Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: Param Brahman. We are all Brahmans. Aham brahmasmi. Every one of us, living entity, Brahman. But He is the chief Brahman. Just like you are all Americans, but your president is the chief American. Do you understand? So similarly, Krsna is the chief Brahman. You are all Brahman, but He is the chief Brahman. Is it clear? That's all right. [Break] ...that "This boy hears very nicely. He does not go away," the first impression he gave to other godbrothers. "So I shall make him disciple." These very words he said. Actually I did not follow him in the beginning. High philosophical speaking and I was a new boy. I could not follow him, but actually I was so much glad to hear him. That's all. So that was my qualification, whatever you may say. I was simply asking, "When Guru Maharaja will speak? When he will speak? When?" And I will sit down and go on hearing, and I will understand or not understand-others will disperse -- I will not disperse. That he marked. Yes. First. There was first one instance. At that time I was not initiated. There was a circumambulation of whole Vrndavana. So although I was not initiated, I was one of the important members of the... So I thought, "Let me go. What these people are doing, circumambulating all over Vrndavana?" So I went to Mathura. Then I went to the Vrndavana interior, which place was known as Kosi. So in that Kosi one of my godbrothers declared that "Prabhupada is going tomorrow back to Mathura. So he will speak this evening. So anyone who wants to hear him, they can stay. And others may prepare to..." Sit down.Pradyumna: Two people just came.
Prabhupada: Oh. All right.
Pradyumna: Can the boys downstairs bring them?
Prabhupada: Yes. So they were to go to see some other temple which is called Sesayi Temple. So although I was new man, I did not like to go to see the Sesayi Temple. I decided that "I shall hear." So at that time I was new, so all other, some of my important godbrothers, they were sitting like this, and I was sitting. At last, you see. But he knew that "This boy is new." Everyone has gone, all others except a few selected godbrothers. So he marked it that "This boy is interested to hear me." So hearing is very important. Hearing. Just like Arjuna heard from Krsna. Come on. (People entering) [Break] ...because I was serious for hearing, and therefore now I am serious about kirtanam, means speaking, or preaching. Do you follow what I say? Yes. So one who is serious about hearing, he can become a future nice preacher. Sravanam kirtanam. Next stage is developed. That is development. If one has actually heard nicely, then he will speak nicely. Sravanam kirtanam smaranam. Then consciousness will automatically develop because when you speak or you hear, unless your mind is concentrated, your consciousness is right, you cannot rightly hear or speak. Sravanam kirtanam smaranam pada-sevanam. And then the development, "How I shall serve Krsna? Krsna is so loving. Krsna is so great," that automatically comes. Not silent, but activity. Pada-sevanam means that activity begins immediately. In this way last item is sarvatma-snapanam. Sarvatma, atma-samarpanam, sarvatma-samarpanam. Bali Maharaja just like. Giving, giving, giving, giving, giving, giving. Then, when Vamanadeva asked, "Now, Bali Maharaja, you have lost everything. Still I have got another leg, another foot, to place." "Yes. There is one thing. It is my head. Come on." So everything is there, and Lord Vamanadeva: "Yes. You have now purchased Me. You have now purchased Me. So I shall remain your doorman here, standing always to give you protection." So Krsna became purchased by him, and He remained his doorman. Just see His mercy. Dvara. Dvari. Dvari means doorman. So by serving Krsna, nobody is loser; he is gainer. He is gainer permanently, eternally. We do not know what is the value of that gain now. Because we are materially covered, we think service means just like service in this world. This service is maya. Nobody will be satisfied, nobody. You cannot satisfy, neither you will be satisfied. The best example is in your country, that your president, Mr. Kennedy, he gave you the best service, and the result was that you killed him. You or some of your member killed him. That means his service was not appreciated, although he gave his best service. So similarly, in the material world, whatever service you render, that is spoiling time. But you render service to Krsna -- you will be satisfied, Krsna will be satisfied, and as Krsna will be satisfied, everyone will be satisfied. So take to this Krsna consciousness service by hearing, by speaking, by remembering, by giving actually service, by worshiping, by making friendship, and after all, everything for Krsna. That is perfection. Now these new boys have come. Let them question and I shall answer. That will be nice. You have heard something about Krsna consciousness? So wherefrom these men ...? (indistinct)
Pradyumna: Bhurijana sent them. Bhurijana sent money for tickets to go to Columbus.
Prabhupada: He has sent the tickets?
Pradyumna: Money.
Prabhupada: Hm. So engage all yourselves in the service of Krsna. It is very pleasing, and what is called encouraging, enlivening. After too much material enjoyment, the next stage is frustration. That stage is coming to your country. Therefore the boys are becoming hippies. After too much material enjoyment, the next stage is -- that is natural-frustration. There is a good example in our country, one Mr. C.R. Das. He was a great leader, next to Gandhi, important political leader. So he was on the topmost of... He was lawyer, barrister. He was earning fifty thousand dollars monthly, very rich man. And he was making charity, and he was spending like thing (anything). He was drunkard number one, woman-hunter number one, and everything. Because he had money he could enjoy everything. But he was not happy. So one day he was sitting with his wife. Just like in the street, he was looking over. So his wife asked him -- his name was Chittaranjan -- "Chittaranjan, you are earning so much. You are spending. People are very much fond of you. You are a great leader. Why you always remain morose? What do you want to be? You have got now everything." So at that time one mendicant, a sannyasi was passing. So Chittaranjan said, "I want to be like him. Then I will be happy. I don't want to enjoy. I want to beggar, to be beggar-like." You see? So that time is coming to your country. So these hippies, they are frustrating. They have given up everything. We can study their psychic movement. They are not satisfied. That is the main principle. That is natural, to accept adversity voluntarily, adversity. So this is frustration. But before reaching to that point of frustration, if you take to Krsna consciousness, then you reach the real standard of happiness because everything belongs to Krsna. I shall give you another example. Suppose you have stolen something from somebody's house or some friends. You will not be happy, even possessing that thing, stolen property. But if someday you come to return that thing to that friend, you will be happy. What do you think, Hayagriva?
Hayagriva: Yes.
Prabhupada: Yes. Then you will feel relieved. So therefore the real thing is that everything belongs to Krsna. We are artificially enjoying the stolen property. Therefore if you go on enjoying like that, then this frustration will come. But before coming to that frustration, if we return this property to Krsna, then we become happy. So best thing is to return everything to Krsna. This is Krsna consciousness. And you will not be a loser. You will be gainer, just like Bali Maharaja. Actually, if you think, everything belongs to Krsna. Nothing belongs to you. This is maya. Krsna's property you are thinking, "mine." Is this land of American belongs to you actually? It is stolen property. You have stolen from the Red Indians or from Krsna. Everyone is, not you, everyone. Somebody is claiming, "This much my property," somebody is claiming, "This much my property," but this much or that much, everything belongs to Krsna. It is stolen property. There is another example in Indian words, that hira cauri kiya abhicaurya, khira cauri kiya abhicaura. Hira means diamond, and khira means... What is that called? Cucumber, a small? So if somebody has stolen a cucumber from other's tree, so he is captured. And another man has stolen some diamond. He is also arrested. So from the police, both are thieves. If the man says, "Oh, what I have stolen? I have stolen a little cucumber. It is nothing, worth not even two cent or one cent. Why you are arresting me? He is thief. He has stolen a big diamond," no, in the eyes of law, he is also thief; he is also thief. Everyone is thief. Anyone who is not in Krsna consciousness, he is thief. He'll not be happy. The best thing is to return whatever he has possessed: "Krsna, it is Yours. Take." Finish business. Manasa deha geha, yo kichu mora. Bhaktivinoda Thakura's song... Now, everything we possess in mind. Actually we don't possess. Suppose I am possessing all this. As soon as I go from this body, all possession will remain here. I'll not take anything. So I don't possess. But in mind I am thinking, "Oh, this is mine. This is mine. Where is another box? Why it is not coming?" And possessing in mind. If I leave this body, either the box here or in the Chicago or anywhere else, what is the difference? There is no difference. But because I am possessing in the mind, "Oh, that box is mine," so I am asking, "Whether it is Chicago or it is here, it is there? Why it is not coming?" So possession in the mind. Actually you don't possess. Manasa deha geha. So by that supposingly possessing, we have got our mind, we have got our body, then expansion of body, wife, children, family, society, country. In this way we possess so many things. Bhaktivinoda Thakura says, manasa deha geha, yo kichu mora: "Now whatever I possess, either in the mind or in the family or in the society or in the body -- whatever I have got, I surrender unto You, my dear Krsna." Manasa deha geha, yo kichu..., arpilun tua pade nanda kisora: "Nanda-kisora, O the son of Nanda, I give unto You." Marobi rakhobi, yo iccha tohara: "Now whatever You like, You can do, either you kill me or You protect me, as You like. You are the proprietor. You have right to do everything." This is surrender. This is full Krsna consciousness. That is not possible immediately. Therefore we have to practice. Sada tad-bhava-bhavitah [Bg. 8.6]. And if we die in that Krsna consciousness, yam yam vapi smaran loke tyajaty ante kalevaram... In the particular type of consciousness, when one gives up this body, then he is transferred into that position next life. So in this way, Krsna consciousness, if we are able, sada tad-bhava-bhavitah, by practicing always, constantly, that situation of consciousness, then next life, after giving up... Why next life? This life also. One person who is in always Krsna's service this life or that life, he is with Krsna. He is with Krsna. Any person who is in Krsna consciousness is always with Krsna. Krsna is everywhere. I may not understand, but Krsna is everywhere. So you American boys and girls, you should take to this Krsna consciousness. You'll be happy. Your position is to take up because you are on the top of the material happiness. Now you take it. You be saved. Otherwise this frustration is coming. That will come. Just like C.R. Das. He, out of that frustration, he gave up everything. He sacrificed his life for political. And what is the value of that sacrifice? You may become a great man of your country in the estimation of your people, but not in the estimation of Krsna. You may become a great man in the estimation of your country, but in others' estimation, your enemy, "Oh, this man is dead. Now our enemy is finished. That's nice." So another side there is imperfection. Not everybody is satisfied by your service. But if you serve Krsna, everybody is satisfied. If you chant Hare Krsna and dance, nobody will be dissatisfied. At least they will say, "Ah..." Just like in the paper, "The boys are very nice." You see? You have seen. Instead of not very sympathetic, they have remarked this, "Oh, these boys are very nice." At least, people will appreciate, "Oh, these boys are... These Krsna conscious men are very nice. They do not smoke. They do not drink. They have no illicit sex life. They do not kill for satisfy the tongue. They are satisfied with natural food. And their behavior is very good." Who will deny it? And the other asset they cannot estimate, that how much he is in contact with Krsna, the Supreme. That, they have no estimating power, but at least they will appreciate these external features. One clergyman, when I was going to Hawaii, he was talking with me. He said, "Swamiji, I have seen your disciples have a very nice face, glowing face." And "Yes, certainly. They must be. They are making spiritual progress." So it is not difficult. It is very easy. If you take to this, you have everything sublime and your life becomes sublime. You haven't got to give up anything. The material needs are there, eating, sleeping, mating and defending. That is not disallowed, but adjusted for Krsna consciousness. We cannot allow eating, mating, like animals, cats and dogs. No. That is not possible. You'll eat, you'll mate, but just like human being, civilized man. Then what is the distinction between animal and man if we behave like animals? Krsna, God, is pure. So if you keep yourself in impure condition of life, then how you can make progress towards purity, highest perfection, purity? Param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan [Bg. 10.12]. In the Tenth Chapter of Bhagavad-gita Arjuna is accepting Krsna that "You are the purest of all." If you are going to reach the purest of all, how you can remain impure? This tapasya... This voluntary restraint means tapasya. Tapasya, there is a Sanskrit word, tapasya. Tapasya means voluntarily restraining or accepting some suffering condition. That is not actually suffering condition. Just like a patient. A doctor says, "You cannot take it." So he has the desire to take it, but doctor says that "you cannot take it." Therefore he mentally thinks that "Doctor has restricted this. I am suffering." Actually he is curing, but he thinks that "I am suffering." And when he's cured, he sees, "Oh, doctor is good friend. He told me not to indulge in this. Now I have done it. I am now cured." So tapasya means voluntarily one has to accept some so-called suffering. That is required to make advancement in Krsna consciousness, voluntarily acceptance, some so-called suffering. Tapah divyam. That suffering is for transcendental realization. That is good. Tapo divyam yena sattvam suddhyet [SB 5.5.1]. Suddhyet means your existence will be purified. And existence purified means you advance to realize unlimited happiness. What is the disease? Disease means there is limitation of eating, limitation of sleeping. Everything is limited. Limitation of mating. A diseased man cannot have sex life unlimitedly or whatever. There is restriction. A tuberculosis person is completely restricted, "You cannot have sex life." That restriction is for curing him. And the cure means he enjoys -- whatever he thinks enjoyment, that is unlimited. Yasmad brahma-saukhyam anantam [SB 5.5.1]. Brahma-saukhyam, eternal happiness, unending happiness. So for acquiring unending, eternal happiness, if you have to accept some voluntary suffering in this life, everyone should do that. So if you ask... You can ask some questions. Adau gurvasrayam sad-dharma-prcchat. If you go to a person, superior, or spiritual master, then you should ask. You should be inquisitive for better understanding. Sad-dharma-prcchat. Jijnasu. Jijnasu means inquisitive, jijnasuh sreya uttamam, inquisitive for higher, happy life. Inquisitiveness. So what is your inquisitiveness?
