Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Pradyumna: Similarly, a person who wants to enjoy family life or the worldly life of so-called enjoyment is compared with the camel. Materialistic life is full of thorns, so one should live only by the prescribed method of Vedic regulations, just to make the best use of a bad bargain."

Prabhupada: Hm. Just like if you are passing through thorns, you must be very careful. Otherwise the thorns will be stuck up with your garment, and you will be inconvenienced. It is said in the Vedas, ksurasya dhara nisita duratyaya. Just like we shave with razor. Razor is very sharp. So if we can carefully handle the razor, we get our cheeks very cleansed, that business is done. But little inattention, immediately cut and there will be blood. Little inattention. That example is given. Ksurasya dhara nisita duratyaya durgam pathas tat kavayo vadanti. The path of salvation is very difficult. Just like we are trying to go back to home, back to Godhead, Krsna. The path is very difficult. Ksurasya dhara nisita duratyaya durgam. Durgam means very difficult to pass over. But little attention will save you. Little attention, that "I am passing through a very dangerous way, so I must be very careful." So our attention should always be how we are executing our spiritual life.

That is very simple. We observe strictly the regulative principles and chant sixteen rounds minimum. That will save us. But if we become inattentive to these principles, then there is chance of being pricked by the thorns. There are so many thorns all over. Or the same example. Ksurasya dhara. You shave, make your face very cleansed, but little inattention, immediately produce blood. We should be very careful. Go on.

Pradyumna: "Life in the material world is maintained by sucking one's own blood. The central point of attraction for material enjoyment is sex life. To enjoy sex life is to suck one's own blood, and there is not much more to be explained in this connection. The camel also sucks his own blood while chewing the thorny twigs. The thorns that the camel eats cuts the tongue of the camel. And so blood begins to flow within the camel's mouth. The thorns mixed with fresh blood create a taste for the foolish camel, and so he enjoys the thorn-eating business with false pleasure. Similarly, the great business magnates, industrialists who work very hard to earn money by different ways and questionable means, eat the thorny result of their action mixed up with their own blood. Therefore the Bhagavatam has situated these diseased souls along with the camels."

Prabhupada: They take risk, so much risk, for earning money and sense enjoyment. The thief, the burglars, they risk their life. They go to steal to a man's house, and it is known that as soon as he is known, "He has come," the man, the proprietor of the house, may immediately shoot him. That risk he takes. So not only the burglar and thieves, every one of us. It is stated padam padam yad vipadam [SB 10.14.58]. In every step there is danger. Every step. We are running our motorcars very fast, seventy miles, one hundred miles speed, but any moment there can be great danger. So actually there cannot be any peace in material life. That is not possible. Samasrita ye pada-pallava-plavam. We have to take therefore shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord. If we want to be happy, if we want to be peaceful, then this is the only way. And the... Sva-vid-varahostra-khara... And in the previous verse, kim grame pasavo 'pare, na khadanti na mehanti. This eating, sleeping, mating, so it is criticized: "Do the cats and dogs and the camels, they do not eat?"

They also eat. They enjoy. As the camel is enjoying thorny twigs. His enjoyment, that is his enjoyment. Na khadanti na mehanti. Now, another enjoyment. Sex life, discharge. Na mehanti. Again it is described. These are very terse criticism. You see. A fact. Sex enjoyment means you discharge your semina. Your thing, not others. And it is said by medical science, some pounds of blood makes one drop of semina. That means, suppose you allow, if you allow somebody to take your blood, pounds of blood, would you like to do that? Unless it is... Nowadays, blood bank, there is going on. But anyone, if he wants to take your blood, you will protest. But our enjoyment is by giving our own blood. Tul... There is a Hindi poet, din ka dakini, rat ka baghini, palak palak rahe cuse duniya sab bhora hoye, ghara ghara baghini puje (?). It is actual for the materialistic person, that there is an animal, din ka dakini, at, during daytime she is witch, and at night she is tigress.

So din ka dakini, rat ka baghini, palak palak rahe cuse. The witches, they also, by their black art, they suck the blood of children. Do you know that? There are witches. You know? I am asking Svarupa Damodara. The kamekha (?) witches, from the black art. The Putana was like that. They suck the blood of children by some mantra. So din ka dakini, rat ka baghini. It is pointing out to one's wife. During daytime she is dakini, witches, and at night she is tigress. So Tulasi dasa says that. . . Tulasi dasa's life is very interesting. Therefore he had very bad experience of his wife. Everyone. So baghini. Nobody keeps a tigress to suck one's blood, but Tulasi dasa says, duniya sab bhora hoye. The whole world, being mad, they keep one tigress. Palak palak rahe cuse. In every moment, sucking blood. This criticism is for the materialistic person. Those who are spiritually advancing, this criticism does not apply. For materialistic person, this agent of sucking blood is their happiness, is their happiness.

That is the real fact. Therefore the Vedic system of civilization is seventy-five percent life of celibacy. In the brahmacari system there is no connection with woman. Student life. Student life, if one remains brahmacari, he becomes determined. His brain becomes very receptive. Therefore, in the brahmacari system, complete celibacy, no connection with woman. So up to twenty-five years, if he does not discharge semen, he becomes very stout, strong, and his health is built up for whole life, and he becomes so intelligent that anything he will hear, he will remember immediately. Then after brahmacari system, if one cannot remain brahmacari, naisthika-brahmacari, then the spiritual master allows him to marry. That is grhastha-asrama. So when one is complete, fit for sex life, he begets children, male children, and after twenty-five years, the child becomes grown up, so he retires. In this way, brahmacari, grhastha, vanaprastha, and sannyasa. The whole aim is Visnu, how to go back to home, back to Godhead.

Not like, living like this, animals. Sva-vid-varahostra-khara. Not to live. That is not human life. Sva means dependent. "Unless somebody gives me food, I cannot live." That is the life of a dog. A street dog is never happy. One dog who has got master, he is happy. That is sva. Vid-varaha means eating everything, anything nonsense eatable. Varaha, vid-varaha. Sva-vid-varaha-ustra. Ustra means chewing or drinking his own blood, and he thinks it is very tasteful. And similarly ass. Ass is working hard for the washerman, not for himself, and still, he thinks he is happy. Therefore these four nice animals has been exemplified. That is our life. The karmis are compared with the ass. Big, big businessmen, day and night working hard, earning money, not for himself. What he will eat? Two capatis, that's all. Or little milk or little... Not that he has earned 1000 dollars every day and he will eat it. No. He will eat, out of that 1000 dollars, he will eat fifty cents, and balance will be eaten by others.

You see. But still, he is working hard. And the example is ass. The ass takes a morsel of grass. It is worth nothing. The ass can get anywhere the morsel of grass. But still, he thinks that the washerman is feeding me. So he remains there. And in Mexico you found some asses, carrying loads. So they are carrying loads, very heavy loads, tons, for that morsel of grass, which he can get anywhere. But he thinks, "Oh, I will die. If my master does not give me a morsel of grass, I will die. So let me remain here and carry all the big loads." You see. Similarly, the karmis, they remain at home. They think that "My wife, my children, my family -- without them, I shall die. So I have to work to maintain them like an ass." That's all. The karmis, they are working, accumulating bank balance, more, more, more, more, more, more. But forgetting the real mission of life. Therefore ass. Ass means fool. Whenever one man is called, "You are ass," that means he's a fool. So this human form of life, so valuable...

To realize Krsna and go back to Him, that should be our main business. But these karmis, they do not know what is the mission of this human form of life. They are busy working hard, day and night, for a morsel of grass. That's all. Yan maithunadi-grha... There are many other verses. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham [SB 7.9.45]. So sastra, intelligence, knowledge, means one should study everything very critically, "What is my position? What is my duty?" We should not be like the animals. Sva-vid-varahostra-khara. Now we have got our great personalities, leaders. They are praised, eulogized, our, these political leaders. "Our Hitler," "Our Gandhi," "Our Churchill," "Our Nixon." But sastra says these leaders, those who are not spiritual leaders, those who cannot give our life, they are worshiped by these classes of animals, animals. These so-called leaders, politicians, they are eulogized very much by whom? By these class of men: dogs, camels, asses and...

What is the other one?

Devotees: Hogs.

