Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: ...perception. That is experience. Why do you give on seeing only? By seeing one mango you cannot understand what quality it is, but you have to touch with your tongue. Therefore in chemical laboratory the characteristics are there: "This is the color. This is the taste. This is the reaction." So you have to gather experience like that, not by simply seeing. That... I gave the example. Now you take one egg. What is there? Some white and some yellow substance. So you make one egg with white and yellow and bring life. So what is the power of your seeing? A small egg. Take a small egg. The covering, some celluloid, within, some white substance, some yellow substance. Or make further analysis and give some chemicals of the same taste, same color, same characteristic -- now bring life. But the same thing. You put under the feather of the chicken. Within five days it will bring life. So what is the credit of these rascal doctors, D.H.C.? That a small chicken is better than these D.H.C. Why don't you see practically?Gargamuni: The chicken is simply sitting, and he is...
Prabhupada: He is bringing life. What is the answer of these rascal scientists?
Satsvarupa: No good answer. Bluff.
Prabhupada: Challenge them like this, that "First of all do it. You are less than the chicken. Why you are claiming so much honor? We treat you, you are fig. You are less important than the chicken. Prove that you have got some power; then claim that you are scientist." Hm? Is that argument all right? What will be the counterargument?
Gurukrpa: A sane man would accept.
Prabhupada: They're all rascals. They do not know anything; still, they are claiming very high position.
Gurukrpa: I heard one scientist on the airplane. There were three scientists sitting behind me, and they were speaking that they hope they are living in the year 2000. One man said, "I become so excited when I think how advanced we will be in the year 2000 that I just hope I do not die before then 'cause I want to see how everything will be then."
Satsvarupa: By then they think they will be doing this, creating life.
Prabhupada: That any insane man can say. Any crazy man can say. "Trust no future, however pleasant." "You are rascal. You are believing in the future. You have not show us, because in the past you could not do. There is no history. In the present you cannot do. So how shall I believe that in future you'll do?" So any rascal promises like that, so we take him as a rascal. That's all.
Satsvarupa: What about our promise, in the future also, that you go to Krsna in the future?
Prabhupada: We have got proof. Krsna says. We believe in Krsna. You believe in some rascal; we believe in Krsna. That is the difference. Krsna says, tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti [Bg. 4.9]. So we believe that. That's all. We have got evidence. You have no evidence. You are simply suggesting in future you'll do. But we have got evidence.
Gargamuni: Sometimes they ask, "Show us somebody who's come."
Prabhupada: Hm?
Gargamuni: "Show us someone who has come from there."
Prabhupada: Many.
Gargamuni: "But we don't find any."
Prabhupada: Many. It is in the sastra. "He was formerly like this, and now he has become this." There are many.
Gargamuni: Well, that's in the sastra. They say now we want...
Prabhupada: But sastra is the proof. Our proof is sastra. Your proof is your sastra. Did you go to the moon planet or you believe the newspapers? Have you gone?
Gargamuni: No.
Prabhupada: Then if you can believe newspaper, why shall not believe in the Veda, Vedanta?
Gargamuni: No, but one man has come.
Prabhupada: So one man... You have not done. You have no experience. So one man you believe authority.
Gurukrpa: But we saw the television. They showed on the television.
Prabhupada: No. Television could not show that. You can arrange in the laboratory such television, cheat others. And you have done it. But anyway, television or man or newspaper -- you believe on others. You have not personally gone. So you believe some authority. We believe some authority. What is the difference. You take newspaper as authority. We take Vedic literature as authority. Where is the difference? You have personally not gone. How do you believe? The difference is that you believe somebody, we believe somebody. I asked this question to Professor Kotovsky, that "You believe Lenin; we believe Krsna. Then where is the difference between philosophy?" Now it is to be judged whether Lenin is all right or Krsna is all right. That is another thing. But the principle is there. "You believe in Lenin; we believe in Krsna. The process is the same. So where is your improvement?"
Satsvarupa: They say that theirs can be shown not just to a disciple but to the whole world in general, not just...
Prabhupada: Nobody believes in Lenin. Then there would have been everyone Communist. You believe, a section. Then why there are two parties? You are not all in all. That is going on everywhere. How you can say that you are correct, I am not correct? The process is the same. Therefore Vivekananda has compromised, "Everyone is correct." Yato mata tato patha. There is no quarrel.
Gurukrpa: Then they accuse us of being fanatical.
Prabhupada: You are also fanatical. Why do you believe Lenin? You are fanatical in our eyes. You are worse than fanatical because we have got great other authorities -- they believe Krsna is God. You have created a section recently, but we have got evidences from thousands and thousands of years ago, authorities believing Krsna. Our literatures are very old. Your literature recently made.
Gargamuni: Sometimes, though, they may agree philosophically about Krsna, but then they will bring in Krsna's controversial personal life. They always do this.
Prabhupada: Personal life?
Gargamuni: They bring in about, always about the gopis and Krsna.
Gurukrpa: They just did that recently in Honolulu.
Gargamuni: Philosophically they may agree. But then they will go and attack Krsna's...
Gurukrpa: Character.
Gargamuni: His character.
Prabhupada: But that... Because...
Gargamuni: Even in India they do. They say, "Rama, He was better."
Prabhupada: But what do you know about Rama and Krsna? You do not know anything. You are not a devotee. You have to learn the science. Manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati [Bg. 7.3]. You are ordinary man. You cannot understand. Then one can criticize his father and mother also, that "My fa..." They do. Some rascal do that. Kim anyat kama-haitukam. "My father has done harm to me. By lusty desire he gave me birth, and I am suffering." They say like that. So you can in that way, you criticize your father and mother. But that is not law. Law is father and mother should be respected. But you rascal, you can criticize your father. You are such a rascal.
Gargamuni: 'Cause in India that happens a lot. Especially...
Prabhupada: No, then father, mother, should not be respected, because they indulged in sexual life and brought me into existence and I am suffering. Then there should be no respect of father and mother. And then this sex life should be stopped, and there is no need of big, big scientist, philosopher. Because this indulgence will bring so many big men, so it should be stopped. But Krsna is the father. Why He should not have sex? Any father has got sex. So if you criticize Krsna, then you must criticize your father first. But that is not the law of nature nor the law of the society. Law is different. Who will criticize his father? Any sane man? Will any sane man do that? So you are insane. So who is caring for your remark? You are insane.
Hari-sauri: They're just envious of Krsna, anyway. They're envious because they want to enjoy.
Prabhupada: That is the cause, that they're criticizing. They're envious.
Gargamuni: Oh, yes.
Prabhupada: That's all. The envious man can say anything.
Gargamuni: That I notice when they say that. I can notice their envy.
Prabhupada: But still Krsna is being worshiped. Here is Jagannatha, Krsna. Millions of people have come to worship. You are rascal. You may criticize. It doesn't affect Krsna's respectful position.
Gargamuni: Caitanya Mahaprabhu, although Krsna's life may have been controversial, still, He was very strict sannyasi.
Prabhupada: He never criticized Krsna. Rather, He was enjoying Krsna's love with gopis.
Gurukrpa: Ramya kascid upasana varga...(?)
Prabhupada: So we have to follow Caitanya Mahaprabhu, not you.
Satsvarupa: And Sukadeva Gosvami.
Prabhupada: Yes. You do not know what is Krsna. That is the... Krsna must have everything. Otherwise how He is God? God's definition is that everything is emanating from Krsna. Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. He's God, the original source of anything. Anything and everything. Then He's God. So if sex life is not in Krsna, then wherefrom it comes? Does it drop from the sky? You rascal, you do not know the science.
Hari-sauri: And with Krsna's sex there's no inebrieties.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Hari-sauri: When Krsna has sex life there's no inebrieties. There's no abortion and contraception. With his sex life there's so many bad things.
Prabhupada: No, first of all, wherefrom the sex life comes if it is not in God? You make God impotent. But we do not make. Why He should be impotent? Then He's imperfect. If He's not potent, then He's imperfect, and God is all-perfect.
Satsvarupa: They take it that this is an example of anthropomorphic, that we are saying...
Prabhupada: Whatever it may be.
Satsvarupa: "God has sex."
Prabhupada: They are luscious(?) that... [break] Just like a tuberculosis patient. To him doctor says that "You don't have sex life. That will bring your death." Does it mean sex life is bad? The tuberculosis person, for him it is bad, not for the sane man, not for the healthy man. So when sex life is advised to..., forbidden, that is for the diseased condition. But who is never diseased -- he is perfect -- for him there is no forbidding of sex life. So you do not understand that in this material condition you are suffering only. You have no brain. Therefore morality, immorality, good, bad, there are so many things. But when one is perfect, healthy, for him all the activities of life is perfect. Just like a physician advised me, "You don't take salt." Does it mean salt is bad? I am in a particular condition of this kidney trouble or liver trouble. For me salt is bad. But does it mean salt bad?
Gurukrpa: No. It's very good.
Prabhupada: Similarly, sex life for you is bad, not for Krsna. You are thinking Krsna like you, mudha.
Gargamuni: Yes. They try to equate themselves.
Gurukrpa: Sex-monger
Prabhupada: Yes. You are taking Krsna on your level. You are such a rascal. You do not know Krsna. Therefore Krsna says, manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddh... [Bg. 7.3], yatatam api siddhanam kascid. You do not know what is Krsna. You are taking Him on your level. Therefore you are trying to criticize Him. You do not know what is Krsna. That is your ignorance. What is food for one is poison for others. So for you it is poison, not for Krsna. Krsna is God. He has everything. He can use everything. That is God. He is not restricted by anyone. Mattah parataram nanyat [Bg. 7.7]. Who can restrict Him? Then He's not God. If by a third-class man like you He's restricted of His sex life, then He's not God. He becomes under your control. But Krsna is isvarah paramah krsnah [Bs. 5.1]. He's the supreme controller. How He can be controlled by your so-called goodness and badness? So the conclusion is you do not know Krsna. You want to bring Krsna in your level of understanding, and that is your foolishness. So we don't care for the fools like you. This is our conclusion. Avajananti... That is replied. Avajananti mam mudhah: [Bg. 9.11] "Rascals, fools, they criticize Me, thinks Me that I am as good as human being." Manusim janma. Param bhavam ajanantah: "The rascals do not know what is My actual position." So you have to preach in that way.
Gargamuni: I have found sometimes when going to the offices that these people, these businessmen in India, they have become so offensive because they always try to attack Krsna's activities more than anybody else.
Prabhupada: Yes. Otherwise where is the need of preaching? If you expect everyone is in favor of Krsna, then where is the need of pushing on Krsna consciousness?
Gargamuni: In the West we can discuss philosophy with people. They never try to attack Krsna's...
Gurukrpa: Now they are attacking, because they have gotten your books. (Prabhupada laughs) Even the Christians, they have read your books. And they are saying, "Well, Krsna did this. Krsna did that."
Prabhupada: He must do it because He's God. You do not... You have no conception. You explain that if there is no such things, then wherefrom it has come? God is the origin. In the Bible also it is said, "God said 'Let there be creation.' " So in the creation there are so many things. So therefore everything comes from God. That is Vedanta philosophy. Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. So why do you say, "Your God is like this"? God has everything. Otherwise how He's God? There is no meaning of God if He is deficient in something. But you do not know.
Satsvarupa: They say He should be exemplary. God should be exemplary.
Prabhupada: No. God is not bound to prove His example character to you. You are a rascal.
Satsvarupa: Then how will I know what to follow?
Prabhupada: You learn! You come to me. I'll teach you and beat you with shoes and teach you. (laughter) Come to me. Why I am here? You come! I shall beat you with shoes and teach you. Then you'll learn. You require some beating with shoes. You are a bad student. So I'll do that. "Come on." Yes, I keep always my shoes for my bad students.
Gurukrpa: You can beat me, Srila Prabhupada. I'd like that.
Prabhupada: (laughs) Yes. A student who is more chastised is advanced. Guru more murkha dekhi' karila sasana [Cc. Adi 7.71]. Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "My spiritual master saw Me a grand fool. Therefore he has chastised Me." That is the position. The more we remain a grand fool, then more we may advance in spiritual consciousness. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says. Guru more murkha dekhi' karila sasana. He was murkha?
