Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: ...means ahankara-vimudhatma. The more we get material possession, our false egotism increases. "I have got this. I have got this. Who is more powerful than me?" Adhyo 'bhijanavan asmi ko 'nyo 'sti sadrso maya. These are described in the Sixteenth Chapter. What is the meaning of this ahankara? Because vimudhatma, that "I have got this motorcar. I have got this property," but within a second it can be finished. There is another, superior law. That he forgets. He sees actually, but he forgets. That is called vimudhatma. He is seeing, everyone. Of course, our time and nature's time, little different. So many Hitlers, so many Napoleons, so many Gandhis, so many Jawaharlal came and went. But they do not see. Pasyann api na pasyati. They are seeing actually; still they do not see. Blind. In India the Mohammedans came. They ruled over. Where is the Moghul? The Englishmen came. Where they are? Everything gone. Pasyann api na pasyati. This is called vimudhatma. That is going on. The material civilization means ahankara-vimudhatma. By false egotism they are bewildered and rascals. Bhaktivinoda Thakura has translated this, that jada-bidya jato, mayara vaibhava: "All this material advancement of civilization is the paraphernalia of maya." Because you cannot enjoy it, but you are thinking, "I possess so much. I possess so much." You'll not be allowed to enjoy, but still.... Therefore all these material possessions are the paraphernalia of maya. So what is the wrong there? Now, wrong is this, jada-bidya jato, mayara vaibhava, tomara bhajane badha. They are hindrances for advancement of Krsna consciousness. That is the aim of human life. That, you forget that. So tomara bhajane badha, anitya samsare, moha janamiya. The result is that he becomes more attached to this temporary world and remains the rascal. Because without being rascal, nobody comes in this material world to enjoy. As soon as anyone has come to this material world, he's a rascal. Krsna-bahirmukha hana bhoga vancha kare, nikata-stha maya tare japatiya dhare (Prema-vivarta).Cyavana: Srila Prabhupada? In some parts of the Bible it describes how things were being carried out, and they say that the activities were going on according to the will of God. Does that mean that there was a God conscious civilization then?
Prabhupada: Activities? These activities are going on. The sun is rising by the will of God; the moon is rising, will of God. You are being punished by the will of God. He is the Supreme.
Cyavana: But they described that people were worshiping and that children were being born...
Prabhupada: Eh?
Cyavana: Children were being born according to God's will.
Prabhupada: Yes...
Cyavana: It's described in certain parts of...
Prabhupada: Children will be born.... If you are.... If the child is sinful, then it will go to the womb of a mother who will kill him. That's all. By the will. By the.... That he should be punished. One who has used contraceptive and abortion method, by the will of God he will enter another mother, and the mother will kill him.
Cyavana: But the Bible, it indicates...
Prabhupada: Now, now, you see, try, understand. You are very good Bible quoter, but try to understand each and everything. Simply you go on quoting, but understand what is that quotation. It is by the will of God. You have committed sinful life by contraceptive method. Now you enter in the womb of another mother and be killed. That is Bible.
Cyavana: So what is described there was not actually God consciousness or...
Prabhupada: No, it is God consciousness if you understand it, that "I am now being punished by the will of God. I have done sinful activities." That is God conscious.
Guru dasa: God gives what everyone wants.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Guru dasa: If they desire that, they get that.
Prabhupada: :You wanted this punishment; therefore you get it.
Pusta Krsna: People are thinking that the punishment is something worse than this, that "This is very nice. We can live here and be happy, and the punishment is in hell."
Prabhupada: No, no.
Pusta Krsna: "Here we live happily."
Prabhupada: That.... No, no. That is the nature of the living being, that he is happy by nature because he is part and parcel of Krsna, sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah [Bs. 5.1]. So ananda is nature, but he is finding, trying to find out nature in sinful life. Therefore he is being punished. That he does not know.
Guru dasa: So that's his ignorance.
Prabhupada: That is ignorance. His nature is to become happy. He is happy, happy. Just like our natural position is we are healthy. Nature has made this body. But we create such situation that we become ill, sick. And at that time we see, "Oh, I am..." What is that? "I am infected. I have been contaminated." Go to the doctor, injection. But the natural life is no disease.
Guru dasa: Yes.
Prabhupada: But you create a situation; therefore become diseased.
Guru dasa: Otherwise it wouldn't be called "diseased," because it would be normal to be sick. But disease means...
Prabhupada: Normal life means no sickness.
Guru dasa: Yes.
Prabhupada: And as soon as there is sickness, that means punishment. So if you want to be punished, then violate the hygienic laws. You can see that there is hospital and medical treatment and medicine -- for whom?
Pusta Krsna: Sick people.
Prabhupada: No, for the human society. Not for the birds, beasts. But they follow nature's law. But this rascal violates nature's law and suffers.
Yadubara: What about for the devotees, Srila Prabhupada? Sometimes they are very sick, have so many...
Prabhupada: Devotees.... To become devotee is not so cheap thing. You don't think that because you have got a tilaka you have become devotee. Why do you think like that?
Pusta Krsna: Jaya Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: That Bhaktivinoda Thakura, eita eka kalira chela, nake tilaka, galaya mala:(?) "Here is another follower of Kali. He has got tilaka and mala." Sahaja bhajana kacen mamu, sanga laiya parera wala (?): "He is worshiping, bhajana, taking another's wife." Sahaja bhajana kacen mamu, sanga laiya parera wala, ei ta eka kalira chela: "Here is a servant of Kali. Simply he has changed his dress with tilaka and mala." Bhaktivinoda Thakura says. If you take tilaka and mala and do all nonsense things, then you are not a devotee. You are Kali-chela. To become a devotee is not so easy thing.
Atreya Rsi: Devotee means perfect.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes. Certainly. Devotee means sa gunan samatityaitan brahma-bhuyaya kalpate [Bg. 14.26]. He is above these material laws. That is devotee. Brahma-bhuyaya kalpate. He is in the Brahman stage. That is devotee. If you take.... That means sahajiya. "Because I have got a tilaka and mala, I have become devotee." This kind of cheating will not do.
Atreya Rsi: And in this modern age, this cheating is very prominent...
Prabhupada: No, no. Modern or old, anyone who is a conditioned soul, he has got cheating propensity, four defects. One of them is the cheating propensity.
Atreya Rsi: Yes. But the mental stage in this age is very strong, mental. They think mentally they have found a solution.
Prabhupada: That they can do.
Atreya Rsi: But they...
Prabhupada: Within mind you can think, "I have become emperor of the world." That you can do. Who can check you? But that is not the actual fact.
Atreya Rsi: That is the characteristic.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is mental concoction. Within mind you can think, "I have become the proprietor of the banks, all the banks." Madman that is. He's a madman.
Atreya Rsi: They have so many philosophies, but it's all mental.
Prabhupada: All mental. We say, therefore, don't say "philosophy." We say "mental speculation."
Atreya Rsi: Jaya.
Prabhupada: Philosophy means tattva-darsinah. That is described, tattva-darsinah. One has seen the truth, he is philosopher. And who is hovering in the mental concoction platform, he's a rascal. "I think." This is.... Their all European philosophy is...
Atreya Rsi: "I believe."
Prabhupada: "I believe," "In my opinion." He's a rascal, and he is giving his opinion.
Cyavana: Prabhupada, are the laws of karma written?
Prabhupada: Laws of karma is you touch fire, your finger will be burned. This is laws of karma. You cannot avoid it.
Cyavana: They are so complicated, though. Are they actually written?
Prabhupada: That is another.... This is the law of karma. If you do something which is forbidden, then you suffer. This is laws of karma. Or you enjoy. Both good and bad. That is laws of karma. Either you take the result good or the bad.
Atreya Rsi: To a devotee it is very clear, the laws of karma. He sees how that God, Krsna, is just.
Prabhupada: Yes. Devotee means tattva-darsi. He has seen the real truth. Devotee means who follows Krsna. So Krsna is giving the real truth. If you take, then you are devotee. If you don't take, you are nondevotee.
Pusta Krsna: What is the role of mercy if one takes or doesn't take?
Prabhupada: Mercy means.... Suppose you are a devotee. Unknowingly or by some bad habit you have done something wrong. That is excused. But if you intentionally do, that "I am devotee; Krsna will excuse me," then you are rascal.
