Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupadaSrila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: (prema-dhvani) Thank you very much.

Sri bhagavan uvaca

asocyan anvasocas tvam
prajna-vadams ca bhasase
gatasun agatasums ca
nanusocanti panditah
 [Bg. 2.11]

Our this Krsna consciousness movement, it is not something new, imaginary movement. It is very old movement. At least five thousand years ago this Bhagavad-gita was repeated by Lord Krsna in the Battlefield of Kuruksetra. Before that, as it is stated in the Bhagavad-gita, Fourth Chapter,

imam vivasvate yogam
proktavan aham avyayam
vivasvan manave praha
manur iksvakave 'bravit
 [Bg. 4.1]

Krsna said to Arjuna that "This science of understanding God, long, long ago I spoke to the sun-god Vivasvan." In the Vedic scripture we understand that every planet is inhabited by living entities. The sun is also one of the planets, and there are living entities. Otherwise how Krsna could go there and speak the predominating person, Vivasvan? The name of the person is also given, imam vivasvate yogam proktavan aham avyayam [Bg. 4.1]. And vivasvan manave praha. Vivasvan, the sun-god... Because in the higher planetary system the sun planet, moon planet, and many, many other planets, they are called the heavenly planets. The inhabitants of those planets are very opulent. The material happiness available in those planets are hundreds and thousand times better than in this planet. So it is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita that sun planet is also inhabited by living beings. But their body is made of fire. That is the difference. Just like here our body is made of earth. Earth, air... Earth, water, air, fire, ether -- these are the five material elements. In some planet the earth is prominent; in some planet the water is prominent; in other planet the fire is prominent. So this is the creation of God, different varieties. That is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita:

athava bahunaitena
kim jnatena tavarjuna
vistabhyaham idam krtsnam
ekamsena sthito jagat
 [Bg. 10.42]

This material world, composed of many millions of universes, that is one-fourth creation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Ekamsena sthito jagat.

So Bhagavad-gita means to understand what is God, the science of God. And God Himself is speaking about Himself. Otherwise it is not possible to understand what is God. So if we carefully understand the slokas and the passages mentioned in the Bhagavad-gita, we can understand what is God. And the human form of life is meant for understanding God. He has no other business. In the lower bodies, less than human form of body... According to Darwin's theory, the human form of body comes from monkey. But the evolution is accepted in the Vedic literature but not like Darwin's. The evolution, again according to Vedic scripture, is that the living entity is different from the body, and the living entity is passing through many forms of body. We shall read that. So the bodies are according to my desire. I am desiring something. Just like here we are sitting, so many ladies and gentlemen, but not one of them is similar to anyone else. They have got different bodies. That body is created according to one's desire. The mind, the subtle mind, is the creator of the next body. Yam yam vapi smaran bhavam tyajaty ante kalevaram [Bg. 8.6]. At the time of death whatever I am thinking, a similar body will be offered to me by the laws of nature. Subtle body. The mind, intelligence and ego, they are subtle body, and the gross body is made of earth, water, air, fire, ether. So when we give up this gross body, the subtle body carries me to another gross body. This is the way of transmigration of the soul. The prakrti, nature, nature's law, is very strict and stringent. The nature will immediately offer you a similar body according to the thinking at the time of your death. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13].

Therefore this human form of body is meant for going back to home, back to Godhead. Yad gatva na nivartante tad dhama paramam mama [Bg. 15.6]. We are eternal. As God is eternal, we are also eternal because we are part and parcel of God. As God is always blissful, jolly, similarly our nature is always blissful and jolly. Sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah [Bs. 5.1]. Sat, cit, ananda. Sat means eternal, and cit means blissful, cit means full of knowledge; and ananda. Ananda means blissfulness. That is our nature. Therefore we want to live. We do not wish to die. We do not wish... Nobody wishes to die, but we are forced to die. That is our punishment. Nityah sasvato 'yam na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. This instruction you will get in the Bhagavad-gita, that "The living entity is eternal," sasvata, "very, very old." Nityah sasvato 'yam na hanyate hanyamane sarire: [Bg. 2.20] "When the body is destroyed, is annihilated, the soul exists. It goes to another body." The example is just like every one of us... In the first day of intercourse of the father-mother, the secretion mix together, emulsified, and if the living entity is allowed to enter into that, it grows. That is the beginning of our body. But if the living entity is not allowed into the, that emulsified, small pealike form, then there is no pregnancy. So attempt is made to pollute that emulsification. Therefore the living entity cannot enter into it and there is no pregnancy. Otherwise there must be pregnancy. Then that pealike body grows, and in seven months it grows the hands and legs and head and everything, and consciousness comes back. When we die our consciousness becomes almost stopped, and we then lie down within the womb of the mother according to species of body, a status -- take it for granted our human form of body -- seven months. At that time body is grown up. In this way, in tenth month the body is fully grown. Then by nature's way the body comes out and another life begins. This is called transmigration of the soul.

So actually we are eternal. In the Vedic language it is said, nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). Nitya. Nitya means eternal. And nityanam. Nityanam means plural number of nityas. So there are many nityas, means many living entities, but there is one nitya Supreme. That is God. He is also a living entity like us. Then where is the difference? The difference is, we learn from the Vedic line, eko bahunam vidadhati kaman: "That singular number nitya, eternal, maintains the plural number nityas." We are within the plural number, nityanam. So conclusion is that God is the Supreme Being and we are living being. So our relation is very intimate. Qualitatively we are one because we are part and parcel. So God is eternal, full of knowledge, and blissful; therefore our position is also the same but in minute quantity. His knowledge is great. Therefore God is great. Our knowledge is limited. And because we have got limited potencies, therefore we are called living entities. And God has got unlimited potencies, therefore God is great and we are small. This is conclusion of the Bhagavad-gita. And we are in this material world being contaminated by the material nature. We are suffering because anything material, it has got limited period of existence. Anything you take, it is asat. Asat means "which will not exist," and sat means "which will exist." The Vedic injunction is asato ma sad gama: "You are sat. You revive your eternal life. Don't be entangled in this asat."

