Something Tangible-29 Jan 73 , Calcutta

"Something Tangible"

29 Jan 73 , Calcutta

Prabhupada: Sri Gosvamipada, Mr. Mohinath(?), Ladies and Gentlemen, I thank you very much for your kindly inviting me in this meeting to serve you to some extent according to my capacity. This Krsna consciousness movement is not a new movement, started by me, but this movement was started by Krsna Himself, five thousand years ago. I need not explain about this movement. Krsna, in the Battlefield of Kuruksetra, instructed Arjuna the Krsna consciousness movement. The, in the Ninth Chapter it is said, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. This is Krsna consciousness movement. "Always think of Krsna," man-mana. Bhava mad-bhakto: "Just to become devotee of Krsna." And mam namaskuru: "Offer obeisances unto Me." Krsna instructed, mam eva ya prapadyante mayam etam taranti te. Krsna instructed that He's the Supreme Personality. Mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya [Bg. 7.7]. Krsna instructed to surrender. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. So this Krsna consciousness movement is teaching this instruction of Krsna. That's all. That is the order of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He is Krsna Himself. Krsna-caitanya-namne.

Sri Rupa Gosvami said:

namo maha-vadanyaya
krsna-prema-pradaya te
krsnaya krsna-caitanya-
namne gaura-tvise namah
[Cc. Madhya 19.53]

When people understood Krsna wrongly... Sometimes big scholars say "Sophistry," that "Krsna wants full surrender." Others, they say, "Why you should fully surrender to Krsna? We have got our own gods." Therefore Krsna again came. As Gosvami Prabhupada said: radha krsna-pranaya vikrtir, sri caitanyakhyam prakatam avyayam. Radha and Krsna, combined together, advented as Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu to distribute Krsna-prema. Because the mission of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is to teach people how to develop love for Krsna. As it is quoted by Gosvami Prabhupada from Srimad-Bhagavatam:

sa vai pumsam paro dharmo
yato bhaktir adhoksaje
ahaituky apratihata
yayatma samprasidati
[SB 1.2.6]

Actually that is first-class religion. We do not say that Vedic religion is first-class or Christian religion is last-class. We do not say that. We say that religious system is first class which teaches the followers how to become lover of God. That is first-class religion. Ahaituky apratihata: without any cause, and without being impeded. Caitanya Mahaprabhu's philosophy is like that, which is explained by Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura: prema pumartho mahan aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa tanayas tad-dhama vrndavanam.

So we are preaching this philosophy to the Western countries by the order of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He desired,

prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama
sarvatra pracara haibe more nama

That is His prediction. It is nothing wonderful that we are doing. Simply we are trying to fulfill the prediction of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. But another order is there by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu that,

bharata-bhumite manusya janma haila yara
janma sarthaka kari' karo paropakara
[Cc. Adi 9.41]

So that is lamentable. Now Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is being spread all over the world, but our Indian brothers are not joining it, although it is the order of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Bharata-bhumite manusya janma haila yara. He requested to the humankind who has taken birth in this land, in this punya-bhumi, Bharatavarsa. Not to the cats and dogs, but to the human beings. That time has come now. If you want to prove that you are actually human being in this land, then you must take seriously the mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and spread all over the world. That is the order of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And it is not very difficult. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says,

amara ajnaya guru hana tara sarva desa
yare dekha tare kaha 'krsna'-upadesa
[Cc. Madhya 7.128]

To become guru, or spiritual master, is not very difficult task. Simply you have to follow the order of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, as he said. He accepted Krsna: the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa tanayoh. We have to simply preach that "You are searching after God, you great scientists, theologists, theosophists, mental speculators. You are searching after God, the Absolute Truth. Here is God, Krsna." Krsnas tu bhagavan svayam [SB 1.3.28].

isvarah paramah krsnah
sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah
anadir adir govindah
sarva-karana-karanam
[Bs. 5.1]

So our task is very easy. Everything is there. Our Vedic literature is so full, so treasure of knowledge, great treasure of knowledge, we haven't got to make research, search out where is the truth. Truth is there and is explained in the Srimad-Bhagavatam: satyam param dhimahi [SB 1.1.1]. Why don't you take it? The whole world is suffering for want of this knowledge. Before me, many swamis went in the Western countries, but they did not give the actual pure Vedic culture. They invented their own ways. Therefore it was not very fruitive. It was not very satisfactory. People did not accept. Still there are so many yogis, the so-called yogis, are going there, exploiting the people, and coming back. But our Krsna philosophy is taken very seriously in the Western countries. We have got now hundred and two branches all over the world. Only in America, we have got fifty branches. And other countries they have got fifty-two branches -- in America, in Canada, in England, in France, in Germany, in Switzerland, in Japan, in Australia, in New Zealand. All over the world. So now we want some of the young men to come forward to become really brahmanas, Vaisnavas. Our Vedic culture is divided into four varnas: brahmana ksatriya vaisya sudra. Unfortunately we are simply manufacturing sudras, not brahmanas. That is the defect of modern education. Sudra, sudra means paricaryatmakam karyam sudra karma svabhava-jam [Bg. 18.44]. After education, every (indistinct) is hankering after a service. That is sudra karma svabhava-jam. This is not perfect education. There must be brahmanas who are independent. Canakya Pandita, whose name is still, still celebrated, he was prime minister of Maharaja Candragupta, but he was not accepting a single paisa as salary. That was the, formerly, although there was monarchy, still there was a council of learned brahmanas and sages. They used to advise the king. The brahmanas did not take part in politics, but they gave advice, instruction to the kings, rajarsi. Imam rajarsayoh viduh. The rajarsi used to understand what is the values of life under the instruction of brahmanas, and they execute the order of the brahmanas. The people were happy. And because at the present moment such system is lost, people are confused and they are in frustration.

So this Krsna consciousness movement is all-embracing. It can solve all the problems of the world -- political, social, economical, religious, everything. It is all-embracing. So my request is that I am working now with my American disciples and European disciples. Why not Indians? I think in this meeting there are many young men, educated, learned scholars. Join this movement and, according to the order of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu,

bharata-bhumite manusya janma haila yara
janma sarthaka kari' karo paropakara
[Cc. Adi 9.41]

This is the time to do welfare activities for the whole world. They are merged into confusion, everywhere. You know that in the Western countries, the hippy movements. What are the hippies? They're also educated, coming from very rich family also, but they do not like the way of envelopment as their fathers and grandfathers liked. They have rejected. So this is the golden opportunity to preach the Krsna cult all over the world. You are lamenting because a few yards of land has been taken away from your country as Pakistan, but if you spread this Krsna consciousness movement, the whole world will become Hindustan. There is such potency; I give you my direct perception. People are hankering after it. So long I am in India, practically I am wasting my time. Outside India, this reception is taken so seriously that every part of my moment is properly utilized.

So I have come to this university with a hope that some of you become really brahmana. The Sanskrit department is meant for brahmanas. Pathan pathan yajana yajana dana pratigraha. A brahmana is called pandita. Why? Because a brahmana must be learned. Brahmana is not called a fool. So this department, Sanskrit department, is meant for the brahmanas. So I wish that some of you must join this movement, go to the foreign countries, preach this sublime cult of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama. There is great need. We have, of course, established so many temples, but still we require to establish temples, Radha-Krsna temples, Caitanya Mahaprabhu's temple, in every village, every town of the world. Now from each and every of our centers, we are sending devotees in buses. They are going interior, into the villages of Europe and America, and they are very much well received. England especially, they are going village to village. They are very much well received. This cult is so nice. Even Christian priests, they are surprised. They are surprised. One of the priest in Boston, he issued pamphlet that "These boys, they're our boys, from Christian and Jews. Before this movement, they did not care to come to the churches even. Now they are mad after God." They are admitting. The Christian priestly class, they are not against us. Those who are saner class, they're admitting that "Swamiji's giving something tangible." Their fathers and forefathers come to me. They bow down. They say, "Swamiji, it is a great fortune for us that you have come to our country." So I am alone working, and the movement is being appreciated. And if persons, scholars from this University come forward and teaches this movement, it is meant for that. Brahmana's business is that, preaching. Brahma janati. One must know Brahman, and distribute the knowledge of brahma-jnana. That is the business of brahmanas.

So I wanted to recite some stanzas from Srimad-Bhagavatam, but there is no very much time. Long, long years ago, the father of Maharaja Bharata, under whose name this planet is called Bharatavarsa, so he instructed: nayam deho deha-bhajam nrloke kastan kaman arhati vid-bhujam ye [SB 5.5.1]. Here is the Fifth Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam. Nayam deho deha-bhajam nrloke kastan kaman arhati vid-bhujam ye. This human form of life, ayam deha... Ayam deha nrloke: "in the human society." This is not meant for working very hard like the dogs and hogs. Kastan kaman arhati vid-bhujam ye. Simply by working hard, day and night, for sense gratification, this is done by the dogs and hogs. This is not meant for the human society. But, but at the present moment, people are being instructed in such a way... I've seen so many -- especially in Calcutta -- so many educated boys and girls, they are hankering after service. Day and night they are working. This is not the effect of education. The effect of education should be peaceful mind, peaceful living. That is the duty of the parents, of the guardians, of the government. When there is monarchical government... We see from the reign of Prthu Maharaja. He was seeing that every brahmana is engaged in his occupational duty, every ksatriya is employed, is engaged in occupational duty. Similarly vaisya. There was no question of unemployment. That is the first duty of the government to see. Neither there is division of the brahmanas, ksatriyas, vaisya, sudra, although it is made by Krsna Himself: catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah [Bg. 4.13]. There have been so many anomalies in the society for want of this Vedic culture. Now here is the opportunity. People are accepting Krsna consciousness movement very nicely. You can introduce this Vedic culture throughout the whole world. They're receiving.

So the human form of life is especially meant for tapasya. Tapo divyam. Here it is said: tapo divyam putraka yena sattvam suddhyed yasmad brahma-saukhyam anantam [SB 5.5.1]. We are hankering after happiness, but happiness cannot be enjoyed so long our existence is not purified. So for purification of our existence we have to undergo tapasya. So we are introducing this tapasya in nutshell. We are asking our students four principles, four regulative principles. No illicit sex life. Beyond marriage life, there is no sex. No intoxication, up to smoking and drinking tea. No meat-eating. No eggs, no fish. And no gambling. We are... And chanting this Hare Krsna mantra. These five principles we are teaching. These four regulative principles, refraining from sinful activities. These are the basic pillars of sinful activities: illicit sex, intoxication, meat-eating, and gambling. These are the four pillars of sinful life. That is... We get from the sastra. Pariksit Maharaja, he enunciated that Kali Yuga. He was... He ordered Kali Yuga, Kali, to live in these places. When he was ordered to go out of his kingdom, he said, "My dear Lord, everywhere is your kingdom. Where shall I live?" So he ordered him that "You live in these places, striyah suna panam dyutam yatra papas catur-vidhah."

