Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Santosa: "In a temple of jewels in Vrndavana, underneath a desire tree, Sri Sri Radha-Govinda, served by Their most confidential associates, sit upon an effulgent throne. I offer my humble obeisances unto Them."

Prabhupada:

divyad-vrndaranya-kalpa-drumadhah-
srimad-ratnagara-simhasana-sthau
srimad-radha-srila-govinda-devau
prestalibhih sevyamanau smarami
 [Cc. Adi 1.16]

So, description of Vrndavana, Vrndavana and Radha and Krsna situated there. The Vrndavana... Vana means forest, and vrnda means tulasi. Mostly there are tulasi plants and other trees also, but all the trees are living desire trees, spiritual. They can serve Krsna in any way, desire. They have become trees by their voluntary desire. They're all spiritual beings -- there is no force -- but everyone has got a particular tendency to serve Krsna in a different way. So these trees and plants, they are also living beings. They are not ordinary living beings, but they have decided to serve Krsna by supplying fruits and flowers. They want that service. Everyone has got his particular propensity. So someone is serving as the land there, someone is serving as the throne, someone is serving as the supplying agent of fruits and flowers, someone is engaged in His service as the gopis, confidential servitors. The cows, calves, everything -- they are all different living entities. They are not made of these material things, material body. Ananda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhavitabhis tabhir ya eva nija-rupataya kalabhih [Bs. 5.37]. They are all also expansion of Krsna's pleasure potency. In one sense they are also Krsna; they are not different from Krsna. Sakti-saktimatayor abheda: "The power and the powerful, they are not different, identical." Just like the sun and the sunshine. So in the sun globe there is heat and light, and the sunshine, there is heat and light. So, so far heat and light is concerned, they are one. Similarly, Krsna and Krsna's pleasure potency, ananda-cinmaya, ahladini... It is already described, radha krsna-pranaya-vikrtir hladini-saktir asmat.

So whatever description is there of Vrndavana, that is expansion of Krsna's pleasure potency. They are not different. Therefore in the beginning it is said, divyad, "shining," or "divine," "transcendental." So we should not consider Vrndavana as ordinary forest. Here we have got Vrndavana on this planet. That is also not ordinary forest. The exactly the same Vrndavana as it is Goloka Vrndavana... There is no difference. Therefore Narottama dasa Thakura says that

visaya chadiya kabe suddha ha 'be mana
kabe hama herabo, sri-vrndavana

Visaya chadiya. Our present position is that we are materially diseased, so we have to become free from the material disease. Material disease means sense gratification, and the most formidable disease is sex. This is called material disease. So visaya chadiya. We have to be, become free from the contamination of visaya, material enjoyment. This is the statement of Narottama dasa Thakura.

visaya chadiya kabe suddha ha 'be mana
kabe hama herabo sri-vrndavana

"When my mind will be cleansed of all material desires, then I shall be able to see what is Vrndavana." It is very difficult to see Vrndavana with material desires. Bhakti means the first qualification is to become free from all material desires. Sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam.

sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam
tat-paratvena nirmalam
hrsikena hrsikesa-
sevanam bhaktir ucyate
 [Cc. Madhya 19.170]

anyabhilasita-sunyam
jnana-karmady-anavrtam
anukulyena krsnanu-
silanam bhaktir uttama
 [Brs. 1.1.11]

You know all these definition of bhakti given in our Nectar of Devotion. So spiritual life means free from material desires. And material desires mean just to hanker after sense gratification. This is material desire. When we have no more desire for sense gratification, then we should think that we are on the spiritual platform.

So this description of Vrndavana is spiritually described; therefore in the beginning the word is used, divyad. Divyad means divine. Krsna says, janma karma ca me divyam [Bg. 4.9]. This is not ordinary material thing. So desire tree also described in the Brahma-samhita: Cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vrksa [Bs. 5.29] -- the same kalpa-vrksa-laksavrtesu surabhir abhipalayantam, laksmi-sahasra-sata-sambhrama-sevyamanam. This laksmi-sahasra-sata-sevyamanam is described here as presthalibhih sevyamanau. Prestha-alibhih. Prestha means very dear, and ali means gopis, associates of Radharani, friends. So they are all Laksmis, goddess of fortune. Laksmi... You have heard the name Laksmi, Laksmi-Narayana, associates of Narayana. Krsna is Narayana. So all these gopis, they are expansion of Srimati Radharani, the original Laksmi. This is spiritual world. It is not impersonal, neither nirakara, formless. Everything form, but that form is different from this form. That form is sat-cid-ananda form -- eternal, full of bliss, full of knowledge. This is not this material form. When we speak of formless, that means without any material form. Formless does not mean Krsna and His expansion, they are formless. They are not of material form. Aprakrta, not material. Here everything is prakrta. It is not, neither, eternal nor blissful nor full of knowledge. It is temporary, full of ignorance and always miserable, this form. We can understand it.

