not pure. It is adulterated." Chemical examina... And if these characteristics are there... In every chemical book, every chemical has got some characteristic. Just like potassium cyanide. The chemical examiners have not experienced what is the taste. Because as soon as you taste, you finish. Potassium cyanide. You know this. So therefore in the chemical there is not mention, "the taste of the potassium cyanide." Nobody has still tasted. So there is a Hindi word in India, delhika ladu yakaya abhipataya ya lakaya abhipataya...(?) There is a delhika ladu. You make ladu. So delhika ladu. It is very slang language. Delhika ladu yakaya abhipastya. Delhika ladu is so made that one who has tasted it, he laments, and who has not tasted, he laments. Both of them. So this potassium cyanide is like that, a chemical. The chemists, because they do not know what is the taste, so they say that "We do not know. Analysis is imperfect." And those who have tasted, they cannot say. They are finished. (laughter) So this is the position.

So this delhika ladu is referred to, Delhi prostitute. Delhika ladu. So we do not wish to discuss these things, but so many things. Not only prostitute, even sex life, it is like that. Anyone who has tasted, he also laments, and who has not tasted, he also laments. This is the position. This is the position. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham [SB 7.9.45]. Maithunadi. Maithunadi means sexual intercourse. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham kanduyanena karayor iva duhkha-duhkham. It is a pleasure just like itching sensation. It is all described. Yan maithunadi... A grhamedhi... Grhamedhi means a so-called householder. There are two words: grhamedhi and grhastha. Grhastha means... That is called asrama, grhastha-asrama, to live with wife and children, but the business is how to developed Krsna consciousness. That is grhastha-asrama, as we recommend. And where there is no such attempt how to develop Krsna consciousness, simply living like cats and dogs... They have also sex life. They also produce children. They also eat. They also work. Such kind of life, household life, working day and night simply for sense pleasure, and at night they have got sense pleasure... That is also described in the Bhagavata: diva carthehaya rajan. At night either sleep or enjoy sex life, and in daytime, simply work hard, "Where to get money?" And as you get money, spend it for maintaining your family. Nidraya hriyate naktam. Nidra means sleeping. Hriyate, that night is passed. Nidraya hriyate naktam vyavayena ca va vayah [SB 2.1.3]. Or one who has got facility to enjoy sex, so night is passed. One who has no... Everyone has practically, but... Two things: sleep or sex. And then, at daytime, carthehaya. Artha. Artha means money. Ihaya means trying for to get it. Diva carthehaya rajan. All right, they are getting money. Then? Then kutumba-bharanena va, spending for kutumba, for the dependents. That's all. So finished. Then where is the time for Krsna consciousness? That is called grhamedhi. But grhastha means they will see whether every moment is utilized for Krsna. That is grha...

So human civilization means grhastha, not grhamedhi. If you become grhastha, then you are nice. Then you are advancing towards self-realization. That is required. Because the cats and dogs cannot become grhastha. That is not possible. If you say... If you have got a dog, you get another female dog, "My dear dog, you get your wife, live peacefully, chant Hare Krsna." "No, sir, it is not possible because I am dog. Because I am dog, therefore I cannot be satisfied. I must find out another illicit sex and create trouble," then phat! He engages. Then fight. That is Kali-yuga. Unnecessarily create, by illicit sex life, enemy, and then become killed and finish your life. That is called grhamedhi. You require wife. That's all right. Take wife. There is no scarcity of wife. Live peacefully. Chant Hare Krsna. "No, I have got my wife; I want another. I want another." Like dogs. Yes. So the dog civilization cannot help us. This will not help us. Human life is meant for something else. Nayam deho deha-bhajam nrloke kastan kaman arhate vid-bhujam [SB 5.5.1]. Everything is discussed in Bhagavata. Therefore we request the whole human society to read these valuable books, valuable. Oh, they are missing the opportunity. Let them read these books. Then life will be successful.

So this human life is not meant for like dogs and cats and hogs. That is said in the Bhagavatam. You will find in the Fifth Canto, Fifth Chapter, Rsabhadeva. Every word is so valuable. Just like here in these verses, sarve tam anunirjagmur bhratarah. How ideal brothers they were. "My elder brother is going, retiring, going to the Himalayan side," all the brothers followed. When the elder brother was king, they acted. They did not fight, that "We are five brothers. Why you shall become king? I shall become king." No, there was a fight. One of them, the elder brother, Maharaja Yudhisthira, was enthroned, and the other brothers, they acted as commanders of the soldiers. One brother is going one side of the earth to fight, to subdue the rascals. There was fight to subdue the rascals, not for ambition. Because he was emperor, so anyone who is doing wrong irreligiously, go there and fight. That was fight. That is called dharma-yuddha. Just like you can maintain police force, military force. What for? Whenever there is outlaws, go and punish them. That should be the system. That should be... Military force is required, violence is required, when there is irreligion. Then must be, they must be made religious. And because such government was there... That we have discussed. During Maharaja Yudhisthira's time, everything was peaceful, adayovyadha(?)... Even people did not suffer from excessive heat, excessive cold. This is also another punishment. Just like disease is punishment, similarly, excessive heat and excessive cold is also punishment. That is not very good. But Yudhisthira Maharaja's time was such, they did not feel. People did not feel. It is nature's punishment. Just like I was proposing to go to, what is that place? Florida, Florida,

Devotee: Miami.