So we are transmigrating from one body to another. There is evolution.

jalaja nava-laksani
sthavara laksa-vimsati
krmayo rudra-sankhyakah
paksinam dasa-laksanam

Because in the beginning the whole planet was covered in water. The water is drying up and gradually land is coming out. So therefore in the beginning the aquatics, jalaja nava-laksani. So the aquatic animals, they are 900,000 species. Jalaja nava..., sthavara laksa-vimsati. Then trees and plants and herbs and grasses and so many, they are 2,000,000 forms. Then krmayo rudra-sankhyakah. Then insect life, reptile life, 1,100,000. Then paksinam dasa-laksanam, then birds, varieties of birds, 1,000,000. Then pasu, four-legged animals, 3,000,000 types. Then manusah catur-laksani. Then human form of life, uncivilized and civilized, that human form of life 400,000. So in comparison to the lower species of life, we are very small quantity. Together there are 8,400,000 species of life, living entities. The evolution process is from one body to another, another, another. In this way, when you come to the human form of life, it should be utilized for full knowledge about our eternal life. That is the opportunity. And if we don't take this opportunity, if we live like other animals -- eating, sleeping, sex, and fearfulness, ahara-nidra-bhayam -- but we do not care to understand what we are, what is God, what is our relationship with God, then we are missing the point.

That lesson, instruction, is given in the Bhagavad-gita. And it is very easy to understand. The perplexity which Arjuna met at the Battle, in the Battlefield of Kuruksetra... The fight was between two sector of family members. They're cousin-brothers, one family, but there was some trouble, who would occupy the throne. From Mahabharata we understand that the Pandavas, at least up to Maharaja Pariksit, he ruled over the whole world. Bharatavarsa means the whole world, and the capital was here, Hastinapura. This information we get, Mahabharata. Maha means greater, and bharata means India. Mahabharata. So there was trouble, who will occupy the throne. So there was fight. So when fight was arranged, then Arjuna... He was a devotee of Krsna. (aside to someone talking:) Please stop. He declined fight. He said to Krsna, "My dear Krsna" -- Krsna was his friend -- "I don't like this fight because they are my cousin-brothers. Although they have usurped my kingdom, let them enjoy it. I don't wish to fight with them." But Krsna declined. Krsna said, "No, you have to fight. Your duty is to fight." Then Arjuna placed before Him so many ideas that "If I kill my brother, then my brothers' wives will be widow and they may be polluted, then unwanted children, varna-sankara, will come out, and when the varna-sankara population is filling, then the whole world becomes a hell." So many arguments. So Krsna, when He saw that Arjuna is very much afflicted with the material ideas, so He wanted to teach him this Bhagavad-gita. So first punishment... Not punishment, chastisement. Because Arjuna accepted that "The perplexities which I am facing is not possible to be solved except Yourself." He knew that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So he surrendered himself to Krsna, sisyas te 'ham sadhi mam prapannam, karpanya-dosopahata svabhavah: [Bg. 2.7] "I am a ksatriya. It is my duty to fight in right cases, and I am declining. This is my weakness. So kindly instruct me how I can give up this weakness. I am accepting You as my guru." Sisyas te 'ham. Sisya means who voluntarily accepts to be ruled by a person who is guru. He is called sisya.
So Arjuna and Krsna, they were friends, but still, to take right instruction without any argument, he accepted He is guru. Then after the acceptance Krsna's first warning is,

asocyan anvasocas tvam
prajna-vadams ca bhasase
gatasun agatasums ca
nanusocanti panditah
 [Bg. 2.11]

"My dear Arjuna, you are talking like a very learned man, but the subject matter which you have touched is not at all taken seriously by the pandita." Pandita means learned man. That means, "You are talking like a fool. You are taking this body as self." So actually this is not the fact. The body is not the self. The self is different. If you analyze this body, what you will find? Suppose we are breathing. What is this breathing? It is air only. Now, when the breathing is stopped, a man is dead. Now, you are so much advanced in science. Why don't you replace this breathing? It is nothing but air. So you can manufacture some machine working in electric battery and put some air and fix up, and that same air will come: "Woosh, woosh, woosh, woosh. "Will that give you life? No. Even if you artificially bring breathing, just like nowadays they, with oxygen gas, as if oxygen gas is life... That is not the fact. So if you analyze every part of the body, then you will find that there is no life. This is called education. This is called scientific knowledge. Simply abruptly taking something without any proper understanding, that is not knowledge. Therefore Krsna chastised him that "You are talking like very scientific, learned scholar, but you are a fool number one because you are accepting this material body as the self." This is ignorance. This is confirmed in another place, yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke [SB 10.84.13]. This kunape, this bag of three elements, kapha pitta vayu, or, take it, the skin, muscle, veins, bones, urine, stool, blood -- what you will find if you dissect this body? They are all material things. What is blood? It is also water, red water. The urine, this is also water. And this bone, bone is nothing but earth hardened. If you take plaster of Paris... They sometimes show artificial bone also in the medical college. But that is not. That is bone. That is earth. So do you think this combination of this earth, water, air, fire, is life? Can you produce life? You take... You can get enough earth, water, air, pus, stool, urine, blood. You manufacture one life. That you cannot do. This is called analysis. And those who are engaged in understanding the self as the combination of these earth, water, air, fire -- sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. Such persons are defined in the sastra as no more intelligent than the cows and the asses. So from here spiritual knowledge begins. You analyze the body, but you won't find the real soul or real life, although it is within you. But why you cannot find? It is very, very small. Kesagra-sata-bhagasya satadha kalpitasya ca [Cc. Madhya 19.140]. The formation of the soul, measurement of the soul, is very, very... It is smaller than the atom. Kesagra-sata-bhagasya [Cc. Madhya 19.140]. The tip of the hair you divide into hundred part, and take one part. Again divide it into hundred parts. That one part is the measurement of the soul. That means one ten thousandth part of the top of the hair. So how you can see? But that small particle is giving you living force. This knowledge we get from Bhagavad-gita, and that is the fact. You cannot get life by analyzing this material body. That is not possible. You have to find out what is that small particle. You have to hear. Therefore you cannot get knowledge by your material activities. You have to hear it from the authorities; otherwise there is no possibility. Just like you cannot understand who is your father. You have to take the knowledge from your mother. If mother certifies, "This gentleman is your father," that is correct. But if you go on researching who is your father you will never be able to know who is your father. Similarly, what is life, what is soul, what is our, this body, what is the ultimate goal of life, why you are suffering -- all this knowledge you have to take from the higher authorities. That is called Vedic process, not to endeavor by research. What you can research? Our fund of knowledge is very, very poor, limited. You cannot have perfect knowledge unless you hear from the authority. So Krsna is the authority. Our Krsna consciousness movement means you take knowledge from the best authority. Don't manufacture knowledge. That will not help you. That is Krsna consciousness movement.

