Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada:

avatara haya krsnera sad-vidha prakara
purusavatara eka, lilavatara ara
gunavatara, ara manvantaravatara
yugavatara, ara saktyavesavatara

Now, we have been discussing about incarnations. These incarnations are concerned so far the maintenance of the material world is required. In the spiritual world there is no incarnation. There is a permanent situation of the spiritual planets, and in different planets, He, Krsna, has different expansions under different symbolic representation, and they are differently named. There is no change. But in the material world, when we speak of incarnation, that is in relationship with this material world. In this... For the material world these incarnations are expanded. And what are they? First the purusavatara; then lilavatara; then gunavatara, three; then manvantaravatara, four; then yugavatara, five; and then saktyavesavatara. Saktyavesavatara.

So these incarnations are manifested at different times according to the need. Just like in the Bhagavad-gita it is stated,

yada yada hi dharmasya
glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthanam adharmasya
tadatmanam srjamy aham
 [Bg. 4.7]

There is a system. In the process of this material world there is a system. Just like for maintenance of your state, United States, there is system of government, and there is an aim. Just like your government does not like that..., there should be no Communistic persons, and you write that "We trust in God." It is better to trust in God. You have got a system. Similarly, the maintenance of the whole material world, there is a system. It is not blind. Foolish creatures, they think that everything has come out of nothing, and it is being managed by nature. No. Behind nature there is God. In the Bhagavad-gita you have learned, mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa-caracaram: [Bg. 9.10] "Under My superintendence the material nature is working." Material nature is not blind. Just like foolish person, because he cannot see President Johnson and the governmental personalities, they think, "It is going on. Nobody is there behind this government, and it is going on." So similarly, persons who have no knowledge in the affairs of this material world, they think that "This material nature is working, and automatically, by magic, the sun is coming out, the moon is coming out, and the season is changing, and everything is going on just like magic, and we are the master of everything." Never think..., these foolish persons never think that they are not masters, they are servant, servant of the material nature.

So that is their foolishness. Therefore, when there is too much foolishness, so there is need of avatara, incarnation, to correct. Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati [Bg. 4.7]. Whenever there is, I mean to say, discrepancies in the maintenance of law and order of this material nature, there is need of avatara, incarnation. Because it is God's kingdom, it is also secondary kingdom -- real kingdom is in the spiritual world -- so God comes in different avatara. And when the material world is created, the first avatara is purusa-avatara. The Maha-Visnu, Garbhodakasayi, They create. And then lilavatara. Lilavatara, under some particular circumstances, to save some particular devotee, or to display some particular feature... Just like Lord Rama, He incarnated. He is lilavatara. Then gunavatara. For maintenance of this material world there are different kinds of modes of nature, and to control those modes of nature there are avataras, Brahma, Visnu, Mahesvara. Lilavatara. Then manvantaravatara. The changes of millenniums, that manvantaravatara. And then yugavataras, yugavatara, in each and every yuga. Just like this Kali-yuga. This is called Kali-yuga. In the Kali-yuga the incarnation is Lord Caitanya.

It is stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam... There is a chapter. Nava-yogendra, nine great mystics, met one very powerful king, and they explained, each and every one of them. They explained about spiritual things. And there was a transcendentalist amongst them. Amongst the nine personalities, there was one whose name was Camasa Muni. The Camasa Muni said... That is explained in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. When he was asked by Viveha Maharaja, the King Viveha, "What is the avatara of this Kali-yuga, especial?" then he mentioned,

krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam
sangopangastra-parsadam
yajnaih sankirtana-prayair
yajanti hi su-medhasah
 [SB 11.5.32]

"Now, in this age of Kali-yuga, there will be avatara, incarnation, who is Krsna, but His color of the body is not black." That is Lord Caitanya. Lord Caitanya was very fair complexion, nice looking. So krsna-varnam tvisa. Tvisa, by complexion, He is not Krsna, but He is Krsna. Krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam and sango 'pangastra-parsadam. And He is associated by His confidential, I mean to say, devotees. You'll find Lord Caitanya always crowded by His devotees, always. His dancing mood -- you have seen the picture. Special associates, that Advaita, Gadadhara, Nityananda. So that incarnation, who is Krsna, but His color, His complexion, is not black, but He is associated with devotees... And the process of worshiping that incarnation is to chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare.

So in this yuga, this Kali-yuga, incarnation is Lord Caitanya, and the process of worship is this sound vibration. That is mentioned. In every avatara, every incarnation... Just like Lord Buddha. His name is also mentioned. And there will be another incarnation, Kalki. That is also mentioned. So they are mentioned, yugavatara. And saktyavesavatara. Saktyavesavatara. All avataras, their mission is to preach the message of God. Avatara has no other business. The message of God. Saktyavesavatara. This Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, this is also considered saktyavesavatara, the incarnation of sound. Incarnation of sound. It is described by Lord Caitanya that kali-kale nama rupe avatara: "In this Kali-yuga, in this age, this incarnation of name -- Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare -- to give facility to the conditioned soul." They cannot do anything. It is very difficult to perform any other religious rituals. This, the best anywhere, everywhere -- you can chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna. Namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-sakti. Sakti, this word is used, sakti. And from sakti, that energy, saktyavesavatara. So this name is also saktyavesavatara.

balya, pauganda haya vigrahera dharma
eta-rupe lila karena vrajendra-nandana

And when Krsna personally comes, He can be seen in two features, balya, pauganda: His childhood and boyhood, up to sixteenth year. That is the real feature of Krsna, kisora. And further features, that is expansion of Krsna, Vasudeva. Vasudevah sarvam iti [Bg. 7.19].

ananta avatara krsnera, nahika ganana
sakha-candra-nyaya kari dig-darasana

avatara hy asankhyeya
hareh sattva-nidher dvijah
yatha 'vidasinah kulyah
sarasah syuh sahasrasah

Now, He is concluding about the topics of incarnation, that "There are innumerable incarnations of Krsna. Nobody can count." He is giving the example: just like nobody can count how many waves are flowing in the river or in the ocean, similarly, it is impossible to count how many incarnation are there.

prathamei kare krsna 'purusavatara'
seita purusa haya trividha prakara'

Now, the first avatara, first incarnation, is the purusavatara. He divides Himself into three. This is stated in the Visnu Purana:

visnos tu trini rupani
purusakhyany atho viduh
ekam tu mahatah srastr

dvitiyam tv anda-samsthitam
trtiyam sarva-bhuta-stham
tani jnatva vimucyate

Tani jnatva vimucyate. Now, in the Bhagavad-gita you have read that,

janma karma me divyam
yo janati tattvatah
tyaktva deham punar janma
naiti mam eti kaunteya
 [Bg. 4.9]

Anyone who understands about the appearance and disappearance of God or His incarnation, simply by understanding this, one is liberated. And that person who understands, after quitting this material body, no more he comes here, but he goes back to Godhead to become one of His associates. Such persons who knows about the incarnations, they are not impersonalists. Therefore they do not merge in the impersonal Brahman feature, but they go to the different spiritual planets.

So visnos tu trini rupani: "That Visnu, for the creation of this material world, takes into three forms, trini rupani." Visnos tu trini rupani purusakhyany atho viduh: "And all of them are known as purusavataras." Maha-Visnu purusavatara, Garbhodakasayi Visnu purusavatara and Ksirodakasayi Visnu purusavatara. They are called purusavatara. Ekam tu mahatah srastr: "And the first purusavatara, who is called Maha-Visnu, He creates the material ingredients, which is called mahat-tattva." Everything requires ingredients. So the, I mean to say, original ingredients, the, what is called, subtle ingredients, they were created first by this Maha-Visnu. Then, from those ingredients, universes were produced. And each universe, ekam tu mahatah dvitiyam tv anda-samsthitam. The first purusavatara, Maha-Visnu, creates the ingredients, and the second Maha-Visnu enters in each and every universe. He is called dvitiya. And trtiyam sarva-bhuta-stham: "And the third, He enters into the body of all living entities, Paramatma, or the Supersoul." This is the division of three first incarnation.

ananta-sakti-madhye krsnera tina sakti pradhana
'iccha-sakti', 'kriya-sakti', 'jnana-sakti' nama

Now, Krsna has immense potencies, which are divided into three. What is that? Iccha-sakti, kriya-sakti, jnana-sakti. Iccha-sakti means His potency, whatever He wishes, that can be done, iccha. Kriya-sakti: then activity, kriya-sakti. And jnana-sakti, knowledge, knowledge. In the Vedic literature it is said, parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport]. Svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca. Just like one potency is working, producing flowers, producing flowers. We are seeing that a flower is being produced automatically, so nicely scented, so nicely colored. But because we are fools, therefore we think it is being produced automatically. No. It is produced by the kriya-sakti, by the active potency of God, kriya-sakti. Jnana-sakti: and there is such perfect knowledge that nobody can see any defect. You see a butterfly, how it is nicely painted. You just see duplicate in both the wings. Just like an artist paint nicely, it is painted. So we think it is coming out of nothing. This is our foolishness. Here is, that it is coming out of the jnana-sakti. But His jnana is so wide that simply by His desire, simply by His will, it can be executed. These are the things to be studied. Because we cannot see something before our eyes, that does not mean there is no existence. There is existence, but we do not know how one is working, how one is working. Svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca. Svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya.

