Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupadaSrila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada:...Mr. Reddy and Ladies and Gentlemen, I cannot speak in Telugu. Kindly excuse me. This Krsna consciousness movement is very, very old, at least five thousand years old. And if we take history before that, then it is at least forty millions of years old. This Krsna consciousness was spoken by Krsna before the Battlefield of..., Battlefield of Kuruksetra took place. Krsna instructed this same Bhagavad-gita philosophy to the sun-god. He says in the Fourth Chapter,

imam vivasvate yogam
proktavan aham avyayam
vivasvan manave prahur
manur iksvakave 'bravit
 [Bg. 4.1]

sa kaleneha (mahata)
yogo nastah parantapa

So this transcendental science, bhakti-yoga, means to surrender unto the Supreme Lord. This is the simple thing. God is great and we are small. God is prabhu, and we are anu. We have got the God's quality as part and parcel, mamaivamsa jiva-bhutah. Krsna says that "These jivas, they are My part and parcel." So gold mine and gold earring, both of them are gold, but the quantity of gold in the earring and the quantity of gold in the mine is not the same. This is right understanding. There are two classes of philosophers. One is thinking that "I am one with the Supreme" -- monism, or brahma-lina. And the Vaisnava, they are thinking that "We are different from God" -- that is the fact -- "and God is great, and we are very, very small, minute fractional part of God." So bheda abheda. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu summarizes that bheda and abheda both. In quality we are abheda, but in quantity we are bheda. So therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu's philosophy is acintya-bhedabheda-tattva. That is the fact. If I am equal to God or if I am God, then how I have become a dog? So this is a controversial going on. But from Bhagavad-gita, as God explains Himself, He says, mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya [Bg. 7.7]. He is the Supreme. And in the Brahma-samhita described by Lord Brahma, he says,

isvarah paramah krsnah
sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah
anadir adir govindah
sarva-karana-karanam
 [Bs. 5.1]

Krsna also said. The Vedanta says that the Absolute Truth is that from where everything emanates, janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. And Krsna says, aham sarvasya prabhavah: [Bg. 10.8] "I am the origin of everything." Mattah sarvam pravartate, iti matva bhajante mam budha bhava-samanvitah.

So we have to follow mahajana because we are tiny living entities. We cannot speculate. This is nonsense. Speculation is nonsense. Panthas tu koti-sata-vatsara-sampragamyo vayor athapi manaso [Bs. 5.34]. If we speculate we shall never reach the Absolute Truth. That is not possible. But power is very limited. How long I shall speculate? This is called kupa-manduka-nyaya. Just like a frog in the well is informed by his friend, "My dear friend, Mr. Frog, or Dr. Frog, I have seen a big, vast mass of water, Atlantic Ocean." The frog, he has never seen the Atlantic Ocean. So he is speculating, "Atlantic Ocean? The well is three feet round. It may be four feet." "No, no. It is very..." "All right, five feet? Six feet? Ten feet?" So how long he will speculate? There is no comparison. Similarly, the greatness of God we cannot speculate. That is not possible. In the Brahma-samhita it is stated, yasyaika-nisvasita-kalam athavalambya jivanti loma-vilaja jagad-anda-nathah [Bs. 5.48]. Brahma... There are millions of Brahma and millions of brahmanda, and they are coming with the breathing period of Maha-Visnu. Yasyaika-nisvasita-kalam athavalambya jivanti loma-vilaja jagad-anda-nathah visnur mahan sa iha yasya kala-viseso [Bs. 5.48]. That Visnu, Maha-Visnu, who is breathing millions of brahmandas and Brahmas during the breathing period, such Maha-Visnu is also amsa-kala. Svamsa, and then part of svamsa. So govindam adi-purusam tam aham. So it is not possible to understand the nature of God, or Krsna, by our tiny speculation. It is not possible. Therefore Krsna comes down to explain Himself. Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata [Bg. 4.7]. This is dharmasya glani, godlessness. This is called dhar... Everyone is dependent. In the modern civilization, especially in the Kali-yuga, everyone is dependent, but he is thinking that he is independent. That is the folly. In minute to minute, step to step, he is completely dependent. But still he is thinking, "Independent." He is speculating independently to understand what is God. So especially mandah sumanda-matayo manda-bhagya [SB 1.1.10]. This Kali-yuga they are very slow or bad, manda. And sumanda-matayo, and they accept some "ism." Sumanda-matayo. And create some mat, matavadi. But this will not help us. We must know that we are dependent. We are dependent on the laws of material nature, and the material nature is working under the direction of Krsna.

mayadhyaksena prakrtih
suyate sa-caracaram
hetunanena kaunteya
jagat viparivartate
 [Bg. 9.10]

So these things are there. Unfortunately, we do not take care of it. Bhagavad-gita, I think, throughout the whole world, at least in India, in every house, every home, there is Bhagavad-gita. But we do not understand Krsna. This is our misfortune. This is our misfortune. This is dharmasya glani, that Krsna explaining, the sastra explaining that krsnas tu bhagavan svayam [SB 1.3.28], but we do not understand. And mandah sumanda-matayo [SB 1.1.10]. This is due to misfortune. Manda-bhagya hy upadrutah. So our this Krsna consciousness movement is a tiny little attempt to convince people that "You are searching after God. Take. Here is God, Krsna. Take His address. Take His father's name. Take His mother's name. Why you are searching? Here is God." This is our mission. So we haven't got to manufacture anything, because every information is there in the Bhagavad-gita. And especially Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He has explained. What is Krsna, He has explained. And Krsna has explained. Then where is the difficulty to understand God? There is no difficulty.

So Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission... We are carrying out the mission of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. What is the mission of Caitanya Mahaprabhu? Caitanya Mahaprabhu wants that people are suffering for lack of God consciousness, so preach God consciousness all over the world. (aside:) Don't talk. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, especially to the Indians, He says,

bharata-bhumite manusya-janma haila yara
janma sarthaka kari' kara para-upakara
 [Cc. Adi 9.41]

Bharata-bhumi, those who are born in India, their business is to do welfare activities throughout the whole world, because the whole world is in darkness about understanding the Supreme Person with whom we have got very intimate relationship because we are part and parcel. Just like your son is part and parcel of your body. Somehow or other, if he forgets and goes out of home, you are anxious to see that your son comes back. A son may have become mad. So similarly, Krsna, He is the son of... Krsna is the father of all living entities. Sarva-yonisu kaunteya sambhavanti murt..., aham bija-pradah pita: [Bg. 14.4] "I am the seed-giving father." So Krsna is very, very anxious to take us back to home, back to Godhead. This is Krsna's desire. Therefore He comes personally, He sends His representative, He leaves behind Him Bhagavad-gita, so we can take advantage and go back to home, back to Godhead. That is our real happiness. Any man who is wandering in the foreign countries without any shelter, without any security, his happiness is when he goes back to home, back to Godhead.

So we living entities, we are here in this material world. We are loitering in different bodies. Tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. Now I am Indian or American. I am very great leader, Indian leader or American. Next moment I may become a dog or cat. Tatha dehantara-praptih. Dehantara-praptih is absolute. There is no question of... Karmana daiva-netrena jantor deha upapatti [SB 3.31.1]. As we are working, creating a mentality -- just like if I am infecting some disease, then I have to suffer from that disease -- so similarly, this material world is consisting of three modes of nature, sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna, and mixed. So we are infecting according to our activities. The first-class position is to become a qualified brahmana. Samo damo satyam saucam titiksa arjavam, jnanam vijnanam astikyam brahma-karma svabhava-jam [Bg. 18.42]. So that is the best quality. And next the ksatriya quality, next the vaisya quality... Catur-varnyam maya srstam [Bg. 4.13]. So according to the infection of different qualities, we are preparing the next body, karmana daiva-netrena [SB 3.31.1]. This is karma. You work as a brahmana, you work as a ksatriya, svakarma, according to your capacity, quality. Catur-varnyam maya, guna. These guna... As we are associating with the qualities and acting, then we are creating a body next life. So next life, tatha dehantara-praptih... [Bg. 2.13]. As we pass from one form of body even in this life, from childhood to boyhood, boyhood to youth-hood, youth-hood to old age... Krsna begins His instruction with this point, that we must know what we are. We are not this body. If we remain in the bodily concept of life, then we are no better than cats and dogs. Sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13].

yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke
sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih
yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicit
janesu abhijnesu sa eva go-kharah
 [SB 10.84.13]

So India especially, we have got so much advantages, so many Vedic literatures, and instruction by Krsna, instruction by Vyasadeva, Sukadeva Gosvami. So we can very easily make our life perfect. In other countries they cannot. They haven't got the advantage. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is that those who are born in India, special privilege, they should take advantage of this infallible experience of the great sages, saintly persons, even by God personally. Why you should neglect this? Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore said that "Make your life perfect. Take very seriously the instruction of the Vedic literature, and understand the position and preach this cult all over the world." That is para-upakara, not that "I have understood that I am not this body, aham brahmasmi." No. You preach how you are brahmasmi, how you can remain in the Brahman platform. Simply understanding will not do, theoretical. Jnanam vijnanam. This theoretical knowledge is good, but there must be practical application. Then it is... Then it will stand. Therefore in the Bhagavad-gita it is said,

brahma-bhutah prasannatma
na socati na kanksati
samah sarvesu bhutesu
mad-bhaktim labhate param
 [Bg. 18.54]

That means simply to understand that "I am Brahman" will not endure. You must keep yourself as Brahman in the Brahman platform. And what is that? Mad-bhaktim labhate param [Bg. 18.54]. You must act as a Brahman. That is mad-bhakti, Krsna said. And in another place Krsna says,

mam cavyabhicarini
bhakti-yogena yah sevate
sa gunan samatityaitan
brahma-bhuyaya kalpate
 [Bg. 14.26]

That is... After Brahman stage... Brahmeti paramatmeti bhagavan iti sabdyate [SB 1.2.11] -- Absolute Truth.

