"There Is No Training"

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.7.13-14
Vrndavana, September 12, 1976

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Devotee:

yada mrdhe kaurava-srnjayanam
viresv atho vira-gatim gatesu
vrkodaraviddha-gadabhimarsa-
bhagnoru-dande dhrtarastra-putre

bhartuh priyam draunir iti sma pasyan
krsna-sutanam svapatam siramsi
upaharad vipriyam eva tasya
jugupsitam karma vigarhayanti

"When the respective warriors of both camps, namely the Kauravas and the Pandavas, were killed on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra, and the dead warriors obtained their deserved destinations, and when the son of Dhrtarastra fell down lamenting, his spine broken, being beaten by the club of Bhimasena, the son of Dronacarya (Asvatthama) beheaded the five sleeping sons of Draupadi and delivered them as a prize to his master, foolishly thinking that he would be pleased. Duryodhana, however, disapproved of the heinous act, and he was not pleased in the least."

Prabhupada:

yada mrdhe kaurava-srnjayanam
viresv atho vira-gatim gatesu
vrkodaraviddha-gadabhimarsa-
bhagnoru-dande dhrtarastra-putre

bhartuh priyam draunir iti sma pasyan
krsna-sutanam svapatam siramsi
upaharad vipriyam eva tasya
jugupsitam karma vigarhayanti

So Drauni, Dronacarya's son, a brahmana, but he took the profession of a ksatriya. That is degradation. When a brahmana takes the occupation of a ksatriya, it is degradation. So this Drauni, although he belonged to the brahmana family and he accepted the profession of a ksatriya, he degraded so much that he cut off the heads of five sons of Draupadi while they were sleeping. So much degradation. A ksatriya never slains anybody who is sleeping. Ksatriya's business is to challenge, and if the other party has no weapon, he supplies weapon. Then there is fight, then it is decided. One must die. That decision is there. When there is fight between two ksatriyas, the decision is that one must die. Unless one dies, the business, the fighting, will never stop. That is called vira-gatim. Vira-gatim. If a ksatriya dies in fight, he gets the promotion of vira-gatim, means he goes to the heavenly planet. This was advised by Krsna to Arjuna, that "You fight. If you are victorious, then you will enjoy this kingdom, and if you are killed, then you'll go to the heavenly planets. Then where is your loss? Both ways you shall gain. Why shall you not fight?" This advice was given by Krsna.

So here it is said yada mrdhe kaurava-srnjayanam. In the fight all the parties who died, they all obtained vira-gatim. And most of them they achieved svarupa. That is described in a different place. Svarupa means his original, spiritual form. All the soldiers or the kings who died, and at the time of death who were seeing Krsna -- Krsna was there in the battlefield -- all of them achieved their original, spiritual form. Svarupam. And those who did not see Krsna, they got promoted vira-gatim, in the heavenly planet. So fight is not always bad. If it is dharma-yuddha, according to the prescribed rules, not whimsical fight, dharma-yuddha, then there is gain. This science is lost. There is no such thing. Now fighting means hooliganism, vandalism, gunda-ism. That is not fight. Here is fight: vira-gatim gate. They are all promoted.

Then at last the fighting was between Dhrtarastra and Bhima. This vrkodara... Vrkodaraviddha-gadabhimarsa. Both of them, Duryodhana and Bhima, they were very expert in fighting with gada. So when they were fighting, Balarama... Balarama... Krsna was neutral, but He was taking the side of Arjuna. He was driving the chariot. That means He was on the side of the Pandavas. But actually He was not fighting. So Balarama also did not fight, and in order to avoid any parties, He went to holy places at that time. He was traveling all over India from different holy places, one place to another. So when He returned, He had some sympathy with Duryodhana. Because Duryodhana was His disciple to learn how to fight with this gada, club, naturally He was sympathetic, Balarama was sympathetic. So when He came, they were..., fighting was going on. So just to show Him respect, they stopped fighting and everyone was silent. Because the Pandavas knew that Balarama was sympathetic with Duryodhana, and if He takes the side of Duryodhana, then everything will be spoiled, because He is the Supreme Person. But He did not do so. He advised them, "My dear Duryodhana, I know you are a great fighter. You have got strength. You have learned, you know the art of fighting. But you are not so strong as Bhima." And He advised Bhima, "My dear Bhima, you have got the strength of ten thousand elephants. Naturally you are superiorally stronger. So he knows the art better than you, and you are bodily stronger than him. So there will be no decision. The fighting will go on. Can you not stop? Because there will not be decision. The fighting will go on. Unless one is dead, the fighting will go on. So what is the use? Nobody will be victorious. The fighting will go on. Better stop."

