Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Take a test

Prabhupada: Madana-mohana, Madana-mohana. Madana means sex attraction. Madana, sex attraction, Cupid, and Krsna is called Madana-mohana. One can, I mean, neglect even sex attraction if one is attracted to Krsna. That is the test. Madana (is) attracting in this material world. Everyone is attracted by sex life. The whole material world is existing on sex life. This is the fact. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-suhkham hi tuccham. Here, the happiness, the so-called happiness is maithuna, maithunadi. Maithunadi means here happiness begins from maithuna, sex intercourse. Generally, people..., a man marries. The purpose is to satisfy sex desire. Then he begets children. Then again, when the children are grown up, they, the daughter is married with another boy and the boy is married with another daughter, another girl. That is also the same purpose: sex. Then again, grandchildren. In this way, this material happiness -- sriyaisvarya-prajepsavah. The other day we discussed. Sri means beauty, aisvarya means wealth, and praja means generation. So generally, people, they like it -- good family, good bank balance and good wife, good daughter, daughter-in-law. If one family is consisting of beautiful women and riches and grea..., many children, he is supposed to be successful. He's supposed to be most successful man. So sastra says, "What is this success? This success is beginning with sex intercourse. That's all. And maintaining them." So yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham [SB 7.9.45]. Here the happiness begins from sex life, maithunadi. We may polish it in a different way, but this maithuna, sex life happiness, is there in the hogs. The hogs also, they are eating whole day, here and there: "Where is stool? Where is stool?" and having sex life without any discrimination. The hogs do not discriminate whether mother, sister or daughter. So therefore sastra says, "Here, this material world, we are entangled, we are encaged in this material world only for this sex life." That is Cupid. Cupid is the god of sex life, Madana. Unless one is, what is called, induced by Madana, the Cupid, he cannot be, I mean to say, engladdened in sex life. And Krsna's name is Madana-mohana. Madana-mohana means that one who is attracted to Krsna, he'll forget the pleasure derived from sex life. This is the test. Therefore His name is Madana-mohana. Here is Madana-mohana. Sanatana Gosvami worshiped Madana-mohana. Madana or Madana. Madana means to become mad. And Madana, the Cupid.

So everyone is infuriated by the force of sex life. There are many places... In Bhagavatam it is said, pumsah striya mithuni-bhavam etat tayor mitho hrdaya-granthim ahur. The whole material world is going on: the man is attracted by woman, the woman is attracted by man. And, seeking this attraction, when they are united, their attachment for this material world becomes more and more. And in this way, after being united, or after being married, one woman and man, they seek nice home, grha; ksetra, activities, business, factory, or agricultural field. Because one has to earn money. So get food. Grha-ksetra; suta, children; and apta, friends; vitta, wealth... Atah grha-ksetra-sutapta-vittair janasya moho 'yam [SB 5.5.8]. The attraction for this material world becomes more and more tight. This is called madana, attraction by madana. But our business is not to be attracted by the glimmer of this material world, but to be attracted by Krsna. That is Krsna consciousness movement. Unless you become attracted by the beauty of Krsna, we must have to be satisfied by beauty of this false beauty of this material world. Therefore Sri Yamunacarya said that yadavadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravindayor nava-nava-dhama rantum asit: "So long I have been attracted by the beauty of Krsna and I have begun to serve at His lotus feet, and I am getting newer, newer energy, since then, as soon as I think of sex intercourse, I want to spite on it." That is vitrsna, no more attraction... The central point of attraction of this material world is sex life, and one, when one gets detached from sex life... Tadavadhi mama cetah...,

yadavadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravindayor
nava-nava-(rasa-)dham(anudyata) rantum asit
tadavadhi bata nari-sangame smaryamane
bhavati mukha-vikarah sustu nisthivanam ca

"As soon as I think of sex intercourse, immediately my mouth becomes turned aside and I want to spite on it." So therefore Krsna is Madana-mohana. Madana is attracting everyone, sex life, and Krsna, when one is attracted by Krsna, then madana also becomes defeated. So as soon as madana becomes defeated, we conquer over this material world. Otherwise it is very difficult. The... Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14]. Duratyaya means very, very difficult. Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti. But if anyone surrenders unto Krsna, catches His lotus feet very strongly, "Krsna, save me," Krsna promises, "Yes, I'll save you." Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah [Bg. 18.66]. "Don't worry. I shall save you." Kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati [Bg. 9.31]. "My dear Arjuna, you can declare to the world, My devotee, pure devotee, anyabhilasita-sunyam [Brs. 1.1.11], who has no other desire, he'll be protected by Me."

So people do not know that our only business is to take shelter of the lotus feet of Krsna. That is the only business. We have no other business. Any other business means we are becoming entangled in this material world. And the aim of human life is to get out of these clutches of material world. People do not know it. They do not know. Na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum [SB 7.5.31]. So it is very difficult; still, Caitanya Mahaprabhu ordered to distribute this knowledge all over the world. So let us try. Even the people do not take our instruction, that is not our disqualification. Our qualification is let us try our best. The maya is very strong. To take the living entities out of the clutches of maya is not very easy thing. My Guru Maharaja used to say... He had so many temples all over India, and he used to say sometimes that "If by selling all these properties, temples, if I could turn one man to Krsna consciousness, then my mission will be successful." He used to say that. So our purpose is not to construct big, big buildings. That is required for propaganda work, for giving shelter to people. But our main business is how to turn the face of the bewildered conditioned souls towards Krsna. That is our method. That is our main purpose. Therefore, Bhaktivinoda Thakura and other Vaisnavas, they did not advise to give much attention for constructing big, big temples and mathas. Because if our attention is diverted towards these material things... Material things means, as I have repeatedly explained, forgetful of Krsna. Otherwise there is no, nothing material. It is illusion. Illusion means actually there is nothing material. How it can be material? If the Supreme Lord is Supreme Spirit, everything is coming from Him, so what we call the material energy, that is also coming from the Supreme.