Guest (1): Would you say something about Christ and his relation to Krsna consciousness? Christ? Jesus Christ?
Prabhupada: Christ is Krsna conscious. That's all. You become like Christ, Krsna conscious. Don't you understand Christ, that he is fully Krsna conscious? You don't understand it? Then you become like Christ, fully Krsna conscious.
Madhumangala: What does Madhumangala mean?
Prabhupada: That is not very good question.
Madhumangala: (indistinct)...told me to ask.
Prabhupada: Madhumangala, you have explained when I initiated. Madhumangala was one of the friend of Krsna. That's all.
Guest (2): What was Arjuna's relation to Krsna, I mean, as concise as you can put it?
Prabhupada: Hm?
Kirtanananda: What was Arjuna's relationship to Krsna?
Prabhupada: Friendship. That is also... There are five kinds of relationship. Just like "God is great." That is simply feeling the greatness of God. Then, when he feels exactly how God is great, then naturally there will be an inclination to serve God. That is called servitude. First neutrality estimation... That is called santa-rasa, neutral, no activity but simply appreciating, "God is great," simply appreciation. And then servitude. When the appreciation is complete, "Oh, why not serve God? He is so great. He is giving us so many things. Let me return something. Let me do some service of Him." Servitude. That is further development of the appreciation of the greatness of God. And then further development is friendship. Friendship means... Service means I ask you, "Please give me a glass of water." You give me. And friendship means you are thinking, "How my friend will be... Now he may be wanting a glass of water." So before asking me, if you give me, "I think you may require a glass of water," that is friendship. Friendship means feeling friend's welfare always. Suhrt. Friendship is not simply chatting. Friendship means thinking, "How my friend will be happy?" This is friendship. Then that friendship, when further developed, that is parenthood. Just like parents, they have no other consideration. They want to see, "How my child will be happy always?" And further development is conjugal love, just like man and woman, male and female, that love. That love includes everything -- that appreciation of greatness, that servitude of service, the friendship, then maternal love, and further, offering everything for the lover. That is most perfectional stage of love. So in this way we have got five kinds of direct relationship, and there are seven kinds of indirect relationship. That is not on the platform of love. That is on the platform of enmity. Just like Kamsa. Kamsa was thinking of Krsna as enemy, so he was also Krsna conscious. He was thinking of how to kill Krsna. So that is also Krsna consciousness, but indirectly. So there are, indirect, seven rasas: ghastly, inimical, and sometimes seeing Krsna, one laughs, derided... In so many ways there are many indirect... Without relationship nobody can remain. The seven kinds of relationship are indirect. And five kinds of relationship is direct. So we want to be situated in the direct relationship.
Kirtanananda: All of the conditioned souls are in an indirect relationship.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Kirtanananda: Everyone is in a relationship.
Prabhupada: Yes. There must be some relation. Without relationship one cannot exist because he is part and parcel. Just like persons in the prison house. They are not out of government. There is relationship with the government, but that is indirect. The criminals, they do not appreciate the service of the government. Government is bothered about his existence. Some extra... Instead of receiving some service from him to the state, the state has got to spend unnecessarily for him. That is a botheration. So those who are in indirect relationship with Krsna, they are botheration. They are simply giving trouble to Krsna, but there is relationship.
Hayagriva: Is the humorous direct or indirect? One in humor?
Prabhupada: Humor, humor is practically in every direct relationship. And indirect also, there is humor. "I am thinking of you as enemy" -- that is also another type of humor. (Chuckles) Yes.
Pradyumna: Do the five direct rasas take place between jiva souls also when they are...
Prabhupada: Everything for jiva souls, all relationship. Krsna is one, the Supreme, and all the jiva souls are part and parcel of Krsna. Therefore the eternal relationship is there. Now they are exhibited in these twelve kinds of humor, either directly or indirectly. Jiva soul, a part and parcel, cannot be separated from the Supreme. Sun and the light, electric bulb, and the diffusion of light, they cannot be separated. But this portion is covered. It appears darkness. So when it is covered, that is called maya, and he thinks that "I have no relationship with God," or "I am God," "There is no God." This is maya. He is covered. He cannot see. So he has to be treated by this Krsna consciousness treatment, and the maya will be separated, and he will see, "Ah, yes, I am part and parcel of Krsna." Then he comes to the direct relationship. Anyone, so-called spiritualist or transcendentalist, if he is claiming that "There is no God," "I am God," "There is voidness," these are all disturbing positions, different symptoms of this disease of maya. It is disease. How one can think of, that he is God? That means he does not know what is God. If I say here that "I am President Nixon," would you accept it? Would you accept? Any one of you, if I say that "I am President Nixon," will you accept? Why? Why? Why? Why you do not accept me? I say, "I am President Nixon." Why do you not accept? Why?
Woman: I would say you are if you say you are.
Kirtanananda: You don't have the characteristics.
Prabhupada: No. That means you are not rascal. You are sane, that you do not accept me as President... That is one thing. At least you are not insane. So if I say, "God," and you accept, then how much insane you are. Just try to understand. How much insanity is there, one who is claiming that "I am God" and one who is accepting that he is God. This is insanity.
Woman: Are we not all one?
Prabhupada: One is... That is different thing. You are not one with President Nixon?
Woman: Yes.
Prabhupada: Then are you President Nixon?
Woman: He's a human being. He's part of me.
Prabhupada: That's all right. He is American. He is human being. In so many qualities you are one. But you cannot claim for that, you are President Nixon. You should understand in that way. In so many respect, qualities, you are one with God, but that does not mean you are God. God is one. That means you have no complete understanding. Just like in spite of your becoming American or human being, you deny to identify yourself with President Nixon because you have full knowledge of President Nixon and yourself. And as soon as you say, "I am God," that means you have no full knowledge of God. You are insane. You do not know what is God. That very thing immediately asserts that you are unknown factor about God. God is said, "Great," but you are claiming that greatness. That means you do not know how great He is. A tiny factor, you are claiming that "I am God," without having that greatness. That means insane, insanity. The same way: if you claim that "I am President Nixon," that is insanity. Similarly, God is, how great He is, how much greater than President Nixon. You deny to become one with President Nixon, and you accept to be one with God? How much insane you are. Just try to understand. Yes?
Child: How many arms does Lord Nrsimhadeva have?
Prabhupada: That you shall know later on. Not now.
Janardana: I've read in Bhagavad-gita that he who knows the self does not do action nor causes action to be done. So what is the soul's, the spirit soul's, relationship to actions performed both in material consciousness and in spiritual, in Krsna consciousness?
Prabhupada: Material consciousness means forgetting God. When one forgets God, that is material consciousness. Material consciousness is called maya. Actually one should not forget. But if he forgets somehow or other, that is material consciousness. Naturally nobody forgets his father and mother. But if, somehow or other, he forgets, that is a special circumstances and that is called maya, illusion. Just like any one of you who are existing, you must have a father and mother. That is a fact. Without father and mother, your existence cannot be. Now, if you cannot say who is your father and mother, if you do not know, this forgetfulness, this is called maya. Actually it should not happen, but somehow or other, if you are asked, "Who is your parents?" You cannot say. This is called maya. But there must be some father and mother. Without father and mother, there cannot be an existence. You cannot deny that. You cannot say, "Oh, I have no father and mother." That is not possible. You may not know who is your father, mother. That is a different thing. But you cannot say, "Oh, I have no father, mother." So this denial, that "I don't believe in God," is a existence like that, one who has forgotten his father and mother. That is maya, and that is material consciousness. Denying God in different way, "There is no God," that is also denial. "I don't believe in God" -- that is also denial. "God is impersonal, void," anyway, whatever you say in that way, that is all insanity, maya. Maya means insanity. Another meaning of maya means insanity. Just like when a man becomes insane, that is false. It is expected that he should not be insane. By treatment he is brought again to his original consciousness. Similarly, maya means insanity, forgetfulness of God. And by Krsna consciousness treatment he comes to the original consciousness. He becomes a cured man. Actually maya means which has no existence. Maya has no existence. But sometimes it is there. Just like the sky's cover. This covering is not reality. The reality is this sky, clear sky, but somehow it is now covered. You cannot see the clear sky. So there is temporary, temporary illusion. Now, if I see the cloud only and if I say, "Oh, there is no sun. There is no illumination," or "There is no clear sky," that is insanity. Because I cannot see-under certain circumstances, I deny it -- that is my insanity. Therefore you have to approach to a man who knows that there is sunlight, there is sun, there is clear sky... If you go there... You require all this education, knowledge. By knowledge one transcends maya, or material existence. What is the difference between ordinary man and Krsna conscious man? They are also living in this world, in this apartment. Everything is being utilized like others. We are also eating, sleeping also. But what is the difference? Our difference -- that we accept that everything belongs to Krsna; others do not. That's all. That is maya. Everything actually belongs to Krsna. He does not know. He thinks, "It belongs to me," or "This, my nation, this, my country, this, that," so many things. He is manufacturing. And we know the simple truth, that everything belongs to Krsna. So let everything be offered to Krsna. That's all. Yes.
