Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupadaSrila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: This is a conversation between Maharaja Pariksit and Sukadeva Gosvami. Maharaja Pariksit, five thousand years ago he was the emperor of the whole world. Formerly, up to five thousand years ago, the whole world was being controlled and ruled over by kings whose capital was Hastinapura, New Delhi. There was only one flag, only one ruler, one scripture, Vedic scripture, and the Aryans, Arya, they were the civilized persons. You Europeans, Americans, you are also Aryans. Indo-European stock. Maharaja Yayati, grandson of Maharaja Pariksit, he gave to his two sons the portion of eastern Europe, Greek and Roman. That is the history, Mahabharata. Mahabharata means great India. So there was no different religion. One religion, Vedic religion. Vedic religion means to accept the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the Supreme Person Absolute Truth. This is Vedic religion. Those who have read Bhagavad-gita, it is said there in the Fifteenth Chapter, vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyam [Bg. 15.15]. Vedic knowledge means to understand God. This is Vedic religion.

Later on, with the progress of Kali-yuga... Kali-yuga means the dark age or the sinful age or the age for argument, unnecessary talks and fight. This is called Kali-yuga. That is going on. Since the last five thousand years, the Kali-yuga has begun, and the beginning of Kali-yuga was cow-slaughtering. When Maharaja Pariksit was touring all over the world, he saw one black man was attempting to kill one cow. And Maharaja Pariksit saw this and immediately... The cow was trembling for being slaughtered. And Maharaja Pariksit saw, "Who is this man, trying to kill a cow in my kingdom?" So immediately he took his sword. That is ksatriya. Ksatriya means that... Ksat means injury, and trayate -- it is called ksatriya. There are persons who want to do harm to others. It has increased now. But during the time of Maharaja Pariksit's time, it was not allowed. The king is responsible. The government is responsible that any one of his subject, either animal or man, he is not disturbed, he feels secure of his property, of his person. And it is the duty of ksatriya to save him, to protect. This was the system of government. So that's a long story.

So Pariksit Maharaja was very pious. That was the system. A king, monarch is supposed to give protection everyone within the kingdom. It doesn't matter whether he is man or animal. Even trees. There was no law, unnecessarily cutting or killing, no. Actually, if you are reasonable, national... National means anyone who is born in that land. At the present moment the governments take care of the man only, not of the animals. What is this nationalism? What the animal has done that they should not be protected? So this is called Kali-yuga, the sinful age. Sinful age. That is increasing. That is increasing. But during Maharaja Pariksit's time, nobody could do anything injustice. Therefore it is said in the sastra that kamam vavarsa parjanyah [SB 1.10.4]. Because everything was right, the nature's way of giving us all comforts, all necessaries of life, that was also complete. As soon as you become injurious or harmful or disobedient to the laws of the king or God... King is supposed to be representative of God. Therefore, in India the king is accepted as the representative of God.

So formerly the kings were trained up in such a way that one man is sufficient to govern the whole universe, whole..., at least one planet. That was the system. The king was so pious. There are many statement, I mean to say, statements about these king. Why they were pious? Because they were also governed. The kings were governed by first-class brahmanas, sages. The brahmanas should not take part in the management of the government, but they would advise the ksatriya kings that "You rule over the citizens like this." If the king would not do that, the brahmanas had so much power -- there are many instances -- they will dethrone the king or kill him. But they will not occupy the power themselves. His son will be given the chance. This was the system.

So that Pariksit Maharaja was condemned to death within seven days. That is also very nice, interesting. Not interesting very much. It is very sorry plight, that Pariksit Maharaja was cursed by a brahmana boy to die within seven days, bitten by a snake. What was the incident? The incident was that Maharaja Pariksit was in the forest, hunting. Hunting is allowed only to the ksatriya kings. Because they were to rule over, and formerly the rogues and rascals by the order of king or king himself would kill him immediately. So they had to practice how to kill. And that practice was done by hunting some ferocious animal in the forest, not for eating. Nowadays hunting is going on for eating purpose. No, that is not the law. So Maharaja Pariksit was in the hunting excursion and he became very thirsty. So he entered one asrama of saintly person. He was at that time on meditation. So he entered, and he asked him, "Give me drinking water. I am very thirsty." He thought, "It is asrama." But the sage who was engaged in meditation could not hear him. So the king became little disgusted that "I am king. I am asking water, and this man is silent." So he became little enraged, and there was a dead snake. So he took that snake and coiled over his neck and went away.

So his one boy, he was ten, twelve years old. He was playing, and his friends told him that, "The king has insulted your father in this way." And the boy became very angry, "Oh, the king is so rude that he has insulted my father." He saw that a dead snake is over his neck. He immediately cursed Maharaja Pariksit that "You will die within seven days, bitten by a snake." So when he was crying very loudly and this, I mean to say, sound was going on, the saintly person, the sage, he got up. "What has happened, my dear boy, you are crying?" "No, no! The king has insulted you, so I have cursed him." Oh, he became very sorry that "You have cursed such a saintly king? Oh, you have brought defamation to the whole brahmana community. You have allowed Kali-yuga to come in. It is the Kali-yuga's conspiracy." Anyway he sent the news to the king that "My son foolishly has cursed you. This is... But what can I do? It is God's wish. It has been done. So you be prepared." Now, just see, even a boy born of a brahmana, how much he was powerful. If a ten years old, he could curse such a great king and he had to abide by that. This was the condition of ksatriya, brahmana, and vaisya and sudra.

Catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah [Bg. 4.13]. The human society, by the will of God there are four classes of men. The first-class is the brahmana; the second-class, the ksatriya; the third-class, the vaisyas; and all others, fourth-class, sudras. So at the present moment, practically there is no brahmana, no ksatriya, no vaisya, only sudras, fourth-class men. So you cannot expect any happiness guided by the fourth-class men. That is not possible. Therefore throughout the whole world there is chaotic condition. Nobody is happy. So this is essential that the human society must be divided into four divisions. The brahmana class means the first-class ideal men, so that by the seeing their character, their behavior, others will try to follow. Yad yad acarati sresthah [Bg. 3.21]. So this Krsna consciousness movement means we are trying to create some first-class men. This is Krsna consciousness, this movement. So therefore we have got these rules and regulation: no illicit sex, no meat-eating, no intoxication, no gambling. This is the preliminary qualification of a first-class man. So we are trying our bit to make some men ideal first-class men. But formerly it was there. Catur... Still there is.

