Prabhupada: Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto Six, Chapter One, verse number twenty? Is that the number, twenty? (devotees repeat)

atra codaharantimam
itihasam puratanam
dutanam visnu-yamayoh
samvadas tam nibodha me
 [SB 6.1.20]

"In this regard, learned scholars and saintly persons describe a very old historical incident involving a discussion between the order carriers of Lord Visnu and those of Yamaraja. Please hear of this from me."

So Yamaraja is the superintendent or the judge for considering what kind of punishment should be given to a certain sinful person. After death, those who are sinful, they are taken to Yamaraja for judgment, what kind of punishment one has to be given. And those who are pious devotees, they are taken charge by the Visnuduta. I think the Christian doctrine, that in this life either you go to hell or go to heaven. Is it not?

Devotee: Yes.

Prabhupada: That is nice. The same thing. This human form of life is a chance. Actually, in this material world we are all suffering. Duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15]. You cannot make it a happy place. That is not possible. Krsna says, who has created this material world, He says, duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15]. Duhkha means unhappiness; alayam means place. Duhkhalayam asasvatam. That is also temporary. Duhkhalayam asasvatam, napnuvanti mahatmanam samsiddhim paramam gatah [Bg. 8.15]. So this is place of duhkhalayam. Any commonsense man can understand that Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita... You may challenge, "Where is the unhappiness? We are very happy." Madmen. Krsna points out, "No, it is not place of happiness." Why it is not place of happiness? Now, janma-mrtyu-jara vyadhi-duhkha-dosanudarsanam [Bg. 13.9]. Why don't you see the real unhappiness? This is real duhkha, or unhappiness. What is that? Janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi. You have to die. You have to take birth within the womb with so much risk that even your mother can kill you. Is it very happiness? At the present moment the mother... When the child sleeps very peacefully, that "I am on the lap of my mother," now the time has come when the mother is killing the child. So is it very happiness place? That you cannot trust even your mother, what to speak of others. The time has come, degraded, that... Naturally a child, he thinks, "I am safe now with my mother." But the Kali-yuga is so cruel that even with mother you are not safe. And still you say it is a place of happiness? This is called illusion. It is not place.

So this is going on. Not only in the human form of life, in the animal form of life, in trees and so on, so on, it is going on. Eight million, four hundred... So this is a chance given, human form of life. Just like after imprisonment you are again given little freedom. You cannot be completely free; however, you may declare that "I belong to free nation..." Free nation means you are free, certainly, but not absolutely free. You are dependent on the state laws. Similarly, nobody can be free. That is not possible.

prakrteh kriyamanani
gunaih karmani sarvasah
ahankara-vimudhatma
kartaham iti manyate
 [Bg. 3.27]

These rascals, they are thinking, "I am free." No. Nobody is free. But because we are not free, that does not mean there is no freedom. There is freedom. That is not in this world. That is in the spiritual world. Just like mirage, the desert: the animal does not know that there is no water; it is simply reflection by the sunshine. There is some reflection. There is no water. So a man does not run after such false water, but animal runs, and they lost in the running after. Similarly, this material world is reflection of the spiritual world. There is no happiness. Happiness is there in the spiritual world, but we are running after it, being ignorant. But that does not mean... Although we are running after false water, it does not mean there is no water. Water is there, but not in the desert. That is intelligence. So happiness is there, but not in this material world. It is in the spiritual world.

So we have forgotten. There is no education. So anyway, nature gives us the chance. So either you take the Biblical truth or Vedic truth... So this is... The human form is given to us. Now you make your choice: whether you are going to hell or you are going to heaven. That's a fact. If you want, you can go to back to home, back to Godhead, or if you want to remain in this material world and go under the rules and regulation of birth and death, then make your choice. That is also explained in the Bhagavad-gita.

yanti deva-vrata devan
pitrn yanti pitr-vratah
bhutejya yanti bhutani
mad-yajino 'pi yanti mam
 [Bg. 9.25]

So generally the karmis, they want happiness in this life, and if he is intelligent enough, if he believes in the next life, then he makes some provision for next life. Next life is there. Only the rascals, they cannot understand. It is very simple. Next life is there. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. There is no doubt about it. So next life you can prepare in this life, where you want to go. If you go, want to go to the higher planetary systems, you can go. Yanti deva-vrata devan pitrn yanti... [Bg. 9.25]. If you want to go to the Pitrloka... Don't think like the so-called scientists that only this planet is full of living beings and other all vacant. No, that is not the fact. Every planet, it is congested with living entities. That information given there. That is... The whole bunch of universe is just like a tree. At night you have seen, it is rotating. On each and every planet there is life, full of life. Don't think there is no life. There is life. Why not there life? If this planet contains so many living entities, why not in other planets? So from Vedic scripture we understand.

So we can go anywhere. There are three divisions: urdhva, madhya, and adhah -- upper planetary system, middle planetary system, and lower planetary system. So urdhvam gacchanti sattva-sthah [Bg. 14.18]. If you practice here how to remain in the modes of goodness... Goodness means brahminical qualification: satya samo damo titiksa arjava, to become truthful, controlling the senses, controlling the mind, satya sama titiksa, tolerant; satya samo damo titiksa arjava, simple, no duplicity; jnanam, full knowledge of everything; vijnanam, practical application; jnanam vijnanam astikyam... Astikyam means to accept Vedic literature as fact, not imagination. That is called astikyam, or theistic. Astikyam brahma-karma svabhava-jam [Bg. 18.42]. This is called to live in the modes of goodness. So our Krsna consciousness movement is to bring every person to the platform of goodness, not even on the platform of passion, no, because urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha [Bg. 14.18]. At least, if you remain on the platform of goodness, then you can be promoted to the higher planetary system. Svarga, begins... Higher planetary system begins from the sun, moon, and there are others, Janaloka, Tapoloka, Maharloka, like that, up to Satyaloka, Brahmaloka. So this is the chance. So now you make your selection. Either you go in the upper planetary system or remain where you are or go down in animal life also.

So this is the chance. We should not neglect. So if we misuse this human form of life like animals, then we are punishable. Then you have to go to the Yamaraja and he'll judge what kind of body you'll get. Karmana daiva-netrena [SB 3.31.1]. Just like if you are criminal, then you are put into the magistrate's court and the magistrate decides what kind of punishment you must be given. So don't think you are, we are, every one of us, independent. No. No independent. And after death you are completely under the grip of material nature. That time you cannot say, "I don't care for anyone." No, you have to care. You can falsely become proud so long this body is there. You can talk all nonsense. But when the body is finished, now you are completely under the control of nature. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani. Then your quality will be judged. Gunaih karmani. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27]. Everyone is under the control of this prakrti, but rascals, ahankara-vimudhatma, too much bodily concept of life, bewildered, vimudha... Visesa mudha, first-class rascal, vimudha. Vimudhatma kartaham iti manyate. He says that "Whatever I like, I can do," karta. No. That is not possible. So this life is preparation for the next life. You can prepare. It is in your hand. It is in your hand. God has given you the superior intelligence better than the animals. The animals are simply interested eating, sleeping, mating and fearing. So we have got better intelligence, so we must utilize it. Therefore Narottama dasa Thakura sings, you know, those who are, the song, hari hari biphale janama gonainu: "My Lord, I have simply wasted my life." Why? Manusya-janama paiya, radha-krsna na bhajiya, janiya suniya visa-khainu. "I got this nice human form of body for understanding, worshiping Radha-Krsna. Now I did not do anything, that means knowingly I have taken poison."

So if we misuse this human form of life only like animals, eating, sleeping, sex and fearing, then we are spoiling our life. We must prepare next life. If we don't, then after death we have to go to the Yamaraja, and he will decide what kind of next body... Body will change. Krsna says in the Bhagavad... Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. After death you have to change the body. As you are changing from childhood to boyhood, boyhood to youthhood, similarly this old body, when it is no more usable, that means death. But the subtle body, mind, intelligence, that is... We have got proof. At night this body is silent, but your mind, intelligence and ego takes you somewhere. You dream that "I have come to here." Sometimes we dream, "I am flying in the sky," or gone to some forest or some friend's house or so many things. "I am talking with a beautiful girl or beautiful man." So this dream we every day see. So that means when this body stops, the gross body, the subtle body is there. Why don't you believe it? Unless the subtle body is working, how do you dream? The dreaming means subtle body is working. So transmigration of the soul means the soul is twice covered -- subtle body and gross body -- just like shirt and coat. So when this gross body is finished, the subtle body is there. It takes you to another body. The subtle body with the semina of the father, it is injected in the mother's womb, and then again you will develop another body. This is the process of transmigration. So this body, how you'll be transferred to another body, that will be judged by the Yamaraja. Daiva-netrena. Karmana daiva-netrena [SB 3.31.1]. By our activities we shall be judged. Those who are criminal, they will be judged, not that everyone will be judged. So, and because those who are devotees, they are... Mad-yajino 'pi yanti mam [Bg. 9.25]. Those who have devoted their life, dedicated their life only in Krsna consciousness, they are sure. Krsna says, tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti [Bg. 4.9]. That is sure. They are going back to home, back to Godhead. And those who are not dedicated or taken to Krsna consciousness, they are criminals. They will be taken to the Yamaraja's court, and Yamaraja will decide what kind of body. There are 8,400,000 different forms of body, and he will be given a certain type of body. This is called transmigration of the soul.

