Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: (sings) Govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami **. (audience responds) Somebody is helping him? Yes, it is all... So we are interested in capturing the original person. (chuckles) We are not interested with any subordinate. Govindam adi-purusam. But if one can capture the original person, then he captures everyone. Just like the same example. In the Vedas it is said in the Upanisad, yasmin vijnate sarvam evam vijnatam bhavanti. If you can understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead or the Absolute Truth, then you understand everything. There is no need of understanding separately. Yasmin vijnate sarvam etam vijnatam bhavanti. Similarly, in the Bhagavad-gita also it is said,

yam labdhva caparam labham
manyate nadhikam tatah
yasmin sthito na duhkhena
gurunapi vicalyate
 [Bg. 6.20-23]

Now we are, everyone, searching after some standard of life where we will have no anxiety. That is the aim of everyone. Why we are struggling? We are trying to approach a certain point. Just like two parties playing on football, they are, each one of them, trying to approach the goal. That is victory. So everyone is trying to gain something, according to different position, according to different idea. Not everyone is searching after the same thing. Somebody searching after material pleasure, somebody searching after intoxication, somebody is searching after sex, somebody is searching after money, somebody is searching after knowledge, somebody is searching after so many things. But there is one thing. If we can get that, attain to that perfection, then we shall be satisfied and we shall say that "We do not want anything." Svamin krtartho 'smi varam na yace [Cc. Madhya 22.42]. There are many instances. So there is like that, and that is Krsna. If you can simply understand Krsna, then your knowledge is perfect, you understand everything. You understand science, you understand mathematics, you understand chemistry, physics, astronomy, philosophy, literature, everything. It is so nice. So Bhagavata says therefore that samsiddhir hari-tosanam [SB 1.2.13]. Whatever department of knowledge or whatever department of activities you are engaged in, it doesn't matter. But if you can find out the Supreme by your pursuit of knowledge, that is your perfection. You are a scientist, all right, it doesn't matter. By your scientific research work you find out the Supreme. Then it is your perfection. You are businessman? Oh. With your money just find out the Supreme. You are a lover? Just find out the supreme lover. You are after taste, aesthetic, or... Atheistic not; aesthetic sense, taste, beauty, if you find out the Supreme, your searching after beauty will be satisfied. Everything. Krsna, that is Krsna. Krsna means all-attractive. You are searching after something. If you find Krsna then you'll see yes, your goal is attained. Therefore His name is Krsna.

Krsna means "all-attractive." He is attractive to the lover, He's attractive to the wise, He's attractive to the politician, He's attractive to the scientist, He is attractive to the rogues. Rogues also. When Krsna entered the arena of Kamsa, different kinds of people saw Him differently. Those who were invited from Vrndavana, they were young girls. They saw Krsna, "Oh, the most beautiful person." Those who were wrestlers, they saw Krsna as thunderbolt. They also saw Krsna, but they say, "Oh, here is thunderbolt." Just like however strong you may be, if there is falldown of thunderbolt everything is finished. So they saw Krsna as thunderbolt, the wrestlers. Yes. And the elderly persons, elderly ladies, they saw Krsna as loving child. So you can establish relationship with Krsna any way. There are twelve kinds of rasas, humor. Just like sometimes we want to see a very pathetic scene in some drama, some ghastly scene. Somebody is murdering somebody and we take pleasure in seeing that. There are certain kinds of person... There are different kinds of sporting. One of our student in Montreal, he was saying that his father took pleasure in bull fighting in Spain. When the bull is killed by fighting, he was taking pleasure. So different kinds of men. One person is seeing, "It is horrible," another person is enjoying, "Oh, it is very nice." You see? So Krsna can accommodate. If you want to love horrible things, Krsna can present yourself as Nrsimhadeva, "Ah."(laughter -- Haribol) Yes. And if you want to see Krsna as very loving friend, He is Vamsi-dhari, Vrndavana-vihari. If you want Krsna as loving child, then He's Gopala. If you want child as loving friend, he's Arjuna. Just like Arjuna and Krsna. So there are twelve kinds of humors. Krsna can be accommodated with all the humors; therefore His name is Akhila-rasamrta-sindhu. Akhila-rasamrta-sindhu. Akhila means universal; rasa means mellow, humor; and the ocean. Just like if you try to find out water and if you go before the Pacific Ocean, oh, unlimited water. There is no comparison how much water is there. (chuckling) Similarly, if you want something and if you approach Krsna, you'll find unlimited supply, unlimited supply, just like ocean. Therefore it is said in the Bhagavad-gita, yam labdhva caparam labham manyate nadhikam tatah. If anyone can approach or gain that Supreme Absolute, then he will be satisfied and he will say, "Oh, I have no more hankering. I have got everything complete, in full satisfaction." Yam labdhva caparam labham manyate nadhikam tatah yasmin sthite. And if one is situated in that transcendental position, then what happens? Gurunapi duhkhena na vicalyate [Bg. 6.20-23]. If there is very severe test of distress, he's not, I mean to say, faltering.

There are many instances in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Just like in the Bhagavad-gita the Pandavas were placed in so many distressed condition, but they were never faltering. They never asked Krsna, "My dear Krsna, You are my friend. You are our friend, the Pandavas. Why we are undergoing so much severe test of difficulties?" No. They never. Because they were confident that "In spite of all these difficulties, we shall come out victorious because Krsna is there. Because Krsna is there." This confidence. This is called saranagati, surrender. There are six points of surrender unto Krsna. One point of surrender is to believe that "Krsna will protect me." Just like a small child has got full faith in his mother: "My mother is there. There is no danger." Confident. I have seen it. Everyone. I have got... I'll narrate one practical experience. In Calcutta, in my younger days, I was traveling in tram, and my youngest son, he was with me. He was only two years old, or two or two and a half years old. So the conductor, out of joke, asked him, "Give me your fare." So he first of all said like this: "I have no money." So the conductor said, "Then you get down." He immediately said, "Oh, here is my father." (makes some gesture) (laughter) You see. "You cannot ask me to get down. My father is here." You see? So this is the psychology. If you have approached Krsna, then even the greatest fear will not agitate you. That is a fact. So such a thing is Krsna. Try to achieve this greatest boon, Krsna. And what Krsna says? Kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati [Bg. 9.31]. "My dear Kaunteya, son of Kunti, Arjuna, declare in the world that My devotees will never be vanquished." Will never be vanquished. Kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati.

Similarly, there are many passages in the Bhagavad-gita. I'm quoting from Bhagavad-gita because this book is very popular all over the world, and... Try to understand, read this book, very valuable book of knowledge. So Krsna says,

aham sarvasya prabhavo
mattah sarvam pravartate
iti matva bhajante mam
budha bhava-samanvitah
 [Bg. 10.8]

Who can worship Krsna? That is described here, that budha. Budha means most intelligent person. Bodha, bodha means knowledge, and budha means one who is wise, full of knowledge. Everyone is after knowledge. Here you have got this Washington University. There are many students. They have come here to acquire knowledge. So one who has acquired the perfection of knowledge or the highest platform of knowledge, he is called budha. So not only budha but bhava-samanvitah. Bhava means ecstasy. One must be very learned and wise, at the same time he must feel ecstasy spiritually. "Such person," Krsna says, iti matva bhajante mam. "Such persons worships Me or loves Me." One who is very intelligent and one who is transcendentally very full of ecstasy, such person loves Krsna or worships Krsna. Why? Because iti matva, "by understanding this." What is this? Aham sarvasya prabhavo [Bg. 10.8], "I am the origin of everything, sarvasya." Anything you bring, that is, if you go on, search out, then you will find ultimately it is Krsna.