You don't think that all men are of the same intelligence or same category. No. Still there is intelligent class of men. Just like those who are scientists or philosophers, religionists, they are supposed to be first-class men. But unfortunately, now nobody can recognize who is first-class and last class. So for proper management of the whole society the first-class, second-class, third-class men must be there. Just like in your body there are different parts of the body. The head, the arm, the belly, and the leg. This is natural. So without head, if we have simply the arms and belly and legs, it is a dead body. So unless you are guided, the human society, by the first-class men, the whole society is dead society. There must division according to catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma... [Bg. 4.13], not by birth, but by quality. So anyone can be trained up first class, second class, as he likes. That is called civilization. Some men should be trained up as first-class men, some men should be trained up as second-class men, and some men should be trained up as third-class men, and balance, who cannot be trained up, they can assist the other three higher class. That is called sudra. So... [break]

...that is not possible. A human being, if he is properly trained up, if he is willing to take the instruction he can be made first-class. Never mind. By birth one may be born in a low class, it doesn't matter. But by training, he can become first class. That is the injunction of the Bhagavad-gita.

mam hi partha vyapasritya
ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah
striyah sudrah tatha vaisya
te 'pi yanti param gatim
 [Bg. 9.32]

Param gatim. Param gatim means to go back to home, back to Godhead. That is our real home, the spiritual world. And live there eternally, blissfully, with full knowledge. That is our real position. So here we have come in this material world for material enjoyment. And the more we are making plan for material enjoyment, the more we are becoming entangled. That we do not know. They are thinking that material sense enjoyment is the aim of life. No, that is not the aim of life. That is the way to become more and more entangled. For sense enjoyment I have got this now body, Indian body, you have got this Australian or American or European body. But you have to change this body. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. We are eternal. Na jayate na mriyate va kadacit. The soul does not take birth; neither it dies. We simply change body.

Tatha dehantara-praptih. Just like we are changing our body. In mother's womb we had a small body. It grows, and we come out. Again it grows. Grows... It is not actually growing, it is changing. The child is changing his body to baby, the baby is changing his body to boy, and the boy is changing his body to youthhood. Then... in this way you are changing body. That you have got experience. You had a child's body -- you remember. Or you had a boy's body -- you remember. But the body is no longer existing. But you are existing. Therefore the conclusion is that when this body will be no more fit for existing we shall have to accept another body. This is called tatha dehantara-praptih. So we have to change. That is nature's law. The soul is immortal. Na jayate na mriyate va kadacit na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. The soul is not finished, simply a particular type of body being finished, no. The people do not know it. And because they are simply engaged in sinful activities, their brain has become so dull that they cannot understand this simple truth that as you are changing body in this life therefore you will change this body to another life. This is very simple truth. But at the advancement of material civilization, we have become so dull and rascal that we cannot understand it.

But India still, although it is so fallen, you go to a remote village. A common man, he has no education. He believes. He believes. And here in the western countries, I saw many many big, big professors. They have no idea. I met one big professor, Kotovsky, in Moscow. He said, "Swamiji, after finishing this body, everything is finished." Just see. He is a big professor and in charge of a very big department, Indology. He has no idea. But this is not the fact. The fact is that we are all sparks, spiritual spark, part and parcel of God. Somehow or other, we have come into this material world for sense enjoyment. In the spiritual world there is no sense enjoyment. There is sense purification. In the material world the senses are impure. They simply want to enjoy material things. So Krsna consciousness means that you have to purify your senses. That is the way.

sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam
tat-paratvena nirmalam
hrsikena hrsikesa-
sevanam bhaktir ucyate
 [Cc. Madhya 19.170]

This bhakti means that we have to clear ourself from the designations. What is that designation? Everyone is thinking "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am European," "I am Australian," "I am cat," "I am dog, "I am this, "I am that," -- bodily. We have to cleanse this bodily conception of life that "I am not this body." Aham brahmasmi: "I am spirit soul." This we have to realize. Then there will be no distinction that "Here is an American, here is an Australian, here is an Hindu, here is a Muslim, here is a tree, here..." No. Panditah sama-darsinah [Bg. 5.18]. Panditah means learned, one who knows things as they are. For them...

vidya-vinaya-sampanne
brahmane gavi hastini
suni caiva sva-pake ca
panditah sama-darsinah
 [Bg. 5.18]

A person, very learned, vidya and very gentle... vidya means, educated means, he is gentle, sober. He is not rogues and ruffian. That is vidya. That is the test of education. He must be very sober and silent. That is called gentleman, in one word. So vidya-vinaya, one gentleman, very learned scholar, vidya-vinaya-sampanne brahmane gavi, and a cow, and hasti, an elephant, vidya-vinaya-sampanne brahmane gavi hastini, and suni-suni means dog, and svapak... Svapak means a dog-eater. There are many persons, they prefer to eat different types of flesh. But one who eats the dog's flesh, he is considered to be very lower class. So suni caiva sva-pake ca panditah sama-darsinah [Bg. 5.18]. One who is pandita, learned, he sees every one, them, on the same level. What is that same level? Spirit soul. He does not see the outward body. That is called brahma-darsin. Panditah sama-darsinah. And if one becomes situated in that position,

brahma-bhutah prasannatm
na socati na kanksati
samah sarvesu bhutesu
mad-bhaktim labhate param
 [Bg. 18.54]

When one is self-realized that he is not this body, he is the spirit soul, brahma-bhutah, then what are the symptoms? Now, prasannatma: he becomes immediately very jolly. So long we are materially engrossed, bodily concept of life, there will be always anxiety. This is the test. Anyone who is in anxiety, means he is materially situated. And anyone who is elevated to the spiritual platform, he is prasannatma. He is jolly. What is the meaning of prasannatma? Na socati na kanksati. He does not want anything, and if anything he has got, if he has lost, he does not cry for it. That's all. Here in the material world we are hankering after something which we do not possess. And if we possess something, if it is lost, then we cry. Two business: Socana and akanksa. Everyone is trying to be very big man. That is called akanksa. And if he is lost of his possession, then he cries. So these two things will be finished if you become spiritually situated.

brahma-bhutah prasannatma
na socati na kanksat
samah sarvesu bhutesu...
 [Bg. 18.54]

Unless one is spiritually realized, he cannot see equally everyone. Then samah sarvesu bhutesu mad-bhaktim labhate param. Then one can become real devotee of the Lord, after surpassing the brahma-bhutah stage. So this bhakti line is not so easy. But by Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy we have installed the Deity here in your country. You are very fortunate that Caitanya Mahaprabhu has come to your country to teach you how you become free of all anxieties. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission. Everyone is full of anxiety, but everyone can be freed from all the anxieties if he follows the path chalked out by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And what is Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's instruction? Very simple.