Gopala Krsna: That's the greatest offense.
Prabhupada: Yes. Cheating. Cheating Krsna. Cheating Krsna is no business. That is to be punished. You cannot cheat Krsna. But if by accident, knowingly or unknowingly you have done something which is not good, that is excused. Sva-pada-mulam bhajatah priyasya. If you are actually, because you have given so much service to Krsna, you have become very dear to Him, so unknowingly you have done, committed sin -- excused. Bhajatah priyasya. This word is used. You must have to become very dear to Him. Then if you accidentally commit some sin, that is excused.
Guru dasa: What does "unknowingly" mean, Srila...
Prabhupada: Unknowingly means..., suppose you are a smoker. So now you have given up everything. But in the association of some smoker you incline, "All right, let me smoke." Then you regret, "Oh, I have done this." It can happen. So that is excused. But if you think, "Now I am a devotee of Krsna. I can smoke like anything, and everything will be excused," then you are a rascal.
Atreya Rsi: Also, Srila Prabhupada, we are knowing that we are so sinful and we're so rascals, but having the opportunity of association of pure devotee and Krsna, that's also mercy...
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes, yes.
Atreya Rsi: Because we can see that we are..., our hearts are not clean, and we are constantly thinking of maya...
Prabhupada: Education, education.
Atreya Rsi: This is mercy. This is greatest mercy.
Prabhupada: Just like you are being educated. Not that cent percent mark you are getting, but because you are trying to be educated, so that is also good. That is also good.
Devotee(1): Therefore the association is most important.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes, very important, so that if I commit some mistake, I'll regret: "Oh, my other associate, he is not coming to act in that..." That chance he'll get.
Atreya Rsi: So we pay a little attention to Krsna, but Krsna gives us a lot of attention.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes.
Atreya Rsi: That is mercy.
Prabhupada: If you give.... If you go forward, Krsna, one step, He comes forward ten steps.
Atreya Rsi: He runs.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is His mercy.
Atreya Rsi: That is mercy.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Hari-sauri: I just read on one of the pages of that Bhagavatam where you said in a purport that Krsna desires that we go back home a lot more strongly than we desire to go back home.
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes. Therefore He comes. He is very anxious to take back His sons, back to home, back.... Just like father. If he sees, "My son is suffering there, leaving home," he tries to get him back.
Atreya Rsi: Unfortunately we don't even desire.
Prabhupada: And therefore you are madness.
Devotee: But the materialists will say...
Guru dasa: Therefore you have come.
Devotee: ...Srila Prabhupada, that if God is, if He is actually wanting us to go back, then why is He causing suffering?
Prabhupada: Eh?
Devotee: If He wants us to come to back home to Godhead...
Prabhupada: But, you rascal, you are suffering. He says, "Come back." You don't go.
Atreya Rsi: Because He has given you freedom and this is...
Prabhupada: He says, "My dear boy, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]" But you don't do. You must suffer. It is your creation, suffering. You must suffer.
Devotee: They say, "If He is all-loving, why is He...?"
Prabhupada: Loving, but.... You are.... I love you. I say, "Do this." If you don't do it, then...?
Devotee: It's reciprocal.
Prabhupada: Yes. You must suffer.
Yadubara: So the suffering is His mercy also.
Prabhupada: Yes. Suffering means he'll be purified. Suffering is the process of purification.
Atreya Rsi: And part of His laws.... It's within His laws.
Prabhupada: You have infected some disease. You suffer. Then the enviousness(?) of Krsna will go away by suffering.
Guru dasa: So the pure devotee is sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah [Bs. 5.1].
Prabhupada: Yes.
Atreya Rsi: So this question of freedom of jiva and control of Krsna, that there is freedom but at the same time there is no freedom, is a very fine line between the two that sometimes we do not understand.
Prabhupada: But why don't you understand? Just like you belong to a free nation, the American. Does it mean you are free to do anything and everything?
Atreya Rsi: With your limited freedom.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Atreya Rsi: There's a fine line between this freedom.
Prabhupada: When you say, "I belong to this free nation," then yes, you are free. But that does not mean that you can do anything and everything.
Pusta Krsna: Take that example of the habit, if someone is smoking out of habit. So again. So is he free in that smoking, or is it..., has he completely surrendered his freedom?
Prabhupada: No, no.... These things are very common. Just like in your country the government has written on the cigarette box, "It is harmful to health." But if you still smoke at your risk, do it.
Atreya Rsi: So freedom.... You can smoke, but you cannot avoid suffering from the result.
Prabhupada: Yes, from the result.
Atreya Rsi: You have to suffer.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Atreya Rsi: This is the law.
Prabhupada: Yes. This is the law.
Atreya Rsi: And you cannot smoke outside the laws. You cannot smoke a cigarette...
Prabhupada: This is.... Already warning is there that "You smoke; you suffer." And if you still do that, suffer. What can be done? Common thing.
Gopala Krsna: The freedom is always there, minute independence.
Atreya Rsi: Minute.
Guru dasa: Freedom with responsibility.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Guru dasa: Just like they say that you have the freedom to yell "There's a fire" in a theater, but you don't do it.
Prabhupada: So many examples are there. Freedom is there, but you are not absolutely free to do whatever you like.
Guru dasa: Because of the stringent laws of nature.
Prabhupada: Because you are small. Just like children. He has got freedom, playing. But when he is doing something wrong, father, "You don't do this. Don't do this. Don't do this." But if he does it, even he is children, even he's child, he'll suffer. He cannot say, "I am child. I did not know, father." Then that does not matter. You must suffer. You must suffer, even though you are child.
Atreya Rsi: And, Srila Prabhupada....
Prabhupada: Father takes care, "My dear child, don't do this. Don't touch fire." But still, he touches; he must suffer. The fire will not excuse because he is child. That is not possible. Nature's law will act.
Pusta Krsna: This idea of freedom and independence, is it possible for anyone theoretically to surrender to Krsna at any time?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Pusta Krsna: So let's say someone is in a very degraded condition of life, modes of ignorance, passion. Their mind is always disturbed. Is surrender to Krsna.... Is it possible that it can be independent even of the mind?
Prabhupada: Hm?
Pusta Krsna: In other words, let's say someone's mind is...
Prabhupada: You are independent of mind always. It is your mind. You are not mind.
Pusta Krsna: Yes.
Prabhupada: Then you are independent of mind always.
Pusta Krsna: So even a person merged in the mode of ignorance can by some good fortune surrender to Krsna.
Prabhupada: No good fortune. God, Krsna, says, "You do it"; you do it. Here immediately you become fortunate. There is no question of waiting for becoming fortunate. You become fortunate immediately. Suppose if I say, "Take this bag, 100,000 dollars." You can take it. Immediately you become rich man. Why don't you take it?
Guru dasa: How does krpa-siddhi work, Srila Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: Hm?
Guru dasa: Krpa-siddhi. How does that work?
Prabhupada: Krpa-siddhi means that you are not willing take this bag. I say, "Take it, take it, take it." (laughter) "No." That is krpa-siddhi. Even you are unwilling, I give you in your pocket, push it. That is krpa-siddhi. (laughter)
Gopala Krsna: We should not wait for that.
Yadubara: All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
Atreya Rsi: Individual's freedom, when he is ignorant, it is not really freedom because it's completely under the control...
Prabhupada: And when he gets the money, and he spends it, and he sees, "My poverty is gone," then he becomes thankful. "Oh, it is so merciful that he has given me this thing."
Atreya Rsi: The individual freedom, when he is in the mode of ignorance, is completely under the laws of material nature. When the individual makes spiritual advancement...
Prabhupada: Individual freedom means.... We should always know our freedom is limited.
Atreya Rsi: Limited. Yes. But...
Prabhupada: So we are not.... Because the Absolute, so how you can..., your freedom can be absolute?
Atreya Rsi: So the karmi thinks.... His freedom is limited to thinking "Am I going to eat this meat rare or well done?" That is the sort of freedom he is getting.
Prabhupada: No, you have to...
Atreya Rsi: Completely ignorance.
Prabhupada: Just like a thief. He also has got the conscience, "Why shall I steal?"
Atreya Rsi: "This or this."