Prabhupada: Miami. So Karandhara said that there also the temperature has reduced. It has come to 50 or something like that, 40. The temperature is high there.

So nature can change at any time, at any time. You are not controller of nature. You are under the control of nature. That we forget. This is our illusion. We are under the control of material nature fully, cent percent, and still, we are declaring independence. What kind of independence you have got? Any kind of independence can be finished by one kick of nature. And still, you declare independent. You cannot be independent. When you go above the control of the material nature, then you can say independent. But they do not know that. And nature is controlled by God. That also they do not know. Nature... Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14]. Just like police force. Police force is under the control of the government, and you are under the control of police force. Everyone knows it. So how you can get out of the police force? When you are not criminal. That's all. Similarly, nature is like police force, this material nature. As soon as you become irreligious, making friendship with Kali and his friends, then you will be punished. Nature will... There will be severe cold, there will be this blast, that blast, and no production, and famine, pestilence, so many things. Nature can disturb you, natural. That is called adhidaivika, which is beyond your control. Adhidaivika. If the Pacific Ocean within a second overflows your Los Angeles town, what you can do? What your scientists can do? "Nothing, sir." But it can be done, at any moment. What is the difficulty? One big wave. Skyscraper building, all skyscrapers will be finished. So that is called nature's disturbance.

So there are other disturbances also. This is called natural disturbance. Then other disturbance is... Your body is the source of so many disturbances. Even you don't feel nature's disturbances, then your body friend, which you have taken so friendly, that "My body is everything. Exercise, keep this body very perfect to eat, eat meat and drink." But this body will give you trouble. The mind will give you trouble. This is called adhyatmika. Everything is analyzed. Adhyatmika and adhibhautika. You do not create any enemy, but your neighbor will be enemy, unnecessarily. Your friend will be enemy. Your brother will be enemy. Your son will be enemy. There are so many instance. This is called adhibhautika. Just like your, somebody's dog. Unnecessarily... We have seen. You are passing the road, and this dog is so faithful, he become your enemy. "Gow! Gow! Gow! Why you are passing here? Why you are passing?" You see? The mosquito will be enemy. The bugs will be enemy. The insects will be enemy. You go on killing. Go on killing with spray.

So, so many enemies, so much troubles is being created. Who has created? The nature. You haven't go to create, but nature will create to give you disturbances. This is your position. And you are thinking, "We are very happy. We are very happy in this material life." Just...How mudha, nonsense rascals. So in the beginning I said, "All these rascals." So are they not rascals? They are harassed in so many ways; still, they are thinking, "We are making advance and we are happy." Just see. So are the whole situation is not full of rascals? They do not know. They are accepting unhappiness as happiness. This is called maya. This is called maya. Maya-mohita-jiva. And you cannot get out of this illusion and mistakes unless you surrender to Krsna.

daivi hy esa gunamayi
mama maya duratyaya
mam eva ye prapadyante
mayam etam taranti te
 [Bg. 7.14]

This is the medicine. This is the only counteraction. You cannot...

Suppose you are being harassed by the police. You are put into the prisonhouse. And in so many ways you are being harassed by the criminal department. How you can get out? You simply file a petition, "Sir I am now experienced. I will never commit this criminal act. Kindly excuse me and get me released." That is the only way. Similarly, you can be very proud that "I don't care for God. There is no God. I am God. You are God." You can go on talking nonsense like that, but the maya will give you so much trouble. But if you are sane man, then you will admit that "This was a wrong thing. Please excuse me." And then it will be possible. But that is not possible. Especially in this age, in Kali-yuga, the age is very strong and deteriorated that in spite of our daily class, daily instruction, the Kali is so strong that capturing, "Please come under my control and be killed. Please come under my... Be killed." "Yes, I will go." This is going on.

So Yudhisthira Maharaja and his brothers, they say, "Now the Kali yuga has begun." Drstva and sprstah prajah, "All the citizens and all the land. Now... We have done our duty. Now let us retire. The next king, Maharaja..." He's their grandchild, Maharaja Pariksit. "He will do his duty." So it is the duty of the king to see, to give protection from this onslaught of nature, to make the life successful. That is the duty of the king. That is the duty of the father. That is the duty of the spiritual master. That is the duty of friends and relatives. Then one should cooperate, one should give protection. Just like these children are there. If the father, mother and the teacher, they do not give these children protection, then what is their future hope?