harer nama harer nama harer nama eva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha
 [Cc. Adi 17.21]

This is not Caitanya Mahaprabhu's personal version. This is in the scripture, Vedic scripture. Brhan-Naradiya-Purana. This instruction is there. As people are fallen in this age the method also has been offered very simple. They cannot follow any strong or severe austerities. It is not possible. They have been recommended simply to chant the holy name of God. That's all. Anyone can do. It is not difficult at all. Then if you say that "You are from India. Your Caitanya is Indian, and He is recommending Hare Krsna. Why shall I chant? I have got my own God." All right, if you have got your own God, then you chant His name. Caitanya Mahaprabhu doesn't say that you chant simply Krsna's name. If you have got any relationship with God and if you know His name and address, (laughter) then you chant His name. Unfortunately, you do not know who is God; neither you know His address, neither His activities. So take this Krsna. Here is a solid name. And we give you His address, His father's name, His mother's name, everything. So if you have got your own God's name, Caitanya Mahaprabhu said you can chant. Have you got any name, anyone, God's name? Nobody knows?

Devotee: Jehovah.

Prabhupada: Jehovah. All right you chant Jehovah. So that is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's recommendation, that if you think that this is God's name, you chant. Namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-saktih tatrarpita niyamitah smarane na kalah. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's instruction, that holy name of God is as good as God. We cannot see God. We can see, but not immediately. When we are advanced we can see God, talk with Him. But because we are not competent now, so if we know this is the name of God, let us chant it. That's all. Is it very difficult job? Anyone will say it is very difficult job? Chant the name of, holy name of God. Then what will happen? Ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. Your, if you chant the holy name of God, then your heart which is considered to be mirror... Just like you see your face on the mirror, similarly, you can see your position on the mirror of the heart, core of the heart. You can see. That is called meditation. So at the present moment our heart is covered with the dust of material conception. "I am Indian," "I am American," "I am this," "I am that," "I am that." This is all dust. You have to cleanse this. Just like on the mirror if there is a layer of dust you cleanse it. Then you see your real face.

So Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, ceto-darpana-marjanam: "By chanting the holy name of the Lord, you will gradually cleanse the dust which is covering the core of your heart." Very simple thing. Go on chanting. And then what will be the position? Bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam: "This blazing fire of anxieties of material existence will be over immediately." Simply by this method, chanting. If you have got any name, if you have got objection to chant Hare Krsna, so whatever name of God you know, you chant. This is our movement. We don't say that you have to... But this is accepted by Caitanya Mahaprabhu, that harer nama [Cc. Adi 17.21]. So if you have no objection, you can chant Hare Krsna. And if you think that "The Hare Krsna is imported from India. We shall not chant," all right, you chant your own God's name. Where is the objection? But chant the name of, holy name of God. That is our propaganda.

Ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. And as soon as you become cleansed of your heart, then the anxiety... Na socati na kanksati. You'll gradually increase. Then you will understand that "I am neither American, neither Indian, nor cat, nor dog, but I am the part and parcel of the Supreme Lord." Then, if you understand that you are part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, then you will understand your business. Just like in your body you have got so many parts and parcels. You have got the hands, you have got the legs, you have got the head, you have got the fingers, you have got the ear, you have got the nose -- so many parts. So what is the business of all these parts of your body? The business of parts of the body to maintain the body properly, to serve the body. Just like this finger is there. I am feeling some incomfort; immediately my finger comes and serves, automatically. Therefore the conclusion is that it is the business of the part and parcel of God to serve God. That is the only business. Natural business. So when you are engaged in the service of the Lord, because you understand -- by chanting the holy names Lord you will understand who is Lord and what is His advice, what does He want service from me -- then you will be engaged in that service. That is the perfection of your life. This is Krsna consciousness movement. Ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam sreyah-kairava-candrika-vitaranam [Cc. Antya 20.12].

And as soon as you become cleansed of all dirty things, then your actual progress of life begins. Just like kairava-candrika, just like the moon, on the first day it is just like a line, then gradually increases; the body and the moonshine increases. Therefore this comparison is given. The more you become Krsna consciousm the shining of your life increases. Sreyah-kairava-candrika-vitaranam vidya-vadhu-jivanam. Then this life will be full of knowledge. Vidya-vadhu-jivanam. Anandambudhi-vardhanam. And to increase the life of knowledge means ananda. Ananda means pleasure. We want pleasure. So you will get more and more pleasing life. Anandambudhi-vardhanam. And prati-padam purnamrtasvadanam. And every step of life, as we are... In the material way of life we are experienced, only unpleasure, difficulties, the just opposite. Anandambudhi-vard... Ambudhi means the ocean. So this ocean does not increase, but when you come to the spiritual ocean of ananda, blissfulness, it will increase daily.

Just like these boys. They are coming from Europe, America. They are not Indians. But why they are sticking to this Krsna consciousness movement unless they are increasing their transcendental pleasure? They are not fools and rascals. They are educated. Why they have taken to this anandambudhi-vardhanam. It is increasing their transcendental pleasure. So anyone who takes to this process, he will increase his anandambudhi-vardhanam. Prati-padam purnamrtasvadanam. And he will be able to taste what is the meaning of life, what is the meaning of pleasure. Param vijayate sri-krsna-sankirtanam: "All glories to the chanting of Hare Krsna mantra." So this is the process. Our Krsna consciousness movement is spreading this knowledge as far as possible, and by Krsna's grace we have got this temple in Melbourne, and it is all very creditful to our disciple, Sriman Madhudvisa Svami. And you take advantage of it. That is my only request. If you do not do anything, simply come and join chanting, you will gradually know very soon.

Atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih [Cc. Madhya 17.136]. Krsna, His name, His form, His activities, His qualities, we cannot understand with these blunt material senses. It is not possible. Atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih. "Then? We have got this only possession, indriyas. How we shall understand?" Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau. If you engage your senses in the service of the Lord, svayam eva sphuraty adah, then Krsna will reveal to you that "Here I am." This is the process. Now this word is very significant. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau. Jihva means tongue. If you simply engage your tongue in the service of the Lord, you will gradually develop. So how to engage the tongue? It is not said that "If you see, or if you touch, if you smell," no. "If you taste." So what is the business of the tongue? The business of the tongue -- that we can taste nice foodstuff and we can vibrate. Do these two jobs. Vibrate with your tongue Hare Krsna, and take as much as possible prasadam. (laughter) And you become a devotee. Thank you very much. (devotees offer obeisances) [break]

Madhudvisa: Is it possible for a dog-eater to become a first-class man?

