Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Take a test

Pradyumna: (reading) "Let me offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of Srila Rupa Gosvami Prabhupada and of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada by whose inspiration I have been engaged in the matter of compiling this summary study of Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu. This is the sublime science of devotional service as propounded by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who appeared 500 years ago in West Bengal, India, to propagate the movement of Krsna consciousness. Srila Rupa Gosvami begins his great book by offering his respectful obeisances unto Sri Sanatana Gosvami who is his elder brother and spiritual master, and he prays that Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu may be very pleasing to him."

Prabhupada: Yes.

Pradyumna: "He further prays..."

Prabhupada: Our... Srila Rupa Gosvami wanted to please Sanatana Gosvami. Our duty is to please the superior, not the public. We are giving service to the public according to the direction of the superior authority. We do not manufacture any program of service. That is not our business. Whatever is ordered by the... Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He's Krsna Himself. Still, He was following the authorities. Sri Krsna, Bhagavan, the Supreme Personality, He was also referring to the Brahma-sutra: brahma-sutra-padais caiva viniscitam. So this is the way, that any bona fide spiritual propaganda must be following the footsteps of previous authority.

At the present moment, it has become a fashion to manufacture some idea. But that is not the Vedic way. Vedic way is to receive the message through parampara system. Evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayoh viduh [Bg. 4.2]. Not to deviate the parampara. So Sanatana Gosvami was taught by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu continually for two months personally in Benares, Varanasi. Therefore he's our authority. The Hari-bhakti-vilasa, the Gaudiya Vaisnava sampradaya, they follow the principles of Hari-bhakti-vilasa. In that Hari-bhakti-vilasa Sanatana Gosvami recommends, tatha diksa-vidhanena dvijatvam jayate nrnam. Diksa-vidhana, by the process of diksa, a, any human being can be elevated to the position of a bona fide brahmana. Vidhanena. Vidhana. The very word is used, vidhana. Vidhana means bona fide process. Tatha diksa-vidhanena. There is another good suggestion: yatha kancanatam yati kamsa-rasa-vidhanena. Rasa. Rasa means ... Another meaning of rasa means... What is that? What is called? I forget. The metal...?

Devotee: Bell metal.

Prabhupada: Eh?

Pradyumna: Bell metal?

Prabhupada: No, not bell... That liquid metal.

Devotees: Mercury.

Prabhupada: Mercury. Mercury. Hydrox... What is called? Hydroid?

Devotee: Quicksilver?

Prabhupada: No. Another name is hydrogeroid. That is the chemical name of mercury. You know it. Hydrogeroid? Yes. Unguentum hydrogeroid. Yes. That is another name of the mercury. Hydrogeroid. So in Sanskrit it is called rasa. Rasayana. From mercury, rasa, the chemistry is called rasayana-sastra. Actually, rasayana-sastra, chemical composition, begins from mercury and sulphur. That is the beginning of chemical composition. So rasa-vidhanena, by chemical interaction of sulphur and mercury, if you can add tin and copper, then it becomes gold. You can manufacture gold, provided you know the process, how to mix up copper, tin and mercury. With via media of sulphuric acid. Sulphuric acid is the mother of chemicals. Without sulphur, you cannot make any chemical composition. Therefore all chemical composition are called sulphate, sulphite, like that. So Sanatana Gosvami gives this idea of chemical composition. It appears that he knew how to work with chemicals.

yatha kancanatam yati
kamsa-rasa-vidhanatah
tatha diksa-vidhanena
dvijatvam jayate nrnam

So we are trying to follow Sanatana Gosvami. By diksa-vidhanena, by initiating persons any, from anywhere. It does not matter. Because in this age, Kali-yuga, the diksa-vidhana is performed according, according to Pancaratrika-vidhi. Not Vaidika-vidhi. Vaidika-vidhi is very strict. Unless one is bona fide son of a dvija, the initiation was not given. To the sudras, there was no initiation. A brahmana ksatriya, vaisya. So these are the Vedic process. So in the Kali-yuga, because it is to be understood that everyone is a sudra, therefore Vaidika-vidhana cannot be applied. Vaidika-vidhana requires that one must be born by a brahmana, ksatriya. Then he's eligible for being initiated. But in the Kali-yuga, that is not possible. Therefore the Pancaratriki-vidhi is accepted. Narada-Pancaratra. Tatha diksa-vidhanena. This diksa-vidhana, recommended by Sanatana Gosvami, means Pancaratriki-vidhi. Now Rupa Gosvami says in his Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu,

sruti-smrti-puranadi-
pancaratriki-vidhim vina
aikantiki harer bhaktir
utpatayaiva kalpate
 [Brs. 1.2.101]

Without undergoing the process of sruti -- means Vedas -- smrti, the Puranas, and other corollary literatures, Bhagavad-gita, Mahabharata, Smrti, Manu-smrti, the laws given by Manu, Parasara... So Hari-bhakti, devotional service to the Lord, must be approved by Vedas, Puranas. Pancaratriki-vidhi. Otherwise, any show of devotional service is simply disturbance. Anyone can manufacture. And it is being supported by some very big missionary activities: yata mata tata pata. You can manufacture your way of religious principles. But that is not Vedic way. Vedic way is evam parampara-praptam [Bg. 4.2]. Although we are initiating people from low-grade society, still, following the principles of Pancaratriki-vidhi, injunction of the Gosvamis. Therefore it is bona fide. Bhagavata-vidhi, Pancaratriki-vidhi, they are bona fide vidhi. So Sanatana Gosvami... Rupa Gosvami, first offers his respectful obeisances to his elder brother, Sanatana Gosvami, because Rupa Gosvami accepted him as spiritual master. And he was initiated by Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Sanatana Gosvami. Rupa Gosvami also. So he offers his respectful obeisances to Sanatana Gosvami. Go on.

Pradyumna: "He further prays that by residing in that ocean of nectar he may always feel transcendental pleasure in the service of Radha and Krsna."

Prabhupada: Yes. "Ocean of nectar." The Mayavadi philosophers, generally they give this example that the, all the rivers, they flow down to the ocean. This example is generally given that when the river mixes with the ocean, it doesn't matter which course it is following. After all, it is coming to the ocean, merging into the ocean. So that is ultimate liberation. But this analogy... Analogy, if you give some analogy, you must consider all the similar points. That is the way of analogy. The more you have got similar points, then the analogy is perfect. So the rivers merging into the ocean. Then you must take further consideration that the superficial water mixing with the ocean is again evaporated. The water is evaporated by scorching heat of the sun. Just like now we see cloud in the sky. This is nothing but evaporated water from the sea. So the water which merged into the water and into the ocean of the, water of the ocean, now it is evaporated in the sky. And again it will fall down. And then again glide to the ocean. So this is called avagamana, coming and going, coming and going. But our Vaisnava philosophy is not to merge into the water, but keep your identity and go deep into the water. So that you may not be evaporated. The fish and the aquatic animals within the water, they are not evaporated. They are not going to become cloud and again fall down. Therefore Sanatana, Rupa Gosvami says, "He further prays that by residing in the ocean of nectar he may always feel transcendental pleasure..."

Our philosophy is go back to home, back to Godhead. Not in the spiritual sky. Paravyoma. Spiritual sky, there is chance of falling down. Why chance? It is sure. Those who are merging into the Brahman effulgence, the sastra says that they again fall down. Aruhya krcchrena param padam tatah patanty adhah [SB 10.2.32]. Aruhya krcchrena. They, jnanis, they undergo severe austerities, penances to merge into the existence of impersonal Brahman. But they fall down again. They fall down again because they have no shelter. Anadhrta-yusmad-anghrayah. As, as in this sky, there are many planets. You can go with high speed to the Moon planet or Venus planet. But if you have no shelter to stay there, you come back again on this earthly planet, that is practically experienced, similarly you may merge into the Brahman effulgence. Just like our plane goes very high and, at a certain point, we see it is invisible, merged. Actually, it is not merged. Our eyes cannot see any more. They take it as merge.

Therefore Jiva Gosvami, this merging principle, he has explained: just like a green bird enters into a green tree, it, it appears that the bird is no more existing. To the imperfect eyes. But the bird is existing. We cannot see. Both the tree and the bird being green, we see it has merged. Because the spiritual sky and the spiritual living being, a small, it merges it does not merge. It is there. The individuality is there. And because this individuality, fragment of the Supreme Brahman, is eternal, is eternal, sanatana... It is not that spirit can be cut into pieces. That is not possible. So we are fragmental parts. That means eternally we are so, individual. Nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). We are one of the nityas. There are innumerable nityas and cetanas, the living entities, part and parcel of the supreme living entity, Krsna. They're all individual.

Krsna also says in the Bhagavad-gita, "My dear Arjuna, do not think that I, you, or all these soldiers and kings who have assembled in this battlefield, they were not existing in the past. They were. And they are existing at present. And similarly they will exist in the future." That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita. So where is the question of merging? And loss of individuality? The individuality remains. It remained in the past. It is, at the present moment, it is continuing. And in the future also, they will remain, the same way. This is clearly explained in the second chapter of Bhagavad-gita. So merging does not mean, always, that losing one's individuality. The individuality's there. Therefore the theory of merging into the existence of impersonal Brahman is to stay there for some time, again fall down. Just like the same example that the water of the rivers, they merge into the ocean, but again it is evaporated, in the sky, and it falls. Again goes through the river, merges. Bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19]. This is going on. One mani..., once manifested, and again merging. This is going on.

So our philosophy is that once going into the ocean, no more coming back. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9]. That is our philosophy. If we once go in the spiritual world, we do not like to come back. We stay with Krsna and dance with Him, or play with Him, or serve with, serve Him as tree, as plant, as water, as cows, as land, as cowherd boys, as father, mother, or as gopis. This is our philosophy. Once we go to Krsna, we live forever with Him in either of these capacities. Let me live at Vrndavana in any capacity. It doesn't matter. But live there. Therefore he says that "He further prays that by residing in that ocean of nectar he may always feel eternally continually, without any cessation..." Anandamayo 'bhyasat (Vedanta-sutra 1.1.12). To remain anadamaya. That is the principle of Vaisnava philosophy. Go on.

