Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Prabhupada:

stambhayann atmanatmanam
yavat sattvam yatha-srutam
na sasaka samadhatum
mano madana-vepitam
 [SB 6.1.62]

So his mind became very much agitated, young man, and he is seeing in his front that another young man and woman embracing and kissing. It is very difficult to restrain. Unless one is very advanced, it is not possible. That I was reciting, the verse by Yamunacarya, yadavadhi mama cettah padaravinde, krsna-padaravinde nava-nava-dhaman rantum asit, tadavadhi bata nari-angame bhavati sustu nisthi... Unless one is very strong in Krsna consciousness, it is very difficult to restrain the mind and the senses. It is very difficult. Here it is said, mana madana-vepitum. Madana means Cupid, or the lusty desires. So he was agitated. His mind was agitated by lusty desires. Therefore we have to be very careful for the association. Sangat sanjayate kamah. We develop different consciousness by particular association. Therefore, for advancing in Krsna consciousness, we must associate with the devotees. You cannot advance in Krsna consciousness without being in the association of devotees. Sri Narottama dasa Thakura says... (aside:) Tell them that Hindi will be in the evening. Tell them that Hindi will be evening. They are going away. Yes. Between half past seven to half past eight. So mano madana-vepitam. Cupid is always disturbing. This material world means this Madana, Cupid, whole material world. Yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham [SB 7.9.45]. Grhamedhi means those who have decided to prolong this body for sense enjoyment. That is going on. Everyone is trying so hard. In big, big cities they are working so hard like hogs and dogs, not for... They say that "We are hungry. We must work very hard." But that is not the fact. The real fact is that "We want to enjoy sex." So far hunger is concerned, you can control, but sex desire, it is very difficult to control.

So this material world means that maithunadi. Maithuna means sex intercourse. That is the beginning of material life. You know very well how strong is sex desire in the Western countries. Even old man, going to die, he has also. Although he cannot enjoy sex, still, he is trying his best by medicine, by other means, by intoxication, by stimulant. So that is the only happiness of this material world.

yan maithunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham
kanduyanena karayor iva duhkha-duhkham
trpyanti neha krpana bahu-duhkha-bhajah
kandutivan manasijam visaheta dhirah
 [SB 7.9.45]

The human civilization means to create the population dhira, not to be disturbed by sex impulse. This is human civilization, not that so many so-called sadhus and... They are now preaching openly the yoga by sex. Yoga by sex. They have invented. Yoga means to find out the Supreme Lord within one's self, within the core of the heart. That is real yoga. Yoga means to connect. To connect with whom? With sex life? No. The sex life connection is there even in the birds, beast, ants, animals, worms -- everywhere -- because the whole world is going on on sex life. Does it require any yoga system? But people are fallen so down that they have invented because people want it, and these rascals, they exploit. This is going on. So real yoga system means to control the senses, not to increase or indulge. They are clearly advertising in the Western countries, "Transcendental meditation. There is no restriction. There is no question of faith," and so many things, means as people want it. They want money, and they advertise like that. People do not want to follow the religious principles. People do not want any restriction. They advertise, "Yes. You haven't got to follow any restriction. You haven't got to believe in some religion. You simply pay me $127, and I give you mantra, and you become happy." This is going on.

But that is not the fact. Real fact is how to control the mind. Here we see that mana madana-vepitam. Na sasaka samadhatum mano madana-vepitam. Our mind is always agitated for sense enjoyment. Mind is the master of the senses, or the chief man, just like superintendent. Mind is dictating, and the senses The mind is dictating, "You go there"; immediately the legs go. "You see here"; the eyes see. So mind is the center. Manah-sasthanindriyani prakrti-sthani karsati [Bg. 15.7]. Bhagavad-gita. This living entity, mamaivamso Krsna says, "All these living entities, they are My part and parcel." So question may be, "Then why they are rotting here? If the living entities are part and parcel of Krsna, or God, so why does he not live with God?" The immediate answer is manah-sasthanindriyani prakrti-sthani karsati [Bg. 15.7]. These living entities, these conditioned souls who has come to this material world -- the only reason is that they want to satisfy the senses, manah-sasthanindriyani. Therefore there is struggle for existence. He wants to enjoy. He wants to become the enjoyer. But he is not enjoyer. That is called illusion. He is enjoyed. He cannot enjoy. Enjoyer is only Krsna, purusa. Purusah sasvatam.