Prabhupada: Oh, yes. Engage this tongue for these two business. Chant Hare Krsna and take prasadam. He will forget dog-eating. (laughter) There is no exception. Everyone can become Krsna conscious if he follows, beginning, these two rules: chant Hare Krsna and take prasadam. That's all. Test it. Make a trial. The temple is here. We are inviting. Come here. Do these two business. And our Madhudvisa Maharaja is ready to give you prasadam and chance for dancing and singing. That's all. Where is the difficulty? You haven't got to pay for it. No loss. If there is any gain, why don't you try it?

Madhudvisa: Srila Prabhupada, why is it necessary for someone to come here and chant Hare Krsna and take prasadam?

Prabhupada: Just to... Because here is the center. Everything is being done properly. You will learn. Just like you have to go to school or college to learn. So just similarly, if you have to take the education of spiritual life, they will come here and see how people are doing, ideal. And you should be ideal. If you are not ideal, then it will be useless to open center. You behave nicely; they will come, they will see, and they will learn. If you go to some school and the professors are rascals then what you will learn? It is both, reciprocal. You shall act as professor, teachers. Your life should be ideal, and they will come and see, and they will learn.

Girl: Srila Prabhupada, if the kings were taught to govern the whole universe, does that mean all the worlds, all the worlds in the universe?

Madhudvisa: She's just wondering how it would be possible for one king to rule the whole world? It seems like it is very difficult. Nowadays we have so many leaders and they cannot manage...

Prabhupada: Forget that. Why you are thinking that you cannot rule over; therefore others cannot? You are thinking in your term. But there are. That is possible. So that is not our field of activities. It is others', politics and... But let us... Our business is how to improve our spiritual condition of life. Even if you don't rule over the world, it doesn't matter. So why you are anxious to rule over the world? It is not our business. You chant Hare Krsna and take prasadam. All right, chant Hare Krsna. (end)

Why We Can't Forget About God

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupadaSrila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: ....five years old. It is a school. He was preaching amongst the class-friends this Krsna consciousness movement. You have seen the picture of Prahlada Maharaja standing on the table -- of course, there was no tables in those days -- and speaking to his class-friends about devotional service. The friends of Prahlada Maharaja, they objected, that "We are now children. Let us play now. We shall see about God consciousness when we are old enough, or at the time of death we shall see to it." Prahlada Maharaja said,

kaumara acaret prajno
dharman bhagavatan iha
durlabham manusam janma
tad apy adhruvam arthadam
 [SB 7.6.1]

Prahlada Maharaja said, "My dear friends, Krsna consciousness should be learned from the very beginning of life, kaumara." The learning should be beginning between five years old to ten years old, between this time. This Bhagavata-dharma especially, first thing is, the children from the very beginning of their life should be given instruction on religious principles of life. What are the religious principles? Religious principle means to understand what is God. That is religious principle. It doesn't matter whether you are Christian or Hindu or Muslim or any... There are many hundreds and thousands patterns of religious system, but according to our Bhagavata school, we accept that religion as first class which teaches how to love God. That is religion. Sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhoksaje [SB 1.2.6]. That system of religion is first class wherein the followers are given lessons how to love God. Unfortunately, at the present moment there is no question of how to teach them for loving God. They deny the existence of God. This is the present situation. People have become so rascal that they do not believe in the existence of God. Or somebody believes... Not believes. That is affirmed. Some of them say, "God is dead. Now we have to take to social work, political work. Let the subject matter of God be set aside." Especially in India. In India, the country where still God consciousness is so strong, the government wants that they should forget about this God business. So this is Kali-yuga. Kali-yuga means simply for fight on trifling things and forget God.

So anyway, apart from their business, our Krsna consciousness movement is especially meant for awakening the dormant Krsna consciousness of every man. Krsna consciousness is there in everyone. Otherwise how these European, American young men, young girls, children, they are taking part in it? It is not that I have bribed them. Sometimes the Christian missionaries go to our country. They bribe the poorer classes of men, and they become Christians -- not by understanding the philosophy or the religion. Because India is poverty-stricken, so if you do some social work, give them some medicine, give them some financial help, they think of, being obliged, and whatever you like, you can tell them. Similarly, in Muhammadan time also, all the Indian Muhammadans, they were not coming from very respectable high family. You know, in India there are four classes of men: brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra. Out of them, brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya are considered the topmost class. Now everything has deteriorated. So we find from the history of this conversion, from the sudra class, lower than the sudra class, not very many from the higher class. So still, that was based on bribing, giving some social help, political help, financial help. But our Krsna consciousness movement I started in 1966. I came here with seven dollars and a few books. So it was not possible for me to bribe these educated young boys and girls. That was not possible. But they accepted the philosophy very seriously and gradually it is growing. Now there are many Indians, they are not here, but other than the Indians, they are here. So the thing is I am very glad that you take something very seriously. That is very good. So for the children also, kaumara acaret prajnah. Prajnah means one who is intelligent. He should begin learning Krsna consciousness from the child life. That is our basic principle of this Gurukula. We are trying to generate some population fully Krsna conscious so that they may preach in future very nicely.

So Prahlada Maharaja says, dharman: "People, children should be taught from the very beginning of their life about dharma, religion." What is that religion? Religion means to accept God as the supreme authority. That's all. The sum and substance. And try to love Him. Just like very, if you have got a very wealthy friend or very learned friend or beautiful friend, you try to love him. You want to make friendship with him. So God means He is the most richest, most powerful, most learned, most beautiful. In this way, there is no comparison of God's opulence. So why should we not be attracted with God? If some rich man in your quarter attracts the attention of the neighbor, neighborers... If God is the richest man... He is not man; He is God. But He looks like man. He... Just like we see Krsna here, He has got also two hands and two legs. That is His original form. If He likes, He can expand thousands of hands and thousands of legs, as it was exhibited to Arjuna in His virat-purusa form. But the original form is Krsna, adi-purusam. Advaitam acyutam anadim ananta... Although He can expand Himself in many millions of forms, but His original form is Krsna.

So this Krsna consciousness movement is directly connecting people with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and especially these children are required to learn this Krsna consciousness from the very beginning of their life. Because this human form of life is the only chance to understand God. You cannot understand God in any other form, in the form of a dog, in the form of a cat, or even the form of a demigod. Demigods, they are very rich, opulent, so sometimes they forget. Out of very much being affluent, people forget Krsna. Therefore the demigods also sometimes forget. And what to speak of the animals. So this human form of life is the only chance to understand God. Therefore if children are not given lesson about God... There is no guarantee that we will live one hundred years. There is no guarantee. Anyone, at any moment, can pass away. Therefore, before the next death comes, one must be fully Krsna conscious. That is the highest achievement of life.