Just like you see the anatomical condition of your body. Now, how this body is produced, how nicely, that every mechanical arrangement, the eyes (piece?), and the...? Just like a big factory and big office. The brain is the office, and stomach is the factory, and it is creating energy, it is coming to the heart and another place... Just like soap factory. Sometimes, in some place, it is being, some part of the manufacture is finished, another... In this way it is going on. But it is coming out a small pea. And how it is developing. In everything you can see. You take a seed, how it develops, a great tree. How much potency is there. So svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca. Everything is being done. I do not know. I claim, "It is my body," but I do not know how even a hair is growing. I do not know how it is replaced. I cut in the morning, and the next day, I see again there is. So these things are going on. Svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca. We have to study God's activity in this way, so many things, nature's study. So those who are intelligent, they can see that these things are working. What is that? Iccha-sakti, kriya-sakti, jnana-sakti, these three potencies of God, Krsna, is working.

iccha-sakti-pradhana krsna-icchaya sarva-karta
jnana-sakti-pradhana vasudeva adhisthata

Now, out of these three different potencies, then Krsna expands Himself also to conduct or to control or to act on these three potential power. The iccha-sakti, willing potency, that is being controlled by His expansion which is known as Vasudeva. Iccha-jnana vina na haya srjana. Without desire and without knowledge, nothing can be created, nothing. Suppose we are manufacturing so many things. Now, the manufacturer is first of all thinking, willing, that "This sort of thing, if we manufacture, it will be very nicely sold in the market." That is iccha-sakti. Then he acts, acts on it. That is called jnana-sakti. Without jnana, without willing, nothing is produced. So whenever you find something produced, you must know, behind that production there is that will, the supreme will, the supreme knowledge. This is study. Iccha-sakti-jnana...

iccha-jnana vina na haya srjana
tinera tina-sakti meli' prapanca-racana

So this iccha-sakti, this potency of will, supreme will, and the potency of supreme hand and the potency of supreme knowledge, these three things are conducting all affairs in this material world.

kriya-sakti-pradhana sankarsana balarama
prakrtaprakrta-srsti karena nirmana

And the potential activity, that is being done by the expansion of Sankarsana, either in this material world or in the spiritual world. So parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyat [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport]e. In this way the Lord is working in so many ways, and because we have no knowledge, we think that "There is no brain behind it. There is no knowledge behind it. Everything is coming out automatically, and we are the master of everything." That is called illusion. So by Krsna consciousness, you will be free from this illusion, and you will know how God is working by His different potential power.

Thank you very much. Any question? (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Nitai: "(As His pastimes, that Supreme Personality of Godhead, the greatest of the great,) accepted the subtle material energy, which is invested with the three material modes of nature and which is related with Visnu."

Prabhupada:

sa esa prakrtim suksmam
daivim gunamayim vibhuh
yadrcchayaivopagatam
abhyapadyata lilaya
 [SB 3.26.4]

So Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, as He says that sambhavamy atma-mayaya... [Bg. 4.6]. Sambhavamy atma-mayaya. Krsna and the living entities, both of them are the same quality, but when the living entities come in this material world, he is forced by the prakrti, by the material nature. But when Krsna comes, He is not forced, but by His free will, yadrcchaya upagatam... Yadrcchayaivopagatam abhyapadyata lilaya.

Sometimes the Mayavadi philosophers, they also take the living entities within this material world as lila. That is not lila. Lila refers to the pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Never... Nobody says that the living entity has come in this material world for lila. At least, the Vaisnava philosophers do not agree that. It is contradictory. Krsna said that "When I come..."

yada yada hi dharmasya
glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthanam adharmasya...
 [Bg. 4.7]

We should not accept Krsna's coming within this material world and our coming in this material world as the same process. Krsna comes as He is. He does not change. And because He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, almighty, even if He comes within this material world, the material qualities do not affect Him. That is isanam, isanam.

Just like a physician, a doctor, medical man. He goes to the hospital to treat the infected patients. So he is not affected by the infection. He has got such precautionary measures, or he is so equipped with, that he is not infected with the disease. Those who are weak... That is stated in the Bhagavatam: etad isanam isasya. That is isa. Isa means the controller. Rather, if something infectious come in touch with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, it becomes purified. Tejiyasam na dosaya [SB 10.33.29], it is said. Another example can be given: just like the sun. The sunshine absorbs water even from urine or any infectious place. Any filthy place, the sun absorbs the water. But the sun is not infected, because it is very powerful. Similarly, if you try to absorb water from the urine, then you will be infected. That is called etad isasya isanam.

Even those who are devotees, they are not infected by the three modes of material nature. We have many times repeated this verse of Bhagavad-gita:

mam ca yo 'vyabhicarena
bhakti-yogena sevate
sa gunan samatityaitan
brahma-bhuyaya kalpate
 [Bg. 14.26]

So even ordinary living entities, those who are devotees, they are not infected by the three modes of material nature. How we can expect the Supreme Lord can be infected by the three modes of material nature? That is not possible. This is not... Even from ordinary argument, it cannot be accepted.

Krsna or Krsna's incarnation... There are hundred and thousands of incarnation:

ramadi-murtisu kala-niyamena tisthan
nanavataram akarod bhuvanesu kintu
krsnah svayam samabhavat paramah puman yo
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
 [Bs. 5.39]

Krsna has innumerable expansions, ramadi. Rama, Lord Ramacandra, is also Krsna's expansion. Ramadi-murtisu kala. Kala means expansion of the expansion. Just like... I have given this example many times: the original candle, and you ignite another candle. That is second candle, and from the second, from the third; from the third, the fourth. In this way, all the candles, although you say, "This is first candle, second candle, third candle, fourth candle," but they are all equally powerful. So far candle-power is concerned, they are equally the same. Similarly, Krsna's incarnation, Krsna is the origin, krsnas tu bhagavan svayam [SB 1.3.28], the origin, person, adi-purusa. Govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami **. Still, the expansion of Krsna... Just like the first expansion is Balarama. Then Sankarsana, Pradyumna, Aniruddha. Then Narayana. Then again Sankarsana, Pradyumna, Aniruddha. Then Maha-Visnu. Then, from Maha-Visnu, Garbhodakasayi Visnu. From Garbhodakasayi Visnu to Ksirodakasayi Visnu. From Ksirodakasayi Visnu there are innumerable expansions, Paramatma expansion. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. So in this way there is... The Srimad-Bhagavata says, "Expansion of Krsna are so many, just like incessant waves in the river or in the ocean."

So that is one status of expansion. And another expansion is the jiva-tattva. We are also expansion. In the Varaha Purana it is said, svamsa and vibhinnamsa. The vibhinnamsa expansion, they are also innumerable, jivas. We are also expansion of Krsna. But svamsa and vibhinnamsa. So the vibhinnamsa expansion, they are minute, and the svamsa expansion, they are vibhu, unlimited. So in this way we have to understand the distinction between svamsa and vibhinnamsa. When svamsa expansion comes within this material world, He remains vibhu, or prabhu, and the vibhinnamsa expansion is always anu, very small, or servant. One is prabhu, and the other is servant. One is vibhu and the other is anu.

So the anu, vibhinnamsa jiva, when he comes within this material world, he becomes entrapped or his that jyoti... In the previous verse you have studied jyoti. Vibhinnamsa living entity, we are also jyoti. Just like spark. The original fire is also fire, and the spark fire, that is also fire. Quality, the same, but a spark, when falls down on your cloth, it can burn a little portion. Similarly, if the whole fire comes, then you become burned into pieces. The same example again: the sun and the sunshine. Sunshine is combination small particle of shining molecules. Similarly, we are also the same spark. Diparcir eva hi dasantaram abhyupetya dipayate [Bs. 5.46]. So Krsna and His expansion, They are all the same. And we, vibhinnamsa jiva, we are very small. Therefore our condition is different from Krsna. Krsna is not infected by the material qualities but, we become infected. Na mam karmani limpanti na me karma-phale sprha [Bg. 4.14], it is said in the Bhagavad-gita. The activities in this material world, Krsna remains unaffected, but we, being a small particle, we become infected by the qualities: tribhir gunamayair bhavaih.

So those who are too much infected by these material qualities, they cannot understand Krsna. Naham prakasah sarvasya yoga-maya-samavrtah [Bg. 7.25]. They think that "Krsna and we are the same." But that is not the fact. Avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritam [Bg. 9.11]. Because Krsna comes as human being, we may think that "Krsna is as good as I am." No, that should not be... Krsna is vibhu, and we are anu. Krsna is master, and we are servant. That is our eternal relationship. We should not forget that. And sa esa prakrtim suksmam daivim gunamayim vibhuh. Prakrti, prakrti, this prakrti is also Krsna's. Krsna, the supreme powerful, He can utilize the prakrti as He likes. He is not controlled by prakrti. But we are controlled by prakrti. Because He is vibhu... Vibhu means the great. So you cannot say great maya, or prakrti is greater than Krsna. You cannot say. Then your God is not great. If something is greater than God, then you cannot say God is great. If you accept this, that there is no more greater identity than Krsna, then you can say, "Krsna is great, or..." Krsna cannot be entrapped. Nunam mahatan tatra. If you are smaller, then you can be overpowered by the great. If your strength is lesser than another man... Say, two wrestler. If one wrestler is more powerful, he can defeat the other wrestler.