So that is just opposite. This form is temporary. Everyone knows this form will be finished. Antavanta ime deha [Bg. 2.18], Krsna says. This body is antavat. Antavat means it will be finished. It grew at a certain date, and it will increase, it will stay, then it will dwindle, then it will produce some by-products and then vanish. This is called sad-vikara, six kinds of changes of the material body. Of the spiritual body there is no such change. That is the difference between spiritual body and material body. Therefore it is called sat. Sat means eternal; there is no change. Just like Krsna. His body is sac-cid-ananda; therefore He never grows old. You'll never find a picture of Krsna that He has grown old. No. There is no change. Advaitam acyutam anadim ananta-rupam adyam purana-purusam [Bs. 5.33]. Purana-purusam means the oldest person. Because Krsna is the origin of everything... Sometimes they consider, "Because God is very old, therefore He must have big, big beard and..." That is imagination. Here you find the real description of God: advaitam acyutam anadim ananta-rupam adyam [Bs. 5.33], "Original," Purana-purusam, "the oldest of all," nava-yauvanam ca, "but His bodily feature is just like a fresh young man." That is Krsna. You'll never find Krsna... Krsna, when He was in the battlefield of Kuruksetra, He was a great-grandfather, but you'll find a young boy. That is Krsna. So that is eternal.

Now our body is not sat. Krsna's body is sat, cid, ananda. Our, this material body -- asat. And because we have got... Asat means temporary, that will not exist. And because we have accepted this material body, therefore we are full of anxiety. Ultimately, what is our anxiety? We are always trying to... This is called struggle for existence, survival of the fittest. So we are trying to become the fittest, to exist. But that is not possible in this body. That is not possible, because it is asat; it is not sat. And because the struggle is that we want to exist in this body, therefore there is anxiety. Asad-grahat sada samudvigna-dhiyam asad-grahat [SB 7.5.5]. The sastra says that we are always full of anxieties. Why? Now, asad-grahat: "We have accepted this body, which will not exist." Asad-grahat. These are facts. Study sastra in that way. Why we are full of anxiety? Because we have accepted this body. So our main business is how to get out of this entanglement of this temporary body. The people are not very seriously thinking, neither they have got sufficient knowledge how the temporary body is obtained, how it is changed, another temporary body, and there are 8,400,000 different forms of body, and we are changing one after another. Why this disease? "If I am, my position is, as I understand from Bhagavad-gita, na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20] -- I am not destroyed after the destruction of this body -- why I am in this position that I have to change my body?" Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. This is intelligence. When you come to this intelligence, then athato brahma jijnasa; then the inquiry about spiritual life begins. But unfortunately, we are in such a civilization that we have no time to think of this great dangerous position of changing body one after another, and we have accepted it that "There is no remedy; we have to change or die for good." These theories, this ignorance, is going on, and Krsna consciousness movement is the only movement which is trying to educate man to this standard of knowledge, that he may at least think that "I am not this body, as I understand from the sastras. I am within the body. So how I can become free of this material body?" That is our real problem. Janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi-duhkha-dosanudarsanam [Bg. 13.9].

So if we take it very seriously, then we become gradually advanced and eligible or fit candidate to go into the spiritual world -- divyad-vrndaranya-kalpa-drumadhah. We can go there. That is wanted. Be serious. Don't be misled by the allurement of maya. Remain strong. And then, in this life, you'll be able to become fit candidate to go back to home, back to Godhead. Divyad-vrndaranya-kalpa-drumadhah. You'll also be one of the associates of Krsna, as you desire. Krsna will give you the opportunity to serve Him as you desire. If you want to serve Him as a gopi, you'll get that position. If you want to serve Him as cowherds boyfriend, you'll get that opportunity. If you want to serve Krsna following the footsteps of mother Yasoda, accepting Krsna as your son, you'll get it. Accepting Krsna as your son, Nanda Maharaja following... We have to follow their principles, not that "I shall become Nanda Maharaja" or "I shall become Yasoda," "I shall..." No, that is Mayavada. You have to follow how they are loving Krsna. You have to learn that. Then you'll get the chance of Krsna's association.

Divyad-vrndaranya-kalpa-drumadhah, prestalibhih sevyamanau smarami. The Gaudiya Vaisnava, generally, following the footsteps of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, they aspire to become one of the assistants of the gopis. There are others also who like to be the assistants of the cowherd boys. So our Gosvamis, Rupa Gosvami, sri rupa sanatana bhatta raghunatha, they were all the assistants of the gopis. Gopi-bhava-rasamrtabdhi-lahari-kallola-magnau muhur vande rupa-sanatanau raghu-yugau sri-jiva-gopalakau. These six Gosvamis, rupa sanatana bhatta raghunatha sri jiva gopala bhatta dasa raghunatha, they were all very, very big men, not ordinary men -- ministers, zamindars, learned scholars. They were not ordinary men. And they gave up everything. Tyaktva turnam asesa-mandala-pati-srenim sada tucchavat. Just like Rupa Gosvami, Sanatana Gosvami, he was, they were ministers in the government of Hussain Shah. Raghunatha dasa Gosvami was the only son of his father and uncle, very, very big zamindar, landholder. Twelve lakhs of rupees' income. Five hundred years twelve lakhs -- twelve crores now. He was so rich man. Similarly, Gopala Bhatta Gosvami, Srila Jiva Gosvami, they were very, very learned. Jiva Gosvami was the nephew of Rupa Gosvami, very learned scholar. So either scholar, rich men, big politician -- all of them gave up their occupational, material occupational duty and joined Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in His sankirtana movement. So they were always absorbed in the gopis' activities, always thinking. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was always thinking of Srimati Radharani's activities, and the Gosvamis, they were also thinking of the gopis' activities. Gopis' activities means to assist Srimad-Radharani how to serve Krsna. Prestalibhih sevyamanau. They are always ready.