So if you simply come to the Brahman stage, param pada, that will not endure. There is every chance of falling down. Just like you go in the sky in eighteen thousand miles per hour, and so on, so on. Just like these people are trying to go to the moon planet. If you get shelter in moon planet or any other planet, then you will be able to stay. Otherwise, come back again. They are coming back. They are going... It is well advertised they are going to the moon planet. Then why they are coming back? Why you should come back? So the idea is that simply in the Brahman, impersonal stage... Just like sky, nirvisesa. You can go eighteen miles, eighteen thousand miles speed, but if you don't get a shelter, then you'll have to come back again. This is the risk. So you must get shelter. So the Bhagavata therefore advises that aruhya krcchrena param padam tatah patanty adho anadrta-yusmad-anghrayah [SB 10.2.32]. You can go very high in the sky, but if you don't get any shelter in any other planet... So similarly, you can make your spiritual progress understanding of Brahman, but if you do not get any shelter at the lotus feet of Krsna, then you'll fall down. That is a fact. We have seen many sannyasis. They give up this material world, that brahma satyam jagan mithya. Then, after some years, he comes down again this mithya jagat to open schools and hospitals. And if this world is mithya, then why you are interested with the schools and hospitals? That means they could not get any Brahman realization. They again come to taste. So therefore sastra says, aruhya krcchrena param padam [SB 10.2.32]. One can rise up to the param pada, brahma pada, but patanty tatah. Aruhya krcchrena param padam tatah patanty adho. Adho means this material world. Why? Anadrta-yusmad-anghrayah. They could not take shelter at the lotus feet of Krsna, the Supreme. Brahmano 'ham pratistha. Yasya prabha prabhavato jagad-anda-koti [Bs. 5.40]. This Brahman is the rays of the body of Krsna, just like the sunshine is the rays of the sun-god, the sun planet.

So unless we come to the point of taking shelter at the lotus feet of Krsna, our life is imperfect. Therefore Krsna comes. He says ultimately that "My dear Arjuna, because you are My very dear friend, I am giving you the most confidential knowledge." What is that? Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. This is most confidential. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is the same because Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna Himself. Krsna reminded that sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja, but the duskrtina mudha naradhama, they could not understand it. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu came again as a devotee of Krsna to teach how to take shelter of Krsna's lotus feet. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu says that -- His mission is especially to the Indians, those who are born in India -- that amara ajnaya guru hana tara ei desa [Cc. Madhya 7.128]. This instruction was given in South India when Caitanya Mahaprabhu was traveling in South India. So many people... He was attractive, and... "Sir, take me with You. Sir, take me with You." He traveled in the villages, villages, very extensively. Especially He traveled in South India. So at that time this instruction was given to some South Indian brahmana: "My dear sir, better stay here. Don't come with Me. You try to preach My philosophy. You haven't got to come with Me." So He said, amara ajnaya guru hana, that "Why you want to come with Me? My mission is this. If you want to help Me, then you become a guru under My instruction. You become a guru." "Sir, I have no education. I am not a brahmana. I am this. I am that. How can I become guru?" So Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, amara ajnaya guru hana tara ei desa: [Cc. Madhya 7.128] "Where you are living, you just try to deliver them. But you become a guru." "How I shall become?" Yare dekha tare kaha krsna upadesa: "Simply you instruct what Krsna has said, that's all. Then you become guru. You don't require any other qual..." "No, I am not a brahmana; I am sudra, I am this or..." That is also all right, because He said to Ramananda Raya when... He was sudra. He was talking with Caitanya Mahaprabhu but he was very learned devotee. So he was feeling hesitation that "Caitanya Mahaprabhu's coming from very high-grade brahmana, and He is sannyasa. His position is very exalted. I am a sudra. How I can advise Him?" He was questioning, and Ramananda Raya was answering. So the answer-giver is in superior position, so he hesitated. So while he was hesitating, Caitanya Mahaprabhu encouraged him,

kiba sudra kiba vipra nyasi kene naya
yei krsna-tattva-vetta sei guru haya
 [Cc. Madhya 8.128]

He said, "It doesn't matter whether you are a brahmana or a sudra or... These are all bodily conception of life. You become above the bodily conception of life. You simply try to understand Krsna." Yei krsna-tattva-vetta.

To understand Krsna is not so easy thing.

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascid vetti...
 [Bg. 7.3]

It is not so easy, but it can be very easy, provided we take this bhakti-marga. Bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah [Bg. 18.55]. Very easy. And what is bhakti? Bhakti is man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. Four things: "Always think of Me," Krsna says. Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. You can think of Krsna. Where is the difficulty? It doesn't require that you have to pass your Ph.D. examination; then you can think of Krsna. No. Anyone, even a child, can think. Man-mana. And who can concentrate on Krsna unless he is a devotee? So man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji: "You worship Me." Mam namaskuru. "By executing these four principles of life you will come back to Me" -- mam evaisyasi asamsayah [Bg. 18.65] -- "without any doubt." So it is not at all difficult. Had it been difficult... I am collecting my disciples throughout the whole world, and we condemn them according to our... "They are mlecchas, yavanas." Maybe they are mlecchas, yavanas, but Sukadeva Gosvami said that even mlecchas-yavanas, they can be purified.

kirata-hunandhra-pulinda-pulkasa
abhira-sumbha yavanah khasadayah
ye 'nye ca papa yad-apasrayasrayah
sudhyanti...
 [SB 2.4.18]

They can become purified by Krsna consciousness.

So we are suffering in this material world on account of forgetting Krsna. This is the root cause, forgetting Krsna. Krsna says, "I am the seed-giving father of everyone," and we have forgotten Krsna. We have forgotten our father. This is the disease. So in order to cure this disease, to awaken them to Krsna consciousness is the best welfare activity in the world, para-upakara. Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is that. Janma sarthaka kari' kara para-upakara. India's mission is not that we colonize in other country and exploit them and bring money and become a lord. No. India's mission is how to revive Krsna consciousness throughout the whole world. That is India's mission. Revive Krsna con... Revive your Krsna consciousness, be fixed up in Krsna, and then distribute this knowledge. This is Indian mission. So it was... Caitanya Mahaprabhu has entrusted this missionary work to everyone. Bharata-bhumite manusya-janma haila yara [Cc. Adi 9.41]. So there is good field for Krsna consciousness. They want it. They are reading our Krsna conscious books very nicely. We are selling not less than 100,000 worth books daily. They are purchasing. So I wish that in India people should take advantage of this Krsna consciousness movement and be... Every one of you should become Krsna consciousness and go to the outside countries and preach this. Krsna consciousness means Bhagavad-gita. Krsna consciousness does... You haven't got to manufacture something by your fertile brain, speculating. That is useless, nonsense. Simply you take what Krsna has said and preach it. You become a guru and you deliver the whole world.

Thank you very much. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Take a test

Pradyumna: (reading) "The basic principle of the living condition is that we have a general propensity to love someone. No one can live without loving someone else. This propensity is present in every living being. Even an animal like a tiger has this loving propensity, at least in a dormant stage, and it is certainly present in the human beings. The missing point, however, is where to repose our love so that everyone can become happy. At the present moment, the human society teaches one to love his country or family or his personal self, but there is no information where to repose the loving propensity so that everyone can become happy."

Prabhupada: Yes. This point is missing. We cannot... It is not possible that we can approach everyone and offer our loving service. Just like people are very much attracted by the humanitarian services. They take it very great, loving service to the human society. But however you may love... Suppose in the beginning one loves his own self, his own body... Just like a child. He loves for himself. Anything he gets, he wants to eat. Own sense gratification. Then, as he grows, he shares his foodstuff with his little brother and sister. Then, as he grows, he loves his mother, his father, then other friends. In this way, as we go, we can love our society, our community, or nation, or internationally, all human beings. But still it is imperfect. Still it is imperfect. It is not all-inclusive. Just like at the present moment, every country, they are national, they consider the human being as national, not the animals. But actual meaning of "national" means anyone who takes birth in that country. In Sanskrit word it is called praja. King, and..., the, the raja, and praja. Praja means who takes birth, prajayate. Anyone who takes birth in that country, in that kingdom, he's called praja. So it is the duty of the king to give protection all prajas. Not that only human beings or my brother or my sister, and not the animals -- not the cows, not the goats, not the chickens. No. They're also praja. But because there is no Krsna consciousness, they think that praja means only the human beings. That's all. Imperfect knowledge.

But when one becomes Krsna conscious, he loves everyone. Because his connection with Krsna... Krsna says, sarva-yonisu kaunteya sambhavanti murtayah yah: [Bg. 14.4] "All forms of living entities, all species of life, their mother is this material nature, and I am the seed-giving father." That is real humanity. Samah sarvesu bhutesu.
brahma-bhutah prasannatma

na socati na kanksati
samah sarvesu bhutesu
mad-bhaktim labhate param
 [Bg. 18.54]

If one does not see equally to all living entities, panditah sama-darsinah... [Bg. 5.18]. That is pandita. It is not pandita that "Only my brother is good, my father is good, and all are bad." That is not pandita. That is sectarianism. That is sectarianism. Pandita...

vidya-vinaya-sampanne
brahmane gavi hastini
suni caiva sva-pake ca
panditah sama-darsinah
 [Bg. 5.18]

So that means at the present moment all the leaders, they're fools and rascals. They are simply sectarian. "I am good. My brother is good. My father is good. All others bad." That's all. Nationalism, communism, these are going on. But a Krsna-bhakta, he does not see like that. He does not like to kill even an ant. That Mrgari, he was a hunter. He was killing animals half-dead. And he met Narada Muni, so he became a Vaisnava. And when he became a Vaisnava, he was not prepared to kill even an ant -- the same hunter, who was killing other animals half-dead, and he was taking pleasure. So this partiality is not in Vaisnava. Patitanam pavanebhyo vaisnavebhyo namo namah. Vaisnava, he's a friend. Suhrdam sarva-bhutanam sadhavah sadhu-bhusanam.

titiksavah karunikah
suhrdah sarva-bhutanam
ajata-satravah santah
sadhavah sadhu-bhusanam
 [SB 3.25.21]

Sadhu, devotee, he is friend for everyone. Suhrdam... As Krsna is friend of everyone,... Krsna says,

bhoktaram yajna-tapasam
sarva-loka-mahesvaram
suhrdam sarva-bhutanam...
 [Bg. 5.29]

Similarly, His representative is also friend for everyone. As Krsna comes, descends to reclaim all fallen souls back to home, back to Godhead, similarly His representative, devotee, he also approaches everyone, tries to get him back to home, back to Godhead. Suhrdam sarva-bhutanam. Even to the animals... Caitanya Mahaprabhu delivered a dog. Caitanya Mahaprabhu's party was going to Jagannatha Puri. A dog was follow, following. So that dog was delivered because he followed the devotees. There are many instances like that. What is this? Read it.