So therefore, here it is said that vibhuh... Krsna is vibhuh, and if He is covered by maya... As the Mayavadi philosopher thinks, that "When God comes within this material world, He is also covered by maya..." He is not covered by maya. If maya is greater than Krsna, then maya can cover Krsna. But that is not the fact. Krsna says, mama maya. That means... Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14]. If one surrenders to Krsna, then he becomes free from the clutches of maya. So how Krsna can be caught by maya? This is contradictory. If anyone surrenders to Krsna, he becomes free from the influence of maya, simply by surrendering. Then how Krsna can be influenced by maya? It is common sense. By surrendering to Krsna, by becoming a devotee of Krsna, you become free from the clutches of maya. Mam eva ye prapadyante. Simply by surrendering. Mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14]. So never think that Krsna... The Mayavadi thinks like that, that "We are one, Krsna and we. We are one." Yes, we are one -- in quality. The same thing: just like the fire and the spark, one in burning capacity. Even a small spark of the fire, it can burn. So we are one in the spiritual quality, but in quantity, we are different. Same example: vibhu and anu. This is very nice verse in the Bhagavad-gita, mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14].

In another verse is there,

bhakti-yogena manasi
samyak pranihite 'male
apasyat purusam purnam
mayam ca tad-apasrayam
 [SB 1.7.4]

Vyasadeva, Vyasadeva, when he was instructed by his spiritual master Narada Muni to write Srimad-Bhagavatam, at that time, by bhakti-yoga meditation, he could see the Supreme Personality of Godhead and this maya also. But it is said, mayam ca tad-apasrayam. Maya is situated in the back side, back side, without any influence upon Krsna, apasrayam, under the control. So maya is always controlled. Krsna is the controller of maya.

In another place, in the Brahma-samhita it is said, srsti-sthiti-pralaya-sadhana-saktir eka chayeva yasya bhuvanani bibharti durga [Bs. 5.44]. Durga is the material energy, and she has got immense power. Srsti-sthiti-pralaya-sadhana-saktih. She is controlling this creation or this whole universe, srsti, and sthiti, its maintenance, and pralaya. Three things she is controlling. She is so powerful. Srsti-sthiti-pralaya-sadhana-saktir eka chayeva yasya bhuvanani bibharti durga [Bs. 5.44]. The durga-sakti, material energy, she is so powerful, but it is working chayeva, just like shadow. Shadow has no independent capacity; it is dependent on the substance. Substance and shadow. So Krsna is the substance, and the power derived from Krsna, partially exhibited by the durga-sakti. In the Upanisad also it is said, na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate na tat-samas cabhyadhikas ca drsyate. Krsna, the Supreme Personality of God, He has nothing to do. Na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate na tat-samah. Nobody is equal to Him. Krsna also says in the Bhagavad-gita, mattah parataram nanyat kincit: [Bg. 7.7] "There is nothing superior than Me, the Supreme." In the Srimad-Bhagavatam also it is said, om namo bhagavate vasudevaya, satyam param dhimahi [SB 1.1.1]. That is the Supreme Truth.

So all the sastras will say that Krsna, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He has got different expansions unlimited. Although Krsna is one, but He can expand Himself into many, many millions. Advaitam acyutam anadim ananta-rupam [Bs. 5.33]. Ananta-rupam. And each rupam is acting in some universe. Just like at this time, here, you find darkness in Bombay, but the sun is present in all his different phases all over the world. Sun rises in the morning at, say, seven o'clock. So this seven o'clock to next seven o'clock, in the evening seven o'clock, you will find, if you immediately take information, somewhere it is seven o'clock, somewhere it is twelve o'clock, somewhere it is six o'clock, somewhere it is... All the time formula of the sun is present, although we are seeing there is no sun. Similarly, Krsna is present throughout the whole universe in some feature. In one universe you will find Krsna is taking birth, Janmastami. In some universe you will see Krsna is playing with the cowherd boys. Somewhere... In this way. Therefore it is called nitya-lila. Nitya-lila means the janmastami-lila is going on permanently somewhere or other. Therefore it is called lilaya, yadrcchaya.

So this is a great science, Krsna science, krsna-tattva. So we have to learn from the authorized Vedic literature about Krsna. And that is required in human life. Because if we simply understand the truth about Krsna, janma karma ca me divyam [Bg. 4.9], which are divine transcendental, yo janati tattvatah, if you try to understand and if you become fortunate to understand the divine nature of Krsna's lila, then you become liberated, immediately: tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9]. The Sankhya philosophy of Kapiladeva is explained in this way to understand Krsna.

So Krsna, yadrcchayaivopagatam abhyapadyata lilaya. Krsna is lila, and our coming here is not lila. We are forced. We are forced. Karmana daiva-netrena dehopapattaye [SB 3.31.1]. Krsna's body is sac-cid-ananda-vigraha [Bs. 5.1]. Krsna's body is not material. Even if we think it is material, still, it is sac-cid-ananda-vigraha. Just like one can argue that "Here is Krsna's form. It is made of stone. How it is sac-cid-ananda-vigraha?" But if you know the nature of Krsna, even He appears as stone, still He is sac-cid-ananda-vigraha. How? Because the stone is also energy of Krsna. That is said in the Upanisad:

na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate
na tat-samas cabhyadhikas ca drsyate
parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate...
 [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport]

So the stone is also another energy of Krsna, another energy of Krsna. And Sri Krsna is all-powerful. He can utilize His energy in anyway. He can utilize His energy in any way. Just like an electrician -- he knows how to utilize electricity for the refrigerator and the heater, although the heating process is just opposite of the cooling process. We see opposite. Similarly, material nature and spiritual nature, just opposite, but the same way: the electricity utilize for heating and electricity utilized for cooling. The energy is the same, but it is the manipulation of the engineer which can turn heat into cold and cold into heat. So therefore, for Krsna there is no material nature. Everything is spiritual nature. Even Krsna appears as material form, as stone, as matter, still, one who knows Krsna, he can derive Krsna's favor from any form. Otherwise the devotees are recommended to worship the Deity in the temple.

So do you think that the acaryas and the sastra have advised them to waste their time by worshiping a stone? It is all recommended by the acaryas, big, big acaryas. Just like Ramanujacarya. He established hundreds of temples all over India, Laksmi-Narayana temple especially, the Ramanuja-sampradaya. Similarly, Caitanya Mahaprabhu's sampradaya established hundreds of temples of Radha-Krsna. Big, big acarya. Do you mean to say they did mistake? As some people of our India, they say, "There is no need of worshiping in the temple." No. Why not need? Acaryopasanam, that is recommended, jnana. Acarya... Acaryas, they have established temples, many hundreds of thousands of temples, of Visnu mandira.

So this should be worshiped. Otherwise you cannot... Mahajano yena gatah sa panthah [Cc. Madhya 17.186]. If you do not follow acaryas, then...

tad viddhi pranipatena
pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jnanam
jnaninas tattva-darsinah
 [Bg. 4.34]

The acaryas are tattva-darsi. They know how to make you devotee. Therefore they have prescribed, and Krsna in His any condition, life, He is sac-cid-ananda-vigraha.

isvarah paramah krsnah
sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah
anadir adir govindah
sarva-karana-karanam
 [Bs. 5.1]

Unless Krsna becomes available to your service, then how you can serve? We have, at the present moment, no eyes to see Krsna. Therefore Krsna, out of His causeless mercy, He has appeared in His original form just to receive or accept service from you. You cannot serve Krsna in His virad-rupa. Therefore Krsna has come to you to accept your service in this metal or stone form. But He is not metal or stone. This is called krsna-tattva-jnana.

Arcye visnau sila-dhir gurusu nara-matir vaisnave jati-buddhih. These things are forbidden. You cannot... Arcye visnau sila-dhih. Krsna or Visnu, the same thing -- if you think that this murti is made of stone, sila-dhih, or Salagrama-sila, if you think it is sila or stone, this is naraki-buddhih. This is not recommended. It is... Don't think. Arcye visnau sila-dhir gurusu nara-matih. And those who are guru, spiritual master, Vaisnava, if you think of them that he is ordinary human being, that is forbidden. Ganga-jala or caranamrta, if you think ordinary water, that is forbidden. Vaisnave jati-buddhih. Vaisnava, who has become devotee of Krsna, if you think that he belongs to this caste, he belongs to that caste, that is also forbidden. Naraki-buddhih. These things are naraki-buddhih. At least, those who do not know how Krsna can be transcendental in all His features... Therefore we are forbidden, "Don't take like that." It is a fact that this Krsna in this temple is the same origin Krsna who is in the Vaikuntha, but because we have no eyes to see, because we are not mature to see Krsna, therefore we should accept this, I mean to say, negation, that "Don't think like that." Then we will be able to understand.