But they remained silent. Silent means they did not like the idea. Because Bhima had many old grudges against Duryodhana, because when Draupadi was being insulted, they had to sit down silent, no protest. There were so many incidences -- rivalry, insult and counterinsult. So they took the opportunity of feeding the old grudge by fighting. Everyone was determined, "I must kill." Duryodhana was determined to kill Bhima, and Bhima was determined to kill. So when they did not listen to the instruction of Baladeva, then Baladeva left the place. He went to Dvaraka, back. Of course, Krsna was there, because Krsna was to give hint to Bhima how to kill Duryodhana. So Duryodhana, by the blessings of his mother, his whole body became iron-like solid. So by beating by the Bhima, it was not easy. So the story is that Gandhari, the mother of Duryodhana, she was great chaste woman. Because her husband was blind, she used to remain as blind woman covering the eyes. But she had some power. Chaste woman, anyone who sticks to the regulative principles, he gets a power, spiritual or material. He gets power. A brahmacari gets power if he follows brahmacarya. Everyone, if we follow the prescribed rules and regulations, automatically you become powerful.

So Gandhari had some power. So her eldest son, Duryodhana, was advised to see the mother naked. She advised, "My dear son, tomorrow morning when you come to offer your obeisances to me, you come naked. I shall see you and you will be solidified just like iron." So he was going naked and Krsna saw. So He asked him, "Where you are going?" "This is the... I am going to see my mother." "How is that? You are going naked? At least you have some langota(?). This is not good." So he took the instruction of Krsna and covered the private part with a langota. And when Gandhari saw, she saw that he was not fully naked, so she regretted, "O my dear son, I asked you to come before me naked. Why you have got this...?" "No, Krsna advised." Then she began to smile, that "My attempt is failure." So Krsna knew it, that part which was covered, that was not turned iron. The other parts turned into iron on account of seeing by Gandhari. So in this fight Krsna hinted Bhima that "You strike here. That part is not ironized." Although it is against the regulative principle to strike the opponent party below this waist, Krsna advised that "Unless you transgress this law, you cannot kill him." So he was stroken below the waist, and he was not killed, but his waist was broken. Therefore it is said vrkodaraviddha-gadabhimarsa. Then he died. This is mentioned here.

So bhagnoru-dande. Bhagna uru. Uru-danda was broken. Bhagnoru-dande dhrtarastra-putre. Dhrtarastra-putra, Duryodhana was dhrtarastra-putra. At that time, Drauni, his master was Duryodhana. A brahmana became a servant of ksatriya, that is degradation. A brahmana cannot become servant. Nobody can become servant. Only the sudras can become servant. Brahmana never becomes servant. They are instructed, satyam samo damas titiksa arjavam jnanam vijnanam astikyam brahma-karma svabhava-jam. This is brahmana's qualification. They will train the brahmacaris and the grhasthas how to become perfect, discipline. First discipline is truthfulness. A brahmana will never speak lies. That is the first qualification. So who is going to take training in that way? Nobody is interested. This is Kali-yuga. We are trying to train people "No illicit sex, no meat-eating, no gambling, no intoxication." Still, there are some failures. And if we teach in our institution, "Please do not speak lies," people will laugh: "What is this nonsense? Nowadays is it possible to remain in this society without speaking lies?" This is the position. This is called Kali-yuga. Nobody is interested to be trained up as a brahmana. Nobody is interested to be trained up as a ksatriya, neither as a vaisya. They are all sudras. Therefore it is said, kalau sudra-sambhavah. There is no training. It is very very difficult to train them to become purified by training. These statuses of life were different status of training so that ultimately one can become brahmana, and when he's fully trained up as a brahmana then he transcends the brahmana's position, and he becomes a Vaisnava.