But the difficulty is that in this inferior energy... Inferior energy means where there is possibility of forgetting Krsna. Actually, that is the fact. People are engaged in so many activities. We can see it very nicely in the Western countries. They are inventing so many modern facilities. But the result is they're forgetting Krsna. That is material. Material means forgetfulness of Krsna. Otherwise, there is nothing except Krsna. Idam hi visvam bhagavan ivetarah. Prahlada Maharaja, yes, Narada Maharaja said that "This world is Krsna." Idam hi visvam bhagavan ivetarah. "But it appears like that it is different from Bhagavan." Actually, there is... For a maha-bhagavata, he has no such conception, material conception, because he sees everywhere Krsna. Sthavara-jangama dekhe na dekhe tara murti [Cc. Madhya 8.274]. He's seeing one tree, but he is, he's forgetful of the tree. He's seeing energy of Krsna. As soon as he sees the energy of Krsna, he sees Krsna. Therefore instead of seeing the tree, he sees Krsna. Because one after, after, coming, reference to the context. As soon as he sees anything we call material, he sees this is the conversion of the energy. Parinama-vada. Sarvedam akhilam jagat. Parasya brahmanah saktih. Parasya bra... Just like as soon as you see the sunshine, you see immediately sun. Is it not? In the morning, as soon as you see within your window the sunshine, immediately you remember sun and you are confident sun is there. Without sun, how there can be sunshine? Similarly, whatever we see, if we immediately see Krsna, with reference to that particular thing... Because that particular thing is the manifestation of the energy of Krsna. So those who have understood Krsna along with His energies, he sees the energy, because energy is not different from the energetic, he sees immediately Krsna. Therefore, he does not see anything except Krsna. So therefore, for him, there is no material world. There is no material world. To a perfect devotee, there is no material world. Everything is spiritual. Sarvam khalv idam brahma. He sees everything Brahman.

So we have to make our eyes to see Krsna. Tat-paratvena nirmalam.

sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam
tat-paratvena nirmalam
hrsikena hrsikesa-
sevanam bhaktir ucyate
 [Cc. Madhya 19.170]

Tat-paratvena. As soon as we are in Krsna consciousness, our seeing, touching, smelling -- everything become nirmala, purified. Then we can immediately see Krsna. These eyes, so long it is not purified, we cannot see Krsna. As soon as it is purified, you see Krsna. As soon as it is purified, you see Krsna, nothing but Krsna. So this is the process. So devotional service means purification.

sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam
tat-paratvena nirmalam
hrsikena hrsikesa-
sevanam bhaktir ucyate
 [Cc. Madhya 19.170]

anyabhilasita-sunyam
jnana-karmady-anavrtam
anukulyena krsnanu-
silanam bhaktir uttama
 [Brs. 1.1.11]

So Cupid, Cupid is one of the agents of this material, illusory energy, but if we are perfectly in Krsna consciousness, this Cupid cannot pierce with our arrows, with his arrows. That is not possible. As Yamunacarya says, that tadavadhi mama cetah krsna-pa..., yadavadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravindo... So to a devotee... Just like Haridasa Thakura. You know the story of Haridasa Thakura. Haridasa Thakura was young man, and the Maya, and a prostitute, they came, young prostitute, nicely dressed, and proposed her desire. Haridasa Thakura said, "Yes, please sit down. I shall fulfill your desire. Let me finish my chanting." Just see. At dead of night, a young man, Haridasa Thakura; in front, there is a beautiful young girl; there is nobody else; and she's proposing. But still, he's steady, chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. So Cupid cannot pierce. This is the example. There may be thousands of beautiful women before a devotee, but that does not disturb his mind. He sees they're all energies of Krsna. "They are gopis of Krsna. They are enjoyable by Krsna. I have to serve them. They're gopis. Because I am servant of the servant." Gopi-bhartuh pada-kamalayoh dasa-dasa-dasanudasah [Cc. Madhya 13.80]. So a devotee should try to engage all beautiful women in the service of Krsna. That is his duty. Not to enjoy them. That is sense gratification. This is the position of a devotee. He's not pierced by the arrows of Cupid, but he sees everything, nirbandhe krsna-sambandhe. He sees everything in relationship with Krsna. Yukta-vairagyam ucyate. That is vairagyam. He does not accept anything for his sense gratification, but he engages everyone in the service of Krsna. Then we can get out of the influence of the arrow of Cupid. This is the process. Go on.

Pradyumna: "To perform devotional service means to follow in the footsteps of Radharani, and devotees in Vrndavana put themselves under the care of Radharani in order to achieve perfection in their devotional service. In other words, devotional service is not an activity of the material world; it is directly under the control of Radharani. In the Bhagavad-gita it is confirmed that the mahatmas, or great souls, are under the protection of daivi prakrti, the internal energy -- Radharani. So, being directly under the control of the internal potency of Krsna, devotional service attracts even Krsna Himself."

Prabhupada: Yes. Mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah, bhajanty ananya-manaso [Bg. 9.13]. Here we are under the influence of this material energy, but those who are devotee of Krsna, they are under the influence of internal energy. The internal energy of Krsna, it has got three different functions. One of the function is hladini sakti. That is Radharani. That is Radharani. Radharani is the pleasure potency of Krsna.

radha krsna-pranaya-vikrtir hladini saktir asmad
ekatmanav api (bhuvi pura) deha-bhedam gatau tau
sri-caitanyakhyam prakatam adhuna tad-dvayam caikyam aptam...
 [Cc. Adi 1.5]

Radha-krsna..., that Caitanya Mahaprabhu is... That is the version of Sri Svarupa Damodara, that "Radha and Krsna, They are one, Krsna." When Krsna wants to enjoy, He manifests His energy. That is Radharani. Krsna cannot enjoy the material energy; He enjoys the internal energy. Krsna has got many energies. Parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate, svabhavaki-jnana-bala-kriya ca [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport]. That is the Vedic version, that the Supreme Absolute Truth has got multi-energies, and by utilizing, manipulating that energy, He is manifesting Himself in so many ways. The same example: just like the sun, by expanding its energy, heat and light, is perceived. The sun is ninety-three million miles away from us. So how we can understand the sun? By his heat and energy. By his heat, we can calculate what is the actual temperature. The scientists are calculating the actual temperature of the sun. So similarly, although Krsna is far, far away from us... Goloka eva nivasati. He's residing in His abode, Goloka, Vrndavana. This is the replica of that Vrndavana. So akhilatma-bhutah. How He's akhilatma-bhutah [Bs. 5.37]? How He's all-pervading? By His energy. By His energy. Just like Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita: maya tatam idam sarvam jagat avyakta-murtina [Bg. 9.4]. That energy is avyakta, impersonal. But Krsna is not impersonal. Krsna is person. Just like the sun-god, he's a person, but his energy, sunshine and heat, that is impersonal. To reach impersonal feature of the sun or the sunshine is not approaching the sun. It is approaching and not approaching. It is approaching in the sense that directly in touch with his energy, but still, the sun globe and the sun-god is far away. Similarly, brahmeti paramatmeti bhagavan iti sabdyate [SB 1.2.11]. To approach the impersonal feature of Brahman is not sufficient. We have to approach Krsna. So the Radharani, the personal,... His energy's also personal. So mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah [Bg. 9.13]. If we take shelter of His external energy, where forgetfulness, Krsna, is very prominent, then we become far and far away from Krsna. But if we take shelter of the internal energy of Krsna, Radharani, because She's directly serving Krsna... Just like in Vrndavana, they always speak of Radharani because they have taken shelter of Radharani to approach Krsna very easily. Daivim prakrtim asritah. The facility of Vrndavana is that you take shelter of Radharani directly and She will help you to approach Krsna very soon. This is the idea of coming to Vrndavana. Go on.