So that janma karma me divyam [Bg. 4.9]. Nothing is Krsna's anything material. Everything is spiritual. But by His lilaya, to manifest different lila, He accept different types of body. But they are all Krsna, the same original person. Advaitam acyutam... Acyuta, He does not fall down. Therefore His name is Acyuta. Acyuta means never falls down, never deviates. He is always in His sac-cid-ananda-vigraha [Bs. 5.1]. Not that because He has appeared for my convenience to accept my service in this form which I am seeing or the atheist is seeing, that it is stone. No. He is not stone. Advaitam acyutam. He doesn't fall. He does not deviate. Otherwise, there are many stories. That, in the Caitanya-caritamrta, the Saksi-gopala. Saksi-gopala temple is there in Jagannatha Puri. Just one station before Puri there is Saksi-gopala station. And there is a temple. Saksi, saksi means the witness. That vigraha, that Deity, was in Vrndavana. He came to give evidence for His devotee. Therefore He is known as Saksi-gopala. So devotee talks. Even if you think, "This is stone," or "This is metal," but devotee can talk, and Krsna talks with him. There are many instances. That requires advancement of spiritual life.

So this is called tattva, to know about Krsna perfectly. And the informations are there in the sastras. And simply to understand it, we require a little qualification. We require little qualification. Otherwise, everything is there. That qualification is to increase the temper of your devotion, or increase the quality of your love for Krsna. Premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santah sadaiva hrdayesu vilo... [Bs. 5.38]. And that love can be increased by the process:

adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sango 'tha bhajana-kriya
tato 'nartha-nivrttih syat tato nistha rucis tatah
athasaktis tato bhavas tatah premabhyudancati
sadhakanam ayam premnah pradurbhave bhavet kramah
 [Cc. Madhya 23.14-15]

This is step by step.

So our this Krsna consciousness movement is giving, educating people how to become Krsna conscious, how to know the science of Krsna. Krsna-tattva-vetta. And anyone who knows Krsna perfectly well... That is... Caitanya Mahaprabhu approves that it doesn't matter what he is, a scientist. Yei krsna-tattva-vetta, sei 'guru' haya: [Cc. Madhya 8.128] "Anyone who knows perfectly well the science of Krsna," krsna-tattva-vetta, "in truth, he is guru." Nobody can become guru unless he knows the science of Krsna. Therefore it is said in the sastra that sat-karma-nipuno viprah. Vipra means brahmana.

Brahmana, he is supposed to know six kind of activities, sat-karma. Sat means six. What is that six kinds of? Pathana pathana. Brahmana must be very learned, very expert, expertly learned in Vedic knowledge. That is called pathana. And pathana: and he must teach others. He must be teacher, not that "I know and keep all the knowledge in my belly." No. Therefore formerly all the brahmanas they had catuspathi. The brahmana will sit down anywhere and begin teaching others. The student will come. That is brahmana's business. Pathana... But unless he is himself learned, how he can teach? So therefore, first of all he must be learned, pathana, and then pathana, then he can teach others. Pathana pathana yajana yajana. He must worship the Supreme Lord, and he must teach others how to worship the Supreme.

That... What is this, Visvanatha Cakravarti's verse? Niyunjato 'pi. Sri-vigraharadhana-nitya-nana **. One of the symptoms of guru is described by Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura, sri-vigraha aradhana: "He knows how to worship the Deity." Sri-vigraharadhana-nitya-nana-srngara-tan-mandira-marjanadau **. Dressing the Deity and tan-mandira-marjanadau, and cleansing the temple, keeping everything fit in the temple. So the guru knows it, how to do it, and he teaches his disciple.

sri-vigraharadhana-nitya-nana-
srngara-tan-mandira-marjanadau
yuktasya bhaktams ca niyunjato 'pi...

He is personally engaged, and he engages disciples. Not that you make a disciple and you keep him aside, "You cannot touch." This is going on. How? Then how he has become your disciple? If you have accepted him as disciple, how you can keep him aloof? No. "You are sudra. You are mleccha." Therefore vaisnave jati-buddhih. You cannot make Vaisnava... As soon as he becomes Vaisnava, no more jati. He is transcendental. Sa gunan sama...

Jati -- brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra -- that is within this material world, not in the spiritual world. Spiritual world, everyone is eternal servant of Krsna. There is no more jati, no more distinction. Everything serving. That one. The master is also spiritual, and the servant is also spiritual, and there is no other relationship. Here in the material world we artificially want to become..., we want to become God. But in the spiritual world there is no such conception. In the spiritual world there are also living entities. They are called nitya-siddha. Nitya-siddha means eternally perfect. There are two kinds of living entities: nitya-siddha and nitya-baddha, eternally conditioned. Yesterday we were reading that nitya-supta-buddhih. Here in this material world, however we may be acting, we are sleeping. Ya nisa sarva-bhutanam. They are sleeping. We may show very good activities everywhere, but a saintly person will see that "All these rascals are sleeping." And these rascals will see the devotee is sleeping. Because they will see that "These rascals, they have taken to Krsna consciousness, doing nothing for their bodily comfort and sense gratification. They are sleeping. They are misusing this life." And the devotees are seeing that "These rascal, those who are not Krsna conscious, they are sleeping." So ya nisa sarva-bhutanam tasyam jagarti samyami.

So this is going on, opposite of... Actually, the conditioned soul in this material world, they are sleeping. Therefore Vedas says, uttisthata jagrata prapya varan nibodhata, that "You rascal, you are why sleeping?" They are not sleeping. They are thinking, "I'm so busy." But that busy-ness is also dream, just like a man sleeping and dreaming that he is very busy. So this kind of life is condemned. Therefore the Veda says, "Get up! Get up! Now you have got this..." Prapya varan nibodhata: "You have got this human form of life. You try to understand Krsna. You try to understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Try to understand your relationship and act accordingly. Then your life will be successful. Otherwise you are wasting your time."

Thank you very much. (end)

"The Miser And The Mahatma"

68/12/16 London, Bhagavad-gita 2.46-62

Prabhupada: Read. Those who have books, open. Where is your son?

Young woman: Sleeping.

Prabhupada: That's all right. You can come forward, that girl. Come on. Come forward, yes. Sit down. Hare Krsna. Read.

Tamala Krsna: "All purposes that are served by the small pond can at once be served by the great reservoirs of water. Similarly, all the purposes of the Vedas can be served to one who knows the purpose behind them." [Bg. 2.46]

Prabhupada: Now try to understand this. The long-standing system in India in the villages... India is originally village life. City life very few. Perhaps there was only big city, New Delhi now. In those days Hastinapura, and next to that was Dvaraka. So very big city, they were only two or three. Mostly people used to live in villages. Still ninety percent population of India is in the village. So in the village, the system is they have different kinds of wells. One well is meant for taking bath, one well is meant for washing clothes, one well is meant for taking drinking water, one well is meant for washing dishes. So in this way, in the villages there shall be half a dozen wells. So here the example is given, just like one can take service from a particular type of well for a particular purpose, but if he goes to the river, ever-flowing river, then he can take his bath there, he can wash clothes, he can wash dishes, he can everything. All water purposes will be served in one river. Because the water is flowing there. There is no contamination. Any water which is always flowing, there cannot be any contamination. A stagnant water which is not flowing, there may be contamination. Therefore the restriction is that you should take bath in this well, you wash your clothings in this well. So small wells, they are restricted for a certain purpose, but in the river, there is no restriction. Everything can be done there.

So Bhagavad-gita... You'll find in the Fifteenth Chapter. The Lord says, vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyah [Bg. 15.15]. The purpose of all scriptures and Vedas is to know Krsna or God. And the Upanisad says, kasmin tu bhagavo vijnate sarvam idam vijnatam bhavati. If you simply understand the Supreme Absolute, then you understand everything. So this Krsna consciousness means it includes everything. The karmis' activities, fruitive actions, the jnanis', philosophers' speculation, the yogis' mystic power, and bhaktas', devotees' worship of the Lord -- everything is included. Just like if you have got a millions of dollar, then ten dollar is there, five dollar is there, twenty dollar is there, everything is there. So if you take to Krsna consciousness, then you take all kinds of... All the well, all the purpose of different type of well is served in the river of Krsna consciousness. That example is said. It includes everything. Just like Krsna consciousness, we are... Take practical example. We are Krsna conscious. Now take any religion and take their highest conclusion -- it is there in Krsna consciousness. Take for example Buddhism. They say nonviolence. Oh, we are nonviolent. Christianism, love of God. Oh, we are simply meant for loving God. Mohammedan, servant of God, to render service to the Lord. Oh, we are twenty-four hours engaged in the service of the Lord. Yogis -- samadhi, always in samadhi, absorbed in the thought of the Supreme. We are always absorbed in the thought of Krsna. So take any religion, any process, any well. This river, Krsna consciousness, will overflood everyone. There cannot be any comparison. What is there? How much water is there in the well? In the river, unlimited. Thousands of wells can be merged into the river. This example is given. Kasmin tu bhagavo vijnate sarvam idam vijnatam bhavati. If you know Krsna, you know everything. You know science, you know mathematics, you know philosophy, you know geography, everything. There is no dirth of knowledge. Don't think that a Krsna conscious person actually, he can be a foolish man. No. That is given guarantee in the Bhagavad-gita,

tesam evanukampartham
aham ajnana-jam tamah
nasayamy atma-bhava-stho
jnana-dipena bhasvata
[Bg. 10.11]

A devotee who is always in Krsna consciousness, for him there is nothing unknown. He knows everything. Just like we can give information of the whole creation. Not only of this material world, of the spiritual world. Clear conception. Where is where, what is what, everything. That is Krsna consciousness. The more you make progress, then you fully, I mean to say, conversant with all departmental knowledge. Everything is completed.