Pradyumna: "Let us offer our respectful obeisances to all the great devotees and acaryas or holy teachers, who are compared with sharks in the great ocean of nectar and who do not care for the various rivers of liberation. Impersonalists are very fond of merging into the supreme, like rivers that come down and merge into the ocean. The ocean can be compared with liberation and the rivers with all the different paths of liberation. The impersonalists are dwelling in the river water, which eventually comes to mix with the ocean. They have no information, however, that within the ocean, as within the rivers, there are innumerable aquatic living entities. The sharks who dwell in the ocean do not care for the rivers which are gliding down into it."

Prabhupada: Yes. The shark, big fish, shark, big body, they have no place to come into the river, come back. There is no place. Big crocodile, big sharks, they do not come to the river. They constantly remain in the ocean. Go on. Yes.

Pradyumna: "The devotees eternally live in the ocean of devotional service, and they do not care for the rivers. In other words, those who are pure devotees always remain in the ocean of transcendental loving service to the Lord and have no business with the other processes which are compared to the rivers that only gradually come to the ocean. Srila Rupa Gosvami prays to his spiritual master Srila Sanatana Gosvami for the protection of Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu, the ocean of the pure nectar of devotional service, from the argumentative logicians who unnecessarily meddle in the science of service to the Lord. He compares their arguments and logic to volcanic eruptions in the midst of the ocean."

Prabhupada: Yes. Na tams tarkena yojayet. Acintyah khalu ye bhava na tams tarkena yojayet. Simply by arguments, logic, you cannot understand Krsna. That is the Vedic injunction. Tarko apratistho. You cannot establish the truth by simple logic and arguments. You may be very great logician, but somebody may come who is greater logician than you, and he defeats you. That is going on. Tarko apratistha srutayo vibhinnam. Now, if you read the Vedas, you'll find some contradiction. Not contradiction. But to the neophyte, it appears to be contradiction. Just like we have cited the example that animal stool is impure, but cow dung is pure. So by logic you can say that "Cow dung is also the stool of an animal. How it becomes pure?" But in Vedas you'll find such things. Therefore by simple studying, without surrendering yourself to the spiritual master, you'll find all these contradictions and you'll be bewildered. Srutayo vibhinna. They are not vibhinna. But to our limited knowledge, sometimes they appear as vibhinnam, different. Srutayo vibhinnam nasau munir yasya matam na bhinnam. And you won't find a philosopher who does not agree, who does not disagree with our philosophers.

Therefore dharmasya tattvam nihitam guhayam mahajano yena gatah sa panthah [Cc. Madhya 17.186]. We have to follow the footsteps of great acaryas. That is the way. These mahajanas are described in the sastra like Lord Brahma, Lord Siva, svayambhur naradah sambhuh kapilah kumaro manuh [SB 6.3.20]. They are all mentioned. So you follow any one of these great personalities, Brahma... Brahma is the greatest personality within this universe, and he has got his sampradaya which is known as Brahma-sampradaya. Similarly Lord Siva has also a sampradaya which is called Rudra-sampradaya. Similarly, Narada-Pancaratra, Kumara-sampradaya. So follow the sampradaya. Sampradaya vihina te mantras te viphalam matah. If you do not follow any bona fide sampradaya, then your path of spiritual advancement will be baffled. You will simply waste your time. Viphalam matah. So we should follow the footsteps of great acaryas. Then our progress is positive. There is no fear.

So to take shelter of the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead... Just like Rupa Gosvami's described, describing herewith that he wants to take shelter of the ocean, deep into the ocean, and he doesn't care for the rivers. And the, what is called? Bharavagni (?)? There is some whirling pool in the water. That is compared with the arguments. Sometimes these logicians, they create argumental calamity in the process of devotional service. But Rupa Gosvami recommends that we should not be deviated by the arguments, karmis, jnanis and yogis. Let them do their own business. We do not care for them. We give them respect as far as possible, but we don't, don't accept the path of karma-jnana-yoga. Jnana-karmady-anavrtam [Cc. Madhya 19.167]. Jnana-karmady-anavrtam. Anyabhilasita-sunyam jnana-karmady-anavrtam [Brs. 1.1.11]. We should not be deviated by the process of karma-jnana-yoga. That is pure devotional service, suddha-bhakti. Suddha-bhakti. We should stay. We should fix up in suddha-bhakti path. That is the recommendation of Srila Rupa Gosvami. Go on.

Pradyumna: "In the midst of the ocean such volcanic eruptions can do very little harm. Similarly, those who are against devotional service to the Lord and who put forward many philosophical theses about the ultimate transcendental realization cannot disturb this great ocean of devotional service."

Prabhupada: Go on.

Pradyumna: "The author of Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu, Srila Rupa Gosvami, very humbly submits that he is just trying to spread Krsna consciousness all over the world, although he humbly thinks himself unfit for this work. That should be the attitude of all preachers of the Krsna consciousness movement, following in the footsteps of Srila Rupa Gosvami. We should never think of ourselves as great preachers, but should always consider that we are simply instrumental to the previous acaryas, and simply by following in their footsteps, we may be able to do something for the benefit of suffering humanity."

Prabhupada: Yes. Just like Narottama dasa Thakura says, tandera carana-sevi-bhakta-sane vasa. Tandera carana-sevi. Our main business is..., (uproar in background, sounds like monkey attacked audience) (pause) Hut! Hut! (laughter, applause) So our main business is to serve the acaryas. This Krsna consciousness movement means why..., we are trying to serve the acaryas. Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His direct disciples, the Sad-gosvamis, and their disciples. Rupa-raghunatha-pade haibe akuti. That is required.

tandera carana-sevi-bhakta-sane vasa
janame janame mora ei abhilasa

So this society is attempting to create a society of devotees all over the world, without any discrimination of caste, creed, color. One must be a devotee of Krsna. Yei krsna-tattva-vetta sei guru haya [Cc. Madhya 8.128]. One must know the science of Krsna. Then he can preach to others. Sei guru haya. That is our purpose.

People may not misunderstand our propagation that we are proselytizing some persons to Hinduism. Yesterday one so-called jnani came to me, and he challenged me that "Swamiji, formerly the Christians used to convert the Hindus and the Muhammadans used to convert the Hindus into Muhammadanism or Christianism. Now you are converting the Christians into Hinduism. Then where is the difference between their activities and your activities?" So this fool does not know this is not making a person from Christian to Hindu. This is not the process. We are not interested. I never said in any meeting in the Western countries that "Hindu religion is better than your Christian religion. You give up your Christian religion and come to Hindu religion." No, that was not my propaganda. There are many old students here present. They may remember. I never made propaganda. Rather when they inquired one can attain perfection by following Christian principles, I said yes. So our propaganda is not to proselytize people from Christian to Hinduism. Our propaganda is to make everyone know this fact, that everyone is eternally servant of Krsna. That is our propaganda. Jivera svarupa haya nitya krsna dasa [Cc. Madhya 20.108-109]. That is our propaganda. We are trying to convince people that "Your original position is servant of Krsna. You have now forgotten that. You revive your Krsna consciousness, and you'll become happy." That is our propaganda.

Do not misunderstand that we are trying to spread Hinduism. Hinduism is a fictitious term. Because there is no fixed-up conclusion. Somebody's accepting this, somebody... Even the Jains and the Sikhs and many other sub-religions, they are also ruled by the Hindu rules, Hindu law. So actually this word Hindu is given by the Muhammadans. We don't find this word in the Vedic literature, Hindu. It is later, I mean to say, prakrta. Or in Bhagavad-gita you won't find the word Hindu. Or in Srimad-Bhagavatam. Or any other Vedic literature. This is the convention of latest age. Actually, we, the followers or Vedic principles, our system is varnasrama-dharma, four varnas and four asramas. This is, this can be applicable. But varnasrama-dharma is applicable in any, in anywhere. Catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah [Bg. 4.13]. The creation of God... Just like sun. Sun is creation of God. Sun is visible everywhere. Not that something American sun and something Indian sun. No. The sun is the same. Similarly, catur-varnyam, the four principles of division, brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, and sudra, they are everywhere. It is not the monopoly of India.

Anywhere there are intelligent class of men, God conscious men, they are called brahmanas. Anywhere who are prepared for the right cause, administrator, ksatriyas. Anywhere who are interested in business, trade, agriculture, they are called vaisyas. And anywhere who are simply satisfied by serving others, he's called sudra. So our principle is not to proselytize from Christian to Hindu or Muhammadan to Hindu. We are teaching simply how to revive his own constitutional position to become servant of Krsna. This is Krsna consciousness movement. So it is applicable anywhere and everywhere. It is not that it is monopoly of India or for the Hindus. No. And actually it is being accepted, practically. In all countries. Even from all religious sect. In our Society there are boys and girls, they are coming from Christian group, Jews group, Muhammadan group, but when they come here, all of them become the servant of Krsna. That is Krsna consciousness movement.

Thank you very much. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Harikesa: "The glory of the Lord is always worth singing, for His glories enhance the glories of His devotees. One should therefore meditate upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead and upon His devotees. One should meditate on the eternal form of the Lord until the mind becomes fixed."

Prabhupada:

kirtanya-tirtha-yasasam
punya-sloka-yasaskaram
dhyayed devam samagrangam
yavan na cyavate manah
 [SB 3.28.18]

This is called meditation. Yavan, so long the mind is disturbed and deviates from our subject of meditation, one should practice this kirtana. Kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc. Adi 17.31]. Caitanya Mahaprabhu advises that the devotee should chant always, twenty-four hours, kirtanya: "It is worth singing." It is worth singing, why? Punya slokasya, punya slokasya. Punya sloka yasaskaram. Even if you do not fix up your mind... Kirtana means fix up your mind, but even if you do not fix up your mind, then you are still gainer. The more you glorify the Lord, you become pious simply by kirtana. It is not necessary that you understand, but if you go on chanting Hare Krsna maha-mantra, then you become pious. Punya-sloka. Krsna's another name is Punya-sloka, Uttama-sloka. Simply by chanting "Krsna," you become pious.