Pradyumna: "This fact is corroborated by Krsna in the Eleventh Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, Twelfth Chapter, 1st verse, where He says, 'My dear Uddhava, you may know it from Me that the attraction I feel for devotional service rendered by My devotees is not to be attained even by the performance of mystic yoga, philosophical speculation, ritualistic sacrifices, the study of Vedanta, the practice of severe austerities or the giving of everything in charity. These are, of course, very nice activities, but they are not as attractive to Me as the transcendental loving service rendered to My devotees.' How Krsna becomes attracted by the devotional service of His devotees is described by Narada in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, Seventh Canto, Tenth Chapter, 37th verse. There Narada addresses King Yudhisthira while the King is appreciating the glories of the character of Prahlada Maharaja. A devotee always appreciates the qualities of other devotees."

Prabhupada: Yes. That is the sign of devotee: appreciation (of) the activities of devotee. This appreciation means a devotee who is actually freed from all contamination, he does not find any fault with other devotee. That is the sign. He does not think himself that he is bigger devotee or greater devotee than others. He thinks himself as the lowest of all. As Caitanya, as Caitanya-caritamrta author, Kaviraja Gosvami, says, purisera kita haite muni se lagistha: [Cc. Adi 5.205] "I am lower than the insect within the stool." Jagai-madhai haite se muni papistha: "I am greater sinner than Jagai and Madhai." Mora nama yei laya tara punya ksaya: "Anyone who takes my name, immediately, all the result of his pious activities becomes vanquished." He's placing like that. Because it is not imitation or any bluff. He's... Any devotee who's actually advanced, he feels like that. Just like great scientist, Sir Isaac Newton, he used to say that "I have simply collected a few grains of sand in the ocean of knowledge." Yes. He used to say. And actually, that is the fact. Everything is unlimited. So nobody should be proud falsely that he has become a great devotee. Everyone should be very humble.

trnad api sunicena
taror api sahisnuna
amanina manadena
kirtaniyah sada harih
 [Cc. Adi 17.31]

If one thinks that he has become very advanced in devotion, then that is very dangerous. Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, guru more murkha dekhi' karila sasana: [Cc. Adi 7.71] "My spiritual master saw Me a great fool. Therefore he has chastised Me, that 'Don't try to read the Vedanta. Chant Hare Krsna.' " He presented Himself like that. Is Caitanya Mahaprabhu murkha? But that is the conception, advanced devotee. They never think that they are very highly advanced devotees. What is advanced devotee? What devotion we can offer to Krsna? He's unlimited. He's kindly accepting our little service. That's all. Don't be proud of becoming a great devotee. That is the cause of falldown.

Thank you very much. (end)

Transcendental Goodness

Transcendental Goodness
Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.5.24

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Pradyumna: "The Vedas are my eternal, transcendental sound incarnation. Therefore the Vedas are sabda-brahma. In this world, the brahmanas thoroughly study all the Vedas, and because they assimilate the Vedic conclusions, they are also to be considered the Vedas personified. The brahmanas are situated in the supreme transcendental mode of nature, sattva-guna. Because of this they are fixed in mind control, or sama; sense control, dama; and truthfulness, or satya. They describe the Vedas in their original sense, and out of mercy, or anugraha, they preach the purpose of the Vedas to all conditioned souls. They practice penance, or tapasya, and tolerance, titiksa, and they realize the position of the living entity and the Supreme Lord, anubhavah. These are the eight qualifications of the brahmanas. Therefore among all living entities no one is superior to the brahmanas."

Prabhupada:

dhrta tanur usati me purani
yeneha sattvam paramam pavitram
samo damah satyam anugrahas ca
tapas titiksanubhavas ca yatra
 [SB 5.5.24]

So the meaning is clearly described in the translation. So the brahmanas, why they are accepted as the supreme in the human society? On account of these qualities. We have discussed this point, that either brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, especially dvijottama... The brahmanas are called dvijottama. Dvija-srestha. Atah pumbhir dvija-srestha. Dvija means twice-born, one birth by the father and mother and the other birth by Vedic knowledge and spiritual master. Twice-born. So the dasa-vidha-samskara, purificatory processes... Samskarad bhaved dvijah. Unless one undergoes the purificatory process, he cannot be called twice-born. Janmana jayate sudrah: "By birth everyone is a sudra, fourth-class man." Practically we see that children, they are sent to school. Why they are sent to school? Because by birth he is foolish, abodha-jatah. There is no knowledge. Therefore he should be sent to school, as he makes progress, to colleges, to learn higher, higher. This is the material arrangement.

The same arrangement for spiritual education... Not that by birth, because one is born of a brahmana family, he remains a brahmana although he becomes less than sudra. No. There must be education. The twice-born, he must approach the spiritual master. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet [MU 1.2.12]. Just like the Sattva Satyakama, Jabala-Satyakama Upanisad. The boy approached Gautama Muni that "Kindly accept me, your disciple. Initiate me." Formerly, without becoming a brahmana specially, they were not initiated. So in those days all the families were very pure. Therefore born of a brahmana father is understood that he has got the training of a brahmana. That is a facility. Sucinam srimatam gehe yoga-bhrastah sanjayate [Bg. 6.41]. By pious activities or by practice of bhakti-yoga, if one has not completed, yoga-bhrasta, one who falls down from the yoga practice, such person is given another chance to take birth in a nice family, a brahmana family or a rich mercantile family. The brahmana family is rich in knowledge, and the ksatriyas and the vaisyas, they are rich in opulence, wealth, material riches. And sudras, they are not rich either in material wealth or in knowledge. Therefore they are called sudras.