Pradyumna: "At the present moment, the human society teaches one how to love his country or family or his personal self..."

Prabhupada: Yes. We have got a propensity to love, but we do not know, do not know how our love can be perfect. That we do not know. That perfection is possible when you love Krsna. Acyutejya. Sarvarhanam acyutejya.

yatha tarormula-nisecanena
trpyanti tat-skandha-bhujopasakhah
pranopaharac ca yathendriyanam
tatha(iva) sarvarhanam acyutejya

They're, this secret, they do not know. But factually that is the fact. Just like we are in this old age, we are wandering all over the world to see that "Let everyone become happy by Krsna consciousness." It is not that we love only our countrymen, only Hindus, or Bengalis, or Madrasis, or... No. We love everyone, even the animals. But because human beings can understand the Krsna philosophy, therefore we hold meetings of the human beings. But still, whenever we get opportunity, we give protection to the animals. We give them prasadam. We do not prohibit even some animal comes to hear. They also hear some, sometimes. The hear, hearing is there. Everyone can hear. Even they do not understand what is Hare Krsna, if you chant loudly Hare Krsna, even the ants and insect who is hearing, he'll be delivered, because it is spiritual vibration. It will act for everyone. We... Just like fire. The fire will act, either you are human being or insect. If you touch fire, it will do its work. Similarly, Hare Krsna maha-mantra is transcendental vibration. When we chant loudly, anyone who hears -- it doesn't matter whether he's man, animal, tree, insect -- anyone who will hear, he'll get profit. This is transcendental vibration. Just like when there is... Not to speak of this transcendental vibration, even the vibration of cloud, that is also Krsna. Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita: sabdah khe paurusam nrnam. Raso 'ham apsu kaunteya prabhasmi sasi-suryayoh [Bg. 7.8]. So animal has no realization that "Here is Krsna," but a human being, after attending sat-sanga, devotee's, association of the devotees, he can understand: "Oh, here I am drinking water. Now in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, raso 'ham apsu kaunteya. So this taste of water is Krsna." He remembers immediately Krsna. That means he immediately associates with Krsna. This is the process. Either you remember... Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam, arcanam vandanam dasyam [SB 7.5.23]. Any way, when you hear about Krsna, you are associating Krsna. You are chanting about Krsna. You are associating with Krsna. You are remembering, smaranam, that is also Krsna.

So Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita, raso 'ham apsu kaunteya. He's teaching how to become Krsna conscious. It's not difficult at all. He says... Everyone drinks water. Who can say that "I do not drink water"? Then, then why you have not seen Krsna? Krsna says, raso 'ham apsu kaunteya [Bg. 7.8]. So as soon as you taste, you understand what is Krsna. What is the difficulty? If you try to understand Krsna in this easy way, gradually Krsna consciousness will develop.

nitya-siddha krsna-bhakti sadhya kabhu naya
sravanadi-suddha-citte karaye udaya

Krsna consciousness is there in everyone's heart, because everyone is part and parcel of Krsna. Just like part and parcel of gold is gold. There may be some dusty cover, but it has to be cleansed. That's all. Then it becomes gold. Similarly, everyone is Krsna conscious. But on account of his association with matter, he, he's thinking that he's different from Krsna. Otherwise every one of us... Mamaivamso jiva-bhutah [Bg. 15.7]. Everyone is Krsna's part and parcel. Part and parcel of Krsna means part and parcel of gold. As you understand part... A little drop of sea water, it is also, contains the same ingredients. Similarly, we have also got the same ingredients, as Krsna has got. The difference is He's big. Anor aniyan mahato mahiyan. We are small, particle.

So Krsna consciousness is our natural... There is. But, at the present moment, on account of our association with maya, the material energy, we have forgotten Krsna. Krsna bhuliya jiva bhoga-vancha kare. That forgetfulness is manifested by our desire to enjoy this material world. Bhoga-vancha. Everyone is trying to enjoy this material world to his best capacity. That is called material world. Only the Krsna conscious persons, they are not trying to enjoy this material world, but they are trying to dovetail everything in the service of the Krsna. That is the difference. Anasaktasya visayan yatharham upayunjatah. Just like we eat Krsna prasadam. Everyone is eating. We are also eating. But we don't eat directly. Whatever we prepare, whatever we collect, first of all we offer to Krsna. Because we think, we think -- and it is a fact -- the thing is of Krsna's. Krsna has given. You cannot manufacture rice, dhal or wheat in your factory, neither fruit, nor milk. It is given by Krsna. Eko bahunam vidadhati kaman. He's giving. One has to acknowledge, "Yes, it is given by Krsna. It is Krsna's. So let me offer it first of all to Krsna, then take the prasadam." This is Krsna consciousness. Where is the difficulty? Everyone can do it. But they'll not do it. They'll satisfy the tongue. That is forbidden. Ye pacanty atma-karanat, bhunjate te agham papam [Bg. 3.13]. So if you are eating, eating simply sin, how we can be happy? We have to suffer. Bhunjate te agham papam ye pacanty atma-karanat. So who is cooking for Krsna? Nobody's cooking. Except a Krsna's devotee, nobody's cooking. He's pacanty atma-karanat. He's thinking, "Now this sandesa, rasagulla, puri and meat and chicken, I shall eat very voraciously." So you are, he's eating sinful, sins, all sins. Agham papa. And he has to suffer. He has to suffer. Therefore people are suffering. Without Krsna consciousness, everyone must suffer. That is the laws of nature. Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14]. You cannot avoid it. Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te [Bg. 7.14]. Only you can be happy when you are a surrendered soul to Krsna. That is the only way. Harim vina na mrtim taranti.

So we have got this loving propensity, but we do not know how to love and where our loving propensity should be reposed. That we do not know. That is Krsna. People... The same example. Just like if you water in the root of tree, then the water is distributed all over the branches, leaves and flowers and everywhere. If you put foodstuff in the stomach, the energy's distributed all over the body. Everyone can understand this. There are... Krsna is the root. Aham sarvasya prabhavo [Bg. 10.8]. Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. He's the root. But we are neglecting the root. We are trying to pour water in the leaves. The leaf will dry, and his labor will be frustrated. That is happening. So-called humanitarian service, social service, without any touch with Krsna... Just like watering on the tree without touching the root -- it is useless labor. Similarly, you do whatever service you can do to the society, to the community, to the nation, but do it in Krsna consciousness. Then you're perfect. Otherwise it will remain imperfect. The persons who are, whom you are giving service, they'll never be happy, neither you'll be happy. So this is Krsna consciousness movement, that they're simply wasting their time. Srama eva hi kevalam [SB 1.2.8]. Simply wasting their time in so-called humanitarian service. They must take... Nirbandhe krsna-sambandhe. Everything should be in relationship with Krsna.

anasaktasya visayan
yatharham upayunjatah
nirbandhah krsna-sambandhe
yuktam vairagyam ucyate

The simple process. First of all, try, try to understand Krsna and try to love Him. Your love will be distributed, not only in your family and community, but throughout the whole world. All animals, all insects, all trees. You'll never be inclined to do harm, even to an ant even. A tree is cut down -- a Krsna-bhakta becomes sorry. Others, they do not become sorry. They are so sympathetic. Nowadays, trees are being cut into pieces without any consideration. This is also sinful activities. They're also living entities. You cannot kill them unnecessarily. This is the law of nature. Go on.

Pradyumna: "But there is no information where to repose the loving propensity so that everyone can become happy."

Prabhupada: Yes. If the whole society takes to Krsna consciousness, everyone will be happy. If the government men, the politicians, they become Krsna conscious... But it is very difficult. As soon as they become Krsna conscious, they'll not be able to do all these heinous activities. So it is very difficult, but the fact is this, that... Just like Yudhisthira Maharaja, when he was king, people were so happy that even there was no extreme cold and extreme heat. Neither they were any disturbed with anxieties. These are stated in the Bhagavata. If the king, if the government men, they become devotee, then automatically the prajas will be happy. Why they are hankering after Rama-rajya? Because the head of the kingdom is the purest. So in a, in our Bengali language, it is said that if the king is sinful, the whole kingdom becomes lost. And if in the family, if the housewife is sinful, then the whole family becomes lost. It is a common saying. So the difficulty is that nobody... We are grudging against government. So many complaints we have got. But there is no question of grudging against government; because we are not Krsna consciousness, Krsna conscious, therefore we are electing our representatives, fools and rascals. How we can expect good government? You become Krsna conscious, you elect your representative, Krsna conscious, and the government will be all right. You'll be happy. Go on.

Pradyumna: "That missing point is Krsna, and The Nectar of Devotion teaches us how to stimulate our original love for Krsna and how to be situated in that position where we can enjoy our blissful life."

Prabhupada: Yes. Without being Krsna conscious, there cannot be blissful life. If, if... You may rest assured. You may try in so many ways. Andha yathandair upaniyamanah. Leaders may try. It will not be possible. Take, for example, in India. We thought, "If the Britishers go away, so, then we'll be happy. There will be no Hindu-Muslim riots. There will be..." So many things we conjectured. "It will be Rama-rajya." But what is the Rama-rajya? Now everything there is fight. Now there is no Hindu-Muslim riot. Now Andhra and other provinces, they're fighting. So fighting will remain, unless we are Krsna conscious. Go on.