The Vedanta also says the same thing. What is Brahman? Athato brahma jijnasa. This life, this human life... We have now... In other life we have enjoyed sense pleasure to the fullest extent. What we can enjoy in this human life? In other life... Of course, according to Darwin's theory, just prior to this human life there was monkey life. So the monkey... You have no experience. In India we have got experience. Each and every monkey has got at least hundred girls with him. Hundred, one hundred. So what we able to enjoy? Every, each, they have got party, and each party, one monkey has got a least fifty, sixty, not less than twenty-five. So a hog's life, they have got also dozens of... Dozens. And they have no distinction, "Who is my mother, who is my sister, who is my relative." You see? So they're enjoying. So do you mean to say that human life is meant like that -- like monkeys and hogs and cats and dogs? Is that perfection of human life, to satisfy sense gratification? No. That we have enjoyed in various forms of life. Now? The Vedanta says, athato brahma jijnasa. This life is for inquiring and understanding Brahman. What is that Brahman? Isvarah paramah brahma or parama, isvarah paramah krsnah [Bs. 5.1]. And Krsna is Para-brahma. Brahman, we are all Brahman, but He is Para-brahman, the Supreme Brahman. Isvarah paramah krsnah [Bs. 5.1]. Just like you are all Americans, but your President Johnson is the supreme American. That is natural. Vedas says that the supreme of everyone is God. Nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). Who is God? He is the most perfect eternal, He is the most perfect living force. That is God. Eko bahunam vidadhati kaman.

Eko bahunam vidadhati kaman. The meaning is that one living force is supplying all the demands of all other living entities. Just like in a family the father is supplying the necessities of the wife, the children, the servant, a small family. Similarly, you expand it: the government or the state or the king is supplying the necessities of all the citizens. But everything is incomplete. Everything is incomplete. You can supply your family, you can supply your society, you can supply your country, but you cannot supply everyone. But there are millions and trillions of living entities. Who is supplying food? Who is supplying hundreds and thousands of ants within the hole in your room? Who is supplying food? When you go to the green lake there are thousands of ducks. Who is taking care of them? But they are living. There are millions of sparrows, birds, beasts, elephants. At one time he eats hundred pounds. Who is supplying food? Not only here, but there are many millions and trillions of planets and universes everywhere. That is God. Nityo nityanam eko bahunam vidadhati kaman. Everyone is dependent on Him, and He is supplying all the necessities, all the necessities. Everything complete. Just like this planet, everything is complete.

purnam idam purnam adah
purnat purnam udacyate
purnasya purnam adaya
purnam evavasisyate
 [Iso Invocation]

Every planet is so made that it is complete in itself. The water is there, reserved in the seas and oceans. That water is taken away by the sunshine. Not only here, in other planets also, the same process is going on. It is transformed into cloud, then distributed all over the land, and there is growing of vegetables, fruits and plants, everything. So everything is complete arrangement. That we have to understand, that who has made this complete arrangement everywhere. The sun is rising in due time, the moon is rising in due time, the seasons are changing in due time. So how you can say? There is evidence in the Vedas there is God. In every scripture, every great personality, devotee, representative of God... Just like Lord Jesus Christ, he gave information of God. Although he was crucified, he never changed his opinion. So we have evidences from scripture, from Vedas, from great personality, still, if I say, "God is dead. There is no God," then what kind of man I am? This is called demon. They'll never believe it. They'll never believe... Yes. Just the opposite demon is budha. Budha means very intelligent, wise man. In the Caitanya-caritamrta it is said, therefore, krsna ye bhaje se bada catura. Anyone who becomes attracted by Krsna and loves Him... Worshiping means loving. In the beginning it is worshiping, but at the end it is love. Worshiping.

So iti matva bhajante mam budha. Anyone who is wise, who is intelligent, who knows that Krsna is the cause of all causes...

isvarah paramah krsnah
sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah
anadir adir govindah
sarva-karana-karanam
 [Bs. 5.1]

Sarva-karana: everything has got cause, cause and effect. So you go on finding out what is the cause of this, what is the cause of this, what is the cause of this, then you'll find Krsna. Sarva-karana-karanam. And Vedanta says, janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. You cannot say something has sprang automatically. That is foolishness. Everything has a source of generation. Everything. That is intelligence. Don't say... Just like in modern science says that "There was a chunk and there was creation -- perhaps." That is also "perhaps," you see. So this kind of knowledge is useless. You must find out. If I ask the scientist, "What is the cause of this chunk?" they cannot reply. So find out the cause, and you'll find that... If I cannot find, then we have to follow... Mahajano yena gatah sa panthah [Cc. Madhya 17.186], we have to follow the authorized acaryas. If you be Christian, just follow Jesus Christ. He says, "There is God." Then you accept there is God. He says that "God created this. He said that 'Let there be creation,' and there was creation." So we accept this, "Yes. God created." Here also in the Bhagavad-gita God says, Krsna says, aham sarvasya prabhavo [Bg. 10.8], "I am the origin." So God is the origin of creation. Sarva-karana-karanam: [Bs. 5.1] He is the cause of all causes.

So we have to take the examples of great personalities, we have to study authorized books and Vedas, and we have to follow their example; then Krsna consciousness or God realization or God consciousness is not difficult. It is very easy. There is no, I mean to say, any stumbling block on the path of your understanding what is God. Everything is there. The Bhagavad-gita is there, the Srimad-Bhagavata is there. Even you accept, your Bible is there, the Koran is there, everywhere. Without God, there cannot be any book or scripture. Nowadays, of course, they are manufacturing so many things. But in any human society the conception of God is there -- according to time, according to the people, but the idea is there. Now you have to understand, jijnasa. Therefore Vedanta-sutra says that you try to understand God by inquiry, inquiry. This inquiry is very important. In our process, adau gurvasrayam sad-dharma prcchat. One has to accept a bona fide spiritual master and he has to inquire from him, sad-dharma prcchat. Similarly, in the Srimad-Bhagavatam also says that jijnasuh sreya uttamam. "One who is inquisitive to understand the Absolute Truth, he requires a spiritual master." Tasmad gurum prapadyeta jijnasuh sreya uttamam [SB 11.3.21]. Jijnasuh means inquisitive, one who inquires. Inquiry is natural. Just like a child: with the development of his life he inquires from the parents, "Father, what it is? Mother, what it is? What it is? What it is?" This is nice. A boy, child, who is inquiring, that means he is very intelligent boy. So we should be intelligent and inquire, jijnasa. Brahma-jijnasa. This life is for brahma-jijnasa, to understand, to inquire about God. Then a life is successful. Athato brahma jijnasa. And after inquiring, inquiring, inquiring, understanding, understanding, understanding, then what is the ultimate stage? That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita: bahunam janmanam ante jnanavan mam prapadyate [Bg. 7.19]. After many, many births of inquiry, when one becomes actually a wise man, man of knowledge, then what happens? Bahunam janmanam ante jnanavan mam prapadyate: "He surrenders unto Me," Krsna says. Why? Vasudevah sarvam iti. He understands that Vasudeva, Krsna, is the cause of all causes. Sa mahatma su-durlabhah. But such kind of great soul is very rare, to understand it. Therefore Caitanya-caritamrta says, sei bado catura: he is very intelligent.

So these are the definition of intelligent person. So if we want to be intelligent, we can adopt the process how to become intelligent. But on the other hand, if we are actually intelligent, why not take this Krsna consciousness immediately and become intelligent? Without, without going to the process, you take... It is offered to you by the most magnanimous incarnation, Lord Caitanya. He's offering you, krsna-prema-pradaya te [Cc. Madhya 19.53]. He's giving you love of Krsna. Rupa Gosvami offered his obeisances to Lord Caitanya, namo maha-vadanyaya krsna-prema-pradaya te: "O my dear Lord Caitanya, You are the most charitable, magnanimous of all incarnations. Why? Because You are directly giving love of Krsna. The love of Krsna which cannot be achieved after many, many births, You are delivering cheaply, 'Take it immediately.' " Namo maha-vadanyaya krsna-prema-pradaya te krsnaya krsna-caitanya. They could understand that "You are Krsna"; otherwise it was not possible by anyone to offer Krsna-prema, love of Krsna, so cheaply. "You are Krsna, You have got that power." And actually He is so. Krsna failed to give Krsna-prema, love of Krsna, when He came personally and taught Bhagavad-gita. He simply said, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. But people misunderstood Him. Therefore Krsna came as a devotee and offered Krsna-prema to the people in general. So our request to everyone that you take this Krsna consciousness movement, and you will feel that "I don't want any more, anything more. I am satisfied, fully satisfied."

Thank you very much. Any question?

Visnujana: How do we render perfect service to Krsna?