So this bhakti-yoga or any yoga... Real yoga, or the first-class class yoga, is bhakti-yoga. Yoginam api sarvesam. There are many yogis. Out of them, the bhakta-yogi... Yoginam api sarvesam mad-gata antaratmana [Bg. 6.47]. Without becoming a bhakta-yogi, nobody can think of Krsna always. That is not possible. Satatam kirtanyanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah. The bhakti-yoga we are teaching in this Krsna consciousness movement twenty-four hours' engagement. Superficially we engage from four o'clock in the morning till ten o'clock at night, and that is resting time. But when one is advanced in devotional service, while sleeping he also serves Krsna. That means twenty-four hours, satatam. That depends on Because in sleeping you also dream, so what we do during daytime we dream at night. So if one is cent percent engaged in Krsna's service, naturally he'll dream also at night. I have seen one of our intimate relative. He was a businessman, selling cloth. So in dream also he was quoting price of cloth. So that is natural. That is not unnatural. Therefore we have to practice. At the time of death, somehow or other, if we quote the price of Krsna, then our life are successful. Therefore we should practice: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. Yam yam vapi smaran bhavam tyajaty ante kalevaram [Bg. 8.6]. If we practice Krsna, then naturally it is expected that at the time of death we remember Krsna. Then immediately we are transferred to the Krsnaloka, immediately. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti [Bg. 4.9]. Immediately. There is no doubt about it. Simple thing, but it requires practice.

Therefore, to practice Krsna consciousness we have to practice other things. That is the position of sattvam paramam pavitram. That is called suddha-sattva. Sattvam visuddham vasudeva-sabditam, there is a verse. Pure goodness. Pure goodness means there is only Vasudeva. Vasudevah sarvam iti [Bg. 7.19]. That is pure sattva, when there is no other conception, simply Vasudeva. Vasudeva is the platform. Just like Vasudeva was the father of Krsna. When Krsna appeared, Vasudeva was the father. So suddha-sattva is Vasudeva. Vasudeva means there is no contamination of ignorance or passion, simply sattva-guna. Tato rajas tamo bhava kama-lobhadayas ca ye, ceta etair anaviddham. When your mind and consciousness will not be contaminated by the modes of ignorance and passion, that is suddha-sattva. That is suddha-sattva. That is spiritual platform, vasudeva. Then Vasudeva will beget Krsna. Sattvam visuddham vasudeva-sabditam. So if we purify our existence, another Krsna comes or Krsna's devotees come. They come in suddha-sattva. Sattvam paramam pavitram. Then naturally there is samo damo titiksa arjavam jnanam vijnanam astikyam [Bg. 18.42]. Naturally there is brahmana behavior. And when one becomes brahmana, pure, no material contamination, then bhakti appears, after becoming brahmana or brahma-bhutah, not material platform. Brahma-bhutah prasannatma [Bg. 18.54]. In the material platform, jiva-bhutah. But in the spiritual platform, brahma-bhutah.

So aham brahmasmi: "Yes, I am already Brahman because my constitutional position is part and parcel of Parabrahman." Krsna is Parabrahman. Param brahma param dhama pavitram [Bg. 10.12], pavitram paramam, this same thing, pavitram paramam. So naturally, because we are part and parcel of the pavitram paramam, Parabrahman, we are also the same thing, a small particle, amsa. Mama amsa. Amsa and amsi. A small grain of gold, by quality it is gold, not that because it is small, it is something else. It is the same thing. Similarly, we are also pavitram, pure, but that small can fall down sometimes and becomes apavitra. So we are just like sparks of fire, so so long we are in the fire, this quality of the spark is also fire. It is also illuminating. It is also has got the quality of burning power, small quantity. But when the spark falls down from the fire it becomes extinguished, the fiery quality. That is our position. We have fallen down from the quality, and we have to revive it. Just like a person becomes diseased. Diseased is not his permanent position. That is a temporary infection. But it can be cured. If one likes, he can cure his disease and again he can become healthy. Similarly, we are fallen somehow or other. "Somehow or other" means the reason is as soon as we become independent, we deny to serve Krsna, but we deny to serve Krsna -- we want to become independent. Then immediately we are forced by the illusory energy to come under her and work under her direction. We are born servant, jivera svarupa haya-nitya-krsna-dasa [Cc. Madhya 20.108-109]. Just like this finger is part and parcel of my body. It is made for the purpose of serving me. This is the purpose. But when it is diseased When it cannot serve the body, then it is diseased. Similarly, our constitutional position is to serve Krsna. Jivera svarupa haya-nitya-krsna-dasa. That is real life. And when you don't serve Krsna or deny to serve Krsna, that is diseased condition. And that is called maya. Krsna bhuliya jiva bhoga vancha kare, pasate maya tare japatiya dhare.

So we have to cure our disease. This disease means... Krsna consciousness movement means purification of our diseased condition, infectious condition. It is not anything artificial. Nitya-siddha krsna-bhakti sradhya kabhu naya. Not that by artificial means, as they are making propaganda in Europe and America that we are brainwashing... It is not that by some means or by some artificial, what is called, hypnotism, we are making these European or American boys, girls krsna-bhakta. No. It is there already, krsna-bhakti. Otherwise why they should take to Krsna? They have got their other, I mean to say, worshipable. There is Jesus, Jesus Christ, and others. Mostly they are coming from Christian family. Why they should agree to worship Krsna? No, it is there already. It is not that because they are born in Europe and America they are different from Krsna's relationship. No.

Krsna claims, aham bija-pradah pita. Krsna has relationship not only in the human society, in animal society, in bird society, in plant society, in insect society, in demigod society. Aham bija-pradah pita, sarva-yonisu kaunteya [Bg. 14.4]. He doesn't claim that "I am interested with the Indians," or "the Hindus" or "the brahmanas," or "this." No. He claims all forms of body. So therefore these foreigners, so-called foreigners, they have got already relationship with Krsna. Nitya-siddha krsna-bhakti. Every living entity has got relationship with Krsna. Krsna says, mamaivamso jiva-bhutah [Bg. 15.7]. How they can be separate? It is not possible. But they forgot it. And this Krsna consciousness movement is to revive their original consciousness. Sravanadi-suddha-citte karaye... "Oh, I am Krsna's." As soon as this consciousness comes, he becomes perfect. It is already there. Nitya-siddha krsna-bhakti sradhya kabhu naya, sravanadi.