Prabhupada: "This or this." But he knows that "If I do it, I shall be punished."
Atreya Rsi: Yes. But when an individual spirit...
Pusta Krsna: Is that actual freedom, though? Is that freedom?
Prabhupada: No, I have already said that you cannot have absolute freedom.
Pusta Krsna: No, but is the spirit soul implicated in that decision in any way, or is it just the modes of nature working, "Well, I'll take this instead of that."
Prabhupada: What is that?
Pusta Krsna: Is the spirit soul implicated in that decision, or is it...
Prabhupada: What is that decision?
Pusta Krsna: Let's say, "I'll go to the cinema, or I'll go to the restaurant." So is the spirit soul implicated in that decision in any way, or is it simply the three modes of material nature working?
Atreya Rsi: The three modes.
Prabhupada: I do not follow what is your...
Pusta Krsna: There's a situation. Either I'll go to the cinema or I'll go to the restaurant. So is the spirit soul...
Prabhupada: Both of them are sinful.
Pusta Krsna: Yes. So how is the spirit soul involved in it? Is the spirit soul choosing, or is the decision already made by his karma?
Prabhupada: Karma, karma... You can make your kar... You are doing that. Karma you are creating every moment by desire. Karma is.... What is that? Thinking, feeling, willing. You think of something; then you do it. That means you create your karma. You are thinking that "I shall go to the cinema"; then you go. That is karma.
Atreya Rsi: The question is choice.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is...
Atreya Rsi: Choice.
Prabhupada: That is desire. Therefore bhakti means you shall not desire anything except to serve Krsna. Then you are safe. Because you are desiring so many things for your sense gratification, you are becoming implicated.
Atreya Rsi: Yes. So the point is that if a...
Prabhupada: Just like a good child. He has decided, "I shall do only what my father says." Then he is safe. And as soon as he misuses his indep..., little independence, he is complicated. So decide like that, that "I shall not do anything which is not ordered by Krsna." Then it is all right. Otherwise you'll suffer. Anyabhilasita-sunyam [Brs. 1.1.11]. Make it zero. Then you are safe. Anukulyena krsnanusilanam [Cc. Madhya 19.167]. Simply do, act, what Krsna says; then you are safe. Why don't you do that? That is also independence. You are misusing independence. You are misusing. Then you must suffer. The government says, "Do according to the law." Then you are safe. Government will give all protection. And if you violate law, you must suffer.
Devotee: So take it that there is a man, Srila Prabhupada, who is not very learned in sastra, but he only simply does what his guru tells him.
Prabhupada: What is learned? What is learned? A child, does he require learning. When the father says, "You do it," does it require any university education?
Devotee: No.
Prabhupada: "He is my father." That's all.
Guru dasa: Nara-priya(?) do not know sastras. They know unalloyed devotion.
Prabhupada: No, that is the nature. A child generally abides by the order of the parent. They are playing. The parent says, "Don't do it! Sit down!" Immediately sit down. That is the nature. So why don't you break your nature, that "My duty is to carry out the order of the supreme father?" Then you are safe.
Atreya Rsi: And when you carry out that order -- you fully surrender -- then you enjoy full freedom.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is full freedom.
Atreya Rsi: That is the freedom.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is freedom.
Atreya Rsi: That is absolute freedom.
Prabhupada: Full freedom means to be under the order of the Supreme. That is full freedom. That is full freedom.
Atreya Rsi: The cinema or restaurant is not freedom. It's completely conditioning under the laws of material nature. But fully surrendered soul is fully free.
Prabhupada: No, no, if you simply, even if you want to go to a cinema...
Pusta Krsna: He's still responsible for going.
Prabhupada: If you ask, "Father, I wish to see cinema," if father says, "All right, we'll go," that is not sinful. But you go in your own whims -- that is sinful. Tena tyaktena bhunjitha [Iso mantra 1].
Cyavana: Sometimes it's difficult as devotees for us to know whether we're doing the right thing or whether we're just speculating.
Prabhupada: And therefore you have to consult your guru.
Cyavana: Yes.
Atreya Rsi: It's because we are not surrendered.
Cyavana: But even in small things, just day-to-day activities...
Prabhupada: There is no small thing. Everything big thing for a devotee.
Sudama: I've discovered, Srila Prabhupada, the way to do that, of course, is to read your books.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Sudama: By reading your books, then all of the...
Prabhupada: Therefore the books are there.
Sudama: Even practical, everything...
Atreya Rsi: But without attitude of devotion, nothing will work.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Atreya Rsi: Attitude of devotion must be there.
Prabhupada: The attitude, devotion, is there. Otherwise why one should come to our camp? But it must be properly utilized. It should not be misused. If you go to school and if you don't read books, you'll fail in the examination.
Guru dasa: But the attitude of devotion should be there every moment, so everything...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Guru dasa: ...is very meaningful. Everything is a big thing. When we go out we should realize we're doing it for Krsna.
Prabhupada: That is said, man-mana. Think of Krsna; He'll guide you. Very easy thing. Man-mana. Always think of Krsna, then there is no question of falling down. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. These four things, if strictly done, he is safe. He is safe. Always think of Krsna, become His devotee, offer Him obeisances and.... Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji, and worship Him. This is Deity worship. That will engage in always in thinking, in offering obeisances. And if we strictly follow only these, these four principles, mam evaisyasi satyam te: "You are coming back to Me without any doubt." But instead of thinking Krsna, we are thinking something else, planning something, misusing independence.
Gopala Krsna: Bhimasena, I was speaking to him two days ago. He says that he'll turn over that temple to us. He wants to meet you, so I'm going to call him to come and see you.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Gopala Krsna: He's a big talker, but I was flattering him, and I said, "If you transfer it over to..." (laughter) He said, "I'll do it when Prabhupada comes." So I'll tell him to come and see you today and.... I told him if he transfers it over to us, then we can build better on the top. He has already built something downstairs, and we can make it a very beautiful temple.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes.
Gopala Krsna: We'll call it Bhimasena.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Gopala Krsna: He wants to become famous, so I said, "Everybody will know that you built a temple there."
Prabhupada: So it is good idea.
Gopala Krsna: Yes, the location is very good. It's right in the center. And they have Radha-Krsna Deities there, plus they have Rama, Sita, Laksmana, Hanuman, which we can also worship.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes.
Gopala Krsna: Only problem is they have Durga.
Prabhupada: Durga, so we can worship, giving Durga the prasadam of Rama or Krsna. That's it.
Gopala Krsna: Yes, something can be worked out.
Prabhupada: Not directly. His prasada. If we can worship ordinary human being, why not Durga? But we give prasadam. We shall give. So don't tell all these things now.
Gopala Krsna: No, I didn't tell him anything.
Prabhupada: We do not say that we do not believe in the demigods. No, we believe in. But they are servants. That's all. We cannot make the servant and the master on the equal footing. That is all. We worship Durga, srsti-sthiti-pralaya-sadhana-saktir eka chayeva yasya bhuvanani vibharti durga [Bs. 5.44]. Now, what is the function? Icchanurupam api yasya ca cestate sa govindam adi... She is acting by the desire of the Supreme Lord, Govinda.
Guru dasa: Better than we are and should be worshiped.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Guru dasa: Better devotee than we are and should be worshiped.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes.
Atreya Rsi: As a devotee.
Prabhupada: Yes, she's a devotee. Just like we say "prabhu." Prabhu means your master. So "Because you are devotee, we accept you as master." Master means "I am ready to serve you because you are devotee. I am your servant." Dasa-dasa-dasanudasah [Cc. Madhya 13.80]. "Because you are devotee, I am prepared to serve you. Otherwise not."
Cyavana: Do the demigods sometimes forget their positions?
Prabhupada: Why you are serving me? If I had been an ordinary person, why...? You would have not.... Because you accept that "You are devotee," therefore you serve. So as soon as we find a devotee, immediately serve him. Chadiya vaisnava-seva, nistara payeche keba. Without serving a devotee, who can be elevated? It is our duty. So we can serve the devotee.
Pusta Krsna: Srila Prabhupada? Why is...
Prabhupada: Prahlada Maharaja was offered, "Whatever you like, you take." He said, "No, no, I don't want anything. Please engage me in the service of Your servant." He rejected everything. He simply said, nija-dasya-yogam: "Kindly engage me in the service of Your servant." That is wanted.