So to become Vaisnava is not so easy thing. One has to become brahmana, then when he surpasses the stages of becoming brahmana then he becomes a Vaisnava. Suddha-sattva. Sattvam visuddham vasudeva-sabditam. Then Krsna is born. When one comes to the Vaisnava stage, then he can understand what is Krsna. Just like Krsna was born of Vasudeva. Similarly, when one comes to the stage of Vasudeva... Vasudeva means perfect Vaisnava. Do you think Krsna accepts somebody as father, an ordinary man? No. He is perfect Vaisnava. Krsna accepts somebody as mother... Who is His mother, father? Nobody can be. He is the adi-purusa. He's original person. Who can become His father, mother? But He accepts, when He descends to exhibit His lila... Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata tadatmanam [Bg. 4.7] [break] ...janma karma ca me divyam [Bg. 4.9]. Don't take ordinarily: "Oh, Krsna is born of a father, Vasudeva, and of a mother, Devaki. That's all. We know He was born." No. One has to learn who is His father, who is His mother, how He accepts His devotee as father. That is called yo janati tattvatah. This is tattvatah.

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascin mam vetti tattvatah
[Bg. 7.3]

To understand Krsna tattvatah, in truth, that is not so easy. It is possible for a man out of many millions of men. Manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati.

So that tattvatah one can understand simply by pure devotional service. If you become a pure devotee, without any contamination -- unalloyed devotee -- then Krsna reveals: "This is I am. I am like this." You cannot speculate upon Krsna. That is not possible. Nayam atma pravacanena labhyo na bahuna srutena na medhaya. You cannot understand Krsna simply because you are a learned Sanskrit scholar. You are a rascal. Krsna is not so easy to be understood by scholarship or Sanskrit language. Don't commit this mistake. Krsna is understood by a person to whom Krsna reveals. That is understanding. Nayam atma. This is completely said: Nayam atma, nayam atma pravacanena labhyo na medhaya. Because you have got a fertile brain, therefore you'll be able to understand Krsna? No. Na bahuna srutena. Oh, because you are very good scholar, you have studied so much... No. If Krsna reveals to you, then you'll be able. That revelation is possible when you are a devotee. Otherwise, it is not possible. Nayam atma pravacanena labhyah.

So we have to wait for that opportunity when Krsna reveals. How that revelation is possible? Atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih [BRS. 1.2.234]. By sense perception or sense speculation you cannot. Namadi. Even the chanting of Hare Krsna mantra you cannot understand. Atah sri-krsna-namadi. Nama, rupa, lila, parikara, vaisistya..., everything. You cannot understand with these blunt senses. Then how? Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva sphuraty adah. When you engage your senses, purified senses. Sevonmukhe. Purified senses means when the senses are engaged in the service of the Lord -- everything -- then you can understand Krsna. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva sphuraty adah. Krsna is not your servant: "Krsna, I want to see You." No. That you cannot see. Svayam eva sphuraty adah. When He's pleased, when He sees that "Here is a pure devotee," then He reveals.

So the Pandavas were pure devotees; therefore Krsna took his side and they became victorious in the fight. And Krsna is always ready to give protection to His devotees. Kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati. His sudarsana-cakra always protects His devotees. That is the position of devotee.

Thank you very much. (end)

"Great Books For A Gross Age"

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.5.11
London, September 12, 1973

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: In the Srimad-Bhagavatam, there is a description of the age of Kali. Age of..., this is age of Kali. According to Vedic understanding, there are four ages: Satya-yuga, Dvapara-yuga, Treta-yuga, and Kali-yuga. This age is called Kali-yuga. It has begun about five thousand years ago, after the battle of Kuruksetra. The duration of this Kali-yuga is estimated four hundred thousand..., four hundred and twenty-seven thousands of years. Out of that, we have passed only five thousand years. So the symptom of the human being in this age is that prayenalpayusa: people will become very short duration of life. It is said that time, at the end of Kali-yuga, the, if somebody lives for twenty to thirty years, he will be considered as very old man. So gradually the food grains like rice, wheat, milk, and sugar will disappear. In this way, in the Kali-yuga, prayenalpayusah sabhya kalav asmin yuge janah. In this age, people will be of short duration of life; manda, very slow; sumanda-matayah, accepting some rubbish theology. Mandah sumanda-matayo manda-bhagyah [SB 1.1.10], almost all of them are unfortunate. Manda-bhagya hy upadrutah: over and above that, they will be disturbed, especially by lack of rain, lack of..., scarcity of food grains, and overtaxed by the government, so much so that people will give up their hearth and home and go to the forest and hills in disappointment and confusion. So these are the symptoms of Kali-yuga, gradually degrading.