So unnecessarily, so-called education will not help. Let them become Krsna conscious. That is the duty of the government. Just like we are not speaking on the slogan, "In God We Trust." Is that that slogan, "In God We Trust"? So this is a slogan, but it is the duty of the government, that "We are using this slogan, but actually what we are doing about people's education that they may know what is God and then trust?" But everyone is godless. And still, as a matter of fashion, we are writing, "In God We Trust." This is another cheating. Nobody trusts in God, and they write, "In God We Trust." And unless I write... Of course I do not wish to say very harsh word, that unless I cheat you that way, how a man will accept one piece of paper as one thousand dollars? (laughter) You see? It is a grand cheating, that "I am giving one thousand dollars to you." But if I value, it is not even one farthing. This is called maya. It is not, but I accept. I accept. If people become enlightened, "No, we are not going to accept this piece of paper as one thousand dollars. We must have gold," so many things will be solved immediately. So many things. But because we agree to be cheated, the cheaters are cheating and things are going on wrong. This is called Kali-yuga.

Thank you very much. (end)

"From Pretension to Purity"

"From Pretension to Purity"

68/12/23 Los Angeles, Bhagavad-gita 3.6-10

Prabhupada: Hare Krsna. Yes, read. Which verse? Go on.

Sudama: "One who restrains the senses and organs of action but whose mind dwells on sense objects certainly deludes himself and is called a pretender [Bg. 3.6]."

Prabhupada: Yes. This is very important thing. Yoga indriya-samyamya. Yoga, the definition of yoga means sense control, controlling the sense. So here Krsna says that you cannot control your senses artificially. It is not possible. Those who are trying... Just like some of the yogis, they close their eyes, "Oh, I'll not see beautiful woman." That is another practice, but that does not mean that he can control his senses. No. You cannot curb down the natural force of sense. This is the secret. People do not know. And if you let the senses go on in its own way, that is also dangerous. Then you are going to hell. Adanta-gobhir visatam tamisram. If your senses are not controlled, then your senses will drag you to the darkest region of hell. That is another problem.

Generally, in the material world, adanta -- adanta means uncontrolled, go -- go means senses. Adanta-gobhir visatam tamisram punah punas carvita-carvananam [SB 7.5.30]. Simply repeating, chewing the chewed. The whole history of the world, you just study, is a history of sense gratification. Just take, for example, some twenty years ago one Mr. Adolf Hitler came in the scene, and there was great upheaval as war in Europe and America. From 1933 to 1947 or something like that, the whole world was in trouble. But he is gone, finished. And what did he do? Sense gratification, that's all. He wanted that this way government should be, according to his own sense. Another person, just like Mr. Churchill or your President Roosevelt, they said "No. The sense gratification should not be like that. The sense gratification should be like this." (laughter) So it is the war of sense gratification, that's all. One leader is presenting a program of sense gratification, another leader is presenting another program of sense gratification, and there is clash. This is going on. This is the history of the world.

And another class, they are thinking "Oh, there are so much trouble simply for sense gratification. Let us control our senses." Brahma satyam jagan mithya, just like Mayavadi philosophers, Sankaracarya. They say this world is useless. This world is useless. Only Brahman, the Supreme Brahman, impersonal Brahman, that is truth. That is also another sense gratification. That is bigger sense gratification. Why? These Mayavadi philosophers, they want to merge into the existence of the Supreme One. That means by becoming Hitler, Churchill or Roosevelt, their senses were not very much satisfied. "Now," they say, "this world is false. Now let me become the Supreme." That is another sense gratification.

So this world, without Krsna consciousness, is simply sense gratification. That's all. One may present in one way, another may present in another way, but it is sense gratification. Therefore the so-called yogis, fifteen minutes meditation or, say, fifteen hours meditation or fifteen months meditation, but as soon as meditation finished -- sense gratification. That's all.

So this sense gratification program is very strong. And so long you will indulge in sense gratification, the repetition of birth and death will go on. The repetition of birth. This body...Bhagavata says that these people are working for sense gratification. Nunam pramattah. Pramattah means mad after sense gratification. Kurute vikarma. And for sense gratification, they are acting so abominably that it is not to be uttered. Kurute vikarma yad indriya-pritaya aprnoti. They have engaged their life in sense gratification. Na sadhu manye, oh this is not good. This is not good.

Why? Yata, because, atmanah, the spirit soul, atmano 'yam... Asann api klesada asa dehah [SB 5.5.4]. This body is temporary, but so long this body is there, you'll have to suffer. What is that suffering? The sum total of suffering is birth, death, old age and disease. This is due to this body. Therefore the problem is how to stop this material body, repetition. Today I have got this body, Indian, tomorrow I may get American, next birth... Tomorrow means next birth. Next birth another, next birth another, next birth another -- it is going on. Going on. There is no stoppage, this transmigration of the soul.