Pusta Krsna: Srila Prabhupada, Prahlada Maharaja...
Prabhupada: He did not want even direct service. "Engage me in Your service," he did not say.
Guru dasa: No.
Prabhupada: He said, "Engage me in Your servant's service."
Guru dasa: So if we see people in the world as potential devotees, we should also serve them so they can become good devotees.
Prabhupada: That is not service. That is mercy. One who is potential devotee, to show him mercy, develop him to become a devotee, that is mercy. That is not service. Service can be rendered to the higher person. And to the lower person you can show your mercy.
Guru dasa: Oh, that's a good distinction.
Hari-sauri: That's said in Upadesamrta...
Prabhupada: Yes. One who is lower than you, he requires your mercy. You give him mercy. And who is higher than you, you give him service. Not that Vivekananda did, that everyone service. No, service to the higher person. And to the lower person? Mercy.
Guru dasa: Someone asked me the other day if I knew Swami...
Prabhupada: And equal person? Friendship.
Guru dasa: Yes.
Prabhupada: With equal, friendship. With higher, service. And with lower, mercy.
Guru dasa: And envious, ignore.
Prabhupada: Yes, ignore. Neutral: "You go to hell. We don't mind."
Guru dasa: Somebody asked me the other day if I knew Swami Vivekananda. I said "Viveka-who?" He said, "Vivekananda is very famous in the West. Do you know him?" I said, "Viveka-who? I have never heard of him."
Prabhupada: (chuckles) So he was little surprised.
Cyavana: They made some propaganda, that's all.
Atreya Rsi: That's Guru dasa's trick.
Hari-sauri: Srila Prabhupada, if one serves the higher devotees and shows compassion to less advanced devotees, then where is the question, say, for a position of an advanced devotee who is feeling himself to be the lowest? So is that distinction still there of higher and lower? If he is feeling himself to be the lowest?
Prabhupada: He does not feel lowest. He takes sympathy that "Here is a person. He can be a devotee. So let me raise him to the standard." He does not think that he is lowest. Devotee always thinks that he is lower than the worm. But it is the duty. It is the duty. It does not mean that he is thinking, "I am higher." No.
Guru dasa: That's again mercy.
Prabhupada: Mercy.
Pusta Krsna: In other words, he doesn't consider that he's advanced and that therefore he is showing mercy to lower.
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes. He is always thinking, "I am lower than the worm, but Lord Krsna wants, so let me do some service. That's all."
Guru dasa: That is our occupation, to show mercy to others.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Atreya Rsi: And amongst devotees, Godbrothers, an advanced devotee is one who sees that "Everybody is serving Krsna so nicely..."
Prabhupada: Yes.
Atreya Rsi: "...so let me assist them."
Prabhupada: Yes.
Atreya Rsi: "Let me facilitate their service."
Prabhupada: Yes. Therefore we say prabhu. Prabhu means "You are my master. Please order me. What can I do for you?" That should be the attitude. [break] ..."Guru dasa Prabhu, please come here and brush my shoes." (laughter) What kind of prabhu? He should say, "Guru dasa Prabhu, can I brush your shoes?" That is real Vaisnava, not that "Guru dasa Prabhu, come here and brush my shoes." Other devotees, they do not come for morning class?
Gopala Krsna: For the walk?
Prabhupada: Not for walk. At least we shall hold morning class or not?
Gopala Krsna: Oh, yes, Prabhupada, please. A few devotees are staying at the hotel here.
Pusta Krsna: There is a program tonight if you'd rather.... There is a program this evening, going out, the Rotary Club. So if you would rather just give class this evening.
Prabhupada: No, no, regularly we hold morning class anywhere. So.... So that morning class is not going to be held here?
Gopala Krsna: In the temple we have it. They had it this morning, but.... (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: So many kalakendras. Kala means cheating, kala. In Bengal, when it is called kala, kala deki dichi means cheating... (Hindi) I think in other countries also somewhere, they do so, that "I cannot do anything." Eh? In your country do they not like showing this thumb?Hamsaduta: No.
Devotee (2): what does that mean?
Prabhupada: In India it is. Means "You are useless. You could not do anything."
Passerby: Good morning, sir.
Prabhupada: Hare Krsna. Hare Krsna. There are so many kalakendras but no kendra for understanding atma. Huh? Apasyatam atma-tattvam [SB 2.1.2]. In Bhagavata it is said, apasyatam. They do not know what is atma-tattvam, these rascals. Grhesu grhamedhinam. Apasyatam atma-tattvam [SB 2.1.2]. These rascals, they do not know atma-tattva, the science of self-realization. Bahir-artha-maninah. They have been simply external. They are giving importance to the music, but the person who is playing the music, he has no information. He is thinking this tongue is vibrating music, such a rascal. If the tongue is vibrating music, then why -- he is dead -- why the tongue does not play music anymore? And the ear is there. Why he does not hear any more music? If this body is all, then the body is there, the tongue is there, the ear is there -- why there is no response of the music? Apasyatam atma-tattvam [SB 2.1.2]. And these rascals, they do not know who is the person who is singing and who is hearing. Therefore they have been called as mudhas. Who is singing, who is hearing, he does not know. Apasyatam atma-tattvam grhesu grhamedhinam [SB 2.1.2].
Devotee (1): You were saying in Mauritius that they are imperfect and they are taking advice from the imperfect. Therefore very difficult for them to understand, because they don't take advice from the perfect person, Krsna.
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] ...apasyatam. They cannot see. They see only that the tongue is vibrating, the ear is hearing. And the dead man, the same ear is there, the tongue is there. Why there is no music? What they will answer?
Tejas: They say it's a chemical interaction.
Prabhupada: What is that chemical? Eh? Why talk nonsense? Chemical reaction? Bring that chemical and let him hear again. What is the answer? Why do they say nonsense which he does not know? Chemical reaction, if it is chemical reaction, bring chemical and inject it. What is the answer?
Harikesa: That chemical is very complicated. They haven't found...
Prabhupada: Then you do not know. First of all admit you are talking nonsense. The chemical you do not know. Still you are talking nonsense. Therefore you are rascal. Why do you talk nonsense if you do not know? What is the answer? If you do not know, why do you talk just like wise man? Then you are a nonsense. Asocyan anvasocas tvam prajna-vadams... [Bg. 2.11]. You are talking like a very learned scientist, but you are a rascal, fool. Challenge them like that.
Tejas: They think that today they do not know...
Prabhupada: "They think."
Tejas: ...but tomorrow, they think, will know.
Prabhupada: That is another rascal point. Therefore I say, "Kick them on their face tomorrow." He's offering postdated check. (laughter) Eh? Even if you are coming of a very millionaire's family, but if you give me a check postdated, shall I accept it? A sane man? No. Bring cash; then talk. (laughter) So these rascals, they have no cash. They have got only paper, postdated check. And who will accept it unless one is another fool, rascal, another rascal.
Tejas: They are bluffing.
Prabhupada: That's all. Bluffing business goes on when there are many rascals. You can bluff the rascals, not the intelligent man. Who is cheated? One who is a rascal, he is cheated. Not the intelligent man is cheated.
Harikesa: They should have their salaries paid by postdated check.
Prabhupada: No, they will not accept that. That they will not accept.
Harikesa: "In the future we will pay you."
Tejas: When you find the chemicals.
Prabhupada: "Now you starve. In future I shall pay." "How shall I eat?" "Now you starve. In future you'll get payment." You do not know what is the chemical, how it is acting, and depending on your future knowledge, and still, you are talking like a very great scientist. This rascaldom should be stopped by kicking on their face. Huh? So? Ambarisa Maharaja, do you agree?
Ambarisa: Yes.
Prabhupada: Thank you. [break] ...if they know the chemicals, why they open deaf and dumb school? Let the chemical be injected and they will be cured from dumbness and deafness. And where is that chemical? Hm?
Harikesa: I mean, after all, isn't it just a matter of time, because we've already invented new skin now.
Prabhupada: Again rascaldom. Again rascaldom.
Harikesa: Yes, but just think of what we've already done. We've made new skin.
Prabhupada: What you have done? What you have done? A man... A man is...