So this is also recommended, prayena... In the Srimad-Bhagavatam, in another chapter, Twelfth Canto, it is said, kaler dosa-nidhe rajan. These instructions were given by Sukadeva Gosvami to Maharaja Pariksit. So he addressed the king, "My dear king, in this age the faults are like the ocean," kaler dosa-nidhe rajan. Dosa-nidhe. Nidhi means ocean. "There are so many faults in this age that it can be accepted as the ocean of faults." Kaler dosa-nidhe rajan asti hy eko mahan gunah. "There is one great opportunity. Although it is full of faulty things, still there is one hope. That hope is," kirtanad eva krsnasya mukta-sangah param vrajet, "if one simply chants the holy name of Krsna, Hare Krsna, then gradually he becomes purified from the contamination of this age." Kirtanad eva krsnasya mukta-sangah: "He becomes free from the contamination of this age." It is just like vaccine. In contagious disease, there is vaccine, cholera. So this mantra, maha-mantra, this is not ordinary sound. This is spiritual. So by chanting this mantra -- Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare -- one becomes free from the contamination of this age. And not only he becomes free from the contamination of this age, but param vrajet, he goes back to the spiritual world.

We have no information in this age, at the present time, what is that spiritual world, but they are all stated in the Bhagavad-gita: paras tasmat tu bhavo 'nyo 'vyakto 'vyaktat sanatanah [Bg. 8.20]. Everything is there in the Bhagavad-gita. Bhagavad-gita is the preliminary study of spiritual life, ABCD of spiritual life. The people cannot understand even the ABCD of Bhagavad-gita, and Srimad-Bhagavatam is the graduate study. So everything is there. Unfortunately it was not distributed. So our Krsna consciousness movement has started to distribute this literature, especially Srimad-Bhagavatam. We have already translated about twenty books. They are present before you, and our aim is to present to the human society sixty books. Still translation is going on. So our request to the publishers and book sellers, that "Let this literature be distributed properly. People will be benefited." Because, after all, each and every human being is a spiritual being. He is not this body. That is the mistake of the present civilization. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke [SB 10.84.13]. Atma-buddhi, "self." People, everyone thinks that this body, "I am this body." If I ask any gentleman, "What you are?" He'll say, "I am Mr. Such-and-such. I am born in this country," "I am American," "I am Englishman," "I am Indian." These are all bodily description. But basically I am not this body. This is called illusion. You have got practical experience. When one man's father or son or any relative dies, he cries, "Oh, my son has gone away," "My father has gone away." Then, "Your father is lying there on the bed. How do you say that ‘My father has gone away'? " That means the actual father, he has never seen. He has seen the body only. And on this bodily conception of life, everything is being manipulated. This is called illusion. Therefore, in the Vedic literature it is stated,

yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke
sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih
yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicij
janesv abhijnesu sa eva go-kharah
[SB 10.84.13]

A person who is in the bodily concept of life, and thinking a bodily designation as everything, nationalism, or ..., bhauma ijya-dhih. Bhauma, "on the land," ijya-dhih... The whole world is going on, worshiping the land in which he is born. But he does not know that he took birth in many lands. Not only in this land, in other planet also. But he does not know which land (is) his own land. This is called illusion, yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dha..., sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih.

So the world is going on under misconception of self, that "I am this body." In the Bhagavad-gita you'll find, the first instruction given by Krsna:

dehino 'smin yatha dehe
kaumaram yauvanam jara
tatha dehantara-praptir
dhiras tatra na muhyati
[Bg. 2.13]

Asmin dehe, in this body, there is the proprietor of the body, dehi, who possesses this body. But there is no information. Nobody knows. There is no education on this point: what is that proprietor of this body. They are simply going on, like cats and dogs. Cats and... If you try to instruct a cat or dog, "My dear dog, you are not these bodies," he'll not understand. He is so grossly in ignorance, it is very difficult for him to understand that he is not this body. But human being, although at the present moment they are grossly ignorant for want of spiritual education, still, because he is human being, he can be educated. He can be revived to his original consciousness, which is called Krsna consciousness.