And so Sukadeva Gosvami is going to give example from the history about the Ajamila, how he was in the beginning very good boy, brahmana, and then, under the influence of a prostitute, he fell down and became most degraded, and then again, because in the past he had some good asset of spiritual life... That is described in the Bhagavata, svalpam apy asya dharmasya trayate mahato bhayat. Spiritual life is so nice, Krsna consciousness. If one has executed even for a short time, it may help to deliver him from the greatest dangerous way of life, and that history will be recited by Sukadeva Gosvami. Kanyakubje dvijah kascid dasi-patir ajamilah. Dasi patir ajamilah, namna nasta-sadacaro dasyah samsarga-dusitah. This is the beginning of the story, that in Kanyakubja... Kanyakubja is... Still the place is there in India. Kanyakubja is a very famous place. It is near Kanpur. There is a place, Kanpur. So there... Kanyakubje dvijah kascid. He was a brahmana, but he became under the clutches of a prostitute. And how nasta-sadacara, how he lost his brahminical qualification, samsarga-dusitah, by the association of prostitute, so this history will be recited. So tomorrow we shall speak of this.

Thank you very much. (end)

So yesterday we talked about Pariksit Maharaja. So he was cursed by a brahmana boy. So he prepared himself for death. What was the preparation? That he left immediately his kingdom and the kingdom was divided among his sons. He was young man, not very old, but he understood, "Now, within seven days, I will have to die." So immediately he left home and went to the bank of the Ganges. He was situated... His capital was what is now called New Delhi. Formerly it was known as Hastinapura. The another name of Hastina..., New Delhi, is there still, and there is a very, very old fort. They say that this fort belonged to the Pandavas, Maharaja Pariksit. They are keeping just like in Rome they are keeping old buildings. So apart from historical reference... So Maharaja Pariksit, he was king, emperor of the world. So he was preparing for dying. Many, many, from all over the world, saintly persons, kings, even some demigods from other planets, they came to see him.

So what to do at the time of death? One has to change. Death means change of this body. The modern civilization, they do not know it. That is the first understanding of spiritual knowledge, that we change our body. I am spirit soul, every one of us, spirit soul, even the animals and the trees and plants and aquatics, any living being. There are 8,400,000 different forms of living being. Of all of them, the human form is considered the best. Best means it has got..., the human form has got developed consciousness. Developed consciousness means they can understand what is past, what is future, what is present. Especially to understand his position as spirit soul, to understand God, to understand what is His relation with God, and what he should do in that relationship -- these things are understandable in the human form of life, not otherwise. We cannot invite dogs and cats to come here and hear about Srimad-Bhagavatam. No. That is not possible. But a human being, he can hear. He can understand.

So this is our special opportunity after evolutionary process passing through eight million..., at least eight million different forms of life. The list is there in Padma Purana. Jalaja nava-laksani: "Nine lakhs' forms of life within the water." There is animal in the water which is called timingila. It is so big that... We have got experience. The whale fish is very big. That whale fish is taken up by this timingila fish just like a big fish swallows a small fish. Such big, big fishes are there within the... They do not come visible to the..., but there are. We get information. Timingila. Many very big, big animals are there within the water, deep. So there are nine lakhs, 900,000 forms of life within the water. And then jalaja nava-laksani sthavara laksa-vimsati. Then... Sthavara means "stand up." We have got experience. I do not know whether you have got. In our school days, if a boy is making trouble, the teacher will ask him, "Stand up on the bench." So the stand-up punishment... The trees, the plants, they are stand-up punishment. (laughter) "Stand up here for five thousand years." You see? There are many trees, they are standing up for five thousand years, seven thousand years. In California I have seen one tree, they say it is seven thousand years old. So just imagine. If the teacher punishes a boy to stand up for few minutes, how much troublesome it is, and if one is ordered to stand up for seven thousand years, so just imagine what is the punishment. So that is punishment. These trees and plants, because they committed very sinful activities, they... Naked, to become naked, is also another criminal activity. Therefore, by nature's law, the trees, the, they are standing up naked. They do not dress. Similarly, if a human being does not dress, does not cover, then what is the difference between the trees and the human being? It is the human being who requires to be properly dressed. That is the law of nature. If we violate, then the punishment is: "All right, you become tree and stand up naked for ten thousand years." This is the nature's law. You cannot violate the nature's law. And we are completely under the laws of nature. You cannot say that "I don't care for." No. You may say, foolishly, but you are, you are. Just like nature's law is that you must die. Can you say, "No, I shall not die"? Can you say boldly, "No, no, I shall not die. I am now scientific. I have got my science, I shall not die." The nature's law is: you must die.

So in this way you should understand how strongly you are controlled by the nature's law. But foolishly we say, "No." That is not. Just like this Maharaja Pariksit, such a powerful king, he is now somehow or other cursed by a brahmana boy that "You must die within seven days." So he is preparing. He has got time, seven days. But what we have got? We haven't got even seven minutes' warning. At any moment we can die. And what we are doing? That is the foolishness. One must be ready, that "I will have to die. And 'die' means I will have to accept another body." Now, there are so many forms of body. As I was explaining aquatics, 900,000, then trees. As the water dries, the vegetation comes. You have got experience. That is the nature's process. And after vegetation, then the flies, insects, moving, up to trees and plants, not moving. Then they move -- flies, grasshoppers. And they turn into birds again, very freely flying. And there are many, many big birds in the sky, eagles. Some of the eagles, you have got experience. There are monkey-eating eagles. They capture the monkey. And there are eagles elephant-eating. (laughter) We get all this information. Elephant, they will capture elephant and take it away. (laughter) Just imagine. It is no joking. This is a fact.

So there are so many birds, eagle birds, they fly, and they go from one planet to another. They are resting... Just like a bird you see, they fly from one tree to another tree. So their resting place is one planet to another. Just see. You are trying to go to the moon planet bogusly. I'll say bogusly because you could not go there. The moon planet is far away from the sun planet. So it is not possible to go there by the so-called jets plane. No. It is far, far away. It is sixteen hundred thousand miles away from the sun. The modern scientist calculation is ninety-three million miles, the sun is situated, and above that, sixteen hundred thousand miles up, there is moon planet. So by the Vedic calculation it is not possible to go there by the method we are attempting. That is not possible. And the proof is that why, if they are going to the moon planet, why they cannot stay there? Now, the argument is that "There is no vegetation. The atmosphere is different, where living being cannot stay." They say like that. But from the Vedic information we understand that moon planet influence the vegetation in all other planets. So if the moon planet helps vegetation in all other planets, how it is that there is no vegetation? So there are many thing, contradiction, and practically we see, they are going to the moon planet, but they cannot stay, uselessly going and coming. So let them do that, but we have got our other inform..., other sources of information, that we cannot go to the moon planet. It is not possible.

So anyway, the nature's law is very strict. We cannot surpass. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita:

daivi hy esa gunamayi
mam maya duratyaya
mam eva ye prapadyante
mayam etam taranti te
 [Bg. 7.14]

You cannot go, or you may go, but so far you have not gone or you have not been successful. But there are many, many other planets. That we see at night, many, many. But spiritual process is so made... Krsna says, mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14]. Maya, the material nature, is very, very strict, but if one becomes Krsna conscious, fully surrendered to Krsna, he surpasses the laws of material nature. That is possible. Mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14]. How? Just like we are trying to go to this planet or that planet, but we have been unsuccessful. But if you become Krsna conscious, then immediately after death you immediately go to the Krsna planet, immediately. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9]. So we Krsna conscious people, we believe in the statement of Krsna and act accordingly. So we have no difficulty, because we are under the direction of Krsna. So we are assured, if we actually act according to the instruction of Krsna, then we are sure to go back to Krsna, back to Godhead, without any difficulty. Krsna says,

janma karma ca me divyam
yo janati tattvatah
tyaktva deham punar janma
naiti mam eti kaunteya
 [Bg. 4.9]

So we believe. We blindly believe, blindly or knowingly. It is not possible knowingly, but if we accept Krsna's argument, then we have to believe. Krsna does not say anything without any reason. Nobody says. No authority says like that. So what to speak of Krsna? Krsna is the greatest authority. If we blindly accept His statement, that is also good, and if we apply our reason and argument, that also you can do. Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita,

dehino 'smin yatha dehe
kaumaram yauvanam jara
tatha dehantara-praptir
dhiras tatra na muhyati
 [Bg. 2.13]

He is giving very practical example that because the soul is within this body, therefore bodily changes are taking place. Now, suppose if a child is born dead. That... You can keep it by some method, preservative method, but it will not grow. One can understand very easily. Because the soul is there, therefore the child from the womb of his mother grows gradually. Grows means changing body. Everything, information, is there in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. The man and woman, father and mother, after sex the two secretion is emulsified and it takes a form like a pea. And the small living entity, the measurement is also given. Kesagra-sata-bhagasya satadha kalpitah: [Cc. Madhya 19.140] "One ten-thousandth part of the upper portion point of hair." You know the point of hair. Now divided into ten thousand part and take one part. That is the form of the soul. That little spark takes shelter into that emulsified pea, and because the soul is there within, it develops from the mother's womb. The child does not develop all of a sudden. Every mother knows that. It grows gradually, little by little, little by little. When it is seven months, then it is further..., it moves. So in this way the... Krsna says that don't take this body as the living being. Dehinah asmin dehe. Within this body, the soul is there. So everyone can understand.

Now, because the soul is there, therefore the body is changing. Everyone knows that he was a child. I know, you know. I remember my childhood body or my boyhood body, my youthhood body. I am old man. I remember them, that "I was doing as a young man like this. I was doing as a boy like this. I was jumping. Now I cannot jump. Why? The body has changed." The body has changed. It is very good logic. The same "I" am there. I was a boy. I was jumping. Now I am old man. I have changed my body. I cannot do that. I will have to take the stick. Because the body has changed. So where is the fallacy of logic? It is very clearly... And the authority says... Krsna says, not an ordinary person. He says, "Within this body there is the soul, and as on account of the soul, the body is changing shape from childhood to boyhood, boyhood to youthhood, from youthhood to old man's body. Similarly, when this body will be useless, he will accept another body." This simply truth one has to understand first of all before anything spiritual knowledge. If one cannot understand that the spirit soul is different from this body, then he is cat and dog. He is not human being.

Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke. If anyone accepts this body... This body is made of three elements, kapha, pitta, vayuh: mucus, bile, and air. So if we accept this body, combination of bones and flesh and blood and urines and stool and kapha and mucus and so many things, if we consider this body as "I am, the soul," do you mean to say that is very good knowledge? No. That is go-kharah. Go-kharah means animal. Go means cow and kharah means ass. So these animal think like that, "I am this body." And if a man thinks like that, he is no better than the animal. That is not possible. Do you mean to say by combination of this blood, flesh, bones, urine, and stool and so many other things, you can, by combination, make a person like big scientist, philosopher, mathematician, by combination of these ingredients? Is it possible? Then there are much quantity of blood and flesh and this in the slaughterhouse. You bring and mix with them stool and urine and make a Professor Einstein. (laughter) You are advanced scientist. You bring this ingredient and make a very intelligent man. So this is all foolishness. Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. Anyone who thinks this body as the self, then he is in the animal kingdom. One, if anyone wants spiritual knowledge, he first of all know what is spirit, then spiritual knowledge. If you have no idea of spirit, what is the value of your spiritual knowledge? There is no value. Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13].

So this Krsna consciousness movement is giving that enlightenment, that you are not this body. Not this movement; it is there... in the statement of Krsna. Dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yau... [Bg. 2.13]. Asocyan anvasocas tvam prajna-vadams ca bhasase [Bg. 2.11]. When Arjuna was declining to fight... Other side was his kinsmen, his brother, nephews, his teacher, all very affectionate. So Arjuna declined, "Krsna, I am not going to fight. They have usurped our kingdom. That's all right. They are also our own men. Let them enjoy. But I am not going to kill them." This is Vaisnava. Because he is a devotee, in spite of being harrassed by the other party... Wife was insulted, then kingdom was taken by betting, by gambling. In this way they were put into so many troublesome position. Still, when there was actual fight, because Arjuna was a Vaisnava, devotee, he said, "Let them enjoy. I am not going to fight." This is Vaisnava. Ordinary man would have taken very seriously, "Oh, these people have insulted like that. They have taken our... Yes, we must fight." So Vaisnava by naturally, by nature, is not violent. But if it requires, if Krsna directs that "You must fight," they fight. That is Vaisnava. When Arjuna declined to fight, and then Krsna had to instruct him about the whole instruction of Bhagavad-gita just to induce him to fight. And at last, Arjuna was asked by Krsna, "Now what is your decision? I have told you everything. What do you decide? Whatever you decide, now you do. I have finished My instruction." He said, "Yes, I shall fight." Karisye vacanam tava, nasto mohah [Bg. 18.73]. "I was illusioned. Now it is my duty. Because You are ordering and I have heard You very patiently, so it is my duty to fight." Karisye vacanam tava [Bg. 18.73]. This very word is there. "I shall act as you advise." This is the result of studying Bhagavad-gita. You read Bhagavad-gita, and when you agree to act by the instruction of Krsna, then your Bhagavad-gita reading is success. Otherwise, if you act differently, then you may read Bhagavad-gita for many thousands of years. There is no benefit.

So Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita that asocyan anvasocan. In the beginning Arjuna was arguing with Krsna to support his decision that he would not fight, but he could not convince Krsna very nicely. That he understood, that "Although I am speaking so many things, Krsna is not changing. He is fixed up." Then he surrendered himself: "My dear Krsna, we are now talking as friends. No, we shall talk now as master and disciple. You I accept You as my master." Sisyas te 'ham sadhi mam prapannam [Bg. 2.7]. He accepted Him as the master and he became disciple to understand Bhagavad-gita. This is the way. If you have got your own opinion, you will never understand Bhagavad-gita. You have to take lessons from the master. Although the book is there, for example I can give you. Suppose if you want to be a medical man, the books are available in the market. You can purchase and read and become a doctor. Is it possible? Is it possible that simply by reading books, purchasing from the market, I become a medical man? No. That is not possible. You have to learn it from a person who is a medical man. Then you will. You go to the medical college and learn the medical science from the practical medical man, and then you examine, put yourself in examination. When you pass... This is the way. So any sastra, any book, even in the material world, it is not possible to read oneself and understand the real fact. That is not possible. Therefore Vedic injunction is that if you want to learn that spiritual science, tad-vijnana. Tat. Tat-vijnana means spiritual science. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet [MU 1.2.12]. This is the instruction. If you want to learn that spiritual science, then you must approach a bona fide guru. Gurum evabhigacchet. There are many sastric injunction like that. Tasmad gurum prapadyeta jijnasuh sreya uttamam [SB 11.3.21].

And who requires a guru? Guru is not a fashion. It is necessary. How it is necessary? Now, anyone who is inquisitive to understand the spiritual science, for him it is necessary. Jijnasuh sreya uttamam. Even if you want to become an ordinary electrician, still, you require a teacher, and what to speak of spiritual science. So that is necessary. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet. So Arjuna followed it, and he submitted himself to Krsna to become His disciple, not to talk as friend. So when he accepted Him as the spiritual master, so... Teacher... The teacher has the right to chastise the student. That is accepted. So He immediately chastised him, Arjuna. Arjuna was chastised. What is that? Asocyan anvasocas tvam prajna-vadams ca bhasase: [Bg. 2.11] "My dear Arjuna, you are talking just like a very learned man, but you are lamenting on the subject matter on which no learned man laments. That means you are a fool." It is indirectly said. "No learned man laments on this subject." What was the subject? He was considering that "If I kill the other side, my brother or my nephew or my teacher, they will die." So that is the general impression in the whole world. Then He teaches, "No. On account of death of the body, the soul does not die. The soul simply changes another body. That's all." This is the first instruction. Tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati [Bg. 2.13]. For that reason you cannot kill. It is not that Krsna was encouraging killing. No. Duty. When there is fight, there is killing. You cannot avoid it. Just like the soldier. What is the duty of the soldier? Kill as many as possible the enemies. But the same soldier, if he comes back home and kills some of his men or countrymen and he is arrested and in the court, he is ordered to be hanged, and if he pleads that "I am a soldier. In the battlefield I have killed so many persons, and now I have killed one man. Why you are ordering me to be hanged?" What will be the answer of the court? The answer that "You cannot kill on principle. But you can kill on the superior order. You cannot kill by your whims." In the battlefield the commander-in-chief orders, "Yes, you kill and get gold medal." But if you think the, "I have killed so many persons in the battlefield. Here is my enemy. I kill him." No. That you cannot do. That you cannot do. This is the principle. When there is duty, that is another thing. But not whimsically. We cannot kill. Therefore Lord Jesus Christ ordered, "Thou shall not kill." This is the order. "Thou shall not kill." But we are violating the order. We are killing so many animals. So this is not good. On the plea that "Lord Christ sometimes took some fish somewhere; therefore we will have to maintain a big slaughterhouse," this is not very good logic.

yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke
sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma-ijya-dhih
yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicij
janesv abhijnesu sa eva go-kharah
 [SB 10.84.13]

So anyway, we have to act according to the superior order. And so far the spirit soul is concerned, that is the first lesson of spiritual knowledge. Unless you understand what is spirit... We are present here. The body is there and the spirit is there. Now we must analyze according to the direction given in authoritative books. That is very easy. Krsna says that within this body there is the spirit soul. And we can experience that unless the spirit soul is there, the body does not change, and as soon as the spirit soul goes away, the body is a dead lump of matter. That's all. Very easy to understand. So we have to first understand this, then spiritual progress. If we remain like asses and dogs and cats, that "I am this body," there is no question of spiritual understanding. Therefore we are presenting Bhagavad-gita As It Is. Read it and you will understand what is the difference between spirit and matter. In so many ways they have been described. Then if we understand that "I am not this body. I am spirit soul," then my duty will be assigned, that "I am spirit soul, aham brahmasmi. So I am acting for the body only? The body is perishable." Antavanta ime dehah. Everything is there. Antavat means perishable. Nityasyoktah saririnah: "But the spirit soul is eternal." So I am working day and night so hard only for this body, how to eat, how to dress, how to have sex, how to defend. What I am doing for the spirit soul? That is knowledge. The spirit soul, I am the spirit soul, and because as spirit soul I am within this body, the body is working, moving, and I am simply taking care of the body. What care I am taking for myself, the spirit soul, who is going to change this body?

Now, Krsna says, tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. The spirit soul will change this body, as it has already changed from babyhood to childhood, childhood to boyhood. That I already explained. So what type of body I am going to accept next life? I am not going to die. I am simply changing body. Just like we change dress. If one dress is torn or old, we change another dress. Exactly like that. This body we change when it is no more usable. We have got our spiritual body. And they say the spirit is formless. No. Now if this body is my dress, then how the body has got these hands and legs? Just like because you have got actually hands and legs, therefore your coat and pant has got hands and legs. If you have no form, then how the coat and pant is made? The coat, the pant has got legs because actually I have got leg. The coat has hands or body because actually I have got body. So the argument that the spirit is formless, that is bogus. Unless I have got form, how the dress body is made with hands and legs and heads and everything?