Prabhupada: By your anxiety. (laughter, "Haribol!") If you are anxious to serve Krsna, that is the real asset. Krsna is unlimited. What service we can offer to Him? And He has got unlimited servants also. What service He requires from you and me? He's perfect in Himself. He doesn't require any service also. But if you are anxious to serve Him, then He does not refuse. That is His mercy; that is His magnanimity. So the more you increase your anxiety to serve Krsna, the more it becomes perfect. He's unlimited. Your anxiety, you become unlimited. So there is competition. The more you serve Krsna, the more He accepts you and the more He gives you intelligence. You see? So the spiritual world is unlimited. There is no end of service, and there is no end of accepting the service. It is not that. So eagerness. Tatra laulyam eka mulyam. I am not manufacturing the answer, but I am giving you evidence from Rupa Gosvami, our acarya. He says, krsna-bhakti-rasa-bhavita matih kriyatam yadi kuto 'pi labhyate: "My dear gentlemen, my dear boys and girls, if you can purchase a..., your sense of loving Krsna -- 'How I can love Krsna more and more' -- this, this much, this anxiety, if you can purchase this matih," -- means intelligence; it is very nice intelligence -- " 'How I shall serve Krsna...' " Krsna-bhakti-rasa-bhavita matih. Matih means intelligence or status of mind, that "I'll serve Krsna." "If you can purchase this status of mind anywhere, please immediately purchase." Then next question will be, "All right, I shall purchase. What is the price, do you know?" "Yes, I know what is the price." "What is that price?" "Laulyam, simply your eagerness, that's all." Laulyam ekam mulyam. "Ah, that I can have." No. Na janma kotibhis sukrtibhir labhyate. This eagerness, how to love Krsna, this is not available even after many, many births. So if you have a pinch of that anxiety, "How I can serve Krsna?" you must know you are the most fortunate man. A pinch only, laulya, this anxiety, "How I can serve Krsna?" it is very nice. Then Krsna will give you intelligence.

tesam satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
buddhi-yogam dadami tam...
 [Bg. 10.10]

"Anyone who is engaged with love and affection in My service, without any hypocrisy," then Krsna can understand everything. He is within me, within you. Then He will give you intelligence: "My dear boy, you do like this." And by doing that, what he will achieve? Yena mam upayanti te: "He'll come back to Me." And what profit he will get by going there? Ah, yad gatva na nivartante tad dhama paramam mama [Bg. 15.6]. Mam hi partha vyapasritya ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah [Bg. 9.32]. Duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15]. There are so many. Please read Bhagavad-gita As It Is. You'll get perfect knowledge, the science of God. That is the only study for human being.

So simply your eagerness is the perfection for serving Krsna. Increase that eagerness. And eagerness means if you love Krsna, that eagerness will increase with your increase of love: "How I shall serve Krsna?" Because you are voluntary servant, nobody is forcing. That means unless you love Krsna, how that eagerness will increase? So there are so many things to love Krsna. Beginning is this sravanam kirtanam. This sravanam, hearing, and chanting. Hearing, you are hearing Hare Krsna, you are hearing Bhagavad-gita, you are hearing Srimad-Bhagavatam about Krsna, and chanting. This is the beginning. Then, naturally,

sravanam kirtanam visnoh
smaranam pada-sevanam
arcanam vandanam dasyam
sakhyam atma-nivedanam
 [SB 7.5.23]

These nine kinds of different varieties of service to Krsna will enlighten you, will advance you in Krsna consciousness, and your life will be successful. Any other question? Try to understand, question. It is not a thing that we are forcibly pushing. You have got intelligence. Krsna has given you intelligence. Try to understand with your intelligence but do not try to avoid. Make your question to understand it, not making question to avoid it. There are two kinds of question. That question will not help you. If you try to avoid, then Krsna will help you to avoid, and if you want to capture Krsna, then Krsna will help you how you can capture. Two things are going on. Whatever path you want, you can accept. Ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham [Bg. 4.11]. Krsna helps according to the person's attitude. If... There are... Just like so many philosophers, they want to forget Krsna. Just like you will find in Dr. Radhakrishnan's book, in the Ninth Chapter Krsna said, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. The translation is all right, but he comments, "It is not to Krsna that you have to surrender." Just see. That means his whole process of writing the book is to mislead persons how one can forget Krsna. So if anyone wants to forget Krsna, Krsna will give him such intelligence that he will never be able to understand Krsna. But if anyone tries to love Krsna, understand Krsna, He'll give full of intelligence. You can understand. That is Krsna. You have got full liberty. But if you forget Krsna, then you have to serve maya, and if you love Krsna, then maya will leave you.

Tamala Krsna: Prabhupada, after Lord Caitanya took sannyasa, in the Teachings of Lord Caitanya it says He met His mother. I always thought that a sannyasi could not do that.

Prabhupada: No, a sannyasi cannot meet his wife. A sannyasi is forbidden to go home, and never meet his wife, but he can meet if other... But that... Caitanya Mahaprabhu did not go to His home. It is by arrangement. Advaita Prabhu brought His mother to see Caitanya. Caitanya Mahaprabhu, after accepting sannyasa He was just like mad after Krsna. He was going on the shore of the Ganges forgetting that this is Ganges. He thought that "This is Yamuna. I am going to Vrndavana, following the..." So Nityananda Prabhu sent one man, that "I am following Caitanya. Please inform Advaita to bring one boat in some ghata so that He'll be able to take Him to His home." So Caitanya Mahaprabhu was in ecstasy. Then He saw all of a sudden that Advaita was waiting with a boat. So He asked Him, "Advaita, why You are here? Here, it is Yamuna." Advaita said, "Yes, My dear Lord, wherever You are it is Yamuna. So You come with Me." So He went, and when He went He went to Advaita's home. Then He saw, "You have misled Me. You have brought Me at Your home. It is not Vrndavana. How is that?" "All right, Sir, You have come by mistake, so...," (laughter) "please remain here." So He immediately sent one man to His mother. Because He knew that Caitanya Mahaprabhu has accepted sannyasa; He's never coming back again to home. So His mother is mad after the son. He was the only son. So He gave a chance to His mother to see Him for the last time. That was arranged by Advaita. So when mother came, Caitanya Mahaprabhu immediately fell down on the feet of His mother. He was a young man, twenty-four years old, and the mother, when she saw that her son has accepted sannyasa, there is daughter-in-law at home, naturally woman, she was very much affected, began to cry. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu tried to pacify her with very nice words. He said, "My dear mother, this body is given by you, so I should have engaged My body in your service. But I am your foolish son. I have done some mistake. Please excuse Me." So that scene is very pathetic -- separation between mother and son. (long pause) All right, chant. Chant loudly. Loudly. (kirtana) (prema-dhvani) Hare Krsna. Jaya. Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Today's kirtana?

Tamala Krsna: We collected fifty dollars.

Prabhupada: Huh? Oh, that's nice. And Back to Godhead? How many copies sold, Back to Godhead?

Tamala Krsna: About fifty-two.

Prabhupada: Oh. That's nice. What is that? (end)

Take a test

Prabhupada:

na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum
durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah
andha yathandhair upaniyamanas
te 'pisa-tantryam uru-damni baddhah
 [SB 7.5.31]

The people in general, especially in this age, they do not know what is the goal of life, and still, they are leaders. That is the defect of the modern civilization. It is the defect of material world, but especially in this Kali-yuga, it is the most abominable, fallen age. There are Satya-yuga, Treta-yuga, Dvapara-yuga, and Kali-yuga, just like there are different seasons in the year -- summer, rainy season, then winter season, autumn, spring, like that. So formerly, in the Satya-yuga people used to live for 100,000's of years. Then, in the Treta-yuga, they used to live for 10,000 years. And in the Dvapara-yuga they used to live for 1,000 years. That is the maximum. And in the Kali-yuga they can live up to one hundred years. That is also not completed. With the advancement of Kali-yuga the duration of life, bodily strength, memory, mercifulness, religious sense -- in this way everything will be reduced. And the duration of life will be reduced so much so that it is stated in the Bhagavata that "If a man lives for twenty to thirty years he will be considered as a grand old man." And there will be not available especially rice, wheat, milk, sugar. These are stated. This is Kali-yuga.