So if we want to elevate the social condition, we shall teach people to become purified. Without being purified, simply so-called performance of religious system will not help. Srama eva hi kevalam [SB 1.2.8]. Svanusthitasya dharmasya samsiddhir hari-tosanam [SB 1.2.13]. We should teach people how to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is the injunction given by Suta Gosvami in Naimisaranya, the assembly of great brahmanas, learned brahmanas.

atah pumbhir dvija-srestha
varnasrama-vibhagasah
svanusthitasya dharmasya
samsiddhir hari-tosanam
[SB 1.2.13]

This is the philosophy. So we are teaching this philosophy all over the world. They are being accepted. But I am doing it single-handed. But if some of you come and join us, it will be increased, and people will be very, very happy.

Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. [break] That is my reply. Otherwise, I have not come to teach you something invented by me. I have come to teach you about Krsna consciousness. And if you are not interested in Krsna consciousness, then you must be amongst these four classes of men: duskrtinah mudhah, naradhama, mayayapahrta-jnana. This is my first reply. So far economic condition is concerned, then I may say, eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman. God supplies you everything. God is supplying food to the elephant who is eating at a time forty kilos of food, and He's supplying to the ants also. So your anxiety for food, that is not humanly. Even the cats and dogs, they are not anxious for their food. Even the birds, they rise early in the morning, they are also not anxious for the food. God has arranged for food, everyone. Tal labhyate duhkhavad anyatah sukham. As you do not try for getting distress, it comes upon you according to your karma, similarly the so-called happiness also will come upon you without any endeavor. But because you have no faith in God, you are thinking that you will die out of hunger. That is not the position. Tasyaiva hetoh prayateto kovido. Our only business is how to become advanced in Krsna consciousness. There is no other problem in human life. Athato brahma jijnasa. This is the human life. But you have been deviated from that high standard of life. You are now questioning in this way. That is my reply. Thank you very much. (end)

"Purpose Of Installing Deity"

21 Aug 73 , London

Prabhupada: Goloka-namni nija-dhamni. There is a planet in the spiritual world. The material world, you can see the material sky, limit of the sky, the horizon, but you are not able to reach even the moon planet, the nearest planet. But within this universe, within this horizon, there are innumerable planets. Asesa. Yasya prabha prabhavato jagad-anda-koti kotisv asesa-vasudhadi vibhuti-bhinnam [Bs. 5.40]. By the shining effulgence from the body of Krsna... That is called brahmajyoti. Within that brahmajyoti or effulgence there are innumerable universes. Ananta-koti. Yasya prabha prabhavato jagad-anda-koti. Koti means innumerable. One million, ten millions equal to one lakh. Such hundred lakhs makes a koti. So actually we see there are innumerable planets but beyond this creation, this is material creation, one-fourth manifestation, one-fourth manifestation of God's creation, this, this material world... This is also only one universe. There are innumerable universes clustered together and beyond this clustering of universes there is another sky which is called paravyoma or spiritual sky. If you want to go there, then you have to penetrate through the material coverings -- earth, water, fire, water, fire, air, like that. Each layer so big. And the next layer is ten times more than the first layer. In this way there are seven layers. So penetrating through that seven layers you reach the spiritual sky. And after reaching the spiritual sky, there are so many Vaikuntha planets, spiritual planets.

So that is summarized: goloka-namni nija-dhamni tale ca tasya [Bs. 5.43]. The topmost planet is called Goloka or Krsna, Krsnaloka. Go means cows. Krsna is very much fond of cows. Therefore, that planet is called also Goloka, the planet full of cows. We have recited Brahma-samhita today, cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vrksa-laksa-vrtesu surabhir abhipalayantam [Bs. 5.29]. Krsna is engaged in tending cows. He's very much fond of cows. Surabhi, they are not ordinary cows. In the spiritual world, everything is spiritual. So there is a planet, goloka-namni. So, that is the highest planet. Goloka-namni nija-dhamni. That is the personal abode. Goloka-namni nija-dhamni tale ca tasya: [Bs. 5.43] under that planet, there are other planetary systems. They are called Devidhama, Mahesadhama, Haridhama.

Now this universe, this material world is called Devi-dhama. Devi-dhama. It is under the control of the material energy. Srsti-sthiti-pralaya-sadhana-saktir-eka chayeva yasya bhuvanani vibharti durga [Bs. 5.44]. This energy is also personified called Durgadevi. So above this planetary system there is Mahesa-dhama. Mahesa-dhama. In the border between spiritual sky and material sky. Above that, there are Hari-dhama, the Vaikuntha planets where Narayana, in various forms is predominating. And above all of them there is Goloka-dhama or Krsna's dhama. So picture we have given in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. So goloka-namni nija-dhamni tale ca tasya [Bs. 5.43], devi-mahesa-hari-dhamasu tesu tesu, te te prabhava-nicaya vihitas ca yena. Each planetary system has got specific atmosphere. Everything is specific. So that is done, that is created by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So in this way, Krsna is there in the topmost Goloka-dhama. But still goloka-dhamni nivasati, although He is living there, akhilatma-bhuto, He is everywhere. He's everywhere. That is Krsna.

Just like we are sitting in this hall. We are not in our apartment house. Krsna is not like that. He is in the goloka-namni nija-dhamni, in His own planet, He's engaged in His occupation. Somewhere He's tending cows, somewhere He's dancing with the gopis. He is going on with His enjoying occupations. But still He's everywhere. Goloka-namni, goloka eva nivasaty [Bs. 5.37]. Nivasaty means although He's living there, akhilatma bhutah. He's everywhere. He's within your heart. Isvara sarva bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati. He's within your heart. Not only within the heart, He is within the atom also. Eko 'py asau racayitum jagad-anda-kotim yac-chaktir asti jagad-anda caya yad-antah andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham [Bs. 5.35]. His one plenary portion has entered this material world as Garbhodakasayi Visnu. From Garbhodakasayi Visnu, there is expansion of Ksirodakasayi Visnu. That Ksirodakasayi Visnu has entered every atom. Eko 'py asau racayitum jagad-anda-kotim yac-chaktir asti jagad-anda-caya yad-antah. So Krsna is everywhere, and if you are devotee, then you can catch Him. This is the secret. Just like electricity is everywhere, electrons. One who can tackle the electrons, they can talk without any direct connection by electronic method, thousand thousand miles away. Just like radio message, television message. So similarly, Krsna is also everywhere. Just like the waves of sound wave is going on. As soon as you produce, I produce one sound, immediately within a second the sound goes round the earth seven times. So if a material thing has got so much power, just think how much power God has got. So He is everywhere. Simply you have to catch Him. And He's also ready for being caught. Yes. If somebody wants to catch Him... Suppose you are a devotee. If you want to catch Him, He comes forward ten times than your desire. He's so kind. Therefore, we have to simply receive Him.

So this Deity worship in the temple means worshiping Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He's akhilatma-bhutah [Bs. 5.37]. Where you shall find Him? He's everywhere. Therefore, He has very kindly accepted to assume a form which you can handle. This form of Krsna, the atheist will say that "Here is a form made of marble. How is that they are worshiping God, Krsna?" That is atheist view. But from the sastra, we understand Krsna, if He is within the atom, why not within the marble? It is simply understanding. Not only within, the marble itself is also Krsna. Because in the Bhagavad-gita we understand: bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh kham mano buddhir eva ca [Bg. 7.4]. These material elements, earth, earth, water, fire, air, they are Krsna's energy. Krsna says bhinna me prakrtir astadha. They are My energies, separated energy. So even if you consider that here is not Krsna but a marble. No, that marble is also Krsna. Marble is also... And Krsna is, being omnipotent, even for your logical argument... Even if you say that this is a marble statue, still Krsna is so powerful, omnipotent, that He can accept your service even through this marble. Actually, it is not marble. Or from spiritual vision, everything being Krsna, so Krsna can accept your service even through the marble, even through the water, even through the fire. Why not? Energy. Just like if you come to the sunshine, energy of sun, you immediately touch the sun globe. Is it not? Because the beams are coming from the sun globe so as soon as you touch the sunshine, sunbeam, you touch the sun immediately. And there are yogis who can reach the sun planet through the beams of sun. Because the spirit soul is very, very small. Smaller than the atom. Kesagra-sata-bhagasya satadha kalpitasya ca [Cc. Madhya 19.140]. And the spirit soul can go everywhere. And it is, the speed of spirit soul is greater than the mind. You have got experience of the speed of the mind. In a second you can go many thousands of miles. Mind. Suppose you are sitting here, those who are Indians, immediately, within a second, one can reach Calcutta, Bombay. Immediately, without even, less than a second's time. The mind's speed, you can imagine. And finer than the mind is the spirit soul. So how much speedy is the spirit soul, that we have to know from the sastras. Sastra yonitvat. Everything.

Therefore do not think that we have installed a marble statue. The rascals will say "They are heathens." No. We are worshiping Krsna personally. Krsna personally, Krsna has kindly assumed this form just... Because we cannot see Krsna, the gigantic Krsna, or Krsna is everywhere... Atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih [Cc. Madhya 17.136]. Our imperfect senses cannot see Krsna immediately. But Krsna is so kind, as we can see... We can see stone, we can see wood, we can see earth, we can see water, we can see color. Therefore, Krsna comes before us just quite suitable for our vision. But He's Krsna. So this Deity worship, those who are in charge of Deity worship, they never should think that here is a statue. No. Here is Krsna. The honor, the respect, the samra (indistinct), means with great honor... You must always think that here is Krsna personally. Don't think that it is statue. Krsna personally. So you should honor and think also and be cautious so that you may not commit offense. Krsna worship, if you neglect the process, then it will be offensive. There are sixty-four kinds of offenses. You have seen it in The Nectar of Devotion. So not very much... You should be very much clean, first thing is. Cleanliness is next to godliness. Very much clean, rise early in the morning, take your bath and perform mangala aratrika, then chant Hare Krsna mantra, then read scriptures. In this way remain twenty-four hours engaged in Krsna's service. This is the purpose of installing Deity. Not that after few days you think it is a burden. No, then it will be great offense. It is not burden. It is a great opportunity to serve Krsna. As the gopis are serving in Goloka Vrndavana. Krsna is so kind. He has come here to accept your service in a manner in which you can handle Him. You can dress Krsna, you can offer prasada, you can chant His glory. In this way, always remain engaged in Krsna consciousness and gradually you'll find how you are advancing in spiritual life. Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. (end)

"Human Life Very Rarely Obtained"

7 Sept 73 , Stokholm

listen

Take a test
Prabhupada:

kaumara acaret prajno
dharman bhagavatan iha
durlabham manusam janma
tad apy adhruvam arthadam
[SB 7.6.1]

yatha hi purusasyeha
visnoh padopasarpanam
yad esa sarva-bhutanam
priya atmesvarah suhrt
[SB 7.6.2]

I am reciting some verses from Srimad-Bhagavatam. Srimad-Bhagavatam is the essence of Vedic literature. It is said nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam idam [SB 1.1.3]. Just like a big tree. What is the essential thing in the big tree? That is the fruit. Suppose a mango tree. Big mango tree. But what we want from the mango tree? The mango. And if the mango is ripened, still, it is very nice. So it is compared, nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam [SB 1.1.3]. Nigama means Vedic literature. Veda, Veda means knowledge. Vetti veda vidoh vinte vid vicarane. So vid-dhatu, those who are Sanskrit scholars here, they'll understand. Vid means to know, knowledge. So Vedic literature means to receive knowledge, authoritative knowledge. Not false knowledge. False knowledge, there is difference between false knowledge and authoritative knowledge. So far we are concerned at the present moment, whatever knowledge we are giving or accepting, they are more or less false knowledge. Not authoritative knowledge.