Prabhupada: Hog. So this is the verdict of... That means one who does not know whom to eulogize, whom to give honor, they give votes to these classes of men, without any knowledge of Krsna. They are becoming the great philosophers, leaders, scientists. They have no knowledge of Krsna, no knowledge of God. Still, they are leading the society. And who praise them? This class of men-dogs, hogs, camels, and asses. This is the verdict. Now you can challenge. You can talk, if it is right or wrong. This is the challenge given by Bhagavatam, that "Persons who have no knowledge of Krsna consciousness, they are praised by these dogs, hogs, camels, and asses." This is the challenge. Now how can you refute it? Can you refute it? This is a great challenge. We are not only... We are accepting some rascal as God, as incarnation of God. So who accept this so-called God? These classes of men. These classes of men: camel, hogs, dogs. So by the vote of camels, dogs, hogs, one cannot become God.

That is not possible. God is a different thing. So we should not be misled. If some incarnation come, "God," who is accepting? These camels, dogs, and hogs and asses. So what is the value? What is the value of their vote? No. Formerly, the votes were taken by highly saintly persons, brahmanas. Just like Prthu Maharaja's father Vena Maharaja. He was disapproved by the brahmanas and the saintly persons, and immediately he was dethroned and killed. Not the public vote. Not vox populi. Vote should be taken from the highly elevated persons, not from the lower-class dogs and asses. What is the value of their vote? What they can select? Vote should be taken... Just like Krsna. Krsna wanted that Maharaja Yudhisthira should be on the throne. That is vote. So nowadays, a vote is franchised. Any common man, any rascal can vote. So how he can elect nice man? That is not possible. Therefore, if you want real government who can lead you back to home, back to Godhead...

That is perfect government. That is the duty of the government. To see the citizens happy in this life. They have no grievance for their living condition. They are happy. At the same time, they are preparing for going back to home, back to Godhead. That is good government. And the government who simply levies taxes somehow or other... Every year, the budget is increasing tax. "You give us tax, and you go to hell. It doesn't matter. You give us tax." And the tax is divided amongst themselves. That is government. Whatever... We know in India, the tax collected, eighty percent is spent among the government servants. That's all.

So this is the position of Kali-yuga. Mleccha rajanya-rupino bhaksayisyanti prajas te. That is predicted in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, that in Kali-yuga the mlecchas, means the rejected from human society, such persons, rogues and fools and rascals, they will take the post of king. Rajanya-rupinah. They are unworthy to be kicked, but they will take the post of government.

Rajanya-rupinah. And what will be their business? Bhaksayisyanti prajas te. They will eat the citizens. That's all. Vital force. Vital force, blood-sucking, tax. Durbhiksa-kara-piditah [SB 12.2.9]. In one side, there will be scarcity of supply. In other side, they will be perplexed with taxes. These are going to be happened. Kara-piditah gacchanti giri-kananam. And they will give up their homely life and will go to the forest, to the hills. Just like every year you hear. Now it is going on. Just like in Vietnam. The poor people, they are sometimes evacuating this place and evacuating... vacating this place, vacating that place. They are troubled. The politicians, they are making their own plan, and the poor people ... We have seen. When partition was made in India, all poor Hindus and Muslims, they were in trouble. And the leaders, they were in happy mood in their apartment, ordering and eating very nicely, butter and bread. That's all. This is going on. Therefore the only opportunity of becoming happy is that you preach this Krsna consciousness movement amongst the people, so if the people become educated in Krsna consciousness, and if they decide that "We shall vote for Krsna conscious leader," then there will be happiness.

Just like Prthu Maharaja, the king. We were discussing. So the Krsna consciousness movement comprehends all sides of life. It is not that a stereotype "churchianity," weekly going to the church and come back and do all. No. It is embracing all sides of our life. But the only aim is how to go back to home, back to Godhead. So we have to educate these classes of men, sva-vid-varaha-ustra-khara, these class of men: dogs, hogs, camels, and the asses. The world is full of these classes of men, and you have to educate them. Your responsibility is very great. You have to make an ass a devotee, a camel a devotee, a dog a devotee, a hog a devotee. This is your mission. Next.

Pradyumna: "The ass is another animal who is celebrated as the greatest fool, even amongst the animals. The ass works very hard and carries burdens of the maximum weight without making profit for itself. Footnote: Human life is meant for earning values. This life is called arthadam, or that which can deliver values. And what is the greatest value of life? It is returning home, back to Godhead, as indicated in the Bhagavad-gita (8.15). One's selfishness must be aimed at the point of going back to Godhead. The ass does not know its self-interest, and it works very hard for others only. Similarly, a person who works very hard for others only, forgetting his personal interest available in the human form of life, is compared to the ass. In the Brahma-vaivarta Purana it is said:

asitim caturas caiva laksams tan jiva-jatisu
bhramadbhih purusaih prapyam manusyam janma-paryayat
tad apy abhalatam jatah tesam atmabhimaninam
varakanam anasritya govinda-carana-dvayam

Prabhupada: Hm. This is very important verse. You can repeat this. One may take it by heart.

asitim caturas caiva laksams tan jiva-jatisu
bhramadbhih purusaih prapyam manusyam janma-paryayat
tad apy abhalatam jatah tesam atmabhimaninam
varakanam anasritya govinda-carana-dvayam

Repeat it. (Devotees say the verse.) So asitim means eighty. Asitim caturah. Caturah means four. So eighty-four. Eighty plus four means eighty-four. Laksams. Laksams means hundreds of thousand. So eighty-four hundreds of thousands. Asitim caturas caiva laksams tan jiva-jatisu. Jiva-jati. This is different species of living entities. Jiva-jati. The hog species, the ass species, the dog species, just like they have got species. Jiva-jatisu. So in different species of living entities, they are counted, eighty-four hundreds of thousands, or 8,400,000. Bhramadbhih. Bhramadbhih means transmigrating, wandering one after another. Jalaja nava-laksani sthavara laksa-vimsati. There are 900,000 species within the water.

Then trees, plants. In this way, passing through different species of life, the living entity... Jiva-jatisu. Jiva-jatisu, in different species of life, he is transmigrating, one after another, one after another. Bhramadbhih purusaih. Purusa. Purusa means the living entity. The living entity is described here "purusa" because he wants to enjoy. Purusa is the enjoyer. Actually enjoyer is Krsna, but we are imitating Krsna. We want to become God. That is the Mayavada philosophy. That is our trouble. I am trying to imitate something which I cannot. Suppose if I want to be God, is it possible to become God? But they are trying to be. Bhramadbhih purusaih. So in this way, for this misunderstanding, he is falsely trying to have happiness through so many species of life. "Let me enter this life, let me enter that life, that life, that life, that ..." In this way he falls down. He is fallen already from Vaikuntha planet. He is fallen in this material world, and he is again trying to make progress.

Prapyam manusyam. In this way, after many, many births, he gets this human form of life. Prapyam manusyam janma-paryayat. By the graduation, gradual evolution process. This is real evolution. Not the body is changing. Body is already there. Jiva-jatisu. The jiva-jati, species, are already there. There is a defect of Darwin's theory. He does not want, he does not know that the living entity is passing through different types of body. Not that the body is changing. Bodies are already there. Bhramadbhih purusaih prapyam manusyam janma-paryayat. Paryayat means chronological. What is called, one after another?

Karandhara: Sequential?

Prabhupada: Sequential, yes. That's all right. Tad api. Tad api means that human form of life. Abhalatam, becomes spoiled. Tad api. Once missed, again come down. Circle. Circle. Just like merry-go-round. So you are sometimes very high and immediately low down. So this circle of birth and death in different species of life is going on, and this human form of life is a chance to get out of this cycle of birth and death. Is a chance. It is by nature's arrangement, by Krsna's arrangement, that these living entities, who have come here in this material world for false happiness, material happiness, and they are entrapped in this birth and death problem, transmigrating from one type of life to another type of life... Here is a chance for the human being. And Krsna comes to the human being, and He... "Here is a chance, Bhagavad-gita." Krsna gives them. So if, after reading Bhagavad-gita, anasritya govinda-carana-dvayam, who is neglecting... He is neglecting means that tesam atmabhimaninam varakanam.

