Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Tamala Krsna: ...hoping to bring the buses here to take a photograph with you, Srila Prabhupada, this morning. [break]Sri Govinda: ...Mr. Candra Ahuja Tir(?). He has loaned us the Continental which we have been using to drive you in.
Prabhupada: Oh. You are medical practitioner? [break] Cooler, cooler nowadays? [break] Then other big, big telescope, how many miles it can see?
Jayatirtha: You can see millions of miles.
Prabhupada: How many million? (laughter)
Jayatirtha: You can see light years away. Many, many, many millions of miles with the big ones.
Prabhupada: They can see four billion?
Jayatirtha: Maybe not four billion.
Prabhupada: Then it is imperfect. The radius, what is called, radius?
Tamala Krsna: Diameter?
Prabhupada: Diameter is four billion miles, universe.
Tripurari: One universe.
Prabhupada: One universe. This is the smallest. Four-headed Brahma. [break] ...all universes taken together, that is one-fourth energy. And three-fourth energy is spiritual world. Ekamsena sthito jagat [Bg. 10.42], one part. [break] ...asat koti-yojana, one yojana equal to eight mile. And one koti means ten million. So fifty into eight, two hundred, into..., ten into ten million..., it comes. I have calculated four billion. How many millions make a billion?
Harikesa: A thousand. [break]
Prabhupada: Sun is situated in the middle from this circumference, two billion up and down. And the moon is situated above the sun, 1,600,00 miles. How they can go to the moon?
Devotee: They think the moon is closer than the sun.
Prabhupada: They may think, but we are thinking in this way. Who is right?
Devotee: We are right, the Vedas.
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] ...thinking is right because they could not go to the moon. They say they went, but actually they could not. Now they are disappointed. [break]
Devotee: ...Prabhupada? He had some question whether Lord Nityananda ever took sannyasa.
Prabhupada: No. [break] ...went with the sannyasis as brahmacari. [break] ...philosophy?
Tamala Krsna: Philosophy book.
Harikesa: Philosophy book is waiting until...
Brahmananda: No, Hayagriva is editing it now.
Harikesa: Oh, now? Jaya.
Satsvarupa: We're going to do some of the chapters in installments in Back to Godhead. We're going to do Darwin as soon as possible, in a month or two. [break]
Prabhupada: ...philosophy is the ultimate, Vedanta. Vedanta philosophy. And Bhagavata is the commentary on the Vedanta philosophy. [break] ...Darwin's theory. Wherefrom he begins?
Jayatirtha: He begins in the ocean. He says that some fish-type animal climbed out of the ocean and began to breathe the air.
Prabhupada: Then wherefrom the ocean came?
Devotee: He doesn't say.
Sri Govinda: In the beginning on the planet there was great turbulence and the oceans were stirring, and then there was some lightning charge.
Prabhupada: Wherefrom the lightning came? And wherefrom the ocean came? Where his philosophy is? It is a speculation.
Sri Govinda: It all began from a primeval explosion.
Prabhupada: Then same question, wherefrom the explosion came?
Satsvarupa: They say that explosion began at time zero.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Satsvarupa: Time zero. (laughter)
Prabhupada: Time zero?
Satsvarupa: Time began then, at time zero. And they say that if you ask the question, "What was before that?" that's not a logical, sensible question.
Prabhupada: Why?
Satsvarupa: They say it's a question that should not even be asked.
Prabhupada: No, then you are rascal. You are beginning from zero. How you can begin from zero?
Devotee: Everything comes from nothing then.
Prabhupada: So that is not philosophy.
Sri Govinda: They say it all originates from a giant mass of primordial matter.
Prabhupada: Then same comes..., that "Wherefrom the matter comes?"
Harikesa: They say it's an accident.
Prabhupada: That is another nonsense, another rascaldom. Where is the accident? Nothing is accident, everything is cause and effect. We say that in the beginning there was God or word of God. In Bible they say?
Devotee: Yes.
Prabhupada: So God was there and God's word was there. That is the beginning, our beginning. Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. Aham evasam agre. And Bhagavad-gita, aham sarvasya prabhavah mattah sarvam pravartate [Bg. 10.8]. This is our philosophy, "Everything begins from God." Now you can say, "Wherefrom God came?" But that is God. God existing, He is not caused by any other cause, He is the original cause. Anadir adih: "He has no beginning, but He is the beginning of everything." This is conception of God. Anadir adir govindah [Bs. 5.1]. That adi is Govinda, person, Krsna. Krsna says, aham adir hi devanam [Bg 10.2]. We find from the history. Brahma is the beginning. He is deva, one of the demigods. Krsna says, aham adir hi devanam. So He is the cause of Brahma also. So this is our philosophy. We don't begin from zero or accident. This is not our philosophy.
Harikesa: Darwin never tried to understand the...