Tamala Krsna: 47: "You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Neither consider yourself the cause of action, nor should you be attached to inaction [Bg. 2.47]." Purport: "There are three considerations here: prescribed duties, capricious work, and inaction. Prescribed duties means activities in terms of one's position in the modes of material nature. Capricious work means actions without the sanction of authority; and inaction means not performing one's prescribed duty. The Lord advised that Arjuna not be inactive, but that he be active in his duty without being attached to the result. One who is attached to the result of his work is also the cause of the action. Thus he is the enjoyer or sufferer of the result of such action. As far as prescribed duties are concerned, they can be fitted into three subdivisions: routine work, emergency work, and desired activities. Routine work in terms of the scriptural injunctions is done without desire for results. As one has to do it, obligatory work is action in the modes of goodness. Work with results becomes the cause of bondage, and so such work is not auspicious. Everyone has his proprietary right in regard to his duties, but should act without attachment to the result. Thus such disinterested obligatory duties helps to lead one to the path of liberation. Arjuna was advised by the Lord to fight as a matter of duty without attachment to the result. His nonparticipation in the battle is another side of attachment. Such attachment never leads one to the path of salvation. Any attachment, positive or negative, is cause for bondage. Inaction is sinful. Therefore fighting as a matter of duty was the only auspicious path to salvation for Arjuna." 48: "Be steadfast in your duty, O Arjuna, and abandon all attachment to success or failure. Such evenness of mind is called yoga [Bg. 2.48]."

Prabhupada: This is the explanation of yoga, evenness of mind. Yoga-samatvam ucyate. If you work for Krsna, then there is no cause of lamentation or jubilation. Jubilation is there because you are working for Krsna, but there is no cause of lamentation. Yoga-sthah kuru karmani, yogah karmasu kausalam. That is the secret of activities, how you can very diligently work at the same time you are not entangled with the actions. That is the secret. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: 49: "O Dhananjaya, rid yourself of all fruitive activities by devotional service and surrender fully to that consciousness. Those who want to enjoy the fruits of their work are misers [Bg. 2.49]." 50: "A man engaged in devotional service rids himself of both good and bad actions [Bg. 2.50]."

Prabhupada: Now here it is... One significant word is there. One who wants to enjoy the result of his work, he is miser. He is miser. What is the opposite word of miser? Huh? What is the opposite word?

Visnujana: Philanthropic?

Prabhupada: Liberal, is it not? So those who are in Krsna consciousness, they are liberal. And those who are acting for his own benefit, they are miser. They are mahatmas who are working for Krsna. That is also stated in the Bhagavad-gita, mahatma. Mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah [Bg. 9.13]. Sa mahatma sudurlabhah.

bahunam janmanam ante
jnanavan mam prapadyate
vasudevah sarvam iti
sa mahatma sudurlabhah
[Bg. 7.19]

After many, many births when a person is actually wise, jnanavan, perfectly in knowledge... What is that symptom of perfect knowledge? Vasudevah sarvam iti. Krsna is everything. That is perfection of knowledge. Vasudevah sarvam iti [Bg. 7.19], prapadyate mam. If I find out somebody supreme, then it is my duty to surrender unto him. Yes. But as soon as I surrender, I become mahatma, liberal, not miser. Miser is thinking on his own account, "How much I'll get? How much in my share?" And liberal means he has no more share, everything Krsna's. This is Krsna consciousness. Sa mahatma sudurlabhah. That sort of mahatma, liberal person, is very rare. So Krsna consciousness, a person in Krsna consciousness, you cannot find many, it is not possible. Everyone is miser. He's always thinking, "How much share is mine? How much I can collect for my personal?" And Krsna conscious person is simply trying: how much he is giving to Krsna. This way. One this way, and one this way. This is miser and liberal.

Everyone, in all principle, they go to God for asking something. That is also described in the Bhagavad-gita, artah artharthi jnani jijnasu. Four kinds of people go to God: those who are distressed... Of course, they are pious. Anyone who goes to God, never mind even for asking daily bread, they are pious. But those who are not going to God, they are impious, miscreant. One who is thinking, "Oh, why shall I go to God for asking bread? I can produce my bread." So that man who is very proud of producing his bread is a nonsense miscreant. And a man who is going to the church, praying, "God give my daily bread," he is pious, but he's not a pure devotee. But there is chance of his becoming pure devotee in future. So artah artharthi jijnasu. So the Krsna consciousness is nothing to ask from Krsna. "Oh, Krsna, give us our daily bread." No. It is far, far higher. Because he knows that "Krsna, I ask or I do not ask, Krsna is supplying me bread. He's supplying bread to the beast, birds and animals, insects, and I have sacrificed my life for Krsna, and He'll not supply me bread?" Is it very intelligent? No. He knows perfectly well that "Krsna is taking care of me. Now it is my duty how much service I can render to Krsna. That is my business." That is Krsna consciousness. Krsna is not miser. He is supplying millions and millions of living entities bread. So what is the use of asking Him? Without asking Him... The birds, the beasts, they have no church and pray to God, "Oh, give us our daily bread," but nobody is starving. Nobody is starving. Eko bahunam vidadhati kaman. That one Supreme is supplying everyone's necessities. Either you go to church or don't go to church, Krsna is so kind. He's supplying food everyone. Therefore one who is in the highest standard of consciousness, he will think only that "Krsna is supplying so much for us; what I am doing for Krsna?" That is Krsna consciousness. That is Krsna... That is intelligence. That is mahatma. That is liberal. He begins to become a liberal. So long one is not in Krsna consciousness, he's miser, simply thinking, "How much bread I have got? How much...?"

Miser means, another sense of miser is one who cannot utilize money properly. Suppose one has got one million dollars from his father, but he is simply thinking that "I shall see the money and I shall not utilize it. If I go to utilize, I may lose it. Better I will see every day in my treasury box." He's also miser. Similarly, this human form of life, simply used for the sense gratification, is miser. He cannot utilize this form of body for increasing the asset of Krsna consciousness. Therefore he is miser. And one who is properly utilizing this valuable life for understanding Krsna, he is brahmana. Brahma janati iti brahmana. Brahmana means one who knows the Supreme Absolute Truth. He is called brahmana. The sacred thread is offered to a person who knows Krsna. Otherwise it is not awarded. This is a symbolic representation. This man has got sacred thread, that means he knows Krsna, Brahman, Supreme Brahman. Just like Arjuna, param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan [Bg. 10.12]. In the Tenth Chapter you'll find. Arjuna says that "You are param brahma. Krsna, You are param brahma." Similarly, if anyone knows Brahman, Parabrahman, Krsna, he is brahmana. Brahma janati iti brahmana. One who knows the Supreme Brahman, Krsna, he is brahmana. Not a person who is born in the family of a brahmana. He may be a candala by his mentality.

So Bhagavata says, yasya yal laksanam proktam pumso varnabhivyanjakam. There are symptoms. You'll find all these in Bhagavad-gita, who is brahmana, who is ksatriya, who is vaisya, who is sudra. By symptoms, by characteristics, you'll know. Similarly, if you find a man knows Krsna, you must accept him: "He is a brahmana." He's a brahmana. Brahma janati iti brahmana. So the miser, the opposite word is liberal or brahmana. Miser knows his self-interest, "How much nice foodstuff I have got to eat daily." That's all. And liberal, "How much Krsna prasada I am distributing to the world." Liberal. A miser is thinking, "How much nice dishes I have eaten today. How much I have satisfied my tongue. Never mind I go to hell. Let me eat this, that, so many nice things. Let me satisfy my tongue." "Oh, for your tongue so many animals are being sacrificed, killed?" "Never mind. I want to satisfy my tongue." Miser. But Krsna conscious person, he does not satisfy tongue. He wants to satisfy Krsna, and whatever remnants, foodstuff, is there, he eats. That's all. He's liberal. These are the distinction between miser and liberal. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: 50: "A man engaged in devotional service rids himself of both good and bad actions even in this life. Therefore strive for this yoga, O Arjuna, which is the art of all work [Bg. 2.50]." 51: "The wise, engaged in devotional service, take refuge in the Lord and free themselves from the cycle of birth and death by renouncing the fruits of action in the material world [Bg. 2.51]."

Prabhupada: Yes. There is purport?

Tamala Krsna: No. There's a little more to that sloka.

Prabhupada: All right. Finish.

Tamala Krsna: "In this way they can attain that state beyond all miseries."

Prabhupada: Read it again.

Tamala Krsna: "The wise, engaged in devotional service, take refuge in the Lord and free themselves from the cycle of birth and death by renouncing the fruits of action in the material world. In this way they can attain that state beyond all miseries."