Kirtanananda: So we understand that in the material consciousness the living entity is being forced to act.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Kirtanananda: His actions are quite automatic under the laws of material nature.
Prabhupada: Yes. No, action is there. Because you are living entity, you are active.
Kirtanananda: Yes, but they are being dictated.
Prabhupada: Yes. Just like a man in fever talking nonsense. So that is due to fever.
Kirtanananda: In Krsna consciousness, are the actions of the jiva similarly controlled by Krsna's superior energy?
Prabhupada: Yes, certainly.
Kirtanananda: But everything is being controlled ultimately by Krsna.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Kirtanananda: Either by inferior energy or superior energy.
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes.
Kirtanananda: So his activities are never independent, either in Krsna or...
Prabhupada: Never, never, never. That is his insanity, another. As soon as he thinks that "I am independent," that is another insanity. He is under control. Just like the same man. He is thinking, "I don't care for state laws." He is insane. He will be forced to accept state laws in the prison house by the police. But he thinks, "Oh, I am free man." Still... He is slapped by the police. He says, "Oh, I am independent. Go on slapping." This is insanity. Is it not insanity? The police slaps him, and he says, "I am independent." Do you think independence? So that sort of independence we are having. We are kicked by maya always, and we are thinking, "independent." This is insanity. He does not think, "Why I am independent? I am servant of my senses. I cannot remain, enjoying senses, for an hour, and I am thinking I am independent." That means insane. He cannot think properly. Where is his independence? Cannot be independent. He is born dependent because part and parcel of God. His constitutional position is dependent. Just like child. A child declares independence. What is the meaning of that independence? Danger. That's all. Simply inviting dangers. A child wants: "Oh, I don't care for my parents. I shall cross the road. I shall go everywhere." So if he is allowed to do that, that means he is simply inviting dangers. And if he remains under the protection of the parents, he is always safe. So this living entity's declaring independence means he is insane, different kinds of insanity. He cannot be independent. Let him think very deeply that it cannot be independent. He is thinking independent of God, but he is dependent on his sense pleasure. That's all. And some intoxication, a voluntarily accept dependence of something maya. That's all. Who is independent. Is there anyone independent? Nobody is independent. To think of independence is maya. Best thing is that "I am dependent, and let me remain dependent in properly. Then I am protected." That is Krsna consciousness. So your question is answered? Material consciousness means thinking falsely independent. That is material consciousness. Falsely. He is not independent, but he is thinking falsely, "I am independent." This is maya. Just like in dream he is falsely thinking there is a tiger. There is no tiger, but he is actuated by this false impression, "Oh, tiger is eating me. It has attacked me. Save me." So this material existence means because he is insane, he is thinking there are so many problems, "The tiger is there. He is attacking me. This, that, so many enemies, friends...," creating so many things. But they are all false. But he is attacked by that false hallucination. That's all. This is maya. Everyone is thinking, "Oh, there are so many problems I have to solve. I have to make this, that, this, so many." But he has no problem. He has no problem. His only problem is how to accept Krsna. That's all. And Krsna is so kind. He says, "Yes, you accept Me. Simply chant Krsna. I am yours. That's all." But my, I am so misfortunate that I cannot chant even. All problems solved simply by chanting Krsna. Etadrsi tava krpa bhagavan. Caitanya Mahaprabhu teaches that "O Krsna, You are so kind that You have come to Me in the sound vibration, word, 'Krsna.' I can very easily chant, and You remain with Me. But I am so misfortunate that I have no attraction even for this." You say people, "You chant Krsna; you get everything." They will not believe it. If you say, "You press your nose. You pay me fifty dollars. I'll give you some nice mantra and this, that. You make your head like this, leg like this," "Oh," he'll say, "here is something." Something. "And this Swamiji says, 'Simply chant Krsna.' Oh, what is this?" Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, etadrsi tava krpa bhagavan mamapi durdaiva: "But I am so unfortunate that You have become so easily available in this age, but I am so unfortunate, I cannot accept it." So the Krsna consciousness so easily being distributed, but they are so unfortunate, they cannot accept. Just see. And you give them bluff, you cheat them -- they will, "Ah, yes, welcome. Yes." They'll welcome it. And cheaters are always ready: "Oh, there are so many customers for being cheated. Let me take advantage of it." So my Guru Maharaja used to say, "This world is the society of cheaters and cheated." The members are somebody are cheating, and somebody are cheated. The association of cheaters and cheated. So we want to save them from this society of cheaters and cheated.
Janardana: Prabhupada, often when we'll be performing, doing some activity during our day, and so many things will go wrong, and we become frustrated...
Prabhupada: Well, when one is a professional, there may be something wrong. That doesn't matter. But you try to discharge your duties, rightly, whatever you are prescribed to do. Then everything will come to the right point. Your only business is to follow the four principles of regulative life and chant Hare Krsna sixteen rounds. So there may be sometimes mistake. That will be corrected automatically. Because we are coming from a different platform, so it may be. And that is also said in the Bha... Api cet su-duracaro bhajate mam ananya-bhak, sadhur eva sa mantavyah: [Bg. 9.30] "If one is found doing mistake or doing something wrong, but because he is sticking to this principle of Krsna consciousness, he is sadhu." Sadhu means a holy man. He is holy. He is not doing any wrong consciously. But due to habit... Suppose just like most of you were, in your former life, you were smoking or taking intoxication. But by some influence, if you sometimes take to it, yes, if you are conscious, "Oh, I have done wrong," but that is excused if you have done unconscious. But if you think that "Now I am Krsna conscious. Whatever I do, it is right," then it is great sin. But accidentally it happens -- that is excused. Never mind. So accidental mistake is not dangerous. Willful mistake is dangerous. That we should be careful. We should be very careful always so that accidental mistakes also may not take place. But if it takes place, it is excused.
Devotee: Can hatha-yoga hinder or help Krsna consciousness, or is it...?
Prabhupada: Hinder. Yes. Because it is useless, simply wasting time. You cannot perform hatha-yoga in this age. You do not follow the rules and regulations. You are simply bluffed. Do you know what is the rules and regulations of hatha-yoga factually?
Devotee: Not actually.
Prabhupada: Yes. You have to select a secluded place. Hatha-yoga is not practiced in assembly of so many men. Just you go to a hatha-yoga class. There are hundreds of members practicing, and he is collecting money, five dollars per seat. And you are thinking, "I am practicing." That is useless waste of time and money. Hatha-yoga is not practiced in that way. You have to practice in a secluded place, alone. Do you do that?
Devotee: Yes. Not... No. I guess I don't.
Prabhupada: It is very difficult in this age. Then you have to restrain yourself in so many things. Complete free from sex life. You have to eat under certain direction, you have to... So many things there are. These rules are not followed. Simply they have got some bodily gymnastic sitting posture. They are thinking, "I am practicing." No. That is one of the items. So all the items cannot be observed in this age. Therefore it is wasting. [ "...yogis, he who always abides in Me with great faith, worshiping Me in transcendental loving service is most intimately united with Me in yoga and is the highest of all." This is the goal of yoga practice. So that is possible very easily by this movement, Krsna consciousness, not by any other process. And the ultimate goal is here. One should be always abiding with God, worshiping Him, transcendental loving service, and intimately united with Him, intimately. This intimate unity means that five kinds of relationship. That is the perfection of yoga. When Krsna has advised yoga practice, sankhya-yoga... You have Bhagavad-gita? There is sankhya-yoga. You'll find in the forty-seventh verse. This is the version.
Devotee: There's no value in keeping the body fit through exercise?
Prabhupada: Yes, you can become very healthy. But does it mean that health is the perfection of life? Do you mean to say healthy life will not die, will not change his body? So health is required, but health is not the ultimate goal of life. Ultimate goal of life is here.
Guest (3): Buddha taught very similar things to what the Gita taught also, didn't he? Are there agreeances there, agreement in certain places what Buddha taught and what the Gita teaches?
Prabhupada: Do you follow this Buddha?
Guest (3): Uh, no.
Prabhupada: You simply talk of him? You practice Buddha if you appreciate him. You give up everything like Buddha and meditate. But that you will not do. Then what is the talking of, useless talking about this? Do something. Either you believe Buddha or Jesus Christ or Krsna. Do something. Don't talk simply. Lord Buddha is very nice. He gave up his kingdom in youthful life. He was prince. He thought, "It is all nonsense. Let me meditate." Do like that. That is the disease. We won't do anything. We talk much of this, that, this, that. Do anything, but do it perfectly. "Jack of all trade, master of none." That is not good. Be master of something. It doesn't differ. Either you follow Lord Jesus Christ or Lord Buddha or Krsna, it doesn't matter much. But do it perfectly. That is our request. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: ...these are all misconceptions because I am not this body. I am spirit soul. When the spirit soul goes away, then where is the distinction? Suppose in hospital some Hindu dies or some Muslim dies, some Christian die, the spirit... They are stacked together as useless matter. Is it not? There is no distinction there now, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, white, black. Now it is dead body, put aside. Eh? So, but when living, when the spirit soul is there, they are dividing, this designation. So this knowledge that so long the spirit soul is there in the body, it is important. As soon as the soul is gone, it is useless. But people are giving more stress on the body than on the active principle, living force, what is there. There is no study. Suppose you are all scientists. What is your studying about that living force that is moving the body?Dr. Muncing: I would agree with you that the body, when a person dies, it's material and dead in the terms we use and the spirit moves on. And I accept from that that at that stage one has nothing to..., one has no worry about the body. But in the stage that we are now, where our body and our soul are together, it seems to me that this is one unity and you can't use the argument that at that stage you should neglect the body.
Prabhupada: No, we don't say neglect the body. But the important factor... Just like our, this Svarupa Damodara has explained that behind this material combination, there is an active principle which is soul. That is the important thing. But in the modern age they are giving more stress on the unimportant thing, and they have no knowledge of the important thing. This is the defect.
Dr. Muncing: I think I disagree with that.
Dr. Harrap: I'm a little uncertain from reading some of your comments about the primary aim that you would set for science. I would place a great deal of emphasis on the contribution that science can make to the community.