Just like we are studying the outer space, so many scientists are studying. But still they cannot give any perfect information of all the planets. Although we see, actually, we are seeing daily. Take for example the sun planet. We see every morning the sun is there. But actually we do not know what is the sun planet. There are, may be so many theories, but actually, we do not know what is the sun planet. But we can understand from the Vedic literature. The sun planet is as good as this planet. There are also cities, towns, houses, and population, and it is very big. This information we get from the Vedic knowledge. Just like in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, Krsna says that, imam vivasvate yogam proktavan aham avyayam [Bg. 4.1]. "This knowledge of Bhagavad-gita, I spoke first to the sun-god. His name is Vivasvan." Vivasvan manave praha. "And that Vivasvan explained this knowledge to his son Manu." Manur iksvakave 'bravit. "And Manu also explained the same knowledge to his son, Maharaja Iksvaku, King Iksvaku." He's the forefather of the ksatriya dynasty in which Lord Ramacandra appeared. So we get this knowledge from the Vedas, perfectly.

There are so many things, just like the forms of life, how many form of life are there. That is stated in the Vedic knowledge. 8,400.000 species. Jalaja nava-laksani. In the water, there are 900,000 forms of life. It does not say one million or eleven hundred or, no, exactly. Nine hundred. Jalaja nava-laksani sthavara laksa-vimsati. Sthavara means the living entities which cannot move. Just like the trees, plants, they are also living entities, but they cannot move. They are called sthavara. Two millions. Now where is the botanist who can give exact information how many plants and trees are there? But you get fully, full information. Sthavara laksa-vimsati krmayo rudra-sankhyakah. This is the evolutionary process, from aquatics to the plant life, then insect life, krmayo. Rudra-sankhyakah. Rudra-sankhyakah means eleven hundred thousand. Paksinam dasa-laksanam. The birds, after insects, the next evolution is to the bird species. So there are one million different species of birds. Paksinam dasa-laksanam. Pasavah trimsal-laksani. Then beast, four-legged beast, animals. There are three millions. And manusah catur-laksani. And then we come to the form of the human being; there are also four hundred thousand species. In this way, altogether there are 8,400,000 species, forms of life.

Now modern botanists and medical men and there are so many people, they are scholars, interested to understand, biologists. But here we get the correct information from the Vedas. Similarly, not only of this information, all departmental knowledge, namely this science, geography, philosophy, religion, sociology, politics, whatever you want, you can learn from the Vedic information. There is perfect information. So it is compared with a tree. So that tree, and the ripened fruit is this Srimad-Bhagavatam. Nigama kalpa-taror galitam phalam idam [SB 1.1.3]. Galitam phalam idam. A fruit, if you take from the tree, if it is not ripened, you can keep in a store and it gets by temperature... That ripened fruit and the fruit actually ripened in the tree, there is difference in taste. So this Srimad-Bhagavatam is compared as the ripened fruit. Nigama-kalpa taror galitam phalam [SB 1.1.3]. So we have translated this Srimad-Bhagavatam. This is one part, here, you can see. In sixty parts. In the Bhagavatam there are eighteen thousand verses and we are trying to place before you in English translation, and gradually, in other language also. It is being translated in German language, in French language and Spanish. Gradually. Some of our books are being published by Macmillan company, and they are being distributed. What is the name of that?

Hamsaduta: (indistinct)

Prabhupada: So we are selling our books very nicely, and our whole institution is practically financed by this selling of books. Even in Indian parliament, we are supposed to be very, very rich community. So, in India there are persons who are very suspicious of this Hare Krsna movement, and they are surprised how we are maintaining more than one hundred branches all over the world. "Where you get financial help?" So, they think that America has got a, what is, CID department?

Devotees: CIA.

Prabhupada: CIA Department. So they are financing us, America. Just see the foolishness. The CIA department has taken this sankirtana movement. But these rascals are thinking like that; that it is a branch of the CIA Movement. So, being suspicious, some of the rascals raised the question in Parliament in India, that "This community are fabulously rich. So it is understood that they belong to the CIA Department of America. Is it a fact?" It was raised in the Parliament and the question was put before the home member. "So if they are CIA Department, they are pushing on this Hare Krsna movement under the garb, then what is government's information? This is first question. If not, where they are getting so much money spending?" In this way two, three questions were raised. Fortunately the home member was aware of our movement and he replied that "They do not belong to the CIA Department. We do not have any such information and there is no need of any action. And so far their finance is concerned, we understand that they are selling their literatures and public contribution." That is the fact, actually. We are selling our books about, three, more, not less than three thousand dollars daily, and that is giving us our financial help. We have no other means of income. Although we have got expenditure not less than one hundred thousands of dollars per month throughout the whole world.

So anyway, it is our attempt to give you the ripened fruit of Vedic knowledge. This is our attempt. This Krsna consciousness movement is just distributing the ripened fruit of Vedic knowledge. So Vedic knowledge, the ultimate goal of Vedic knowledge is to know God. Not only Vedic, any scripture, any book of knowledge. So the ultimate goal of knowledge is to know God. If you do not... Because this human form of life is meant for that purpose. That is explained here by Prahlada Maharaja: kaumara acaret prajno dharman bhagavatan iha [SB 7.6.1]. This Prahlada Maharaja, he was a small boy, five years old. Somehow or other, he was enlightened in Krsna consciousness, and at the age of five years old, he was going to school and he was trying to preach this Krsna consciousness movement in the school. I'm especially reading these verses because it is university, a school for teaching to the students. So Prahlada Maharaja says that this teaching of this learning of Krsna consciousness, should begin from very childhood. Kaumaram. Kaumara means the age between ten years and fifteen years. That is called kaumara. Kaumara acaret prajno. Prajno means one who is intelligent. So from just one child is ten years old, from the age of ten years up to fifteen years, this period must be used especially for understanding Bhagavata-dharma, for understanding what is God. That is Bhagavata-dharma.

Dharma means it is translated into English as "religion." And religion means a kind of faith. But so far the Sanskrit word dharma is there, it does not mean a kind of faith. It is a fact. It is a fact. Faith, you can believe for some time and again you can reject. That is faith. But what is fact, that cannot be changed. Just like water, water is liquid. That is a fact. It is not a kind of faith, it is a fact. You cannot make water solid. As soon as you talk of water, you have got immediate knowledge that it is a liquid thing. Similarly, if you take stone, the quality of stone, it is hard, it is not liquid. If somebody says, "I have brought some liquid stone." Is it possible? No, what is this nonsense. So dharma means that quality which cannot be changed. As soon as you take water, it must be liquid. If... You can say that water sometimes becomes ice, very hard. But that is not the unnatural, uh, natural state. Ice is there, but it is trying to come to the natural state to become again liquid. Again liquid. Because liquidity is the natural stage of water. It cannot be changed. Similarly dharma means, the exact word, Sanskrit, those who are Sanskrit scholars here, they will understand. Dharma means you cannot change. That is not possible. In any circumstances, you cannot change.

So here it is said, kaumaram acaret prajno dharman. Dharman bhagavata. So dharma, which is generally translated into English, that is one for everyone. It is not that we are Hindus, somebody else Christians, somebody else Buddhists, "we have got different faith," "we have got different faith." What is depending on faith, that is not dharma, that is not religion. The quality which you cannot change, that is religion. Therefore, the definition of dharma is given in the Vedic literature: dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. Dharma means the codes or the laws which is given by God. This is the simple definition of dharma. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. Just like law. What is that law? Law means the codes or the order given by the state. That is law. You cannot manufacture law at home, that "I have manufactured something." So at the present moment the so-called religion is going on in the name that it is religion but it is manufactured by some concoction and it is being supported by persons that "You can manufacture your own religion." No, that you cannot. You cannot manufacture your own religion. Religion means the codes given by God. Just like law means the order given by the state. Just like the law is "keep to the right." That is given, the order is given by the state. You cannot say, that "Now I have made a law, keep to the left." That is not possible. Nobody will be pleased or nobody will accept that. So dharma you cannot change.

So Prahlada Maharaja says, kaumara acaret prajno dharman bhagavatan iha [SB 7.6.1]. "My dear friends, from the beginning of your kaumara age, as soon as you are on the age of ten years,"... Of course, he was preaching when he was five years old. Actually, education begins, that is the Indian system, from five years. Up to five years, the children are not bothered with any kind of education. They play and become free. But as soon as he is five years old, he's sent to the school. And actual education begins from tenth year. So Prahlada Maharaja says, "My dear friends, that, you try to be educated in religion, especially in the Bhagavata religion." Bhagavata religion means the Science of God, to understand what is God. So why it is so urgent? That is replied here. Durlabham manusam janma. This human form of life is very rarely obtained.

As I have explained, that, there are 8,400,000 species of life. But unfortunately, there is no proper education how the living entity, what is that living entity and how it is transmigrating from one body to another? Tatha dehantara-praptir. In the Bhagavad-gita you'll find, dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara tatha dehantara-praptir [Bg. 2.13]. Krsna says, the authoritative knowledge, that, as the soul, dehi, the proprietor of the body. We do not know whether I am this body or I am the proprietor of this body. That knowledge is also lacking. Big, big professors, they do not know. I was talking in Moscow, one big professor, Professor Kotofsky, he said: "Swamiji, after this body's finished, everything is finished." This is their knowledge. Blunt knowledge. No, it is not finished. We get from the Vedic literature, na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. Nityo sasvato yam na jayate na mriyate va kadacit. The soul is eternal. Soul is eternal and soul does not take birth. The body, we get a new body, that is called birth. And when this body is annihilated, that is called death. So birth and death is in reference with the body, not with the soul.

I don't think in any university throughout the whole world there is such educational department where this science is handled. The soul. Whether I am this body or I'm not the body. I am not this body; that is the fact. The example is given. What is that? Dehino asmin dehe, in this body there is the proprietor, the soul. Dehino 'smin yatha dehe [Bg. 2.13]. Within this body, there is proprietor. And he's changing bodies. Just like the same soul in a childhood body, in a boyhood body, in a youth-hood body. Then again in a body like me, an old body. So all the previous bodies, they are now finished. Although I know I am soul, I know that I possessed a childhood body, I possessed a boyhood body, I possessed a youthhood body, that those bodies are not existing. They are finished. But I am existing. I know. Therefore this is very simply formula Krsna gives. Dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara [Bg. 2.13]. This body is changing, but the soul is eternal. Nityo sasvato yam purano. Although it is very, very old. Because soul is the part and parcel of God. As God is existing eternally, similarly, the soul is also existing eternally. This is a great science.