In the Bhagavad-gita it is said, param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan, purusam sasvatam adyam [Bg. 10.12]. Krsna, the Lord, is described as purusa, and living entities are described as prakrti. Apareyam itas tu viddhi me prakrtim para, jiva-bhuto maha-baho yayedam dharyate jagat [Bg. 7.5]. Krsna has explained. There is material energy and spiritual energy. So jiva-bhuta. Jiva-bhuta, the living entities, they have been described as prakrti, and prakrti means females. And Krsna has been described as purusa. So purusa is the enjoyer, and prakrti is the enjoyed. Don't think that "enjoyed" means simply sex. No. "Enjoyed" means subordinate, to carry out the order of the purusa. This is the position of Krsna and ourself. We are part and parcel, just like the hands and legs are my part and parcel of the body. So the duty of the hands and legs are that carry out my order. I say my legs, "Carry me there." He will... It will do immediately. My hand -- "Just take it." I'll take it. The hand will take it. So this is prakrti and purusa. The purusa orders, and the prakrti performs the duty. This is the real..., not that as soon as we say prakrti and purusa, immediately there is question of sex. No. Means... Prakrti means obedient, obedient to the purusa. This is natural way. In the Western countries they are artificially trying to become equal, but that is not possible by nature. And there is no such question, inferiority or superiority. There is no such question. Such like the begin, in the beginning, yato va imani bhutani jayante. Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. Wherefrom this purusa and prakrti relationship begun? Janmady asya yatah. It has begun from the Absolute Truth. Therefore Absolute Truth is Radha-Krsna, the same purusa and prakrti. But Radharani is the servitor, serving. Radharani is so expert that She always attracts Krsna by Her service. This is Radharani's position. Krsna is called Madana-Mohana. Here in Vrndavana there is Madana-Mohana, and Radharani is called Madana-Mohana-Mohini. Krsna is so attractive that we are attracted by Cupid, and Krsna attracts Cupid. Therefore His name is Madana-Mohana. And Radharani is so great that She attracts Krsna. Therefore She is the greatest. In the Vrndavana, therefore, people are accustomed to chant Radharani's name more than Krsna's name -- "Jaya Radhe." Yes. If you want Krsna's favor, you just try to please Radharani. So this is the way.

Now here it is said, mana madana-vepitam: "Mind was agitated." So this mind agitation will go on unless one is attracted by Madana Mohana. If we do not be attracted by the Madana Mohana, so long we are not attracted by Madana Mohana we must be attracted by Madana, madana-vepitam. This is the process. And unless you can control your mind, unless you are able to control your mind not to be disturbed by Madana, there is no question of liberation or salvation. The ultimate goal of life is how to become free from this material engagement, repetition of birth, death, and threefold miseries. That is the perfection. They do not know what is the goal of life, what is the perfection of life, the whole world. Especially in this age they are so fallen that they do not know what is the goal of life. All these big, big political parties, philosophers, scientists, they have no knowledge. They are in the darkness. Therefore it is called illusion, in the darkness. But we understand that krsna surya sama: "Krsna is just like sun." Krsna surya-sama; maya andhakara: "And this darkness means maya."

krsna surya-sama; maya andhakara
yahan krsna, tahan nahi mayara adhikara
 [Cc. Madhya 22.31]

Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14]. This is the process.

So it is a great science. Krsna consciousness movement is most scientific movement to get the whole human society from the pitch of darkness. Grham andha-kupam. Grham andha-kupam. The Prahlada Maharaja was asked by his father, "What you have learned most...," I mean to say... I forget. Yes, "The best thing, what you have learned?" He said, hitvandha kupam, hitvatma-ghatam grham andha-kupam vanam gato yad dharim asrayeta [SB 7.5.5]. Tat sadhu manye asura-varya dehinam sada samudvigna-dhiyam asad-grahat. The same thing. Sada samudvigna-dhiyam asad-grahat. The materialistic persons, they are always in anxiety. Tat sadhu manye asura-varya dehinam. Dehinam means not only human society. Anyone who has accepted this material body, even a small ant, and a big, the demigods, Indra and Lord Brahma, such big, big They are also living entities, and the ant is also living entity. By their pious activities they have got big, big post as demigods, prolonged life and many other facilities. But they are all living entities. So these living entities means everyone has got a material body. Material body means it will end. Antavanta ime deha [Bg. 2.18]. In the Bhagavad-gita it is said. However strong you may be for one, antavanta ime deha, it will end. You cannot You may run in the morning three miles and then take very stimulative foodstuff, and Everyone is trying to become very strong. That is good, but however strong we may be, even Hiranyakasipu, it is not possible to stay here. Hiranyakasipu became very, very strong. He insured that he would not die in daytime, at nighttime, and in the water, in the land, on the sky, not by any human being, not by any demigods, not by any animal, not by any weapon. Everything he insured there. That's all right. But God's policy is so nice that, all his insurance keeping aside, He killed him not by weapon -- by the nails. He forgot this, that "I may be killed by the nails." Then he thought, "I shall not be killed by any animal or man." So Nrsimhadeva -- you cannot say it is lion or man-mixed. And he thought that he would not die in daytime or nighttime, but he was killed in the evening. It is neither day nor night. So he would not be killed in the sky, in the water or in the land, so he was killed on the threshold. Therefore we should always remember that we cannot cheat God. He is always at least little more intelligent.