Thank you very much. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Prabhupada: Srimad-Bhagavatam, Sixth Canto, Chapter One, verse number nineteen. Is that verse number right?

Pusta Krsna: Nineteen. Yes. Sakrn.

Prabhupada: (devotees repeat)

sakrn manah krsna-padaravindayor
nivesitam tad-guna-ragi yair iha
na te yamam pasa-bhrtas ca tad-bhatan
svapne 'pi pasyanti hi cirna-niskrtah
 [SB 6.1.19]

So sakrn manah. Sakrt means even in once in ecstasy, mind, krsna padaravindayoh, the lotus feet of Krsna, if one thinks, nivesitam, with full ecstasy and absorption, if one thinks very nicely about the lotus feet of Krsna, tad-anuragi, being attached, anuragi, yaih, anyone, iha, in this material world... Then what happens? Na te yamam pasa-bhrtas ca tad-bhatan. Yama-pasa... Yamaraja, the superintendent of death... After death one goes to Yamaraja. Not the devotees, but the nondevotees. Na te yamam pasa-bhrtas ca tad-bhatan svapne: "Even in dream they do not see Yamaraja." Svapne 'pi pasyanti cirna-niskrtah. And completely freed from all reaction of sinful activities simply by once thinking of Krsna. We are chanting Hare Krsna maha-mantra, but if we become at least once in life in ecstasy in chanting Hare Krsna, then all our sinful reaction of life is finished. Unfortunately, we again commit sinful life. Otherwise, by chanting once Hare Krsna mantra, one becomes immediately free from the reaction.

But the maya is so powerful that it induces again to commit sinful life. So we have to promise... Just like Jagai Madhai. They were delivered by Caitanya Mahaprabhu. They were very sinful, their activities. Sinful means that has become ordinary things nowadays in Kali-yuga. They... What is that sinful? They were drunkards, illicit sex, meat-eater, and gambling. These four things, they were very much addicted, so they were rejected from the society. The society was so pure. Five thousand years before, Pariksit Maharaja gave the Kali-yuga four places. First of all he wanted to kill Kali. Then he begged pardon, "Sir, I am also your praja, a citizen in your kingdom. So it is my business to kill these animals. So why you are punishing me? So give me protection. What can I do?" So Pariksit Maharaja allowed, "No, you cannot do in my kingdom. You have to go out." So Pariksit Maharaja was the emperor of the whole world, so the Kali, he said, "Sir, you say go out of your kingdom, but where is not your kingdom? Everywhere, throughout the whole world, where shall I go?" Then he designated that "You stay in these four places." "What are those places?" "Now, where illicit sex, brothel, prostitutes are going on. You can live there. And where unnecessary animal killing is going on, you can stay here. And where drinking, intoxication, is encouraged, you can stay there. And where gambling is there, you can stay there." So he could not find any place throughout the whole world where these things were going on. That is the kingdom of Maharaja Pariksit. There was no chance. So it is the government's duty to see that people are very nicely ruled so that they become all pious. That is the duty of the government. Imam rajarsayo viduh [Bg. 4.2]. Because if the king, monarch, is properly instructed, and if he orders that "My subject, my citizens, should follow this order," then it will be automatically followed out. By king's order...

So in the Kali-yuga, this age, there is no such king. There is no such government. Therefore people are becoming polluted. It is the duty of the guru, the duty of the parents, duty of the government to train people in such a way that they may become pious, sinless. But they do not believe, even in the next life, that "If we act impiously, then we have to suffer next life." They avoid to believe that there is next life. But there is next life. In the morning we were talking about this. How you can say there is no next life? The child has got next life: a boy. The boy has got next life: a young man. And the young man has next life, to become old man. Similarly, the old man has got next life. It is very common logic. And it is spoken by Krsna, the supreme authority. Even if you do not understand, your dull brain, but we have to accept the words of Krsna. That is the critical point. If we take Krsna's instruction, everything will be solved. There will be no problem.

Therefore we are presenting Bhagavad-gita As It Is to induce people to take as it is. Don't make any amendment, interpretation. As Krsna says, you do it; then your life is successful. The instruction is there. It is not that we are manufacturing some ideas. No. That is not our business. We are following the same principle as Krsna said to the sun-god:

imam vivasvate yogam
proktavan aham avyayam
vivasvan manave prahur
manur iksvakave 'bravit
 [Bg. 4.1]

evam parampara praptam
imam rajarsayo...
 [Bg. 4.2]

The same thing. We have no difficulty. If you say, "How can I take instruction from Krsna? Krsna is not present." No, Krsna is present by His instruction. The Bhagavad-gita is there. Not that it is necessary... Krsna is always present, but you have no eyes to see. That is another thing. Krsna is present everywhere. Andantara-stham paramanu cayantara-stham. Krsna is present everywhere, even within the atom. But we cannot see. That is another thing. I have no eyes to see. But if I develop Krsna consciousness, then I'll see constantly Krsna. This is the effect. Premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santah sadaiva hrdayesu vilokayanti [Bs. 5.38]. Krsna consciousness means to develop love for Krsna. So one who has developed this love for Krsna, he can see Krsna every moment. There is no difficulty. Krsna is present. So even though you think that Krsna is not present, but He is present by words, Bhagavad-gita. He is absolute. Krsna, the person, and Krsna's words, Bhagavad-gita, there is no difference. Advaya-jnana, no duality. Everything is one, absolute. Krsna is absolute, Krsna's instruction is also absolute, Krsna's pastimes absolute. Everything. That is Absolute Truth. There is no difference. In the material world the name and the thing is different. Suppose here is mango, so mango is the thing and mango is the name. So if I simply say "Mango, mango, mango," there is no mango. There must be the thing, mango. That is duality. This is the world of duality. Absolute means the name mango and the mango thing is the same. Otherwise what is the... If they're different, then what is the use of chanting Krsna? Krsna chanting means Krsna, this word, and Krsna the person, the same. Therefore by constant chanting means constantly associating with Krsna. Then we are becoming purified. Purified. There is no difference.