And this revival of original consciousness can be executed by hearing, sravanam kirtanam. It is possible. Therefore we stress on the point of sravanam kirtanam. And actually it is happening. When I went to New York there was no Krsna-bhakta at all, a single man. So how so many Krsna-bhaktas have come out? By this same process,

sravanam kirtanam visnoh
smaranam pada-sevanam
arcanam vandanam dasyam
sakhyam atma-nive...
 [SB 7.5.23]

This is bhakti process. So anywhere, in Africa also, in the village of Africa, when our Brahmananda goes there, the big, big Africans with earrings, big, big earrings, very tall, almost naked, they also dance, "Hare Krsna." So this is practical. Nitya-yukta krsna-bhakti.

So Caitanya Mahaprabhu has given this opportunity that simply by chanting... Caitanya Mahaprabhu has not manufactured it. It is mentioned in the sastra. No other... Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He does not introduce anything by manufacturing, just like nowadays these rascals do. There is no question of manufacturing. Whatever is there already in the sastra, indication, we have to follow. Yah sastra-viddhim utsrjya vartate... Otherwise there is no success. Krsna also said sastra. Krsna is also the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He refers to the Brahma-sutra. Brahma-sutra-padais caiva hetumadbhir viniscitam. So we cannot go beyond the sastra. We must follow. So in the sastra it is said, in the Kali-yuga people are so fallen, they cannot be persuaded to so many rules and regulation, but kirtanad eva krsnasya mukta-sangah param vrajet [SB 12.3.51]. Simply that is special facility for these fallen... You chant Hare Krsna regularly and you become liberated from the material contamination. And as soon as you become liberated, brahma-bhutah prasannatma na socati na kanksati, samah sarvesu bhutesu [Bg. 18.54]. We have no distinction that "Here is American," "There is European," "Here is Indian," "Here is African." No. Samah sarvesu, even animals. Samah sarvesu bhutesu. Then bhakti begins. That is practical.

So that is suddha-sattva. Samo damo satyam anugraha. The brahmana's business is anugraha, to be just like Prahlada Maharaja. Prahlada Maharaja is unhappy for others. Soce tato vimukha-cetasa maya-sukhaya bharam udvahato vimudhan: [SB 7.9.43] "I am thinking of these rascals. They are making so many gorgeous arrangements, big, big skyscraper, big, big roads, and thousands of motorcars." Maya-sukhaya. "They will enjoy this life for fifty years, sixty years, thirty years, and making big, big arrangement." Maya-sukhaya bharam udvahato vimudhan: [SB 7.9.43] "I am thinking of these rascals, that they forget the real business, what is the problem of life. They are busy in erecting, constructing big, big skyscrapers." Not only now, formerly also the vimudhan, the rascals... Visesa mudha. Krsna says, mudha. Na mam prapadyante mudha. And Prahlada Maharaja stresses more, vimudhan, first-class mudhas. Yes. Vimudhan. So anyone who does not take to Krsna consciousness and is busy in other business, he's a vimudhan. Don't remain a vimudhan. Become intelligent. Krsna ye bhaje sei bada catur. Be the first-class intelligent man and be Krsna conscious.

Thank you very much. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Nitai: "Devahuti continued: I have taken shelter of Your lotus feet because You are the only person of whom to take shelter. You are the ax which can cut the tree of material existence. I therefore offer my obeisances unto You, who are the greatest of all transcendentalists, and I inquire from You as to the relationship between man and woman and between spirit and matter."

Prabhupada:

tam tva gataham saranam saranyam
sva-bhrtya-samsara-taroh kutharam
jijnasayaham prakrteh purusasya
namami sad-dharma-vidam varistham
 [SB 3.25.11]

So Bhagavan, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the real shelter, saranam saranyam. We are seeking shelter, everyone, because we are servant constitutionally. Originally, we are servant of God. So that is our nature, to take shelter. Everyone is seeking a nice shelter. Somebody's seeking some occupation, service of some big man. Somebody's seeking oc..., servitorship of the government, government servant. But the ultimate shelter is Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Here Krsna's incarnation, Kapiladeva... Kapiladeva is also Krsna. Krsna's incarnation and Krsna, they are all the same. Svamsa, vibhinnamsa. Advaitam acyutam anadim ananta-rupam [Bs. 5.33]. Krsna has got ananta, unlimited forms, unlimited incarnations. It is said in the Bhagavatam the incarnations are expanding or going on exactly like the waves in the sea or in the river. You cannot count. So many incarnations, and all of them are Krsna. Therefore in the Brahma-samhita it is said, advaitam acyutam anadim ananta-rupam [Bs. 5.33]. Just like Krsna as arca-vigraha, Deity worship in the temple... Now, in India there are many thousands of temples. Now outside of India we are increasing not many thousands, but many hundreds. So Krsna is expanding. All these Krsnas, They are not different; They are one. Advaita. Krsna in the Vaikuntha and Krsna in this temple, They are not different. Advaita. Advaitam acyutam anadim ananta. Although ananta, They are not different. Goloka eva nivasaty akhilatma-bhutah [Bs. 5.37].

Krsna is staying in everyone's heart. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. Sarvasya caham hrdi sannivistah [Bg. 15.15]. Krsna says, "I am residing in everyone's heart." He is witness. Upadrasta anumanta. Upadrasta. He is seeing all our activities. We cannot hide anything. Therefore we get the resultant action of our karma. Because the witness is Krsna Himself within your heart, how you can avoid? Upadrasta, anumanta. And without Krsna's permission, you cannot do anything. So why Krsna gives permission to do something wrong? Because we want to do it. We persist. Krsna does not say that you do anything else than to "Surrender to Me." He says only these things, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam... [Bg. 18.66]. But we want to do something else. But anything else, you cannot do without Krsna's permission. Exactly like the child. The child persists to do something, but still wants to take permission from the mother: "Mother, I want this. I want to do this. I want to do this." Mother sometimes says, "No, no, you don't do this." But when he persists, "All right, you do it." It is like that. We are... Sarvasya caham hrdi sannivisto mattah smrtir jnanam apohanam ca [Bg. 15.15]. Krsna says, mattah smrtir jnanam apohanam ca. I wanted to do something, and Krsna sanctions, and we do. But we do it at our own risk. Krsna is not responsible. But without sanction of Krsna you cannot do anything. That is a fact.