Prabhupada: That I admit. That I admit. Yes.
Dr. Muncing: With respect, sir, I notice you wear a watch. This must be obviously a product of science, and this is what it's about. But you are stressing time and again in your writings the need to concentrate on the laws that you set out in order to achieve some standing in the future, in the life hereafter. Isn't this at the risk of neglecting the people who are sharing this life with us here and now?
Prabhupada: No, it is not the question of neglecting. Just like formerly there was no watch, but still they used to keep time by the movement of the sun on a dial, just making some marks on the stone. Do you know this?
Guests: Yes, yes, I know.
Prabhupada: Yes. So their work was going on. Their work was not suffering for want of this watch.
Dr. Muncing: I agree.
Prabhupada: Yes. So we have got good brain. Instead of utilizing the brain to know what is the active principles of this whole universe, if we utilize that brain for manufacturing a watch, that is not very good proposal. You manufacture watch, but at the same time, you try to study the active principle, who is the watchmaker. I am seeing the watch with the eyes, but as soon as the active principle is gone, no more seeing. Where is that science? A watchmaker is making, screw-driving, and doing so many things. All of a sudden his heart fails. No more watch. What is that active principle? Where is that science? That is my proposition?
Dr. Muncing: It wasn't the manufacturing aspect. It was the creative aspect that I was concerned with, that there is a creative faculty in man that can be used to benefit the rest of mankind. Isn't there a tendency...
Prabhupada: Creative faculty... Therefore we first of all give stress, the creative faculty, that the watchmaker is doing nice work, but who has made that watchmaker? Who is that creative faculty? You are a scientist, you have good brain, but you cannot manufacture the brain. But who has manufactured your brain?
Guest (2): But isn't it the use to which the brain is put that is the...
Prabhupada: If you are scientist, you create a similar brain like you. That you cannot do. But somebody has created your brain. And who is that person? Professor Einstein, big scientist, but he could not create another Professor Einstein so that after his death the work would continue. Because the brain creator, the brain of scientist created by somebody, that is not in your hand. You cannot create another similar brain. That is not possible. But if you are surprised with the mechanical arrangement of the small watch, why you should not study the mechanical arrangement of a great scientist? But as the mechanical arrangement of the watch is made by some brain, similarly, your brain or Professor Einstein's brain, that is also made by another scientist. And who is that scientist? We are glorifying the brain of the scientist but we are not glorifying the scientist who has made the brain of the scientist.
Dr. Muncing: If we weren't being recorded I would make a comment but we are, so I won't. (laughter) Sir, could we move from the metaphysical to the material for a brief moment? We were not certain from reading your book whether it would be acceptable, but Dr. Harrap has a special sample of cheese which we wondered if we might present.
Dr. Harrap: This is cheese that has been made in the C.S.R.O. from cow's milk, and I hope that perhaps you might enjoy it.
Prabhupada: Oh, thank you very much. So you can give some cheese preparation to all these respectable scientists. You have got that sweet, sweet ball?
Satsvarupa: Where are they? I could not find them just now.
Prabhupada: You go and find out.
Dr. Harrap: This is a variety of cheese that, what we call a gouda cheese which comes originally from Holland. But it is very much liked in Asian countries and Australia has quite a large export market to many of the Asian countries, and more particularly to Japan. It seems to appeal very much to the taste of cheese-loving people in these countries, and this is a product which is becoming more and more popular in these countries.
Prabhupada: From milk you can prepare hundreds and thousands of preparations.
Dr. Harrap: Oh, yes. Yes. Even in cheeses there are probably hundreds of varieties.
Prabhupada: Yes, yes. We make. We actually make. At least ten, twenty kinds of sweet preparation we make from the cheese. Therefore our, as recommended in the Bhagavad-gita, krsi-go-raksya-vanijyam [Bg. 18.44]. Krsi-go-raksya. People... A class of men should be trained up for agriculture, producing food grain, and cow protection. Cow protection means you get the milk, sufficient quantity, and from milk you get so many nutritious, full of vitamin food.
Dr. Harrap: It's a complete food in itself.
Prabhupada: Yes. Those who are meat-eaters, they can eat other non-important animals, but cows must be saved, even from economic point of view. Here it is said that go-raksya. It does not say, Krsna, "elephant-raksya." Elephant is a big animal, and at least fifty times more than cow, there is flesh. But it is not recommended. But the cow protection is recommended because it has got the miracle food, milk, and from milk you can prepare hundreds of preparation, all nutritious, full of vitamin A and D. So therefore it is recommended, go-raksya. It is not that meat-eating is stopped. Meat-eaters may kill other non-important animals but don't kill animal, er, cow. And besides that, from moral point of view, we are drinking milk from the cow, so she is mother. According to Vedic understanding there are seven kinds of mother: adau mata, real mother. Adau mata, guru patni, the wife of guru, spiritual master. Adau mata, guru patni, brahmani, the wife of a brahmana. Brahmana means the most intelligent class of men in the society. Who are brahmana, that is also mentioned there in the sastra. So his wife. Adau mata, guru patni... In general the understanding is, except your wife all woman is your mother. That is the instruction of Canakya Pandita. Matrvat para-daresu: "All women should be treated as mother." Para-daresu. Para-dara means others' wife. So every woman was married. It is compulsory. This is the Vedic system, that every woman must be married. It is the duty of the father to see the daughter is married, must be married. It is called kanya-daya. You cannot evade this responsibility. You must. The father's duty is, as soon as the girl is grown-up, immediately some boy must be found out and handed over: "My dear boy, I give you this girl in charity. You take care and give her protection." This is marriage. And he agrees, "Yes, I take charge of this girl." In our society, we get married. Your government has approved our society that we can...
Madhudvisa: The Australian government in the latest Gazette has recognized the Hare Krsna movement as a bona fide religion eligible to perform legal marriages.
Prabhupada: And the other day Reverend Powell came. He also has given his announcement in the paper. What is that?
Satsvarupa: "Don't be alarmed at the Hare Krsnas." (laughter) Reverend Gordon Powell...
Guest (2): Yes, if we were alarmed we wouldn't be here.
Prabhupada: No, actually we are pledged to give something substantial to the human society. This is our mission. We are not that group, that showing some magic and take some fees and... It is not our business. We have got so many literatures full of treasurehouse of knowledge. We have to distribute that. Not bluffing, showing magic or this or that, miracles. No. We are not this. It is an institution for giving knowledge to the human society. The first beginning of knowledge is that at the present moment, people, although very much proud of their advancement of knowledge, he does not know what is the active principle of life.
Guest (2): Could we cover one more subject, sir, before we close, or do you have some...
Guest (1): I would like to ask about the writings and where they came from and so on, but you go first.
Guest (2): You should read the book. I have a very good friend, a brahmana friend in the Indian Atomic Energy Commission. How do you view the development of the potential for nuclear explosions in India?
Prabhupada: Yes, from the revealed scripture we can understand from... You have got the first part of Bhagavatam?
Caru: Yes, right here.
Prabhupada: The Asvatthama released the brahmastra?
Satsvarupa: That's in three I think.
Prabhupada: Similar nuclear weapon was there. It was called brahmastra. So when this brahmastra was released by one Asvatthama, the same symptom of nuclear weapon... Krsna krsna maha baho. That is...
Satsvarupa: We don't have that volume.
Prabhupada: Why you are lacking? You have got enough books. I inquired from you in the morning. You said, "Yes, we have got enough stock."
Madhudvisa: We have them but we do not have them here.
Prabhupada: No, that is not... Here are people coming, gentlemen coming.
Madhudvisa: The question was, Srila Prabhupada, that he wanted to know what you are thinking about India, India's...
Prabhupada: I am not thinking of India. I am not thinking of India. I am thinking for the whole human society. Why shall I think for India? Vasudha eva kutumbakam. When we become God conscious, then we don't think in that way, "I am Indian," "I am Englishman," "I am Australian," "I am this," no. We don't think. This is the crippled thinking of the materialistic person. Panditah sama darsinah [Bg. 5.18]. Find out this verse.
vidya-vinaya-sampanne
brahmane gavi hastini
suni caiva sva-pake ca
panditah sama-darsinah
 [Bg. 5.18]
Caru:
vidya-vinaya-sampanne
brahmane gavi hastini
suni caiva sva-pake ca
panditah sama-darsinah
 [Bg. 5.18]
"The humble sage, by virtue of true knowledge, sees with equal vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater."
Prabhupada: Because our vision is from the standard of the soul. The soul is there in elephant as well as in the learned scientist. So panditah sama-darsinah [Bg. 5.18], means a learned, advanced, spiritualist, he sees that everyone is soul. The body, material body, is dress. Just like we are talking with Dr. such and such, not with the dress. We are not interested with the dress, but we are interested with you, person. Similarly, these bodies are dresses, different dresses, according to the price he has paid. According to his work, nature gives him. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27].
Caru: Ahankara vimudha.
Prabhupada: Karanam guna-sango 'sya [Bg. 13.22]. Find out this verse.
Caru:
prakrteh kriyamanani
gunaih karmani sarvasah
ahankara vimudhatma
kartaham iti manyate
 [Bg. 3.27]
"The bewildered spirit soul, under the influence of the three modes of material nature, thinks himself to be the doer of activities which are in actuality carried out by nature."
Prabhupada: Nature. Nature is giving us different body. I am the spirit soul. Because I have accepted natural, the material nature's protection, I am getting different types of body. This life I have got this body, next life I may get another body. That is explained. Tatha dehantara prapti. We have to accept another body. Now you are scientist, next life you may be different. You may have a different body. Where is that science? Here is the information. But where is the science cultivated in the universities, education. There is no science, but this is a fact.
Guest (2): Well, it's just on five. Do you want to sneak in one?
Madhudvisa: These are preparations which is prepared from Australian milk.
Prabhupada: Let him take. Yes.
Guest (2): Oh, thank you.
Madhudvisa: Give a napkin. It's a sweet preparation called gulab jamin. It is all prepared just from milk which has been made into curd, and then the curd has been fried in ghee, cooking ghee, and then after it has been fried, it has been soaked in sweet water and it is very palatable. It's called a gulab jamin. It is a very famous delicacy of Indian cooking. It requires great skill and art to prepare these. And as our spiritual master said, there is actually hundreds and hundreds of food which can be prepared from this, like the cheese you have there. Even cooking cheese and spicing it with asafoetida and ginger, meat taste can be simulated very, very nicely.
Prabhupada: This cheese as it is you take, it is as beneficial as meat.
Madhudvisa: Protein.
Guest (2): Yes, yes. Similar protein.
Prabhupada: So why the animal should be killed? Take milk.
Guest (2): What is sweet water? You mean just sugar...
Madhudvisa: Syrup.
Guest (2): Now is this made here or in India?
Madhudvisa: Yes, we make it ourselves. Our spiritual master taught us how to make it. (laughter) An ancient science.