Satsvarupa: Srila Prabhupada, one thing they're doing against us more and more in the West is taking the testimony of an ex-disciple of yours, and he will say, "I was a Hare Krsna..."
Prabhupada: "Because he is rascal, therefore he's 'ex,' excommunicated. My Guru Maharaja kicked him out, so what is the value of his word?"
Gargamuni: We can say these men were excommunicated.
Prabhupada: Ex means he's executed. That's all. He's finished.
Satsvarupa: Why listen to his testimony? We can say, "Why listen to his testimony?"
Prabhupada: Yes. Why not take our testimony? We are... Now take.
Gargamuni: Even in the church they do that. If some priest is not following or introduces something new, they are excommunicated. So we have excommunicated him. Why he should be listened to?
Prabhupada: He's no more in this.
Gargamuni: That's legal. In the church they do that. Why we cannot do?
Prabhupada: That is natural. Somebody will go out and speak against us.
Satsvarupa: The demons are very eager to hear. "Oh, tell us what they did to you."
Prabhupada: (laughs) "That is not your business. You better ask because you have taken him as authority. You have already taken him as authority, the excommunicated member. So you ask him." These things will happen. In preaching, you cannot expect very smooth path going. Otherwise what is the use of preaching?
Hari-sauri: That's been going on for a long time.
Prabhupada: Yes, yes.
Hari-sauri: Even their own religion started like that. Jesus's..., one of his best disciples turned him in.
Gurukrpa: Actually they are helping us to become Krsna conscious by giving us an opportunity to preach about Krsna.
Gargamuni: It makes us serve with great..., more enthusiasm, even the demons.
Prabhupada: That is the way of electricity. Electricity. Some thunder. That is electricity. The word is used, apratihata. Pratihata means checking. When your devotional service will make progress in spite of checking, that is pure devotion. Ahaituky apratihata yayatma suprasidati. And that is pure devotion. I was attacked by heart attack thrice. While on the ship, twice.
Gargamuni: On the ship twice? Oh.
Prabhupada: Consecutively two days, attack. Actually I would have died on the ship before reaching your country. I could not understand that was heart attack. The pain was so severe, I thought, "I am now dying." And it was done two nights. And I was very much afraid whether on the third night, that "If this night also again some pain like that comes, then I'll die." But third night did not pain. It was suspended. It came in New York. And you know it, left side was paralyzed.
Gargamuni: Yes. Left side. We had to massage constantly.
Prabhupada: No, they were arranging for some operation.
Gargamuni: Yes. Those doctors.
Prabhupada: I told Kirtanananda, "Give me massage."
Gargamuni: I can remember. I wheeled you down for test.
Prabhupada: The heart was also very painful still.
Gargamuni: They wanted to take some blood, and I had to stop them.
Prabhupada: They were examining my brain. Then I thought, "I must go away." I told, "Doctor, I am all right. I can go."
Gargamuni: They wanted to do so many tests. They wanted to take also from spine.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Satsvarupa: They did that. They did give you that spine needle.
Prabhupada: Oh. Never call doctor. Never give me hospital. Let me die peacefully if I am in trouble.
Gargamuni: Tirtha Maharaja had many doctors.
Prabhupada: He has suffered too much. When I was in Los Angeles after coming back from India, in that black quarter, do you remember? No.
Gargamuni: Black order?
Prabhupada: Black quarter.
Gargamuni: Oh. That was on West Pico Boulevard? That storefront?
Prabhupada: Our temple was...
Gargamuni: West Pico Boulevard, right. I know that place. Yes. I was there. Yes, right, when you came back.
Prabhupada: Before our La Cienega...
Gargamuni: Yes. It was in the black quarter. I can remember.
Prabhupada: I was continuing my disease up to there.
Gargamuni: And you had one house near?
Prabhupada: Many houses. I was not sleeping at night, and there was some sound, "gongongongon," in my ear. So long the body will be there, there will be so many troubles. And Krsna has advised that "They will come and go. Don't care for them. That's all." Agamapayino 'nityas tams titiksasva bharata.
matra-sparsas tu kaunteya
sitosna-sukha-duhkha-dah
agamapayino 'nityas
tams titiksasva bharata
 [Bg. 2.14]
So bodily, mental, by enemies, so many impediments will come. What can be done? We have to tolerate. That is material world. We cannot expect smooth, very happy. That is not possible. Krsna advising Arjuna, what to speak of us. What we are in comparison to Arjuna. He's His personal friend, talking with Him. He said, tams titiksasva. Krsna never said, "I have made some magic. You'll have no failure," like that. Tams titiksasva. "You just try to tolerate." That's all. He never gave him any tablet. (chuckling) He taught that... So we have to do that. As the modern gurus says that "I'll give you some ash. There will be no trouble," Krsna did He so? He said, "No, tolerate." That's all. He could have said, "I'll give you some ash." "You are ass; I'll give you some ash." (laughter) Neither Arjuna asked also, that "Why You are asking me to fight? Give me some ash. I'll throw." He was not such a fool that he asked some magic from Krsna and kill his enemies. Actually he fought. This is Bhagavad-gita. So face things as they are and depend on Krsna. That is our duty. We must go on with our duty. Don't expect any ash, miracle, magic. So what is...? You have got sleeping place?
Gargamuni: Well, we have the beach. No, we have two rooms. Until seven o'clock in the morning we can use these two rooms. So our men can stay. Some will sleep in the van. I will sleep in the van.
Prabhupada: In some car? In the car? In the car? In my car?
Gargamuni: No, no. No one is sleeping there.
Prabhupada: No, no. Then why not sleep, someone, some two?
Gargamuni: No, it's not very... It's not long enough. We are big.
Gurukrpa: We have enough place without.
Gargamuni: In the summer here we park... You know where I took you on the other side? We brought our vans there and we slept right on the sand. Very nice.
Prabhupada: Beach. Very nice. Summer it is nice.
Gargamuni: Nice breeze all night.
Prabhupada: Very nice sleep.
Gargamuni: Yes. Fresh. Right? You were there.
Gurukrpa: Yes. I was there.
Devotee: We slept outside, under the stars. We cooked out there. We cooked outside.
Prabhupada: In villages eighty percent, ninety percent people, they sleep outside during summer.
Gargamuni: But here there's no... There was no mosquitoes.
Prabhupada: Because the wind is strong.
Gargamuni: Yes. Very strong. And just a light cadara. A light cadara and that's all.
Prabhupada: Yes. In village also. In summer, night is rather pleasant.
Gargamuni: Yes. Because there is breeze. Chandigarh we were there and Saharanpur. We were sleeping...
Prabhupada: You can sleep very comfortably in summer. And in the morning you'll feel fresh, refreshed, complete.
Gurukrpa: I am sleeping comfortable any place.
Prabhupada: Yes, that depends on practice.
Gurukrpa: An expert in sleep.
Prabhupada: Anything. Sarira na mahasaya, ya saha mithaya saha (?) There is a Bengali proverb that the body is very nice. If you practice something, it will tolerate. Jaya. (devotees offer obeisances) [break] And whatever plan he's making, it will be all frustrated. That is the whole history. Big, big emperor, big, big politicians, they have tried. Roman Empire, the Carthagian Empire, Greece Empire, Egyptian Empire, and Mogul Empire, British Empire -- all frustrated. It will never be successful. For a few days, hundred, two hundred years or five hundred years, it may go on. So real plan is how to become Krsna conscious. Then everything is successful. Ahankara-vimudhatma kartaham iti manyate [Bg. 3.27]. These rascals, on account of false prestigious position, trying to be happy without God... That is not possible. Throughout the history you study. So many rascals have tried. The Napoleon, the Hitler, the Gandhi, this, that. What they have achieved? Nothing. If we honestly study their lives and activities, what they have achieved? Hm? Do you think they have achieved anything?
Satsvarupa: No.
Prabhupada: They simply wasted their time. Srama eva hi kevalam [SB 1.2.8]. Simply wasting time. Therefore this is the best service, to revive Krsna consciousness for the human society and send them back home, back to Godhead. This is the best service.
Gargamuni: And if anybody helps us, then he is also greatly benefited.
Prabhupada: He is also... He becomes recognized by the master. "Oh, he is trying for this, what I want." Naturally he becomes immediately recognized, although he has no qualification. If he tries. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu... Yare dekha tare kaha 'krsna'-upadesa: [Cc. Madhya 7.128] "You become guru. No qualification required. Simply you repeat what Krsna has said." Just see how simplified. Don't talk anything nonsense. Yare dekha tare kaha 'krsna'-bas. So who cannot do it? Anyone can do it, even a child. (laughs) Our Syamasundara's daughter. She was preaching, "Do you know Krsna?" They said, "No I have got no..." "The Supreme Personality." This is preaching, simply if you say that "Krsna is the Supreme Personality, supreme controller. Just be obedient to Him." Where is the difficulty? Anyone can preach. Chant Hare Krsna. Bas. Three words: Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead; surrender unto Him; and chant Hare Krsna. Your life will be successful. What is the difficulty in preaching these three words? Hm? Is there any difficulty? Even a child like Sarasvati, she can preach. Then what to speak of others? Those who are educated, grown-up, advanced, they can put the matter more nicely, more convincingly, more philosophically. That is another thing. But these three words, that "Krsna is the Supreme Lord; you are servant; and chant Hare Krsna" -- bas, preaching complete. Very simple thing and the sublime instruction. Everyone can become guru by simply teaching these three words. Not sophisticated, but he must also understand not blindly. Bharata-bhumite haila manusya-janma yara, janma sarthaka kari [Cc. Adi 9.41]'. He must also understand these three words perfectly. Then wherever he speaks, he'll be successful. Not that "For you I am speaking. I can do everything independently." No. I am also servant of Krsna. Realized. This is realization.
Satsvarupa: How does a preacher realize? How does a preacher come to realize?
Prabhupada: He must know that he's servant.
Satsvarupa: By hearing.
Prabhupada: By practically knowing he's a... Are you independent, anyone? Everyone is servant. He's serving his senses. That's all. He's servant. He's never master. But he has become the servant of maya or senses. That's all. He has to change only; instead of becoming servant of maya, be servant of Krsna. Servant he is. Where he'll go? How he will become master? To remain a servant is his position. He cannot become master. That is false pride. As soon as he wants to be master, that is false pride. That is maya. "So if I am servant, then I have to serve. So why shall I serve the senses' dictation? I will serve Krsna, what He says." So he's self-realized immediately, within a second. Where is the difficulty to become self-realized? Hm? Is there any difficulty? He must know that "I am serving. I am never master. But serving the senses, that's all, whims of the senses in the name of independence." That is not possible. Very simple philosophy. One who understands, he's self-realized. And if he preaches, then he becomes recognized. On this principle we shall help everyone. "Come here. Stay with us nicely. Nicely you can. But serve Krsna. We take responsibility." Organize in this way throughout the whole world. Give them shelter; give them food; give them cloth. That is the most benevolent welfare activity in the human society. So here people have generally tendency to come to the beach to enjoy. "All right, we shall give you a place. Come on. Stay here. You haven't got to pay anything for food or lodging. Simply attend arati, classes. Then... For experiment, three days' period, you see."
Gargamuni: Anyone.
Prabhupada: Anyone.
Satsvarupa: Even those three days they have to attend the mangala-arati?
Prabhupada: Yes. Mangala-arati they must attend. It is not that sleeping, "gongongon," and taking free food, no.
Gargamuni: No. Even in Mayapura we wake them up at four.
Prabhupada: Yes, that must be. Why Mayapura? Vrndavana, they are accustomed. Ya devi sarva-bhutesu nidra... This sleeping is the maya's influence. It is stated in the... Ya devi sarva-bhutesu nidra-rupena samsthitah.(?) The Devi, this material energy, has captured everyone, and she is there... The more one sleeps, that means he's under the control of maya. And the more he is not sleeping, he's free from maya. Nidrahara-viharakadi-vijitau **. The Gosvamis, they conquered over three things: nidra, sleeping; ahara, eating; and mating. These things are the clutches of maya. More we have sex, more we have eating, more we have sleeping, that means I am entangled. The more we conquer over it, we are free. That we have to try. Whether I am in the clutches of maya or not can be tested -- whether I am sleeping more, whether I am eating more, whether I am more sexually inclined. He can test himself. And bhakti means vairagya-vidya, to conquer over these three things. So practice this. They are... To rise early in the morning and attend mangala-arati is compulsory. It is part of this education, spiritual education. And not to eat more than necessary. Then you'll not sleep more. You'll find, if you observe fast, you won't feel sleepy. Have you tested this?