Pradyumna: "In the primary stage a child loves his parents, then his brothers and sisters. And as he daily grows up, he begins to love his family, society, community, country, nation or even the whole human society. But the loving propensity is not satisfied even by loving all human society. That loving propensity remains imperfectly fulfilled..."

Prabhupada: When Vyasadeva finished his all scripture writing, all the Vedas, Puranas, even Brahma-sutra, he was not happy. He was not happy, and his spiritual master, Narada, came, inquired: "Why you are not happy? You have done so much work." So he could not explain. He said, "I, I do not find why I am unhappy. But because you are my spiritual master, you can say." So he indicated that "Because you did not describe about the Supreme Personality of Godhead, therefore you are not happy. Now you try to describe the Supreme Personality of Godhead, particularly." And therefore he wrote this Srimad-Bhagavatam. You'll find this in the Third Chapter of the First Canto. Hmm.

Pradyumna: "But that loving propensity is not satisfied even by loving all of human society." Oh. "That loving propensity remains imperfectly fulfilled until we know who is the supreme beloved."

Prabhupada: Yes. Supreme beloved, Krsna. Supreme Person, supreme beautiful, supreme rich, supreme famous, supreme wise. Everything supreme. We love somebody, or, out of these six opulences, if one opulence is there... Suppose one man is very rich and charitable, we love him. And... Just think over how Krsna is rich and how He's charitable. He is giving His charity, He's distributing foodstuff, millions and millions of living entities every day. We are taking prou..., pride if we can feed, say, hundred, two hundred, five hundred, two thousand. But just imagine. Eko bahunam vidadhati kaman. There are millions and millions of elephants all over the universe; Krsna is supplying their food. There are so many animals. How they're getting food? So many birds. How they can...? Actually there is no scarcity of food. The scarcity of food is for the human society, or the animals who live with them. Because actually the human society is misusing the advanced consciousness; therefore they are put into the trouble. At the present moment, there is scarcity of water all over India, and so many things are being restricted. But in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, yajnad bhavati parjanya. So they are not performing yajnas. So this is nature's restriction. We have got this information. They are not performing yajnas. They, they think by science, by electricity, by this and that, shall provide everything. But then the electricity is being also reduced, supply of electricity is being controlled. And one after, one after another, one after another... Because the supreme controller, if He does not sanction, your so-called scientific improvement or so-called social service will not make the whole world satisfied. That is not possible. That is not possible. This secret is known to the devotees. Yes?

Pradyumna: "Our love can be fulfilling, can be fully satisfied only when it is reposed in Krsna."

Prabhupada: Yes.

Pradyumna: "This theme is the sum and substance of The Nectar of Devotion, which teaches us how to love Krsna in five different transcendental mellows."

Prabhupada: Yes. Our whole Krsna consciousness movement is to teach people how to love Krsna.

sa vai pumsam paro dharmo

 [SB 1.2.6]

Yayatma suprasidati. So this is the propaganda of Krsna consciousness movement. That will solve all problems, and people will be happy, things will change. That is Krsna consciousness movement.

Thank you ver... [break]

Woman devotee: ...Krsna is like the sun at six-thirty...?

Prabhupada: Huh?

Devotee: The sun at six-thirty in the morning?

Prabhupada: Yes, yes.

Devotee: So Krsna appears and performs His pastimes and then He disappears and then appears in another universe? Or He appears...?

Prabhupada: Krsna does not appear or disappear. Krsna is always present, but we see at a certain period. Just like the sun. Sun is always in the sky, but when it is daytime, we see, and at nighttime, we cannot see. At nighttime, because we cannot see, it does not mean there is no sun. It is our imperfectness of eyes, we cannot see. Similarly, Krsna is always present. One who has got eyes, he can see. When all the circumstances favorable, he can see. Krsna is always... Premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santah sadaiva hrdayesu vilokayanti [Bs. 5.38]. Dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena manasa pasyanti 'yam yoginah [SB 12.13.1]. So Krsna can be seen always, if we have got eyes to see. That eyes, how you can be transferred? Premanjana-cchurita. When it is smeared with the ointment of love, then with these eyes you can see Krsna. Krsna is always there. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. He's represent everywhere. Andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham [Bs. 5.35]. Krsna is not absent. Krsna is always there. We haven't got eyes to see Him. So we have to prepare the eyes. Sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam tat-paratvena nirmalam [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. When you make your eyes nirmala, when you give up all these titular designations -- "I am Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am Christian," "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am black," "I am white..." These are all designations. When you give up, become brahma bhutah prasannatma [Bg. 18.54] -- "I am nothing of this; I am eternal servant of Krsna" -- when you come to this consciousness, you will see Krsna. Krsna is always there. [break] ...Krsna. A devotee's seeing factual Krsna, and nondevotee's seeing a brass doll. That's all. Krsna is here. Why they say, "Where is your Krsna?" Here is Krsna. Just like Hiranyakasipu, he challenged Prahlada Maharaja, "Where is your Krsna? All right, let me kill you. Let your God come and protect you." So the atheist class, they say like that. But one who has got training in Krsna consciousness, he has got eyes to see Krsna always. If here is not Krsna, then all the acaryas, they installed Deity in so many millions of temples, they're all fools and rascals? They ask us to worship some stone and wood? No. Krsna is there, but we haven't got eyes to see. That is the difference. Caitanya Mahaprabhu, as soon as He saw Jagannatha at Puri, Jagannatha at..., immediately fainted: "Here is My Lord." Fainted.

So we have to create that eyes to see Krsna. That will be done gradually. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva sphuraty adhah [Brs. 1.2.234]. We cannot see Krsna. We cannot command Krsna, "Please come here. I'll see You." No. He will reveal Himself, being satisfied with your service. "Here I am. You see Me now." So we have to wait for that revelation. Not by force. Force will not act. Krsna is not our order-supplier, servant: "Krsna, please come here. I'll see You." No, no. That will not do. You must be submissive, first of all surrender. You follow the rules and regulations, be mad after Krsna. Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu: govinda-virahena me. Sunyayitam jaga, sunyayitam jagat sarvam govinda-virahena me. Sunyayitam jagat sarvam: "Everything is vacant because I cannot see Govinda." Just like if one's beloved son dies, he sees everything vacant. He no more sees that cars are running on the street or people are running. No. He sees everything vacant. Why? Due to love. Similarly, when we'll come to that position, we shall see everything vacant without Krsna. Then that is the proper position to see Krsna. Sunyayitam jagat sarvam govinda-virahena me. Lord Caitanya says that "I am not a devotee of Krsna." "Now, Sir, You are crying always for Krsna." "That is simply to show, make a show that I am a great devotee of Krsna." Then? "No, how we can understand that You are not...? We know You're..." "No. Because I am still living without Krsna, that means I have no love for Krsna. I should have died long, long ago." Caitanya Mahaprabhu says. So this much ecstasy, this much eagerness, when we come, then can see always. Premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilo..., santah sadaiva. Twenty-four hours, he can see Krsna. He cannot see anything but Krsna. Just like the sunrise. As, as soon as the sun rises, you start your aeroplane, and you go on, towards the eastern, western side, you'll find always day. A practical... There will be no sunset. We have seen it while coming from Paris to London. Was it not? There was sunshine. We started from Paris at twelve o'clock and we reached London at three o'clock.

Syamasundara: Los Angeles.

Prabhupada: Los Angeles. Yes. Los Angeles at three o'clock. It actually took eleven hours, but it appeared three hours. But there was no sunset. Actually so many hours have been passed. So this is a technique. So similarly, if you keep always yourself in Krsna consciousness, Krsna will not go away from your sight. He'll not go away from your sight. You must know the technique. Is that all right? Now you have any other question, ask. Yes?

Prabhavati: I understand that you cannot see Krsna with your eyes. However, I'm just asking the details of Krsna's appearance in the material world. I want to know if Krsna appeared on this planet five thousand years ago at a certain time, that means that immediately did He appear again in another universe?

Prabhupada: Yes.

Prabhavati: Immediately...

Prabhupada: The same example. Just like six-thirty, sunrise, as soon as it passes from India, the six-thirty in another country. And as soon as it passes that country, six, six-thirty in another country. So six-thirty always there. Similarly six-thirty, twelve-thirty, three o'clock, all the times, twenty-four hours, always present in some, somewhere or other. Similarly Krsna's lila, from His birth up to the disappearance, that is always existing. Disappearance means disappearance from my eyes. Krsna does not disappear. Just like formerly people used to think, after the sunset, the sun is dead. Huh? Who were the persons that used... Sometimes, you...? They thought like that: "Sun is dead now"? Some philosophers or the Christians, they used to think like that. Similarly sun... [break] ...no birth and death because you are Krsna's part and parcel. But we disappear. Therefore Krsna says, tatha dehantaram-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati [Bg. 2.13]. One who is sober, he knows that "This man, he's not dead." Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. "He's not dead. He has simply passed from this body to another body." Just like a mother, when the child from baby's body comes to a boy's body, the mother does not cry, "Oh, where is my son, that baby?" She knows that baby has come to this body. Similarly, a person who is in the knowledge of the transmigration of the soul, he knows that "My father, my brother, he's not dead. He has simply changed his body." Dhiras tatra na muhyati. One has to become dhira, sober, to understand the things as they are. Tatha dehantaram-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati.