So dhyayed devam samagrangam. The dhyana, the meditation, should begin from the lotus feet. As soon as you begin kirtana, first of all concentrate your mind on the lotus feet, not all of a sudden jump over the face. Be practiced to think over the lotus feet, then still higher, the knees, then the thighs, then the belly, then the chest. In this way, at last go to the face. This is the process. It is described in the Second Canto. The process is how to think of Krsna. Man-mana bhava mad-bhaktah. This is meditation. So this... By kirtana it becomes very easy. If you chant Hare Krsna maha-mantra twenty-four hours like Haridasa Thakura... That is not possible. So as much as possible... Tirtha-yasasa. Kirtana, this is also kirtana. We are talking about Krsna, reading about Krsna, reading Krsna's instruction in the Bhagavad-gita or reading Krsna's glories in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. They are all kirtana. It is not that simply when we sing with musical instruments, that is kirtana. No. Anything you talk about Krsna, that is kirtan.

Kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc. Adi 17.31] means that... Vacamsi vaikuntha-gunanuvarnane. This is the character of Maharaja Ambarisa, that whenever he would talk, he would talk about Krsna. This is kirtana. He won't talk anything else. Sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayoh [SB 9.4.18]. Whenever he will think, he will think of Krsna -- His lotus feet, His body, His hands, His flute. This is meditation. Meditation means that... Trance means when your mind is so fixed up on Krsna or Visnu that not for a second your mind is deviated from the Krsna's form. That is called trance. Not artificially. You can practice it. If you see Krsna daily in the temple, if you worship, you offer your obeisances -- man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65] -- naturally you will think of Krsna twenty-four hours, and that will make you more pious, because without being pious, nobody can think of Krsna. Yesam anta-gatam papam. Pious means there is no reaction of sinful life. It is all squared up. That you can do at any moment. Krsna takes charge. Krsna says, buddhih sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami. He can do that. He can nullify the destiny. Karmnnirdahati kintu ca bhakti-bhajam. Everyone is bound up by the laws of karma. Yas tv indragopam athavendram aho sva-karma-bandhanurupa-phala-bhajanam atanoti [Bs. 5.54]. Everyone, beginning from that small microbe, indragopa, and up to the king of heaven -- his name is also Indra. So from this Indra to that Indra, all different types of living entities, they are suffering, not enjoying; suffering the resultant action of their past sinful life. This is material existence. Everyone is suffering, but maya is so kind that he (she) misleads the sufferer to understand the suffering is enjoying. This is maya. Actually everyone is suffering, but he is misled to think that he is enjoying.

So if we keep ourself always in contact with Krsna, then we become pious more and more, and as soon as our sinful reaction of life is counteracted by these pious activities, we begin to understand Krsna. Yesam tv anta-gatam papam. Without being sinless, nobody can understand Krsna. So this process should be continued. Kirtanya-tirtha-yasasam punya-sloka-yasaskaram dhyayed devam. Devam. Devam means the Supreme Lord. Samagrangam. So if He has no form, how you can think of His whole body, samagra? Samagra means the whole; angam means body. Samagrangam. So if He has no body, if He is formless, if He is nirakara, then where is the question of angam? He has angam, samagrangam, but He hasn't got a form like us. That is the meaning. When in the sastra it is said that God has no form, it means that He has no material form. He has form; otherwise how can I think of His form? This Krsna's form is not like us. Just like if you take my statue or any other statue and if you pray or if you offer food, that does not go actually to the person. But Krsna's His anga, His form, is nondifferent from Krsna. Foolish people may say that "These men, they are offering food to a marble statue. Everyone knows." No. It is not the fact. The fact is Krsna is omnipotent. He can accept your service, becoming a marble statue. Because I cannot see Krsna by my present eyes, therefore He has appeared before you just like a marble statue. But He is not marble statue. We must know that. If you think, "Here is marble statue, and if I commit some offense, who is going to see?" this is wrong conclusion. He is, Krsna, personally present here in a form which we can see. It is His mercy. It is called arca-vigraha. Krsna is everything. This marble is also Krsna's energy. Bhumir apo'nalo vayuh [Bg. 7.4]. So He can accept your service from any of His energy. The marble is also His energy, the water is also His energy, the air is also His energy -- everything. Without Krsna nothing can exist. So He is omniscient, all-powerful. He can accept your service through His energy. This is arca-vigraha. Samagrangam.

So Krsna has got form, angam, but His anga is different. Sac-cid-ananda-vigraha [Bs. 5.1]. His anga is sac-cid-ananda, not like...Ananda-cinmaya-rasa pratibhavitabhis tabhir ya eva nija-rupataya kalabhih [Bs. 5.37]. Krsna and His expansion-ananda-cinmaya. Just like Krsna is in the rasa dance. These gopis are also expansion of His energy. And you will find, therefore, with each and every gopi, Krsna is there. That is another expansion. So we should not take Krsna's dancing like our ball dance. No, that is mistake. If we understand Krsna's dancing, then we become liberated. It is said in the Srimad-Bhagavatam that instead of reading some books of this ball dance, if you read about Krsna's dancing, then what will be the result? The result will be hrd-roga-kamam apahinoty asv acirena dhirah. Everyone, we have got these lusty desires, but if actually one is advanced and he hears from a realized person what is the meaning of Krsna's rasa dance, then the result will be hrd-roga-kamam. We have got a heart disease. Heart disease means lusty desire. Hrd-roga-kamam apahinoti: "It becomes vanquished." If one actually hears Krsna's rasa-lila, then no more material lusty desires, this is the result.

But unless we are so advanced spiritually, we should not indulge in hearing about rasa-lila. Then we shall commit offense. We shall think that "Krsna is dancing like us." How He, Krsna is dancing? Krsna is dancing with each and every gopi. Can you do that? Then how you can say that "Krsna is dancing like us"? If you see the picture, you will find that each and every... Every gopi is thinking that "Krsna is dancing with me." How it is possible? If you dance with imitation... There are many rascals. They imitate that, that "I am Krsna, and I can dance also like that." No. It is ananda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhavitabhih [Bs. 5.37]. This manifestation, demonstration, is not of this material world. Ananda-cinmaya-rasa. When Krsna was dancing, all the gopis, they left their material body by the side of the husband, but they went to dance. That is spiritual body. That is not material body. So don't indulge in such a way, that "Krsna's dancing and our dancing is the same." Then you will be mistaken. That will be offense.

So we have to become advanced in spiritual understanding. And people, the so-called artists, they indulge in Krsna's pictures, His dealings with the gopis. That is not very good. That is misleading. People may think, and actually that happens. If without being mature, without being advanced in spiritual consciousness, if one tries to understand or see Krsna-lila with the gopis, then he will be misled. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu, you will find, rigidly He discussed this Krsna-lila with very confidential devotee, Ramananda Raya, not with others. He never discussed with Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya or Prakasananda Sarasvati. He discussed on philosophy of Mayavada, but not on Krsna-lila. Krsna-lila He discussed with Ramananda Raya, most confidential devotee. And to understand Krsna, Vyasadeva has devoted nine chapter, nine cantos. And then, from Tenth Canto, he begins Krsna-lila.

So Krsna-lila is the face of Krsna, smiling of Krsna. So here we have to practice to see the different parts of the body gradually from down. We first of all see His lotus feet, then gradually... So that is described. The two feet, they are called the first chapter, in the First Canto, Second Canto. In this way we must go. Everything is very scientifically arranged. If we take it in chronologically, according to the instruction of the sastra, then it will be very easy. Otherwise,

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascid vetti mam (tattvatah)
 [Bg. 7.3]

We should understand tattvatah. That tattvatah means... Bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah [Bg. 18.55]. Again tattvatah. Only through devotional service.

So devotion What is devotional service? Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-seva... [SB 7.5.23]. We have to follow these nine principles of devotional service, especially this sravanam, kirtanam and arcanam, arcanam, worshiping the Deity, and sravanam kirtanam. Even if you follow one, that is sufficient, but there are nine different processes. As far as possible, we shall execute everything, and, at least, sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam, arcanam. Arcana is very important. For kanistha-adhikari, devotee in the lower stage, arcana is very, very important. Although the devotee in the higher stage, he also offers worship, but Krsna is everywhere. For a neophyte devotee Just like some people say that "Why you should go to the temple? Krsna is everywhere." Who was asking that question? "Krsna cannot be served..." Here, last night. I think those girls, svarna(?) girls. Krsna is everywhere, that is a fact, but that is for the paramhamsa, one who is very very advanced. For the kanistha-adhikari, he cannot He, like parrot, he can say, "Krsna is everywhere." He must be educated, "Here is Krsna in the temple." Otherwise it is simply blaspheme, that "Krsna is everywhere." That's a fact, but where is your realization? Krsna is within your heart. Have you got that realization? Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. Have you got that realization, that Krsna is within your heart? Can you talk with Krsna? He says, Krsna says, "I talk." Buddhi yogam-dadami tam. Krsna gives intelligence. Krsna is giving, but have you got that realization?

So these are all facts, that Krsna is everywhere, Krsna is within your heart, Krsna is within the atom. Andantara stha-paramanu-cayantara-tham. That's a fact, but where is your realization? Therefore you have to begin realization by arcana. That is very essential. Then more you become expert in arcana, ye yatha mam prapadyante [Bg. 4.11], the more you become realized, then more you become advanced. So therefore, for kanistha-adhikari, he has to raise himself.

arcayam eva haraye
yah pujam sraddhayehate
na tad-bhaktesu canyesu
sa bhaktah prakrtah smrtah

By executing this arca-vigraha, arcanam, gradually you advance. But if you simply remain in the arcana-viddhi or arcana process, and you cannot understand who is a bhakta and what to do with others... That is also a bhakta's duty, not that simply we shall remain engaged in arcana. We must know how to respect devotee, how to do some service to others also. That is madhyama-adhikari. Simply if you become satisfied, that "Now I am initiated and I am offering arcana. I have become perfect," no, the perfection is still awaiting. You have to understand who is a devotee. You have to understand how to give service to the innocent. If you do not know that, then if you simply become packed up by arca-vigraha-seva, arcana, then you will remain in the material platform. Na tad-bhaktesu canyesu sa bhaktah prakrtah smrtah. Prakrtah means material. He is trying to go to the spiritual platform, but if he simply remains in the arcana and does not preach, this is na tad-bhaktesu canyesu. Anyesu. Anyesu means those who are innocent. That is madhyama-adhikari, middle stage.

isvare tad-adhinesu
balisesu dvisatsu ca
prema-maitri-krpopeksa
yah karoti sa madhyamah

Isvara. Then, by arca-vigraha worship, by sravana-kirtana, by making your properly advanced you will understand what is the position of Krsna, isvara. And isvare tad-adhinesu. And adhina. Adhina means those who are working for Krsna. They are called tad-adhina. Adhina means subordinate.