Gargamuni: Yes. I can remember.
Prabhupada: Therefore ekadasi. One day or two days in the month he should practice fasting, and then he'll be able to conquer over these things. These are all practical. So we should practice ourself and teach others. This is Krsna consciousness movement. And if he thinks that he's quite all right in this material atmosphere, then he's doomed. Mudhah nabhijanati. That means aprapya mam -- without achieving Krsna -- nivartante -- again he goes back-mrtyu-samsara-vartmani [Bg. 9.3] -- the cycle of birth and death. Take one birth, suffer, again take another body, again take another body, another body. There are 400..., eight million four hundred... That's all. Sometimes so-called happiness, he is born as demigod, sometimes as dog, sometimes as insect, sometimes as tree. What is this business? "I am eternal. Why shall I suffer this?" This is sense. They are simply trying how to become a hog, how to become a dog, or how to become a god. God you cannot become. You may have some partial happiness just like the demigods. They have got power. They have got high standard of living. But that does not mean the solution of the problem. Solution of problem means no more birth, no more death. That is solution. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti [Bg. 4.9]. That is solution. And if he remains in the birth-and-death cycle, that is not solution of material problem. Who can understand this science? They have accepted birth and death. But birth they do not believe. They think accidentally it grows within the womb, a lump of matter, and at a certain stage there is life. This is their... Do they not think like that?
Satsvarupa: Oh, yes.
Prabhupada: Fetus. By sex there is some reaction of flesh and blood and something comes out.
Gargamuni: Chemical reaction.
Prabhupada: So poor fund of knowledge. Accident? Kim anyat kama-haitukam. "A man and woman becomes lusty, they have sex, and it, the body, the form, comes out. So you can cut it and then eat it." Very horrible condition of the human civilization. It is the only institution throughout the whole world who are trying to deliver people from this ignorance. We are the only. All bogus. They do not know anything, what is religion, what is happiness, what is spiritual life. Nobody knows. No... But that was covered. Now we are opening religion. The thing was there. It is not our invention, neither we can invent. But it is still unknown, and therefore they are unhappy. Their primary problem, where to live, how to eat, how to cover -- that we shall take charge. Then what is the problem? You have got free boarding, free lodging, free cloth, and so much enlightenment. What do you want more?
Satsvarupa: Some people don't like to live in the community.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Satsvarupa: Some people, they don't want to join...
Prabhupada: Community, if you don't, you independently live. But this is the principle.
Satsvarupa: Yes. They can do that in their house. They can live in their house and do all that.
Prabhupada: Wherever you live, this is the principle.
Gargamuni: There are many people who are doing that.
Prabhupada: Yes, why not?
Gargamuni: They are offering their food, they have...
Prabhupada: There is no question. Community means to help one another. If you can help yourself, do it.
Satsvarupa: But at least meet with us for training, for classes.
Prabhupada: Yes. This is training. Community means I learn from you; you learn from the principles. But if you don't like community, you do it yourself. But this is opportunity. You learn it. Sadhu-sanga [Cc. Madhya 22.83]. By association of... And we must be sadhus. If we are also dogs and hogs, what they will learn?
Gargamuni: Ramesvara told me that in ISKCON mail order there are many people outside who are following. They are offering their food, having kirtanas.
Prabhupada: Yes. No, you can accept a suitable situation according to your convenience. There is brahmacari, grhastha, vanaprastha, sannyasa. Four orders are there. Whichever is suitable for you, accept. But don't forget the problem and the aim of life. And we don't want men giving some quotation from a book just like these so-called scholars do. He has not gone through the book, but take some suitable passage and note, and then he advertises himself that he has studied so many book. "Bibliography." Is it not? So-called scholar?
Satsvarupa: Footnotes, bibliography.
Prabhupada: Footnote scholar they are now.
Satsvarupa: One professor, I showed him your book. He said, "This is not a scholarly book. It has no footnotes." His definition. Simply looked for the footnotes.
Gargamuni: I met one professor in Lucknow University. For his own self he purchased all of your books. And I asked him, "Can you help us to meet more professors in Lucknow University who also can take?" He said, "They are all debauch."
Prabhupada: Yes.
Gargamuni: "They are in the bar." He says they all go to the hotel. They get paid high salary. They go to the hotel, they drink and they have prostitute. He told me this.
Prabhupada: Just see.
Gargamuni: I said, "Just see." And these are so-called big professors.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Gargamuni: Authors of books. He said, "They will not purchase. But I think these are valuable. Therefore I am purchasing." He told me this.
Prabhupada: This is the fact.
Gargamuni: So all of these men are nonsense. But people accept their...
Prabhupada: So we have no business to print other books of Gosvami literature.
Satsvarupa: To cater to them.
Prabhupada: That is not required.
Gargamuni: They won't follow, anyway.
Prabhupada: These two books, Bhagavata and Bhagavad-gita, if they actually read and assimilate, their life will be successful. So we want to organize widespread publicity of these books. They'll be benefited.
Satsvarupa: I think one important principle in this individual book-selling will be a science to find out of all the masses people, the likelier people... (end)

By pleasing the spiritual master, you please Krsna.

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: prasadad bhagavat-prasadah. By pleasing the spiritual master, you please Krsna. That's nice. But why Krsna should be pleased? Why? What is the necessity of pleasing Krsna?Devotee (1): To please the representative of Krsna.
Prabhupada: No, no, that is all right. Guru is representative of Krsna, but why one should bother himself for pleasing Krsna? Answer this.
Devotee (1): 'Cause our real position is to serve Krsna, and because we've fallen in this illusion of the material energy, so we forgot our position.
Prabhupada: We shall do it otherwise. Why shall I please Krsna? We are making scientific progress. What is the use of bringing God?
Devotee (2): Because we shall never become perfect or see the answer.
Prabhupada: That is begging the question.
Indian man (3): For spreading the name of the Krsna, in the world.
Prabhupada: No, no. It is not the question of guru. Guru is doing all right. Why you should be so much anxious and feel obligation to please Krsna?
Indian (4): Everybody has to serve somebody, so Krsna is the reservoir of all pleasure and everything exists from Him. So instead of serving anybody, we should serve the Krsna.
Prabhupada: "That's all right. Without serving Krsna, I am getting pleasure by drinking wine. Why shall I...?"
Cyavana: That pleasure will not last. That pleasure is only temporary.
Prabhupada: "No, I will not also last. (laughter) that..."
Cyavana: But to accept such a mentality, we say that is third class. Actually our life is eternal.
Prabhupada: That is your statement, "third class," but my statement is "It is first class." (laughter)
Harikesa: Is it first class if every time you are going to eat something nice I was standing over you with a stick, and as soon as you took, I would beat you? So every time you have some enjoyment, there is some concurrent suffering. Like you enjoy the wine, but then you have a headache, hangover. You enjoy. Then you get sick.
Cyavana: Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita in the Tenth Chapter, He says, "For those who are constantly devoted and worship Me with love, I will give the understanding by which they can come to Me." So this is our desire.
Prabhupada: "I don't want to go."
Cyavana: You don't want to go to Krsna?
Prabhupada: "Yes."
Harikesa: All right, suffer. (laughter)
Prabhupada: "I don't suffer. (laughter) I am enjoying."
Harikesa: You are enjoying death and old age?
Prabhupada: "Yes, you are putting upon me some impression, 'suffering,' but I am enjoying."
Harikesa: Your knee is hurt. Is that enjoying?
Prabhupada: "That I am curing. That is also nice." (laughter)
Harikesa: But soon the whole thing will be finished. You will not... No one enjoys death. No one will take voluntarily a death pill.
Prabhupada: Nobody of you could answer the question. Now I give you again chance to answer this question very properly. Why one should be obliged to please Krsna? Why?
Harikesa: Just like this finger. Its position is to serve the body. Just like the stomach. Everyone may be jealous of the stomach and not want to feed the stomach, but if all the hands and the legs and the mouth went on strike not to feed the stomach...
Prabhupada: This is the right answer.
Harikesa: ...they would ultimately be destroyed.
Prabhupada: This is right answer, that you cannot non-cooperate with the stomach. You must serve the stomach. Otherwise your position is very precarious. That is the answer. If the finger thinks that "I shall remain independent and be happy," that is not possible. The stomach must be supplied food, and then all the parts of the body, they'll be happy. That is the point. So you cannot non-cooperate with the stomach. Similarly, Krsna is the central enjoyer. Bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram [Bg. 5.29]. He is the center. Just like ordinarily this African state, if you do not satisfy the state or the president, then you cannot remain happy. Independently you cannot be happy. We require in every step sta... We have come to this park because state is cooperating. In the morning we shall come, and they have prepared it nicely. We are not going to the jungle. So if we actually want happiness we must cooperate with the state. This is crude example. Similarly, if our ultimate aim is to become happy, then we must cooperate with Krsna. This is obligatory. You cannot escape it. Then you'll be unhappy. This is the... Stomach. Pranopaharac ca yathendriyanam. Therefore the natural process is you pick up... A child even. He picks up some something, but he does not put anywhere -- immediately in the mouth. Why he does not bring it in the ear? Why? The child immediately takes it. He does not know what is what. But the nature is that as soon as he captures something, even he does not know... Because his position is eating, he knows this much, sense gratification. Other senses are not yet developed. So the child, he knows taste with tongue and eats. That he knows. So immediately anything he captures, he brings to the mouth, naturally. He hasn't got to be educated. So our position is like that. We being part and parcel of Krsna, our natural tendency is to serve Krsna. Natural tendency. It is not artificial. When you forget Krsna, that is artificial. So our normal life means to love Krsna, to serve Krsna. That is our normal life. Without serving Krsna our life is abnormal, madman's life. Therefore Krsna says... When you forget Krsna, He comes to preach the normal life. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam [Bg. 18.66]. This is normal life. So Krsna does not require your help. He can create many helpers. But for your good Krsna comes, that "If you want normal, happy life, then surrender unto Me." This is the proposal. Therefore the whole Bhagavad-gita, all Vedic knowledge, is there. We have forgotten our position. Our posit..., normal position, is to love and serve Krsna. Therefore anadi bahir mukha jiva krsna bhuli gela ataeva krsna veda purana karila. Because we do not know... From time immemorial we cannot ascertain when this incidents have happened, to forget Krsna, but it is practically... Life after life, life after life, we are changing body, but forgetting Krsna. So here, in the human form of life, there is the opportunity to revive our original position, and we require the help of knowledge, perfect knowledge. And that is there in the Vedas. Atha eva krsna veda purana karila. If we don't take advantage, although we have got... We can read Bhagavad-gita, and if we don't take advantage of Bhagavad-gita and go on whimsically, then we'll suffer. You cannot non-cooperate with Krsna as you cannot non-cooperate with the stomach. This is the... You must. There is no question of alternative. You may, may not know. It is not. You must. This is the position. Otherwise you'll never be happy. And happiness is your aim of life. Atyantika-duhkha-nivrttih. We are... I'm suffering from this knee's trouble because I am in this material world. I have got this material body. So atyantika-duhkha-nivrttih means no more material world, no more material body. And for that purpose we have to cooperate with Krsna. Otherwise it is not possible. Any question about this? Just like these African women. They are going to work. There is no question of no work. They must. Otherwise they cannot eat. Anyone, if by working his livelihood is going on, how he can non-cooperate? This is not possible.
Brahmananda: The thief is also eating.