Therefore Prahlada Maharaja is requesting, "My dear friends, you try to learn this science," dharman bhagavatan iha, "from this very childhood life." Because this human form of life, he says that, durlabham manusam janma. Manusam janma. This form of body... We have got by evolutionary process. It is a chance given by the nature to understand what is God. This is the main business of this body. Not that economic development. That is not the business of human body. Sense gratification. Sense gratification is there in the animals. That is stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Nayam deho deha-bhajam nrloke kastan kaman arhate vid-bhujam ye [SB 5.5.1]. The human form of life is not meant for to live like the dogs and the hogs. They are busy always for maintaining the body. They are busy. They have no other business. They cannot understand. If I bring some dog in this meeting and try to make him understand, "Please note that you are not this body." It is not possible for them to understand. But a human being, he may be educated like dogs and hog, but if he's given reasonably the, as Krsna is giving that the soul is the proprietor of this body and he is as he's changing in this body He's a child-child means he has got a child's body. Baby means he has got a baby's body. Young man means he has a youth's body. So this body has been changed. Similarly when this body is useless, no more can be used, then he transmigrates to another body. Tatha dehantara-praptir.

Now what kind of body he's going to get? Because I have already explained. There are 8,400,000 different forms of body. So the answer is he can get any of these forms. There is no guarantee that he will again get the American body or Englishmen body or Swiss body -- not like that. That will depend on nature. That is not in your hand. As soon as you change your body, the next change will be offered by nature according to your desire. So in this life we are creating different types of desires. Therefore, we find different types of bodies. This is nature's work. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27]. Don't think that you are independent. None of us are independent. We may think independently that "There is no God, there is no nature's work, we are everything." That crazy statements may be there, but there is good management, beyond our conception. As you see there is good management in the natures -- exactly in due course of time the sun is rising, the moon is rising, the seasons are being changed, the water is there in the ocean, it is not transgressing the limit, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean. There is full control of the material nature. And behind this material nature, there is God. Prakrteh kriyamanani [Bg. 3.27]. Prakrti, nature is working, but nature is working under the direction of God. That we get information from this Vedic literature.

mayadhyaksena prakrtih
suyate sa-caracaram
hetunanena (kaunteya)
jagad viparivartate
[Bg. 9.10]

Don't think nature is blind. Nature is matter, material energy. It cannot work independently, just like machine. Machine, it is made of matter. But if there is no driver, however efficient machine may be, it is useless, a lump of matter (only). There must be driver. Similarly, whatever wonderful activities you find within this material nature, that is not being done independently. That is being done under the driver. Just like the big car or this airship is running very nicely so long the pilot is there, so long the driver is there. Without pilot, even the arrangement is very nice, good machinery assembly, but it cannot work. Similarly, this nature, although we find very wonderfully working, but behind this nature, there is the living entity, supreme living entity, God. So to understand that God, how He is working, what we are, what is our relationship with God, why we are here, why we are transmigrating from one body to another -- all these are called bhagavata-dharma. This is called bhagavata-dharma.

Bhagavata means in relationship with God. So our, this Krsna consciousness movement is bhagavata-dharma. Bhagavata-dharma means we are presenting God. People are searching out whether there is God, God is dead or alive. But we are giving, "Here is God. Here is His name, here is His address, here is His activities." Everything we are giving distinctly. Not blindly, but there is philosophy, there is reason, there is logic, and these are all stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, sixty volumes. So Prahlada Maharaja says that everyone from the very childhood, that means when education begins, this bhagavata-dharma. Otherwise, we are missing the point. We are missing the opportunity of this human form of life. We are simply living like cats and dogs and dying like cats and dogs. And if we maintain that mentality like cats and dogs, then next life... Because we are given the opportunity by nature to utilize our consciousness, to utilize our intelligence, to understand God. But if we do not utilize, if we live like cats and dogs, then next life we have to accept, by nature's law, the body of cats and dog. This is bhagavata-dharma. This is an opportunity. Here is the opportunity to make your choice whether again you are going to be cats and dogs or whether you are going to be elevated to the highest position, back to home, back to Godhead.

That is highest perfection. Na te vidhuh svartha-gatim hi visnum. Practically, the so-called civilized men at the present moment, they do not know what is the actual goal of life. The Prahlada Maharaja advising, although he's a child, but he has heard from authority, from Narada Muni, therefore he's instructing his class friend. Because his father was a great atheist, Hiranyakasipu. He was very angry. When Prahlada Maharaja used to talk of God consciousness, he was very much disturbed, he used to chastise him, "Wherefrom this nonsense boy has learned this God, God, God?" He was very much disturbed. So he was very afraid of his father at home. But in the school, as soon as the teachers were away, tiffin hour, he would take the opportunity and preach something about God. That is the statement here. So he says, durlabham manusam: "My dear friends, this human form of life is very rarely obtained." Durlabham manusam janma tad apy adhruvam. Adhruvam means it will also not stay. "Because I have got this human form of body, therefore, I'll live forever." No. I'll have to die like cats and dog. But because I have got this human form of life, I can understand what is the truth. That is my opportunity. Durlabham manusam janma tad apy adhruvam. It will not stay.

But arthadam. Arthadam means you can realize your self. That is the greatest achievement, if you can realize your self, whether you are this body or you are soul. That is called self-realization. And as soon as you realize your self... There are many statements in the Vedic literature, that is the distinction between a brahmana and a krpana. These two words are used in Vedic literature. Brahmana means in full knowledge and krpana means who could not utilize the facility of the human form of life. He's called a krpana. Krpana, the exact word -- meaning is "miser." Miser means, if you get some hundred thousands of dollars, if you do not utilize it properly, simply see your money, "I have got this so much money," and be satisfied, then you are a miser. You could not utilize the money. And brahmana means one who utilizes this opportunity of human form of life to the fullest extent and can understand what is God, what is my relationship with Him, how I have come here, why I am subjected to birth, death, old age, and disease. So many things have to be learned.

So the human form of life is meant for that purpose, but there is no facility in the educational institution. Many universities there may be, but not very perfectly well-situated. But we are trying our bid, this Krsna consciousness movement, to give education about this bhagavata-dharma and we are trying to present in so many languages. So we wish that you should cooperate, try to understand this philosophy. We have got books, we have got talks. Any way we can convince you about this philosophy of God consciousness, I hope you'll take advantage of it. Not only that, it is very easy. It is not very difficult. Just like you see all our students, they come from Europe, America. Four or five years ago they did not know what is this bhagavata-dharma, what is this Krsna. Now you can see the result, that all over the world, not only in Europe, but in America, Australia, in Japan, in Canada, everywhere, we have got this type of devotees, and they are understanding what is God, what is our relationship with God. It doesn't matter, God is neither Hindu, Muslim, or Christian -- God is God. So it is the duty of everyone. It is not that only Christians should understand God and the Hindus should understand nobody. No. Any human being. Any living entity in the human form of life must understand. Otherwise, he's missing the opportunity. So we have got to say many things about this thing. In short time, we cannot speak so many things, but we invite you to take advantage of this movement, try to understand the science of God and be benefited. [break]

Girl: ...you cannot change dharma. But love can change dharma.

Hamsaduta: She said that love can change dharma. You say that dharma cannot be changed.

Prabhupada: First of all, you have to understand what is dharma. Dharma, as I have already explained, the order given by God. That is dharma. And what is the order of God? God says that "You surrender unto Me." Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. God says that "You always think of Me," and, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto, "You just become My devotee," and, man-mana bhava, mad-yaji, "You worship Me, and you offer your obeisances." These things we are doing. We are thinking of somebody. Because without thinking you cannot remain. But God says, "You think of Me." You cannot avoid thinking of somebody. Just like a girl is thinking of his lover, a boy, a boy is thinking of his lover. So we must be thinking of somebody. Or in grown-up stage, I am thinking something else, my child, my home. So Krsna says, God says, that "You think of Me." So you have to change your thinking process. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto. And we are already devotees. We are devotees of the country, of the society, of the person, of the president, of the king, so many. God says, that, "You become My devotee." Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto. Mad-yaji: We are worshiping our leader. So God is the supreme leader.

Therefore, this question I put to Professor Kotovsky, that "Your philosophy, Communist philosophy, and our philosophy, where is the philosophically different? Because you have selected a leader, Lenin, and you are worshiping him. And we have selected a leader, Krsna, we are also worshiping Him. So where is the change? How we have advanced? You have selected another leader, that's all. You have to select. So the worship must go on. Either you become Communist or not Communist." So God says that "Instead of worshiping so many others, you worship Me." So, and man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. And "You offer my respect to Me." So these things... You may accept any type of religion; that doesn't matter. But think of God, worshiping God, offering obeisances God, that cannot be changed. Either you become Christian or Hindu or Muslim, it does not matter. These four things cannot be changed. Therefore, the principles of religion: thinking of God, worshiping God, offering obeisances to Him, and to become devotee of God, that cannot be changed. That is real religion.

Hamsaduta: Anyone, anyone?

Guest: But this part of the world "Mahaprabhu" (Address to Prabhupada) is very materialistic, as you know. In Europe we always talk about science and technology. The part of the world that you come from, spiritualism has the highest place. I would like to ask you is there any possible way of a balanced combination between spiritualism and materialism.

Prabhupada: Yes. Actually, there is nothing as materialism. Materialism means forgetfulness of God, that's all. Just like in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh kham mano buddhir eva ca, apara, prakrtir me bhinna astadha [Bg. 7.4]. Materialism means that you are dealing with earth, water, fire, air, or the ether, or mind, intelligence, so far. These are the subject matters of studying materialism. But God says: "They are My separated energies." These matters, you have not produced this earth, water, air, fire. That's a fact. That is produced by the energy of God. So while dealing with material things, if you remember that this material thing is produced by God then you are perfect. And if you theorize that it has dropped from the sky, then you are materialistic. That is the difference between materialist and spiritualist. A spiritualist knows that wherefrom this earth has come, wherefrom the water has come, wherefrom this fire has come. Then he is spiritualist, God conscious. And one does not know, he's ignorant. Actually, that is the fact. But one who is ignorant of the fact, he's materialist. And one who knows the source of this material elements, he is spiritualist. That is the difference. Therefore the conclusion is one who does not know God, he is materialist and one knows God, he is spiritualist.

Hamsaduta: Anyone else, question?

Prabhupada: All right, have kirtana. (end)

"Hog Happiness"

"Hog Happiness"

10 Nov 73 , New Delhi

Prabhupada: Mr. High Commissioner and Ladies and Gentlemen, I thank you very much for your coming here, taking so much trouble, to participate in this Krsna consciousness movement. And I shall simply try to draw your attention about the importance of this movement. Importance of this movement is this, that we do not know what is the aim of life. The modern civilization, all over the world, especially in the Western world -- nobody knows what is the actual problem and what is the aim of life. That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita. The Bhagavad-gita says, "The real problem is janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi-duhkha-dosanudarsanam [Bg. 13.9], that birth, death, old age and disease, these are the problems." If you take birth, then you will have to die. Anyone who takes birth, he must have to die. And so long, between birth and death, there is old age and disease. Actually, these are the problems. So far we are concerned, living entities, every one of us, that is described in the Bhagavad-gita. Na jayate na mriyate va kadacit: "The living entity is never born, never dies." Nityah sasvato 'yam purano na hanyate hanyamane sarire: [Bg. 2.20] "The living entity is eternal, ever-existing and very old, and," na hanyate hanyamane sarire, "it does not die after the annihilation of this body." But the modern civilization, they are thinking that "This body we have got somehow or other, a lump of matter, and so long we have got this body, let us enjoy life, sense gratification." This is atheistic theory.