So we have to understand this philosophy. Everything is there in the book. So we have to read it carefully, understand it through the teacher's or guru's instruction. So in this way, if our mind becomes fixed up in Krsna the person or the Krsna, Hare Krsna word, sakrt, once only... Sakrt means once only, yes. Krsna padaravindayoh, pandaro(?), nivesitam, fully absorbed. This practice, Krsna consciousness, means to practice this, how to fix up the mind always at the lotus feet of Krsna. Krsna also advised the same thing: man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. Mayy asakta-manah partha yogam yunjan mad-asrayah. This is yoga, meditation. If you simply sit down in a place and you... It is recommended that in a solitary place and sitting straight, right angle, and not closing the eyes but half open -- this is yoga practice -- and looking over this point of nose, and observing celibacy, brahmacarya, following the rules and regulations, in this way you can practice yoga. Not that you can do whatever nonsense you like and you have become a yogi. This bluff is going on. The yoga system -- first yoga indriya-samyamah, to control the senses. And now it is going on, transcendental meditation, that "After practicing yoga you will increase your sex power." This is going on. And that is accepted as yoga, and they are paying for it, thousands, yes. This is going on. Yoga-indriya... Just the opposite. People want sense gratification. If somebody encourages, "Yes, you take this mantra and you'll be very powerful sex enjoyer," so people will pay for that: "Yes, give me that." This rascaldom is going on. You see? So what we can do? We can simply explain, but people want to be cheated. That is the thing. Satya bole to mare lata(?) There is a Hindi proverb that "If somebody speaks the truth, it is received in loggerhead, and if he speaks lies, all bluffing, then it is relieved and payment is there."

One scientist in Delhi, our Delhi festival, he said very nicely that "We scientists, we are just like learning how to bark like dog." Yes. He said very plainly. Because a dog is barking, everyone knows. But if there is a tent and advertisement, yes, that "Mr. such and such will bark like a dog," and people will come and pay ten dollars' fee: "A man is barking. Very wonderful. Let us see." So these rascals, the chemists, they are trying to manufacture living being within test tube, and they are becoming very famous: "Oh, now they are making life in the..." Rascal, there are so many hundreds and millions of life are there, every day being created. What credit you'll get if you manufacture a life within test tube? But the rascals, they are: "Oh, scientists. He is now going to manufacture life." "No, show me how made..." "Yes, we are trying. It will be in future." Yes. Our Svarupa Damodara... There was one professor. He came to California. He was speaking how from matter life can be there. He has written one volume, book, and he has got Nobel Prize, and the book's name is Evolution of Chemicals and Life. So he is also doctor in chemistry, our Svarupa Damodara. He was also present there. As soon as he asked, "Sir, if I give you the chemicals, can you manufacture life?" at that time he said, "That I cannot say." "Why you cannot say? You are speaking that 'Combination of chemical brings in life.' " We are writing one book that life is from life, not from matter. That is not possible. These rascals are simply bluffing that "From chemicals life can be manufactured." No. We challenge.

So these things are going on. We want to be cheated, and there are so many cheaters. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanas te 'pisa-tantryam uru-damni baddhah. The Bhagavata has discussed everything. These rascals are andha, blind, and one blind man is promising to lead other blind men. So what will be the result? If one man is not blind, he can lead hundreds of blind men. That is fact. But if the leader is also blind, then what is the use of leading such blind men? So that is discussed in the Srimad-Bhagavatam:

na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum
durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah
andha yathandhair upaniyamanas
te 'pisa-tantryam uru-damni baddhah
 [SB 7.5.31]

Isa tantra, by the laws of nature or laws of God... Laws of nature means laws of God. They accept, "By nature it is..." But they do not know who is behind this nature. That is intelligence. Nature is dead matter. It cannot... Just like this microphone. This is matter, material. What is that? Some iron, some other thing, some wood, some... But this iron-wood combination cannot take place and become a microphone. No. There is a life behind this iron and wood, and he has manufactured. Therefore it is working. But these rascals, they are thinking that combination of this iron and wood and something else, it has become microphone. No. It is a machine, but machine is manipulated and manufactured by life, not that automatically the iron-wood becomes a machine. No. So these rascals, they cannot understand that... The nature is working, that's all right, but how it is working? What is the background? That they do not know. That answer is in the Bhagavad-gita. Mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa-caracaram: [Bg. 9.10] "Under My superintendence it is working," Krsna says. That's a fact. You might have manufactured a very big machine. That is all manufactured by some light. Not that the iron and wood has come together, a skyscraper building -- the bricks have come all together automatically. They say, "By chance." What is this nonsense? By chance these bricks have come and piled and become rooms? Just see. These things are going on, rascals. Therefore andha yathandhair upaniyamanah [SB 7.5.31]. (aside:) Let him sleep somewhere.

So this is going on. Don't be misled. Isa-tantrya, by the laws of nature, we are bound up tight, hands and legs. We are not independent. You cannot do anything independently. You are completely under the clutches of material nature. And behind the material nature is Krsna. Therefore our business is to surrender to Krsna and take knowledge from Him, and then you become perfect. That is explained here, sakrn manah krsna-padaravindayor nivesitam tad-guna-ragi yair iha. Who will take instruction from Krsna? Tad-guna-ragi. When you understand that "Krsna is the Supreme. We have to take instruction from Him." Nobody is perfect except Krsna. Or one who follows Krsna, he is perfect. Krsna is perfect; one who follows Krsna, he is perfect. Just like a child. He does not know what it is, but if he takes instruction from his father or teacher that "This is microphone," so when he says, "This is microphone," this is perfect. He may be child, but because he has learned from his father or teacher, "This is microphone," and he says, "This is microphone. This is this," then it is perfect. So the instruction of Krsna is perfect, and the teacher or guru who speaks the same thing as Krsna says, that is perfect. And if he manufacture his own ideas and becomes more than Krsna, then he's a rascal number one. There is no benefit.

Thank you very much. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Prabhupada: Hare Krsna. Where is Pradyumna? Where is Pradyumna? Eh?

Devotee: There he is.

Prabhupada: Hare Krsna.

Devotees: Hare Krsna.

Prabhupada: All right, take it. Begin.

Pradyumna: Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya, (etc. leads chanting of verse and synonyms:)

sri-suka uvaca
evam etan nigaditam
prstavan yad bhavan mama
nrnam yan mriyamananam
manusyesu manisinam

Sri Sukadeva Gosvami said: "Maharaja Pariksit, as you have inquired from me as to the duty of the intelligent man who is on the threshold of death, so I have answered you."

Prabhupada: (interrupts the chanting of the sloka) Repeat once, twice more. (chanting resumes) Next? Kirtanananda Maharaja, you can.

Kirtanananda: Translation?

Prabhupada: No. First of all read.

Kirtanananda: Chant?

Prabhupada: Yes. (Kirtanananda Swami chants, Srila Prabhupada corrects him) Mriyamananam. Karandhara. (he chants) You... Anyone? More? (chanting resumes) Very good. Anyone else? Hrdayananda? (he chants verse) So, translation? Read translation? Translation? Oh, no, word meaning, yes.