Harikesa: I tell you, we've made new skin. If somebody gets burned we can put new skin on.
Prabhupada: A man, when he is blind, what you can do? You can simply make some experiment. Then you say, "We tried. We could not do it."
Harikesa: Ah, but now we're putting in new eyeballs.
Prabhupada: That cannot see. (laughter) That is another... So how they are bluffing, just see.
Harikesa: In Russia they've made dogs with two heads. They've put another head on a dog in Russia, and now the dog has two heads.
Tejas: Really?
Harikesa: Yes.
Tejas: Such advancement.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Tejas: Such advancement, a two-headed dog.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Gopala Krsna: Eventually they're going to try to have men with two heads. They first experiment with animals and then try it on men.
Prabhupada: Therefore Ravana had ten heads, and he was killed in spite of ten heads. Still, he could not save himself from the hands of Rama, although he had ten heads. He thought that "I have now ten heads. Who can be more intelligent than me?" And still, Ramacandra proved, "Yes, I am better intelligent than you." [break] ...Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan?
Tejas: Yes, Srila Prabhupada.
Gopala Krsna: [break] ...even though we're here. Kalakendra.
Prabhupada: What is that, here?
Gopala Krsna: You said there's a kendra everywhere, kala.
Prabhupada: Kala means this. (laughter) Ei kala. [break] Prabhakara was working here. He was employed here. He was staying on that room, so I also stayed with him two days. [break] ...count of his unsteadiness he has lost so many good jobs. I do
not know...
Tejas: Some man was telling me that... One M.P. was telling me that there are many criminal cases against him also now.
Gopala Krsna: How did you find that out?
Tejas: He told me. I don't know why. This Dr. Lokescandra? He told me that "Acarya Prabhakara has many criminal cases against him."
Prabhupada: [break] Which way we have to go?
Tejas: This way, Srila Prabhupada.
Devotee (1): There was a poster on the wall, said they are opening a big exhibition of Russian books in Punjab, and the chief minister, he is going to open that.
Prabhupada: Many books?
Devotee (1): Big exhibition of Russian books. They are teaching the Russian (indistinct) all over India. (Hindi)
Prabhupada: So why don't you exhibit our books? Let them come to competition. What books we have got, compare with our books.
Devotee (1): What they say is that this philosophy is very old. They say that this philosophy is very old.
Prabhupada: Yes. So we are giving old wine in new bottle. If it is old, why the up-to-date Western boys are taking? It may be old for you rascals, but those who are intelligent...
Devotee (1): They think that they are frustrated. They have nothing more to do except this.
Prabhupada: Then why they take this? Why not your philosophy? Why they take this philosophy? Why not the Russian philosophy?
Devotee (1): So they are going to take. That's the reason they are putting the Russian books.
Harikesa: Well, lots of people take the Russian philosophy.
Prabhupada: No, they are exhibiting here in India, but why in Europe, America, they are not taking?
Harikesa: But there are many Marxists in America. Like on the subway...
Prabhupada: Many Marxists, there are many capitalists. That is another thing. But why the Russians could not make everyone Marxist in spite of so much propaganda? What is the basic principle of Russian philosophy?
Tejas: What is the basic principle?
Hamsaduta: Follow the teachings of Marx.
Prabhupada: No, no. What is that teaching?
Gopala Krsna: Everything belongs to the state.
Ambarisa: The worker is supreme.
Hamsaduta: Everyone should work for the state, and the state will distribute fairly.
Krsna-caitanya: The basis of the philosophy is that matter is supreme.
Ambarisa: And all matter is the same.
Prabhupada: Matter is supreme. Then why the matter does not move independently?
Krsna-caitanya: That they have no answer.
Prabhupada: Then? Then another rascal. If matter is supreme, why don't you combine matter and let it move. So what is that supreme which is moving this matter? If they do not know, then again a rascal, in spite of so much philosophy and so much communism. Why, when Stalin and Lenin died, they simply remained matter? Why it was not moving? Where is that matter?
Gopala Krsna: That they are working on.
Prabhupada: Again the same rascal. Again another rascal. They are working; therefore we must be satisfied. Postdated check. How you say all these things?
Harikesa: Well, their philosophy is just a social philosophy.
Prabhupada: Whatever it may be, it is not perfect.
Harikesa: They say, "From everybody according to their means and to everybody according to their needs." As you work...
Prabhupada: Then why there are so many enemies? Why the Americans do not like them, Chinese do not like them?
Devotee (3): Now they write in the mod... I see in the modern textbook in the Delhi schools. They make counterproposal. They said, "Because the Indian philosophy is not so perfect, India has become economically backwards on account of following the..."
Prabhupada: What economical backwards?
Devotee (3): They say India is very poor country.
Prabhupada: No. Indians economical backwards because they have given up their own culture. When India was actually standing on the old culture, they were never defeated. Even the Mohammedans, they ruled over India for eight hundred years, but they could not defeat the Indian culture. But the British government are clever. They spoiled the Indian culture. Therefore they are poverty-stricken. Otherwise if India would have continued in his own culture... The Gandhi started the boycott movement. So Indian culture automatically boycotted anything foreign. We know in our childhood nothing foreign-made could be used in some ceremony. Even this cloth, it must be country-made, that, what is called?
Hamsaduta: Khadi.
Prabhupada: Khadi, yes. No mill-made cloth can be used. That was Indian culture. They would not touch even foreign medicine. Dr. Bose, Kartick Chandra Bose, he told me that "You do not know how much we had to flatter to accept this British medicine." They would not touch quinine, anything foreign-made. This was Indian culture.
Harikesa: Well, the basic flaw with Indian culture is that some people are very rich and some people are very poor.
Prabhupada: No, no. Then why in your country there are hippies lying on the street? Why? Why they have accepted poverty?
Harikesa: That's a temporary thing.
Prabhupada: India is poor and rich, and why they are voluntarily poor?
Harikesa: That was because they were all intoxicated.
Prabhupada: Then you cannot say that there is no poor. There is voluntarily poor. You cannot say there is no poor.
Harikesa: Well, in our Russian system we are trying to abolish that poor by making, take money from the rich.
Prabhupada: Again that, "We are trying to abolish," the postdated check again.
Ambarisa: In Russia, everyone is poor.
Prabhupada: Everyone is poor.
Harikesa: But at least they're equal.
Prabhupada: Well, when you become poor, then naturally it is equal. There is no rich man. Naturally you become equal. If everyone is fool, then everyone is equal. That's all.
Harikesa: But everybody in Russia is so strong.
Prabhupada: What is that strong?
Ambarisa: They can lift all kinds of weight and fight very strongly. Very strong people. So they're not starving.
Prabhupada: No, no, they are stronger than the lions and the elephant? Are they stronger than these animals? Are they? Are the Russians stronger than the elephant and the lion?
Harikesa: But they're stronger than the Europeans.
Prabhupada: Then the lion is better than them. The elephant is better than them. Why do you call them, "They are animals"? They are better situated. One lion can kill hundreds of Russians. Then lion is better than the Russian? You have to accept that.
Harikesa: I mean, but they're not poor because they're so, you know, they're well fed.
Prabhupada: There everyone is poor, begging. You are talking theoretically. I went to Moscow. The taxi driver was wanting something excess. They are so poor, begging, "Give me something more." They are so poor. Most of the people, they are walking on the street. There is no taxi. Nobody can pay for taxi. This is their situation.
Harikesa: Yes, but why should somebody be rich and I be poor? What gives him the right to have money?
Prabhupada: That is everywhere. That is called, that... He is born in a rich family; I am born in a poor family. So why this is happening?
Harikesa: Yes, that's unfair. I mean, I should take his money.
Prabhupada: No, no, not unfair. This is nature's arrangement, uccavacca. Why one has become animal? Why one has become man? The same living entity.
Harikesa: Chance.