So this Krsna consciousness movement means we are trying to make people dhira, not adhira. Adhira cannot understand. But even adhira can understand. Dhiradhira. Krsnotkirtana-gana-nartana-parau premamrtambho-nidhi, dhiradhira-jana-priyau. A perfect devotee is dear, both for the dhira and adhira. Dhiradhira-jana-priyau priya-karau nirmatsarau pujitau sri-caitanya-krpa-bharau bhuvi bhuvo bharavahantarakau vande rupa-sanatanau raghu-yugau sri-jiva-gopalakau. So for a devotee, both the dhira and adhira welcome. We do not say only the perfect persons should come here. No. Perfect or imperfect, come here. Take part with this Krsna consciousness movement. Dhiradhira, it doesn't matter. Because one who's adhira, by associating with the dhiras, he'll also become dhira. Just like one is not drunkard, but associating with the drunkards, he becomes a drunkard. Sangat sanjayate kamah. So similarly, this Krsna consciousness movement is giving chance to everyone. Not to speak of... Kim punar brahmanah punya bhakta rajarsayas tatha [Bg. 9.33]. Api cet sudur... What is that verse? Mam hi partha vyapasritya ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah [Bg. 9.32]. They also... Te 'pi yanti, yanti param gatim. Kim punar brahmanah punya. Krsna consciousness movement is so nice, even the most sinful person can go back to home, back to Godhead. And what to speak of the pious brahmanas? Kim punar brahmanah punya bhakta rajarsayas tatha [Bg. 9.33]. They will go. Even those who are sinful, if they take to Krsna consciousness, they'll also go. It is so nice.

Woman (2): ...may ask the question... You spoke about transmigration of souls, and reincarnation.

Prabhupada: Stand up.

Woman (2): ...transmigration of souls, or reincarnation as karma.

Prabhupada: Yes.

Woman (2): ...if you believe in it, could you answer me by telling me how someone who has entered a new body and a new life doesn't remember anything of the past? If, for example, I suffer today because of what I did in the past, any form of retribution or suffering should be for me a total consciousness.

Prabhupada: Yes. Do you remember from your birth up to date, everything? You remember? Do you remember?

Woman (2): Pardon?

Prabhupada: From your birth till today, do you remember everything?

Woman (2): No.

Prabhupada: Then why do you forget in this life? Things which have happened in this life, in your childhood, so many things happened, but do you remember all of them? So that, does it mean that you did not do so?

Woman (2): No.

Prabhupada: Therefore you, you remember or not remember, it doesn't matter.

Woman (2): But if I'm, if I'm...

Prabhupada: That is your nature: you forget. So you do not remember even the incidences of this life. How you can remember the incidents of your past life? Because you are forgetful. You are so imperfect that you forget after two hours everything. That is your nature. That does not mean that you had, you did not do anything. And, besides that, the... You remember or not remember. Suppose your guardian remembers, "My dear child, when you were a small baby, you did it." But you remember no... Similarly Krsna is there. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati [Bg. 18.61]. Anumanta upadrasta. He knows everything. You may forget. But Krsna knows. "You wanted this thing. All right. Take it. You worked for this. Now I give you the opportunity. You take this. You wanted to eat everything and anything, without any discrimination. All right. Now you become a hog." That is Krsna's favor. "And if you wanted Me..."

yanti deva-vrata devan
pitrn yanti pitr-vratah
bhutejya yanti bhu...,
mad-yajino 'pi yanti...
 [Bg. 9.25]

"You wanted Me. You sacrificed everything for Me. Please come on." Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9]. So as you work... So therefore this life is the preparation stage for your next life -- either you choice a better life, or a sinful life, or unimportant life. That is your... Just like if you get good education, that will make your future life nice. But if you don't go to school, how you can get a better life? Similarly karma... Karmana daiva netrena [SB 3.31.1]. According to your karma. If you are earned, worked very hard for nice place, you'll get it.

Woman (2): So there's no end to the samsaras...

Prabhupada: Oh, yes. That... You are very intelligent. In this way, we are creating our karmas. And getting one, one kind of body to another, another, another. Therefore if we want to get out of this cycle of birth and death, then we must surrender to Krsna. Then the facility will be tyaktva deham... After giving up this body, tyaktva de..., punar janma naiti. No more birth in this material world. That is Krsna consciousness, the best service to the humanity, to stop this repetition of birth and death and go to home, back to home, back to Godhead. This is the special benediction of Krsna consciousness.

Woman (2): So it is the short-cut way to...

Prabhupada: Eh?

Woman (2): It is a short-cut to eternal life?

Prabhupada: Yes. This is the short-cut. Just if you become Krsna conscious fully, if you are trained up, just after death, you go to Krsna. That's all. Immediately.

Woman (2): How does it compare with other movements?

Prabhupada: Eh?

Woman (2): How does it compare with other movements?

Prabhupada: That you have to judge. What can I say? If you don't want to go to Krsna, you can do anything else.

Woman (2): I mean... Are these movements leading to Krsna?

Prabhupada: Yes. If you want to meet Krsna immediately, then do as these boys are doing, these girls are doing. What is the difficulty? They are Europeans, Americans. They used to eat... They had all the bad habits. Now, for Krsna's sake, they have given up everything. They want Krsna. They are, they are determined. Drdha-vratah. Bhajante mam drdha-vratah. So as soon as you become determined, your success is sure. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: ...Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

nantam vidamy aham ami munayo agrajas te
maya-balasya purusasya kuto 'vara ye
gayan gunan dasa-satanana adi-devah
seso 'dhunapi samavasyati nasya param

This is a verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam. This was recited by Brahma. The purpose of this verse is... Brahma says that "Although I am Brahma, and before me all the great sages, everyone, has tried to know the Supreme Lord in complete, but nobody could understand where is the end of the unlimited potencies of the Supreme Lord."

seho rahu-sarvajna-siromani sri-krsna
nija-gunera anta na pana hayena satrsna

Even Lord Sri Krsna Himself, He does not know how unlimited is His potency. Lord Caitanya says that. He also does not know.

seha rahu-vraje yabe krsna avatara
tanra caritra vicarite mana na paya para
prakrtaprakrta srsti kaila eka-ksane
asesa-vaikunthajanda svasvanatha-sane

In this way, the Supreme Lord Sri Krsna, by His plenary expansions, He is doing unlimited activities, transcendental.

So for a living entity, a small living entity like us, we cannot know. The only thing is that, as stated in the Bhagavad-gita, that satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah, tusyanti ca ramanti ca [Bg. 9.14]. The subject matter is so nice that the devotees who are engaged in Krsna consciousness in the transcendental loving service, they like. And in the association of pure devotees these topics become palatable. There are many instances in the Bhagavata also. When Saunakadi Rsi, sages headed by Saunaka Muni, was hearing Srimad-Bhagavatam by Suta Gosvami, they also uttered this, vayam tu na vitrpyama. "You are reciting about the glories of the Supreme Lord, His activities, so please continue. We are not yet satisfied. The subject matter is so nice that we want to more and more..." Svadu svadu pade pade. As you go on hearing and as you become purified... There is a very practical example: the sugar candy. Sugar candy is, by nature it is very sweet. But if you give it to a patient who is jaundiced, if you give, he will taste it, that he'll say that it is bitter. It is bitter. You will have practical exam... If you ask him what is the taste, he'll say bitter. Everyone knows that sugar candy is very sweet, but if you give to a patient suffering from jaundice, he'll say it is bitter. Similarly, the krsna-katha, the Lord's name, fame, quality, entourage, all these things are very sweet. To whom? Those who are liberated from this jaundice of materialism. For them it is very sweet. So as you feel sweetness of this Krsna-katha, you should know that you are becoming liberated from this material entanglement. The same thing: sugar candy is the only medicine for jaundice. Those who are suffering from jaundice, they are prescribed by physician to take sugar candy water in the morning. And by drinking that sugar candy water, gradually he feels the sweetness of sugar candy. That is the test that he is getting free from the disease. So similarly, Bhagavad-gita or Srimad-Bhagavatam or anything where the topics of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is discussed, if you feel it is interesting, that means you are getting out of the jaundice of this material disease. Yes. This is the test. If you don't feel interested, then you must know that the jaundice of material disease is there. So this is the test. The more you feel krsna-katha, the topics of Krsna, tasteful, the more you'll know that you are getting free from the jaundice of material disease.

e-mata anyatra nahi suniye adbhuta
yahara sravane citta haya avadhuta
'krsna-vatsair asankhyataih'-sukadeva-vani
krsna-sange kata gopa-sankhya nahi jani

Gopa. Krsna, you know, in His abode, He is just like a sixteen-years-old boy, and His main pastime is to take the cows in the pasturing ground with His friends, boyfriends, and play with them. This is Krsna's day's business. So Sukadeva Gosvami has written a very nice verse, that these boys who are playing with Krsna, in their past lives they had accumulated heaps of pious activities. Krta-punya-punjah [SB 10.12.11]. Sakam vijahruh. Ittham satam brahma-sukhanubhutya. Now, Sukadeva Gosvami is writing. These boys who are playing with Krsna, they are playing with whom? They are playing with the Supreme Absolute Truth, who is considered as impersonal by the great sages. Ittham satam brahma... Brahma-sukha. Brahma, transcendental Brahman realization. The reservoir of Brahman realization is here, Krsna. So these boys who are playing with this Krsna, He is the reservoir of that Brahman realization. Ittham satam brahma-sukhanubhutya dasyam gatanam para-daivatena. Dasyam gatanam, those who have accepted the Supreme Lord as master, that means devotees, for them this Krsna is the Supreme Lord. For the impersonalists He is Supreme Brahman, and for the personalists He is Supreme Lord. And mayasritanam nara-darakena. And those who are under the spell of materialism, for them He is ordinary boy. Mayasritanam nara-darakena sakam vijahruh krta-punya-punjah [SB 10.12.11]. With Him these boys, who had accumulated millions and millions births of pious activities, now they have got the opportunity of playing with Krsna face to face just like ordinary boys play. So similarly, Krsna is very much fond of playing with His young boyfriends. That is mentioned in the Brahma-samhita. Surabhir abhipalayantam, laksmi-sahasra-sata-sambhrama-sevyamanam [Bs. 5.29]. So these things are explained here also.

eka eka gopa kare ye vatsa carana
koti, arbuda, sankha, padma, tahara ganana

Now there are so many friends, cowherd boys, nobody can count. Nobody... Unlimited, everything unlimited. They have unlimited number of cows, unlimited number of boyfriends, everything unlimited.

vetra, venu dala, srnga, vastra, alankara,
gopa-ganera yata, tara nahi lekha-para