So here Krsna says that "My dear Arjuna, you are talking like a very learned man." That is our disease. Everyone will talk as if... We manufacture, but that is useless. Ke ami kene amaya jare... You cannot make any solution. Therefore the whole world is in chaotic condition. We speak of our own country, India. Not only India, everywhere the chaotic condition is because they have no real knowledge. They are simply claiming to be very learned man, which is chastised here by Krsna. Asocyan anvasocas tvam prajna-vadan: [Bg. 2.11] "You are presenting yourself as very learned man, but the subject matter which you have taken, this body, this body is nothing but dead lump of matter." That is said here, that asocyan anvasocas tvam gatasun agatasums ca. This body, when it is living condition... Living condition means so long the soul is there, it looks like very bright, beautiful, moving here and there. And when the soul leaves this body, then what it is? It has no value, a lump of matter. Just like a motorcar. So long it is moving, it is worth one lakh, and so long it does not move, it is simply lump of iron and copper and something. Who cares for it? It is thrown away. Same thing. The body has no value. It has value so long the soul is there. Otherwise suppose a big man... They are lamenting such, "A great man has passed away." But what is that such great man? He is lying on the floor, on the bed, the same man. So why you are seeing that he has gone? Then who has gone? You have never seen him who has gone. This is knowledge. So our human life is meant for understanding what has gone from the body which makes the body a lump of matter... [break]

Dvapare paricaryayam kalau tad dhari-kirtanat. In the Satya-yuga, when the duration of life was very, very great, meditation was possible. And next yuga? Krte yad dhyayato visnum tretayam yajato makhaih. By performing the ritualistic ceremonies recommended in the Vedas, yajna... And the next yuga, by paricarya, by Deity worship. And next yuga, this Kali-yuga, hari-kirtanat, simply by chanting the holy name of the Lord. Otherwise... And meditation means krte yad dhyayato visnum. Meditation means to think of Visnu, Lord Visnu. That is the recommendation. Dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa pasyanti yam yoginah [SB 12.13.1]. The yogis, they think of the Supreme Person, dhyanavasthita manasa, mind absorbed, surcharged with thinking of Visnu. That is called meditation. Dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa pasyanti yam yoginah [SB 12.13.1]. And in the Bhagavad-gita this dhyana is recommended in the sixth chapter:

yoginam api sarvesam
mad-gatenantar-atmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah
 [Bg. 6.47]

Any yogi... There are different varieties of yogis. So of all the yogis, the bhakti-yogi who is thinking of Krsna within the mind, he is the first-class yogi. So in our movement we are creating first-class yogis because they are chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. So this is directly to create first-class yogis. Yoginam api sarvesam.

Indian: Swamiji, in our ancient books Krsna has also been projected as a person who has lived for a certain period of history, and who was associated with number of...

Prabhupada: Friends and relatives.

Indian: ...relatives for temporary time. Our books of literature also projected the Supreme Being as the perfect one. How do you reconcile the two things? How do we accept that... Your teachings are based on the assumption that that person who lived for that period of time is the perfect person. But how do you fundamentally assure that what He has said is correct? How do you reconcile the two points?

Prabhupada: That I have already explained, that one has to understand Krsna. Janma karma me divyam yo janati tattvatah. Before your asking, I have already explained that if that person, Krsna, whom you think that He lived for a certain period with friends and relatives just like ordinary man, if you simply study what is this person, then you'll be comforted (competent?). Janma karma ca me divyam yo janati tattvatah [Bg. 4.9]. To understand Him in fact, it is not so easily. That is also explained in the Bhagavad-gita:

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
 kascin mam vetti tattvatah
 [Bg. 7.3]

Out of many millions of persons, one becomes siddha, perfect. So that perfection is not complete perfection. That perfection means aham brahmasmi: "I am not this material body; I am spirit soul." So one who understands this position of oneself is calculated as perfect, but yatatam api siddhanam [Bg. 7.3], in that perfect stage if one endeavors to understand Krsna, yatatam api siddhanam kascid, out of many such millions of persons who trying to understand Krsna in perfection, one may understand. So it is not so easy. Janma karma ca me divyam yo jana... [Bg. 4.9], again tattvatah. That factual understanding is possible. How it is possible? Bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah [Bg. 18.55]. Only through devotion you can understand. So these problems will be solved when you become a devotee. Then Krsna will reveal. Atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih [Brs. 1.2.234]. If you try to understand that Supreme Person Krsna, who comes before you as ordinary person, you can understand Him if you become His devotee. Otherwise it is not possible. Atah sri-krsna-namadi. You cannot understand Krsna or His name, His form, His pastimes, His activities -- na bhaved grahyam indriyaih -- by your imperfect senses. But sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva sphurati. When you are engaged in His service, then He reveals Himself: "Here I am." So this is the process. If you want to understand that person, Krsna, who is accepted as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then you have to take shelter of bhakti-yoga and associate with bhaktas. Then it is possible. Otherwise not.

Indian (2): Pranamas, Swamiji.

Prabhupada: Hare Krsna.

Indian (2): Shri Gandhiji was also great admirer of the Gita and a great scholar and a great..., made commentary also. But he at the time of the great war asked the great powers to let Hitler come in and not fight him at all. But where have you... He said that Hitler change of heart that would be effective and not that punishment. That means punishment is a fault, and I would like your enlightenment on this paradox.

Prabhupada: The punishment... Krsna does not personally punish. He has got many agents. Just like in the government, the president does not punish directly, but there are many departments. Similarly, parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport]. His potencies are manyfold. One of the potency is this material nature. It is called maya. That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita. Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14]. It is very difficult to surpass the jurisdiction of maya, duratyaya. But punishment will not be excused. Ignorance of law is no excuse. Similarly, this maya, this material nature, is very, very strong. If you eat little more... Your nature is to eat, say, two ounce. If you eat three ounce immediately you'll be punished. There will be indigestion. The nature is so strong. Therefore it is called daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya. So in this way you cannot surpass the stringent laws of maya, but if you want to avoid punishment, then you take shelter of Krsna. Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14]. Therefore Krsna consciousness is essential. If we become Krsna conscious, if we follow the instruction of Krsna, then there is no question of being harassed by the stringent laws of maya. This is the version.