Prabhupada: Again rascaldom, "chance." Who is making this chance? Can I make you by chance a dog? That is not possible. There is no such chance. It is by karma-phala. Karanam guna-sangah. The chance is that you are rascal, fool; you do not know what chance will make me what. Just like you infect some disease; you suffer from that disease. So this happens to the rascal. One who is intelligent, he does not infect. He is always cautious. Therefore this chance of infection is not there. Actually you cannot say "chance." It is your ignorance. You create chance. Because you do not know what will happen after something, on account of ignorance it is chance. But if you are fully aware, there is no question of chance. An intelligent student, he does not think, "By chance I may be passed." He reads properly. He appears in the examination, give the proper answer. It is not chance. And if he thinks, "All right, by chance I will be passing the..." Is it very intelligent? These rascals are talking like that. There is no question of chance. On account of ignorance they commit something infectious, and they suffer. And because they cannot explain, they say it is chance. It is not chance. It is due to some cause.
Harikesa: Actually Marx was very expert at giving economic causes. For example, he said that they would start off with this capitalistic system.
Prabhupada: No, what Marx has explained that a man is born in a rich family, from the birth he is millionaire, and another man is trying whole life, but he could not secure more than his provision? That's all. Why this is here?
Harikesa: That's due to the capitalistic system. Because he is born in a certain kind of a system, then this hereditary birth and wealth comes. But that capitalistic system, if it's more in a socialistic or communistic system, then there is no possibility of that happening. So therefore this inequality doesn't exist.
Prabhupada: They are trying for the last fifty years. Why the capitalism is not yet gone? Fifty years at least. They started their movement in 1917. Huh? So how many years? More than fifty. Sixty years. Sixty years. What they have done, progress?
Harikesa: Well, actually, Russia was the wrong place for communism to go. According to Marx, Russia was the last place that should be communistic, because it was agricultural. But the first place should have been like England,
Prabhupada: So why they did not do that? Another rascaldom. Why you are taking chance in Russia, the foolish country?
Harikesa: So that when if a country like England or America would become communistic, that would be very good.
Prabhupada: Why would become? It is not the dictation of rascal Marx. Why they would? Why he is expecting like a fool like that? Why they would accept that philosophy?
Harikesa: Well, they will have to accept it.
Prabhupada: No, when they... That is another thing. Again, "they will have," future. Again rascal.
Harikesa: Because just like New York has gone become bankrupt, so all the cities will go bankrupt, and then people will not have employment.
Prabhupada: That is another thing. Bankrupt does not mean their philosophy is lost. Bankrupt may be due to some other reason. That does not mean the capitalistic philosophy is finished.
Harikesa: Well, actually the communistic philosophy is strictly economic.
Prabhupada: Not actually. Don't say "actually." Sometimes you say "accidentally" and sometimes "actually." Such a rascal. (laughter) "By some chance" and sometimes "actually."
Hamsaduta: Marx's point was that the different systems, they would deteriorate one into the other, and eventually all these countries would have to... They would just evolve into that communistic way of life. That was his, his idea.
Prabhupada: No, no, then when there will be no capital, naturally they will be communistic. That's all. Nothing to eat...
Hamsaduta: So it's just some... It's not a philosophy but it's a position that one has to accept out of desperation.
Prabhupada: So that is described in the Bhagavatam, that they will be embarrassed with so many problems. That is not a communistic idea. That is the future of Kali-yuga. That is mentioned in the Bhagavatam. Achinna-dara-dravina gacchanti giri-kananam. They will be harassed by famine, taxation, and starvation. Naturally they will be disappointed. Achinna. That is already told.
Hamsaduta: Marx, he studied history from a given point and then he just calculated the consequences.
Prabhupada: No, that point is not new point. It is already stated five thousand years ago. So what credit he has got? If I say, "Now you are thirty-four years. At the end of hundred years you will die," is that discovery?
Hamsaduta: No. But that was...
Prabhupada: Everyone knows it. Everyone knows it.
Hamsaduta: But for this he's got so much credit because he said this.
Prabhupada: So he gets credit from the rascals and fools. That's all.
Harikesa: Actually, his philosophy is not something that can be put into action, but he's simply predicting what will be.
Prabhupada: That we can say also from our Bhagavata. That is not a very new thing. Those who are rascal, fools, for them it is new thing, and those who are student of Srimad-Bhagavatam, it is not new point.
Hamsaduta: I think Plato also predicted.
Harikesa: Yes.
Hamsaduta: We noticed this year at the book fair that they gave so many stands to the Communist publishers. There were at least ten or fifteen stands. And formerly they were not even allowed. They were not allowed. There was not a single one. Three years ago there was not a single stand which had Communist literature in the book fair, and this year there must have been fifteen.
Gopala Krsna: There's a worldwide trend towards communism today.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Gopala Krsna: There's a worldwide trend towards communism. In Europe, communism is becoming very strong. Italy has almost become communistic. Communist party has captured...
Krsna-caitanya: Portugal.
Gopala Krsna: Portugal, there's a struggle going on. Even in France the Communist party is very, very strong.
Prabhupada: Disappointment. Disappointment. People are becoming more and more poverty-stricken. This is the...
Hamsaduta: They are forced to accept it.
Prabhupada: The European economic problem is failure.
Gopala Krsna: Actually this oil crisis has been of great help to the Communists, because because of this oil crisis the world economy has fallen, and as people become frustrated, more and more people are turning towards communism.
Prabhupada: But what the Communist has done for the world benefit?
Harikesa: Well, it's a nice philosophy.
Prabhupada: In India there are many Communists, but the price of foodstuff increasing daily. What they can do?
Hamsaduta: Well, they say "If we were in power, this would not happen."
Prabhupada: So why don't you become in power? You are strong. And what they have done, those who are already in the power? There is no food. One has to give line for two hours to get foodstuff. I have seen in Moscow.
Ambarisa: They don't have any food. They have to buy from the United States.
Krsna-caitanya: Importing from India.
Prabhupada: Yes, importing India, America.
Krsna-caitanya: They don't have any bananas, mangoes, nothing.
Prabhupada: So this rascaldom is going on.
Hamsaduta: People are so foolish...
Prabhupada: And people here... In the Moscow I have seen, they have no choice. You have to take whatever government supplies.
Hamsaduta: There is no food in the market.
Prabhupada: If you want to eat something -- everyone has got desire -- you cannot get. You cannot get. There is no fruit; there is no flower.
Hamsaduta: When I was there, all we could find was some potatoes, some beets, and some cabbage. That's all. Nothing else.
Prabhupada: That's all, yes.
Devotee (3): Very poor country.
Harikesa: But also in Russia you can't grow many things. It's very cold.
Hamsaduta: But you can import.
Prabhupada: Therefore naturally they are condemned.
Harikesa: So when you put the communistic system somewhere where you can grow these things, it will be very nice.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Harikesa: You take that system and put it in a place where you can grow all these things. Then it will be nice.
Prabhupada: But if you bring communism, you will not be able to grow. You are condemned immediately. Nature will restrict supply. Which way?
Tejas: Left, Srila Prabhupada.
Harikesa: China is doing very nicely.
Prabhupada: Why not Russia?
Harikesa: Well, China has more facility to grow.
Prabhupada: Then what is the use of Russian philosophy if he has no facility?
Harikesa: Well, actually it's not Russian philosophy. Chinese philosophy. I just read a report from French reporters that went into China. They say China is growing...
Prabhupada: Then it is not accident. There must be some cause. Why do you say accident? Can you say "Accidentally Chinese are better situated"? Why don't you accidentally you become better situated? Then there must be controller.
Harikesa: Mao Tse Tung.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Harikesa: Mao Tse Tung.
Prabhupada: No, whatever it may be, if one is better situated and another is not, there must be some management above that.
Harikesa: They say their great nationalistic spirit is holding together the country. They have a great nationalistic spirit. They are very loyal.
Prabhupada: That spirit is there amongst the dogs. (laughter) That is not very great qualification. The dog has also: "Oh, yow! Why you have come here? Gow! Gow! Gow!" That is dog spirit. This dog is going peacefully. As soon as he will see another dog, immediately fight begin. Who is this (sic:) Coppernics?
Ambarisa: Copernicus. He was a scientist. Ancient... well, long time ago. He was the one that first said that...
Hamsaduta: He made a model of the universe, I think.
Prabhupada: What is that scientific?
Hamsaduta: He made a model of the universe.
Ambarisa: With the sun in the center. It was a revolutionary idea.
Prabhupada: Another rascal.
Harikesa: He used to sit on top of his roof and think.
Prabhupada: And fell down? (laughter) What is this?
Gopala Krsna: Another (Hindi) kalakendra.