So in this way there is the description of the spiritual world. You just have a glimpse of the spiritual world, how they are perpetually enjoying blissful life with full knowledge. That is described here. Divyad-vrndaranya-kalpa-drumadhah-srimad ratnagara-simhasana-sthau. There the simhasana, the throne, that is also spiritual. That is not material. Everything spiritual. Simply in different capacity they are serving. There the water is also spiritual. So this spiritual realization, if we get the opportunity fortunate enough, then naturally we shall aspire to enter into the spiritual world. Bhaktivinoda Thakura said, krsnera samsara kara chadi' anacara: "If you want to enter into this association of spiritual kingdom, then practice here the family of Krsna." Just like here we are trying to be family members of Krsna. Here Krsna is sitting, Radha-Madhava is sitting on the throne. He is the enjoyer, and we are trying to serve Him so that He may very nicely enjoy. This is called Krsna family-center, Krsna. Just like in ordinary family the head man is there, and he is the chief man, and all other -- his wife, children, servants, and other friends, associates, even animals, cats, dogs, cows -- everyone is serving the center point, master. Similarly, our Krsna family means Krsna is the master, and He is the supreme enjoyer. Bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram [Bg. 5.29]. And if we understand this point, that Krsna is the center, He is the enjoyer, and we are meant for serving Him for His enjoyment, that is Krsna family.

So we have to, according to the sastric injunction, according to the spiritual master instruction, everywhere we have to organize this Krsna family. So Krsna family does not mean starvation. Krsna family means to enjoy simply. Simply minus this material contamination. Chadi anacara. Anacara. Anacara means not proper behavior. Proper behavior means to remain always pious, and improper behavior means to become impious, sinful. If you become sinful, then you cannot enter into the family of Krsna; that is not possible. Krsna is described in the Bhagavad-gita by Arjuna -- param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan [Bg. 10.12]. Pavitra. Pavitra means pure, completely pure, without any material contamination. So if you want to enter into Krsna's family, then you have to become also completely pure. Otherwise, there is no chance. Completely pure of all material contamination. That can be done when we give up our designations. That can be done. If I think, "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am brahmana," "I am ksatriya," "I am vaisya," "I am white," "I am black," these are upadhi, designations. And if we think like Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, that "I am not this, I am not a brahmana, I am not a ksatriya, I am not a vaisya, I am not a sudra, I am not a brahmacari, I am not a..., not, not this, not this..." Then what you are? Gopi-bhartuh pada-kamalayor' dasa-dasa-dasanudasah: [Cc. Madhya 13.80] "I am simply servant of the servant of Krsna." That is sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. Then you'll remain pure. And as soon as you will think in the bodily concept of life, then you will remain impure. This is the process how to give up this bodily concept of life. That is called sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam.

So in this way, in one life we may practice how to become free from this material contamination and execute devotional service as it is prescribed in the sastra and by the instruction of spiritual master. If we keep ourself pure without material contamination, then we become fit to enter into the family of Krsna. This is the process.

Thank you very much. (end)

No More Wanting

Srimad-Bhagavatam 7.9.54
Vrndavana, April 9, 1976

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Pusta Krsna: "My dear Prahlada, you are very fortunate. You may know from Me that those who are highly elevated, wise persons try to please Me in all different modes of mellows because I am the only person to fulfill the desires of everyone."

Prabhupada:

prinanti hy atha mam dhirah
sarva-bhavena sadhavah
sreyas-kama maha-bhaga
sarvasam asisam patim
 [SB 7.9.54]

So each word in this verse is very important. Prinanti hy atha mam dhirah. Dhira means very intelligent, not crazy, just the opposite of crazy. Dhira. So Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita who is dhira. There are many places. Dhiras tatra na muhyati.

dehino 'smin yatha dehe
kaumaram yauvanam jara
tatha dehantara-praptir
dhiras tatra na muhyati
 [Bg. 2.13]

The simple thing that "I am not this body. I am living within this body, and because I am living within this body, the bodily changes are taking place," this simple thing... A dead child never grows, but a living child grows or changes body. So where is the difficulty to understand that there is something in the body, therefore the body is changing? Dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara [Bg. 2.13]. A child is becoming a baby, baby is becoming a boy, a boy is becoming a young man, young man is becoming a middle aged, a middle-aged man is becoming old man, so the old man, now, after giving up when it is useless, this body, no more workable, then he must get another body, as we have experienced after one stage of life another stage, another body. Where is the difficulty? Therefore Krsna says, dhiras tatra na muhyati. Those who are intelligent, they are not, I mean to say, bewildered. They accept, "Yes, there is." Only the rascals, they cannot understand, the rascals. The opposite number of dhira, the crazy rascals, they cannot understand. Simple thing.

Now, if you study the whole world at the present moment, they do not believe in the soul. They do not believe in the transmigration of the soul from one body to another. Even big, big professors, big, big learned scholars, they do not believe. So therefore you can understand that what is the present population of the world -- all rascals. All rascals. They cannot understand the simple truth, and they are passing on as great scholars, great scientists, great politicians and so on, so on, but all of them rascals. That's all. This is the conclusion. Krsna says, dhiras tatra na muhya... This transmigration of the soul from one body to another, Krsna says, dhiras tatra na muhyati. And here also the same thing, prinanti hy atha mam dhirah sarva-bhavena sadhavah. The spiritual... If you do not understand what is spirit, then where is the question of spiritual life and advancement of spiritual life? There is no question. This is the beginning of spiritual existence..., education, that "I am not this body. I am spirit soul." Aham brahmasmi. They can understand.