Prabhupada: No, no, he admitted that he speculated. He is not a philosopher, he is a speculator. He has admitted that "It is my speculation. I think like this."
Harikesa: He started his speculation from the creation of life. He didn't...
Prabhupada: Anywhere, speculation is not science nor philosophy. We don't admit. No hypothesis.
Satsvarupa: They call the Vedas speculation. They say the Upanisads are speculation.
Prabhupada: No, no, no, not speculation. Isopanisad, isavasyam idam sarvam [Iso mantra 1], everything beginning from isa, the supreme controller... Where is speculation?
Tamala Krsna: They say that the Vedas are written by man so they are imperfect.
Prabhupada: So you are less than a dog. It is written by man. That's all right. But you are less than a dog. You have no reason, no right. What is your philosophy? What is the value of your philosophy? It is speculation. We don't say, "It is written by man." Apauruseya. They may say whatever they..., we don't say. If somebody says, "Your father name is that," and I know my father's name. "What you are? You are not authority to say what is my father's name. I know very well." So it is their suggestion like that, "Your father's name is this." We don't say that "My father name is..." Is that very good suggestion? You don't know anything of my family. How you say that "Your father name is this?" Is it not another rascaldom? You do not know anything about my family, and you say that "Your father's name is this." What is this logic? You cannot say what is my father's name. You do not know about my family.
Harikesa: Darwin's whole theory rests on the fact, the speculation, that he can show bones. They take these bones and these evidences, archeological...
Prabhupada: Anyway, it is not possible that he has seen all the bones. That is not possible. So taking it that he has studied by seeing the bones, but I can say very easily that it is not possible for a person like you to see all the bones. That is my challenge. How you can say that you have seen all the bones? You say, "Millions and millions of years ago..." You live for fifty years. How you have seen all the bones? That is imperfect. You are a limited person. How it is possible that you have seen all the bones? What is the answer?
Satsvarupa: They say they haven't found all the bones, but what they've found is conclusive evidence.
Prabhupada: But then you cannot do that. If you have seen all the bones, then you can conclude. You say, "Some of the missing." So how it is fact? You did not see it.
Satsvarupa: Just this year they found a skull that was millions of years older than any human skull they found before.
Prabhupada: That's all right. But still, you cannot say that you have seen all the skulls. That is not possible.
Devotee: They will say they have not even found one skull from the Vedic culture.
Prabhupada: Oh. No, Vedic culture do not keep skull, they burn it. Therefore there is no opportunity for you to see the Vedic culture. Then you become defective. Because you cannot see the skulls of Vedic culture. We burn it. So therefore your conclusion is defective.
Harikesa: So the only bones they find are the bones of the fifth, sixth, seventh-class men.
Prabhupada: Yes, of the monkey-class men. (laughter) That's all. Therefore you conclude that the man comes from monkey. That is the conclu... Human being, Vedic culture, they burn it. So they have no opportunity to see the human being skull. The monkeys, they do not burn. So he has seen only the monkey skull, and his conclusion is, "Man is from monkey."
Brahmananda: Actually they are simply interested in bones, but this is the activity of the dog. (laughter)
Prabhupada: Yes. Yes, he finds, (laughter) like that. So it is dog's philosophy. Hare Krsna. [break] ...history in the I.A., intermediate. So a big professor, Dr. Kalidasa Nath, he began to speak, "There was stone age, simply stone there was," in this way. And I immediately..., that "What nonsense you are speaking, stone? There was nothing?" According to the anthropology of Darwin... From the very beginning, when I was a student, I did not believe this Darwin's theory. [break] ...study one after another, chronologically, as Darwin says, skull, it is not possible at all. For any single man it is not possible.
Tamala Krsna: 8,400,000 species.
Prabhupada: Yes. Has he gone down the water? Then what is the...? simply speculation.
Tamala Krsna: Factual scientific study would mean to study all 8,400,000 species?
Prabhupada: Yes, that is scientific study. But that is not possible. Therefore your theory is always imperfect because you cannot say that "I have studied all." You simply guess, "There is some gap, millions of years." So this is not study.
Brahmananda: They say even there's a missing link, a part that they cannot explain. So they admit...
Prabhupada: So that is not science.
Harikesa: It's the most important part too.
Prabhupada: Therefore we say they are rascals. And rascals will believe.
Jayatirtha: Once you said the missing link was your foot in their face. (laughter) [break]
Prabhupada: ...logic also it is admitted that inductive logic is imperfect; deductive logic is perfect. [break] ...logic means srota-pantha, parampara, sruti, Vedic language, sruti. Sruti pramana. Pramana means evidence, and sruti means Veda. Pratyaksa, anumana, sruti. Pratyaksa means direct, direct evidence, and anumana, hypothesis. That is Darwin's theory, something like that. And sruti, Vedic. So out of these three kinds of evidences, sruti-pramana is accepted as supreme, neither anumana nor pratyaksa. Pratyaksa, you are seeing the sky, but you cannot say the length and breadth. You cannot say. You are seeing daily. If you say, "I have got this telescope," so that is an imperfect. and how you can see with your eyes directly, direct sense perception? Hypothesis, anumana, guessing, that is also not perfect. And sruti, we take sruti from the perfect person, Krsna. He says, aham evasam agre: "Before the creation I was there." We take simply.