So the nature of this material world is that without knowing the goal of life they become leaders. Material world, especially in this age, they do not know what is the goal of life. They do not know what he is. That is the defect. Dehatma-buddhih. Everyone, all over the world, they are thinking in terms of this body. Accidentally, somehow or other, because I have got this Indian body I am thinking, "I am Indian." And another person, he has got the American body from America... This land also we have demarcated. That is also our creation. Otherwise the land belongs to God. We have created this, that "This is America," "This is India," and "This is England," 'This is Germany..." But actually every land belongs to..., every land, sea, sky belongs to God. Isavasyam idam sarvam [Iso mantra 1]. That is Vedic civilization. "Everything belongs to God." Isavasyam idam sarvam. That is Krsna consciousness. People should be free to move in Krsna consciousness. Everything, actually it belongs to Krsna. But we have got restriction because we see "This is America, this is India, this is..." So they have been described here as andha yathandhair upaniyamanah: "These leaders are themselves blind, and they are leading other blind men." General public, they are blind, and the leaders are also blind. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanah [SB 7.5.31]. Why they are blind? Now, because they do not know what is the aim of life. Na te viduh. Na te viduh svartha-gatim. Everyone is self-interested. That's very good. You are self-interested; I am self-interested. So that is... But you do not know what is your self-interest. Therefore you are blind. That is described here, that "These blind leaders, they do not know." They are especially mentioned, andha yathandhair upaniyamanah. The leaders, they lead others. So, yad yad acarati srestha tat tad evetaro janah [Bg. 3.21]. Leaders are responsible because yad yad acarati srestha: "Those who are leaders, whatever they do, they perform, common men follow that." Therefore they must be very perfect. Common men follow the leaders. If the leaders are themselves imperfect, then what will be the position of the common men?

So here it is said that because the leaders, they do not know what is the aim of life, what is the goal of life, therefore common men, people in general, they are being misguided. They are being misguided. Suppose a blind man leads some other blind men. What will be the result? Both of them will meet danger. That is the result because... "Why? They are doing very nicely, with great cautiousness." No. But they do not know that they are bound up by the laws of nature. Te 'pisa-tantrya uru-damni baddhah. They cannot divert their attention or deviate from the laws of nature. That is not possible. So they are under the laws of nature. They do not now why the laws of nature acting in a different way, against their will. Suppose I do not wish to die. Why laws of nature enforcing, forcing me to die? Nobody wants to die. So you cannot surpass the laws of nature. Therefore Krsna presents in the Bhagavad-gita that "You are trying to solve the problems of life, but here are the real problems of life: janma-mrtyu-jara vyadhi-duhkha-dosanudarsanam [Bg. 13.9]." The real problem is that there is death, there is birth, there is old age and there is disease. This is real problem. That problem is due to this material body. Therefore our real problem is that we have got this material body, but we have no sense that "Within this material body I am the spirit soul, living. So how to get out of this material body and again revive our spiritual body?" Spiritual body is already there. How to become free from the bondage of this material body and become free again in spiritual life, that is real problem of life. That they do not. Who knows? Bring any big, big leaders. Ask him that "Do you know what is the problem of life?" They do not know. Therefore it is said, na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum [SB 7.5.31].

Therefore this movement, Krsna consciousness movement, is preaching back to Godhead, not go forward for meeting again and again birth, death, old age, and disease. That this portion of problem, we have already discussed yesterday. Punah punas carvita-carvananam [SB 7.5.30]. Punah punas carvita-carvananam means chewing the chewed. You have got sugarcane, many quantity. If somebody chewed the sugarcane, took out the juice, and if the remnants is thrown away, what you will get by chewing again that remnants? So punah punas carvita-carvananam [SB 7.5.30]. By our activities we are being placed under the laws of material nature -- prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27] -- infecting different modes of material nature. Just like if you infect that... This morning some medical officer came to inject me about the yellow fever. So why this injection, vaccine, against the disease? That means if I infect this yellow fever, I will have to suffer. Similarly, the modes of material nature are three: sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna. And as we are infecting ourself with the three kinds of modes of material nature, we are getting different types of bodies. Karanam guna-sango 'sya sad-asad-janma-yonisu [Bg. 13.22]. I am put into these laws of material nature, and as I am acting under the influence of different modes of material nature, I am getting a type of body. That is my material position. Bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19]. Tatha dehantara praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati [Bg. 2.13]. We have to change this body. Death means changing body. We are changing body every moment, every second, and getting a new body imperceptibly. And the last change of this body is taken as death, transmigration of the soul. But nobody knows "What kind of change is going to happen in my next body or next life." But there is change of body, dehantara-praptih. Just like I was a child. Now I have got another body, the body is changed. Similarly, when this body will be finished, then I will get another body. This is a fact. If we cannot understand, then we have to take it from authority to understand, because understanding means taking knowledge from the authority.

So Krsna says, dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara, tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. Dehantara-praptih is there, information. So how can we deny that there is no life after death? There is. But nobody is caring to understand, "What is my next life, what is going to happen? Today I may be in a very big position, and tomorrow, if I am going to be a tree..." Here we are sitting very comfortably in this room. Just a few yards after, there is a tree. He cannot move an inch even, and he has to stand there in cyclone, in scorching heat, in everything. Why? We are Both of us, we are living entities. Why he has got this body, I have got this body, and one may have better body than me? Why there are so many, 8,400,000 species of life and different position? Why this is? There is no such inquiry. There is no such knowledge. Therefore they have been described here as andha, blind. They do not know the goal of life that we are part and parcel of God. Mamaivamso jiva bhutah [Bg. 15.7]. Some way or other, we have come in material contact. Now it is our duty to get out of these laws of material Isa-tantrya. Isa-tantrya, under certain condition Just like under certain condition a criminal is put into the prisonhouse. So it is his duty to know that "I have committed this criminal activity; therefore I have been put into this jail or prison life. Some way or other, complete it, and let me decide not to commit again any criminal acts so that I may be put again into prison life." This is intelligent. Similarly, we should be educated how we have been put into this material conditional life and how we can get out of it and then again in our spiritual life we can go back to home, back to Godhead. That should be the aim of life. But na te viduh: "They do not know." Na te viduh svartha-gatim. The progress should be towards Visnu, Lord Visnu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, back to home, back to Godhead. They do not know. Why? Because durasaya. They are thinking that "We shall make adjustment in this material life, and we shall be happy."

Durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah. Bahih. Bahih means external. This material world is the external energy of God, and the spiritual world is the internal energy of God. So we are in the external energy of God. The external energy of God means although we are eternal, we have to accept different types of body according to our desire, according to our tendency to enjoy this material world, and therefore that facility is given in this material world. In the spiritual world there is only one aim -- they are all eternal servitors of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. They have no other desire. That is spiritual world. So you can transform this material world into spiritual world if you have got only aim to please the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Then it can be transformed into spiritual world, although spiritual world is differently situated. Paras tasmat tu bhavo 'nyo 'vyakto 'vyaktat sanatanah [Bg. 8.20]. There is another nature which is spiritual world. They have no information. But we get information from Bhagavad-gita and other sastras that spiritual world is still bigger. This material world is the one-fourth of the God's creation, and the spiritual world is the three-fourth. It is stated in the Bhagavad-gita, ekamsena sthito jagat.

When Arjuna inquired about Krsna's vibhuti, His opulence, He summarized,

athava bahunaitena
kim jnatena tavarjuna
vistabhya idam krtsnam
ekamsena sthito jagat
 [Bg. 10.42]

"My dear Arjuna, how long I shall describe you about My opulence? I summarize it that this material world is only one-fourth manifestation of My opulence." Ekamsena sthito jagat. This material world means... You have... We have got experience about this universe up to the sky, as far as we can see, the horizon. This is one universe. And there are millions of universes like this. That is stated in the Brahma-samhita, that yasya prabha prabhavato jagad-anda-koti-kotisv asesa-vasudhadi-vibhuti-bhinnam [Bs. 5.40]. Yasya prabha. The Lord's effulgence is Brahman effulgence. Within that Brahman effulgence there are innumerable universes, jagad-anda-koti. Jagad-anda means this brahmanda. Anda. It is round; it is not flat. Anda, just like egg. Koti. Koti means innumerable. And in each universe... Yasya prabha prabhavato jagad-anda-koti kotisv asesa-vasudhadi [Bs. 5.40]. In each brahmanda there are unlimited number of planets and stars, asesa-vasudha. And vibhuti-bhinnam. And each planet is differently situated. Each planet has got specific atmosphere, specific arrangement. Just like the sun globe. The sun globe is fiery. The moon, moon planet, it is very pleasing. There is also fire, but it is surrounded by cold atmosphere; therefore it is very pleasing. So vibhuti-bhinnam. Each every planet has got different atmosphere. And each and every planet, there are different kinds of living entities just suitable for that atmosphere. Don't think that in the sun planet there is no life. There is also life. If there is no life, how Krsna says that imam vivasvate yogam proktavan aham avyayam [Bg. 4.1]? Vivasvate means... The king of sun planet is known as Vivasvan. So Krsna spoke with him, so how you can say there is no life? This is material world, many millions of universes. In another place it is said, yasyaika-nisvasita-kalam athavalambya jivanti loma-bilaja jagad-anda-nathah [Bs. 5.48].