So the conditioned soul, they want to cheat God. They want to deny God. They want to cheat God. That is not possible. In spite of all your insurance and cheating policy, you must have to die. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Mrtyuh aham, sarva-haram: "You do not accept Me. That's all right. You are collecting things for your enjoyment. But I shall... When I shall come as death, not only you shall be killed, but I shall take away whatever you possess." So this is intelligence, that... They say, "There is no God," and God says, "Yes, you see Me at the time of death." But you cannot avoid death. So before meeting death... Just like Hiranyakasipu. Prahlada Maharaja so many times requested, "My dear father, why you are becoming atheist? By His grace you have got so much power. Just submit to Him." "No. There is no God. I am God." So this is called demon. In spite of being punished in so many ways, they will deny the existence of God. So they are... Those who are not devotee, they will be agitated by the maya, by Madana, by Cupid, by so many other illusory things. But if one becomes Krsna conscious, then nothing can. Because Krsna conscious person is not in want. He is not in want. So long we will be in want, our mind will be agitated. Therefore Prahlada Maharaja advised that, sada samudvigna-dhiyam: "Those who are always agitated..." Everyone is agitated. Samudvigna. Tat sadhu manye asura-varya dehinam. Anyone who has accepted this material body must be always agitated in mind, sada. Why? Asad-grahat. Because he has accepted this temporary body, he must be full of anxiety. It cannot be avoided. Asad-grahat. Asato ma sad gama. The Vedic injunction is "Don't keep yourself in this temporary world or temporary body. Must go to the spiritual world, back to home, back to..." This is Vedic injunction. Sad gama. Asato ma sad gama. Asad-grahat. If you accept this temporary material world, means temporary body... Dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam... [Bg. 2.13]. We are transmigratng from one body to another. This is asad-grahat. Why I shall transmigrate if I am eternal? Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. I am eternal. So this is intelligence: "How I can get permanent body so that I may not have to change bodies one after another." This is intelligence.

So this person... There are many important words in this verse, and it can be explained for a long time. The one word is that stambhayann atmana atmanam. Just like a thief is going to steal. He also tries to control him: "I am going to steal. The after-effect will be that I will be arrested, and I will have to go to jail, and it is forbidden by sastra and human laws also, state laws. So I am going to steal. There is risk." Actually there is risk. But this consciousness beats him, but he cannot control. This is the position. He cannot control. He knows everything, but still, he steals. The same thing happened here. Here it is said, na sasaka samadhatum. He was a brahmana, learned brahmana. He knew that "I am being agitated by these sex desires. It is not good. It is not good." Yatha-srutam. Sruta. Sruta means Vedic knowledge. He had sufficient education in Vedic knowledge. Yatha-srutam and yavat sattvam, as far he could control... Stambhayann atmana atmanam. He tried to control the mind as far as intelligence concerned, but na sasaka -- he could not control. Na sasaka samadhatum. Why? The mind was too much agitated. This is the point. This is the point, that his mind was too much agitated, madana-vepitam, by lusty desire. Lusty desire is very strong. Therefore it is in the injunction of the sastra,

matra svasra duhitra va
naviviktasane vaset
balavan indriya-gramo
vidvamsam api karsati
 [SB 9.19.17]

That is vidvamsam api karsati. This Ajamila is a learned brahmana. He is vidvan. He is not a fool. But vidvamsam api karsati. Therefore it is forbidden, matra svasra duhitra va: "Don't keep yourself in a lonely place and talk 'pish pish' with woman, even she is mother, daughter, or sister." Strictly forbidden. That "pish pish" will kill you. Therefore it is forbidden that "Don't talk in solitary place with woman even she happens to be your daughter, your mother, and your sister." Generally one is not agitated in sex with mother, with sister, with daughter. But it is forbidden up to death. Even Brahma became agitated by seeing his daughter. There is instances. Even Brahma, and what to speak of others?