Laksmi-narayana: Prabhupada, in the Bhagavad-gita Krsna says that in the beginning of creation He sent forth generations of men among the demigods. So the bones that they have found of those...
Prabhupada: Hm?
Laksmi-narayana: I said the bones that they have found so far...
Prabhupada: Who?
Laksmi-narayana: Of the men that were living so many thousands of years ago.
Prabhupada: But they are not demigods.
Laksmi-narayana: No. But who are the bones... Where are those living entities now? Where they have gone?
Prabhupada: You can go to the higher planetary system and try to see there, bones of the demigods. Besides that, according to our sastra, when Brahma dies, then everything is finished. So you have no chance to see. Where is your chance? Because everything will be finished, you will be finished, everything finished, with the death of Brahma, so you cannot study Brahma's bones. Just like taste of potassium cyanide. As soon as you taste, you are finished. (laughter) So you cannot say what is the taste.
Laksmi-narayana: But the bones of those people that they've found, where are their bodies now? Have they gone to some other...?
Prabhupada: No, no, you might have found in your country. But that is not final that you have seen all the bones. [break] Darwin has... He is now dead. Now, even nowadays they are finding new bones. So how he studies perfect? He is now dead and gone.
Brahmananda: Actually they are finding bones now, they claim, that challenge his theory. They are much older than what he ever thought. So they have to change all the calculations.
Laksmi-narayana: Even their method for dating the bones is defective also.
Prabhupada: Hm?
Laksmi-narayana: They have a scientific, not scientific, but they have a process how they date the bones. It's called the carbon 14 dating process, and it's been proved defective. [break]
Jayatirtha: ...so many bones, they should draw the conclusion that the big problem is death.
Prabhupada: (chuckles) That is impossible, sir. You lick up your bones, but you have to die. You have to lay down your bone now. [break]
Devotee: If the Vedic culture was a superior culture, how come man gave up the Vedic culture to take to the materialistic life? one
Prabhupada: No one has given up. You are taking up. No one has given up.
Devotee: But five thousands years ago...
Prabhupada: That's all right. Otherwise how you are getting if it was given up? How you are getting now? It was not given up. Who says it was given up?
Devotee: Well, America was formed on a materialistic society.
Prabhupada: America may say, but if it was given up, then how you are getting now?
Brahmananda: Now Americans are taking it up.
Prabhupada: Yes. How it is given up?
Laksmi-narayana: They will say that it became dormant. Not that many people liked it anymore so...
Prabhupada: Not dormant. It is coming. It is coming. We have not lost it. It may be that a few people know it, but it is not lost. It is not that missing bone; it is not like that.
Devotee: They say like in Chicago they're so prosperous, but they don't worship Krsna.
Prabhupada: Who?
Devotee: Here in Chicago, there's so many big buildings and there's so much money.
Prabhupada: So building, what you will do with building? You have to leave the building and go to hell. What you are doing for that? So long, fifty years, you can lick up the building. Then, after all, you will be thrown into the hell. Then what you are going to do about that? If you cannot stay in the building, then what is the use of constructing building? Suppose you construct one building here and the policeman..., "No, you cannot stay here." Still you construct building?
Devotee: They say they live for sixty years, so enjoy it while they can.
Prabhupada: So that is foolishness. You are making, (imitates piledrivers sound) "Dung! Dung!" very solid, but you are not going to live. The "Dung! Dung!" but that's all. This is called foolishness.
Tamala Krsna: I think there was one great personality -- I forget his name -- he was going to live as long as how many millions of years that he had hairs in his head. What is that story?
Brahmananda: The story of the man who was on the beach...
Prabhupada: Ah, yes. Romaharsana. Romaharsana Muni was standing on beach and was chanting. So Narada Muni was passing: "Then why don't you make a cottage here?" He was: "Oh, how long I shall...?" That, his life, was: when one hair will fall, one Brahma will die. (laughter) And in this way all the hairs, when they will fall -- all the Brahmas will die -- then he will die. And he was thinking, "How...?" Actually that is a fact.
Tamala Krsna: Who was that, Romaharsana Muni?
Prabhupada: Romaharsana. [break] ...basic principle of Vedic civlization. They did not... Vyasadeva, such a learned scholar, he was sitting in a cottage. Lord Siva, such a big powerful, and the whole material energy, Parvati, is his wife -- he is sitting under a tree.