So every devotee is subordinate. Nobody is equal to Krsna. If we do that, then it is mistake. Devotee... A devotee never says. Dasa. Dasa means servant. Servant is always the subordinate. Therefore Vaisnava says "dasa." He never says "master." Vaisnava, dasa, subordinate, tad-adhina, under the..., under Krsna. Nobody can be superior to Krsna or equal to Krsna. That is mistake. These Mayavadi philosophers, they think, "Now I have become equal to Krsna. I am also Krsna." That is rascaldom. Krsna, God, is never equal to anyone. Asamaurdhva. Asama means "not equal," and urdha, "always the top." Asamaurdhva. That is described in the Bhagavad... So we should remain tad-adhina, always under Krsna. That is our perfection. If we remain just like in Western countries -- they rebel. If a woman is advised to remain under the control of the husband, that is insult to them. They cannot tolerate it. But actually we see in India that a wife who remains under the guidance of the husband, she is happy. That's a practical fact. That is a practical fact. And therefore in the Manu-samhita it is advised, na striyam svatantram arhati.  Women should be always protected. That is... Protection does not mean negligence, no. Protection means to give him (her) all facilities. That is protection. Just like father gives protection to the chil... That does not mean neglecting. Similarly, a woman should be protected. It is not that neglecting. They misunderstand. In the Western countries maybe there is misbehavior, but actually we have seen, still going on in India, the woman is... That is the ideal given by Lord Ramacandra, how woman is given protection by the husband. Sitadevi was kidnapped. Ramacandra is the Supreme Lord. He could have married many thousands of Sita, but as the dutiful husband, to rescue one wife He killed the whole family of Ravana. This is protection. He killed the whole family of him. He became... This is. So woman requires protection, and the husband is responsible to give protection, the father is responsible to give protection, and the elderly children, they are responsible to give protection.

So we are prakrti. Prakrti purusa. So Krsna is the purusa. He is the protector of all living entities. Yesterday, bhrtyanugraha-kataram. Just like a father is always anxious to see his children are well protected, similarly, Krsna is also always anxious to give protection to His subordinates. But if the subordinate denounce Krsna, "I don't want Your protection," then suffer your karma. That you are doing. Those who are in the material world, they are suffering. Why? They have given up the protection of Krsna. They are thinking that "We can protect ourself. What is the use of Krsna?" So this is called dharmasya glanih. This is deviation from the natural way of life, when you give up the protection. So our Krsna consciousness movement is: again go back to that protection, go back to home, back to Godhead.

Thank you very much.

Devotees: All glories to Srila Prabhupada. [break]

Prabhupada: ...pariprasnena. To understand the subject matter submissively, to question, is one of the paraphernalia.

tad viddhi pranipatena
pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti tad jnanam
jnaninas tattva-darsinah
 [Bg. 4.34]

Devotee (1): You said that if we made a marble image of you and offered food to it, you would not accept it. So...

Prabhupada: Hm?

Brahmananda: In your lecture you said that someone who offers food to a statue of yourself...

Prabhupada: He is not statue, but people think statue. He is Krsna Himself. But because we cannot see Krsna at the present moment, therefore He appears like a statue.

Brahmananda: His question... You stated that a statue of yourself is not the same as you, and yet in some of our temples, such as Vrndavana, the murti of Your Divine Grace has been installed and they are offering prasadam. So is it the same, that the prasadam is accepted by the guru?

Prabhupada: Yes. Saksad-dharitvena samasta-sastraih. Guru is nondifferent from Krsna. That is accepted by all the sastra. Saksad-dharitvena samasta sastraih. Saksad-dharitvena samasta-sastrair uktah: ** "It is said," tatha bhavyata eva sadbhih, "and those who are advanced devotees, they accept it like that." Kintu prabhor yah priya eva tasya: "But the guru's position is the most confidential servant." So guru is the servant God, and Krsna is the master God. Both of them are God, servant God and master God. Guru krsna krpaya paya bhakti-lata-bija [Cc. Madhya 19.151]. So we have to serve both the servant and the master. Through the servant, we go to the master. Any other question? Chant Hare Krsna. (end)

"Material Affection Has No Meaning"

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.8.47
Mayapura, October 27, 1974

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Pradyumna: Translation: "King Yudhisthira, son of Dharma, overwhelmed by the death of his friends, was aggrieved just like a common, materialistic man. O sages, thus deluded by affection, he began to speak."

Prabhupada:

aha raja dharma-sutas
cintayan suhrdam vadham
prakrtenatmana viprah
sneha-moha-vasam gatah

Sneha, love, affection, and moha, illusion. So, prakrtena. Prakrtena means on the bodily conception of life. Actually, sneha is different. There are affection in different stages. This morning I was reading the statement of a fisherman who caught Caitanya Mahaprabhu in His trance, and by touching Caitanya Mahaprabhu he became spiritually ecstatic, but he thought that he has become ghostly haunted: "Here is a ghost." And he was thinking, "I am ghostly haunted, so if I become mad, who will take care of my wife and children?" This is the position. The fisherman was actually, spiritually, by the grace of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, simply by touching Him, he was so much spiritually advanced that he was chanting, dancing, crying -- means all the symptoms of spiritual ecstatic transformation was visible in his body -- but he thought that he had gone mad on account of touching the body, ghost. He was thinking like that. And the man thinking was that "If I become mad like this, then who will take care of my wife and children?"

This is sneha. Everyone is thinking. Even the lower animals, they are also thinking of giving protection to the children. I have got personal experience in Kanpur, I was sitting in my room, and one monkey was outside the door with his (her) kitty to take something out of my eating. But by chance the small kitty entered through the bars of the window within the room, and I saw the mother became almost mad immediately: "Oh, my son has gone inside, and it will not be allowed to come again." Anyway, I managed to push the small kitty to go away; then she was relieved. So this affection for children, for wife, for family members, increase, then to society, to country, even to the whole human society. There are so many persons. They have given their state (estate) for benefit of the whole human society. There are many, many philanthropists, charitably disposed men. They do that.

But all these activities are simply moha, illusion, only moha. It has no value. If you say that "So many things, it has no value?" it has value -- temporary, punya. Punya... There is also papa also. Suppose if you give charity... Charity is pious activities, but if you give charity to a brahmana, then it is -- proper brahmana, qualified brahmana, Vaisnava -- then your charity is properly utilized. And if you give the same charity to a drunkard, then you commit sinful activity. If you do not know what kind of charities we shall perform, if you blindly give charity, then sometimes you may be doing pious activities, but sometimes you are clearing the way for going to hell. Therefore in the Bhagavad-gita it is stated there are three kinds of charities: sattvika, rajasika, tamasika. If you perform sattvika charity, then you get good result; rajasika charity, you get some profit; and tamasika charity, you go to hell. So one must be very careful even for this sneha, or charity, or philanthropy.

There is another story -- it may be fact -- that a boy was raised by his aunt very liberally. Then, gradually, the boy became, in bad association, a thief. And the aunt was encouraging, "Oh, it is a very good business. You are bringing so many things without any labor." So... Or out of affection he (she) did not chastise the boy when he was stealing. Then he, at the end, became a murderer. So he committed a murder. Then when he was to be hanged, so the government men inquired, "What is your last wish?" "Now, I want to speak with my aunt through the ear." Then he was allowed. And the aunt was generally crying that "My nephew is going to be hanged." She was... So he caught up her ear with the teeth and cut it. So he said, "My dear aunt, if you would have chastised me in the beginning, then today, this position, that you are crying and I am going to be hanged, this would not have happened. But you did not do that. Therefore you are uselessly crying now, and this is your punishment: I cut off your ear with the teeth." A very good instruction.

So the so-called sneha, if it is not properly done... Nature's regulation is so strict that you cannot avoid the consequence. That is not possible. These are practical. I have seen another practical... In front of our residence there was another neighbor. So the old man had his daughter-in-law. So she was beating her one child. So I inquired through my servant, "Why this young woman is beating her child?" Now, then the servant brought me the news that this boy gave parata to his elder brother who is suffering from typhoid. The typhoid... In typhoid fever, solid food is forbidden strictly, but the boy did not know. He asked his younger brother that "If you steal one parata and if you give me, I am very much hungry." So he became very sympathetic to his brother, and he gave the parata. And the boy was ill; he aggravated the illness. So as soon as the mother heard that he gave a parata to him, he (she) began to beat: "Why did you give?" Now, it was charity, it was affection and sympathetic, but the result was beating with shoes. So if we do not know where charity should be given, then, where affection should be there, then we are under the laws of nature; we shall be punished if it is not properly done. There is punishment.

Therefore it is said, prakrtena atmana. Prakrtena, by worldly relationship, prakrtena atmana viprah sneha-moha-vasam gatah. Sneha, affection; moha, illusion. Just like Arjuna, the same thing: out of affection he was denying. He was denying, "No, no, Krsna, I shall not fight. There, on the other side, there are my brothers, my nephews, my grandfather, and my teacher, Dronacarya, all my object of affection and obeisances, and I will have to kill them. You are inducing me. No, no, don't do it." That is prakrtena. He did not know the spiritual necessities. Sometimes we take sannyasa. I have seen. One of our Godbrother, big Godbrother, he took sannyasa. So his son was crying, and he was also crying. Then, if you have got affection for your family, society, then why you are taking sannyasa? That is prakrtena. We should not be carried away by this material affection, no. That is not good. You must do your duty. That is the instruction of Bhagavad-gita, that "Arjuna, you are being carried away by your material affection, and you are hesitating to execute your duty. This is not good." Anarya-justam: "This is befitting for the anarya, non-Aryan." Non-Aryan means not civilized, and Aryan means civilized. This is the distinction. Now people are very much fond of calling themselves as civilized, Aryan, belonging to the Aryan family. Where is the Aryan civilization? Aryan civilization means this Vedic civilization. Just like Arjuna, a ksatriya, belonged to the Aryan civilization, and because he was denying to fight, Krsna accused him, "Oh, this is just like non-Aryans." Anarya-justam, non-Aryans.