So if we are sincerely Krsna conscious, if we believe Krsna... We have to believe. You believe or not believe, the words of Krsna cannot be false. That's a fact. You may be rascal, you do not believe, but those who are dhira, they believe. They believe. If you have love for Krsna... There is no question of love or no love. This is the fact. So one has to become... This is the ultimate goal of life, that one has to become dhira, not like cats and dogs, jumping here and there. That is not human life. That is dog life.

yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke
sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma-ijya-dhih
yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicit
janesu abhijnesu sa eva go-kharah
 [SB 10.84.13]

These classes of men, yasya, whose life is bodily conception... "I am body." "I am a Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am brahmana," "I am Indian," "I am American," "I am..." The whole world is fighting on this because they are all crazy, not dhira. This is the modern civilization. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape. This is a bag of bones and flesh and blood, and they are thinking that they are, they are this body. So wherefrom the living force coming if you are this body? Because as soon as the living force is gone, the body is useless, a lump of matter. So do you think this lump of matter is giving life? But they are not dhira. All rascals, they cannot understand. The word is very important. Dhiras tatra na muhyati. How the rascals will understand? Therefore our Krsna consciousness movement is to educate the rascals, that's all. Simple thing. We challenge everyone that "You are rascal number one. Try to understand Krsna." This is our challenge. Come forward. We say, we challenge, "You are rascal number one. You take education in Krsna consciousness and make your life perfect." This is Krsna consciousness. Nobody is dhira.

So here those who are dhira actually, those who have understood his identity... Ke ami kena amaya jare tapa-traya. This was the question by Sanatana Gosvami to Caitanya Mahaprabhu, that "You asked me to join Your movement. I was minster in Nawab Hussain Shah's government, chief minister. Now I have... On Your word I have given up. So You have kindly brought me from this hellish condition, simply politics and pounds, shilling, pence. So it is a great mercy for me of Your Lordship. But my first question is ke ami: 'What I am?' " This is the first question. It must be... Jijnasuh sreya uttamam. Here the same word is used, sreyas-kamah. Sreyas-kamah. Anyone who is dhira, he'll inquire about the ultimate goal of life, sreyas. There are two things, sreyas and preyas. Preyas means immediately very nice. Suppose somebody says that "Oh, there is a very nice dancing girl singing, and why you are here, sankirtana? What you'll enjoy? Come here. There's a very nice girl." That is preyas. Preyas means immediately very pleasing. And one comes here, that is sreyas, means it will do him ultimately good. So there are two things, way. Those who are foolish persons, they are after sreyas..., er, preyas, immediately palatable. And those who are intelligent, dhira, they are after sreyas. Sreyas-kamah. Without becoming sreyas-kamah, nobody can be Krsna conscious. If one is preyas-kamah, if one wants to enjoy this material world, sense gratification, he cannot become Krsna conscious. That is not possible. Only sreyas-kamah.

So how to... "Yes, I am sreyas-kamah. I... Yes, I want what is the ultimate goal of life. Yes." That is... Just like Sanatana Gosvami went to Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This is a fact. So sastra also says, tasmad gurum prapadyeta jijnasuh sreya uttamam [SB 11.3.21]. The sreyas-kamah. If you are actually serious about the ultimate goal of life, then you approach a guru. Tasmad gurum prapadyeta jijnasuh. If you are actually inquisitive to understand what is sreyas, that is sreyas-kamah. kamah means desiring, and sreyas means ultimate good. Not preyas-kamah. If you want to enjoy these material facilities, then you can go to such kind of men, such kind of men, and... If you want to learn drinking, so go to a club where drinking is very encouraged. Preyas-kamah. If you want to enjoy sex, go to the club where prostitutes are available. That is preyas-kamah. But if you want to reach the goal of life, then go to Krsna conscious movement. There are two kinds of men, sreyas-kamah, preyas-kamah, so two things are there. So this Krsna consciousness movement is for the sreyas-kamah. And who becomes sreyas-kamah? Maha-bhaga, with great fortune. Not ordinary person. Unfortunate or misfortunate, they cannot understand Krsna consciousness. Maha-bhaga. Very, very great fortunate person.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu confirms this in His teaching to Rupa Gosvami. He said,

ei rupe brahmanda bhramite kono bhagyavan jiva
guru-krsna-krpaya paya bhakti-lata-bija
 [Cc. Madhya 19.151]

They are traveling, wandering. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27]. Karanam guna sango 'sya sad-asad janma-yonisu [Bg. 13.22]. These rascals who are not dhira, they are thinking independent, rascals. Not a single moment you are independent. You are controlled. Even if we are dropping our eyelids, there is regulative principles. Some demigod is controlling. Breathing. Breathing, there is control. You can breathe for so many years, that's all, and live. And when the breathing is finished, then you are not controller. The great scientists, they are begin oxygen gas, injection. Can you increase the period breathing for a moment? No. Controlled. Controlled. You cannot increase your breathing even for a moment. So the yogis, they try to save the breathing. That is yogic process. Samadhi. They practice breathing control so that without breathing they can remain. Recaka, kumbhaka yoga, so they can increase their life. Suppose I shall live for eighty years or hundred years. There is breathing period. If I can save breathing, then I can live more. Just like your bank balance. If you don't spend it, your balance is all right. But you spend it, then the balance will be zero some day. Similarly, the yogic process is to control the breathing. And the breathing is lost in large quantities when there is sex life. (breathes rapidly and loudly-laughter) Finished. So control the breathing, it requires celibacy, no sex life. Yoga-indriya-samyamah. That is called yoga, not that showing some gymnastic and smoking and yoga system. This is going on. Your country is cheated by so many rascals, yogis. You know it very well. The one great yogi was found having sex with his disciple. You know that? Who is that?