So mind is so susceptible that... But this mind can be controlled only by Krsna consciousness. Yoginam api sarvesam mad-gata anantaratmana [Bg. 6.47]. Mad-gata, thinking of Krsna, antaratmana, within the core of heart. Mad gata anantaratmna, sraddhavan bhajate yo mam sa me yuktatamo matah: "He is first-class yogi." So unless we can control the mind, we cannot become yogi. Yoga means indriya-samyamah. Yoga means not reducing fat or this or... No. Yoga means controlling the mind, controlling the senses, and concentrate it upon Visnu, Krsna. Mat para. Yogam yunjan mad-asrayah. That is yoga. When we take shelter of Krsna and practice yoga, then it will be successful, not that transcendental meditation, this, all foolish things. No. So we have to control the mind. If you want liberation from this material world, you have to control your mind. Therefore Ambarisa Maharaja, he showed us example that sa vai manah krsna padaravindayor vacamsi vaikuntha-gunanuvarnane [SB 9.4.18]. Simply engage your mind thinking of Krsna and talk of Krsna. Then this agitation will not disturb you.

Thank you very much. (end)

"Why Lament Over Chemicals"

73/08/29 Los Angeles, Bhagavad-gita 2.26-27

Devotee:

atha cainam nitya-jatam
nityam va manyase mrtam
tathapi tvam maha-baho
nainam socitum arhasi
[Bg. 2.26]

"If, however, you think that the soul is perpetually born and always dies, still you have no reason to lament, O mighty-armed."
Prabhupada:

atha cainam nitya-jatam
nityam va manyase mrtam
tathapi tvam maha-baho
nainam socitum arhasi
[Bg. 2.27]

So Krsna is putting forward the modern scientific view. The modern scientific view is that there is no soul. Life is generated from matter. By combination of material elements at a... Just like chemical combination. You mix acid and soda, alkaline and acid. There will be some reaction, effervescence, movement. Similarly, the Buddhist philosophy mostly, they do not believe in the existence of the soul. The Buddhist philosopher thinks that the combination of matter makes a living symptom. Their ultimate goal is nirvana. Nirvana means stop this combination. Due to this combination, we feel pains and pleasure. Therefore, if we disintegrate the combination, there will be no more pains and pleasure. Materialistic. Their solution, pains and pleasure, any philosophy or any religious system, ultimately aims at atyantika-duhkha-nivrtti. Duhkha means pain, and nivrtti, nivrtti means stop. Why people go to the church? Because they feel some pain, they go to church or temple to appeal, "If there is somebody as God..." They think like that. "Let me appeal to the Supreme Person so that my distress may be mitigated." So aim is atyantika-duhkha-nivrtti. We are also cultivating this Krsna consciousness. Our aim is also the same. Duhkha-nivrtti. Krsna says janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi-duhkha-dosanudarsanam [Bg. 13.9]. We keep always in view that in this material existence there are four kinds of miserable condition, primarily. To stop this. Duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15]. Everyone's aim is duhkha-nivrtti. It may be presented in a different way. So the Buddha philosophy is also duhkha-nivrtti, stop pains.