Prabhupada: That is Krsna's grace, just like the government gives the prisoners also to eat. But they are condemned. And government's grace that government provides all necessities. If a prisoner is sick, he is given the hospital facility. But he is restricted free movement, that much. Otherwise government gives the same facilities within the prison house and without the... The standard may be little different. Eko yo bahunam (yo) vidadhati kaman. He satis... Why this human being prisoner? Even He is giving food to the animals, to the birds, beasts, everyone. Noncooperation cannot be. Krsna says, bijo 'ham sarva-bhutanam [Bg 7.10]. Now, you have to grow trees, plants and vegetables for your eating. So that you cannot have without cooperation with Krsna. Krsna gives all the seeds. Bijo 'ham. You cannot manufacture the seed. He gives the seed. You work little, sow it and get the result. But without cooperation with Krsna, how can you get the seed? Then where is your food? No food. You must take... "God, give us our daily bread." Krsna gives the seeds, and you sow it and get the fruit or grains. Then you can exist. Even if you are animal-eater, the animal must also come from Krsna. You cannot manufacture the animal. That is also coming from Krsna. Bijo 'ham sarva-bhutanam [Bg 7.10]. The animal is produced by father and mother, but the seed is given in the semina by Krsna. And then animal is produced. So how you can non-cooperate Krsna? You have to cooperate. Otherwise... (man yelling in background) What is that? (laughter) Huh? They are criticizing us? No.
Brahmananda: He's imitating the birds.
Prabhupada: Oh. (laughter) Just like this tendency was exhibited by Krsna. In the forest the two brothers and other cowherds boys, they were also imitating. They were flying. The bird is flying; they were also flying like this. And coming to the monkey, coming to the peacock and imitating the..., like this. These are description in the Krsna book.
Brahmananda: But his imitating the bird means he will become a bird?
Prabhupada: Hm?
Brahmananda: This man's imitating the bird means that he will become a bird.
Prabhupada: Not necess... This is sporting. It will be decided what he is thinking at the time of death. That will become prominent.
Brahmananda: Is it by chance what you think of at the time of death or is...
Prabhupada: No.
Brahmananda: ...it dependent?
Prabhupada: It is dependent. Just like all of a sudden some idea come to us. That means we had contact with such idea. It is compared with... Just like there is a big pond. All of a sudden, you see, from within a bubble comes "phut!" There is no reason, but it comes. That means the thing is there within the pond, the situation. All of a sudden, without any time, it comes. They put this chance theory like this. But this is not chance. If... Because we are changing our life, so everything is recorded in the mind, dictaphone. So sometimes some idea which I had contact with many, many years ago, it comes. It comes. It is not chance. I had contact with such thing. All of a sudden, that idea comes. We shall go now.
Devotees: Hare Krsna.
Prabhupada: [break] ...I am in the car, they offer me.
Woman: Oh, all African, small boys.
Prabhupada: They understand this is good.
Devotee (1): Srila Prabhupada, I understand Krsna is the Personality of Godhead, and He is the one who create this material world. So my impression is Krsna, He didn't make this material world to be spiritual?
Prabhupada: It is spiritual as soon as you become a devotee, spiritual. We are living in the spiritual world. That I explained last night. So ultimately there is nothing material. Material means when you forget Krsna. That is material.
Devotee (1): My question, Prabhupada, was...
Prabhupada: There is no material. When you forget Krsna, that is material. Just like madness. Madness is not our natural position, but when your brain is deranged, then it is madness. Madness has no separate existence, but when our brain is not in order, there is madness. Similarly, there is nothing material, because everything has come from Krsna. The original source is Krsna. Aham sarvasya prabhavo mattah sarvam pravartate [Bg. 10.8]. So the material world, the so-called material world, has come from Krsna. So if it has come from Krsna how it is material? The cause and effect is the same, maybe differently manifested. Just like cotton, cotton made into thread, the shape has changed, but it is cotton. And from the cotton thread, you make cloth. The cloth is cotton. But if I say, "Cotton. Bring cotton," then you'll bring cotton, not this cloth. But the cloth is also cotton. Now understand? Cloth is nothing but cotton. But when I say "Bring cotton," you'll not bring a cloth. You'll bring cotton. So the Krsna is the sarva-karana-karanam [Bs. 5.1], cause of all effects. So all the effects are Krsna. But you have no such realization. When you understand that this place is Krsna's place, so you can worship Krsna, glorify Krsna. But if you don't realize that it is Krsna's, then you talk nonsense, madman. "This is American property," "It is African property," "It is this. It is that," so many madness. But the sastra says, isavasyam idam, everything Krsna's. And the materialists, they'll pro... "No. Why everything? It is my country. It is my place." That is material. Similarly, anything coming from Krsna -- Krsna is supreme spirit -- it is spiritual. The devotees, they understand that "This fruit has come from Krsna. The flower has come from Krsna. Therefore it must be offered to Krsna. It is for use." Otherwise how the fruit becomes spiritual? We take prasadam. How it becomes..., the same fruit? No. Because the Krsna consciousness is there, it is spiritual. It is spiritual, but it was not known. When one comes to Krsna consciousness, he understands that everything belongs to Krsna. Hari-sambhandhi vastunah. Everything has got relationship with Krsna. That's the fact. So if anything has got relationship with Krsna, so that is not material. We are going to a house, but it is said "temple." Why? Because there is relationship with Krsna. Otherwise where is the difference between the next house and our house? So Krsna consciousness means that everything is spiritual, but we do not accept it. We accepted something else. That is material.
Devotee (1): From all scriptures you instructed us in Srimad-Bhagavatam that we should not jump from book to book, but I am so much attached to them that I read every book. Would that stop me to understand the philosophy?
Prabhupada: Yes. By reading, you'll understand. Hm? What is that?
Brahmananda: He's asking that it states in part one of Srimad-Bhagavatam that one should not jump to the Tenth Canto without having read all the previous.
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes. Yes. Knowledge has got step. You are learning ABCD. How you can go to higher studies?
Brahmananda: But the prabhu is feeling that he likes to read all of your books and sometimes he reads one book and sometimes another book. Is that bad?
Prabhupada: No, that is not bad, but better go by step by step.
Devotees: Jaya. Haribol. (end)

Service To Man--Service To God

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Mr. Dwivedi: So I asked, "Vivekananda has said that 'Service of God... Service of humanity is service of God.' Do you think it is correct or it is incorrect?" He said, "This is correct." Then I said, "We are running educational institution. Whatever good or bad, leave that aside. But in our own little small way we are rendering little service to humanity. And..."Prabhupada: But I may interfere. The... In the Bhagavad-gita is there such statement, that "Service to humanity is service to God"? Is there any statement?
Mr. Dwivedi: Daridranam bhara kaunteya... (?) I think there is somewhere...
Prabhupada: There is no.
Mr. Dwivedi: But this particular I remember, daridranam bhara kaunteya...
Prabhupada: This is... This is wrong theory. Don't maintain this. This is a very wrong theory. Just like "Service to the leaves is service to the root." Is it not wrong? What do you think? Like a tree, so where the service should be given, to the root or to the leaf?
Mr. Dwivedi: The root.
Prabhupada: Then why do you say like that? And Krsna says openly, mam ekam saranam vraja. He doesn't even recommend to worship demigods. Kamais tais tair hrta-jnanah yajanty anya-devatah [Bg. 7.20]. So these are imagination, concoction. They are not authorized. Vivekananda advocated daridra-narayana-seva hundred years ago. So India is full of daridras. What Mothilal can do? What Vivekananda can do? This is all simply concoction. You cannot do anything.
prakrteh kriyamanani
gunaih karmani sarvasah
ahankara-vimudhatma
kartaham iti manyate
 [Bg. 3.27]
The nature's law will go on. You cannot make a poor man a rich man, unhappy man an happy man. That is not possible. Karanam guna-sango 'sya sad-asad-janma-yonisu [Bg. 13.22]. Can you make a hog eat halava instead of stool? Can you make? By nature's way it is going on. Ahankara-vimudhatma kartaham iti manyate [Bg. 3.27]. These are foolish person who concoct ideas. It is not possible. If you can do anything to the human society, induce him to become a Krsna devotee.
ya idam paramam guhyam
mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati
 [Bg 18.68]
 na ca tasman manusyesu
kascin me priya-krttamah
 [Bg. 18.69]
Krsna says. So Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam... [Bg. 18.66]. Teach people that "You take it." That is real benefit. Otherwise you cannot do anything. What you can do?
Indian man: The persons are the root.
Prabhupada: Yes! Root should be given water.
Tamala Krsna: He says, "Persons are the root."
Karttikeya: Person is the root.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Tamala Krsna: He says, "Persons are the root."
Prabhupada: No, Krsna is the root.
Karttikeya: Krsna is the root.
Prabhupada: Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. This is the Vedanta. Aham adir hi devanam [Bg 10.2], Krsna says. So devanam, Brahma, Visnu, Mahesvara, He is the origin of Brahma, Visnu, Mahesvara. The root is Krsna. Karanam... Sarva-karana-karanam [Bs. 5.1].
isvarah paramah krsnah
sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah
anadir adir govindah
sarva-karana-karanam
 [Bs. 5.1]
Root is Krsna.
Indian man: Origin.
Prabhupada: Origin, yes. Aham sarvasya prabhavo mat... [Bg. 10.8]. That is the difficulty. You do not read Bhagavad-gita. You quote Vivekananda. You quote another, another. But Krsna is God. That is the cause of misfortune of India. You don't accept Krsna as the authority. Everyone accepts, all the great sages formerly, Asita, Devala, Vyasa. Svayam caiva bravisi me. And at the present era, Ramanujacarya, Madhvacarya, Nimbarka, Caitanya -- all accept, krsnas tu bhagavan [SB 1.3.28]. You don't follow the acaryas, the authorities, Krsna. You bring something.
Karttikeya: Concoction.
Prabhupada: That is the misfortune. They have left the authority, real authority. They have accepted some foolish man as authority. And that is the misfortune. Therefore we are presenting Bhagavad-gita As It Is, the supreme authority. Mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya [Bg. 7.7]. Aham sarvasya prabhavo mattah sarvam pravartate [Bg. 10.8]. Why don't you take this? Distortion of our sastra, distortion of authority, and bringing something foolish, and you are following. Not... You cannot follow. That is not possible. It is not possible. But you are making some authorities. You trying to follow. Even if you follow... That, the same example, just like Vivekananda was advocating daridra-narayana. First of all this is a concocted word. How Narayana can be daridra? People have accepted. Narayana is daridra?
Mr. Dwivedi: No.
Prabhupada: Then how he manufactured this nonsense word? It is insulting. If I say, "Foolish Jetthi, President, rascal," so is it not insult? Similarly, if you say, daridra-narayana, it is insult to Narayana. But people are accepting daridra-narayana. Just see how they are misled.
Indian man: They have not even proper knowledge, sir.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Indian man: They have not even proper knowledge.
Prabhupada: No knowledge. All rascals.
Karttikeya: Not even proper. No knowledge.
Prabhupada: :That is he difficulty. Rascals have become leaders.
Karttikeya: And we follow them.
Indian man: And we have to, actually. It is...
Karttikeya: Not we have to. Here is a leader. Why don't you follow him?
Indian man: But when we get the... Fortunately then we can do so.
Karttikeya: No, fortune is given.
Indian man: Yes.
Karttikeya: He has been doing it for so long.
Indian man: Yes, yes.
Prabhupada: That is the misfortune of human society. The other thing...
Mr. Dwivedi: This also happens by good luck. As Ramayana says, vina hari-krpa na mile sat-sanga. (Hindi)
Karttikeya: No, that's not... You should not worry about a poor people then. You should worry about Krsna only. You should serve Him. You should become His devotee.
Prabhupada: There are... Poor people, so far concerned, that... Are we not taking care of the poor people? That is automatically taken. Who is poor? A man who is poor in knowledge, he is poor.
Mr. Dwivedi: Yes, correct. Yes.
Prabhupada: Otherwise nobody's poor.
Tamala Krsna: Americans are very rich from...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Tamala Krsna: ...material point of view.