So these are the subject matters to be considered. That is called brahma-jijnasa, to understand about his spiritual life, spiritual knowledge. Then there will be question, "How the spirit soul -- I am -- I have contacted this material body?" And it is said in the Bhagavad-gita that because I have accepted this material body, all miserable conditions are there. We are trying to get over miseries. That is called struggle for existence. Everyone is trying. He thinks, "One status of life is miserable. Let me avoid it and get better life." That is our struggle. In this way, from lower bodies we have come to this spiritual..., I mean to say, human form of body. Now it has to be decided what is our next body. Next body. That is answered in the Bhagavad-gita. You'll find:

yanti deva vrata-devan
pitrn yanti pitr-vratah
bhutani yanti bhutejya
mad-yajino 'pi yanti mam
 [Bg. 9.25]

If you want to go to the higher planetary system where the demigods live, you can go there. Therefore the karmis, by performing Vedic ritualistic ceremonies, they want elevation to the higher planetary system where the life, prolongation of life is very, very big. As we have got day and night, in the higher planetary system the waxing and waning moon, then when the moon is present there and the sky is in light, that is the day of the higher planetary system. And when the moon is dark, that is the night. That means our fifteen days, in the higher planetary system -- twelve hours. Just imagine their year. And such ten thousands of years you can live if you can go to the moon planet. The day and night, fifteen days, your fifteen days, is equal to their one day. No, twelve hours. That means your one month is their one day. Now calculate one day, then thirty days, one month. Then twelve months equal to one year. Such ten thousands of years. Just imagine. You can go there and live like that, yanti deva-vrata devan [Bg. 9.25], if you like. But that is not eternal life. After that long period, you have to die. So Krsna says janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi-duhkha-dosanudarsanam [Bg. 13.9]. You are trying to avoid all kinds of miserable condition, but your real miserable condition is your birth, death, old age, and disease. Try to avoid it. That is perfection. That is spiritual life.

So there are many things. If you kindly take advantage of our offering... We are presenting this Krsna consciousness movement very genuinely and authorizedly. The center is open now. Now it is up to you to take advantage of it and be benefited.

Thank you very much. (devotees offer obeisances) [break]

Madhudvisa: If there is any questions to present to His Divine Grace you can ask them now. Yes?

Guest: What is the purpose of the Deity worship?

Madhudvisa: What is the purpose of Deity worship?

Prabhupada: Deity means Krsna's Deity. Krsna and Krsna's Deity is not different. The whole idea, spiritual knowledge, means to understand God. So vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyam [Bg. 15.15]. That is the purpose of Vedic knowledge. So just to favor you... You cannot see now God. So Krsna has come in Deity form to accept your service. And we have to render service. Not that it is a doll or stone, no. He is Krsna. Because you cannot see at the present moment except stone and wood, He has accepted this form like stone and wood so that you can see and render service. This is the purpose of Deity worship.

Devotee (1): Srila Prabhupada, you were saying that because the body has arms and legs, then the coat has a similar shape. Then does the spirit soul that's within our body have arms and legs like that?

Prabhupada: Yes.

Devotee (1): Would the spirit soul that is within, say, a cow's body, is in a different shape?

Prabhupada: Yes. It has got also legs. But the shape has taken according to his desire. Every animal has got these four things. Just like bird, it has got two wings, two legs. The animal has got four legs. And the man has got two hands, two legs. So the same parts of the body, they are appearing in a different type. But the four limbs of the body are there. Hm?

Devotee (2): Is the original body of the spirit soul a human form?

Madhudvisa: The question is that whether the eternal form of the spirit soul is a human form or is it...

Prabhupada: Yes, human form. God is also human form. "Man is made after the shape of God." I think there is in the Bible. Is it not? So God is also like human form. Here you see Krsna, two hands, two legs.

Hari-sauri: How do we understand, then, that there are peacocks and flowers and trees in the spiritual world? Are these not eternal forms?

Prabhupada: Yes. They are more covered. Just like if you cover your body with blanket, the hands and legs are invisible. But you are not the blanket. So the trees and plants, they are more covered. They are not in full manifestation. The human form is the full manifestation of the soul.

Hari-sauri: They are covered in the spiritual world?

Madhudvisa: He is asking if they were actually covered in the spiritual world as well.

Prabhupada: Not in the spiritual world. There that is voluntary. Some devotee wants to serve Krsna as flower; they become flower there. If I want that "As a flower I shall lie down at the lotus feet of Krsna," he becomes flower, voluntarily. And he can change his..., from flower to human body. That is spiritual life. There is no restriction. If some devotee wants to serve Krsna as cow, he serves Krsna as cow, as calf, as flower, as plant, as water, as ground, field, or as father, as mother, as friend, as beloved, anything. Ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham [Bg. 4.11]. That is Krsna's all-powerfulness, spiritual life.

Guest: What is the first stage of transformation like in the consciousness after one discovers chanting Hare Krsna mantra?

Prabhupada: You understand what you are. By chanting Hare Krsna mantra when you are purified, then you can understand that you are not this body; you are soul. Srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah, hrdy antah-stho abhadrani [SB 1.2.17]. Abhadrani means inauspicious things. That is the modes of ignorance and passion. So in the material world some of us, most of us, we are covered by these modes of passion and ignorance. That is abhadra. That is most inauspicious. We cannot understand. But gradually we have to come to the modes of goodness, sattva-guna. So rajo-guna, tamo-guna is covering us. So by srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah... If you hear about Krsna, then these dirty things, rajo-guna and tamo-guna, will be cleansed. And even it is not completely cleansed, nasta-prayesv abhadresu [SB 1.2.18], even almost clean, then you come to the platform of sattva-guna. And as soon as you come to the platform of sattva-guna, the resultant action of tamo-guna and rajo-guna, namely kama-lobhadayas ca ye. Tato rajas-tamo-bhavah kama-lobhadayas ca ye [SB 1.2.19]. So long you are covered by the passion and ignorance... The ignorance means you do not know anything. Just like animals. And passion means although human being, they are after sense gratification. That is called passion. So both these qualities will keep you in darkness. By the resultant action of these modes, you will be simply greedy and lusty. So if you come to the platform of sattva-guna, then you become free from this greediness and lustiness. Then your life becomes settled. Then gradually you will understand what is God, what is your relationship. Tato rajas-tamo-bhavah kama-lobhadayas ca ye [SB 1.2.19]. Nasta-prayesv abhadresu nityam bhagavata-sevaya [SB 1.2.18]. You can do that simply by cultivating this Bhagavata life. That is required. What is that?

Devotee (3): Is Krsna always seeking to engage us in His devotional service, and is He upset in some way if we reject His offer?

Madhudvisa: Is Krsna always anxious for us to engage in His devotional service, and does He become upset if we reject His offering?

Prabhupada: Yes, because you are foolish. Krsna, God, is coming to you to take you back to home, back to Godhead. If you reject, that is your foolishness. Mudha. Na mam duskrtino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah [Bg. 7.15]. One who does not surrender to Krsna, or God -- when we speak of Krsna, it is God -- then what class of man he is? That is described in the Bhagavad-gita. Duskrtinah, mudhah, naradhamah, mayayapahrta-jnanah, asuri bhavam asr... Immediately you come to these categories. What is that? Duskrtinah, most sinful. Unless you are most sinful, you cannot reject Krsna's offer. Or unless you are rascal number one, you cannot reject Krsna's offer. Duskrtino mudhah. So as soon as you reject Krsna's offer, that means you are most sinful, you are rascal number one, you are lowest of the mankind, and your knowledge has been taken by maya. That's all. Thank you very much. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Prabhupada: So kirtana has finished or kirtana has to be... Where is... (devotees chanting japa)

Pradyumna: Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya... (3 times) (leads chanting of verse and synonyms)

brahma-varcasa-kamas tu
yajeta brahmanah patim
indram indriya-kamas tu
praja-kamah prajapatin

Prabhupada: So, I think last verse we did not read the purport. You read the purport of the last verse.

evam etan nigaditam
prstavan yad bhavan mama
nrnam yan mriyamananam
manusyesu manisinam

Read the purport.

Pradyumna: "Purport: In the human society, all over the world, there are millions and billions of men and women, and almost all of them are less intelligent because they have very little knowledge of the spirit soul."

Prabhupada: This is our challenge, that the, there are millions and trillions of men and women all over the world, but they're not at all intelligent. This is our challenge. So, the Krsna consciousness movement may be taken by others as crazy, or we challenge that "You are all crazy men." Therefore we have got a little book, "Who is crazy?" Because they're thinking that "These shaven-headed boys and girls are crazy," but actually they are crazy. Because they have no intelligence. Why? They do not know what is spirit soul. This is the animal consciousness. Dogs, cats, they think that the body, they are the body.

yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke
sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih
yat tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicij
janesv abhijnesu sa eva go-kharah
 [SB 10.84.13]

Go-khara. Go means cow, and khara means ass. A person who is in bodily conscious, "I am this body." So 99.9% of the whole population of the world, they're like this, "I am this body," "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am African," "I am this..."

And they're fighting just like cats and dogs, they fight, "I am cat, you are dog. You are dog, I am cat." That's all. So this challenge, that "You are all rascals," it is a very strong word, but actually that is the fact. That is the fact. It is a revolutionary movement. We are challenging everyone that "You are all set of asses and cows and animals, because you have no knowledge beyond this body." Therefore it is said... In this purport, I have especially mentioned. "Because they have little knowledge of spirit soul, all of them are not intelligent." I have spoken with big, big professors. In Moscow, that gentleman, Professor Kotovsky, he said, "Swamiji, after death, there is nothing. Everything is finished." And he's one of the big professors in the country. So this is the defect of modern civilization, that the whole society is being governed by cats and dogs, actually. So how there can be any peace and prosperity? It is not possible. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanah.

Blind man leading other blind men. If one has eyes to see, he can lead hundreds and thousands of men, "Please come along with me. I shall cross the road." But if the man leading, he is himself blind, how he can lead others? Andha yathandhair upaniyamanah. So Bhagavata, there is no comparison. There cannot be. It is transcendental science. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanas te 'pisa-tantryam uru-damni baddhah. Isa-tantryam, these blind leaders, they are bound up by the laws of material nature, and they are giving advice. What advice they can give? Then? Go on.

Pradyumna: "Almost all of them have a wrong conception of life, for they identify themselves with the gross and subtle material bodies, which they are not in fact."