Anandamayo 'bhyasat (Vedanta-sutra 1.1.12), we are, by nature, we want blissfulness. But we do not know how to become actually happy and blissful. That is ignorance. In the material world, they also want to enjoy, everyone. They are thinking that this wine, woman, meat-eating, gambling, intoxication, these things will give me pleasure. So atyantika-duhkha-nivrtti. The Bhagavata says that atyantika-duhkha-nivrtti, means ultimate solution of miserable condition, is in the fact that we realize God and we go back to home, back to Godhead. This is our philosophy. And persons who cannot understand what is God, what is kingdom of God, they want to adjust. The aim is the same, atyantika-duhkha-nivrtti, ultimately solution of all miseries. In a different way. So Krsna says, putting forward the Buddha philosophy which was formerly known as lokayatikas and vaibhasikas... These two kinds of philosophers, they did not believe. Mostly the materialistic philosophers, they have no understanding of the soul. Therefore they have different kinds of theories which we do not accept. Krsna says that if you are not sanatanist or followers of the Vedic principles, if you think that your principle and views are different, that by combination of matter this existence coming, atha cainam nitya-jatam... Nityam means by combination of... Just like so many things are taking place by interaction of different material elements. Similarly, if you don't believe in this existence of the soul, if you think that there is no soul, the life is the result of combination of matter, nitya-jatam, and when this combination of matter is some way or other dismantled, then there is no more soul, it is finished. It began at a point by combination of matter, and it ends in a point by disintegration of matter. If you think like that, then also tathapi tvam maha-baho. Krsna is criticizing Arjuna, maha-bahu. Actually he is maha-bahu. Maha-bahu means mighty-armed. One who has got a very strong, mighty arm, he can fight very strongly. Then also, why should you give up your fighting spirit? Why should you lament for combination of chemicals and material elements. Suppose this house is a combination of material elements. So some way or other, if it is dismantled, who laments for it? No sane man will lament. Similarly, if you have no idea of the existence of soul, then also you do not require to lament. Tathapi tvam maha-baho nainam socitum arhasi.
Next verse:

jatasya hi dhruvo mrtyur
dhruvam janma mrtasya ca
tasmad apariharye 'rthe
na tvam socitum arhasi

"For one who has taken his birth, death is certain; and for one who is dead, birth is certain. Therefore, in the unavoidable discharge of your duty, you should not lament."

This is karma-vada. In the previous verse, Krsna tried to explain bauddha-vada, nastika-vada, atheism. Atheist means one who does not believe in the soul and God. These are correlative terms. If you understand what is soul, then you can understand what is God. If you understand what is God, then you can understand what is soul. But those who are agnostic, atheist, they neither believe in God nor in the soul. So combination of matter... Here Krsna says in a different way, that combination of matter is taking place and again it is being dismantled. That is going on. Either there is soul or not soul, just like Darwin's theory, evolution of material body. So that is going on. One body is created and the same body again annihilated, another body created, another body, the same body annihilated, and it is going on. So where is the cause of lamenting? You cannot stop. You cannot stop this process. Jatasya hi dhruvo mrtyur dhruvam janma mrtasya ca tasmad apariharye 'rthe. Duty. The same thing is going on. Duty is very important thing. Krsna is stressing on it. One cannot stop his duty. Then he becomes sinful. That is karma-vada. If, just like so many people, they argue that if we discharge our duties nicely, then where is the need of accepting God? The karma-vada philosophy is that if there is God, then he's giving us the result of our activities, and if I do nicely, then He gives me nice opportunity, and if I do not do things very nicely, I am put into suffering. So there is a karma-phala-datta, decides... Just like the high court judge, he is giving judgement according to the case, different cases. Similarly, our goodness or badness will be decided according to our karma. That is also fact. Then what is the use of accepting one God? If I do my duties very nicely, then He must give me nice result. Why shall I worship Him? Why shall I become a devotee of God? It is His duty. This is karma-vada. Everyone is trying to avoid the principle of devotional service. It is only we, the Krsna conscious persons, we are advocating the philosophy of Bhagavad-gita, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. Krsna says that "Always think of Me." These karma-vadis, they will say, "Why shall I waste my time thinking of Krsna? If I do my duty nicely then I will get good result. Why shall I be devotee of Krsna?" This is their argument.

One Arya-samaji postmaster, long ago, not very long ago, 1956, 1956... In Delhi at that time I was publishing this Back to Godhead. So we had concession rate for posting, and it was to be delivered to the postmaster. So the postmaster was talking with me about the paper, Back to Godhead. He raised the same question. He said, "If we do our duty nicely then what is the use of worshiping God? If we become honest, if we become moral, if we do not do anything which is harmful to anyone, in this way, if we act, then where is the...?" Because our paper's name was Back to Godhead. So he was indirectly protesting, that What is the use of propagating this philosophy of Godhead if we act nicely? The Arya-samajists view... They are called... There is a English name, what is called? I forget now. Moralists. The technical name there is. Anyway, this is their point of view, how to avoid God. So I replied that if one is not God conscious, he cannot be moralist, he cannot be truthful, he cannot be honest. This is our point of view. You study the whole world only on these three points, morality, honest, and dutiful. So many nice things are there. But if he's not God conscious, he cannot continue such thing. He must fail. Even the, there are so many instances, even amongst the devotees, because this material world is made so that you cannot continue this principle perpetually. That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita, you'll find. Because the three modes of material nature is working, even if you are on the platform of goodness, the other modes of material nature will try to attack you. And your goodness, morality, honesty, these things will be polluted by the onslaught of the other two inferior modes of nature. Therefore, sometimes we find that a very nice man committing some sinful activities.