Prabhupada: Poor means poor in knowledge. Otherwise even a small ants, it is not poor. It is eating. You are not giving food. In this room you'll find some hole. Hundreds and thousands of ants will come out. Are you giving him food? And you go to the jungle. Thousands of elephants are there. Are you giving them food? Why you are concerned about the poor? Who is poor? Poor means who has no knowledge. He is rascal. He is poor. Poor means poor in knowledge. Otherwise nobody is poor. Everyone is getting his food according to his karma. Karmana daiva-netrena jantur deha upapattaye [SB 3.31.1]. These are wrong theories. Wrong means because they are rascals, they are putting something rascal, idea. Mudhah nabhijanati mam ebhyah param avyayam, avyayam. Nityo nityanam ceta... This is Vedic version. Nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). (Hindi) We want to stop all this nonsense. That is our mission. Our Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is that "You become guru," as I was telling, "and teach, deliver persons where you are." If you say, "How can I become guru?" there is no difficulty. Simply repeat the words of Bhagavad-gita. That's all. You become guru. So our mission is to create real guru, not these jugglers. And real guru is he who speaks on behalf of Krsna. And that is wan... It is very simple. Do you accept or not? Boliye.
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi) (laughter)
Prabhupada: (Hindi) ...manufacturing word, narayana daridra. Laksmi-pati is daridra. Kitna gadha. (Hindi) ...without checking. (Hindi) (Hindi conversation) We want to reestablish this. This is our mission. Everything is there. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, yare dekha tare kaha krsna-upade... "You simply make your life successful by understanding Bhagavad-gita and preach this. You become guru." So where is the difficulty? Why don't you do that? Boliye. (Hindi) You quoted from Vivekananda, not from the Bhagavad-gita.
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi)
yat karosi yad asnasi
yaj juhosi dadasi yat
yat tapasyasi kaunteya
tat kurusva mad-arpanam
 [Bg. 9.27]
Prabhupada: This should be the... Take... Take Bhagavad-gita as the authority. Everything will be all right. (Hindi)
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi) ...founder. The first day I couldn't understand then... (Hindi)
Prabhupada: (Hindi) Everyone is isvara. (Hindi)
Karttikeya: He is jagad-guru.
Prabhupada: He is... Isvarah paramah krsnah sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah [Bs. 5.1], anadir adir... Anadi. (Hindi) You have got so exalted knowledge in India. You have kept it packed. And you are going to beg from others? Take this knowledge of Bhagavad-gita and assimilate it, make your life successful, and distribute it throughout the whole world. That I want. (Hindi) Knowledge, real knowledge, is in India. (Hindi) Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu said,
bharata-bhumite haila manusya-janma yara
janma sarthaka kari' kara para-upakara
 [Cc. Adi 9.41]
Indians, they are fortunate. They have got their birth in Bharatavarsa. The knowledge is here. So assimilate this knowledge. Make your life successful and distribute it to persons outside India. That is paropakara. That is real paropakara. That is real seva. But seva, no. It is daya. The seva cannot be used. Seva means offered to the superior. And to the inferior, if you want to do something, that is daya. There are words. Seva is only capable to accept, Krsna. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva sphuraty adah [Brs. 1.2.234]. These are... (Hindi)
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi)
Prabhupada: Seva-bhagavan accept, can accept.
ekale isvara krsna ara saba bhrtya
yare yaiche nacaya se taiche kare nrtya
 [Cc. Adi 5.142]
So master can accept service. So whenever there is devotional service, it is called bhagavata-seva. And jivera daya. (Hindi) If you have got something, then you can be merciful to others. If you have no knowledge, what you can do? The basic principle... (Hindi) In India, Bharatavarsa, exalted knowledge, and if it is presented properly, people will accept. They are accepting now, one man's effort. If many men are prepared to do this service, the whole world will be followers of Bhagavad-gita. (Hindi) [break] ... come to give here India's knowledge. In big meeting I told him that "I have not come here to beg. I have come here to give." Everyone goes from... Even the Prime Minister goes-beg. All beggars. And it is known as "beggars' nation." But you can be the giver nation. You have got so much potency. But we are not training people in that way. They are learning dog dancing. That's all. If we simply understand this one word, beginning of the Bhagavad-gita... There are so many students of Bhagavad-gita, but nobody understands Bhagavad-gita. The beginning is,
dehino 'smin yatha dehe
kaumaram yauvanam jara
tatha dehantara-praptir
dhiras tatra na muhyati
 [Bg. 2.13]
Is not there in the beginning?
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi)
Prabhupada: So if there is dehantara-prapti, then where is your so-called nationalism, socialism? They do not understand. Suppose if you are Indian today and dehantara-prapti, you become something else, then where is your nationalism? Boliye. For twenty years or, say, fifty years nationalism... When you become young man, thirty-forty years, then you begin. Suppose you live for hundred years. So fifty years' nationalism. Then if by chance you become a dog? (Hindi)
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi) ...vasudeva-kutumbakam...
Prabhupada: Vasudeva-kutumbakam all right because Krsna says,
sarva-yonisu kaunteya
murtayah sambhavanti yah
tasam brahma mahad-yonir
aham bija-pradah pita
 [Bg. 14.4]
If you understand Krsna, then kutumbakam. If you don't understand your father, where is kutumbaka? (Hindi) Kitna (Hindi) ...foolish idea. You do not recognize the father, and crying for brother. If you understand Krsna, then vasudeva-kutumbakam. If you do not understand, it is foolishness. Brahma-bhutah prasannatma na socati na kanksati [Bg. 18.54]. If you can understand your position as part and parcel of Krsna, Param Brahma... Krsna... Param brahma param dhama pavitram paramam bhavan [Bg. 10.12]. Everything in the Bhagavad-gita... If you understand that "I am part and parcel of Param Brahma. Aham brahmasmi. I am also Brahman," that is brahma-bhuta [SB 4.30.20]. Prasannatma na socati..., samah sarvesu bhutesu. Then you can claim this vasudeva... If you do not understand Krsna, it is all nonsense, simply slogan. Where is kutumbaka? Then where is nationalism? I have gone to preach in the foreign countries -- really on kutumbakam, not that "I am Indian. He is American. He is Englishman." Then there is no question of kutumbakam. And people are fighting on this plane. This vasudeva-kutumbakam... Then why you asked the Englishmen to go away, quit India? What do you say?
Mr. Dwivedi: Narrow nationalism.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Mr. Dwivedi: Narrow nationalism.
Prabhupada: If you... If you think kutumbakam. Suppose some kutumba has come to your house. You ask him, "Go out"? This is our system. Grhe satrum api praptam. This is Indian culture. When you receive somebody at your home, even if he's your enemy-grhe satrum api praptam -- you should treat with him in such a way that he'll forget that he's your enemy. Visvastam akutobhayam. That was India's culture. Bhima went to Jarasandha to fight. Whole day it was fight. It was ksatriya's fight. Unless one is dead, the fight will continue. So Bhima and Jarasandha were equally powerful, so no decision. But still, he was guest at Jarasandha's house. At night they were eating together, talking together. This is India's culture. They forgot. Arjuna went to see in the battlefield to Duryodhana. And Duryodhana immediately said, "Come here, my brother. You have come. What do you want? How can I help you? You want your kingdom without fight? I can give you." He said, "No, no, that is not my business." This is ksatriya. He... He thought that "He has come to beg." "No, no, that already... That we shall decide in the battlefield." This is ksatriya. But when he's at my place, I offer, "All right, if you want without fight, you can take." This is... They... This is India's culture. Ei sab mahabharata hai, "History of Greater India." (Hindi) Apkara Gandhiji (Hindi) fiction hai.
Mr. Dwivedi: Gandhi thought that the Mahabharata is within.
Prabhupada: (Hindi)
Mr. Dwivedi: "The Ramayana is within." That's what he says.
Prabhupada: And therefore... Therefore...
Mr. Dwivedi: He said, "Rama, nobody accepts..."
Prabhupada: ...Krsna... Krsna gave him within -- bullet. Yes. "Your nonviolence is within. You take it within. Take this bullet." Such wrong theory. These are wrong theories. "You want to establish nonviolence, and the violence is within. Take it." So don't theorize. Yah sastra-vidhim utsrjya vartate kama-karatah, na siddhim sa avapnoti [Bg. 16.23]. This is Gita's word. If you do not follow the sastra -- you manufacture ideas -- you'll never get success, na siddhim sa avapnoti na sukham, no happiness, and what to speak of param gatim? (Hindi) Tasmat sastra-vidhanoktam karyakarya... What is that verse? Real guidance, sastra, and Krsna is speaking. Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. It is very easy. But we have given up all these things. (Hindi) So you have to give up this. Otherwise there is no hope. [break] And to become Krsna conscious, it is not at all difficult. Very simple thing. Otherwise how they have become? Ten years before, they did not know who is Krsna. So how they have become Krsna conscious? And our position is that even a person like Gandhi, he could not become Krsna conscious in hundred years. Because the wrong way. And they have become within ten years fully Krsna conscious. Now ask him that "Go back to your Christian." Will they go? They have been kidnapped. They have been forced. In so many ways they have been harassed. No. In America it was going on. Their fathers... From parents' side they have been kidnapped, detoured by force that "You eat it, the mamsa. You eat." What is that girl who was kidnapped and she came to temple and married?
Tamala Krsna: That girl in Los Angeles?
Prabhupada: No, in New York.
Tamala Krsna: Oh, Murti-vandya. Murti-vandya.
Prabhupada: (Hindi) Now, how they have become Krsna conscious? And our men? They are dragged, somebody, to this conscious, that conscious, that conscious. Take this steady instruction of Bhagavad-gita. Try to implement. Everyone will be happy, everyone, undoubtedly. Take this seriously. It is not that, because we are pushing Krsna ... We are not pushing something new, manufactured. It is already there. It is already there. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. This is Krsna consciousness. So what do you think? Is it possible to push Krsna consciousness on this line, strictly on Bhagavad-gita? What do you think? It is not difficult, but we have made it difficult. Recently I had been to Vinoba Bhave's asrama. And there is no Krsna, and he is writing Bhagavad-gita pravacana or something like that. Even in Gandhi's asrama, Wardha(?), the Gandhi's lantern is being worshiped. And where is Krsna? So the Bhagavad-gita's instruction is mam ekam saranam vraja, and they are worshiping Gandhi's lantern. You had been with me?
Tamala Krsna: No, but I've seen it.
Prabhupada: You know, that so...
Tamala Krsna: Neither many people come there.
Karttikeya: Sevagram.
Prabhupada: Nobody.
Tamala Krsna: Krsna temples are still full.
Prabhupada: And it is very nice place. How it could be developed as a Krsna conscious center... But they have given up this idea. From externally... Now Vinoba Bhave is preaching Bhagavad-gita pravacana how many years?
Mr. Dwivedi: Nearly forty-fifty years.
Prabhupada: Fifty years. So what he has done? And within ten years what I have done?
Mr. Dwivedi: He has also put Gita with politics.
Prabhupada: Can I not say like that?
Mr. Dwivedi: You are... What you preach is unadulterated Gita. He mixes it with politics.
Prabhupada: That is my point.
Mr. Dwivedi: You put one principle,
man-mana bhava mad-bhakto
mad-yaji mam namaskuru
mam evaisyasi kaunteya...
 [Bg. 18.65]
Prabhupada: So what is beneficial, to preach Bhagavad-gita as it is or adulterate it? Which is good? That is my point. Why should you talk of Bhagavad-gita, adulterate? What is the benefit? And Krsna says, nastah. (aside:) Bring Bhagavad-gita. Krsna says, sa kaleneha mahata yogo nastah parantapa. Evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo... [Bg. 4.2]. You know that. Find out.
Tamala Krsna: Fourth Chapter.
Prabhupada: How to understand Bhagavad-gita? By the parampara. Sa kaleneha yogo nastah parantapa. (Hindi) The parampara-sutra says that... (Hindi)
Mr. Dwivedi: Third Chapter...