So we are trying our bit, almost single-handed, although the important literatures are there, Vedic literatures, four Vedas, Vedanta-sutra, eighteen Puranas, hundred and eight Upanisads, then Ramayana, Mahabharata, so many, full of knowledge, transcendental knowledge. They can be distributed all over the world. But there was no organized attempt. We are just begun from 1966, this movement, Hare Krsna movement, or Krsna consciousness movement, distributing this literature. Through literature, of course, we are very hopeful. Our literatures are selling. In London also, they sell at least $200, er, pounds, in the street. Similarly, in New York, in Los Angeles, every city we are selling about thirty-to forty thousand rupees' worth books daily. People are appreciating. But if the publishers and the book sellers also help us in this movement, then people will be very much benefited. That is our request. We have come to this, I mean to say, bookseller's office to request... Of course, we have no means to advertise very much, but our advertisement is the sankirtana movement. We go from city to city, street to street, to invoke, invoke the spiritual consciousness of that. There is already there. In the Caitanya-caritamrta, it is said,

nitya-siddha krsna-prema ‘sadhya' kabhu naya
sravanadi-suddha-citte karaye udaya
[Cc. madhya 22.107]

It is simply awakened. This spiritual consciousness, Krsna consciousness, is already there in everyone. Otherwise how this European, American, and other foreign country boys and girls, they are taking? It is already there. Simply it has to be awakened by this transcendental vibration.

That transcendental vibration... Just like we are chanting, this is one vibration. And these books are bigger vibration. This is... This, when we chant Hare Krsna mantra, a few yards, people can hear, "Here is Hare Krsna." But this, my Guru Maharaja used to say, that "This is brhad-mrdanga." Mrdanga, that drum, you have seen, that is small mrdanga. If I beat on this drum, maybe a few yards, people can heard from few yards. But this is... The books are distributed, it can go from country to country, from continent to continent, actually it is so happening. So our only appeal is that all book sellers, all publishers, may come forward and cooperate with us and distribute the transcendental literature in the unique form. They will find something sublime, and we'll be benefited.

Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. (end)

"Supreme Deceiver And Lover"

73/09/12 London, Bhagavad-gita 2.39

Pradyumna: (leads chanting, etc.)

Translation: "Thus far I have declared to you the analytical knowledge of sankhya philosophy. Now listen to the knowledge of yoga whereby one works without fruitive result. O son of Prtha, when you act by such intelligence, you can free yourself from the bondage of works."

Prabhupada:

esa te 'bhihita sankhye
buddhir yoge tv imam srnu
buddhya yukto yaya partha
karma-bandham prahasyasi
[Bg. 2.39]

Karma-bandham. You act something, and there is reaction. That is called karma-bandha. We can understand very easily. Whatever you act, there is reaction. Good act or bad act... There are two things. So if while in this body we act piously, then our future is very good. If we act impiously, then our future is not very good. So actually we should act piously, not impiously. That is human life. We should know what kind of action we should do. In the Sixteenth Chapter of Bhagavad-gita you'll find pravrttim ca nivrttim ca na vidur asura-janah: "Those who are asuras, they do not know what kind of action should be done and what kind of action should not be done." Not that "Anything I like at my whims..." That is not... At least for human being, he should not do. Even in the state laws, if you act whimsically, whatever you like, you'll be liable to so many difficulties, and what to speak of spiritual life?

So Krsna has described so far... Sankhya yoga means analytical study of the soul and the body. He has very nicely... So this analytical study of the soul and body means so far, He has described the activities of the body. That is sankhya yoga. Just like a medical man has got full analysis -- not full, to a portion -- of this body, the anatomy, the physiology. They have studied how the veins are working, how different secretions are transforming into blood, how the heart is working. This is called analytical study. So esa te abhihita sankhye.