In our country there were atheists also. Just like Carvaka Muni. According to his philosophy, he says, rnam krtva ghrtam pibet. Because in our country, India, life is enjoyable when we get to eat too much ghee. You see, pakhika anna (?). That is enjoyment. Just like in Western countries, if they can eat, they can drink more, that is life's enjoyment. In our country, of course. So rnam krtva ghrtam pibet. If somebody says that "I have no money," so Carvaka Muni says that "You take loan from your friend and purchase ghee and enjoy life." Rnam krtva ghrtam pibet yavaj jivet sukham jivet. "So long you will live, live happily. Why... Make beg, borrow, steal and live happily." "No. I shall be responsible. I shall have to pay next life." Carvaka Muni says, "No, no. Don't bother about next life." Bhasmi-bhutasya dehasya kuto punar agamano bhavet: "Your body will be burned in the crematorium. That finished. That's all." This foolishness is there, that this life... We do not know that this human form of life we have got by the evolutionary process, going through so many lives. Just like in our present life we can understand that I have come to this body, old body, through child's body, boy's body, youth's body, in this way. That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita. It is not manufactured.

dehino 'smin yatha dehe
kaumara yauvanam jara
tatha dehantara-praptir
dhiras tatra na muhyati
[Bg. 2.13]

You have to accept this, dehantara-prapti, from one body to another. Where is my childhood body? That is gone. Where is my boyhood body? That is gone. Where is my youthhood body? That is gone. Not only for me, for everyone. There is past, present and future. Similarly, when this body will be gone, I will get another body. Where is the difficulty to understand? Tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati [Bg. 2.13]. Dhira. Because we are not sober... There are two classes of men: dhira and adhira. Dhira means sober, thinking, thoughtful, and adhira means restless. So with restless brain, it is difficult, but if you have got sober brain, then there is no difficulty to understand that "I am eternal. I was in the child's body, I was in the baby's body, I was in the boy's body, I was in a young man's body. Now I have got a different body. I am living asmin dehe." Dehino 'smin yatha dehe [Bg. 2.13]. It is very easy to understand, but Krsna says, dhiras tatra na muhyati: "Those who are sober, they can understand."

So people cannot understand. That means the modern civilization is not sober. It is just like cats and dogs. You cannot make a cat and dog sober to understand the philosophy of life. They have degraded so much. That is described in the sastra. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke [SB 10.84.13]. Atma-buddhih, thinking "I am this body." "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am brahmana," "I am black," "I am white," "I am fat," "I am thin," "I am this." No, no. You are not this body at all. That is knowledge. That is knowledge. Knowledge begins when you understand that you are not this body. That is the beginning of knowledge. Otherwise, "I am this body," this knowledge is there in the cats and dogs also. The dog also jumping, because he is thinking, "I am very nice dog," or "Nice cat." So sastra therefore says, yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke [SB 10.84.13]. This body is a bag of three elements -- kapha, pitta, vayu -- according to Ayurveda system. This physiological condition, anatomical condition of this body, is made of kapha, pitta, vayu. So it is a bag of kapha, pitta, vayu, or flesh, bones, blood, urine, stool, and mucus. If you dissect this body, you will find. Do you mean to say combination of these things can make a life, so nice brain? If you are so competent, then take these ingredients, bones, flesh. They are easily available in the slaughterhouse. Make a good brain. But that is not possible. They simply speak, but it is not possible. Therefore this body is not the... Moving spirit soul, that is different. Therefore sastra says, yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih. And as soon as you take this body, that "I am this body," then, in bodily relation... Because a woman has got bodily relation, "She is my wife," and the children born out of the womb of that woman, "That is my children..." Sva-dhih kalatradisu. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih [SB 10.84.13]. Bhauma means the land where we live or where this body is produced. That is worshipable. That is called nationalism. Bhauma ijya-dhih. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih, yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicit. And tirtha, holy place... Just like people go to Vrndavana, Hardwar. Salile. They take birth in the Ganges and the Yamuna, and they think that "Now we have finished our tirtha." No. Tirtha is not that. Tirtha means we have to find out sober person to take instruction from him. So people who are not interested to the sober man and lives like this, that "I am this body, and the bodily production or relation, they are my own men, and if I go to holy place, take bath and then come back..." No. Sastra says, "No." Yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicij janesu abhijnesu. You must approach abhijnah person. That is the meaning of pilgrimage. As the Vedas says, tad-vijnanartham sa gurum eva abhigacchet, srotriyam brahma-nistham [MU 1.2.12]. You must find out a sober man or guru so that he can instruct you, he can deliver you from ignorance of life.

So you'll find in this Bhagavad-gita, when there was talks going on between Arjuna and Krsna, friendly talks... Arjuna was speaking, "Let them enjoy this kingdom. I don't want to fight with my own men." That was his decision. Krsna said, "No, no. This is not your duty. You are a ksatriya. Now you are in the battlefield. You must fight." In this way, ordinary topics were going on. But when Arjuna saw it very difficult to understand, "Whether I shall fight or not fight?" he accepted Krsna as guru. Because he thought that "Friendly talks will not make solution. Let me accept Krsna as my..." Sisyas te 'ham sadhi mam prapannam [Bg. 2.7]. Prapannam: "I surrender unto You. You are my guru. Now You are not my friend; You are my guru." Because a disciple cannot disobey the guru. A friend can disobey. Krsna is asking to fight. As a friend, he was disobeying. But if a guru says that "You must fight," then you cannot disobey. Therefore he accepted, sisyas te 'ham sadhi mam prapannam.

So actually we are all in the ignorance. The same formula:

yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke
sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma idya-dhih
yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicij
janesu abhijnesu sa eva go-kharah
[SB 10.84.13]

Go-kharah. Go means cow and khara means ass. This is the verdict of the sastra, that "If anyone is in the bodily concept of life, he is not better than the animals go and khara, ass and cow." So this ignorance, when this ignorance prevails, that is called dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata. Krsna said, yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata [Bg. 4.7]. When people are become like cats and dogs, the bodily concept of life, and working whole day and night without any spiritual understanding, without the aim of life... So this human life is not meant for that purpose. This is the mistake. It is not that the dogs and cats are eating in a different way. Now we eat in a nice table, in nice plate, and very nicely dressed, and you are eating... But eating process is there. Either you nicely eat or wrongly eat, but you have to fulfill your bell(y) and satisfy your hunger. That is not advancement of civilization. To eat nicely, to sleep nicely, to defend nicely and to have sexual life nicely, that is not advancement of civilization. Ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithunam ca samanyam etat pasubhih naranam. Sexual intercourse with beautiful woman and sexual intercourse with the female dog, the pleasure is the same. That is not advancement of civilization. Advancement of civilization is atma-tattvam. Atma-tattva. That is explained in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Apasyatam atma-tattvam grhesu grha-medhinam. Srotavyadini rajendra [SB 2.1.2]. Maharaja Pariksit asked Sukadeva Gosvami, "Now I am going to die. What is my duty? What I shall hear from?" So at that time Sukadeva Gosvami said, "My dear King," srotavyadini, nrnam santi sahasrasah, apasyatam atma-tattvam grhesu grha-medhinam [SB 2.1.2], that "Those who are grhamedhi..." Grhamedhi means has made the home, country, society, family as the only means of advancement. They are called grhamedhi. But there is another word, what is called grhastha asrama. Asrama. Brahmacari asrama, grhastha asrama, vanaprastha asrama, sannyasa asrama. Asrama. As soon as... Any common man can understand. As soon as we say asrama, there is some spiritual idea. Asrama. Here is a asrama. So grhastha asrama is different, and grhamedhi is different. Grha-medhi means one who does not know what is the ultimate goal of life and living like... Cats and dogs also, they live with their children, wife. They also find out food. They also try to defend, protect. Simply with these ideas, if we live, that is called grhamedhi. Apasyatam atma-tattvam [SB 2.1.2].

Therefore our Vedanta-sutra is there to give enlightenment. As our student Sriman Pradyumna dasa Adhikari said, athato brahma jijnasa, this life is not meant for wasting time like cats and dog. Because after all, we have to give up this life. But before giving up this life, we must gain something. That is described in the Upanisad. Etad viditva yah prayati sa brahmanah. We'll have to die like cats and dogs, but we have got the chance to understand what is the value of life. The cats and dogs have no chance. So simply if we waste our time like cats and dogs and do not know what is the aim of life -- sa krpana. Etad viditva yah prayati, aviditva yah prayati sa krpanah. There are two things: brahmana and krpana. Krpana means miser. A person who got this valuable body... Just like if you get millions of dollars, if you do not utilize it, if you simply see in the treasury that you have got so much money, then you are krpana. It is practical. But if you utilize that money and instead of one crore you make ten crores, then you are called intelligent. Similarly, if we think that "I have got this human form of life, better standard of eating, sleeping and mating," then you remain krpana. You could not utilize it. But if you know in this life, which is possible, "What is the value of this life? What is Brahman? What I am? What is my connection with Brahman? Why I have come here? Where I shall go again? Why I am put into the miserable condition of life? I do not wish to die. Why death is enforced upon me?" this is called brahma-jijnasa, inquiry, "Why?" Therefore there is a Kena Upanisad, "Why?" Unless this "why" inquiry comes in the human body, then he is failure. Parabhavas tavad abodha-jatah yavan na jijnasata atma-tattvam. Whatever we are doing, we are being defeated, because we are doing everything in ignorance. "I am this body." "This is my country." "This is my kinsmen." And in this way I die like cats and dogs.

So Krsna says,

yada yada hi dharmasya
glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthanam adharmasya...
[Bg. 4.7]

Adharmasya. What is that dharma? Krsna says,

paritranaya sadhunam
vinasaya ca duskrtam
dharma-samsthapanarthaya
yuge yuge sambhavami
[Bg. 4.8]

So what is that dharma? Dharma, it is said, dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. Dharma, the simple description of dharma is "the codes which are given by God." It doesn't matter whether you are Hindu, Muslim or Christian or any. Everyone, any civilized man has got some religion. Because dharmena hina pasubhih samanah. If you haven't got no religion... It doesn't matter whether Hindu religion, Muslim religion. You must have some religion. Religion means to understand God. That is religion. Religion does not mean I manufacture something. No. You cannot manufacture religion. Religion means... Just like you cannot manufacture laws. Law is given by the state, by the government. Similarly, religion means the codes, the orders given by God. Therefore you must know what is God, what is His order and how to carry out it. Then you will be success..., your life is successful. Otherwise, just like the cats and dogs, they do not know how to carry out the laws of the state... Of course, they are excused. The "Keep to the right," "Keep to the left," the cats and dogs, they can violate. Law is not meant for the cats and dogs. Law is meant for the human being. Therefore the cats and dogs, if they violate the codes of God, the law of God, they can be excused because they are animals. But a human being, he has got the developed consciousness. If he does not utilize this body for understanding "What is God? What I am? What is my relationship with God? How to act? Wherefrom I have come? Where to go..." There are so many questions. That is called brahma-jijnasa. Athato brahma jijnasa. This life is meant for brahma-jijnasa.