So here it is said, sva-bhrtya-samsara-taroh. Actually, we are constitutionally servant of Krsna. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, ayi nanda-tanuja patitam kinkaram mam bhavambudhau. Ayi nanda-tanuja patitam kinkaram mam bhavambudhau. What is the...?

Yasomati-nandana: Visame bhavambudhau.

Prabhupada: Ah! Visame bhavambudhau. That is our position. Actually we are servant of God, servant of Krsna. We are servant in every... Even though we declare independence, we are not independent. We are servant. That is a false declaration, that "We are independent." No. There cannot be independence. Therefore this is self-realization. As Caitanya Mahaprabhu says,

ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram
patitam mam visame bhavambudhau
krpaya tava pada-pankaja-
sthita-dhuli-sadrsam vicintaya
 [Cc. Antya 20.32, Siksastaka 5]

"My dear Lord, Krsna, the son of Nanda Maharaja..." Patitam kinkaram mam: "I am Your eternal servant, kinkara." Kinkara means servant. "Now, somehow or other, I am fallen in this ocean of nescience, samsara." Samsara-davanala-lidha-loka **. Unless one has got the knowledge what is this position, where we are staying, we cannot understand. That is called moha. We have discussed this. Illusion. We are under illusion. So Devahuti says, sva-bhrtya-samsara-taroh kutharam. In the Bhagavad-gita the tree is described, asvattha tree. So asvattha, as we have got experience, the banyan tree, the root is very strong, very strong. So it is also compared, this material world is compared with the asvattha tree, banyan tree. Very strong root. So... But any tree can be cut with an ax, kutharam. So that kutharam, if we take shelter at the lotus feet of Krsna, that is the real kutharam, or ax, to cut the strong root of material existence. Sva-bhrtya-samsara-taroh kutharam. Tam tva gataham saranam saranyam. Gato mukundam saranam saranyam.

There is another similar verse that... Because we have given up the servitorship of Krsna, we are servant of so many other things. We are obliged to serve, rni. Rni means debtor. Devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitrnam [SB 11.5.41]. We are debtor to so many persons. We are debtor to the demigods. Just like the sun is demigod. He's giving you heat and light. You are not paying any bill, but you are ad..., taking the advantage of the sunlight and sun heat. Now, if you take the advantage of electric light and heat, you have to pay bill. But here we don't pay bill. That means we are becoming debtor. If we don't pay bill anywhere, then we become debtor. So we are debtor to so many demigods. The sun is supplying heat and light. The king of heaven, Indra, he is supplying water. These rascals, they say it is coming by nature. It may come from nature, but nature is controlled. Just like we are getting water. If somebody says, "Oh, what is that? It is coming from the water tank. So where is the question of paying taxes or rent?" No. The water tank is being filled up by the Municipality. If you don't pay tax, it will be cut off. Similarly, don't think that the water is coming as your father's property. No. You are becoming debtor. You are becoming debtor. Therefore, if you don't pay debts, if you don't perform sacrifices, then there will be scarcity of water. And one day it will come there will be no water. That you expect. Because you are not paying any tax. You are thinking, "Water is coming, my father's property." No. Your father's property... That's all right. But you are not father's son at the present moment. You are maya's son. You don't care for your father.

Therefore father said, mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa-caracaram [Bg. 9.10]. Krsna says, the supreme father, aham bija-pradah pita [Bg. 14.4]. He's the supreme father. You don't care for father. Therefore... The nature is working under the direction of the supreme father. That's a fact. So if you do not care for your father, then the result will be nature will reduce supply. Reduce supply. Nature will not allow to the demons to flourish. No. That is not allowed. Tan aham dvisatah kruran ksipamy ajasram andha-yonisu [Bg. 16.19]. The demons are always liable to be punished. Some big, big demons like Ravana, Hiranyakasipu, the Lord personally comes to punish them. Otherwise, the ordinary demons, they are punished by the laws of nature. Krsna does not require to come to punish these petty demons. But when there is big, big demons like Ravana, like Hiranyakasipu, like Kamsa, then Krsna, or Lord Ramacandra, They come to punish them.

Therefore we have to follow the rules and regulation. That is called sad-dharma. Dharma means the laws given by God. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. Bhagavat-pranitam. It is given by Bhagavan, the laws. That laws, laws means they are written in books. Because... Just like Manu-samhita. There are many other books, Vedic literature, what is dharma. But real dharma is... Just like law means to obey Krsna, or God. Krsna means God. Krsnas tu bhagavan svayam [SB 1.3.28]. So dharma means if one does not care for Krsna, or God, that is not religion. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat... [SB 6.3.19]. You cannot make your law at home. Law means the law given by the government. Similarly, dharma means the orders given by God. That is dharma. You cannot manufacture, that "We have manufactured this dharma." That is not dharma. That is, in the Bhagavata, is called cheating. Dharmah projjhita-kaitavah atra: "The so-called dharmas, which are cheating the public in the name of dharma, such kind of dharma is kicked out from the Srimad-Bhagavatam." Dharmah projjhita. Projjhita means prakrsta-rupena ujjhita. Just like you sweep over the floor and the dust throw away. Similarly, in the Srimad-Bhagavatam the real dharma is there. Real dharma. Dharma artha kama moksa [SB 4.8.41, Cc. Adi 1.90], this is ordinary dharma. Real dharma is, as Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. That is real dharma. And all other dharmas, so-called dharmas, they are simply cheating. Because that will not benefit anybody, the followers or the dictators. So real dharma is... And Srimad-Bhagavatam begins from there. if you accept the principles of Bhagavad-gita, that is the preliminary study, A-B-C-D of dharma, and if you accept this principle, that to surrender to Krsna, saranam saranyam...