Tamala Krsna: Therefore a sannyasi is always moving around, Srila Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: Yes. Vairagya. That is required. That is civilization. Vairagya and jnana. Jnana-vairagya, knowledge and renunciation, or detachment, this is the goal of human life. Because he is attached to this material world, he has to take birth after birth, birth after birth. So to save this botheration, one has to be detached. This is the basic principle of Vedic civilization, jnana-vairagya. And detachment is possible when one is in full knowledge, jnana. And this bhakti-yoga process is detachment. Vairagya-vidya-nija-bhakti-yogam [Cc. Madhya 6.254]. So it is a civilization of detachment, not attachment.
Tamala Krsna: That detachment is a form of wealth for the renounced order.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is the gain of human life. Arthadam. This is meaning. Artha means meaning. Arthadam. Durlabham manusam janma tad apy adhruvam arthadam. This human life, form of life, is very, very rare. So one can say, "You will also die like cats and dog. How it is rare?" No, yes, adhruvam arthadam: "Although it is temporary, it will not stay, but you can have meaning of life." Adhruvam arthadam. Everything is there.
Tamala Krsna: The materialistic people say that... When they see someone in the detached position, they say, "He is impoverished." They are so confused that they conclude the opposite.
Prabhupada: Impoverished?
Tamala Krsna: Impoverished means they are poor.
Prabhupada: Then what is the poor? What you are rich? You are whole day working day and night, and we are not working, getting our prasadam. I am poverty-stricken, or you are poverty-stricken? You rascal, whole day you are working...
Brahmananda: For a dry biscuit.
Prabhupada: ...like an ass, and we are getting, sitting, chanting Hare Krsna and getting our food. So you are poverty-stricken or I am poverty-stricken?
Tamala Krsna: A poverty-stricken man has to work very hard.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Laksmi-narayana: But they will say, "Well..."
Prabhupada: They will say... First of all you see. You try to understand that this rascal is working day and night twenty-four hours for getting his food, and we are simply chanting Hare Krsna and getting our food. So he is poverty-stricken or I am poverty-stricken?
Brahmananda: That means we're the rich men.
Prabhupada: I am rich man.
Brahmananda: Rich man doesn't have to work, and everything comes.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is rich man. That is the explanation given by Marshall, a great economist. He says that unless one is obliged to work, nobody will work. That is his economic impetus. So the family affection gives impetus to work. He has to maintain the family. That is, he says, that is the beginning of economic development. Marshall theory. [break] ...krsna-sambandhe yukta-vairagyam ucyate. When there is attachment on account of Krsna, that is detachment. Yukta-vairagyam ucyate. He is attached to everything but not for his personal self. We are spending lakhs of rupees for constructing a temple, but we are not interested to construct a house or a skyscraper building. We are not interested. That is detachment. [break] We give up. Prapancikataya buddhya hari-sambandhe-vastunah: "No, no, we don't touch money." Why? If the money can be utilized for constructing a nice temple for Krsna, why we shall say, "We don't touch money"? Yes, give me as much money as you have got. Therefore you will find in India very, very big, big, costly temple, not skyscraper building. That is the sign. If any man had any money, he would spend it for Krsna, not for his personal self. Personally he would be satisfied with a cottage. That is India's civilization. You will find in South India one temple is more than a fort, bigger. It is impossible to construct such temple nowadays. Still you will find in Vrndavana that broken Govindaji's temple. If you construct such temple, even crores and crores of rupees will not be sufficient. That was done by Maharaja Mansingha, but you don't find any palace of Mansingha. He could have construct a palace there. No, he did not do. But for Govindaji, he spent so much money. There is no such thing, attachment, detachment. We must know that everything belongs to Krsna, and we are servants of Krsna. This knowledge is required. That is Krsna consciousness. And when you understand that everything is belonging to Krsna, then the next sense is that why not everything be used for Krsna? [break] ...theory is lost or not?
Tamala Krsna: Who?
Prabhupada: Bone theory, studying the bone.
Harikesa: I think you've broken the bone theory. (laughter) [break]
Prabhupada: (in car:) ...so where is your chance to study these colors?
Jayatirtha: That is a perfect explanation.
Harikesa: I'm going to send this tape and have them add that to the book. You defeated Darwin so quickly this morning it was wonderful.
Prabhupada: Yes, you can send. You have no chance to study. How you can theorize? (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: Why?Jagadisa: Because it would greatly facilitate my preaching.
Prabhupada: You are already preaching.
Jagadisa: But many of the devotees are not so inclined to listen to a householder, as to a sannyasi.
Prabhupada: (laughs) Neither to the sannyasis. [break] ...this building?
Brahmananda: It's the univers... It's a theo... [break]
Prabhupada: Not for the students?
Jagadisa: That's what they originally were for.