Tamala Krsna: Fourth Chapter.
evam parampara-praptam
imam rajarsayo viduh
sa kaleneha mahata
yogo nastah parantapa
 [Bg. 4.2]
Prabhupada: (Hindi) So what you will gain from nasta, bhrasta? (Hindi) We shall give pure. Then you see how your country becomes happy. That is real daya. (Hindi) Srama eva hi kevalam [SB 1.2.8]. (Hindi)
bhaktim udasya te vibhoh klisyanti
hi kevala-bodha-labdhaye
tesam klesala eva avasisyate
nanyat yatha sthulam tusavaghattainam
Bhagavad-gita is for bhakti. Bhakto 'si priyo 'si me rahasyam hy etad uttamam: [Bg. 4.3] "I am speaking to you..." When Krsna spoke to Arjuna Bhagavad-gita to understand, he was not a vedanti. He was not even a brahmana. He was not a sannyasi. So why he was selected? Bhakto 'si. Bhaktya mam abhijanati [Bg. 18.55]. Without becoming krsna-bhakta, what one will understand Bhagavad-gita? A politician cannot understand. His motive is different. He cannot understand. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji... Bhakta... How to become bhakta? Bhaktya mam abhijanati [Bg. 18.55]. Krsna says, "By bhakti one can understand." He never said, "By jnana, karma, yoga..." No. Yoginam api sarvesam mad-gata... [Bg. 6.47]. Eh? What is that? Antar-atmana, sraddhavan bhajate yo mam sa me yuktatamo... So if you want to organize on that line, then it will be successful. Otherwise it is waste of time. That is real cooperation, that we must accept Bhagavad-gita as it is and preach as it is. Then people will be happy. Otherwise waste of time. Srama eva hi kevalam [SB 1.2.8].
vasudeve bhagavati
bhakti-yogah prayojitah
janayaty asu vairagyam
jnanam ca yad ahaitukam
 [SB 1.2.7]
Now, that is wanted. (Hindi) Those who lead the seva-sanga, they must learn how to do benefit to the people. They must practically assimilate, apply in their practical life, and teach others. Then it will be successful. There is no doubt. And the proof is here. In our foreign countries, they are foreigners. They are practicing different religious systems. Now, why they are taking to Krsna con...? Millions of copies, Bhagavad-gita As It Is, we are selling. Krsna book, how many?
Tamala Krsna: Now about three and a half million copies, thirty-five lakhs copies.
Prabhupada: In Christmas festival they are performing Christmas festival and purchasing our book, Krsna book. Now they have accepted this Hare Krsna movement is three thousand years old or some thousands of...
Karttikeya: Five thousand.
Prabhupada: No, thousands of years.
Karttikeya: No, thousands of years.
Prabhupada: So do something -- the people will be benefited, actual. And the whole instruction is there. Then it will be success. Otherwise... Moghasa mogha-karmano mogha-jnana vicetasah [Bg. 9.12]. Find out this verse. Moghasah. (Hindi)
Tamala Krsna: Moghasa jnanam.
Prabhupada: Hm. (Hindi)
Tamala Krsna:
moghasa mogha-karmano
mogha-jnana vicetasah
raksasim asurim caiva
prakrtim mohinim sritah
 [Bg. 9.12]
Prabhupada: That's all. Raksasa. (Hindi) Learn the art, how to kill Krsna and read Bhagavad-gita. (Hindi) Moghasah, finished. (Hindi) Mogha-karmanah. (Hindi) Mogha-jnanah. Vicetasah. Why? Raksasa. (Hindi) Whether you are prepared to cooperate with me on this line? Are you ready?
Mr. Dwivedi: We also believe in unadulterated Gita, (laughs) unadulterated Gita.
Prabhupada: This is the line of action. (Hindi) Mam evaisyasi asamsayah [Bg. 18.65]. Asamsaya. (Hindi) Yad gatva na nivartante tad dhama paramam mama [Bg. 15.6].
mam upetya punar janma
duhkhalayam asasvatam
napnuvanti mahatmanah
samsiddhim paramam gatah
 [Bg. 8.15]
This is samsiddhi. If you want so -- that is another thing -- that, your samsiddhi, then you have to accept Bhagavad-gita as it is. Samyak siddhi, sampurna siddhi, samyak, samsiddhi. Find out this verse.
mam upetya punar janma
duhkhalayam asasvatam
napnuvanti mahatmanah
samsiddhim paramam gatah
 [Bg. 8.15]
(Hindi) So we have to give up this showbottle, that "I am a scholar of Bhagavad-gita. I am so..."
Tamala Krsna:
mam upetya punar janma
duhkhalayam asasvatam
napnuvanti mahatmanah
samsiddhim paramam gatah
 [Bg. 8.15]
Prabhupada: (Hindi) This is the definition of mahatma, not that I create mahatma. Mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah, bhajanty ananya-manasah [Bg. 9.13]. (Hindi) This is mahatma.
bahunam janmanam ante
jnanavan mam prapadyate
vasudevah sarvam iti
sa mahatma sudurlabhah
 [Bg. 7.19]
That is mahatma. Sa mahatma sudurlabhah. Vasudevah sarvam iti [Bg. 7.19]. The Mahatma Gandhi... (Hindi) Sa mahatma sudurlabhah. (Hindi) If you read Bhagavad-gita, you must read properly, act properly. Then you'll get the benefit. If you manufacture your ideas-useless waste of time. (Hindi) Whether they'll tolerate? Boliye.
Mr. Dwivedi: Hm?
Prabhupada: Whether they'll be able to digest?
Tamala Krsna: Bitter. Bitter medicine.
Prabhupada: Bitter pill.
Mr. Dwivedi: I think there is greater room for digestion of unadulterated Gita than for adulterated.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Mr. Dwivedi: And automatically, I do not know why, but I think they will believe it.
Prabhupada: No, they will not take it.
Mr. Dwivedi: They are... Already they are in a mood of...
Prabhupada: No, that...
Mr. Dwivedi: ...without much effort on anybody's part. I do not know why, whether it...
Prabhupada: No, that is everywhere. That is everywhere. Everywhere every Indian is Krsna conscious. By force we are making them otherwise. That is going on.
Mr. Dwivedi: So whatever... Atomic forces or whatever forces of saints like you, but they take it... There will be that air, that something is automatically coming up.
Prabhupada: (Hindi) If you agree to cooperate with me, you'll see immediately. Because I want to deliver the real thing, therefore in my feeble health I am prepared to go. If one man can understand, that I want to see. I am traveling all over the world to see that at least one man may understand. They have spoiled the whole situation by misinterpreting, by malinterpreting, and by bringing some rascal and pose as leader. The whole world is spoiled. If you want to preach some rascal philosophy, you do. Why you take Bhagavad-gita? That is cheating.
Mr. Dwivedi: If we can preach something genuine... This life is so small. What...? Why...? Why should we be after something which is adulterated? Why not preach genuine, if at all we preach?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Mr. Dwivedi: And for what purpose? Life itself is too short. For what purpose?
Prabhupada: (Hindi) "I preach something nonsense, and I take Bhagavad-gita." Why? Why you take Bhagavad-gita? You... There are so many rascal philosophers. You also preach your own philosophy. Why do you take Bhagavad-gita? And where is nonviolence in Bhagavad-gita?
Indian man: This, I think, they will be very active to know, I think.
Prabhupada: Yes. Where is nonviolence in Bhagavad-gita, in politics?
Karttikeya: Nowhere.
Prabhupada: No. Even that incidence I told you, the, Duryodhana said, "You have come to, for kingdom? Yes, you can take." So he said, "No, no, no. That we shall decide in the battlefield." This is ksatriya. "Oh, Duryodhana, you are so gentleman. Let us settle up. No, no, no." "No! That will be settled in the battlefield." This is Bhagavad-gita. (Hindi) "No, we have come to the battlefield. We must decide by fighting." This is ksatriya. Catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah [Bg. 4.13]. Yuddhe capy apalayanam. (Hindi) This is teaching of Bhagavad-gita. Yuddhe capy apalayanam. Then where this is nonviolence come in the Bhagavad-gita? Apalayanam. (Hindi) "Come on. Fight. You have no weapon? Take from me." This is ksatriya. What is the definition?
Tamala Krsna: Ksatriya?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Tamala Krsna:
sauryam tejo dhrtir daksyam
yuddhe capy apalayanam
danam isvara-bhavas ca
ksatram karma svabhava-jam
 [Bg. 18.43]
Prabhupada: Hm? Sauryam...?
Tamala Krsna: "Sauryam-heroism; tejah-power; dhrtih-determination; daksyam-resourcefulness; yuddhe capy apalayanam -- that he does not flee in the battlefield; danam-generosity; isvara-leadership." Those are the qualities.
Mr. Dwivedi: Somewhere Mahabharata or somewhere, Arjuna said, pratyaiva na denam napy apalayanam(?).
Prabhupada: (aside:) Get light on that. (Hindi) There was how many applications for five hundred posts?
Karttikeya: These fifty application... Fifty posts and five thousand applications, twenty-five thousand applications.
Prabhupada: No, no. There were some thousands applications. In education. (Hindi)
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi)
Prabhupada: Then sudra-karma. Paricaryatmakam karma sudra-karma svabhava-jam [Bg. 18.44]. (Hindi) So strictly if you follow Bhagavad-gita as it is, oh, then there will be heaven, everything. (Hindi) Kitna time waste... (Hindi) Jnanam vijnanam astikyam brahma-karma svabhava-jam [Bg. 18.42]. (Hindi) ...simple life... (Hindi)
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi) This I've seen that in our day it has been found first-class antiseptic. (Hindi) Particularly when we have got typhus and that sort of sicknesses in the home, it is the ground gobar that the house is cleaned and...
Prabhupada: (Hindi) This is very dangerous civilization. If you want to save them from this dangerous civilization, you must push on Krsna consciousness. Otherwise there is no other way. (Hindi) Dhiras tatra na muhyati [Bg. 2.13]. Dhira. (Hindi) Yato mata tato patha. (Hindi) Secular state. (Hindi) [break] (Hindi) Prayascitta-vimarsanam. (Hindi) Do you think they'll do?
Mr. Dwivedi: No, I don't.
Prabhupada: (Hindi)
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi)
Prabhupada: (Hindi) But
kecit kevalaya bhaktya
vasudeva-parayanah
agham dhunvanti karstnyena
niharam iva bhaskarah
 [SB 6.1.15]
Niharam iva bhaskarah. Nihara... (Hindi) (Hindi conversation continues for some time) That is this Krsna consciousness.
mam ca yo 'vyabhicarena
bhakti-yogena sevate
sa gunan samatityaitan
brahma-bhuyaya kalpate
 [Bg. 14.26]
brahma-bhutah prasannatma
na socati na kanksati
samah sarvesu bhutesu
mad-bhaktim labhate param
 [Bg. 18.54]
Bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi... [Bg. 18.55], tato mam tattvato jnatva visate tad-anantaram. (Hindi) So if you want, you can come also.
Karttikeya: No, I'll talk to Tamala Krsna. When are you going?
Tamala Krsna: Well, we're going to go tomorrow to book the tickets. We'll be going...
Karttikeya: After 6th.
Tamala Krsna: Yeah, on the... We'll be leaving on the 6th.
Prabhupada: Wait next day.
Tamala Krsna: No, well, we want to leave, I guess...
Prabhupada: Ah, Friday.
Tamala Krsna: Friday.
Karttikeya: You can take my ticket.
Tamala Krsna: We should get a ticket for you? Okay. Fine.
Karttikeya: It's a good opportunity for me to cure also.
Tamala Krsna: Oh, yeah?
Karttikeya: We are going to this Ananda(?) near Ahmedabad for five days near Srila Prabhupada. That was a very good reception there. So we can have the same type of... And we can see also with that, they have a good land and everything.
Prabhupada: (Hindi) Nature hai; you cannot change it. (Hindi) Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani [Bg. 3.27]. You cannot stop it. Yam yam vapi smaran loke tyajaty ante kalevaram [Bg. 8.6]. (Hindi)
urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha
madhye tisthanti rajasah
jaghanya-guna-vrtti-stha
adho gacchanti tamasah
 [Bg. 14.18]
(Hindi) You cannot check the activities of material nature. That is not possible. (Hindi) They do not know what the, how nature's law is working. And we are completely under the nature's law.
daivi hy esa gunamayi
mama maya duratyaya
mam eva ye prapadyante
mayam etam taranti te
 [Bg. 7.14]
(Hindi) We have got Hindi also. (Hindi) You are all young men. Do you think what I am speaking is right or wrong?