Pusta Krsna: Saccidananda.

Prabhupada: Yes. So they go for women and money because you are fooled. You are yogi, and they show some gymnastic, that's all. But real yoga system is yoga indriya-samyamah, how to control the indriyas, especially the mind. In this way one can become advanced, dhira. That is yoga system. It is an artificial means to become dhira, because without becoming dhira there is no question of advancing in spiritual life. That is not possible.

So this dhira, who can...? Maha-bhaga. Maha-bhaga, very, very great fortunate person. How he becomes dhira? Ei rupe brahmanda bhramite kono bhagyavan -- this maha-bhaga-kono bhagyavan jiva, guru-krsna-krpaya paya bhakti-lata-bija [Cc. Madhya 19.151]. By the blessings of guru... If by his great fortune he comes to a real guru, then he gets the opportunity. That is the test. Ei rupe brahmanda bhramite kono bhagyavan. This opportunity is not for everyone. Kono means somebody. So guru-krsna. If actually one is trying to be dhira, Krsna is there within every... Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. And He advises, guru-krsna... Krsna says, "Now..." Just like Dhruva Maharaja. Dhruva Maharaja, out of his sentiment, went to the forest and to see God. His mother said that "Your, this mental condition cannot be relieved because you want to challenge your father to have the kingdom. So I am poor. I am, although your mother, I cannot request your father. So if it is possible, Krsna can do it." She was Krsna conscious; therefore the child became so nice, Dhruva Maharaja. A child inherits the quality of mother, boy; and girl inherits the quality of father. That is the general rule. So his mother was devotee, so he'll naturally become a devotee by the advice of the mother. He went to the forest. So..., but he had no spiritual master. Out of sentiment went to the forest. But Krsna saw from within that "This child is so serious about Me. Oh, send him Narada. 'Narada, you go there. Initiate him.' " Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya, this mantra was given to Dhruva Maharaja by Narada Muni. So he practiced that mantra, and with austerity, and he saw Krsna. And when he saw Krsna, he's completely pure from all material desires. Anyabhilasita-sunyam [Brs. 1.1.11]. When Krsna wanted to give him benediction, he said, svamin krtartho 'smi varam na yace: [Cc. Madhya 22.42] "I am fully satisfied. I don't want anything." This is Krsna conscious, dhira. No more want. Why want? Here it is said that sreyas-kama maha-bhaga sarvasam asisam patim. Such persons who are dhira and most fortunate and sees Krsna, then what remains to possess? Everything is there. Sarvasam asi... All kinds of benedictions are there, all kinds of. That Krsna will take care.

So these things are very nice, that one has to become dhira, and he can become dhira. Either he was fortunate, or after becoming dhira he is fortunate. Both ways he is fortunate, maha-bhaga. And sreyas-kamah. When one becomes a devotee he does not anymore ask for anything material. Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu teaches, na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagadisa kamaye [Cc. Antya 20.29, Siksastaka 4]. This is dhira. He frankly says that "I don't want riches. I don't want many followers. I don't want nice wife, very beautiful wife." These things are material demands. They are very much fond of worshiping Durga. Why? Dhanam dehi rupavati bharyam dehi yaso dehi. These are material. But Krsna says, "These persons who are asking for material profit from the different demigods, it can be fulfilled. They are fulfilling." But antavat tu phalam tesam tad bhavati alpa-medhasam [Bg. 7.23]. These material gains, they will stay for a few days or few years. Because you are creating another body.

So in this body... Suppose you have got immense wealth, immense men under you, or very beautiful wife. How long you shall enjoy? Immediately, mrtyuh sarva-haras caham: [Bg. 10.34] "You do not like Me. You like these things. All right. At the time of death I shall take away everything -- finish." This is fact. After death where is your beautiful wife? Where is your wealth? Where is your followers? Everything finished. Now according to your karma, you have to accept the body of a dog. Nature's way. Karmana daiva-netrena [SB 3.31.1]. "You have infected doggish mentality. Now you become a dog." This is nature's way. Karanam guna-sango 'sya [Bg. 13.22]. You have simply associated with the tamo-guna, rajo-guna, no sattva-guna, so you have to accept a body, rajas-tamo-guna. Tamo-guna means animal, and rajo-guna means the karmis, and sattva-guna means jnanis. So if one is struggling in this life how to accumulate money, that means rajo-guna. Rajas-tamo-bhava kama-lobhadayas ca ye. We can understand who is under rajo-guna, who is under sattva-guna, who is...

urdhvam gacchanty sattva-sthah
madhye tisthanti rajasa
jaghanya-guna-vrtti-sthah
adho gacchan...
 [Bg. 14.18]

Those who are tamo-guna, they are going-adho gacchanti -- in the animal life. This law is going on. You believe or not believe. If you don't believe, then you are a foolish rascal, and if you believe, then you are dhira. So we shall become a dhira. That is Krsna consciousness movement.