But so long you do not stop it, there is no question of being freed from sufferings. They do not know it. They are thinking they are advancing. What advancement you have made? These sufferings are there -- birth, death, old age and disease. You cannot stop it. Abrahma-bhuvanal lokah, and even you go to this moon planet or to the highest planet, these four things will follow. So therefore sense gratification must be stopped. But if you want to stop it artificially it is impossible. Neither by this yoga process, neither by this jnana process. Simply for the time being you can check.

Just like a naughty boy. By force, you can stop him acting mischievously. But as soon as he gets opportunity, again he will act so. Similarly, senses are very strong. You cannot stop them artificially. Therefore the only remedy is Krsna consciousness. These boys in Krsna consciousness, this is also sense gratification, eating nice prasada, dancing, chanting, reading philosophy -- but it is in connection with Krsna. That is the significance. Nirbandhah krsna-sambandhe. It is the sense gratification of Krsna. Not directly, but because I am part and parcel of Krsna, my senses are automatically satisfied. This process should be adopted. Artificially...

This Krsna consciousness movement is an art of living by which you will feel your senses are fully satisfied, but you are going to be free next life. This is the nice process. And artificially if you want to stop your senses, you will fail. That Krsna says, "One who restrains the sense and organs of action but whose mind dwells on sense objects."

Just like Visvamitra Muni. There were many instances. He was a great king and he wanted to be yogi. And he went to forest, gave up his kingdom, went to forest. And he was meditating very seriously, and Indra, king of heaven, he sent some society girls of heavenly planet, Menaka. And she came. She began to dance before the closed-eyes yogi, and as soon as he heard, "Oh, there is very nice female voice and dancing," and as soon as he opened, he became captivated, embraced her. So everything gone. You see? So sense gratification, you cannot stop artificially. Nirbandhah krsna-sambandhe.

Therefore we advised our students, either boys and girls, that if you have... Of course, if you are serious in Krsna consciousness, you forget all these nonsense sense gratification, but still if you are disturbed, all right, get yourself married. Live peacefully, husband and wife, and both be engaged in Krsna consciousness. Gradually, you'll forget, both husband and wife. Don't try artificially. Artificially you'll never be successful. But if you can avoid it by advance and strong Krsna consciousness...

Just like Haridasa Thakura. But don't try to imitate Haridasa Thakura. His stage was different. We cannot imitate. We can simply follow. Anukarana, anusarana, there are two Sanskrit words. One is imitation, and one who is following the footprints. If one tries to follow the footprints of great personalities, that is very nice, but we cannot imitate. Imitate. Imitation is dangerous.

Just like Lord Siva, he drank an ocean of poison and he kept it on the throat. He did not allow to go down. So therefore his name is Nilakantha. It became bluish. His neck is blue. But if somebody imitates Lord Siva and indulges intoxication, ganja, he'll go to hell. He is powerful. Somebody says "Well, Lord Siva is a smoker so we can also smoke." No. You cannot imitate. You can simply follow.

Just like the sunshine. The sunshine is so strong that it is absorbing the moisture of the filthy place, contaminated place where one is passing stool and urine, but still it is sun because sun is so powerful. But if you live in that place for some time where urine and stools are thrown, then you'll be contaminated immediately because you are not powerful. Tejiyasam na dosaya.

Those who are powerful, if they somebody does something which is very extraordinary, that is not to be imitated. You have to follow the rules and regulations. That will give you progress. Don't try to imitate. Just be in your position, try to follow the rules and regulations, and chant Hare Krsna, and gradually you'll get result. There is no need of being hasty. Go on.

Sudama: Verse number seven: "On the other hand, he who controls the senses by the mind and engages his active organs in works of devotion without attachment is by far superior [Bg. 3.7]."

Prabhupada: Yes. Instead of artificially trying to meditate and control the senses, just engage your senses in the activities of Krsna consciousness and gradually you will be happy. Your senses will be controlled. Go on.

Sudama: Purport: "Instead of becoming a pseudo-transcendentalist for the sake of wanton living and sense enjoyment, it is far better to remain in one's own business and execute the purpose of life which is to get free from material bondage and enter into the kingdom of God. The svartha-gati or goal of self-interest..."

Prabhupada: Svartha-gati, svartha-gati. Yes.

Sudama: "...or goal of self-interest is to reach Visnu. The whole varna and asrama system is designed to help us reach this goal of life. A householder can also reach this destination by regulated service in Krsna consciousness. For self-realization one can live a controlled life as prescribed in the sastras and continue carrying out his business without attachment, and that will lead him gradually to the progressive path. Such a sincere person who follows this method is far better situated than the false pretender who adopts show-bottle spiritualism to cheat the innocent public. A sincere sweeper in the street is far better than the charlatan meditator who works only for the sake of making a living."

Prabhupada: Yes. My Guru Maharaja used to say that don't accept spiritual life for living. Just like we are sending the sankirtana party. If we take it, "Oh, it is very easy method for living without working. We are getting money for our livelihood," this is not wanted. If your spiritual life is for...