Indian (3): President Jagadish, it is customary... (end)

Become A Guru, not a God

Caitanya Caritamrta Adi 1.1
Mayapur, March 25, 1975

download  flash player

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada:

vande gurun isa-bhaktan
isam isavatarakan
tat-prakasams ca tac-chaktih
krsna-caitanya-samjnakam
 [Cc. Adi 1.1]

Krsna Caitanya is Krsna. That was observed by Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya. He composed one hundred verses praising the glories of Lord Caitanya, but because Caitanya Mahaprabhu was playing the part of a devotee, He threw away the slokas, because "This is not for Me." That was Caitanya Mahaprabhu's humbleness. But the devotees know that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna Himself. Sri-krsna-caitanya radha-krsna nahe anya. Radha-Krsna combination of Sri Caitanya... Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu means Radha and Krsna combined. In the beginning there is Krsna, and then Krsna divided into two, Radha and Krsna. And then again combined, that is Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

radha-krsna-pranaya-vikrtir hladini saktir asmad
ekatmanav api (bhuvi pura) deha-bhedam gatau tau
caitanyakhyam prakatam adhuna tad-dvayam caikyam aptam...
 [Cc. Adi 1.5]

So the Gosvami's siddhanta, that Krsna is one. There is no rivalry with Krsna. God is one. Eka-brahma dvitiya nasti. There cannot be many Gods. So when God, Krsna, wants to enjoy His pleasure potency, that is Radharani. So He manifests Himself, manifests His energy... His energy and He, there is no difference. Sakti-saktimator abhedah. The sastra says sakti and the saktimat -- means one who possesses the sakti (sakti means power, potency) -- they are equal. There is no difference. Just like the sun. Sun is the powerful, and the sunshine is the power. So there is heat in the sun and there is heat also in the sunshine. There is light in the sun and there is light in the sunshine also. Therefore qualitatively they are one so far heat and light is concerned. But the temperature of the sun and the temperature of the sunshine may be different. May be not. Actually there is difference. This is the basic principle of all philosophies. Acintya-bhedabheda. Acintya means inconceivable, bheda means different, and abheda means nondifferent. The whole situation... The one is there, God, but He has expanded Himself in different way. Eko bahu syam.

So that is described here. Krsna-caitanya-samjnakam. Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He has expanded Himself as gurun. The guru, the spiritual master, he's also Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Saksad-dharitvena samasta-sastrair uktah **. In all the sastras, guru is accepted as Krsna. Saksad-dharitvena. Saksad means directly. Just like you offer your devotion, respects, to guru. So that respect is offered to Krsna. Guru also does not think himself that he is Krsna, but he collects the devotional services of the disciples to offer to Krsna. This is the process. We cannot approach Krsna directly. We should approach through guru. Tasmad gurum prapadyeta jijnasuh sreya uttamam [SB 11.3.21]. That is the injunction of the sastra, that one should approach the guru who can transfer the service from the disciple to the Supreme Person. So... Therefore the first offering is guru, vande gurun. Then guru creates many devotees. Guru's business is to canvass on behalf of Supreme Lord. That is guru's business. Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66], so, "You give up all material, engage..." Sarva-dharman means in the material world we have created so many so-called duties. This is our material disease. People are interested in material engagements and they have created different varieties of engagements. Sociology, communism, and this "ism," that "ism," philanthropism, altruism, internationalism, nationalism -- many, many duties they have created. That is all material. Krsna, out of His causeless mercy... (children crying) Stop that children. Out of His causeless mercy, He comes, He descends. Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata [Bg. 4.7]. Glanir, this is glanir. Human life is meant for one thing, athato brahma jijnasa, to inquire about the Supreme Absolute Truth. But instead of doing that, they have created so many "isms." That is their misfortune.

Real business is athato brahma jijnasa. This human life, nature, gives us the opportunity to inquire about the Absolute Truth. We have got the intelligence. The cats and dogs, they have no intelligence to inquire about the Absolute Truth. The trees, the plants, the aquatics, the animals, the beasts, the uncivilized man -- so many, 8,400,000 forms and species of life. Out of that, the civilized men, the Aryans... Arya. Arya means the person who has got godly qualification. This is the meaning of Aryan. Aryan, advanced. Aryan does not mean godless society. They are non-Aryans. Real Aryan means... Because we are part and parcel of God, naturally we have got, in minute quantity, the qualities of God. That is natural. But on account of our material association, those qualifications are covered now by upadhi, by various designations. This is our material disease. Material disease means... Just like a gold is covered by dirty, dirty things. Similarly, we are actually gold, because part and parcel of Krsna. We are a small Krsna, very small, but we are also the same quality. But it is covered. This is our disease. And these coverings are going on in different names -- socialism, communism, and this "ism" -- so many. "I am Indian," "I am American," "I am Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am white," "I am black" -- these are all designations.

So it is the business of the guru to clear up these designations, dirty things. Therefore, vande gurun isam. Guru, first offering because he is the agent of Krsna. Krsna said that "You give up all these designative dharma; take to real dharma." Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam [Bg. 18.66]. "That is your real business." But even Krsna... Krsna does not fail... But Krsna does not force. So even upon the request of Krsna we do not give up our designation. This is the difficulty. Krsna said, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja, and nobody practically, except the Pandavas and few other devotees, nobody took it seriously. And what to speak of now. They are talking of Bhagavad-gita, scholars of Bhagavad-gita, but without Krsna. That is their business. These demons, they are preaching Bhagavad-gita without Krsna. Nobody preaches about Krsna. Nobody says what Krsna wants. Sarva-dharman parityajya. Krsna wants this, but they are misinterpreting in different ways and diverting the attention of the people most foolishly, that... In the Bhagavad-gita Krsna is the center. So this is going on. You know, you are coming all from foreign countries. Bhagavad-gita is popular in your country, at least amongst the scholars and theosophists and theologists. Going on, for the last two hundred years at least. But nobody understood Krsna. That is the difference. Now for the last, say, five or ten years, because we are presenting Krsna as it is, it has become very easy for you to accept it. Unadulterated Krsna. Before this, everything was presented adulterated. Therefore there was no effect.