Thank you very much.

Devotees: Jaya! (end)

"Mundane And Divine Dividends"

74/04/09 Bombay, Bhagavad-gita 4.20

Pradyumna: (leads chanting) Translation: "Abandoning all attachment to the results of his activities, ever satisfied and independent, he performs no fruitive action, although engaged in all kinds of undertakings."

Prabhupada:

tyaktva karma-phalasangam
nitya-trpto nirasrayah
karmany abhipravrtto 'pi
naiva kincit karoti sah

First of all I shall translate this into Hindu. Then I shall speak in English. [Hindi] So tyaktva karma-phalasangam. This is very difficult task. Everyone is expected some result for his personal benefit. "How much I have gained by this business?" That is our disease. Everyone. Idam adya maya labdham imam prapsye punar dhanam. All the people of the world, they are struggling hard for existence, simply calculating that "This much I have achieved today, and this much I'll achieve tomorrow. In this way my bank balance will be increased more and more." That is very much explained in the Sixteenth Chapter of Bhagavad-gita, asuri pravrttim ca nivrttim ca jana vidur asura-janah. Asura-janah. (aside:) Just find out the page, Sixteenth Chapter. Asura-janah. [Hindi] Oh, I will continue in English. Asuric means non-devotees. Atheist. Asuric. What is the page?

Pradyumna: Pravrttim ca nivrttim ca jana na vidur asurah, na saucam...

Prabhupada: What is the page number?

Pradyumna: Seven-hundred-thirty-one.

Prabhupada: So in the Sixteenth Chapter it has been explained that what is the difference between atheist and theist, or persons with God consciousness and persons without God consciousness. So it is said,

dvau bhuta-sargau loke 'smin
daiva asura eva ca
daivo vistarasah prokta
asuram partha me srnu

Krsna is explaining that there are two classes of men, loke, in every place or every planet. Some planets are full of asuras. They are called asura-loka. And another place it is said that "Who are the asuras and who are the devas?" Visnu-bhakto bhaved daiva asuras tad-viparyayah. Even a...

There are many demigods. The demigods worshiper are also demons. Only visnu-bhakto bhaved daivah. Visnu-bhakta, those who are devotee of the Supreme Lord Personality of Godhead, daiva. Visnu... Om tad visnoh paramam padam sada pasyanti surayah. This is Rg Veda mantra. Surayah and asurayah. Those who are suraya, deva, demigods, they are simply worshiping, tad visnoh paramam padam, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And asuras tad-viparyayah. And asura means just opposite number. Opposite number means those who are not interested in Visnu worship. Na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum [SB 7.5.31]. They do not know that ultimate goal of life -- to approach Visnu, Lord Visnu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

So asuras, they are engaged for fruitive result. They are working, but they are expecting that "I shall enjoy the result." So that freedom is given to everyone, that "You can work at your responsibility and enjoy or suffer." Just like state has given everyone individuality, everyone freedom, "You act as you like. But if you act criminally, then you will be punished." That you cannot avoid. You have been given freedom, "You act whatever you like," but if you violate the laws of the state, then you are to be punished, criminal.

Similarly, the same thing is there in God's kingdom, that we have been given freedom, we have got little freedom because we are part and parcel of God. Mamaivamso jiva-bhutah [Bg. 15.7]. Krsna says, "All these living entities, they are My minute particles, minute part of My body." Just like father is the part of the body, er, son is the part of body of father, similarly, we are also part and parcel of the transcendental body of Krsna. That is our real identity, spiritual identity.

So therefore Krsna has got freedom, full freedom. So we have got also freedom in minute quantity. That is our position. That freedom, if we use properly, then we are happy, and if we misuse improperly, then we are unhappy. But freedom is there. Krsna says that sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. He is requesting Arjuna that "You just surrender unto Me." He is all-powerful. He can force anyone and everyone to be surrendered to Him, but that He does not do. That is not Krsna's business. He gives freedom. Because Krsna has given you little freedom, so He does not want to interfere with your freedom. Then what is the meaning of giving freedom? That is Krsna's business. Yathecchasi tatha kuru.

Krsna says, Arjuna, "Now I have explained to you the whole Bhagavad-gita. Now what is your decision? You can do whatever you like." Because Krsna, Arjuna's decision was that "I shall not fight. I am not going to kill my brothers and nephews and teachers and grandfather. Krsna, excuse me. I will not fight." So therefore Krsna instructed him the whole Bhagavad-gita science. Now, after hearing Bhagavad-gita, he asked, because he has got the freedom, "Now what is your decision?" Yathecchasi tatha kuru. "Whatever you like, you can do. You can reject My proposal or you can accept." This is freedom. Then Krsna, Arjuna said, "Yes," karisye vacanam tava [Bg. 18.73], "I shall accept Your proposal."

This is Krsna consciousness. Krsna is giving instruction to everyone. This is the way of life, to come gradually to Krsna consciousness. All these things are being explained by Krsna, how to work, how to gradually come to Krsna consciousness. Because Krsna consciousness is the original consciousness. Now it is polluted. Just like originally when the rain falls, it is pure distilled water. And as soon as touches the ground, it become polluted. Immediately dirty.