So this is Aryan civilization. Aryan civilization means giving importance to the spiritual life. That is Aryan civilization. And those who are giving importance to the material life, prakrta, that is called prakrta. Sa bhaktah prakrtah smrtah. In devotional life also, there are prakrta-bhaktas. Prakrta-bhaktas are described,

arcayam eva haraye
pujam yah sraddhayehate
na tad-bhaktesu canyesu
sa bhaktah prakrtah smrtah

"A devotee" -- of course, that is the beginning -- "who is carrying the arca, Deity worship very nicely," arcayam eva haraye pujam yah sraddhaya, "with great affection, regulative principle, but he does not know," arcayam eva haraye pujam yah sraddhayehate, na tad-bhaktesu, "but he does not know how to respect a devotee," na tad-bhaktesu canyesu, "he does not know how to do good to others -- simply he is attached to the Deity worship -- "sa bhaktah prakrtah smrtah, "he's still on the material platform."

So one has to make advance. What is that advance? That advance is... What is that verse? The four kinds of... Prema-maitri-krpopeksa yah karoti sa madhyamah. Isvare tad-adhinesu. The further advancement... One has to make advance, stage by stage, from the kanistha-adhikari, from the lower stage, to the middle stage to the higher stage. So the next stage, from prakrta, from material position... Of course, any devotion is, any devotee is not on the material platform. He is... But if we remain more on the material platform, not on the spiritual platform, then we'll fall down. We'll fall down. Therefore one should try to make forward march. The forward march is to become a preacher. Bhaktesu canyesu. Preaching means to obey the order of the spiritual master or superior authorities and to do good to others, do good to others. They are suffering for want of Krsna consciousness. Try to preach them. This is the second stage. If we simply become blocked up for Deity worship and do not preach, then we remain in the lowest stage. But when we take up this work, preaching...

Preaching means he must be conscious, Krsna conscious, advanced. Krsna conscious means that he's a lover of Krsna. Isvare tad... He'll see four things: first Krsna, isvara; and tad-adhina, the devotees... Isvare tad-adhinesu and balisesu. Balisa means people, ignorant men, who do not know what is Krsna consciousness. They are called balisa, just like child. Child is called balisa. Ignorant men, balisesu, dvisatsu ca, and other class. He'll see four things: isvara, the Supreme Personality of Godhead; he'll see the devotees of Krsna; he'll see some ignorant person; and he'll see some envious person. That you will have to meet. If you become preacher, then you'll create so many enemies also. Just like Prahlada Maharaja. His father became enemy, not outside. Outside he might have many enemies, but the five-years-old boy, because he was taking opportunity in the school and as soon as the teachers are out, in the tiffin hour, he would immediately stand up on the bench and preach... You have seen the picture. He was preaching amongst his small class friends. That preaching work is there in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, how he was intelligently preaching.

His first was... Kaumaram... Bhakta? I forget now. My memory is becoming old. (laughs) So, kaumara acaret prajno dharman bhagavatan iha [SB 7.6.1]. That, he was preaching: "My dear friends, we are now unmarried boys, so this is the opportunity. Now we are unmarried. We are not very much attached to family life. This is the opportunity." Kaumara acaret prajnah. Because as soon as one becomes materially affectionate... Here it is said, prakrtena atmana viprah sneha-moha-vasam. The more we increase... When the child, when we are children, we have got little affection for playing or for father, mother, that's all, limited. But the more we grow, and especially when you are married, then this material affection increases, more entangled. That is also stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, pumsah striya mithuni-bhavam etam. This material life means sex life. So a man is searching after woman, and woman is searching after man. This is material bondage. This is natural not only human society -- in dog society. Just see. The dog is crying, is crying at night because he has lost that woman. Is it not? Just see, even in the dog, what to speak of human being. So this is material life, to be affectionate unnecessarily. Therefore devotional service means vairagya-vidya. Caitanya Mahaprabhu showed by His example how He gave up the affection of young, beautiful wife, very nice home, most affectionate mother, most influential position in the society -- gave up.

So this is the..., people do not know what is devotional service. Devotional service means... Just like Kunti was praying, "My dear Krsna, kindly help me how can I give up this affection of my family, the Pandavas and the Vrsnis." This is required. This is the first sacrifice, not prakrtena vasam gatah. Then it is... Actually, the perfection of life is no more affection for anything material: brahma-bhutah prasannatma na socati na kanksati [Bg. 18.54]. That is the beginning, when we have lost complete affection for... We are not cruel; that is not another... But we know, we should know, that this is not required. This is simply moha. This is simply moha. This is illusion. It has no meaning. It is simply entanglement. That one must know. That is called vairagya. Vairagya-vidya. Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya wrote hundred verses appreciating Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, of which two verses are available, because when he sent the hundred verses glorifying Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He immediately torn the papers, but the devotees collected the torn papers and saved one or two slokas. So one of the most important sloka is,

vairagya-vidya-nija-bhakti-yoga-
siksartham ekah purusah puranah
sri-krsna-caitanya-sarira-dhari
krpambudhir yas tam aham prapadye
[Cc. Madya 6.254]

Who is this Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu? He immediately recognized, "He is Krsna. He is Krsna." Krsna, as the Supreme Person, He ordered this vairagya-vidya, "Just give up, nonsense, all these things. Just surrender to Me." This is vairagya-vidya. The so-called affection and duty and so on, so on, sarva-dharman parityajya: [Bg. 18.66] "Give up." This is vairagya-vidya. So Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya could understand that "He is the same Krsna, same Krsna. Krsna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead ordered, but He did not personally teach how to become elevated in vairagya-vidya. Here is the same person, He has come again to teach practically how to attain this vairagya-vidya stage." Therefore he said, vairagya-vidya-nija-bhakti-yogam. Vairagya-vidya means you become detestful to the material thing -- param drstva nivartate -- but, as Kunti said that "My affection may increase for you," vairagya-vidya means not only simply give up affection of this material, but you increase your affection for Krsna. That is vairagya, not that giving up all affection for the material world, you become zero. The zero stage is brahma-bhuta stage: "I have no more any affection for material things." But zero stage, you cannot stay. That is not our nature. Anandamayo 'bhyasat. We want ananda.

So we give up this association. Unless we take Krsna's association there will be no ananda; it is simply zero. In the zero platform you cannot remain for many years or many days. Then you'll fall down. If you don't get, if you don't increase your affection for Krsna -- simply you give up the affection of this material world -- then you cannot stay for many days. You'll fall down. You'll fall down. Aruhya krcchrena param padam tatah patanty adho 'nadrta-yusmad-anghrayah [SB 10.2.32]. Simply negative process will not help you. You must take the positive position. So that is required. Otherwise, devotional service means vairagya-vidya. It is the transcendental education to become unattached to this material world. This is called vairagya.

In another place it is said,

vasudeve bhagavati
bhakti-yogah prayojitah
janayaty asu vairagyam
jnanam ca yad ahaitukam
[SB 1.2.7]

Vairagya or jnana, these two things required in human life, to become unattached to this material world and, based on jnana, knowledge. Just like a so-called sannyasi, they give up as a sentiment and take sannyasa, but unless he has knowledge, he cannot stay; he'll fall down. He'll fall down. Therefore vairagya and jnana, two things must be there. Jnana means full knowledge that "I am spirit soul; my only necessity is spiritual advancement of life." This is jnana. And then, naturally, he has no more any affection for material things.

So Yudhisthira Maharaja was thinking -- it is natural -- that on account of his position, to become the emperor of the world, suhrdam vadham, so many friends have been killed. Aha raja dharma-sutas cintayan suhrdam vadham. This is natural. But duty is duty. When Krsna says that, as He did to Arjuna, that "You must fight. You must kill them," that is duty. That is Krsna consciousness -- no consideration of my affection. That is duty, and Arjuna did it. This is the duty of the devotee. Anukulyena krsnanusilanam bhaktir uttama. First-class devotion is to serve Krsna just to please Him. If He is pleased, if He says that "You kill your son," then we should be prepared to do that. That is called vairagya-vidya. Of course, never Krsna says like that, but actually, in the Battlefield of Kuruksetra, Arjuna was ordered, if not the son but the nephew. But his sons were also killed. So this is duty. So many people inquire, "Krsna was inducing people to fight." But this fight by the order of Krsna and the fight or war declared for the satisfaction of the politicians, they are not the same. We must always remember. They are not the same.

Just like Prahlada Maharaja. Prahlada Maharaja was standing, and his father was being killed. Is it a very good thing? Suppose if I am here and somebody kills me, and if you do not protest, is it a very good business? People will be surprised that "So many disciples are there, and this man is being killed, and nobody do anything?" So from material point of view, Prahlada Maharaja could have asked Nrsimhadeva, "My Lord, do not kill my father." He could have asked, and immediately his request would have been granted. But he did not do that. He was standing and seeing. But he knows that "This killing of the body of my father is not killing. I shall save him. I shall save him." That he did. When he was offered benediction, he did not take anything. He said, "My Lord, what shall I do, all this material benediction? I have seen in the case of my father. He was so strong that even the demigods were frightened for his presence. His position was so strong, and You finished it within a minute. So what is the benefit of taking? No, no. Please do not request me." But although he did not ask anything for his personal self, but he asked the Lord, prayed, that "One thing I request." "What is that?" "My father was a great demon, and he was against You. He has committed so many sinful life. So I know he'll have to suffer for these things. I request You to excuse him." This is Vaisnava son. "Oh, yes, immediately." Immediately.