So if you push on this movement, unadulterated Krsna, it will go on. It will go on. And as soon as you adulterate Krsna, it will not go on. It will not be effective. You may be very good scholar or very good politician or this or that, but you'll never understand what is Krsna. Naham prakasah sarvasya yoga-maya-samavrtah [Bg. 7.25]. If you want to pollute Krsna, Krsna will never be revealed to you. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva sphuraty adah [Brs. 1.2.234]. So by the grace of Krsna you have taken the shelter of the lotus feet of Krsna. It is great fortune for you. So do not adulterate Krsna. That is my request. Try to understand Krsna. And to understand Krsna, the Krsna Himself taught... That was also difficult. Then Krsna as Krsna Caitanya (is) teaching us how to approach Krsna. That is Caitanya-caritamrta. Caitanya means spiritual, living, and carita means character. So Caitanya-caritamrta means that the supreme living force, Krsna. The living force is Krsna. Therefore we contradict the so-called scientific theory that life has come from chemicals, matter. No. We are trying our best. We have engaged our scientist students. They have already..., one student has already written one small book, The Scientific Basis of Krsna Consciousness, and we are going to publish another book. I have given instruction to the scientist students. What is the heading of that?

Devotees: Life Comes From Life.

Prabhupada: Yes, Life Comes From Life. That is the fact. These modern so-called scientific theory that life comes from matter, that is not fact. Because our original person, Krsna, said, aham sarvasya prabhavo [Bg. 10.8]. Aham, this aham word is applicable to a person, person. And person means living force. So Caitanya-caritamrta means that living force is a person, and His caritra, His characteristic, this is Caitanya. And that is amrta. Amrta means not dead matter. Mrta means dead, and amrta means not dead, living force. So he is living force; his characteristics are also living force; and they are, because living force, they are amrta. Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. We have got experience what is living force and what is dead matter. That we have got experience. And that is further explained by Krsna, that living force means na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20], na jayate na mriyate kadacit. That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita, that living force is not finished even after the annihilation of this body. Very nice statement by Krsna. We can understand living... In the life, when we are alive, the body is moving, we can understand what is living force. And we can understand further when the body does not move -- that difference, why the body was moving and why the body is not now moving. If we simply study this difference of position we can understand what is living force. It is not very difficult. Simply we have to understand, "Now this living force is gone out of this body; therefore the body is no longer moving and it is a dead matter." This is this... So this Caitanya-caritamrta means we are talking of the living force, not of the dead matter. We should always remember. So the guru belongs to that living force. And Isa, Isa means controller. So everyone, that living force. Gurun, isa, isa-bhaktan, isa-bhaktan and isam. So they are all living force. The Lord, His devotee, His representative, everyone, they belong to the spiritual platform, living force. Caitanya-samjnakam. Caitanya means living. That personification of all living forces is Krsna Caitanya, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. People mistake Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu because by misfortune they understand Krsna Caitanya as a devotee or just like so-called sadhu or yogi, like that. That is mistake. Krsna Caitanya means the original living force, Krsna.

So Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, he understood Him. Srila Rupa Gosvami, he understood Him. Similarly, the followers of Rupa Gosvami, Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, and all the Gosvamis, they will understand Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And one who understands or follows the path enunciated by Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, for them Krsna is very easily obtained. This is called Caitanya-caritamrta. If you follow Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu... Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is described by Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, sri-krsna-caitanya-sarira-dhari. Purana-purusah, I just now forget the verse. Yes:

vairagya-vidya-nija-bhakti-yoga-
siksartham ekah purusah puranah
sri-krsna-caitanya-sarira-dhari
krpambudhir yas tam aham prapadye
 [Cc. Madhya 6.254]

So Sri Krsna Caitanya is the same Krsna, Purana-purusah. Adyam Purana-purusah. Purana-purusa means Krsna, the original Personality of Godhead, very old. Purana means very old. So, vairagya-vidya-siksartham. Because we are suffering here on account of so many designations, so Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to purify us from all these nonsense designations. That is called vairagya-vidya. Raga means attachment. So... And viraga. This false attachment we have to give up. That is practically being manifested by practical life, how to love Krsna, how to approach Him. That is the characteristic of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And therefore He is described in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, Eleventh Canto, krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam [SB 11.5.32]. Krsna-varnam: He belongs to the same category, Krsna. Or He is describing Krsna always. His only business is to describe Krsna. But His complexion is not Krsna, akrsna. Akrsna. Akrsna means white. Because Krsna had many colors. One of the colors was pita, golden, golden avatara. So, tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam. This sangopangastra-parsadam is described here, that gurun, isam, isa-bhaktan, isavatarakan tat-prakasams ca tat-chaktih. This is sangopanga.

So study this Caitanya-caritamrta. Now we have got this English edition, very elaborately described, following the footsteps of our Guru Maharaja, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada. So there is no such edition of Caitanya-caritamrta, very elaborately described. But it can be understood by the advanced student. It can be... And so... Advanced, you can, anyone, you can become advanced. Advanced means at least one should understand that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. If you simply understand these two words, that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then you are advanced. It is not very difficult. Everything, all Vedic literature, they are meant for understanding Krsna. Vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyam [Bg. 15.15]. So if you simply understand... What is that understanding? That Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. We have written in our Krsna book, "Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead." If you become convinced, then your study of Vedas -- finished. Tepus tapas te sasnur arya [SB 3.33.7]. Anyone who understands Krsna... What is that understanding? Krsna says, mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya: [Bg. 7.7] "My dear Arjuna, there is no more superior authority or person or truth than Myself." Mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya [Bg. 7.7]. These few words, if you simply understand... Blindly or openly, it doesn't matter. Because if you touch fire, either blindly or openly, it will act. It will act. It is not that because I blindly accept Krsna as the Supreme Person, that will not act. No, it will act. Even if you have accepted Krsna blindly, it will act. Because the thing is the same. Either you accept in open eyes or blind eyes. So similarly, if you accept this theory -- it is not theory; this is fact, that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead -- these few words, then you are advanced student, immediately. Take it from me, that simply this conviction, that "Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead," then you are advanced student in spiritual life.