Similarly, as spirit soul, we are pure. As Krsna is pure... Krsna has explained in the Tenth Chapter, param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan, purusam sasvatam divyam [Bg. 10.12]. So pavitram paramam bhavan. Krsna is param pavitram, complete pure. And we are part and parcel of Krsna; we are also pure. That is our real identity. We are pure, but we have been contaminated by the touch of this material world. The same example: The rainfall, it is pure distilled water, but when it touches the surface of the earth, it becomes dirty. Therefore we see the rivers are full of dirty water. That is not the water is dirty, but because it is mixed up with the dirty dirts of the surface of the globe...

So we fall down when we deny to accept Krsna as the supreme or we try to imitate Krsna, "Why Krsna shall be enjoyer? We shall also enjoy. Why Krsna shall have rasa dance? We shall also [have] rasa dance. Why Krsna will marry sixteen thousand wives? We shall at least sixteen wives." When this competition spirit comes, then we fall down. Fall down means Krsna gives the chance. "All right, you also go. You also dance in the hotel, ball dance, and he complicated[?]." Because he does not know what is rasa dance, he imitates ball dance. So everything, what is going on in this material world, it is imitation of Krsna's activities. Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. The Vedanta-sutra says. Everything that is going on, it is simply generated from that original. So... But it is contaminated.

Because in the in touch with the material three qualities. Some of them are goodness, some of them are passion and some of them are ignorance. The example is given: Just like fire, big fire, and the sparks are coming out from the fire. That is natural. Similarly, the big fire is Krsna, and we are small sparks. So the sparks sometimes fall down from the original fire, "phut! phut!" falls down. So falls down... When the fire sparks falls down on the dry grass, it creates fire. And if it is fallen down on the land, it keeps the fiery element for some time. But if it falls down on the water, immediately it is extinguished.

Similarly, when we fall down from Krsna's association, the fire, big fire and the sparks, if we be in touch with the modes of goodness, then we keep some Krsna consciousness. Just like the brahmanas. The quality of satyam samo damas titiksa. And if we fall down on the ground, then we keep sometimes the fiery quality. That is passion. Three qualities, goodness and passion. And if we fall down in the ignorance, just like the spark falls down on the water, then it is extinguished, no Krsna consciousness, finished. But it can be revived. That is explained in the Prema-vivarta,

krsna-bahirmukha hana bhoga vancha kare
nikata-stha maya tare japatiya dhare

As soon as we want to imitate, even in the material world, those who are trying to go up again, back to home, back to Godhead.... There are different processes, karma, jnana, yoga. Krsna is explaining the karma. How to go back again to the original consciousness, that is being described, karma, how to work.

So even those who are trying for that, because that original disease is there, therefore even one who has advanced spiritually, he also says, "I am God. I am God." The same spirit, to make competition with Krsna. The maya is there. "Why you are going to worship Krsna? You are God." "Oh, yes, I am God." This is the last snare of maya. Therefore they are Mayavadis. Nobody can become Krsna. Krsna says, mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya [Bg. 7.7]. Nobody can be equal to Krsna; nobody can be greater than Krsna. Then what is the meaning of God? If there are so many rascal Gods, then what is the specific personality of God? So this is the last snare of maya, if one is trying to become God. That is not possible. That is asuric. Asuram bhavam asritah. They never will...

Krsna's desire is that you surrender. Sarva-dharman... You have manufactured so many things within this material world to become happy. This is all foolishness. You will never be happy. Therefore Krsna says, because Krsna loves, that you sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. But maya says, "No. Why? You become Krsna. You become God." This is going on. This is asuric, asuram bhavam. So it is very difficult to give up the asuram bhavam.

na mam duskrtino mudhah
prapadyante naradhamah
mayayapahrta-jnana
asuram bhavam asritah
[Bg. 7.15]

On the basis of asuram bhavam, one is always constantly engaged in duskrtina, I mean to say, sinful activities, and mudha, falsely thinking that he is God. Therefore he is a mudha. That is the sign. A big mudha. Small mudhas, they are working hard only to become happy, and the big mudha, he wants to become God. The small mudha wants to become a minister or a president, and the big mudha wants to become God. The disease is the same: "I shall become the most powerful." But that is not possible.

Therefore these big mudhas who simply falsely thinking that "I have become now liberated by meditation or by some jugglery of powers," so they have been described in the Bhagavatam as vimukta-maninah. They are falsely thinking that they have become liberated, they have become Narayana. How you can become Narayana? The sastra says,

yas tu narayanam devam
brahma-rudradi-daivataih
samatvenaiva vikseta
sa pasandi bhaved dhruvam

Narayanam devam. Even Sankaracarya, he says, narayanah avyaktat parah: "Narayana is transcendental. He has nothing to do with this material world."