Mr. Dwivedi: Right.
Indian man (2): Right.
Prabhupada: Right? Thank you.
Mr. Dwivedi: When you told him yesterday, so he was interested to come today.
Prabhupada: Very good.
Mr. Dwivedi: In Gita he was interested.
Prabhupada: Very good.
Indian man (2): In Gita I am...
Prabhupada: (Hindi) Sva-vid-varaha-ustra-kharaih samstutah purusah pasuh. (Hindi) (Hindi conversation continues for some time) Brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra. (Hindi)
Mr. Dwivedi: But now everybody has become a sudra.
Prabhupada: (Hindi) (more Hindi conversation) So give him photograph, my photograph. Bring some photograph.
Mr. Dwivedi: All right. (Hindi) There are tentative date... (Hindi) So that can be fixed, that Your Holiness will be reaching there about the 6th.
Prabhupada: Yes. That letter...
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi) In that letter, whatever changes you want to make, make changes. Kindly put the date 6th, that His Grace should be reaching Gwalior on the 6th.
Prabhupada: Do... Otherwise call him.
Mr. Dwivedi: Or Pauri otherwise, Pauri on the 7th.
Prabhupada: Call him.
Mr. Dwivedi: Pauri on the 7th, morning.
Prabhupada: That's all right. (Hindi) So that letter...
Tamala Krsna: Is it required to give letter like that, Srila Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Tamala Krsna: I mean...
Prabhupada: And...
Tamala Krsna: That letter is... It's required to give him a letter like that?
Prabhupada: If he wants, give him a tentative date.
Mr. Dwivedi: You kindly give me one or two photographs.
Tamala Krsna: I don't have any photographs like that.
Mr. Dwivedi: You don't have.
Tamala Krsna: But you can get them. I can tell you the person to see who may have them, Amogha-lila. I can give you his name.
Prabhupada: So ask him, Amogha-lila. Why he shall go?
Tamala Krsna: Yeah, I... We have no photos.
Prabhupada: No, no, you have no; Amogha-lila has got.
Tamala Krsna: Yeah.
Prabhupada: So bring some. Give him.
Mr. Dwivedi: And then you arrange for that date, that His Grace will be reaching Pauri on the 7th.
Prabhupada: Tentative date.
Tamala Krsna: So when do you want the letter? Immediately? You want the letter immediately?
Mr. Dwivedi: Yes. Yes, you see, because I am leaving tomorrow. Before I go, I meet some press people. I will show them this letter. I say...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Mr. Dwivedi: ...on that basis, they'll begin to spread that news.
Prabhupada: (chants japa) If actually government follows Bhagavad-gita, then they should stop this cow slaughter immediately. Go-raksya. If you want to eat meat, there are so many other animals. But don't touch cow. What is this? Ten thousand cows are being killed every day. And you are preaching nonviolence. (chants japa)
Mr. Dwivedi: Then I may take that letter from Your Holi...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi)
Prabhupada: No, you are welcome always.
Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi) ...you have got to do.
Prabhupada: (Hindi) (chants japa) Jaya. Pranair arthair dhiya vaca. Gopinatha?
Upendra: Yes, Prabhupada. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: So you can send all these alcohol and drug patients here and they will be cured. These boys, American and European boys, they were all addicted to alcohol, drugs. Now they have given up. Practical.Guest (1): In what way would they cure?
Prabhupada: Simply I say that "If you want to be my student, then you must give up four things: illicit sex, meat-eating, intoxication, and gambling." This is my condition. So they give up, and they become my student.
Guest (2): Do they suffer withdrawal symptoms?
Paramahamsa: He says, "Do they suffer withdrawal symptoms?" Sometimes when a patient is giving up alcohol or drugs, he goes through various symptoms which are painful.
Prabhupada: Yes, yes. That should be... But unless... Find out this, param drstva nivartate. Rasa-varjam raso 'py asya param drstva nivartate [Bg. 9.59].
Devotee (2): "The embodied soul may be restricted from sense enjoyment, though the taste for sense objects remains. But, ceasing such engagements by experiencing a higher taste, he is fixed in consciousness."
Prabhupada: Purport.
Devotee (2): Purport? "Unless one is transcendentally situated, it is not possible to cease from sense enjoyment. The process of restriction from sense enjoyment by rules and regulations is something like restricting a diseased person from certain types of edibles. The patient, however, neither likes such restriction, nor loses his taste for edibles. Similarly, sense restriction by some spiritual process like astanga-yoga, in the matter of yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, etc., is recommended for less intelligent persons who have no better knowledge. But one who has tasted the beauty of the Supreme Lord Krsna in the course of his advancement in Krsna consciousness no longer has a taste for dead material things. Therefore, restrictions are there for the less intelligent neophytes in the spiritual advancement of life, but such restrictions are only good if one actually has a taste for Krsna consciousness. When one is actually Krsna conscious, he automatically loses his taste for pale things."
Guest (1): What is Krsna consciousness, if I might ask?
Prabhupada: Tell him.
Paramahamsa: Well, Krsna is the Supreme Lord, or the Supreme Soul, and we are all individual souls. So naturally we have an awareness of our relationship with Krsna, or God. When we say God or Krsna, we don't mean my God or your God, but we mean God, no matter which religion we're speaking of. So all of us naturally have a capacity to love Krsna, or God, and we can awaken this relationship with Him. And when that is awakened, then all unwanted things disappear, because everybody is actually frustrated, looking for permanent happiness in this temporary world. But when we awaken our Krsna consciousness then all of those frustrations disappear, and so all such problems like drug addiction become unnecessary.
Guest (2): How long does this process of withdrawal take?
Paramahamsa: He says how long does it take to stop taking drugs by the process of Krsna consciousness?
Prabhupada: If one lives with us at least for six months, he will give up.
Guest (2): Six months. And are there cases which relapse?
Paramahamsa: He says, "Are there cases of..., which relapse? Persons who begin to withdraw from drugs...?"
Prabhupada: Maybe one in five hundred.
Guest (2): One in five hundred.
Prabhupada: There is. Everyone is prone to fall down. But that percentage is very low, say, one in five hundred. We have got about ten thousand students all over the world. Out of them, they have fallen about ten or, say, fifteen, that's all.
Guest (2): You means you have ten thousand students who used to be addicted to something?
Prabhupada: Yes. Addicted to everything -- illicit sex, meat-eating, intoxication, and gambling. And now they have given up everything.
Guest (2): And those who relapse, can they be treated again?
Prabhupada: Again?
Paramahamsa: Those who have relapsed, can they be treated again?
Prabhupada: Ah, yes, that I say. Say, utmost, ten out of ten thousand.
Paramahamsa: He says, "Can they be treated again, a second time?"
Prabhupada: Oh, yes. Even American government is pleased with this movement because they have spent so much millions of dollars for stopping LSD, and they are surprised that when the people come here, they give up.
Guest (3): Do you teach abstinence or moderation in the use of these things?
Prabhupada: No, we say "Stop." We don't allow even smoking and drinking tea. That is also intoxication. We are so strict. But still, they give up. None of us take tea. We eat very simple things, vegetables, wheat, rice, little milk, that's all.
Guest (1): Did you say you eat meat?
Paramahamsa: Wheat, wheat.
Guest (1): Wheat. Ah. Is there any reason why you don't, you prohibit people from eating meat?
Prabhupada: Because it is sinful. It is sinful. According to Vedic conception, these four things are sinful activities, four pillars. Just like four pillars, the legs of this table, similarly, illicit sex, meat-eating, intoxication, and gambling are the four legs of sinful life.
Guest (1): What do you consider illicit sex?
Prabhupada: Illicit sex means animal life. The marriage is in the human society, not in the dog society. So if one has illicit sex, that means he is no better than dog.
Guest (2): I don't quite understand that. Did you say that illicit means sex between people who are not married?
Prabhupada: Yes. Sex is allowed only married couple. And that is also only for begetting child.
Guest (1): Married under what law? Under what religion? Under what religious law?
Prabhupada: There is in Bhagavad-gita, that dharmaviruddhah kamo 'smi. Find out. You can come here and read.
Paramahamsa: Which was that? Dharma...
Prabhupada: Dharmaviruddhah kamo 'smi.
Paramahamsa: Dharmaviruddho bhutesu?
Prabhupada: No, dharmaviruddhah kamo 'smi. Dharma-aviruddha. You know that verse.
Paramahamsa: Is that balam balavatam caham?
Prabhupada: Ah, yes, yes, yes.
Paramahamsa:
balam balavatam caham
kama-raga-vivarjitam
dharmaviruddho bhutesu
kamo 'smi bharatarsabha
Translation: "I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire. I am sex life which is not contrary to religious principles, O Lord of the Bharatas, Arjuna."
Guest (1): You can follow actually? What does that exactly mean? It's a direct translation, I think.
Paramahamsa: He says, "What does that exactly mean?"
Prabhupada: Explain to him.
Paramahamsa: Well, as it explains here, "The strong man's strength should be applied to protect the weak, not for personal aggression. Similarly, sex life, according to religious principles, dharma, should be for the propagation of children, not otherwise. The responsibility of parents is then to make their offspring Krsna conscious."
Guest (2): The question was which religion, which religious principle?
Paramahamsa: Well, he means our marriage under... We accept that marriage, sex life in marriage, is licit, not illicit. So he asked, "Under what religious principles or under which religion?"
Prabhupada: Any religion. Christian religion does not allow illicit sex. No adultery.
Guest (2): Any religious principles?
Prabhupada: This is religious principle. In the animal kingdom there is no marriage, but in the human society -- may be Christian, may be Hindu, may be Muslim -- there is marriage system. That is religious system.
Guest (2): Is polygamy illicit?
Prabhupada: No.
Guest (2): Not illicit. But it is...
Prabhupada: Polygamy means if it is married. Just like in the Vedic society they used to marry many wives. Just like Krsna. Krsna had sixteen thousand wives. And He maintained them sixteen thousand palaces. And He expanded Himself into sixteen thousand Krsnas. So that is a different thing; He is God. But if you can maintain each and every wife, you can marry more than one wife. But if you are unable to maintain, that is illicit. All the ksatriya kings, they used to marry more than one wife. Still in India, the ksatriyas, kings, they have more than one wife. But they maintain very nicely.
Guest (2): But your method of curing drug addiction has no definite practical use, surely.
Prabhupada: Why not practical?
Guest (2): Not everyone who wants to stop taking drugs can spend six months in solitude or in a company like yours.
Paramahamsa: He says he finds it not practical because not everyone who is addicted to drugs can spend six months in a temple with us.
Prabhupada: They are spending years. They are all European, Americans. They are not Indians. We have got here... You go to Melbourne. We have got big branch. In Sydney we have got. In Europe. They are doing that. It requires training, proper training. Then it will be done.
Guest (1): Well, if there is someone who wouldn't like to perhaps join this religion, but still wants to get treated...
Prabhupada: This is not religion. This is a culture.
Guest (1): Oh. Yes, this culture...
Prabhupada: Because we are admitting persons from various religions, various nations, various countries, and they accept this culture and they become purified.
Guest (1): Do they have to wear those clothes and shave their heads and chanting those things...
Prabhupada: That is optional. That is also optional. That is not compulsory. But in India because the brahmacaris, sannyasis, they dress in a particular way, they do that. But that is not compulsory. But it has got a psychological effect, because whenever we go, people chant "Hare Krsna!" So by this dress, we give chance, the other men, to chant Hare Krsna.
Guest (1): Well, could you correct me if I'm wrong. We have a society called Ramakrishna Society, a society in Burma. Those people who founded this society and are practicing Krsna culture, they don't wear those things, or they don't chant in their temple, but they do all sorts of social welfare type of thing. Is there any difference between...
Prabhupada: Ramakrishna Mission is not Vedic. It is a creation of Vivekananda's concoction. It is not Vedic. Just like they created a God, Ramakrishna. So that is not a Vedic sanction, that you create any fool rascal, a god.
Guest (1): Isn't yours a product of or derivative of Vedic?
Prabhupada: Yes, completely.
Guest (1): So how would you...