So we have to take information from the authoritative literature what is the position of this material world, the spiritual world, God, and His relationship with us, our position. This is real knowledge, not that a knowledge that how to live. Living condition is fulfilled by the nature's way. There are 8,400,000 different forms of living entities. They are not concerned how to eat, how to sleep. They know, by nature's arrangement there is already arrangement. Just like the birds in the morning. They rise up early in the morning. They are not concerned where they will eat. They know there is already arrangement for eating. The elephants in Africa, they know that God has already arranged for their eating forty kilos at a time. The ants within the room, they know there is already arrangement. So if God has arranged for everyone, eight million different species of life or forms of life, why not for human being? There is arrangement. But in the human being is advised to do certain things. They must do it. Then there is no question of scarcity. There is... Everything is arranged there. Just like Krsna says, annad bhavanti bhutani: [Bg. 3.14] "You produce your food grains so that the animals and the man, both will be happy." But if you don't produce food grains, if you produce sugarcane, then how they will be satisifed? Food grains must be produced. That is the injunction of the sastra. So, yah sastra-vidhim utsrjya vartate kama-karatah [Bg. 16.23]. If you do not follow the instruction of the sastra-sastra means the instruction of God -- then na siddhim sa, such civilization will never be perfect, na siddhim sa avapnoti, na sukham, neither they will be happy, na param gatim, neither they will be elevated back to home, back to Godhead. This is the defect. Therefore we should try to understand what is the goal of life. But that we do not know. Na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnu. By their own blind intelligence they are trying to adjust things within this material word, and they are being failure repeatedly. Still, they have no sense. So those who are actually leaders of the society, they should be sensible. They should take advice, instruction from the most perfect personality, Krsna, and adjust things. Then they will be happy.

Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. [break]

Devotee (1): He is asking if we are sure if we are right in what we are saying.

Prabhupada: Are you sure that you are right? I am sure because I am not speaking my words; I am speaking from the authority. Therefore I am sure.

Indian man (1): You are sure of somebody else's...

Prabhupada: No, your question is "Are you sure?" So I am sure because... Just like a small child, he does not know what is this. He asks, "Father, what is this?" The father says, "My dear child, it is called ring." So I heard from my father, "It is called ring," and if I say, "It is ring," then I am sure. I don't say it is something else. I heard it from my father that it is called ring. So if I call a ring a ring, that is truth. I may be child, but because I have heard from my father, who is not a child -- he is mature, and he gives me the knowledge -- "This is called ring," and if when I say, "This is ring," that is perfect. You can say that "You are a child. How do you know it is ring?" But if he says, "My father has said this is ring," then he is perfect. Similarly, we are not talking anything, manufacturing: "I think." We don't say like that, because I know I have no value. But we say what the authority says, Krsna says. That is our position. Therefore we are sure.

Indian man (2): I want to know one thing, Prabhupada. You have just said that in the moon there is a cold atmosphere and there is still a living entity there? You see? But what the Americans have said... Of course, they have sent man there, different rockets there, satellites...

Prabhupada: So I understand. Your authority is America, and my authority is sastra. That is the difference.

Indian man (2): But they...

Prabhupada: That is the difference. That means your authority is America. You say through the words of the American. You have not experienced. Your position: you have no experience. My position: I have no experience. But you accept the Americans, authority, and I accept the sastra as authority. That is the difference.

Indian man (2): This I want to know the difference, whether it is true or not.

Prabhupada: That is up to you whether you accept American or the sastra. (laughter) That is up to you. But you cannot say because you have learned from America, therefore it is correct.

Indian man (2): But they have revealed to the world that there is no living entity there, but the sastra says there is...

Prabhupada: Why? Reason does not say so. Why there is no living entity? We see living entity are everywhere. Why you say that there is no living entity?

Indian man (2): But when these fellows have come there...

Prabhupada: These fellows... Therefore your authority are these fellows. (laughter) These fellows will say something now, and after ten years they will change. These fellows are like that. (laughter)

Indian man (3): According to science it is said that...

Prabhupada: "According to science" means American science or Russian science. That's all.

Indian man (2): The sun, you see, is a ball of fire. Nothing can exist there, according to...

Prabhupada: No. We have got information -- even in the fire there are living entities. Why? Because, in the Bhagavad-gita you will find. The constitutional position of the living entity is that it does not become burned. So how you can say that in the fire? What is the verse? No, no. In the second chapter there is the description of the living entity, you find. The living entity... Find out.

Harikesa: Acchedyo?

Prabhupada: Huh? Acchedyo 'yam adahyo 'yam. Find it.

Harikesa:

acchedyo 'yam adahyo 'yam
akledyo 'sosya eva ca
nityah sarva-gatah sthanur
acalo'yam sanatanah

"This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluable and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, all-pervading, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same."

Prabhupada: So if he is all-pervading and if he is unburnable, then how it is possible that in the fire he does not exist? It cannot be burned, and it is everywhere. Sarva-ga. And we find also when we go on the sea beach -- within the sand there is life. Now it is up to you to accept the authority of Bhagavad-gita or authority of the Americans. That is your... We follow the authorities of Bhagavad-gita. Adahyo 'yam: "It cannot be burned." And from reason also, there is... In the water there are living entities; in the air there are living entities; in the earth there are living entities. So the material elements are five: earth, water, fire, air and sky. So if everywhere there is living entities, fire is also one of the material elements. Why not in the fire? What is the reason? And Bhagavad-gita says, adahyo 'yam: "It is never burned." So why do you think like that, that in the fire there is no living entity? Therefore they have been described as blind. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanah [SB 7.5.31]. They are blind, and they are leading other blind men. But they do not know what is the laws of nature, how things are going.

Devotee: There's another question. Yes? [break]

Guest (1): about all the words that you said about Krsna and God. If someone is a cruel man, he never expects in God, and all that we say for the man that you are saying falls from right here and get out on earth... In original life all was difficult for him.

Prabhupada: I cannot follow him. You are following?

Guest (1): What about his soul? Did God welcome it to paradise or soul are always in the air and makes people think that he is a devil's man too?

Devotee: If a man does not understand God in this lifetime, is he still accepted by God? What he is hearing does not come...

Prabhupada: God is everywhere, and God is with you also. God knows you, and He is trying to guide you. But you do not know Him.

Guest (1): You just said that the soul takes rebirth when he does. Therefore what's the soul? Got rebirth, soul, so that he will make always difficult thing in life and would not fix in God, or what God do with the souls?

Prabhupada: Soul is there, and God is there. When you take rebirth, God is also there. He is trying to guide you. You are desiring the... Just like "I want to enjoy like this," and God is giving you facility: "All right, you enjoy like this." Just like driver. You are asking driver, "Please take me to this place," so driver is taking you to that place. Similarly it is said in the Bhagavad-gita, isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati: [Bg. 18.61] "My dear Arjuna, the God is situated in everyone's heart, core of the heart," bhramayan sarva-bhutani [Bg. 18.61], "and He is causing the traveling of the living entity," yantrarudhani mayaya, "on a machine which is given by this material nature." So this body is just like a machine, motorcar, and Krsna is the driver, charioteer. And as you are desiring, He is driving your car in the same way or He is supplying different types of car. In this way you are... Life after life, you are trying to satisfy your senses. Krsna is giving you the facility, God is giving you the facility, but He is asking you that "Give up this business, nonsense." Sarvam-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja. He is simply finding out the opportunity how to say that, this ultimate truth of life. So our business is, instead of traveling in different cars and fulfill our whimsical desire, better surrender to God and abide by His order and be happy.

Guest (1): One more. If Krsna knows when he dies that he will...

Prabhupada: Krsna knows everything. There is no question.

Guest (1): Does He know that he will rebirth and then come to earth and to preach us and make all that?

Prabhupada: He is preaching always. He is preaching always, "Do this like this." Just like Bhagavad-gita is open to everyone. That is His preaching. But we are not accepting. That is our fault. Otherwise He is preaching always.