Pradyumna: (reads synonyms, then:) Translation: "Sri Sukadeva Gosvami said: Maharaja Pariksit, as you have inquired from me as to the duty of the intelligent man who is on the threshold of death, so I answered you."

Prabhupada: Now, this is the important part of the verse, that "man who is on the threshold of death." Who can say that "I am not on the threshold of death?" Is there any man in this universe who can say that "I am not on the threshold of death." Can anyone say? Everyone is on the threshold of death. That's a fact. But such questions are made amongst them... Everyone is subject to death, and threshold, on the threshold of death. Nobody can say that "I shall live for so many years." No guarantee. Everyone is on the threshold of death. Any moment, we can die. Therefore it is said,"As sure as death." All other things may be not sure, but death is sure. Therefore, before death, one... Manisinam, manusyesu manisinam. Not ordinary man. Manisi. Manisi means thoughtful. They question, "What is to be done now, before death comes? Shall I die like cats and dogs, or shall I die like human being?" This is the question. Cats and dogs dying, nobody cares. But a human being dying, there are so many ceremonies, mourning.

Because human life is important. So Pariksit Maharaja, although he was on the threshold of death, he was allowed seven days time. He was cursed to death, but he was given seven days time. "You, king, you shall die within seven days --  after seven days --  being bitten by serpent." This is was the curse given to him. He accepted. He could counteract it. Pariksit Maharaja was Vaisnava. He was very powerful. But he thought that "Yes, I am offender. The brahmana boy has cursed me, I shall accept it." So, he prepared himself for death. For seven days he placed himself on the bank of the Ganges without drinking a drop of water, and for seven days continually, he heard Srimad-Bhagavatam from Sukadeva Gosvami. That was decided. Harer namanukirtanah. In any circumstances of life, hearing and chanting is prescribed. So Pariksit... Sukadeva Gosvami said, "My dear King, I have explained to you what is to be done now, at the time of death." So we should take example or instruction from the behavior of Pariksit Maharaja that on the threshold of death...Everyone is on the threshold of death, but the foolish persons, they do not know. Foolish person thinks that "I shall live forever." That is foolishness.

ahany ahani bhutani
gacchantiha yamalayam
sesah sthavaram icchanti
kim ascaryam atah param

Yudhisthira Maharaja was asked by Dharmaraja, "What is the most wonderful thing within this world?" He answered this, ahany ahani bhutani gacchantiha yamalayam, "Everyone, every moment, is going to the Yamaraja's place, the superintendent of death, where a man's life is scrutinizingly studied, what he has done, and..." I say man, not animal. Animal, they have no such thing wrong or right, because it is animal. But a human being must have this conscience, right or wrong. Pravrtti, nivrtti.

In the Bhagavad-gita it is said, pravrttim ca nivrttim jana na vidur asurah. Asura-jana, those who are demons, they do not know these two things --  pravrtti and nivrtti --  what is our duty and what is our not duty. Pravrttim ca nivrttim ca... That is modern civilization. They do not know. What is our duty to do and what is our duty not to do -- they do not know. Neither any education, in this life what we should do, what we should not do. So therefore this particular word is mentioned here, manisinam. In human society, those who are specifically intelligent, for them, Caitanya-caritamrta karaca, he says, krsna yei bhaje sei bada catura. Catura means very intelligent. Without being intelligent, nobody can take to Krsna consciousness. But our propaganda is to educate people to become intelligent. They are foolish. They do not know the value of life. They do not know what is going to happen after death. No. Just like cats and dogs.

Therefore Upanisad says, Gargopanisad, etad viditva yah prayati sa brahmanah. "One who leaves this body after knowing everything, he is brahmana." And etad aviditva yah prayati sa krpanah. "And anyone who dies without knowing the value of life, he's krpana, miser, cripple-minded." Because he could not utilize the opportunity given to him by nature. Such nice beautiful body, you American boys and girls -- nice country, good facilities, no poverty -- everything is very nicely given to you. But, if in spite of all these facilities, if you don't take to Krsna consciousness, then you are krpana, miser. "Miser" means one who has got money, but he cannot utilize it. He is miser. And one who knows how to utilize money... There are many merchants. They get a few thousands of dollars from their father, but due to intelligence he increases to millions of dollars. That is intelligence. And miser, or foolishness, is that "I get some money from my father, but I spend it for nothing." So this human form of life is specially meant for becoming brahmana.

We are therefore creating brahmanas. We are not creating sudras. Sudras are already there. Janmana jayate sudrah. Anyone born is a sudra. Sudra means who has no knowledge, ignorant. He is called sudra. Paricaryatmakam karyam sudra-karma svabhava-jam. Sudra is not intelligent. He cannot do anything nice, thoughtful. "Ehh, get some work, get some few dollars daily. Eat and sleep." That is sudra. They cannot do anything independent.

A brahmana will not accept anyone's service. That is especially forbidden, that a brahmana. . . Brahmana, even if he is in difficulty, he should not accept anyone's service like a dog. Especially this word is used. A dog cannot live without master. A dog, if he hasn't got a good master is a street dog. He may be killed at any time. He has no protection. Therefore this very word is used. Sudra means dog. He must have a master, otherwise he cannot live. So there are classes of men, sudras. No, they must have a protection. Women must have protection, because they cannot do anything independently. To give them independence means to create some trouble. In the Manu-samhita it is clearly said, na stri svatantryam arhati. Woman cannot be given independence. No. They must be protected. When they are child, up to twelve years, thirteen years, say, fifteen, sixteen years, not more than that, she must be protected by the father. And at the age of thirteen to sixteen years, she must be married. Find out some boy who can take charge, the second charge. And when she's old, the charge is given to the elderly sons. So woman is protected like that.

So sudras also should not be given independence. They should be given protection, but no independence. Striyah sudras tatha vaisyah. In the Bhagavad-gita there is. Striyah means woman, sudra, and vaisya -- they are put into the same category. In Bhagavata also, stri-sudra-dvija-bandhunam trayi na sruti-gocara. So one has to be enlightened. As the sudra can be enlightened under good protection, similarly, a woman can also be enlightened.