Varaka means fools or childish. We are thinking that "I am this body." Such fools cannot understand how to surrender to Krsna. Therefore, tad apy abhalatam jatah tesam atmabhimaninam, varakanam anasritya, without taking shelter, govinda-carana-dvayam, the lotus feet of Govinda. So bahunam janmanam ante [Bg. 7.19]. We get this chance, and if we are not educated by our teachers, by our fathers, by our leaders, by our government men, by our gurus, by our relatives, how to accept the lotus feet of Krsna, who is canvassing... Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja: [Bg. 18.66] "Give up all this nonsense engagement, trying to become Krsna, or God. Give up this. Surrender unto Me." This is education. This is education. The father should give education at home. The leaders should give education in institution. The politicians should give education in their assemblies, congress. The guru should give education how to surrender to Krsna. The father should educate, the mother should educate.

Therefore Bhagavata says, na mocayed yah samupeta... gurur na sa syaj janani na sa syat pita na sa syat. There are some negative definitions, that there are so-called gurus, so-called swamis, but Bhagavata says that "You should not become a swami or guru. Kindly don't become if you cannot save your disciple from the imminent danger of birth and death." Gurur na sa syat. This is the injunction. "No rascal should become a guru unless he can save his disciple from the cycle of birth and death." Or, in other words, anyone who wants to become guru, if he cannot teach his disciples how to surrender, govinda-carana-dvayam, anasritya, how to take shelter of the lotus feet of Govinda, he should not become guru. That is cheating. That is cheating. Similarly, one should not become father. The father and mother should have determination that "The child I produce, I give birth, if I cannot teach him Krsna conscious, surrender to Krsna, I shall not beget any child."

This is real contraceptive method. Not to beget child like cats and dogs. Sva-vid-varahostra-khara. So Bhagavata says, "One should not become father, one should not become mother, one should not become relative, one should not become king, one should not become guru, if they cannot save their dependants from this cycle of birth and death." This is the meaning of this verse. Anasritya govinda-carana-dvayam, varakanam atmabhimaninam. So after wandering through these so many species of life and so dangerous... There are two million species of plant life, tree's life. Just see. You have to stand for so many years. A great opportunity, this human form of life. Don't waste. Don't become dogs and hogs and asses and camels. Become devotee. Just surrender to Krsna. Make your life successful. Thank you. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Devotee: (leads chanting, etc.) Translation: "As a sleeping person acts according to the body manifested in his dreams and accepts it to be himself, so one identifies with his present body, which he acquired because of his past religious or irreligious actions, and is unable to know his past or future lives."

Prabhupada:

yathajnas tamasa yukta
upaste vyaktam eva hi
na veda purvam aparam
nasta-janma-smrtis tatha
 [SB 6.1.49]

So ignorance, a very good example is given here, that in dream we forget everything, that I am Mr. such and such, I am inhabitant of such and such place -- everything forgotten. And again when we are awakened, we forget about the dream. This is our daily experience. But in my awakening stage or dreaming stage, I am seeing both the activities. In the dream, I am the seer, and so-called awake, I am the seer. So I, the spirit soul, experiencing, I remain the same, but circumstances change. Similarly, in our previous birth, what I was, what you were, we cannot remember. Similarly, you do not know what you are going to become next. But it is a fact that I am, as spirit soul, I am eternal, present. I was present in the past, I am present in the present time, and I'll continue to be present in future.

That is explained in Bhagavad-gita, that "Arjuna, yourself, Myself, and all these persons who have assembled in this battlefield, all of us, we were existing before, we are existing now, and we shall continue to exist." Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. This is the first, preliminary knowledge of understanding spiritual life, that "I am eternal." Na jayate na mriyate va kadacin. As spirit soul, I do not take birth, neither I die. Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. I am not finished with the destruction of this material body. That is going on already. My childhood body is destroyed now. You cannot find out where is that body. My youthhood body, that is destroyed. We cannot find out anymore. So in this way, this body will be also destroyed, and we shall get another body. Tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati [Bg. 2.13]. In this way, we are changing body, one after another. So why there are different types of body? That means the living entity, spirit soul, he is contacting different types of material modes of nature. And according to that, we are developing a gross body. The transmigration of the soul means the gross body is lost. Because anything material, it will be finished. That is the nature of material, anything material. It will be finished. But the spirit soul is not finished.

So we have got this body according to our past work. Karmana daiva-netrena jantra jantor deha upapatti [SB 3.31.1]. How one gets a particular type of body? Because according to his past karma. Nature will automatically act. Just like if you contact some contaminous disease, nature will act. You will have to undergo the process of disease or develop that disease. So nature's law is working so nicely. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27]. Everything is being done by the laws of nature. So, human body, when we are civilized, we should know that "Why I am suffering?" Although under the spell of maya we take suffering as enjoyment. That is called maya. Maya means what is not. We are thinking we are enjoying, but actually we are suffering. In this material body we have to suffer. Matra-sparsas tu kaunteya sitosna-sukha-duhkha-dah [Bg. 2.14]. This example is given by Krsna in the Bhagavad-gita, that suffering means on account of this body. There is pinching cold, scorching heat. We feel these things on account of this body. At a certain circumstances, we feel pain; at a certain circumstance we feel happy. But actually, this so-called happiness and distress is due to the body.

matra-sparsas tu kaunteya
sitosna-sukha-duhkha-dah
agamapayino 'nityas
tams titiksasva bharata
 [Bg. 2.14]

Krsna has advised that this material happiness and distress, they are on account of this body. They come and go. They do not stay. So long we are in this material world, this happiness and distress will come and go. Just like seasonal changes: it does not stay. It comes and again goes away. So we should not be disturbed. (aside:) If you want to stand, you can stand. It comes and goes. We should not be disturbed. Our real business is to realize ourself, self-realization, That must go on. It must not stop. That is human life. Suffering and so-called suffering, distress, that will go on so long we have got this body. But we must come to the knowledge that "I am, I have got this body due to my past activities." That is knowledge. Karmana daiva-netrena [SB 3.31.1].

So a sensible man should consider: "Is it not possible to stop this material body? Because I am spirit soul, it is simply covering." Here, that is human life: how to stop this contamination of this material body. So, so long we shall work irresponsibly,

nunam pramattah kurute vikarma
yad indriya-pritaya aprnoti
na sadhu manye yata atmano 'yam
asann api klesada asa dehah
 [SB 5.5.4]

We do not understand that this deha, this body, is always klesada. Klesada means giving pains. For the time being, we may feel some pleasure, but actually it is a reservoir of pain, not pleasure. The example is given in this connection... Formerly, this was done by the government servants to criminal, to man in the middle of the river and drown him, and catching his hair, and when he's almost suffocating, then they again draw from the water and he takes little rest and again put him into the water. So that was the system of punishment. Similarly, whatever little pleasure we are feeling, that is exactly similarly the man, when he's taken from the water, that's all. Again he's to be drowned. This material world is like that.

Therefore Sanatana Gosvami, he was minister of the then Muhammadan government. So he presented himself to Caitanya Mahaprabhu that: ke ami, kene amaya jare tapa-traya. This is the intelligence, that "I am undergoing constantly some sort of distresses due to this body, due to this mind, due to distresses inflicted by other living entities, and due to natural disturbances. A combination of distresses. But I don't want all these distresses." Everyone is aware. He doesn't want distresses, but it is enforced. This should be the question, to... When one accepts the spiritual master... Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Sanatana Gosvami, he is by his practical example, he said that one should go and inquire from the spiritual master that "Why I am in this condition of life, always suffering?" Tri-tapa yatana. But we have become so dull, like the animals. The animals, they cannot question. They are suffering. Everyone knows animal life is full of suffering, but they cannot realize. But a human being can realize. And when the question comes, when he becomes intelligent enough that "Why I am suffering?" then his human life begins. Otherwise, he is animal. The animal cannot inquire. An animal is being taken to the slaughterhouse, but he cannot question or inquire that "Why I am taken by force in this slaughterhouse?" That is animal. But if you take one human being to be killed, if he understands, he'll make a great noise, that "This man is going, taking me. Why I am being...," so on, so on. Yes. That is human life. That is the distinction between human life and animal life, that one can understand that "Why I am put into this condition of suffering?" This is called brahma-jijnasa. That is the beginning of Vedanta philosophy. athato brahma jijnasa. Then we understand, one after another.