Now these cowherds boys, they have got a cane in the hand, vetra. And each of them has got a flute also. Vetra venu dala. And a lotus flower, and a srngara, a horn. Srngara vastra, and very nicely dressed. And full of ornaments. Just like Krsna is dressed, similarly, His friends, cowherd boys, they are also dressed. In the spiritual world, when you go, you'll not be able to understand who is Krsna and who is not Krsna. Everyone is like Krsna. Similarly, in the Vaikuntha planets everyone is like Visnu. That is called sayujya-mukti. The living entities, when they enter into the spiritual planets, they become as good as Krsna and Visnu -- there is no difference -- because it is absolute world. Here the difference is there. The impersonalists, they cannot understand that even in individuality there is no difference. As soon as they think of individuality, oh, they think that there is a difference. Then what is liberation? Yes. And actually there is no difference. The difference is only that Krsna's personality and others' personalities, they are conscious that "Krsna is our object of love." That's it. The center is Krsna. In this way the individual boys and girls and Krsna, everyone is enjoying spiritual bliss.

sabe haila caturbhuja vaikunthera pati
prthak prthak brahmandera brahma kare stuti
eka krsna-deha haite sabara prakase
ksaneke sabai sei sarire pravese

Now, these, all these cowherd boys and everything, cows and everything, they are all expansion of Krsna's energy. It is spiritual. Just like we are expansion of Krsna's marginal energy and the matter is also expansion of Krsna's inferior material energy, similarly, in the spiritual world all those things -- Krsna, the cowherd boys, the cows, and everything -- they are also expansion of His spiritual energy.

eka krsna-deha haite sabara prakase
ksaneke sabai sei sarire pravese
iha dekhi' brahma haila mohita, vismita
stuti kari' ei pache karila niscita

Brahma, he was bewildered. When Krsna came on this planet, Brahma... Muhyanti yat surayah. Brahma was astonished and Indra was astonished: "How is that my Lord Krsna has come at Vrndavana as a cowherd boy?" So they came to Vrndavana to test. So all... So Brahma, by his... He has got so much power. He had kidnapped all the cows and the boys of Krsna. And when he came back he saw Krsna is playing with the same cows and boys again. Then he could understand that "This boy is Krsna." Then he offered his prayer and begged pardon from Him that "I misunderstood." In this way there are many narrations in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Here Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is referring to that incident.

iha dekhi' brahma haila mohita, vismita
stuti kari' ei pache karila niscita

So he was astonished, and then, after prayer, he was satisfied.

ye kahe-'krsnera vaibhava muni saba janon'
se januka -- kaya-mane muni ei manon

So Brahma admitted that "If anybody says that 'I know Krsna. I know the Supreme Personality of Godhead in detail,' so maybe he may know, but so far I am concerned, I do not know." The purport is that Brahma is the first creature in this universe. He is the first living entity. He accepts his inability to understand about Krsna, and what to speak of others? What to speak of the commentator who says that "This is not Krsna; this is something else."

ei ye tomara ananta vaibhavamrta-sindhu
mora van-mano-gamya nahe eka bindu

Brahma admitted that "Your activities, Your pastimes, everything of You, it is not possible even to taste or to understand even a particle of it." The very verse recited here,

jananta eva janantu
kim bahuktya na me prabho
manaso vapuso vaco
vaibhavam tava gocarah

Nobody can understand how great is Krsna.

krsnera mahima rahu-keba tara jnata
vrndavana-sthanera dekha ascarya vibhuta

That is described, the glories of Krsna -- nobody can understand. Similarly, vrndavana-sthanera ascarya vibhuta. Similarly, the land which is known as Vrndavana, it has also got unlimited potency. Still, as I have several times mentioned, if you go to Vrndavana you'll find unlimited potency of spiritual atmosphere still. And therefore Lord Caitanya recommended that aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa-tanayah tad dhama vrndavanam: "As Lord Krsna is worshipable, similarly His place, Vrndavana, is as good as Krsna. It is also worshipable." And actually, still in India, if you go to Vrndavana, you'll see so many saints and sages are still there. They are worshiping Vrndavana-dhama.

apara aisvarya krsnera-nahika ganana
sakha-candra-nyaye kari dig-darasana
aisvarya kahite sphurila aisvarya-sagara

manendriya dubila, prabhu ha-ila phanpara
bhagavatera ei sloka padila apane
artha asvadite sukhe karena vyakhyane

Now, Caitanya Mahaprabhu's attitude was... When He was speaking of Krsna He sometimes became in trance, and He became sometimes unconscious. That was His... Because Caitanya Mahaprabhu's incarnation is that He is Krsna, and Krsna is trying to understand Krsna as Krsna's devotee. That is His feature. These are very complicated things, but that is the position of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. So when He used to speak something of Krsna, He sometimes became unconscious.

brahma visnu hara-ei srstyadi-isvara
tine ajnakari krsnera krsna-adhisvara

So... So far the demigods are concerned, Brahma is the chief. Brahma, Visnu and Mahesvara, they are ajnakari. They are under the order of Krsna: Brahma, Visnu, Mahesvara.

e samanya tryadhisvarera suna artha ara
jagat-karana tina purusavatara

Then there are three purusa-avataras, we have already discussed. Jagat... For material creation there are three purusa incarnations.

maha-visnu, padmanabha, ksirodaka-svami
ei tina-sthula-suksma-sarva-antaryami

And those three incarnations are called Maha-Visnu, Padmanabha, Padmanabha Visnu. Padmanabha means from His navel there is a stem of lotus flower, and Ksirodakasayi Visnu... Ei tina-sthula-suksma-sarva-antaryami.

ei tina-sarvasraya jagat-isvara
eho saba kala-amsa krsna-adhisvara

So all these incarnations are plenary parts of Krsna. And this is confirmed in Brahma-samhita:

yasyaika-nisvasita-kalam athavalambya
jivanti loma-vilaja jagad-anda-nathah
visnur mahan sa iha yasya kala-viseso
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
 [Bs. 5.48]

So Govinda, the Supreme Lord, the cause of all causes, His plenary portions are these three Visnus.

ei artha-madhyama, suna 'gudha' artha ara
tina avasa-sthana krsnera sastre khyati yara

Now, Krsna abode, the planet which is called Goloka Vrndavana, that has three divisions. As we have got replica on this earth, there is Vrndavana, Mathura, and Dvaraka. Dvaraka is in Gujarat, and Mathura and Vrndavana is in U.P., Uttar Pradesh, near Delhi. And Dvaraka is about three hundred miles or more than that from Delhi. So these are replicas of the original Krsnaloka.
'antahpura'-goloka-sri-vrndavana

yahan nitya-sthiti mata-pita-bandhu-gana
madhuraisvarya-madhurya-krpadi-bhandara
yogamaya dasi yahan rasadi lila-sara

So out of these three places, Vrndavana-dhama is the most important. That is the confidential home of Krsna. Just like a businessman might have many places for his business activities, but his home is different from all this business. He may live in the countryside in a cottage, but he may be a very big businessman. Similarly Krsna, although He's all-powerful, He lives at Vrndavana in the gardenlike city. Not city; a tract of land. A small city is there now. They have named Vrndavana. But Vrndavana's not that small city. It is a tract of land about eighty-four miles. So it is full of gardens and full of nice places. Anywhere you go, you will find something wonderful to see. There are many trees and fruits and flowers, many varieties of birds, and the cranes on the Yamuna side. Each and every place is remembering Krsna. If you go there you'll find that "Krsna is... Somewhere He was playing. I must find out." It is such nice place. So Vrndavana is the most confidential part of Krsna's abode.

tara tale paravyoma-'visnuloka'-nama
narayana-adi ananta svarupera dhama

So in the spiritual world, that Vrndavana planet is the highest planet, and below that planet there are innumerable Vaikuntha planets which are called Visnuloka.

tara tale paravyoma-'visnuloka'-nama
narayana-adi ananta svarupera dhama

And the presiding Deity, predominating Deity in those planets is called Narayana. Narayana is also expansion of Krsna. Generally, Narayana is accepted as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but from authentic scripture we understand that Narayana is expansion of Krsna.

'madhyama-avasa' krsnera-sad-aisvarya-bhandara
ananta svarupe yahan karena vihara

Although Krsna is two-handed and, I mean to say, busy with His flute-playing, but we do not know, many do not know, that He is, has expanded as Narayana and Visnu. He is the predominating Deity all over the spiritual world.

ananta vaikuntha yahan bhandara-kothari
parisada-gane sad-aisvarye ache bhari'

And in each and every planet there are innumerable devotees. He's surrounded by the innumerable devotees. And He's reciting evidences, verse from Brahma-samhita:

goloka-namni nija-dhamni tale ca tasya
devi-mahesa-hari-dhamasu tesu tesu
te te prabhava-nicaya vihitas ca yena
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
 [Bs. 5.43]

His own personal planet is Goloka Vrndavana, and below that planet there are many other, innumerable planets which are known as Vaikuntha. And below that spiritual world there is material world. And between material world and spiritual world there is another space, which is called Sivaloka. And below that Sivaloka is this Devi-dhama. This material is called Devi-dhama. Durga. The presiding deity of this Devi-dhama is Durga. He's giving evidences from many authentic Vedic literatures. One of them is Brahma-samhita. Then He's giving another evidence from Padma Purana, the existence of spiritual planets. In Indian spiritual society the evidences are given from Vedic literature. Then it is accepted, not that mental speculationist's theory, "I think this. I think that..." No. Just the same example I have several times cited before you, that the law court, they give evidences from the lawbook, sections from the lawbook. Similarly, the process is whenever we speak something transcendental subject, if we can pick up evidences from Vedic literatures... There are many authentic Vedic literatures. They are accepted by the spiritual societies. And one's learning is proved if he can give evidences from these Vedic literatures. Similarly Lord Caitanya, whatever He is speaking, He's giving immediately references from Vedic literature. So, so far the existence of the spiritual world and different planets, spiritual planets, Vaikuntha and Krsnaloka, one may think... Of course, those who have no knowledge, they may think that these are all stories. No, they are not stories. They are actual facts, and Lord Caitanya is giving evidences from Brahma-samhita, from Padma Purana, and similar other Vedic literatures.