So he knew that "What is this of asking for this material...? My father is not this body, but he has to suffer so many things for his sinful activities. I shall save him in due course of time." Therefore that is called putra. Putra means

pun-namno narakad yasmat
trayate pitaram sutah
tasmat putra iti proktah
svayam eva svayambhuva

This is represented by the alphabet pu, and trayate, tra. Combined together, putra. The putra's duty is to save the father from hellish condition of life. Therefore there is sraddha ceremony. So here is a putra. Real putra, Prahlada Maharaja, that he saved his father from the hellish condition of life. Similarly, a father should be the protector of his child not only simply by feeding him, making him very fat in this life, but from death. Na mocayed yah samupeta-mrtyum, pita na sa syat. One should not become father, one should not become mother, one should not become guru, one should not become relative, husband, and so many. The list is there. Why? If he cannot save his subordinate from imminent death. That is father; that is mother; that is guru. And how one can be saved from imminent death or repeated death? Simply by Krsna consciousness.

janma karma me divyam
yo janati tattvatah
tyaktva deham punar janma
naiti...
[Bg. 4.9]

You can save your son, your disciple, your relative or anyone whom you love, real affection. Then give him Krsna consciousness, and he'll be saved from death. That is the purport of this.

Thank you very much. (end)

"Always Think Of Krsna"

75/10/27 Nairobi, Bhagavad-gita 7.1

Prabhupada:

sri bhagavan uvaca
mayy asakta-manah partha
yogam yunjan mad-asrayah
asamsayam samagram mam
yatha jnasyasi tac chrnu
[Bg. 7.1]

Krsna, Bhagavan, the Supreme... Bhagavan means... Bhaga means opulence. Just like we use the word bhagyavan. From this bhagya, "fortune," comes the word bhaga. So personally the Supreme Bhagavan or Bhagavan... Bhagavan is never unfortunate. If somebody claims that he is Bhagavan, but Bhagavan is never unfortunate. He is always fortunate. Sannam bhaga itingana.

There are six kinds of opulences. Which one possesses in full, He is called Bhagavan. There is meaning. So we have several times explained: aisvaryasya samagrasya viryasya yasasah sriyah. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, because He is the proprietor of all wealth, sarva-loka-mahesvaram, He is the proprietor of all the planets, all the universes, so who can be fortunate than Him? Bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram [Bg. 5.29]. If you have got one lakh shillings or ten lakh shillings we think we have become very rich. But Krsna says, sarva-loka-mahesvaram: "I am the proprietor of all the planets." So who can become richer than Him? Therefore He is Bhagavan. The highest rich man, the richest person is called Bhagavan. Nobody can claim that he is the richest. That is not possible. So one who claims that "I am the richest. Nobody is equal to Me, and nobody is greater than Me," He is Bhagavan. Mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya: [Bg. 7.7] "Nobody is greater than Me." That is Bhagavan. Bhagavan cannot be so cheap that anyone can claim that "I am God. I am Bhagavan." That is cheating. He must prove first of all that he is the richest of everyone. Not only richest, aisvaryasya samagrasya viryasya, in strength also. Viryasya. Viryasya yasasah, also reputation.

Now, Krsna is, at least in this material world, in this planet, everyone knows Krsna. Who is such a person who is so famous all over the world? Especially since we have started this Krsna consciousness movement, anywhere we go, they chant, "Hare Krsna." As soon as they see us, our men, jokingly or seriously they chant, "Hare Krsna." When I was first coming to Nairobi from London, the plane stopped at Athens at twelve o'clock at night. So we got down and was in the public room, and some young men, immediately they began to chant, "Hare Krsna," at twelve o'clock. (laughter) So Krsna is so famous at twelve o'clock in Athens even. Who is such a person within this world? This is Bhagavan. Aisvaryasya samagrasya viryasya yasasah. Yasah mean reputation. He is so reputed. Anywhere Krsna is known.

So yasasah sriyah. Sriya, beauty. Krsna is so beautiful, nobody can surpass Him. Kandarpa-koti-kamaniya-visesa-sobham [Bs. 5.30]. Although He is blackish, but He is so beautiful, He enchants the most beautiful, Radharani. So aisvaryasya samagrasya viryasya yasasah sriyah. Sri means beauty. He is so beautiful. Therefore His name is Krsna. On account of His beauty, He attracts everyone. Beauty attracts. So nobody can be more beautiful than Krsna. Aisvaryasya yasasah sriyah, and jnana. Not only He is beautiful... Just like a flower, very beautiful to see but no good smell, no aroma -- useless. So Krsna is not only beautiful, but He is the most wise. He spoke Bhagavad-gita. Five thousand years ago He spoke. Still big, big scholars, religionists, philosophers, they studying. This is called jnana. Aisvaryasya samagrasya viryasya yasasah sriyah, jnana and vairagya. Vairagya means renouncement. So Krsna claims that He is the proprietor of all the planet, but if you think, "Where is Krsna? Let me find out. He is the proprietor," oh, that you cannot find out. Vairagya. Although He is the proprietor of all the planets, you won't find Him within this material world, although His authority is going on. Just like the president of your country is not to be seen everywhere, but his authority is going on. Mat-sthani sarva-bhutani naham tesu avasthitah. Everything is situated on Krsna's opulence, but not that you will find Krsna there. You will find Krsna there when you are advanced. Otherwise you will not find. Mat-sthani sarva-bhutani naham tesu avasthitah. Krsna is situated everything, but still, you cannot see in Krsna unless you have got eyes to see. That is Krsna consciousness movement, to give you the eyes to see Krsna everywhere. So how this thing can be done? So if you are serious, then you can see Krsna.

So that Krsna is advising in this verse in the Seventh Chapter or throughout the whole Bhagavad-gita. Krsna is instructing us how to understand Him. That is our only business. This human form of life is meant for understanding Krsna because we are very thickly related with Krsna, just like father and the son. This relation cannot be broken. Maybe son is out of home, son may have forgotten, but Krsna, the supreme father, He does not forget. He comes. Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata, tadatmanam srjamy aham [Bg. 4.7]. So Krsna is so kind that He has come to explain Himself, what He is. We should take advantage of it, because this human form of life is meant for understanding Krsna. Athato brahma jijnasa. That is the Vedanta-sutra. "Now you should inquire of the Absolute Truth." In the Bhagavata also it is said, jivasya tattva-jijnasa nartho yas ceha karmabhih. Jivasya, all living entities, especially the human being, his only business is inquire about the absolute knowledge, Krsna.

But we are missing the opportunity. Nature has given us the opportunity, possessing this human form of body after evolution, 8,400,000 different types of bodies, but there is no cultivation of this knowledge how this evolution is taking place, how many different species of life there are. We can see, but we don't see very seriously. I see there is a tree in front of my house and it is also a living entity. I am also living entity. I have got very nice house, apartment, living very comfortably, and the other living being, the tree, a few yards from me, he cannot move an inch. He has to stand up in scorching heat, in cold. He cannot protest. If you cut, he cannot cry. Of course, he feels, but he cannot do anything. This is also life and I am also life, so why these differences? But they do not consider, "How he has got this life, and how I have got this life?" There is no university education wherefrom they are coming, no knowledge. Still, they are passing on as great scientist, great philosopher. This is the position.

So our real business is to understand Krsna. So Krsna is explaining Himself. Then there is no difficulty. If you want to know me, you can imagine so many things: "Swamiji may be this. Swamiji may be that, like that, like this, like that." They are all imperfect. But if I tell you about myself openly that "I am like this," then your knowledge is perfect. Everyone says, "There is no God." Somebody says, "God is there, but He has no form," and somebody says, "He has any form you like. Imagine any form." In this way speculation is going on all over the world. Actually they are not interested in God. That is the plain simple thing. They do not want to know God, and they think there is no need of understanding. But that is the only need, to understand God. That they do not know. Therefore they are called fools and rascals, mudha. Mudho nabhijanati mam ebhyah param avyayam. So Krsna therefore left His instruction behind Him that "These mudhas, rascals, after studying Bhagavad-gita they may understand Me. I am keeping behind Me."

So we should take advantage of Bhagavad-gita. And even though we take advantage, we interpret in a different way. The same business is going on, how to kill Krsna. Instead of understanding Krsna, the endeavor is going on to kill Krsna. Asura. Just like Kamsa. He was always thinking of Krsna. His sister was pregnant, and it is foretold that "The eighth child of your sister will kill you." So he was thinking of Krsna, that "The eighth child...," but with a purpose to kill Him. That is the business of the asuras, how to wipe out Krsna, Kamsa philosophy. So we haven't got to follow Kamsa philosophy. We have to follow Krsna philosophy. Then our life will be successful. Anukulyena krsnanusilanam bhaktir uttama. Anukulyena, favorably, favorably to think of Krsna. As Krsna says, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. This is favorable. Krsna never said that "Like My uncle Kamsa, you think of Me, how to kill Me." Krsna does not say that. Krsna says, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. That will make your life successful.

So here also Krsna says,

mayy asakta-manah partha
yogam yunjan mad-asrayah
asamsayam samagram mam
yatha jnasyasi tac chrnu
[Bg. 7.1]

"My dear Arjuna, I have already explained in the Sixth Chapter that to become first-class yogi..." When Arjuna was advised by Krsna to become yogi, hatha-yogi... Hatha-yogi means to train the mind how to become Krsna conscious. The mind is disturbed always. This way, that way, mind is going, cancala, restless. So the hatha-yoga system is meant for persons who are too much under the bodily conception of life, that "I am this body." For them the hatha-yoga is there so that by practicing several sitting posture, controlling the mind, controlling the senses, they can concentrate on Krsna or Visnu, the Supreme Lord. This is yoga system. This is real yoga system. Dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa pasyanti yam yoginah [SB 12.13.1]. Who is the yogi? He is yogi who in meditation, dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa, always thinking of Krsna by the mind And gradually, when he is perfect in samadhi, trance, he can see Krsna.

premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena
santah sadaiva hrdayesu vilokayanti
yam syamasundaram acintya-guna-svarupam
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
[Bs. 5.38]

Syamasundara. You have come to this temple. Here is Syamasundara's form. You see always. Come as many times as you like. See the arati. Hear the kirtana. See the Deity nicely dressed. In this way the impression of God will be within your mind. Dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena. And when you have got this impression, if you always meditate upon Krsna as Krsna advises, man-mana bhava mad-bhaktah, man-manah, "Always think of Me," that is the perfect yoga system.