So we should take advantage. Not that we shall live like animal, without any inquiry, without finding out the remedy, how to stop this miserable condition of life. We are actually trying. Everyone is working so hard, struggle for existence. He is trying. Why one is trying to get money? Because he thinks that "If I get money, then the distressed condition in which I am suffering, it can be mitigated." So the struggle for existence is going on. Everyone is trying to become happy. But that is not in the material way. Material way, we are trying to get happiness, that means sense gratification. That is not happiness. Happiness means spiritual happiness. That is happiness. This material happiness is temporary. That is not happiness, but perverted happiness. It is exemplified just like we are trying to find out water in the desert. Actually in the desert there is no water, but an animal, he sees that there is water in the desert, as we also see. But we are human being. We know in the desert there is no water, it is a reflection of the sunshine. But animal does not know. He's thirsty, he looks after the water in the desert. So this is the distinction between animal and human life.

So by understanding knowledge, real life from sadhu-sastra-guru-vakya, by approaching saintly persons, sadhu... Sastra means authorized scriptures. Sadhu, sastra and guru, and spiritual master. This is the source of knowledge. And the Vedic injunction is tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet [MU 1.2.12]. In order to learn that higher transcendental platform of knowledge, one should approach a guru, bona fide guru, who knows.

tad viddhi pranipatena
pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jnanam
jnaninas tattva-darsinah
 [Bg. 4.34]

This is the process. So,
yathajnas tamasa yukta
upaste vyaktam eva hi
 na veda purvam aparam
nasta-janma-smrtis tatha

Nasta-janma-smrtis. We are changing the circumstances, nasta-janma-smrtis. As soon as one form of body is finished... Death means forgetfulness. Death means forgetfulness. Everyone is continuing life, but when one forgets the activities of this life and accepts another body, that is called death. Otherwise, a spirit soul has no death. So therefore we should be careful that I have already got this body which is meant for suffering. More or less, it doesn't matter. There is suffering. A cat or dog is suffering more than a human being, but it does not mean that the human being is without suffering. That is not possible. Everyone is suffering. So in the human form of life we can inquire, "Why I am suffering." That is human being. So sastra says that you are already suffering, in any form of body. Either you are President Nixon or a man in the street, you are already suffering. That's a fact. Now you are suffering on account of this body. Nunam pramattah kurute vikarma [SB 5.5.4]. And still you are doing something which will cause to accept another material body. Nunam pramattah kurute vikarma. And you are suffering because you indulged in your past life sense gratification, and you have got this body according to karma, and again, if you are engaged in sense gratification, do not try to elevate yourself from this platform of sense gratification, then you'll again suffer. You'll get, by nature's way, you'll get another body according to the desire. According to the mentality you create at the time of death, nature will supply you another body. And as soon as you get another body, your suffering begins. Your suffering immediately begins, even from the womb of the mother. As soon as the body is developed, the suffering is there. To remain in that compact bag and for so many months, hands and legs all tied up, cannot move. And nowadays there is risk of being killed also. There is so much suffering from the beginning of my body in the mother's womb. And then I come out, again suffering, again suffering.

So one should have the sense that so long we shall go on accepting this material body, the sufferings will go on. We simply forget. So this awakening of consciousness is possible simply by chanting this Hare Krsna maha-mantra. It is so simple thing. Ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. If you chant Hare Krsna maha-mantra, then you'll understand. Ceto-darpana. Suffering means there are so many dirty things within our heart. That is the cause of suffering. Just like a criminal: he has got the dirty things within the mind, that "If I get such and such things, I'll be happy." And he takes the risk of criminality at the risk of life. A burglar, a thief goes, he knows that "If I am captured, I'll be killed, I'll be punished, I'll be handed over to the police," and so on, so on, and still he goes and steals. Why? That is sastra, nunam pramattah: he has become mad after sense gratification. Nunam pramattah. Pramattah means mad. Why he's taking so much risk? Nunam pramattah kurute vikarma yad indriya-pritaya [SB 5.5.4], simply for sense gratification. That's all. Simply for sense gratification.

So Rsabhadeva said, "For only sense gratification, why you are accepting so much suffering life after life? Now you have got this human form of life, you just try to rectify, that no more material body. This is human life." Tapo divyam putraka yena suddhyed sattvam [SB 5.5.1]. "You purify your existence, tapa, by tapasya, by austerity, penances." Therefore in the human life you'll find so many tapasvis undergoing tapasya. Voluntarily not accepting the so-called material pleasures, that is called tapasya. Tapo divyam. So tapo means undergo some austerities, penances, for divyam. For awakening your spiritual existence. Then your struggle for existence will stop. Tapo divyam putraka yena suddhyed sattvam [SB 5.5.1]. Just like one man is infected with some disease. That is asuddha, impure condition. So we try to make it purified by injection, by medicine. And similarly, we are getting repeatedly different types of body. Now we should purify this bodily existence. And that purification in this age, it is very, very simple: chant Hare Krsna. That's all. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's contribution. Ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. If you chant this Hare Krsna mantra, param vijayate sri-krsna-sankirtanam. So very simple thing. There is no question of cast, creed, nationality, color, richness. No. Everyone has got the tongue by the grace of God. Everyone can chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. So just continue and be happy.

Thank you very much. (end)

Take a test

Prabhupada: Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. (chants twice with devotees responding) (chants verse word for word with devotees responding:)

na ced ihaivapacitim yathamhasah
krtasya kuryan mana-ukta-panibhih
dhruvam sa vai pretya narakan upaiti
ye kirtita me bhavatas tigma-yatanah
 [SB 6.1.7]

So last week we discussed Pariksit Maharaja's sympathy with the suffering humanity. This is Vaisnava. The Vaisnava, or devotee, he is the perfect sympathizer for all suffering humanity. Others' sympathy is not perfect. They are planning so many things -- opening hospitals or charitable dispensaries, schools, lunatic asylum. These are all public sympathetic activities. But they are not... They are, of course, good to some extent. If a man is suffering from the bodily ailments, if he is given some relief in the hospital, or if the society is not educated, give him education, this is all good work undoubtedly. But the ultimate good work is not known to them. They are taking care of the external symptoms. Why a person, a living entity, is put into that condition? And if that condition is ended, that is real sympathy. A person is suffering from some disease. He goes to the doctor, physician. He gives some medicine -- immediate some relief from the pain. This is one sympathy. And there is another sympathy, that "Why the man is getting such disease and suffering? Why not stop the cause of the disease?" That is real sympathy.

Now, we can see in our front, there is a tree standing for many years, and he has to stand in scorching heat, torrents of rain, pinching cold. He cannot move an inch. And if we think seriously, "Suppose if I would have been put into that condition, that 'Stand up here for five hundred or five thousand years. You cannot move an inch, and you bear all the sufferings, scorching heat, storm,' " would I agree to do that? No. I will not agree. But the tree is also a living entity. He is a living being. I am also living being. So I am put in a different condition of life and the tree is put in a different condition of life. Why? Why this distinction? Is there any upper hand superior judgment that one is put in the condition of standing tree and one is put in the beautiful human body, freely moving? There must be, because we are all living entities. We are all soul, spirit soul. We are simply put in different dresses.

Therefore, in the beginning of the instruction of Bhagavad-gita, this lesson is the first lesson. We have to understand.

dehino 'smin yatha dehe
kaumaram yauvanam jara
 tatha dehantara-praptir
dhiras tatra na muhyati
 [Bg. 2.13]

Ninety-nine point nine percent, they do not understand this philosophy, especially in the modern age. Mandah sumanda-matayo [SB 1.1.10]. They are very, very dull rascals. This is the challenge. Mandah. Mandah means dull, no intelligence. A simple truth, Krsna is explaining to Arjuna. It is authoritative statement because Krsna says, and Krsna says not unreasonably, very reasonably, "I am giving very common example that smin dehe, within this body, the proprietor of the body or the spirit soul is there. And on account of this," dehino 'smin yatha dehe [Bg. 2.13], "because the living entity is within this body, therefore the bodily changes are taking place." What is that changing? Dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara. "The body is sometimes child, and sometimes boy, sometimes young man, sometimes old man. So the body is changing." Who cannot understand this? The child, the small child, is dancing. Now, that child will get the body of a young man like you. Everyone knows it. This body will change. Where is the difficulty? And Krsna is giving this common example, tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. As you are experiencing this change of body, similarly, you take it that this body also will change. An old man like me, the next body is there. Either farther old man or, after death, another body. This is to be understood. Tatha dehantara-praptih. Dehantara-praptih means to get another body.