So all these persons associated with Krsna, Sri Krsna Caitanya, Sri Nityananda, Sri Advaita, and Gadadhara and Srivasa, all of them, they are one. One in this sense, they are all interested how to push on Krsna consciousness. Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He's trying personally, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And Nityananda Prabhu, Advaita Prabhu, Srivasa, Gadadhara, they are trying to help. So..., and to approach all these five supreme persons, you require the help of guru. Therefore the guru is offered first the respectful prayers, vande gurun. And gurun, bahu-vacana, plural number, that many gurus. But they are not many; they are one, guru-tattva. Just like Krsna has many forms, but that does not mean Krsna is different. No. Krsna is one. Similarly, guru, there may be many gurus, it doesn't matter, but their philosophy must be one: to teach everyone that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So there may be thousands of gurus, but the guru's business is to teach the disciple that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is the test of guru. If guru is teaching something else, nonsense, then he is not guru. Gurur na sa syat. Sat-karma-nipuno vipro mantra-tantra-visaradah. A brahmana, he is very expert in his business, in Vedic culture, Vedic mantras, tantras. That is the test of the brahmana, that he is very learned. So sat-karma-nipuno vipro mantra-tantra-visaradah. Visarada, very expert. Avaisnavo gurur na sa syat. But if he does not know what is Krsna or if he's not a devotee of Krsna, he cannot become guru. Sad-vaisnavah svapaco guruh. But one person who is coming from the family of dog-eaters... The dog-eaters, they are considered to be the lowest of the human beings. So, sva-paca, sva means dog, and paca means eater or cooker. So svapaca, even a person is coming from the svapaca family, and if he's a Vaisnava, if he's a devotee of Krsna, he can become guru. On the other side, even born in a brahmana family and very expert in Vedic ritualistic performances, mantra-tantra-visaradah, he cannot become guru if he does not understand Krsna. So therefore guru is very important because he has accepted Krsna... Tattva-darsibhih, he has seen the truth. So therefore guru is first offered... This is the test of guru. Guru does not become Krsna himself, but he canvasses door to door to induce that "You become devotee of Krsna." This is sign of guru. Vande gurun isa-bhaktan. Isa-bhaktan. Then we shall describe later on.

Thank you very much. (end)

Don't Live the Life of a Hog

Don't Live the Life of a Hog
Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.5.1-2

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Bhavananda:

rsabha uvaca
nayam deho deha-bhajam nr-loke
kastan kaman arhate vid-bhujam ye
tapo divyam putraka yena sattvam
suddhyed yasmad brahma-saukhyam tv anantam
 [SB 5.5.1]

"Lord Rsabhadeva told His sons: My dear boys, of all the living entities who have accepted material bodies in this world, one who has been awarded this human form should not work hard day and night simply for sense gratification, which is available even for dogs and hogs that eat stool. One should engage in penance and austerity to attain the divine position of devotional service. By such activity, one's heart is purified, and when one attains this position, he attains eternal, blissful life, which is transcendental to material happiness and which continues forever."

Prabhupada: Next verse.

Bhavananda:

mahat-sevam dvaram ahur vimuktes
tamo-dvaram yositam sangi-sangam
mahantas te sama-cittah prasanta
vimanyavah suhrdah sadhavo ye
 [SB 5.5.2]

"One can attain the path of liberation from material bondage only by rendering service to highly advanced spiritual personalities. These personalities are impersonalists and devotees. Whether one wants to merge into the Lord's existence or wants to associate with the Personality of Godhead, one should render service to the mahatmas. For those who are not interested in such activities, who associate with people fond of women and sex, the path to hell is wide open. The mahatmas are equipoised. They do not see any difference between one living entity and another. They are very peaceful and are fully engaged in devotional service. They are devoid of anger, and they work for the benefit of everyone. They do not behave in any abominable way. Such people are known as mahatmas."

Prabhupada: So Mr. Jyesthish(?) Gandhi, ladies and gentlemen, the instruction of Rsabhadeva is very important. Rsabhadeva was the father of Maharaja Bharata, under whose name this planet is called Bharatavarsa. So before retirement, Rsabhadeva instructed His one hundred sons about the aim of life. So this is Vedic civilization. So He says, "My dear boys, don't spoil your life by living like hogs." This very word has been used. Nayam deho deha-bhajam nr-loke kastan kaman arhate vid-bhujam ye [SB 5.5.1]. Vid-bhujam. Vid-bhujam means there are hogs who are very much enthusiastic to eat stool. So why this particular animal has been named? Because we can find especially in Indian villages, the hogs, day and night, they are working very hard to find out where there is stool. And as soon as he eats stool, the hog very easily become fatty and strong. Therefore a class of men, they like to eat the flesh of hog because it becomes easily fatty. And the hog's business is, as soon as he gets little strength, then next business is sex, without any discrimination. The hog has no discrimination who is sister, who is mother, who is daughter. So therefore this particular animal has been named, and Rsabhadeva warns His sons that "Don't live the life of hogs. Live like human being."

That is wanted. And for that purpose you require to execute tapasya. Tapasa brahmacaryena samena damena va [SB 6.1.13]. These are the injunction of the sastras. Human life is meant for tapasya, not to imitate the hogs and dogs. This is not human life. This is Vedic culture. The Krsna consciousness movement is tryng to give this Vedic culture all over the world, but they are after hogs and dogs. What can be done? This is very difficult job. But still we have to do, because we have placed ourself to become servant of Krsna. Never mind we have to face so many dangerous positions; still we have to do this thankless task. "My dear brothers, do not be hogs and dogs. Be a saintly person." This is our mission. That is India's culture. Bhagavad-gita, the same thing said: manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye [Bg. 7.3]. Siddhi. Siddhi means perfection. Nobody is interested how to make this life perfect. Everyone is being carried away by the waves of material nature. This is not life. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, a Bengali Vaisnava poet, he has written one song, kena mayara vase yaccha bhese kaccha habu dubu bhai. Jiva krsnadasa ei visvasa korleto ar duhkha nai. Mayara vase. There is the laws of nature. We are under the grip of laws of nature. You cannot violate. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27]. If you have touched fire, it doesn't matter whether you are elderly person or a child, innocent or knowingly or unknowingly, the fire must burn. There is no excuse. Similarly, we are contaminating different types of modes of nature. There are three modes of material nature -- sattva-guna, raja-guna and tamo-guna. Now mix it up, three into three equal to nine, nine into nine it becomes eighty-one. Again eighty-one... It increases. Those who are expert in mixing color, they know how to make different colors by mixing the original three colors: blue, yellow and red. Similarly, we are in this material world under the clutches of the modes of material nature, and according to different circumstances we are mixing with different modes of nature. Karanam guna-sango 'sya sad-asad-yoni-yonisu [Bg. 13.22]. Because we are mixing with different types of material nature, next life we are preparing. Tatha dehantara praptir. We have to accept another body. Karanam guna-sango 'sya. This is our position. Don't be very happy that "Today I am such and such big person. It will continue." No, sir, it will not continue. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. You have to change your body.