Guest (2): If man be part and parcel of God, how do you explain the evil deeds of man?

Prabhupada: Because he likes to do that.

Guest (2): That means God also likes to do evil.

Prabhupada: No. God gives simply facility. That's all.

Guest (1): Therefore he must have the same power as God.

Prabhupada: Not same power, but it has got a little independence.

Guest (1): It will exists on us.

Prabhupada: Yes, independence. By misusing the independence, he can... Just like a child, a small child, and his father. The father gives the little child little independence. But the child is not as powerful as the father. But still, the father, out of affection, he gives little independence to the child. Even to the dog, a master gives a little independence to the dog. That is affection.

Indian man (3): But if you say this affection... The child is doing something wrong, say, becoming enthusiastic, becoming mad to go...(?)

Prabhupada: Father says, "Don't do it. But if you do it, do it at your risk."

Indian man (3): But if Krsna is guiding us...

Prabhupada: But you don't accept Krsna's guidance. That is the difficulty. Just like you are taking the guidance of Americans. You are elderly man, educated man, you prefer to take guidance from the Americans, not from Krsna. So what can be done? That is Krsna's ill luck and your misfortune. What can be done? All right. Chant Hare Krsna. (end)

"Always Expect Danger"

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.8.24
Mayapura, October 4, 1974

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Nitai: "My dear Krsna, Your Lordship has protected us from a poisoned cake, from a great fire, from cannibals, from the vicious assembly, from sufferings during our exile in the forest and from the battle where great generals fought. And now You have saved us from the weapon of Asvatthama."

Prabhupada: So in the last verse, Kunti accepted, vimocita aham ca sahatmaja vibho: "My Lord, there were so many dangers, and You saved us, along with my sons." Muhur vipad-ganat: "One after another, dangerous position." So some of them are being described.

Visat: "from poison." The Dhrtarastra group, Dhrtarastra and his sons, they conspired to give them poison. They were transferred to a house. They were so obedient because Dhrtarastra happened to be the superior in the house, and he took care of the Pandavas when they were small children because their father died at an early age. So it was the duty of the elderly members of the family. After all, they were very respectable ksatriya family. So the elderly members means Dhrtarastra and Vidura and Bhismadeva. Bhismadeva was the grandfather of the family, and Dhrtarastra was the elder brother of Pandava, and Vidura was also brother, Vidura, also elder. Pandu was the youngest, the father of Maharaja Yudhisthira and... So it is, after all, a, what is called, varnasrama family, Vedic family. So the elderly people had the responsibility to raise the fatherless children. So Dhrtarastra took charge as the eldest member. So maya is very strong. He began to think that "Actually this kingdom belongs to me. I am the eldest son, but because I am born blind, therefore it was given to my younger brother. Now he is dead. Now he's dead, so the property belongs to me. Some way or other, it was transferred to my younger brother. Now the younger brother is dead. Then again I become proprietor. So at least I could not rule over the kingdom, why not my sons?" This was the beginning.

Just like one of our Godbrothers, he's thinking that "This institution was started by me and Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati as partners. Now the senior partner is dead. Therefore I am the sole proprietor. Who are these Godbrothers? Let them go away." So this is maya, the same maya Dhrtarastra was thinking. And his brother-in-law, Sakuni, was very expert in conspiracy. So he was advising him, "Yes, you are the proprietor. At least your sons should be..." This is natural. Every... Everyone has got some affection for the family. So this is the beginning of the conspiracy. Otherwise, he was taking care of the children very nicely. But maya was dictating that "You are taking care of the children of your brother. What about your own children?" "Yes, why not my children?"

So attempt was being made how to kill these boys. The first attempt was to administer poison. They... Dhrtarastra constructed a house of shellac. So they were transferred: "My dear boys, for some days you can live in that house. That is very nice." So Vidura gave him hint, so, that "You are being sent there. Be careful for being killed. The house will be set fire." So Vidura was very favorable to the Pandavas. So they made a subway in that house, and when the house was set fire, they escaped through the subway. In this way, it is said, visan mahagneh, set fire in shellac house... Just like nowadays this, what is called, plastic. It gets set fire very soon. Then purusada, they took shelter in a house where there was a raksasa, cannibal. He was disturbing the whole village. So the settlement was that every day one family should hand over one man to him for eating, then he will not create disturbance. So the Pandavas were taking shelter in a house after escaping from the fire, and the... One day the turn came to that family that they would have to hand over one member of the family to that cannibal. So the Pandavas were present. They thought, "We are guest here, and they are in danger, so we must save them." This is obligation. If you become guest in a house, he's receiving you well, he's supplying you your necessities, so you are considered to be very intimate friend. So when they are danger, you must help. This consideration... Then it was decided that "This man should be hand over. Bhima shall go." So when Bhima was handed over to that cannibals, so he was killed. So... But it was a great danger.

So in this way, danger after danger. Then asat-sabhayah: "The assembly of crooked persons." Draupadi was lost in bet, betting. So Karna, he had some attraction for Draupadi from the beginning, when there was svayamvara. So Karna also went to contest, and he had very much attraction for Draupadi, but Draupadi wanted to get Arjuna as her husband. So she pointed out... Because she knew that "If Karna takes the contest, he will be victorious. Karna is more expert than Arjuna"; therefore she played a trick that "This svayamvara ceremony is meant for the ksatriyas, not for others. I cannot accept my husband, anyone else except the ksatriya.

So Karna is not a ksatriya." Karna's history is that Karna is the pre-marriage son of Kunti. Before her being married, she was born of Kunti from the ear. Therefore his name is Karna. But still, out of social fear, Kunti did not kill the child. Nowadays they kill. But he floated the child on a boat, and the boat was let loose, go anywhere. So one carpenter collected Karna and raised him. But he was ksatriya. He was Kunti's son, born by sun, sun-god, Surya. So Kunti had the power of calling. He got the benediction from Durvasa. Durvasa gave her the benediction that "You can call any demigod, and at once he will come by this mantra." So when Kunti was young, not married, so Durvasa became the guest of her father, and she served Durvasa Muni very nicely, attending as maidservant. Although she was king's daughter, but because Durvasa was guest, he was taken care of very nicely. So Durvasa became very pleased and gave her this blessing, that "You can call any demigod, as you like." So out of curiosity she chanted the mantra and called the sun-god, Vivasvan. So he came. So he wanted to give her a child, benediction. She said that "I am unmarried. I cannot have child." "No, this child will be born from your ear." Aksata-yoni. Aksata-yoni means a girl who has no union with any other man. That is called aksata-yoni. So in this way Karna was born, but he was raised by a carpenter. Therefore he was not considered to be a ksatriya. So Draupadi knew that Karna, if he contests, then he will be victorious, so she played a trick that "I cannot allow anyone else except the ksatriyas to contest in this svayamvara."

So Karna had attraction for Draupadi, and he remembered the insult also, that "Draupadi has insulted me, not to allow to take part in the contest." Now that old grudge, he wanted to fulfill. When Draupadi was lost in the gambling, so this Duryodhana and others, they are... They were very friendly to Karna. So he advised, "Now this woman is lost. We can use her as we like." So they decided, "Yes, why not? So make her naked in this assembly." So it was decided that they would see this woman naked, naked beauty. Therefore, asat-sabhayah. This assembly was not of gentlemen. Asat. This word is used. Sat and asat. Sat means gentle, and asat means uncivilized. So they were so much uncivilized that they wanted, "Never mind. That woman was lost. It was a betting." Her husbands were quite competent, but because that they thought that "We are lost," they did not take any part: "You can use her as you like." But that was not the duty of gentlemen, a ksatriya. Therefore it is mentioned as asat-sabhayah. A woman is asked to be naked in the assembly -- that assembly is not gentlemen's assembly. That is meant for the uncivilized, crude. The woman is respected everywhere.