Just like there are so many professional chanters. Not here. In India. Their business is... Because people like chanting, so they have made this chanting business. Or professional Bhagavata reader. People like reading of Bhagavata. There are many expert Bhagavata readers. They can show many caricature just to attract people, and such people, generally, they describe the rasa-lila of Krsna. Because rasa-lila is resembling just like dealings between young boys and girls, so they take that part, particularly, rasa-lila. Easy way.

And just like here in America, I've seen so many persons. They are writing books on Krsna about Krsna's pastimes with the gopis, as if Krsna has no other pastime. Because these things are very easily saleable. So they are writing books on that. I've seen one book written by Mr. Bhattacarya about these, Krsna's dealings with the gopis. No. This is not good. You should not take Krsna's activities, Krsna consciousness, professionally, for livelihood. That is dangerous. Your life should be sacrifice for Krsna. That is wanted. Otherwise you shall be pretender. Yes, go on.

Sudama: Verse number eight: "Perform your prescribed duty, which is better than not working. A man cannot even maintain his physical body without work [Bg. 3.8]."

Prabhupada: Yes. Krsna and Arjuna was talking. Krsna never said Arjuna, "Oh, my dear Arjuna, you are My friend, intimate friend and devotee. All right. You haven't got to fight with your... Everything will be done by Me. You go to Himalaya and meditate." No. He never said that. Krsna could do, Krsna could fight for Arjuna. He was all-powerful. Without fighting, He could give him everything, but still, He wanted to engage him -- that one should be engaged in Krsna consciousness along with his prescribed duty, that is required. Yes. (reading from text:) "Perform your prescribed duty which is better than not working."

If you cannot work in Krsna consciousness, then you better perform your prescribed duty according to varnasrama. Just like if you are a brahmana, then you have to act such way. If you are a ksatriya you have to work in that way. But don't stop working. Krsna says that, "A man cannot even maintain his physical body without work." He does not say that "You become Krsna conscious beggar and maintain your body in that way." No. That is not required. That service for Krsna should not be taken, should not be accepted as profession for livelihood. It should be simply for the service of the Lord. For the service of the Lord you can collect millions of dollars, but for your livelihood you cannot take one dollar from any person. Then you'll be indebted. You have to repay him. You cannot cheat others. It is very strictly enjoined. Simply for Krsna's satisfaction you can take, you can beg from others.

Just like according to Vedic system, begging is allowed. Begging allowed for whom? For the brahmanas, for the sannyasis, for the brahmacaris, because they collect money, beg from door to door for their benefit. Suppose a brahmacari is going to a householder's place or a storekeeper's place, "Give us some contribution." He is not collecting that money for his livelihood. He's quite competent to work. But that one dollar which he contributes to Krsna consciousness movement, it is good for him. At least, some portion of his energy goes to Krsna. That is the philosophy. Not that "Some way or other, I may collect some money and live very comfortably." No. We cannot do that. But you can accept Krsna's prasada. That is a different thing. But for personal comfort you have to work.

If you are a karmi, then you have to work. If you are a devotee, if you are completely... Devotee means hrsikena hrsikesa-sevanam bhaktir ucyate [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. Devotee means one who has engaged his senses cent percent for the service of the Lord, he is devotee, pure devotee.

So one who cannot become cent percent, all right, become fifty percent, twenty-five percent, one percent. Give something for Krsna. Don't be miser. Because whatever you have got, it is Krsna's. So long you catch it up, "It is mine," that is maya. You just let loose it for (chuckling) Krsna. Then it is freedom for you. You see. Go on.

Sudama: Verse number nine: "Work done as a sacrifice for Visnu has to be performed, otherwise work binds one to this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform prescribed duties for His satisfaction and in that way you will always remain unattached and free from bondage [Bg. 3.9]."

Prabhupada: Yes. Bondage means working for one's own account. The same example. Just like a soldier is fighting for the country under the command of the commander in chief. The more he's killing, he's getting promotion, he's getting medals. But the same man, when he comes back at home, if he kills one man, he's hanged. Why? Because that killing and this killing is not the same thing. So one who cannot engage himself cent percent in Krsna consciousness, let him remain in his own position and try to sacrifice for Visnu or Krsna as far as possible.

The prescription is for the grhasthas, for the householder, as exemplified by Srila Rupa Gosvami that his income was divided into four parts. Fifty percent for Krsna, twenty-five percent for the family and twenty-five percent for his personal reserve fund. That he showed us example how a grhastha should live. Not that out of hundred dollars, ninety-nine percent for my wife, and one percent for Krsna. No. Not like that. One should sacrifice at least fifty percent. If he cannot sacrifice this... Brahmacaris, sannyasis, they have sacrificed their everything, cent percent. The grhastha, they cannot do that. Because they have got wife, children. Therefore fifty percent.