So we have to understand this responsibility of life. That is human life -- not to enjoy senses by imitating the hogs and dogs. This is not human civilization. We have to learn from the sastras how our life is being transformed from one form to another, and there are 8,400,000 different species of life. Once this human form of life missed and if you are put into these waves of birth and death, then the opportunity finished. We must always be alert that we have got this responsibility. The Rsabhadeva says that tapo divyam putraka yena suddhyed sattva [SB 5.5.1]. Sattva means existence. Your existence is eternal. That is the first information in the Bhagavad-gita. Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. Na jayate na mriyate va. This is the first instruction. There are so many commentator or instructor of Bhagavad-gita, but they are missing the first instruction. They are not interested that "What is going to happen my next life?" They are not interested. Nobody takes care. They have concluded they have no life after death. This body is finished, everything is finished. Most irresponsible life. This is not to be carried on. Rsabhadeva says that "My dear sons, don't live this irresponsible life like animals, hogs and dogs, but take the responsibility of human life. Undergo austerities, penances, as they ae recommended in the sastras and make your life..." It is individual. If this movement cannot be taken massively, every individual can practice it. That is Indian culture. Every Indian was educated how to become a brahmana, for coming to this platform of austerity. And following the examples of brahmana, the ksatriya and the vaisyas and the sudras, they also benefited.

So this is a very elaborate scientific subject matter, and we are trying to present all over the world. Why not our Indian brothers take it very seriously? Why we should be carried away by the waves of material nature? This is not very good idea. Tapo divyam putraka yena suddhyed sattva [SB 5.5.1]. Sattva, my existence. At the present moment... Just like I am coughing. So because I am, for the present moment, I am diseased. So this is the symptom of coughing. Similarly, why I am dying? This should be the question. Ke ami kena more japatiya traya. I hear from Bhagavad-gita that I am eternal: na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. Na jayate na mriyate va. Then why I am dying? This is intelligence. Why I am dying? This "why." Kena Upanisad. But this is not being educated. We are carried away by the temporary problems and missing the chance of human life. This is not very good, and Rsabhadeva especially instructs that mahat-sevam dvaram ahur vimuktes. If you actually want liberation from these clutches of maya, vimukti, vimukti... Vimukti means liberation. What is liberation? Muktir hitva anyatha rupam svarupena avasthitih. We are living in a different way. This is not mukti. This is conditioned. I am living as Indian condition, I am living as European condition. This is not mukti. You must live in your original form. That is called mukti. Muktir hitva anyatha rupam. Now we are living anyatha rupam. Somebody is living as Indian, somebody is living as European, somebody as cat, somebody as dog, somebody... This is anyatha rupam. You must realize yourself,

brahma-bhutah prasannatma
na socati na kanksati
samah sarvesu bhutesu
mad-bhaktim labhate param
 [Bg. 18.54]

So Dr. Jyestish(?) gave stress on bhakti. That is very good idea. So simply by becoming bhakta... Kevalaya... Kecid kevalaya bhaktya vasudeva-parayanah. Kevalaya bhakta. Simply if you take to the process of bhakti... That is recommended in the Bhagavad-gita also. Bhaktya mam abhijananti. If you want to know God, if you want to know the relationship with God, if you know what is your business after understanding God, then bhakti. Krsna says. Krsna, no... Although there are different ways of self-realization -- karma, jnana, yoga, bhakti, these are the principles. But Krsna recommends that "If you want to know Me actually, then bhaktya." Krsna teaches Arjuna Bhagavad-gita because Arjuna was a devotee. Bhakto 'si me priyo 'si: [Bg. 4.3] "Because you are My dear friend and bhakta, therefore I am teaching you."

So bhakti-marga is not very difficult. Very easy. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. Any child can do it. Any child, if he sees the form of Lord Krsna in the temple, he remembers, and he continues to think of Krsna. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto. And if you think of Krsna always, automatically you become devotee. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto. And then mad-yaji, little offering. Patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati [Bg. 9.26]. Where is the difficulty? Little flower, little fruit, little water. Krsna is not poor person, (that) He wants something from you. But yo me bhaktya prayacchati. He wants to revive your original Krsna consciousness. Therefore He comes. Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata [Bg. 4.7]. So in India we have got this opportunity. Why should we miss this opportunity? It is a suicidal policy. Don't do it. Take to it very seriously.

Thank you very much.

Devotee: Jaya, Srila Prabhupada!

Tamala-krsna: If anyone has any questions, this is the time. The process of receiving knowledge is to place inquiry at the perfect person, the spiritual master. So if any of you have any questions, there will be a microphone up front, and you can come up and place your questions to Srila Prabhupada. (no one responds)

Prabhupada: All right. Don't try to agitate them. Chant Hare Krsna. Oh, they are coming?

Guest (1): If God is everywhere, why His presence not felt by everybody?

Prabhupada: Everybody is not intelligent. Mostly they are rascals.

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascid vetti mam tattvatah
 [Bg. 7.3]

This is the statement by God, that "Out of millions and millions of persons, one tries to become perfect. And out of many millions of perfect persons, one may understand God." So God understanding is not so easy, but if we want to understand, God will help us. That is the point.

Guest (1): Thank you.

Guest (2): I want to ask two separate questions. One question is number one. What is the meaning of the giving up of the fruition of action?