Thank you very much. Any question? (end)

Controlling the Uncontrollable

Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.26.27
Bombay, January 4, 1975

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Take a test

Nitai: "From the false ego of goodness, another transformation takes place. From this evolves the mind, whose thoughts and reflections give rise to desire."

Prabhupada:

vaikarikad vikurvanan
manas-tattvam ajayata
yat-sankalpa-vikalpabhyam
vartate kama-sambhavah
 [SB 3.26.27]

So this mind is material because it is the product of transformation of the modes of goodness. Then, gradually, being contaminated by different kinds of material desires, it becomes degraded. Kama esa krodha esa rajo-guna-samudbhavah. When it is deteriorated, then, from the standard of goodness, it comes to rajo-guna. And rajo-guna means lusty desires, unending desires. And if desires are not fulfilled, then there is krodha, anger. In this way, kama krodha lobha moha matsarya -- everything becomes very prominent, and we become servant of these propensities, kama, krodha, moha, matsarya, mada, lobha. This is called illusion, gradually degraded mind. And the business of the mind is sankalpa and vikalpa. Sankalpa means decide to do something, and vikalpa means again to reject it. That is the business of mind. Everyone desires the peacefulness of mind, but the material mind -- the nature is sankalpa and vikalpa, restlessness. You cannot fix up.

So if you can control the senses by the yogic, mystic yogic process, this mechanical endeavor, how to control the mind, then you can again be placed in the original spiritual status. That is the yoga system. The yoga system is recommended to persons whose mind is very restless. Everyone's mind is restless -- not a particular man mind is restless. Everyone's. But it is very difficult, also, to bring the mind into peaceful status. So long the desires are there, it is not possible to bring the mind in complete peace and tranquillity. It is not possible because the sankalpa-vikalpa... Vartate-kama-sambhavah. So long there is desire, so it is not possible to bring the mind under control. Therefore Caitanya-caritamrta says, Kaviraja Gosvami, that even the pious actors, those who are acting very piously... Those who are acting impiously, sinfully, there is no question of peace of the mind. That is not possible. Even those who are acting very piously, that is also not possible. You cannot control even the mind in that way. Then those who are desiring to stop these material activities completely, pious or impious, they also cannot control the mind. And then the yogis... The first group, who are interested in pious activities, they are karmis. And those who are neither interested in pious activities or impious activities -- they want to stop all kinds of activities... Just like the Buddha philosophy says, nirvana: "Stop the activities of the mind or desires." On that status also, it is not possible to control the mind, meditation. And... These mukti-kami. And then siddhi-kami, the yogis, they also cannot control the mind, what to speak of ordinary man who are neither interested in pious activities or in mukti or yogic perfection?

So when Krsna advised Arjuna to practice yoga for controlling the mind in the Sixth Chapter of the Bhagavad-gita, Arjuna refused. Arjuna said, "My dear Krsna, You are advising me to control the mind by practicing yoga, but I have no such opportunity because I am a family man. I am also politician, royal family. I have to see things, administration of the kingdom. And besides that, in family life I have to seek for my material interest. So how it is possible for me to control the mind?" So he flatly said,

cancalam hi manah krsna
pramathi balavad drdham
tasyaham nigraham manye
vayor iva suduskaram
 [Bg. 6.34]

"My dear Krsna, I think the mind is very, very restless." Cancalam hi manah krsna. Pramathi: "as madman." As madman is always restless... "And very strong. I want to control the mind, but it does not come under control. So this is the position. Therefore, You are asking me to control the mind..." Tasya aham nigraham manye vayor iva suduskaram: "I think it is more difficult than controlling the wind." Suppose there is very strong wind, and if you want to stop it, you see, it is not possible. There is cyclone. Similarly, Arjuna has compared the mind with the speed of cyclone. How it is to be controlled? So completely denied. But Krsna said, just to encourage Arjuna, that he should not be disappointed because he could not control the mind. But still, because his mind was always engaged in the lotus feet of Krsna, he is the best of all the yogis.

yoginam api sarvesam
mad-gatenantar-atmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah
 [Bg. 6.47]

He encouraged Arjuna that "Don't be disappointed because your mind is always engaged in Me." Arjuna might be anything, but he was always thinking of Krsna. He was always associating with Krsna. He did not know anything else, Krsna. That is the position of first-class yogi. Otherwise, if you try to control the mind from kama, krodha, lobha, moha, matsarya, that is not possible. You have to change the position of such activities.

Narottama dasa Thakura... Here it is said that kama-sambhavah. Kama, kama means desire. So mind is restless, always desiring something, desiring something. So the best policy to control the mind is to desire how to spread Krsna consciousness. This is the best. Kamah krsna-karmarpane. Narottama dasa Thakura has said that you cannot be free from desire. That is not possible. This is useless attempt. They say that "You become desireless." No, that is not possible. How can I...? If I become desireless, I become dead. So long I am living entity, I must desire. I cannot check it. Therefore kama means desire. So at the present moment, we are desiring how to become happy in this material world, how to acquire so much money, how to acquire this, how to acquire this, how to get this, how to get that. This is kama. So this brain taxation, if you engage in Krsna's service -- how to spread Krsna consciousness, how to convince people about Krsna, how to take them to the Krsna's desire, sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66] -- and in this way, if you go on making plan for spreading Krsna consciousness, then your mind is controlled.

You cannot stop desire. That is not possible. The kama-sambhavah... Sankalpa-vikalpabhyam vartate kama-sambhavah. This is the mind's position. I am desiring something, and if it is not very palatable, then I reject it. I accept another desire. This is. You cannot keep the mind vacant even for a single moment. Nobody has got this experience, that mind is vacant. If, by force, you are trying to do that, it is simply laboring. It is not possible. Just like to concentrate one's mind in the vacant... Kleso 'dhikataras tesam avyaktasakta-cetasam [Bg. 12.5]. Klesah, klesah adhikataras tesam. Impersonal and void. If you want to engage your mind in the impersonality or voidness of variegatedness, it is simply very, very difficult. The best, easy way of controlling the mind... Because Krsna has said that yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantar-atmana [Bg. 6.47], antar-atmana, sraddhavan bhajate yo mam. This is the way. Anyone who is making plan, the plan-making... Kama-sambhavah means plan-making. You see the whole world, the big, big politicians. In our government, central government, there is a planning commission. Perhaps every one of you know it, planning commission. From, for the last twenty years they are making simply plans, and no plan has become successful. Every plan (chuckling) is unsuccessful, and the result is eight rupees kilo rice, your staple food. The plan has come successfully to bring rice eight rupees per kilo. That is not possible. So long the, you are materially affected and making plan how to get out of it, the material nature is so strong that it will baffle all your plans, and therefore you will have to remain perpetually restless. One plan you make, and it is baffled by the material nature, stringent laws of nature. And at last, making plan, making plan, making plan -- one day the time comes and immediately orders, "Please vacate your presidency, your prime ministership." Although I am trying to make plan, successful plans, up to the point of death... Pralayanta, pralayanta, asuric plan, up to the end of life... And then he entrusts. He says, "My dear son, my dear daughter, I could not fulfill this plan, so you do it. Now I hand it over to you." And the son also going on, making plan, plan, plan. It will never be fulfilled.

That is the verdict of the sastra. Durasaya ye bahir-artha-maninah. Durasaya. It is impossible. Therefore this sankalpa-vikalpa, accepting some plan and rejecting again, this is going on perpetually. It is never fulfilled; neither it will be fulfilled at any time. And for making this plan, sankalpa-vikalpa, perpetually I am giving up one kind of body; I am accepting another body. I am giving up the residence of one planet. I am going to the heavenly planet:

urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha
madhye tisthanti rajasah
jaghanya-guna-vrtti-stha
adho gacchanti tamasah
 [Bg. 14.18]

Plan in the modes of goodness and passion, in ignorance. So different plans, different kinds of body, different residential quarter in different planets, different... You see? We have got experience even in Bombay. If one body is living here in Bombay for fifty years, how many plans he has had made and how many apartments he has changed and still, the plan-making business is going on. Everyone has got this experience. It is not very difficult.

So as it is going on in this life, in this span of life, similarly, it is going on life after life, this plan-making business. So the intelligent persons, they should understand that how to stop this unlimited plan-making business. Still there is no solution. That is called athato brahma jijnasa. That is life, athato brahma-jijnasa, when one is inquisitive to know the broader plan, Brahman plan. Brahman means the biggest, brhatva, the biggest. The biggest plan, if anyone wants to understand, becomes inquisitive, then his life, real life, begins. Athato brahma jijnasa. So wherefrom brahma-jijnasa? Brahma-jijnasa... This ordinary jijnasa, inquiry, "What is the price of rice today?" or "What is the situation of strike? What is the situation of this, that?" that you can ask from the newspaper or from anyone, friend. But so far brahma-jijnasa, inquiry of Brahman, then where shall you inquire? Will you go to the exchange market or in the other market? No. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum eva abhigacchet [MU 1.2.12]. Sa gurum evabhigacchet. That is the injunction of the Vedas, that you must find out guru. Samit-panih srotriyam brahma-nistham. Guru means brahma-nistham. Brahma-nistham. That is the guru's qualification. And srotriyam, one who has heard from the disciplic succession, he is guru, not anyone, magician, no. Guru, as Krsna said...