Now, where to jijnasa? That is called Vedic injunction. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum eva abhigacchet [MU 1.2.12]. Tad-vijnanartham. In order to understand that transcendental science, one must have to go to the bona fide guru. And who is guru? Guru is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna. And anyone who represents that Supreme Personality of Godhead, he is guru. Guru means representative of God. Therefore according to Vedic sastra, guru is worshiped like God. This is... Just like my disciples, they have given this seat and..., almost equally with God's seat. That is the injunction. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah **. Guru should be worshiped as God, but guru will never claim that he is God. That is not guru. Guru will always claim that he is servant of God. Because the sisyas worship him as... Sisya... Guru does not say that "You simply worship me." He directs that "You worship God." But because one gets God's connection through guru, therefore guru is worshiped as God. Just like in our country there was viceroy. He was given the same respect as the king because he is representative of..., the royal representative. Similarly, sastra says,

saksad dharitvena samasta-sastrair
uktas tatha bhavyata eva sadbhih
kintu prabhor yah priya eva tasya
vande guroh sri-caranaravindam **

This is the offering obeisance to guru. Guru is described as respectable as the Supreme Personality of God. Acaryam mam vijaniyat [SB 11.17.27]. The Supreme Personality of Godhead says that "Acarya should be accepted as I am. And in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, acaryopasanam. Acaryopasanam. So therefore we have to receive the knowledge in the disciplic succession of acarya. That is also described in the Bhagavad-gita: evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo viduh [Bg. 4.2]. Rajarsayah. This knowledge, they were understood by the rajarsi. Rajarsi means king; at the same time, saintly person. Not the king and robber, dasyu-dharma, imply exacting taxes, "Come on, give me tax, and you go to hell." That is not king. That is not government. It is government's duty to make... The government should be Krsna conscious, and it is government's duty to see that everyone is Krsna conscious or God conscious -- you say "Krsna" or "God"; it doesn't matter. If you think that "Let the people go to hell. It doesn't matter. Bring taxes and let us enjoy, and you go to hell..." It is very horrible condition.

So everywhere this is going on; therefore there is necessity of awakening this God consciousness of the people. It is not a childish thing or sentimental fanaticism. It is real science. Because this human life is meant for understanding "What I am," aham brahmasmi. "I am not this body; I am spirit soul." Brahma-bhutah prasannatma na socati na kanksati [Bg. 18.54]. If you can educate people to become brahma-bhuta [SB 4.30.20], then prasannatma, he becomes happy, jolly. Just like these American boys, American girls, they were many, many times in better condition of life. Now they are wandering with me. What can I give them? I cannot give them nice food. I cannot give them nice shelter. Neither I have money. They are coming. They are all rich men's sons, but they are after me. Why? Brahma-bhutah prasannatma. They have got something. They are feeling obliged that "Bhaktivedanta Swami has given us something." That is... Therefore they are after me. So this is the Brahma cond..., brahma-bhuta atma. Brahma-bhutah prasannatma. That is the sign. "I have become Brahman. I have become Narayana." No. If you are prasanna, if you are always joyful, then it is to be understood that you have realized Brahman. Brahma-bhutah prasannatma na socati na kanksati. There is no socana. Here in the material world I have got something. If I lose it, I cry, "I have lost, I have lost, I have lost." And if I do not possess, then kanksati, "I must get it. I must." These two businesses are going on. But when you become brahma-bhutah prasannatma, these two things will go away. Na kanksati na socati.

And samah sarvesu bhutesu. Samah sarvesu bhutesu: equally seeing all living entities. Panditah sama-darsinah [Bg. 5.18]. Brahma-bhuta means he is learned scholar, aham brahmasmi, self-realized; therefore he has no such distinction that "Give protection to the human being and send the poor animals to the slaughterhouse. Equality." What equality? What the poor animals have done that you are sending them to the slaughterhouse? Is that civilization, this rubbish civilization, maintaining hundreds and thousands of slaughterhouse? So simply speaking "love," "fraternity..." Where is your fraternity? Where is your love? This cannot be possible. This may be big talks only -- but to be understood by the nonsense. Unless you become brahma-bhuta [SB 4.30.20], self-realized, Krsna conscious, God conscious, these things are only stories. It is not possible. This is the description in the Bhagavad-gita.

brahma-bhutah prasannatma
na socati na kanksati
samah sarvesu bhutesu
mad-bhaktim labhate param
[Bg. 18.54]

Then he becomes a devotee. To become devotee is not so easy thing. Not so easy thing. People think that devotion is a sentiment. No. It is not sentiment. It is a great science. It is a great science to become fully satisfied. Fully satisfied. And Krsna says,

bhoktaram yajna-tapasam
sarva-loka-mahesvaram
suhrdam sarva-bhutanam
jnatva mam santim rcchati
[Bg. 5.29]

This is the process of santi. Bhoktaram. Krsna is the enjoyer. We are after worshiping Krsna. That is our business. Wherever we go, we install this Krsna Deity and we work for Krsna, we print books for Krsna, we distribute books for Krsna, we beg everyone to become Krsna's bhakta. Therefore it is Krsna consciousness. We have no other business than Krsna. As Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. We are doing that. We have no other business. Simply Krsna. Why? Krsnas tu bhagavan svayam [SB 1.3.28]. He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Krsna says in the Bhagavata, mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya: [Bg. 7.7] "I am the Supreme."

aham sarvasya prabhava
mattah sarvam pravartate
iti matva bhajante mam
budha bhava-samanvitah
[Bg. 10.8]

Only the learned scholars can worship Krsna. Only the learned scholar, self-realized soul, can understand Bhagavad-gita. Not by the politicians and the so-called scholar. No. It is not possible.

Therefore Krsna consciousness movement is very important movement. We appeal to the sober class, dhira, not the adhira. We also accepting dhira and adhira by the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, by the mercy of the Gosvamis. Dhiradhira. Dhira and adhira. Just like these boys and girls, they were adhira. Now they are dhira. Adhira. Adhira means without any responsibility, doing all nonsense. Actually they are rich nation's sons and daughters. They are doing ev..., but now they have become dhira. "No illicit sex, no meat-eating, no intoxication, no gambling. Yes, sir." This is dhira. You are already intoxicated. You are already illusioned in this material world. If you still go on drinking, where is the possibility of knowledge? You must have sober brain to understand. So this is going on. Therefore my appeal to all the sober men: to understand this Krsna consciousness movement and join it for the benefit of his personal self, for the benefit of his country, for the benefit of the whole human society.

Thank you very much. Hare Krsna. [break]

Prabhupada: Lord Caitanya is Krsna. Krsna said, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. But people did not take it very seriously. Therefore Krsna came as a devotee in the form of Caitanya Mahaprabhu to teach people how to surrender to Krsna. This is the... Krsna, Lord Caitanya is also Krsna. Krsna as the Supreme Person, He demanded that sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja, but people did not take it very seriously. Therefore He again came, how to surrender to Krsna. Just like some servant is massaging your legs, but you do not like it. You sometimes take his leg, "You do like this, do like this, do like this." So that master has not become servant, but he's teaching how to massage. Similarly, Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna Himself, but He is teaching rascals like us how to surrender to Krsna. This is the difference.

British man: No. What I'm trying to ask is that if the Vedic scriptures were written about five thousand years ago...

Prabhupada: Yes.

British man: ...then how is it just only five hundred years ago somebody came to impart what was written five thousand years ago?

Prabhupada: Yes. Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati [Bg. 4.7]. As soon as it becomes too much deteriorated, then Krsna comes Himself or sends His representative to revive Krsna consciousness. It may be five thousand years or five lakhs of years or five days. That doesn't matter. Yada yada hi dharmasya. Whenever there is discrepancy. It doesn't matter. It does not depend on the historical dates. When there is necessity. When there is necessity. Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata. At that time. So although Krsna consciousness was introduced five thousand years ago by Krsna Himself, but it deteriorated. (end)

"Goloka Vrndavana Is Everywhere"

25 Sept 73 , Bombay

Prabhupada: Bhaktivinoda Thakura, the father of sankirtana movement within two hundred years. He was acarya and a householder, grhastha. He was very responsible officer, magistrate, householder. But he was a great devotee. Not only devotee-acarya in the line of Caitanya Mahaprabhu disciplic succession, acarya. So he sung, ye dine grhete bhajana dekhi, grhete goloka bhaya: "The day whenever we find there is bhajana," means worshiping the Supreme Lord, "at that time immediately the house becomes Vaikuntha." Actually, that is so. Vaikuntha or Goloka Vrndavana is not material things. Just like Krsna is not material. Krsna... As Krsna can stay in His abode, Goloka Vrndavana, and still He can stay everywhere... Andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham. That is Krsna.

In the Brahma-samhita it is stated,

eko 'py asau racayitum jagad-anda-kotim
yac-chaktir asti jagad-anda-caya yad-antah
andantara-stha-paramanu cayantara-stham
govindam adi-purusam...
[Bs. 5.35]

Krsna, Govinda, is everywhere by His one plenary portion, which is known as Paramatma. Eko 'py asau racayitum jagad-anda-koti. That Paramatma is situated in every universe, andantarastham. Garbhodakasayi Visnu. As Garbhodakasayi Visnu He is presented in every universe, and as Ksirodakasayi Visnu He is within everyone's heart. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. Not only within the heart of everyone, andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham, He is within the atom. That is Krsna. Similarly, Krsna's place, Goloka Vrndavana, that is also spread everywhere. How that Goloka Vrndavana becomes spread? As soon as there is devotee. Yes. Tatra tisthami narada yatra gayanti mad-bhaktah. Krsna says, naham tisthami vaikunthe na ca yoginam hrdayesu: "I do not stay in Vaikuntha-loka or within the heart of the yogis." Tatra tisthami narada yatra gayanti mad-bhaktah: "I stay there where My devotees are chanting about Me, about My glories." This is the process. Immediately... Goloka eva nivasaty akhilatma-bhutah [Bs. 5.37]. That is Krsna's power, omnipotency, omnipotency. We pray God, "Omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent." So that is fact. God can be present anywhere simultaneously, omnipresent. Similarly, there is no difference between God and His place. Caitanya Mahaprabhu recommended, aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa-tanayas tad-dhama vrndavanam. As Krsna is worshipable, aradhya, similarly His place is also aradhya, worshipable. So as He is all-pervading, similarly, His place is also all-pervading. So how things can be changed into Vaikuntha? That is by chanting the holy name of the Lord. Tatra tisthami narada yatra gayanti mad-bhaktah. So the bhaktas, they are also so powerful that by chanting the holy name of God, they make the supreme all-powerful Lord descend in that place. Therefore the statement of Bhaktivinoda Thakura that ye dine grhete bhajana dekhi, se dine grhete goloka bhaya... So we can change our home also into Vaikuntha. We can change our home. It is not difficult. Because as Krsna can be all-pervading, Vaikuntha is all-pervading. But we have to simply realize it by the authorized process. Everyone, we can change our home into Vaikuntha.