Prabhupada: Just like whatever question you are asking, we are answering from Vedic literature. We are not answering ourself. That is the difference. The evidence is from the Vedic literature. I don't say that "In my opinion it is like this." We don't say.
Guest (1): I'm sorry, I missed that point. Could you please explain?
Paramahamsa: He said it is Vedic because the answers he is giving are not his opinion or concoction, but he is giving from the Vedic knowledge or the Vedic scriptures instead of making up his own opinion. That is the meaning of Vedic; it is based on the Vedic teachings exactly.
Guest (1): But the Ramakrishna wasn't.
Prabhupada: No.
Guest (1): They formed their own way.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Guest (2): Do you consider that this kind of practice or the practicing this kind of culture is regimentated? A person has to come in and spend sometimes in the temple, and...
Prabhupada: Yes, the association, the influence of association. If you go to a drunkard association, you become a drunkard. And if you go to a saintly association, you become a saint. Sangat sanjayate kamah. Find out.
Paramahamsa:
dhyayato visayan pumsah
sangas tesupajayate
sangat sanjayate kamah
kamat krodho 'bhijayate
Translation: "While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises."
Prabhupada: If one becomes lusty and if it is not fulfilled, he becomes angry. This is all psychological.
Guest (2): Yeah, well, when a person is attached to that group in the temple, isn't this, become a lust too? You see, being influenced by the group and also attached to the people...
Prabhupada: We are teaching to be influenced by Krsna. Therefore we have written fifty books like that, four hundred pages. You can show some of our books.
Paramahamsa: This is Srimad-Bhagavatam, Volume Two, Volume Four...
Prabhupada: Sixty volumes.
Paramahamsa: Nectar of Devotion.
Guest (4): You seem to be placing a lot of emphasis on books. Are you following any particular path of yoga, niyama-yoga...?
Paramahamsa: She says we place a lot of emphasis on books, and she wonders if we are following a particular path such as dhyana-yoga or jnana-yoga or what?
Prabhupada: Bhakti-yoga.
Guest (4): Bhakti-yoga.
Prabhupada: There are different types of yogas. And you will find
yoginam api sarvesam
mad-gatenantar-atmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah
 [Bg. 6.47]
You have found out? Read it.
Paramahamsa:
yoginam api sarvesam
mad-gatenantar-atmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah
 [Bg. 6.47]
Translation: "And of all yogis, he who always abides in Me with great faith, worshiping Me in transcendental loving service, is most intimately united with Me in yoga and is the highest of all."
Prabhupada: This is bhakti-yoga.
Guest (2): Well, doesn't it mean that someone has to worship that person to be able to attain the enlightenment or Krsna consciousness?
Prabhupada: Yes, everyone is worshiping a person. Everyone is... But we have to worship the Supreme Person. That is perfect. Everyone is worshiping a person. Suppose you are employed somewhere. You have to worship your boss. Otherwise no employment.
Guest (2): Oh, well, I consider it as a mutual...
Prabhupada: It is mutual. It is mutual.
Guest (2): It's a mutual kind of support. But worshiping in a sense of religion or in a sense of a higher person, it's a different matter.
Prabhupada: Worshiping means appreciating high qualities. Worshiping is not blind. If I know that you have some high qualities, I worship you.
Guest (2): Do you worship to a person or what? To his doctrines or...?
Prabhupada: Worship means person. Worship does not mean imperson. Unless there is a person-to-person relationship, there is no question of worship.
Guest (2): Is... This picture of Sri Visnu, it's the person who you worship or...?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Guest (2): He is the creator.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Guest (2): And, in the sense that He is called Krsna?
Prabhupada: Krsna is His another form. Krsna is Visnu's another form.
Guest (2): I see, yes.
Prabhupada: Find out, aham adir hi devanam [Bg 10.2].
Guest (3): What is your correlation between belief and science? You mentioned that science is involved.
Prabhupada: Science?
Guest (3): Yes.
Prabhupada: Yes. What do you mean by science?
Guest (3): Well, the human sciences or otherwise is a study on its own. What is the relationship or the link-up between that and your faith?
Prabhupada: The relationship -- God is the creator of everything. So everything has got relationship with God. So what do you think of this science? The Vedanta-sutra, it says, athato brahma jijnasa: "Now this human life is meant for understanding the science of God." So the question is what is God? The answer is: janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. "God or the Supreme Absolute Truth is that from whom everything has come." So this is our science, the origin of everything.
Guest (3): Yes, the origin of everything. But why is it necessary for man to have to discover? I mean, man discovered the cure for poliomyelitis.
Prabhupada: Why man discovers?
Guest (3): Yes, well, I'm using it as an example.
Prabhupada: But he... Just like... It is not the question of discover, but because you are existing, you must have come from a father. That is science. It is not the question of finding out a father. Without father, there is no existence of you. It is not the question of finding out a father. Father must be there. This is science. Without father, is there any existence of any man or any animal? What your science says? Is it possible that anyone is existing without a father? What do you think?
Guest (4): I was just wondering, um, do you believe in...
Prabhupada: Who is there independently existing without having a father? What is that science?
Guest (2): It's not necessarily in the science itself...
Prabhupada: No, no, this is a sign, that if there is a man, he must have a father. This is science. So what is your opinion about this science?
Guest (1): I see it as a straight, deductive logic. If there is a...
Prabhupada: ...son, there must be father. That is science.
Guest (1): Don't you think this kind of reasoning is a deductive logic rather than inductive?
Prabhupada: No, what is the reasoning yours, that you deny father?
Guest (3): The father must have a father too, mustn't he?
Prabhupada: Yes. Similarly, there must be supreme father.
Guest (3): Well, who is the supreme father's father?
Prabhupada: Yes, that is enquiry, that you have got your father, your father has got father, he has got his father, he has got... Who is the supreme father? He is God.
Guest (1): Who is God's father?
Prabhupada: Nobody is His father. That is God. God is everyone's father, but He is without father. That is God. So long one has got father, he is not God. When you come to the point that here is the person who has no father -- He is independent -- that is God. The definition of God is given in the Vedic literature.
isvarah paramah krsnah
sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah
anadir adir govindah
sarva-karana-karanam
 [Bs. 5.1]
Anadi means He has no beginning. But He is the beginning of everything. This is simple definition of God. Anadi... Anadi means He has no beginning. But He is the beginning of everything. Anadir adir govindah sarva-karana-karanam [Bs. 5.1], the cause of all causes.
Guest (1): It becomes a belief rather than a logic now, then, for when we think about the God. You were saying everybody has father, so why God, in exception, He hasn't got a father?
Prabhupada: Therefore He is God, that He can exist without father. But you cannot exist without father. That is the difference between you and God.
Guest (2): Is God in the form of male or female or anything?
Prabhupada: He is male. Otherwise how He can beget? Female cannot beget without man's contact. The prakrti, the nature, is female, and God is male. Find out this verse,
sarva-yonisu kaunteya
murtayah sambhavanti yah
tasam brahma mahad yonir
aham bija-pradah pita
 [Bg. 14.4]
Paramahamsa:
sarva-yonisu kaunteya
murtayah sambhavanti yah
tasam brahma mahad yonir
aham bija-pradah pita
 [Bg. 14.4]
"It should be understood that all species of life, O son of Kunti, are made possible by birth in this material nature, and that I am the seed-giving father."
Prabhupada: So material nature is the mother, and God is the father.
Guest (2): But to whom did God give the seed?
Prabhupada: The prakrti, material nature. That is said here. Just like for begetting a child, both the father and mother requires. So the material nature is the mother, and God is the father. So so many forms of life are coming from the womb of material nature. This body is made of matter. This body is earth, water, air, fire, like that. This is made of... But I am the soul. That is from God. I am part and parcel of God, as soul. Mamaivamso jiva-bhutah. Find out.
Paramahamsa:
mamaivamso jiva-loke
jiva-bhutah sanatanah
manah sasthanindriyani
prakrti-sthani karsati
 [Bg. 15.7]
"Translation. The living entities in this conditional world are My eternal, fragmental parts. Due to conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the mind."
Prabhupada: Yes.
Guest (2): Is there an animal soul, Swami?
Prabhupada: Yes. Because it is already said, sarva-yonisu, "all forms of life." Even ant, tree, birds, plant, trees, everything. There are 8,400,000 forms of life. All of them, the soul is there. And they have got different... Just like you are differently dressed, I am differently dressed, but you are also soul, I am also soul.
Guest (4): You're really talking about the atman? Aren't you?
Prabhupada: Atma, yes, soul is atma. And the soul of the soul is God, Paramatma.
Guest (2): Is it possible for us to communicate with plants?
Prabhupada: With...?
Paramahamsa: With plants. Is it possible for us to communicate with plants?
Prabhupada: Yes, they have done. Sir Jagadish Candra Bose in Calcutta, Bose Institute, he has proved -- he has got machine -- that they feel pains and pleasure, which is recorded in the machine. If you pluck one leaf, they feel. Immediately it is recorded in the machine.
Guest (2): Could I come back to that eating of meat? Related to this alive, soul, matter. Aren't you in a sense eating another soul too if you're eating vegetables? Not only if you're eating meat?
Prabhupada: No, the thing is, the material world... It is said, jivo jivasya jivanam: "One living entity has to eat another living entity to keep himself alive." That is the natural law. But you should have discrimination. Because you have to eat some other living entity, it does not mean that you will eat your own son. You cannot support that "Because I have to live by eating another living entity, so what is the wrong if I eat my son?" Therefore the Vedic injunction is tena tyaktena bhunjitha [Iso mantra 1]. You are given some jurisdiction. You can eat. And actually you do so. Because I have to eat something, we do not eat anything and everything. We have got discrimination. So according to Bhagavad-gita... Find out this verse, patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati.
Paramahamsa:
patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah
 [Bg. 9.26]
Translation: "If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it."
Prabhupada: So our Krsna consciousness movement we accept what is eaten by Krsna. So Krsna wants these things: fruits, flower, vegetable, grains, milk. So we offer them and eat.
Guest (2): Why not animals?
Prabhupada: He does not say, "Give Me animals." Because we are Krsna conscious, we cannot take anything which is not accepted by Krsna.
Guest (2): Are blood transfusions permissible, Swami?
Paramahamsa: He says, "Are blood transfusions permissible?" When one is in an accident or cut and he loses blood, they take another man's blood and put it it. He says...
Prabhupada: Well, that is not bad. Because if one life is saved by transfusion admission... He is not dying. He is living. He is contributing his blood. So if he is contributing, you are saving some life, there is no harm.
Guest (2): But blood is animal tissue. [break]
Prabhupada: How they liked?
Paramahamsa: Um, the younger ones liked better. The nurse was asking where she could..., if she could refer people to visit us here, and I told her we don't know if this will be the permanent address, but as soon as we have a permanent address here I'll notify her. But she was wondering if she could send people, if the people would be welcome to come and visit and see the place here. And the Buddhist boy, he bought an incense from us. He said, "Where is that nice smell coming from?" I said, "Incense." He said, "I want some." The other gentlemen I don't... They're more set in their ways kind of men. I couldn't tell whether they were impressed or not. They don't express very well.
Prabhupada: But all their questions were answered.
Paramahamsa: Yes. When you told him where is the man who has, where is the person who did not come from a father, he began to... Before that, he was going to challenge whether this was science or belief, but then he had to be quiet. He just mumbled.
Prabhupada: And they inquired, "Then God has father?" No, God without father. That is God. That is the distinction between ordinary living entity and God.
Paramahamsa: So I will try to arrange someone for tonight and tomorrow morning; that geographer, I hope. And the people from the radio conversation. They're very well known, actually. Because I asked the geographer man, I said, "Do you know this man, Tim Downs?" And he said, "Oh, yes. I have heard him many times."
Prabhupada: Tim Down?
Paramahamsa: Tim Downs. He is the man who may come from radio to make a conversation. Then they will play it on radio. But I have to find out if he's coming. And in the case that there may be three people who want to come, so would it be possible for tonight to having two, maybe five o'clock and seven o'clock or something like that?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Paramahamsa: Yes. I will keep in touch with those people and let them know. I will send them some literature too. Should I go and telephone those people?
Prabhupada: Um hm. (end)