Prabhupada: This is their, I mean to say, less intelligence. Everyone thinks that "I am this body." Or little further off, one thinks, "No, I am not this body. I am mind." There are two bodies, one gross body made of these physical elements: earth, water, air, fire, sky, and another... Just like shirt and coat. You have got your coat, and within the coat there is shirt, and within the shirt, you are. This is gross example. Similarly, we have got this gross body and when the gross body is finished, then I keep myself in this mental body. That is called ghostly body. The ghostly body means one who is living in the subtle body. Ghost is a fact; it is not fictitious. So the subtle body carries me to another gross body. That is called transmigration of the soul. I must have some vehicle. The subtle body... Gross body is finished. That is gone. Now, the subtle body is there; therefore my mentality will create another gross body. If I am dog mentality, then I'll create another body, dog's body. And if I am God mentality, then I'll create another body like God.

This is the process. So, everyone has got full liberty how, what kind of body he's going to get next. So if you keep yourself in Krsna consciousness, that consciousness, subtle body, then you are sure to get next life, if not in Vaikuntha, at least you get a high standard life. That is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita, sucinam srimatam gehe yoga-bhrasto 'bhijayate. Yoga-bhrastah. Bhrastah means fallen, fallen. Suppose we are executing Krsna consciousness, and some of our students are going away. So that is called bhrasta, fallen. They could not continue. So one who could not continue by his ill luck, he is also not loser because he is... That slight Krsna consciousness will help him to get another human form of body. That is guaranteed. Ordinary men, they do not know what kind of body they are going to get. They're in darkness. But it will be decided at the time of his death according to the mentality. God is so kind, whatever you want, He is giving you. Ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham [Bg. 4.11].

"Whatever you want, you take." He has given you full liberty. Because we have come to this material world to enjoy. Enjoy means sense gratification. And sense gratification standard is according to the body. A king's body, his sense gratification, and a hog's body, his sense gratification, they are different. Because the bodies are different. A king cannot take anything which is not very nicely prepared, and a hog is satisfied with stool. Why? A different body. Deha-yogena dehinam. There are... The whole thing is sense gratification. Here, anyone who has come... Indriyartha artha-vadinah. Their only aim is sense gratification. That's all. Anyone. Beginning from Brahma down to the ant. Material life means a desire for sense gratification. They're fallen because they wanted to gratify their senses. They cannot remain in Vaikuntha world. In the Vaikuntha world, only the one, the Supreme Lord, His senses should be satisfied not anyone's else. That is called bhakti.

The process is sense gratification, but if you want your sense gratification, that is material. And if you want to satisfy Krsna's sense gratification, then you are spiritual. So anyone who wants to gratify his senses, personal, he is pushed here, in this material world. Now, according to different karma, you create your field... Just like ordinarily, everyone is working in Los Angeles, hard, day and night, but somebody's poor man -- somebody's rich man. Why? According to karma. One is intelligent enough. He can do things very nicely. He's getting more money. So field is open for everyone. It is not, the government is giving a special facility for somebody, and he's becoming rich, and another man is forbidden to use the government facilities, therefore he's becoming poor. No. It is not that. Government is giving facility everyone equally. You become educated, you become high court judge. And if you become criminal, then go to jail. So similarly, God, He's equal to everyone.

Samo 'ham sarva-bhutesu. There is no discrimination. How He can be God? God has not made all these different types of bodies. You have made; we have made. I want to become a dog, God has given me facility, "Take this dog's body." Prakrteh kriyamanani... He immediately orders material nature, "Give him a dog's body." That's all. If I want to have a tiger's body, nature will give me tiger's body, "Take, tiger's body." So it depends on my work, sva-karmabhih. But either I'll have a tiger's body, or dog's body, or a Brahma's body, or ant's body, all of us are fallen, patita. Patita. Patita means fallen. Because this is not the proper life; you'll have to change. Sometimes you are Brahma, sometimes you are hog. Up and down. Up and down. Therefore, one who is intelligent, he has no more... Ara na koriho mane asa. Narottama dasa Thakura says, "No more desires. Simply surrender to Krsna." If you go on desiring... You can desire. You are full at liberty. But desire means you have to accept different types of bodies.

It is... You cannot make any permanent settlement. That is not possible. And That is also your fault. Because... Suppose you are posted now in a high post, Mr. Nixon, but you cannot keep the standard. You'll commit some sins. Next life, you'll have to become something else. This is going on. Kabhu svarge kabhu naya. Therefore the karmis, they are all non-intelligence. Their intelligence is not... The only intelligent person is he who has completely surrendered to the lotus feet of Krsna and engaged in his service. He's the only intelligent. And all are rascals. That's all. This is our conclusion. Anyone, let come. We shall prove it. Let anyone come, either the karmis, jnanis, yogis, anyone. We shall prove that "You are rascal #1." This is our challenge. If he's a sane man, he'll understand that he's a rascal. Otherwise, he will fight, unnecessarily. Therefore we do not say directly such harsh words, that "You are rascal." But we should know at least that they are all rascals.

At least we should know. They have no intelligence. Because they are entangled. Just see this list. Here is, brahma-varcasa-kamas tu. Brahma-varcasa means those who are desiring to become one with the effulgence, to merge into the effulgence of the Lord. Varcasa. Varcasa means the effulgence of Krsna. Yasya prabha prabhavato jagad-anda-koti [Bs. 5.40]. Just like the sun and the sunshine. Similarly, Krsna is the Supreme Brahma, and His effulgence is called brahmajyoti. So these jnanis, they are desiring to merge into the Brahman effulgence. Therefore, it is called brahma-varcasa-kamas tu. And kama means desire. Therefore, they are still desiring. They are fed up with these ordinary desires. Ordinarily, they are desiring, "I shall become rich man. I shall become minister. I shall become this, I shall become that." And they are also desiring to merge into the effulgence of Krsna. That is also desire, kama. The word is explicitly said, kama. Kama means desire.

That is also sense gratification. To become one with God, it is also sense gratification. When he fails to become the greatest personality, he then desires, "Now let me become one with God." One with God means he thinks that he will be equally expert as the supreme enjoyer. Because God is supreme enjoyer. Bhokta. So he could not enjoy life separately; now he wants to mix with the body of God. Therefore... That enjoyment is there. The propensity for enjoying is there. He failed to enjoy keeping himself separate, so he wants to mix with God. Just like the politicians. Whenever there is some political movement, they take some part. Their idea is that "If I become somehow or other a little prominent, important, I'll have a minister's post." That's all. It is a fact. They do not care for country's welfare. No. There is no such question. Their only ambition is, "Let me mix with this political party. It's growing... Just like in our country, there are so many parties.

Recently, Indira Gandhi's party became powerful. So all other men, giving resignation from other party, they took into the party of Indira Gandhi. So it is like that, merging into the existence of the powerful. So the frustrated karmis, frustrated karmis, when they do not find any happiness even by becoming the greatest or the topmost person, he wants to become one with God. Therefore it is said, brahma-varcasa-kamas tu. Brahma-varcasa means effulgence. But it is kama. That is not akama. But a devotee is akama, there is no kama. He has no personal desires. His desire is only to remain eternal servant of God. That's all. That is his position. That is not desire. That is his actual position. Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagadisa kamaye. Kamaye, this kama. I no more desire for riches. Karmis -- they want money. Na dhanam na janam, or they want many men to follow. Followers, they create party by political agitation.

So na dhanam na janam. And another desire is to have very nice, beautiful wife. These are the material desires, to have enough money, enough followers, nice wife. "Bas. My life is now fulfilled." But Krsna, Caitanya Mahaprabhu, denies all these nonsense. Na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagadisa kamaye. "I don't want all these things." So just try to understand the position of Krsna conscious person. They have nothing to do with all this nonsense. Then what is our position? Void? Because "No, no, not this, not this, not this." Then it come to zero? No. Mama janmani janmanisvare bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi. The positive, bhakti. Not zero. We make all this nonsense zero, but we come to the positive fact. The fact is "I am eternal servant of God." So that is fact. I have forgotten now; therefore I am desiring so many things. So come to the fact. Come to the fact. Actually, they are in fact. Just like, what is called outlaws. Outlaws, they say, you don't care for government, but what is the loss of the government by such declaration?

That outlaw is put into the prison house and he's captivated and give all sorts of trouble. That... The outlaw's gain is to put himself into trouble. That's all. The government does not lose anything by the so-called declaration of the outlaws, that "I don't care for the government." That is the idea. Similarly, those who are declaring, "What is God? We don't care for God. I am God. I am everything," so they are creating their own hell. That's all. God has nothing to lose, nothing to gain. "You go to hell, according to your..." But because we are part and parcel of God, Krsna, He's not very happy because these rascals are going to hell. Therefore He comes: "My dear boys, why you are going to hell in this way? Please surrender and come home." (laughter) But these rascals will not hear. Avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritam [Bg. 9.11]. "Eh! Why shall I surrender to Krsna? He's an ordinary man. I am also as good as Krsna." That's all. Therefore they're less intelligent.

They have no intelligence. Then? Go on.

Pradyumna: "They may be situated in different high and low positions in the estimation of human society, but one should know definitely that unless one inquires about his own self beyond the body and the mind, all his activities in human life are total failures."

Prabhupada: That's all. If he does not care to know what he is, what is his position... But he cannot know it because he has already accepted "I am this body." The body will be finished. Either it will be burned or buried in the ground, or some animal will eat me. That's all. So with that, everything will be finished. So therefore, with this understanding, whatever he is doing, it is simply failure. Because the basic principle of understanding is wrong. He does not know that "I am creating my next field of work." That he does not know. So, Bhagavad-gita informs us, idam sariram kaunteya [Bg. 13.2]. What is called? The field. This body is called field. What is that sloka? Can you remember? Idam sariram kaunteya ksetram ity abhidhiyate Ksetra [Bg. 13.2]. Ksetra means field. Field. Just like you work, you play, on the field. So the... You are not the field. You are not the field. Because you are walking on the field or you are playing on the field, it does not mean you are field.