So far the body is concerned, that is now fully analyzed. Now buddhir yoge tv imam, another department of knowledge, buddhi-yoga. Buddhi-yoga means spiritual life. That is buddhi-yoga. Just like you'll find in the Tenth Chapter. Krsna says to Arjuna, buddhi-yogam dadami tam. When there is talk between the spirit, supreme spirit, Krsna and the individual spirit, subordinate spirit, the living entity... Krsna is the Supreme Being, and we are subordinate being. So these people at the present moment, they do not know. But we have to take instruction from Vedas. Nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). The Supreme Being, He is eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman. He is supplying the necessities of life, kaman, whatever we require. There are so many things for birds, beasts, human being, different types of fruits, flowers, milk. Everything is being supplied by Krsna. Therefore He's Supreme Being. How He can be supreme? Just like in a family the father is considered to be supreme. Why? Because he takes care of the whole family, he is supreme. Similarly, the Supreme Person, Krsna, He takes care of the whole creation, material and spiritual, innumerable universes, and therefore He's sup... So when we act according to the direction of the Supreme... Because we are subordinate. This is our position. A subordinate position is that he must act according to the direction of the master or the supreme. That is natural. Everyone is acting like that. So that is called buddhi-yoga. When you act according to the direction of the Supreme, Krsna, or His representative, that is called buddhi-yoga. That is real... Buddhi means intelligence, and yoga means linking, connecting. In the Tenth Chapter you'll find,

tesam satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te
[Bg. 10.10]

There is the buddhi-yoga, one word, and here is also the buddhi-yoga. So what is that buddhi-yoga? Krsna says, tesam satata-yuktanam: "Persons who are twenty-four-hours engaged," satata... Satata means always. Engaged. What kind of engagement? Bhajatam priti-purvakam. This engagement means always trying to render some service to the Lord. How? Priti-purvakam: "with love and faith." Not that "Oh, I have to do it? All right, let me do." No. "Oh, I have to do it? Let me do it nicely." Unless there is love, you cannot do it nicely, any matter. In the material world also, unless you have got some attachment for something, you cannot act it very nicely. Just like a musician. Because one has got a good attachment for music, he tries to perform it very perfectly. So love is the basis. Similarly, when you serve Krsna, if you have no love for Krsna, you cannot serve Him very nicely. And Krsna also does not accept your service if it is not done in great love and affection. That is the basic principle. Krsna does not require your service. He is self-sufficient. He has got many servants anywhere and everywhere. So Krsna does not require our service. It is our interest. If we render service to Krsna, then we become happy. That is the profit. Tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam [Bg. 10.10].

Just like you'll find in another verse Krsna says, patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati [Bg. 9.26]. Yo me bhaktya prayacchati: "Anyone who offers Me in love and faith a little flower, a little water, a little fruit," patram puspam phalam toyam... Patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati. This is the real point. Krsna, the Supreme Person who is giving all the necessities of all the living entities... He is actually the provider, maintainer of everyone. So why He is asking a little fruit, flower and water from you? Is He hungry? No. Yo me bhaktya prayacchati. Just to induce you again to love Krsna. That is the point. Because your, this material condition is bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19], subjected to birth, death, old age, disease, and so many other material conditions. You have fallen in this condition because you have forgotten Krsna. Just like last night so many people came to discuss with us, but they are not interested in talking of Krsna. They are interested how their sense gratification will be disturbed by starting this temple. That is their concern. Here we have come to preach about Krsna. They did not ask anything about Krsna, "What is this philosophy? What is this Krsna's philosophy?" No. They are simply interested in their own sense gratification. That's all. How their sense gratification will be disturbed -- they are concerned in that way. This is the position of the material world. Everyone is simply interested in sense gratification. That's all. There is no question of asking "What is God? What I am? What is this world?" Actually, these should be the questions of human life. Athato brahma jijnasa. They should be engaged always in inquiring about the Supreme Being, the Absolute Truth. That is their only business. But you see the whole world. They are simply busy how to satisfy their senses. This is the cause of fall down.

krsna-bahirmukha hana bhoga vancha kare
nikata-stha maya tare japatiya dhare
(Prema-vivarta)

There are many quotations. Because we have forgotten Krsna, therefore we are now under the clutches of maya.