So there is another statement of Bhaktivinoda Thakura that krsnera samsara kara chadi anacara. To turn your home into Vaikuntha is not very difficult job. Simply you have to adopt the method. Krsnera samsara kara chadi anacara. Anacara means sinful activities. You cannot associate with God if you become sinful. That is not possible. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Yesam tv anta-gatam papam: "One who is completely free from sinful life," te dvandva-moha-nirmukta bhajante mam drdha-vratah [Bg. 7.28], "He can worship Me." So therefore our Krsna consciousness movement is that we do not recommend that "You give up your occupation, you become a sannyasi, give up your wife and children." No. That is not our movement. Amongst ourself here there are sannyasis, brahmacaris, grhastha, vanaprastha. Everyone is there. Everyone can worship Krsna. There is no such thing that "This class of men, only the brahmana or the sannyasis or brahmacari or Hindus..." No. Krsna is open for everyone. Mam hi partha vyapasritya ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah [Bg. 9.32]. Even lower born, born in the lower grade family, he is also open. Simply one has to adopt the means. That is recommended by... There are many songs. Locana dasa, Narottama dasa Thakura, he also says,

visaya chadiya kabe suddha ha'be mana
kabe hama herabo sri vrndavana

Visaya means sense enjoyment. Sense enjoyment. So one has to give up this practice of sense enjoyment. Then he becomes purified. There is no prohibition for eating, but there is prohibition of eating things which are rejected, amedhya. Eating is not stopped, but you cannot eat anything which is not accepted by Krsna. That is called anacara. If you eat something which is not accepted by Krsna... Because our life, Krsna consciousness life, means to be always eternal servant of Krsna. As the servant eats the remnants of foodstuff left by the master, similarly, we are servants of Krsna. We also eat, but we eat remnants of foodstuff which is left by Krsna. That is called prasadam, maha-prasadam.

So we have to, I mean to say, mend our life in such a way that krsnera samsara kara, chadi anacara. We have to give up anacara, forbidden things, sinful things. Striyah suna panam dyutam yatra papas catur-vidhah. There are four kinds of sinful activities. Basic principle of sinful life is avaidha, illicit sex life. Avaidha stri-sanga. Striyah suna, unnecessary animal killing. Pana, drinking intoxicant; and gambling. We have to give up these four principles. Then our life becomes pure. If we give up these four principles and chant Hare Krsna mantra, then we become perfect. How it is? You can see the examples. These European, Americans, they were accustomed to all these practices. That is their daily affair. But they have given up this. Now you see, how they are saintly. So the thing is not very difficult, but one has to accept the principles. Then one lifes becomes perfect. They do not know what is perfection of life. People are thinking that material advancement is perfection of life. No. That is not perfection of life. Because even if you make nice material arrangement, you cannot enjoy it. At any time you shall be kicked out. Where is your perfection? Suppose you have very nice apartment, very nice good bank balance, very nice wife, children. Everything is all right. But is there any guarantee that you can enjoy them? Is there any guarantee? At any moment you shall be out. This is not perfection. First of all make guarantee that "Whatever I am preparing for, very happy life in this material world, they will be permanent. I will not be kicked out." Then it is perfection. But there is no such guarantee.

Therefore this is not perfection of life. Perfection of life is that when there is guarantee of no more birth, no more death, no more old age and no more disease. That is perfection. That can be achieved by Krsna consciousness, not by material way. Harim vina na mrtim taranti. If you want to be eternal, blissful, eternally blissful and full of knowledge, sac-cid-ananda-vigraha [Bs. 5.1], then we have to take to Krsna consciousness. There is no other way. There is only way. Mam upetya kaunteya duhkhalayam asasvatam [Bg. 8.15]. If you are serious about perfection of life, then one has to take to this Krsna consciousness. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65], mam evaisyasi asamsayam: "Without any doubt, you shall come to Me." And what is the principle? Man-mana bhava mad-bhakti mad-yaji mam namaskuru. Four things: "Simply always think of Me," man-mana; "you become just My devotee," mad-bhakta; "just worship Me..." So is it very difficult task to think of Krsna and to worship Him, to become His devotee and to offer obeisances to Krsna? Just like we are doing this, in this evening. This is the process. We are thinking of Krsna by chanting Hare Krsna mantra. We are offering obeisances to the Deity and at least trying to become bhaktas. Man-mana bhava mad..., mad-yaji, and worshiping. What is the worshiping? Patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati [Bg. 9.26]. It is not difficult. Little flower, little fruit, little water, anyone can collect. But the thing is a dog obstinacy: "I shall not do it." That is the thing. Otherwise it is very easy thing, Krsna consciousness. And if we adopt it, our life becomes successful. That is the perfection of life. That we are teaching. But there is a dog's obstinacy that they will not adopt: "No." This is our defect. Otherwise the process is very simple; everyone can adopt it in every country, every man. There is no distinction that "This class of men can adopt and that class of men can..." No. Just like the Hare Krsna mantra, it is now being chanted all over the world, and they are becoming Vaisnava. These European, American boys... Then where is the difficulty? But the difficulty is our obstinacy. If one is obstinate, he is determined, then it is very difficult. Therefore Krsna says, na mam duskrtino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah [Bg. 7.15]. Only these classes of men, duskrtina, always engaged in sinful activities, mudha, rascal... Na mam duskrtino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah. And lowest of the mankind. Because human life is meant for worshiping Krsna. Narottama dasa Thakura sings, hari hari viphale, janama gonainu: "My life is spoiled." Why? Manusya-janama paiya, radha-krsna na bhajiya, janiya suniya visa khainu. So we are trying to stop drinking poison knowingly. Visaya visanale, diva-nisi hiya jvale, taribare na koinu upaya, golokera prema-dhana, hari-nama-sankirtana, rati na janmilo kene taya. These are the Narottama dasa Thakura's... Big... They were stalwart acaryas.

So this Krsna consciousness movement is for everyone's benefit. It is the topmost humanitarian movement to make everyone happy, to make everyone immortal, to make everyone peaceful(?), to make everyone... [break] ...without being wise, nobody can surrender to Krsna. Mudhas, rascals, they cannot. Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita, na mam duskrtino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah [Bg. 7.15]. These are the qualification, who does not surrender to Krsna. Duskrtina, naradhama. "Oh, how he is naradhama? He is M.A., Ph.D., D.H.C., T.H.C. How he is naradhama?" Mayayapahrta-jnana: his knowledge has no value because he does not know Krsna. These M.A., Ph.D.'s will not help me. Sankaracarya said, na hi na hi raksati du-krn-karane. "By your grammatical jugglery of words nonsense, you cannot be saved." Bhaja govindam bhaja govindam bhaja govindam mudha-mate: "You rascal, just engage yourself in the loving service of Govinda." This is Sankaracarya's advice, although he was impersonalist. Krsna says that "Who does not worship Me?" Naradhama, mayayapahrta-jnana, they have no knowledge. Because if he remains in the real point a rascal, then what is the value of his knowledge? There is no knowledge. Therefore bahunam janmanam ante jnanavan mam prapadyate [Bg. 7.19]. After many, many births of struggling for existence like this, if one becomes actually wise, jnanavan mam prapadyate, he surrenders to Krsna. This is intelligence. This is intelligence. "Krsna, from this day, I surrender. So long I was forgotten. I did not know that my only business is to surrender to You." So any moment you surrender, immediately you are protected.

sarva-dharman parityajya
mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo
moksayisyami ma sucah
[Bg. 18.66]

"Don't bother. Everything is there." Kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati [Bg. 9.31].

So this is our Krsna consciousness movement. We are trying to make fools and rascals and sinful men to become wise. If you take advantage of it, you will be glorified and we shall be glorified. This is our process. And actually it is happening. Caitanya Mahaprabhu's movement is papi tapi yata chila, hariname uddharila, tara saksi... You want evidence? Jagai and Madhai. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu delivered two Jagai and Madhai. Now you can see how much Caitanya Mahaprabhu's movement is strong. Many thousands of Jagai-Madhai's are being delivered. So His movement is greater than Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Caitanya Mahaprabhu, personally He delivered two Jagai-Madhai. Now, by His movement, thousands Jagai-Madhai's are being... This is the practical. And it is very easy. It is not very difficult. Anyone can take. But if we take knowingly poison, janiya suniya visa khainu, who can protect you? So it is our appeal to everyone that take to Krsna consciousness movement, chant Hare Krsna mantra. Even if you cannot give up your bad habits, sinful activities, still, you take the chanting of Hare Krsna mantra and your life will be glorified.

Thank you very much. [break] (answering question:) It is just like without eating, if you question that how one is satisfied by eating food. A hungry man, if you give him food, he will say, "Yes, I am satisfied." There is no question of "How?" If you eat... If you are hungry, if you eat, you will feel satisfaction. It is automatic. Similarly, if you chant Hare Krsna mantra, then you will understand. Not from outside. How? You can see how these boys and girls, they are feeling satisfaction. Similarly, if you chant also, you will feel satisfaction. There is no question of "How?" It is so, exactly (as) when you are hungry, if you eat, you will feel satisfaction. It is practical. It is stated therefore,

raja-vidya raja-guhyam
pavitram paramam idam
pratyaksavagamam dharmyam
su-sukham kartum avyayam
[Bg. 9.2]

Pratyaksavagamam dharmyam. It is not theoretical. If you practice, you will see, pratyaksavagamam. And it is very easy to perform. So if you chant Hare Krsna mantra, then you will understand. Exactly like that: if you eat, then you will feel satisfaction. Simply theoretically discussing how it become, we can say to you... It will not be understood. You chant, you will understand. Practical. Pratyaksavagamam dharmyam su-sukham kartum avyayam. This is the process. Any other question?

Indian man (1): To make it more clear to me what I feel, that it is something like not realizing that Lord Krsna is the real reason, to chant the name, it will be something like we have instances in the old sastras and books and histories, that...

Prabhupada: What do you mean by old?

Indian man (1): I mean the history, those stories...

Prabhupada: That story, that stories... You do not know the science. Why you are talking like nonsense? What do you mean by old? It is eternal. There is no question. Avyayam. Nityah sasvatah. You do not know.

Indian man (1): Therefore they used to pray to God before they used to go to commit theft, and they used to come back again to worship the God and to please Him that yes, they were not caught.

Prabhupada: So do you think we are dacoits?

Indian man (1): No, but...

Prabhupada: Then what do you think? Why do you question this? Why do you question these nonsense things?

Indian man (1): That praying to God without...