But these nonsense, these rascals, they take it, "I'm playing on this field; therefore I am field." No. Therefore Krsna says particularly, idam sariram kaunteya ksetram ity abhidhiyate [Bg. 13.2]. Ksetra. It is field. Just like "a field of activities," we say. So every individual soul is given a chance of field of activities. So this is a field. Now you can act. This field, this body, human body, is very nice field. Here, by acting, you can understand your real position. Other field, the dog's field... He has got a body, but that body is not very good to understand himself. So idam sariram kaunteya ksetram ity abhidhiyate [Bg. 13.2]. So one who does not know that "This body is my field of activities, I am not this body,"... Therefore, without knowing the real fact that he is not body, he is simply working; that means it is failure. Parabhavah. The Sanskrit word is called parabhavah. Parabhavas tavad abodha-jato yavan na jijnasata atma-tattvam. Parabhavas tavad abodha-jatah. Every one of us is born abodha.

A means not, and bodha means knowledge. Without any knowledge. That's a fact. If you are born with knowledge, then there was no need of sending the children to school. There was no need. He is born. No. Everyone is born rascal. That is to be understood. And therefore he has to be trained. So if the training is simply how to eat more, how to sleep more, how to have sex life more, and how to defend more, that is animal training. But if the training is how to know God, how to know your relationship with God, that is real training. That chance is in the human form of body. So if a human being does not take this chance, this facility, then his all activities are failure. Simply for nothing he's wasting time. Failure. Then?

Pradyumna: "Therefore, out of thousands and thousands of men, one may inquire about his spirit self and thus consult the revealed scriptures like Vedanta-sutras, Bhagavad-gita, and Srimad-Bhagavatam."

Prabhupada: Yes. The information is there. Simply, the inquiry should be there. The Vedanta-sutra therefore, the first aphorism, athato brahma jijnasa. Jijnasa means inquiry. "Now it is the opportunity for inquiring about the self." "Now" means this human form of body. A dog cannot. So therefore, Vedanta-sutra begins, athato brahma jijnasa. This is the opportunity. But unfortunately, people are not given the opportunity, facility. School, college, they are simply giving "More become mechanics," how to deal with instruments, iron instruments. Big, big institutions for technological understanding. And where is this technology? Why a dead man is dead man? Why don't you give some mechanical power so that he can come out again? Where is that technology? You know the technology... When a motorcar is stopped, you know the technology how to start it again. But you do not know this technology. When this motorcar, this body motorcar will stop, you have no technology to start it again.

Then where is the perfection of your technological institute? You are missing the real point. Therefore abodha-jatah, everything is failure, all technology failure. Failure, simply failure. What is the use of? You do not know real technology. Therefore it is failure. But the informations are there. If we are intelligent enough, then we can take that "What is this? Why a dead man cannot be revived into life again? Then what is the fact?" But nobody wants to die; he wants to continue. Why he becomes old? Old means warning and, of the... Just like the, what is that, yellow light. "Now please prepare for the red light." So this is coming... You stop this. Technology. Where is your technology? But the information is there. Bhagavad-gita. Tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati [Bg. 2.13]. Then as you have changed so many bodies, from your mother's womb up to the point of death, so you are going to change another body. Therefore any sane man will say "Oh, then what is that body?

What kind of body I am going to get?" And that is intelligent. That is intelligence. And, if he does not know, he dies like cats and dogs, then he spoils his whole life, human form of life. This is going on. Have sankirtana. Hare Krsna. (end)

"Yajna Means Work For Visnu"

66/05/20 New York, Bhagavad-gita 3.8-13

Prabhupada: So we were discussing that everybody should work.

niyatam kuru karma tvam
karma jyayo hy akarmanah
sarira-yatrapi ca te
na prasiddhyed akarmanah
[Bg. 3.8]

yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra
loko 'yam karma-bandhanah
tad-artham karma kaunteya
mukta-sangah samacara
[Bg. 3.9]

Now, this is the formula of spiritual realization, that we should not stop our working capacity, the prescribed duties in which we are engaged. That is not to be stopped. If we stop work and spiritual realization, for spiritual realization, we leave this world and go to the jungle or Himalaya and sit down there for meditation for spiritual realization, oh, how many people will be ready to do this thing? No. This is not for mass people. Lord Sri Krsna is prescribing something practical which can be adopted by every one and all, without any distinction. This point we have already discussed in the last day's meeting, that whatever you may be, it doesn't matter. You can realize the highest perfection of life, provided you work under the regulation of yajna. Yajnarthat karma. There is no harm working, but the work should be done for the Supreme Lord, Yajna. Yajna means Visnu. Because according to laws of nature, any work you do, it has got some reaction and we are bound up by those reactions. The Vedas also says, karmana baddhyate jantuh, karmana baddhyate jantuh, that "All living entities, they are bound up in the material encagement on account of their different kinds of karma, or work." But here is the point, that you shall not be bound up by the reaction of your karma if you act it on behalf of Yajna, or Visnu, or the Supreme Lord. That is the secret. Yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra. Anyatra.

If you do not work for that supreme perfect, then you will be bound up and your, this encagement of body will continue. This encagement of body will continue if you work on your own responsibility and not for the supreme purpose of the Supreme Lord, Yajna, or Visnu. That is the secret. Yajna means yajno vai visnuh. It is sruti. Sruti means the Vedic literature, the Vedic hymns. They prove it, "Yajna means Visnu." Visnuh tu sartham karma samacara.(?) Therefore we have to work for the satisfaction of Visnu. That is called Yajna.

saha-yajnah prajah srstva
purovaca prajapatih
anena prasavisyadhvam
esa vo 'stv ista-kama-dhuk
[Bg. 3.10]

The proof of the sacrifice, yajna, is mentioned in the Vedic scripture. After the creation, it was so announced that "If you want to be happy, you must perform sacrifices." Sacrifices.

The Vedic literature is created for guidance of the conditioned souls. Every living being who is in this material world is conditioned by the laws of material nature. And it is a chance, this creation, and especially this human body, is a chance to get rid of this material entanglement. And the chance is open by acting for the satisfaction of Visnu. Saha-yajnah prajah srstva. Prajah. Prajah means the living entities, after being created, they were advised that "You perform yajna, or sacrifice, for the satisfaction of Visnu. That will..." Anena, "By this," prasavisyadhvam, "you increase your enlightenment." Prasavisyadhvam. "And whatever you want, that will be satisfied by this yajna." Devan yajna. That sacrifice.

devan bhavayatanena
te deva bhavayantu vah
parasparam bhavayantah
sreyah param avapsyatha
[Bg. 3.11]

Now, yajna is practically... According to the Vedic rituals, yajna, or sacrifice, is offered to different devas, demigods. There are hundreds and thousands of demigods mentioned in the Vedic literatures, and the whole portion is called upasana-kanda. Upasana-kanda means worshiping different demigods. But what are these demigods? The demigods are just like different parts of the whole body of the Supreme Lord. They are, so to say, just like the government of the king. There is one king, but there are many state officers. Just you can imagine that if for management of a city like New York you have got so many departments... As soon as we go to this chambers, we get so many departments: criminal department, civil department, and so many departments. So for management of these universal affairs, there are different departments also, so far we can get information from the Vedic literature. And each department there is a particular director. And Brahma is considered to be supreme director of this universe. So this yajna, sacrifice, by Vedic rituals, they are indicated to pay different taxes to different demigods. But the Supreme Lord is above all. Therefore if one performs sacrifice for the Supreme Lord, he is immune from other obligations. That is also mentioned.

devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitrnam
na kinkaro nayam rni ca rajan
sarvatmana yah saranam saranyam
gato mukundam parihrtya kartam
[SB 11.5.41]

Now, as soon as a living being is born in this material world, he has got many obligations. He has got obligation to the different demigods. Why obligation? Now, because just like the sun is also one of the demigods. He is supplying you light, so you have got some obligation. Don't you have any obligation? If you have got obligation to the electric powerhouse for supplying this light, which you are enjoying now, have you got no obligation to the sun who is supplying so much profusely light? Yes, you have got. The Vedic literature confirms it that you are indebted to the sun. Similarly, you are indebted to the moon. Similarly, you are indebted to air. And so many things we are taking advantage of the supernatural power. So we are actually indebted. Similarly, we are indebted to the rsis, great sages, because they have left behind them all this Vedic knowledge. You are taking advantage. Just like this Bhagavad-gita, or any scripture, any book of knowledge.

So we are indebted. Deva, rsi and bhuta. Bhuta means ordinary, general living beings in our dealings. Suppose if I go to consult some lawyer, I have to pay. If I want to consult some medical practitioner, I have to pay. So this is obligation. This is no mercy; this is obligation. Similarly, we are obliged in so many respects -- to the supernatural power, to the sages, to the ordinary living beings, and to the animals also. Because we are drinking milk from the cows, so we are indebted. But instead of paying our indebtedness, we are killing. You see? These are all reactions. We are creating reactions. If you don't pay bill for the electricity for a many long time, your electricity will be cut off. Your telephone will be cut off. But we must be conscious of our indebtedness to so many things.

Devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitrnam [SB 11.5.41]. Pitrnam means the family in which you have taken your birth. You are indebted to the forefathers. Therefore, according to Vedic rites, in certain time you have to offer respects to your forefathers. Sraddha ceremony. During the month of October there is a general sraddha ceremony in India. So we are indebted to the forefathers. Devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitrnam [SB 11.5.41].