Prabhupada: How easy it is. You take to Krsna consciousness, you act in Krsna consciousness, you overcome the cycle of birth and death. And as soon as you overcome the cycle of birth and death, you overcome all miseries. Because birth and death means this material body. The living entity, spirit soul, has no birth and death. And anyone who possesses this material body has to undergo the threefold miseries of the material world. A similar passage is there in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. The other day, as I was speaking to you, nunam pramattah kurute vikarma [SB 5.5.4]. All these people, they are acting in a way which they ought not to have done. Nunam pramattah. But they are acting as madmen. Why? Yad indriya-pritaya, for satisfaction of the senses. Nunam pramattah kurute vikarma yad indriya-pritaya aprnoti na sadhu manye [SB 5.5.4]. This is not good. Because he does not know that he has achieved this material body by working in that way in his previous life. Again he is working in that way. So he'll have to accept again this material body, therefore he's miser. He's not properly utilizing. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: 52: "When your intelligence has passed out of the dense forest of delusion, you will become indifferent to all that has been heard and all that is to be heard [Bg. 2.52]." Purport: "There are many good examples in the lives of the great devotees of the Lord, of those who became indifferent to the rituals of the Vedas simply by devotional service to the Lord. When a person factually understands Krsna and one's relationship with Krsna, one naturally becomes completely indifferent to the rituals of fruitive activities even though he may be an experienced brahmana. Sri Madhavendra Puri, a great devotee and acarya in the line of devotees, says, ‘O Lord, in my prayers three times a day, all glories to You. Bathing, I offer my obeisances unto You. O demigods, O forefathers, please excuse me for my inability to offer you my respects. Now wherever I sit I am able to remember the great descendant of the Yadu dynasty, Krsna, the enemy of Kamsa, and therefore I can get myself free from all sinful bondage. I think this is sufficient for me.' "

Prabhupada: This is a prayer by Madhavendra Puri. (chuckling) He says that "I am not going to do anything except serving Krsna." This Madhavendra Puri was the grand–spiritual master of Lord Caitanya. Madhavendra Puri's disciple Isvara Puri, and Isvara Puri was accepted as spiritual master of Lord Caitanya. Nobody can become a spiritual master of the Supreme Lord, but in order to teach us that even the Lord, He also accepted a spiritual master. That is the system. Mahajano yena gatah sa panthah [Cc. Madhya 17.186]. Unless He shows us the way, people will say, "Oh, Lord Caitanya did not accept any spiritual master." They can give example. But therefore Krsna also accepted spiritual master. This is the system. One has to. Tad vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet [MU 1.2.12]. One must accept a spiritual master if he at all wants to know the spiritual science. Without that, it is not possible. Krsna science, Krsna consciousness, cannot be developed without the assistance of a bona fide representative of Krsna. Naisam matis tavad urukramanghrim. There are very, very, many, many instances. What is that? Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "The Vedic rites and rituals are imperative for the beginning of human life."

Prabhupada: Yes. Dharmena hina pasubhih samana. Vedic rituals, every human society has got some scriptures and some ritualistic activities. Never mind whether Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jews, they have. That is the symptom of human civilization. If you have no religion, if you have no standing, then you are animal. Never mind you accept this religion or that religion, it doesn't matter. But you must have a religion. Otherwise a man is animal. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "Comprehending all kinds of prayer three times a day, taking a bath early in the morning, offering respects to the forefathers, etc. But when one is fully in Krsna consciousness and is engaged in His transcendental loving service, one becomes indifferent to all these regulative principles because he has already attained perfection of life. If one can reach the platform of understanding by service to the Supreme Lord Krsna, he has no longer the duty to execute the different types of penances and sacrifices recommended in the revealed scriptures."

Prabhupada: Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, when He started this movement, He preached that simply by chanting you'll get all perfection, and the brahmanas of Navadvipa, they rebelled against Him, that "This boy..." He was boy of twenty years or less than that. This boy is preaching something against the Vedic religious system. So in other words, they were afraid of their priestly profession. Because if everyone takes to simply chanting Hare Krsna and forgets all ritualistic activities, then how they will live? They were priestly class, they were getting some money by their followers. But Caitanya Mahaprabhu had no such desire. He simplified the whole thing. Harer nama eva kevalam [Cc. Adi 17.21]. Simply chant Hare Krsna and you become elevated to the highest platform. Actually it is so. You can see from the behavior of our students. They simply took this chanting, now see their behavior, see their character. It will automatically. That is the result. Iha haite sarva-siddhi haibe tomara. Lord Caitanya said, every kind of, all kinds of perfection will follow. Simply you begin chanting Hare Krsna sincerely. Yes. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "And similarly, if one has not understood that the purpose of the Vedas is to reach Krsna and simply engages in the rituals, then he is uselessly wasting time in such engagements. Persons in Krsna consciousness transcend the limit of sabda-brahma."

Prabhupada: Sabda-brahma, sound vibration. Sound-brahma, Brahman in sound. Just like Brahman means all-pervading. All-pervading. So the sound is all-pervading. You'll find sound... Beginning from the sky to the earth, you'll find sound, all-pervading. In the sky, there is sound. You have got experience. In the fire there is sound, in the air there is sound, in the earth there is sound, every metal, wood. You take everything, there is sound. So Brahman means all-pervading. But this transcendental sound... Just like your radio message, television sound, they cannot go beyond this earthly planet, at most. But there is sound which can penetrate the whole universe and go to the spiritual world. Sound is all-pervading, that is a fact, scientific fact. If that sound is potent, then it can penetrate even this material sky and go to the spiritual sky and go to Krsna directly. That sound is Hare Krsna. Golokera prema-dhana, hari-nama-sankirtana, rati na janmilo kene taya. I've given that. He has translated very nice, Hayagriva. Golokera prema-dhana. This is descended from the spiritual platform, Goloka Vrndavana, hari-nama-sankirtana, this Hare Krsna. Rati na janmilo kene taya. "I have no attachment for these things." I have got attachment for radio sound, or television sound, so many sound, but I have no attachment for the supreme sound which is coming down from the Goloka Vrndavana. Golokera prema-dhana, hari-nama-sankirtana, rati na janmilo kene... samsara-bisanale, diba-nisi hiya jwale. "In this material world, I am, my heart is always burning on account of so many miseries." Juraite na koinu upaya. "But I could not find out the way how to get out of it. This sound vibration will get you out from the blazing fire of this material condition. This sound, harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam [Cc. Adi 17.21]. Chant always, everything will be perfectly done." Yes. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: 53. Oh, I'll finish this sentence. "Persons in Krsna consciousness transcend the limit of sabda-brahma or the range of the Vedas and Upanisads." 53: "When your mind is no longer disturbed by the flowery language of the Vedas and when it remains fixed in the trance of self-realization, then you will have attained the divine consciousness [Bg. 2.53]." 54: "Arjuna said, ‘What are the symptoms of one whose consciousness is thus merged in transcendence? How does he speak and what is his language? How does he sit and how does he walk?' " [Bg. 2.54]

Prabhupada: This is very important thing. The symptoms, the characteristics, of Krsna conscious persons, they are described there, item by item.

Tamala Krsna: "The Blessed Lord said, ‘O Partha, when a man gives up...' "

Prabhupada: This is the result of talks between Arjuna and Krsna. Arjuna is putting in such a way, and Krsna is answering. That means it is meant for all conditioned souls. Unless Arjuna would have asked all these questions, how we could have received such transcendental message? Therefore it was necessary that Arjuna would play the part of an ordinary conditioned soul. Actually he was not. He's simply playing the part in order to eschew transcendental message. Because Krsna has spoken, everyone will take it as authorized. So Krsna is now speaking. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "The Blessed Lord said, ‘O Partha, when a man gives up all varieties of sense desire which arise of invention, and when his mind finds satisfaction in the self alone, then he is said to be in pure transcendental consciousness.' "

Prabhupada: Now if one comes to the understanding, enlightenment, this is the beginning of enlightenment -- self-understanding, that "I am part and parcel of Krsna. I do not belong to this material world. I am not part and parcel of this country, this world, or this material atmosphere, but I am part and parcel of the Supreme." This is enlightenment. Read it again.

Tamala Krsna: "The Blessed Lord said, ‘O Partha, when a man gives up all varieties of sense enjoyment...' " [Bg. 2.55]

Prabhupada: Now if you are interested with so many varieties, material varieties... Suppose I belong to this country, then I have got so much duty, so many duties. If I belong to this world, if I belong to the human society, if I belong to this and that. But if you simply belong to Krsna, that is enlightenment. Yes, go on.

Tamala Krsna: "...and when his mind finds satisfaction in the self alone, then he is said to be in pure transcendental consciousness." 56: "One who is not disturbed in spite of the threefold miseries, who is not elated when there is happiness and who is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage of steady mind [Bg. 2.56]."

Prabhupada: Now, if I do not identify myself with this body, if this knowledge is fixed up, then... The miserable condition of this material world is due to this body, but if I don't identify with this body, then what relationship I have got with all this miseries? This is theoretical knowledge, of course, but one has to practice. But this is a fact. Just like for the time being, if there is any pain in the body... I feel pain because I am absorbed in this bodily concept of life, but actually, I am not this body. That is a fact. It is due to my absorption of bodily concept of life; therefore I feel. The more I become enlightened, the more I shall not be affected by all these miseries. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: Purport: "The word muni means one who can agitate his mind in various ways for mental speculation without coming to a factual conclusion."