Prabhupada: Now? [break] Eucalyptus? No.
Sudama: No, Prabhupada. [break]
Prabhupada: ...one for the bathroom. [break] Eh? Fifth class. [break] ...fourth-class. [break] class. The same?
Sudama: It's the same one.
Tamala Krsna: Srila Prabhupada, When you were... Many years ago you used to have me send you eucalyptus twigs from San Francisco.
Prabhupada: Hm, yes.
Tamala Krsna: So now that you're in America we can easily arrange for that to be done. They can be sent. They take only one day by air.
Prabhupada: So wherefrom?
Tamala Krsna: Well, San Francisco is the best area for eucalyptus.
Prabhupada: So arrange.
Jagadisa: We have them already, Maharaja.
Tamala Krsna: I'll arrange today.
Prabhupada: Arrange that three corner, four corner, square.
Tamala Krsna: Square set, yes.
Prabhupada: Square side. That is good, square and green.
Tamala Krsna: And green. And as thick as the finger?
Prabhupada: No, no, this much. Top of the little finger. [break] ...about forty miles off, there is a place known as Jneyo(?) Kali. There the Ganges is so vast. You have seen it? No. Eh?
Visnujana: Yeah, I think so. I saw it three miles wide. One place where I was sailing on the Ganges it was three miles wide by Mangir.
Prabhupada: Oh, Mungir. No, Mungir is far off. It is near Calcutta. [break] ...snowfall here?
Tamala Krsna: Snowfall?
Prabhupada: Heavy?
Devotee (1): Oh, yes, it becomes very cold here.
Dhira Krsna: [break] ...all ice. In the winter time, this becomes ice.
Prabhupada: Become ice?
Dhira Krsna: Yes.
Prabhupada: Oh? [break] ...walk?
Dhira Krsna: Yes, everyone likes to go out and walk around on it.
Tamala Krsna: Ice skating. [break]
Prabhupada: ...was seeing in that paper, the meeting, a photograph of Jaya Prakash Narayana and Mrs. Gandhi. Both of the meetings were overcrowded. So who is right and who is wrong? People were hearings in throngs both of them. So? Who is wrong, who is right? [break]
Brahmananda: ...newspaper report here was that the crowds who came to cheer Indira Gandhi that they were paid, paid crowds. They would pay them one rupee each.
Prabhupada: Accha? (laughter) Yes. That is for car or...?
Tamala Krsna: Car, yes. [break]
Prabhupada: ...any bird called thunderbird?
Bahulasva: Thunderbird? A big bird, big eagle, in the United States.
Prabhupada: No, big eagle, thunderbird. You have seen in this car?
Brahmananda: Automobile is called.
Prabhupada: But actually is there any bird called thunderbird?
Jagadisa: It's a legendary bird from Indian legend. American Indian.
Prabhupada: Indian legend?
Brahmananda: Of the American Indians, the red Indians. Sometimes their chiefs are called Chief Thunderbird. It's a popular name for their chiefs.
Prabhupada: Oh. Oh. We have got an idea of thunderbird. The bird flies in the, near the cloud in expectation of water, and they are not afraid of thunder. That is called cataka. That example is given by Rupa Gosvami. The cataka does not take water from ground. They will take water when it falls from the cloud. So in the beginning of every cloud there is thunder. So this bird, because they expecting water from the cloud, the cloud is giving him thunder, but still he does not, will not take water from ground.
Dhira Krsna: In what connection do the Gosvamis use that example to illustrate?
Prabhupada: Example means a devotee will take mercy from Krsna, not from the material world. Even there is thunder, Krsna does not give mercy but puts him into difficulty, still, he will not take any mercy from the material world. This is the ex... [break]
Dhira Krsna: You are showing your mercy upon us. How do we prevent ourselves from becoming guru-druha, or ungrateful for the benediction you are giving us?
Prabhupada: So, you want to be guru-druha? Eh?
Dhira Krsna: No.
Prabhupada: That's nice. [break] ...come when there will be lightning, thunder but there will be no rain. (end)

Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Prabhupada: (in car) ...samsare mayara janeiya, moha janeiya, jiva ke karaye gadha. This mayara vaibhava, this material advancement is advancement of maya. Big, big building, nice road, nice motor car, nice... Surely it is material advancement, admitted. But this advancement is advancement of the illusory energy. So what is the wrong there? Suppose... The wrong is there that this material world is temporary. We have come here temporarily, say twenty-five years, fifty years or at most, hundred years. So we are already illusioned and we become more illusioned. Then we forget our real business. Mudha, we remain mudha. Supposing if there is next birth, so who is very much anxious to know what is our next birth? Nobody is. Blindly going on. mayara vaibhava. [break] ...very nice church, but understand what for this church is, what is God, what is God consciousness. Just cultivate this knowledge. "No, big church finished." Live nice building, nice happy life, but don't forget Krsna. Then what is the use of this life? And if you forget Krsna, then the result will be crime, and you will be facing with problems, "Why and now what to do?" So many problems will be there. So the problems cannot be solved simply by possessing big, big buildings.Jagadisa: Shall we get out and walk, Srila Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: Any way.