Prabhupada: Karmany evadhikaras te ma phalesu kadacana. This is the... Action and reaction, there are two things. But under both headings, action and reaction means you become bound up. Yajnarthe karma anyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanam. This is the statement, that if you work if you work for yajna... Yajna means Visnu. Then it is all right. Otherwise you become under the laws of karma, good or bad. You have to suffer or enjoy. There is no question of enjoyment; there is suffering. Therefore one should be taught not to accept the result of karma, but do it for Krsna, yajnarthe. Then you are free.

Guest (2): When the fruit comes, should we give it up?

Prabhupada: No. The fruit you can take as prasadam. Prasade sarve-duhkhanam hanir asyopajayate. When you take as prasadam, then you are not bound up. But if you enjoy it as your fruitive result, then you have to suffer or enjoy. That is not good.

Guest (2): We have that difficult with us.

Prabhupada: No difficulty.

Guest (2): Because when the fruit comes, we cannot distinguish whether it is ripened one or the wrong one. How to distinguish?

Prabhupada: Yes. So it is said clearly, yajnarthe. You work for yajna. Krsnarthe. Yajna, another name of Krsna or Visnu. Then it is all right. Otherwise you will have to suffer.

Guest (2): My next question is...

Prabhupada: First of all, you understand this question, that you have to work for Yajna. Then you are free. Otherwise you will be entangled.

Guest (2): My next question is, I don't think God is opposed to sex. Seriously. I have heard many a lecture, and it is always stressed that as if the God is opposed to sex. But I don't think that's so. And from Gita, Krsna Himself says...

Prabhupada: God is never opposed to sex. Who said? God said, dharmaviruddhah kamo 'smi: "Sex which is not against the regulative principle of religious life, that I am." God never says that "Stop sex." Otherwise, why there is grhastha asrama? Asrama means that there is Krsna consciousness. As soon as we say, "Here is an asrama," we understand that there is consciousness of Krsna. So brahmacari asrama, grhastha asrama, vanaprastha asrama, sannyasa asrama, make it asrama and follow the rules and regulations of asrama. Then it is all right. Otherwise you are bound up by the laws of nature.

Guest (2): As we heard in the beginning, one of the principal statements that a man goes on the motor train, stands there for two hours, reaches his place of business, and work there from nine o'clock in the morning to five o'clock in the evening, returns back, has his food and sex and all that. I found many a people who have worked very hard, raised children very nicely, have sex, but lead a good life. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

Prabhupada: Yes, if there is no wrong, it is all right. But this sort of life is not very palatable.

Guest (2): Because I find even the dogs...

Prabhupada: If you like that life, it is very good. That is up to you. But I don't think this is a very nice way of life, to work so hard simply for bread.

Guest (2): No, I agree there.

Prabhupada: Then agreed, agreed. Then why disagree? (laughter) That's all right, no more.

Tamala-krsna: Another question, Prabhupada, a different man.

Prabhupada: Yes.

Guest (3): Karma is the cause of also the cycle of death and birth. So virtuous karma of action, liberation of man are inclined to the supreme (?). If it is so, that is called mukta. If it is so, what is the first cause that should denial(?) me from the supreme or the action?

Prabhupada: Karanam guna-sango 'sya [Bg. 13.22]. We have already mentioned. Karanam, the first cause. Guna-sango 'sya. As soon as you want to associate with the modes of material nature, then you are bound up, immediately, by the modes of material nature. Then your work begins. Karanam guna-sango 'sya. That is natural. Actually, every living entity is constitutionally the servant of Krsna, but when he wants to enjoy without Krsna, without becoming servant of Krsna, he wants to enjoy independently this material nature, then he has to associate with the modes of material nature and he becomes bound up. Yajnarthe karma anyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah [Bg. 3.9]. So you have to know or study all these understanding. Then you will understand what is what. That's all.

Guest (3): No, when we are with the Krsna...

Prabhupada: Huh, what is that?

Guest (3): ...then we are in supreme bliss.

Prabhupada: What is that?

Guest (3): When we are with Krsna, we are enjoying the supreme bliss there. As soon as we come to this material world we are in a miserable condition.

Prabhupada: Well this is natural.

Guest (3): Why did we left Sri Krsna and came to this world? What was the cause? There was no action at all.

Prabhupada: There is cause: karanam guna-sango 'sya [Bg. 13.22]. There is master and servant. The servant sometimes desires, "Why not become a master?" That is natural. So...

Guest (3): No. When I was with Krsna, I was, matter was (indistinct) that my master is served.

Prabhupada: You are master? You are kicked by the material nature and you are master? Why you are so falsely proud? You are not master.

Guest (3): But you said that the moksa is I am, once...

Prabhupada: Moksa means that when you are eternal servant of Krsna. Whe
n you desire to become master of the world, then you become bound up. And when you give up this artificial desire, that is moksa.

Guest (3): Thank you.

Guest (4): Would you agree that God is just a concept? If you do not, please give a logical reason for that.

Prabhupada: What is that?

Guest (4): Would you agree that God is just a concept? If you do not agree to that, please explain it logically.

Prabhupada: Why shall I agree, God is only concept?

Guest (4): Because I want it logically.

Prabhupada: You do not know logic. You have to learn logic.

Guest (4): But I still would like you to explain it logically.

Prabhupada: Yes, but you have to learn how to know it. There is master. There is master. Just like you cannot prove logically that without father there is a child. This is no logic.

Guest (4): Not without logic.

Prabhupada: This is no logic. There cannot be any child without father. Therefore if anyone thinks that without father there can be child, he is animal. He has no logic.

Guest (4): But still the question is unanswered. Would you agree that God is just a concept?

Prabhupada: No, no. There must be father. Just like you see everything is growing out of this earth. Sarva-yonisu kaunteya sambhavanti murtayah yah [Bg. 14.4]. So there is mother, there is child. Where is the father? This is logic. Unless you come to this point, that there is mother, there is child, there must be father, then there is no logic. Without father there cannot be child. Simply mother cannot give birth to a child. This is logic.

Guest (4): Thank you.

Prabhupada: Hare Krsna. Now chant Hare Krsna. (end)

"Evolution -- Darwinian or Divine"

"Evolution -- Darwinian or Divine"

76/03/25 Hotel Imperial, Delhi, Bhagavad-gita 2.11

(end)