Prabhupada: Again. All kalakendra, this kendra.
Gopala Krsna: There's so many next to our temple.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Gopala Krsna: Next to our temple there's so many kalakendras.
Krsna-caitanya: Kala has another meaning of "art."
Prabhupada: [break] ...people engage in academic kalakendra, and the price of rice is rising. No rice. Rice kala. "My dear kalakendra, can you supply me rice?" "No." (laughter)
Tejas: In Bombay, even if any businessman brings more than five kgs of rice, they will seize him. They search the baggage many times in the trains at the station.
Prabhupada: You see. This is the kalakendra.
Hamsaduta: There was a political cartoon that people were shouting for food to Indira Gandhi, and the minister was saying, "The people want food." And she said, "But tomorrow we're going to have television."
Prabhupada: Television. Kalakendra. [break] ...kalakendra? This big house.
Harikesa: Rabindra...
Prabhupada: Rabindranath. Oh, he is the foremost kala, Rabindranath Tagore. He has shown biggest kala to the people of India.
Devotee (1): Aurobindo kalakendra.
Prabhupada: Aurobindo kala.
Devotee (1): Very big. He spent a lot of money for that Victoria House.
Prabhupada: But nobody is coming there, here or there. They have big, big Rabindra kala and nobody is trying to taste it.
Gopala Krsna: When they have programs, a lot of people come.
Prabhupada: That... You make any dog dance; they will come. That is not... In the name of Rabindranath Tagore...
Harikesa: That may even be Rabindranath Tagore dancing.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Harikesa: When the dog is dancing, it may even be Rabindranath Tagore.
Prabhupada: Rabindranath became very popular on account of his introducing Maghmela, where young boys and girls could easily meet. Yes. (aside:) Jaya. Hare Krsna. Jaya.
Hamsaduta: Hare Krsna.
Tejas: Their current exhibition is "Women in the World."
Prabhupada: Yes. (laughs) Some exhibition is going on?
Tejas: It's "Women in the World."
Prabhupada: Oh. (laughter) What is that "Women in the World"?
Ambarisa: Sixteen-ounce brain, I think.
Gopala Krsna: They had a world conference of women in Mexico recently, where every country sent a delegation of women.
Prabhupada: To become man? (laughter)
Harikesa: Yes, nowadays we're doing that also.
Prabhupada: Oh. (laughter) So you become woman. [break] ...here. Kala, kala?
Tejas: Stones.
Prabhupada: Yes. Kala means craftsmanship. Why it is not here, lacking? No money. The kala cannot be shown without money. I never saw New Delhi in such nasty condition.
Tejas: It's deteriorating.
Prabhupada: Yes, very much deteriorating. It means finished. The kala is finished now. You see? Now, "Natural History." So many dead stone they have brought, and so costly building, and showing "natural history." This is going on, simply cheating and bluffing at the cost of poor man's blood. Against this principle the communist movement is good. There are so many buildings, but there is not a single building where spiritual culture is discussed, although it is the real basis of life. (aside:) Hare Krsna. [break] ...and not getting sufficient milk, their growth is checked. This is kalakendra.
Harikesa: They have powdered milk.
Prabhupada: That is simply cheating, powdered milk. It is white water, that's all. Powdered milk means white water. It has no value.
Hamsaduta: In Moscow too, Anand Shanti, he was telling. When we were there we wanted to buy milk, and they had milk in bottles, but he told me, he said, "This is not milk." He said "First they dehydrate it, make it to powder. Then they again add water and put it in the bottle, because in this way they can keep it a long time." So we couldn't find any real milk even in Moscow, the biggest city in the country.
Prabhupada: I think Moscow they have milk and butter.
Hamsaduta: At least when I was there we couldn't find any.
Prabhupada: Oh, then finished. All cows finished, cutting throat.
Hamsaduta: Butter they have, but it's not very good quality.
Prabhupada: Hm. Adulterate. I thought at least they have got little milk and butter, but that is also finished. [break]
Tejas: ...the milkman tries to bring the cow to the asrama, they arrest the milkman. They take his cow away from him. They don't even allow that they can bring the cow to the people any more. They seized. He lost one cow. He has to sneak the cow down the back alley so that they can bring some cow fodder in.
Prabhupada: [break] ...zation will collapse very soon, all over the world. It will collapse. Either you may bring this ism or that ism, this civilization will collapse. People will become mad, being harassed in so many ways. When one is harassed in so many problems, he commits suicide. So that position is coming.
Hamsaduta: Or he starts a war.
Prabhupada: Yes. When the government cannot adjust, they start a war. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Indian man (3): Prabhupada: ...can dance, and as soon as you say, "Chant Hare Krsna and dance," immediately they reject.Gopala Krsna: Stop. They spend hours and hours practicing how to learn to dance. They go through so much tapasya.
Indian man (1): In Mauritius on Diwali there was a very big festival the government arranged. There were more than forty thousand people, and they got one singer, Mukesh, from India, especially for that program. So when he was singing everybody was making noise. As soon as the Hare Krsna people went on the stage everybody become quiet. Everybody was clapping, they were telling.
Prabhupada: [break] Kalakendra. Here is kalakendra, there is kalakendra.
Gopala Krsna: This area is full of kalakendras.
Prabhupada: This corner is something American?
Tejas: This used to be the U.S.I.S. but now this is closed. This is another...
Gopala Krsna: This has become another kalakendra.
Tejas: This is also part of the Bharatiya kalakendra now. The U.S.I.S. used to be here, American information... [break]
Gopala Krsna: New Delhi is a very social city. There are a lot of kalakendras so there's a lot of active...
Prabhupada: No, because the government servant, they haven't got to earn money. It is father's property. They are getting money and balance time, kalakendra. And government servant means (Hindi)
Gopala Krsna: No work.
Prabhupada: No work. Especially in this country. Sixty percent of the government servants, they sleep. They do not do anything. I have seen it.
Gopala Krsna: They're reading papers or gossiping.
Prabhupada: Gossiping, that's all. And keeping the files thrown away. If you want some reference, it will take three months.
Tejas: That one devotee who was given brahmana initiation, he was working in the government. So previously he would just go in the morning, and sometimes he wouldn't even go. His section officer would go... One of them would go and punch in and the rest of the day... They have no work even. And then in the evening one has to cover the punch out. That's the only thing.
Harikesa: In the communistic system everybody works very hard.
Gopala Krsna: That's what they claim, but everything belongs to the state. Why should they work hard?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Ambarisa: They work very hard because they have a gun pointed at their head.
Prabhupada: Accha?
Gopala Krsna: Now the Russians are gradually trying to change to the American system in the sense that if a worker produces more, he is given some bonus. They are trying to give incentives to the workers so that they are tempted to work hard.
Prabhupada: But what they will do with the money?
Gopala Krsna: Just buy a little more vodka.
Ambarisa: Go on vacation.
Prabhupada: Then where is equality?
Ambarisa: That's why the Chinese and the Russians don't get along. The Chinese say that the Russians have diverted from Marxism.
Prabhupada: They will have to divert because both, either Chinese or Russian, these are all rascaldom. It is not perfect system.
Gopala Krsna: But the chairman of the Russian Communist Party, Mr. Brezhnev, he has about fifteen foreign cars. Each time a foreign dignitary goes, he gives him a special car. So everyone is supposed to be equal, but he is not equal. He has fifteen cars for himself. [break]
Prabhupada: ...clean city. [break] It is not the same New Delhi as five or ten years before. Huh?
Tejas: Yes.
Prabhupada: How long you are here?
Tejas: Five years, four and a half years.
Prabhupada: So what do you think?
Tejas: Everything is deteriorating.
Harikesa: Vrndavana is much cleaner than this, and they are supposed to be very poor.
Prabhupada: Because in Vrndavana there are less rascals and here it is full of rascals. That is the difference. Harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-gunah. Rascal means the nondevotees. They have no good qualification. Kuto: "Where is good qualification?" And "No, they are so civilized. They are educated." But the answer is, mano-rathena: "Whatever they may be, they are on the mental platform." Mano-rathenasati dhavato bahih: "Because they are on the mental platform, certainly they will hover over the external energy. Therefore they have no good qualification." Bahir-artha-maninah. Simply speculating on the external feature.