Krsna is the original guru. He is Brahma's guru. Then who can be better guru than Krsna? Tene brahma hrda adi-kavaye. He instructed Brahma. Brahma instructed Narada, and Narada instructed Vyasadeva, and Vyasadeva has given us so many literatures. This is called parampara system. Vedavyasa. Vyasadeva has given us four Vedas: Sama, Yajur, Rg, Atharva; then explained them in the 108 Puranas. Then again, he has summarized them in Vedanta-sutra. Then again, he has explained the Vedanta-sutra by Srimad-Bhagavatam. Brahma-sutra-bhasya. In every chapter of Srimad-Bhagavatam you will find this statement by Vyasadeva, brahma-sutra-bhasya. Brahma-sutra-bhasya is not that Sankara's bhasya, Sariraka-bhasya. That is artificial. Here the brahma-sutra-bhasya. Brahma-sutra is written by Vyasadeva, and because he knew that in future so many rascals will misinterpret this Brahma-sutra, therefore he compiled personally the bhasya of Brahma-sutra. That is Srimad-Bhagavatam. Bhasyam brahma-sutranam vedartha-paribrmhitam **: "The meaning of the Vedas is completely described, and it is the original comment on Brahma-sutra." Therefore you will see Srimad-Bhagavatam begins from the words of Brahma-sutra: jivasya tattva-jijnasa. As it is said in the Brahma-sutra, athato brahma jijnasa, the Bhagavata says that jivasya tattva-jijnasa: "The living entity's only business is to inquire about the Absolute Truth." Na yas ceha karmabhih: "No other business." Dharmartha-kama-moksa [SB 4.8.41].

So dharma... generally, people think that "Becoming religious, we shall be economically developed." Dharma artha. "We shall get artha. We shall be..." That is... Automatically it comes. If you are actually following the religious principle, artha will come. There is no doubt. And... But we do not know what is dharma. That is the difficulty. That you have to learn from Krsna, athato brahma jijnasa, from the guru. And what guru says, Krsna says? sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. This is dharma. Anything else, that is all cheating. Dharmah projjhita-kaitavah atra. Kaitava. Kaitava means cheating. And Sridhara Svami says, "This moksa is also another cheating." Moksa is another... "I shall make me void. I shall finish my existence, individual existence. I shall merge into the existence of the Absolute," this conception, moksa, mukti, is also commented by Sridhara Svami, "This is another cheating, another cheating." Because there cannot be moksa. You cannot become one with the Supreme. How you can be? As it is said in the Bhagavad-gita, mamaivamso jiva-bhutah jiva-loke sanatanah [Bg. 15.7]. Sanatanah. You are part and parcel of the Supreme. How you can become one? So this kind of attempt is also cheating. You cannot become one. Because eternally, sanatana, eternally, you are different. Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita that "Myself, My dear Arjuna, yourself, and all the soldiers and kings who have assembled in this battlefield, they were the same individual in the past, and they are individual now, and they will continue to remain individual." So where there is oneness? In the past, present, future the individuality is there.

So it is a concoction, to finish the individuality. It is called spiritual suicide. Just like if a man becomes disappointed and he cuts his own throat or hangs him, some way or other, eats some poison, to finish, does it mean that he is finished? Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. He is rascal. He does not know. By finishing this body he is finished -- no, that is not possible. The result is, because he violated the rules of nature, he becomes a ghost. That is his life. One who commits suicide, he becomes a ghost. Ghost means he does not get this material body. He remains in the subtle body, mind, intelligence. Therefore ghost can go because he is in the mind. Mind speed is very strong. If you have got this material body, you cannot go immediately hundred miles off. But if you are in the mental body, you can go immediately, thousand miles immediately, within a second. So the ghost, they can play something wonderful because... But they are not happy because they have no gross body. They want to enjoy. He's materialist. He has committed suicide for some material want. So he is want of material..., fulfilling material desire. He could not fulfill in this body; therefore commits suicide, but the desire is there. The desire is there, and he cannot fulfill it. He becomes perplexed. Therefore the ghost create disturbance sometimes.

So in this way desires cannot be finished. That is not possible. Kama-sambhavah. It is not possible. Therefore the best thing is that fix up your mind in Krsna, in Krsna consciousness. Then you will be happy, the mind always engaged in Krsna's business, planning how to satisfy Krsna. That you are, require. That is intelligence. Krsna wants everyone to surrender unto Him. When Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66], He does not say only to Arjuna; He says to everyone. So that is Krsna's desire, and if you want to serve Krsna, to fulfill His desire, that means you canvass everyone to surrender to Krsna. This is preaching. Krsna wants it. It is declared. So your business is to satisfy Krsna. So do it. Why don't you do it? Why you are aspiring after mukti, siddhi, and bhukti? These are all personal. Anyone who is executing pious activities, acquiring punya, what is the result? Punya means he will go to the heavenly planet. That is sense gratification. Heavenly planet, you go to the heavenly planet. You live for many thousands of years, many millions of years, and get the association of apsaras, very nice standard of life, and so on, so on. These are all personal comforts, bhukti, a better standard of material enjoyment. To go to the heavenly planet means a better standard of, thousand times better, millions times better than this planet. As you go up and up... This is Bhurloka. Then Bhuvarloka, Svarloka, Janaloka, Maharloka, Tapoloka, Brahmaloka, so many lokas. Urdhvam gacchanti sattva-sthah [Bg. 14.18]. If you increase your modes of goodness, then you gradually promoted more and more comfortable situation. If you go to the Siddhaloka, immediately you become a perfect yogi. The yogis are trying to get some power, material power, anima laghima prapti-siddhi. If one gets this prapti... Prapti-siddhi means whatever he likes he can get immediately. That is cal... And people become after him, "Oh, here is God. He is creating rasagulla." (laughter) You see? Yes. One yogi in Benares, he... Anyone who would come to him, immediately he will present two rasagulla in a pot. He will give, and immediately rasagulla will be there. And big, big men, they become surprised, "Oh, here is God." He does not say, "What is the price of these rasagulla?" Say, four annas? So by jugglery of four annas, he became God. This is going on. This rascaldom is going on. By jugglery of four annas, eight annas, or four hundred or four thousand, if one can make some jugglery, then he becomes God. This is foolishness. This is going on.

Therefore Krsna says that this kind of yoga practice is simply cheating. The first-class yogi is he... Yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantar-atmana [Bg. 6.47]. One who is thinking of always Krsna, "Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna," he is first-class yogi. And they are all cheaters. Some foolish people are cheated by this yogic jugglery and he gets some position, some material position. So material positions there are many. Even a politician, if he talks, many millions people gather to hear him. But what is the benefit of such hearing? First of all we have to see what is the benefit. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh [SB 7.5.23]. If you are interested of hearing lectures, then sastra says that "Hear of Visnu," not of any rascal. Hear from Vaisnava. Then you will be benefited. Otherwise you will not be benefited. Avaisnavo gurur na sa syat. This is the injunction of the sastra. One who is avaisnava, he cannot become guru. Sat-karma-nipuno vipro mantra-tantra-visaradah. A brahmana, and he is very expert in sat-karma... Sat-karma means six kinds of occupational duties. What is that? Pathana. A brahmana must be very, very learned scholar by reading Vedic literature, and pathana, and teach others of the Vedic literature. Therefore it was the custom of the brahmanas -- they would not accept anyone's service. They will sit down anywhere and open a school for teaching Vedic literature. Pathana pathana. He will personally become learned, and he will teach others. And the students, they will go from door to..., brahmacari, door to door for begging, "Mother, give me some alms," and they will give because their students are there in the gurukula or catuspathi. So whatever they will bring, that will be cooked and offered to Krsna, and the prasadam will be distributed amongst themselves. This was the process, not twenty rupees' fee and give some bribe to enter into the school, and that is also all rascal education, no. First-class education, without any fee, from the realized soul -- that was educational system, varnasrama-dharma.

So we have to find out such guru, Vaisnava. Sastra says, sat-karma-nipuno vipro mantra-tantra-visaradah. Not only expert in six kinds of occupational..., pathana pathana yajana yajana dana pratigraha, but mantra-tantra-visaradah: "Vedic mantra or tantra -- everything he knows perfectly well." Sat-karma-nipuno vipro mantra-tantra..., avaisnavo gurur na sa syat: "But if he has got one disqualification -- he is faithless; he does not believe in the Supreme Personality of Godhead or Visnu; he is believer in other demigods and other process, even Lord Siva or Lord Brahma, the best of all the demigods -- then he becomes avaisnava." Just like Ravana. Ravana was very learned scholar, son of a brahmana, very good scholar, and economically developed, but only fault was avaisnava: he did not care for Rama. So he is designated as raksasa. So avaisnava, who is not devotee of Visnu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, gurur na sa syat, he cannot become guru. That is not possible. And vaisnavah sva-paco guruh. Sva-paca. Sva-paca means the dog-eaters, the lowest of the mankind, dog-eaters, candala. Candalo 'pi dvija-srestho hari-bhakti-parayanah. If somehow or other he has become Vaisnava, then he can become guru, not this brahmana, sat-karma-nipuno vipro mantra-tantra-visaradah. Because that one disqualification is there, that he is not a Vaisnava, he cannot become guru. But a person born in the lowest of the human society, papa-yoni, which is called papa-yoni... Mam hi partha vyapasritya ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah [Bg. 9.32]. Krsna says that "Anyone who takes shelter of Me, even he belongs to the papa-yoni..." Papa-yoni means the candalas, less than the sudras. Striyo vaisyas tatha sudrah... Again He mentions. Te 'pi yanti param gatim. So they are eligible to go back to home, back to Godhead. There are so many instances. Kirata-hunandhra-pulinda-pulkasa abhira-sumbha yavanah khasadayah, ye 'nye ca papah: [SB 2.4.18] "Lower than them, still more sinful," sudhyanti, "they can be purified," prabhavisnave namah, "if he becomes a Vaisnava."

So vaisnave jati-buddhih is naraki-buddhih. One should not consider a Vaisnava, whether he is born of low family, he is not born of brahmana family. This kinds of consideration is naraki-buddhi. So there are many instances. Sri Sanatana Gosvami says that avaisnava-mukhodgirnam putam hari-kathamrtam, sravanam na kartavyam. If a avaisnava, if a Mayavadi, he speaks about Bhagavatam or Bhagavad-gita, one should not hear it. He should avoid it because it will create some misimpression. Caitanya Mahaprabhu has forbidden strongly, mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva-nasa: [Cc. Madhya 6.169] "If one hears from a Mayavadi about Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, then that person is doomed." So this is, therefore, tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet [MU 1.2.12]. This injunction means one should approach a Vaisnava to accept him as guru and then take lessons from him and make his life successful.

Thank you very much. (end)