Prabhupada: Mental speculators are called muni. There are so many munis. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "It is said that every muni has a different angle of vision, and unless one muni is different in view from another, he cannot be called a muni in the strict sense of the term. But a sthita-dhir muni, the kind mentioned herein by the Lord is different from an ordinary muni. The sthita-dhir muni is always in Krsna consciousness for he has finished all his business with creative speculation. He is called prasanta-nihsesa-mano-rathantara, or one who has surpassed the stage of mental speculation and has come to the conclusion that Lord Sir Krsna, Vasudeva, is everything. He is called a muni fixed in mind. Such a fully Krsna conscious person is not at all disturbed by the onslaughts of the threefold miseries, those due to nature, to other beings, and to the frailties of one's own body. Such a muni accepts all misery as the mercy of the Lord, thinking himself only worthy of more trouble due to his past misdeeds, and sees that his miseries, by the grace of the Lord, are minimized to the lowest. Similarly, when he is happy, he gives credit to the Lord, thinking himself unworthy of that happiness. He realizes that it is due only to the Lord's grace that he is in such a comfortable condition and thus able to render better service to the Lord. And for the service of the Lord..."

Prabhupada: You mark this. When there is miseries, a Krsna conscious person takes the responsibility himself, and when there is happiness, it is due to Krsna. But the materialistic person is just the opposite. When he is in miseries, he'll say, "Oh, God has put me into such miseries." And when he's happiness, his friend says, "Oh, you are now well-to-do." "Yes, you do not know how much I have worked hard." When he's happiness, he takes the credit for himself, and when he's in distress, he gives the discredit to Krsna. "Oh, Krsna has put me into such miserable..." But a Krsna conscious person, when he's in distress, he'll say, "Yes, due to my misdeeds I should have suffered a hundred times more than this distress, but Krsna is so kind, He has given me little. That's all." And when he's happiness, "Oh, it is all given by Krsna. Therefore all the opulence should be utilized for Krsna's service." This is the difference. He's asking, Arjuna is asking, what are the symptoms of Krsna conscious person. Sthita-prajna. Sthita-prajna means steadfast in intelligence. So these are the difference. I have read one speech, Chicago speech by late Vivekananda Swami. He's talking to the audience that "You work so hard, why you give credit to God?" You see? If you find his Chicago speech, you'll see. Go on.

Tamala Krsna: "And for the service of the Lord he is always daring and active and is not influenced by attachment or detachment. Attachment means accepting things for one's own sense gratification, and detachment is the absence of such sensual attachment. But one fixed in Krsna consciousness has neither attachment or detachment because his life is dedicated in the service of the Lord. Consequently he is not at all angry even when his attempts are unsuccessful. A Krsna conscious person is always steady in his determination." 57: "He who is without affection either for good or evil is firmly fixed in perfect knowledge [Bg. 2.57]." Purport: "There is always some upheaval in the material world which may be good or evil. One who is not agitated by such material upheavals, who is without affection for the good or evil, is to be understood as fixed in Krsna consciousness. As long as one is in the material world, there is always the possibility of good and evil because this world is full of duality. But one who is fixed in Krsna consciousness is not affected by good and evil because he is simply concerned with Krsna, who is all-good absolute. Such consciousness in Krsna situates one in the perfect transcendental position called, technically, samadhi." 58: "One who is able to withdraw his senses from sense objects as the tortoise draws his limbs within the shell is to be understood as truly situated in knowledge [Bg. 2.58]." 59: "The embodied soul may be restricted from sense enjoyment though the taste for sense objects remains, but ceasing such engagements by experiencing a higher taste, he is fixed in consciousness [Bg. 2.59]." 60: "The senses are so strong and impetuous, O Arjuna, that they forcibly carry away the mind even of the man of discrimination who is endeavoring to control them [Bg. 2.60]." 61: "One who restrains his senses and fixes his consciousness upon Me is known as a man of steady intelligence [Bg. 2.61]."

Prabhupada: This is the conclusion of all symptoms. There are others also?

Tamala Krsna: One more.

Prabhupada: Oh, yes. Read it.

Tamala Krsna: 62: "While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises [Bg. 2.62]." Oh, a new (indistinct). There's a purport.

Prabhupada: Stop there. So if there is any question you can discuss.

Virabhadra: If some of these questions might be very stupid, and if any of them are, then just say they're stupid. Then I can ask Visnujana. The first one is, if you said, "Give me lots of money for Krsna," are you a miser? Is that a stupid question? Is that a stupid question?

Prabhupada: Yes. You first of all know who is miser and who is liberal. Do you know that?

Virabhadra: Miser is the one who wants all the money for himself and none of the money for Krsna.

Prabhupada: Yes. If you want money for Krsna then you are not miser. Just like you are working for this temple, and you ask Tamala Krsna, "Tamala Krsna Prabhu, please give me hundred dollars. I have to spend for this purpose." Is that bad? (laughter)

Virabhadra: If it's for Krsna it's all right.

Prabhupada: Yes.

Virabhadra: Then my second question was: When Krsna came here, did He take a spiritual master too?

Prabhupada: Yes.

Virabhadra: He did?

Prabhupada: Yes. He not only took, accepted spiritual master, but He took all the risk to go into the jungle to bring wood for the spiritual master. Fuel wood. One day it so happened the whole day they were in the forest, and Sudama Vipra and He, they both of them were entrapped. There was heavy rain, they could not come out, and the whole night they remained within the forest. So not that because He was Krsna, He did not accept any spiritual master or work for him. He took so much risk. He went to the forest. Otherwise who will accept spiritual master if He does not show us the way? He comes to teach us. Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati [Bg. 4.7]. "When there is discrepancies in the discharge of Vedic rules and, abhyutthanam adharmasya, and irreligious principles are too much rampant, then I appear." That is stated. So He teaches us how to acquire knowledge, how to behave. That is Krsna, the purpose of His mission. He does not act any way which will be followed by somebody and he'll go to hell. No.

Virabhadra: My third question is when you had that heart attack, did you feel the pain?

Prabhupada: Yes.

Virabhadra: You felt the pain?

Prabhupada: Yes. Why shall I not?

Virabhadra: Well, because you're a pure devotee. I mean you're pure, so you don't feel pain.
Prabhupada: Huh?

Virabhadra: I thought you said in Bhagavad-gita a pure devotee wouldn't feel pain because he's always chanting and Krsna will always protect him.

Prabhupada: Yes. Pain was there, but it was not too much. The boys, the disciples, were chanting and I was chanting, so there was not so much. It was not so much painful. That is already explained. When there is distress, the devotee takes it that "I am suffering for my past deeds, but I should have died at this moment, but Krsna is simply giving me a little pain, that's all." Actually, that was the thing. That day I should have... The heart attack was very severe. I should have died. Nobody survives such heart attack. But Krsna saved me. That's all.

Virabhadra: And my fourth and last question is, are you in this world?

Prabhupada: Hm? (laughter)

Virabhadra: Are you in this world?

Prabhupada: I am?

Virabhadra: Are you in this world? I mean you, are you...?

Prabhupada: I'm not in this world, yes.

Virabhadra: You're not in this world.

Prabhupada: No.

Jaya-gopala: I thought I heard it said that you are in this world without being a part of it. You are in the world without being a part of it, being a part of it, like the lotus flower which floats on the water.

Prabhupada: Yes, that is the way. That is the way of understanding. Just like I am in America. It is very easy to understand. I am not adopting any ways of life as the Americans do. So I am not in America. Not only myself, all my disciples who are following me, they are also not Americans. They're different from American behavior, American ways of life. In that sense I'm not in America. I am in Vrndavana because wherever I go in my apartment or in my temple I live with Krsna and Krsna consciousness. I don't accept any consciousness of America. And I teach my disciples also to take to that consciousness. So one who takes to that consciousness, he is also not in America, not in this world. It is... I have given this example many times. Just like a king and a bug is sitting on the same throne. The bug is biting and the king is ruling. It is not that because the bug is there on the throne, he is king, or the king is sitting with the bug, he is bug. Why this difference? Difference of consciousness. The king knows his duty. He is working in his duty; therefore he's king. And the bug knows his business, to bite; therefore he's bug. But sitting on the same place. But because due to different consciousness, one is bug, one is king. So if you take to Krsna consciousness and if you remain in Krsna consciousness, you don't belong to this world. You are no more bug, you are king. Change this consciousness. Even apparently you may seem to remain with the bug, you are no more bug. Is it clear?

Virabhadra: Yes. What's the difference? I've heard terms like incarnation, expansion, and plenary expansion, like Krsna incarnates Himself, expands Himself...