So we are experiencing in our this life. It is taking change so swiftly that we cannot understand how the body is changing, but it is changing. So similarly, this body will change. Tatha dehantara-praptih. And we have to change that body after death according to my mental condition because we have got two bodies, the subtle body and the gross body. This gross body is finished; it is no more working. Just like at night the gross body does not work. We are thinking, "I am sleeping." Sleeping means the body is so much tired, it is no more working. But your another body, which is made of mind, intelligence, and ego -- subtle body -- that is working. Everyone has got this experience. The subtle body takes you to another place or another condition. You are dreaming that you have gone to the jungle. You are meeting some animals. The tiger is there coming to attack you, and you are crying, "Here is tiger! Tiger! Tiger!" And the man who is not dreaming, he says, "Where is tiger? Why you are crying?" But he's actually... The result is there. Don't think that the result is not there. In dream you are thinking your lover is there, you are embracing, and you get discharge, not that that you are not working and it is not, there is no result. There is result. I cannot see what is the result, what you are dreaming. I am fool. I do not know. But the man who is dreaming, he is experiencing. Similarly, change of body means we are carried by the subtle body to another gross body. This is the process, nature's way. You cannot say that "I will not change body." No, you will be forced. Just like a young man can say, "I will not become old man." No, nature will force you to become an old man, or change your body. This is the law of nature. You cannot surpass the laws of nature. Similarly, change of body, that is forced by the nature. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27]. Prakrteh, by the nature's law, we have to do. We are completely under nature's law. And we are declaring independence. This is our foolishness. This is our foolishness.

So in the Fifth Chapter, at the end of the Fifth Chapter, Sukadeva Gosvami has described the different sufferings, body in the hellish condition. We are, according to change of body, we are not only going through the evolutionary process of different types of body, as we have got experience here: the aquatics, the trees, the plants, the insect, the birds, the beast, then a human being. Similarly, after human being, if we do not work properly with our advanced consciousness, then we go down again in the hellish planet that are down this universe. And if we act piously, then you go to the upper planetary system. This moon planet is also one of the upper planetary system. But you cannot go by sputnik. That is not possible. It is all foolishness. The moon planet is situated above the sun planet. They are not going to the moon planet; therefore they have stopped their propaganda. So above that moon planet, there is Venus, there is Jupiter, there is Mars, and so many others. So in the sastra it is said, urdhvam gacchanti sattva-sthah [Bg. 14.18]. If you act very piously, in the mode of goodness, then you are promoted to the higher planetary system. And if you do not work in the modes of goodness -- in the modes of passion -- then you remain in this planet and become changed into so many bodies. And if you still work... Jaghanya-guna-vrtti-stha adho gacchanti tamasah. If you are so abominable that you do not work as a human being and just like animal, then you go to the hellish condition. This is nature's law.

So Sukadeva Gosvami has described all the planetary system, where and how they are situated, how many miles they are different from one another. The calculation of the whole universe is made there. The diameter is described: four billion miles up and down, this way and that. And where is the sun is situated and how far above the sun the moon is situated, how far above the moon the Mars, Jupiter -- everything is clearly described. And where the hellish planets are situated, and how in the hellish planets different sinful men are suffering. So Pariksit Maharaja, after hearing... That is Vaisnava. He did not take care of the other things. He immediately took care of the suffering planets, because that is the Vaisnava's nature. Vaisnava has no problem. He is servant of God, representative of God. But he is feeling the sufferings of the humanity. That is Vaisnava. He feels, "Oh, these people are suffering. Let us give some information from the sastra so that they can be relieved from the suffering condition."

So in this Kali-yuga, (it is) especially Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy that you are chanting and dancing before Caitanya Mahaprabhu... So He is so merciful that if you continue this process, you are guaranteed that you will never go to the hellish planet. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy. Very simple thing. If you simply chant and dance before Caitanya Mahaprabhu Kalau sankirtanaih yajnaih yajanti hi su-medhasah. This is the description of the sastra:

krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam
sangopangastra-parsadam
yajnaih sankirtana-prayair
yajanti hi su-medhasah
 [SB 11.5.32]

This is the method of worship in this Kali-yuga, in this age. What is that? That krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam: "The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, descends as Caitanya Mahaprabhu, whose complexion is very beautiful." Tvisa. Tvisa means by the complexion; akrsna, not blackish. As Krsna is blackish, this incarnation is not blackish. It is just like golden, molten gold. So tvisakrsnam. And krsna-varnam, "He is Krsna," or "always chanting Hare Krsna." Krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam. And His associates, just like Nityananda Prabhu and Advaita Prabhu and Gadadhara and Srivasa and many others... So He is always in association of His assistants, who are assisting Him in propagating the sankirtana movement. Gaurangera sangi-gane, nitya-siddha bhoi mane. Anyone who is preaching the sankirtana movement is associate of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Sangopangastra... Just like Advaita Prabhu, Nityananda Prabhu helped, similarly, anyone, even up to date, who is trying to help the propagation of Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission, preach this sankirtana movement all over the world, he is also associate of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Gaurangera sangi-gane nitya siddha boli mane. They are not ordinary human being. Nitya siddha, ever liberated.

So if we follow this leadership and if we act very nicely, very easily... Sukham. There is one verse in Sanskrit, Bhagavad-gita, raja-guhyam pavitram idam uttamam, kartum avyayam. To perform this activity, it doesn't require much energy, much austerity. Simply you join the sankirtana movement, and ecstasy you dance, take prasadam. By this process you are guaranteed; you will never go to the hellish planet. So this sankirtana movement is so nice. Anyway, don't disbelieve. It is in the sastra. So there are hellish planet, hellish birth, 8,400,000 species of birth. So we have to take information from the sastra. Don't be foolish. You create your mental concoction. No, that will not help you, because you are not free. Nobody is free. Everyone is under the grip of material laws. Even if I think, "I am free," that is my foolishness. I will be forced to act. Even if I do not want to become old man, I will be forced to become old man. And if I, after this giving up this body, if I... Suppose nature is offering me a dog's body. If I say "No, no, I will not accept this," no, you will be forced to accept it. That is nature's law. But you can save yourself if you follow conscientiously. That is Krsna consciousness. If you keep yourself in Krsna consciousness and act accordingly, then you will be saved. Otherwise there is no saving. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. You will have to accept another body. And what is that body? That is not stated. That will be decided at the end of your life, at the time of your death, at the condition of your mind and intelligence at that time. If, at that time, you are thinking of your pet dog, "What will happen to my pet dog? How he will live? Let me leave some of my property in his name," (laughter) then you can leave the dog with some property, but you are going to be dog. This is laws of nature. You may love your dog very nicely and leave some property, but where you are going, sir? That is under the nature's law. You cannot say that "I given so much property to the dog. Why shall I accept the...?" No. Because your mind is absorbed in the thought of dog, therefore you must take the dog's body. This is nature's law. Therefore we have to train up our mind. Instead of dog, you must train up your mind to think of God. Then you will be saved. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam [Bg. 4.9].

Anyway, so Pariksit Maharaja asked that "How these people can be delivered from this hellish condition of life?" That was his question to Sukadeva Gosvami. He asked,

adhuneha maha-bhaga
yathaiva narakan narah
nanogra-yatanan neyat
tan me vyakhyatum arhasi

"I have heard you, my dear sir." Sukadeva Gosvami is the guru of Pariksit Maharaja. So he became very much anxious, "Oh, so many people are suffering in the hellish condition?" So he immediately asked his spiritual master, "Kindly let me know how these living entities who are suffering in this way can be saved, can be delivered from the severe pain of hellish condition of life." This was his question. So the answer is given that,

na ced ihaivapacitim yathamhasah
krtasya kuryan mana-ukta-panibhih
dhruvam sa vai pretya narakan upaiti
ye kirtita me bhavatas tigma-yatanah

"My dear Pariksit, if, before the end of the life..." We are committing so many sinful activities. We are committing so many sinful activities. Just like in the Western countries they are killing so many birds and beasts, especially cows, thousands and thousands. They are all becoming implicated. You have no right. Even Christ said, "Thou shalt not kill." (aside, to someone fiddling with tape recorder:) What is that business? Stop it. Who is making this "kut, kut"?