So in India, especially, women are still respected. Therefore Canakya Pandita says, matrvat para-daresu: "Any woman who is not your wife, she should be treated as your mother." This is moral instruction. Matrvat. At the present moment, they have invented the word bahinaji, "sister." No. In the Vedic culture, there is no such thing as "sister." "Mother," that is Vedic culture. Because mother is always respected, so any woman, if she is called "Mother..." The brahmacari would go to the householder's house and address the ladies, "Mother. Mother, give us some alms." So from the childhood, a brahmacari is trained to address all women as mother. Therefore, when they are young, they cannot see women in any other way. This is Vedic culture. So therefore it is said, asat. The woman, who is respected as mother, and this, in this assembly, Draupadi was to be naked by the order of Karna? It is uncivilized, unlawful. So Krsna remembered this. When Karna was killed, it was not... He was not killed lawfully because he fell down from his chariot, and he was trying to repair the chariot, and Krsna advised Arjuna, "This is the opportunity to kill him. Otherwise you cannot kill him. Kill him immediately." So when Karna protested, "Arjuna, what you are doing? I am not fighting. I am repairing my chariot and you..." So Krsna said, "Yes, you did unlawful action by making Draupadi naked. So you should be unlawfully killed. This is justice. This is justice to you." So everything has got so much history in the episode of Mahabharata. Therefore it is called Mahabharata, "Greater India." Mahabharata.

So asat-sabhayah. Then again, vana-vasa. Next betting was vana-vasa, that "If this time you lose, then twelve years, for twelve years you'll have to go to live in the forest. And one year, incognito. If you are caught up within that one year, then again twelve years." Just see. So vana-vasa-krcchratah. There were so many dangers. So just imagine that the Pandavas, they had their wife, Draupadi... She is incarnation of goddess of fortune. And friend, Krsna, who is always protecting them... But still, there are so many dangers. This is the instruction, that because Krsna is protecting you, you cannot expect that you'll be out of danger. Danger you must meet, because..., then you'll know that this material existence is full of dangers. Padam padam yad vipadam. This we always remember. We should not be so fool that "I am living very now comfortably." No, sir. You are in danger. That is said by Krsna. Duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15]. You do not take this material existence as comfortable at any moment. Then you'll not be able to make progress in spiritual life. As soon as you think that "I am very comfortable here," then you are spiritually fall down. That is maya. As soon as...

So at the present moment, people are becoming implicated with maya more and more because foolishly they are thinking that "I am now very comfortable. I have got this skyscraper building. I have got so much bank balance. I have got so nice wife. So I am comfortable." They are thinking like that. They do not know that it is not comfortable life. It is dangerous life because you have to change your body. Tatha dehantara-praptih. Why don't you remember that? Because as soon as death will take place next moment... You are proprietor of this house; next moment you become dog of this house. If you have got very much attachment for the house, and at the same time your activities have been like dog's, then you get the body of a dog, and you may remain in this quarter and bark, "Gyeow! Gyeow! Gyeow! Gyeow! Gyeow!" That they do not know. Nunam pramattah kurute vikarma [SB 5.5.4]. When there is nice building, nice comfortable life, they do anything sinful without knowing that "I am not going to be escaped by these sinful activities. I will have to suffer for this. As I am enjoying now material comforts due to my some pious activities in the past, similarly, if I commit sinful life, then I'll have to suffer next life." That they do not know.

Therefore it is always dangerous. To enjoy in this material life is dangerous because you are creating next life very, very abominable. That... The only escape is... That will be explained by Kuntidevi in the next verse, that they were in danger, but they were simply thinking of Krsna, "Krsna, we have no other shelter." This position should be taken. We are always in danger, and we should always think of the lotus feet of Krsna. Then we are safe. Otherwise it is very dangerous. Even Kunti and others, Pandavas.

Then mrdhe mrdhe aneka-maharatha astratah. Then at last, after all these tribulations, at last it was decided... Krsna wanted to settle up that "You have given these Pandavas so much trouble. Never mind. But they are ksatriyas. They cannot become vaisya or sudra or brahmana. So they must have some place to rule over. So you give these five brothers five villages so they can rule and live." "No, that is not possible. We are not going to leave a spot of land which can contain the upper portion of the needle without fight." So then there was fight. The Battle of Kuruksetra was forced upon the Pandavas by the Kurus. Still, Arjuna was not willing to kill them. Just see. He's Vaisnava. He never thought of, that "My, these cousin-brothers, they have given us so much trouble. Why I shall be sympathetic upon them?" No. Still, he was sympathetic. Why? Now, because he was a Vaisnava. That is Vaisnava. Para-duhkha-duhkhi krpambudhir yas tam aham prapadye. Vaisnava is so tolerant. They suffer; still, they do not want others' suffering. So this is Vaisnava.

So in that battlefield, mrdhe mrdhe, there were Bhismadeva, Dronacarya, Karna, Krpacarya. They were so big fighters, maha-ratha. Maha-ratha means... Maha-ratha, ati-ratha, eka-ratha. A fighter who can fight with one man, he is called eka-ratha. And one who can fight with thousands of men, he is called maha-ratha. And more than that, he is called ati-ratha. So these generals, Bhismadeva, Karnadeva, Karna and others, they were very, very powerful than Arjuna. Therefore Arjuna took the opportunity of killing Karna in a precarious position. Similarly, Bhisma was... Karna was almost dead when Bhisma was fighting. So Bhisma promised that "Today, either Arjuna will die or his dear friend, Krsna, will have to break His promise. Then I'll give up this fight." So Arjuna was almost shattered, his chariot broken, and he was exasperated. So at that time Krsna took one wheel and went to kill Bhismadeva. So Bhismadeva saw that "Krsna has broken His promise. Therefore I give up this fight." Krsna came to threaten him. That means He has broken His promise. "So I wanted to see that Krsna breaks." This is also affection, love, between devotee... Just like in sporting, just like you want to see your friend defeated, but that does not mean you are enemy. In sporting, there is fight. That one party is defeated. That does (not) mean they are enemies. Next moment, they shake hands, sit together, dine together. It is like that.

So in this way Krsna saved. Therefore maharatha astratah. And at last, Drauni, the son of Dronacarya, Asvatthama. He was so crooked that he killed the five sons of the five Pandavas, and at last, Maharaja Pariksit was in the womb of his mother. He wanted to kill him also. Brahmastra. Brahmastra, atomic bomb nowadays. It is almost similar, but it is still dangerous because atom bomb, you release -- it has no aim. It will kill with..., aimlessly. But the brahmastra is so accurate that if you want to kill somebody, it will go there, wherever he is, and it will kill. So Pariksit Maharaja was in the womb of the mother. The brahmastra entered the womb of the mother and was trying to kill this Pariksit Maharaja in the womb, and Krsna saved. He entered also within the womb and saved the child. Therefore it is said that drauny-astratas casma hare 'bhiraksitah. Krsna saved them in so many ways, so many ways. So that is being admitted. That is the behavior of Krsna and His devotees.

So we should not be afraid. Because this place is dangerous, we should expect always danger. But if we are faithful to Krsna, if we simply, I mean to say, expect help from Krsna, then Krsna will save you. These are the examples by the fight of Mahabharata.

Thank you very much. (end)

"To Serve Vaisnava Is More..."

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.7.45-46
Vrndavana, October 4, 1976

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Pradyumna: "It was by Dronacarya's mercy that you learned the military art of throwing arrows and the confidential art of controlling weapons."

Prabhupada:

sarahasyo dhanur-vedah
savisargopasamyamah
astra-gramas ca bhavata
siksito yad-anugrahat

This is also another Vedic civilization, that if you are benefited by somebody, you should always remain obliged to him. Siksito yad-anugrahat. There is one Bengali proverb, guru-mara-vidya. "Guru, you learn from him first of all, then kill him. Don't care for guru." This is demonic. By the grace of guru you learn something. Then when you learn something, then you become greater than him, don't care for guru. This is demonic. Even if you have learned something, you must feel always obliged, atah padarsayat(?).

So this is Vedic civilization. Draupadi advising Arjuna that "You have learned. Feel always obliged," atah padarsayat. So this is Vedic... "This military art, by his grace, by guru's grace, now you are expert in the science of military art. And suppose his son has committed some sinful activity. You cannot punish him, retaliate, so that guru's family will be aggrieved." This is Vedic culture. Not only he is personally, but in his absence, his wife, his family, you should consider them. So there is nothing about... What is the purport? Read.

Pradyumna: "Dhanur-veda or military science, was taught by Dronacarya with all its confidential secrets of throwing and controlling by Vedic hymns. Gross military science is dependent on material weapons, but finer than that is the art of throwing arrows saturated with Vedic hymns, which act more effectively than gross material weapons like machine guns or atomic bombs. The control is by Vedic mantras, or the transcendental science of sound. It is said in the Ramayana that Maharaja Dasaratha, the father of Lord Sri Rama, used to control arrows by sound only. He could pierce his target with his arrow by hearing the sound only, without seeing the object. So this is a finer military science than that of the gross material military weapons..."