So we have forgotten Krsna, we are suffering, but because we are part and parcel of Krsna, Krsna comes to canvass that "Why you are suffering? You just surrender unto Me. I'll give you all protection." No, they'll not take. They'll not take. Therefore, when one is trained up to, how to surrender to Krsna, that is called devotional service, practice, practicing. And when, actually, one is very sincere to serve Krsna... Krsna is within everyone's heart. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. So He can understand whether you are sincerely serving or with some motive you are serving. Even with a motive you serve Krsna, it will never go in vain. Krsna is so kind. Just like Putana. Putana wanted to serve Krsna by feeding Krsna with her breast, but the purpose was the breast was poison, so Krsna would suck the milk and He would die. There is a different motive. But still, Krsna is so kind that He thought that "This rascal Putana, she wanted to kill Me, but she does not know that I am not a person to be killed, but still, although the motive was to kill Me, but she has served Me to suck her breast. I have drunk her milk. So she is My mother. So she is My mother. Never mind she came with a motive."

So this is the Krsna consciousness benefit. Of course, we should not have any more... Kamsa. Kamsa, just like. He was simply thinking of Krsna. He was Krsna conscious fully, always thinking of Krsna. But the motive was to kill. So still, Kamsa got liberation because he was constantly thinking of Krsna. But ac... That is not bhakti. Bhakti is the same thinking of Krsna -- favorably. Anukulyena krsnanusilanam [Cc. Madhya 19.167]. That is bhakti. To think of Krsna as enemy, that is not required. One may think, but a devotee, how can he think of Krsna as enemy? He thinks of Krsna as friend, as son, as master, as lover. A devotee thinks like that, whereas a demon or an enemy of Krsna, he's always thinking of... This is the difference between demon and devotee. Demon is thinking how to wipe out, how to banish Krsna, how to kill Krsna. They don't want Krsna. That is demonic. So therefore they do not know that a demonic person is always suffering. That is due to his forgetfulness of Krsna. But because he is demon, he is continuing the business. Therefore they do not know... Na te viduh... They... That is also... Na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum [SB 7.5.31]. Pravrttim ca nivrttim ca na vidur asura-janah. Asura-jana, those who are asuras, they do not know what to do and what not to do. Therefore one has to learn how to live, what to know, what to forget. Every... Every educational or progressive method has got do's and do not's. So the asuras, they do not know what they should do and what they should not do. That is asura. And a devotee, he knows what to do and what not to do. There is no illicit sex. That is "do not." But there is "do" also, that "If you want sex life, then get yourself married according to religious principle and get a wife and beget nice children." That is "do." And "No illicit sex," that is "do not." Side by side. "You do not take intoxicants" -- that is "do not." But "You take Krsna prasadam and be intoxicated with Krsna's love" -- that is "do." Similarly, "You do not indulge in gambling, but you indulge in gambling." What is that gambling? That gambling is "Dedicate your life to Krsna and see the result." That is also gambling. That is also gambling, because everyone is engaged in his own business, but if he's advised, "You give up this business. You take to this Krsna business," that is also gambling because he does not know what will happen.

So everything has "do" and "do not." So we have to give up this "do not" and accept the "do," positive and negative. Then... Therefore, in the Tenth Chapter it is said, tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam [Bg. 10.10]. By some way or other, who has become engaged in devotional service twenty-four hours, satata -- satata means twenty-four hours -- satata-yuktanam, with faith -- "Now I am engaged in Krsna's service. Krsna will be... Actually He'll be merciful upon me. He'll deliver me from this miserable condition of material life" -- tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam... [Bg. 10.10]. So Krsna is within. You cannot deceive Krsna. That is not possible. Krsna is the Supreme. If you are deceiver, Krsna is also the supreme deceiver. And if you are lover, then Krsna is the supreme lover. Ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham [Bg. 4.11]. You deal with Krsna. As you deal, He'll also... He reciprocates. That is Krsna.