Prabhupada: No, no, I am teaching them, "Eat nicely, live nicely, and be prepared for your next life, for going back to home, back to Godhead." You can take it. It is very nice.
Guest (2): You mean to eat it now?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Guest (2): I would sooner take it home and eat it with my wife.
Prabhupada: No, no, you take, you take it. You just...
Madhudvisa: I can give you another.
Prabhupada: Yes. If you like we shall give you more.
Satsvarupa: It's very sweet. Watch it, it's very drippy though.
Guest (2): Yes, it looks like it.
Prabhupada: And if you send us cheese like this we can send you many things. (laughter)
Dr. Muncing: It's very nice, but I must save some for my family.
Dr. Harrap: I'd probably be irreligious if I said that it was soaked in rum, but... (laughter)
Dr. Muncing: It's very good.
Prabhupada: Shall I give you more?
Dr. Harrap: No, that's very nice, thank you. It'll ruin my dinner. Can I take the rest home?
Madhudvisa: Oh yes.
Dr. Muncing: Well, this has been most interesting.
Dr. Harrap: Oh, yes. Public relations for dairy research.
Madhudvisa: One thing that we would like to mention, as our spiritual master says, there is a definite, according to the Vedic scripture, there is a definite link between consumption of milk and development of fine brain tissues. And if your department of knowledge has some research in that area, we think it would be a great service to mankind if they can be informed how they can develop fine brain tissues. Fine brain tissues which are needed for coping with the problems of this day and age. Not that simply if I disagree with you we'll just fight. There has to be fine brain tissues in order to say, "Let us sit down and talk about this together." And we say, not we, but according to the scripture, there is a definite link between the consumption of milk products, not just milk, but cheese and all different milk products, the consumption of milk products and development of the necessary intellect. This is why, as our spiritual master said, the highly intelligent people of India have lived predominantly, not just drinking milk, but everything they ate was cooked in milk products. The vegetables, rice, even if rice was boiled, milk was put on, ghee was put on the rice. So that is like an unavoidable essential in their diet, not simply from the palatable standpoint, but actually from the relationship between the physical and the metaphysical progress.
Prabhupada: And thousands of tons of ghee, clarified butter, was offered in the yajna. The smoke created a kind of cloud which is very good for cultivation.
Guest (2): Well, thank you...
Prabhupada: Thank you very much. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Yogesvara: He explains that the group that he is heading up is a little bit revolutionary in the biological field. Instead of taking biology from the point of chemical, microscopic analysis, they take biology from the point of view of energetic, that is to say, everything being energy, stemming from some source, that everything is energy.Prabhupada: This is nice. Actually, it is so.
Dr. Sallaz: And our last official result is, of course, a scandal for the orthodox world. We did transmute matter from one to another. We achieved transmutation like alchemists in the Middle Age, you see. And a single element which is called iron, we make from it chrome which is another single element. And it is so revolutionary that we had the experimentation made completely not from our side but from official organization in France. (French)
Yogesvara: What he says is that the final conclusion of their research work has been...
Dr. Sallaz: One of them.
Yogesvara: One of their conclusions has been to be able to make one element to change into another element. They were able to take iron and transform it into chrome by chemical process, almost like alchemy, he says. And this was very startling for the scientific world.
Dr. Sallaz: Result. Result, only with physical heat, eight hundred, and pressure, only this. No laser, no atomic energy, nothing at all. Simply by natural measures.
Prabhupada: We can give you one information, that metals like bell metal. Bell metal is combination of...? What is called? Tin? Tin? What is another name of tin?
Yogesvara: Copper.
Prabhupada: Anyway, tin and copper and mercury; if you can mix, it will become gold.
Dr. Sallaz: I'm sure it is possible, from what we have seen and made. But it is not of great interest to make gold.
Prabhupada: No, we are interested. (laughter) We want gold for spreading Krsna consciousness. Nobody is paying us. We are simply selling our books. That's all. Nobody paying us, no government, no..., that "You take so many million dollars for spreading Krsna..." Nobody. Therefore we require some gold. So biology, what is the basic principle of biology?
Yogesvara: Do you understand his question?
Dr. Sallaz: Yes. Le principe, c'est la vie, life. And what is life? It is energy, speaking in European language.
Prabhupada: Life, what is his life?
Yogesvara: He says it is energy, life is energy.
Prabhupada: Yes. Whose energy? Whose energy? Wherefrom the energy comes?
Dr. Sallaz: From very, very high up.
Prabhupada: Hm. Yes. It is... This matter is also energy, and life is also energy. So according to Bhagavad-gita, this life, or the living being, is superior energy, and the matter is inferior energy. So this living being is combination of the superior and inferior energy. But the superior energy is not matter. It is spirit.
Dr. Sallaz: Exactly.
Prabhupada: Yes. And it is the... Both the energy are coming from God.
Dr. Sallaz: Exactly.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is our study. So the living energy, the spirit soul, it has got a formation, formation, form. That is also stated in the sastra, that 1/10,000th part of the top of the hair. Hair, the point, hair. (Yogesvara translates in French) 1/10,000 part of the... The exact version is kesagra. Kesa means hair, and agra means the top. Kesagra-sata-bhagasya [Cc. Madhya 19.140]. So that point, you divide into hundred, and take again one part of it, and again divide into hundred. That means you divide the top of the hair into ten thousand parts and then that one part is the magnitude of the soul, spiritual energy. That spiritual energy is within you, within me, within the ant, or within the elephant. So we are living entities. And the body is inferior energy, at the present moment. In the material world the body is covering. Just like you are covered by the coat.
Dr. Sallaz: No, you see, we have tried with some of our members, some of whom are very high in spiritual position, outside of this world. We have tried to look, to reach for the old truth in the very old knowledges of humanity. We have tried this with Indian knowledges. We have tried this with Chinese knowledges. We have tried this with Mexican knowledges. We have tried it everywhere. And we have found that everywhere there is, when you go deep enough, the same truth.
Yogesvara: He says among their members, many of them are spiritually inclined So they have investigated the ancient scriptures from China and Mexico, all over the world, and they found that if you go down far enough in the philosophy, it is the same truth.
Prabhupada: Yes, truth is for everyone -- if it is truth. Truth cannot be different. Chinese truth is different from Indian truth. That cannot be. Truth is the truth, provided it is truth. You take something myth as truth -- that is different thing. So the truth is that this body is formed on the basis of that spiritual spark. That is the truth.
Dr. Sallaz: For our opinion, scientific knowledges, they speak about the genetic code, and for us, the genetic code is very simple, and we have prepared a revolution, for instance, in the genetic questions in replacing the thousand of books of explanation, scientific, with a single truth, and this truth explains all the genetic code, very simple. [break]
Prabhupada: Wherefrom the energy comes?
Dr. Sallaz: From where it comes, our poor human knowledge cannot gain something precise about it. We must believe it -- it comes from very high -- but to explain it scientifically is completely foolish. That is our opinion. And further, as I said to you when looked at everywhere, if I take India, explain it coming here, that... I received it about ten or twelve years ago. That is what the Christians would speak about, a mystery, something extraordinary. I received from a holy man in India, with which I was corresponding from time to time. Without asking, I received a big book in Sanskrit. I could not understand a word about it. Well, I put it aside preciously...
Prabhupada: What is that book?
Dr. Sallaz: It was the Ayurvedic collection. The old Ayurvedic medicine. This was this book. And I learned about it only one year ago because a professor of Sanskrit from India had it come from India to Europe and he's... Paris, I believe. He was a professor of Sanskrit. And showed this book. And he said, "It is marvelous. You cannot find it anymore. It is the old Ayurvedic medicine." And this I had for ten years without knowing what.
Prabhupada: So we are very pleased that you are accepting that the life comes... Life is energy. Now, which is...
Dr. Sallaz: We give it a name, energy. It is much higher.
Prabhupada: No, it is energy, exactly the name. Because we say prakrti. Prakrti means energy, nature, nature. Just like it is said in the Bhagavad-gita, apareyam itas tu viddhi me prakrtim param. You find out this verse. (Yogesvara translates.)
Dr. Sallaz: Our aim. We are looking about. The state of the world is going down since thirty years, I said. With pollution, with strengths, with power, with everything, the world is going down, going to the catastrophe. And there is only one possibility to save it. It is a question of spiritual revolution. Without a spiritual revolution, between twenty, twenty-five years, the world is finished, all the world of which people are so proud.
Prabhupada: Very good.
Dr. Sallaz: And this we are doing everything in our power to prepare and to do what we can to prepare this spiritual revolution. It is the thing we have to do today to save the world. Without spiritual revolution, there is no possibility to save the world. It is going down definitely. For this earth, yes.
Prabhupada: So we have started this movement, spiritual revolution, Krsna consciousness. So why don't you cooperate with us?
Dr. Sallaz: Oh, you see we are doing in our field everything we can and we are preparing to bring this special revolution. We have to bring to light all the old knowledges, the real spiritual knowledge. And this is what we are preparing. And it will take one or two years more until everything is prepared, can be shown.
Prabhupada: You have studied Bhagavad-gita?
Dr. Sallaz: Some. Some of the members know it perfectly. I do not.
Prabhupada: So you read that. Energy, two energies, how they are explained. Bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh.
Dr. Sallaz: You see some of members are... (French)
Pusta-krsna: This is in the Seventh Chapter of the Bhagavad-gita, text numbers four and five.
bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh
kham mano buddhir eva ca
ahankara itiyam me
bhinna prakrtir astadha
 [Bg. 7.4]
"Translation: Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego-altogether these eight comprise My separated material energies."
Prabhupada: This is material energy. Bhumir apo 'nalah, explain that.
Pusta-krsna: That the material energies -- earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego -- these energies, they come from Krsna. In other words, we are speaking of energy. There is an origin to the energy. We always have an experience. Just like there is sunshine here, but the sun, origin, is millions of miles away. So in the same way these energies also have origin. It's not that they are just existing without some source. And Krsna is describing here in the Seventh Chapter -- this is called Knowledge of the Absolute -- how these energies are related to Him. Now, in the material world it's described that there are two energies. This is called bhinna prakrtir astadha, inferior energy. This will be described in the next verse. Apareyam itas tv anyam prakrtim viddhi me param [Bg. 7.5]. Now, this is describing the superior energy or the param, the param prakrti. And this is described, "Besides this inferior nature," which is this earth, air, water, fire, ether, "O Mighty-armed Arjuna, there is a superior energy of Mine which are all the living entities who are struggling with material nature and are sustaining the universe." So this earth, air, water, fire and ether... Just like your body, it is being sustained by the soul. And as soon as the soul leaves the body, then, of course, the earth, air, water, fire and ether, it is no longer sustained in this fashion. It merges into the various elements or energies. And in this way, we can understand that the material world is made up of two energies, as my spiritual master said: the inferior energy, or this apara-prakrti, earth, air, water, fire, ether, etc., and the superior energy, or the living force. So the point is that the life force does not come from a combination of earth, air, water, fire, ether. It is separate. That is a superior energy. And on this point we agree. Now, we have to find out what is the source of both the superior and inferior material energies, or what is God.