So these are the prescribed rules and regulations for executing Krsna consciousness. Anyway, if one cannot sacrifice cent percent, let him sacrifice at least one percent, two percent. The more he does, that is, more he becomes free from bondage. And the more he uses his earning for sense gratification, the more he becomes bound up by the laws of material nature. Yes.

Sudama: Purport: "Since one has to work even for the simple maintenance of the body, the prescribed duties for a particular social position and quality are so made that that purpose can be fulfilled. Yajna means Lord Visnu or sacrificial performances. All sacrificial performances are meant for the satisfaction of Lord Visnu. The Vedas enjoin: yajna vai visnuh. In other words the same purpose is served whether you perform prescribed yajnas or directly serve Lord Visnu. Krsna consciousness is therefore the performance of yajna as it is prescribed here in this verse. The varnasrama institution also aims at this, satisfying Lord Visnu. Varnasramacaravata..."

Prabhupada: Acaravata purusena parah puman visnur aradhyate. By following the prescribed duties of a particular section of society in pursuance of the instruction of the sastra means satisfaction of Visnu. Yes.

Sudama: "Therefore one has to work for the satisfaction of Visnu. Any other work done in this material world will be a cause of bondage, for both good and evil work have their reactions, and any reaction binds the performer. One has only to work in Krsna consciousness to satisfy Krsna or Visnu and while performing such activities, one is supposed to be in a liberated stage. This is the great art of doing work, and in the beginning this process requires very good and expert guidance."

Prabhupada: Yes.

Sudama: "One should therefore act very diligently under the expert guidance of a devotee of Lord Krsna or under the direct instruction of Lord Krsna, under whom Arjuna had the opportunity to work. Nothing should be performed for sense gratification, but everything should be done for the satisfaction of Krsna. This practice will not only save one from the reactions of work but will also gradually rise one to the platform of the transcendental loving service of the Lord which alone can uplift one to the kingdom of God."

Verse number 10: "In the beginning of creation the Lord of all creatures sent forth generations of men and demigods along with sacrifices for Visnu, and blessed them by saying ‘Be thou happy by this yajna (sacrifice) because its performance will bestow upon you all desirable things [Bg. 3.10]."

Prabhupada: Yes. In the creation, after creation, the yajna was also created and everyone, created being, was ordered to perform the yajnas. One cannot... Yajna-dana-tapah-kriya na tyajyam. In the Bhagavad-gita also you'll find that you may be a renouncer, sannyasi. A renouncer, you have renounced this world. But the four things, yajna... Yajna means working for satisfaction of Visnu, yajna. Dana, charity. Yajna, dana, tapah. Tapah means austerity, following the rules and regulation for spiritual upliftment. These things are not to be renounced. If somebody says, "Oh, I have renounced the world," that does not mean you can renounce the service of the Lord. No.

Even if you are a sannyasi, you have to work for Krsna. Either you are a sannyasi or you are a householder or brahmacari, you have to work for Krsna. But the advantage of sannyasi is that because he has no encumbrances behind, he is detached from family relationship, he has full time service for Krsna. Similarly brahmacari, one who is not married, simply working under the order of the spiritual master, he has also cent percent time to work. So these are the secrets, that one has to work for Krsna. Either he's a brahmacari or sannyasi, it doesn't matter, or householder. Otherwise he'll be captured by maya. Go on.

Sudama: Purport: "The material creation by the lord of creatures, Visnu, is a sort of chance offered to the conditioned souls to come back to home, back to Godhead."

Prabhupada: Yes. This material creation, you'll find in the Bhagavad-gita that... Just like our body. This body is created at a certain period by the father and mother, and it remains for some time, it grows, it gives some by-product, then it dwindles, then vanishes. Just you can study from... Similarly the whole cosmic manifestation, this is a huge body. So it has a time of creation, its development, its by-products, its activities, then dwindling, then it will also vanish. It will also vanish.

But why this creation is there? This creation is there because those who are rebelled against God, Krsna, they are not allowed to enter into the kingdom of God. They are kept aloof and this creation is made just to give them chance to develop Krsna consciousness.

The Vedic sastras are there, the representatives of Krsna are there. They are teaching, "My dear conditioned souls, please adopt this means and end your repetition of birth and death. Come to the kingdom of God." This is a chance.

But if somebody takes it, "Now I have got my body, let me enjoy my senses to the fullest extent," then he is doomed. Then he loses the chance. Therefore this human form of body should not be wasted simply by sense gratification like cats and dogs.

Those who do not know what is the complication of this material nature, this spiritual life or material life, they are rascals. Simply they are enjoying the senses which have been given by laws of nature. They are thinking "The best things we have got, let us enjoy it to the fullest extent." No, it is not good. You must take the advantage to get out of this field of material activities and enter into the kingdom of God. This is a chance of creation. Go on.