So we are in so many ways indebted. Our obligations are there. But sarvatmana yah saranam saranyam gato mukundam, na rni na kinkarah. The Bhagavata says, "If somebody fully surrenders unto the Supreme, Mukunda..." Mukunda means one who can offer you liberation from this material bondage. He is Mukunda. So if one surrenders fully unto Krsna -- Krsna is Mukunda -- then he is no longer any more indebted to all these obligations. He is immune. At one stroke he becomes liquidated from all obligation. And in the Bhagavad-gita you will find this statement confirmed in the last portion of Bhagavad-gita. The Lord says that aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami: "If you surrender unto Me..." Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. The Lord says that "You have not do. You have to do nothing. You simply surrender unto Me." Sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66]. "You have got so many obligations; it is right. But it is impossible for you." Of course, there are systems how to liquidate your obligation. But especially in this age, oh, who is going to satisfy the demigods? Who is going to satisfy the forefathers? Who is going to satisfy the so many obligation with ordinary living being? Nobody is going. But if you don't satisfy your indebtedness, then there will be reaction. But if you surrender unto the Supreme Lord, you will be protected from all reaction. Therefore it is very easy. By one installment we become free from all obligation. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja aham tvam sarva-papebhyah [Bg. 18.66].

Papebhyah. Papebhyah means the reaction of sins. Now, if I don't repay my indebtedness to the persons to whom I am obliged, then I have become sinner. I am sinner. Just like I owe to you $100 or $1,000. I don't pay you. So then I become a culprit in the consideration of the state law. I have to pay you. Similarly, all indebtedness has to be liquidated. If you are unable to liquidate, then you will be a sinner. But you can save yourself from the reaction of all sins if you surrender unto the Supreme Lord. Sarvatmana yah saranam saranyam gato mukundam parihrtya kartam. You have got some duties, but if you give up all your duties and simply surrender unto the Supreme Lord, then you are liquidated at once. This is the version of Bhagavata and this is confirmed in Bhagavad-gita by the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krsna, that "If you surrender unto Me, giving up all your other obligation, then I shall give you all protection." Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami [Bg. 18.66]. Now, if I am protected from the reaction of my sinful acts, but it does not mean that I shall surrender unto the Supreme Lord at the same time continue to act sinfully, no, not that. Or if I am obliged to continue, the God, or the Supreme Lord will protect me. That is the version. Therefore everyone should act yajna. Yajna means work to satisfy the Supreme Lord. That is called yajna. If we do not do that, then we shall be obliged. Otherwise... "Otherwise" means the act which is done for the satisfaction of the Supreme Lord, that is immune from all reaction, but anything which is not done for the satisfaction of the Supreme Lord, that will oblige me in so many bondage of obligation, and I will have to repay that after many, many continuation of this repetition of births and deaths. That is the secret of life. So,

devan bhavayatanena
te deva bhavayantu vah
parasparam bhavayantah
sreyah param avapsyatha
[Bg. 3.11]

And if you live your life for sacrifice, sacrifice of yajna, then you will never be unhappy. You'll never be in want. We become unhappy for want of things which we require. This is practical. This is practical. Anyone... You will be surprised.

I have taken practical information. In 1942 there was a manufactured famine in Bengal by the manipulation of the then government. It is for the first time we experienced that India... In our childhood, when we were children, at that time the first-class rice was selling three dollars for 82 pounds. Can you imagine? Three dollars. Not three dollars, I mean to say, dollar is exchange. Say, for less than one dollar, three-fourth dollar. Three rupees. Three rupees. The exchange of dollar and rupees is: five rupees make one dollar. Now, it was selling at 3.8. So about, I mean to, 75 cent. 75 cent for 82 pounds of best rice. I have seen it in my experiencing of life. When I was a boy in India it was selling. Can you imagine that? But that rice all of a sudden rose in 1940, ten dollars. Now, just imagine if something, the price of something, is raised from 75 cent to ten dollars, how difficult it becomes for the public, for general mass of people. So so many people were in difficulty, and so many people died for want of food, diseases, famine, because when there is want of food... But you will be surprised... I inquired in 1942. Persons who were in our line, I mean to say, engaged in devotional service... I also purchased at the same time. I had... In my family life at that time, I had some responsibility: my self, my wife, my five children, servant, and so many, about ten people. And I was purchasing rice. So anyway, management was going on. But so many people died. But you will be surprised. Those who were in some way or other in touch with the devotional service, I inquired from them individually, and I was satisfied that they were not in difficulty even in that famine circumstances. Even from the villages I inquired that "Were you in difficulty?" They replied, "No, we have no difficulty. Some way or other, we are managing." So this is practical. Anyone who is engaged in the devotional service, whose life is dedicated for service of the Supreme, you will see practically that there will be no want, there will be no unhappiness. This is a fact. This is a fact. So

devan bhavayatanena
te deva bhavayantu vah
parasparam bhavayantah
sreyah param avapsyatha
[Bg. 3.11]

This Vedic injunction is also like that, that "You do sacrifice for the Supreme. Then you will never be unhappy. You will never be in want." Now, mind that, that the work is not stopped. The work in which you are engaged, that is not stopped. We have discussed in the previous verse that niyatam kuru karma tvam. The work which is entrusted to you, or the work in which you are now engaged, that is not to be undone. You work as you are doing. But you engage your, the result of your work or life for the matter of sacrificing for the Supreme Lord.

There is a very good example in the life of the Gosvamis, whom we daily pray, vande rupa-sanatanau raghu-yugau sri-jiva-gopalakau. These six Gosvamis, they were very important men of their age five hundred years before. These Rupa and Sanatana, they were great politicians, ministers, of the then Mohammedan government in Bengal. In Bengal at that time the Pathans were ruling. Before the Moguls came, there were Pathans ruling. For one thousand years the Mohammedans invaded India, from 1000 A.D. up to 1947, till the end of the British period. India was under subjugation by so many foreigners: Mohammedans, Greeks, and so many others. Lastly, the Mohammedans ruled for eight hundred years. And the Britishers ruled for two hundred years. So now they have got independence, India. So at that time the Bengal was being ruled by the Mohammedans, Pathans, and their entrusted ministers were these Rupa and Sanatana. They were converted into practically Mohammedan. Hindu society was very strict at that time. Still they are very strict. Anyone serving a foreigner, he becomes at once ostracized. He is at once, I mean to say, rejected from the social intercourse. So these brothers, Rupa and Sanatana, because they accepted Mohammedan rulers' service as minister, they were outcasted from the... They were actually brahmanas by caste.

Some way or other, these Rupa and Sanatana contacted Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and they retired from their service and joined. And after all, they became the most important leaders of this movement, Rupa and Sanatana. Now, this Rupa and Sanatana, when they retired from their service, they brought home gold coins. At that time there was no currency notes. Actual value gold coins were in... Now, that gold coins was about two and a half ounce weight. Just like imagine what is the value now, whatever it may be. That means the estimation is some millions of rupees they brought home after their retirement. And they divided the money in this way: 50% for God... Whatever they accumulated, they set aside 50% for God or God's service. God means God's service. God is not want of your money. (chuckles) He is quite competent to earn money. He doesn't require anything. But if we give, it is our interest. It is our interest. So he set aside 50% of his accumulated money for God, 25% for the relatives, family members, and 25% he kept in some village banker or the original bankers, for emergency.

So that was the system. We can see from great sages and acaryas that whatever we earn... According to Bhagavad-gita, it is said, yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra. Whatever you earn, yat karosi yaj juhosi. The result of your work should be offered to the Supreme. Now, if it is not possible to offer the whole thing to the Supreme, so at least one should offer 50% of his income for God's purpose. That is the example we get from these acaryas. So 50% for God, 25%... Of course, the relatives, they expect something from the father or the chief of the family, some, I mean to say, gift. They expect something. But according to these acarya rulings, the gift was only 25%, not that whatever money I have got, I leave to my family and go singlehanded to God. Ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham [Bg. 4.11]. If God asks you, "What you have sacrificed for Me? You have come to Me." "No Sir. I have sacrificed everything for my family. For my family." That is not good. That is not yajna. Yajna means... Now, if you cannot spare your money separately for God's service, then you can engage yourself in God's service and expend the money for God's service. Don't offer your money in other's hand, but you spend yourself for God's cause. That will make you perfect. Yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra. That is explained in the next sloka.

istan bhogan hi vo deva
dasyante yajna-bhavitah
tair dattan apradayaibhyo
yo bhunkte stena eva sah
[Bg. 3.12]

Now, istan bhogan, whatever you have got for your subsistence, you should know it is given by God. Now, say for example these grains. The grains, they are given to you by God for eating. You cannot manufacture grain in your factory. You have manufactured or set up so many factories for manufacturing tools, machinery, motor cars, and so many other things for your comfort. But there is not a single factory in the whole world which can manufacture wheats, rice, grains, or vegetables, or something like that. So we should consider it that these foodstuff which we eat daily, they are produced by God's mercy, or they are given by God, istan bhogan hi vo devah, God or God's agent, whatever it may be.

Tair dattan. And if you take from... Even you produce, even you produce from your land, that is also God's mercy, because for agriculture, for example, if there is no rain, you cannot produce anything. Now, rain, you have no control over rain. We shall come to that point in the next sloka. But if you perform yajnas rightly, you'll have got, you will have sufficient rains to produce everything. Maharaja Yudhisthira's reign, his kingdom, his government was conducted in that way. Profusely, the nature was producing profusely. How profusely he was benefited by nature's gift, that is stated in the Bhagavata. I shall recite that, I mean to say, verse before you and explain to you next. So istan bhogan hi vo deva dasyante yajna-bhavitah. If you perform this sacrifice, then your necessities will be supplied profusely by the agents of the Supreme Lord. So mind that always, that we are not going to be idle. We shall go on with our work, as we are doing. But at the same time, we must perform yajnas, or sacrifice for the Supreme. Then we'll have sufficient for our necessities. And now, after having sufficient of our necessities, if we don't acknowledge or don't give the taxes of obligation, feel our obligation, then, He said, tair dattan apradayaibhyah.