Prabhupada: And that is spiritual energy. That is spiritual energy. When we find out the source of these two energies, that the beginning of spiritual life, or spiritual understanding.
Dr. Sallaz: And, Your Holiness, you know, some of our members know this perfectly, Bhagavad-gita and all the holy scriptures, ancient holy scriptures, and all the others too, and have studied them for years, trying to look for truth. I am not in this stage and I'm...
Prabhupada: But truth is there, explained. Truth is there, Krsna. From Him, the energies are coming. He is the Absolute Truth. Param satyam dhimahi. Krsna is the Absolute Truth, satyam. Then Bhagavata explains, param satyam dhimahi. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. So the Supreme Truth is there within our understanding. But people do not know it. Therefore spiritual revolution means the people should understand what is the Supreme Truth, and then mold their character and activities according to that relationship. Then that is success of human life.
Dr. Sallaz: And I can say to you, we are making a very..., preparing, some of our members, a very important work, which is explanation from the medical point of view of all the genetic code which is in science something absolutely terrific, plenty, thousands of books and so on.
Yogesvara: What is your explanation of the genetic code?
Dr. Sallaz: (French)
Yogesvara: He says... Very interesting. He says one of the conclusions that they have arrived at is that despite all of your research work, despite all of your scientific studies, if you don't have a simple spirit of inquiry, you won't be able to understand the codes of life. He says the genetic codes, actually, it is a great secret, a mystery, which they are trying to prepare for general understanding, and that secret is that you must be of a simple, humble spirit in order to understand the mysteries of life.
Dr. Sallaz: You must try to look for truth, and when you look for truth, you see very extraordinary and simple solution explaining everything for the scientific men. But the time is not right to give it to them. A little later, yes.
Pusta-krsna: You spoke of a destruction. You said that without a spiritual revolution, there would be some type of destruction. What exactly do you think of as destruction?
Dr. Sallaz: Oh, the world will be dead.
Pusta-krsna: No. In the Bhagavad-gita we have information that the living force, or the soul, is neither born and neither it dies.
Dr. Sallaz: Ah, yes. I meant this world. Matter is the earth. Be careful. I don't mean life in general...
Pusta-krsna: Now, this is the point that my spiritual master is bringing out, that the material energy is inferior, and in order to have a spiritual revolution you have to understand the superior energy which is eternal, without birth and without death. So, of course, there is no question of destruction for the soul.
Dr. Sallaz: Destruction in our occidental language and practically, which is not yours.
Pusta-krsna: Destruction in simple terms, just as we know something has a beginning and something has an end. That is destruction. So in Vedic terms that which has a beginning and has an end is called material, and that which has no beginning and no end, but is existing nonetheless, that is called spiritual or superior energy.
Dr. Sallaz: Of course. This cannot be destroyed.
Prabhupada: Yes. That cannot be destroyed.
Dr. Sallaz: That cannot be destroyed. It can disappear from the living people, Christian or other of this world, but not at all.
Prabhupada: Then what do you mean by spiritual revolution?
Dr. Sallaz: It is to see, to look, for the real truth, the simple truth. The very simple truth. And to abandon our way of life aiming only for money, power and material things, to go back to simple living and especially to living with up.
Prabhupada: Living with?
Yogesvara: Living with higher thoughts.
Prabhupada: Then higher thoughts... Is there any definition of the higher thoughts? (French)
Yogesvara: He says humanly it is impossible to understand it.
Dr. Sallaz: We can feel it. We can believe it, but we cannot explain it.
Prabhupada: No, if there is explanation by a person who is not a human being, say, God.
Dr. Sallaz: Yes, we say God.
Prabhupada: Then why should you not take it? (French)
Dr. Sallaz: We'll accept. (French)
Yogesvara: He said if it were presented he would accept it and try to promote it.
Prabhupada: Just find out this verse, Eighth Chapter, paras tasmat tu bhavah anyah avyakto 'vyaktat sanatanah [Bg. 8.20]. Find out the index.
Pusta-krsna: Paras tasmat tu bhavo 'nyo 'vyakto 'vyaktat sanatanah: "Yet there is another nature which is eternal and is transcendental to this manifested and unmanifested matter. It is supreme and is never annihilated. When all in this world is annihilated, that part remains as it is."
Dr. Sallaz: I am quite agree. And we do all in our center agree with it.
Prabhupada: So then, first of all, we have to understand what is our constitutional position. We are superior-we, living entities -- we are superior energy, eternal. And after annihilation of this body, I, the spirit soul, superior energy, am not annihilated. I accept another body, material body. And there are varieties of body, 8,400,000. (Yogesvara translates)
Dr. Sallaz: And on this point of view, when some people are going very badly, wrong with us, of course, for us it is like air, but we say, "Poor people, what about their karma?" That is how we look it, "What about their karma?" It is a pity for them that they do so wrong, because they will have to pay for it. That is all.
Prabhupada: Yes. That "pay for it" means, he has got this chance of human body. Now he will have to accept lower grade animal body. (French)
Yogesvara: He says that at least on these points we are in agreement.
Prabhupada: Therefore the real inconvenience is that I am eternal. I am now put into such condition that I have to change my body, and there is risk of getting degraded body. Therefore my problem is that -- I am put into this condition, repetition of change of body -- to get out of it -- that is spiritual life -- and transfer myself there. Paras tasmat tu bhavo 'nyah [Bg. 8.20]. Just like we are in this material nature. If we transfer to that spiritual nature, then there is no more this problem, getting this body, again annihilate, again get another body, again annihilate. This problem is solved. And that is spiritual life. (French)
Yogesvara: So he says they completely accept that there is a superior energy which can be attained.
Prabhupada: So therefore human activities should be dovetailed for going back to home, back to Godhead. That is spiritual movement. (French)
Yogesvara: This is also their idea. This is their point.
Prabhupada: We are giving this idea in practical form. Why not cooperate with us? (French)
Yogesvara: He says first of all, so far as cooperation is concerned, he is just one man. He is the president, although he is the president, still, he is only one man, and he can only speak in terms of cooperating with the spiritual movement among the more enlightened members of his group.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is required, because if the enlightened men of the society does something, others will follow. It is not that the general mass of people has to be educated. They will be automatically educated. They will follow. If the enlightened man is living in such a way that he is going to be transferred to the spiritual world, then others will follow. That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita, yad yad acarati sresthah [Bg. 3.21]. At least, there must be a class of men, ideal men, that they are preparing themselves for transferring to the spiritual world. Then people will see that "Here is the ideal man," and they will try to follow. (French) But if people see that "He is also like us. He is also drinking, he is also eating meat, and he is also having illicit sex," then where is the ideal man? Everyone is implicated with these things, sinful life. (French)
Yogesvara: He knows about Guru Maharaji. He says he has so many people following him. The only conclusion that we can have is that there are many, many people who are looking for spiritual life.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Sallaz: And they took everything they can find.
Prabhupada: That is a fact. People, especially in the western world, they are actually looking after some spiritual emancipation, but they think that from India... Actually, that is a fact. Therefore, any rascal comes, they go around him. But why the western people, those who are on the top of educational and social position, they try to understand what is spirit life and follow them, and place an ideal life so that others may follow. (French)
Yogesvara: Some of his members, some friends, were even visitors at the temples at Benares.
Prabhupada: That is as a tourist, but that is not understanding of spiritual life.
Dr. Sallaz: I don't speak of tourist. I speak of a holy man. Be careful. Not a tourist. As a man having attained very high in truth, and for this reason, and not as a tourist. He was at the time crowded like you.
Prabhupada: Holy man means...
Dr. Sallaz: (French)
Prabhupada: The real purpose of going to holy places is to find out there the holy man and take knowledge from him. That is real going to the holy places of pilgrimage. (French)
Yogesvara: He says that his members, who have gone to India, they themselves are considered to be holy men.
Dr. Sallaz: And he went not there as tourist or to inquire. He went to speak, to try to speak about the truth, not about..., for questions.
Prabhupada: So some of you have gone. So what truth you have seen? That is... What is the truth? What you have learned about the truth? (French)
Yogesvara: That we must continue to look for it.
Prabhupada: But that is... They have not looked. Or they have not found out.
Dr. Sallaz: To try to reach it.
Prabhupada: They are trying. They are trying, but they have not reached. (French)
Yogesvara: He says he doesn't pretend to have found it.
Prabhupada: That's it. But then the next step is just to now find it. Here is the truth, Bhagavad-gita, Krsna. So why don't you accept this truth? If you are actually trying to find out the truth, here is the truth. It is accepted by all learned scholars and acaryas of India: the Supreme Absolute Truth is Krsna, so why don't you study Krsna? (French)
Yogesvara: He says that's the kind of question you would have to ask his members.
Prabhupada: I can ask the members. I can talk with the members. If they are actually trying to find out the truth, then I can present them the truth. (French)
Yogesvara: He says that perhaps his members won't think that they need this kind of truth.
Prabhupada: Then what is the searching after truth? It is hypocrisy. (French)
Yogesvara: Maybe they already know the truth.
Prabhupada: Then what is that truth? Let us know.
Dr. Sallaz: I am sure that some of them knows perfectly well all the Bhagavad-gita. (French)
Prabhupada: What is that?
Yogesvara: He says that you don't really need proof to convince anyone. Why should he have to show proof that you know...
Prabhupada: No, if you are searching after truth... Suppose if you are searching after gold. And if I give you gold, why don't you accept it? (French)
Yogesvara: Apparently his position is that by their research, they have discovered the truth.
Prabhupada: What is that truth? (French)
Yogesvara: He says it's the same truth that we are following.
Prabhupada: Well, same truth, this is vague. But what is the tangible presentation of the truth. (French)
Yogesvara: He says he can't explain it.
Prabhupada: We can explain it. Why does he not take from us? We can explain it. (French)
Prabhupada: If he knows truth, let him explain. If he does not know, take from us. (French)
Dr. Sallaz: I do not. Be careful. I am trying to understand. I do not. I don't say to you I know the truth, not at all. I hope to know...
Prabhupada: Then why don't you take truth from us? (French)
Yogesvara: He says because he already has a guru and he already has everything he needs.
Prabhupada: But your guru has not given you the truth. You do not know. (French)
Yogesvara: He says that the guru doesn't give the truth just like that. He says it's something that you have to work for little by little.
Prabhupada: Then he does not know what is truth. We can give truth. Just like I give you some money, "Here, take this hundred dollars," we can give the truth in that way. (French)
Yogesvara: Why he should take it just like that when he can go on as he is going, preparing himself little bit by little bit.