Jagadisa: Do you want to walk.
Prabhupada: Yes. But how we will walk if it is dripping?
Brahmananda: It's raining. We can ride along the beach... [break]
Prabhupada: ...samsare, moha janmeiva, jiva ke karaye gadha. There are so many churches.
Jayatirtha: This is a special area, Jagadisa? There are so many churches. All over America there are very expensive churches. In India you do not see so many temples. I was surprised when I went there first. Because you do not see very many big, gorgeous, temples. But here everywhere there are big gorgeous churches.
Prabhupada: Oh, no, India, in South India...
Brahmananda: South India is full.
Jayatirtha: Oh, South India. North India not.
Prabhupada: Yes. You have not seen Jagannatha temple?
Jayatirtha: No.
Prabhupada: Beginning from Madras, very big, big temples. In Vrndavana also, that Ranganatha temple?
Jayatirtha: Yes. There are some nice temples in the north.
Prabhupada: In south, many. (sings:) Sri Krsna Caitanya Prabhu... These are all university house or private?
Jagadisa: Some university and some private. After here, these are private homes.
Prabhupada: All very nice house.
Brahmananda: Yes.
Prabhupada: Let them, every house, small temple, perform kirtana. Then this will be all success. Do not cook meat. Nice prasadam. Everything can be utilized for better purpose. Now, in the morning, they are sleeping. Nidraya hriyate naktam vyavayena ca va vayah [SB 2.1.3]. At night either sleeping or sex, and daytime, diva carthehaya rajan kutumba-bharanena va [SB 2.1.3]. Daytime, "Where is money? Where is money?" Oh, seventy miles' speed. "Go there. There is some money." All right, take money. Then what is your next business? Kutumba-bharanena va. Just to purchase for the family, finish money. Again tomorrow. "But where is the business of your spiritual life?" "No time. What can we do? Night we are busy in this way, and day we are busy. Where is the time? Don't bother us." (laughs) Diva carthehaya rajan kutumba-bharanena va [SB 2.1.3]. [break] ...try to make them devotees, they will not become?
Jayatirtha: Not very easily.
Prabhupada:
bhogaisvarya-prasaktanam
tayapahrta-cetasam
vyavasayatmika buddhih
(samadhau) na vidhiyate
 [Bg. 2.44]
Therefore too much attachment for material enjoyment is disqualification for spiritual life. So the western world is trained up for being too much attached to material enjoyment. Therefore lagging behind in spiritual life. Vedic civilization is not to encourage too much for material enjoyment. Minimize. That is Indian civilization. They, if they had money they used to spend for constructing big temple, not for residential house. Maybe the king only had a big palace. Common men, they didn't care for big palace, the palatial building. Common man would be very glad to live in a cottage, and a small garden for growing vegetables, fruits, small lake, that's all. Not wasting time for big, big buildings, big, big... What is called, amenities?
Jayatirtha: Amenities. [break]
Prabhupada: It is good you have done this, but make this Krsna consciousness also one of the paraphernalia. Then it is very nice. But they are not inclined. Hare Krsna. [break]
Jagadisa: ...newspaper there were pictures only.
Brahmananda: So do you have the clippings?
Jagadisa: Yeah, it's posted.
Prabhupada: Every house, however poor he may be...
Tamala Krsna: Go along the north shore, where the Bahai temple is. That's very... [break]
Jayatirtha: About, a big town has got maybe ten television stations. [break] ...means of enjoyment are available.
Prabhupada: Center variety is crime.
Jayatirtha: (laughs) That's becoming very popular.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Brahmananda: In Time magazine they say that by the time the child is fifteen years old he will have seen eleven thousand murders on television.
Jayatirtha: In Detroit one out of every thousand people gets murdered every year.
Prabhupada: Huh?
Jayatirtha: In Detroit -- that's the biggest crime city in America -- one out of every thousand people gets murdered every year. If you live there for fifty years, you have one chance in twenty of being murdered. [break]
Prabhupada: Prosperous. The business is slaughterhouse. All butchers. (laughs)
Brahmananda: The butcher community.
Jagadisa: Srila Prabhupada, we were recently looking at a very big house in Detroit. It's a mansion. It's got much already onyx, marble. They say to build it again today would cost six million dollars. They are just asking for 350,000 dollars. It has...
Prabhupada: Why?
Jagadisa: Why? Because it's such a huge place and it's not in a very exclusive neighborhood. It's surrounded by a six foot high stone wall. It's on four acres of land. And in the room that...