Prabhupada: Yes, he is better than you because you do not know what is God. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita:

api cet su-duracaro
bhajate mam ananya-bhak
sadhur eva sa mantavyah...
[Bg. 9.30]

Who is worshiping God, but his character is not good, he is sadhu. And those who are talking and no connection with God, he is mudha, duskrtina, naradhama. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita. We have to talk through the medium of sastra. It is said, api cet su-duracaro bhajate mam ananya-bhak, sadhur eva sa mantavyah [Bg. 9.30]. He is sadhu, because he has taken, he has come to the right place, bhagavad-bhajan. Ksipram bhavati dharmatma. He will not remain such thief.

ksipram bhavati dharmatma
sasvac-chantim nigacchati
kaunteya pratijanihi
na me bhaktah pranasyati
[Bg. 9.31]

If one has actually taken to Krsna consciousness, he will never be lost, even though you find for the present he is not well-behaved. That is the version of Bhagavad-gita. Even a thief, even a rogue, even a sinful man takes to Krsna consciousness and follows the rules and regulation, for the time being you may find there are some faults, but it will vanish very soon. Just like the electric fan, it is moving. You make the switch off, you will find still moving. But it will stop moving very soon, because the switch is off. Similarly, if anyone takes to Krsna consciousness seriously, if you find that still he is not well-behaved, that is not very important thing. He has taken to Krsna consciousness. That is important thing. Because this superficial external misbehavior will stop. There are many sastras' example.

tyaktva sva-dharmam caranambujam harer
patet tato yadi, bhajann apakva
yatra kva vabhadram abhud amusya kim
ko vartha apto abhajatam sva-dharmatah
[SB 1.5.17]

Krsna consciousness is so nice, even one takes by sentiment, still he is profited. And person who are very honest in executing his duty but does not take to Krsna consciousness, sastra says ko vartha apto abhajatam: "What does he gain?" He does not gain anything, because he is bound up by the resultant action of his karma. So it is a great science. One has to understand. Then... But for the present... Of course, a Krsna-bhakta never takes the profession of a dacoitry. We have no such evidence. Rather, dacoits were made very great devotees. There are instances. But Krsna says, "Even if he is dacoit, but Krsna-bhakta," sadhur eva sa mantavyah [Bg. 9.30], "he is to be considered sadhu." So it is the certificate of Krsna. What can I do? (laughter) [break] Arati. (end)

"Disap. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati"

13 Dec 73 , Los Angeles

Prabhupada:

nama om visnu-padaya
krsna-presthaya bhutale
srimate bhaktisiddhanta
sarasvatiti namine

Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura passed away from this material world on 31st December, 1936. So almost forty years past. So there are two phases, prakata and aprakata, appearance and disappearance. So we have nothing to lament on account of disappearance because Krsna and Krsna's devotee... Not only devotees, even the nondevotees, nobody disappears. Nobody disappears because every living entity... As Krsna is eternal... It is confirmed in the Vedic literature, nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). The description of the Supreme Lord is that He is also nitya, eternal, and the living entities are also eternal. But He is the chief eternal. Nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam. So qualitatively, there is no difference between Krsna and the living entities. And quantitatively, there is difference. What is the difference between nitya, the singular number nitya, and the plural number nitya? The plural number nitya is subordinate, eternal servants of the singular number nitya. Just like if you want to serve somebody, so the master is also exactly like you. He has got two hands, two legs, or the same sentiments. He also eats. Everything is same there. But the difference is the master and the servant. That's all. Otherwise, equal in every respect.

So spiritually, appearance and disappearance, there is no difference. Just like in material point of view, if a person takes birth... Suppose you get a son born, you become very happy. The same son, when passes away, you become very unhappy. This is material. And spiritually, there is no such difference, appearance or disappearance. So although this is the disappearance day of Om Visnupada Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, so there is nothing to be lamented. Although we feel separation, that feeling is there, but spiritually, there is no difference between appearance and disappearance. There is a song, Narottama dasa Thakura's song, ye anilo prema-dhana. Do you know, any one of you? Can you sing that song anyone? Oh. Ye anilo prema-dhana, karuna pracura, heno prabhu kotha gelo. I don't remember exactly the whole song. That is our lamentation, that Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura brought this message to distribute all over... Of course, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu expressed His desire, that

prthivite ache yata nagaradi-grama
sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama

He predicted that "All over the world, as many towns and villages are there, everywhere My name will be known." Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's name. Which is now, attempted now, it is being actually... To execute this will of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He said personally,

bharata bhumite manusya janma haila yara
janma sarthaka kari kara para-upakara
[Cc. Adi 9.41]

He wanted that His name should be broadcast all over the world in every town and village. And who would do it? That He asked that anyone who has taken birth in Bharata-varsa, India, it is his duty: first of all make himself perfect by understanding the philosophy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu; then broadcast it, distribute it. This was the duty of every Indian.

So Indian, especially in India, they have got the privilege to take advantage of the Vedic literature. In other countries there is no such advantage. So if anyone wants to make his life perfect, then he has to take advantage of the vast treasure-house of Indian spiritual knowledge. Even one Chinese gentleman, he has written one book about religion. That is a course in New York University. So he has said that "If you want to know something of religion, then you have to go to India." That's a fact. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that every Indian... There is need of broadcasting this Krsna consciousness movement, all over the world. So it is the duty of every Indian to first of all make his life perfect. He must know... Perfection means he must know what is his position and what he has to do. That is perfection. At the present moment, people do not know what he is even, whether he is this body or something extra. The big, big scientists, they are also failure. This is perfection. First of all one must know what he is, whether he is this body or something beyond this body. This is the beginning of spiritual knowledge. So that advantage is there in India, by culture, by education. Therefore Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu requested that Indians, bharatiya, Bharata-varsa, those who have taken birth as human being... He doesn't speak to the animals. Bharata bhumite manusya janma. Manusya janma means human being. Because without being a human being, nobody can understand these things. The cats and dogs, they cannot understand. So a person whose behavior is like cats and dogs, he also cannot understand. Therefore He said, janma sarthaka kari. First of all make your life perfect and then distribute this knowledge. This is the Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission.

So He simply said, but He was expecting that in later days His followers would do that. So that attempt was made by Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. Bhaktivinoda Thakura, he desired and, that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's message, it should be accepted by East and West equally, and both the Indians and Europeans, Americans, they should dance together in ecstasy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy. That was his desire, Bhaktivinoda Thakura. He simply expressed the desire, "When I shall see this happening, that both the eastern and western people they are united on the basis of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's cult and dancing together in ecstasy?" That was his ambition. That was ambition of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and this was ambition of Bhaktivinoda Thakura. And Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura took up this affair, business, and he wanted first of all.

So every student, any disciple, every disciple, especially those who are competent, he requested that "You take up this mission of Caitanya Mahaprabhu and preach in the western countries. That was Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's first attempt. Before that, even the acaryas, Rupanuga Gosvamis, they left literature, but they did not attempt to preach practically. And Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, he was very, very anxious to preach this Caitanya cult in the western countries. This is Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's special contribution.

So when I met Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura... It is a long story, how I met him. One of my friends, he dragged me. (laughing) (laughter) I was at that time nationalist and manager in a big chemical factory. My age was about twenty-four years. So one of my friends, he asked me that "There is a nice sadhu, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. He has come in Calcutta. So let us go and see." So I was reluctant. I thought just like so, there are so many sadhus. So I was not very much... Because I had very bad experience, not very good. So I said, "Oh these kind of sadhus, there are many." You'll be glad to know that even my in young age or early age -- it was Krsna's grace -- even amongst my young friends, I was considered the leader. (laughing) (laughter) In my school days, in my college days, in my private friendship, some way or other I became their leader. And one astrologer sometimes he read my hand. He said in Hindi, kukum calena(?). Kukum calena means "Your hand speaks that your order will be executed."

Devotees: Jaya!

Prabhupada: So anyway, it was Krsna's grace. I would not go, but their point of view was that unless I certify that sadhu, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, he'll not be accepted. Therefore he dragged me. So I went to see Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura on that day. On the first meeting, just we offer our obeisances. It is the practice. So immediately he began his talking that "You are all educated young men. Why don't you take up Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's cult and preach all over the English knowing public? Why don't you take up this matter?" So I argued with him in so many... At that time I was nationalist. So I told that "Who will accept our message? We are dependent nation. Nobody will care." In this way, in my own way, in these younger days... But we belonged to the Vaisnava family, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Nityananda, Radha-Govinda. That is our worshipable Deity. So I was very glad that "Radha-Krsna cult, Caitanya Mahaprabhu's cult, this sadhu is trying to preach. It is very nice."

So at that time we had some talks, and of course I was defeated by his argument, my argument. (laughter) And then, when we came out, we were offered prasadam, very nice treatment, the Gaudiya Matha. And when I came out on the street, this my friend asked me, "What is your opinion of this sadhu?" Then I said that "Here is the right person who has taken up Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's message, and now it will be distributed."

Devotees: Jaya!

Prabhupada: So I was at that time a fool, but I opined like this. And I accepted him as my spiritual master immediately. Not officially, but in my heart. That was in 1922. Then, in 1923, I left Calcutta on my business tour. And I made my headquarter at Allahabad. Allahabad is about five hundred miles from Calcutta. So I was thinking that "I met a very nice saintly person." That was my thinking always. So in this way, in 1928, there was a Kumbhamela. At that time, these Gaudiya Matha people came to Allahabad to establish a center there, and somebody else said, somebody informed them that "You go to that Prayaga Pharmacy." My drug shop was named as Prayaga Pharmacy. My name was also there. "You go and see Abhaya Babu. He is religiously... He will help you." These Gaudiya Matha people, they came to see me. So "Sir, we have come to you. We have heard your good name. So we want to start a temple here. Please try to help us." And because I was thinking of these Gaudiya Matha people that "I met a very nice, saintly persons," and as soon as I saw them, I was very much engladdened: "Oh, here are these persons. They have come again."

So in this way, gradually, I became attached to these Gaudiya Matha activities, and by the grace of Krsna, my business also was not going very well. (laughter) (laughs) Yes. Krsna says yasyaham anughrnami harisye tad-dhanam sanaih. If somebody wants to be actually devotee of Krsna, at the same time, keeps his material attachment, then Krsna's business is He takes away everything material, so that cent percent he becomes, I mean to say, dependent on Krsna. So that actually happened to my life. I was obliged to come to this movement to take up this very seriously. And I was dreaming that "Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura is calling me, 'Please come out with me!' " (pause) So I was sometimes horrified, "Oh, what is this? I have give up my family life? Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura is calling me? I have to take sannyasa?" Oh, I was horrified. But I saw several times, calling me. So anyway, it is by his grace I was forced to give up my family life, my so-called business life. And he brought me some way or other in preaching his gospel.

So this is a memorable day. What he desired, I am trying little bit, and you are all helping me. So I have to thank you more. You are actually representative of my Guru Maharaja (Srila Prabhupada starts to cry) because you are helping me in executing the order of my Guru Maharaja.

Thank you very much. Chant Hare Krsna. (end)