Therefore, at the end of the Sixth Chapter Krsna says, yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantar-atmana: "Of all the yogis..." The Krsna and Arjuna was talking. Krsna advised Arjuna to become a yogi, but Arjuna said that "Krsna, it is not possible for me. Because I am a politician, I am a soldier, I cannot sit down to practice yoga superficially. My mind will be disturbed in political affairs, in state affairs." So, cancalam hi manah krsna pramathi balavad drdham: "My mind is so restless, it is not possible." Then Krsna, to encourage him, said,

yoginam api sarvesam
mad-gatenantar-atmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah
[Bg. 6.47]

"Anyone who is thinking of Me always," mad-gatenantar-atmana sraddhavan sa me yuktatamah, "He is the first-class yogi."

So we are trying to make our students the first-class yogi. Always think of Krsna. This is our Krsna consciousness movement. And Krsna is also saying the same thing, mayy asakta-manah partha yogam. How you can think of Krsna always? That is not possible unless you become too much addicted. Just like if you love somebody, then you can think of him always. Artificially, if I say, "You think of Mr. John always," how you'll be possible? Artificially it is not possible. If you have got some love for Mr. John as a friend, as a lover or as somebody, or son or master or something, then you can think of Mr. John always. Otherwise it is not possible. So that thinking, you can revive. There is relationship with you, with Krsna. So you have to revive that relationship. It is not artificial. Just like these European, American boys, Krsna was unknown to them. They are coming from Christian, Jews. So what they had to do with the Krsna? They had nothing to do, but why they are mad after Krsna? They are no longer mad after anything. They have given up everything. Simply for preaching in your country, they have come here. They have not come as a businessman to exploit African resources like other Europeans. They have come to distribute Krsna consciousness. Why? Why the responsibility they have taken? Because they have learned to love Krsna. This is the basic principle. Anyone can understand. Otherwise, do you think they are poor men? They have come here to earn some money? They are not poor men. The Americans are the richest country. Any third-class man, he earns there 400,000's rupees, any third-class man, and what to speak of the first-class man. This is America. The lowest pay to a person, whatever qualification, he has, must be at least four thousand dollars. This is their law. So how they can be poor? There is no question of poverty in America. Nobody thinks, "What shall I do next? I have no money." Money is there on the street. Go and take it and spend. So why they have come here, taking so much troubles? Because they love Krsna, therefore they have come. This is the... Mayy asakta. Asakta, attached.

So we have to increase the attachment. Krsna is already attractive, but we are trying to go away from Krsna. This is our business. "Krsna may not touch me." We are so clever that "Krsna may not touch me." This is maya. Big, big scholars, big, big politicians, they are writing comments on Krsna's book, Bhagavad-gita, but their aim is very acute, that "Krsna may not touch me." This is going on. And then why they are writing on Krsna's book? Now, that is their business. Because this book, Gita, is very famous, so if they can distribute their nonsense philosophy through Gita, it will be taken very easily. Otherwise they do not know Krsna; they do not know what is Bhagavad-gita. But they take advantage of the popularity of Bhagavad-gita and push their nonsense philosophy through Bhagavad-gita. The purpose is to kill Krsna, Kamsa philosophy. So, then, that way, they'll never get Krsna. They'll never understand Krsna. Krsna says that "If you want to know Me," asamsayam samagram, "if you want to know Me in full, completely, without any doubt, then you have to follow this yoga system," mayy asakta-manah partha yogam yunjan mad-asrayah. Otherwise it is not possible.

So all these nonsense speculators... We use purposefully "nonsense," because they have no sense, simply speculating. God is unlimited. How you...? Your mind is limited. What you can speculate? "May be like this, may be like that," that's all. "Perhaps it is like this." All simply theoretical. It is never possible to know Krsna, God, perfectly and completely by the speculating method. It is not possible. If you want to know Krsna, or God -- when we speak of Krsna, God -- so then Krsna's formula must be followed, as it is said here, mayy asakta-manah partha yogam yunjan mad-asrayah. The principal factor is to become attached to Krsna. Attached means become a lover of Krsna. Then you can understand asamsayam, without any doubt. Without any doubt. Otherwise you will find there are so many hundreds of religious system all over the world. Ask anyone who are their follower, "Do you know what is God?" They'll never be able to answer clearly, because they do not know God. And if you do not know God, then what is the meaning of your religion?

Religion means to know God. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. One must know God, and one must know what God desires. That is religion. Just like you must know your government, and you must know what government wants, expects from you. If you do that, then you are a good citizen. And if you don't know what is government, if you do not know what government desires, expects from you, then what is the meaning of your good citizenship? There is no meaning. Similarly, to become religious without any clear understanding of God is bogus, is cheating. That is cheating. That is not religion. Therefore Krsna said that "If you want to know Me," asamsayam, "without any doubt..." God may be personal, impersonal, or this, that, but you must know it perfectly well. Don't say, "Perhaps it may be like this. Perhaps may be like this..." That is imperfect knowledge. That is no knowledge. So therefore Krsna personally says, mayy asakta-manah partha yogam yunjan. This is a yogi. This is the first-class yogi. Krsna has explained that yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantar-atmana sraddhavan bhajate yo mam sa me yukta... [Bg. 6.47]. So sraddhavan bhajate yo mam, one who is worshiping Krsna with sraddha, with faith, complete faith, bhajate, and serving Him, so who is that person? A devotee. Without being a devotee, how with faith and adherence and reverence and obedience you can serve Krsna unless you love Krsna?

So mayy asakta-manah partha. We have got attraction for so many things in this material world. Somebody has got attraction for his family, somebody has got attraction for his wife, children, or somebody has got attraction for some sporting, or somebody has attraction for his country, so on, so on. We have got attraction. That is not a new thing. We have got attraction, but we have got attraction in different subject matter, material. So this yoga system, bhakti-yoga system, means you should be only attracted by Krsna. That is wanted. Attraction is there. Nobody can say that "I have no attraction for anything." That is false. Everyone has got attraction. If you have nothing to be attracted, then you keep a cat and a dog to be attracted. That is the nature. Especially in the Western countries we see. He has no family, but he keeps one pet dog or pet cat because he wants to be attracted by somebody. This is nature. So here Krsna says that "You have got already attraction, but in false things which will not exist. You turn that attraction unto Me. Then you'll get pleasure." You are attracted to something for getting some pleasure. So that pleasure is interrupted because we have posed our attraction in some false things. You have to change that attraction to the real thing, Krsna. Then you'll be happy. Mayy asakta. Mayy asakta. Mayi: "Unto Me," Krsna says personally. If you... Attraction means you have to engage your mind. Mayy asakta-manah. Attraction does not come in the air. The mind, mind fully engaged in something, is called attraction.

So this is yoga, bhakti-yoga. And this yoga has to be executed... Krsna says, mad-asrayah. "You have to execute this yoga system, taking shelter of Me." "Me" means either Krsna Himself or His representative. Just like Krsna says in the Fourth Chapter, evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo viduh [Bg. 4.2]. So you have to learn this bhakti-yoga directly under Krsna or under the direction of Krsna's representative. So if you do this, then asamsaya, without any doubt, and samagram, in completeness, mayy asakta, asamsayam samagram mam yatha jnasyasi tac chrnu [Bg. 7.1]. So Krsna will explain, item by item, how you can increase your attraction for Krsna. Then you will be able to execute the bhakti-yoga system under the guidance of Krsna directly or directed by His representative. Then it will be successful.

So one of the Krsna's representatives, Srila Rupa Gosvami, he has defined how this attachment can be increased. He has explained adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sangah. Adau sraddha. Just like you have come here with some sraddha, some faith. This is required. And you have to increase this sraddha, this faith, more and more. How it can be increased? Sadhu-sanga, to intermingle with the persons who are engaged in Krsna consciousness. Adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sangah. Sadhu means who is a devotee of Krsna. Otherwise he is not sadhu. Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita, api cet su-duracaro bhajate mam ananya-bhak sadhur eva sa mantavyah [Bg. 9.30]. That is sadhu. You cannot create sadhu unless he is devotee of Krsna. Bhajate mam ananya-bhak. He is sadhu. So if you want to increase your advancement in Krsna consciousness, then you have to intermingle with the person who is sadhu, who are sadhu, mean devotees. Adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sangah. But sadhu-sangah... Then gradually you will be inclined to execute devotional service as the sadhus are doing, chanting Hare Krsna mantra, offering arati, offering foodstuff, dressing, so many things. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam arcanam vandanam dasyam... [SB 7.5.23]. The nine different types of methods, that is called bhajana-kriya. And adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sango 'tha bhajana-kriya tato 'nartha-nivrttih syat. Then anartha, all unwanted things which you have learned unfortunately, that will be finished. If you mix with, intermingle with sadhu, then you will be purified, and things which are not required at all -- artificially you have learned by bad association -- that will be... Anartha-nivrttih syat. Nobody learns to smoke from the very birth. He has to eat something. He drinks milk, the child. He doesn't say, "Give me a cigarette," but you have learned it by bad association. This is called anartha. You have learned it, drinking tea, coffee, not from the beginning of your life but by bad association. Then this is anartha. So if you engage yourself in devotional service, then these things will disappear automatically. You'll find in our temple, we are cooking so many nice preparations. Perhaps you have tasted some of them. But we are not preparing tea or coffee or meat -- nothing. These are anarthas. What is the necessity?

So anartha-nivrttih syat. Then you become purified. Then you become... When anartha-nivrttih syat, when you are free from all these unwanted nonsense things -- illicit sex, intoxication, gambling and meat-eating... This is anartha. Then you, being purified, then your faith in Krsna becomes confirmed. Anartha-nivrttih syat. Adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sango 'tha bhajana-kriya anartha-nivrttih..., tato nistha. Then you become firmly fixed up: "Yes, I shall continue, Krsna." Nistha. How this nistha, artificial? No. Ruci, taste. You cannot do without Krsna consciousness. That is called tato nistha rucis tatah, bhavah, "Oh, Krsna is so exalted." Sadhakanam ayam premnah pradurbhave bhavet kramah. This is the step-by-step increasing perfection of Krsna consciousness. And when you are on the perfectional stage of Krsna consciousness, then your human life is perfect. This is Krsna consciousness movement.