But this sense comes after many, many births. Not very easily. Bahunam janmanam ante jnanavan mam prapadyate [Bg. 7.19]. After many, many births struggling, when one comes to real perfection of knowledge, he surrenders to Krsna. Why? Vasudevah sarvam iti sa mahatma sudurlabhah [Bg. 7.19]. Because at that time he understands perfectly that Vasudeva, Krsna, is everything. This is Bhagavad-gita lesson. Bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh kham mano buddhir eva ca prakrtir bhinna me astadha [Bg. 7.4]. Apareyam itas tu viddhi me prakrtim param, jiva-bhutam maha... Everything is Krsna's energy. Everything is Krsna's energy. Sarvedam akhilam jagat. Parasya brahmanah saktih. Parasya brahmanah saktih. Whatever we are seeing, that is exhibition or manifestation of two energies. Just like the sun has got two energies, heat and light. Everyone knows. Similarly, Krsna has got many energies.

So out of many energies, three energies have been taken into account. One is the external energy, another the internal energy, and the other is the marginal energy. The external energy is this material world, bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh kham mano buddhir eva ca. This is material world. And internal energy is the spiritual world. And marginal energy-we, the living entities. Marginal means we may remain in this material world or we may remain in the spiritual world, living entities. Therefore in the Bhagavad-gita there are two kinds of living entities who are living in this material... Ksara, they have fallen down. Fallen down in this... And attracted in this tree of samsara, banyan tree. This is described in the Fifteenth Chapter of... So asanga-kutharena. We have to disassociate with this tree. Asanga-kutharena. By detachment. To cut this tree, it is very difficult. But we have to become detached. Detached means... There is a Bengali proverb: dhari mach nacoi pane.(?) Means that "I'll catch the fish but will not touch the water." That is, that intelligence required. You see in the beach... Here we do not see many, many. But in America we see on the beach, old men. They have got no business. They simply waste their time catching fish. Yes. But they are not very interested in this way, nacoi pane.(?) They also touch water also.

So we have go live in this material world in such a way that we shall do everything for Krsna, but we'll have no attachment for this material world. We may have big, big buildings, big, big temples, but we should not be attached to this. But for Krsna's sake we must have. Because it is Krsna's property. That is our mission. Isavasyam idam sarvam [Iso mantra 1]. We have to teach people that "Everything belongs to Krsna. Why you are occupying it unnecessarily?" Stena eva sa ucyate [Bg. 3.12]. "You are thief. Why you are claiming Krsna's property, 'This is my land, America,' 'This is my land, India,' 'This is my land, Pakistan'?" It is not your land; it is Krsna's land. You are imagining, "This is my land." You come here for, say, twenty years, twenty-five years, fifty years, and fight between yourselves, "This is my Pakistan," "This is my Bharatavarsa," and fight. And when you die you do not claim either Pakistani or Indian or American or European. You flat, fall flat. That's all. And then taken away this body and thrown. That's all.

This is called maya, moha, illusion. Aham mameti [SB 5.5.8]. We have discussed this verse. This is illusion. Nothing belongs to us, but unnecessarily we are claiming, "This is my land," "This is my country," "This is my home," "This is my family," "This is my, my, my..." Mama. This is illusion. And in this way we are attached to this tree, samsara-taroh, from one branch to another. Now I am Indian. I may be American next life, or I may be something else. I may be a cat, I may be a dog, or I may be something else. I may be a cat, I may be a dog, or I may be a demigod. That will depend on my work. But after death, you are completely under the grip of this material nature. Your dictation will not be that "Make me like this, make me again Indian," or "Again, again make me the nationalist of this country or that country." No. After death, everything is finished. You are no more nationalist or this proprietor or head or this nothing. But this is going on. So long we are in a position, falsely we are thinking and we are attached and we are suffering. This is the disease.

Therefore she prays that sva-bhrtya-samsara-taroh kutharam. If we transfer our attachment to Krsna, then we can understand that vasudevah sarvam iti [Bg. 7.19]. It is not my land, not your land. It is all Vasudeva's property. That knowledge comes. When comes? Bahunam janmanam ante [Bg. 7.19]. But we are giving that knowledge immediately. The knowledge which you are expecting after many thousands of births, this Krsna consciousness movement is giving you immediately. If you are intelligent man, you should take it, take advantage of it. We are preaching that "Everything belongs to Krsna. Everything should be utilized for Krsna's purpose, Krsna's benefit. He is the beneficiary. Then everything is all right." If one comes to this knowledge-vasudevah sarvam iti... [Bg. 7.19], isavasyam idam sarvam [Iso mantra 1] -- sa mahatma sudurlabhah, then immediately you become the greatest mahatma. Mahatma does not mean simply having a big beard and some dress, saffron dress. No. This knowledge, that nothing belongs to...

bhoktaram yajna-tapasam
sarva-loka-mahesvaram
suhrdam sarva-bhutanam
jnatva mam santim rcchati
 [Bg. 5.29]

This is the formula. "I am the bhokta." The all best foodstuff should be offered to Krsna. That is arcana-vidhi. First-class foodstuff, all sandesa, rasagulla, kacuri and... Best, best foodstuff. Krsna is satisfied, of course... If you haven't got very nice foodstuff, Krsna can be also offered also whatever you have got. "Whatever" means not anything beyond the jurisdiction: patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati [Bg. 9.26]. You can give Him little fruit, little flower, little leaf, little water. That you can collect without any price; anywhere it is available. Anyone's garden you can go, and if you say, "My dear sir, I'll little flower and leaf for Krsna," nobody will ask you, "No, don't take." "Take it." Still, at least in India. In also, USA also. So that you can collect. If you haven't got to offer... But offer something to Krsna. That is required. Bhaktya.

That is bhakti. That offering is not required... But Krsna is not hungry, that He's asking from you little fruit, little flower, little... He is feeding... Eko bahunam yo vidadhati kaman. He is supplying all the necessities of everyone. So why He's begging from you? Because He wants that you love Him. That is Krsna's want. You are suffering in this material world, you are entangled in this tree from one branch to another, rotating and suffering. So Krsna wants that you do not suffer. You give up this business of jumping like monkey from this branch to that branch, but come to Him and surrender to Him. Saranam saranyam. When this knowledge comes, that is perfect knowledge. Gato mukundam saranam saranyam parihrtya kartam.

devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitrnam
na kinkaro nayam rni ca rajan
sarvatmana yah saranam saranyam
gato mukundam parihrtya kartam
 [SB 11.5.41]

If... This is required. Krsna also says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. But if you take shelter of the lotus feet of Krsna, then you are no more debtor to anyone. You are no more debtor. Nayam rni na kinkarah.