Prabhupada: It is called sabda-vedi. He who... Just like I cannot see where is the bird. He's chirping. But sabda-vedi, I can throw wherever the bird is, it will go and kill. That is called sabda-vedi. Maharaja Dasaratha used it. Therefore he was cursed that he would die being aggrieved when Ramacandra will be banished. Go on.

Pradyumna: "So this is a finer military science than that of the gross military military weapons used nowadays. Arjuna was taught all this, and therefore Draupadi wished that Arjuna feel obliged to Acarya Drona for all these benefits. And in the absence of Dronacarya, his son was the representative. That was the opinion of the good lady Draupadi. It may be argued why Dronacarya, a rigid brahmana, should be a teacher in military science. But the reply is that a brahmana should become a teacher, regardless of what his department of knowledge is. A learned brahmana should become a teacher, a priest and a recipient of charity. A bona fide brahmana is authorized to accept such professions."

Prabhupada: So there is nothing especial to be explained. The only important part of this verse is, that don't learn guru-mara-vidya. Even if you become more learned that your guru, you should not exhibit it before your guru. You should always remain a fool number one. Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu showed Himself by His example. Guru more murkha dekhi 'karila sasana. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was not murkha, but He has taught us that before guru, we shall always remain a murkha. That is advancement. Not that "I know more than guru. I don't care for guru. Now give me blessing that I can find out some better guru." This nonsense, if you don't find... If your guru is not perfect, then why you are asking blessing to find out another?

So anyway, this guru-mara-vidya should be avoided. That is the instruction in this verse we can get, and that is the Vedic way. It is not that Draupadi is speaking, but Caitanya Mahaprabhu is also speaking... Caitanya Mahaprabhu was very strict on this point. As soon Vallabhacarya spoke that "I have written a better comment than Sridhara Svami," immediately Caitanya Mahaprabhu become offended. He said, "Oh, you have become more than Sridhara Svami? You don't care for Svami?" So he remarked immediately, svami yei jana na mane vesyara bhitare. That is the system. You cannot overrule acarya. Acarya... Acaryopasanam. Acarya should be always worshiped. Even if you, by ABCD, you have become more learned than the acarya... That is not possible, but if you foolishly think like that, still, you should not exhibit your foolishness, that you know more than the acarya. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's... By His life example, He has taught us that the more we remain ignorant, foolish before the acarya, or before the guru, that is more we advance. Real success is how one is faithful to his guru. That is real success. Yasya deve para bhaktir yatha deve tatha gurau. It is not by education or grammatical knowledge you can learn anything. No. It is by the grace of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And that grace comes down through the grace of guru. That grace also does not come directly. We should not be neglecting this point.

yasya deve para bhaktir
yatha deve tatha gurau
tasyaite kathita hy arthah
prakasante mahatmanah
[SU 6.23]

Things become revealed by devotion, not by so-called education. No. Ciram vicinvan. Na canya eko 'pi ciram vicinvan, prasada-lesanugrhita eva hi. By little prasada, satisfaction... In many places these things are stated. Yat karunya-kataksa-vaibhavavatam gauram eva stumah. Karunya-kataksa. Not complete karunya, but kataksa, simply little glancing, he becomes so great, kaivalyam narakayate tridasa-pur akasa...

Therefore Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura says, yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah **. Not that bhagavat-prasada is achieved by education and grammar. No. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah **. By the mercy of guru one can achieve. That is just like a common word, "If you love me, love my dog." So you cannot approach Krsna without loving His dog, His servant. Satam prasangat. A person who is trying to distribute the message of Krsna, he is very, very dear dog of Krsna. Na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah [Bg. 18.69]. He is very... It doesn't matter how far he is advanced in education, how far he has learned grammar. These are not the things. The things is how far he is working to carry out the mission of Krsna. Then one has to receive Krsna's mercy through the bona fide servant. Krsna cannot be bluffed by so-called education and grammar. Krsna is not so... Bhaktya mam abhijanati [Bg. 18.55]. He never says "By grammar or by education one can understand." Never says. Bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah. We should be educated, we should be very careful, but real thing is bhakti. Anyabhi... Bhajate mam ananya-bhak, sadhur eva sa mantavyah [Bg. 9.30]. Api cet su-duracarah. Many places it is said. Tad-vag-visargo janatagha-viplavo yasmin prati-slokam abaddhavaty api[ SB 1.5.11]. Even a bhakta writes something which is not very grammatically, rhetorically correct... Tad-vag-visargo janatagha-viplavah, namany anantasya yaso 'nkitani yat. But because he has tried to broadcast the glories of the Lord, even not in perfect language, that is his qualification.

tad-vag-visargo janatagha-viplavo
yasmin prati-slokam abaddhavaty api
namany anantasya yaso 'nkitani yat
srnvanti gayanti grnanti sadhavah
[ SB 1.5.11]

The sadhus, they are not interested about rhetorical or grammatical adjustment. The sadhu wants to see who has spoken. If he's a Vaisnava, then his word will be accepted. Caitanya Mahaprabhu strictly prohibits that is one is not a Vaisnava, don't hear from him. Avaisnava-mukhodgirnam putam hari-kathamrtam, sravanam naiva kartavyam. "But he's such a learned man," or "He's writes so nicely, correctly." But because he's not Vaisnava, one should not hear from him. "Why? It is so nicely written." No. Sarpocchistam yatha payah. Milk is very good food, everyone knows. But as soon as it is touched by the lips of a serpent, it is poison immediately. Therefore it is forbidden. And one who has no knowledge how to respect guru, how he can become Vaisnava? Chadiya vaisnava-seva nistara payeche keba, Narottama dasa Thakura says. If you don't become a faithful servant of Vaisnava, there is no possibility of your liberation. Chadiya vaisnava-seva nistara payecha keba. Tandera carana-sevi-bhakta-sane vasa, janame janame haya ei abhilasa. This is Narottama dasa Thakura's... Our determination should be to serve the previous guru and acarya. Evam parampara-praptam. That is our determination. Tandera carana-sevi. Our service... Not directly Krsna. Because to serve Vaisnava is more than serving Krsna directly. Mad-bhakta-pujabhyadhika [SB 11.19.21]. Krsna likes that. He doesn't accept anyone's service directly. That is a gross mistake. Therefore Narottama dasa Thakura is teaching us... [break] ...trying to become one with Krsna or one with the gopis. These are all Mayavada philosophy. Tandera carana-sevi. You have to serve the servant of Krsna, tad bhrtya dasa-dasa-dasanudasah. That is the way. Not directly.

So here Draupadi is reminding that, yad-anugrahat siksito bhavata: "You are neglecting his, satisfying him. Do you think if you kill his son he'll be satisfied? Maybe his son is a criminal from all points of view; still, ultimately, if you kill his son he'll be aggrieved. That is natural. That is natural." There was... In Allahabad, it is our practical experience. Two brothers, all of a sudden, they became angry. They fought one another. One brother was killed. The anger is so dangerous. So naturally, in the court he was ordered to be hanged. Then the father appealed to the court that "My one son is already killed, and the other remaining son, if he is also killed, then what will be my condition?" So court considered this proposal, and the boy was ordered to be killed, he was saved. Yes. So this consideration is there even in ordinary way. And actually, these sons were rogues. They fought, one is killed, another is going to be killed. But this old man will be finished. The court considered it, and he was saved. He was not hanged. He was given some long duration of imprisonment. That we have seen. The same thing, the affection is everywhere. So Draupadi is giving the best instruction, that "By the mercy of Dronacarya you have learned this art, and now this art you are going to use for killing his son? What is this logic?" Very good argument.

A similar argument was given by Duryodhana to Dronacarya. Dronacarya and this Draupadi's father, they became inimical. So he got a son, Uttara. No? Anyway, that son was meant for killing Dronacarya. And at the same time, that son was a student of Dronacarya in the art of military science. So Duryodhana reminded Dronacarya that "This son, Virata, Virata Maharaja's son, He is meant for killing you, and you have foolishly taught him the military science. Now he's using the military science to kill you." So there are so many instances like that. Sometimes this art, guru-mara-vidya, is done by rascals and fools. That should not be done. That is instruction from every practical point of view.

Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. (end)