There is no, I mean to say "barricade" to enlighten woman. Everyone can be enlightened. Everyone has got the light. But ordinarily the sudra and the vaisyas, they are not to be considered very intelligent. Janmana jayate sudrah. Everyone is born sudra. Samskarad bhaved dvijah. By samskara... Just like we follow. Not all of a sudden we accept anyone as brahmana. We give samskara, chanting. First of all, association. Satam prasangan mama virya-samvidah. By good association, by the association of devotees, one can understand automatically what is God, what is Krsna. (aside:) Let him sit properly. So samskara... Samskara... Although the sudras are not given any samskara...Because those who are in the very lowest stage of life, it is very difficult for them to accept samskara, reformatory method. But this Krsna consciousness movement, under the direction of Gosvamis and pancaratra system, they are giving the opportunity everyone to become a brahmana.

Because without becoming brahmana, nobody can understand what is Krsna or what is Krsna consciousness. One must be on the platform of goodness. When one is fixed up on the platform of goodness, the other two qualities -- namely, ignorance and passion -- cannot disturb him. Nityam bhagavata-sevaya. Nasta-prayesv abhadresu nityam bhagavata-sevaya [SB 1.2.18].

srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah
punya-sravana-kirtanah
hrdy antah-stho hy abhadrani
vidhunoti suhrt satam
 [SB 1.2.17]

Hrdy antah-sthah. Krsna is within your heart. If you kindly continue to hear about Him, as you are doing, then Krsna will be very much pleased, "Oh, this person is now interested in me." Because nobody's interested in Krsna. So Krsna is also silent to them. But as soon as you become interested, oh, Krsna becomes very active, "Oh, he's trying to do something. I shall help him." In the Bhagavad-gita it is said, tesam satata-yuktanam [Bg. 10.10]. Tesam nityabhiyuktanam. What is that verse? Tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam, buddhi-yogam dadami tam. Krsna says. He's silent for the nondevotees, but he speaks to the devotees. That is very natural. If some big man... He talks with men who are intelligent, who is businesslike. Why he wastes his time talking with some rascals and fools? So Krsna talk, but talks to the devotee. Who are devotee? Satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam. Those who are 24-hours engaged in rendering loving devotional service to the Lord. To such person Krsna gives intelligence, not others.

So this process of hearing from Srimad-Bhagavatam, Bhagavad-gita, must be continued. That is our life. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh [SB 7.5.23]. Sravanam means hearing. Kirtanam means chanting about Lord Visnu. Not for others. "Now I am hearing and chanting about Nixon." (chuckles) That will not help. Because everyone is busy in newspaper, "What Nixon said, what he is doing..." Everywhere. The politicians, they have made the minds of general people, general public, that they're very much interested what the politician says. Every day he says that he's simply speaking all nonsense; still, he's interested. Punah punas carvita-carvananam [SB 7.5.30]. They are called, "chewing the chewed again and again."

matir na krsne paratah svato
va mitho 'bhipadyeta grha-vratanam.
na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum
durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah
andha yathandhair upaniyamanas
te 'pisa-tantryam uru-damni baddhah
 [SB 7.5.31]

Isa-tantryam, by the laws of material nature, one who is bound up tight, hands and legs... we are all. We cannot, I mean to say, neglect the laws of nature. If you eat little more, then you have to fast for three days. That we actually know. If you expose little to cold, then you have to pay ten dollars to the doctor fine. So they are so much bound up by the laws of nature; still, they are thinking, "I am free. I am independent. Where is God? I am God." Just see. Such foolish persons, that every moment he's being kicked on his face by the boot of material nature, and still he's saying, "I am God, I am independent."

You see? So andha yathandhair upaniyamanah. Just like one blind man is speaking other blind men, "Please follow me. I shall lead you to the right path." "But you are blind yourself, and we are also blind. What will be the help?" But no, they will follow. In our country, Gandhi promised that "I shall give you independence in one year, if you follow me -- non-violence, non-cooperation." People followed, but it took thirty years. But actually, that is not independence. So these politicians, especially, they mislead us. Not only politicians, the so-called yogis, so-called... So many things. Real leader is Krsna. So if we surrender to Krsna as Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66], "Give up all other occupation, duties. Simply just surrender unto Me." Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah. "Don't hesitate. Do it." Krsna is personally canvassing. He's so kind. He comes personally. He speaks the whole truth in the Bhagavad-gita.

He's canvassing, "Please do it." He again comes as a devotee, Lord Caitanya. Lord Caitanya is teaching how to surrender to Krsna. There is no difference between Lord Caitanya's teachings and Krsna's teaching. The same thing. In one form, Krsna is saying that "You surrender unto Me." And Lord Caitanya says that "You surrender to Krsna." The fact is the same. So we are following Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. We are canvassing, "Please surrender to Krsna." So our business is not very difficult. If we follow ourselves, if we surrender to Krsna fully and teach others also the same thing... Not that something adulteration. No. Exactly what Krsna says. Then you become spiritual master, guru. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says,

yare dekha tare kaha ‘krsna'-upadesa
amara ajnaya guru hana tara' ei desa
 [Cc. Madhya 7.128]

"Under My order, you become a spiritual master and deliver the people of your country." And what is that order? That yare dekha tare kaha krsna-upadesa [Cc. Madhya 7.128]. "Whomever you meet, you simply speak what Krsna has said, or what is spoken about Krsna."

That is Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. So every one of you follow the instruction, as you have received. Chant sixteen rounds regularly, without fail, and follow the regulative principles, and hear about Krsna, and preach about Krsna. Every one of you become a spiritual master. Simple thing. No education required. Because we are hearing about Krsna, so we can speak the same thing. What is the difficulty? If I hear from my spiritual master or from any learned man that "Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead," so if I say by hearing that "Krsna is Supreme Personality of Godhead," so I haven't got to search out whether Krsna is Personality of Godhead or not, but if I accept the authority, then I speak the real truth. This is our Krsna consciousness movement. Therefore sometimes, when people say in India, "Swamiji, you have done wonderful." And yes, I do not know. I'm not a magician. But, so far I am confident that I did not adulterate the words of Krsna.

That's all. That's my credit. I did not like to take the position of Krsna. I remained a servant of Krsna, and I spoke what Krsna said. That's all. This is my secret. So everyone can do that. There is nothing magic. The magic will act as soon as you become a pure devotee of Krsna. The magic will be done by Krsna, not by me or you. He will do it. Just like a small child. Nobody can hurt him. The father will take care. He does not know. He's simply depending on father. "My father, mother." That's all. Krsna says that "You surrender unto Me, I give you protection." He's not a liar. He's not inefficient. He's strong. He's sufficiently opulent. He can do that. So believe in Krsna's word and surrender unto Him, and don't spoil this human form of life. Death is sure. Before death, we must prepare to go back to home, back to Godhead. Thank you very much. (end)

Srimad-Bhagavatam Lecture -- Melbourne, May 19, 1975

19 May 75 , Melbourne

(end)