So Vaisnavas also say, yas tu narayanam devam brahma-rudradi-daivataih. Brahma, Lord Brahma and Lord Siva, they are demigods of this material world. So if one puts Narayana even with the label of Brahma and Rudra, Lord Siva and Lord Brahma... They are very exalted, big demigods. Lord Siva is almost like Narayana. Narayana is ninety-five percent complete God, and Lord Siva is eighty-five percent and Krsna is cent percent. There is analysis. So yas tu narayanam devam brahma-rudradi-daivataih, samatvenaiva vikseta. Samatvena, equal "Well, whatever is Narayana, that is also Lord Siva, that is also Lord Brahma, that is also goddess Kali." This is Mayavada. Because the Mayavada philosophy is that "The Absolute Truth is impersonal. That is the final understanding. So because we cannot think of impersonal, meditate upon that, let us imagine some form." Sadhakanam hitvarthaya brahmano rupa-kalpanah.(?) The Mayavadi philosophers, they say that kalpana, "You just imagine any form." Therefore they especially recommend the five forms, the five form: the Surya, sun-god, Ganesa and Durga, Visnu and Lord Siva.

There is also Visnu. But this Visnu and the Vaisnava conception of Visnu is different. This Visnu is imagination, and Vaisnava conception of Visnu is reality. Krsna is reality. Avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritam [Bg. 9.11]. Those are mudhas, the same mudhas, because He has come in the form of a human being, they say, "This is maya. This Krsna has come.... The impersonal Brahman has assumed a body, accepting this body given by maya." This is the Mayavada philosophy. But actually Krsna does not come. Because Krsna says, daivi hy esa guna-mayi mama maya. Maya is controlled by Him. How He can accept subordinance of maya? No.

So Vaisnava philosophy is very perfect philosophy according to the sastra and Vedas. All the acaryas confirm. So we have to follow this. Then our life will be successful.

So Krsna is teaching how to work, how to work. Now, here He says that tyaktva karma-phala. Now, who will be ready to work? Suppose you are doing some business and there is expectation of profit, one lakh of rupees. Now profit comes. Then if I say, "Now here is, in Bhagavad-gita it is said, tyaktva karma-phala. You give it up," are you ready? No. "I have with so much hard labor I have earned. Why shall I give it up?" But here it is said, tyaktva karma-phala. Then immediately his impetus to work will be finished, that these ordinary persons, those who are karmis, if I say that "Yes, you earn, I mean, lakhs of rupees, but you will not be allowed to take it..."

Just like the communist country. The communist country, they are engaging people to work, but you cannot take the result. The government will take. And therefore they are not very enthusiastic. I have been in your communist country. They are not very enthusiastic. That is, unless one can enjoy personally, he is not interested in any business. "Why shall I work so hard?" This is natural. But here it is said, tyaktva karma-phala. What is the difference between the communist philosophy and Vaisnava philosophy? The communist also says that everyone should work without expecting the result. The result will go to the government. Similarly, where the result will go? It is communist proposal? No. That will be explained later on. Karisye... [break] ...is it meaning that, tyaktva karma-phala. No. Tyaktva karma-phala means that you should give it to Krsna. That is tyaktva karma-phala.

So those who are devotees, although tyaktva karma-phala, they are not touching the fruit, still, they are nitya-trptah, very satisfied. The karmis are dissatisfied, "So I worked so hard. Now I have to give up whatever I have earned?" He becomes very, very sorry. But who becomes nitya-trptah? Working like this, without taking the result, still nitya-trptah, very satisfied. That is devotion. That is devotee.

You will see these boys, these American, European boys... Also some of them are Indian. They are working day and night. They are getting money also. They are getting money also. They are making life members. They are selling some books. There is no scarcity of money. But they do not touch even a single paise. It is for Krsna. And still, they are happy. This is tyaktva karma-phalasangam. Asanga means no attachment. They are bringing money and giving to me. I spend it like anything. So this is tyaktva karma-phala-asangam nitya-trptah, very much satisfied. "I have been able to collect so much and give it to Krsna." This is their satisfaction. Tyaktva karma-phala-asangam nitya..., nirasrayah. Don't expect any profit, no dividend. As soon as there is dividend, immediately it is material. Immediately he'll be complicated. As so long there is no expectation of dividend, then he is pure devotee. This is the difference.

Anyabhilasita-sunyam jnana-karmady-anavrtam [Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.1.11]. Jnana-karmady-anavrtam [Madhya 19.167]. This karma-phala... A devotee doesn't want karma-phala. Therefore he is not implicated. He doesn't want. Therefore it is said, karmany abhipravrtto 'pi. Although he is engaged in karma... Because superficially it looks like karma.... Karma and bhakti looks the same thing. But the difference is that the result is for Krsna and the karmi's result is for "myself." That is the difference. That is the difference. Karmany abhipravrtto 'pi naiva kincit karoti sah. This is the.... Although he is doing day and night, but he is still doing nothing. Doing nothing means doing, but he is not becoming entangled with the results. That is.... Because karma and karma-phala, one has to accept the karma-phala, but this man who is doing everything for Krsna, he is not becoming entangled.

That is explained in the Second Chapter also. Yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra karma-bandhanah. If you don't act for Krsna, then you will be entangled by the resultant action. But if you do it for Krsna, then you will not be entangled. Your everything will be taken as devotion. Everything. Everything will be taken on account of devotion. And devotion means you are making progress.

mam ca yo 'vyabhicarena
bhakti-yogena sevate
sa gunan samatityaitan
brahma-bhuyaya kalpate
[Bg. 14.26]

So activities on the platform of devotional service, without expecting any result for his personal satisfaction, means on the platform of liberation. Thank you very much. (end)