Thank you very much. [break]

Reduce sex. Because material life means sex. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham [SB 7.9.45]. In the material world, not only in the human society but also in the birds, beast, animal, insect -- everywhere the sex impulse is very strong. And if you indulge in sex life, then you'll be complicated more and more in this material body. This is the law of nature. Therefore whole Vedic civilization is meant for curtailing sex life. First of all brahmacari, no sex life. First of all training is brahmacari, how to train him to remain without sex. That is brahmacari. Tapasa brahmacaryena [SB 6.1.13]. Tapasya means to remain brahmacari. This is tapasya. It is very difficult. Therefore it is called tapasya, because the whole world is attracted by sex life, pumsah striya mithuni-bhavam, whole world, not only in this planet, every planet, even in the demigods' planet.

So our this Krsna consciousness movement means not bodily consciousness. The material world means bodily consciousness: how to keep the body in comfortable. But that is not possible. Body means misery. You cannot keep it comfortable. That is maya. It will never be comfortable, but they are all trying to make it comfortable. This is called maya. Klesada asa dehah. So long you'll have a material body you'll have to suffer. So this Krsna consciousness movement is not on the bodily platform. It is on the spiritual platform. To come to the spiritual platform, it is necessary that you reduce or make nil sex life. So if one remains brahmacari throughout the whole life it becomes very easy for him to go back to home, back to Godhead. This is the secret. Therefore the whole Vedic civilization is based on first of all brahmacari, no sex life. Grhastha, that is also very regulated. Only for begetting child one can have sex life, father, mother, man and woman. So dharmaviruddho kamo 'smi. In the Bhagavad-gita you will find Krsna says that "Sex life which is prescribed by the religious system, that is, I am." Otherwise it is illicit sex. So illicit sex, there is punishment. These things are there. So tapasya means tapasa brahmacaryena samena damena va [SB 6.1.13]. You have to control. The more one controls, he becomes advanced in spiritual culture. The yoga system means yoga indriya-samyamah. "Yoga means how to control the senses." This is yoga system, and therefore Krsna says, mayy asakta-manah partha. So sex indulgence is against spiritual advancement of life. Therefore you have seen that the brahmacaris, they go there. It becomes very easy to enter into the spiritual kingdom. So that you can do here also. If you increase your attraction for Krsna, then naturally you lose attraction for sex. That is Krsna consciousness. Therefore Krsna's name is Madana-mohana. Madana means sex life. He can enchant even madana. So these are things which the devotee will learn by studying the literature. But even without studying, if you sincerely chant Hare Krsna mantra under regulation, everything, all good qualification will come.

Devotee (1): Srila Prabhupada, you said that if we asked the other religious sects what is God... [break]

Prabhupada: Nothing to do with any physiological, anatomical. We have to see that we are advancing in Krsna consciousness. So we have to eat something. We have to eat the remnants of foodstuff taken by Krsna. Prasade sarva-duhkhanam hanir asyopajayate. That is our policy. We do not see to the physiological, anatomical condition. That is not our business. That is automatically done.

Devotee (2): Srila Prabhupada (indistinct).

Brahmananda: He says that according to Krsna consciousness philosophy, the first living being was Brahma, and in the Christian Bible it says Adam was the first man. So he wants to know if in Krsna consciousness scriptures there is any mention of Adam.

Prabhupada: Why you want to tally with Bible and Krsna conscious literature? Do you think that Krsna conscious literature has to tally with Bible? There is, that "There is first living being, Brahma," and Brahma was also married couple. So you can take it as Adam and Eve. That's all. (laughter) Why do you want cent percent tally? But this nonsense theory, that there was a monkey first of all, (laughter) Darwin's theory, and from monkey, human being has come, this is nonsense. So any other question?

Indian man (1): Swamiji, some religions, the guru, if someone wants to be his disciple, he is being given a sort of beads by the guru himself. Is it possible to get beads through your worship?

Prabhupada: Yes. That is our process. When we accept a disciple we give him beads, we give him direction.

Indian man (2): This mantra we chant for Krsna and Rama both, but this movement glorifies the Krsna's pastimes and not much of Rama.

Prabhupada: Yes, there is... Vaisnavas... Ramayana is also approved. Ramayana is also Vedic literature, Valmiki Ramayana, not any other. So we discuss Valmiki Ramayana. In the Bhagavata there is discussion about Ramacandra's activities. So we are giving Srimad-Bhagavatam. There is Ramacandra's activities there. Where is Ramacandra, which planet He is now, that is also described in the Bhagavatam. So it is not that we are without Rama. And our direct worshipable Rama is Balarama, Krsna-Balarama. We have opened the temple of Krsna-Balarama in Vrndavana. So Rama is there. Ramadi-murtisu kala-niyamena tisthan nanavataram akarod bhuvanesu kintu [Bs. 5.39]. Krsna has got many, many incarnation. Rama is also one of them. So when we speak of Krsna, it means including all the incarnation -- Rama, Nrsimha, Varaha -- everything. Ramadi... Therefore ramadi, "taking Rama as the original," murtisu, "in such forms," ramadi-murtisu kala-niyamena tisthan [Bs. 5.39], "He is existing." Krsna is not alone. He is always existing with His different incarnations, Rama, Nrsimha, Varaha, Matsya, Kurma -- so many. So either you worship Krsna or Rama, Nrsimha, Varaha, Matsya, Kurma, anyone you can worship. We don't say that don't worship Rama. We never say, because Rama and Krsna, the same. We shall... In future we have got a hope we shall start an Rama-Laksmana murti, yes, in some temple. That is our worshipable Deity. We have got in my room Lord Ramacandra's murti, Sita-Rama. So it is not that we are neglecting worship of Ramacandra. There is. Yes? Somebody else?

Indian man (3): Srila Prabhupada, Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is controller of everything, whole universe, everything. So why He is having these demigods to help Him? Because He's controller, He has got power to control whole universe, and why there are all these demigods? Why He can't control this universe?

Prabhupada: He can control everyone, but He has given little freedom that He does not interfere the freedom given to you. Otherwise He can control. Just like in Bhagavad-gita, you will find, after explaining Bhagavad-gita to Arjuna He is giving the freedom to Arjuna, yathecchasi tatha kuru: "Whatever you like, you do." He is supreme controller, He can force him to do it, but he doesn't do that. The little independence you have got, you have to utilize it favorably. Therefore Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja: [Bg. 18.66] "You do this." He can forcibly make me to do that, but He doesn't do that because He has given little independence, and He wants that voluntarily we surrender, not by force. That is wanted. Otherwise it is not that He cannot control you. He can control everyone.

Devotee (3): Srila Prabhupada, when we are preaching to Christian people or to Muslim people, is there advantage in being familiar with their scriptures or simply Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam?

Prabhupada: We are not preaching to Christian or Hindu or Muslim. We are preaching to human being. We do not see, "Here is a Christian. Here is a Muslim. Here is a Hindu. Here is a white man. Here is a black man." No. Every living being, his duty is to understand God. This is our preaching. This is our preaching, that "You are living being. You are part and parcel of Krsna. This designation, that ‘You are Hindu,' ‘You are Muslim,' ‘You are Christian,' ‘You are this' -- these are all designations. Actually you are living being, part and parcel of Krsna. Therefore your main duty is to understand Krsna." This is our preaching. We are not going to convert Hindu into Muslim, Muslim into Christian. No, that is not our... That is not our business. He may think that he is Christian, he is Hindu, he is Muslim, but we think that he is a spirit soul, part and parcel of God. That is stated in the...

vidya-vinaya-sampanne
brahmane gavi hastini
suni caiva sva-pake ca
panditah sama-darsinah
[Bg. 5.18]

If one is learned pandita, he does not see Hindu, Muslim, Christian. I went to America, I did not go there to turn the Christian to become Hindu. No, I never said that. Did I say, any, anyone, that "You are Christian. You become a Hindu"? No, never I said. That is not my business.

Indian man (4): Just now you said we are all part and parcel of God. What would you say is God?

Prabhupada: That we have explained, what is God. Asamsayam samagram mam yatha jnasyasi tac chrnu [Bg. 7.1]. You have to become God conscious. Then you will understand what is God. It is not a so trifle thing you ask me and, one minute, you understand God. That is foolishness. You have to study the science of God. God is not so cheap.

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascin mam vetti tattvatah
[Bg. 7.3]

Out of many thousands of men, one wants to become perfect, and out of many millions of perfect men, one can understand God. So God is not so cheap thing. Therefore Krsna recommends,

mayy asakta-manah partha
yogam yunjan mad-asrayah
asamsayam samagram mam
yatha jnasyasi tac chrnu
[Bg. 7.1]

If you want to know God without any doubt, completely, then you have to adopt this yoga. So first of all come to the yoga. Then speak of God understanding. It is not so cheap thing.

Indian man (5): Krsna consciousness is the oldest teaching of God, or Krsna.

Prabhupada: Yes. That is mayy asakta-manah. That is explained.

Indian man (5): But the Gita was written about five thousand years ago.

Prabhupada: No. You have not read Bhagavad-gita. Did you read? Did you read Bhagavad-gita?

Indian man (5): Yes, I read some portion.

Prabhupada: Then why do you say like that, five thousand years?

Indian man (5): All the scriptures were written (indistinct).

Prabhupada: Hm? What does he say?

Indian man (5): Then how come in the locational(?), archaeological and ontological records, Krsna consciousness is not mentioned by other religions?

Prabhupada: Krsna consciousness is always there. You are calculating with reference to your age, but Krsna consciousness is there. In the Fourth Chapter, you read, imam vivasvate yogam proktavan aham avyayam: [Bg. 4.1] "I spoke this Krsna consciousness science first of all to the sun-god." Then how do you say five thousand years? There is reference to the Manu. And if we take the, all these advanced calculation, then it becomes that forty millions of years ago Bhagavad-gita was spoken by Krsna to the sun-god. Have you got forty millions' history? (laughter) You haven't got even five thousand years' even history. Your history is so imperfect. So don't bring it into historical reference. It is eternal. (end)