So this is the solution. Otherwise, you are debtor to so many persons: devata, rsi, devarsi, bhuta, all living entities, apta, friends, relative, and general people, pitrnam, the family in which you are born. Now nation also. That is nrnam, apta, national. So you are debtor to so many persons, but if you surrender to Krsna, Krsna says,... You may think that "If I surrender to Krsna and give up all our duties, then I may remain debtor and I will have to suffer." No. Krsna gives you assurance, aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah. "I'll give you relief." That is wanted. Therefore Devahuti takes shelter of Kapiladeva. And she says that "You are the kutharam, You are the ax to make me detached." Just like the tree, when it is cut into two pieces, they become detached. Similarly, if our attachment is cut into pieces, two pieces, then the other portion becomes free from this material attachment.

Therefore this, to develop this detachment... Bhakti, bhakti-yoga, or the path of bhakti, means detachment. Bhakti, they are... That is vairagya-vidya-nija-bhakti-yogam [Cc. Madhya 6.254]. Bhakti-yogam means vairagya-vidya, the learning in the science of detachment. That is bhakti-yoga. Vairagya-vidya-nija-bhakti-yogam. This verse was composed by Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya. When he understood Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he composed one hundred verses. He was a very learned logician of India, Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya. So some of the verses are available. Because when the verses were offered to Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He torn it and... Because He was a sannyasi. That was His another vairagya. Anyway... So this verse is that "You are, Sir, Caitanya Mahaprabhu, You are the same Krsna. You formerly came to teach people this vairagya." Sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66]. This parityajya means vairagya. "Don't care for all this material world. Surrender unto Me." This is vairagya. Jnana and vairagya. Vasudeve bhagavati bhakti-yogah prayojitah [SB 1.2.7]. Bhakti-yogah prayojitah. If you apply bhakti-yoga to Vasudeva-vasudevah sarvam iti [Bg. 7.19] -- on this platform, then janayaty asu vairagyam. Asu, "very soon." This is the sign of bhakti-yoga. Janayaty asu. If a person is advancing in bhakti-yoga, the result will be that he is detached from material attraction. That is the sign.

Just like these European, American boys. They are born to enjoy material happiness. They are, in their country, the affluence of material happiness, money and women, they are thrown in the street. You pick up as much as you like. But they are now vairagya, because they are devotees of Vasudeva. They have no more attachment. This is bhakti-yoga. Bhakti-yoga means vairagya, detachment for material enjoyment. That is the sign. Bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktir anyatra syat [SB 11.2.42]. Not that "I am a big, big devotee, but I have got very great attachment for material enjoyment." That is not bhakti. This is the sign. If you have got bhakti, then you will have no attachment for material enjoyment. That is the test. Bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktih. Param drstva nivartate [Bg. 9.59]. In the Bhagavad-gita it is... Param drstva. Param means better, superior things; drstva, by seeing, these lower inferior things is rejected. That is... Two things cannot go on.

So because we cannot do it ourself, by our own endeavor, therefore we have to take shelter of Krsna. He will help. Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami [Bg. 18.66]. He'll help. Our only business is to take shelter. Therefore Devahuti says, gataham saranam saranyam. "You are the only shelter. Therefore I am taking shelter. And You can cut my attachment for this material life. And why You shall do it? Because I am Your eternal servant." Bhrtya. Somehow or other... Anadi karama phale padi' bhavarnava-jale, taribare na dekhi upaya. Bhaktivinoda Thakura, that "Somehow or other, I am fallen..." The same prayer as Caitanya Mahaprabhu said:

ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram
patitam mam visame bhavambudhau
krpaya tava pada-pankaja-
sthita-dhuli-sadrsam vicintaya
 [Cc. Antya 20.32, Siksastaka 5]

Dhuli-sadrsam. Dhuli means dust, and bhavambudhi is water. So if you are thrown into the water, you may be a very big swimmer, but it is a struggle. It is. There is no peace. Therefore in this material world, however expert you may be to deal with this material world, it is simply struggle. You cannot live here peacefully. That is not possible. Even you become nonviolent, if you don't harm anybody... In our country the ideal man was Mahatma Gandhi. Still, he was killed. Just see. This is material world. This is material world. He was doing harm to nobody, but he was killed. So bhavambudhi, in this material world, or ocean, you may be very expert in swimming, but that does not mean you'll be peaceful. That is not possible. But if you are taken away from the water even one inch, you'll find peace. Therefore the prayer is tava pada-pankaja-sthita-dhuli-sadrsam. Just as from the water, if you are taken one inch up, then you become, you feel relieved, similarly, some way or other, if you become one of the particles of the dust of lotus feet of Krsna, then you are liberated.

That is stated here: sva-bhrtya-samsara-taroh kutharam, jijnasayaham prakrteh purusasya namami sad-dharma-vidam varistham. Sad-dharma. Not sad-dharma. Asato ma sad gama. So sad-dharma required. The, in this material world the so-called dharmas, this Hindu dharma, Muslim dharma and Christian dharma and Buddhist dharma and so many... They are not sad-dharma. They are asad-dharma. "Because I am born in the family of a Christian, I am Christian." "Because I am born in the family of Hindu, I am Hindu." And next time I may (be) born in the family of a dog. There is no dharma. So these are not sad-dharma. These are all asad-dharma, for the time being. Asad means "that will not stay." You are Hindu. How long you are Hindu? Say, fifty years. Or you are Indian. How long you are Indian? Say, fifty, sixty, hundred years. But again you have to become something else. That we do not know. We are working very hard, "I am Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am Indian," "I am American." These upadhi. But the upadhi may be changed next moment. At any moment. So what is your real dharma? This is temporary dharma for the body. What is your real dharma? Real dharma is sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. That is sad-dharma. That is sad-dharma. That will continue eternally.

So sad-dharma... Here it is said, namami sad-dharma-vidam varistham: "There are many propounder of sad-dharma. But actually, You are the best of the propounders of the sad-dharma because You know the reality." And that is the actual reality. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam... [Bg. 18.66]. That is sad-dharma. So the Gosvamis worked... Sad-dharma-samsthapakau. Nana-sastra-vicaranaika-nipunau sad-dharma-samsthapakau. So these Gosvamis, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's direct disciples, they tried to establish sad-dharma, and we are trying to follow their footprints, footsteps, to establish real dharma all over the world. This is Krsna consciousness movement.

Thank you very much. (end)