Devotee: This tape recorder.

Prabhupada: No, why this is...? Stop it. So we are responsible. Even if we kill one mosquito, we are responsible. It is not man-made law, that "If you kill a human being, then you are punished, and if you kill another animal, you are not punished." This is man-made law, according to our convenience. "We have to eat the animal; therefore there is no punishment for animal killing." But God is for everyone the same. Every living entity is part and parcel of God. So they have been given an opportunity to undergo the punishment or enjoyment. You cannot disturb him. You cannot disturb him. Just like you are living in an apartment according to your position, but if I forcibly I ask you, "Go out of this apartment," then I will be punishable by the law. I have no right to get you out from that apartment. Similarly, every living entity by the laws of nature, all laws of nature, is imprisoned or allowed under certain apartment, either in the body of a tree or a human being or demigod or cat or dog. These are all ordained. So you cannot get out the living entity, soul, by force from that body. Then you will be punishable. The living entity is never killed, but you have no right to get him out from that body. That is sinful. If you argue that "What is the harm if I kill one animal, because it is said, na hanyate hanyamane sarire: [Bg. 2.20] 'The living entity, soul, is never killed even after the annihilation of this body'?" that is all right. But you cannot force him. Just like if you get one person, by force, get out from his apartment -- he is not dying, of course, but still, it is criminal because you are forcing to go out of the apartment. So that is the law of nature. You cannot force anyone to get out of the body. Then you are punishable.

So the punishments are different. So therefore Sukadeva Gosvami is informing, na ced ihaivapacitim yathamhasah. You have done something, sinful activity, and if you do not atone for it before your next death, krtasya kuryan mana-ukta-panibhih, the sinful activities which you have done with your body, with your mind, with your senses, that you have to atone for it. "Otherwise," dhruvam sa vai pretya narakan upaiti, dhruvam, "surely he will get the different types of hellish condition of life," ye kirtita me, "as I have already described," bhavatas tigma-yatanah, "before you how they are suffering." This is karma-kanda vicara, means for one sinful activities, another pious activity, counteraction. But this will be discussed in the next verse, that prayascittam. Prayascitta means atonement. That is the next verse here:

tasmat puraivasv iha papa-niskrtau
yateta mrtyor avipadyatatmana
dosasya drstva guru-laghavam yatha
bhisak cikitseta rujam nidanavit
 [SB 6.1.8]

So according to degree of sinful activities... So degree, the most sinful activity, according to Vedic information -- to kill a child, to kill a woman, to kill a brahmana, and to kill a cow. This is very abominable punishment. Child, brahmana, cow, and woman, they are to be given protection by the laws of Vedic instruction. They have to be protected. So this should be very carefully done. Stri-sudra-dvija-bandhunam [SB 1.4.25]. Stri, they are considered either as innocent as the child or as innocent as the animal. So they should be given always protection. So here it is said that tasmat puraiva asu iha papa-niskrtau. Very busy. We do not know when is, when we shall die. But we must know, we have committed so many sinful activities; therefore before the next death, yateta mrtyor avipadyatatmana. Mrtyu: we have to die. Before death, we have to make the atonement. "Otherwise," Sukadeva Gosvami says, "as I have already described the different position of hellish condition of life, one has to suffer." And how it will be done? Dosasya drstva laghu..., guru-laghavam yatha. There are degrees. The first degree sinful activity I have already said. There are different degrees. So as the physician The example is given that bhisak cikitseta rujam nidanavit. Bhisak means physician. You have got some pain, disease, ailments. He gives you Suppose you are suffering, so he sees that this suffering is not very serious. "All right, you take this tablet." What is called? Anacin? "And you will be relived." But if he has got a big boil, and it has got pus and bad [break]

...decided in India still there is the system. Now everything is gone practically. But still the Vedic system is there that if one has committed... They are always conscious, the mass of people, not the so-called educated men, that "In the sastra it is said that this is sinful." So if he commits some sinful activity, he goes to a very expert brahmana. They are called bhattacarya. They are especial... Just like there are physicians for treatment of the disease, there are highly learned brahmanas who are called bhattacaryas. People go there: "Sir, I have committed this sin. What I have to do?" So they prescribe that "You do like this." So similarly, as we go to the physician, we have to go to consult an expert learned brahmana, that "I have committed..." But people used to understand that what is sinful and what is pious. Now people are so downtrodden, so dull, mandah, that they do not understand what is sinful, what is pious. They are going on, doing all nonsense without any care. And there is no question of consulting physician or learned brahmana.

So these things are all gone. In Caitanya Mahaprabhu's time there was misuse also of this... Just like sometimes the physician does not give him the proper medicine. Just to keep him under treatment and take money from him, he continues. Similarly, in this age things are being deteriorated. So even you go to a learned brahmana, he does not give you the proper instruction. He wants to exact some money from you. Therefore things have gone, everything, very bad. Even in Caitanya Mahaprabhu's time, when Caitanya Mahaprabhu was there, one gentleman, he was made into a Muhammadan. This is a long story. The shortcut is he was very rich man, and the Nawab of Bengal, Hussain Shah, when he was a boy, he was his servant. Later on he became the Nawab, the king. So one day the Nawab was being massaged, and his wife saw that there is a stripe on the back. So (s)he asked the Nawab, "What is this?" So he stated that "When I was a poor boy, I was servant of Buddhimanta Khan, and I committed some wrong, so he whipped me with a cane." "Oh? Then it is a sign that you were a servant of Buddhimanta Khan sometimes before. If people will see and you will explain, that is an insult for you." "Oh, what is that? He was just like my father. He chastised me. I don't mind." "No, no, no, no. You should kill him so that he may not say to anyone that you were sometime his servant." So Nawab disagreed. Nawab said, "No, no. He treated me just like my son, and I accepted him as my father. It is not possible to kill him." Then the queen suggested that "At least you make him a Muhammadan. Then that will be the punishment." So the king, or the Nawab, said, "All right, I shall make him." Because in those days, to make a Hindu a Muhammadan, it was very easy. The Muhammadans they have got a pot, it is called badna. So if the Mohammedan takes little water from the badna and sprinkles upon a Hindu, then Hindu community will immediately reject him, "Oh, he has become Muhammadan." This was the Hindu community. Therefore so many Muhammadans were there in India, and ultimately, by the British policy, they divided. They were not actually Muhammadans coming from Turkey or from West. They were lower-class Hindus. But the Hindus were so foolish that if a Muhammadan sprinkled some water in this way, so he becomes Muhammadan and he is rejected, in this way the Muhammadan population was there.

Anyway, that was done in the case of Buddhimanta Khan. The Nawab called him one day and took little water from his pot and sprinkled, and it was the law, "He has become Muhammadan, he has become Muhammadan." So he went to a bhattacarya, "So what is the atonement? Now I have become Muhammadan." Just see the conception. And the bhattacarya said that "You drink one pound of molten lead." "How it is possible?" "That is the atonement." So in this way he was baffled. He went to Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He was very respectable man. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu laughed, that "This the condition of the Hindu society." So He said that "I tell you that you give up your family life. You go to Vrndavana and chant there Hare Krsna. That's all. That will be the..."