So the decision of the Srimad-Bhagavatam is harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-gunah. Mahad-gunah. We can find it easily, just like we say that no illicit sex, no meat-eating, we consider this is sinful. But there are others, big, big leaders, politicians, philosophers, even religious priests, they do not think that this is immoral or this is sinful. Meat-eating is sinful. Why? What is the sin there? Illicit sex, what is the wrong there? Intoxication, what is wrong there? They do not find any immorality. So this standard of morality, there cannot be fixed up if one is not God conscious. There cannot be. Standard of morality, standard of goodness, cannot be. That is the decision of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-gunah. Lack of Krsna consciousness. They think that animal has no soul. They do not accept this morality that animal cannot be killed, it is sinful, it is immoral. They have created their own theory. So without being standardized by Krsna consciousness, or God consciousness, you cannot find the standard platform of morality, honesty. These things you cannot find. This is not possible. Therefore, the verdict of the Srimad-Bhagavatam is harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-gunah. Just like if you do not follow a standard law, how you can fix up "This is morality" or "This is honesty or dishonesty." There must be standard law. And who can give you the law unless he is the greatest authority? So law changes according to different countries, climate, situation. So man-made law cannot give you standard morality, honesty or... It is not possible. Because one will think "This is morality," another will think, "No, this is not morality." Same thing. Keep to the left, keep to the right. Somebody says "Keep to the left is right," somebody says "Keep to the left, it is wrong." Manorathenasati dhavato bahih [SB 5.18.12]. Because those who are not Krsna conscious, they are hovering on the mental plane. They cannot, there cannot be any fixed up morality, honesty, dishonesty. No. And rascals will also say yato mata tato patha. Means, whatever you think is all right, that is all right. According to you, your conception this is right, and according to my conception, both of them are right. How both of them can be right?

So this contradiction, opposing elements, will continue unless there is Krsna consciousness. So this is not a fact that the karma-vadis simply by discharging your duties nicely... This is... On principle, it is all right. But we must know what is actual morality. There are so many examples. Just like when there is war, to kill the enemies, that is morality. But in peaceful condition if you kill a person that is immorality or sinful. The process is the same, morality or immorality, the process is the same. But sometimes it is moral, sometimes immoral. So how it will be standardized? Therefore Bhagavata says dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. Real dharma, real religion, morality, honesty, they can be decided on the words of the Supreme Lord. That is the... When Krsna says "This is all right," then it is all right. When Krsna says it is not right, then it is not right. This is our decision. We Krsna conscious men, we simply accept. And that is a fact. That is a fact in this way because Krsna is the greatest authority, Supreme Being. Supreme means the greatest authority. Just like state says "Now it is wartime. If you kill a number of enemies then you will be awarded with gold medal." The same process of killing. But at another time, when there is no war, if you kill one person you'll be hanged. The killing process is the same, but the judgement is given by the greatest authority, the government. "This is all right, this is not right." Therefore, standard of morality means to abide by the orders of the greatest authority. That is standard of morality. This is the conclusion. You cannot make your own morality. No. If Krsna says "This is all right," then it is all right. Otherwise, it is not.

Krsna says patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati [Bg. 9.26]. "If somebody offers Me vegetables, leaves, grains, milk, water, flowers, then I accept." So this is nice foodstuff, it is to be accepted. Because Krsna likes to eat this. Krsna can eat anything because He is the supreme, He is omnipotent, He can eat anything, but He particularly mentions this. Therefore, foodstuff made of these ingredients is nice, sattvika, goodness. So the karma-vada, that you follow morality you'll get good results... But where is your morality? Because you are disobedient to God. In the beginning of your life, you are immoral. You are disobeying the greatest authority. There is another example, a story, that a gang of thieves, they stolen some property from different houses, then out of the village they are dividing amongst themselves the booties. So one thief is saying, "Please divide it morally so that one may not be cheated." Now just imagine, the property is stolen. Where is the morality there? But when dividing, they are thinking of morality. The basic principle is immoral. Where you can have morality? Similarly, according to Vedic injunction, isavasyam idam sarvam [Iso mantra 1]. Everything belongs to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. It is His property. So the whole planet is God's property, whole universe is God's property. But when we are claiming that this is my property, then where is morality? If you claim other's property as your property, then where is the morality?