Sudama: "All living entities within the material creation are conditioned by material nature because of their forgetfulness of their relationship to Visnu or Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Vedic principles are to help us understand this eternal relationship. The Lord says that the purport of the Vedas is to understand Him."

Prabhupada: Yes. That you will find in the Fifteenth Chapter, vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyah [Bg. 15.15].

What is the purpose of so many scriptures and Vedic literature? Just to give you information that there is Krsna and you are eternally related with Krsna. You have forgotten. Just revive that relationship and perfect your life. That is the sum and substance of all Vedic literature. Go on.

Sudama: "In the Vedic hymns it is said patim..."

Prabhupada: Patim visvasyatmesvaram. Yes. Go on.

Sudama: "The Lord of the living entities is the Supreme Personality of Godhead."

Prabhupada: Yes, Lord of the living entities. Just like here we have got a leader, a society leader or a party leader or a club leader, there are leaders. Some are led by somebody, some are led by somebody. We don't wish to discuss. But there is a leader. Without leader, nobody goes to hell, neither to heaven. There must be one leader. The supreme leader is Krsna. Leader of the leader, leader of the leader. There are various types of leaders. Nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam, eko bahunam yo vidadhati kaman (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). These are the wordings in the Vedas. So He is the supreme leader. We are following some leader. Some leader is following Stalin, somebody Hitler, some leader is following Gandhi, somebody's following somebody, somebody. There must be some leader. But why not the supreme leader, who will never misguide you? He will give you actual path of happiness. Then you will become happy.

Krsna therefore said, sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66]. "You give up all nonsense leadership. Simply come unto Me, surrender unto Me. I'll give you protection." That is wanted. Yes. Therefore we are following leader. There is no doubt about it. But there is misleader. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanah.

Just like a blind man is leading other blind men. What is the use of such following leaders? He is blind and I am blind. So if he leads me to cross the road, what [is] my life? My life is in danger. So don't follow these misleaders. Krsna is approved leader. All leaders of the society, any part of the world, has accepted Krsna as the supreme leader. Follow Him. Then you'll be happy. Go on.

Sudama: "Visnu is the Lord of all living creatures, all worlds, and all beauties, and protector of everyone. The Lord created this material world for the conditioned souls to learn how to perform yajnas for the satisfaction of Visnu so that while in the material world they can live very comfortably without anxiety in life. Then after finishing the present material body they can enter into the kingdom of God. That is the whole program for the conditioned souls. By performance of yajna the conditioned souls gradually become Krsna conscious and become godly in all respects. In this age of Kali the sankirtana-yajna, or chanting the holy names of God, is recommended by the Vedic scriptures, and this transcendental system was introduced by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu for the deliverance of all men. Sankirtana-yajna and Krsna consciousness go well together. Lord Krsna in His devotional form as Lord Caitanya is worshiped in the Srimad-Bhagavatam as follows, with special reference to the sankirtana-yajna. ‘In this age of Kali people who are endowed with sufficient brain substance will worship the Lord who is accompanied by His associates, by performance of sankirtana-yajna.' "

Prabhupada: Yes. There is a verse, yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah [SB 11.5.32]. Those who are intelligent class of men in this age, they'll worship this form of the Lord. Who? Krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam. The Lord who is chanting always Krsna, but His body is not black. Fair-complexion. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Sangopangastra-parsadam. Followed by many devotees. Just like you'll see the Caitanya Mahaprabhu's picture. He is followed always by His associates and devotees. Sangopangastra-parsadam. Yajnaih san... This form of the Lord should be worshiped. Therefore we do not worship Krsna directly. Through Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, through sankirtana movement. That is the process prescribed in the sastra.

You cannot worship Krsna directly. Then you will misunderstand. Those who are not following the path of Caitanya's sankirtana movement, if they want to understand Krsna, they'll simply misrepresent Krsna's this rasa-lila in this way. That's all. Go on.

Sudama: "Although other yajnas prescribed in the Vedic literature are not easy to perform in this age of Kali, the sankirtana-yajna is the easiest and it is sublime for all purposes, as is recommended in the Bhagavad-gita."

Prabhupada: Yes. In the Bhagavad-gita also it is recommended, satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah [Bg. 9.14]. So this process, chanting of Hare Krsna mantra and gradually to develop Krsna consciousness, is the only means for, I mean to say, elevating yourself to the perfectional stage which is meant for this human life. Otherwise we are simply, what is called, cutting our own throat. That's all. Thank you. No more. (devotees offer obeisances) Any question?

Madhudvisa: Prabhupada? We read in the Bhagavad-gita today in verse number...

Prabhupada: Don't go outside today's lecture. You try to... Question means the lecture on which I was speaking. If there is any difficulty, that should be questioned. Otherwise, if you go outside, that present atmosphere created for this purpose, that will be lost. So question means on the subject matter which is already discussed. If there is any doubt or if there is any difficulty for understanding the subject matter which we have already discussed, that is the subject matter of question. Yes?