So at the present moment that is the only atonement. Whatever we have done and whatever we are doing, the atonement is chant Hare Krsna mantra. So we haven't got to go to Vrndavana. We have got Vrndavana, Nabadwip, here in Hawaii, in this temple. So you take this process of atonement, but don't commit sinful life any more. Don't think that "Now I am chanting and I can go on committing all sinful activities." That is aparadha. That is offense. Namnad balad yasya hi papa-buddhih. If we think like that, that "We have got an instrument, chanting of Hare Krsna mantra, which nullifies or neutralizes all kinds of sinful activities. It is very good instrument. Then I go on committing all kinds of sinful activities, and sometimes I go in the temple and chant Hare Krsna and dance," no, don't take this policy. You must stop your sinful activities. Hare Krsna mantra has got the power to neutralize the resultant action of your all sinful activities. That's a fact. But don't accumulate again the sinful activities. Then you are safe. If you take it as an instrument: "Now let me commit sinful activities and chant Hare Krsna," then that is very dangerous. You will never be excused. Just like sometimes the Christians do. They go to the church, make some atonement, and again does the same thing next week, and again goes to the church, again atonement. This is not good. If you make atonement for your sinful activities by some process -- just like we are prescribing this process, chant Hare Krsna -- surely your sinful reaction is nullified. But don't commit it again. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He delivered Jagai-Madhai. They were very sinful. Sinful means they were born in a respectable brahmana family, but by bad association they became drunkard, woman-hunter, cheater, and plunderer, like that. That is sinful. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu delivered them. Then how delivered them? Caitanya Mahaprabhu made them promise that "You will not do any more all these things." They said, "Yes, we promise. We shall not do." "Then you are delivered." Similarly, by chanting Hare Krsna mantra, all the sinful activities are excused, but you don't commit it again. Therefore we are prescribing... Along with chanting of Hare Krsna mantra, we are asking our disciples, "No illicit sex, no meat-eating, no intoxication, no gambling." If you save yourself from these four pillars of sinful activities and chant Hare Krsna mantra -- not very much, only sixteen rounds minimum -- then you are saved from the hellish condition of life for which Pariksit Maharaja was so disturbed and he was asking, "How to save these people from this hellish condition of life?"

So this will be described more and more. The book is there, Bhagavata. You can read. We are... We have published so many Srimad-Bhagavatam edition, nicely explained in English. So they are being accepted even educated circle, school, college, and big, big professors. So you also try to read this Bhagavatam, and don't commit sinful activities, the four things, and chant Hare Krsna. Then your life is saved from hellish condition of life.

Thank you very much. (end)

"Ruling By Religious Principles"

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.9.49
Mayapura, June 15, 1973

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Pradyumna: (leads chanting, etc.)

pitra canumato raja
vasudevanumoditah
cakara rajyam dharmena
pitr-paitamaham vibhuh

Translation: "After this, the great religious king, Maharaja Yudhisthira, executed the royal power in the kingdom strictly according to the codes and royal principles approved by his uncle and confirmed by Lord Sri Krsna."

Prabhupada: This is very important verse: the king's duty and how a king is recognized. The first recognition was made by Dhrtarastra, his uncle. Why? Because there was fight between two section of cousin-brothers, the Pandavas and the Kauravas. So the Kauravas were all killed. The Pandavas also, except the five brothers, their sons were all killed. So it is not that by force... There was force, but it was dharma-yuddha. Ksatriyas, they would claim by strength, by fight, not by high court judgment. By strength, by bodily strength.

So the Pandavas proved their bodily strength, and Dhrtarastra was under the impression that because actually the kingdom belonged to him, but on account of his becoming blind, he could not inherit on the throne. Defective in the body. A king should be all complete. So not a blind man can be king. That is not possible. So after the death of his younger brother Pandu, he thought, actually the kingdom belonged to him. Now, after the death of his brother, his sons should inherit. That was the political conspiracy of the battle of Kuruksetra. Now everything finished, decided by the battle. Dhrtarastra accepted, "Yes, my dear nephews, you can become king now. We have tried our strength, and you have come out victorious. Therefore I also confirm that you become king." It is said, pitra canumatah. Not that against the will of Dhrtarastra, Maharaja Yudhisthira accepted the throne. No. He took permission: "My dear uncle, now you decide whether we shall become king or you shall remain king." So he said, "No, you become king. Now your right is confirmed."

Then again, it was confirmed by Krsna, Vasudeva. Because a king is representative of God. King is not ordinary person. Just like spiritual master is representative of God, similarly, king is also representative of God. The father is also representative of God. These are the statements of the sastras. Because they will guide. The king will guide. The spiritual master will guide. The father will guide. What is that guidance? That guidance is how one can become Krsna conscious by education, by culture. This is guidance, not that to guide them how to become hippies. This is not guidance. This is misguidance. Guidance means... The whole system of human civilization is guide the people to become God conscious. This is the Vedic civilization, not to make them dog conscious, cat conscious, animal conscious. No. (aside:) Sleeping. You are feeling sleepy? Why not sleep? But don't make like that.

So people... Animals, they do not know that the goal of life is to understand God, Visnu. Animals cannot know, cannot... Even they are instructed, they cannot know it. That is not possible. But the human beings, however fallen he may be, if he is properly guided, if he is properly instructed, he can become God conscious. This is the special privilege of the human life. Animal cannot do. You can train one animal how to dance. That also you can do. So many things. Just like in circus, the animals are trained up to do so many things. But an animal cannot be trained to be God conscious. Sometimes also, by proper guidance, the animal also becomes, but that is very rare case. So it is the king's duty to see that his citizens are becoming God conscious. That is king's duty. First of all father's duty, spiritual master's duty, ultimately, king's duty. King's, king's duty.

Therefore it is said, dharmena, cakara rajyam dharmena. Dharmena means "by religious principles." What is that religious principle? Religious principle means to guide everyone to become God conscious. This is religious principle. Dharmena. Therefore varnasrama-dharma. In the Vedic culture the varnas and asrama, they are accepted as dharma. Dharma means duty which you must execute. That is called dharma. Compulsory. If you don't do it, then you will suffer. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. And wherefrom this dharma comes? It comes from Bhagavan, God. He gives these dharmas. And the king, the spiritual master, being representative of God, it is their duty how to guide people to develop that God consciousness. This is called human civilization, dharmena. So it is the king's duty to observe his dharma, ksatriya. Ksatriya's duty is to give protection to the citizens, security of life and property, and guide them gradually to develop Krsna consciousness. This is ksatriya's duty. Brahmana's duty is to guide the ksatriyas, whether he is actually executing his duty according to sastra. That is brahmana's duty. Brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra. Similarly, vaisya's duty is to see economic development of the state, and the sudra's duty -- because sudra means fourth-class men; they have no intelligence -- therefore their duty is to serve the three higher classes, brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya. This is the system. Catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah [Bg. 4.13]. According to quality and work -- brahmana's quality and brahmana's work; ksatriya's quality and ksatriya's work; vaisya's quality and vaisya's work.

Quality means education, culture. Just like a medical practitioner. When he passes his examination in the medical college, that is his quality. Or a lawyer. When he passes his examination in the university, that is his quality. But simply by passing the examination, if he sits down at home, then he cannot be called a medical practitioner. He must work as a medical man. Not only... (aside:) You sit down properly, not like that. Not simply acquiring the quality, but he must work as a brahmana. Then he will be accepted as a brahmana. Now everything is thrown away. If somebody happens to take birth in a brahmana family, he becomes a brahmana. All others, sudra. And he may do all nonsense, and still he is brahmana. That is not... It is the duty of the state to see whether you are qualified as a brahmana. "You are claiming as brahmana. Whether you are actually qualified as a brahmana? Whether you are working as a brahmana?" It is the state's duty to see. It is the king's duty. He may not misguide others.

Just like nowadays a so-called brahmana is working as a cobbler, and he is claiming to become brahmana. Not like that. It is the... Just like a medical man. A medical man, if he wants to practice, then he must get certificate from the medical board, registration. The medical board will see whether he is qualified as a medical man, whether he has passed medical examination. Then he will be allowed to practice as a medical man. So whenever a medical practitioner gives you a prescription along with his name, he gives his title, M.D., B.S. and registered number. That means he is approved. Then he can practice. This is common sense affairs in the every state, a lawyer is given certificate by the government. Then he is allowed. Similarly, it is the duty of the state or of the monarch to see that one who is claiming as a brahmana, whether he is qualified, whether he is acting as a brahmana. Similarly, a man claiming ksatriya, whether he is qualified as a ksatriya and he is acting as a ksatriya. Similarly, the vaisya. And sudra is general. Sudra means one who has no education, no culture. That is called sudra. So that is the remnants. First of all, brahmana, ksatriya, vaisyas, and others, those who have no sufficient brain, they are counted as sudra. Still, sudras have also prescribed duties. If there are others, those who are less than sudras, or even the sudra qualities are wanting, they are doing anything and everything without any control, they are called mleccha-yavana. Mleccha-yavana. This is the pancama, fifth-grade. First grade, brahmana; second grade, ksatriya; third grade, vaisyas; fourth grade, sudras; and all others, rejected, fifth grade, they are called candalas, candala.