Now, God or God's agent is supplying you so many things, and if you do not acknowledge or repay by sacrifice, then what is your position? Yo bhunkte. "One who enjoys," stena eva sah, "he is a thief." He is a thief, therefore, punishable. As a thief is punishable by the state law, similarly, one who takes advantage of these natural facilities and do not acknowledge it and do not offer sacrifice to the Supreme, then he is considered to be a thief. It is said in the Bhagavad-gita, stena eva sah. So yajna-sistasinah santo mucyante sarva-kilbisaih. So, we are becoming debtors and debtors life after life in this way, and the only way to liquidate our so many debts is to perform yajna.

Now, there are different rituals of yajna. If we want to perform such yajnas for sacrificing clarified butter, grains, there are different, so many kinds of yajnas. It is not possible in this age. For this age, the particular type of sacrifice which is recommended, we had some sample of it yesterday in our, this loft. Yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi su-medhasah [SB 11.5.32]. In this age it is very difficult to perform all those rituals. First thing, it is very difficult to obtain all the ingredients for sacrificing method. And people are not very well to do. They cannot secure also.

The symptoms of the people of this age is also described, prayenalpayusah sabhya kalav asmin yuge janah. Prayena, in this age people are generally short living. They are not living for more than sixty or seventy years. Formerly they were living more than hundred years. Gradually their duration of life is decreasing. And it is stated also that it will decrease to such an extent that any man who is living from twenty to thirty years, he will be considered a very old man. That is also stated in the Bhagavata. Of course, that has not yet come, but it will come in this age. So the symptoms of the people of this age are described, that people are of very short life.

Prayenalpayusah sabhya kalav asmin yuge janah mandah. And they are very lazy and slow. Slow and lazy means that they do not know that this life is meant for spiritual realization. So they are very lazy -- "All right, spiritual realization we shall see later on. Let us enjoy life. That's all." So this is a great disqualification of the human being, that they are not wake up for spiritual realization, lazy, mandah. And manda-bhagyah. Mandah sumanda-matayah.

And if somebody is at all interested for some spiritual enlightenment, then, unfortunately, mandah sumanda-matayah, they adopt some spiritual method which is not recognized. Spiritual realization with relationship with God is no spiritual realization. The whole spiritual realization means one must understand his relationship with the Supreme Lord. But generally in this age they want to avoid the conception of God, and at the same time, they want to be spiritually advanced. Therefore they are called sumanda-matayah, a, I mean to say, a very degraded form of spiritual realization, without conception of God. Sumanda-matayah, mandah, lazy, and if they are at all interested in some spiritual realization process, they try to avoid the conception of God.

Sumanda-matayah and manda-bhagyah. Manda-bhagyah means unfortunate. People of this age, mostly they are not very fortunate. In any part of the world, they are not very fortunate. They do not get things, desirable things, very easily. Our desirable things are four things for living purposes: ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithunam ca. Eating, sleeping, and defense, and mating. These are our generally, so far our body is concerned. So these things are also not easily available. So mandah sumanda-matayo manda-bhagya upadrutah [SB 1.1.10].

And at the same time, in spite of all these disqualifications, they are always disturbed in mind. Why disturbed? Now, they are... Roga-sokadibhih, for some lamentation and for some disease. So this is the condition of the people of this age, and it is very difficult for them to follow the system of sacrifice which was being performed in the older days.

Now, for them, in this age, Lord Caitanya recommended this sacrifice, this sankirtana-yajna which we are trying to perform here. Sankirtana. Yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi su-medhasah [SB 11.5.32]. Now, those who have got better brain, they will adopt this process of sankirtana-yajna for satisfaction of the Supreme Lord. That will be helpful for the men of this age. That is recommended in Bhagavatam.

Now, either you adopt this yajna or that yajna, according to your capacity, but you must have to perform yajna. Without yajna, you cannot be happy.

yajna-sistasinah santo
mucyante sarva-kilbisaih
bhunjate te tv agham papa
ye pacanty atma-karanat
[Bg. 3.13]

Now, pacanty atma-karanat means cooking. The cooking is the most important business of our life. Cooking... Nobody... A human being... We are not cats and dogs, and every human being has to cook things for eating. Now, this eating process... The Lord says that one who takes the eatables after the sacrifice, then he becomes free from all kinds of sinful reactions. And one who cooks for himself, for enjoyment, then he eats all kinds of sins, all kinds of sins. Yajna-sistasinah santah. Santa. Santa means saints and sages. They do not take anything without offering yajna. At least, whenever you take something, if you offer the same thing to the Lord -- "My Lord, it is by Your grace I have got this eatable. You kindly accept it and I shall take the remnants" -- this is yajna. This is also yajna.

Just yesterday we prepared some food cooperatively and offered to Lord and performed sankirtana, and we took it. This is the simplest process of performing yajna. Because we require food, so this was done here in this loft as a matter of example. But you can do it in your home also because you are cooking for your children, for yourself, for your wife, for family members. Now, if you cook nicely things which are to be offered to the Lord... Of course, we must be careful to prepare foodstuff, because we are going to offer to the Lord, and we must offer things which is acceptable by the Lord, at least. Of course, Lord can accept anything and everything. He is quite competent because He's all-powerful, almighty. But still, in the Bhagavad-gita it is said -- the Lord says -- patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati: [Bg. 9.26] "Anyone who gives Me these four things: patram, puspam, phalam, toyam... That means grains, vegetables, and flowers, fruits, all these things. Anyone who offers Me, I take that, offers with, tad aham bhakty-upahrtam, with devotion." Not that God is hungry, and therefore He is hankering after your offering of foodstuff. Not that. He is quite competent. He has got many things to eat. It is practically His things we are eating. So, but still, if we prepare foodstuff in that way and offer to the Supreme Lord, then, after offering, if we take, then we become free from all sinful reactions.

That is stated here, yajna-sistasinah santo mucyante. Mucyante means he becomes liberated, freed from. What is that? Sarva-kilbisaih: "All kinds of sinful reaction." That's all. [break]

They must be eating only sins, only sins. So we have to suffer the sinful reaction also. Ye pacanty atma-karanat.

Now, the thing is... Now, it is very easy, work. You are going to the store. Just like yesterday, or day before yesterday, Mr. Carl and Mr. Paul went to some store: "Oh, tomorrow it will be yajna." So the things were purchased with the purpose of performing. The same thing, we are purchasing from the store, but we are thinking, "I shall eat." That... If you transfer that epithet only, that "This is... We are purchasing things for God's eating," so there is no loss on your part, but you perform yajna. You perform yajna. This practice has to be done. Yajna-sistasinah santo mucyante sarva-kilbisaih. If you practice this simple thing, then you become free from all sinful reaction. And if you don't do this, then what happens? Now, bhunjate te tv agham papah. One who does not do this, he eats only sinful reaction, and he has to pay for that. He has to suffer for that. Pacanty atma-karanat. He has no relation with the Yajna or Visnu, but he thinks that "I shall eat."

So the beginning of the process of yajna in this age can be very easily done by everyone, either he is family man or single man or anyone. Everyone has to cook for himself. Now, that cooking may be done for the Supreme Lord. And after cooking the foodstuff, offer it to the Supreme Lord and perform this yajna, sankirtana,

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare,
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

[My dear Lord, and the spiritual energy of the Lord, kindly engage me in Your service. I am now embarrassed with this material service. Please engage me in Your service.]

Then you become free from all sinful... After all, whatever we are doing, we are committing some sort of, even unknowingly, even unknowingly.

There are recommendation in these Vedas, panca-yajna. Panca-yajna means that unknowingly we are killing many living entities. Suppose we are... When we are walking on the street there are many ants who are being killed on the pressure of our shoes. So that is also counted as sin. In God's kingdom, in God's, I mean to say, state. Just like here you have to pay by your life if you kill one man. If you commit a murder, you have to repay this murdering sin by your own life. That is, of course, imperfect law, man-made law. Similarly, in God's law also, if you kill any living entity, you have to suffer for that, because in the God's eye there is no question of man or animal or ant or fly or something like that. Every living entity is the son of God. Now, suppose your father has got five sons. One of them is worthless, is doing nothing. And if the other son says, "My dear father, this son, your youngest son, or this son, is worthless. He is doing nothing. Let us kill him," will your father agree? Because he is worthless, will your father agree? No, he will say, "No, no, no. You have nothing to do. He is not harming you. He is eating my, my subsistence. I am paying for his subsistence. Why you should kill him?" So similarly, in this material nature, all these living entities in different forms, they have come for material enjoyment and everything is being supplied by the Supreme Lord. We have no right to kill them. We have no right. According to God's law, if one is conscious... The same thing: Just like the father will never agree to kill a worthless child by the competent boy... No.

So consciously or unconsciously, we are committing. Suppose I am not willingly killing any animal, but unconsciously I am killing so many living entities by my walking, by my so many things. They are called panca-yajnas in the Vedic... So, and even if we do not kill animals, simply by eating vegetables, they are also life. It does not mean that vegetarians are not killing. They are also killing. The law is that a living entity lives by killing other living entities. That is the law. Those who have got hands, they are killing those who have got legs. Just like man is killing animal. The animal is eating the grass, those who have no legs. So this is the law. But our thing is that we have to offer yajna. Killing of animal does not mean that if a man kills a cow or goat for eating, he is killing, and those who are vegetarian, they are not killing. They are also killing. A vegetable has also got life. So it is not the question of killing. It is the question of offering yajna. It is the question of offering yajna.

Even animal eaters and flesh eaters, they have also some process for offering yajna. In the Vedic process, even the flesh eaters, they are also prescribed that "You can perform yajna like this." That yajna must be there. Yajna must be there. But so far we are concerned who are going to have Krsna consciousness, we have to take the instruction of Krsna as He says in the Bhagavad-gita. He says that patram puspam phalam toyam [Bg. 9.26]. He is asking foodstuff prepared from vegetable kingdom. Therefore we have to prepare things from vegetable kingdom nicely and very palatably and offer Krsna and then take it. This yajna will make us free from all kinds of sins and our life will be sublime. Thank you very much. Any question? (end)