Woman devotee: I'm not sure if I heard you correctly. Did you say that Krsna could not be worshiped directly? Could not be?

Prabhupada: Krsna directly, yes. Through the process. Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He is Krsna Himself. So the sastra advises, instructs us, that those who are intelligent, intelligent. The word is used there, sumedhasa. Sumedhasa means those who have got nice brain substance. So Krsna, you can approach Krsna. There are so many ways you can approach Krsna. And in other words it is said, mama vartmanuvartante partha manusyah sarvasah. Krsna, our relationship is with Krsna, and that relationship cannot be cut off. That is there. Even those who are disobedient to Krsna, those who are atheists, godless or Krsna-less, they are also obeying Krsna's order. They are also.

Just like an outlaw who does not care to abide by the laws, he is also abiding the laws of the state in a different way. He is being forced. So those who are not in Krsna consciousness, he's being forced by maya to act. So that is there already, direct connection is there in this way or that way.

But here it is prescribed that anyone who wants the ultimate perfection of life they should worship Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna Himself. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is... Just like Rupa Gosvami worshiped Caitanya Mahaprabhu:

namo maha-vadanyaya
krsna-prema-pradaya te
krsnaya krsna-caitanya-
namne gaura-tvise namah
[Cc. Madhya 19.53]

He said that "My Lord, Caitanya Mahaprabhu, You are the most munificent incarnation because You are distributing love of Krsna. Therefore I offer You my respectful obeisances on account of Your distributing Krsna consciousness, and this is possible because You are Krsna Yourself." Krsnaya krsna-caitanya-namne. "Simply You have assumed the name of Krsna Caitanya." So these are the injunction of the sastras, and if you follow Caitanya Mahaprabhu...

And Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, gives you the easiest method. He says that "In this age simply chant Krsna and you'll get all perfection." So that is the easiest process. Therefore if you follow the footprints of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, then it become easier. Krsna says sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66] in the Bhagavad-gita. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says "All right. You cannot give up all of a sudden everything. You just join in this chanting." That is more magnanimous, you see.

We ask nobody that "You fulfill all conditions of Krsna consciousness; then you come here." No. We simply say "Please come here. We have taken this nice hall, and these boys, they are, I mean to say, giving their blood to maintain the establishment. We don't want anything from you. Please come and chant with us." That is our request. We don't ask you that because we are paying four hundred, five hundred dollars for this building, you give us something. If you give, it is welcome. But we simply request you, please come and chant with us and dance with us and take the prasada. That's all. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's program. Because we know that Caitanya Mahaprabhu will supply us everything. We don't depend on your contribution, but if you give, oh, that is good for you. But our only request is that please come here. Please chant with us, dance with us. That's all. Yes?

Visnujana: How will it be possible, Prabhupada, for a man whose mind is clouded to constantly chant Hare Krsna? A man who's always thinking thoughts about family, friends, country, nation?

Prabhupada: Yes. Think of. At the same time, chant. Two things will go on, and this will conquer. (chuckling) As maya is forcing you to drag you from this Krsna consciousness, you also force maya by chanting Hare Krsna. There is fight. And maya will go away.

daivi hy esa gunamayi
mama maya duratyaya
mam eva ye prapadyante
mayam etam taranti te
[Bg. 7.14]

This maya is very strong. She'll force you to entice you to other path. But if you do not stop, if you chant loudly...

Just like Haridasa Thakura was chanting, and maya could not victimize him. You know that? What was his stand? Simply chanting Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. Maya could not entice. Maya failed. Maya became his disciple. He did not become maya's disciple.

This is tug of war. So don't be afraid of maya. Simply enhance chanting and you'll be conqueror. That's all. Narayana-parah sarve na kutascana bibhyati [SB 6.17.28]. We are not afraid of maya because Krsna is there. Yes. Krsna says, kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati [Bg. 9.31]. You just declare, "My devotee will never be vanquished by maya." Maya cannot do anything. Simply you have to become strong. And what is that strength? Chant Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, loudly. Yes.

Woman devotee: What is maya? I know that it's attractive...

Prabhupada: Maya means which drags you from Krsna. That is maya.

Woman devotee: Is it a spiritual form?

Prabhupada: Whatever form may be, [it is] force. We shall see form later on. You just... Just like a police sends a warrant, arrest. You do not ask what is the form of the police, but here is warrant, you have to go. Force, that's all. Similarly, don't try to understand what is maya's form, but you just feel her force, how she is acting. How she is putting you in difficulty. You see? There are so many things. Maya puts into this difficulty and you are encumbered. That we have to understand, how I have become encumbered. In my childhood I was free. There was no encumbrances. Now I am encumbered. I am harassed. This is maya's action. So if you want to get out of this maya's influence, then you have to become Krsna consciousness. There is no other alternative. Chant Hare Krsna. (kirtana) (end)