Prabhupada: Six million?
Jagadisa: To rebuild it because of all the onyx, marble. There is $100,000 worth of gold leafing work throughout the house.
Brahmananda: What was it used as?
Jagadisa: It was the Fisher Mansion. Fisher, you know, "Body by Fisher." And the man was a little eccentric. It's a Moorish style.
Prabhupada: Now it is not raining. We can go.
Brahmananda: Yes, we can go. Stop here. [break]
Prabhupada: ...price there are?
Jagadisa: 350,000.
Prabhupada: So it is very cheap.
Brahmananda: Yes. What is the neighborhood?
Jagadisa: It is just south of...
Jayatirtha: It has a big stone fence, though.
Jagadisa: ...the wealthiest neighborhood. It's about six blocks away.
Brahmananda: Is it a crime place?
Jagadisa: No.
Jayatirtha: In Detroit... [break]
Prabhupada: ...also, there is threatening of life. Some brahmana boys who were living with us, so they were threatened, "You are living with these mlecchas. If you don't give up, then your life is in danger." So they have gone to Mayapur.
Tamala Krsna: Who?
Jayatirtha: The Sastris.
Prabhupada: Some brahmana boys, they came and joined.
Tamala Krsna: Oh, yeah, those boys. Oh. And the other brahmanas threatened.
Prabhupada: Yes, they threatened.
Tamala Krsna: You got a report?
Prabhupada: Yes. [break]
Tamala Krsna: ...happy that we're taking to Krsna consciousness.
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] ...brahmanas. are sensing danger because they see that these Europeans are worshiping Deity, temple. Then gradually there will be no caste brahmana. [break]
Tamala Krsna: ...Mahaprabhu also had difficulty with the caste brahmanas?
Prabhupada: Oh, yes. They complained to the magistrate that "What kind of religion He is introducing? It is not our Hindu religion. So chastise Him." [break] ...report of the brahmanas, the police came and broke these drums. It was not the fault of the Mohammedans. The brahmanas lodged complaint against Caitanya Mahaprabhu. So he has to take step. They said, "It is not Hindu religion. They are disturbing God by chanting so loudly. (laughter) Now the God is sleeping and they are disturbing, 'Hare Krsna Hare Krsna.' So stop this." So what can he do? After all, he is public servant. Therefore he took steps. [break]
Ghanasyama (Bhakti-tirtha): I've just come back from England, myself and another boy who was doing library work there. We went there after India, the festival. And so many very important schools all around the world, that are known all around the world are taking your books. Our last day was one of our most amazing days. We went to the Indian office library, the British government. Because they have colonized India, they have so many books on India. This was the largest library like that in Europe. And the librarian, he looked at our books and he says, "Yes, we should have all of these." So right on the spot he ordered standing orders, one copy of every book. That same day -- this was just three days ago, two days ago -- we went to the big...
Prabhupada: That is Aldridge, Aldridge?
Ghanasyama: Yes. This was another one. Aldridge, yes. You have seen that letter? Yes.
Prabhupada: No, I have not seen any letter.
Ghanasyama: But you know Aldridge?
Prabhupada: Yes, I went to see the ambassador.
Ghanasyama: Yes, he is very favorable. The biggest book store in the world. They're so big, they have three blocks. They take up sort of like three blocks. And they have three levels, three floors. So we went to see the manager, the man who owns the whole book store. And he says, "Well, I only deal with rare books." We says, "Well, this is why we've come to see you." And he says, "I want three copies of every book."
Prabhupada: Very good. So they have ordered?
Ghanasyama: Yes.
Prabhupada: Very good.
Ghanasyama: Just in a matter of four, about seven to eight weeks over a hundred professors have taken your books there.
Prabhupada: Oh. Standing order?
Ghanasyama: No, about ten have taken standing orders, but others have taken books to use for their courses or for their own reading and for their own edification. Big schools like Cambridge, Oxford, as soon as they see the books, they really want them.
Prabhupada: This is the rarest book. Not only rare, but rarest. There is no book throughout the whole world, such book. [break]
Ghanasyama: ...professor, he was reading your Bhagavad-gita, it was on his desk when I came into his office.
Prabhupada: Accha.