So in this material world, such kind of morality, honesty, is going on. But our morality is if Krsna is satisfied, then it is honesty, morality, everything. There are many examples. Just like Prahlada Maharaja. Prahlada Maharaja is standing and his father is being killed by Nrsimhadeva in his presence. So do you think it is morality that one's father is being killed in the presence of his son, and the son without protest is seeing, with a garland, that "As soon as my father is killed, I shall offer this garland to Nrsimhadeva"? Is it morality? From material point of view? We are worshiping... Prahlada Maharaja has become mahajana, the greatest authority in devotional service, but if we study his morality that he did not protest the killing of his father, rather he was waiting with a garland, that "As soon as the killing business is finished I'll reward this." You see? Where is material morality, there is no morality.

The gopis, they were young girls, wife of somebody, sister of somebody, daughter of somebody, but when Krsna was playing on His flute at dead of night, they gave up all their engagement and began to run, "Where Krsna is present?" So from Vedic standard of view, this is immorality. They are going to another young boy and leaving family. Even somebody, some of the gopis, they left their sons also, and went to Krsna. From material point of view this is immoral. So you'll find in such a way that what is from material point of view immoral, it is the most magnificent morality in relationship with Krsna. And similarly, from material point of view, what is moral, that is most, I mean to say, abominable from the point of view... Just like Yudhisthira Maharaja. Yudhisthira Maharaja became very moral. Krsna advised him, "Just go and tell Dronacarya that ‘Your son is dead,' " although his son was not dead. Because Dronacarya will not die unless he hears the news of the death of his son. He'll not die. So he would not believe anyone, but Yudhisthira Maharaja is famous, very moral. So Krsna asked him that "You go, otherwise he'll not believe anyone." So Yudhisthira Maharaja hesitated, "How can I say lies?" So for this he had to see hell. He became immoral. Man-nimitte krtam papam punyaya eva kalpate.

So our standard of morality and immorality is to see whether Krsna is satisfied. If Krsna is satisfied, then it is morality. If Krsna is dissatisfied, then it is immoral. And Krsna's representative also. Therefore, it is said yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasado yasyaprasadan na gatih kuto 'pi **. Our morality is to satisfy Krsna or His representative, guru. Yasya prasada. If he's satisfied, then it is moral. If he's not satisfied, then it is immoral. Na gatih kuto 'pi. So this karma-vada, that you act nicely and you'll get nice result, that is all right, but there may be some mistakes. There are so many instances. One very great charitable king, he was giving in charity so many cows to the brahmanas. So there was some mistake, and for that purpose, although he was all throughout his whole life he was giving in charity, a little mistake, he became a big lizard in the well. Therefore the conclusion is that this material morality has no value. Spiritual morality. Spiritual morality means to abide by the order of Krsna. That is morality. Whatever Krsna says, if we accept, samsiddhir hari-tosanam. Many places.

atah pumbhir dvija-srestha
varnasrama-vibhagasah
svanusthitasya dharmasya
samsiddhir hari-tosanam
[SB 1.2.13]

In many places. Svanusthitasya dharmasya samsiddhir hari-tosanam. In another place, that, if you execute your morality principles but if by executing such morality principle you do not, I mean to say, awaken your Krsna consciousness, it is simply waste of time. Wherever you go, the Bhagavata conclusion, harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-gunah. We have to keep in point of view that to become... Krsna also says in Bhagavad-gita: api cet su-duracaro bhajate mam ananya-bhak sadhur eva sa mantavyah [Bg. 9.30]. Even one is found su-duracarah, not very strictly following moral principles, but he is an unflinching devotee of Krsna, he's sadhu. These things are there. Therefore the point should be that we should not accept this karma-vada or the bauddha-vada or Mayavada, there are so many vadas. We shall simply take krsna-vada. Simply, simply accept Krsna. And whatever He orders, whatever He likes, for His satisfaction, we shall do anything and everything. That is our morality.

Thank you very much. (end)