So Krsna is describing now buddhi-yoga. Buddhi-yoga means bhakti-yoga. This, this word, buddhi-yoga... Buddhi means intelligence. One who is very intelligent, he can take to Krsna consciousness. Therefore bhakti-yoga's another name is buddhi-yoga. Buddhi-yoga. Because buddhi-yoga... There are many verses in the Bhagavad-gita, you'll find. Just like Krsna says,

bahunam janmanam ante
jnanavan mam prapadyate
vasudevah sarvam iti
sa mahatma sudurlabhah
[Bg. 7.19]

Krsna says, "After many, many births' endeavor..." Because everyone is trying to be happy. That is the struggle for existence. Why this struggle? To become happy. So sometimes they are karmis, sometimes they are jnanis, sometimes they are yogis, sometimes... As soon as they become bhakta, that is success. But so long he is not bhakta but otherwise, karmis, jnanis... Generally they are divided: karmis, jnanis, yogis... Therefore Rupa Gosvami has said,

bhukti-mukti-sprha yavat
pisaci hrdi vartate
tavad bhakti-sukhasyatra
katham abhyudayo bhavet

"So long in one's heart there is a pisaci..." Pisaci means, what is called, a witch. Yes. The witch is there, pisaci. What is that pisaci? Bhukti-mukti-siddhi. Bhukti means karmi, to, one who wants to enjoy this material world by working. That is called bhukti. Bhokta. "I want to enjoy." Everyone is trying that. Struggle for existence. Everyone is trying to... "I want to enjoy this material world to the fullest extent." So their struggle going on, competition. That is called bhukti. And another? Mukti. Mukti means those who are disappointed. Disappointed must be because nobody can be happy here with this karmi plan. That is not possible. So he will be disappointed. But disappointed when? After many, many births' struggle for existence, he'll be disappointed. That's a fact. Therefore Krsna says, bahunam janmanam ante [Bg. 7.19]. He continues to be, become karmi and sometimes jnani, sometimes yogi, to become happy, but he'll be confused. He'll be defeated. Nature is so strong. Therefore Krsna says, bahunam janmanam ante: "After many, many births of this struggle" -- sometimes karmi, sometimes jnani, sometimes yogi, sometimes something else -- "when one comes to be really wise," jnanavan mam prapadyate, "he surrenders unto Me." How he surrenders? Blindly? No. Vasudevah sarvam iti [Bg. 7.19]. He at that time understands that "Krsna is everything." Therefore... That is a big mahatma. Sa mahatma sudurlabhah: "It is very difficult to find out such a great person." Therefore intelligent person, if he sees... Dekhe sekhara(?). If I understand that "This person has surrendered to Krsna after many, many births. If that is the ultimate goal, why not myself surrender immediately?" That is buddhi-yoga. "If one has to come to this point for perfection of life, why not my life be perfected in this life? Why I shall wait for many, many births?" And that is buddhi-yoga, intelligent yoga. Krsna yei bhaje, sei bada catura. Unless one is exceptionally intelligent, he cannot take to Krsna consciousness. This is buddhi-yoga.

Therefore Krsna has described in sankhya-yoga that "This is your duty. You are ksatriya. You have... Why you are rejecting fighting?" In this way, in so many ways... "The soul is immortal, the body is perishable, so your grandfather or your kinsmen, they'll not die." So this is analytical study from the material point of view. And as soon as one comes to the point of serving Krsna with love, without any understanding... Just like fire. Fire, you accept it. Without studying fire, analytical, if you touch fire, it will act. It will act. It doesn't require to study fire, how, what is the composition of fire. This is knowledge, of course. But if you... Just like gopis in Vrndavana. They did not study what is Krsna. They did not care even to study. But they wanted to love Krsna. That is their only qualification. They were ordinary village girls. Similarly, the cowherds boy. They were tending cows. They had no Vedanta knowledge or any higher education, not very nicely cultured gentlemen, village cowherds boy, cowherds girl, but they did not know any other business than to love Krsna. That is perfection. Jnana-sunya, without any knowledge. They did not know. They... They saw Narayana: "Oh, here is Narayana. All right. I offer you..." But there is no love. Love is for Krsna. Even Narayana, four-handed Narayana, there is no love for. They have got respect. You can offer respect to anyone, even you have no love. But love is different thing. That was... That is the typical examples in Vrndavana. That is the ultimate goal of buddhi-yoga.

Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. (End)