Ambarisa: Mental platform means speculation, mental platform.
Prabhupada: That's it. Mental platform means speculation.
Harikesa: Na sukham na param gatim.
Prabhupada: Param gatim. They do not take instruction from the sastra; therefore everything is failure.
Harikesa: Nobody seems very happy in Delhi.
Prabhupada: Neither in U.S.A. (laughter)
Gopala Krsna: No one is happy in the material world.
Ambarisa: In America there is much more violence than there is here.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Gopala Krsna: I read in the papers yesterday that the crime rate has gone up in United States.
Prabhupada: Yes. That must. If everyone is a criminal, so how the crime rate can decrease?
Harikesa: Everybody cheats as much as possible, on income tax and everything.
Gopala Krsna: Even President Nixon had cheated on his income tax return, but they caught him later on.
Prabhupada: No, it is not cheating. It is... The income tax department is a cheating department, so everyone tries to avoid this cheating department. That's it.
Ambarisa: Yes. People hire lawyers, very expensive lawyers, just to find loopholes in their tax statements.
Prabhupada: Yes. The cheating begins from the government. They are giving some paper and asking people, "Here is ten thousand dollars." This is cheating. "I promise to pay." But when the government is failure, where is the promise? Who pays? This is cheating.
Harikesa: During the Depression that happened. People lined up for miles. During the Depression in America people lined up for miles outside of the bank, and the bank couldn't give them any money. And even if they had money, it wouldn't buy anything.
Prabhupada: That's it.
Gopala Krsna: Previously the governments all over the world would guarantee that for behind every currency there was certain amount of gold.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Gopala Krsna: So if you went and gave that...
Prabhupada: Forty percent.
Gopala Krsna: But now it's no more. Now if you go with that currency the government won't give you gold. They've reduced the gold backing behind the currency now. Every day they're reducing because when they want money they just print more notes.
Prabhupada: And you cannot hold gold also. That is illegal. Somehow or other, even if you secure gold, you cannot keep it.
Gopala Krsna: There's that restriction in India, I think.
Ambarisa: Now in the United States you can buy gold. They made it legal.
Harikesa: But limited quantity.
Gopala Krsna: No.
Prabhupada: They do not believe in the transmigration of the soul and they are "Awake." Just see these rascals. They have no preliminary knowledge even, and they are writing books, Awake.
Gopala Krsna: They have a very big press in New York, Jehovah Witness, Brooklyn Bridge.
Harikesa: They say the world is going to end next year.
Prabhupada: Accha?
Harikesa: Then they also say if it doesn't end next year, that it's Biblically correct to say that it may end in three years after that.
Prabhupada: And then again seven years. Then again ten years. They are so awakened. So rascals.
Gopala Krsna: We can ask them to sell their press to us because the world is going to end.
Prabhupada: No, give us free.
Gopala Krsna: They have a huge press.
Hamsaduta: We can make a wager with them. If it doesn't end, then they have to surrender their press.
Prabhupada: How much they are in darkness, and they are making propaganda, "Awake." This is going on. Andha yathandhair upaniya... One blind man is awakening other blind men. [break] ...kalakendra.
Gopala Krsna: All of the kendras are supported by businessmen. They would much rather support a kalakendra rather than the temple because they think...
Prabhupada: Temple is useless now. You see, Nanda has spent so much money in that Kuruksetra, and not a single temple. You see?
Indian man (1): There is no temple in Kuruksetra where they are worshiping Krsna like we are worshiping. There is no temple.
Harikesa: The Gaudiya Math?
Indian man (1): Even they can't worship as we are worshiping.
Prabhupada: How they can worship? The worship is done by devotee. Unless you create devotee, where is the question of worshiping? Without devotee it is idol worship. There is no life. And without life, how can you pull on artificially? Apranasya hi dehasya mandanam loka-ranjanam. Which way I shall go?
Gopala Krsna: Go to the left or... Left. [break]
Harikesa: In the back of that Awake magazine there was one little article that said that this one teacher in one college was doing yoga. He locked himself up in his room and went into a yogic trance, and they finally broke into his room two days later and found him in the same position but dead. So then they say that because he was in yogic trance that his heart was going too slow to give sufficient blood to the body, so he died.
Prabhupada: So by yoga practice he died.
Harikesa: Yes, that's what they're saying.
Prabhupada: The result is he's died.
Ambarisa: My father, he read that article, and that's what he says to me. He says, "You do yoga and you'll end up like this man."
Prabhupada: These are government buildings. They are not properly maintained. The roads are not properly maintained. So New Delhi light is diminishing. And the shabby motor buses.
Gopala Krsna: These buses are also so old.
Prabhupada: Old and creating sound so much.
Tejas: They are losing several crores of rupees every year. One man told me that he rents buses to them, one of the men who came two, three days ago. So, he was telling before, he rents buses to the D.T.C., to the Delhi Transportation Corporation. He rents it to them for a rupee a kilometer and he makes about forty paisa. And even though they are getting it for a rupee a kilometer, they are still losing money on it. He is making profit and they are losing it. Because they sell the spare parts. They're so corrupt.
Prabhupada: Take away the...
Tejas: Yes, the workers there... There's about sixty percent of their buses only, running. Forty percent are disabled because they are always losing the parts somehow.
Prabhupada: Just see.
Gopala Krsna: Also, I know, in Delhi, what the people do is... A lot of people, they don't buy the ticket. They give the conductor half the money, and so he lets them go free.
Prabhupada: Just see. Then where the income? There is no income and there is loss.
Gopala Krsna: Not everyone does it, but students and a lot of young people do that.
Tejas: Students coerce them. They stop the buses. If the bus driver doesn't stop, they'll break the windows and then they all get on and they ride free. They were burning many buses.
Gopala Krsna: But this year, because of the emergency, everyone is behaving all right. They're scared to do anything.
Prabhupada: How by emergency you can make people honest?
Gopala Krsna: Yes.
Prabhupada: This house belongs to the (name withheld).
Tejas: This belongs to (name withheld)?
Prabhupada: Yes. He has got three, four houses like that, separate, I saw, and whole day-two hours here, two hours there, two hours there.
Tejas: He had seven wives.
Prabhupada: Seven?
Tejas: Seven.
Prabhupada: Just see.
Tejas: A house for each wife, I think.
Prabhupada: Another madman.
Tejas: All his children are avowed atheists.
Prabhupada: Means children are born by others. He feeds them. That's all. This is going on. [break] It is easily calculated that government will collapse very soon. They have made changes because they cannot manage.
Gopala Krsna: Also they try to change their image. They'll always...
Prabhupada: Eh?
Tejas: Every six months they've been changing the ministers.
Prabhupada: That means mismanagement. [break]
Gopala Krsna: They do this all over the world. They change... Like in America, President Ford just dropped the Defense Secretary just like that. So that created such a big controversy.
Hamsaduta: I read a very interesting article, and the theme was that once a month, every month at least, one government is now collapsing or being overthrown. That was the theme of the article.
Indian man (1): In U.P. they change the government after every two, three months. Yesterday also they make authorization to rule in U.P. from yesterday. They change the government like that after every few months.
Gopala Krsna: Now Dr. Channa Reddy must have become busy because when the presidents rule then the governor has to do some work. Otherwise in India the governors, they do no work.
Indian man (1): He takes instruction from president.
Hamsaduta: In America in the upcoming elections in 1976, one of the biggest candidates is a movie actor, Ronald Reagan. Yes.
Prabhupada: For presidentship?
Hamsaduta: For presidentship. And he stands a very good chance of winning.
Gopala Krsna: He's governor of California. [break] The movie stars are entering into politics now. [break]
Prabhupada: ...the government will be incompetent, the more the citizens will be exploited. Ultimately the citizens will suffer. Because they will want money and plunder the citizens, they will be disgusted. Achinna-dara-dravin gacchanti giri-kananam. [break]
Tejas: ...tax division, the clerks will come to the various businessmen after they make their first application, and they will tell them... First they will come to them. And immediately a businessman knows, so he gives him 500,000 rupees. And he will say, "Oh, thank you very much. I just came to see you. I wanted to tell you that if you say like this, you will save ten thousand, twenty thousand rupees. But don't say when you are there that I told you." (end)