Prabhupada: Why little bit? If he gets the, I mean to say, thing immediately, why should you go little by little? (French) Suppose you are... (French)
Yogesvara: He says because he finds it more pleasing. His spiritual master has given him a name Ratnananda, and he says that that name means one who prepares himself little by little for the truth.
Prabhupada: But is that very good intelligence? Suppose you are searching after one million dollars. You are working little by little, little, and if somebody says, "Here is one million dollar. You take it," Why don't you take it? (French)
Yogesvara: He says it's a moral question. He already has his guru, and his guru has died. He's gone over to the other side, and he can't change gurus.
Prabhupada: But there is no question of changing guru. If he is actually searching after the truth, then why he is denying the truth when it is delivered? (French)
Yogesvara: He would have to be sure that it was the actual highest truth.
Dr. Sallaz: The real truth, eternal truth. Because you see...
Prabhupada: That is... That we are... (French)
Yogesvara: This is what the conclusion we came to yesterday with that other guest, that he says they have also find truths in China, they have also found truths in other scriptures.
Prabhupada: So what is that truth? (French) [break] ...is that reality?
Yogesvara: He says he himself, he doesn't have the words to describe it.
Prabhupada: If you cannot describe the reality, then you have not received the reality. (French) [break] That means, as soon as you say you cannot describe, then you have no idea what is the reality.
Yogesvara: He's willing to admit that.
Prabhupada: So if you are actually searching after reality, why not, if reality is available from other source, why don't you take it? [break]
Yogesvara: Because certainly his members would have some questions they would want to ask you, and perhaps even you might have some questions that you would want to ask his members.
Prabhupada: Very good. We are prepared. (French)
Yogesvara: I think the thing is to make arrangement for such a meeting. Otherwise...
Prabhupada: Then make arrangement. But our pro... (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: If sexual intercourse is the beginning of life, then why it is not always successful? We say that when the life, living entity, is there in the semina and it is put into the woman's womb, then body develops. Therefore, the beginning is the life. This is practical. And this life is the part and parcel of the supreme life. Therefore the beginning is God. Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. Athato brahma jijnasa. So we have to establish this theory in this misguided world that... And besides that, why they cannot produce life from matter? What is the value of their statement? That they have not been able to do. Where is the proof that from matter life comes? You do it.Svarupa Damodara: Proof is under investigation. (laughter)
Prabhupada: Eh? That is nonsense. That is nonsense. This proof, that from life, life is coming, there is proof, so many proof. A man, animal, trees -- everything is coming from life. Up till now, nobody has seen that a man is born from a stone. Nobody has seen. Sometimes it is called vrscika-tandula-nyaya. You know that? Vrscika-tandula-nyaya. Vrscika means scorpion, and tandula means rice. Sometimes we see some heaps of rice, the scorpion is coming. But that is not that the rice has given birth to the scorpion. You have not seen in your country? We have seen it. From the rice, heaps of rice, one scorpion, small scorpion, is coming. The fact is that the parent of the scorpion, they put their eggs within the rice and, being fermented, the scorpion comes out, not that from rice the scorpion is coming out. Therefore it is called vrscika-tandula-nyaya. Vrscika means scorpion, and tandula means rice. So "Life is coming from matter" -- this is called vrscika-tandula-nyaya. Life cannot come from matter. Besides that... Just like when there is life, living entity, the body grows, body changes or grows, as you say. But if the child is dead or come out dead, then the body does not grow. Then matter is growing on life. Why, a dead child born, it does not grow? What is the reason? What is your scientists' reason?
Svarupa Damodara: They will say that somehow the chemical reactions are not going right in the body, in the dead body.
Prabhupada: But you give the chemical. You rascal, you have got so many chemicals. Why don't you give it? What is the use of saying like that? Now the child is dead. Now you give some chemical injection and bring it into life. Why you cannot do that? If you cannot do that, then what is the nonsense, saying that some chemical is missing? If it is missing, you replace it. Why you cannot replace?
Svarupa Damodara: Because they haven't found out the chemical.
Prabhupada: Therefore you are rascal. You do not know what is that chemical, and still you say that some chemical is missing. This is going on, bluffing, cheating. This should be stopped. You do not know what is that chemical missing; still, you say, "Some chemical missing. Why do you say like that?"
Svarupa Damodara: Recently there were some journals that came out. The title is called "The Origin of Life." I will bring in school when we discuss... It started about from last year. And they have got an international association of scientists, and they discuss about the origin of life. And then... I wrote a letter to the editor of that journal, and they replied me that they're going to have another meeting, international meeting, in Japan in 1977. And there will be several meetings in Europe in the coming years. So their aim and object is to prove that life started from chemicals. It is a big group, all international scientists. So he asked me to become a member of a research group.
Prabhupada: So you become member and protest, "No," and prove. You just become the opposite.
Svarupa Damodara: I also asked whether they...
Prabhupada: Don't say, "Yes, it is all right." No, don't say. That will be your duty.
Svarupa Damodara: Right now we are planning to write that book all together, all the Godbrothers so that for the God we have some background and what we have learned from Prabhupada, and then we can...
Prabhupada: This kind of answer, that if I ask you that "You produce life from chemicals," and if you answer that "Yes, we shall do it in future," that is not very scientific answer. What do you think? Is that very scientific answer?
Madhava: No. But that's what they think is scientific.
Prabhupada: How it is scientific? Life is already there. Not that the life production is depending on your future scientific research. The life is already going there, hundreds and thousands and millions. You say that you do not know. Why you are claiming that "In future we shall know"? There is no need of your knowing, it is already going on. You do not know. That is your position. And still, you are declaring yourself as scientist. You are misleading. You can make a fool's paradise, that is another thing. But you do not know at the present moment, but the things are going on. Life is being produced without your knowledge. So you admit that you have no knowledge. And without having knowledge, you are declaring yourself as scientist -- how much cheating it is. It is not that it is depending on your future knowledge. It is already going on. Life is being produced. So if you think that in future, by chemical combination you will produce life, so that chemical composition is already there, going on. So you have to find out who is that scientist, not that chemical composition. Who is that scientist who is producing so many lives and chemicals? That is real intelligence.
Svarupa Damodara: That's why we title our book as "The Origin of Life in Matter." We do not talk simply "life" because...
Prabhupada: Origin of everything.
Svarupa Damodara: Yes. Matter, crude matter, origin of the chemicals, the, this carbon, hydrogen, these elements, these also, there is a brain behind it who made these chemicals.
Prabhupada: Yes. So we have to find out who is that brain, who is that scientist. That is real research. Athato brahma jijnasa. This is brahma-jijnasa. Jijnasa means enquiry, that "Who is that brain?" Because things are already going on. It is not depending on your so-called research. It is already going on nicely. So your business should be: "Who is that brain behind it?" That should be your research, not that how chemical combination can be... It is already being produced without your so-called scientific knowledge. It is already going on. So as you are taxing your brain that "How this chemical combination produces life?" So that brain is already there. Otherwise how life is coming? What do you think? So why you are trying to find out the chemicals? You find out the brain. As you are taxing your brain to find out the chemicals, the original brain has already done it. Now you find out who is that person who has got such a nice brain.
Svarupa Damodara: That is the real research.
Prabhupada: That is real research. You point out this, not that, your chemical combination. It is already done. And people are already taking advantage like that. If there is some discovery by some scientist, he praises the man who has discovered this.
Rupanuga: He names the man, experiment for the man.
Prabhupada: Yes. The man is important, who has done it. The person is important. So am I right or wrong? So find out the person, who is that person.
Tamala Krsna: Suppose they say that it just came about by chance.
Prabhupada: That is kick on your face with boots. Immediately: boom! (laughter) That's all. That is the answer, only answer. Rascaldom answer, "chance." The only answer is to kick his face with the boot, that's all, as soon as he says chance.
Svarupa Damodara: So Richard Prabhu is going to write a topic, a chapter, that mathematical proof of the idea that chance comes into play, that...
Prabhupada: Your mathematics is also imperfect because you are imperfect. You are imperfect. There is nothing chance. There must be cause. You do not know the cause. You cannot find out. You are taking a loophole, chance. Then why you are making so many scientific research? Chance, let it happen, everything, by chance. Then what is the use of your scientific research? Let everything happen by chance. There is no chance.
Svarupa Damodara: Another answer that we come across when we talk with these people...
Prabhupada: There is nowadays the chance theory.
Svarupa Damodara: No, chance is not so much popular, but the answer that "chemicals were supplied by nature," that's a very...
Prabhupada: No, what is nature? That you cannot explain.
Svarupa Damodara: That is the answer, theirs. When we ask the scientists...
Prabhupada: But what is this nature?
Svarupa Damodara: Yes, the nature is not understood.
Prabhupada: You see? That means you are rascal. You have not understood. You have no knowledge. As soon as you cannot explain, you prove your foolishness, that's all. That is not scientific answer, "chance," "nature." What is the nature? Who is conducting nature? How the nature is going on so nicely?
Rupanuga: You said before they were acting as teachers, but actually they are still students.
Prabhupada: No, they are cheater. They are cheater, not teacher, cheater. They have no full knowledge; still, they have become teacher. You cannot become teacher unless you have got full knowledge. That is cheater.
Tamala Krsna: Srila Prabhupada, suppose that they acknowledge the fact that they do not know, but they challenge, "How do you know what you believe is right?"
Prabhupada: Because I have approached the Supreme, the supreme brain, Krsna. He is the perfect person in knowledge. Aisvaryasya, jnana. Vedaham samatitani [Bg. 7.26]. He knows everything. He is conducting nature. Mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa-caracaram [Bg. 9.10]. Yasyajnaya bhramati sambhrta-kalacakro. Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. So we know from the perfect. Therefore my knowledge is perfect. I am not perfect; that's a fact. But my knowledge is perfect. Just like I am not an electrician. But the electrician has told me that "You push this button. There will be light." So I am doing that. What is the use of becoming electrician? I want light, and the electrician told me, "Just push this button." I am doing that, and light is there. That's all. You cannot say, "You are not a electrician. How you can say the light...?" And I know from the perfect person, and it is acting. This is our position. It doesn't require that I will have to become electrician. The electrician has told that "You push this button," and there is light. That's all. Does it require that I will have to become a electrician to conduct this light?
Rupanuga: No, it simply requires that one listen and take instructions.
Prabhupada: That's all. Therefore sruti, Vedas. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum eva abhi... [MU 1.2.12]. Hear from the guru and do it. That's all.
guru-mukha-padma-vakya, cittete koriya aikya
Now, what is that song? Who knows this song, sri-guru-carana-padma **?
Nitai:
guru-mukha-padma-vakya, cittete koriya aikya,
ar na koriho mane asa
Prabhupada: Koriho mane asa. Do not try to research anything. That is final.
ar na koriho mane asa.