Prabhupada: Yes. Just as a person is in family, he is father, in office, he is boss, and in some other place, he's something else. But the same man. But because we are materially conditioned, when I am in the office, I'm not in my home. While I am acting as boss in my office, I cannot act as father with children at home. I am absent. This is due to my material condition. But Krsna, being full spiritual, He can remain in His abode, Goloka Vrndavana, at the same time, He can remain everywhere. That is expansion. Just like Krsna is living within your heart. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. The Supreme Lord is staying in everyone's heart. In the Brahma-samhita it is stated, goloka eva nivasaty akhilatma-bhutah [Bs. 5.37]. This is spiritual position, that even though He is in His abode permanently, He can remain in everyone's heart, all over the creation. Not only in the heart, but within every atom also. This is His expansion, plenary expansion. He expands... We are also His expansion. We living entities, we are also His expansion. Nothing exists without being Krsna. That is explained in the Ninth Chapter. Maya tatam idam sarvam. "I have expanded in all different atmosphere." Sarvam. Mat-sthani sarva-bhutani [Bg. 9.4]. "Everything existing in Me." Naham tesu avasthitah. "But I am not there. I am not there." You are existing in Krsna, but unless you have Krsna consciousness, Krsna is not in you. But you are existing in Krsna. You cannot exist without Krsna. So therefore Krsna is everywhere, Krsna is in everything. We have to develop that consciousness. That will make me happy. Yes?

Jaya-gopala: I've often been told that when you become dvija then we would not incur any more karmic reactions by our actions, but also...

Prabhupada: When you become dvija, twice-born. Twice-born means you come to the point of understanding Krsna consciousness. When you take your birth from your parents, your consciousness is different. Just like the child. His consciousness is different, but when he's grown-up, if he takes to knowledge, if he tries to understand Krsna, his consciousness is different. So when one takes to Krsna consciousness, that is the beginning of his second birth, dvija.

Jaya-gopala: Well, I've been told then that we can have no more karmic reactions from our actions.

Prabhupada: Yes. If you take to Krsna consciousness, then there is no more reaction of your karma.

Jaya-gopala: I've also been told that if we are serving someone, we can cause them to return to render us some service.

Prabhupada: Well, you must be in service somebody if it is in Krsna consciousness. You cannot create your service independently. Then your service has no reaction. Yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah [Bg. 3.9]. Krsna consciousness means you have no more any personal activity. Because your person is also related to Krsna. How you can act personally? You have to simply act in Krsna consciousness. That is dedication, that is surrender. But you can act individually because you are individual soul; you have got that independence. But that will not make him happy. If he acts individually then he will never be happy. But if you act Krsna consciously, then you will be happy. That is the whole instruction of Bhagavad-gita. And the last instruction, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam... [Bg. 18.66]. "You give up all other activities, as you have manufactured by different consciousness. Just surrender unto Me." Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami... "I shall give you protection from all sinful reaction." Yes?

Madhudvisa: Prabhupada, I have heard from different sources that there is a vibration that is going on in the universe at all times. When they refer to this vibration, are they referring to the om, the sacred om vibration?

Prabhupada: First of all, you should stop to receive any knowledge from any other source.

Madhudvisa: Well, I'm not taking it as knowledge, I'm just...

Prabhupada: No, you said that "I have heard from different sources."

Madhudvisa: From people on the street that I've talked to.

Prabhupada: Yes. So what is the question?

Madhudvisa: They talk about the vibration that's going on in the universe at, uh, at all times, and they talk about vibrating with this vibration, and uttering this vibration, and that this is what they're after.

Prabhupada: Yes, any vibration, there is sound. So there is... The sound is heard omkara. That is also accepted in the Bhagavad-gita. So there is no objection accepting this...

Madhudvisa: They talk about this as the ultimate stage of...

Prabhupada: Then you have to accept their statement, not the Bhagavad-gita. Therefore I say that you don't hear from all sources. Because they have said that that is the ultimate, would you accept that?

Madhudvisa: No, I don't accept. I just want to know if it is the om vibration that they're referring to.

Prabhupada: Om vibration is there. Om is also representation of Krsna. That is also accepted. But that is not ultimate. Ultimate is Krsna. Just like there is some vibration, some source. You go, go, proceed, wherefrom this vibration is coming? If you find whether here is a horn. From this..., or conchshell. Here is vibration. So that, unless you reach that point... That is the ultimate. Not that vibration. Suppose I am vibrating conchshell. There is a huge sound. But is that vibration ultimate? Or the conchshell wherefrom the vibration is emanating, the conchshell is ultimate. The conchshell sound is going beyond this temple. Does it mean that conchshell sound is bigger than the conchshell? The vibration of the conchshell, apparently it seems to be very great, but does it mean it is great? The great is the conchshell wherefrom the vibration is coming. That is the ultimate source. So omkara vibration is all over the universe, that's all right; but wherefrom it is coming? That you have to search out. When you search out you'll find Krsna. Therefore Krsna is the ultimate. Not the vibration. Is that clear? Yes. The same example. The sunshine, all over the universe it is spread. Does it make it is greater than the sun? The sun is the source of the sunshine. So similarly, brahmano hi pratisthaham, "I am the source of Brahman, the effulgence." That's a fact. Brahman is not greater than Krsna. Krsna is greater than Brahman. Mattah parataro nasti. You will find in the Bhagavad-gita, "There is no more greater truth than Me." These people, they cannot understand; less intelligent. The same example. Because they see that the sunshine is spreading all over the universe, therefore it is more important, greater than the sun planet. But actually it is not. The simple truth. And if you go into the sun planet you will find Vivasvan the sun-god is there. The sun planet is so dazzling due to his presence. Similarly, with all impersonal conception, when you reach Krsna, then you reach to the goal. There are so many crude examples. Just like your country. There are so many departmental government businesses going on. This department, that department, all over the country. The whole thing is concentrate in the President. How can I deny it? The everything is going on on the finger's end of the President. This is a crude example. Similarly, ultimately, unless there is the Supreme Person on the background... That, Hayagriva has brought one book, Evidence of God. So the many scientists they have written in that book, and they have agreed that if God is there, He must be person. He must be person. Is not that, Hayagriva?

Hayagriva: Yes.

Prabhupada: Yes. Very big, big scientists, astronomers, mathematicians, they have written in that book, Evidence of Existence of God. And they have all agreed that if there is God at all, He must be person. He cannot be imperson. And God says personally, "There is no greater truth than Me. Arjuna, there is no greater truth than Me." Aham sarvasya prabhavah [Bg. 10.8], "I am the source of all energy." So God says, Arjuna says, Vyasa says, Narada says; why should we hear a street man? (laughter) (Prabhupada laughs) A man in the street, is he greater than Narada? Is he greater than Vyasa? He is greater than Krsna? Then why should I hear him? You should ask him, "Please, keep your theory with you. We are greater authority than you." Yes. Yes?

Jaya-gopala: If we are on the street and collecting money and we are thinking, "Oh, I am a very good collector; I am collecting so nicely."

Prabhupada: Yes, Yes. You are very good collector for Krsna.

Jaya-gopala: But if we...

Prabhupada: Yes, yes, you should be proud, you should feel proud: "I am working for Krsna very nicely." (laughter) We don't reject anything. Even this pride, yes. "I am greater servant of Krsna. Yes, I am proud." That pride is nice. Yes?

Guest or devotee: This might be a stupid question, but like, uh...

Prabhupada: Well we are all stupids. (laughter) So questions must be stupid.

Guest/Devotee: In yoga I've heard a lot about...

Prabhupada: Yes, because we are stupids we must have... Just like he says, "I have heard in the street." You see? We have to hear everything from Krsna, then it is perfect.

Guest/Devotee: Well, uh, sometimes I feel, uh, what they call cakras. Like I feel very light over here, and I feel something swirling over here that I think they call the thousand-petalled lotus. Is this just my imagination, or are these things real?

Prabhupada: Yes, it is imagination. If you just open your skull, you will find no lotus there. (laughter) So it is your imagination, that's all. These imaginations are prescribed for persons who are too much absorbed in this bodily concept of life. "Here is a lotus, here is a manah sarovara, and here is ocean of bliss, here is... Oh, you have to find out." Just to make him concentrate. Just like a naughty boy, to make him stop nonsense doing, "Please sit down here. Stop this all." Our proposition, "I am not this body. Even there is lotus, I don't care for it." Do you follow? I am not this body. Even there is lotus, what I have to do with this lotus? My first proposition is I am not this body.

Guest/Devotee: But in, I think, in air, in the Bhagavad-gita somewhere it says that at death you're supposed to, uh, concentrate on the air at the top of the head, which...

Prabhupada: That concentration, in the Bhagavad-gita I do not know where it is, but in the yoga system the concentration is to think of Him, Visnu. Not of the lotus in the head. Yes?

Devotee: Is it true that the Sri Krsna Caitanya mantra is more powerful than the maha-mantra?

Prabhupada: (pause) Sri Krsna Caitanya and maha-mantra the same. Krsna and His name is same. Sri Krsna Caitanya and Hare Krsna is the same. Sri-krsna-caitanya radha-krsna nahe anya. Sri Krsna Caitanya is combination of Hare and Krsna. So there is no difference. They are all the same. But because we receive through the mercy of Sri Krsna Caitanya, Sri Krsna Caitanya has appeared to deliver us this maha-mantra; therefore, we first of all pray Sri Krsna Caitanya that "Give us strength to receive Hare Krsna." Therefore we chant sri-krsna-caitanya prabhu nityananda... Just like you offer your respect to the spiritual master first. That does not mean that spiritual master is greater than Krsna. But the spiritual master is mercy manifestation of Krsna; therefore sastra says that you should offer him the same respect as to Krsna. But by that way, a spiritual master does not think that "I have become greater than Krsna." Then he is a Mayavadi, or equal to... (end)