Ghanasyama: Yeah. He says, "Oh, yes, I know the Bhaktivedanta books. I have just got this book from one of my colleagues." And he says, I showed him the books. He wanted the standing order. He teaches Sanskrit and Indian religions and Indian philosophy. And he said, "Well, there's one book I was just reading. Bhaktivedanta, he mentions the Nectar of Devotion." He says that "You didn't show me that. Do you have that one?" (Prabhupada laughs) So I brought the books back to him that same day. And when I brought them, his students, they were in class and they came out of the class and they started looking at the books themselves. And they really wanted to be showed they could have a chance to read them in their course. They were really happy that he was buying them. They said, "Oh, these are the Krsna consciousness books. We've read some of these before. These are really nice." [break]
Prabhupada: ...Krsna, his all sinful reactions stopped. Krsneti varna-dvayam. Rupa Gosvami says, "What nectar is there in these two alphabets, krs-na!" Krsneti varna-dvayam. [break] ...greater enthusiasm you go on with book distribution. They will be benefited, and distributors also will be benefited. Krsna says, ya idam paramam guhyam mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati [Bg 18.68]. Na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah [Bg. 18.69]. If you want to become quickly recognized by Krsna, then make propaganda, this Krsna consciousness movement. And once recognized by Krsna, then your going back to home, back to Godhead, guaranteed. [break] ...took from London to here come?
Ghanasyama: How many hours?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Ghanasyama: One the plane it took about ten hours.
Prabhupada: Ten hours. From London to Chicago. Not much, ten hours. [break] ...staying at Bhaktivedanta Manor? No.
Ghanasyama: We stayed there most of the time. And the first two weeks we stayed at Bury Place because there are about six schools that are in walking distance from the Bury Place temple.
Prabhupada: So everything is going right?
Ghanasyama: Oh, yes, cultivating very nice. The president there, he is taking out the sankirtana party himself, and the whole temple has become very enthused by this. Bury Place.
Prabhupada: How many devotees are there?
Ghanasyama: Bury Place, there's about... There are three traveling sankirtana parties. There are about maybe thirty devotees there.
Prabhupada: Accha. And Bhaktivedanta Manor?
Ghanasyama: I think about maybe thirty-five. Some of the boys go to Scotland frequently. So they sort of share the devotees with the three temples.
Prabhupada: Edinburgh. So you have been in Edinburgh University?
Ghanasyama: No. I don't know. Prabhupada, they have a program there with the Indians. The Indians are supporting the temple there now.
Prabhupada: Hmm?
Ghanasyama: The Indians, they're paying for the devotees' prasadam and supporting the temple.
Prabhupada: Ah, yes. Anna-dana.
Ghanasyama: They make vows to give a certain amount to help the devotees out every week. They have a big chart. One Indian might make a vow that he will pay for all the wheat or all the breakfast prasada for the devotees for that month, and he'll give that much money. (Prabhupada laughs) It's very nice. They kind of compete with each other to see who's doing the most. They go out and make life members. They make, sometimes, five, six life members in one day.
Prabhupada: So we shall go further? Our time is up.
Tamala Krsna: 6:30 now.
Prabhupada: Oh, then we must go. [break] Hm.
Tamala Krsna: Sometimes we have heard that ekadasi is a inauspicious alignment of the planets and therefore one has to counteract this inauspiciousness by more chanting.
Prabhupada: (laughs) No, no. It is the most auspicious. And chanting is more effective. [break] Yes.
Tamala Krsna: I remember you were instructing once that all of your initiated disciples should chant twenty-five rounds...
Prabhupada: Minimum.
Tamala Krsna: Minimum on this day. Is that a rule that we should all follow in our temples?
Prabhupada: We are sixteen rounds.
Tamala Krsna: No, I mean on ekadasi.
Prabhupada: Oh yes. Ekadasi, simply you should chant. No other business. Nirjala.
Tamala Krsna: No preaching work? Should they go out for preaching?
Prabhupada: No, those who are preaching, not for them. Those who are sitting idle, or they... (laughter) [break] ...has no other regulation, simply preaching. A preacher is so exalted. He hasn't got to follow any regulation. But don't take it. (laughter) And actually if one is busy in preaching work, that is first-class. [break] ...not my manufactured word, my Guru Maharaja, that the... That Madhava Maharaja, when he was a brahmacari, his name was Hayagriva. So he was to go somewhere. So but he was sick. Guru Maharaja was informed that he was sick and "Today is ekadasi. He cannot take his regular meals." So Guru Maharaja said, "No. Let him take immediately meals and go."
Revatinandana: For preaching. [break]
Tamala Krsna: ...Maharaja would sacrifice everything for preaching.
Prabhupada: Oh yes. [break] He was not pleased with Bon Maharaja, He could not do anything. [break]
Tamala Krsna: ...most pleased with you, Srila Prabhupada. We must be sure of that.
Prabhupada: Unless he is pleased, what I am worth? It is due to his pleasure. Otherwise what I am worth? Everyone says, "You have done wonderful." What can I do wonderful? It is by his pleasure it is going on. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah **. [break] Bon Maharaja has written that, last line?
Brahmananda: That your accomplishment has been very great. He had to admit. (Prabhupada laughs)
Tamala Krsna: He admitted it publicly.
Prabhupada: (laughs) No. He has written me a letter. I invited him. [break] Now, he has returned.
Tamala Krsna: Oh, he has returned. (end)