But this Krsna consciousness movement is so nice that even candalas can be also raised to the platform of brahmana. Candalo 'pi dvija-srestho hari-bhakti-parayanah. Even if a candala is trained up as a devotee, he can be better than a qualified brahmana. These are the shastric injunctions. Kirata-hunandhra-pulinda-pulkasa abhira-sumbha yavanah khasadayah. The yavanas' names are there also. Yavana-mleccha means generally they are meat-eaters, especially cow meat, cow flesh eaters. They are called yavana-mlecchas. So the higher caste, they cannot become meat-eaters. Meat-eating is there. That is for the lower class, not for the higher class. If anyone gives up meat-eating or the bad habits of lower class, illicit sex, meat-eating, intoxication, gambling, and if he's trained how to become a qualified brahmana, then he can be accepted. That is sanctioned in the Bhagavad-gita. These rascals, they say that these mlecchas and yavanas cannot become brahmana. Because we are making brahmanas from the mlecchas' and yavanas' section, they are protesting. Some of them are protesting that "Swami Bhaktivedanta is ruining Hindu religion." The rascals, they do not know that I am acting strictly according to sastra. The sastras says... Krsna says Himself, mam hi partha vyapasritya ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah: [Bg. 9.32] "Anyone born in low-grade family.' Papa-yoni, mam hi partha vyapasritya, "if he takes to Me according to regulative principles," vyapasritya, "according to the principle," te 'pi yanti param gatim, "he is immediately becomes eligible to be promoted," param gatim, "the highest perfection of life." One thing is papa-yoni. So there is no restriction that papa-yoni shall remain always papa-yoni. Why? They should be given enlightenment. That is brahmana-ism. Brahmana means liberal, and just the opposite word of brahmana is krpana, miser. A brahmana should give chance to everyone, even to the papa-yoni, how to become brahmana. That is real brahmana. And the rascal who thinks that "I shall remain simply brahmana; others shall remain mlecchas and yavanas," he is not brahmana; he is sudra, because his mind is so crippled. He does not want to see others to become brahmana. He is miser, krpana. Krpanah phala-hetavah.

So our this movement is not for the krpanas. It is meant for the brahmanas. We want to become ourself brahmana, and we want to make others also brahmana. Because there is need of brahmana at the present moment. The whole human society is now running by the sudras, all sudras. Kalau sudra-sambhavah. In this Kali-yuga, everyone is a sudra. Maybe born of a brahmana family, but because he has no culture... The first culture is garbhadhana-samskara. If garbhadhana-samskara is not observed even in a brahmana family, he becomes immediately sudra. This is the statement of the sastra. So nobody is observing garbhadhana-samskara. Therefore, according to sastra, everyone is a sudra. Now because everyone is sudra, therefore he cannot be trained up as brahmana? No. He can be trained up. Candalo 'pi dvija-srestho hari-bhakti-parayanah. If that sudra or candala can be turned into a devotee of Krsna, hari-bhakti-parayanah, then under training he can become better than brahmana.

So these are the principles of the state, to see. Therefore it is called cakara rajyam dharmena. Dharmena, to establish dharma. Cakara rajyam dharmena. How? Pitr-paitamaham. The king, Yudhisthira, Maharaja Yudhisthira, his father Pandu, his father, his father... This is the descendance. When Maharaja Pariksit was born and the name-giving ceremony was going on, and all the learned brahmanas, they predicted that this boy would be such, such-and-such powerful like such-and-such king, such-and-such munificent like such-and-such great... That description is there in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. So Maharaja Yudhisthira inquired whether this boy will be loving his praja like his forefathers. That is the first inquiry. Therefore to follow the tradition of the pitr-paitamaham, forefathers... The kings... Formerly all the kings, they were following the footsteps of their forefathers. Just like Maharaja Pariksit, grandson of Maharaja Yudhisthira, when he saw that one black man was trying to kill one cow, he immediately took his sword, and he said, "Do you think that because there is no Arjuna, no Yudhisthira, you shall do anything you like?" Forefathers, remembering forefathers. "Still I am there. I am his representative. You cannot do it." So forefathers.

So the monarchy, as soon as it becomes a personal property... The kings thought that "This kingdom is mine. I can do whatever I like, and still, the kingdom is mine." Then the monarchy was failure. Then from the whole world, the monarchy is now wiped out. But the so-called democracy is no good. Because democracy means by votes. So the votes are given by the rascal sudras. So what is the meaning of electing somebody if the vote givers are also rascal and fool, and the vote-taker is a big food, big rascal, that's all? He manages something, somehow or other to take the votes. Therefore, you see, dacoit is going on. The government is there, and at night you are not secure. You have to take care of yourself, whether dacoits are coming or not. And they are coming. So what is the meaning of this government? If the dacoits are there, rogues are there, thieves are there, miscreants are there, so what is the meaning of government? No. At the present moment the government means that the same rogues and rascals come to become minister and take fat salary and sleep, and you take care of yourself. That is going on.

So it is not that kind of kingdom. Here it is said, cakara rajyam dharmena. Cakara rajyam dharmena pitr-paitamaham vibhuh. He was so great, powerful. According to the tradition of the pitr-paitamaham, Maharaja Yudhisthira, recognized by his uncle, recognized by Krsna, took up the reigns of the government, and dharmena, according to the..., strictly to the shastric principle, he ruled over. This is king. So in the Bhagavata you will find everything, politics, sociology, religion, culture, philosophy, science, everything you will find. It is not that simply dogmatic, something saying, some miracles. No, it is not like that. It is a great science, scientific. Therefore in the beginning it is said, nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam idam [SB 1.1.3]. Nigama. Nigama means the Vedic literature. Nigama. So the essence, the quintessence of Vedic literature, Srimad-Bhagavatam... Veda means knowledge, I have several times explained. So Veda contains all kinds of knowledge. Ayur-veda, the knowledge about medical science. Dhanur-veda, the military science. Ayur-veda, Dhanur-veda, Yajur-veda. Veda means knowledge.

So it is kalpa-taru, nigama-kalpa-taru; the Vedic knowledge is just like kalpa-taru. Kalpa-taru means desire tree. Anything you want from that tree... Just like here in this material world we can get mangoes from the mango tree, pineapple from the pineapple tree. If we ask the pineapple tree, "Give me mango," that is not possible. But in the spiritual world there are trees. That is described in the Brahma-samhita. Cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vrksa-laksavrtesu surabhir abhipalayantam [Bs. 5.29]. That is kalpa-vrksa. You can get from any tree whatever you like. That is spiritual. So nigama-kalpa-taru. The kalpa-taru, the Vedas. The very word, referred, kalpa-taru, means it is not material. It is coming from the spiritual world, Veda. Vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyo vedanta-krd vedanta-vid ca aham.

So Veda is coming from the spiritual world. Therefore you cannot find any history of the beginning of Vedas, because it is beyond the story of creation. Therefore Vedic knowledge is perfect. Any knowledge within this material world, that is defective, with four kinds of defects: mistake, illusion, imperfectness and cheating. But Vedic knowledge is not like that. Vedic knowledge is perfect. Therefore, amongst the learned society, if you give evidence from the Vedas, it is accepted. Immediately accepted. Just like in the law court, if you give reference from the lawbooks section, it is accepted. Similarly, Vedic knowledge is so perfect that if you refer to some verse in the Vedas, in the Upanisads... Just like raso vai sah. "Sah, that Krsna, is reservoir of all pleasure." Raso vai sah. So yato va imani bhutani jayante. These things are... There are so many statements.

So dharmena rajyam cakara. Not whimsically, not by the high-court decision, no. No. There was no need of high-court decision if it is confirmed by the superiors. Just like Maharaja Dhrtarastra confirmed, "Yes, my dear boy, you can become king." Krsna confirmed, "You can become king." So he became king. Fighting was also there. The fighting also, they came out victorious. But still, it was confirmed by Yudhisthira and Krsna. Then he took over the charge of the government and he ruled the citizens, dharmena, as it was done by his predecessor forefathers.

Thank you very much. (end)