If the guru is perfect, your knowledge is perfect. And how guru becomes perfect? He has heard from his guru. That's all. Evam parampara-praptam [Bg. 4.2]. Krsna is the original guru. Imam vivasvate yogam proktavan aham avyayam, vivasvan manave prahu [Bg. 4.1]. This is parampara system. You hear... Just like Lord Brahma heard from Krsna, tene brahma hrda adi-kavaye. He gave the knowledge to Brahma. Brahma distributed the knowledge. Therefore Vedic knowledge is perfect. The Vedic knowledge comes from the Supreme Person. Vedaham. Vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyam vedanta-vid vedanta-krt caham [Bg. 15.15]. So Vedic knowledge is coming from Krsna, and it is received by Brahma, and then Narada receives. Then Vyasadeva receives. Then he gives us all these Vedic literature. We understand. That's all. It is not by so-called rascal's research. Research means they are rascal. That's all.
Rupanuga: Krsna says, "Take it from Me."
Prabhupada: Yes. And if he wants to make research, that means he is a rascal number one. If you want to make research, then search out what is the original brain, not the process. Process is already going on. What is the use of your research, nonsense? Suppose by chemical combination, if you produce one life... You will never be able. But still, if you think that you will be able or you become able, then what is credit to you? Without your help there, millions and millions of life are being manufactured, without your help. Then what is your credit?
Tamala Krsna: Imitating a barking dog.
Prabhupada: That's it. So millions of dogs are barking, and one man has learned how to bark like dog, and people will go to see him by purchasing ticket. This is their foolishness. Suppose if you somehow or other become able to produce life from chemical, then what is your credit? It is like barking dog. Millions of dog are barking. Now you have learned how to bark like dog. So what is your credit? It may be for the rascal fools that you are scientist, but we are not so rascal.
Rupanuga: They will clap. The fools will clap.
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes. "How nice barking. Oh, how he has learned to bark." Just see. We are not so fools. Krsna yei bhaje sei bado catura: "The first-class intelligent man is he who is Krsna conscious." Sei bado catura. All rascals. Krsna said, na mam duskrtinah mudhah. "Oh? Also very scientist?" mayayapahrta-jnana: "They have no knowledge, all rascals." Krsna says. mayayapahrta-jnana, that he is not thinking, that "Suppose I can produce life by chemical combination, then what is my credit? The life is already there. It is going on very nicely." What do you think, Balavanta? If the things are going on nicely, then where is my credit? Either you say, "by chance," or "by God's arrangement," "by nature," but things are going on nicely. So it is same thing, to learn how to bark, that's all. Barking is going on, but he wants to take credit by learning how to bark. That's all.
Madhava: They try to imitate God.
Prabhupada: That's all. That he cannot, and that is his foolishness. Therefore we say that you are cheating. Things are already there, going on. What is your credit?
Rupanuga: The scientists are trying to be the hero. Krsna is the hero. He has done everything first, and the scientist wants to be the hero.
Prabhupada: So you have to present like this, that "What is the credit? Suppose by chemical composition you can manufacture one ant. That is not possible. Be assured you will never be able. That we are assured. But even if you are able, then what is your credit? The credit is the man has learned how to bark like a dog. That's all, this much credit."
Svarupa Damodara: No, if they are able to make life, then they are going to say that there's no God.
Prabhupada: Yes, but first of all you produce. Then say. Why you are anticipating that you will be able to...?
Rupanuga: Still, who is the bigger God? If I make one ant, and there's already many, many ants made by a bigger God than me...
Tamala Krsna: Yes, so He is God. Whoever has made the most, He should be God.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Rupanuga: So we must recognize Krsna as the big scientist.
Prabhupada: That is... This foolishness is going on throughout the whole world, and scientist and people are after the so-called scientist, Darwin. So we want to stop this misleading. That is our duty.
Svarupa Damodara: Actually, the way they study the origin of life is nothing but the origin of molecules. It's not actually of life, the way they are studying. So there is a misunderstanding what is life and what is matter.
Prabhupada: No, no, whatever they are studying, this rascal cannot make life even with combination of those original molecules. Where is that proof? Our challenge is that because they cannot do it, therefore they are rascals. And that vrscika tandula nyaya, that a scorpion is coming out of rice, that's it.
Svarupa Damodara: Their claim depends on the...
Prabhupada: There are life manifestation, according to Vedic literature, that some of the life, they are coming from eggs, some of the life, they are coming from perspiration, some of the lives come from a seed, and some of the life comes from embryo. This is all stated there. Sveda-ja, udbi-ja, anda-ja, jarayu-ja. They already there. Jarayu means embryo, and sveda means perspiration. Life is everywhere. When they take little advantage, they come out, manifest. You will find even on the pavement, footpath, as soon as there is crack, some grass is coming out. So life is everywhere, it is struggling, and as soon as there is favorable circumstances, they come in a form. That's it. Life is not created, na jayate. Read Bhagavad-gita. Na jayate: "Life is never created." It is existing eternally. Therefore it is said, na jayate. So unfortunate rascals, they do not take advantage of Bhagavad-gita and making research. So we want to stop this rascaldom. They are trying to create life, and it is stated in the Bhagavad..., na jayate: "It is never created." It is already there. Simply it is coming out, being manifest by different bodies, 8,400,000 forms. That I was explaining last night. According to his desire. The life is already there, and according to his desire, he is coming out in different forms. That is going on. This is a false theory, that chemical can create life. It is nonsense. Life is never created, life is already there. God is already there, and the part and particles, molecules, life, was already there. Na jayate mriyate va kadacit. This word is used, kadacit, "at any time." So we have got perfect knowledge. Why should we say, "Yes," with these rascals? We have got perfect knowledge.
Rupanuga: They say matter can never be created or destroyed, but they do not know that life cannot be created or destroyed.
Prabhupada: Nothing cannot be created. Life also cannot be created. They are already there. But matter is manifest, not manifest. Just like this body is manifest because the life is there. Now, this body will be destroyed, but I will exist. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. I will accept another body, and it will grow. Therefore the matter grows on the basis of life, not that from matter, life comes. This is all rascaldom. So now, by the grace of... We have got scientists. Let them protest. Save the people from this ignorance. Mudha. That is our mission. Give them chance. They have got human body. Let them become Krsna conscious and give up all this nonsense thing. Hitva anyatha rupam svarupena avasthitih. Mukti, this is mukti. They are mad after something wrong. So they should be saved, and they should give up this so-called materialism and come to service to the Krsna, his eternal job. Then that is mukti. He is liberated.
Rupanuga: So this book actually, is directed to scientifically-minded people because in this age people are getting educated. They are getting scientific-minded.
Prabhupada: But that creating problem. The psychiatrists came to see me, where? Caracas. So I said -- he admitted, both the psychiatrists -- that "You are not treating the real person who is diseased." I gave him the example, that "You have got good car, but the driver is a madman, and he is creating disaster, and you psychiatrists are going to cure it. You never say that 'The driver is bad. Change him or just educate him. Then there will be no disaster.' But you are taking your fees and giving some repairing in the car. But you do not know what is the original cause of disaster. It is not chance. Due to the bad driver." So our propaganda is to give the bad driver nice knowledge so that he can drive the car to Vaikuntha. That is our position. And these rascals, the materialists, they are simply painting the body of the car. And the driver? "Let him starve."
Rupanuga: They are like the cheating mechanics.
Prabhupada: That's all. All these medical men, psychiatrists, they are simply painting the body of the car. That's all. What is that?
Vira-laksmana: Srila Prabhupada, the scientists, they've reported in one journal of theirs that by taking some chemicals of methane, ammonia and carbon and injecting it with electricity, that equation or that formula equates them to an energy that is called amino acid in due course of time. That is, they say, the building blocks of life, of protein.
Prabhupada: So why do they not do that?
Vira-laksmana: They've made an experiment...
Prabhupada: That means they are not in knowledge. That I am speaking, the barking dog. First of all make experiment, produce life. Then come and say. Otherwise don't bark like a dog, imitation. Simply big, big words. Produce. Our theory is that... In the sastra it is said harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam, kalau nasty eva nas... [Cc. Adi 17.21]. That practical proof we are giving, that these Europeans, Americans, they are simply chanting Hare Krsna and how they are coming out, this practical proof. They did not know five or six years ago what is Krsna, what is Krsna's name. But we are taking the conclusion of the sastra: in this age, if one chants Hare Krsna, he becomes spiritualized. That is becoming, practically. It is not theory. How so many devotees are in this Atlanta, here? Anywhere, wherever we have started, how they have become devotee? Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that "You follow this formula and you will become God conscious." That is being practically proved. It is not theory. So that is Vedic knowledge. You adopt Vedic knowledge and get the result, not that "This ammonia, this chemical, that chemical, but I cannot do anything." The rascal said, "That I cannot say." You...
Svarupa Damodara: Yes.
Prabhupada: He asked him, that rascal chemist, that "If I give you the chemicals, can you manufacture life?" That time he said, "No, that I cannot say." Why do you say like that? In the beginning, in New York, that store front, the Satsvarupa is with..., and Hayagriva and... And you chant simply. You were also there. So this chanting is proving efficient. That is Vedic knowledge. It is not theory. Our, this Krsna consciousness movement is not theory or mental speculation. It is a fact. So therefore it is said,
guru-mukha-padma-vakya, cittete koriya aikya,
ar na koriho mane asa **
So whatever little success I have got, it is only for this reason. My Guru Maharaja said that "You go and preach whatever you learned in English language." That's all. So I came here with this faith, that "My Guru Maharaja said. I must be successful." I did not show any jugglery to you, gold-making jugglery. Where is my gold? I came with forty rupees first. (chuckles) So these are Vedic instruction, guru-mukha-padma-vakya **, and:
sri-guru-carane rati, ei se uttama-gati
That is real progress. So this is Vedic instruction. We have to follow the Vedic injunction. Then you will be successful. Not these rascals' theory. It is useless.
Svarupa Damodara: The standard of knowledge has to be there, but they do not know that there is a standard. The scientists, these researchers working in different fields, not only scientists, any field of knowledge, there must be a standard.
Prabhupada: The standard is given by... That is standard, as that Vedic language, Vedic instruction. Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave the standard, harer nama: [Cc. Adi 17.21] "Chant Hare Krsna." Immediately successful. That is standard. Otherwise how you will find standard? Therefore it is said, guru-mukha-pad... That is standard. What you hear from a bona fide guru, that is standard. Krsna says, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. Anyone who will do this standard, he will become devotee. And as soon as he become devotee, he is fit for going back to home, back to Godhead. Yes, this is standard. What Krsna says? Find out this verse. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. Whatever Krsna says, that is standard. All nonsense. Ar na koriho mane asa. Don't accept anything. This is standard. What is that?
Paramahamsa:
man-mana bhava mad-bhakto
mad-yaji mam namaskuru
mam evaisyasi satyam te
pratijane priyo 'si me
 [Bg. 18.65]
"Always think of Me and become My devotee. Worship Me and offer..." (end)
